BEHIND THE SCENES

Women's varied shapes and sizes are now celebrated and are free of societal pressures.

9|10

FASHION FIX

We can now change from one type of girl to another, whenever the occasion calls, spending one day as a yummy mummy and the next as a top business woman.

11|14

'Being a woman has seen its ups and downs over the centuries, with the rise of feminism allowing us to have an equal place in society and be open to opportunities that could never have arisen even just 20 years ago.

We need to look deeper into what women want and know that they can change on a daily basis. Brands need to appeal to every type a woman can be and understand that they want different things from day to day. It is time to realise all that is woman and preserve what has been accomplished and see the emergence of what is yet to come'. Shannon Blanks Editor

So take a look at our top picks for what ever type of girl your daily activities need you to be.

THE LOUNGE'S

GIRLY GIRL – DON’T GO FOR THE OBVIOUS PINKS PRETTY MODERN - A SOFT TOUCH - THE NEW FEMININE

WHO SAID MOTHERHOOD AND FASHION DOESN’T MIX MOTHER KNOWS BEST - THE BUMPS BANG ON TREND Gone are your days of wearing baggy t-shirts, dungarees and joggers. Why should your fashion sense suffer just because you've become a mother? Admittedly, of course it's hard to stay on top of everything, but here are some tips and choices of our own that will definitely keep you looking fresh and ready for the day ahead. Jeans and a tee are an easy option, but try something different and wear a maxi that will elongate your figure, like this J-Chung Swinton Jersey – it's loose but not boxy. Layer over a long sleeved roll J CHUNG - SWINTON JERSEY SLIP-ON £155.00

neck – white or black, and dress down with some sneakers and big earrings for an edgy look. Finish with a low maintenance hairstyle - try a bob or wear it in a bun...or two. Alternatively, try the Black Maxi by Kasia Miciak – it's elasticated but loose on top and fitted around the hips to give some shape. Wear with edgy sandals and a bright tote to add some colour then customize your outfit with fine and delicate jewellery and stay clear of block necklaces and bangles. KASIA MICIAK - BLACK MAXI DRESS £75.00

Dressing ‘girly’ doesn’t inevitably mean pinks and frills. It’s understood today as a means of embracing a feminine look, which can also be sophisticated. It’s a classic style, that is also empowering to women, whether you chose to wear soft fabrics and pale colours or go 60’s retro and wear something that hugs your figure. A good way to modernise the look is to add feminine accessories, so don’t just give up on your black basics yet – instead, add florals, bold colours or a few pastel accessories to brighten up your outfit. Better yet, chose your most comfortable LBD or fitted suit and dress it up with a brightly coloured jacket or pair of heels. Pastel pinks have been seen all over the fashion weeks and is a huge summer staple so start with this and invest in a piece that you can throw over a a simple dress or white cotton shirt. BEHIND THE SCENES WITH REIN

CLEAN CUT and ELEGANT DOMANOFF - VEST WITH BASQUE £215.00

Odessa in the Ukraine is the birthplace of Domanoff, a minimalist brand that pays acute attention to detail. Although founded in 2006, it was Ukrainian Fashion Week in 2008 that really started the design-duo’s career, where they made their debut in the ‘New Names’ category and won the award for the most commercially successful collection. With a love of experimentation and innovation, the label combines seemingly conflicting shapes, cuts and textures for perfectly balanced pieces. Domanoff’s motto is that “clothes must have soul” and the designers adopt this emotional approach to their work by creating clothing that honestly and accurately reflects the wearer’s inner world and their emotional state. The label embraces symbols and hidden meanings, as well as individuality. They forge their unique pieces, many of which are handmade, from a variety of high-quality French and Italian fabrics. These are either natural or semi-natural, and are sometimes paired with cloth specifically crafted by their expert weavers.

SLAVIC

SOPHISTICATION

Specialising in bold, minimalist design in monochromatic shades, Domanoff’s clothing is utterly chic and understated.

