what even is foraging? Foraging is the process of searching for wild food resources. We rely so much on supermarkets and ready washed, chopped and packaged food nowadays that we forget about the wonderful edible foods that are readily available, in our woodlands and hedgerows. From plants, flowers and weeds to fungi, there are many edible species around us. However, you should never pick something unless you are 100% sure you know what it is as it can be easy to misidentify plants. Which is why our guided foraging walks are a great way to start your knowledge and are a great day out.

Jamie

Alex

Jamie is the founder of Go Wild and is a passionate forager. He loves winter berries and making dandelion soup.

Liz has been foraging in Leeds her whole life as her parents are also keen foragers. She loves to make preserves.

Alex has been foraging for around 25 years and is especially knowledgeable on identifying mushrooms.

Go Wild wants Leeds to become less reliant on buying foods and go back to basics by picking some of our own foods. Foraging can save money in addition to being incredibly good for you as you cannot get more organic than freshly picked herbs, fruits, fungi, etc. Guided walks take place in Meanwood Park, Temple Newsam Woods, Wood House Moor and Bramley Fall Woods. You can select one closest to you, or attend them all. Walks last around three hours starting at 10am at the specified meeting point. The guides will discuss what and how to pick wild foods but also explain the seasons and when to look for certain foods.

leave more than you take

preserve

Try to pick from different locations rather than stripping everything from one area or plant. Also, don’t pick anything if there is only a small amount left.

Making preserves such as jam and marmalades gives your foraged foods a much longer life, allowing you to enjoy seasonal foods all year long. Jars can be bought fairly cheaply or you can sterilise used jars.

are you sure? Unless you are 100% sure of what something is then do not pick it. Foraging can be dangerous if you pick things you are uncertain of.

careful where you pick Pick away from busy roads and if you are foraging in dog walking areas pick only from higher areas. One of the benefits of foraging for food is that there are no chemicals, so avoid picking anything that could be contaminated.

seasons Be aware of the seasons and find out what you can find through the year. Our guided foraging walks are a great way to start or build on this knowledge.

follow the rules Don’t pick on private property, unless you have permission, or in conversation areas. You are also not allowed to use foraged pickings for profitable gain. Have fun foraging but be mindful of these rules.

Walks are run weekly at the four locations. You can only purchase tickets to a walk one week in advance. If you wish to arrange a private talk from one of our guides please phone or e-mail us.

When you book a walk you will receive an information pack through the post, explaining how to prepare for your walk and including some fun foraging goodies such as paper bags to hold delicate leaves, a recipe card based on the season of your walk and a notepad to jot down foraged findings which also has a seasonal guide in the back. You will also receive a tote bag on arrival at your walk to hold your forged findings.
