November 2013
Explore the Culture @SLFS Are there any differences between projecting at Tower and Broadway?
Yeah, the equipment at Broadway is different, as far as all the traps and the settings and the rollers and everything. There are a few minor details, although the basic technology is the same.
Which do you prefer?
I’ve always had Tower in my heart of hearts, perhaps because I have so many formative memories as a film buff-turnedcinephile at the Tower. I feel like it’s part of everyone’s childhood and teenage memories, coming here and hanging out and looking at all the stacks of obscure DVDs and the scruffy and knowledgeable cinephiles working the counter, and of course my first exposure to art film was at the Tower. So I’m going have to go venue-wise, Tower, even though the Broadway does the lion’s share of independent distribution. Without the Broadway, we wouldn’t see a fourth of the films we’re able to.

or, how the Tower turned a film buff into a cinephile How long have you worked here?
by Annie Jenkins
Almost two years now. Since the beginning of Sundance, 2012.
Did you originally apply to be a projectionist?
I volunteered for a few special events and then I was brought on during Sundance as an extra hand for a few shifts and quickly morphed into full-time. I did a mix of Broadway and Tower shifts and then I was trained as a projectionist. I very much enjoy being one of the last few trained projectionists at the Film Society.
See These while you can!
Favorite thing about working here?
We’re given a long leash and a great deal of leverage on how we handle our day to day responsibilities and interaction with customers. We’re expected to uphold our responsibilities and maintain the image of the Film Society but we’re also given a great deal of creative freedom on how to do it, so it’s not a staid corporate structure. It really is a labor of love in many ways and that’s what I love about it: the mission, the people, the atmosphere. You know, it’s kind of a lifestyle more than really a job.
Favorite movie and why?
I’m going to have to go with, actually a modern film made in the past ten years, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Andrew Dominik worked under the tutelage of Terrence Malick and he took his lessons well with a painterly vision behind the camera, with just these beautiful sun-dappled shots of the old west. But this isn’t a western of the likes of John Wayne or a spaghetti How do you feel about the digital western, it’s very much a dark psychological conversion? I very much drama. A character study in celebrity and It’s bittersweet, you know; I was sad that this enjoy being obsession and kind of the fading dream of the format that’s been doing exhibition of new outlaw west as it continued to become contained films for almost a century was finally becoming one of the last by urbanization. Also the fact that Jesse James, a extinct but on the other hand I’ve been very few trained legend in his own time, is played by Brad Pitt, also impressed with the level of sharpness of the a legend in his own time, whom we have difficulty digital projectors that we’ve been installing projectionists with separating the man from the celebrity. It was here and even an ordinary blu-ray looks at the Film genius casting. And Casey Affleck, it was the astonishing on screen with the vibrancy of role that really defined him as a performer; and Society. colors and brightness; and I do like the extra all the supporting cast: Sam Rockwell, and Mary leverage it’ll give us as far as exhibition of Louise Parker, and even James Carville. It hits obscure films goes. So even though the every single point, script-wise. The cinematography, pacing, passing of 35mm is very sad, and I wonder about the future of even the narration is done in a compelling way. Most people go projectionists, time marches on and as far as marching along with a standard like Rules of the Game or Chinatown or 2001 [A with it, this isn’t a bad beat. Space Odyssey], but, for me, the way this film speaks to me, it has to be my favorite. Have you always loved film? I would say unlike most people who probably knew they were film buffs by the age of eight, it came a little later to me. I would say again, it was some of those formative experiences going to the Tower, seeing a new Jim Jarmusch film or a new David Cronenberg film especially, or a new Woody Allen one, when I was around fifteen, which really got me. They put me on the road to appreciating art film and independent film in a sphere separate from the disposable entertainment at your large megaplex, but once that gateway film came to me it was a rapid descent!
What are your hopes for the future of the SLFS?
My hope is that it first and foremost remains solvent and sustainable; in an increasing era of kind of ‘fast food’ movies by way of Hulu, Redbox or Netflix and other digital distribution outlets, we still have a place. If we can send someone out there with their first exposure to a Bertolucci, Patrice Leconte, or Pedro Almodóvar film, then I would say that’s a heartbeat in the right direction.
