Contemporary at Blue Star Opens

Three New

Exhibitions Exploring

Colonialism and Borders

We are excited to share information about these three exhibitions that delve themes of colonialism and borders, topics that are particularly relevant for us as folks that live on what was once indigenous land. The persistent impact and presence of colonialism are highlighted in the Center of Unfinished Business, while the exhibitions by Leeanna Chipana and Cheng Xinhao further this important conversation.

On View: July 5–October 6, 2024

at Contemporary at Blue Star | 116 Blue Star

The Contemporary at Blue Star is excited to announce three new exhibitions, The C&’s Center of Unfinished Business, Kaysaypac: Portraits and Figures by Leeanna Chipana, and Cheng Xinhao’s Silver…and Other Elements, the exhibitions weave an unavoidable thread that sparks conversation around the history of colonialism, its presence in contemporary life, and encourages education and dialogue.

The C&s Center of Unfinished Business

Contemporary is thrilled to partner with C&, a multimedia platform for contemporary visual arts, to present the Center of Unfinished Business, a reading room that encapsulates an array of books that explore the persistence of colonialism in various ways, from its origins to how it effects people and places today. You’ll find texts on the way land and culture have been forcibly stripped from native people due to colonialism alongside texts that explore how empire-building also connects to fashion, 21st century capitalism, and more.

Launched in 2017, the Reading Room has traveled to institutions around the world. As it travels, the room integrates books from each of its host venues (and their collaborators), who add text that is relevant to the place the Reading Room inhabits. For the Contemporary’s iteration of this installation, we have partnered with the Guadalupe

Cultural Arts Center Latino Bookstore to include texts that touch on the themes of colonialism and borders that are present in the exhibitions in the surrounding galleries. To reinforce that the discourse and actions perpetuating colonialism are “unfinished,” the layout of the Reading Room is meant to reflect the discomfort of this reality. The books are not organized by any type of category, there are no chairs in the space, and there is no clear method of where to begin or end when interacting with the material. Included in this installation is a photograph of artist Cruz Ortiz’s vintage printing press, purchased from Munguia Printers Inc., a West Side institution and significant player in spreading the message of Mexican American civil rights since its opening in 1934 (now closed). Printing presses alongside printmakers have historically played a substantial role in disseminating information, particularly as an accessible means of relaying messages to the masses. The representation of this press in the Reading Room serves as a reminder of the power of the press—both as a tool for the oppressed and as a means of oppression.

Kaysaypac: Portraits

and Figures by

Born in Long Island, New York to an immigrant Quechuan-Peruvian father and American mother, Leeanna Chipana draws from her Quechuan and American identity by incorporating Incan, Aztec, and Mayan iconography with classical European oil painting techniques and approaches.

The blending and blurring of indigenous figures and Western techniques is an effort of disrupting colonial erasure by placing Indigenous-Latinx figures at the forefront of a very Euro-centric style of painting. Spanish colonial paintings of the 18th Century depicted a Spanish and Indigenous couple with their mixed child in a series of works known as pinturas de castas or caste paintings, which at first glance appear to represent the intermingling of people and culture. However, these works were used as a racial taxonomy and profiling, granting greater personhood to children born of a specific mix of parentage. In other words, the more European, the better social and racial class the sitter belonged to.

Chipana’s portraits remove this comparison and create a world in which at this time in history, indigenous peoples are not shown in comparison to their European counterparts, rather it asserts their presence in the past and today.

The exhibition title, Kaysaypac (pronounced cow-say-pak), a nod to Chipana’s Quechuan-Peruvian heritage, is a phrase often used while making a toast or a cheers and translates to “to live/to life.”

Further cementing the presence of indigenous peoples, this sentiment incorporated into the title is a dedication to the descendants of the Incans continuing to live in community, surviving colonialism and violence.

Cheng Xinhao

Silver…and Other Elements

In this four-channel film, Cheng Xinhao investigates the Mang people’s (the indigenous people living at the border of Vietnam and China) adaptation to shifting borders and changing systems. To explore this mov-

ing borderline and the migration of its people, Xinhao follows the fluctuating use of currency.

In his artist statement, Xinhao states, “The Mang people had to constantly adapt to shifting borders and spaces, and the accompanying changes in discourse and symbolic systems, as the relations between China and Vietnam evolved. A striking example is the use of coins: during the Qing dynasty, the Mang people used copper coins made by the Qing government, while with the

occupation of Vietnam by the French colonialists, the Piastre, a silver coin issued by France for trade in Southeast Asia, became the dominant currency there. With the re-independence of Vietnam in the mid-twentieth century and the establishment of the new China, the local currency changed further. Interestingly, however, the silver dollar has somehow survived in the Mang community: no longer as money but taken out of its original symbolic system and given a new meaning through new practices.”

These shifting borders create a state of in-betweenness and displacement—a sentiment many border communities around the world still struggle with, and yet adapt to. Xinhao’s video raises the question: what symbols are appropriated and survive under new regimes? Will they be incorporated into existing systems, or will new forms be created?

Retiring early is a dream for many individuals seeking to enjoy more leisure time, pursue personal passions, or simply escape the daily grind of work. However, early retirement requires careful planning and consideration to help provide financial stability and fulfillment in the long term. Whether you’re contemplating an early retirement or already on the path toward it, here are key factors to consider to help you make informed decisions and achieve your retirement goals.

Financial Preparedness

Early retirement hinges on financial preparedness, so it’s essential to assess your financial situation carefully. Determine your retirement expenses, including housing, healthcare, travel, and leisure activities, and estimate how much income you’ll need to cover these costs.

Consider factors such as inflation, healthcare expenses, and unexpected emergencies when calculating your retirement nest egg. Aim to save enough to sustain your desired lifestyle throughout retirement, factoring in a longer retirement horizon if you’re retiring early.

Savings and Investments

Building a robust savings and investment portfolio is crucial for early retirement success. Maximize contributions to tax-advantaged retirement accounts such as 401(k)s, IRAs, and HSAs to take advantage of compounding growth and tax benefits. Consider diversifying your investments across asset classes such as stocks, bonds, real estate, and alternative investments to help manage risk and potentially maximize returns. Regularly review and adjust your investment strategy to align with your retirement goals and risk tolerance.

