hay-band

Affected by hay fever? Apply some pressure. The principles of ancient Chinese acupressure have been used for centuries to help treat the symptoms of allergy, including hay fever.

hay-band works by applying pressure to the acupressure point on either arm, called the LI-11 point. Acupressure is believed to increase the flow of natural energy through the stimulation of various pressure points and in doing so, help unblock energy pathways to the nose and throat and promote wellbeing.

The LI-11 point can be found at the end of the crease at the elbow. Once located, simply slide a hay-band into position so that the button faces inwards over the pressure point, with the bands passing either side of the elbow.

The band is fast-acting and may be worn on either arm or if symptoms are acute, one can be worn on both arms. Drug-free, natural and discreet, hay-band can also be worn as a preventative.

No drowsiness or other unwanted side-effects, and the band is suitable for adults and children over the age of three, but not suitable for use during pregnancy. £13.09 per (washable) band. Available online from hay-band.co.uk. Instagram – @haybanduk / Facebook – @haybanduk

Meet Harriet our wonderful trainee hairdresser

What made you want to be a hairdresser?

Working as a shampooer from the age of 12 in my mum's friend’s salon and going into lockdown and having it taken away from me, changed what I thought I wanted to do. I went into beauty therapy but realised immediately that it was hairdressing that I really wanted to do.

What do you enjoy most as a hairdresser?

I love meeting new clients and providing a service to make them feel pampered and happy.

Why choose Fixx?

I went to lots of salons for trial shifts, but I didn't feel as welcome as I did when I came to Fixx. I have made lifelong friends.

Who inspires you as a hairdresser?

Everyone inspires me in different ways and teaches me different techniques. I love to learn, and they help me to do better each day.

What do you like doing outside of work?

I'm super close to my mum and she’s my biggest supporter. I also love going for date days with friends, and for little dog walks.

Harriet is taking clients on Saturdays at Fixx Salons.

Meet the talent behind Manchester’s most sought-after 昀oral designs.

If you’ve driven down Barlow Moor Road in Didsbury, you won’t have missed the head-turning 昀oral displays created by The Flower Lounge. Behind this multi-award-winning business is Siân Wild, a 昀orist with 20+ years of experience, a 昀air for design, and a passion for creating showstopping arrangements.

Growing up in a horticultural family, Siân honed her skills working on events across the UK and abroad before founding The Flower Lounge in 2009 - a business built on creativity, innovation, and outstanding customer service. Now, with multiple British Florist Association Awards and the title of National Wedding Florist of the Year, she proudly 昀ies the 昀ag for 昀oristry in the North West.

GLOSSY GIVEAWAY

Scan the QR Code and subscribe to The Flower Lounge newsletter to be in with a chance of winning one of Sian’s signature Spring bouquets!

Beyond weddings and events, Siân believes 昀owers are for everyday living - bringing beauty, joy, and indulgence to your home. Here, she shares four simple ways to refresh your space with Spring 昀owers:

People often forget about their front door after Christmas but a 昀oral door wreath bursting with Spring blossoms & foliage instantly lifts the exterior of your home and makes every arrival feel joyful.

First impressions count, so I’d always say go big in your hallway. You need something with wow-factor to distract from entrance clutter and create that perfect ‘I’m home’ feeling.

Use 昀owers in small, unexpected ways. Spring posies in bedrooms, guest rooms, and even bathrooms bring fresh colour, fragrance and give that luxury hotel ambience. Decorative pots of hyacinths are always a popular choice here too.

For the kitchen, create Spring themed vignettes with jugs of seasonal 昀owers. I also love the simplicity of voluminous clusters of hydrangeas on a kitchen island. And, for a more rustic look, tall 昀owering branches like cherry blossom or pussy willow add interesting seasonal texture.

Why we love Mid-Century Modern design Vintage Vibes

If you want to inject personality into your home, then you need look no further than Mid-Century Modern. Mid-Century Modern is a phrase referring to architecture, furniture and graphic design created from the 1930s to mid-1960s, characterised by its clean lines and elegant simplicity.

Furniture is functional but uber stylish, frequently crafted in woods like teak, rosewood and oak and augmented with glass, metal and vinyl, while fabric and wallpaper design complements the aesthetic with distinctive bold patterns and bright colours. It was the author Cara Greenberg who in the 1980s made the term Mid-Century Modern popular with her book Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s, although the phrase precedes its publication. Latterly though it has gained traction as these uber-cool designs are perfect for today’s contemporary open-plan living spaces.

Ercol is the name which springs to mind when we think of Mid-Century Modern furniture, and pieces like the bed and chair (pictured here) bring individualistic flair to any interior but you can make an equally elegant Mid-Century Modern statement with anything from the Vita Sunburst wall clock to the rather fabulous Century Elements wallpaper featured on these pages.

A note of caution. To keep everything looking on-trend you should mix your Mid-Century Modern with other styles, such as the Panton chair from the 1970s, maybe an industrial-style table, a contemporary rug, or a designer sofa and other pieces you can’t live without. This way, you’ll avoid the trap of looking like you’re living in a Mid-Century Modern museum!

Who let the dogs out?

I am not a fan of road trips. Never have been, ever since I was a kid back in the ‘70s. You know the drill: three squabbling siblings crammed into a tiny car for hours, elbows jostling, seat belts an afterthought. The radio? Banned. Dad was driving. Talking? Also banned. Mum needed silence to navigate with an oversized, life-threatening fold-out map that blocked most of the windscreen. Naturally, we always got lost. Taking refuge in lorry lay-bys where the tartan thermos of lukewarm tea would appear, accompanied by stinky egg-and-cress sandwiches and Mum’s rock cakes. Emphasis on the rock.

Lord Muck, on the other hand, loves a road trip. Discovering new places. Meeting new people. So last weekend, we set off for Mojacar in Almeria. A beautiful, whitewashed pueblo, once an old Moorish settlement and now one of the most visited villages in Spain. And all was going well - until his Lordship took a "shortcut” through a vast expanse of olive groves brimming with rustic charm and, as it turned out, rapidly deteriorating roads. The tarmac disappeared. Then the gravel. Soon, we were crawling along what could only be described as a track. No houses. No people. No mobile signal. SatNav gave up entirely. But just like my father all those years ago, Lord Muck exuded complete confidence in his ability to get us to our destination.

Dog One positioned himself at the front bumper. Dog Two flanked us on his left. Dog Three took up the right. Barking. Growling. Teeth bared. Every time we tried to inch forward, they herded us back. And with sheer drops on either side of the track, there was no way to outmanoeuvre them. "Right," said Lord Muck, ever the strategist. "I’ll reverse." Ah. Tiny issue. The large goat herd was now directly behind us. So there we were. Trapped. By a thousand hooves and three hellhounds determined to ensure we remained honorary goats forever.

