FRILL SEEKERS The fringe trend is a beautiful homage to the Gatsby era of the 1920’s. It provides a feminine silhouette of movement and fluidity that can be dressed up or down.

For a subtle day look embrace the trend by adding a fringed kimono, pump or bag to your outfit. At night opt for a dress or strapless jumpsuit with fringed detailing pared back with a basic pump, sleek high pony and a fire red lip.

PAPER, PRECISION AND PATIENCE MAKE KOJIMA NAHOKO AN ARTIST TO BE REVERED. THIS INTRICATE FORM OF ART HAS NEVER LOOKED SO BEAUTIFUL, ESPECIALLY FROM BELOW Nahoko Kojima is a professional contemporary Japanese papercut artist, born in Hyogo, Japan and has been spearheading hand-made Japanese Papercut Art in the UK and is fast becoming one of the leaders in her discipline internationally. Nahoko started Kirie (Japanese Papercutting) under private tutelage at the age of 5 and continued throughout her formative years which lead to her later years where she graduated with a degree in Design at Kuwasawa Institue in Tokyo. An avid follower of fashion and trends, she found much of her inspiration in the city and after briefly pursuing a career in Graphic Design, she up and left for London in 2005, keen to learn and absorb more of the Western culture of the Arts. By 2009 she was cutting professionally, filling the Exposure Gallery in Central London with over 100 paper cuts some from her time in Tokyo with the majority of her cutting completed in London. In 2010, Kojima opened her studio in Central London and started working on multiple works including the Majestic Birds, Kiku Flowers Collection, the full colour Alice Collection which was based on the book by Lewis Carroll and numerous commissions, selling works mostly to private collectors and members of the public attending her Open Studio events.

小島 奈保子 Kojima Nahoko

In 2011 She co-founded Solo & Kojima in Clerkenwell, a Company specialising in Paper Cut Art and Design consultation. In 2012 Kojima was successful in being selected by the Craft Council for Collect, at the Saatchi Gallery in London. The piece unveiled at the show was a new experiment which saw Paper Cuts being treated as sculpture which truly challenged established views of the art form. Kojima is known to create one-off designs that are never duplicated and for Collect she showed just one piece, the life-sized Cloud Leopard, one hand-cut sheet of black paper, suspended from the ceiling in a manner that created a sculptural representation of the animal intertwined with narrative and hidden characters. It took 5 months to complete and the piece was very successful because of Kojima’s pioneering technique, turning traditionally flat wall hung pieces into sculptures floating in exhibition halls. The Cloud Leopard toured in Europe in partnership with the Italian cultural organisation Arte&Arte, showing at Villa Olmo in Como Italy, Le Beffroi in Paris and was part of Clerkenwell Design Week in London 2013.

小 島 奈 保 子 In 2013 Nahoko was awarded the Jerwood Makers Open commission for which she proposed her next major Paper Cut Sculpture. This piece was unveiled in the same year, taking 7 months to make and was called Byaku (meaning ‘white’ in Japanese), a handmade lifesized Polar Bear cut using only one 3m x 3m[6] sheet of white Japanese washi paper and her latest award of the ArtPrize2014 for the installation Paper Cut Sculpture Washi – a Bald Eagle. Nahoko continues to push the boundaries and break perceptions of art created with paper, she is truly an inspiration to those keen to pursue art forms outside the ‘norm’. 2015 will surely see Nahoko continue to amaze us with her incredible masterpieces. www.solokojima.com

With its ultra-dynamic proportions, elegantly sporty lines, low-slung silhouette and innovative design features, the BMW i8 represents a new generation of sports car. Bringing together hallmark features of the BMW brand with the design language developed especially for BMW i cars creates a progressive aesthetic which faithfully communicates the performance attributes, efficiency and innovative premium character of the plug-in hybrid sports car.

One Coast Magazine

57

The launch of the BMW i8 sees the world’s first sports car to be purpose-built with sustainability in mind complete its journey from vision to reality. Its unmistakable, emotion-stirring looks can be put down to a prototype design that was first unveiled in the guise of the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics, meticulously refined for the BMW i8 Concept exhibited at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and now adopted virtually unchanged for the production version. Both the exterior and interior of the emotionally-led 2+2-seater embody a revolutionary, pioneering take on the Sheer Driving Pleasure for which BMWis renowned. Clean, minimalist lines, homogeneous surfaces defined by a small number of crisp edges and function-focused details underline the forward-looking nature of the BMW i8.