Debt Management

Managing debt is critical when planning for early retirement. Prioritize paying off high-interest debt such as credit cards and loans to reduce financial burdens and free up cash flow for retirement savings. Consider refinancing or consolidating debt to lower interest rates and accelerate debt repayment. Avoid taking on new debt and maintain a disciplined approach to spending to achieve financial freedom and flexibility in retirement.

Healthcare Coverage

Healthcare costs can be a significant expense in retirement, particularly for early retirees who may not yet be eligible for Medicare. Investigate healthcare coverage options, including COBRA, individual health insurance plans, or employer-sponsored retiree health benefits. Consider the cost of premiums, deductibles, copayments, and out-of-pocket expenses when evaluating healthcare coverage options. Additionally, explore health savings accounts (HSAs) as a tax-advantaged way to save for medical expenses in retirement.

Social Security and Pension Benefits

While early retirees may not have access to full Social Security benefits immediately, understanding your eligibility and options is essential for retirement planning. Determine your projected Social Security benefits based on your earnings history and retirement age, and consider the impact of claiming benefits early versus delaying to maximize payouts. If you’re entitled to a pension, review the terms and conditions of your pension plan and explore payout options that align with your retirement goals.

Lifestyle and Leisure Activities

Early retirement offers the opportunity to pursue passions, hobbies, and leisure activities that bring joy and fulfillment. Consider how you envision spending your time in retirement and factor these lifestyle choices into your retirement planning. Whether it’s traveling, volunteering, pursuing hobbies, or spending time with loved ones, prioritize activities that enhance your quality of life and bring meaning to your retirement years. Retiring early is an achievable goal with careful planning, discipline, and foresight. Consult with financial advisors or retirement planners to develop a personalized retirement strategy tailored to your unique goals, circumstances, and aspirations. With proper planning and execution, early retirement can be a rewarding chapter in your life journey.

Falling For Small Business: Spice Up Your Enterprise This

Autumn

As the leaves change color and pumpkin spice everything fills the air, it’s time for small business owners to embrace the fall vibes. Whether you’re running a restaurant or bar on the St. Mary’s Strip, a boutique in Alamo Heights, or any other kind of local gem at The Pearl, The Rim or South Town, this season offers the perfect opportunity to get creative and bring a little autumn magic to your enterprise.

Whether it’s a few fall-themed accents or an all-out transformation, customers love walking into a space that feels festively thematic. Bonus points if you throw in a “sweater weather” playlist and staff cardigans on fall days that are not 90+ degrees. Decorate your space with some fall flair. Put your staff in the fall mood by giving your storefront or office lobby some love! Think garland strands, autumn-themed signage, pumpkins, faux branch arrangements, ambient lighting, scented candles, or throw pillows and blankets.

Autumn is also the perfect time to host a little customer appreciation gathering. Think “Sip & Shop,” a harvest market, or even a spiked eggnog meet & greet. These kinds of events not only draw in foot traffic but also create a buzz (no pun intended) around your business.

Don’t forget about Small Business Saturday on November 20, 2024! Use this time to attract holiday shoppers by offering special deals or bundling seasonal products or services. It’s a great way to kick off the end-ofyear shopping season.

So wrap yourself in flannel and sip on some cider while you pray for the cooler weather to finally arrive in San Antonio, and get your prospects to fall in love with your small business all over again this fall!

BLANCA DITTMAN

I come from a small town called Plainview in the panhandle of Texas and at the age of 21 I decided to take this big move by myself away from my family to pursue my education in Communications. I graduated from San Antonio College in 2016 with my Degree in Radio, Television & Broadcasting and strong back ground in Events and Marketing. I began working for Univision 41 shortly after. While working for Univision I received the Unico Awards from co-workers who selected me as quarterly employee of the year my first year in, and I was the first to receive Best Mentorship in my department as an Activations Technician with our local events ,promotions & live radio activations.

It was such a great experience representing five local radio stations & 2 television stations with an amazing team I considered family. When COVID 19 hit in 2020, the company unfortunately had a mandatory lay off and being that I worked interpersonally with our clients, I was one of them. During 2020 I was a bit surprised and saddened by this like many but shortly after I took a turn back to my other passion and took an online course to receive my Lash Technician certification. Then from there eventually received my P.M.A (permanent make up artist)certification etc. I carefully worked from home after the pandemic as a beautician & continued to work for selective local busi

nesses on the side helping with marketing. My passion grew for both and I was able to adapt & find a balance between the two. I’m now honored and excited to be a part of the events and marketing team with Retama Park Race track in Selma, TX. I’m able to balance the things I love to do. Retama park is owned by Retama Development Corporation and managed by Penn Entertainment. There are many and new exciting changes taking place, we are getting more involved with the community and there will be more local events & future projects in the works. I’m thrilled for what’s to come. When one door closes , two more can open, it’s about finding balance. Not losing sight of my personal dreams & goals with another few projects I’ll be focusing on my free time. As a wife, a mother, an entrepreneur & a professional working woman of many trades, I’m finally confident in what I want to do & not settling for just one thing. With the right mind

set, people, support & balance I believe all is possible, and we are the only ones holding our selves back when we don’t take chances. With my education, certifications and experience, I’m ready to take my goals to the next level. Through God all things are possible.

A year later, she met and signed with her mother agent, Lari Nelson at NFG, to pursue her dreams. Josalyn continued on to Teen Universe San Antonio 2022, Miss San Antonio Teen USA 2022- 4th Runner Up & People’s Choice, 2023- Teen Congeniality & People’s Choice, 2024- 3rd Runner Up.

It’s an infinite form of expression that renews itself in different ways. It can be beautiful, tragic, romantic and much more. Nothing would honor me more if I could impact the world with my own mark through that.”

Josalyn will graduate this upcoming Spring from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Merchandising and a minor in Mass Communication at the age of 19. She intends to utilize her anticipated degree to advertise and market brands in a positive direction not just for our community but for our youth. She states, “There are 3 things that I take with me everyday. First, being unique is our most beautiful asset. Secondly, you do not know where you are going unless you know where you came from. Lastly, one smile makes the world smile. I want to thank my family and Ms Lari for their undying support. It has helped lead me to find my true self. Be confident in who I am, and grow into the person I am today. If not for that, I would have not stepped out of the timid shell of my younger self. If it hadn’t been for all the support and lessons I have experienced, my voice may never have been heard. Not only to sing but also as an advocate for our youth.”