Then we saw them. A sea of white goats surrounded us on all sides. 500+. Adorable, I thought. How very Spanish. Then, out of nowhere, three hellhounds appeared. Mastíns. Spanish livestock guardian dogs, bred for one purpose: to protect their herd. And in their eyes, we - a suspicious-looking white car –were now clearly part of it.

An hour passed. The dogs finally lay down. Lord Muck saw his moment. He tapped the accelerator. All three dogs sprang to their feet, ready to shove us back into line. Plan B. Lord Muck reached for the door handle, thinking maybe he could shoo them away. The instant the door opened a crack, three sets of snapping, hungry jaws lunged up at him. He swiftly reconsidered. Another hour on and with night closing in, I thought, "This is it. This is where we die. Starving to death because I failed to pack a thermos and egg-and-cress sandwiches." Then, salvation. A whistle. Another. And suddenly, just like that, the hellhounds were gone. A weathered old goatherd, sunhat tilted, staff in hand. He gave us a toothless grin, waved his dogs aside with a flick of his wrist, and, without a word, turned back along the road.

We didn't hesitate. We fled. But as we zoomed around the corner, Lord Muck screeched to a halt. Dead end. Nothing for it but to turn around and re-take our rightful place back in the herd. And pray that the goatherd had packed egg-andcress sandwiches…

The Woof Guide to Bristol

Bristol, the city famed for its maritime history, Aardman (makers of Wallace and Gromit) and the graffiti artist Banksy, not to mention a thrilling music scene, gets a big paws up from me. From the moment I step into our hotel, The Moxy, I am given a very huggy welcome. They make their dog friendliness clear from the outset, with an area around the reception/bar designated for pet pooches and awaiting me in the room a Sir Woofchester’s Welcome Pooch Pack including toys and treats and a ‘Paw Star Martini’ tipple. We have a family suite with a large double bed, pull-out sofa bed, two TVs, one in the bedroom and one in the sitting room, a rack on which to hang coats and a wardrobe for all other human clothes. There’s a posh coffeemaker and tea and coffee stuff

Highlights! Will, the manager, is totally adorable. Well, I adored him. He was buzzy and happy all the time and of course I loved my treats. Breakfast was great because I got sausages! The humans, meanwhile, could choose from a buffet

of traditional English goodies, including bacon and scrambled eggs, different kinds of bread and pastries, fruit, cheese, cereals, fruits, and biscuits; you name it.

Bristol itself is a very cool city. Home of the artist Banksy, so it would be rude not to do the self-walking audio tour of his artworks - many of which are outside, so you can do them with dogs. We all love the waterfront area, which is where to head to for a cultural fix combined with cafe bar culture. There are loads of independent bars and restaurants jostling for our attention, but we opt to sit al fresco overlooking the water at Arnolfini, an art gallery and lovely little bookshop, before taking a look at the Aardman studios and the picturesque multicoloured houses which overlook the harbour.

In the evening, we visit the legendary Granary on an atmospheric cobbled street close to the harbour. The building has quite a history, starting life as a jazz club in 1968 and later as a venue where the likes of Yes, Genesis, Status Quo, Motörhead, Iron Maiden and more played.

It has quite an eclectic vibe; we all loved the murals, clashing prints and attentive as well as trippy Bristol soundtrack. Here, the thing to do is eat dishes cooked ‘over fire’ and wow, they taste good.

The humans loved the crusty sourdough flatbread, followed by delicious mains of lamb kofta served with organic west country yoghurt, pickled shallots and herbs, sirloin steak and a stilton, brussels sprout and confit leek gratin, all cooked over fire and accompanied by a bottle of Flos de Pinoso Blanco, they pronounced, “quite flinty and dry.” There is so much to see here that our two days was clearly not enough. But highlights include the legacy left by Isambard Kingdon Brunel, who created the game-changing Clifton Suspension Bridge in the 1850s.

Clifton is another area you have to explore in Bristol as it’s one of the poshest and prettiest places served by fab bars and restaurants like the gorgeous Coppa lounge bar with its abstract art on dark walls and great wine. A former Pizza Express, it’s a bit Ivy-esque but without all the showiness. Great for a chilled-out drink or food. The humans chose from a menu of classics, calamari and burrata starters, followed by steak and chips and a ricotta pasta, and I had cuddles from aspiring actor Frank, the waiter.

I felt quite serene sitting in the banquette looking out onto the attractive high street, filled with independent businesses, and although Coppa is part of a small chain, it feels individual and classy. Just like me!

The Glossy Guide to

Costa Smeralda

In recent years, Sicily and smaller Italian islands have hit the mainstream. But there is still much to be discovered on Sicily’s sister island of Sardinia, a land rich in tradition and outstanding areas of natural beauty. With direct flights from the UK to Olbia taking just two hours, a trip to Costa Smeralda, in the island’s north, makes for an effortless escape this summer.

It seems unlikely that this rugged stretch of Sardinia’s coastline and the storied town of Costa Smeralda was known only to locals until the early 1960s. Upon discovering the glassy blue waters and brilliant white sand beaches at that time, Prince Karim Aga Khan set about creating an environmentally friendly paradise, and Costa Smeralda was born.

The area has stood the test of time. In the 60 years since its creation, Costa Smeralda has continued to draw in visitors - from the jet-set crowd and Royals of the ‘60s and ‘70s to today’s modern travellers. Upon arrival in Costa Smeralda, it’s clear that you will want nothing during your holiday. The destination is brimming with beautiful hotels, charming restaurants, and high-end boutiques, though the real highlight always remains in focus, the landscape itself.

The careful planning and conscious management of this island idyll - with low-rise village-like resorts, a distinct lack of high-rise buildings and sustainable practices for the past 60 years - is undoubtedly the reason many return year after year to this undeniably beautiful corner of Sardinia.

Explore:

Visit the Renato Pedrinelli Wine Shop for an education in Sardinian and Italian wines and local produce, such as mirto, distilled grappas, olive oil, pecorino and traditional Sardinian Carasau bread.

Some of Costa Smeralda’s postcard-perfect views are best found on two wheels. Jump on a bicycle with MEMA Bike Tours, with regular eco-friendly cycling itineraries for groups or private rides. The Pevero

Health Trail is a walkable 13km path, winding between Pevero and Romazzino.

There are no less than 22 beaches to discover in the area, with many free to access. Spiaggia Liscia Ruja is the largest, with plenty of room to find your own private spot, and the clear water is ideal for snorkelling. Spiaggia del Principe is a peaceful alternative, a pristine beach with a small bar for drinks. Families will love Spiaggia Pevero, with its ultra-shallow and still waters, umbrella-topped loungers, and fine golden sands.

