THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Our solar system is made up of the Sun and all the smaller objects that orbit (move around) it. These include eight major planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. There are also dwarf planets, such as Pluto, dozens of moons and millions of asteroids and comets.

Mercury is the closest major planet to the Sun and Neptune the most distant. Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only place in the universe known to support life. Our solar system orbits round the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. It takes about 230 million years to complete one orbit around the galaxy’s centre!
