Hello summer!

ISSUE 10 | JUNE/JULY 2023

Hello, summer!

It’s time to celebrate the season of warm days, holidays and the delightful art of preparing our gardens for al fresco eating and unforgettable barbecues.

There’s something magical about the longer days; the world becomes our playground, offering a plethora of activities to indulge in. From lazy picnics in the park to exhilarating beach escapes, our summer holidays are the perfect opportunity to unwind, recharge and create lasting memories.

But before we embark on our much-anticipated adventures, let us not forget the sanctuaries we have at home – our gardens. Once an empty area with grass and paving, gardens are now an extension of our living space, from blossoming flower beds to cosy outdoor seating arrangements, transformed into inviting spaces where we can savour the beauty of summer.

Check out our interiors pages and get some glorious garden inspo, then fire up the barbecue and enjoy this month’s fresh and delicious summer recipe of spiced chicken skewers with watermelon, feta and mint salad courtesy of At the Kitchen. It’s quick to make, so perfect for a lively soiree or large family gathering.

This month, our travel pages offer exciting journeys by train, providing an escape from the long waits and bustling terminals, so if you’re looking for a different way to explore the world, check out pages 40 & 41.

But that’s not all. Angela has been out and about in ‘shoppers paradise’ Wilmslow and on pages 17-25, brings you a special feature on some of its fantastic businesses.

Oh, and we have some fantastic competitions too – win tickets to see Alexander O’Neal or Nile Rodgers and Chic and experience their magic live. Good luck to all entrants!

Here’s to endless sun and an unforgettable summer!

Protecting your family, home and business

That’s where Benchmark Installations, the newest addition to the group really stands out. It offers solutions that can suit all budgets, from simple alarm systems to highly sophisticated installations using the latest technology.

Already established and trusted throughout the area, Benchmark Security Group has a well-deserved reputation for protecting homes and businesses through Greater Manchester and Cheshire. It has developed an unrivalled array of products and services that ensure clients the best security and protection

available. This includes live CCTV monitoring, 24-hour K9 dog patrols, alarm response, fully trained and industry-certified personnel, rapid-response cars as well as services such as intruder alarms, fire alarms and even key holding.

With burglary and home break-ins on the increase, you need someone to trust to protect you and your family
6 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK
“ We know that the products and service we offer provides peace of mind to families who feel insecure just because they may be in a more upmarket area. We know we make a difference to people’s lives.

Based on Ashley Road in Hale, the Benchmark Installation team has over 50 years’ experience in the business and all the relevant qualifications. Additionally, it is fully up to speed with all of the latest technology as well as the innovations that are really making a difference to home protection and security.

“We’re really proud of the work we do,” explains Tom Carr, who heads up the team. “We know that the products and service we offer provides peace of mind to families who feel insecure just because they may be in a more upmarket area. We know we make a difference to people’s lives.”

Benchmark Installations does just about everything you need: intruder alarms, CCTV access control, intercoms and fire alarms. It also offers monitored intruder alarms directly connected to their high-tech CCTV monitoring station, which is manned 24 hours a day, 52 weeks of the year. It means that intruders are seen earlier and are dealt with immediately, not only by the control room but by the rapid-response teams too. The team also works closely and has a good relationship with the police.

It is perhaps the more modern innovations that catch the eye when you talk to the team and its enthusiasm is infectious.

through to the control centre,” explains Tom. “These beams are all about getting that earlier warning that somebody is in your garden.

“Clever though they are, these smart technologies need to be expertly fitted, you don’t want your alarm going off every time somebody walks past your garden, do you?”

This is just one of the examples of how Benchmark Installations is using modern WiFi technology to defeat burglars. Not only are they highly effective, but the new wireless systems are usually far easier to install and connect.

“The wireless products are easier to install as you don’t have to dig gardens up!” Tom assures us. “In most cases, they probably take a couple of hours to install and then they are up and running, interlinking with our Texecom alarm products. Obviously no two homes are the same and larger properties will take a little longer, but WiFi solutions are still quicker, cheaper and less intrusive.”

Indeed, it seems as though modern wireless technology has contributed to greater advances in home security to the extent that wire versions, which were used in the past, are now only employed in exceptional cases.

With these external beams, you essentially have an invisible tripwire – protecting the perimeter of your property and giving you the earliest warning of an intruder.

“We install a transmitter on one side of a garden and a receiver on the other and when someone goes through it, it will send an alert to an app on your phone or it can trigger your CCTV and go

However, one of the most popular choices is still CCTV, which can be a standalone system that you can look after yourself via an app or this can be linked to Benchmark’s CCTV monitoring centre and once again, Benchmark Installations is at the forefront of this technology.

Of course, it’s all about personal choice, but Benchmark Installations can always come up with a solution, whatever your budget.

It’s all in a day’s work.

Going somewhere?

Of course, you are! It’s summer!

Summer dressing is a breeze when compared to wrapping up for winter. All you need is a pretty dress, a pair of trainers, flat sandals and heels and you’ve nailed it.

Oh, but why stop at one dress when there are so many lovely ones out there at the moment?

The key to choosing your summer wardrobe hangs on its versatility. Ask yourself if you’ll wear it again. All the dresses on this page can be adapted for smart or more casual occasions. We suggest wearing the Monsoon hanky hem strappy number with a pair of platform sandals and a hat for a wedding or summer party and then swapping the heels for flat sandals for the beach on holiday.

Or pair the Jessica Russell Flint tea dress with white trainers for day and a heel or jewelled slider at night. And be bold when it comes to colour – we’re loving the brightest pink and orange hues around at the moment. Finally, if you buy your dress at the start of the summer, you’ll get enough wear out of it to justify the expense.

Upon entering the spa, you are greeted by a tranquil ambiance that instantly puts you at ease. The decor is florally tasteful and complete with comfortable furnishings, all contributing to a calming atmosphere.

Exhale Spa’s therapists are friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring that you feel welcomed throughout your visit. They take the time to understand your individual needs and preferences, providing personalised recommendations and advice for the best treatment tailored to your needs.

I recently enjoyed a classic pedicure and what made this visit particularly interesting was the fact that I was attended to by their apprentice, Chantelle. Initially, I was a bit apprehensive, however, I was assured that she was proficient in all pedicures, and they were right. Chantelle paid great attention to detail, ensuring that every step of the pedicure was executed with precision and care, and I left the salon feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and pampered.

So, whether you are looking for a quick pick-me-up or a full day of pampering, Exhale Spa West is ready for you.

Rediscovering your sense of style is a liberating experience and you’ll soon be sashaying down the high street like your favourite influencer. The key is to develop your very own style DNA. Here are some steps to get your mojo back.

• Start by identifying your personal tastes, what you feel comfortable in (these will be your go-to pieces, such as blue jeans, super-soft knitwear, an oversized blazer) and any style icons you admire. List the kind of clothing that gives you confidence, reflects your personality and is functional for your lifestyle. I favour a pared back, effortless look with minimum fuss, like Sienna Miller wears when she’s papped off guard.

followers to buy less but better, shrink your wardrobe to enable you to see the wood from the trees and be able to pull together a contemporary, flattering and comfortable look with little stress.