Dining:

Frades La Terrazza offers traditional Sardinian cuisine overlooking the Bay of Cala di Volpe, whilst ConFusion, in the heart of Porto Cervo, serves an inspired fusion of Italian and international flavours. You will find all of your favourite names for a glamorous evening - Zuma, Crazy Pizza, and IT, amongst others. For a more local taste, in the marina, seek out Insula for a showcase of Sardinian cuisine.

Stays:

If you’re seeking a touch of glamour, make Hotel Cala di Volpe your base, a resort that blends seamlessly into the coastline with unbeatable views of the bay. Hotel Cervo, overlooking the Piazzetta, is a sophisticated hotel just steps away from vibrant nightlife, boutiques and restaurants. For a serene stay, opt for Hotel Luci di la Muntagna, one of the first hotels to open in Porto Cervo in 1966. This summer, you can be amongst the first to stay at the new Romazzino, a Belmond Hotel, a stylish stay right on the beachfront.

The Grand Hotel Birmingham

A cornerstone of Birmingham’s history, the Grand Hotel is a five-star Victorian gem that’s hosted the likes of Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, and Tom Cruise, over the years.

After a £50 million restoration, this iconic hotel is back with a fresh look, offering both a nod to its storied past and all the modern luxuries you’d expect from one of the city’s premier properties.

Located in the heart of Birmingham, it’s a perfect base for both business and leisure. Whether you’re here for work, shopping, or a family day out, you’re ideally placed with easy access to major cities like London, Manchester, and Liverpool. Don’t forget to check out the Louis XIV-style Grand Ballroom—it’s a true showstopper for events.

Staying

From the sleek Grand Double Rooms to the lavish two-storey Penthouse Suite, there’s accommodation for every occasion. If you’re looking to splash out, the Penthouse is pure luxury. Think private bar, open-plan living and dining space, table football, a massive walk-in closet, and a stunning marble bathroom with a rolltop bath. For the ultimate experience, you can combine it with an adjacent suite to create a spacious two-bedroom apartment.

For a more budget-friendly option, the Grand Loft Rooms offer plenty of character, with quirky nooks and charming eaves on the hotel’s upper floors.

Eating and Drinking

Madeleine is the place to be for a glamorous cocktail or a glass of Champagne. With its soaring windows, crystal chandeliers, and luxe furnishings, this spot oozes sophistication. It’s the perfect setting for special occasions,

or just a spontaneous drink in the heart of the city. However, there are a few rules—no fancy dress, no hen or stag parties, and no sportswear allowed.

If you’re after a more intimate setting, consider the Horton Bar for a private gathering, or book a table at Isaac’s Bar, a chic city-centre brasserie just a short walk from the hotel. Microsurgical Vasectomy Reversal: A second chance at fatherhood

For many men, a vasectomy is considered a permanent solution for contraception. However, life circumstances can change, and the desire to have children may return. Thankfully, advances in microsurgery have made vasectomy reversal a highly effective option, offering hope to those wishing to restore their fertility.

Understanding vasectomy reversal

Vasectomy reversal, or vasovasostomy, is a delicate surgical procedure that reconnects the vas deferens—the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles—allowing sperm to once again mix with semen. It is a technically demanding operation requiring extreme precision, as these tubes are just fractions of a millimetre in diameter.

While traditional surgical approaches have been used for decades, the advent of microsurgical techniques has revolutionised the field, significantly improving success rates. With the aid of a powerful operating microscope and ultra-fine sutures, the surgeon can achieve meticulous alignment, reducing scarring and maximising the chances of sperm returning to the ejaculate.

Success rates and factors to consider The success of a vasectomy reversal largely depends on several factors, including the time elapsed since the original vasectomy, the surgical method used, and the presence of healthy sperm in the vas deferens. Generally, men who undergo reversal within 10 years of their vasectomy have the highest chance of success, with sperm returning in up to 90% of cases and pregnancy occurring in 50-75% of couples. Even if more time has passed, modern techniques still offer excellent outcomes.

In addition to time elapsed, other considerations include the quality of the original vasectomy and the presence of scar tissue. Some men may have underlying fertility issues unrelated to the vasectomy, which could impact the success of the reversal. A comprehensive evaluation with a specialist can help determine the best course of action.

Why microsurgery matters

Unlike standard surgical approaches,

microsurgery allows for the highest level of precision, which is crucial for achieving optimal outcomes in vasectomy reversal. The sutures used in microsurgical procedures are finer than a human hair, allowing for seamless reconnection and improved healing. This leads to better long-term results and higher pregnancy success rates.

Having trained in microsurgery at Weill Cornell, a global leader in the field, Mr Arie Parnham has had the privilege of refining these techniques alongside some of the world’s top experts. Only a handful of surgeons in the UK have undergone this level of specialised training, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care and outcomes.

The road to recovery

Vasectomy reversal is typically performed as a day-case procedure under general anaesthesia. Most patients can return to normal activities within a week, though strenuous exercise and sexual activity should be avoided for at least four weeks to allow for proper healing.

Post-operative care includes semen analysis to track sperm return and ensure long-term success. Patients are often advised to follow a healthy lifestyle to improve fertility outcomes, including maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption.

Pain and swelling are common after the procedure but usually subside within a few days. Medications may be prescribed to manage discomfort, and patients are encouraged to wear supportive underwear to reduce strain on the surgical site. Follow-up visits with the surgeon will help monitor healing and assess the procedure’s effectiveness.

Making the decision

Choosing to reverse a vasectomy is a deeply personal decision, often influenced by new relationships, changes in family goals, or simply a shift in perspective over time. With today’s advancements in microsurgery, men have a viable, effective option to restore their fertility and embrace fatherhood once more. For those considering the procedure, consulting with an experienced microsurgeon is key to understanding the options and maximising the chances of success.

It is also important for couples to consider the emotional and financial aspects of the procedure. While vasectomy reversal has high success rates, pregnancy is not guaranteed, and in some cases, alternative fertility treatments such as IVF may be needed. Open discussions with a fertility specialist can help manage expectations and explore all available options.

With cutting-edge techniques and skilled hands, microsurgical vasectomy reversal offers a second chance at fatherhood—proving that when it comes to family, life’s path is never set in stone.

Be at the top of your game when

it comes to avoiding padel injuries!

Padel is the latest sporting sensation taking the world by storm, with an estimated 25 million players globally. Many are selfproclaimed padel addicts, hooked on this high-intensity racquet sport. If you’ve not heard of padel before, it’s often described as a cross between squash and tennis.

