Once-counterculture 420 marijuana holiday goes mainstream Potheads have for decades celebrated their love of marijuana on April 20, but the once counter-culture celebration that was all about getting stoned now is so mainstream Corporate America is starting to embrace it. No, Hallmark doesn’t yet have a card to mark “420.” But many other businesses inside and outside the multibilliondollar cannabis industry are using April 20, or 4/20, to roll out marketing and social media messaging aimed at connecting with consumers driving the booming market. On Saturday, Lyft is offering a $4.20 credit on a single ride in Colorado and in select cities in the U.S. and Canada. Carl’s Jr. is using a Denver restaurant to market a hamburger infused with CBD, a non-intoxicating molecule found in cannabis that many believe is beneficial to their health. On 420 last year, Totino’s, a maker of frozen pizza snacks, tweeted an image of a microwave and an oven with the message: “To be blunt, pizza rolls are better when baked.” “I think brands that associate themselves with cannabis kind of get that contact high. In other words, they’re just considered to be cooler by association,” s a i d K i t Ya r r o w, c o n s u m e r psychologist at Golden Gate University. “As pot becomes more legal, more discussed, more interesting to people,
more widely used, then 420 becomes more mainstream as well.”Marijuana normalization has snowballed since 2012, when Colorado and Washington were the first states to legalize recreational use. Eight more followed, including California, Oregon and Michigan. Medical marijuana is legal in two-thirds of the states, with conservativeleaning Utah and Oklahoma among recent additions. Meantime, the CBD market has exploded. CBD oil can be found in candies, coffee and other food, drinks and dietary supplements, along with perfume, lotions, creams and soap. Proponents say CBD helps with pain, anxiety and inflammation, though limited scientific research supports those claims. U.S. retail sales

This year the company is threefold increase from 2017, according to data from Arcview Group, a cannabis investment and market research firm. The Ve r m o n t - b a s e d i c e c r e a m company features Cherry Garcia and Phish Food, honoring late Grateful Dead member Jerry Garcia and the band Phish. Both bands are favorites of the marijuanasmoking crowd. To mark 420 in recent years, Ben & Jerry’s debuted taco and burrito inspired ice cream
using the holiday to call for criminal justice reform. “We’re actually using this as an opportunity not to tell a stoner joke like we have in the past, but to raise what we see as a much more serious issue around justice,” Curley said. Those in the marijuana marketplace also are ramping up advertising around 420. Much of the marketing about cannabis or related products takes the form of online ads, emails, text messages and social media. Shops typically offer discounts. Some host parties with food and entertainment. The larger 420 events can draw thousands of people.
New York Two Indian nationals have been apprehended by the patrol agents at the US-Mexico border in Arizona after they got stranded while trying to enter America illegally, authorities said. The duo, including a Sikh man, called for help using technology installed in remote locations to help people in distress. Agents assigned to the Ajo Border Patrol Station rescued the two migrants following the activation of a US Border Patrol rescue beacon Wednesday evening. They responded to the rescue beacon located approximately 14 miles northwest of the Lukeville Port of Entry in Arizona and found the two men alone in the beacon. The two men were in good health, and did not request further medical assistance, the US Customs and Border Protection said in a statement. The duo was transported back to the station for processing, where records checks revealed the men were Indian nationals who were trying to enter US illegally. The US agency said criminal
organizations often abandon migrants in the desert. As a result, many perish along the border every year. US Border Patrol has encouraged anyone in distress to call 911 or activate a rescue beacon before they become a casualty. Rescue beacons are selfcontained solar powered units placed in remote locations considered to be high risk for people in distress. Their metal trussing, approximately 35 feet in height, is equipped with a high visibility strobe light on top of the structure. Many of the towers utilize a camera system that is used to determine an appropriate response and aid in the rescue event. Eye-level at the rescue beacon is a panel with a large red button, instructions in multiple languages, and a pictogram of an individual activating the rescue beacon by hitting the button and then waiting for Border Patrol first responders to arrive. In fiscal year 2018, the United States Border Patrol apprehended people from 113 countries along the southwest border.

AF transfers Abhinandan Varthaman from Srinagar over security concerns New Delhi Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was taken prisoner by Pakistan after his MiG 21 aircraft was shot down on February 27, has been transferred out of the Srinagar airbase, a senior Defence Ministry official who did not want to be named said Saturday. “Security considerations prompted the transfer,” the officer said and added that Wing Commander Abhinandan’s home base will “be another front-line fighter base.” Security agencies have indicated that the officer could be a target of the Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)- the group that took responsibility for the February 14 Pulwama suicide attack which killed 40 troopers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) dead. The Indian Air Force, however, said that transfer to another base
is “routine.” Wing Commander Abhinandan, flying a vintage Russian-made Mig21 fighter, was part of the package of aircraft that took on the incoming Pakistan Air Force war planes on February 27. A day earlier, IAF fighters had hit a JeM training camp in Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He was taken prisoner by Pakistan after his aircraft was shot down over the Line of Control (LoC). Under pressure from India, Wing Commander Abhinandan was released by Pakistan on March 1. The fighter pilot is currently awaiting medical clearance to resume flying a combat aircraft.

