World’s largest plane makes first flight over California
The world’s largest aircraft took off over the Mojave Desert in California on Saturday, the first flight for the carbon-composite plane built by Stratolaunch Systems Corp, started by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, as the company enters the lucrative private space market. The white airplane called Roc, which has a wingspan the length of an American football field and is powered by six engines on a twin fuselage, took to the air shortly before 7 am Pacific time (1400 GMT) and stayed aloft for more than two hours before landing safely back at the Mojave Air and Space Port as a crowd of hundreds of people cheered. “What a fantastic first flight,” Stratolaunch Chief Executive Officer Jean Floyd said in a statement posted to the company’s website. “Today’s flight furthers our mission to provide a flexible
alternative to ground launched systems, Floyd said. “We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today’s flight crew, our partners at Northrup Grumman’s Scaled Composites and the Mojave Air and Space Port.” The plane is designed to drop rockets and other space vehicles weighing up to 5,00,000 pounds at an altitude of 35,000 feet and has been billed by the company as making satellite deployment as “easy as booking an airline flight.” Saturday’s flight, which saw the plane reach a maximum speed of 189 miles per hour and altitudes of 17,000 feet, was meant to test its performance and handling qualities, according to Stratolaunch.Allen, who cofounded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975, announced in 2011 that he had formed the privately funded Stratolaunch.
The company seeks to cash in on higher demand in coming years for vessels that can put satellites in orbit, competing in the United States with other space entrepreneurs and industry stalwarts such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX and United Launch Alliance — a partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Stratolaunch has said that it intends to launch its first rockets from the Roc in 2020 at the earliest. Allen died in October 2018 while suffering from nonHodgkins’ lymphoma, just months after the plane’s development was unveiled. “We all know Paul would have been proud to witness today’s historic achievement,” said Jody Allen, Chair of Vulcan Inc and Trustee of the Paul G. Allen Trust. “The aircraft is a remarkable engineering achievement and we congratulate everyone involved.”

Wolverhampton man jailed for selling illegal cigarettes
A local resident has been sentenced to 14 months imprisonment for selling illegal and counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco at his home address. Yesterday, (April 11) Peter Butler, from Bushbury North, was sentenced to 14 months in prison and ordered to pay £6k in court costs by Wolverhampton Crown Court. Through use of the Proceeds of Crime order, the City Council can request Mr Butler to reimburse taxpayers £39K - the amount of benefit he gained from his criminal activity if he ever comes into any money. In February 2018, Butler was caught red-handed after an estimated £40,000 worth of fake goods were found being stored in garden sheds, bedrooms and the living room at his property during a Trading Standards operation. The city council's Trading Standards team carried out 'operation gauntlet' to search a
residential property following reports of illegal sales of counterfeit tobacco. A shocking variety of fake and genuine cigarettes - which have avoided UK duty were found to being sold illegally at the property. Along with West Midlands Police, a trademark expert and specialist search dogs, the team inspected the entire property to search for hidden tobacco. Over 70,000 counterfeit cigarette and tobacco packets and were seized and taken for further examination.

Sikh groups from Delhi have demanded an apology for the Jallianwala massacre. Speaking at the Jallianwala Bagh Centenary Commemoration organised at the House of Lords in London last night, Vikramjit Sahney, patron of Jallianwala Bagh Centenary Commemoration Committee, said, “An apology cannot undo what has been done, but it would be a befitting tribute. The very Punjabis, who had given up their lives fighting for the British Empire in World War-I (1914-18), faced the massacre.” Sahney asked if Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could formally apologise for the Komagata Maru incident in 1914 in which hundreds of Indian passengers were denied entry into Canada and forced to return to an uncertain and ultimately violent fate
in India, why couldn’t the British Government apologise? Manjit Singh GK, a former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, said the British wanted to suppress Indian masses but this tragedy was like proverbially ‘waking up a sleeping lion’. As a result, the freedom struggle got further intensified. “The British must accept responsibility, said Manjit Singh GK. He posed a critical question: Was Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer acting on his own or was it a policy decision made in London? There is a school of thought that these actions were too serious to be carried out by Dyer on his own. After this event, British politicians carried out what is today known as “crowd funding” and raised £27,000 as a “reward for Dyer’s actions”.

