TCL: Where did your interest in fashion come from? PO: My first interest in fashion came from my desire to stand out with what I wore in my University days. I just loved putting together outfits that not only flattered my body and complexion but also made me unique amongst my peers. After I finished my first degree, I decided to travel to London to study fashion and design. I am two years into my studies now. I honestly never thought my love and interest in fashion would grow into blogging and design. DA: I've always had a thing for fashion and dressing up. The quest of finding and developing my personal style began when I first went vintage shopping and came back home with a silk Valentino scarf I still wear and treasure 10 years later.

PO: My fashion inspiration comes from several people, places and situations. From social media to walking down the street, I am often inspired by how other people dress. I also get outfit ideas from past and present movies and plays. I enjoy old epic movies where the costumes are so well thought out. Even though we can't dress like the old days, I incorporate such elements into my style. My style is constantly evolving for this reason. TCL: Do you have a summer fashion motto? PO: My fashion motto this summer is to wear colour or prints as long the Sun is out!

THE ONES TO KNOW
Oliver Thomas Lipp
TEXTILE DESIGNER – Central St. Martins, London, UK BA (Hons) Textile Design, Specialising in Knit Many are not aware of the array of specialities that sit within design. You can specialise in certain materials, silhouettes and clothing categories and Central St. Martins is seen as the best place to delve into that due to its highest reputation score. With only a 6% acceptance rate, you can see why we wanted to talk to Oliver and get to know a little more about the technicalities of textile design. He considers himself a ‘material explorer’ and expresses his enthusiasm that knitwear design is not just jumpers and cardigans, but is in fact, part of a world where exciting things are going on.
What are your influences and inspirations that led you to this field of study? I’ve always been creative and in school, art and design was my favourite subject. When deciding to go to university I was unsure what it was that I wanted to do and Fine Art courses didn’t really suit me. Being accepted by Central Saint Martins meant I was able to test out many different areas but fashion and textiles was the pathway that spoke to me, it was very free: allowing fluidity. I found that the work that I had been doing all along seemed to fit into this field of study, allowing me to flourish. All this time it has been something that I have lived and breathed without really realising.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time and hope for within your career? I hope to continue to use all of the skills I have gained on my BA in the industry: gaining more experience, to ultimately aid me in a Masters in textiles/fashion. I’d like to take up as many creative opportunities as possible, to continue to gain confidence as a designer and grow, whether it be working freelance or for bigger brands. What’s paramount to me is that I am enjoying what I am doing and that I am creating pieces that are interesting and innovative, challenging my skills and pushing the boundaries within knit. Ultimately, I would love to develop my own brand but right now the time isn’t right.
What do you like and dislike about the industry you are in? I love that its so diverse and creative. There are so many areas to explore and with knit, I love the idea that you can make something out of nothing. It is a craft that has so much history and has ‘come back into fashion’ and is continually reinvented: seen year on year on the catwalk. I feel that in the industry, everything is moving very fast, because of this, I feel that creativity can sometimes be stunted. In some cases, designers are churning out collection after collection at such a rate that there often isn’t enough time to appreciate them. I’m a big believer that talent is everything and its ‘what you know’ that is most important. However, working in the industry since graduating I have found that ‘who you know’ is just as important and that networking is paramount.
See you next Issue!