58

One Coast Magazine

As the second series-produced BMW i model on the road, the BMW i8 also reveals the versatility of the design language which is establishing itself as an unmistakable signature of BMW i cars. Its design signals lightness, safety, efficiency and pure driving pleasure – stand-out qualities that the BMW i8plug-in hybrid sports car shares with the BMW i3, its pure-electric sibling conceived for agile and comfortable urban driving.

8

The key to this versatility is the innovative LifeDrive architecture, which opens up an exceptional degree of freedom for the design of BMW i cars. Its dynamic character reflected in the long bonnet, clearly visible aerodynamic aids, stretched roofline, short overhangs and long, 2,800- millimetre wheelbase. The pioneering combination of sporting ability and efficiency is translated into the design of the 2+2-seater with intoxicating élan – and with the signature BMW i design language to the fore. The car’s wide track (1,644 millimetres at the front axle, 1,721 millimetres at the rear) completes the powerful dynamic presence generated by the car’s proportions. www.bmw.co.th

DIAVEL

THE DIAVEL IS A TRUE DUCATI, BORN FROM A PASSION FOR MOTORCYCLING AND DESIGNED TO DELIVER AUTHENTIC DUCATI PERFORMANCE IN EVERY RESPECT. The stance of the Diavel is that of readiness, dominance, and confidence bordering on superiority. While the intoxicating design of the new Diavel may imply “cruiser,” the brute force of its 162 hp Testastretta engine and its razor sharp handling prove otherwise. A massive 240 section rear tyre is the perfect example of how Diavel designers used a no-compromise attitude when applying their wish list of features. The sheer width of rubber communicates so much power that the R&D team vowed to find, and succeeded in finding, a way to make it handle - even if they knew the image would send a seismic shock through the industry. The Diavel’s heart is the Ducati Testastretta 11° Dual Spark (DS) - developed directly from the incredibly powerful, worldbeating race engines of Ducati Corse. Ducati’s Testastretta 11° DS harnesses the immense power of the Superbike engine and make it a perfectly manageable ride.

In just a few short years, New York-based fashion photographer Emily Soto has rocketed from rookie to household name - to currently one of the most sought after industry names for her enchanting images that evoke a sense of romantic whimsy that seem effortlessly captured in her distinct, dreamy style. Experimenting with digital, film and instant photography techniques, coupled with a passion for styling and a fairytale view of the fashion world, Emily has managed to retain a sense of purity and innocence to her work that is seemingly irresistable for its inherent magic and charm. With a portfolio to die for and a slew of international workshops and seminars under her belt, Emily has crafted one of the most captivating and beautiful brands of photography the fashion industry has seen in a long time, which has instantly put her name among the legends of fashion imagery. One Coast was lucky to catch up with Emily and find out the secret to her success. ~ You could be described equally as an Artist, Entrepreneur and Photographer. Which order suits you most and which do you feel most comfortable being referred as? This is an interesting question as I generally think of myself as a photographer however as a photographer my role is very complex. I think an artist would suit me most as my goal is to capture mood and emotion in a painterly style. I have never thought of myself as an entrepreneur however the business side of photography is very important so it has been necessary for me to learn how to brand my work and develop my trade.

I have grown immensely since starting four years ago and have learned so much about the industry as well as my direction this past year since moving to NYC. I am very excited for 2015 as I have some great new talents, magazines and clients to work with. I definitely will continue shooting with film and polaroids and am excited to be teaming up with Film Ferrania as they launch in 2015. What do you consider the biggest catalyst for creativity? And do you ever find your creativity hindered by the nuances of the fashion photography industry? To me the most important part of every shoot is the emotion of the subject. It is important that they are comfortable in front of the camera and can work to achieve the concept and mood of each shoot. Creativity can easily be hindered in the fashion photography industry but I believe it is important to stay true to yourself and your work. Over the years I have had people try to steer me in different directions but in order to remain passionate about your work it’s important to work on projects you love.

Hosting workshops across the world, do you f ind cer tain countries or cultures receive you differently? Where have your most memorable workshops been held? It is interesting what different cultures like about my work and style. Some love my studio work, some my outdoor work, some my polaroids and others my digital. It is an honor to have the opportunity to meet photographers around the world and I learn so much traveling and from each of the people I meet. My workshop in Ireland this year has been my most memorable as it was held at a beautiful mansion called the Russborough House. We were able to stay there and it was quite a magical experience. How do you define your work-life balance? Before moving to NYC I worked 24/7. Since moving here I have learned to step back, work hard but keep relationships first. It’s important to prioritize and organize your time so you can have those important friendships that keep you going so you don’t burn out. Tea or Coffee? Coffee 100% of the time! My husband makes the best coffee for me every morning, I’m lucky!

