Perhaps, the colour that engulfed the senses of British fashion designer Jasper Conran while designing his SS16 collection is green. He played with it in different forms on the dresses which really had a classic, contemporary and sublime feel.We know why! Because he is so good at capturing the thematic essence of his collections as always, it established an effortless connection with the fashionistas’ mood. On top of that, the variety in the collection also stood out as women often look for to go about their lives without a hitch dressed up in the best of the best.

We live in an age where our dressing sense is constantly being driven by the sheer idea of how technology can make it more advanced. And when it comes to this sort of thing, the famous Japanese brand “Issey Miyake” comes out on top. Since the launch of it by the designer Issey Miyake in 1970, its motto has always been about fusing technology into the mainstream garments yet retaining their functional purpose. His curiosity to experiment with fabrics ultimately led him to invent the socalled “PLEATING TECHNIQUE” in the late 1980s. He always believed in going beyond the conventional way of designing clothes. Even though he
retired from the company in1997 because of the old age, he is still active in terms of overseeing various lines that make up the prestigious brand. Like him, another hugely talented designer named Yoshiyuki Miyamae is keeping the brand ethos alive as its creative director. This time, working alongside his talented team, he pioneered one-of-a-kind technique called “Steam Stretch”. It incorporates the essentials of PLEATS and A-POC (a piece of cloth) that have always breathed the Issey Miyake brand identity and so easily triumph over other brands. "The structures in the AW15-16 collection have been created inspired by the natural world, such as infinite colors reminiscent of a kaleidoscope, snow crystals, and swirling seashells," says Yoshiyuki Miyamae, creative director of Issey Miyake. To
the less acquainted traveller, naming more than two of the UAE’s seven emirates can prove challenging. With Abu Dhabi and Dubai traditionally battling it out for the nation’s tourism top spot, a new contender is emerging with a justifiable pedigree of its own. Ras Al Khaimah, once known as one of the UAE’s sleepier emirates, is capitalising on the allure of its easy-going persona to become the destination of choice for holidaymakers looking for stimulation beyond the glossy shopping malls. Though not oil-rich like its neighbours, this rustic location boasts untapped natural resources above ground, with the beautiful and dramatic Al Hajar Mountains, azure blue sea with white beaches, red sandy deserts and lush green plains providing a welcome alternative to its urban rivals. Combined with a rich heritage dating back over 5000 years, numerous historical sites, forts and abandoned villages, and its renowned tradition of local pearl diving, times are changing for the former sleeping giant. Quick to capitalize on in this burgeoning hospitality horizon, the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah opened its doors in August 2013 and soon established itself as one of the UAE’s leading hotels. With its combination of luxuriously appointed accommodations and unparalleled ‘True Waldorf Service’, this global luxury brand of Hilton Worldwide has built a reputation capable of pleasing even the most discerning of guests. The Gallery HBA London was tasked with crafting an interior design that channels the rugged outdoors of Ras Al Khaimah into the perfect serene retreat. From the moment guests enter, they are immersed in an ambience woven from the ancient history, tradition and culture of the UAE while acknowledging the Waldorf Astoria’s New York flagship with Art Deco style touches - crafting a delicate marriage of traditions.

