I love a bit of history. I enjoy learning facts and hearing stories from the past – especially the history of my hometown (Plymouth), my football team (Plymouth Argyle) and my church (The Salvation Army).

A re you ready for a bit of time travel? Throughout September you’re invited to do just that … well … kind of. All you need is a place to visit and your imagination!

With the help of Heritage Open Days (9–18 September in England), you can discover what life was like in times gone by. The theme of this year’s festival is Astounding Inventions –a celebration of cutting-edge creations and the imaginative inventors that have helped to make life easier. From Tilehurst Bell Ringing in Reading to the British Lawnmower Museum in Southport and a visit to the Grand Union Canal at Great Lindford Park in Milton Keynes, there’s plenty to visit, see and do. In Scotland, the year-round Doors Open Days moves into September with churches, castles, gardens and lighthouses throwing their doors open to visitors. Fancy a go at curling? Then check into Dumfries Curling Club on 3 and 4 September. Fancy an insight into being a Second World War radar reader? A trip to the Emergency Operation Bunker in Inverness could be for you. Or you could learn about hydropower at Donside Hydro in Aberdeen. If you live in Wales, keep your eyes peeled for Open Doors events, including Willow Weaving at Laugharne Castle and a Living History Weekend at Chepstow Castle. And in Northern Ireland you can join in European Heritage Open Days events which take place on 10 and 11 September.

My very favourite history is the Bible. I love reading about Jesus and the things he did. His story is sometimes described as the greatest story ever told. As you open the doors of history this week, grab a Bible and check out the stories of Jesus. They’re amazing!

One type of history I really like is family history. Learning about the things my parents and grandparents got up to is really interesting. For example, my dad was born in India, because my grandad served as a soldier there. After around 20 years in India, when my dad’s family was sailing back to the UK their ship got hit by a torpedo! And they survived! Amazing!

Glorious Gifts says Ibukun Baku

The Holy Spirit

Below is a list of the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives. But a strong wind has blown some vowels off the page. Fill in the gaps with vowels to complete the words. Clue: 1 Corinthians 12: 8–10 (International Children’s Bible).

Afew months ago, I joined a local church and the first Bible story I heard being taught was the very one on the opposite page – the arrival of the Holy Spirit. As I listened it became clear just how special the Holy Spirit is and the difference he makes in the life of every believer.Youmay be wondering, ‘But who is the Holy Spirit?’ Well, simply put, he’s a special helper. Jesus promised the disciples that God would send a helper who would be with them for ever. You see, when we decide to become Jesus’ friend, we need a special kind of help – that gives us the power to love God and others the way Jesus teaches us to. That special power comes from the Holy Spirit who helps us to do this and much more! In the Bible cartoon, we see that when the Holy Spirit filled the disciples, they were completely transformed. Not only did they have a new-found courage to tell others about Jesus, but the Holy Spirit gave them the gift to speak in languages they had never spoken before! And because of this incredible gift, 3,000 people had the opportunity to hear about Jesus and chose to become his friends. The Holy Spirit’s power is still available for everyone today. Would you like him to help you be more like Jesus? Why not pray with your parents, carers or Sunday school leaders and ask for the Holy Spirit to fill you up too?

Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

International Day of Charity is important because it reminds us to give back. It’s easy to go about our daily lives and forget about people who need more help than others. Charities rely on donations or fundraisers so that they can help people. That doesn’t Big charities like these are what most people think of when you say the word charity. However, did you know that these big organisations make up just a tiny number of the charities in the UK? Just four per cent of charities, in fact! That means that 96 per cent of charities in the UK are smaller. These smaller charities need just as much, if not more, help from the public to keep helping people.

There are about 170,000 charities operating in the UK. These includes huge organisations, such as Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and The Salvation Army (who publish Kids Alive!).

Little and Large Give Back and Get Involved

Monday 5 September is International Day of Charity.

International Day of Charity

It’s a United Nations day that highlights the important work that charities do around the world.

What’s your favourite food or drink? Could you give them up for a month or more? Your family could donate the money saved to charity or ask people to sponsor you to give up your fave thing. You could even give up your favourite tech, such as your tablet or computer console! Give It Up

Do you like making things and being creative? Why not make some paintings or jewellery to sell? Then you can donate the money to your chosen charity. Get Crafty 13 You can raise even more money (and let everyone know about your favourite charity) by getting a group fundraiser going. Talk to your parents or carers about organising something such as a concert at church, a community car wash, a non-uniform day at school or a fashion show. Group Effort

Ready,Bake!Set, Charity to help charities. Here are some ideas…

Charity fun runs happen all over the UK. See if there’s one happening near you that you can join. You could also plan your own run and ask people to sponsor you for completing it.

Some people do incredible challenges for charity. You won’t be able to sign up for anything as extreme as a skydive or mountain trek, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something. Whether it’s cycling further than you’ve ever done before or facing your fear of heights by abseiling, there’s sure to be something to challenge you. Bake some cakes and sell them to raise money for a charity.

The Big Collection is a fundraising appeal run by Salvation Army members, friends and volunteers, and it happens every September. Every penny helps people who are vulnerable or in need in the UK. Some Salvation Army members might be collecting money on high streets or in shopping centres, but others may be holding events to raise funds too. You can also ask your parents or carers to donate to the Big Collection online. Visit salvationarmy.org.uk/big-collection for more information.

As well as running, you could try other sponsored events. A sponsored silence, read, dance, sing and swim are all great ideas. Get Sponsored