Lazy K Bar Straight Bourbon Whiskey embodies the rugged elegance of Montana’s pioneering spirit. S.A. Monthly Editors had the pleasure of meeting with two of the brand’s founders, actor Cole Hauser and beverage industry veteran Britt West, at Bohanan’s in San Antonio for an intimate discussion about the brand’s history and its Coveted introduction to the Texas market, making it the only state outside of Montana where this bourbon is available in stores and restaurants.

Hauser, as charming in person as he is on screen, shared the inspiration behind this premium bourbon, named after one of the oldest cattle ranches in Montana. Lazy K Bar Straight Bourbon Whiskey captivates with its deep, complex nose—rich with caramel, toffee, and aged honey, evolving into hints of clove, cinnamon, and apple. On the palate, it offers a round, balanced sweetness with flavors of sweet oak, honey, and a subtle touch of leather and pecan nougat, all leading to a smooth, warm finish that lingers with caramelized oak and malted grain. At 92 proof, this 8-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon delivers both strength and luxury, a fitting tribute to the heritage of Montana and the vision of its founders Britt West, Cole Hauser and David Leuschen. Lazy K Bar Straight Bourbon Whiskey not only tells a story but invites you to savor every chapter.

Lazy K Bar Whiskey came barreling into Texas, specifically San Antonio, at Bohanan’s Prime Steak House on Saturday July 27th. Until this month, this bold bourbon could only be purchased in Montana.

SA Monthly magazine was one of the media choices to attend and be the FIRST to sample this luscious bourbon at the VIP tasting at Bohanan’s Prime Steaks & Seafood. Host Cole Hauser, star of Yellowstone Fame (known as Rip Wheeler to his huge fan base-of which I am one) and whose Montana family heritage dates back to 1862, has partnered with David Leuschen, owner of Lazy K Bar Ranch in Big Timber Montana, and Britt West, a 25 year beverage alcohol veteran and resident of Montana.

Sitting around a long table in the Upstairs Bar private room, we were treated to a tasting served neat, as we listened to the story of how the brand came to be. Then came a whiskey sour cocktail (or 2) and then the bourbon was served as is most frequently requested: on a giant rock, all as we were served the heavy Hors d’Oeuvres for which Bohanan’s is so famous. Questions and fun stories followed as they unpacked the bottles whose design is ruggedly handsome, with the ranch brand burned on aged leather, and topped with a heavy brass closure.

I can certainly attest that we are very lucky to be the next state to which they have expanded because, IT IS BODACIOUS!

They were also very gracious to gift each of us with a bottle, signed by Cole, and allowed us photo ops. I am a bourbon drinker, and a huge fan of Cole Hauser. Of course, I, like most people relate to him as Rip, the tough, complex, and unyielding character whose loyalty and unwavering commitment to the Duttons and their land, put him in the position of being the bad ass that does whatever it takes to keep them safe. He rules the group of wild cowboys that herd the cattle and work the ranch, and he can keep them in line with just a look (especially if they have already tasted his fists!) Of course, his love interest is Beth, the only daughter of John Dutton. She is intelligent, but is as gritty, cunning and unwavering as Rip. They are a perfect match. It is through their story, we see the heart and tenderness of of both their characters and make us huge fans! BUT WAIT... it’s about the Bourbon!

ABOUT THE RANCH: Founded as a working cattle and horse ranch in 1887, Lazy K Bar Ranch opened to guests in 1922, making it the oldest operating dude ranch in Montana. Despite growing over the decades to span some 12,000 acres, Lazy K Bar still maintains the legacy of its founding ethos.

Only available in Montana and now Texas, you can find it at select Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Foods locations, Nomad’s, Cowboy Liquors, with new retailers being added daily. It will be available in fine restaurants, and is currently at Bohanan’s.

As you raise your glass, the aromatic complexity of dark spices of clove and cinnamon are intriguing. A rich round mouthfeel of the sweetness of caramel, toffee and aged honey delight your taste buds as you sip this bold blend that finishes with a pleasant warming sensation.

I’m completely honored to have been a part of this fun historical event and thank Lazy K Bar Whiskey and DM Rodriguez of SA Monthly for giving me the opportunity to taste and review (and revel in fact that I met Rip, and that Rip gave me a hug! Sorry Cole, for this moment you are Rip to me!

And yes, Rip, had his ever present tooth pick (somehow a sexy look) when he walked up to us at the bar. My back was to him as I was speaking with another editor, Crystal Sepulveda, and as I hear a deep hello, I see her face light up and as I turn, I was very glad I was leaning on the bar, as it supported me, when he smiles and says “Hi, what’s your name?” I respond “Tawana, what’s yours?” He laughs loudly and says “Cole.” I don’t know why but I replied, “I thought it was Rip”, and he says, “okay, I can be Rip to you!” Undoubtedly he was a charmer, and is the perfect face for this divine bourbon. The Lazy K Bar representatives, Casey Mitchell and Blythe Beaubien, who along with Britt West, Vice President of Spirits of Gallo, and partner in the brand, provided us with an excellent evening of tasting and learning about this Bourbon that I predict will take Texas by storm, just as it did Montana!

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT BOURBON - To be bourbon, the whiskey must be:

*Made in America. (This comes from the 1964 Senate Concurrent Resolution 19, which formally declared that bourbon was a “distinctive product of the United States. While it can be produced anywhere in the US, 95% comes from Kentucky, due to it’s ideal climate.)

*Made from a mash that is at least 51% corn (Lazy K Bar Whiskey is 74% corn, 18% rye and 8% malted barley)

*Distilled to a proof no higher than 159(79.5% ABV)

*Aged in new charred oak barrels and put into the barrel at no more than 125 proof (“entry proof”)

*Bottled at no less than 80 proof (Lazy K Bar Whiskey is 92 proof)

Harvest season is an exciting time in the Texas hill country.

