Have you ‘herd’ about Open Farm Sunday? It’s farming’s annual open day – when they invite visitors in to learn more about farming and the countryside. This year events are taking place on Sunday 11 June and it’s the perfect opportunity to learn more about where the food we eat comes from and how farming affects our everyday lives. Each farm can run the day as they like, so there are loads of different activities for families to enjoy. There could be machinery displays, animal interactions, tractor and trailer rides, nature walks and much more! Some farms also have farm shops where your family can grab some delicious food or drink to take home.
You can nd a farm that’s taking part in Open Farm Sunday by visiting farmsunday.org. Click on ‘Visit a Farm’ and start planning your adventures. If you can’t make it to a farm this weekend, the website also has virtual farm visits – videos that give a fascinating insight into the world of farming. There are also family activities and resources to download. Have a baa-rilliant time exploring farming!
Turn to pages 12 and 13 to read about Great Big Green Week and what The Salvation Army is doing to help farmers in Malawi
I know very little about farming. That’s why Open Farm Sunday is so important – it helps us to understand what farmers do to grow crops that are used for food, drink and other things.
I think Jesus knew lots about farming. Well, he knew enough to tell a farming-based story known as the Parable of the Sower (you can read it in Luke 8:4–15 or Matthew 13:1–23). Jesus told this story to help people understand how important it is to listen to God and live the way he knows is best.
Just as plants need the right conditions to become healthy and useful, people need just the right conditions to live their best lives. When we listen to God and do our very best to live his way, we become the best possible version of ourselves. Then we can help others listen to and understand God, and help them to live their best lives too.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT FORGIVENESS
Step Up and Say Sorry
If you haven’t read the last few weeks of Kids Alive! let me ll you in. Jacob was naughty and stole his father’s blessing. Then he ran away because his brother Esau was big, scary and very angry! He ended up with his Uncle Laban and was tricked into marrying two women. (We know, it seems strange nowadays to have two wives, but it was normal back in those days!) Jacob’s life is a story full of struggles, some of which Jacob created himself.
In this week’s cartoon Jacob is heading back to Esau and he’s scared. I would be too! Jacob even sends a message and gifts ahead of him to try to get in Esau’s good books.
I’ve never stolen a blessing from my siblings, but there have de nitely been times when I’ve done something wrong, and had to apologise and ask for forgiveness. How about you? We all make mistakes and do things that are wrong. That’s when we have to step up and say sorry, even if it’s scary!
Thankfully there’s someone who can help us when we face struggles and make mistakes. God was with Jacob through all his struggles and was also there to help him make up with his brother. It’s the same for you – God is with you through all the struggles and mistakes of your life. Talk to him and trust him to help you.

In the Bible there are incredible stories of young people choosing to trust God. In return, God used them to do extraordinary things. As you read about these young people, be inspired because Jesus is calling you to make a difference too.
Samuel
What Happened?
Samuel was an apprentice to Eli the priest, but at that time receiving a message from God was rare. However, one night, Samuel heard someone calling his name. He thought it was Eli and went to him, but it wasn’t. This happened three times until Eli realised it was God calling Samuel. So, Eli told him what to do. When Samuel heard his name again, he replied, ‘Speak Lord, for your servant is listening’. From that time God spoke to Samuel and he became a great prophet in Israel.
What Can We Learn?
Eli was older and more experienced, but God chose to speak to Samuel. God wanted someone who would listen carefully and do exactly as he asked. Even though Samuel was young, he courageously obeyed God.
Thoughts for You
The Bible is full of God’s messages to you. Read Matthew 7:24–27 and do your best to put what you learn into action.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!
Meteoroids, Meteors and Meteorites
What’s the difference between meteoroids, meteors and meteorites? Basically, they’re the same thing – small space rocks – but meteoroids y through space; meteors have entered a planet’s atmosphere; and meteorites have crashed on to a planet’s surface. When meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere, they burn and leave trails of glowing hot air behind them – these are known as shooting stars.
When lots of meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at one time it’s called a meteor shower. Some well-known regular meteor showers are Quadrantids, Lyrids, Perseids, Orionids, Leonids and Geminids. Most meteors are so small they burn up in Earth’s atmosphere. However, experts reckon around 44,000kg of meteorites hit Earth every day! The largest known meteorite to hit Earth is Hoba. Discovered on a farm in Namibia, Africa in 1920, it’s too big to move, but it’s thought to weigh around 54,000kg!

Great Big Green Week
This week (10–18 June) is Great Big Green Week, the United Kingdom’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.
Rising Temperatures
Earth’s average temperature has always gone up and down naturally but recently the temperature has been going up more rapidly than usual. This is known as climate change. The overall rapid rise in temperature is having a big impact on the environment – threatening biodiversity, increasing extreme weather events and damaging ecosystems.
What Can We Do?
Climate change is a result of human behaviour, for example choosing to burn fossil fuels (such as coal and oil) and cut down rainforests. If we use fewer fossil fuels and more renewable sources of energy, such as solar or wind power then carbon emissions would be reduced, and we could slow the rate of climate change.
Clean Water
This month, each issue of KA! World is focusing on The Salvation Army’s Helping-Hand Appeal and highlighting international clean water projects. The climate crisis and issues around access to water are closely connected. For more info about the Helping-Hand Appeal 2023, visit salvationist.org.uk/resources/key-dates/helping-hand-appeal-2023
Extreme weather events (which are becoming more common as a result of climate change) are making the issue of water scarcity worse. This is because these events can mean rains are less predictable and water can become polluted.
What is Water Scarcity?
Water scarcity is the lack of enough water to meet demand.
a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

What is The Salvation Army Doing?
In Malawi, The Salvation Army is working with community members on a large-scale water, sanitation and hygiene (also known as WASH) project. There are lots of elements including building toilets in schools and drilling boreholes to ensure people can be safe and healthy.
One of the project activities involves training small-scale farmers in conservation agriculture – this is a method of farming that means people can grow enough crops even when there is not enough water (because of droughts or if the rain is unpredictable).
Gladys and her husband Austen are part of the project. Gladys said...
‘I was excited to start the training. We have a rice farm but the crops were low and my family was often hungry. We could barely grow enough to feed ourselves. Now there is no hunger because we have enough crops for the whole year. We grow vegetables to sell and we can buy things that we need. I am so happy because my children no longer become sick, they can play happily.’
Great Big Green Week
Great Big Green Week is a great time to think about the things we care about that are impacted by climate change, and to tell people about it. There are a few ways to get involved. Visit greatbiggreenweek.com for more information.
What Inspires You?
Tell your family and friends at church, school or in your clubs about what inspires you to take action to tackle climate change and protect nature in your everyday life.
Are you inspired by your local woodland walk or the owers in your garden? Perhaps it’s the communities most impacted by climate change around the world (people like Gladys and her family in Malawi) that inspire you to take action.
Get creative: you could draw a picture, take a photo or write a story about what inspires you to help create a cleaner, greener future. Be sure to send us a picture!
Letters To Tomorrow
The organisers of Great Big Green Week are inviting people of all ages to write ‘letters to tomorrow’ – a letter to someone in the future (this could be a friend, your little brother or sister, or even your future self!)
Use your letter to explain your hopes for future generations if our leaders step up to protect the environment – and your fears about what life could be like if we don’t slow down climate change. Be sure to send us a picture at kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk
