Editor’s Letter: Fresh Starts & Grand Gestures
Well, here we are – 2025. The champagne flutes are washed and we’re officially in the swing of a brand-new year. January’s already given us its usual mix of fresh-start energy and postholiday hibernation, but now, as we ease into February and March, it’s time to really wake up.
Spring is teasing us with longer days and the promise of warmer afternoons, and with it comes the season of love, indulgence, and a few selective New Year’s resolutions. If you’ve already abandoned Dry January and your gym membership is already gathering dust, you’re in excellent company. But why do resolutions have to be about restriction? I’ve decided to make my 2025 the year of MORE – more joy, more adventure and more reasons to celebrate.
Speaking of celebrations, the Glossy Christmas Party was another huge success – full of incredible style, unforgettable moments, and a whole lot of fun. A massive thank you to our sponsors and everyone who contributed in any way and made it a night to remember! Be sure to flick through this issue for the fabulous photos – yes, those dance floor moments included. And for those already counting down, details of our 2025 party will be revealed very soon.
Valentine’s Day is on the horizon, and whether you’re planning a romantic weekend away or a chic dinner for two, why not celebrate by supporting your favourite local restaurants and shops? So many incredible independent businesses are struggling, and a little love goes a long way. Say I love you with a gift that keeps a small business thriving.
Mother’s Day is the ultimate excuse to spoil the incredible women in our lives – think indulgent brunches, timeless gifts, and little luxuries that say thank you in the most fabulous way possible. And just like Valentine’s Day, it’s the perfect opportunity to support local. From charming florists to boutique bakeries whipping up the dreamiest cakes, there’s no better way to show appreciation than by investing in the businesses that make our communities special.
This issue is all about embracing the new season, so, here’s to fresh beginnings, big love, and a year that’s as bold as we want it to be.

We’re all about hearts and flowers this season as February arrives, and it’s the most romantic month of the year! But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get loved up for the rest of spring, as there’s lots to adore out there this season.
Floaty frocks, as seen on the Chloé Catwalk, are definitely a trend for 2025, and John Lewis has just the right look in their botanic ruffle maxi.
Early spring is also a time for snuggling up on the sofa, but as nights get lighter, then so should our loungewear. So, ditch the red holly sprigged outfits for something more springlike like this satin short PJ set from Accessorize.
Finally, if you are looking for a romantic gift for your loved one this Valentine’s Day, invest in pretty, sexy, playful lingerie. It’s sure to get your hearts beating. Kiss, kiss!!

Nederlands Dans Theater and Complicité present
FIGURES IN EXTINCTION
at Aviva Studios, home of Factory International
Experience a moving and timely new work from choreographer Crystal Pite and director Simon McBurney – the culmination of their award-winning dance trilogy exploring the age of disconnection.
Humanity’s impact on the natural world is greater than ever before. How can artists meaningfully create in the face of mass destruction? For the past four years, choreographer Crystal Pite and Complicité artistic director and co-founder Simon McBurney have weaved their hopes and fears for our current moment into the dance trilogy Figures in Extinction. In Spring 2025, Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) and Complicité will present the final instalment of this major new collaboration here at Aviva Studios – performed by the astounding NDT 1 dancers.
The first work, Figures in Extinction [1.0] – a sweeping exploration of species and environments we have lost and are losing –premiered in The Hague in 2022, receiving the top prize for a dance production at the 2022 Nederlandse Dansdagen.
The second work, which premiered in February 2024, is a searing look at our need for connection in a separated world. Making its world premiere at Aviva Studios, Figures in Extinction [3.0] is the third and final piece of this moving trilogy, offering a spark in the darkness as to where we might go next through a mixture of dance, video and spoken word.
The performance at Aviva Studios brings together parts one, two and the never-before-seen part three and is the first chance to experience the Figures in Extinction series as a whole.
Co-created by Crystal Pite – who is known for her breathtaking and boundary-pushing work in dance – and celebrated actor, writer, director and co-founder of Complicité Simon McBurney, Figures in Extinction is a thought-provoking meditation on the natural world and our relationship to it.