• Search for style inspo from fashion mags, websites, social media and people whose looks you envy. Create a mood board or just take screenshots and save images in a folder on your phone. You’ll soon see that a theme emerges and you can begin to envision how you can create these looks yourself.

• What do you want to achieve with your style? To dress professionally, express your creativity or feel more put-together in your everyday life? Style goals will focus and guide your fashion choices. My goal is to inspire you, our shoppers and 32k Instagram

• Identify pieces in your current wardrobe that you love and feel confident in (they’re the keepers) as well as items that no longer serve you (they’ll find a new home). Decluttering and categorising will show you what's missing and make space for pieces that will work with your renewed style. Listen to some banging tunes, light a scented candle and grab a girl friend to help you be ruthless. Open a bottle of wine, but don’t have too much, you don’t want your keepers pile to end up at the charity shop!

• Try new styles. Visit lots of stores (independents really are the best!) or browse different style tribes, shapes and colours online. Try on clothes you wouldn't normally pick up; you’d be surprised how something out of your ordinary can look and make you feel.

• If you're not sure about what suits you, chat to a knowledgeable sales person in a boutique (we have plenty of these at Black White Denim!). They’ll tell you which fits, colours and styles flatter your body type and life style, and make suggestions tailored exactly to your brief.

• Be patient Rebuilding your style confidence doesn’t happen overnight. Incorporate small changes into your outfits and gradually push yourself to experiment more. I reckon it takes a full year to completely refine your sense of style. Working with the seasons throws up a few challenges, so it’s important to tackle each one at a time.

• Build a wardrobe where ‘everything goes with everything else’ (this is our ethos when we choose brands for Black White Denim.) Focus on buying versatile, investment pieces that can be mixed and matched to create lots of different outfits. Spend your money on classic staples like great-quality jeans, neutral-coloured tops, tailored jackets, coats and dresses. With these foundation pieces in your wardrobe, you’ll find it much easier to create different looks.

• Own your style. Confidence is key to getting your fashion mojo back. Wear clothes that make you feel good and reflect your unique personality. Sassy, cheeky, forward thinking or elegant, understated, classic. It doesn’t matter what you are, trust your instinct and don't be afraid to express yourself through fashion. If you look good, you feel good. We all have our own sense of style and what matters most is feeling confident, comfortable and YOU in your clothes.

Wilmslow

‘WAY BETTER’

Wilmslow has always had a reputation for being an upmarket location for business and leisure akin to the kind of districts you find in affluent parts of London.

Now, a £1m investment will ensure it stays that way by upping the ante as the town enters a new phase of development over the next five years with the Wilmslow Town Centre Business Improvement District (Wilmslow BID).

BIDs are districts where income from businesses and public and private funding is used to fund improvements in a town, and Wilmslow already has plans in place to deliver three core objectives.

These are:

● ‘Way Better’ marketing and town centre promotion for Wilmslow

● ‘Way Better’ experience for consumers and visitors to Wilmslow town centre

● ‘Way Better’ business leadership and support.

The BID came into being in 2022 and by 2027, it will generate around £1m of new investment into the town centre. This investment will be managed by a new business-led partnership, which will answer to the wider business community.

Wilmslow is already a focus for leisure, with its independent stores and big highstreet names, and is a fantastic destination for anyone who wants to do a spot of shopping and then head off to a café or restaurant for lunch, a glass of wine or dinner.

It is also a brilliant business hub, which houses everything from cutting-edge global games creators to government offices and online retailers. The office spaces in Wilmslow are home to a range of professional services organisations and companies.

Plus, it’s fantastic location south of Manchester and less than two hours away from London, making it the perfect location for businesses, meetings and so much more.

However, the businesspeople of the town are nothing if not savvy and they have identified ways in which improvements can be made so that they remain ahead of the game.

The Wilmslow BID will therefore focus on a range of improvements, including:

● better marketing

● an increase in business-led events to bring life into the town

● environmental improvements

● providing businesses with a new opportunity to have their voice heard about matters affecting the development of Wilmslow town centre.

Jo Davies, Chair of Wilmslow BID Board and owner of Black White Denim on Water Lane, said:

"Wilmslow's BID status has already started to pay dividends for residents and businesses alike. We have enjoyed a WAY BETTER Christmas with our very own ice rink, a WAY BETTER Easter with our Jurassic Wilmslow Dinosaur and Easter Egg Hunt, and a jam-packed Coronation celebration just last month. I have been in business here since 2010 and have never seen the town so busy and so full of energy, vitality and opportunity."

Lisa McMahon gets up close with Alexander O'Neal

It takes a special kind of artist to race headlong into the 1980s’ chart scene and still be groovin’ in the spotlight nearly 50 years later.

One such artist, still busy defying the odds with irrepressible cool and those rich, instantly recognisable vocals is R&B and soul legend Alexander O’Neal.

What child of the 80s, like me, didn’t dance in front of the mirror and pretend to be a video star when his power-packed Criticize came on the radio, or soundtrack a million unfulfilled crushes with the impossibly sultry If You Were Here Tonight?

What a privilege then to chat with him about his love affair with Manchester, his friendship with George Michael and the bittersweet announcement that his latest tour will be a soulful swan song...

L: Hi, Alexander! Prior to moving back to Minneapolis two years ago, I can’t believe you were living here in Manchester!

A: Yes, do I love myself some Manchester! I lived there for three years. It was just wonderful. I love Mancunians. The city has all the things London has, but it’s right on your doorstep. It’s a great city.

L: Were you missing home?

A: I didn’t know that I missed it until I got back. I’m a southern boy originally, from Mississippi, but I’ve been in Minneapolis for 47 years and I’ve got a lot of family and friends here.

L: I can’t believe this will be your final tour...

A: I’m just honoured to be able to get to this point where I can even use the word ‘retire’, because in this industry, people either have some type of ailment that doesn’t allow them to perform anymore or... they die! I’m glad neither of them fits with me right now, I’m still here! (Laughs loudly) and still enjoying it.

L: Is there one track that you never tire of singing?

A: Sentimental. This song connects a lot with people, loving people. You should tell someone today that you love them, because tomorrow, you might not be here.

L: Will you miss performing live?

A: I describe myself as a working-class artist; not the sort who sits back and waits on royalty cheques and residuals. I work and I entertain, so I’m sure I’ll miss that. It’s not that I’ll never sing again, but I’d like to spend more time with family; I have grandkids now... I’m pushing 70 years old this year! I’ve had a great life and I’d like some years not having to work so much.

L: You’ve met and worked with some big-name stars, is there anyone who stands out as truly special?

A: George Michael. We used to hang out in a club called Browns in London... late-night Browns... so, we used to see each other frequently. George was a very kind man.

L: Is there a famous person you’d still like to meet?

A: Morgan Freeman. He was raised in Mississippi. There are a lot of great guys who started their careers in the middle of the civil rights movement... you know, everything we had to go through in the south... to have this type of success is amazing to me and I’m really proud of it.

L: It’s been so good to talk with you. Are you sure you won’t rethink the ‘farewell’ bit of your tour?

A: I want to thank all my UK fans for the support and love they’ve given me over the years... but it really is time to say goodbye.

National Gardens Scheme

Six stunning private gardens to mooch around, vintage teas and cakes, a classical pianist, plants for sale, an ice cream parlour, bee keeping advice and honey and woodcrafts for sale. Sounds like a lovely day out, doesn’t it?