Blind Japanese sailor completes non-stop Pacific voyage A blind Japanese sailor completed his non-stop Pacific voyage on Saturday, local media reported, becoming the first sightless person on record to navigate a vessel across the vast ocean. Mitsuhiro Iwamoto arrived at port in
Fukushima in his 12-metre (40-foot) sailboat on Saturday morning, around two months after he left California. Iwamoto, a 52-year-old San Diego resident, sailed from the US city on February 24 with Doug Smith, an American
navigator who verbally helped him by offering information such as wind directions. This was his second attempt after his initial voyage was cut short six years ago when his yacht hit a whale and sank. “I’m home. Thank you,”
Iwamoto told the welcoming party after his yacht sailed into Fukushima, ending a journey of some 14,000 kilometres (8,700 miles). “I didn’t give up and I made a dream come true,” Iwamoto was quoted by Japan’s Kyodo News as
saying. It was the first Pacific crossing by a blind sailor, Kyodo News said. Iwamoto, who lost his sight at the age of 16, made the voyage to raise funds for charity, including efforts to prevent blinding diseases, according to his website.

How China is defending its detention of Muslims to the world Bloomberg At the Shu Le County Education Center, a sprawling three-story complex in China’s far west region of Xinjiang, the dormitories feature bars on windows and doors that only lock from the outside. Inside are hundreds of minority Muslim Uighurs who have no way of leaving without an official escort, even though Chinese officials who took a group of foreign journalists around the “transformation through education” camp this week insisted they were there voluntarily. Asked what would happen if a Uighur refused to attend, Shu Le’s principal Mamat Ali became quiet. “If they don’t want to come, they will have to go through judicial procedures,” Ali said after a pause, adding that many stay for at least seven months. Shu Le is one of an unknown number of re-education camps in Xinjiang, a Muslim-majority region at the heart of President Xi Jinping’s Belt-and-Road Initiative to connect Asia with Europe. The U.S. State Department says as many as two million Uighurs are being held in the camps, a number disputed by Chinese officials even though they won’t disclose an official figure. This week, I participated in a government-sponsored tour along with four other foreign media
organizations through three cities in Xinjiang. The schedule was tightly controlled, with events planned from early morning to 11 p.m., and it included stops in many of the same places I visited on an unguided 10day trip to the region in November. The trip shows that Beijing is becoming more worried about an international backlash that has intensified of late, raising risks for investors already assessing the impact of a more antagonistic U.S.China relationship. Muslim-majority countries have begun joining the U.S. and European Union in condemning China’s practices, with Turkey’s foreign ministry in February calling the “concentration camps” a “great embarrassment for humanity.” Xi’s policies to pacify the local
of the stops were focused on economic development and new education initiatives. The government’s message was simple: Xi’s policies were helping pacify the region and grow the economy. The exercise reflects Xi’s increased confidence on the world stage, where he’s directly challenged Western-style democracy with a centralized model of government that uses advanced technology to reward, punish and ultimately control the behavior of its citizens. He has a lot at stake in making it work: Backing down risks population have spawned the biggest jeopardizing the Communist Party’s challenge to China’s international reputation since soldiers were sent to put down protests in Tiananmen Square three decades ago. After first denying the existence of the camps, China is now doubling down on the need for them, and beginning to defend them as a vital weapon against terrorism. “You can see the Chinese government basically changed its position over time,” said Maya Wang, a senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch. “They switched from denial to a full-frontal counter offensive.” Throughout this visit, Chinese officials said the foreign media had given a false impression of the government’s efforts in Xinjiang. Most Iwunoh Zeal Obryan, director of Ugofid UK Limited, trading as Hugofid Fashion UK based on Dudley Road in Wolverhampton, received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months for fraudulent trading. Obryan has also been disqualified from being a director for seven years and his company Ugofid UK Limited received a fine of £5,679. In addition, the court has ordered Obryan to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work. City of Wolverhampton Council’s Trading Standards team investigated Obryan after receiving a complaint from a member of the public that Hugofid Fashion UK was selling counterfeit goods. Wolverhampton Trading Standards carried out test purchases from the store and were sold a ‘Michael Kors’ belt, a ‘Louis Vuitton’ belt and a pair of ‘Nike’ trainers, which were all confirmed to be counterfeit. Further test purchasing exercise was also carried out from the trader’s websitewww.hugofidltd.co.uk . Trading Standards purchased a pair of Nike trainers and a Ted Baker bag costing £75.00. However, despite payment being made, the goods were never delivered. Over 300 fake branded items including Nike and Adidas
grip on power. I wasn’t able to speak independently with any residents on the trip, or travel around without being followed. But the group was allowed to ask questions of officials, including repeated follow ups that at times angered our hosts. The visit to Urumqi, Kashgar and Hotan stood in stark contrast to the trip I took in November. Back then, minders followed close behind, searches occurred repeatedly and officials demanded I delete photos on my mobile phone. I could only glimpse the heavily secured camps from a distance.
Wolverhampton shop owner faces prison for selling fake designer items
trainers, counterfeit designer goods by Paul & Shark, The North Face and Michael Kors, designer handbags, designer belts, sunglasses, shoes, watches, jewellery and other clothing by designers/trademark holders including Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton were all seized from Obryan’s business and home address. Paul Dosanjh, Trading Standards Service Lead at City of Wolverhampton Council said: “This was a commercial operation selling high value designer goods to the public. “Selling and supplying counterfeit items is a serious crime that not only deceives customers but also robs the public purse of much needed revenue and businesses who are trying to earn an honest living. “I hope today’s success sends out a message to those who are funding this illegal trade that we are serious about clamping down on the sale of illegal products. “I encourage anyone who knows of any counterfeit items being sold to report it, so we can work together to put a stop to this illegal trade and prosecute those who continue to break the law at the expense of others.” Iwunoh Obryan pleaded guilty to fraudulent trading in January 2019.