Designer Inge Moore, president of HBA International's European division explains: “While the design framework is unmistakably Waldorf Astoria, the Ras Al Khaimah hotel also uniquely belongs to its location. We wove together local stories and culture and reinterpreted them within a contemporary idiom suited to today’s global travellers who confidently seek one type of experience one day and another type of experience on the next.” The lobby’s design and palette are derived from the centuriesold practice of pearl diving in the islands sparkling waters. Behind the reception desks, framed wall panels recall the colours of the sea; covered in turquoise silk, they have been meticulously hand-stitched with sequins in a flowing wave pattern. In the centre of the lobby lies the “pearl” of the hotel itself, a six metre high steel and champagne gold clock designed by Smith of Derby Ltd. Based upon the ancient astrolabe, its five rotating prayer rings determine the exact prayer times each day for the Islamic faith. Modelled on a compass, the clock’s faces are decorated with turquoise glass accents and the clock has been engraved with a cherished phrase extracted from a traditional Bedouin poem, “From your homeland travel abroad to find glory”. Each and every Waldorf Astoria hotel around the globe has a clock as one of its signature attributes. In addition to displaying three specially commissioned sepiatoned sketches of the Sheikhs, including the ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Al Qasimi, the lobby has bespoke artwork conjuring-up the underwater world of divers. British artist Ann Carrington created four pieces expressly for the hotel, made entirely from mother-of-pearl buttons that have been sewn in the pattern of fan coral onto taupe silk. Further along the ground level is a calligraphy collection in Kufic, the earliest form of Arabic script that was used to write the first copies of the Qur’an. With no detail left unturned, the lobby’s floor pays homage to Ras Al Khaimah’s geography with a trio of coloured marble: cream for the beach, ochre for the desert and red for the mountains. Flowing from the lobby is Peacock Alley, which similar to its clock, is a signature lounge found in all Waldorf Astoria hotels. Though large in size it feels surprisingly intimate, HBA London having ensured cultural privacy considerations are well accommodated. Here, the design mixes local touches with contemporary style inspired by the brand’s New York City flagship. A ring of banquettes encircle a tiered, marble fountain, providing a delicate watery screen for the most private of conversations. A spectacular chandelier designed by Baroncelli with handcrafted glass elements suggest stylised peacock feathers is the centre piece. Intricate geometric paper sculptures formed from barley straw with flax fibres and gold leaf have been especially commissioned from artist Gill Wilson.

The hotel’s 346 deluxe rooms and suites continue the concept of being a waterside oasis from the desert. When asked what her favourite aspect of the hotel’s design was, Moore answered, “I really like the calmness and serenity of the beautiful and spacious typical guestrooms.” Though originally built to be apartments, its smallest guest room measures an ample 56m² and took three years to renovate under the careful guidance of architect Maurizio Papiri of Studio Papiri, before HBA London took control. Neutral toned textiles set a soothing tone, punctuated by splashes of turquoise such as the scrolled lines of the wool carpet and the swirled, handmade solid glass spheres which sit atop the timber headboards. Individually carved by woodworkers, these have a circular Islamic pattern custom-designed by The Gallery.
28
O N E CO A S T
The suites have been designed to provide exclusive guests with the utmost in privacy. Lavish finishes abound; a grand white marble staircase with a dramatic black balustrade evokes the glamour of Chanel; in the bedrooms, bespoke headboards are adorned with mother-of-pearl inlays; and contemporary art mixes with traditional Islamic detailing. Located on the hotel’s uppermost levels, each suite enjoys spectacular views from its private balconies. “We are encapsulating the thread that runs through all of the interiors – reinventing past wonders into new magic,” Moore concludes. Though referring to the iconic lobby clock, it’s clear to see that this idea holds true for the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah’s design throughout.

Fall Winter 2015, Jean Claude Jitrois pays tribute to Paris’ answer to the legendary Studio 54, Palace, in it’s heyday during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Entitled "Lucid Wonderland" the collection takes inspiration from the intoxicating world of the wild party girls who frequented The Palace; who, with their relentless charisma and impeccable looks, blurred the line between effortless glamour and the rock, punk and disco movements of the era. Looking to muses such as Amanda Lear, Jerry Hall and Grace Jones; the collection features 1970’s inspired trapeze cut dresses and mini-skirts constructed in stretch velvet and lambskin and brought to life with Pop Art inspired floral or animal leather embroidery and accented with Swarovski crystals. The 1970’s silhouette is explored further through tunics worn over flared stretch leather pants, floor length coats and signature catsuits with ultra plunging necklines.

We can now say with smugness and a lot more curio that the
fashion world is really in a phase of exciting makeover. After all, where the ember of creativity flows wildly, there would always be possibilities to create something out of the box. Fashion is the podium where it counts the most. Let’s say something which seems belligerent and invasive in tenor! No wonder the sorts of dresses designed by the Polish-born costume designer Katarzyna Konieczka speak volumes about this reality slowly sinking in and where the future of fashion holds in essence. I would say it’s a great opportunity to celebrate unconventional dressing norms and in so doing embrace an outlandish style culture with open arms.

Much more than a spa massage, our award wining best spa in Asia Pacific is a true experience.