We spoke with Heath Family Brands, one of the major players in the Texas wine scene. This family of wineries includes Grape Creek Vineyards, Invention Vineyards, Heath Sparkling Wines, and Kuhlman Cellars. They will harvest sixty-eight acres of grapes by hand between their wineries this year. Harvest takes place at night, which is gentler on the fruit and cooler for the pickers. The grapes went directly from the vine to the harvest bins, then to cold storage for an early morning crush and the team tells SA Monthly that it’s already looking like an exceptional crop.

Here are a few of their estate-grown Texas hill country wines to enjoy in the crisp fall air:

Surprisingly complex, the Heath Family Estate 2020 Oringinalist was aged 18 months in American French oak. This blend of Montepulciano and Aglianico celebrates the tenth anniversary of Heath Family Estate’s first red wine and has jammy aromas of dark raspberry, black plum, caramel, and vanilla with notes of violet. Pair this wine with cozy alfredo sauce or bleu cheese-topped steak.

The Heath Family Estate 2020 Elitist is dark, brooding, and mysterious: the perfect wine for the chilly fall nights of spooky season. Ripe aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and blueberry merge with lilac, espresso, and generous amounts of sweet oak. This blend of Petite Syrah, Tannat, Montepulciano, and Alianico has strong tannins and a powerful finish. Enjoy this wine with brisket, burgers, and bolognese.

The Heath Family Estate 2020 Individualist is rustic and substantial, the quintessential campfire wine. The second vintage of this expert blend has layered aromas of plum, black raspberry, and black currant harmonizing with cinnamon, Mexican vanilla, and cedar. This Tannant-driven blend has great structure and a long, lingering finish. Try this wine with richly marinated grilled meats and vegetables.

Don’t forget October is Texas wine month! Be sure to drink local this October and support the fine vineyards Texas has to offer. One great way to try many premiere wines all at once is at the Fredericksburg Food and Wine Festival on October 25-26, 2024. Guests can enjoy 75+ culinary and wine tastings, interactive demos, live music, a Sunday shop, and a glamorous Sparkling Wine Garden by Heath Sparkling Wines. If you are looking to plan a wine-tasting trip at your own pace, consider these wineries: Heath Sparkling Wines to try their brand-new food and bubbles pairing for fall, head to Kuhlman Cellars to enjoy monarch butterflies during their winter migration, experience the Tuscan romance and views at Grape Creek Vineyards, or step into Invention Vineyards industrial-chic tasting room set on one of the most extensive vineyards in the Hill Country.

What a victory! The County Line Bar-B-Q restaurant on IH-10 won the “Best Cocktail” award during the Mixology Competition at the 2024 Texas Restaurant Awards & Lone Star Bash in San Antonio on Jul 14, 2024. Fellow local and Texas restaurateurs voted for this award. “Our Meyer lemon, vanilla bean infused simple syrup and bourbon smash was a hit! Huge thank you to homegrown Garrison Brothers Bourbon (from Hye, TX) and its phenomenal Small Batch Bourbon, but especially THANK YOU to everyone who attended the event and voted for us. We’re honored to be 2023 & 2024 cocktail winners during the TRA’s Mixology Competition,” says Garrett Stephens, Assistant GM, pitmaster, chef and mixologist at the popular County Line Bar-B-Q restaurant.

The winning cocktail was topped with a Citrus-Scented Vapor Cocktail Bubble. “75% of taste comes from smell, so this new trend of adding vapor bubbles to cocktails allows mixologists to add another dimension of taste with is actually a scent, not an ingredient.”

RECIPE:

2 oz Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon

1 oz Vanilla Bean Simple Syrup

2 dashes Angostura Orange bitters

.50 oz fresh squeezed Meyer lemon juice

2 oz Topo Chico Sabores Lime Mint Sparkling Water

Topped with Citrus-Scented Vapor Cocktail Bubble

Even though County Line is not offering this winning cocktail right now at the restaurant, County Line is offering a full menu of Spring/Summer cocktails featuring Standard Proof Whiskey and El Perrito Tequilas that are sure to impress with house made syrups, unique liqueurs and fresh fruit juices. The restaurant also offers an extensive, impressive line-up of spirits, wines and beers, for those who prefer others.

Another County Line bragging point from the Texas Restaurant Association—the creation of the Skeeter Miller Excellence in Advocacy Award. Don “Skeeter” Miller is President and Owner of all the County Line restaurants and a long-time officer in the TRA. The award was created and bestowed on Skeeter in 2023 to “celebrate a member who demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to our advocacy efforts on behalf of Texas’ entire foodservice industry—named after Skeeter Miller, who exemplifies the qualities that make a trusted advocate and has spent countless hours speaking up for restaurants at the local, state, and federal levels.”

Located at 4334 Hyatt Place Drive (on IH-10 West between the Wurzbach and Huebner Road exits), the County Line mobile app earns users loyalty points for food (and any drinks, including alcohol) ordered at any County Line location in Texas or New Mexico—be it delivery, pick-up, to-go or in-store orders.

Kaffeinated Crepes & Coffee

SA Monthly Magazine readers and fans, if you love the color Pink, then you need to stop by to visit this incredible whimsical coffee shop! My dearest friend, Marla invited me to celebrate my birthday. I had no idea where she was taking me, but all she kept telling me was that I would love it! When I walked inside, there was a great big pink tree located at the center of the restaurant. The branches of the tree extended throughout the entire room. The walls were covered with purple and pink roses. Marla enjoyed a ham crepe and I enjoyed a avocado toast with scrabbled eggs. We both shared a chocolate dip with various fruits. Owner, Almohtasib has a passion for cuisine and is demonstrated with every creative dish such as The Lotus Spread Crepe or The Chocolate Crepe. The menu offers crepes, coffees, waffles, Belgian chocolate dips and more. He now has two locations in San Antonio, Stone Oak and at the Rim. Luxury Peru Travel & Gourmet Experiences

Bryan &

Sandra

Shreve, Food & Wine Editors

SA Monthly Magazine editors Bryan & Sandra continue our world travels, finding the most interesting places and tasting many new foods from many different cultures. Taking a break from the Texas heat was essential for us, and our newest destination must be a bit cooler.