This is what’s on offer from the Didsbury Village Gardens Group, who are opening up their green spaces in aid of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) on Sunday 11th June, from 12 noon to 5pm. Tickets cost £6 for all six gardens, from 68 Brooklawn Drive, M20 3GZ or new garden 23 Cranmer Drive on the day. Children go free.

We asked Didsbury garden designer Anne Britt to tell us more:

What’s it like opening your garden: It’s great to be able to share our private garden with others. I love visiting gardens myself and having a good nosey around; I get so many ideas to copy at home, both design and planting ideas. Our six Didsbury gardens are all so different and really

beautiful, including a sleek contemporary space, a romantic cottage garden, and a truly atmospheric shade garden. There’s something for everyone to get inspiration from.

Anything new to see?

Yes! All the gardens change every year. But we also have a great new garden opening at 23 Cranmer Road. They’ll be

doing wonderful teas with homemade cake, all accompanied by a classical pianist as well as selling great plants, ice creams, honey and woodcrafts.

You raise a lot of money – who benefits? All the money raised goes to the NGS charities, which include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and Parkinson’s UK.

It’s a great day out, so please make a note of Sunday 11th June (12 til 5pm) and come and enjoy a peek behind the gates of some really beautiful private gardens.

Outsider artistry

Now is the time to make your garden glorious

It’s not just plants that make a garden, it’s also the decorative flourishes that allow it to come to life. Without our furniture and features, a garden doesn’t fulfil its function as the most important part of the home in the summer.

And gardens need to be treated as an extra ‘room’, with all the potential of any space you’d find indoors. In fact, you can have lots of fun with its look. You may not live in a stately home, but what’s to stop you giving it a Lord Snooty vibe by placing statues and luxury water features amongst the flora and foliage?

As you’ll be spending plenty of time in the garden over the next few months, you definitely need some fabulous seating and an absolute essential is a table and chairs, because even if you don’t plan on eating outdoors, you’ll almost certainly have an al fresco coffee there in the morning or sit there with a glass of wine in the evening.

But even if you have a small space, you can still make an impact with quirky planters, a couple of stylish outdoor chairs and possibly a small BBQ, like the smart little number on these pages.

The award-winning Manchester author of Here Again Now talks to Deborah Grace about love, life and second chances.

D: Our last (virtual) meeting was during lockdown. You had just published your debut novel, The Private Joys of Nnenna Maloney, and you were teaching English at high school. How have things changed for you?

O: I’m very lucky! My first book had a wonderful reception and that opened a lot of doors. Now writing is my life in a very real way. I love teaching, but I’m now teaching creative writing at the University of Lancaster. That’s a huge change and it’s wonderful! I’m really grateful to be able to do that.

D: Tell me about your second novel, Here Again Now.

O: It’s the story of three Black British men. Two of them, Ekene and Achike, are gay men in their late thirties and have been friends for a long time. They have feelings for each other that they’ve never formally acted upon. Then we have Chibuike, Achike’s father, who has serious regrets in life, including the way he treated his son when he came out. When something happens to one of the characters, the other two are left to come to terms not only with their grief, but with each other and themselves and to explore a kind of intimacy and love that they weren't expecting, but which allows them to be better versions of themselves.

D: What is the significance of the novel’s title?

O: I wanted a title to express the traditional Igbo belief in reincarnation. I am Igbo by origin; that's my parents’ tribe and their language and belief system. But it works very differently from the karmic reincarnation traditions familiar from Buddhism. It's not about punishment for your past lives; it's just the way the universe works. And it works by keeping families close, so you'll be reincarnated, about seven times I think, within a family. It’s something I was very aware of when I was young and I wanted to write about that, partly as a homage to my culture. Its role in the novel is to be another vehicle for second chances and redemption, but it’s also about delivering

a message about interconnectedness of experience. I wanted to pay tribute to the idea of lives connected across generations and across difference.

D: Issues around identity and belonging are explored through the younger characters’ experiences as Black, gay, British Nigerian men. Tell me about that.

O: Ekene and Achike are two people who don’t feel that they belong anywhere. In Nigeria, there are real threats and dangers on a daily basis that the LGBTQ community lives with and sometimes does not survive. On the other hand, in this country, we have racism and Black British gay men are in such a precarious position. We are part of two cultures and often on the receiving end of ignorance and violence in whatever form. Like Chibuike, both Nigeria and the UK are guilty of a dereliction of care. Black, gay, British men deserve that level of care to feel welcome and safe and valued. And we don't have that. I wanted to write about how lonely that can feel. And for me, the novel’s love story matters because it exists in spite of real difficulties and real prejudice.

Okechukwu Nzelu will be in conversation with Ayesha Ansari Choudhury at Didsbury Arts Festival, 6.30pm, 29th June at The Art of Tea

EASY AS RIDING A BIKE

I’m very proud that my three daughters have inherited my lifelong obsession with bikes and we’re now well and truly a family of cyclists. Even before school age, they all wanted to ride to nursery every day and I hope that’s started the habit of a lifetime.

What this all means, of course, is that I spend a lot of time talking to other parents about teaching kids to ride – and it’s a subject on which I’m particularly delighted to share my experiences, because it’s such an important part of growing up.

OutdOors

Teaching v learning

You don’t really have to ‘teach’ a child to ride – it’s more a case of helping them discover how to ride. The principles are balance first, pedalling comes later, so as long as they can put both feet flat on the ground when starting out, they should be happy just getting used to scuttling along with the bike between their legs to begin with. Let them decide the pace of learning. One of mine insisted on getting up and pedalling at age two and wouldn’t take no for an answer, while her twin sister was largely uninterested until more than a year later. We encouraged the former and didn’t push the latter, she cracked it in her own time.

The right age

There is no right age. It’s no coincidence that the children of cyclists learn soonest, because they’re exposed to daily opportunities to practice and they grow up in homes where bikes are prominent. But by the time they get to primary school, usually peer pressure and curiosity will be the deciders for most kids. Generally, if they have the balance to walk and run, they’ll be able to learn to ride.

Bin the bolt-ons

Stabilisers and those broom handle attachments generally just slow down progress, mess with the sense of balance and create a psychological hurdle. In almost all cases, I’d recommend never using them. Admittedly, it can give you a bit of a backache bending down to hold their shoulders while they learn the natural way, but you’ll be amazed how quickly they don’t need (or want) to be held.

Best bikes

The top brands for kids’ bikes are Islabikes and Frog. Both manufacturers make lightweight, robust, durable bikes that are easiest for children to steer, brake and pedal and they don’t seize up or go rattly after enthusiastic use. Neither are cheap, but they sell like hot cakes on the second-hand market. There’s even a Facebook group for buying and selling them, because they’re often rock solid after several generations of hand-me-downs.

Here’s some advice that’s worked for me:

Going to see the doctor is stressful at the best of times, but when you don’t share the same language, things can get a tad tricky, for both sides. So, going forward, I’ve decided Interpreters are the answer. I mean, I live in Spain, right? Why should any overworked nurse or doctor here have to suffer my weird hand waving, charadelike re-enactments of my various medical ailments, however entertaining they might be?

So, last month, when it was time to head to my local health centre to get booked in for a well woman check-up, I decided to ask the in-house Interpreter volunteers for help.