Review from the Adviser Khun Praewprawlin The subtle smells of essential oils, herbal tea and genuine Thai hospitality from my Therapist were already putting me at ease and I could feel the stress from my hectic Phuket lifestyle slowly easing the weight off my shoulders. I first went through a spa questionnaire with my therapist as it was explained to me that each treatment could use a variety of herbs and essential oils that could be personally adapted for each individual. Then it was time for a refreshing shower before entering the white toned spa room with its large jacuzzi and twin beds, low calming music and the comforting aroma oils just led further to the relaxing ambience and putting my mind and body at peace. First my feet were cleaned and pampered while my therapist explained what the 120 minute treatment would entail and at the end I opened my hand and what a beautiful surprise to find a warm heart shaped stone had been placed there. First treatment was a scrub with warm oils to clean and massage my legs and it was already difficult to stay awake. Turning over the process repeated and then with hot water cleansing to prepare for the oil massage itself. Next was the Tibet style oil massage with hot stones. I felt so peaceful, so refreshed as my muscles unwound and my blood circulation improved. Body first then face with gentle acupressure and warm oil was gently poured on my forehead before my head and neck were gently and professionally massaged.A final head and shoulder massage after I sat up and then led back to the sauna area with fresh coconut and tropical fruits waiting. I relaxed about 15 minutes feeling the invigorating but relaxing treatment put my heart, body and soul completely at ease before a final shower and back into the real world. It was no surprise that Infinite Luxury Spa were the Spa Award Winners, with their professional, kind and welcoming professional therapists. It was absolutely a delightful and relaxing day just an amazing experience that you really should try.

Time to Slow Down, Time to Breathe
Photo: Chayanisa Wetchasart
“
“The best way to capture moments is to pay attention. This is how we cultivate mindfulness. Mindfulness means being awake. It means knowing what you are doing.”
”
~Jon Kabat-Zinn
Do you ever feel like life is just passing you by? Months blend into one another, days blur, and it feels like you are running from one meeting to another. Welcome to the modern world, fast paced, unforgiving and never slow. This all builds up to a lot of stress, feeling disconnected and wishing for moments of slow. But how? How can we slow down in this frantic world we now find ourselves in? Slowing down boils down to a single concept: mindfulness. Being mindful is about paying attention on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally. The outcome is the full awareness of life's unfolding experiences from moment to moment. Easier said than done, right? Staying present in the moment when your unruly monkey mind has you focused on what you have to do or haven’t done, isn’t easy. Let's take a moment to think about the transformative power of mindfulness in modern life. Everyday we face many ups and downs. Much of this rollercoaster ride has to do with where we are placing our attention. Much of our time is spent either in future based thinking,
42
O N E CO A S T
or worrying about the past. Subsequently we spend so little of our time in the present moment, that more often than not, it feels like we are always trying to be somewhere else, other than where we are right now. The day seems to be consumed with fears, the fear of failure, fear that we don't have the right abilities, fear that we won’t find the right solutions to our problems, fear of what the future holds. All of this attention on either the past or the future has an unintended consequence, it tends to speed up time. In other words, it is the cause of much of our frenzied state. But thankfully there is a solution. If you are able to be more mindful, you then have the ability to slow down time. This happens because you do so fully embracing, non-judgmentally, the unfolding of experience from moment to moment as it happens. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it is possible. Subsequently you may be thinking, “okay, that sounds useful but how?” As simple as my next piece of advice may sound, this very tool has had a massive impact on my ability to slow my life down.
Body&Mindmindful lifestyle Breathing Slowness Back Into Your Life The essential skill I taught myself to master in this modern frantic world is to breathe. But not any old breathing, such as the unconscious kind most of us engage in throughout the day — but rather purposeful focused breathing.Your breath is one of the most critical links between your mind, body and the outer world. Being mindful of your breath then, is an ideal technique for centering your frantic mind-body-world relationship. In doing so you become more grounded. Being mindful of your breath slows your thinking down, which makes time slow down, as you are now more connected to the present moment. To understand how this works, you need to know a little bit about the importance of your breath, and how it connects to your inner world — which is completely outside of your conscious awareness. Your brain sits on top of your spine, which is the main highway for your nervous system, feeding information about what’s happening in your body from your peripheral nervous system (PNS) to your central nervous system (CNS) to be processed by your brain.
