IVY AUGUSTA SMITH

@SLFS

What is your favorite aspect of your job?

FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF What drew you to start working for Salt Lake Film Society? It all started because I had a lot of friends who work here. That was probably the biggest thing-- I would come and see movies and my friends always seemed like they had a great time at work, which was definitely appealing to me. I’m also a big fan of film and the arts in general, and SLFS’s involvement in the local art community is something that I think is very important.

Why do you think film is such an important medium? There are so many incredible stories that can only be told through film. One that comes to mind for me is my favorite film from 2014, Whiplash. The feeling it gives the audience could not be achieved in any other format. When all of the elements of film come together as well as they do in a film like that – acting, directing, editing, cinematography, production design, – it’s a beautiful and breathtaking experience.

How do you spend your time when you’re not at SLFS? I’m definitely a “creative type.” My job before this was doing graphic design at the University of Utah’s student newspaper and doing that really got me involved in art. In my free time I like to draw, design, write, and play music. In college, I was actually a music minor in classical double bass! I also do portrait photography for some extra money, which is something that I really love. Oh, I also spend a lot of time talking about dogs.

I feel like this is everyone’s answer, but that’s because it’s so true: I really love the family that’s created through working at SLFS. Everyone is so supportive of each other and we all love to spend time together. It’s a really wonderful feeling getting off from a long shift and, instead of going home, going to spend time and watch more movies with your coworkers.

Ivy and her WEST SIDE STORY inspired tattoo

What do you hope for the future of SLFS? I hope to see more programs that get young people in the city involved and interested in film. Much of our consumer base at SLFS is an older demographic, which is great and contributes a lot to the job, but I’d love to see more people in my generation interested in the things we do here at the Film Society. We have so much to offer besides Oscar buzz films, and I’d really love for more people to see that.

What is your favorite movie and why? West Side Story. Always has been, and always will be. I’m a huge fan of theater and musicals, and West Side Story essentially had the best creative team of all time: Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Jerome Robbins. Seriously unreal. And it was translated extraordinarily well to film by Robbins and Robert Wise. It has such beautiful music and choreography and I never, ever get tired of it. In fact, my only tattoo is West Side Story inspired!