Why International Women’s Day on March 8th is all about redressing the balance
Gender equality seems like a given when we consider all the brilliant women of Cheshire and Manchester who have high profile careers spanning the law, commerce, education, the arts, fashion, the media and more.
And yet the World Economic Forum reckons that at the current rate of progress, it will take 134 years, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity in 2158.
It’s this shock statistic which has fuelled the theme of International Women’s Day on March 8th which is Accelerate Action. It’s a call to action which urges everyone to take swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality and calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.
International Women’s Day may appear on the surface to a be a recent phenomenon but in fact, it dates back more than a century, long before the feminists were burning bras and demanding equality in the 1960s.
In 1909 an “International Woman’s Day” was first proposed by an activist called Theresa Malkiel and it was loosely based on the urban legend commemorating a protest by women garment workers in New York City, on March 8, 1857.
On March 19, 1911, International Women’s Day was officially marked for the first time. More than one million people celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Women demanded the right to vote, to fight against sex discrimination in the workplace, and to hold public office.
Ever since then International Women’s Day has gained momentum and with the advent of the internet, the message has a wider reach than ever before.
To help to literally speed up gender equality, International Women’s Day 2025 will highlight ways in which people can take steps to impact on the advancement of women – they include:
• Calling out stereotypes
Challenging discrimination
Celebrating women’s success
Questioning bias
Sharing knowledge
Frodsham-based Jodie Salt, who helps women achieve their full potential with her executive coaching and feminine leadership business explains how she views the issues women are facing.
“Whilst there’s the obvious things to focus on when it comes to gender equality, specifically in terms of processes or policies that need to be introduced, as an Executive Coach (specialising in women in leadership) and behavioural change expert, I think it’s also important to make some more subtle culture shifts but that would have a big impact,” she says.
By Janet Reeder
Jodie Salt
“Let’s just take the workplace as an example. It is and always has been a male coded environment, made by men, for men, in the context of acceptable behaviour. This has all been based on masculine energy e.g. task focused, logical, outcome driven, competitive etc.
“As we evolve in the 21st century, people, especially women, would benefit from being led and working in conditions that are based on more feminine energy traits such as intuition, emotional intelligence, collaboration, creativity - regardless of whether their manager is a woman or a man.
“Fewer women would leave jobs, suffer from burnout and have the opportunity to thrive and have balance in their life and work,” she concludes.
Another Cheshire woman involved in promoting the achievements of women is Jacqueline Hughes Lundy. Jacqueline from Hale has spent over 30 years working to promote and support women through the Inspiring Women Awards network.
She is now embarking on a quest to recognise and develop the potential of women in their Third Quarter.
She explains: “With life expectancy raising from 68 in the 1950s to 81 in the
2000s (Macrotrends), women in the 50-75 age group are behaving very differently to their mothers. A quick Google of ‘Women in their 50s-70s lifestyles/ economic activities’ leads you to sites such as: Mature Women Dating, Buy Dresses for Older Women and Best Wigs for Older Women. Articles don’t fare much better, concentrating on the crisis side of this age group – failing health, empty nests, isolation and lack of purpose.
“Is this what Third Quarter women must look forward to?
“Thankfully not, and I’m not alone in finding this stage of life, with all its potential, exciting. According to Forbes, women in their 50+s are not disappearing into a sherry fuelled haze wearing dodgy wigs and scouring mature online dating sites but seizing the opportunity to reinvent themselves by embracing entrepreneurship. Oh, and by the way, 80% Of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women Are 50+”
She says: “According to Avivah Wittenberg-Cox, a thought leader specialising in gender and generational balance and who explored the concept of us experiencing four quarter lives in her book Thriving to 100: “The majority of men hit the big-time power and influencing positions in their 50s and 60s (the tech sector being the notable
exception). And because most women still madly juggle the impossible contradictions of capitalism, careers and care (of children, elders, spouses, and anyone else who needs them) in Q2, they tend to blossom a tad later, on average. They have less linear, ‘squigglier’ careers, and then suddenly explode from the sidelines, raring to go once their Q2-caring-priorities are satisfactorily completed”.
Jacqueline is now joining forces with another Third Quarter woman, Leadership & Change Expert, Claire-Marie Boggiano in developing ways to support locally & Internationally Third Quarter Women wanting to embrace all the benefits of this stage and thus ‘explode from the sidelines’.

Brighten up the season with the happiest of colours
Think pink for your interiors this season. Not only will it brighten up your days, but it has a subtle psychological influence that can instantly put you into a state of relaxation, exactly what you need for a living space!
This is a hue associated with femininity, kindness and - of course – romance. It’s generally the colour associated with love and St Valentine's Day.
While you can choose from bright pops of fuchsia and magenta at one end of the spectrum, there are other shades of pale pink that are perfect for creating that relaxing environment; in fact, there’s even a shade called ‘drunk tank pink’ which has been used in prisons to calm inmates.
Pink is associated with the boudoir, but you can also use it to dramatic effect in a living space, a kitchen or a bathroom, especially if you want to ramp up the glamour factor.
And as we move away from the safety of neutral tones and minimalist spaces towards interiors that are filled with personality, 2025 is definitely a time to explore colour.
The perfect time, in fact, for your happy place to be (literally) in the pink.

Mutiny on the Bounty
sipping Mai Tais on deck, sailing around the world to Tahiti.
When Lord Muck surprised me with an early Valentine’s present - a five-day sailing course in Gibraltar, I was over the moon. With only a couple of days to prepare, I spent the time wisely - hitting the shops for the perfect nautical wardrobe. We’re talking Breton stripes, crisp white cropped trousers, and pretty deck shoes. A surefire investment as they’d get so much use once I had learned to sail and we were
However, from the moment I stepped onto the 48-foot yacht and nearly fell to my death off the passerelle (a glorified gangplank) I realised sailing was not going to be as easy as I had imagined. The yacht was so cramped it appeared to be de signed for marines, not mortals. The skipper bore a striking resemblance to Captain Bligh. And I quickly discovered that “ducking” wasn’t optional - it was a survival skill. By day two, my poor head had suffered so many bumps from the boom - whose sole purpose in life ap peared to be to decapitate me - that I started to wish I had Fletcher Christian on board to save me. Or at least make me a Mai Tai.
project. Captain Bligh II looked on, clearly wishing he was back in 1789 when flog ging was allowed.
And then there was the issue of my stomach. The Straits of Gibraltar, it turns out, are not forgiving to those of us without sea legs. I spent an alarming amount of time leaning over the rail, turning green, while Lord Muck patted my back sympathetically. Meanwhile, my hair transformed into an electrified bird’s nest - a shocking state which to be fair, probably deserved to be punished by a keelhauling.
By day three, my optimism had well and truly drowned. After failing yet again to steer without going completely off course, I burst into tears. “I can’t do this; I want to go home!” I wailed. Lord Muck, bless him, was endlessly patient. “You’re doing great, darling,” he said, though his sideways glance at Captain Bligh II suggested otherwise.
Lord Muck, naturally, took to sailing like a duck to water. I, however, spent most of the time floundering like a fish out of it. I couldn’t tell port from starboard and thought the tiller was some sort of fancy serving spoon. Knots? Don’t get me started. The “bowline” might as well have been a riddle in ancient Greek. Every time I tied one, it somehow ended up re sembling a small child’s spaghetti art
By the end of the course, my shipmates had all mastered the dark arts of tacking, gybing, and docking. Me? I had mastered the art of staying out of the way.
By Catherine Saunders / Read
As we disembarked, I have never been happier to touch solid ground. Lord Muck, on the other hand, seemed genuinely bereft. I could see his dreams of a roundthe-world voyage slipping further away with every step we took down the gangplank. Right up until the moment I saw the good captain hand him his card: “You just give me a call if you fancy joining my crew. Got a trip leaving from the West Indies to Ta hiti next month”. At which point, I watched in amusement as Lord Muck picked up his pace and legged it down the dock. Seems I wasn’t the only one ter rified of Captain Bligh II…
The Woof Guide to Nottingham
Peppa feels the love in the city of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men.
I didn’t know a great deal about Nottingham, as it seems to be one of those cities that is a little bit under the radar. Robin Hood, Russell Crowe who played the legendary figure in a 2010 movie and Brian Clough the legendary boss at Nottingham Forrest were the only associations made before we set off on our travels.
We were staying at the lovely four-star Lace Market Hotel, a gem of a Georgian townhouse in the heart of the quarter-mile historic quarter for which it is named.
By Janet Reeder
The Lace Market used to be at the centre of the world’s lace industry during the 18th and 19th centuries and is filled full of heritage buildings and winding streets. Warehouses and lace showrooms have now been replaced by bars, restaurants and shops but it retains a lot of charm and there’s a really good vibe in the area.
I was given one of the best welcomes ever when I arrived at the hotel, the staff couldn’t wait to pick me up and I got loads of cuddles before we made our way to a lovely suite with big Georgian windows overlooking the elegant buildings on the charmingly named High Pavement. It was a gorgeous room with a huge comfortable bed, living space and state-of-the-art bathroom. It felt like home with added luxury which is exactly what pooches want from a hotel.
This area of the city is the perfect place to relax and wander and there was no shortage of attention for me. In fact, I was mobbed every time I went out. I definitely felt the love. Here, you’ll find Nottingham Contemporary, a brilliant modern art gallery which has some excel lent exhibitions. When we visited, there was a brilliant show from a black artist, Donald Rodney. Well, I say we, but I wasn’t allowed into the gallery bit. Ho wever, the downstairs café welcomes dogs with open arms, so the humans were able to take turns to visit the exhibition.
Nottingham is a bit of a culinary hot spot with the Michelin-starred Sat Bains leading the charge into high-end cuisine, however, there are plenty of cheaper places to bring your pet such as Bill’s and Bistrot Pierre.
The humans decided on the uber-stylish Coco Tang restaurant and coffee bar, where I was once again mobbed by the locals. Mostly young women cooing over my fluffy presence.
How could I not love such a friendly, lively city where I was made to feel like a princess? I adored every minute and can’t wait for the humans to take me back!