Arriving, late, as usual, I looked around, spotted the desk I needed and headed over and introduced myself to the oldish couple sitting under the massive Interpreters sign. After checking they were English speaking, I explained that I’d very much like them to read through my Spanish paperwork, as I wanted to make sure, with their help, that everything was in order.

Having handed over my forms, I dived straight in and started to share with them all my medical details. Well, I thought it important they were fully informed. Plus, I talk a lot when I’m nervous. Anyway, they were medical pros, they would need to know my full well-woman medical history in all its embarrassing and intimate detail, you know, to make sure they booked me in to see the right doctor.

The Interpreters dutifully started to scan my paperwork and as I began to overshare, they began nodding their heads. The woman in particular sympathetically and knowingly ummed and ahed in all the right places. Feeling super comfortable in their company, I sat down and began to explain the results of my last UK smear

exam, but before I could continue, the male Interpreter, who I have to say, was beginning to look a little green around the gills, held up his hand abruptly, policeman-like, and stopped me mid-sentence. Bit rude, I thought. But, OK.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t actually know why you’re telling us all this,” he said, squirming in his seat.

“But I thought you’d need to know all this so you could decide which doctor to book me in with,” I replied, somewhat confused.

“Well, dear, we’d like to help, but wouldn’t you be better off chatting to that nice medical receptionist?” joined in the female Interpreter.

“I really don’t think that’s going to help. I don’t have enough Spanish yet to explain it all myself,” I added, despondent.

“Yes, I see the problem, but maybe you could bring someone along with you who speaks really good Spanish,” suggested the male Interpreter, gently. “That’s what we do, don’t we, Eve?”.

“I’m sorry, I’m really confused. That’s why I’m here, so you can translate for me,” I re plied, pointing at the Interpreters sign but starting to get a very bad feeling.

“Oh, no dear, we’re not Interpreters. Ian and I just sat down here because it looked like such a nice, quiet spot. We’re waiting for our friend who’s in having her Covid booster.”

Right, must dash. Oh, dear lord, the things I told them. I need gin. A lot of gin. And maybe some therapy…

The Queen at Chester Hotel

The Queen at Chester Hotel is delightfully situated in the heart of the city. The hotel has a long and rich history dating back to 1860 when it was first established and known then as the Queen Railway Hotel. The hotel was built at a cost of £29,000 using the finest patent pressed bricks and Portsmouth stone and features an ‘Italian style’ parapet, as described in The Chester Visitors Guide in 1860.

Over the years, it has undergone many renovations and upgrades and it now stands as one of the most charming and elegant hotels in the city. The hotel's location is one of its most appealing fea tures, situated on City Road, just a stone's throw away from Chester's main attractions. The historic Roman city walls are just a five-minute walk away, while the famous cathedral is just a little further down the road.

The hotel's exterior is a classic Victorian style with an imposing cream-coloured stone façade that exudes an air of

gran deur. The hotel's interior is similarly impressive, with a high-ceilinged lobby featuring an ornate chandelier, elegant furnishings and a beautifully tiled floor. The decor throughout the hotel is tasteful and stylish, with an emphasis on traditional charm and luxury.

The Queen's Hotel Chester boasts 128 rooms, ranging from standard rooms to luxurious suites. Each room is beautifully furnished and equipped with all the modern amenities guests need to ensure a comfortable stay. The beds are comfortable and plush and the linens are crisp and clean. All rooms feature en-suite bath rooms, which are clean and well-maintained and boast a good supply of hot water.

One of the highlights of the hotel is the restaurant, which serves up a mouthwatering selection of British and inter national dishes. The menu features a range of dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner and there is also an extensive wine list to choose from. The dining room is elegant and refined, complete with com fortable seating and attentive service.

The hotel also has a bar serving a range of drinks and cocktails. The bar is cosy and inviting and the atmosphere nice and

re laxed. It's the perfect place to sit back and unwind after a long day of sightseeing.

The hotel also has several meeting and event spaces, which are ideal for conferences, banquets and other functions. The hotel's staff are friendly and profes sional and always on hand to help with any queries.

The Queen's Hotel Chester is a wonderful hotel that truly captures the essence of the historic city of Chester. Its location, style and amenities are all first-rate and its staff are friendly and welcoming. Whether you're travelling for business or pleasure, the Queen's Hotel Chester is the perfect place to stay. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable stay in this charming city.

The woof guide to Lancaster

Why didn’t the humans ever bring me here before? In fact, they themselves are wondering why they left it so long to visit Lancaster.

For a start, it has a really cool, youthful vibe as it has a huge university campus a few miles out of the centre as well as lots of very lovely historic-looking buildings. It feels a lot like York minus the Minster and the crazy tourism. It is also the paw-fect base for exploring the coast and countryside.

Our first stop on a bright warm day was Williamson Park, which is about a 30mi nute walk from the city centre. I dragged the humans huffing and puffing up a hilly road until we came to an opening into woodland and a stunning country park. There’s a huge building called the Ashton Memorial, which would be impres sive anywhere in the world, but it is here and if you climb up to its viewing point, you can see for miles and miles over

There’s a butterfly house, a play area and a cafe and 53.6 acres for me to run around. I did try to cover a lot of ground as this is one great place for dogs, but after a while, the humans got tired, so we walked back into the city centre and the humans went for a coffee in Priory Hall, run by Lancaster tea and coffee importers Atkinsons, who have a stunning shop next door. There was another young Pom in the cafe with his owners who was trying to attract my at tention and I let him hang around me for about five seconds, then told him I’d had enough. I didn’t want him cramping my style! They love having dogs in here though and I received lots of attention from everyone. It was the same in lots of places. I had lots of cuddles and treats from dog-friendly shop owners and when we got to the hotel, I had even more!

We were staying at the Lancaster House Hotel, which is not in the city but very close to the university campus. Lucky us, we had a beautiful and very relaxing suite. If you love a bath, you would not be disappointed with the one in the bathroom. It was huge. There was a little sitting room with a sofa, TV, fridge, in fact, everything you need, and a large comfy bed. The room was a big hit with us all.

We went for dinner in the bar, although we could have eaten in the lounge area – dogs are forbidden in the restaurant, but that’s OK. It looked very nice though.

Fish and chips and a chickpea curry were followed by something called Lancaster Courting Cake – a sponge filled with cream and topped with strawberries for the humans, while I was happy with treats and people-watching.

Next morning, we left early to have breakfast at the Tollhouse Inn, a vast, airy building with 28 bedrooms, bar, brasserie, courtyard and period features – a haven in the heart of Lancaster. I helped the humans eat a full English breakfast of top-quality bacon, eggs, sausage, hash browns, mushrooms and black pudding. It was the perfect start to another day of gazing at the historic buildings and encountering the friendly faces of lovely Lancaster.

warm and inviting atmosphere that sets the tone for an enjoyable evening.

We were meeting family and staying over in Chester, so there was no holding back, so after a drink at the bar, it was Porn Star Martini’s all round and an Asian platter appetiser for four at the table.

The menu featured a range of delicious dishes inspired by modern British and European cuisine. The starters were varied and included items such as scallops, lob ster cocktail, and crispy duck salad. Our main courses consisted of salads, a selection of grilled meats, seafood, and vegetarian options. The desserts were also a highlight, with many choices such as warm chocolate fondant and raspberry sorbet.