Easter is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Let's look at the Bible to find the meaning of Easter and how it relates to the resurrection of Jesus. Romans shows us that baptism instead of Easter was given as a symbol of Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. Romans 6:3-5 says, "Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection"
What we see is that the true meaning is more than just a memorial for the resurrection one day a year with a church service. We can even celebrate the resurrection as we allow Christ's resurrection to become a reality in our lives as we live anew victoriously. Christ's death and resurrection is a daily hope of how the good will of God can overcome the forces of evil, of how truth will prevail and unmask the lie, of how love will triumph over sin, and how the blessed hope of eternal life will even put an end to death one day. Is it wrong to celebrate Easter? Let's make a clarification. Is it wrong to remember the
resurrection? No. It would be wrong to not remember it. Is Easter observance the way to do so? It would be remiss to not admit there is certainly a lot of pagan influence that has become tied to the resurrection in Easter. Nowhere are bunnies, chicks, or eggs mentioned in the Bible or in connection with Christ's resurrection. However, where there is opportunity to share the message and gospel of Christ without compromising the biblical truth, the "wise as serpents, harmless as doves" counsel of Christ is appropriate. How to observe it should be considered carefully allowing Bible study and prayer to guide our decisions.
Officials at the unearthed mass grave of Kurds killed by Saddam Hussein’s forces three decades ago, in Samawa, Iraq. (Below)An Iraqi member of the Civil Defense shows a human skull found from the site on Sunday.
Iraq unearths mass grave IRAQ MUST never forget Saddam Hussein’s crimes or allow his party to return, President Barham Salih said on Sunday after attending the unearthing of a mass grave of Kurds killed by the former leader’s forces three decades ago. The grave, found in the desert about 170 km west of the city of Samawa, contained the remains of dozens of Kurds made to ‘disappear’ by Saddam’s forces, Salih’s office said. They were among up to 180,000 people who may have been killed during Saddam’s “Anfal” campaign that targeted Iraqi Kurds in the late 1980s when chemical gas was used, villages were razed and thousands of Kurds were forced into camps. “He killed them because they did not accept the continuation of this regime, because they wanted to live a free and dignified life,” Salih, a Kurd, told a news conference at the grave site. “He brought them to Samawa to bur y them but our people in Samawa embraced them,” Salih added. Iraq’s southern provinces are predominantly inhabited by Shi’ite Arabs, who also suffered oppression and mass killings under Saddam, a Sunni Arab. “The new Iraq must never forget these crimes that were committed against Iraqi people from all groups,” he said. —Reuters

Tax man will be all over British royal baby
New York Talk about being born with a silver spoon in your mouth: the royal baby of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will have a particularly glittery one. And US tax authorities will be keen to know how much that utensil is worth. That’s because the baby will have dual nationality: British because of his father and US f r o m h i s A m e r i c a n m o t h e r, whose official title is the Duchess of Sussex. “When one of the parents is American and has resided in the US for five years with at least two after the age of 14, the baby is automatically a citizen,” said David Treitel, founder of A m e r i c a n Ta x R e t u r n s , a
consultancy for US expatriates living in Britain. “This is the case with Meghan,” said Treitel, noting this case is a first in the British royal family. US nationality comes with a bevy of restrictive conditions: like any American who is born, grows up and dies anywhere in the world, year after year Meghan and Harry’s child will have to show the Internal Revenue Service that his or her tax status is clean. From the moment of birth, money deposited in banks by the royal parents — eager to ensure a bright future for their progeny — must be duly reported to the tax man. The same would apply to
money that comes in if mom and dad decide, say, to have the child follow in the footsteps of his ex-actress mother to become a star on TV or in movies. Forget about privacy, said Treitel. The IRS will “get to know a lot more about the couple’s wealth” through the tax returns of the couple and their mother. “A lot more information is gonna get to the US,” he added. To wit: the IRS will demand that any valuable gifts from nonAmericans to Harry and Meghan’s child — and he will be feted, won’t he? — also be declared as assets. “Imagine the Queen giving the baby some nice beautiful book of art from the royal