Where else could we go to still enjoy the summer months with a milder climate with warm days and cool crisp nights? Peru offers the best weather in July and August (their winter months and considered the dry season) with misty sea air and a blanket of clouds in the evenings, above drift over the incredibly tall Andes Mountains of Cusco, over 11,150 feet above sea level, exploring the ancient Inca city, to Machu Picchu, coming close to 8,000 feet above sea level.

Our private tour of Lima included a Gourmet Food Tour, staying at Lima’s prestigious 5-star hotel known as The Country Club Lima Hotel, known as the only hotel in Peru, that is considered a national monument.

Our next stop was at another 5-star famously known as Sumaq Hotel, located in the mountains of Machu Picchu overlooking the Vilcanota River. Pre-Columbian art and woven textiles beautified the Inca inspired architecture, with alleys adorned with art shops, restaurants, and friendly people from all over the world. Lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge located in Machu Picchu hotel with a true experience of the Peruvian cuisine is fabulous. The Peruvian people were true gracious hosts, and we felt welcomed and safe in exploring the shops, museums, cathedrals, and tourist attractions along with seeing the beautiful Alpacas, Llamas, and Guinea pigs (also on the menu). Coca tea is a must for the altitude, Muña Tea for our immune system, along with so many other teas found in nearly every restaurant and hotels. Light meals on your first few days are also recommended. The mountains, valleys, rivers, and incredible scenery is worth putting on your bucket list. SA Monthly Magazine

readers and fans, Sandra and I recommend this South American tour recognize Peru as a top culinary tour.

The Biology of Love – What Can Our Cells Tell Us About

the Importance of Love?

www.mednatura.us

He calls it the “honeymoon effect.”

Almost everyone can remember a time when they were “madly in love.”

During this juicy stage of life, our perception of the world expands and our eyes twinkle with pleasure. Our affection is not limited to the chosen partner, but we are in love with life itself and it shows.

Environmental cues, whether of love or

another emotion, are paramount in creating disease.

The science of epigenetics, which explores how cellular chemical reactions turn genes on and off.

Research in this field has found that stress, diet, behavior, toxins, and other factors activate chemical switches that regulate gene expression.

In other words, the perception of our environment is responsible for the health of our body 90% of the time.

The power of perception!!

In other words, when your cells transmit to your mind, it works diligently to create the same chemical reality in your body. So, if you think you’re going to get sick, your mind will coordinate your cells to make it happen. And if your cells transmit signals that suggest you’re vibrant and healthy, your mind will also take care of making it happen.

A shift toward love and vitality

The impact of love itself is real and biochemically measurable: “When subjects focus their attention on the heart and activate a core heart feeling, such as love, appreciation, or care, these emotions immediately change their heartbeat rhythms into a more coherent pattern.

Increased heartbeat coherence triggers a cascade of neural and biochemical events that affect virtually every organ in the body. Studies show that cardiac coherence leads to greater intelligence by reducing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system – our fight-or-flight mechanism – and at the same time increasing the growth-promoting activity of the parasympathetic nervous system.”

As a result, stress hormones are reduced and the anti-aging hormone DHEA is produced.

It turns out that molecular biology and love are a perfect match. are the perfect path to sanction, Continually experiencing that heaven on earth, with dancing proteins in our cells that swoon and sway with love.

The Critical Role of Sleep in Children

As we approach the beginning of school once again I want to highlight a problem I see frequently in children and adolescents that I think has significant implications on health including performance in school but also in weight and long term health. Sleep is a fundamental biological need that plays a crucial role in the overall health and well-being of children. Adequate sleep is essential for physical, cognitive, and emotional development, particularly during the formative years of childhood. In recent years, there has been a growing body of research highlighting the significant impact of sleep

on children’s academic performance and school success.

Numerous studies have demonstrated a strong correlation between sleep duration and academic achievement in children. Research has consistently shown that children who get an adequate amount of sleep perform better in school compared to those who are sleep-deprived. A study published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews found that insufficient sleep in children is associated with lower academic performance, impaired cognitive function, and difficulties in attention and memory retention. Many children are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder when they actually have a genuine lack of sleep.

Sleep plays a critical role in consolidating learning and memory processes in children.

During sleep, the brain processes and stores information acquired during the day, which is essential for optimal cognitive function and academic performance. A study published in the journal Pediatrics showed that children who get sufficient sleep have better memory retention, problem-solving skills, and overall cognitive abilities compared to those who are sleep-deprived.

In addition to sleep duration, the quality of sleep also plays a significant role in children’s school performance. Poor sleep quality, characterized by frequent awakenings, disruptions, or inadequate restorative sleep, can have detrimental effects on cognitive function and academic achievement. A study published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that children with sleep disturbances are more likely to experience difficulties in school, such as poor concentration, behavioral problems, and lower grades. Many kids spend hours in front of phones, iPads, and computers which reduces sleep quality from the light emitted from the screens. It is recommended that computer or phone exposure stop 2 hours prior to bedtime. Also, sleep apnea is a growing problem that prevents good sleep due to the growing number of overweight children in society. Enlarged tonsils and being overweight are two risk factors for sleep apnea. Uncontrolled asthma also affects sleep quality and overall learning outcomes.

Given the critical role of sleep in children’s academic performance, it is essential for parents, educators, and healthcare providers to prioritize healthy sleep habits in children. Some recommendations for improving children’s sleep include:

1. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine

2. Creating a sleep-friendly environment

3. Limiting screen time before bedtime

4. Encouraging physical activity during the day

5. Monitoring and addressing sleep disturbances or disorders

6: Visit your family physician or pediatrician to evaluate for sleep disorders, weight management, oral and tonsil health as well as screening for asthma or sleep apnea and other sleep disorders

In conclusion, adequate sleep is essential for children’s overall health and well-being, with profound implications for academic performance and school success. By recognizing the importance of sleep in children and implementing strategies to promote healthy sleep habits, we can support optimal cognitive function, learning, and development in school-aged children. It is crucial for parents, educators, and healthcare providers to work together to prioritize sleep as a fundamental component of children’s academic success.