With the rise in popularity, experts like Dr Leon Creaney, Consultant Sports Physician at The Wilmslow Hospital, are also seeing a rise in padel-related injuries. Here’s his expert advice on how to keep yourself on the court.

Why do people pick up injuries when playing padel?

One of the reasons padel has gained such a following is because it’s relatively simple to pick up as a sport; players will also tell you that it’s highly addictive. This means that many people go from not playing at all to playing multiple times a week. Whilst the health benefits of regular exercise are undeniable, doing too much too quickly can often lead to injury.

There are several other reasons that players might pick up injuries; this is because compared to other racquet sports, padel requires a greater range of movements. Most injuries are often to the shoulder or elbow, usually down to the different types of overhead shots, but the sliding and lunging nature of

padel can also cause calf or lower leg injuries. It’s not uncommon for people to skip their warmups, which can also make you prone to injuries.

What’s the best way to avoid injuries?

The truth is, as with any sport, warming up is the key to avoiding many injuries. The multidimensional nature of padel means flexibility is key, so some simple stretches that mirror the movements you’ll be making on the court are ideal. The more warming up, the better, but if you’ve only got a few minutes before your court opens, it’s still worth using this time to get your stretches in.

Once you’re on the court, it’s worth doing some lighter rallies before jumping into a competitive game. This will get your body used to the movements and

can further reduce your risk of injury. Some injuries are unavoidable, so if you do feel a strain, sprain or any pain, don’t continue with your game. Many of these injuries will improve with rest or simple at-home remedies like icing and elevating. However, there are some more serious injuries that will persist and need specialist attention.

Choosing the right sportswear, such as footwear that provides stability, traction, and the right cushioning, can also minimise your risk of injury. And don’t forget, the cord at the bottom of your padel racquet is a wrist strap, to stop the bat slipping from your hand, whilst it might be tempting to skip this safety measure, it’s highly effective in preventing nasty injuries!

Life in Rhythm: Insights from a Cardiologist's Diary

Mindful Body Postures and Arrhythmia

A

natural rhythm for a healthy heart

The human heart is a remarkable organ, tirelessly beating over 100,000 times a day to sustain life. Yet, for those living with arrhythmias—irregular heart rhythms—this steady cadence can sometimes falter, leading to palpitations and fatigue. While modern medicine offers effective treatments ranging from medications to catheter ablation, emerging evidence suggests that mindful body-postures, a practice rooted in breath control and mindfulness, may offer additional benefits in managing arrhythmias.

Yoga and the autonomic nervous system

One of the key factors influencing heart rhythm is the autonomic nervous system, which regulates the balance between the sympathetic (“fight or flight”) and parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) responses. Increased sympathetic activity can contribute to arrhythmias by triggering excessive electrical activity in the heart, whereas parasympathetic stimulation generally exerts a calming effect.

Yoga, with its focus on slow, controlled breathing and meditation, has been shown to shift this balance in favour of parasympathetic dominance, potentially reducing the burden of arrhythmias.

A growing body of research, including a systematic review published in The Journal of Arrhythmia, suggests that yoga may improve heart rate variability and vagal tone—both of which are beneficial in stabilising heart rhythm.

Body of evidence: can yoga reduce arrhythmia burden?

A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology explored the effects of yoga on patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common arrhythmia. The study found that regular yoga practice was associated

with a reduction in both symptomatic and asymptomatic AF episodes, as well as improved quality of life.

The Melbourne Heart Rhythm Group has launched a randomised study in October 2024 to assess the impact of regular yoga on the autonomic nervous system and its impact on Atrial Fibrillation. Through this study, the team hopes to determine if yoga does actually reduce the incidence and symptoms of AF, and if so, contribute towards identifying the mechanisms behind how and why yoga might be beneficial.

Recommended poses to ease palpitations

For those experiencing palpitations or living with arrhythmias, incorporating specific yoga poses into their routine may help calm the nervous system and support heart rhythm stability. The following poses are particularly beneficial:

1. Corpse Pose

Helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and heart rate.

Lie flat on your back, arms relaxed by your sides, and focus on deep, steady breathing.

2. Easy Pose

Sitting cross-legged with a straight spine encourages diaphragmatic breathing, improving oxygenation and reducing palpitations.

3. Feet-Up-The-Wall Pose

A gentle inversion that promotes circulation and relaxation, easing the effects of stress on heart rhythm.

Lie on your back and extend your legs up against a wall, keeping your arms relaxed at your sides.

4. Child’s Pose

The child’s pose activates your parasympathetic nervous system,

relieves tension in the chest and slows breathing, making it an excellent pose for calming the heart.

Kneel on the floor, lower your torso forward, and stretch your arms out in front of you. Rest your forehead on the mat.

For those with arrhythmias interested in incorporating yoga into their lifestyle, a few key points are worth considering:

1. Start with gentle practices – Slow, restorative forms of yoga are preferable to more intense styles like hot yoga, which may provoke palpitations in some individuals.

2. Focus on breathwork – Breathing exercises can help regulate heart rate and reduce stress.

3. Listen to your body – If dizziness, palpitations, or discomfort occur, it’s important to pause and modify the practice accordingly.

4. Consistency is key – The benefits of yoga are cumulative. Regular practice may be more effective than occasional sessions.

While yoga is not a substitute for medical treatment, it serves as a valuable complementary tool in arrhythmia management. Embrace a holistic approach to heart health—one that combines modern medicine with lifestyle interventions such as diet, exercise and mindful body posture. This offers a further avenue for improving heart health and overall well-being.

Your heart deserves attention

Your heart works tirelessly to keep you going, so give it the attention it deserves. Whether it’s by making lifestyle changes or seeking professional guidance, taking steps to understand and care for your heart rhythm can profoundly impact your quality of life.

Remember, a healthy rhythm is the key to a healthy life. Let’s take it to heart!

Dr Jonny Rajan

Following training in London, Edinburgh and the North-West as well as in Europe, Jonny is an established Consultant at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and also practices at Barts Health NHS Trust in London.

He has an interest in delivering painrelieving therapies for musculoskeletal and nerve-type pains including knee, and back pain, sciatica and a range of other pains. Dr Rajan believes that a lack of awareness of non-surgical treatment for chronic knee pain is limiting the choice patients have in managing their pain and prolonging their suffering.

Knee pain can affect quality of life in so many ways, even in the fit and active. This might be something as simple as going for short walks, mowing the lawn, playing golf or tennis. Knee osteoarthritis is a common culprit.

Many patients suffer from the consequences of severe arthritis. At the Manchester Pain Clinic, Dr Rajan and his team, use cutting-edge treatments to combat knee and hip pain that might not be suitable for knee or hip replacement surgery, or those patients who have pain despite knee replacement surgery.