A Hidden Gem
Hotel La Gemma in Florence is the perfect location for romantics everywhere
Travelling from Pisa Airport (Ryanair from Manchester) to Florence on the unappealing-sounding Pismover train, the landscape soon gives way to lush forests of pine trees, Italianate houses and vineyards and then Florence itself, birthplace of the Renaissance and the must-see city for anyone interested in art, architecture and of course romance!
We head for Hotel La Gemma, a divine boutique hotel created with love by five siblings of the Cecchi family (the hotel name is actually made up of initials of the quintet’s own forenames). It’s a true gem in the heart of the city, literally minutes away from sightseeing hotspots like Piazza della Repubblica, the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza del Duomo and via de’ Tornabuoni. The colour scheme combines relaxing forest greens and pinks with wallpaper accents. The result is modern, elegant and utterly romantic.
One of the hotel’s main advantages is its discreetness. Tucked away off one of the main shopping streets with Miu Miu, Prada and Zara just two minutes stroll away, it’s a dreamy hideaway set within the stunning 19th-century Palazzo Paoletti that has been considerately and tastefully designed to suit modern travellers who want mod cons coupled with distinctive design.
Each of the 39 rooms in this hotel is unique. For my stay, I had a sitting room with a view of Le Duomo’s famous cupola. The bed was king-sized and luxurious with crisp white linens and blush pink bedspread. An ode to Art Deco decadence but with a decidedly contemporary ambience. Lovers who come here can play their own soundtrack on a Marshall Bluetooth speaker in the room or browse thousands of channels on the TV if they want to take in a rom-com.
Embracing the luxury of La Gemma means you can even have activities curated to suit your mood. This could be anything. A visit to the famous Uffizi gallery, crammed with art from such greats as Botticelli, Michaelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, or
the playful Gucci Museum with its inspired displays of bags and clothing. Or you could head off as we did to one of the most exclusive private perfumeries in Florence.
At Profumoir, the experience is an olfactory sensation. Here, you can learn all about the heady fragrances which make up the perfumery’s collection. On our visit, for example, we go through the selection of seven base fragrances ranging from sweet jasmine to incense, considered one of the most spiritual ingredients that we are told: “connected people to the higher powers.”
Then there is the chance to create a personalised perfume with the help of the highly trained staff. As a Valentine’s treat a must is the special couple’s experience aimed at creating a bespoke fragrance for the both of you. The ultimate expression of love! Our visit ends with smouldering charcoal laced with Oud and frankincense in a very special incense ceremony before we head out into the winding streets back to the hotel.
La Gemma’s intimate restaurant LUCA helmed by chef Paulo Airaudo offers up an exquisite taste of Italy with elegance and refinement and its tasting menus are memorable allowing us to indulge in delightful dishes such as pigeon encased with soft melting pasta, goat cheese flan with persimmon caramel.
This is in contrast with the more traditional dining experience at the bustling Trattoria Marrione on Via della Spada, where the chianti flows with the conversation and steaming plates of pasta to share.
The next day, despite the hangovers, we take a food and wine tour courtesy of the very knowledgeable and entertaining Linda Sorgiovanni of Italy Customised. Breakfast at La Gemma is too good to resist, but so too are the delights that await at Slitti a family-run chocolate business. (Andre Slitti invented the chocolate spoon!) And the local indoor market where there’s more wine and lots to ensure that you get a true taste of Italy.

Our villa, pool, and gardens were meticulously maintained, and the resort itself was immaculate. Breakfast at The Watercourt, set against the serene lagoon, was a beautiful start to each day, and Banyan Café was perfect for a midday indulgence, casual evening meal, or pre-dinner drinks.
Exploring the resort was effortless – bicycles were available throughout our stay, and buggies could be called at any time for a quick ride to the restaurants or spa.
A Phuket Experience to Remember
During our nine-night stay, we ventured beyond the resort for temple tours, a visit to Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, and a hands-on Cookery Class. The kids enjoyed a Beach Club, while we visited Phuket Old Town, and they had an eventful evening on Bangla Road – a must-see both by day and at night – but the least said about that, the better!
Banyan Tree Phuket is a luxury resort that doesn’t do anything by halves. A sanctuary where Thai hospitality reigns. Thank you Banyan Tree for a wonderful stay.

