everyone’s talking about... DAGGER THROUGH THE HEART FOR VB Victoria Beckham has

described the moment her tomboy daughter Harper revealed that she wants to be a footballer! “It was like a dagger through the heart,” Victoria said. “I already have three boys who want to play football, come on, let one of them want to be into fashion!” Harper said to her mum, “I want to be a footballer,” Vic told reporters at New York Fashion Week after showcasing her latest collection to warm reviews. Mind you Harper “Seven” Beckham – named after her Dad´s England football number (maybe it was meant to be) is still only 4 years old and there will be plenty of Mummy´s runway shows to turn her.

RIHANNA DATING TRAVIS SCOTT

It´s official, Rihanna is dating rapper Travis Scott after a whirlwind New York Fashion Week romance. The Bajan beauty was spotted kissing the 23-year-old rapper at a Fashion Week party, with insiders claiming that they’re not just messing around. “Travis and Rihanna are dating, officially. It’s already very serious. He’s very into her,” a close friend revealed to E! News. The inseparable pair have already done their

first photoshoot together for RiRi´s new Puma trainer range and it´s very sexy and sultry like the two performers, as this picture reveals. Travis, who has been a long time collaborator with Rihanna’s close friend Kanye West, is said to be exactly the kind of guy the singer goes for. “Rihanna likes Travis a lot and all of her friends think he is gonna be the keeper. Travis is completely her type and they share the same interests,” her friend added.

PRINCE NASSEM - PACKING A PAUNCH Boxing legend Prince Nassem Hamad has seriously piled on the pounds as this pic from a recent shopping trip with wife Eleasha shows. The now cuddly 41-year-old used to way under 10 stone during his fighting days but

has now ballooned to a massive 18 stone. Hamad quit the ring aged 28 and his weight has crept upon him over the years. Long term wife Eleasha is clearly unfazed by his weight gain and cuddled him for all onlookers to see.

Despite numerous reports that the youngest Kardashian, Kylie has been under the knife the 18-year-old model and reality TV star insists her breasts are completely natural. Posting two pics on her new website and app last month Kylie revealed her secret tip – a simple cleavage enhancing bra! “I don’t share this with a lot of people, but everyone thinks I’ve gotten breast augmentation recently, but I haven’t. I just use the Bombshell by Victoria’s Secret. It’s life-changing. I’ve gotten all my sisters on it and all my friends. Clearly, it’s like 10 times bigger - no contouring, no nothing.” she reveals.

NEWS NICK & JESS AT WAR AFTER $12M DIVORCE SLIP UP Former Newlyweds star Nick Lachey is reportedly spitting bullets at ex wife Jessica Simpson after she let slip she paid the former boyband star $12m after their divorce. The mum-of-two, whose brand has soared since she appeared on MTV’s Newlyweds, opened up about her first marriage after she was quizzed about her biggest money mistakes. “The biggest money mistakes? I don’t know. For some reason I thought of my

first marriage,” the 35-yearold told a CNBC host. Jessica and Nick married in 2002 and got divorced in 2005. The couple didn´t sign a pre-nup. It was actually advice given by Jessica´s dad Joe as Nick was worth more than her at the beginning of their career. How the tables have turned?! Nick, who is now happily married to Vanessa Minnilo, is said to be furious with Jessica for bringing it up.

KATE LANDS MOVIE ROLE We always knew supermodel Kate Moss wouldn´t waste any time moping around after her marriage break up. And she certainly hasn´t - a few weeks after the news was announced - Kate auditioned and landed a role in the forthcoming Absolutely Fabulous movie, also starring Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders. The Croydon born supermodel, 41, and her Kills frontman husband called time on their relationship in August after reports he had been unfaithful with a Victoria´s Secret model. Kate has been seen out and about a lot recently including trips to Turkey and Ibiza with pals. Good on you girl!

The 76-year-old fashion icon, sat on top of the tank and defiantly drove through David Cameron´s Whitney constituency in Oxfordshire last month. RECIPE

If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Cue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.

HARISSA CHICKEN WITH SAFFRON RICE A lighter alternative to a Sunday roast. Sinfully easy to make but impressive to your guests, it also makes for a brilliant dinner party dish as the oven and stove do all the hard work for you. Taken from The Milly Cookbook, the new celebrity chef cookbook that offers healthy, nourishing and exciting dishes that you and your body will love.

INGREDIENTS ● 1 free range organic chicken ●1 jar of harissa paste (available at all major supermarkets)

● 1 mug full of brown rice ●2 mugs full of chicken or vegetable stock

● A pinch of saffron ●L emon cut into discs and Parsley to serve

● Salt

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 180℃. 2. Place your chicken on a tray

and brush harissa paste all over it until completely covered. Slash the thighs with a sharp knife down

to the bone (this helps the brown meat cook in the same time as the white). Sprinkle with salt and pop in the oven for as long as the packaging says (based on weight and size). 3. Twenty minutes before the chicken has finished cooking, get a saucepan and pour in your mug of rice. One mug feeds 4 people, and for every mug of rice you want double the liquid - this is called the absorption method. So for 1 mug of rice, you want to add 2 mugs of stock. Throw in the saffron, season with a little salt and pepper and bring to the boil. 4. Once boiling, turn down to a simmer, add a dash of extra virgin olive oil and cover with a lid. After 15 minutes, check the rice, if it needs a few more minutes you have time. 5. Take the chicken out to rest for 5 minutes and when the rice is cooked and has absorbed all of the water place it on a platter with the chicken. Serve with slices of lemon and a sprinkle of parsley and let everyone help themselves.

WINE MATCH With spicy foods like Harissa – tannins in wines can be unpleasant so the important thing here is not to try and overpower the chicken dish with a strong wine. The good news is there is a large selection of both red and white wines that go perfectly with this dish. For reds, try a lighter, fruitier type of wine with low tannins such as a Beaujolais or a Rhone. Away from France, a South African or Lebanese Pinot Noir would match well too. For white wine - fruity or even slightly sweeter wines will go well – a Reisling or a bright, unoaked Spanish white would be a great choice. Finally, for non-wine drinkers consider a light ale.

NEWS DVD REVIEW

JURASSIC WORLD Steven Spielberg returns to executive produce this long awaited fourth installment to Michael Crichton´s epic tale and it scores on a lot of points. Namely, the action, chases, CGI and return to the original Jurassic Park location. This all makes Jurassic World a much more enjoyable blockbuster than the first two disappointing sequels. However it happens to miss out on a lot of areas too, namely the characterisation. Although maybe this is the point as most of the characters just turn out to be dinosaur fodder?! The main character, played by the normally talented Chris Pratt, comes a bit unstuck in the believability stakes as he ascertains that dinosaurs are misunderstood and wants to team up with the good dinosaurs to kill the super killer dinosaur (really!) However his warm, comical likeability shines through and he does turn into a credible hero by the end of the film. His chemistry with co-star Bryce Dallas Howard and the child characters are reminiscent of Sam Niell´s and Laura Dern´s characters from the original. It can definitely be said that Spielberg, who directed the first installment, helps turn this into a spectacle; bustling with action and adventure… credibility issues aside though!

AVICII – STORIES

SIX OF CROWS

Stories is the second studio album by top Swedish DJ, turned producer Avicii whose hits have included Wake Me Up and Hey Brother. Having released the official lead single for the album Waiting for Love to resounding chart success, peaking at number 1 on the iTunes Singles Chart in a whopping 22 countries earlier this summer, expect more of the same from this cool, electronic DJ´s latest EP. Comprising of 14 original tracks including For a Better Day another sure fired smash. “It´s going to be a lot more song-orientated,” Tim Bergiling hinted of the album. Avicii has been playing a lot of the tracks on the album in various forms during his sets over the past year, including Broken Arrows his collaboration with the Zac Brown Band, which was premiered on Tiësto’s Club Life earlier in the summer. There are some noticeable omissions from the album though including his track Heaven with Chris Martin, but it may have been renamed True Believer, which the Coldplay frontman is credited on. Avicii is fast making waves on the mainstream music circuit with these tie-ups, reminiscent of David Guetta´s career. Some pundits are even claiming he could be as big as the Guetta Blaster. Fans of Avicii´s first album True will not be disappointed with this follow up album.

