Are you ready for some brilliant bowling and batting action in the sunshine? The cricket season in the United Kingdom is still some months away, but the Women’s T20 World Cup began yesterday (10 February) in summery South Africa!

Ten teams will be competing for the trophy and the right to call themselves the best Women’s T20 side in the world. The tournament opened in Cape Town, with the host nation facing Sri Lanka. Today, England and the West Indies meet in Paarl, while defending champions Australia have their New Zealand tomorrow. For the match umpires will be women.

T20 action is fast and furious. With only 20 overs in an innings, batters are tempted to hit for sixes and bowlers can bag more wickets. The top batswomen from Australia will have to face googlies, sliders and ippers from the world’s best spin bowlers. Ranked number one, England’s bowler Sophie Ecclestone is known for her accuracy and economy. South Africa’s top players will also hope to shine in front of a home crowd.

You can watch all the action live on Sky Sports. Find out whether the wickets will favour the ball or bat. Either way, there’ll be loads of exciting cricket on show as international stars battle it out under

What Will You Choose?

R

ecently, I was talking to a friend who wasn’t sure if God is real. Like many people, they wondered why a good God would allow bad things to happen. We ended up having a good chat and spoke about the story in this week’s Bible cartoon.

In the beginning when God made the world it was perfect. The rst two humans, Adam and Eve, had everything they needed. But God gave them one important instruction: they could eat anything they wanted except the fruit from the tree that gave knowledge of good and evil. He even warned them what would happen if they did eat it. Sadly, when the sneaky serpent came along, Adam and Eve chose not to trust God and ate the forbidden fruit.

Since then the world hasn’t been the same. Sin, which describes the choices we make when we break God’s rules, has led to many issues, including bullying, racism, war and the causes of climate change. These were not a part of God’s original plan. He wanted us to care for the earth and to look after one another.

Thankfully, God has sent us help through Jesus. When we become his friend, Jesus helps us to make choices that please God and show love to others. As I said to my friend during our chat, God doesn’t force us to do anything. He loves us so much, he wants us to decide if we’ll accept his love. So, readers, will you choose to love God too?

Trusty Tree

The words on the fruits and leaves are anagrams of an instruction Jesus gave to his disciples. Rearrange the letters and put the words in the right order to reveal what he said.

Clue: John 14:15.

My Identity in Jesus Jesus

Did you know that when you become friends with Jesus he gives you a new identity? You’re a member of God’s Kingdom and with the help of the Holy Spirit, you now have the power to follow Jesus’ way of living.

I Am… God’s Workmanship

n Ephesians 2:10, we’re described as being God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. You have been skilfully and carefully created by God. Through Jesus, God offers the gift of a new way of life. Everyone who receives this gift is able to do good works.

Good works are anything you do that expresses your love for Jesus and shows your appreciation for his gift of forgiveness. They’re acts of kindness that show others how wonderful God is and how much he loves them too. The more you allow God’s light to shine through you, the more others will see you as God’s awesome creation.

Every day this week, tell yourself ‘I am God’s workmanship’. This will help God’s truth stay in your heart. Use the chart below to help remind you and tick each day once you’re done.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

Light Years

We use light years to measure how far stars are from our planet. A light year is the distance light travels from an object in space to Earth in one year. One light year is about nine trillion kilometres!

Light travels at a speed of 300,000 km per second. This seems super-fast but objects in space are so far away it takes a long time for their light to reach us. The Sun is about 150 million kilometres away. So, the Sun’s light takes about 8.3 light minutes to reach us. The next closest star to us is about 4.3 light years away. Some stars are thousands of light years away!

The Women’s T20 World Cup is taking place in South Africa, so we thought you might like to discover some fun facts about the host nation. Here’s a fact le with some colourings and quiz questions to enjoy…

South Africans call themselves the rainbow nation. It’s a phrase that was created by the country’s rst black African bishop, Desmond Tutu. He used it to describe unity between racial groups after apartheid ended in 1994. Apartheid was an unjust law that divided different races.

Share the Love

Love is in the air this week, because 14 February is Valentine’s Day. It’s a day when people give cards or gifts to people they love. Often, gifts are given to husbands, wives, boyfriends or girlfriends, but it doesn’t have to be just those people. Sharing love with parents, carers, siblings, grandparents, friends or anyone else is great too. It helps people know how much we care about them.

If you’d like to show someone you love them, it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or any money at all. A homemade card will show how much you care and so will baking someone some treats. Or simply telling a person how important they are to you is sure to make them smile.

Guess what? There’s another event happening this week that’s about making people happy. International Book Giving Day is a day that does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s a day to give books to others! It happens every year on 14 February and it’s all about making sure all kids have access to books.

A 2017 study from the National Literacy Trust said that one in eight children don’t own a single book. So if you’re fortunate enough to own plenty, you could share some with others.

Have a look through your books at home. Are there any you think other kids would like to read? You could leave one somewhere with a note for a stranger to nd – make sure it’s somewhere dry so it doesn’t get ruined! Or donate some of your books to a library or charity. You could also simply grab one of your favourite stories and pass

Spread Kindness

If those two days weren’t enough, Random Acts of Kindness Day (RAOKD) will take place on 17 February. What a week! This day was started by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation as a way to encourage people to spread kindness at home, school, work or in their community. Write a letter to someone telling them how great they are.

There are loads of ways to share kindness this RAOKD. Here are some ideas to get you started…

Paint some rocks with positive messages and leave them in places for others to nd.

Pick up litter in your local park or high street to make it cleaner for everyone to enjoy.

Make a sandwich for your sibling. Make your parents or carers a drink.

Donate to a food bank or give old toys and clothes to a charity shop.

Create some bookmarks with kind messages and hide them in books at the library for others to

Bake cupcakes to drop off at your local re station or hospital.

Get together with your Sunday school friends or classmates and make pictures to give to residents of an elderly care home. Or ask your leaders or teachers if you can arrange a visit to a care home to talk to residents.

Make a special effort not to leave lights on or water running to be kind to the planet. Ask someone new to sit with you at lunchtime at school.

Cook a meal with your parents or carers to deliver to someone else.

Tell someone a joke to make them smile.