The meat and seafood were cooked to perfection, with a smoky flavour that

added depth to the dishes. The steaks were particularly delicious, with a range of cuts available, and the seafood was fresh and succulent. Our favourite dessert had to be the sticky toffee pudding.

The service was exceptional, with friendly and knowledgeable staff who were happy to recommend a wine from their extensive list, to complement the meal. But the highlight of the restaurant was the grill, which is visible from the dining room.

Overall, Opera Grill Chester is a fantastic restaurant that offers a luxurious dining experience. The menu is varied, and the service and ambiance make for a memorable evening. If you're looking for a special night out, then Opera Grill Chester is most definitely worth a visit.

Spiced chicken skewers with watermelon, feta and mint salad

Food editor, stylist and author Angela Boggiano and her photographer husband, Craig Robertson, owners of At the Kitchen in Cheadle Hulme, share a fresh and delicious summer menu of spiced chicken skewers with watermelon, feta and mint salad.

It is time for some outdoor summer vibes and what better than a simple menu that screams of the taste and freshness of summer. The kind of food where you are not spending hours cooking but will easily feed a hungry gathering. Add extra bought-breads, salads and condiments to create a fabulous vibrant summer spread. And, if the weather fails us, then bring everything indoors, no problem!

For the watermelon salad:

½ small watermelon, peeled & cut into wedges

¼ cucumber, halved lengthways & sliced

100g feta cheese, crumbled into large pieces

100g pomegranate seeds

25g black olives

1 small red onion, finely sliced Handful fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped

Juice 1 lemon

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Spiced chicken skewers with watermelon, feta and mint salad

Serves 4

For the chicken skewers:

1 tsp each cumin seeds & coriander seeds

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2 tsp smoked paprika

2 tsp dried oregano

Grated zest & juice of 1 lemon

4 tbsp natural yoghurt

1 tbsp olive oil

8 chicken thigh fillets, cut into 4cm cubes

1tsp honey

1. Place the cumin and coriander seeds in a frying pan and cook for a minute until toasted and fragrant. Place in a pestle and mortar with the garlic, a good pinch of sea salt and ground black pepper and crush until finely ground to a paste. Stir in the paprika and oregano and mix well. Spoon the paste into a large mixing bowl and add the lemon juice and zest, yoghurt, olive oil and a pinch of salt and mix well.

2. Add the chicken pieces to the mixture and marinade, preferably overnight or for at least two hours. When ready to cook, thread the chicken pieces onto metal skewers. If using wooden bamboo skewers, soak them in water before threading as this prevents them burning under the grill or on the barbeque.

3. Prepare the salad by arranging the watermelon and cucumber on a large platter and sprinkling over the feta, pomegranate seeds, olives, red onion and mint.

4. Whisk the lemon juice, mustard, oil and honey and then pour over the salad and season with ground black pepper to taste.

5. Preheat the grill or barbeque. Lay the skewers on a grill pan rack or barbeque rack and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, turning regularly throughout and brushing with any extra marinade as you go, until golden and cooked through. Serve with flatbreads, extra salad leaves, such as rocket, or watercress if you like and extra thick Greek yoghurt.

Also delicious with tahini, lemon and yoghurt mixed together as an extra dressing. Pickled vegetables and chillies on the side would be perfect.

St Ann’s Hospice’s architects PRP share their exciting plans for new building

St Ann’s Hospice have exciting plans for a new hospice in Heald Green and architects PRP have been with them every step of the way. Here, PRP

Associate Ed Cutler talks about the unique experience of designing a hospice and what a special place it is going to be.

users. Quite a lot of time, if you're developing an office block, for instance, it'll eventually get leased out to new tenants, who will come in and change things round.

“Ever since we first set foot in the hospice and realised it wasn't working for them, we were keen to help St Ann’s get a new building as quickly as possible.”

into two wings, separating the Inpatient Unit (IPU) from the Being You Centre offering day care support. Crossing be neath the trees, with continuous views out over the landscaped gardens, this cor ridor is as much a place to stop for a moments peace as it is to travel between buildings.

St Ann’s Hospice have been working with PRP, an architectural practice with of fices in Manchester (as well as Surrey and London), through out the long codesign process to create a new hospice for the people of Greater Manchester.

Throughout, the overarching focus for PRP has been the well-being of patients, visitors and staff and the vision to transform the end-of-life care experience for future generations of patients that are cared for by St Ann’s.

With that in mind, PRP have created am bitious plans for a 27-bed, fully equipped hospice that is both purposebuilt and environmentally sustainable.

The new £21.5m complex nestles into the natural landscape of a plot adjacent to the current site on St Ann's Road North.

Ed says: “I probably feel closer to this proj ect because, having spent several years getting to know the teams across the organisation, I have seen and felt the wonderful support and care that surrounds patients and visitors in the hospice.

“As architects, you rarely get to work so closely with many of the building’s end

St Ann’s Hospice have two sites – Little Hulton and Heald Green. There has been recent investment in the hospice in Little Hulton, including reimagining the reception, cafe and outdoor areas, so that patients and their loved ones can enjoy time together in a more relaxing, modern environment.

It is the Heald Green hospice that now needs major investment. The old Victorian building, which has served the charity well, is now showing its age and costing many thousands each year in expensive repairs and maintenance. Unlike the more modern hospice in Little Hulton, it has very few pri vate bedrooms for patients and very limited outdoor space.

The new hospice will change all of this and will include individual en-suite rooms and access to private outdoor terraces. The new site is split into three sections by ma ture trees, all of which are subject to Tree Preservation Orders by virtue of their historic significance within the Cheadle Royal Conservation Area.

The proposed development retains all but three of the existing trees, with the building and gardens making best use of the ready-made landscaping while remaining sensitive to the heritage of the surrounding conservation area.

A linking corridor connects the buildings

There will also be a large coffee shop at the entrance to the building, which will serve refreshments for patients, visitors and staff in a non-clinical environment.

The IPU will provide care for up to 27 pa tients, with both individual and shared rooms.

There are 21 single patient rooms and two three-bed bays. Each room has double doors opening out to an outdoor terrace and beyond into the landscaped gardens, which include courtyards and sensory planting.

Ed says: “The project has many different facets. We needed to create a space that meets stringent clinical requirements but looks and feels homely. It almost wants to feel like a five-star hotel.”

PRP have produced an architectural model of the new hospice, with the display showing all of these plans.

Anne-Marie Wynne, Head of Fundraising and Capital Campaign at St Ann’s, says: “I am thrilled with the model, it’s a great re minder of what we are working towards (raising £2 million via our fundraising appeal) and has made us all even more excited to see the result come to life! Our aim is to provide our patients with a homely feel, so they can be as comfortable as possible at our hospice.”

St Ann’s Hospice is now looking for sponsors for the individual bedrooms within the hospice. For more information on the project, sponsorship and donation options, please visit

We are a group of experienced GPs based in South Manchester, we offer the highest level of medical care, above and beyond the NHS. Whilst the NHS is a good system, demand has increased so much that it has become almost impossible for it to offer the prompt and personal care that we all wish for.

Laser prostate surgery: “Do you expect me to talk…?!”