Leigh Bardugo is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Grisha Trilogy. This latest fantasy adventure novel centres around the dangerous city of Ketterdam which is governed by the Merchant Council, but in reality, large sectors of the city are given over to gangs who run the gambling dens and brothels. The underworld’s rising star is 17-year-old Kaz, known as Dirtyhands for his brutal amorality. Kaz walks with chronic pain from an old injury, but that doesn’t stop him from destroying any rivals. When a councilman offers him an unimaginable reward to rescue a kidnapped foreigner, Kaz knows just the team he needs to assemble. There’s Inej, an acrobat captured by slavers and sold to a brothel, now a spy for Kaz; the Grisha Nina, with the magical ability to calm and heal; Matthias the zealot, hunter of Grishas and caught in a hopeless spiral of love and vengeance with Nina; Wylan, the privileged boy with engineer’s skills; and Jesper, a sharpshooter who keeps flirting with Wylan. Bardugo broadens the universe she created in the Grisha Trilogy, sending her protagonists around countries that resemble postRenaissance northern Europe, where technology develops in concert with the magic that’s both coveted and despised. A cracking page-turner with a multiethnic band of misfits with differing sexual orientations who satisfyingly, believably jell into a family. ROCKS RATING:

Bentley bantayga WATCH OUT PORSCHE & RANGE ROVER: BENTLEY´S NEW SUV IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH…

B

entley has just released all the details of its new Bentayga at the IAA Frankfurt Show and according to Marbella Rocks journalists, the car they have been billing as the most luxurious and exclusive SUV in the world, will be just that. According to our insiders traditional Bentley DNA is apparent throughout every inch of the Bentayga – from the finest automotive cabin with unrivalled levels of precision. The detailing in metal, wood and leather including meticulous tolerences between elements of trim is the epitome of modern luxury. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Crewe, it balances athleticism with style and is Bentley through and through. From the four round LED headlamps and large matrix grille to its effortless Bentley performance, unrestrained by climate or terrain. The all-new twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine is at the heart of the new Bentayga. The mighty

12-cylinder unit combines ultra levels of power and torque. With 608 PS and 900 NM it delivers a 0-60 mph time of 4.0 seconds and a top speed of 187 mph – the Bentayga is now the world´s most powerful and fastest SUV. Those statistics make the Bentley as quick as a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, although the Bentley has a higher top speed. Yet in spite of improvements to the weight, emissions and economy of the W12 engine, CO2 is measured at 292g/km and claimed average mpg is only 22.1mpg. That said, a sizeable fuel tank means a range of over 370 miles should be achievable. The launch model will be joined later by high performance, clean technology diesel and plug-in hybrid, as well as a seven seater option. The development programme for the Bentayga has been the most expensive and exhaustive in the Bentley brand´s history. For starters, an additional €150m has been invested to build the Bentayga. And the SUV has been

V tested across 5 continents, from the dirt and gravel of South Africa and the dunes of Dubai, to the muddy fields of Cheshire, and from minus 30 degrees in the frozen North Cape to searing 50 degree desert heat, the Bentayga´s ability to perform on any surface and even in the most extreme conditions has been proven. The Bentayga has eight driving modes available: Sport, Bentley, Comfort and Custom, plus four off-road modes. The air suspension system offers four ride heights. In addition, there’s an electronic hill descent system. Bentley Dynamic Ride uses a

48V system for quicker response to counteract the roll normally associated with such high-sided vehicles. Plus as these images show there are innovative onboard improvements, including Bentley entertainment tablets – removable android devices with 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth for highspeed, on-board connectivity. Other innovative systems on the Bentayga include Electronic Night Vision, using infra-red technology to identify potential obstacles ahead and a head-up display to reduce driver distraction. For added luxury and if you plan

to travel in your new Bentayga, at launch Bentley are offering an exquisite, integrated Mulliner Hamper Set, complete with refrigerator, china cutlery, crockery and crystal glass set. Sections of the hamper can also be removed and used as seats for comfort in the great outdoors! In conclusion, this is by far the most luxurious SUV to appear on the marketplace today and yes, as you expected, this is reflected in the price tag of €175,200. tinashe

T

inashe is already being pitted as the poster girl for the next generation of R&B stars. At only 22, she is already basking from the success of smash singles like “2 On” to her numerous world tours. This past year has proven that she is a musical force to be reckoned with. Tinashe Kachingwe is not only a singer and songwriter, but also a professional dancer and actress. Her music career began in 2007 with the formation of a girl group called The Stunners. There are musicians and artists who can claim some experience in the world of show business, some from a relatively early age. Tinashe arguably trumps all of them, having been consistently modeling, acting and studying ballet, tap and jazz dance forms since the age of 3. She cut short her time at the Crescenta Valley High School in Los Angeles to focus on music full time. Vitamin C, the “Graduation (Friends Forever)” singer formed The Stunners when Tinashe was 14 and they were signed to Columbia six months later. The group released one EP, toured with Justin Bieber and were going to record an album before they split in 2011. The same year, Tinashe gave her first ever televised singing performance, in front of a live crowd of 57,000 at a baseball game and soon after that she signed with music giants, Universal. If all this is sounding a little too Disney Princess for you, her first solo E.P, entitled “In Case We Die” cryptically enough, was recorded entirely herself in her home studio and saw comparisons to the likes of Frank Ocean. Since then her march to take over the world has taken her to the upper reaches of the Billboard charts, her single “2 On” peaked at number 24 on the Hot 100 and her debut album “Aquarius” went straight in at number

17 on the album charts. The second single from that album, “Pretend” saw her working with A$AP Rocky and with that, it´s become clear that it’s only a matter of time before she becomes something of a legend. She is the perfect link between pop accessibility and the artist’s touch of a true auteur. Tinashe is a true performer in every sense. She is a phenomenal dancer and often opens her concerts with breathtaking dance routines. She is known to interact with fans during the show, sometimes taking their phones and recording or making them sing. She has already toured with Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Nicky Minaj. This November sees the release of her second album Joyride on which she´s enlisted the big guns! Take Drake, Dr. Luke, Max Martin (who has just racked up his 20th No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Bad Blood”), Cirkut and Rock City. Tinashe is envisioning this upcoming album as her most authentic statement thus far. “With this album, I have a much clearer direction going into it of what I want as opposed to just shooting darts at the wall,” she says. With Aquarius, I knew what I wanted to do, but everybody that I was working with really had no clue who I was or what I wanted to do. They came up with a lot of stuff that wasn’t necessarily true to me. “What I’ve learned with this second album is to not waste time making records that aren’t going to end up on the project. Don’t waste time spending the first day getting to know the producer and just cutting whatever they want. I used to do stuff like that, breaking the ice, and we would end up with a lot of material that I didn’t necessarily want in the end.”

FASHIONISTA

While her music is predominately

R&B mixed with a generous helping of hip hop, Tinashe likes to take fashion risks - leaving the hip hop, swagga gear at home and pioneering new fashion forward looks from icons that have inspired her. Take her 2015 MTV VMA outfit, a vintage Alaia dress from 1991- which she paired with killer over-the-knee Dior boots. The singer´s inspiration was 90´s supermodels. “It´s a look I like to call Naomi Campbell meets Cindy Crawford,” she said. Her most recent look at Jeremy Scott´s New York Fashion Week runway show cheekily consisted of a Moschino tape measure dress in homage to all the US fashion designers showcasing at the event.

TENACIOUS ACTRESS

Not a lot of people of recent Tinashe fans know she is also an acclaimed actress. She made her acting debut in the television film Cora Unashamed in 2000. In 2004, Tinashe appeared in box-office hit The Polar Express alongside actor Tom Hanks, providing the motion capture for the female protagonist. From 2008 to 2009, Tinashe had a recurring role in hit American sitcom Two and a Half Men as Celeste, Jake’s girlfriend. While she appears to have put her acting career on hold to concentrate on music, Tinashe has said that she would like to go back into films at a later date. Think Jennifer Lopez at the peak of her day when she often took the lead roles in films such as Maid in Manhatten and Out of Sight with George Clooney whilst still pursuing her musical career, notching up No.1´s and Oscar nods. Tinashe totally knows where she wants to be going and this R&B goddess definitely has the skills, talent and drive to take her there.

