SCARY MOVIE?

Q

“THE BABADOOK (2014) is one of my favorites in recent years. It brings me right back to feeling like a kid afraid to look in closets, underneath beds, or too closely in corners. I love how the mother is trying so hard with her problem child--but is he the problem or the hero?” - Marcie Collet, Manager of Sponsorship and Corporate Giving

“THE GATE (1987) is not only my childhood favorite, it’s a perfect film in every way. It’s charming, scary, and metal as hell. Starring a young Stephen Dorff who gets himself into trouble by opening a portal to hell in his parents’ backyard. NO CGI BS. The practical effects are to die for.....Happy Halloween” - Stephen Simmons, Manager of Operations and Customer Service

“I don’t want to start any fights, but THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999) is probably one of the scariest movies ever made and we need to accept that. It’s the only horror movie that has made me cry out of fear and folks, and I’ve watched many. Found footage wouldn’t even be a common phrase without it, and it still reigns supreme.” - Aaron Kramer, Front of House Staff

“George A. Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD nauseates and terrifies one in ways that makes other zombie movies seem like fodder. With unparalleled dollarby-dollar production and a whirring story, Romero created a cult classic that should not be considered just cult, but canon. A night spent watching this movie is a night worth living!” - Whitman Howard, Front of House Staff

“I’m a lover of all kinds of horror films, I live and breathe Halloween and the like, and a goofy, gore-fest like REANIMATOR (1985) immediately gets me going. The perfect mix of gross-out blood and guts, humor, practical effects, and an amazing score. It’s not the kind of film that will be for everyone, but it’s right up my alley.” - Annie Jenkins, Graphic Design and Marketing Manager

“The single word I would use to describe HEREDITARY (2018) is paralyzing. Don’t go in to it searching for the terror, just slowly notice that tight feeling in your chest that won’t allow your muscles to move. Once the film was over, I sat there in the same position, physically frozen with a deep and primal fear that I couldn’t shake for the next few hours. It was delightful!” - Gentry Loghry, Front of House Staff

“THE DESCENT (2005) was a “sleeper” for me. I didn’t expect much of anything. Very frighting and I don’t scare easily. At a horror film festival in Scotland, I saw the absolutely scariest horror films I’ve ever seen in my life but I can’t remember any of the titles! Try to go to Edinburgh for the annual [Dead By Dawn Festival] if you are a true horror lover.” - Barbara Mellen, Administrative Coordinator

“1977’s HAUSU. Take 7 girls, an evil cat, campy special effects, a poppy soundtrack, and a house that could (and likely will) eat you and cram this all within the pages of a psychedelic pop up book. Then find a spirit to possess said pop up book. Gift this treasure to a loved one and don’t forget to crank up the saturation.” - Amber Gentry, Front of House Staff

“I’d recommend PULSE (2001), directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. This is bar none the most chilling ghost movie of the 21st century. As we develop new technology and progress further and further into the internet, it’s important to remember something like this, where ultimately the most frightening thing about the apocalypse isn’t the ghosts, it’s the loneliness and depression after it’s all over.” - Joshua Stoddard, Front of House Staff

“I saw HÄXAN (1922) for the first time this year and was completely blown away. It’s a silent film that delves into witchcraft and the occult through astoundingly thorough research and breathtaking imagery. I was stunned by the film’s exploration of the link between women persecuted for witchcraft and untreated mental illness. I’d recommend this movie to anybody with a love of practical effects, atmospheric horror, or just a casual interest in the occult.” - Elena Rogers, Front of House Staff

“THE WICKER MAN (1973) uses pretty accurate pagan traditions and a nutty Christopher Lee really effectively to make a horror movie that is eerie and fun, intelligent and campy at the same time! It’s so original, there really aren’t many other films that accomplish a similar type of atmosphere. I love to wonder why portraying pre-Christian beliefs and behavior in a contemporary context is so unsettling. The score also really holds up on it’s own if you’re into that sort of thing!” - Cleo Ricks, Theater and Volunteer Manager

“I love the lonely, gritty, old west vibe of A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (2014). Plus the premise is irresistible - a lady vampire literally sucking the life out of toxic masculinity one ghost town at a time.” - Marissa Beckstrom, Front of House Staff

What’s your favorite

SCARY MOVIE?

(cont.)

“THE INNOCENTS (1961), based on the Henry James novel The Turn of the Screw, is one of my favorite ghost stories. It has all the ingredients of classic gothic horror--a governess isolated at a rural estate with two creepily precocious children and (possibly) two ghosts--but it also avoids the third act problems of many movies about hauntings by declining to explain its supernatural elements. I had goosebumps through the whole film and had its eerie little folk song stuck in my head for days afterwards.” - Averi Crockett, Front of House Staff

“Horror Fangoria-style: DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978), DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) - there’s no guts like Tom Savini guts, makeup artists are still chasing him! Horror Classics: VAMPYR (1932), NOSFERATU (1922), HÄXAN (1922) - setting the tone to creep you out for a lifetime. And we all know Max Schreck really IS a vampire. Horror need-a-therapist-after: THE WICKER MAN (1973), BEGOTTEN (1990), ROSEMARY’S BABY (1968), CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980), SUSPIRIA (1977) Horror Innovation: THE EVIL DEAD - Any in the series! Horror not-your-Universal-monsters: AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981), INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (1994), NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) Subverted Horror: SAFE (1995), TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (1992)” - Tori A. Baker, Executive Director

“Many horror films feature an out-of-their-depth protagonist fighting against a monster or force that represents something we fundamentally fear. But rare is a film where the main characters are both monsters fighting each other. POSSESSION (1981) delves into the intimate yet devastating interpersonal violence that comes from divorce channeled through the earth-shattering performances by Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neil. Director Andrzej Zuławski invokes doppelgängers, super-spies, writhing mutants in this surreal masterpiece about the ways in which people love to hate each other. ” - Tim Morrise, Front of House Staff

“For me, the horror film that warms my black-and-wine colored heart the most is E. Elias Merhige’s SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE. It is a docudramatic retelling of the making of 1922’s NOSFERATU and it was one of the first movies I ever saw at the Broadway theater. SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE hits all those gothy, cinematic sweet spots of mine: Black comedy, historical fiction, character study, Wiemar Germany, Willem Dafoe + John Malkovich, and VAMPIRES. The film-within-a-film gently satirizes many of the tropes of moviemaking--the tyrannical director, the “difficult” star, the peacekeeping producer, the film crew worker bees just trying to hold it together, and poses the ultimate art question: Who is the real vampire, the egomanical director or the honest bloodsucker?” - Guy Wheatley, Head Projectionist