balances the sympathetic nervous system. Without the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) for balance, the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) nervous system can overwhelm the body with excess energy and adrenaline, causing dizziness, spaciness, confusion, fear, anxiety, and/or other forms of hyper arousal and distress. This is where proper breathing comes in. Conscious Breath Whereas most ANS actions are involuntary, some actions, such as breathing, work in tandem with the conscious mind. This means that by focusing specifically on your out-breath, you will be able to actively engage your parasympathetic nervous system. This is not only the best, but also the only tool at your disposal to directly affect your ANS. It’s the only chance we all have to downshift the sympathetic nervous system from the adrenaline-fueled overdrive that typically happens when facing the frantic world we live in. Bottom line: Your out-breath is one of the few ANS processes that you can have conscious control over.
Your peripheral nervous system (PNS) has two parts and functions: 1. External: Your sensory-somatic nervous system is responsible for gathering information about your external environment. 2. Internal: Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) is responsible for monitoring and controlling your internal organs (e.g., heart, lungs, viscera, and glands). Your ANS also affects your motor nerves, which determine how your body acts and reacts in response to internal and external stimuli. Your ANS operates mostly beyond your conscious control. It functions ‘behind the scenes,’ usually unconsciously and involuntary. (By contrast, your sensory-somatic nervous system responds directly to your conscious will.) The ANS perceives your body’s internal environment, and after information is processed in the central nervous system (CNS), the ANS regulates the functions of the internal environment. Most of these functions are carried out completely unconsciously. The ANS has two subdivisions: the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.
Sympathetic nervous system: Stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for what it perceives as an emergency. It kicks into action in high stress situations, such as when you’re afraid, but crucially for most of us, it is equally engaged when a threat is imagined. Sometimes referred to as the fight-or-flight system, the sympathetic nerves direct more blood to the muscles and the brain. Heart rate and blood pressure increase while blood flow to the digestive and eliminative organs decreases. Most of us in the modern world are on a diet of sympathetic overload, trying to meet deadlines, dealing with toxic co-workers, and a grumpy, aggressive boss. Without even realising it, our sympathetic nervous system is running on overdrive, day in, and day out. If you answered yes to the opening line of this article, “Do you ever feel like life is just passing you by?” then welcome to the world of sympathetic dominance.
Parasympathetic nervous system: Whereas the sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for action, the parasympathetic nervous system calms it down, bringing your body back to a state of balance. The parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the rest-and-digest system,
Because most of us spent little attention on how we breathe — focusing on the out breath to activate the calming, slowing down affects of the parasympathetic nervous system takes practice. Being mindful of your outbreath in high pressure situations, or simply when the world seems to be passing you by in a frenzy, will not only help you balance your fight-or-flight response, it will also enable you to remain more present. It is specifically in that moment of presence, that life slows down to a more manageable pace.
“
Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.
”
~Thich Nhat Hanh
Try this right now: breathe out hard. Make sure you can hear your breath and try to think of something at the same time. Amazing, right? While you're breathing out, your mind clears. I view this technique as a way of flushing my thoughts. As long as I’m focusing on my out-breath, I find that I’m able to quiet my mind and manage my emotions more effectively. What follows is the exact exercise I use to practice this skill. With enough practice, this technique will shift over to those frenzied places in your daily work and life where you need it most. Parasympathetic Breathing Exercise 1. Focus on the heart: Breathe in and out through the heart. 2. Relaxed in-breath: Keep your throat open. Breath falls into your belly. Ribs move with each breath. Not too deep and not too shallow. 3. Exhale: Focus on the exhale as this engages the parasympathetic nervous system. In-breath, heart rhythm quickens; out-breath, heart slows. 4. Smooth Change: The change between breaths is gentle and slow, like an ocean wave rolling onto the shore, lingering, and then flowing back out to sea.