Our Experience
From the moment we stepped inside, the hotel’s inviting warmth, effortlessly stylish spaces, and impeccable service transported us to a world of relaxed sophistication.
Aside from that, the hotel was far more than we expected. We stayed in one of the larger rooms, thoughtfully designed with both style and comfort in mind. All rooms have floor to ceiling windows, Tribe signature bed, with space underneath to store your suitcase, Kevin Murphy skincare amenities, rain showers, smart TV, safe, garment steamer, hairdryer, complimentary tea, coffee and bottled water. The sleek furnishings and wellappointed amenities made our stay feel both luxurious and effortless.
We enjoyed a glass of Gavi at TRIBE Bar before moving over to TRIBE Table for our meal. We started with Zucchini Fritti and a Prawn Caesar Salad, followed by mains of Grilled Fillet of Seabass with Wild Broccoli
and Salsa Verde, and Roast Chicken with Rosemary Potatoes. Despite being completely satisfied, we couldn’t resist trying the Venetian Tiramisu and Mixed Berry Panna Cotta – both of which were recommended and utterly delicious.
The entire experience was wonderful. The casually dressed yet highly professional staff were attentive and welcoming, the food was exceptional, and the extensive drinks menu ensured there was something for every taste. TRIBE Manchester Airport (and its £80 million investment) exceeded our expectations, and we would absolutely book a stay here in the future.
A contemporary hotel just minutes from Terminal 2, it offers a refreshing, stylish take on airport hospitality.

Understanding Male Menopause: Andropause.
When we think of menopause, the image of women in their late 40s or early 50s, experiencing hormonal changes, often comes to mind. However, men, too, go through a form of hormonal shift, known as andropause or late-onset hypogonadism (LOH). Though less discussed, this condition can be as impactful as its female counterpart.
What is Andropause?
Andropause is a term used to describe the gradual decline in testosterone levels in men, typically occurring between the ages of 40 and 60. This decline is natural, but it often goes unnoticed due to its subtle onset and gradual progression.
Testosterone, a key hormone in male health, is responsible for various functions, including libido, muscle mass, bone density, mood regulation, and cognitive performance. As testosterone levels drop, men may start noticing a range of physical and emotional symptoms.
The symptoms of andropause vary widely and include fatigue, decreased libido, irritability, depression, reduced muscle mass, increased body fat, and difficulty concentrating. Some men may also experience a drop in sexual performance or erectile dysfunction. These symptoms can be distressing and often overlap with other conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and depression. This makes diagnosis challenging.
What is Late-Onset Hypogonadism?
Late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) is another term used to describe the decline in testosterone levels, often linked to andropause. It is characterised by low testosterone levels, confirmed by blood tests, along with symptoms of testosterone deficiency. Unlike andropause, which describes a broad age-related decline, LOH is more precisely defined by clinical symptoms and laboratory findings.
While testosterone levels naturally decline with age, it is important to note that not all men will experience symptoms of LOH. Studies show that only a minority of men with low testosterone levels will exhibit noticeable symptoms. Genetics, lifestyle factors, and underlying health conditions (such as obesity, diabetes, or chronic stress) all play a role in determining the severity of symptoms.
Treatment and Management
For men struggling with the symptoms of andropause or LOH, treatment options exist. Hormone replacement therapy
(HRT) or testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is commonly prescribed to restore testosterone levels to a more normal range. This can help alleviate symptoms like fatigue, low libido, and mood changes. However, TRT is not without risks, including possible prostate issues, so men considering treatment should consult with their urologist to assess the potential benefits and drawbacks.
In addition to hormone therapy, lifestyle changes such as exercise, balanced nutrition, stress management, smoking cessation and adequate sleep can help manage symptoms. Regular check-ups and blood tests are essential to monitor testosterone levels and overall health, ensuring a more comfortable transition through this stage of life.
Male menopause, andropause or LOH, is a natural part of ageing, yet it remains under-recognised in society. By understanding the signs and seeking appropriate treatment, men can better navigate this phase of life, maintaining both physical and emotional well-being as they age.

Winter Sports Injury Clinic
This 2024/2025 snow season, more than a million people will leave the UK and head to the slopes. If you’re planning a trip, then you need to ensure that you take all the necessary precautions to try to prevent any accidents from occurring.
Although skiing and snowboarding are great fun, and provide excellent exercise, they can be dangerous, and injuries do often happen.
Every day during snow season, more than 1,000 UK residents get injured, with sprains, fractures and breaks being extremely common, so the OrthTeam regularly provides medical advice to many of these patients overseas and expedites treatment once they are back home.
It can be very daunting if you or a family member does get injured and are told that you/they need treatment for the injury. It’s important that you make an informed decision as to whether to have treatment abroad or delay it until you arrive back in the UK.
Our leading experts have put together a quick guide below to help you determine which injuries require immediate treatment and what can potentially wait.
Dislocations
This is when a joint comes apart and is extremely painful. The most common ski dislocation is in the shoulder. This injury requires immediate reduction of the dislocation at an urgent care facility abroad, however, further treatment thereafter can often wait.
Fractures
Open fractures are where the bone communicates with the skin through a wound. These require urgent attention abroad. Closed fractures, however, can often wait. Sometimes, if the bone is very severely displaced and out of position, it can be improved by manipulation under local anaesthetic abroad and placed in a plaster back slab to maintain a reasonable position. Definitive treatment can then be planned back in the UK.
Ligament injuries
Almost all ligament injuries can wait until you arrive back in the UK, but we recommend that you are assessed
urgently by a specialist on your return. The most common ligament injuries that occur on the slopes are to the knee and the thumb, with ‘skier’s thumb’ being one of the most common snow sports ligament injury.
Spinal and head injuries
Severe spinal and head injuries often require specialist assessment abroad. Always wear a helmet, and with children, consider a spinal support. These may prevent their head and/or spinal injuries from colliding into a solid object, such as a tree, and can also offer protection from being hit by another out-of-control skier.