MARBELLA ROLLS OUT

THE RED CARPET FOR

THE FILM INDUSTRY

C

ould Marbella be the next Hollywood? One man certainly thinks so. Mac Chakaveh, Director of the Marbella International Festival, which comes to town this month, believes Marbella has everything a movie producer could wish for. “We feel there’s everything here for the industry,” he says. “There’s nowhere else on Earth that has all of the things Marbella does - not in Cannes and not in Hollywood. It’s a really amazing place; the only thing missing is the industry.” And that’s something he hopes to change. Mac founded the Marbella Film Festival in 2005 – it celebrates its 10th anniversary this year – with the aim of providing a platform for talented but unknown filmmakers. His festival has succeeded in giving a number of now household names a leg up into the industry, such as actor Marc Warren, who went on to star in The Good Wife. Now he wants to turn the spotlight on Marbella itself. He says the town’s recent appearances on popular TV shows The Only Way is Essex and Life on Marbs (starring our very own

32 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 15

Alex and Jordan) demonstrate how the destination could start to attract movie moguls and their cash. “Programmes such as these are already bringing business here and there is so much opportunity to grow this,” says Mac. “The film industry is one of the growth industries at the moment; it’s going through the roof. If you’re making a movie it brings in a lot of money. This benefits everyone from the hotels and restaurants to taxi drivers and tradesmen. “We feel if we could have three of four movies made here a year – with an average budget of €10m at the low end - you’ve suddenly got €50m worth of industry coming to a place that’s currently 100% dedicated to golf and tourism.” The Film Festival, which runs from October 7 to 11 and takes place at the H1O Andalucía Plaza Hotel, will include a number of networking sessions and after parties and Mac is urging local businesses to take the opportunity to meet with film industry professionals. He says: “We’ve got producers coming from all over the world Japan, India, two from Hollywood.

These are people you couldn’t possibly reach otherwise. “We now need people to come down and pitch them - whether they’re in the music business, own a nightclub that would make a great location or are a carpenter who could build sets. “They have to say ‘what can I do to get involved in the film industry and help bring it to Marbella?’ There’s potential for every business.” For those who dream of getting behind the camera, the festival features a programme of workshops offering insider knowledge. “This year we have the producer of The King’s Speech,” says Mac. “He’s going to lecture on how to be a producer and how to make a film like The King’s Speech, which was actually rejected by almost everybody and then went on to be a huge success.” However, if you simply enjoy watching movies, there’s plenty to keep you entertained, with more than 50 independent films, shorts and documentaries being screened at the newly refurbished Teatro Goya cinema in Puerto Banus. Filmgoers can choose the features that take their fancy and pay for tickets on the door. The films have been shortlisted from around 700 entries and span from Almost Friends; a documentary about the unlikely friendship between a Jewish girl living in the Gaza Strip and an Arab girl from Israel, through to British gangster film The Rise of The Krays. The film, about the notorious Kray twins, will be premiering at the festival, alongside fellow British flicks Arthur & Merlin and North V South (a modern-day Romeo and Juliette set

in London’s criminal underworld). “Unlike other film festivals, we have no restrictions on film subjects so we have many totally different styles of film,” explains Mac. “The purpose is purely to promote the talent and give them recognition.” “I think the public will love the glossy gangster films, but we also want to reach out to people and encourage them to try out some foreign films; to come and see something they might not usually choose. “A great option is to come and see the shorts. They’re grouped together into 90 minutes, so that’s a good way to take in a lot in a short time.” A VIP festival pass, giving you full access to all of the screenings, workshops, parties and the black tie awards dinner, costs €215. RISE OF THE KRAYS INTERVIEW

W

riter and Co-Producer of The Rise of The Krays, Sebastian Brown, talks to Marbella Rocks about why the public remains captivated by the infamous Kray twins… THE STORY OF THE KRAYS HAS BEEN TOLD BEFORE, WHY DID YOU WANT TO RE-TELL IT AND HOW DOES YOUR STORY DIFFER? First and foremost, the Krays’ story is a compelling one. Two poorly educated boys, born into poverty in war-torn London, rise to dominate the capital’s criminal fraternity and rub shoulders with the country’s elite. But the more we researched the subject, the more we were drawn to the complex relationship between the twins and its changing dynamics as Ronnie’s madness gradually claimed precedence over Reggie’s more considered approach. On a wider front, we felt that the Boothby cover up, which enabled the twins to progress to their “untouchable” status (a “no go” area for the police, politicians and newspapers) needed airing. Our take is “the inside story” narrated by a fictitious Firm member who was Reggie’s right hand man

34 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 15

throughout their reign of terror. HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT RESEARCHING THIS INFAMOUS PAIR? There are well over 50 books on the Krays and we read most of them. The Krays are the most widely covered criminals in the UK. Research was never a problem. Choosing what material to omit was a much bigger problem for us. YOU’VE ALSO WRITTEN A SECOND SCREENPLAY THE FALL OF THE KRAYS – WAS THERE JUST TOO MUCH TO COVER IN ONE FILM? Very much so. We had enough material for a six-part mini series! The “Fall” allowed us to explore the various relationships more fully but we still had to cut some great scenes to make sure we met the 90 minute film format. Even then we overran. WHAT MOTIVATED THE CASTING OF SIMON COTTON AND KEVIN LESLIE AS THE TWINS? The choice of the actors to play the twins caused quite a few headaches. Like everyone, we were trapped into the fact that the Krays were (in their early years at least) identical and it

wasn’t until we released ourselves from the obligation of casting identical twins to play the roles that we started to make some headway. Simon and Kevin auditioned on the same day and we put them together to see how the chemistry worked. After just one test screening together we knew there was great chemistry between them. Zack Adler, the director, shouted: “We have our twins” as soon as they had finished their reading together. WHERE WAS THE FILM SHOT? Every scene was shot in London. Our locations managers did a magnificent job, sometimes sourcing the perfect locations just days before we were due to shoot the scene. HOW DID YOU ENSURE IT LOOKS AND FEELS AUTHENTIC TO THE ERA? Costumes and make-up played an essential role in setting the mood of the era and a huge amount of research went into these aspects of filming. The Art Department was instrumental in sourcing genuine artifacts from the period, including the red phone booths, 1950’s radios, office telephones and even lighters. Of course, camera and lighting

FEATURES

added the finishing touches, making sure the film carried a dark edge. HOW LONG HAS IT TAKEN TO BRING THIS FILM TO FRUITION? DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHALLENGES IN PRODUCTION? It has taken three years to bring the film to the screen during which time we faced many challenges. One of the biggest was the need to film both the “Rise” and the “Fall” back to back. This put severe pressure on everyone as we undertook an eightweek shoot, based on twelve-hour shifts and eleven-day fortnights, with shoots sometimes finishing at 5am. HOW PLEASED ARE YOU WITH THE RESULT? HAS ANYONE WHO KNEW THE KRAYS SEEN IT? We are very pleased with the result and the film has been very well received. Billy Murray, (The Bill, East Enders etc.) knew the Krays and was behind the original idea to resurrect the Krays story. Ronnie funded him through drama school and he was a massive support throughout the project. He has been a weather vane as the script unfolded and has been quick to reprimand us when the economics of filming got in the way of historical

accuracy or the dialogue strayed too far from the reality. HOW FAR INTO PRODUCTION WERE YOU WHEN YOU DISCOVERED ANOTHER KRAYS FILM WAS BEING MADE? YOU MUST HAVE BEEN PRETTY DISAPPOINTED? We found out about Legends a year into the project and we did discuss cancelling it when we heard about the big budget competitor. Some argued that it was suicide to go head to head with the leading UK studio, an Oscar winning director/writer and arguably the best actor in the world. You can appreciate that it wasn’t a difficult argument to advance! It was David Sullivan, the Executive Producer and one of the film’s financiers who tipped the balance. He argued that the team as young as it was, should not fear taking on the best, citing the old football adage that “if you’re good enough your old enough”. In terms of budget, it is a bit of a David and Goliath situation but we are pleased with our take on the story and are excited to see theirs. Comparisons will be made, of course, but we welcome that and are ready for it.

WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE STILL SO FASCINATED BY THE KRAYS? It is difficult to say exactly why the Krays still capture the imagination. One answer I suppose is that they cultivated the image of fearsome gangsters. It has been said that Reggie could have got a softer sentence had he claimed he was pressured by his mad brother’s stronger character into his criminal activities, but Reggie flatly refused to do this because it would ruin their (his) image. Subsequent books and films have tended to glamorise their story. We resisted this on the grounds that they were evil and should not be glamorised, but we may well have been more forgiving in our approach to Reggie than we intended. It is an easy trap to fall into when playing opposite him you have a person who was completely mad. Rise of The Krays will premier at the Marbella International Film Festival. Don’t miss your chance to see it at Teatro Goya at 8pm on Friday October 9. Fall of The Krays is scheduled for release in January 2016.

I

t’s a tricky time of year to shop for clothes. Although we´re lucky to have mild winters, this does make shopping for what the fashion houses deem winter wear that bit more difficult. Boutiques, department and chain stores are presenting us with heavy knits, coats and things that you won’t have use for unless you are travelling somewhere cold! What we really need is a mix of chunky knits, light knits, denim, leather and layering to really dress the part in winter in Spain. I clocked and mentally noted during my impromptu smash and grab shopping session, fabulous light trench coats, draped cardis, pants in fabrics that will see you through from now until next summer and enough pops of colour to keep things bright and breezy while it’s still warm. In this column I’m sharing my key fashion tips and trends for autumn/winter 2015, some styling ideas from what’s available in store now plus a snapshot of what to buy now if you have certain gaps in your wardrobe. So put your summer sandals into storage and introduce these fabulous fall style tips into your look!

FASHION

WINTER dresses

Mixing ankle boots with a cute dress is an easy way to sport this season’s trends at the start of the season. Then as the weather cools, you can add tights or leggings and a cute jacket. I recommend a short summer dress in a bit of a darker colour. It has the perfect amount of structure and looks totally on trend with ankle boots. You can add a bit of brightness with a statement necklace, and balance everything out with a neutral clutch and bracelet. Mixing neutrals like navy and brown is a great way to unexpectedly change up the colour scheme of your look. There are a lot of neutral colors popping up for fall, so don’t be afraid to mix them up a bit.

LAYER UP

Layering is a simple way to add depth and dimension to your outfit. If done right, you’ll be right on trend this season. I love mixing different textures because, again, it’s unexpected, which makes you stand out in a good way. Perfectly layer a super soft chambray shirt with a studded green military vest.

A vest is definitely a staple piece for fall that you can wear now and when the temperature drops. There are many vest styles this season, including denim, leather, moto style, oversized and fitted. I love the green military style because its neutral color makes it simple to dress up or down, and that’s important when building your fall wardrobe.

COLOURS AND PRINTS

Traditionally A/W doesn’t offer much up in the colour department. Blacks, charcoals, winter whites, beige/stone are all great neutral shades that are already out there in good supply. As you know I’m very ok if you feel more comfortable wearing a neutral palette. There are plenty of ways to make neutrals exciting and this season that is certainly the case with a bigger focus on structure and texture than ever before. If you are a colour lover then there are options coming through too. The strongest colour trends are navy (yay for that rinse and repeat colour trend) and magenta/maroon/burgundy.

DON’T FORGET DENIM

Denim jeans will always be a fall staple. There are several styles out there, so it can be difficult when searching for the perfect pair. Skinny jeans are a must common go-to style because you can wear them with just about any shoe, whether flats, ankle boots, riding boots, heels, etc. Boyfriend jeans will also make an appearance for fall. These are slouchy-style jeans with a loose fit. The details of the jeans will stand out the most this season. Destroyed and embellished jeans are the way to go because they are fun and unique. (Check out the fabulous Flamingo Market Place jeans in the fashion shoot this month!) I love jeans with reflection of vintage because they have a cool stitched pattern that creates an updated look to basic skinny jeans. Rolled hems add a cool, casual vibe when paired with ankle boots.

LOTS OF LEATHER ISSUE 15 | MARBELLAROCKS

43

FASHION

If you’re looking to add a sleek edge to your outfit, go for leather. Leather jackets are typically the easiest way to accomplish this. As mentioned before, mixing textures is the way to go this season. Pairing leather with a delicate fabric like lace is the perfect way to balance out an edgy look. If you’re a little more adventurous you can look for leather pants, leggings or even all-leather dresses. But no one wants to wear leather in hot Marbella weather. So if you really want to don your leather piece right now, look for a leather vest to layer over your tanks and dresses. You can use it later by layering over your long-sleeved shirts.

ACCESSORISE IN STYLE

There are two types of accessory styles floating around this fall: the in-your-face accessory and the understated accessory. I prefer to switch things up and wear both, depending on the day. I love chunky watches with rhinestone detailing, but I’m also obsessed with thin, subtle rings. Long crossbody bags and structured

44 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 15

bags are on my radar for fall, but I can’t forget the statement necklace. I throw on a statement necklace when I want my outfit to pop. I leave dainty necklaces for when I’m feeling laid-back and casual.

SUEDE AND FRINGING

Already dangling in your favorite boutiques, suede fringe will continue to play a prominent role in apparel and accessories. (Ladies, it’s time to let your inner cowgirl loose!) Lace and laser cut-outs are two details also forecasted to remain strong. Keep an eye out for vintage patches and appliqués; think old-school letterman jackets and sweaters, along with team pennants and athletic patches. In a nod to handicraft; big buttons, quilting, and patchwork will also be popular, while updated graphics and photography will spice up patterns and prints. As for footwear, the wedge bootie is predicted to give your seasonal style a kick! So if you want your winter wardrobe to weather more than just one season--while still being on the forefront of fashion -

start stocking your closet now with vintage-inspired colors and details; cozy, oversized knits; and cowgirlmeets-Little-House-on-the-Prairie fabrics and accessories. Minimal hardware (i.e. buckles) helps keep the look on the sleek side of casual, making these boots as versatile as they are trendy.

BOHO’S BACK (AGAIN!)

Yes, that Seventies show swings on for a second season. The vibe has gone more folksy than glam rock this time, with Burberry Prorsum, Valentino and Lanvin piling on the prints and fringing in a total texture overload. Houses like Chloe were in their element once more, building on the hit dresses from their spring collections with new layers of suede and patchwork knits. Key piece? The poncho.

SWINGING SIXTIES

Grab your go-go boots because we are swinging back into the 60s. New York Fashion Week has shown huge trends that are going back in time. Valentino, Louis

FASHION Vuitton, and Gucci all worked together in finding a “groovy” trend for fall. Tailored coats with oversized buttons, simple graphic cuts, and the boots. Rockin’ your over-the-knee boots with your retro dress will make you look like a modern day Twiggy.

SHEEPSKIN AND FUR

From curly sheep gilets in glorious, bold colours to abominable snow jackets turning models into (still gorgeous) monsters, a warm and fuzzy coat is your first essential buy of AW15. Statement shearling ruled at Lanvin and Roksanda, while Louis Vuitton and Stella McCartney made maxi faux furs thick enough to fight off that next polar vortex. Topshop Unique and Simone Rocha even lined their shoes with the stuff.

PATCHWORK

Lest you think we were done with the seventies—well, we’re not. Just look at the patchworked textures

at Etro, Chloé, or Valentino, where mixed media made for a truly big impact.

GLAM GEEKS

Gucci’s kooky-cool bookworm has a little Margot Tenenbaum about her, while Tommy Hilfiger’s varsity girl wears her team colours on her sleeve - literally. The only thing missing from Chloe’s professeur chic, meanwhile, is a couple of suede elbow patches. We’ll meet you in the library.

FINE FORM

If you can pull off a piece from this trend you will turn heads. It’s all about minimalistic block colours – mostly neutral – but with structure and contrast in design. Think fitted frocks, fluid trenches, pencil skirts contrasted with draped tops and origami-like.

A WINTER ROSE

This is all about the feminine in design, colour and texture. Pastels, lace and floral prints don’t make

you a wallflower. If this is your style you’ll find lots of options for you this season. Think lace dresses and skirts, vintage floral prints on dark backgrounds and pastel pieces that will add a pretty kind of power to your neutrals.

PRINT PERFECT

Graphic content prints are not just for spring-summer. Hooray for that. This season you’ll find everything from the previously mentioned florals to geometrics, bold colour splashes, monochromatic mixes and orientalstyle prints. Think a special occasion frock and printed pants and tops.