Weight loss The festive holidays are over and it’s time to get back on track. We are seeing a rise in the amount of people wanting to lose weight and be healthy. But weight loss is not just about losing fat, it is about feeling more confident and happy with yourself. It is about detoxifying your body, and leading a healthier lifestyle while getting fit. If you set a goal to get fitter, to be able to run further, or lift heavier weights then you will take the focus off obsessing about weight loss. When you stop thinking about it and stop stressing about the weight loss, then it will come with time when you achieve your goals. Apply this analogy to weight loss. Two glasses are sitting in front of you, both filled with water. The first glass is dirty and covered in muck while the second is sparkling clean. If you were to drink out of one of them, which would it be? The obvious choice would be the clean glass because it won’t make you sick but every day people start new healthy lifestyles and set a goal to lose weight, tone up or even just improve their general well-being while drinking out of the dirty glass. Let me explain – apply this to your body. Year after year you have eaten processed foods, drank alcohol or smoked without detoxifying your body. The effects of your unhealthy lifestyle have started to become clear and you have noticed that you feel tired, bloated and generally run down. So, you decide to embark on a new journey – eating moderately healthy, limiting your alcohol and exercising more frequently. However, you notice that although you’re experiencing small changes, you still feel the same. This is because your body is the dirty glass.
Over the years, toxins have built up and cannot be released without being detoxified and even though you’re now putting the clean water into the glass – the glass is still dirty and cannot be cleared until you get rid of the toxins from your body. Now is your time to start nourishing your body and undo years of damage.Thanyapura offers you the chance to detoxify your body and help flush out any harmful toxins so that you can start drinking from the clean glass. Our facilities stretch beyond healthy eating and exercising. Within our impressive Phuket sports facility, we offer you the chance to refresh your mind, educate yourself on a healthy future and take part in a 7-day detox that aims to transform you and your body. What is Creativity? Interview with Ami & Jyoti Sukhadia, owners and creative jewellery designers for “The Royal Gallery”
Jyoti Sukhadia (Left) Ami Sukhadia (Right)
“Creativity is the process of bringing something new to life. Creativity requires passion and commitment. It brings to our consciousness what was previously hidden and points to a new direction. Creativity is characterized by the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to generate completely new styles and ideas.
What is Creativity?
One Coast Magazine have been extremely fortunate in meeting and interviewing two wonderful sisters from The Royal Gallery” Ami and Jyoti. These creative and inspirational people were kind enough to give One Coast a short insight into their colorful lives and work creating some of the worlds most exquisite jewellery.

Focusabout her Could you explain a little about how your family started in the gem stone business and how this progressed through your father to all of your sisters and the now famous Royal Gallery jewelry business? My Father Mr. Rajnikant Sukhadia, started in the Gems & Jewellery Business around 1958. He started off by getting stones & beads from India and selling tham in Bangkok & Hong Kong where he was travelling most of the time. In 1977, he settled down in Bangkok, slowly establishing the stone business here. My Sisters & I, joined him in 1994, to learn about colored stones. Later in 1999, he encouraged us and later we ventured out to doing our own business. Our first step in the jewellery industry was with the introduction of Sukhothai Jewellery (24k Gold Enamel Jewellery). Following that, we got into diamond & gold jewellery. Our main focus was manufacturing for wholesale customers and making collections for big brand names. As time went by, gold prices increased so we added a silver collection to our line of production. As the market was fluctuating in gold prices and unstable increases and decreases of exchange rates, these factors were taken into consideration when we decided to open our Jewellery Showroom – The Royal Gallery. We wanted to explore the wide world of exquisite designs and we thought that this gallery would be the best place for us to exhibit that Creativity, Design & Beauty!. Every woman wants what the other doesn’t have !!! We are later planning to expand and introduce watches in the Gallery. You are both super qualified in the gem stone business could you tell us a little about your qualifications? Ami Sukhadia – Bachelors in Hotel Management from Abac University, Superbly qualified in designing, arts and production technicality. Jyoti Sukhadia – Bachelors and Masters Degree in Business Administration from ABAC and GIA Thailand Graduated Gemologist. The Royal Gallery always has a presence at most of the worlds prestigious Jewellery shows could you tell us about your favorites? Our parent Company Paracolor Co., Ltd has exhibited in many shows, of which our favorites are The JCK Las Vegas Show & The September Hong Kong Gems & Jewellery Show. Having the pleasure of actually visiting the Royal Gallery and seeing for myself some of your extraordinary and intricate work could you tell us where your inspiration comes from? Our parents are the biggest inspiration. Being a family with only daughters (5 sisters), we are very proud to have the support of our parents both financially as well as emotionally. In India women aren’t given as much freedom as we have been given by our parents. My father always encourages us that even if the market is bad we have to hang in there. He is always there to support us, our mom encourages us to be strong. There are so many times when we go to shows & we are the only booth with girls, that it becomes socially difficult to accept and so it was always a challenge to strive for being the best & successful. What color and styles of jewelry are now coming into fashion? In 2016, the color multi-color is coming into fashion, long earrings and simple bracelets are the next trend till the year end. Where is your Gallery in Thailand? We are located @"The Royal Gallery" Room No. 113-114, 1st Floor "Golden Place Plaza" 153 Rajdamri Road, Lumpini, Pathumwan, Bangkok 10330 Thailand.

