Specifications -

Live Brief set by Alec Dudson, Editor of Intern magazine. Collaboration - J’nae Saunders, Victoria Redmond, Beth Dalzell, Jordan Reeder Brief - Create the concept for a new independent magazine. Concept - Focusing on the human element of people living off grid, their stories and lives. The magazine should embody what it means to be ‘off the grid. The human element of the magazine, focusing on reals people and real lives is paramount to the success of the magazine. Through research it was discovered that people love to read about other peoples lives in a slightly voyeuristic manner. The magazine is a proposed bi annual publication. This allows the content to be thoroughly researched and considered. The magazine should be authentic and the stories and interviews involved would be written and undertaken by people experiencing the life style. Considerations - As the magazine concept is all about living off grid it is important that the magazine reflects this in a certain way. The magazine will be produced on a recycled uncoated stock and use traditional stab stitch binding making it more Eco friendly than a regular magazine and providing connotations of an Eco friendly sustainability. Target audience - The target audience of Off The Grid are independent magazine readers interested in social and cultural topics. The topic of the magazine also attracts Eco friendly people with an invested interest in the state of the earth. Travelers will also be attracted to the magazine. Dimensions - A4 - The size of the magazine has been decided with the reader and content in mind. As the magazine is a bi annual publication it has to seem sturdy and robust. Typeface - Hand rendered logo type for title page

Research -

The preliminary research stage involved looking at existing magazines that loosely covered the themes and topics that Off The Grid would cover. This allowed the decisions to be made on colour and layout. This research was also beneficial in making sure the magazine was completely original and independent. The importance of independent magazines is to find a unique niche target audience. The findings from the research allowed the magazine to be positioned with in the independent magazine market. Off the grid is aimed at readers that are interested in learning about new cultures and life styles, as opposed to people who are actually living off of the grid.

Further research -

The next stage in the research was to find imagery that suited the theme and content of the magazine. Finding appropriate imagery for the magazine allowed for the tone of voice to develop. Looking further in to the themes and topics that would be covered in the magazine it was decided it should have a formal and informative tone, and not over exaggerating the stories or exploit the people interviewed. Sourcing images relevant to the magazine theme also helped to develop a natural colour scheme of green, blue and brown tones. The colour schemes aid the connotations of earthiness and nature.

Outcomes -

From the research in to the tone of voice, the magazine layouts are understated and clean to allow the images to talk for them selves. The focal point of the magazine is the people and their stories which is mainly translated through images. The magazine avoids gimmicks and shock tactics and aims to deliver its message in the most clear and concise way possible.
