Crisp mornings and scattering leaves are signaling a change of seasons, and at SLFS we are welcoming fall and preparing for all that comes to you from now into the New Year. Fall brings a renewed emphasis on fine filmmaking and the very best films of the year begin to appear and vie for spots on all the awards season lists. We are chock-full of highly acclaimed titles now and that will be the case until the weather warms in the spring and the film schedule lightens enough that we can bring you fun things like Summer Late Nights and our The Greatest series. So for now, keep a close eye on us and don’t miss all the great films we’re showing.

SING WITH MARIA Enjoy THE SOUND OF MUSIC, wear a costume for our contest, and feel free to burst into song! 2 pm & 6:30 pm at Tower

Our focus is now turning to the holiday season and, in January, the Sundance Film Festival. We are proud to once again be Sundance venues at Broadway and Tower. As you know, great titles from Sundance figure into our programming all year long.

January also brings Art House Convergence, a meeting of Art House proprietors from around the nation and even a few international participants. Many but not all Art House Convergence members represent non-profit organizations, so I always look forward to relevant conversations with peers from all over. These important dialogues help us to shape the coming year. For now, I wish you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving. Best,

Both venues open

MARCIE COLLETT

Austen adaptation once in a while, but lately I prefer Whit Stillman’s LADY SUSAN for a darker, Austen interpretation.

Tell us about your life outside of SLFS. What are some of your hobbies?

Per capita, Salt Lake City has so many opportunities to experience art in all its forms. I attend plays whenever I can, especially at Salt Lake Acting Company. I love our museums and galleries, especially UMFA, UMOCA, and Modern West Fine Art which is just a block from the Broadway. I worked at the U for six years, and there’s always something interesting and/or fun going on there, especially at Red Butte Gardens. I tend to get a bit involved with local politics and/LGBTQ issues. I was an English major, so I like to read, but don’t seem to read as much as I used to.

MANAGER OF SPONSORSHIP AND CORPORATE GIVING

How long have you worked for SLFS?

I started the last week of September, so just over one month. It’s gone by so fast, and yet I feel like I’ve been here for much longer — in a good way.

What made you want to apply?

Marcie as Magenta from The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Of course, a love of movies, but also a deep respect for SLFS. The timing felt right, too. There’s an abundance of the bizarre in the world going on, for sure, but it’s also a great time for advocacy and agency - to be the change – and being the Sponsorship Manager for SLFS is being an advocate for film. Salt Lake City is so lucky to have seven SLFS screens which are open 365 days a year and which show the best of independent cinema. SLFS also hosts hundreds of incredible programs for people of any and all demographic and economic types. Very few other cities have this many independent screens showing and doing what we do. I also respect the SLFS staff, many of whom have been here for more than five years, and a few who have been with SLFS since its beginning 15 years ago when they saved the Tower.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Inviting people to movies. Going to movies is my favorite thing to do — so every day I’m inviting people to go do my favorite thing. I’m always checking what’s coming soon, and I love that moment when I think, “Oh, so-and-so is going to love that. She must see that.” When I know I’m going to see someone, I always know which movie I’m going to recommend to them. My actual, ideal job I don’t think exists: Personal Movie Shopper? Cinema Concierge? Individual Film Curator?

How would you say film impacts your life?

When I was younger, film provided escapism. One my earliest film memories is seeing FANTASIA, which still can give me a sense of awe. There are many films from John Waters, Jane Campion, Julie Taymor, Ang Lee, and Gus Van Sant, which kind of helped me through some challenging times. More often now, though, I rely on movies for reality rather than escapism. Documentaries like DOLORES, HUMAN FLOW, and DINA deliver historical, global, and humanity lessons with a poignancy which is unique to our art form. I do still love escaping with a Jane

What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?

I am so fortunate to be a part of this talented and dedicated team of clever cinephiles. My hope is to recruit corporate-like benefits and resources for SLFS while also preserving the local, eclectic culture of our people and buildings. Our staff and volunteers intentionally nurture an independent and creative atmosphere in our theaters, which our patrons and I love. My job is to engage the best Salt Lake businesses and organizations with our extraordinary films and myriad of programs. Then it’s an easy next step to convince them not only of our cultural value, but also of our economic impact. Block by block, all the way into the suburbs, we have inventive, thriving neighbors who, like SLFS, really add to our quality of life, and I am pleased and proud to invite them all to movies. October has been the most fun and inspiring first month on a job — especially with Halloween and Tower of Terror. I’m so looking forward to the holidays, Sundance, and Oscar season — which are all so cinema-centric. It’s the perfect time to be a film advocate and SLFS agent!

What is your favorite movie and why?

I was raised on 70’s musicals, CABARET, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, WEST SIDE STORY and many others. Probably because of this, I love films like VELVET GOLDMINE, WHIPLASH, BIRDMAN, and PATTI CAKE$ which combine music and sound with surprising stories and interesting visuals. I also love Philip Seymour Hoffman’s work – especially his early stuff. I saw him whenever possible when he was on stage in New York - way back in the late 90’s! I usually love the work of Jim Jarmusch, Todd Haynes, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Thomas Anderson, Cohen brothers, and Christopher Nolan. I have seen MEMENTO so many times and love how it manipulates time and memory and madness. If I had to make a Sophie’s Choice, I would choose BARTON FINK as my favorite film. It’s so simultaneously beautiful and bizarre, and both funny and shocking.