Don’t Let Pain Hold You Back

Specialist Support at The Manchester Pain Clinic

Dr Jonny Rajan and the team at The Manchester Pain Clinic offer bespoke, holistic and technologically advanced solutions for both short-term and long-term (chronic) pain. With the burden of long-term pain in the population being higher than ever, The Manchester Pain Clinic seek to both manage and offer solutions for a plethora of long-term pain conditions.

Dr Rajan uses techniques such as regenerative medicine, stem cell and nerve ablation procedures for knee pain. These techniques help patients substantially who might not be suitable for a knee replacement, or have pain after a knee replacement. Severe osteoarthritis and other chronic knee pain conditions can be significantly debilitating but there are non-surgical alternatives. Hip pain can also be treated similarly.

“ 1/3 of patients may have chronic pain after a knee Replacement. Furthermore, 1/3 of patients are not suitable for knee replacement surgery.

Technologically advanced

solutions to help

with pain are available for this cohort of patients.”

Dr Rajan works closely with knee surgeons to deliver day-case procedures and optimise medicines, for patients with chronic knee pain.

So, what is a denervation or ablation procedure? Essentially it involves

applying heat to small nerves that supply sensory information from the knees, such that a small break in the nerve is created. This means that pain from the joint itself is substantially reduced. This can also lead to other positive consequences like a reduction in medication, improved walking and sporting ability and better sleep.

The procedures can be done using local anaesthetic as a day case, with x-ray and ultrasound guidance and with short recovery times. Even patients with severe medical problems or patients who have had several previous surgeries can be helped by such techniques. Indeed, they are some of the most suitable candidates. The Manchester Pain Clinic has access to some of the most advanced ablative tools to help maximise the impact of any ablation, including in the state-of-the-art facilities at the Orth Team Centre.

Begin your recovery and contact our pain specialist team today and benefit from an accurate and patient-centred assessment. Please find out more about how we can help you by visiting the website for more information or contacting the clinic using the details below.

Simon Edmondson

The host of The Business Network South Manchester and Chester as well as meetings of Colony Networking. He has networked successfully for over 35 years which led him gaining work from most of the major banks and built relationships which are still flourishing three decades on.

What makes a good networker?

A good networker will arrange 1-2-1s with fellow attendees. The fortune really is in the follow-up. They will tend to stick to only a few groups to ensure they can create relationships, as networking takes time.

Cards or QR Codes?

Sorry, I am old school and love to come away with cards, so I know who I need to contact for a conversation afterwards.

What if I am not comfortable?

This is a common question; the quick answer is to get there early so you are

What is the ACL, and what happens when it is injured?

The anterior cruciate ligament, commonly known as the ACL, is one of the strongest bands of tissue that connects your thigh bone (femur) to your shinbone (tibia). If this tears, or is damaged in some other way, you may hear or feel a "popping / snapping / cracking" sensation in the knee, which may swell quickly, feel unstable and become too painful to weight bear or do any type of exercise.

not walking into a packed room. The longer answer is that you need to find your tribe, which is where you are most comfortable; that does mean visiting a number of groups.

Will I find business straight away?

Highly unlikely, networking takes at least 6 months as you have to gain people’s trust, and remember, you are not always selling to the room; it is introductions you are after.

Free or paid for events?

We run paid for membership events and would always be my preference

but attend free ones though always remember it is difficult to build those relationships as you and the attendees are not fully invested in the event/group.

In person or virtual meetings?

There is a place for both and virtual allows you to network with businesses across the UK and even the globe but they do need a lot of follow up, far more than face to face which are preferable to build up those important collaborations which will lead to referrals.

Mr Neil Jain

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in sports injuries at HCA Healthcare UK’s The Wilmslow Hospital in Cheshire. His expertise covers keyhole surgery for damage to knees and shoulders, including ligament and cartilage injuries, dislocation and rotator cuff repairs. He also administers non-surgical treatments such as injections of platelet-rich plasma.

How do these injuries usually happen?

ACL injuries often occur during highimpact sports activities like football, netball or skiing, where you may have suddenly slowed down, landed awkwardly or changed direction too quickly. When the ACL is damaged, there is usually a complete tear, but a milder injury may overstretch the ligament, but ultimately leave it intact. Interestingly, female athletes are often more susceptible to ACL tears for many reasons including to anatomical differences such as wider hips and different knee alignments, and the involvement of hormones, oestrogen and relaxin, which increase the likelihood of injuries as the joint is more flexible.

What is the best way of fixing an ACL injury? Surgery is often the best way to recover from an ACL injury. Ultimately, we want to get it fixed as quickly as possible so that you can get back to enjoying life as safely as possible. Keyhole surgery can be done, minimising further scar tissue and shortening recovery times. After that, you’ll will need physiotherapy to rebuild strength. Occasionally some patients may recover sufficiently with physiotherapy alone and no surgery, but your consultant will be able to advise. We’ll always tailor treatments to your unique health needs, getting you moving well and back to peak performance.

Gulf House

Liverpool’s success leads Gulf House to Manchester Liverpool’s brand-new Middle Eastern restaurant, Gulf House Restaurant, has taken the city by storm, celebrating a phenomenal start. A staggering 1,500 visitors flocked to the venue during its opening weekend, and many have continued to return ever since.

Step Into Dubai 1970s souk

Gulf House Restaurant offers guests an immersive journey back in time, reminiscent of a traditional Gulf souk in Dubai during the 1970s. From the moment guests step inside, they are transported to the Middle East, surrounded by rich cultural decor that includes terracotta mud-effect walls, traditional Arabic script, woven rugs, and immerses diners into an authentic experience that feels a world away from dining in the Northwest of England. Although there are tables and chairs for those who prefer them, in some areas, guests can take off their shoes before sitting on the floor surrounded by Arab Gulf Khaleeji-style cushions. Soft carpets create a comfortable and cosy space where they can enjoy a traditional spiced-filled sharing feast while listening to the soulful sounds of Arabian music. The restaurant creates an unparalleled sense of escapism. Many visitors, particularly English and Asian customers, have described feeling as though they have left the UK altogether, transported to a bustling souk decades ago in the heart of Dubai.

A Dining Experience with Purpose

At Gulf House Restaurant, every meal carries a deeper significance. The company has made a long-term commitment to donate 5% of its net profit to support the children of Gaza. This initiative is not temporary; it is a core part of the Gulf House ethos. As a result, every guest dining at Gulf House is contributing to a meaningful cause.

A New Era for Manchester

With plans to open three locations in Manchester by 2025/ 2026, Gulf House Restaurant is excited to share its authentic cuisine, soulful atmosphere, and cultural charm with new audiences. For now, guests from Manchester, Bradford, and beyond continue to travel to Liverpool, eager to experience the magic that Gulf House offers. With plans to open Gulf House in Manchester very soon.

Ward Hadaway divorce lawyers, Liz Bottrill and Christine Barker, are fed up with their profession being stereotyped! Here, they chat about some of the alternatives to long court proceedings and escalating costs during a marital breakup.

L: You often hear criticism that divorce lawyers "make the situation worse". It's frustrating, isn't it?

C: Yes – there seems to be an assumption that consulting a lawyer inevitably means you end up in court, spending a fortune on legal fees.

L: When the reality is that very few of our cases end up in court nowadays. Unlike a few years ago when court was the only option for people who couldn’t agree on things, there are so many more options to discuss with clients who don't know where to start.

C: Yes - there are a number of alternatives to court that are legally recognised as a way to resolve things. And our experience means we can explain each of those options to our clients and help them make the best choice for them.

L: I suppose most people may have heard of mediation, but in my experience, that is largely based on trust. And trust is something often missing at the beginning of a divorce process, meaning

negotiating a financial settlement in mediation comes with risks.

C: I agree – although it can work well to agree arrangements for children in the early days of separation. A process which works extremely well for resolving financial arrangements is early neutral evaluation. I have used that with great success in complicated financial cases. It can bring about swift resolution – but with the scrutiny more usually found in a court process – meaning a couple can be sure the financial outcome is the right one.

L: So not dissimilar to Arbitration?

C: That’s right – Arbitration also has all the checks and balances of a court process but with the added advantage that you can use it to just to decide one issue.

L: So good for a couple who can agree on everything except maybe the right level of maintenance – whereas once you are in a court process, everything is "up for grabs"?

C: Yes – and of course, we have private financial dispute resolution appointments where you can opt out of the court system to try and agree on things, then opt back in if it fails. A bit like using private health and the NHS in conjunction with each other.

L: So, some routes are better than others depending on a particular client’s circumstances. And we can help them choose the best path for them.

C: And whichever route the client chooses, we can make sure they have the right legal orders in place at the end to make sure their agreement is legally binding on everyone. You and I have both had experience with clients trying to do things themselves, not realising they need those legal orders, and then years later, an ex-spouse coming back for more.

L: So, people shouldn’t fear coming to see a lawyer – we can actually show them so many more ways forward than just court.

C: Exactly.

Altrincham debut author: Juliette Tomlinson

Holidaying in France two years ago, voracious reader Juliette Tomlinson knew she could probably pen something ‘equally rubbishy, if not better’ than the book she had brought along with her. Consequently, in September 2024, this Newcastle University English graduate and mother-of-two, alongside a career in upmarket publishing, educational book sales and fiction translation, published her debut novel- ‘Longford, A Manchester Love Story’.

When two months later she was made redundant, Juliette focused her energies on promoting her book and writing ‘Sunnyside’, the second in her Manchester trilogy.

Altrincham-born Juliette lives in Stretford opposite Longford Park, the former home of Manchester’s Victorian philanthropist John Rylands and his Cuban third wife Enriqueta. John’s enterprises and acts of local, national and international generosity are thoroughly documented here and abroad. And since 1890, Enriqueta’s imposing Gothic-style John Rylands Library has stood proud in the city centre, in a fitting tribute to her late husband’s boundless charitable deeds.

However, about the private lives of the great man and his young wife, very little was known. Juliette felt compelled to rectify the matter. Her critically acclaimed novel ‘Longford’ honours ‘the greatest merchant prince the world had ever seen, whose life was given meaning and worth by the extraordinary woman who loved him.’ A mélange of historical facts and romantic fiction, ’Longford` will be followed in September by ‘Sunnyside’.

Juliette says, ‘I felt the Rylands’ relationship was an untold story. Yes, we had facts and figures about John, his business interests and accomplishments. However, there was nothing about Enriqueta nor about them as a couple and their life together. She had been John’s late second wife’s carer.

They wed in 1875. He was 74 and she was 32 years old. Despite the 42 years’ age gap, their union was happy and they adopted two children.’ She continues, ‘Longford today is still a very much-

loved park and, funded by the National Lottery, many of the old buildings and gardens will be renovated. Living directly opposite Longford, I can easily access the specific atmosphere and spirit of the place. Its history is around me all the time it’s on my doorstep.’

Initially stimulated by curiosity, Juliette’s research for the book impacted her so profoundly that her interest in the Rylands couple and their home became ‘idées fixes‘.

She concludes, ‘This is a Northern story in a Northern setting and can stimulate local interest. Being a bit over-ambitious but honest, I do believe this story has ’legs’ and could easily be adapted for screen and stage. Period drama is presently very popular, perhaps as an escape from reality.

There’s a fascination for Victoriana which simultaneously offers nostalgia and ghoulishness. I’m being a bit ambitious, I know- but escaping into the world of Longford and hoping for its story to be spread is a dream which, for me, would be a lovely thing to happen.’

CHS continues partnership with TEDxManchester

For the third year running, CHS is proud to support TEDxManchester, one of the UK’s largest and most influential TEDx events, offering Waconians the chance to take part both behind the scenes and in the audience. Following last year’s success, this year’s event, held at the Bridgewater Hall, once again saw CHS pupils volunteering front-of-house and backstage, supporting the social media team and ensuring the event ran seamlessly.

Alongside this, a group of pupils were in the audience after having won tickets by participating in our very own CHEDx competition, where they were challenged to deliver TEDx-style talks on a subject they are passionate about to a live audience.

CHS’s involvement in TEDxManchester is just one example of the school’s outstanding co-curricular programme, which was recognised as a significant strength in our latest ISI inspection.

Outstanding runs earn places at National Championships

A group of Girls’ Division runners have qualified to represent Greater Manchester at the National Cross Country Championships after competing in the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships at Heaton Park at the beginning of February.

Despite challenging conditions and particularly tough terrain at the bottom of the course, these young athletes showcased incredible strength and determination.

Year 9 pupil Beatrix led the way, an impressive feat that set her apart by a significant margin: her dominant performance earned her first place and the title of Greater Manchester Schools Champion!

In addition to Beatrix’s outstanding achievement, Sasha (Year 11) and Eliza (Year 10) both contributed to the strong performance of the Inter girls (Year 10/11) team. This team finished first

overall, with Sasha securing 6th place individually and Eliza’s efforts also helping push the team to victory.

These three athletes, along with others from Greater Manchester, have qualified to represent the region at the National Championships in Sussex on Saturday, 15 March.