Lasers have increasingly been used in medicine, resulting in major treatment advances. This has been evident in prostate surgery, where the ‘menu’ of op tions for treating enlarged prostates is getting longer. The newer options, which include steam treatment (Rezūm) and prostate stapling (UroLift), have the advantage of being relatively quick and al lowing most men to preserve sexual function, partly because they do not ac tually remove prostate tissue – they either shrink it (Rez ū m) or squeeze it (UroLift).

Around 3.2 million men in the UK are affected every day by urinary issues connected to the condition benign pros tatic hyperplasia (BPH) aka benign enlargement of the prostate. However, despite surgical treatment for BPH being readily available for men whose symptoms are a nuisance, only 400,000 of them re ceive treatment.

Men with larger prostates do not generally benefit from treatments such as Rezūm and UroLift. These are not recommended

by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). If surgery is required to a larger prostate, then removal of part of the tissue is considered the best treatment option.

Transurethral resection of prostate is a standard treatment that removes tissue, but it has limitations on size, time taken to operate and side effects.

HoLEP

However, many consider HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) to be the ‘gold standard’. In this procedure, a telescope is passed through the waterpipe under anaesthetic and a laser is used to remove most of the enlarged prostate, like peeling an orange internally. This surgery allows all prostate sizes to be treated with dramatic results as the surgery is tailored to the patient’s individual prostate. In many cases, patients can be treated as a day case, so you are in and out the same day.

HoLEP surgery requires specialised training, which is why it is not widely

available. It has some of the best outcomes, especially for men with long-term cath eters for urinary retention and those with larger prostates. HoLEP surgery makes over 98% of patients catheter free, which is the highest rate of all prostate surgeries.

Urology Clinics Manchester is the only private HoLEP service in the Greater Man chester and Cheshire area. So, if you are a man with bothersome urinary symptoms or a long-term catheter for re tention, come and see our team.

Being an international man of mystery is optional!

Martin Preston

Founder at Delamere Health Ltd, the UK's only purpose-built addiction treatment clinic, Martin has been helping people grow beyond addiction for over a decade. As someone with lived and professional experience in the field of addiction and mental health, Martin is passionate about stamping out stigma and making recovery accessible.

What are the symptoms of addiction?

Addiction is quite simply the repetition of a behaviour, despite negative consequences. In struggling with alcohol or prescription medication, some people become physically dependent and require clinical detox to stop safely and prevent withdrawal symptoms. With 'process addiction' or behavioural addiction (e.g. gambling, sex, internet), the psychological aspects can be just as devastating. Addiction affects all manner of people and the way in which it does can vary. For anyone who's questioning their relationship with alcohol, substances or behaviour, if it is costing you more than money and you're unable to set limits, it's time to reach out for professional help.

How do I help someone who’s struggling with addiction?

Denial is often symptomatic of addiction and as such, friends, family and colleagues tend to realise that addiction has become an issue long before the person who themselves is struggling does. Rather than pointing the finger, try outlining how their behaviour is affecting or concerning you.

How is addiction treated?

At Delamere, we take a holistic approach which means we look at the whole person and work with them to arrive at a care plan that suits their individual needs. Many guests who stay with us need a detox initially and this is provided by our medical

A true leader and visionary, he believes in embracing a strong ethos of hard work, resilience and effort whilst nurturing every individual child to ful fil their potential.

How do you broaden the children’s horizons?

Development of the whole child is really important to us, something we achieve through our unique academic programme, the WPS Pathway, which results in the best possible outcome for our pupils. We also firmly embrace the view that there are multiple approaches to widen a child’s outlook beyond academic learning. The sports, art, music and extracurricular activities on offer at WPS are a testament to this, providing avenues for excellence in creativity, teamwork and personal growth.

How do you structure the pupils progress?

At WPS, we offer tailored excellence. With small class sizes, we have the flexibility to accommodate teaching according to need, including working in small groups or 1:1 when required. This means that through our robust continuous system for monitoring progress, we can ensure that every pupil is nurtured as an individual and inspired to achieve their very best, both inside and outside the classroom. Thus, pupils leave WPS fully prepared for the next, vital stage of their education.

Once the addictive fog has started to lift, our programmes help guests identify what has been underpinning the addictive behaviour and how to acquire a set a tools to help them stay well, long term. Most guests stay 4-6 weeks and return for weekly aftercare for 12 months. Addiction can be treated and recovery is possible.

Which schools do pupils progress to?

We are really proud of our Prep 6 pupils, who impress us each year with their excellent senior school exam results. These are a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment demonstrated by our pupils, and a firm reminder that hard work pays off! 8 mistakes to avoid when divorcing over 40

With this age-related spike in mind, Lund Bennett – experts in family law, established in 2012 and based in Altrincham and Manchester –are on hand to support you. The firm provides unrivalled knowledge coupled with a compassionate and highly empathetic approach. Here, partner Kirsten Bennett offers insider advice on the most common post-40 divorce pitfalls and how to avoid them...

Waiting until after the holidays

Divorce lawyers often see an increase in clients before, during and after Christmas. Spend the festive season (or even summer holidays) fighting and you may destroy any chances of an amicable split and wind up hashing out your differences in court.

Not getting a financial order

A financial order is a court order that sets out a couple’s finances and legally binds how they will be divided when they get divorced. Divorce finances are dealt with separately to the divorce itself, so not having one means your ex-spouse is free to make a financial claim years later.

In the infamous case of Wyatt v Vince (2015), an ex-spouse successfully made a financial claim 23 years after the divorce.

Remarrying before getting your finances in order

Remarry without a financial order and you may lose your right to apply for one.

This is often referred to as the ‘remarriage trap’. This could leave you unable to make a claim on assets, such as spousal maintenance, property adjustment orders or cash lump sums, that you may have been entitled to from your ex-partner. Making a financial settlement and waiting for assets to be transferred before saying ‘I do’ again is imperative.

Not updating your will

Starting the divorce process does not automatically revoke a will. If you want to prevent your soon-to-be-ex-spouse from receiving the monies and privileges granted to them in your will, you need to update it! You can do this at any time, but if you die before you’re granted a divorce and you have left your spouse nothing, he/she can make a claim against your estate.

Settling too early

Don’t forfeit financial security for wanting to leave the marriage as soon as possible. Getting the settlement right is crucial. Make copies of your important financial documents; It will make you aware of what you own and even what you owe. Make sure that you and the children continue to have health insurance during and after the divorce proceedings. While you are still married to your spouse, an illness or accident can change how property is divided.

Not

being careful with joint accounts

If you’re still using a joint bank account

or credit card, make sure that all expenditure is documented.

Use joint funds extravagantly for your own personal use and you may find that you lose credibility in court and the divorce process is prolonged.

Letting matters drag on

A common and costly mistake. Stay in control by agreeing timeframes; it takes, on average, a minimum 7 months for a divorce or dissolution to be finalised through the courts.

There are lots of ways to keep time to a minimum, everything from agreeing a parenting plan (if you have children) to completing forms carefully – errors cost time and money!

Getting personal in social posts or texts

In divorce cases, solicitors often delve into social media to find evidence. Yes, it’s tempting to vent in the social sphere or express anger via text, but imagine those words being read out by a judge in court before hitting share or send.