Meet Anaya, a busy Waconian at Cheadle Hulme School! Currently, in Year 6, she has been at the School since Reception (aged 4) and can often be found outside playing with her friends at lunchtime or taking part in the many clubs and activities she enjoys. Her favourite subjects include Maths and English.
What does a day in the life of a pupil at CHS look like?
A day at CHS is busy but exciting: sometimes I have clubs, like Chamber Choir, before lessons even start!
We begin the school day with Maths and English, which I really enjoy, before a run around in the playground with friends and a quick snack. After break, we have lessons like Science, Humanities, Art or Computing. I love lunchtime; I really enjoy the choice of food, especially the desserts! Sometimes I go to ‘Library Chill’, or I take part in a lunchtime sports club.
Regular high-quality massage therapy offers a multitude of benefits that encompass both physical and mental health. Below are the key advantages:
I also have private piano lessons in the Senior School, which I really like because it helps me picture myself there next year.
I love the variety of clubs on offer after school, too, and recently attended MUNCH (Model United Nations at Cheadle Hulme). It’s really improved my debating skills and confidence working with older children.
How do you balance academics, co-curricular activities, and social time?
The school timetable makes it easy to manage everything. I try to do my homework as soon as I get home so
I have time to relax. I enjoy reading or playing with my younger brother, who’s in Reception at CHS. It’s fun seeing him around school.
What advice would you give to new pupils joining the school?
I would say not to worry, everyone’s so friendly, and you’ll make friends quickly. Try lots of clubs, and most importantly, have fun.

Heart rhythm refers to the pattern of electrical impulses that coordinate your heartbeats. Electrical impulses are signals that tell your heart when to beat, keeping it in sync with your body’s needs. These impulses ensure that the heart contracts and pumps blood efficiently. A healthy heart rhythm is steady, typically beating 60–100 times per minute at rest. However, this rate can vary depending on factors like activity level, emotions, or health conditions.
When this rhythm goes awry, it’s called an arrhythmia. Arrhythmias can range from harmless irregularities to life -threatening conditions that require immediate medical attention.
Why Does Heart Rhythm Matter?
A stable heart rhythm ensures that your organs receive a consistent supply of oxygen-rich blood. When the rhythm becomes irregular, too fast, or too slow, it can lead to symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath. In severe cases, irregular rhythms can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, or more.
For example:
Atrial fibrillation (AF): This common arrhythmia causes an irregular and often rapid heartbeat, significantly raising the risk of stroke and heart fatigue in the long run.
Bradycardia: A heart rate that is too slow can reduce oxygen delivery, leaving you feeling faint or fatigued.
Tachycardia: A fast heart rate can strain the heart over time, potentially leading to more serious conditions.
Caring for Your Heart Rhythm
The good news is that heart rhythm disorders can often be managed, and early intervention plays a critical role in preventing complications. Heart rhythm care focuses on identifying irregularities, understanding their causes, and implementing strategies to restore or maintain a healthy rhythm.
Here’s how you can take control: Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to warning signs such as palpitations, chest discomfort, or unexplained fatigue.
Monitor Your Heart: Wearable devices, like smartwatches, now offer heart rate tracking and can detect irregular rhythms. One downside of wearable devices is the risk of health anxiety and over-monitoring the heart rhythm which needs to be borne in mind. It’s important to balance monitoring with mindful interpretation to avoid unnecessary worry.
Adopt a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and
stress management can improve over all heart function and reduce the risk of arrhythmias.
Seek Professional Help: If you notice persistent irregularities, consult a specialist in heart rhythm care. Appropriate investigation can be arranged to make an evaluation. If needed treatment include medication and specific procedures to help reduce arrhythmia burden can be considered.
Introducing Rhythm Care
Rhythm care is a holistic approach to heart health that blends cutting-edge technology with lifestyle modifications. It’s about more than treating symptoms; it’s about understanding the root causes of arrhythmias and empowering patients to lead healthier lives.
Specialists in rhythm care use tools like electrocardiograms (ECGs), wearable monitors to detect irregularities early and if indicated perform electrophysiological studies to better understand the nature of the rhythm disturbance. These insights guide personalized treatments, helping patients regain confidence in their health.
Your Heart Deserves Attention
Your heart works tirelessly to keep you going—so give it the attention it deserves. Whether it’s by making lifestyle changes or seeking professional guidance, taking steps to understand and care for your heart rhythm can profoundly impact your quality of life.
A healthy rhythm is the key to a healthy life. Let’s take it to heart!
A Vision of Elegance: Fox Brothers Styling Opticians in West Didsbury
Nestled
along the chic and bustling Burton Road, opposite the iconic Metropolitan pub, Fox Brothers Styling Opticians is redefining the eyewear experience in West Didsbury.
A third-generation family business run by brothers Johny and Nick Fox, this boutique optician promises not just eye care but an indulgent and stylish journey into bespoke frame styling.
From the moment I stepped through their doors, I was enveloped in a sense of understated luxury. The welcoming team greeted me with a cappuccino, while soothing background music and the gentle aroma of scented candles set the stage for what felt more like a spa visit than a trip to the opticians.
Nick, the clinical expert, guided me through a cutting-edge eye examination using state-of-the-art equipment. The meticulous process included a retinal photograph to screen for conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other vascular diseases. Nick’s calm professionalism made the process seamless, and his thoughtful explanation of the results gave me complete confidence in their expertise.
Once the clinical assessment was complete, it was time for Johny to work his magic. As the Dispensing Optician, Johny’s attention to detail and eye for aesthetics were unparalleled. He began
by asking about my lifestyle, personal style preferences, and even my day-today activities. His mission? To find frames that not only suited my face but also reflected my individuality.
Within moments, Johny presented a curated selection of six stunning frames, saving me the overwhelming task of sifting through hundreds. It was a bespoke experience at its finest, ensuring that every detail, from colour to fit, was tailored perfectly to me.
The fitting process was equally meticulous. From ensuring the lens power was spot-on to testing the comfort of the frames on my nose and ears, no detail was overlooked. I also received practical tips for caring for my glasses, along with a stylish cleaning kit, which included their signature “magic” cleaning spray and a promise of complimentary refills.
For those concerned about budgeting, interest-free payment plans are available
on request, making luxury eyewear more accessible without compromising on quality.
As a finishing touch, I was treated to a box of handmade truffles – a delightful gesture that perfectly encapsulated Fox Brothers’ commitment to customer care. And, as I walked out with my new eyewear nestled in a custom-made case inside an elegant bag, I couldn’t help but feel that I’d experienced something truly unique.
This is not your average optician’s visit; it’s a masterclass in bespoke service and artisanal craftsmanship. Yes, the experience is a premium one, but for the quality and care you receive, it’s worth every penny.
Fox Brothers Styling Opticians offers more than just glasses – it offers a statement piece that complements your style, personality, and vision.

