Brief 6: The Designers Republic - Part One The Brief
Concept
To attend Ian Anderson’s session an initial brief was set to complete.
A series of 3 postcards celebrating Sheffield and the creativity of the city were produced. Including a personal message to Ian on the reverse thanking him for keeping his creativity in the North.
Researching me to make informed decisions produce something I (Ian Anderson) will want to keep forever. Remembering that this is a design communication and design thinking workshop.
Postcards with personal messages are items people tend to keep, and this was the reasoning behind the postcard idea.
Any explanation necessary should be done within the piece rather than within accompanying text.

Context
A series of three postcards.
Ian Anderson stayed in Sheffield after moving from London to study Philosophy at Sheffield University. He became interested in the music scene and got involved in the designing of posters, flyers, etc. This inspired his interest in design.

Brief 6 - The Designers Republic
Part One
Research Looking at The Designers Republic Designs inspired the aesthetic for the postcards. It was identified that the studio repeatedly used bright colours and geometric shapes. Research into the key buildings within Sheffield was also carried out as the postcards celebrate the creativity in the city. Buildings were selected due to interesting architecture and the potential to produce a geometric style illustration of them.

Thanks for keeping your creativity up north. Sam

Postcards The postcards used colours from previous Ian Anderson designs and the geometric illustration style is also based on some of his work. The addition of ‘Aye Up’ adds humour and a stronger reference to the Northern aspect of TDR and Ian Anderson. The postcards digitally sent to Ian included a personal message of thanks in a hand written font. The personal aspect makes the cards more likely to be kept.