If you are the recipient of such posts/ communications, do not respond.

To ensure you avoid common divorce mistakes and that all bases are comprehensively covered (and legally binding), reach out to Lund Bennett.

Coronation celebrations at CHS

Junior Waconians donned red, white and blue to have a royally good time learning all about the Coronation of King Charles III. The celebrations began early as pupils enjoyed a fun and educational morning assembly about the traditions of the monarchy. Year 6 pupil Nathaniel played the part of King Charles and was crowned before walking among his classmates to show off his royal props! The Juniors also crafted bunting to decorate the school and baked cupcakes.

Mrs Kate Sargent, CHS Junior School Assis tant Head, said: “The children enjoyed dressing up in red, white and blue and learning more about the coronation. They listened to Zadoc the Priest, played in Westminster Abbey during the official cer emony, and Year 5 recalled their own visit to Westminster Abbey last term. The whole Junior School sang the national an them together, which they had learned for the Queen’s Jubilee.”

Stockport Grammar audiences voyage to Ancient Greece

Stockport Grammar audiences stepped back in time to Ancient Greece to watch a spectacular production of Dido and Aeneas. The production was created collaboratively between the music, dance and classics departments.

The play is based on Virgil’s poem, the Aeneid, which was written in the first cen tury BC. The poem follows the tragic love story of Dido, Queen of Carthage, and the Trojan Prince Aeneas as they discover

whether their loyalty is to their heart or their duty. Composer Purcell set the fourth book of the epic poem to music in the 17th cen tury and created the opera that is still performed to this day.

Chamber choir and orchestra expertly brought Purcell’s compositions to life and the school’s dancers interpreted the story with expressive choreography. Drama stu dents also created three exclusive scenes, which portrayed the thoughts of

Dido throughout the play.

The school’s Director of Music, Mr Dow, said: “It was a really stunning achievement and all the pupils involved should be immensely proud. I thought the whole thing was in credibly beautiful and it was so lovely to see musicians, dancers, actors and lighting experts all working so well together to produce such a wonderful performance.”

A raft of accolades for The King’s School in Macclesfield

A range of accolades and awards have been given to The King’s School in Macclesfield, reflecting both the school’s academic and sporting achievements. The co-ed in de pendent school in Macclesfield is the first school in the country to be awarded a Gold Award for the quality of pupil learning. The award is the culmination of eight years’ work with The Learning Organisation (TLO) to embed teaching methods that enhance pupils' reasoning, resilience and questioning skills.

Deputy Head, Mr Griffiths, said: "Our ethos is to prepare young people for life beyond their formal education. The aim is to improve the pupils' independent learning, ensuring they think and discover for themselves and therefore, develop skills that will serve them throughout the rest of their lives."

The school’s academic results have seen a significant year-on-year improvement, and this was recognised nationally when King’s was listed in The Sunday Times’ top 10 inde pendent schools in the North West for academic results. The Parent Power Guide 2023 put King’s in 7th position, amongst the very best-performing schools in the region. In 2022, a remarkable 52% of all A-level grades were A*/A.

The school has also achieved its highest ever ranking in a national league table for sport. The School Sport Magazine tables saw King’s feature in the top 25 schools ac ross the UK for achievements across all sporting disciplines. The ranking includes both independent and state schools and is based on performance in national compe titions in all sports. King’s current U13 boys’ cricket team are the reigning

Director of Sport, Chris Thomson, said: “It is fantastic to have this national recognition for the hard work and achievements of our pupils across all age groups and in all sports, we are thrilled to be in the top 25 schools in the country.”

The Manchester Grammar School appoints School Captain for 2023/24

Congratulations to Daniel who has been named as the new school captain for 2023/24 at The Manchester Grammar School (MGS). This is a great opportunity for Daniel, who studies multiple languages at A-level and is hoping to pursue them bey ond the school.

Daniel said: “As I come into my final year at MGS and having been at this outstanding institution and widespread community for over six years, never before have I felt so lucky and privileged to be a part of it as I do now. To represent this school as its captain means being able to give back for all the opportunities that have been offered to me since the first time I walked through the gates at Old Hall Lane. From an endless abundance of clubs, including podcasting and linguistics, to participation in national competitions run by the very top universities – MGS has guided me every step of the way. A few weeks ago, the debating team headed down to London to take part in the ESU (English-Speaking Union) debating final, finishing in the top 12 teams nationally and last month, I won gold in the UK Linguistics Olympiad. It’s been a set of incredible, wonderful and diverse experiences!

“The quality of teachers that the school has can only be summarised as exceptional and the amount of effort and enthusiasm that they put into each lesson continues to amaze me and is the only reason that I’ve been able to get as far as I have academically. Only last lesson, was the whole history class enjoying a thrilling discussion over the US Civil War! Outside the classroom, MGS has never failed to support my sporting am bitions, with the football, swimming, water polo and now rowing coaches offering me every bit of help in achieving my goals as well as setting up competitions and matches to provide chances at representing the school.

“One thing that I could not forget to include in my MGS experience is the languages de partment. Having previously studied Latin, I am now learning Chinese, Russian and Spanish at A-level, thoroughly enjoying both the challenges and rewards that come

from taking on any language. Despite Covid, the language department has managed to organise trips to authentic restaurants and fascinating galleries while also entering us in for a regional debate held a few months ago – in Spanish! As a result of all the experiences I’ve had learning languages, I am now in the position where I would love to go to study Chinese and potentially another language at university.”

Daniel concluded: “For anyone considering MGS as a potential school to come to, all I

can say is there’s only one choice! Of course, you should go to the school that suits you best, but what I have noticed is that MGS manages to suit every kind of student: the pure academics, the sporting athletes, the talented programmers and everything in between. Either way, from my perspective, I couldn’t have been more fortunate to go to the school I go to and I owe MGS all the thanks in the world for that.”

Well done, Daniel!

Withington Girls’ School: celebrating inspirational alumnae

Withington Girls’ School (WGS) this year marked its Founders’ Day commemoration under the theme of Inspiring Futures, with members of its alumnae community honoured during the occasion as ‘inspirational role models’ and ‘exceptional public ambassadors’.

The event, held at Manchester’s iconic Bridgewater Hall, included the school’s alumnae Ad Lucem Awards, named after the school motto Ad Lucem meaning ‘To wards the Light’, whilst guest speaker for the afternoon was WGS Class of 2004 alumna Dr Louise Maynard-Atem.

After presenting this year’s leavers with their chosen books, a Founders’ Day tradition that she remembered well, Dr Louise May nard-Atem, now a WGS governor, spoke with passion of her ‘non-linear’ career which, she said, had been inspired by her time at the school.

Her journey had taken her from WGS to studying chemistry right through to post graduate doctoral research level, then to working in data and artificial intelligence and next, on to her current position as dep uty director of data and insights within central government. With responsibility for the Government’s digital output, the national emergency alert that went out on 23rd April to UK smartphones fell to one of her five teams to execute.

Sarah Burton OBE, a 1993 leaver, now creative director for fashion house Alexander McQueen, was voted by senior school pupils as the Ad Lucem Award recipient for 2023. Headmistress Mrs Haslam told how, following her education at WGS, Sarah studied fashion

and print at Central Saint Martins School of Art in London. She joined Alexander McQueen in 1996 and was appointed head of design for womenswear in 2000. In May 2010, she became creative director of the brand, having worked alongside Lee Alex ander McQueen for more than 14 years.

