Light Years

We use light years to measure how far stars are from our planet. A light year is the distance light travels from an object in space to Earth in one year. One light year is about nine trillion kilometres!

Light travels at a speed of 300,000 km per second. This seems super-fast but objects in space are so far away it takes a long time for their light to reach us. The Sun is about 150 million kilometres away. So, the Sun’s light takes about 8.3 light minutes to reach us. The next closest star to us is about 4.3 light years away. Some stars are thousands of light years away!

What sport do insects love to watch? Cricket!