LINGERIE

Underwear as outerwear is not a new fashion concept. But it certainly was highly desirable this season. At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière’s sporty take on the style looked fresh, while Dolce & Gabbana once again proved they know how to work black lace like nobody’s business. Come next season, being caught “undressed” will be the height of sexy sophistication.

red carpet

ready

T

he most memorable beauty trends have started out on the red carpet, where rules are broken and trends are made. Even the hottest red carpet celebrities have flaws. Of course it’s their make-up artists who make it all the less noticeable! Now it’s time to spill some of their secrets so you can fake perfection too.

Flawless

It really is all about the base, and the red carpet sees a lot of those perfect canvases! Long-wear foundation and concealer application is the key to keeping flawless all night. The idea is to set your perfect base with setting powder. However beware, we’ve seen some not so fabulous celebrity shots where they have had a few

74 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 15

HAIR & BEAUTY

hiccups with their setting powder. Now, of course, these top celebs did not leave their house with globs of white powder showing on their face, it’s just the result of poorly blended translucent setting powder reacting to flash photography. Try to stick with a matt or satin matt finish foundation to avoid this.

Killer cheekbones

All make-up artists have their unique ways of defining those cheekbones! I love to use powders after I’ve applied foundation, whereas some artists will use a cream coverage under or over the base. Contouring is all about creating shadow and light to alter the shape of the face, maybe to give the illusion of higher cheekbones, a slimmer face or thinner nose. Different face shapes need different contouring or shaping, some will need more highlighting while others will use more contouring to help create the shape you are after. The red carpet sees its fair share of killer cheekbones. To make your cheekbones really stand out, use a large powder brush to sweep a loose face powder along the lower jaw, under where you would have applied the contour for the cheekbone.

High brow

The strong brow has been right in on the red carpet recently. Brows can completely alter the structure of your face. It’s so important that you pay attention when playing with your eyebrow thickness and colour so you fill them in properly. It can really enhance bone structure so it’s a great beauty tip to incorporate and appropriate for

the red carpet as well because it is such a polished finish.

Last word of advice

Play up your best asset and enhance your best features. Eyes, skin, lips, or cheeks, dress up your best feature and let it take centre stage. While achieving a flawless beauty

look is ultimately the end goal, just remember less is more. It’s all about choosing which features to play up! If one aspect is bold keep all other elements understated and elegant leaving your look not too overdone. Your make-up should have that somewhat effortlessness New York model thing going on.

Bangs are back in fashion this autumn and we´ve seen a whole host of celebs going for the chop recently. Take singer Ciara who debuted a lash length fringe and short bob at New York Fashion Week´s Givenchy Show. This look is oozes elegance and is a far cry from her hip-grazing tresses that she´s been sporting for the past year. Kate Middleton was recently snapped in her first public outing since Princess Charlotte´s christening with a shorter do and new side-sweeping fringe. Dubbed the “gringe”, or the “grown-out fringe” by hairdressers, it is a classic tried-and-tested style for new mothers such as Kate, that doesn´t require much styling. Despite the flurry of celebs opting for fringes be warned that they do seem to go in and out of fashion quicker than anything else.

HAIR & BEAUTY BRONDE BEAUTY

The ombre/balayage look seems to be fading in popularity these days for the more conservative “bronde” look. This is somewhere in between blonde and brunette and is more subtle than ombre. Check out Kim Murray´s hair – tennis star Andy Murray´s new wife. This is a low maintenance colour but effective and very flattering. This hue is extremely popular and not as damaging for the hair as the ice blondes and “granny greys” that were trending massively over the summer. Also it can literally suit anyone. Other celeb fans of the bronde look include Taylor Swift, Suki Waterhouse, Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Q: Maria thanks for chatting to us at Marbella Rocks Magazine. You’ve been into fitness and training for a long time but what was the main catalyst for you to decide to make the step into competitive bodybuilding? Maria: I have been into this sport for 18 years already, but my competition career started 3 years ago. It was actually my fiancé Steve who pushed me into competing as he saw my passion for this sport and he believed that I had what it takes to compete and be a champion. Q: You’ve had some fantastic success in the sport such as winning the Spanish championships in 2013, 1st place and Overall winner at the Spanish Cup in 2014, 3rd place finish at last year’s Arnold Classic Europe in Madrid and more recently took the title of Miss Olympia Fitness at the Amateur Olympia of Spain. How did it feel the moment you became champion and what’s next on your list of goals? Maria: To be honest you always hope to win but when you get to the competitions and see all the fit women you have to compete against, you don’t think you are going to win … but hope to get at least in the top 6. When you do win, it feels amazing. It makes all the suffering (dieting etc) worth your while and it gives you even more willpower to carry on. It takes away all the insecurity and you realise that you are actually good at what you are doing. My next goal now is to win my pro card and be able to compete at professional level. And for that you need to win an international competition and not only win your category but you need to win the overall (and win all the categories) which is very difficult. Q: On top of your recent achievements you have also gained sponsorship from a major supplement company. Are you finding that this extra support and exposure is helping to drive you on to the next goal? Maria: Yes, my sponsor is DY Nutrition which is owned by 6 times Mr Olympia Dorian Yates who as well will

HEALTH & FITNESS

be opening his new gym in Marbella very soon. My sponsor has helped me with all my preparations with his supplements and as well I get a lot of help and advice from the wife of Dorian Yates who is IFBB Pro Gal Yates. The supplements are very important in your training and depend in which stage in your preparation you are, you should use different products. One of my favourite products from DY Nutrition is the Black Bombs, quite simply the perfect competition–strength fat burner, designed for competitors who put everything on the line to remove fat without losing hard-earned muscle! Q: You have this year’s Arnold Classic Europe approaching as we go to press, will you be coming in as a favourite after last year’s top 3 and now being Miss Olympia Spain? And does something like that affect or adjust your mind set and confidence approaching the big day? Maria: It’s always better when people already have heard of you and they know that you have won other competitions before. That gives you a bit of an advantage I think. But to be honest for me that doesn’t affect my confidence. If I think that I have done my best and I like the way I look on the day of the competition,

for me that gives me the most confidence. Q: Finally, it can be an intimidating idea to consider and tough to know where to start. What advice would you give to any girls or guys that are considering competing? Maria: First of all, it is important to know that this is not only a sport…It’s a lifestyle. You practice this sport 24 hours a day and it takes a lot of sacrifice, discipline and a strong mind. It’s not easy at all. You really have to love this sport and the lifestyle to be able to sacrifice important things in your life for it. But once can do this, then it feels very good to see yourself in the best shape ever and it makes you feel proud of yourself that you really were able to do it and did it. My advice is, train hard, eat well and rest! PEET’S PROGRESS

Some of you who have followed my articles for a while might remember that as I was starting this column I was beginning my journey to become a Men’s Physique Fitness competitor. I’ve had an amazing although tough year in the time I have been writing and as we go to press I will have competed in my sixth contest of 2015. I’ve been fortunate enough to compete in Malaga, Seville, Glasgow and Birmingham this season where I was placed in the top five at the USN Bodypower Classic at the NEC. It’s been an amazing experience so far and my lifestyle has taken a dramatic change for the good, mentally and physically healthy, I have never been more focused.

84 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 15

I would recommend anyone who is into fitness and training to test yourself and give it a go. Bring on 2016. Here are some stage shots from this season below:

BEGIN TO VEGAN

A question I am hearing more and more is about switching to a Vegan diet and is it possible to build muscle and get into shape whilst eliminating meat and dairy. The answer is YES. Vegans tend to be animal rights activists or people with a strong affinity to animals and even former vegetarians that have made the step to remove animal products completely. But recently I am finding everyday meat eaters are being tempted by promises that Veganism is healthier and better for weight

loss. Let’s look at these points and list some great vegan sources of protein to include in your new life choice. While vegetarians eliminate meat, fish and poultry, vegans take it a step further, excluding all animal products – even dairy and eggs. So say goodbye to refried beans with lard, margarine made with whey and anything with gelatine, which comes from animal bones and hooves, too. Fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes will be your staples.

BUILDING MUSCLE

Plant based nutrition is known to improve long-term health and benefit animals and the environment, but many weight trainers hesitate to make this healthy lifestyle change due to one question: is it possible to build muscle? Let’s look at it this way. Take certain powerful herbivorous animals such as horses, oxen and gorillas. These demonstrate that meat is not essential for building strength and muscle mass. As with any diet or nutrition plan there are keys to building muscle. A good balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats with a weight training program is the plan. In the case of a vegan the hardest element to include is protein. To build muscle you will need a calorie surplus (eating more calories than you burn metabolically and through exercise) from healthy whole food sources like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans/nuts. Make sure you consume more of these

HEALTH & FITNESS

protein dense foods and steer clear of processed foods like fake meat products.