The Girls’ Division PE Department is incredibly proud of Beatrix, Sasha and Eliza, whose dedication and resilience in difficult conditions helped Bolton School make a mark at the event, and of all the girls who took part and gave their best in such tough conditions.

From science, sport and the arts, we are committed to ensuring that our pupils have opportunities to develop their skills beyond the classroom, preparing them to engage with the wider world. Mrs Laura Rossiter, CHS’s Academic High Performance Programme Lead, said:

“At CHS, we place great importance on oracy—an essential skill that empowers young people in their future education and careers. Our collaboration with TEDxManchester and our own CHEDx initiative give pupils a real-world opportunity to explore ideas, develop their public speaking skills, and engage with new perspectives”.

With pupils volunteering, speaking, and spectating, TEDxManchester continues to be an unmissable experience for our school community—one that embodies CHS’s commitment to curiosity, confidence, and lifelong learning.

Manchester schools unite for charity netball matches

On a crisp February evening, pupils from The Manchester Grammar School, Manchester High School for Girls, and Withington Girls’ School came together for a series of fundraising netball matches, demonstrating exceptional teamwork, resilience, and community spirit.

SGS hosts Young Magistrates’ Competition

Stockport Grammar School was delighted to host the Greater Manchester Magistrates Association for the local heats of the Year 6 Mock Trial Competition.

The competition saw six schools from the Stockport and Trafford areas take to the school’s historic Hallam Hall to battle it out as prosecution or defence teams in a scripted simulated trial.

The fictitious trial was based on online cyberbullying. The schools were tasked with prosecuting and defending a case of alleged use of abusive and threatening words and behaviour and had to determine whether the behaviour had the intent to cause distress. Pupil Magistrates, supported by a member of the Greater Manchester bench, deliberated on the verdict at the end of the Mock Trial and decided whether the defendant was guilty or innocent.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for pupils from three of Manchester’s leading schools to collaborate in a friendly yet competitive setting, all in support of a charitable cause. Despite the freezing conditions, enthusiasm remained high as players displayed great skill and sportsmanship on the court, united by a shared commitment to making a positive impact.

This initiative formed part of Withington Girls’ School’s Feel Fab Feb campaign, which encourages pupils to recognise the importance of self-development and well-being. The campaign promotes positive mental and physical health through engaging activities designed to build confidence, resilience, and a sense of community.

The matches not only highlighted the sporting abilities of the pupils but

also reinforced the significance of cooperation, leadership, and giving back. Events such as these serve as a testament to the strong partnerships between the Manchester schools and their dedication to fostering both individual growth and collective responsibility.

Marks were awarded for communication, confidence in delivery, knowledge of their role and court process. The two winning schools will secure a place in the Greater Manchester final of the mock trial competition which will be held in June at Helmsley House, Salford. As part of the initiative, the Greater Manchester Magistrates in the

Community Team, offer interactive talks to schools, colleges and community groups across Greater Manchester to explain how the Criminal Justice System works, and a range of Choices and Consequences workshops in topical areas such as Knife Crime, Cyberbullying and Drug use.

The King's School’s brilliantly updated take on Shakespeare was an ideal way to focus on the younger generation, with an updated storyline to feature punk, grime and grunge. It was fastpaced, word-perfect and jam-packed with delectable delights. Narrating the action were three wonderful latter-day presenters superbly mimicking the slick commentaries of the likes of Dec and Davina: Francesca Moss-Seymour, Chloe Green, and cheeky chappie Narayan Chakrabarty offered a 21stcentury focus on Shakespeare's timeless love triangles.

A magical Midsummer Night's Dream was “a complete joy from start to finish, with many laugh out loud moments”

Whilst all of the pupils deservedly stole the limelight, with standing ovations every night, at the heart of the action were the love-drunk sweethearts, alternately railing between devotion and detestation.

Experienced King's actor Will Gandy made a stunning entrance as Lysander, maintaining his natural comic timing and charismatic stage presence to milk the laughs. With the winsome Hattie James as Hermia, as, first, his heart's true desire and then his worst nightmare, they made the perfect couple for all the ages. Mimi Ross as the beguiling Helena and Elijah Craine as the testosterone-fuelled Demetrius ensured the twists and turns of the Bard's convoluted imagination stayed wonderfully on course.

Flying start to spring at Withington Girls’ School

The 2025 Spring term has got off to a flying start at Withington Girls’ School, thanks to some notable academic achievements, sports triumphs and a packed extra-curricular calendar.

Once again named as the Sunday Times North West Independent School of the Year for Academic Excellence, Withington has a strong record of attainment, supported by enriching opportunities outside the curriculum. WGS pupils regularly participate in academic competitions across the country, including, in the past two months, the UK Linguistics Olympiad and the University of Cambridge’s Chemistry Race. One Withington student has secured her place in the upcoming National Historical Association's Great Debate London final.

Year 13s are celebrating impressive university offers, with ten students holding offers from Oxford and

Cambridge and over 80% receiving offers from Russell Group institutions. One pupil has a degree apprenticeship offer from prestigious financial services multinational JP Morgan.

Beyond the classroom, Withington pupils have embraced a wide range of fun extra-curricular activities. Focusing on wellbeing and personal development, the popular Feel Fab Feb festival included a charity netball match, a gym and dance display, junior music festival, a Sixth Form music recital, and art events and book clubs. Former pupil, business owner and stand-up comedian Sharon von Simson encouraged pupils to discover their passion, and there was also digital wellbeing support for both pupils and parents.

Sporting success continues, with the U16 netballers reaching the England Netball National Schools final. Badminton players secured top finishes in the

Casting her spell as Queen Oberon was the mesmerising Phoebe Harrison, another star in the making, who thrilled the audience with her flashing smile and magnetic presence. She was so good that it was actually possible to believe Oberon was a woman in Julie Brown's original, intelligent and hugely creative rewrite of Shakespeare’s classic tale.

Her brilliant sprites, Ellie Tomlinson and Tom Heseltine, orchestrated the action as they combined for the classic role of Puck. Again, word-perfect, they engaged the audience and drew the viewer into the heart of the forest. The play within the play was wonderfully controlled by Annabelle Jordan as Rita Quince, with Brianna Gargoles as the bumptious but lovable Bottom, another classic role made all her own.

Manchester Schools Singles Competition, and the U16s took second place in the National School Championships regional round. Meanwhile, two lacrosse teams competed in the England Lacrosse National Schools Final this month, resulting in quarter-final and last 16 finishes.

Reflecting on the busy start to the year, Withington’s Deputy Head Academic, Mr Tom Bennett, said, “This half term has been filled with challenge, achievement, and community spirit. Whatever our pupils' ambitions, academic, creative, sporting, or beyond, we know that a strong foundation of self-confidence, resilience, and balance is key to reaching their full potential.”