SLIPPERY WHEN WET Koh Phangan’s newest attraction Slip N Fly offers hours of wet and wild party fun

You sit at the top and look down at the 40 meters of plastic and steel that promise to fling you into one of the biggest pools you’ve ever seen, clutching the blue padded sides with anticipation. The whistle blows and you push off, slipping down the steep slide. Your body gently curves up the ramp at the end and you go flying into the air. Time seems to stand still as you hang in the air, revelers watching you with glee. You can hear their whoops of joy as the air whooshes past your ears. Next thing you know, you’ve splashed back down into the water below. You surface with a smile, adrenaline coursing through your veins. You can’t wait to get up to the top and do it again. Welcome to Slip ‘N Fly: Koh Phangan’s newest attraction. The main feature is of course the two slides, one with a slightly higher ramp than the other for those wanting to try something even more extreme, and there is so much more. A smaller, less daunting slide twists and turns its way down the hill and promises fun for those who aren’t quite ready to take the big leap. Two fully-stocked bars serve up premium drinks, while international and Western food outlets dish out yummy snacks to fill hungry bellies. Internationally-renowned DJs take turns spinning funky house beats throughout the day to keep the party vibe going, helped out by dancers, musicians, and other unique performers providing entertainment - as if watching people fling themselves into the air weren’t enough!

Koh Phangan is well-known for its parties, but until now, almost all of them have taken place after dark, leaving wannabe partiers with little to do during the day other than laze on the beach. Don’t get us wrong - we love a bit of beach time, but there’s only so much sand in our bums we can handle. The island does have a few fun activities that visitors enjoy during the day, including Phangan Wipeout - a floating water obstacle course where one can have hours of fun. Indeed, it was the owner of Phangan Wipeout, South African-born Gregg Elliott, who came up with the idea for Slip ‘N Fly. He found himself two business partners: Surat Thani-born Jaroenchai Ninboon and Scotland-born Fraser Dalgleish, and the three began work on the project in early 2014. In record time by any standards, they held their grand opening on November 25, 2014, and welcomed over 650 people to try out their new facilities. Locals flooded the gates in anticipation of the island’s new toys, and no one was disappointed. “I’m happy for the boys, but more importantly, I’m happy for the island,” said one local business owner who has lived on the island for a decade, upon visiting the park on its opening day. Anyone concerned about safety needn’t be: Slip ‘N Fly has several lifeguards on duty at all times, radioing to each other through walkie talkies when the water is clear for another slider to take the plunge. A deep zone has been strategically-positioned in the landing area so that even the deepest dives will be safe. Anyone under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a legal guardian at all times, and will not be permitted on the large slides, though they may enjoy the smallest one and the lounge pool. The parties have a capacity of 1,000 people, so those wanting to get in on the action can go to www.SlipNFlyParty.com to find party dates and book tickets in advance to ensure entry. Tickets can also be booked at many of the island’s travel agencies and hotels.

Steeped in a world of history and a visual spectacular to behold, be swept away with Chiang Mai’s Bor Sang Umbrella Festival where the vibrant colors of hand painted umbrellas fill the shop-front lined streets and decorations abound. Bright parasols are iconic to this annual event celebrating Bor Sang village’s reputation as the community that creates Thailand’s most famous umbrellas made from Saa paper, processed from mulberry bark. Legend has it that a monk travelled to neighbouring Myanmar, where he came across Saa paper umbrellas that offered protection against both the sun and the rain. He returned with the production technique and introduced the umbrella to the elders of Bor Sang Village, who added their own artistic skills to create a distinctive colourful, but very practical umbrella. At first it was just a profitable hobby that supplemented the villagers’ earnings from the annual rice crop. However, with time, production of the Saa paper umbrellas prospered, prompting villagers to establish a handicraft cooperative in 1941 that now organises the annual Bor Sang Umbrella and Sankampaeng Handicraft Festival.

ONE COAST Table Tales Dining at Soneva Kiri resort on the picturesque island of Koh Kood 350km southeast of Bangkok is anything but ordinary - and has now been taken to new heights with its Treepod Dining experience.