Unique and modern, mixing creativity and social awareness, Cienne is a New York label making waves in the world of ethical fashion. Minimalist chic and beautiful tailoring aren’t necessarily the first things that you would associate with socially conscious clothing, but the brand’s founder, Nicole Heim, is dedicated to creating effortless sophisticated pieces that put hemp sack dresses to shame. Cienne works with Ethiopian artisans, experts in age-old weaving techniques, and develops their signature striped fabrics for up to six months before it is crafted by manufacturers in New York’s garment district. The brand stimulates the Ethiopian economy, protects the cultural heritage of the artisans and supports local industry in New York. Clean lines, contrasting proportions and unique fabrics create a label that expertly blends elements that are traditional and modern, international and local, trendy and timeless. Flawlessly elegant and unique, Cienne’s clothing is renowned for its refined style as well as its ethical credentials. It is perfectly designed for “girls with messy hair and thirsty hearts.”

EMPOWERING WOMANKIND through DESIGN There’s nothing more empowering than going into your wardrobe and choosing an outfit that you feel amazing in for that day or night ahead, and whilst everyone has their own style faves and faux pas, what you wear is just one way to create a statement about exactly who you are. When Rebecca Morter and Gemma Vanson graduated from London College of Fashion back in July 2013, a passion for not just fashion but feminism and empowerment united them. The pair went on to create their own label, REIN London, an innovative women’s fashion house that has become known and loved for their one-of-akind creations, international style values, quality and forward thinking design approach. The brand has subsequently been the one to watch thanks to support from The British Fashion Council, an overwhelming press interest, a ground-breaking debut at London Fashion Week and a steady stream of celebrity fans – Gemma and Rebecca’s designs have been worn by Lady Gaga, Little Mix, EVE, Charlie XCX, Alexandra Burke and Cheryl Cole. We caught up with co-founder Gemma to find out more about REIN, their Spring/Summer 2016 collection and how they aim to empower womankind through design.

TCL: Why did you decide to launch your own label – was there something missing from the market? GV: Rebecca and I met at university where we studied Fashion Design and Development together. We started working together in our final year and continued to design after graduating. We were both working full time for small fashion houses and after meeting with the British Fashion Council we were offered a spot in the emerging designers section of London Fashion Week. We decided then that it was time for REIN to have our full attention and the brand was born, since then we haven’t looked back. We feel that the brand is really different from any other – we have a strong purpose and our message is clear.

TCL: The relationship between body and clothing, and what is socially acceptable in terms of fashion, is vital to each of your collections, is this a subject that has always been close to your heart? GV: Yes it really has always been something that is present in all our collections. It comes from confidence; it shouldn’t matter what we wear it’s about the confidence we feel when we are in a certain piece of clothing.

TCL: How can our visitors celebrate their form in the season ahead? GV: Be comfortable in your own skin, it’s easy to see the negatives in all situations rather than taking the positives and congratulating yourself on them. Celebrate your form by being confident. Wear what you want when you want, and ask those questions about what is acceptable.

So much of what we think we know about what is acceptable we have merely accepted as fact and not questioned. Society has told us what is acceptable and that is changing, and it’s also different everywhere in the world. That’s why we want to push the boundaries, we want to be asking these questions.

Want the latest on REIN? shop the collection right here at The Clothing Lounge.

TCL: What is the inspiration behind your Spring/Summer 2016 collection? GV: Well giving our women strength is always at the forefront of our minds when designing. The SS16 collection is called ‘Labyrinth’ and is mapped out as a maze in stark white and solid black, highlighting a graphic disparity. Overall, our creations depict the startling sensibility of a woman in her battle to escape the everyday societal view of what is expected or deemed ‘normal’. Dense suede leathers are laser cut with geometric formations, where depth is heightened by heavy, thick yet intricate laser cut panels. This collection emits a bold but clinical aesthetic, and its wearer is strong and fierce, emerging unscathed, a heroic yet pure symbol of the journey travelled. application, ready to sell.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Travel

Underneath these clear oceans are the most vivid coral reefs, making this spot the best for diving and snorkeling. Cruises set sail to show tourists the divine terrain from afar and to give them a closer look at what lies beneath the translucent waters.