Helmed by Chef Hom Nath (Binod), whose expertise in Nepalese cuisine shines through every dish, delivering a masterclass in bold, aromatic flavours –using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients.
The menu is a love letter to Nepalese gastronomy, with an enticing array of dishes that range from delicate momos (dumplings) to hearty curries and vibrant stir-fries. Vegetarians and vegans are also well catered for, with plenty of plantbased delights on offer.
We kicked things off with chargrilled lamb chops (£12.45) succulent, spicekissed, and cooked to perfection in the charcoal tandoor.
The Durbar Sizzler (£23.00) was a showstopper, featuring a mouthwatering medley of lamb chops, seekh kebab, chicken tikka, prawn kebab, and fish tikka, all served with crisp salad and a side of zesty sauce. The Okra Fry (£6.95), golden and crisp with a medley of
fragrant spices, proved utterly addictive, while the Gobi Manchurian (£6.95) –a Nepalese Chinese fusion of wok-fried cauliflower – offered a punchy, umami-laden kick.
For mains, the Durbar Lamb Biryani (£15.95) was an instant favourite: tender,
spiced lamb nestled within fluffy, fragrant rice, served with cooling raita. The Dal Makhani (£10.95), a creamy medley of black lentils and red kidney beans, was pure comfort in a bowl, while the Butter Chicken (£12.95) delivered a rich, velvety tomato-based sauce that clung lovingly to every bite of chicken tikka.
To finish? A Mango & Coffee Kulfi (£5.95) –smooth, sweet, and indulgently refreshing. And, of course, this feast was washed down with an obligatory pint of Cobra and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc for good measure.

Giving up Drinking?
Or thinking about it?
There’s nothing quite like catching up with friends over a glass of wine or enjoying a well-crafted cocktail on a night out. It’s social, it’s fun, and let’s be honest – it’s a ritual many of us look forward to after a long week. But when you start adding up the units, the numbers can be a little alarming. The recommended limit for women is 14 units a week, which equates to roughly six medium glasses of wine or seven gin and tonics.
Realistically, many of us are exceeding that without even realising.
So, what’s the solution? Giving up drinking altogether might feel like the obvious choice, but it’s not always that simple. Alcohol is woven into the fabric of our social lives. The idea of raising a glass of sparkling water while your friends sip on something stronger doesn’t quite have the same appeal.
Spencer Matthews, former reality star turned wellness advocate, who understands this struggle all too well. After making the decision to quit drinking, he found himself searching for alternatives that didn’t compromise on taste or experience. When he couldn’t find what he was looking for, he created it himself –CleanCo – a range of premium non-alcoholic spirits designed to replicate the real thing, minus the hangover.
From a crisp Clean G&T to rich and warming Whisky and Rum alternatives, CleanCo offers a stylish solution for those wanting to cut back without missing out.
By Beverley Uddin-Khandakar

So, if you’re looking to embrace a more mindful approach to drinking without sacrificing flavour or fun, CleanCo might just be the game-changer you’ve been searching for.
Behind Every CleanCo Bottle

”CleanCo is not anti-alcohol; they believe that everyone’s relationship with alcohol is personal and that what works for one person may not work for another. Their mission is to provide uncompromised choices so that you’ll always have a nonalcoholic option available that’s just as enjoyable as the original.

And just one cheeky request from me –could we please have some CleanCo Wine and Prosecco?
Raft of accolades for The King’s School in Macclesfield
A range of accolades and awards have been given to The King’s School in Macclesfield, reflecting both the school’s academic and sporting achievements.
The School’s academic results have seen a significant year-on-year improvement and this was recognised nationally when King’s was listed in The Sunday Times Top 10 Inde pendent Schools in the North West for academic results. The Parent Power Guide 2024 put King’s amongst the very best per forming schools in the region. In 2024, a remarkable 50% of all GCSE grades were A*/A (9-7).
The co-ed independent school in Macclesfield was the first school in the country to be awarded a Gold Award for the quality of pupil learning. The award was the culmination of eight years of work with 'The Learning Organisation’ (TLO) to embed teaching methods that enhance pupils'
reasoning, resilience and questioning skills. Deputy Head, Mr Griffiths, said: "Our ethos is to prepare young people for life beyond their formal education. The aim is to improve the pupils' independent learning, ensuring they think and discover for themselves, and therefore develop skills that will serve them throughout the rest of their lives."
The School was also a national finalist in the 2024 ‘Independent Schools of the Year Awards.’ It was the third time that King’s has been shortlisted in the last three years, and the second time making it to the finals.
So far, the school has been nominated in the categories of ‘Pupil Wellbeing’, ‘Educa tional Innovation’ and ‘Sporting Achievement’ from over 2,000 schools na tionwide.
King’s has just been named in the Top 200 Sports Schools in the UK, in the league table published by School Sport Magazine. This
year, King’s is ranked 31, up from 66 last year, and one of the top 2 in the North West for achievements across all sporting disciplines. The ranking includes both independent and state schools and is based on performance in national competitions in all sports. During 2024, King's pupils claimed national acco lades in several different sports: U14 rugby; U14 netball; national trampoline finals; dressage (equestrian championships) and cricket. Head, Mr Slack, explained: “Central to our success was not just the level of achievement at elite level, but also the breadth and inclusivity of our participation."

Withington Girls’ School is celebrating being named Independent School of the Year for Academic Excellence in the Northwest in the prestigious Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2025. It is the sixth consecutive year the school has received an award from The Sunday Times, including being named Northwest Independent Secondary School of the Decade in the 2021 edition of the Schools Guide.