We got an award for a beautiful serpentine silver necklace made in Rubies and multicolor sapphires. Yes, we have had the famous Becky Russell come to our store; she bought and adored our Jewellery. Why have you chosen Thailand as your base? Our family moved to Thailand many years ago. My father was already in the Gem Stones trade so it was easier for us to get into jewellery manufacturing. Thailand is an international port for doing many kinds of businesses and it has a growing and emerging jewellery market as well.

ISLAND DOMINICA, ERIKA AND OPPORTUNITY
Introducing Dominica The Commonwealth of Dominica, commonly known as Dominica, is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea. It is distinct and unconnected to the Dominican Republic, another Caribbean nation. Its name (pronounced domin-EE-cuh) in Latin means "Sunday," which was the day on which it was discovered by Christopher Columbus. Dominica's pre-Colombian name was Wai'tu kubuli, which means, "Tall is her body." Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the indigenous people of the island, Caribs. Some 3,000 Caribs still live on Dominica and are the only pre-Colombian population remaining in the eastern Caribbean. Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" due to its natural beauty. It is one of the youngest islands in the Lesser Antilles, and is still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity. The island features lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plant, animal, and bird species. The Sisserou parrot is featured on the national flag.
52
O N E CO A S T
Geography The capital is Roseau. Dominica is largely covered by rainforest and is home to the world's largest boiling lake. Dominica also has many waterfalls, springs and rivers. Some plants and animals thought to be extinct on surrounding islands can still be found in Dominica's forests. The volcanic nature of the island and the lack of sandy beaches have made Dominica a popular scuba diving spot. Dominica is home to several protected areas, including Cabrits National Park. The local people like to say that Dominica has 365 rivers. It is said that when his royal sponsors asked Christopher Columbus to describe this island in the "New World," he crumpled a piece of parchment roughly and threw it on the table. This, Columbus explained, "is what Dominica looks like— completely covered with mountains with nary a flat spot." Morne Trois Pitons National Park is a tropical forest blended with scenic volcanic features. It was recognized as a World Heritage Site on April 4, 1995. Currently it is the only such site in the Caribbean. The only two major cities are Roseau and Portsmouth. In August this year a tropical storm of unexpected proportions battered then beautiful tropical Caribbean island of Dominica, One Coast Magazine met up with the Prime Minister of Dominica Hon. Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit in Bangkok at Aid For Dominica, A Fundraising Dinner by Royal Dominica and Harvey Law Group to speak with Hon. Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit about the storm. First of all on behalf of One Coast magazine and our readers welcome to Thailand and we wish you much success with the fundraising event.
Lifestylehot spot 1. Can you tell us a little about Dominica Island? We are an independent nation and we received our independence in 1978. We are a political democracy with elections every 5 years, we are part of the Caribbean community and United Nations framework. 2.How big is the Island? It is actually one of the biggest in the Eastern Caribbean, in terms of land size it is one of the biggest but in population one of the smallest. Land area is actually 390 square miles. Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the Right Honorable Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit with One Coast Magazine’s Editor Crispin Paton-Smith
3. What does the Island have as a population and what is the main source of income? A population of 72,000 people and our main export is our cultural produce and we also do some light manufacturing. We also heavily promote tourism and international financial services. 4. When did the storm hit Dominica and how long did it last? The storm hit on August 27th 2015, we had received unprecedented rainfall as much as 15 inches in less than 5 hours and it was unusual rain which caused significant damage to the infrastructure and affected many homes. 7229 people were impacted by the storm directly. 5. What was the actual devastation and death toll from the storm? 30 people dead and major infrastructural damage to roadways and the cultural and social impact was huge. 6. Dominica was declared a national emergency for global aid supplies, have you been satisfied with the world’s response? We have been extremely satisfied with the response by our global partners and individuals for emergency assistance, all told over 49 countries responded, over 50 NGO’s and corporations responded and many thousands of individuals and families from across the globe. Individuals, some actually self mobilized themselves in a spontaneous manner and you can see here from Thailand we are here on invitation from the Harvey Law Group who are plainly taking their corporate responsibility very seriously and have organized this activity here in Thailand to sensitize not only Thailand but the Asian community on the impact of the storm and they have organized this fundraising dinner on behalf of Dominica. The response has been very good. 7. Now months later how is Dominica getting on with the restoration and reconstruction? Some countries have made some pledges for example and the next step is to mobilize forces for the reconstruction. The Government of Venezuela has made a commitment for 300 homes, 50 of which we have received already. And we are now in discussions with the British Government, Prime Minister Cameron announced a few weeks ago a new aid package for some Caribbean countries including Dominica. So we are in discussions with them on the mobilization of that aid and to see how Dominica can benefit from it. We have already had a visit from the British High Commissioner for the Caribbean this week looking at and visiting for himself areas of damage, and of course there is the Chinese Government that will help and assist. A number of partners and the European Union as a whole have already indicated that they will assist in the reconstruction fees.