BRAVE NEW HEIGHTS The Treepod is situated at one of the best vantage points the resort offers; a few yards along the coastal path from the resort’s main facilities on the west facing side of the island. Guests board the rattan bird’s nest at ground level and are then leveraged to new heights. With sumptuous, cushioned seating for up to four diners, guests fasten their leather seatbelts and are gently hoisted 16 feet into the tall, native massang trees. As the pod slowly climbs into the trees, and the rocky shores slowly descend, their waiter exper tly flies through the air on a zipline from a small platform perched half way down the hill. Once each course has been served your waiter zips back up the hill, discreetly positioned a few feet away in case guests wish to add to their order. With birds’ eye views over the peaceful, clear waters surrounding remote Koh Kood , interrupted only by swaying leaves of the massang, a bewildered squirrel or the occasional passing butterfly, dining in the treetops is guaranteed to be one of the most memorable meals of a lifetime.

Breakfast in the Treepod is an utterly peaceful, sublime way to start the day; Lunch offers a shady respite from the heat and breathtaking sunsets from such an unlikely, intimate haven and a candlelit dinner is as close to nature as you can get . The menus follow the jungle themes ‘Canapés in the Canopy’, ‘Forager’s Basket’, ‘Woodland Offerings’, using produce predominantly from the resort’s organic gardens or the island of Koh Kood. In collaboration with Olav Bruin 24h Architects, Louis Thompson designer of the Treepod commented, “It has taken two and a half years from design to final realisation; it is great to see it so appreciated by guests. Even people without a head for heights are thoroughly enjoying it! The element I am particularly proud of is that we actually managed to build it without any bolts or attachments into the actual trees. I strongly feel that the concept has a range of other applications which I am really looking forward to investigating. We are also looking into guests being able to fly on the zip line through the jungle themselves, as there is a certain amount of envy when they watch the waiters!” And if guests’ sweet tooth’s are not yet fully satisfied, they are just a 5 minute stroll from Soneva Kiri’s ice cream parlour with an incredible 65 flavours of homemade ice cream or the chocolate room filled with many varieties of chocolates, organic bon bons and truffle temptations. www.soneva.com/soneva-kiri/treepod-dining

From The Land Down Under

words by Jade Moore

With a guitar by his side, a mixed bag of musical innovation and a voice to rival some of the greats, Australian singer-songwriter & producer Oliver Jones has been making his mark in the musical world one track at a time. With Koh Samui his current home and professional playground, this real nice bloke is soon to broaden his horizons and share his voice with many more. How long have you been living and playing in Samui and what brought you to Thailand? I’ve lived here now for just over 12 months and performed about 270 gigs since I arrived last December. I moved to Thailand to play to different people on holiday and to live in paradise. haha You sing and play guitar – tell us about your earliest memory of music. My parents had an old “8 track player” remember those? hahaha…showing my age! Big VHS size cassette tape. We only had 2 or 3 tapes. I must have known every word and melody on those tapes. I was probably around 5 or 6 years old. My favourite was Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge over Troubled Water. Still love that album! Who are your musical heroes – those who have inspired you to become the musician that you are. Obviously The Beatles, but I learnt how to play guitar from AC/DC records jamming along with them and I learnt singing and harmonies from bands like Boston, Queen and ELO. I had recording equipment too so I think that was very helpful to hear yourself back and make improvements.

Tell us about the most favourite gig you have ever played I played guitar for Daryl Braithwaite at “Hamish and Andy’s Farewell” bash. It was at Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. The gig was only one song, but while I was backstage, U2 turned up as a surprise guest. They were in town on tour. It was pretty surreal. Everyone just went silent when they walked in like they were royalty! hahaha Very memorable day for me! Have you ever played with anyone internationally famous? I performed with Colin Hay from Men at Work. We played “Down Under” at a massive Aussie party in Munich, Germany for FIFA World Cup celebrations 2006. It was a big highlight for me as he is one of my favourite singers. Give us your Desert Island Discs selection 1. Radiohead - The Bends 2. ACDC - Powerage 3. Pink Floyd - The Wall 4. Boston - Boston 5. Men at Work - Business as Usual Name 1 song that you are embarrassed to admit you secretly like. Waterloo by ABBA or any Duran Duran stuff! haha... What does 2015 hold for you? I have a trip to Marbello, Spain on the cards for July. I’m also talking with a GM from a big resort in The Maldives about some shows there too. I love Samui and it’s booming, so I will definitely make it my base home for the future. But being a musician, it’s alway nice to travel and perform. www.oliverjones.com.au One Coast Magazine

Born in Brittany, France Cecilia Pitre has travelled the world with a glass of Champagne in her hand. Owner and Managing Director of BCBG Party Style, she is now one of Phuket’s most well-known socialites