IAF recommends Wing Commander Abhinandan’s name for Vir Chakra medal Pakistan Air Force war planes New Delhi The India Air Force has recommended Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman for the Vir Chakra medal for shooting down an F-16 in an aerial engagement with the Pakistan Air Force on February 27. In the past, during wars, pilots who shot down enemy fighters were all given Vir Chakra medals. The Vir Chakra is the third highest gallantry award in the military during times of war after the Param Vir Chakra and the Mahavir Chakra. This comes even as the IAF fighter pilot was issued transfer orders out of Srinagar to another base in the western sector along the Pakistan border. “Security considerations prompted the transfer,” a defence ministry officer said and added that Wing Commander Abhinandan’s home base will “be another front-line fighter base.” The transfer orders came after security agencies indicated that the officer could be a target of the Pakistanbased Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) - the group that claimed responsibility for the February 14 Pulwama suicide attack which killed 40 jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Wing Commander Abhinandan’s new base is also a fighter base. If he is cleared for flying, he would be able to continue his flying duties. The Indian Air Force, however, said that the transfer

China draws up tighter rules on human gene and embryo trials: Xinhua China’s top legislature will consider tougher rules on research involving human genes and embryos, the first such move since a Chinese scientist sparked controversy last year by announcing he had made the world’s first “gene-edited” babies. He Jiankui, associate professor at Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, attracted condemnation from the global scientific community when he said he had used a technology known as CRISPR-Cas9 to alter the embryonic genes of twin girls born in November. Chinese authorities launched an investigation into He’s work and said they had halted the kind of research he was undertaking. Under the draft laws sent to China’s legislature for review on Saturday, medical and human trials would face closer scrutiny and stricter requirements, such as ensuring human subjects are properly briefed, state media outlet Xinhua reported. The rules would also require all future trials to be approved by administrative authorities as well as ethical committees, it said. The report did not specify a timeline for the approval of the regulations, or make specific mention of He’s research. In videos posted online and at the November 2018 conference where He made his controversial presentation, He said he believed his gene editing would help protect the girls from infection with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Lok Sabha elections 2019: EC notice to Sidhu for warning Muslims about division of votes New Delhi The Election Commission Saturday issued a showcause notice to Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu for his remarks in which he allegedly warned the Muslim community that efforts were on to divide their votes in Bihar. The EC said prima facie he has violated provisions of the model code of conduct, election law and a Supreme Court direction asking politicians not to mix religion with political discourse while electioneering. The Punjab minister has been asked to respond within 24 hours, failing which the EC will take a decision without further reference to him. The poll panel pointed out that an FIR has already been lodged against him in Bihar’s Kathiar under some sections of the penal code
and section 123 of the Representation of the People Act. Section 123 (3) bars promotion of, or attempt to promote, feelings of enmity or hatred between different classes of the citizens of India on grounds of religion, race, caste, community, or language, by a candidate or his agent or any other person. Addressing an election rally in Katihar on April 16, the cricketerturned-politician had stoked a controversy as he urged Muslim voters of a Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar with a sizeable population of the minority community to vote en bloc and defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The comments by former test cricketer came at a rally in Katihar, where he was canvassing in support of veteran Congress leader and former Union minister Tariq Anwar.
“Do not consider yourself as being in a minority. You constitute the majority here. You are about 64 per cent. Do not fall into the trap laid down by people like Owaisi (president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen). They have been propped up by the BJP,” Sidhu had said on Monday at a rally held at Barasol, in the Balrampur assembly segment under the Katihar Lok Sabha seat in Bihar.