Enjoy the new school year and look ti

Bullying a Hot Topic

While the summer days continue to sizzle in San Antonio, many children are back in school. Bullying continues to be a hot topic, but it is also a significant social problem in our society today. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that at least 33% of middle school children have been bullied. This number is higher for primary and secondary school levels. Our children can experience psychological, emo-

tional, social issues, academic problems, and even physical somatic issues, such as headaches, stomach aches and insomnia, from being bullied.

Long term effects can be anxiety, depression, relationship problems, self-esteem issues, body image problems, and continued eating disorders (de Lara, 2019). Sadly, research shows that bullying can lead to suicide or outward aggression and violence by the victims. That is why this is a hot topic, because our children are being hurt by bullying. So, let’s talk about what bullying is first. Bullying is repeated, unwanted aggressive behavior by a person

or group to assert power over a perceived weaker person. Often victims of bullying are those with special needs, those who are viewed as different than the majority, those who may be of a lower socio-economic status, and often the LGBTQ+ community.

Three types of bullying are:

• Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Verbal bullying includes:

o Teasing

o Name-calling

o Inappropriate sexual comments

o Taunting

o Threatening to cause harm

• Social bullying, sometimes referred to as relational bullying, involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships. Social bullying includes:

o Leaving someone out on purpose

o Telling other children not to be friends with someone

o Spreading rumors about someone

o Embarrassing someone in public

• Physical bullying involves hurting a person’s body or possessions. Physical bullying includes:

o Hitting/kicking/pinching

o Spitting

o Tripping/pushing

o Taking or breaking someone’s things

o Making mean or rude hand gestures (www. stopbullying.gov).

Know the warning signs as parents and adults, so you can get help. Signs that a child may be being bullied include withdrawing from others, appetite and/or sleep changes, declining

academics, unexplained injuries, missing valuables like jewelry, electronics, or money, and acting depressed or showing feelings of

helplessness.

As a parent or loved one of a child who may be being bullied, take action. Keep an open line of communication with your child, ask questions that may be uncomfortable, reassure the child that they can share safely with you, ensure the child knows it is not the child’s fault, and work together to find a resolution. Some solutions may be seeking the advice of a school social worker or school counselor, speaking to the principal, and seeking professional psychotherapy with a mental health therapist privately to help the child process feelings and worries in a safe space. Finally, know that most school districts have implemented an anonymous alert system to report bullying or other violence in schools. Help your child be familiar with how to report anonymously through the school alert system.

Together, we can combat bullying, but it takes acknowledging there is a problem, being open to finding appropriate solutions, working with those who can help in our schools, and teaching not only, tolerance of differences, empathy, and acceptance of those who are different but also making sure your child has confidence, good self-esteem, and feels safe talking to you about this very significant problem our children often experience not only at school but in our communities.

International Overdose Awareness Day

With summer coming to an end, school for millions of children and young adults is starting to gear up. Parents are scrambling to get their students ready for the new school year with supplies, Meet The Teacher, and other important events to start the new academic year.

While this time can be both exciting and challenging, another situation that both medical and mental health providers are gearing up for is the rise of overdoses throughout the student populations. Indeed, it has become a problem that schools have to address as well, with the rise of students bringing vape pens and other substances to school. School administrators have seen an increase in students receiving disciplinary actions for bringing vape pens and other drugs to school. Indeed, one cannot drive down the highways without spotting a billboard sign showing portraits of youths who have lost their lives to addiction, with numbers or websites providing resources for health.

August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, this day is the “world’s largest annual campaign to end overdoses.” The President stated on this day that it is to “raise awareness of substance use disorder so that our Nation can combat stigmatization, promote treatment, celebrate recovery, and strengthen our collective efforts to prevent overdose deaths.”

The problem is rampant; per the Center for Disease Control (Cdc.gov), the rate of overdose deaths was 107,941 between 2021 and 2022. This looks to average out to 32.6 deaths per 100,000 Americans. The number one cause of death is Fetanyl and other opioids. Per the Council of Foreign Relations (cfr.org), more than 1,500 Americans die each week from an opioid overdose. This of course is not the only risky substance, as each year Americans die from a multitude of other substances like methamphetamines, cocaine, prescription pill abuse, and alcohol as well. Even if someone does not die from an overdose, they can still have lifelong physical and psychological side effects like cognitive impairments to include permanent brain damage, paranoia, an increase in depression and anxiety, and psychosis.

So how do we identify that someone might be overdosing?

Per SAMHSA.Gov, The signs of overdose can be the following:

* Dilated pupils

* Drowsiness and loss of consciousness.

* Limp body

* Slow, weak, or no breathing

* Cold and clammy skin

* Discolored skin, particularly the lips and nails

* Slurred speech and drooling

* Choking or gurgling sounds

If you think someone is overdosing, first call for help by calling 911 and staying with them until help arrives.

-If available, you can administer Naloxone (Narcan)

-Try to keep the person alert by talking to them, shaking them, giving them a sternal rub, etc.

-Lay the person on the side to prevent choking on vomit

(*samhsa.gov)

Once that person is medically stabilized and discharged from the hospital, follow up and continued treatment is necessary. There are a variety of treatment options: inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs/ intensive outpatient programs, medication assisted treatment at an outpatient detox center, etc. Drug counseling with a licensed chemical dependency counselor to uncover the reasons and triggers for addiction and relapse is also an essential part of treatment.

Rather than shame people for the disease of addiction, we need to connect them to resources for recovery. While it is true that one has to be motivated to work towards sobriety, it helps when stigma barriers are brought down, and treatment becomes accessible.

In closing, on International Overdose Awareness Day, take some time to have a con-

versation with your student as they head to school. Be aware that there are a lot of pressures and access out there for them to get a hold of illicit drugs. Talk directly but with no judgement about drugs and other substances, the harm they cause, and reassure them that they have parents that are concerned, aware, and available to help.

San Antonio Dreamin’: Millennial Struggles in the Alamo City Housing Market

San Antonio, once a haven for affordable living and laid-back charm, is rapidly transforming into a city where the dream of homeownership is becoming increasingly elusive for millennials. While the city’s vibrant culture, job opportunities, and lower cost of living compared to other Texas metros still hold appeal, the housing market has undergone a seismic shift that’s leaving many young adults feeling locked out.

