Republic
Ireland,

For two weeks each year, thousands of schools, colleges, universities and communities come together to learn about people who grow and produce our food and drink, and cotton for our clothes. That’s because it’s Fairtrade Fortnight, which is happening from Monday 27 February to Sunday 12 March. This year, Fairtrade Fortnight has a simple message – making the small switch to Fairtrade helps producers protect the future of some of our most-loved food and our planet. Choosing Fairtrade products means extra income, power and support for people who grow the things we eat, drink and wear. This helps them to take better care of themselves and the planet. There are loads of ways to get involved. First, buy Fairtrade products whenever you can. Also, from 28 February to 2 March there will be a pop-up exhibition called the Endangered Aisle in Shoreditch, London. There visitors can discover what supermarket favourites are most at risk from climate change.

There will also be free online Big Fairtrade Get Togethers. During these online events, people can hear from Fairtrade farmers and other experts about how to save the future of our fave foods.

To help spread the word about the importance of Fairtrade, you, your family, church or school could also organise an event. Whether it’s a coffee morning, quiz night, assembly or bake sale, there are plenty of ways to tell people about the importance of Fairtrade.

Recently, I rewatched Stone

Choose to Obey

This week’s Bible story features a rm favourite among Kids Alive! readers – Noah’s ark! Noah’s story is pretty incredible. Not only does he save lots of animals, but Noah shows what it truly means to be obedient to God.

By Noah’s time, the perfect world that God created was ruined. Everyone was making wrong choices, doing bad things and hurting each other. Everyone that is except Noah. Despite what he saw others doing, Noah made the choice to follow God.

So when God told him to build an ark, Noah didn’t hesitate. He built it just like God said. In fact, everything God told Noah to do, he did. There was no grumbling or moaning. Noah simply obeyed.

But can you imagine how Noah might have felt being the odd one out? Or how many times he had to explain why he was building an ark? Then there was the ood itself – locked in a boat with lots of animals for days on end. Whew! I can only imagine the noise … and smell! But despite how dif cult or embarrassing doing everything God asked was, Noah still obeyed.

In the end, Noah’s obedience and offering helped remind God of his deep love for creation. God promised never to ood the earth again, and as a sign, made the rainbow as a reminder for all time.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve learnt that the choices we make are important. Will you be like Noah and choose to follow God?

My Identity in Jesus My Identity in Jesus Identity

Did you know that when you become friends with Jesus he gives you a new identity? You’re a member of God’s Kingdom and with the help of the Holy Spirit, you now have the power to follow Jesus’ way of living.

I Am… VICTORIOUS

esus has won the ultimate victory over our spiritual enemy and he has made you victorious too. If you continue to trust Jesus and believe the promises God has made in the Bible, you’ll live a life of victory.

Challenges are a part of life and it’s easy to become discouraged when things aren’t going the way we hoped. But in Ephesians 6:10–18, the apostle Paul tells us to, ‘Put on the full armour of God’. This includes the shield of faith, the sword of the Spirit and the helmet of salvation. They protect us from doubt and fear, while giving us the courage to stay focused on God’s good plan for our lives.

Every day this week, tell yourself ‘I am victorious’. This will help God’s truth stay in your heart. Use the chart below to help remind you and tick each day once you’re done.

i’VE GRABBED SOME FAIRTRADE TREATS TO CELEBRATE FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT. See if you can spot this version of me on ANOTHER PAGE IN THIS WEEK’S ISSUE.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Our solar system is made up of the Sun and all the smaller objects that orbit (move around) it. These include eight major planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. There are also dwarf planets, such as Pluto, dozens of moons and millions of asteroids and comets.

Mercury is the closest major planet to the Sun and Neptune the most distant. Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only place in the universe known to support life. Our solar system orbits round the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. It takes about 230 million years to complete one orbit around the galaxy’s centre!

Time To Be Fair

If you’ve read page 3 you’ll already know that Fairtrade Fortnight begins on Monday 27 February. If you haven’t read it yet, ip back now and check out the ways you can get involved. Then pop back here so we can tell you more about why Fairtrade is so important.

Did you know that coffee, bananas and chocolate could soon be much more dif cult to nd on our shelves?

Climate change is making crops like these harder to grow. Climate change describes the situation of earth’s temperature getting warmer. That might sound nice, but it actually causes a lot of problems, such as oods, storms and rising sea levels.

Many of our favourite foods are produced in areas, such as Central America, East Africa and the Caribbean. This is because in the UK we don’t have the right weather to grow some things. If climate change continues, these areas are likely to experience more extreme weather, which will affect the way farmers are able to grow their crops.

Added to this, farmers growing these products are often underpaid. If they don’t receive a fair price for what they grow, these workers will struggle to afford everything they need for themselves and their families. Especially with rising costs for things such as fuel and fertiliser. Without fairer prices and support, farmers will nd it even harder to tackle the climate change challenges.

If a product has the Fairtrade symbol on it, this means that the farmer and workers who produced it received a fair price for their work. It also means they have safe working conditions and are able to invest in climate-friendly farming techniques.

Making a switch to Fairtrade helps farmers to protect the future of some of our most-loved food, as well as helping the planet.

This is what the Fairtrade symbol looks like so you can look out for it when you next go to the shops.

A Fair Price

A Fair List

There are loads of items that are part of the Fairtrade system. Here are some of them…

Meet Emilia

This is Emilia Debrah. She’s a Fairtrade cocoa farmer from Ghana. Before 2018, Emilia’s income was so low that she ended up in debt and struggled badly. Her situation was turned around when she got help from Fairtrade. She has learnt how to farm her land more productively to provide more for herself and the six grandchildren that she cares for.

The Price Difference

We can all do our bit to try to help struggling farmers, such as Emilia. The difference in price for some products is very small. For example, Asda’s Fairtrade bananas are only 6p more expensive than the non-Fairtrade ones. Lidl also sell a Fairtrade Choco Rice cereal that is just £1.05. That’s almost a third of the price of Kellogg’s Coco Pops. So Fairtrade isn’t always more expensive.

Spread the Word

You can also help farmers and workers by spreading the word about Fairtrade products. Tell your friends and family about the issues farmers are facing or make a poster to put up at school or church. You could even send anything you create to us at kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk and we’ll publish it in a future issue. You can also ask your teachers to look into your school receiving some Fairtrade awards. There is more information about that at schools.fairtrade.org.uk

It might nearly be the end of February, but we still loved receiving this Happy New Year Colouring from Tiana, age 9. We hope your 2023 is just as bright as your colouring.

Musical Theatre Day

Scarlett, age 9, completed this colouring of Ebinehita Iyere to celebrate Black History Month. Really neat colouring, Scarlett, especially those little letters!

The Music and Creative Arts Musical Theatre Day is being held for the fourth time on Saturday 29 April. It will be taking place in the heart of London’s West End, at Regent Hall Salvation Army on Oxford Street. So if you’re a child aged between 7 and 17 and want to learn songs and routines from hit West End shows, as well as Salvation Army musicals, this is the event for you! It’s also a fab opportunity to make new friends and learn more about God. There is even a performance for family and friends at the end of the day. You don’t have to attend The Salvation Army to be involved in the fun, so it’s a perfect event to invite your friends to! Find out more about the day at salvationist.org.uk/events/musical-theatre-day.