Since taking the helm, Sarah has produced critically acclaimed collections with a focus on handcraft, establishing herself as a highly accomplished designer with both artisanal and technical expertise. Today, she supervises the creative direction and devel opment of all the brand’s collections: women’s and men’s ready-to-wear and ac cessories.

In April 2011, Sarah was revealed as the de signer of Catherine Middleton’s wedding dress for her marriage to Prince William of Wales. The design house was most recently named for its work on the dresses worn by the Princess of Wales and Princess Char lotte at the Coronation of King Charles III. In June 2012, she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to the British fashion industry.

Dr Louise Maynard-Atem presented Kea Bell with the Young Ad Lucem trophy. Former head girl and current bursary ambassador, Kea is passionate about voluntary and community work and believes strongly in giving back to her com munity. Her voluntary work led to her receiving a Young Citizen of the Year Award from the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. She was also a young representative for the Greater Manchester Combined Youth Au thority.

The final presentation of the afternoon was the Rose Acton Award to Susanna Thornton, honoured for those qualities also displayed by 2010 former pupil Rose throughout her life and that are valued highly in the school community; qualities such as courage, cu riosity, kindness, humour, determination and a desire to improve things for others.

A keen cyclist, when Susanna relocated to the UK from Hong Kong, she decided to make the long journey on her own – by bike, raising enough funds during her trip to build a sports centre for street children in Cambodia. But Susanna has also faced adversity with serious illness, and her You Tube channel, documenting her cycling adventures, inspires others facing difficult times in their lives.

The Ad Lucem Awards is a whole-school endeavour. Members across the school community nominate alumnae and the shortlist is identified by the head girl team, then senior school pupils cast their vote. The trophies are designed by pupils and hand-crafted by the design technology department.

This year’s theme set the tone for an uplifting afternoon of captivating speeches, wonderful music and poignant readings. In her final speech as head girl, Georgia Campbell thanked the inspirational WGS teachers, staff and fellow pupils for their support.

“Whatever our futures have in store for us, whoever we are inspired by and inspire in return, there could be no better starting point than the foundation we have created here together."

How does education look in the fourth industrial revolution?

“On 1 April, after the noon deadline for fools’ tales, The Times re ported that Italy had become the first country to ban ChatGPT, an online AI ‘conversational agent’. Many will have heard about ChatGPT and seen the headlines suggesting AI facilitates cheating, will end coursework and lead to the emergence of sentient robots a la RoboCop, Blade Runner and Erling Haaland.

The growing capability of AI as an educational tool illustrates that we are in the early stages of the fourth industrial revolution. Having a profound implication for educators and learners, schools will need to shift from a model structured on the acquisition of knowledge to one teaching young people how to assess, evaluate and use content available at the click of a button.

Outside the classroom and in lessons, the flipped learning model will likely become the norm; pupils research outside the classroom, identifying content they consider to be accurate, and are then as sessed in class on their understanding and ability to verify it. Coursework will be impossible to assess without some form of viva.

As educators, we must look at what we are trying to develop within subjects and assess. The way young people will study at university or perform in the workplace requires us to begin facili tating explicit links between subjects whilst developing skills beyond what subjects require.

At CHS, the Lower School curriculum has introduced Big Ques tions alongside developing subjects that emphasise skills like interdisciplinary thinking. CHS’s Lower School Waconian Di ploma is the first step we have taken towards adopting a more holistic view of what children are capable of. The school is actively exploring a more sophisticated platform for Upper School and Sixth Form pupils.

We have a choice whether to be fearful of AI’s potential, but we do not have a choice whether to exploit its ability to enhance the edu cational experiences of young people and better prepare them for the world in which they will live, work and study after school…”

Because pets love gadgets too… PetSafe ball launcher

There’s no substitute for a game of fetch between dog and owner. Even at a relatively old age, my Bedlington Terrier’s ears go up whenever he suspects I’ve got a tennis ball in my hand. But some dogs never quit and there’s only so many balls you can throw in a day. Enter the PetSafe automatic launcher – a waterresistant indoor and outdoor toy your dog can operate itself. With nine distance settings and six angle settings, the launcher shoots standard-sized tennis balls between 2.5 to 9 metres and up to a 45-degree angle.

The cat, meanwhile, watches the dog and shakes a dismissive head at such silliness. He considers the game of fetch far beneath a creature of such superior intellect. The Cheerble interactive board game is far more his style. As well as a place to hide and scratch, it includes an electronic ball that he can activate with his nose to make it roll or jump and interesting holes to chase it through.

PitPat dog GPS tracker

One thing both the dog and the cat can agree on: wandering off and exploring is fun. Not so fun for the family when they get lost though – hence the need for one of these nifty little collar-attached GPS trackers. Super small and light (60mm and 30g), it pairs with an app on your device, so you can see where your furry friend is at all times. Best of all, unlike many competitors that charge you a monthly subscription in order for it to work, it’s a pay-once product. £149,

Automatic fish feeder

Let’s not forget the fish. Sitting high up, safe from clumsy dogs and the rather more sinister intentions of cats, all they care about is getting their dinner as regular as clockwork. I originally bought mine an automatic feeder to make sure they get fed on days when we’re away from home, but I’ve rapidly come to trust it to take care of the daily feed. The dry food hopper silently rotates at programmable intervals to deliver a precisely controllable quantity of pellets, crumbs or flakes. It’s simple and satisfying to set up and as long as you keep an eye on the on-screen battery life monitor, it does the business.

EV ‘DOUBLE-0’ 6?

Now that the world has gone mad for performance/luxury SUVs, I’d say the one I’ve been most looking forward to test driving is the Aston Martin DBX, probably due to the James Bond connection to the badge as much as anything.

I was curious, therefore, when the other day, I spotted one on the motorway in that fabulous deep red wine colour, so I accelerated to have a closer look. From the back, I first saw the fashionable ‘jacked-up coupe’ silhouette followed by the dramatic rear-end with the aero ducktail effect, and with the dark red colour, it was hard to see where the aggressive bodywork slashes ended and the Vantage-inspired tail lights began.

But wait a minute. On closer inspection, I noticed that this wasn’t an Aston at all. The shape was similar, and the visual effect was no less impressive, but the badge said: Kia EV6.

Now, anyone that’s ever read a car magazine knows that Kia and

Aston Martin occupy pretty much opposite ends of the market. They have little if anything in common. So, what business does the affordable, practical Korean carmaker have muscling in on the style game with such a memorable effect? I had to find out more.

I asked Kia to tell me more about its all-electric large SUV. Turns out, the Kia EV6 has more in common with a gentleman spy’s supercar than you’d ever imagine. Check out these numbers: the GT version I saw has an insane 577 brake horsepower and can accelerate from 0-62 in 3.5 seconds. No surprise that it’s the most powerful production vehicle Kia has ever made.

Also unsurprising is the fact that, true to its brand promise of being a truly accessible, value-for-money brand, Kia has priced this blistering rocket ship at way less than half the base cost of the Aston DBX. You can get the EV6 GT, with all that performance plus first-class long-distance travel capabilities and ultra-fast charging tech, for less than £60,000.