WGS is ranked 25th of all independent schools in the UK.
Pupils Take The Lead in Inspiring CHS Podcast Series
Recently, Cheadle Hulme School has welcomed a number of alumni (Old Waconians) and guest speakers to appear on the School’s Ed. Podcast, sharing insights not only into careers but also into school life, personal growth and life beyond the school gates for our current pupils.
Unlike traditional career talks, the Ed. Podcast allows for Waconians to take the lead, conducting the interviews, asking the questions and delving into the topics they find most relevant. Podcast episodes cover a wide range of topics, from career advice and navigating life after CHS, giving advice to pupils, to reflections on School memories and personal growth.
Year 11 pupil and podcast co-host Julia says: “I absolutely love hosting podcast episodes at school. It’s such a great chance for me to chat in front of an audience, step out of my comfort zone, and connect with
inspiring guests and Old Waconians!”
Co-host Frankie adds to this: “I enjoy hosting the podcast because I get to talk to so many different people about doing what they love. It’s interesting and also useful to see the vast spread of career choices that are out there!”

AI, Research, and Resilience: How Schools Can Prepare Pupils for Today’s Challenges
Preparing pupils with the skills and knowl edge for the demands of life and work has never been more important for schools. While a core role of education is to instil a love of learning and confidence in solving problems, it would be reticent to ignore some vital skills that can help people succeed.
That is why a bespoke series of lessons has been launched at St Bede's to foster and instil these skills in pupils. Taught across all year groups, from Year 7 to Sixth Form, pupils learn independent research skills, project management, presentation, and oracy techniques. At each stage, pupils are encouraged to participate in critical self-reflection, instilling ownership and re sponsibility.
Woven into the program is another vitally important knowledge for pupils: the re sponsible and acceptable use of artificial
intelligence. Rather than shy away from the use of AI, pupils are taught about the ethical integration of AI in their assignments, which does not replace effort, and given the skills to spot when AI has been used in the work of others. The empowering of pupils means there is no clandestine use of AI; they are clear on which pieces of work it is acceptable to use and how to do so re sponsibly.
While the purpose of the weekly sessions is to enable pupils to discover the joy of in dependent learning, take responsibility for their study and learn new skills, rather than an additional qualification, pupils in Year 10 and Lower Sixth do put their learning into action and complete an exter nally accredited project qualification. Along with internal projects in other year groups this is a fantastic way for pupils to showcase their learning in a field of per sonal interest to them.
as well as guest speakers from areas such as elite sports and entrepreneurship. The Ed. Podcast is a reflection of CHS’s mission to foster a supportive, interconnected community, giving Waconians the chance to hear from people who were once in their shoes.

From ethical AI use to project qualifications, St Bede's equips pupils with real-world skills to thrive in a fast-changing world.

Stockport Grammar is ‘Educational Gold’
Stockport Grammar School has been named as one of the Top 10 Independent Schools in the Northwest by the Sunday Times and has been ranked ninth in the area.
The ranking follows an amazing collection of results over the summer. At A Level more than 48% of grades were at A* and A, and 90% at A* to C. At GCSE 23% of grades were at the highest grade of 9, and over 63% were at 9, 8 and 7.
The news comes in tandem with the most recent Good Schools Guide review. The re view studied all aspects of SGS school life from the curriculum to sports and drama.
An excerpt from the report described the school as ‘Educational Gold’ while going on to describe the school as: “a down-to-earth place with high aspirations for its pupils, a great extracurricular offer, a genuine family atmosphere, and very committed, caring staff from the head down.”
The Music Department caters for both the enthusiastic amateur and those more deeply committed to instrumental or vocal pursuits. Alongside a diverse array of dynamic performance opportunities beyond the classroom, highly qualified teaching staff deliver an engaging and challenging range of academic courses. In the Lower School, the music curriculum combines hands-on practical activities, such as steel pans, samba, ukulele, and keyboards, with theoretical learning, listening exercises, and cultural awareness. This foundation allows pupils to develop their musical vocabulary and composition skills, supported by the use of specialist software. For those continuing with the study of Music in Year 9 and beyond, these
Speaking about both results the Head, Mrs Sarah Capewell, commented: “Receiving such positive judgements from two such high-profile sources in the same week is wonderful to see. Our place in the Sunday Times Top 10 Independent Schools in the
Northwest is a welcome recognition of the hard work of our pupils and staff to achieve such impressive exam results. However, the value of SGS is based on more than exam results and the review in the Good Schools Guide has encapsulated that beautifully.”
Music at The Manchester Grammar School is an Integral Part Of School Life, Fostering Enjoyment, Stimulation, and Productivity for all Pupils
areas are explored in greater depth, further enhancing their musical abilities.
Sixth Form students studying Music benefit from opportunities to perform, compose, and analyse a variety of musical styles and traditions. We are proud of our strong record of preparing pupils for further study at leading conservatoires and universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, often with choral, organ, or instrumental scholarships.
Beyond academics, all pupils have access to an extensive and vibrant cocurricular programme featuring choirs, or chestras, bands, ensembles, and musical theatre.
Pupils also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument with one of our 24 Visiting Music Teachers, take ABRSM exams on-site, and attend additional music theory classes. Recently, our pupils showcased their musical and dramatic talents in a collaborative production of Les Misérables.
Pupils from The Manchester Grammar School, Manchester High School for Girls, and Withington Girls’ School came together for this ambitious production, which fea tured participants from year 4 to year 13. Staged over three evenings in the MGS Cryne Theatre, each performance ran for nearly three hours and demonstrated exceptional dedication, skill, and perseverance.
Throughout the year, pupils from year 3 to year 13 also have opportunities to perform in a variety of events, including Junior School Teatime Concerts, Senior School and Sixth Form recital competitions, outreach concerts with local primary and secondary schools, seasonal music concerts, and the annual Music Festival. Music is an enriching and central aspect of life at The Manchester Grammar School, offering every pupil the chance to participate, excel, and enjoy.