collection, with paintings by Van Gogh or Miro. If this gift if worth more than USD 100,000, it is reportable,” said Treitel. However, baby shower gifts that Markle received recently in New York will not have to be declared if they came from

fellow Americans, the expert said. US tax authorities’ efforts to keep a close watch on American expatriates can have serious consequences for people whose sole link to America is that they were simply born there.
Google sharing data with US forces raises concerns San Francisco At a time when concerns over data collection and breach by tech majors are on the rise, it has been reported that US law enforcement officials have been turning to a particular Google database called "Sensorvault" to trace location and other data of people as part of their investigations. The database, that is otherwise maintained to collect user-information from Google products for ad targeting, contains detailed location records from hundreds of millions of phones from around the world, CNET reported on Saturday. On coming under question of exposing personal user data to law enforcement officials, the search engine giant ensured that the information obtained through the database is anonymous and that it reveals specific information only after the police has analysed and narrowed down the devices which would be relevant to the investigation. "We vigorously protect the privacy of our users while supporting the important work of law enforcement," the report quoted Richard Salgado, Director of law enforcement and information security at Google as saying. Before the officials could use Google's data-base for investigation purposes, they require a "geofence" warrant-that specifies an area and a time period that helps Google gather
information about the devices that were available in the specified window. "We have created a new process for these specific requests designed to honour our legal obligations while
narrowing the scope of data disclosed and only producing information that identifies specific users where legally required," Salgado added. Even though law
enforcements seeking help from tech giants is not uncommon, the use of "Sensorvault" data has raised concerns about innocent people who could be wrongly or mistakenly implicated. "The New York Times interviewed a man who was arrested last year in a murder investigation after Google's data had reportedly landed him on the police's radar. But he was released from jail after a week, when investigators pinpointed and arrested another suspect," the report added, citing an example of an innocent getting into trouble because of Google's data. Tech giants like Facebook, Microsoft and Google have been under global scrutiny following the countess data leak, hacking and non-consensual collection of data scandals.
Facebook particularly, become infamous after it admitted in April 2018 that information of up to 87 million people, mostly US citizens, may have been improperly shared with the British political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica. Google has also been subjected to scrutiny after it was revealed that the search engine giant had been tracking people's location even after they turned off location-sharing on their Android phones. According to information available on public domains, in 2017, Android accounted for more than 80 per cent of all smartphone sales to end users worldwide and by 2020, 85 per cent of all smartphones would run the Google-owned operating system.
Does not behove PM to stoop so low: Capt Chandigarh Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of playing “dirty politics” after the PM claimed that the Congress leader skipped an official event marking the Jallianwala Bagh massacre’s centenary as he was busy in “Congress parivar’s bhakti”. Capt Amarinder alleged that the Centre had deliberately chosen to hold a “parallel event” instead of supporting the programmes of the state government. The event, held in Amritsar on Saturday by the Centre, was attended by VicePresident M Venkaiah Naidu. The CM claimed he had personally approached the PM several times over the last two years to seek support for ensuring that the occasion is commemorated in a befitting manner, but
the Centre failed to respond suitably. “Instead, the Modi government decided to hold its own event, quite evidently to score political brownie points in the backdrop of the elections,” he alleged. “This was truly shocking considering that the PM is the chairman of the Jallianwala Bagh Trust.” Congress president Rahul Gandhi and the CM had on Saturday morning paid floral tributes at the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial in Amritsar. “Shocked at your remarks. You used a sombre occasion to play dirty politics, conveniently ignoring your government’s decision to hold a parallel event,” he tweeted. The Congress leader said that while Modi was busy in his usual dirty political games, he (Captain) was at the memorial for the statelevel event. A Cabinet minister (OP Soni) was present at the Centre’s function, he said.

