AVERI CROCKETT FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF How long have you worked for SLFS?
I’m one of the newbies, so I’ve just been working here since the beginning of July.
What made you want to apply?
Averi (center) with her band Pennyland I’m a huge film nerd, and the Tower and Broadway theaters are some of my favorite places in Salt Lake Tell us about your life outside of SLFS. City, so I thought it would be a lot of fun to get involved with Salt Lake What are some of your hobbies? Film Society. I’m really looking forward to working events like Summer I play piano, Celtic harp, banjo, and accordion, and I’m currently the Late Nights, Tower of Terror, the Sundance Film Festival, etc. harpist in a Scottish folk band called Pennyland that plays a lot of local festivals. I also catch and relocate snakes for Wasatch Snake Removal, What is your favorite part of your job? so if you ever have a rattlesnake in your yard give me a call! My favorite part of the job is when I get to chat with customers and coworkers about the films we’re screening. It’s also a great excuse to go What are your hopes for the future of SLFS? to the movies a couple of times a week to stay up to date on all our films. I would love to see SLFS participate in even more international film events like our Czech and Mexican film festivals in the future.
How would you say film impacts your life?
I think film is one of the most powerful tools for building empathy, especially for an introvert like myself who has a hard time getting to know people in the real world. I’m lucky to have a family that introduced me to great films at a young age (I remember my dad showing me Aguirre, The Wrath of God; Knife in the Water; and The Shining when I was probably way too young) and I credit that for a lot of my openness and compassion toward people now.
What is your favorite movie and why?
It’s hard to choose a favorite movie, but at the moment I’d have to say Robert Altman’s 3 Women. I love the eeriness and sense of dread that underlies its mundane setting and plot. It manages to feel like a horror movie without any on-screen violence or supernatural elements beyond coincidences. Add to that Shelley Duvall and those paintings of lizard people and it’s basically a perfect movie.
It’s coming. October 2018. Tower Theatre.