MOST EXPENSIVEST
I’ve blatantly stolen this headline from the rapper 2 Chainz, who made four seasons of his reality TV show of the same name, looking at how the 1% spend their money. I couldn’t resist borrowing the idea, because I know there are quite a few of you out there who can afford this stuff, and for the rest of us, it does make quite interesting reading.
Here’s a look at some of the most expensive tech we could lay hands on.
Bang & Olufsen TV
According to Google, you can get a TV set that costs £2 million, but that’s mainly down to the thick crust of gold and diamonds all over it, so I don’t think that counts. In terms of paying for actual top-end tech, Bang & Olufsen’s Beovision Harmony 88” TV is relatively accessible at under £50k, and as you’d expect it’s a refined and tasteful centrepiece with genuine quality design, sound and vision for the price. £47,340.
iPhone 16 Pro Max
Anyone can hammer a load of diamonds into the back of a handset and say it’s worth millions. Many do, but that’s not the point here. For pure features and functions, the pinnacle in 2025 is the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max, with Ceramic Shield and titanium on the outside, and Apple Intelligence on the inside. The 1TB model is £1,599.
Sennheiser headphones
Anyone who fancied themselves as a DJ in the 90s knew that Sennheiser headphones were industry standard. And the popular models were within reach – I think I paid not much over £100 for mine, and they’re still going today. But don’t confuse those with the mighty HE-1 Orpheus system, which you wouldn’t use on the decks at a house party. Sennheiser’s last word in high-fidelity audio technology is more like £59,900.
Transrotor record player
Vinyl never went away because music lovers and audiophiles alike know that analogue inputs will always sound better than digital. Start spending money and you start the discussion about belt drive versus direct, then heavyweight chassis and platters for better resonance control and vibration reduction. Then at the top end, there’s the Transrotor Metropolis FMD which… well, just look at it. Approx £180,000.
La
Marzocco
espresso machine
A baby version of the ones you see in high-end hotels and coffee shops, the GS3-MP is a lovely mechanical paddle espresso machine that wouldn’t be out of place in a boutique bistro, but it’s actually being marketed to high-end consumers for the kitchen at home. The starting price of £6,863 is just the beginning, as you can customise just about every part of it with luxury glass, wood and powder coating.

EXTREME CAMPING OutdOors
At the time of writing, we’re having a lovely cold snap. As a camping fanatic, this delights me because I’m off up to Northern Scotland (in Braemar tonight it’s minus 16) for a spot of snow camping in the mountains.
As far as extreme adventures go, this one’s not to be taken lightly, but as long as you have the right kit, support, skills and preparation it’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors.
First of all, if you have a shopping addiction, then winter outdoor sports are for you. The list of essentials you need just to survive a night out there is long, but thankfully the North West is not short of brilliant independent retailers like Ellis Brigham that can advise and equip you. A sleeping bag that can handle deep cold, plus crampons and ice axes, a four-season tent, and merino and down clothing head to toe, are the very least of your requirements. The preparation alone is half the fun.
With regard to location, technically, wild camping is illegal on this side of the Scottish border, but there are ways around this. You can camp with the landowner’s permission, plus a bit of
research can uncover official and semi-wild campsites that are open all through winter.
The next thing to think about is whether or not you’ll have access to firewood. In the mountains, the answer is likely no, which means once your shelter is up, you’ll very quickly need to get bedded down to stay warm. Given how early the sun sets in winter, that means a long night in your nest – but once you’re zipped in and comfy, that’s the whole point. Come equipped with an audiobook or enjoy some meditative tranquillity. You’ll be surprised how well you’ll sleep.
There are lots of tricks for staying warm. As well as the obvious layers of clothing and bedding, a top-end sleeping mat like the ThermaRest NeoAir XTherm will do an amazing job of insulating you from the frozen ground (protecting you from conduction heat loss), while a cheap
reflective foil blanket draped over your thick bedding will help protect you from radiation heat loss.
You’ll also be a lot warmer if you have access to hot food and drinks with plenty of calories. A lightweight cooking system like a Jetboil will be able to heat enough water for regular hot drinks and instant meals such as the surprisingly tasty range from Firepot. Any activity that requires eating and drinking as much as you can is a win for me.
Most importantly, safety. If anything goes wrong, there’s no doubt the risks are as high as any high-octane adrenaline sport. Your best protection against hypothermia is, quite simply, other people. Even professional mountain guides wouldn’t recommend going out there alone – but with the support of a team, you’ll always have backup in case someone’s kit fails or there’s an injury.
Weather conditions and day-to-day life mean this sort of undertaking isn’t an everyday thing. But judging by how many millions watch the likes of TA Outdoors on YouTube, clearly, the urge to get out there is within a lot of us.

KING OF THE WILD FRONTERA
If you’re old enough to recognise the Davy Crockett / Adam Ant pun in the headline, you’ll certainly remember the Vauxhall Frontera, the early SUV that first came out in 1991. Those of us who were just getting into cars in the 90s might have dreamt of the short wheelbase Frontera Sport, which with its lairy col ours and graphics and cool rugged bodykits looked youthful and adventurous, even if in reality it was more likely we’d be learning to drive in a more modest Nova or Corsa.
As one of those middle-aged men, I’m a huge fan of the car magazine Classic.Retro.Modern, whose latest issue brought to my attention a brand new version of the Frontera. You wouldn’t ex pect a classic car mag to be too interested in new releases, but they seem to have raised an eyebrow at this car for the same reasons as I did.
First of all, nostalgia. The original Frontera was simple and cheap, with thoughtful styling that elevated it above some of the other more agricultural-looking affordable off-roaders of the time. It was a trendsetter too. Lifestyle SUVs are everywhere now, but the aforementioned Frontera Sport pioneered the concept of a twodoor off-road convertible couple more than three decades ago!
Another reason to love it is the price point. I’ve said it before: there’s a special skill to designing and producing a good car while staying below a tight price threshold. Making it interesting, desir able and cool - while safe, efficient and reliable – is a unique set of challenges when money is an object. I’d take those steel wheels over alloys any day, they look the business.
The 2025 reborn Frontera has the same no-nonsense robustness as the original, but the technology is bang up to date. This time around it’s available with either a fully electric or hybrid powertrain, with 2020s interior touches such as two 10-inch widescreens in the cockpit and the option of fully sustainable recycled materials for the upholstery.
Intended to fit into the Vauxhall range between the Mokka and the Grandland models in terms of size, but significantly cheaper than either, the new Frontera is expected to be a big seller not least thanks to its frankly amazing starting price of just £23,495. That’s up to £10,000 less than some of its competitors in the same segment.