GOOD SOURCES OF PROTEIN INCLUDE Green Peas: Foods in the legume family are good sources of vegetarian protein, and peas are no exception: One cup contains 7.9 grams—about the same as a cup of milk. (For the record, women should get about 46 grams of protein per day, and men need about 56.) Quinoa: Most grains contain a small amount of protein, but quinoa— technically a seed—is unique in that it contains more than 8 grams per cup, including all nine essential amino acids that the body needs for growth and repair, but cannot produce on its own. Nuts and nut butter: All nuts contain both healthy fats and protein, making them a valuable part of a plant-based diet. But because they are high in calories—almonds, cashews, and pistachios for example, all contain 160 calories and 5 or 6 grams of protein per ounce— choose varieties that are raw or dry roasted. Nut butters, like peanut and almond butter, are also a good way to get protein. Beans: There are many different varieties of beans—black, white, pinto, heirloom etc.—but one thing they all have in common is their high amounts of protein. Two cups of kidney beans, for example, contain

about 26 grams, around the same as 100g Beef. Chickpeas: Chickpeas are also known as Garbanzo Beans and are a member of the legume family. They contain 7.3 grams of protein in just half a cup, and are also high in fibre and low in calories. Tempeh and tofu: Foods made from soybeans are some of the highest vegetarian sources of protein: Tempeh and tofu, for example, contain about 15 and 20 grams per half cup, respectively. These are also the most calorie dense plant foods, which will make it easier to create that calorie surplus. As for supplementing protein, there are several great protein options based such as Vegan Protein products available from most online supplement such as Plant Fusion and SunWarrior. Fats: For fats, try and keep to whole food based fats like avocados, nuts, and seeds and although expensive, Coconut oil is a great source of healthy fats. Carbs: Fill out the rest of your diet with ample complex carbohydrates from foods like oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes and vegetables. These will be high in fibre and help to keep you full for longer. In terms of micronutrients, a vegan diet is actually more susceptible to being nutritionally poor. A vegan diet is naturally low in calcium, vitamin D, iron, vitamin B12, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. Therefore, if you follow a vegan diet it is essential that you get

enough of these nutrients through specific vegan food sources, and may even need to take additional supplements.

PEET’S TIP

TRY REINVENTING YOUR FAVOURITES: GO FOR BLACK BEAN INSTEAD OF STEAK BURRITOS, OR IF CHICKEN STIRFRY IS YOUR THING, USE TOFU INSTEAD OF POULTRY. AND AS FAR AS VEGAN DIET BEING HEALTHIER, RECENT STUDIES INDICATED THAT THE AVERAGE VEGAN DIET IS HIGHER IN VITAMIN C AND FIBRE, AND LOWER IN SATURATED FAT THAN ONE CONTAINING MEAT. IN ADDITION, STATISTICS SHOW THAT VEGANS HAVE A LOWER BMI (HEIGHTTO-WEIGHT RATIO) THAN MEAT EATERS – IN OTHER WORDS, THEY ARE LEANER. AN EATING PATTERN HEAVY ON FRUITS AND VEGGIES, BUT LIGHT ON SATURATED FAT AND SALT, IS CONSIDERED THE BEST WAY TO KEEP CHOLESTEROL AND BLOOD PRESSURE IN CHECK AND KEEP HEART DISEASE AT BAY.

BOTTOM LINE

Eat well, train hard and get lots of rest. With this be sure to add a steady source of the above protein rich options into your Vegan diet and enjoy a meat free, muscle building and mentally and physically rich lifestyle.

GASTRONOMY

RESTAURANT REVIEW

THE HAIRy lemon

A

lthough the name doesn´t automatically conjure up thoughts of fine dining and Michelin stars, you really can´t beat the Hairy Lemon If you are after delicious homemade dishes served in a relaxed and friendly environment. Situated in the beautiful Plaza de los Naranjos Square in the heart of Sotogrande´s marina, the Hairy Lemon serves some of the best food in the area. Billed as a gastro pub, the menu certainly reflects this, with all the usual hearty pub grub you´d expect from a British inspired menu – but with an international twist. There´s not many places you can have steak and Guinness pie alongside a Thai green cod fillet and coconut infused balsamic rice… but you can at the good old Hairy, as locals affectionately call it. The Hairy Lemon is also known to be adventurous with their cuisine, consistently adding new and varied dishes to their menu. Head chef and co-owner Lorenc Hunda, regularly tries out these new dishes on their Friday night €1 tapas evening. The night draws in all the locals and there is always live music and the latest sporting events shown. Great for October if you are a Rugby World Cup fan. “It´s great to introduce new dishes alongside firm favourites,” Lorenc said. “It keeps us interesting and the ones that are the most popular will go on the main menu. Our customers dictate what we sell and we have a great rapor with them – so we are able to give them exactly what they

want.” On the advice of the head chef, we went for the classic tapas dishes of teriyaki duck breast on a bed of wasabi coleslaw, lamb cutlets with port reduction gravy, patatas bravas and mini cajun chicken burgers. The portion sizes were generous for tapas which was good (as were starving!) and some Spanish establishments tapas come on saucer sized platters – which is not good, in our opinion! The duck and lamb were both extremely tender and the flavours from the teriyaki sauce and port infused jus were to die for. Rich and full of flavour – which is exactly what you want from tapas.

Filling you up but leaving you wanting for more. The Cajun burger was delicious, a bit of spice but not too much, with mayonnaise, fresh lettuce, tomato and good old chunky chips to accompany. The sweet patatas bravas were excellent too, with garlic crisps shavings on top with plenty of smokey tomato salsa drizzled on top. When the main dishes arrived we were more than pleasantly surprised. Served beautifully on large dishes, the Steak and Guiness pie and Thai cod were delicious. The Hairy Lemon, which is adjoined to the very popular neighbouring restaurant, The

GASTRONOMY Lemon is the perfect destination for families, couples or groups. Couples would probably prefer the Lemon side of the restaurant, which has recently undergone renovation but kept its hard wood floor, pale blue walls and art deco fixtures for a more classic appeal. It´s slightly quieter here too if sport and singers are on next door - a peaceful retreat for a candlelit supper. Families are the name of the game at the Hairy Lemon and with a huge open air courtyard there´s plenty of room for children to run around and let off steam while parents can enjoy the ambience undisturbed. Mum and Dad readers will know how good that feels (!). With 150 covers you will undoubtedly have a good time coming here in large groups too - there´s a real laid back atmosphere and plenty of entertainment with a fun crowd, good music and pool tables inside. Run by husband and wife team Lorenc and Lizzie (with Lizzie´s charismatic father Bill) and an amazing front of house team, you will not get a warmer welcome and friendlier service than at The Hairy Lemon. Since opening in 2010, The Hairy Lemon has become a great antidote to the sometimes stuffiness of bar and restaurant giant, Ke, which dominates a large portion of the quaint Sotogrande marina. If you are a resident and haven´t yet tried the relaxed charm of The Hairy Lemon and sister restaurant The Lemon, you must. It really is one of Sotogrande´s rare treasures. To reserve your table at the Hairy Lemon or Lemon Sotogrande call +34 956 790 124 or email: thehairylemonsoto@yahoo. com. Open from 9am to late. The Hairy Lemon and The Lemon offer an extensive breakfast menu and lunch as well as smoothies, juices, cakes and pastries. They also do catering for private parties. To see more of the work of Pedro Jaen’s visit his website at www.pedrojaen.com or to book a meeting/consultation with Pedro Jaen email pedrojaen2@gmail.com.

HOME & INTERIORS

Q: SO WHAT MADE YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? Photography is something that has always been present in my life, both my grandfather and my father were photographers. My father taught me from a very early age the wonderful world of the image and I have been hooked ever since. Q: WHAT MAKES YOUR PHOTOS AND ART DIRECTION SO UNIQUE? I always try to find something that motivates me: an attitude, special lighting ... or just to capture that magic moment that ordinarily passes people by. Q: WHAT MAKES “A PERFECT PICTURE” IN YOUR OPINION? For me the perfect picture is there in every single shot. Each and every session becomes like a challenge for me as I am always searching for that perfect shot. Q: WHAT IS THE HARDEST SHOOT YOU’VE EVER DONE? The most recent shoot with you guys was pretty tough!