Numquam Otio Torpebat

All round success at St Bede’s College this term demonstrates that Bedians live the school motto, “Numquam otio torpebat”, “Never rest in idleness” to the full.

From team success at the National level for the under-15 football team, who defeated many larger schools and are through to the semi-finals of the prestigious Independent Schools (ISFA) competition, to individual success for Head Boy Solomon, who took first place at the Regional Catenian Public speaking competition.

Solomon, who joined St Bede’s in nursery aged 3, impressed judges with a “clever, engaging and warm performance with star quality in abundance”. Solomon, a true Bedian, has certainly not been idle, implementing

a peer mentoring scheme for GCSE students, fundraising for the upcoming school trip to Lourdes and giving a stellar performance as Fagin in January’s school production of Oliver.

A production which is itself a finalist in the National School Theatre Awards, whose representative proclaimed the

production a resounding success. So, from sporting success to captivating, immersive theatre, St Bede’s places great importance on wider development, equipping students with 21st-century transferable skills such as resilience, cooperation, communication and leadership.

CHEAP AND CHEERFUL

HAVING done a round-up of some of the most expensive gadgetry on the planet (see last issue), it would only be fair to take a look at the other end of the market. This quest has been no less fun: if you’ve got unlimited cash then finding expensive things isn’t that hard – if you’re skint on the other hand, finding something interesting requires a lot more creativity. For a start, I’ve disregarded those big overseas websites that advertise things like 4k drones for less than a pound, including shipping. I’m talking about tech you can walk into a shop in the UK and buy for a real honest bargain. Here’s some ideas.

Smartphone projector, Flying Tiger, £16

This is a bit of fun, but it also genuinely works. All you need is a blank wall in a darkened room, and you can use this piece of kit to transform your smartphone into a home cinema projector. Don’t expect 3D surround sound at this price, but combined with a half-decent Bluetooth speaker, you can truly enjoy a big-screen viewing experience.

IKEA Jansjö LED USB lamp, £5

Add light to any workspace for just a fiver. This simply plugs into any USB socket, so you can use either a wall charger or the side of your laptop to bring a cosy glow to your immediate area without needing to put the big light on.

Wilko Power Bank 20000 mAh, £10.99

Yes, there are still Wilko stores on some UK high streets, with more scheduled for opening – and bargains galore like this. 20,000 mAh is a very impressive number for any power bank, especially one costing just a shade over a tenner. For reference, that’s enough to fully charge an iPhone between 4 and 6 times, depending on the model.

Digi Doods, The Works, £3

Remember the Tamagotchi craze of the ‘90s? Nowadays, you can get the same technology, without the brand name, for the price of a chocolate bar. Perfect for party bags, and with batteries included, these tiny virtual pets will quickly become an obsession for the next generation of kids.

JLAB Bluetooth Noise-Cancelling Earbuds, Currys, £29.99

I’ve often reviewed headphones and earbuds on this page, such as the audiophile options costing tens of thousands last time around. Never have I seen any that pack this many features into such a low-priced package. Active Noise Cancelling used to be something you’d only see in top-end tech – now you can get it in a reputable electronics shop for about the same price as a bottle of wine.

THE GREAT FOREST OF THE EAST OutdOors

SO often when writing this page, I’m reminded of how privileged we are to live here in the North West. We are truly surrounded by some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery right on our doorstep.

To the north of the region, we have the Lake District and the Forest of Bowland, to the south there’s the Peak District, the Pennines to the east, and to our west we can get to the beaches and mountains of North Wales before breakfast.

An area we haven’t talked about before, just slightly further south and east, is the magnificent National Forest –which starts just across the border in Derbyshire and covers 200 square miles of woodlands, meadows, hedgerows and waterways all the way across to Leicestershire.

What better time to be reminded of this stunning area, as at the time of going to print we will see the 16th annual National Forest Walking Festival taking place in the second half of May.

Thanks to a team of volunteers, this year’s Walking Festival showcases the incredible diversity of the National Forest through a wide range of guided walks and outdoor experiences.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or taking your first steps into nature, the festival has something for everyone:

• Gentle, Accessible Walks: More than 20 routes under three miles, ideal for families, those with limited mobility, or anyone seeking a relaxed exploration. Buggy-friendly parkland trails and well-surfaced paths ensure accessibility for wheelchairs, trampers, and mobility scooters.

• Sensory Experiences: Thoughtfully curated walks designed to engage the senses, offering a unique way to connect with nature for those with sensory needs.

• Beginner Adventures: Guided nature-bimbles, like the stroll around Beacon Hill to explore tree life and wildlife, perfect for those new to walking.

• Challenging Treks: Energetic ten-mile routes through iconic landscapes, such as Calke Abbey and its reservoirs, for those seeking adventure and spectacular views.

The National Forest was the first broadleaf forest to be created at scale in England for more than 900 years and is now seen as one of the boldest environmentally led regeneration initiatives in the country. It has transformed a post-industrial landscape – scarred by coal mining and heavy industry - from black to green.

SANTA FE’S GLOW-UP

WHAT is it with Korean cars suddenly being stunners? We’ve used the headline “Korea Progression” in years gone by, but it feels like they’re taking things to the next level right now.

When brands like Kia and Hyundai first entered the UK market, they were synonymous with affordable, dependable motoring - with marketing that felt more in line with kitchen appliances. Industry-leading long warranties were far more of a selling point than styling or desirability.

But recently, we’ve seen the likes of the Kia Stinger truly competing on the world stage as a cool, sporty coupé-style grand tourer, and along with the logo refresh, a major investment in top-level designers to revolutionise the entire Kia range.

Hyundai is no different, and the chalk-and-cheese differences between the new Santa Fe and its predecessors are a perfect example. It’s no accident that the Santa Fe has been scooping up awards left, right and centre from some of the world’s biggest car magazines.

As always, it was the looks that first piqued my interest. Just another SUV; this is not. The new Santa Fe features a drastically different, more rugged and sophisticated design. It has a bold, distinctive look that sets it apart from previous generations. The interior also showcases a significant upgrade in materials and design, creating a more premium feel.

Hyundai has loaded the new Santa Fe with advanced technology, including upgraded infotainment systems, driver-assistance features, and safety technologies. The focus on digital displays and connectivity further contributes to the upmarket feel.

Reflecting these improvements, the new Santa Fe comes with a higher price tag, starting from £47,200, placing it in a more competitive position with premium SUVs.

With variants and options pushing into the £60k bracket, Hyundai has clearly elevated the Santa Fe from a practical family SUV to a more refined and luxurious vehicle. This move upmarket is a deliberate strategy to attract a broader range of customers and compete with established premium brands.