8. What is still critically needed? What is critically needed is technical expertize as the government has taken a very strong position that we have to build back better, and part of the process of building back better is to ensure you get the best technical advice the world has to offer. Because of the number of variables and considerations one must consider in the vulnerabilities of certain communities and the design of bridges and roads to mitigate against the heavy impact of the storms on our islands. So that is one area that we need and we are going to require assistance in the reconstruction of homes and residental communities and investments, of course if people could visit our country as tourists that would certainly help the economy and generate funds. So a family may not be able to provide us with any assistance but if they have a holiday planned next year then my advice would be to come to Dominica to enjoy your vacation. 9. In considering investment, you have on Dominica a citizenship by investment program which many of our readers would find very interesting could you explain a little about this? It is an important program for us as it promotes Dominica and the second citizenship. There are two components to the program, one is a direct cash contribution to the Dominica Government and those funds are used for job creation, poverty elevation, economic development and social development. Then we have the leading arm of the program so for example if you wanted to become a Dominican citizen you can invest in a project. So we have several projects that the government has considered, we have the Royal Dominica Hotel, the Silver Beach Resort,Tranquility Beach Resort and we also have a hotel under the brand Kempinski in Dominica, which is largely owned by the royal family of Thailand. 10. How will donations from these projects be used? They are being used for the Economic Development of Dominica and for example a lot of these funds will be directed towards reconstruction and this is why we are soliciting investments from those who wish to have a second citizenship, Dominica provides a very good platform for this and is internationally recognized as a reputable program with high levels of transparency. Our due diligence process is very robust. We put very detailed care in the due diligence and the reports. 11. What investment opportunities in Real Estate are available in Dominica? I think people could come and build a home or a villa for example in Dominica and actually own it. Here you can own your own property and have an independent title for it registered in your own name. We have a common law system that would protect your property from any state acquisition. If the state would need to acquire your property it would have to visit you and give you a market price and market value for your property. You are welcome to invest in the tourism business, hotels, guesthouses and villas alike. 12. Do you plan on increasing the minimum investment? There have been discussions about it and Parliament have announced there will be an increase, which will take effect in August 2016. So anytime from August 2016 we are certainly going to review the contributions. 13. Will you be visiting other countries on your tour? Yes tomorrow I will be visiting Hanoi in Vietnam then onto Hong Kong. 14. OK those were my questions is there anything you would like to add? I would just like to indicate that it is important that the Asian Communities look towards the Caribbean, it’s a stable region and it’s a region that offers affordable opportunities to invest and to make a profit and I don’t think the distance should make any difference. Dear Prime Minister, on behalf of One Coast Magazine I would like to thank you for your time ad wish you much success on your fund raising.

