KEVIN HANSON
@SLFS
And you’ve made some films as well, right? My first two films were both in festivals and in graduate school I did two videos that were both in festivals as well. Then I also got to do an internship at Sundance during its second year – the Screenwriters Lab. I think that’s what got me my first tenure track job [in Ohio].
BOARD PRESIDENT
An Interview with Kevin Hanson, President of the Board of Directors for Salt Lake Film Society and Chair of the Film and Media Arts Department at the University of Utah. Interviewed by Barb Guy, Director of Public Relations for SLFS Kevin became Head of the Division of Film Studies in February of 2007. In January of 2010, under his leadership, the division became the Department of Film & Media Arts. Kevin’s teaching career has included teaching Film production at Wright State University, Ohio University, and the University of Utah and teaching history/theory courses for the Masters of Professional Communication program at Westminster College. He began his teaching career as an NEA Artist in the Schools and served as Director of Graduate Studies for the U’s Film Division. He holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from Westminster College and an M.F.A. in Art (filmmaking) from the University of Utah. Kevin brings an eclectic mix of professional film credits to the position including video production work for business and industry, promotional videos for arts, management, and high tech organizations, as well as narrative, documentary, and experimental production credits.
I think the Film Society is profoundly important because most cities the size of Salt Lake do not have an art theater and they certainly don’t have two real art theatres and seven screens. That’s just unheard of in a place this size.
What brought you to us as a board member? I came to the board because Tori [Baker, Executive Director] asked me to. I thought I should be supportive because I don’t think I could feature living in a town that had no foreign films at all and precious few independent films so that’s initially why I showed up at SLFS. I haven’t been disappointed at all because Tori has a great vision for what the place can be and she made a leap of faith early on in the game that I think everybody out there in those other towns needs to make and that is that a place like SLFS is not really the same thing as a commercial cinema. They’re not in the same business. I think what Tori’s done already that’s remarkable is she really has managed to put Salt Lake Film Society on the same footing with other enterprises like it, like the symphony and the ballet and public television and all those things that our culture prizes but has to find unusual ways to pay for. I think she’s done that better than anyone could have expected her to do.
How did you begin being involved in film? I always liked movies, particularly foreign films; I never had a large desire to make one – or even thought about it – until I took Tom Sobchack’s Intro to Film class in college during my long, protracted years as an undergraduate student and I saw Chris Marker’s film La Jetée.
We are lucky in that every now and then one of those films that those of us that favor the independent and foreign film market like becomes popular and SLFS is able to make a little cash, but that’s just luck. There has to be a way to keep the place going so the cinema continues to exist. Tomorrow morning if all the commercial movie theaters in town closed, I would be mildly sad, not heartbroken. If Salt Lake Film Society closed, I would be heartbroken. It’s about the part of cinema that I truly care about.
When I was in graduate school, projecting the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Blue Mouse Theater was one of my major ways to make a living. I think I projected it more than a hundred times.
What are your wishes for SLFS going forward? Well, there’s a lot of things I wish. Since we’re sitting here by the Tower, I could say that I wish that a bunch of us could get together and get the community riled up

about turning the Tower back into the strange looking beast it was years ago and kind of reviving its essence. I think it would be great if we could find a way to make it look more like it used to and make it behave more like the flagship weird part of the organization where the sketchiest stuff happens. I remember my first moments at the Tower were coming with my big brother and the sort of Boheme crowd would hang out there and buy cups of coffee made in a percolator and stand in the lobby and smoke cigarettes and talk about existential philosophy et cetera. Being introduced to virtually all the great foreign filmmakers at the Tower made me pretty fond of it and living in the neighborhood doesn’t hurt either.
Sundance is coming right up. Do you still get excited about it? Because I have such a weird Sundance experience every year which consists of a lot of schmoozing in my role as Chair of the Film Department I don’t really get to do Sundance the way I did when I was a normal person, so I depend on SLFS to show me the films that did well at the Festival. I’ve become lazy in recent years because I’ve realized that most of them will show up at SLFS and the truth is, I can see them for much less money that way.