The allure of San Antonio’s growing economy has attracted a surge of residents, both young professionals and families. This influx of demand has collided with a limited supply of housing, driving up prices at an alarming rate. What was once considered a reasonable price point for a starter home is now often out of reach for those burdened with student loan debt and the rising costs of living.

Moreover, the competitive nature of the market has created a frenzy of bidding wars. Millennials find themselves competing against established homeowners looking to upgrade, as well as investors seeking rental properties. With limited inventory and skyrocketing prices, securing a home can feel like winning the lottery – a lottery with increasingly unfavorable odds.

The challenges extend beyond the financial realm. Many millennials prioritize location, seeking homes in desirable neighborhoods with amenities like parks, restaurants, and entertainment options. However, these areas often command premium prices, further exacerbating the affordability issue. Additionally, the dream of a spacious backyard or a dedicated home office is becoming a luxury for many, as smaller, older homes dominate the market.

While San Antonio retains its appeal as a city of opportunity, the housing market presents a formidable obstacle for millennials. As this generation continues to navigate the complexities of adulthood, the dream of homeownership may require innovative solutions, such as government incentives, increased housing development, and a shift in buyer expectations. Until then, many young adults will find themselves caught in a perpetual state of renting or delaying the pursuit of the American Dream.

During the summer and fall, many people are getting out and traveling. In fact people are not only getting out, but getting out in historic numbers. For many people, this can mean traveling to another city, state, or even country. With all the increase in tourism also comes an increase in people going to amusement parks. Amusement parks can be a great way to spend quality time with family and friends. These parks have all kinds of entertainment options such as restaurants, shows, and of course rides.

As we all know, many of these rides can be very intense. Unfortunately, it’s no surprise that riding these rides can sometimes result in serious injuries or even death. Some typical injuries can include injuries to your head, back, neck, legs, and hands/ fingers, to name a few.

Sometimes the injury could be related to the visitor doing something they are not supposed to, like not following the instructions of the ride attendants, but sometimes not. For example, amusement parks can be negligent and liable not only in their maintenance of the ride, but also of the negligent in their training and supervision of their employees.

If you believe you may have been injured as a result of your experience on one of these rides, here are a few things to remember.

(1) Get a recording of the people you interact with, if possible, or have someone you are with do it for you. As is the case in most personal injury claims or lawsuits, at least some of the facts will likely be in dispute. For example: did you follow the instructions of the ride attendant? Did you do anything on the ride that you were told not to do? Did the employees assisting you make any incriminating statements? These are just a few examples of issues that could be in dispute. A recording of anything that happened

that day related to the incident could be very valuable to your case.

(2) Most people who attend these parks are not alone. In addition to making sure you are ok, if possible, have the person you are with get the names of all the attendants present and the supervisor if possible. Make sure, if possible, that they keep track of all the details surrounding the incident. Did the ride attendants seem like they knew what they were doing? Did anyone observe them make a report? Was there anything that showed an apparent maintenance issue with the ride? Did anyone indicate that this type of injury has occurred before on this ride?

(3) Get medical attention. It goes without saying, that it’s better to err on the side of caution in this department. As is the situation with many injuries, many of us don’t like going anywhere near a hospital or clinic unless we absolutely need to. We also often feel like we are not hurt and try to just shake it off, only to find out later when the pain sets in. It is often better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our health. Don’t ignore the possibility that you could have a serious head, back, or neck injury and not even know it. The sooner you find out about this the better.

I highly recommend seeking the advice of an attorney to get an option on whether or not you have a potential case. Many, if not all, attorneys that practice personal injury offer free consultations. There’s no harm in at least running the facts by one to get another opinion. It may be that there is no case, but it may be that you have a right to be compensated for what happened, and can use the guidance of someone who has been down this road to lead you through the process.

MUSIC

noun

The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.

CHRIS LOPEZ

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

I’ve actually done nothing else, ever. I started gigging toward the end of high school with my first band. I played guitar at the time, but I was mainly the vocalist. I performed on weekends, and a few years later, when we disbanded, I started playing acoustic solo shows a few times weekly. Then, eventually, I created my own three piece band and started doing solo gigs during the week and jamming with the band on weekends.

Do you have any upcoming shows?

I perform, usually, at least five to six nights weekly. I try to book doubles on Fridays, Saturdays, and/or Sundays if I can. Usually upwards of six shows weekly. So I would say that I am very grateful to have shows very regularly, and on my social media pages or website, you can see where I will be next.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

John Mayer. Great singer. Master guitarist, whether electric or acoustic. Brilliant songwriter. He does it all.

When I saw ‘Where The Light Is’ Live In Los Angeles... he opens with an acoustic set, comes back out with the trio, and then does a full big band set. That just made me wanna up my game and be: singer, amazing acoustic and lead guitarist, and songwriter ‘Chris Lopez’ lol. He really inspires me and is also my favorite living artist. Even though my overall body of music original music is very different.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

My Dad, Leo Lopez, told me when I was first in my high school band, “If you practice singing and playing, you’ll never be unable to gig.”

He not only got me into classical guitar lessons at the age of 10, but he also ran sound for my band once I created CLB and did booking, upkeep of instrument maintenance, was my rock in the earlier days. He still is my rock. But he has gracefully since retired from his job and CLB, well deservedly. I owe him everything.

*How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I would say that it’s in the Rock genre, but with an Adult-Contemporary feel. My older stuff used to be much heavier, but I’m trying to make music appealing to all ages now, as opposed to just the Hard-Rock peeps.

*Who are your biggest musical influences?

For vocals- Jim Morrison, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Bob Marley

For Guitar- Jimi Hendrix, SRV, John Mayer, Santana, Eric Clapton

For music overall- all of the above, plus DC Talk, Stick Figure, Audioslave, Biggie, Incubus, Staind, Otis Redding, Bob Marley... too many to count.

*What makes your music unique?

My current original music infuses Rock, Reggae, and Hip-Hop, with deep soul. Bluesy guitar leads with hooking riffs and catchy chorus melodies. The message is uplifting and focused on overcoming, positivity, love, faith and very spiritual.

*What is your creative process like?