India short of 6 lakh doctors, 20 lakh nurses, claims study Washington India has shortage of an estimated 6 lakh doctors and 20 lakh nurses, say scientists who found that lack of staff properly trained in administering antibiotics is preventing patients from
accessing life-saving drugs. Even when antibiotics are available, patients are often unable to afford them. High out-of-pocket medical costs to the patient are compounded by limited government spending for
health services, according to the report by the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP) in the US. In India, 65 per cent of health expenditure is outof-pocket, and such expenditures push some 5.7
crore people into poverty each year. The majority of the world’s annual 57 lakh antibiotic-treatable deaths occur in low and middleincome countries where the mortality burden from treatable bacterial infections
far exceeds the estimated annual 7 lakh deaths from antibiotic-resistant infections. Researchers at CDDEP in the US conducted stakeholder interviews in Uganda, India and Germany, and literature reviews to identify key access
barriers to antibiotics in low, middle and high-income countries.Health facilities in many low and middle-income countries are substandard and lack staff who are properly trained in administering antibiotics.

US lawmakers bat for India, seek more time to resolve duty-free trade issues Two senior US senators, who head the bipartisan India caucus in the upper chamber of congress, joined Friday a growing demand for the US trade representative (USTR) to delay a presidential proclamation terminating duty-free benefits for some imports from India by at least 30 days. The proclamation is due in a fortnight on May 4, at the end of a 60-day notice period that started March 4 when the White House notified US congress of the Trump administration’s intention to terminate India’s eligibility for the duty-free programme called the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). Senators John Cornyn, Republican, and Mark Warner, Democrat, urged the
USTR, Robert Lighthizer, in a joint letter to delay the presidential proclamation for “at least 30 days” in order to “move the negotiations beyond India’s elections”. They added; “We believe that the election season may serve as a hindrance for our Indian counterparts in negotiating and concluding a deal on difficult political issues. If another round of negotiations during the election season does not address the outstanding issues, we would ask you to consider delaying the issuance of the presidential proclamation.” Representative George Holding, the Republican cochair of the India Caucus in in an earlier letter for delaying we have a non-political best move forward, and I am GSP eligibility,” he wrote. the House of the proclamation till after the conversation about our concerned that this is not the Other US lawmakers have Representatives, made a elections. “It is important that differences and how we can right time to address India’s weighed in as well. “My hope similar appeal to the USTR is that we can delay, the termination of these GSP preferences until after the elections in India so that we can have a non-political conversation that is very focused on how we collectively can move forward together,” said Representative Tulsi Gabbard, former India caucus co-chair who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, at a recent event on Capitol Hill. To be clear, the lawmakers, who are from both parties, have only sought more time for negotiations, but not a mitigation of the Trump administration’s demands and efforts to address market access issues, which, Cornyn and Warner wrote, “we fully appreciate and support”. Though the termination decision was in the air, India was disappointed when it was announced because there was hope that it could be delayed till after the elections to allow negotiators more time to resolve issues that have dogged bilateral ties for a long time, from before President Donald Trump took office. There was also a sense of being let down at the implicit lack of understanding India’s earnest efforts to address outstanding trade issues — drastically cutting duty on imported HarleyDavidson motorcycles, a pet issue for the president, and scaling up imports (oil and gas specifically, for instance) from the United States to drastically reduce its trade surplus, another of President Trump’s trade goals.