Doing 20 outfit changes and capturing very risqué poses with 3 seminaked models and zero lighting on the News Café Penthouse rooftop bar whilst the manager was hurrying us up to leave!! All good fun though! Q: YOU ALSO DO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY, IS THIS SOMETHING YOU LIKE? It´s a discipline where I have a lot of experience and I feel very comfortable doing. It´s taught me to improvise quickly in a disciplined manner and especially to be operative before any difficult situation that may arise. As it invariably does on wedding days! Q: WHAT MAKES YOU TICK? A gesture, a pose, a light ... something different and unique. Q: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? I have many. One which I am currently developing for Olivia Valere Nightclub and will come to light very soon... i´ll keep you Marbella Rockers updated!

PSYCHOLOGY

IT’S OK TO ASK FOR HELP

F

or this month’s psychology column I interviewed Barbara Orefici, therapist and specialist in anxiety, addiction and eating disorders, to explore the stigma around our need to uphold a cultural image of bravado, strength, leadership and capability and the price we pay in denying the truth; that sometimes we do need help and support. A: Barbara, why do you think we hide our suffering behind a façade of capability and strength? B: We create masks and convenient truth’s to disguise our fear and pain, because it seems easier than addressing it.

MEET ANTONIA BEHAN, MARBELLA ROCKS NEW PSYCHOLOGY COLUMNIST. ANTONIA IS A FULLY QUALIFIED PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COACH. 92 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 15

A: Why do you think men find it harder to show their vulnerability? B: Actually, I do not believe this is specific to men. I just find that men take longer to admit it. It is interesting that about 70% of men, who bring women for therapy, end up in therapy themselves; they needed to be the protector walking through the door, to make it safe for them to enter. A: Why have we cultivated a culture of false strength, when we could have built real strength? B: When we don’t feel okay, our brain naturally seeks pleasure. In response, we turn to what we know, such as food, alcohol, drugs, exercise, or even work, using the adrenalin buzz to mask uncomfortable feelings. This is because we want to feel good, and avoid facing unpleasant feelings or our fears, which can create immense anxiety; pleasure feels much nicer. A: This quick fix culture is hard to change. B: This is precisely why change doesn’t happen and why people do not end up in my therapy room until the pleasure habit has become so destructive than they are forced to address it. A: If only people asked for help sooner, to avoid all this suffering. Why is it so hard to ask for help? B: It is about awareness and education. We have so much information about the dangers of smoking and how to eat well, but so little awareness about seeking psychological and mind support, or the potential disorder that can arise from too much stress or anxiety. They have this in the United States. They even have relaxation pods for time out. They have psychologists in offices and schools to help to educate people on how to develop healthy minds and behaviours, to prevent problems arising. We need education to teach people how to deal with their challenges, to face fears and embrace powerful emotions in healthy ways; essentially we need to give people the awareness and the tools to love, like and believe in themselves more, because when we have this, we want to be healthy and we believe we can manage, or we seek help because we care enough about wanting to be healthy

PSYCHOLOGY

and happy. A: Why don’t we provide this education in schools and offices? B: Because it is easy to deny what is unseen. Only when it becomes visible; when drug and alcohol addiction cause poor performance, relationships breakdown, and there is a need for hospitalisation, when anorexia creates a heart attack or suicide attempt, when anxiety prevents the ability to function, and when upholding a brave front for too long brings a mental break down, do we pay attention. By this point, a person has been suffering so long that it will take a lot of time and money to recover and heal. There is a huge price on denial. A: We know so much about what alcohol and drugs can do, we know what high pressure living can do to someone long term and yet often we do nothing to change our ways? B: This is because people do not believe it will happen to them, and because change is hard; we want to believe it won’t happen to us. . A: What can we do about this? B: We need to create campaigns to spread awareness so that when people are not okay; men, women, parents,

and children, it’s okay to admit it and to ask for help and support. Anxiety is growing like a cancer in our world. We need awareness on this now and we need to provide the tools and knowledge to help people manage anxiety in healthy ways, and not be scared to reveal the truth. We all suffer, it is part of life, and it is okay; we learn, and we heal and we grow from it; it can be a beautiful thing, but, if not managed in healthy ways, it can become very ugly. A: How do we begin to overcome the quick fix culture? B: Through understanding that a quick fix today can mean a lifetime of suffering. Facing suffering, and admitting we are not happy is not easy, but it can be healed in weeks and months. We are here, as psychologists, with the knowledge and experience to help people with this. It would be a shame not to use our knowledge, experience, care and support. Barbara Orefici graduated in Psychology at Boston University in 1995. She holds a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology and is experienced in supporting children and teenagers with learning disabilities, and behavioural or impulse control disorder, Autism, low-self-esteem, and anxiety. Y

ou may have seen this hashtag trending on social media recently and been shocked (or pleasantly surprised) by the amount of naked flesh on show. Well it´s all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and so far over 500 game nominated people have stripped to their undies, bringing in a total of just over £10,000 for Macmillan. #Bantsinyourpants is the brainchild of Life on Marbs star Lina Hodgkins and her aim is to raise £20,000 for cancer after finding out her best friend Leanne is

battling a rare form of the disease. Lina said, “I can’t wave a magic wand and cure it, but I didn’t want to sit around feeling depressed and helpless so have come up with something fun, silly and empowering that will hopefully make her laugh! One of my favourite sayings is ‘when was the last time you did something for the first time?’ so I stripped off and did an underwear shoot recently - aged 54. I’m no supermodel, but I am happy in my own skin. We should all love the bodies

we have been given, lumps and bumps and all. One day it could all change, and the bit of cellulite you once were stressing over will be so insignificant.” The idea is you get nominated, strip, take a fun selfie and donate an amount to www.justgiving. com/bantsinyourpants or text BANT88 to 70070. To keep the cause going you are expected to nominate 3 more friends to do the challenge. Go on its so worth it!! Cancer affects us all and this is a great cause that could eventually go global.

ASTROLOGY

MARBELLA ROCKS ASTROLOGY FORECAST OCTOBER 2015

Aries

Gemini

Leo

21 MAR – 20 APR Lasting love is on your mind this month Aries, as your partnership sector gets lit up by sparkling planetary activity promising spectacular new beginnings. It’s time to make that love dream a reality with those coupled up embarking on a new phase of closeness while singles could attract someone with lasting potential. The same goes for work opportunities. It’s no longer about working to live, but working in a way that truly sustains your mind, body and soul. Don’t be afraid to take on more responsibility as you have what it takes to fill that role and get the job done. Time for some proactive leadership in all areas of your life. Chart your course and know the destination is in sight.

22 MAY – 21 JUNE You’re seeking to make changes this month - and the universe responds to the vibe you are sending out. A chance encounter could signal the start of a new romance while others may find a way to get noticed professionally. One thing is certain now - you’ll be able to create just the right impression in any situation you find yourself. The places you end up and the people you meet are all a response to your yearning for positive change. Just bear in mind however that often opportunity when it arrives, doesn’t look exactly the way we thought it would. The key to success is knowing that all paths lead to where you want to go. So even if that offer looks like it’s taking a different path - my advice is to take it anyway and remember that the journey is the goal.

24 JULY – 23 AUG Business plans especially those that involve others such as partners or collaborators, get the green light after the first week of October. What you’ve been working on or towards could be about to pay off for you if you’ve been prepared to take the long view on investment of your time, money and talents. You could now experience the material benefits of committing to a vision whether its your own or that of the company you work for. In fact, the company you keep this month has a profound influence on your future success whether it is your employer or those you choose to associate with. Remember that we can be judged by the actions of those we are seen with so ensure that friends and contacts reflect your core values. Be seen with the right crowd now - and together you could really end up going places - and ending up in some five star ones too.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

21 APR – 20 MAY Changes around finances may preoccupy you at the start of the month as your income could fluctuate or you could be faced with an unexpected expense. However, this is not likely to prevent you from enjoying yourself now. Events could propel you into the personal or professional spotlight - or even both - and if money or lack thereof is a problem, when it comes to enjoying yourself, you may even encounter someone prepared to pick up the tab. No matter what is going on with your bank account the key to this month is to project a positive attitude and a millionaire’s mind-set even if you’re not sure where your next penny is coming from. You’ll attract whatever it is you need - abundance or that new lover, just by being you.