Instagram feeds filled with beaches in Bali and sightseeing in Morocco are bound to give every woman the travelling bug. There are so many ‘trendy’ places that people go, to relax, party, sightsee and participate in activities, but we feel that this summer should be a time to discover new places that are a little out of the ordinary.

If you are lucky enough to come across one of the many tribes situated in this unconventional country, you will see how this place has something to offer that nowhere else could dream of.

Just North of Australia, sits the beautiful island of Papua New Guinea, a country that is miles away from modern life and full of culture and awe. The beautiful nature is still in tact, completely untouched by present day technologies and architecture and the people living there are so authentic, it will take your breath away.

No matter what kind of woman you are, there is something that will appeal to you in Papua New Guinea.

Divine mountains fill the countries landscape and are filled with lush greenery and cascading waterfalls. You will be sure to come across some of the islands exotic wildlife when hiking across the scenic routes. Papua New Guinea is different to others as its culture lends itself to 700 languages, making it the most linguistically diverse country in the world. You will soon be saying common greetings in more languages then you could ever contemplate.

The tranquil, aqua blue oceans are outlined with white sand beaches that make it the perfect place to unwind and relieve your mind of everyday stresses from back home.

If you usually seek luxury comforts, this may not be the place for you, but we feel that you will find luxury in the enriching surroundings that will you give a sense of peace no five-star hotel could ever offer.

Nuli Sapi is accommodation that offers small but quaint, thatch-roofed bungalows that sit on wooden stilts over the water, ensuring your stay is as back to nature as it possibly could be. No matter if you are a sporty girl, business woman, yummy mummy or girly girl, or maybe even a mixture of all, use this trip to de-stress, relax, pamper your soul and exercise your mind and body with all that Papua New Guinea has to offer.

THE ONES TO KNOW

Dalton Taylor

FASHION DESIGNER – Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, USA Fashion design requires so much skill and precision. Studying endless fashion trends and catwalk shows make young designers aware of technique and vision and it allows them to gain their own. Inspiration comes from everything and in Dalton’s case, it came from construction sites. His SS16 show was so successful, it saw him land a job with Helmut Lang, making it hard to believe this young talent isn’t even fresh out of college. Photography credits: Heather and Jameson Hooton What are your influences and inspirations that led you to fashion photography?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time and hope for within your career?

What do you like and dislike about the industry you are in?

It definitely stemmed from the Ralph Lauren polo when I was in middle school. Not that I was obsessed with that style, but I think that was when I first began to respect the psychological aspect of marketing- how something so hype could cause kids to spend their entire month’s allowance on a $150 polo just to be able to impress people at school who also did the same exact thing to get theirs. From there, I tried out some fashion photography while in high school and learned to sew. It was in college I decided I liked both the business and the creative side of the industry, so I opted to study production management and product development.

I’ve done more in my industry and learned more in the past 1.5 years after moving to New York than I have in my entire life. Five years ago, I would have never seen myself having the opportunities I have been presented with now, and I hope to be in a job that continues to educate and enrich my knowledge of the industry. I’m extremely thankful of the people who have helped me get to where I am, and I know I have a long way to go, but the only way to go is up!

I love that it’s always changing. My personality is lacking in the field of patience, and everything in the world of fashion is so fast paced. There is no down time- which I love and hatebut it causes you to become a quick thinker, an efficient problem solver, and a dependable team player. It really gets you to expand your mind and way of thinking. I’ve seen and learned you can’t be a stagnant thinker here. Like a game of chess, everyone’s always trying to think 3 moves ahead.