Don’t doubt Capt’s patriotism, but he’s a ‘parivar bhakt’: Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hit out at Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh for not attending a function in Amritsar presided over by Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu to pay tributes to those killed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. “There is a difference between ‘rashtra bhakti’ (patriotism) and ‘parivar bhakti’ (loyalty to family). I have known Captain for decades and never questioned his patriotism. But I can understand the pressure on him for this ‘parivar bhakti’. Captain too has had to bend before it,” Modi claimed at an election rally here in support of Union minister Jitendra Singh, who has been renominated from Udhampur. This was the second election rally addressed by Modi in Jammu region in 18 days.
Referring to the Punjab CM’s absence at the commemoration ceremony organised by the Union Ministry of Culture in Amritsar, he said, “Yesterday when the whole country was paying tributes to those killed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Congress was busy playing politics,” the PM alleged. Meanwhile, charging erstwhile coalition partners (NC and PDP) with destroying three generations in J&K, the PM said the departure of Abdullahs and Muftis was a must to ensure a bright future for the state. He attacked the NC and PDP leadership for questioning India’s accession. “I want to tell these dynasts that they didn’t get J&K from their parents. The state is an integral part of India, not their inherited
property.” Accusing these “dynasts” of working with anti-national forces, he said: “The NC and PDP are threatening to secede and the Congress leadership is endorsing their threats by keeping mum. These dynasts can abuse Modi as much as they want, but they won’t be able to divide India. I want to tell the Muftis and Abdullahs, I’m Modi. I will not allow them to break the country.” He dubbed the Congress, PDP and NC as opportunists. “The statement by one of Congress’ allies asking for a separate PM for J&K reveals much about their alliance.” On the Congress manifesto, he said, “The Congress wants to hold talks with Pakistan’s proxies and dilute AFSPA. It is trying to demoralise our security forces. The party has lost the trust of the people.”

Tiger Zinda Hai: Woods wins 5th Masters to end 11-year Major drought Tiger Woods completed one of sport’s great all-time comebacks to end an 11-year Major title drought at the Masters on Sunday by claiming a fifth Green Jacket. A gritty 2-under 70 clinched a one-shot victory over Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele and earned the 43-year-old a 15th Major title that many thought would never come. Unsurprisingly, the triumph also renewed talks of Woods making a run at Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 Majors. Not since the 2008 US Open had Woods hoisted a Major trophy and the last of his four Augusta titles came in 2005. But after a beaming Woods slipped on his fifth Green Jacket, he will be aware that Sunday’s win has
brought him close to another Nicklaus record — that of six Augusta titles. The victory also marked the first time Woods had reached the winner’s circle at major without leading after 54 holes. Woods’s girlfriend Erica Herman, mother Kultida and two children Sam and Charlie watched while a massive gallery roared as he marched up to the 18th green to put the finishing touches on a milestone victory. When his final putt disappeared
into the cup, Woods delivered one of his trademark fist pumps then raised both arms in the air screaming in absolute delight as the crowd chanted, “Tiger, Tiger, Tiger”. Hugs children He then quickly spotted his family and raced over to hug his children before making his way to the scorers’ room while being congratulated by his fellow golfers who lined the way. “I was just trying to plod my way along the golf course all day,” said Woods. “When I tapped the putt in, I don’t know what I did but I know I screamed. To have my kids there — it’s come full circle. My dad was here in 97 (when he won his first Masters) and now I’m the dad with two kids there,” he added. Written off as too old and
too beaten up from four back surgeries and multiple knee operations, Woods underwent a back fusion in 2017 and slowly returned to form. He ended last season by winning the Tour Championship and showed signs of a breakthrough at the Majors by being a title contender at last year’s British Open, where he led in the final round, and PGA Championship, where he finished runner-up. All those moments built to Sunday, when Woods was once again his old familiar dominating self. All eyes were on leader Francesco Molinari, who led by two shots, Woods and the weather when play began as the race for the Green Jacket turned into a final sprint with the forecast predicting thunderstorms.