22 JUNE – 23 JULY Good news or a business breakthrough could be on its way this month, Cancer. You may also be travelling for business and/or pleasure. What you hear, or the path you’re now on, is about to propel you into a bigger life experience on some level. Even if you’re staying put this month, the world may come looking for you in unexpected ways that have hidden potential. Luck is on your side now so why not take a chance on your feelings or your own talents? There’s a feeling of optimism and expansion in the air so please don’t allow anything you hear or discover about someone else dampen this. Although some may argue ignorance is bliss, in this instance you really are better off knowing the truth.

24 AUG – SEPT 3 I don’t think there’s a sign out there who doesn’t wish they were you right now, Virgo. Your once-in-12 year expansion in all areas cycle doesn’t give you a Hall Pass from getting the job done. It does however increase your ability to succeed and possibly beyond your wildest dreams. That big, breathtaking love which starts off with you instantly recognising that the other party shares your hopes, dreams, values and desire to make passion last, could be just one part of this. Whatever it is you want to achieve - and if you’re torn between two desires it’s the one that makes you breathless and your heart beat faster, then pour your passion, energy and determination into getting it right now. You’ve everything you need at your fingertips to get anything you want. Don’t waste this period by dreaming and not doing.

112 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 15

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

24 SEPT – 23 OCT Who or what is working for or against you this month Libra? Fate, karma and timing all play a part in events now and the past may even catch up with you in some way. This could be in the form of someone you have known in the past or feel you have! This can be a time of rewards especially if you are willing to work at something behind the scenes as opposed to being in the spotlight. You often crave stardom or a starring role - in your job or else in someone else’s life. Rewards are on offer now but of the more subtle kind - in knowing that you have a contribution to make but you’ll be content to beaver away in the background or else you’ll just be secure in the knowledge that someone can’t do without you. When it comes to continuing to struggle to get something however, you’ll receive the wisdom of knowing you can’t do any more and success will happen on its own terms. That’s a gift in its own right.

23 NOV – 21 DEC You are looking closely at your professional successes so far and also how those closest to you play a role in this. When it comes to career moves this month, you’re in a position to impress people with your smart and business savvy. Dress, act and speak the part and whatever you do - don’t bluff or pretend to know the answer when you don’t. ‘I’m sorry, I’ll need to find that out and get back to you’ sounds professional and ensures your reputation stays intact. Don’t make promises you can’t keep - and this also applies to your personal life as well. If you want to be taken seriously then you need to first show that you can be. This month offers you a hand up or the ability to smash glass floors or ceilings - more by using an iron first in a velvet glove than a hammer. A lover who supports your ambitions and even invests in you on some level makes all the difference between half-baked success and soaring skyward.

21 JAN – 19 FEB Remember, if we want something new in our lives, usually we have to let go of something first. There’s no room for bolting on the new to a structure that already exists in some way - as you won’t get anything that’s built to last. If we want a relationship for example, we have to make room to accommodate it in terms of time to get to know the person, letting go of the past and eventually making room in our hearts and our homes. Something may come to an end or just change radically this month and if this occurs, you need to understand that this is what is happening now. However, endings or changes really will make way for something better to take their place. Others could literally be the recipients of someone else’s generosity. Why not voluntarily clear a space in your life and make room for something to come in and fill it? Love just like nature, abhors a vacuum.

Scorpio

Capricor

Pisces

24 OCT – 22 NOV Benefits through friends - and yes, friends and connections with all kinds of benefits to offer you, will feature this October. Your social life expands and could produce a potential lover as well as people who could be in a position to help you in other areas as well. Important new connections can be made so accept all invitations. You could even attend a few large scale events and there’s like-minded company to be found in a crowd as your kind of people will just seem to gravitate towards you. Major inroads can be made towards long term goals - perhaps with one coming tantalisingly within reach. Peak experiences in close relationships allow you to see the future for you as a couple - or not as the case may be. When it comes to love you desire a deeper, more spiritual connection. If your present partner is unable to connect with you on this level, you’ll attract the one who can.

22 DEC – 20 JAN Time to marshal your considerable resources and capacity to see the job not only through but done properly, Capricorn. You may encounter opposition to your plans at the start of the month, but knowing you this will only fuel your determination to succeed and find a solution. You won’t brook any interference, either and will be ready to defend your position and your ideas if necessary. Your determination may earn you the support and respect of others in the process. Singles could find someone who shares their values and who is looking for something serious. Ask yourself first if that’s what you’re ready for? There’s the feeling of things being locked down for the long term and if you’re not ready for that, then better to acknowledge that up front rather than disappoint others. Remember - lovers are mirrors and they reflect your own potential right back to you. Why not choose to live up to that?

20 FEB – 20 MAR A once-in-12-year aspect in your partnership sector could bring you the person of your dreams or just enable you to see you’re already with them. Whatever form you dreamed love would take it could arrive and be bigger and better than anything your imagination could come up with. Partnerships of all kinds are favoured now and no matter who you’re seeking, put those feelers out there as they are probably already looking for you. This applies to business partners, collaborators and activity partnerships too, with you either finding the perfect buddy or else existing double-acts could be looking at a big win or positive outcome of a venture. Whatever your relationship status this month, explore how coupling up on some level - even if it’s just finding someone to go walking with after work, can bring you closer to feeling so complete you don’t know how you’ve been going it alone for so long.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP? A singing nun. Seriously!!! … I had a couple of years in a Catholic school, I wanted to be like my teacher when I was 7, and I loved the Sound of Music! BEST CHARACTER TRAITS? Openness and generosity. Yet it seems it can be seen as my worst traits in such a small town. WORST HABIT? Being a perfectionist. FRIDAY NIGHT OUT OR SUNDAY DAY IN? Has to be both! WHAT´S THE BEST THING ABOUT MARBELLA? The sun and sea on your doorstep.

Julie Campbell, the glamorous proprietor of new, chic Marbella bar and restaurant, Mos Eisley, took time out of her busy schedule to talk to Marbella Rocks about dairy cows, singing nuns and exceptional kissers!

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE THREE THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? A strong, intelligent, funny man, alcohol distilling equipment and a dairy cow (for milk & cheese and if I get really hungry – steak!) IF YOU COULD PERPETUATE A MYTH ABOUT YOU WHAT WOULD IT BE? That I was Julia Roberts’ body double in Pretty Woman. I wasn´t – but I was Elle Macpherson´s in Sirens. Everyone thought I was Julia´s which caused quite a stir when I became a ‘WAG’ on the International Pro golf circuit. WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE? Julia Roberts… obviously! WHO´S YOUR IDEAL DINNER PARTY GUESTS? People with opposing religious beliefs would be entertaining…. so, Jesus and the Dalai Lama. Plus a bit of the arts, Jack Johnson, Rhianna, Audrey Hepburn, Leonardo Da Vinci. Politics; Obama, a royal, Prince Harry, and sport, Roger Federer and for sure my best friend Corri from Australia. BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN?

WORST THING? A bit far from my homeland Australia….although is there anything not to love?

“Don´t worry too much about decisions you make in your life, you can change directions, I believe in you, and think you will always land on your feet.” My Dad said that when I was a young adult, and he was right. He spurred me on to take a more challenging path and make some spontaneous decisions. And yes, somehow I have always landed on my feet and I am happy with my life. (thanks Dad!) IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE? A dolphin. I love the sea, I scuba dive, they are a very social, intelligent, kind species. Just how I like to be. MOST EMBARRASSING ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE? A headband from the eighties. I honestly believed it looked good and did numerous photoshoots in it. Ooops. WHAT ALL THE MEN WANT TO KNOW, ARE YOU SINGLE? Yes. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A MAN? An exceptional kisser and kind, laughing eyes.

There’s mum’s ‘high tea’ in the afternoons with homework help as well. WHAT ABOUT FOR THE ADULTS AND THE EVENINGS? We have a very cool outdoor terrace in the front, made of rustic plush sofas with a fabulous cocktail menu and chilled music. We are large enough to include all sports fans as we have a massive state of the art curved TV at the bar to show all major sporting events. We also have themed nights each month.