For me, it always starts with guitar. I’ll be

playing, or thinking of a melody or chord progression and record it on my phone before I forget. Then come lyrics. Lyrical melody always comes right to me. Thankfully, I’ve been blessed to have something to say, so that makes the process flow.

*What is one message you would give to your fans?

I love ya’ll! Thank you for your support. Love one another, and God bless you all!

*Where have you performed?

NIOSA, multiple festivals, Spurs games, private events, The (late) Rustic SA, Chicken N Pickle, Pete’s Place, Hyatt Hotels, 151 Saloon, Thirsty Horse Saloon, Altsdadt Brewery, Guadalupe Brewing, Rebecca Creek, Wine 101, Shady Lady, Bar 414, Stout House locations, upcoming at Rock & Brews, and many more. All of those are currently spots that myself, or my band play regularly. The schedule is always at: www.chrislopezband.com

*What is your favorite song to perform?

I’ve been feeling my new single ‘Training For The Flood’ lately. Also, anything blues.

*What’s next for you?

My new album is almost finished. I’m in the process of getting final mixing & mastering on the rest of the tracks.

Before it’s out, I’m just about to drop a new single, ‘Your Own Flow’, and shortly after, an EP of the current finished songs.

*What would you like your Music Legacy to be?

My new music inspires people to be kind to others, lift people up, and keep going no matter what. For me personally, to be thankful and know were all my blessings come from. I truly hope I can portray those things through my music to brighten people’s lives. In Jesus’ name I play.

RYDER GRIMES

Texas country artist Ryder Grimes of Poetry, Texas, scores second consecutive No. 1 hit, and he’s just getting started

Independent artist Ryder Grimes has once again soared to the top of the Texas charts with his latest single, “8 Seconds at a Time,” marking his second consecutive No. 1 hit. Hailing from the Northeast Texas town of Poetry, Grimes has grown his fan base across the state and beyond with his authentic blend of heartfelt lyrics and traditional country sound.

“8 Seconds at a Time” is a song about rodeo life and chasing the dream of earning a gold belt buckle. “The lyrics describe the pain of

losing, but in the end when you win – it’s the greatest feeling ever, in my opinion,” said Grimes. “You can relate it to a lot of things in life, not just rodeoing.”

Fans and radio stations are relating to the song’s message and loving it! It’s found a home on the Texas charts for an impressive 28 weeks.

Grimes’ latest success comes on the heels of a remarkable first half of 2024 where he not only clinched the New Male Vocalist award at the Texas Regional Radio Awards but also secured sponsorships with four prominent companies that recognize his talent and potential in the music industry.

He feels humbled to have the support of R. Watson Boots, Ranch Fuel Energy, COWI Brand (apparel), and Cowboys Trailers and Ranches.

“It means a lot to be recognized by companies that I love and to know that they like what I am doing and want to partner with me – that’s cool,” said Grimes. Grimes attributes his success to hard work, a great team, and his dedication to growing as a songwriter. He recalls a pivotal moment listening to country legend Toby Keith discuss songwriting in an interview. “Toby once said, ‘Anything can be a song. If you see something inspiring, put it in your pocket so you always have something to pull out and write.’ That advice stuck with me,” Grimes shared. “We all have those songs that mean a lot to us, and a lot of those songs came from guys and gals who poured their heart and soul out into the music they wanted to write and play – and that’s my goal. I just want to write great songs and put out good music.”

Writing is how Grimes spends most of his time when at home in Poetry, and he tries to write at least half a song each day. When on the road, he spends his time focusing on the positives, reading scripture, and praying before he hits the stage to give his best to his fans.

“Doing this for a living is a blessing, for sure. It makes me happy that people are coming to see me – whether it’s five people, 500 or 5,000 – I want to give them the best show I can and perform like it’s my last show to play,” he added.

As Grimes celebrates his second No. 1 hit, he is solidifying his place in country music –and there is no place he’d rather be. For more information on Ryder Grimes and to stay updated on his latest music releases and tour dates, visit

Questions for First-Time Cruisers 101

I often get phone calls from people who have never gone on a cruise and they don’t know where to start. No wonder they are confused looking online: in the Caribbean alone, 37 cruise lines have 154 ships traveling.

And remember, even though cruise ships look similar, but each cruise line has its own personalities, strengths, and weaknesses; there are huge differences between classic big-boat cruises and smaller, more luxurious ships.

To jumpstart the process here are some questions you can use first with your travel companion(s), then with your travel agent—assuming you are smart enough to use one! More on that later…….

Where do you want to go? Be sure to identify your bucket list cities/ports/areas.

Are you thinking about a river or ocean cruise? They are very different but each have definite appealing traits.

Cruises have a mix of clientele, but different ones cater to families; Seniors; millennials or younger.

When do you want to travel? Determine the drop dead days you can leave your house and when you must return.

How long do you want your cruise? Remember that on the final day of a cruise you have to be off the ship usually by 8 a.m., so it is definitely not a relaxing day by the pool.

What type of cabin do you want? They can vary from an inside (with no windows and small size); oceanview (with window); balcony to a luxurious suite with butler service.

NOTE: you should consider location on ship e.g. mid-ship to combat sea sickness; staying away

from decks below the pool or casino, etc.

Are you traveling alone, as a couple, with a family or a group? If a family, how old are the kids and what are their needs? Some lines cater to solo travelers.

Do you prefer a smaller, more intimate vessel or a gigantic mega liner with all the bells and whistles - or something in the middle? How important is the age of the ship?

Do you want a port-intensive itinerary with a port nearly every day, or one with relaxing days at sea?

How important is cuisine? Important to know about specialty dining experiences. How important are the perks of alcoholic/soda/ specialty coffees pkg; unlimited or strong WiFi? What is your cruise budget, per person?

Other miscellaneous points: excursions, passports, discounts for military/firefighters/teachers………the list goes on!

GASP! A lot to think about, right? I am getting a lot of business from people who tried to do it themselves and realized how many mine fields there are and how many opportunities they lost doing it themselves. The reality is that they don’t have my connections and agency-specific promotions. The point is: depending on your interests, lifestyles and pocketbook, there is a vacation out there for you, if you know what to ask!