You’ve spent time in many locations around the world, what brought you to Thailand? I arrived in Thailand in 2005 with my boyfriend at that time who was orginally coming to buy a diving business in Koh Tao, then for some unfor tunate reasons (tsunami) plans changed but we still made it and star ted to travel around all over Thailand and finally settled in Pattaya. This is where I was lucky enough to star t a job as a TV presenter for the first English speaking channel of Chonburri! As life and people change, we went our separate ways and I was then given the oppor tunity to star t a career with the Accor Group for over 8 years as the Food & Beverage Business Developer for Pullman G. Living in Thailand is fantastic and there are always the chance to meet new people, go to some great events and it was in Phuket at a par ty that I organised in Dec 2013 that I met Georges Dufresne who was running Le Versace Restaurant in Patong at the time. We fell in love and well the rest is history. Phuket has since become my home. You’re very well known on the party circuit of Phuket and throw some amazing events, where does your inspiration come from? Hahhaha the inspiration for my infamous par ties came at a very young age. I have always been a par ty animal and going out as much as I could.... I just love to enjoy and having fun with friends. After almost 10 years in Thailand my network became so big that people star ted to ask me ‘where to find this?‘ and ‘do you know this or that?’ – I star ted to become ‘Par ty Central’ and the inspiration for each event comes naturally and I feed off what my friends and the people of Thailand seem to want and are looking for. I’ve done Foam on Boat par ties, the famous G Sessions Beach Par ty in Pattaya – we try and do fantastic and varied events – all of which are fun and have great DJs and enter tainment. The most impor tant thing is that everyone has fun, and so far there have been no complaints! Name the Who’s Who that attend some of your parties or stayed in your hotel, Le Versace? There have been many faces and some great times with famous actors, singers, DJ’s and more from around the world. We have been lucky enough to have DJ Mr Mike from Switzerland, DJ Sabrina Terrence from Germany, as well as Steve Aoki and Cut Killer for different event as well as interviewed him, oh and Calvin Harris who was staying at Pullman Pattaya Hotel G and I was lucky enough to spend some time chatting to him. Of course there are always load of local famous Thai people from the scene that attend and visit, which we always love. What can we look forward to from you in 2015? For 2015 I would like to par ty more, throw more events and just have a great time ha ha ha! Aside from my par ties, hotel and event, I am hoping that the group I founded on Facebook ‘Phuket Professional & Fun Ladies’ (PP&FL) keeps growing in members and popularity. I have hosted a multitude of events on since its launch in July 2014, and this year we are going to see many many more. We will be hosting events at locations all across Phuket with a wide variety of women joining up for everything from sharing hobbies & interest workshops, health & fitness sessions, going wild shopping sprees, to private villa gettogethers, fine dining, fun filled girl’s nights out as well as dress up theme par ties. ecocoasthabitat Doves breed for life and therefore only have one mate and the relationship between the two mates is that of equality - 50/50 - making them the perfect symbolic gesture for any special wedding day. Speaking with Dorra Lemancz yk, owner of Event Doves on the island of Samui, it is easy to see why she has fallen in love with doves and how easily we fell for these magical white birds of flight. Trained by Dorra, the 50 stunning birds are cared for and kept keep humanely and in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible. Their home is a coop approximately 16ft long, 4ft wide and 15ft tall which sits on stilts in order to give the doves extra protection from predators and replicate their natural habitat. The birds are free to fly outside wherever they want every day and normally fly in a flock and never alone. Fed a special imported diet from Belgium, the birds are kept fit and healthy on yellow split pea and added vitamins along with volcanic grit in order to help them digest their food and as the birds are free range they also eat grass from the estate and forage daily.

Starting with only 8 doves from Bangkok, Dorra trained the birds each day taking them a little further away from their coop and releasing them although these days the older birds train the younger ones which keeps them as close to their natural habits as possible. The Doves have been to all parts of the island to be released and then fly home as part of their training process and incredibly, doves can fly for approximately 600 miles and around 10 hours per day and can fly around 60/70MPH. For weddings and celebrations the doves are put into their baskets and taken to the location of the event and the birds get extremely excited with their pending release, as they know they can soon race each other back to the est ate. To allow them to be as naturally stress-free as possible, Dorra always asks the event organiser for plenty of time for birds to fly home, as they cannot fly at night and it is important that they also have time to stop and graze on their journey back. Dorra also offers once a month a free release to a charity and normally takes approx 12 baskets (30 doves). She does this in order this in order to give something back to the Koh Samui community, and has previously done charity releases for Vikasa Yoga and Nakon Si Thamarat Orphans. w w w.eventdoves.webs.com