Aid for Dominica, A Fundraising Dinner by Royal Dominica and Harvey Law Group
Citizenship by Investment programs in the Caribbean: Passport against Investment, what’s the (real) deal? “The world is becoming borderless in many respects. There are parts of the world that are less peaceful than others. People who take up new citizenship in stable and peaceful places are taking advantage of opportunities that will give them peace of mind for future generations.” These were the recent words of the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the Right Honorable Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit, during a recent visit to Bangkok and Hanoi as he travelled with a delegation of business leaders, lawyers and investment specialists from Harvey Law Group (HLG) before attending the 3rd edition of the prestigious Hong Kong Investment Immigration Summit on November 9th, 2015. Around 20 countries worldwide have enacted attractive investment immigration programs combining the privileges of a permanent residency or citizenship to offer a wide range of benefits: from free education or a healthcare system to the freedom of travelling visa free in up to 150 countries. However, four Caribbean islands (and soon a fifth one) share the market related to Citizenship by Investment Programs (CIP). Who are they and why? St Kitts & Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, the Commonwealth of Dominica and Grenada concentrate in the world investment immigration industry almost 100% of the CIP offer. While those programs have been existing for decades to find alternative source of revenues to the sugar cane and agriculture industry, they were given a second youth not only as a result of the current political and economic worldwide instability but also because of the growing interest of real estate developments in the Caribbean. St Kitts & Nevis approved in 2012 the construction of the first 5 star hotels in the Caribbean under the Park Hyatt brand with a minimum investment eligible to the CIP initially starting at USD400,000 while now on sale at USD450,000. In 2014, Dominica gave the green light to the construction of the Kempinski hotel starting at USD220,000. Soon after, local real estate developers started to use the CIP to renovate their existing hotels and tourism facility to improve the level of services in those islands, even offering titled deeds (instead of shares) on condominiums with prepaid rentals ensuring a 5% return on investment per year. Mr. John Zuliani, owner of the Royal St Kitts Hotel managed to refurbish and upgrade the long-standing hotel of the same name to an outstanding 4-star property. Mr. Zuliani is now replicating his success story to … Dominica launching the Royal Dominica starting at USD250,000 with a CIP status. The real estate investment must generally be kept for a period of four to five years while the citizenship stays for life and even passes through generations.
54
O N E CO A S T
After the expiry of retention period, the investor is entitled to resell and when it is about to get their money back, investors are usually able to advertise their units on the market or resell to … a “new CIP applicant” says HLG Thailand resident partner, Mr. Bastien Trelcat, who further confirms that ”it will be easier and easier to find candidates as real estate products in the Caribbean are more and more sought after based on growing tourism arrivals numbers and … an increasing demand worldwide for CIP eligible products. One must also bear in mind that historically, the minimum investment required is tend to increase proportionally to the recognition of the passport. If you look at CIP investors who bought real estate in Grenada at minimum USD250,000, the same have made a pretty good investment after Grenada obtained Schengen access in May this year leading to change in the minimum investment to USD350,000, i.e. 40% potential appreciation overnight. Dominica will probably adjust accordingly after the island also gained Schengen access one month after Grenada”. On a cost point of view, CIP investors get to access UK and all Commonwealth countries (Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia etc.) for a fraction of the investment they would have to inject in those countries (UK Tier 1 Investment Program starts at a minimum of £2 million, Australia at AUD 5 million). Last but not the least, the islands all offer a very generous tax system making their investment almost tax-free at the exit. Needless to say that many more international brands will be investing in those islands, the very last development of which was announced by Hilton with its beach front “Embassy Suites” project in St Kitts & Nevis due to open in 2017.

The engine is understandably the thing that first draws attention to the Aurora Hellfire OZ26. But there is a lot more to this motorcycle than raw power.
One Coast Magazine has zeroed in on in this issue on the V8 engines for both Coast Drive and here Coast Ride. Using a huge V8 engine in a motorcycle is though rare but not unheard of? But seemingly from the fires of Hell the Aurora Hellfire is something distinctively different not just in raw unadulterated power but also being an absolute ultra bike literally oozing technology that till now has not been found on one single bike. The concept was simple, build the World’s most exotic motorcycle. After a seven year long gestation period in total secrecy, the end result is the Aurora Hellfire OZ26, a no-expense-spared Ultrabike that bristles with innovation. A frameless design, with multilink rear suspension, a Hossack carbon front end and utilizing only the finest components. This awesome creation has a longitudinally positioned, naturally aspirated, fuel injected, 4 valve, DOHC 2,575cc V8 engine delivering over 400hp and 220 lb torque, yet with its brilliant electronic package, this massive but compact engine provides silky smooth delivery of power. Innovation abounds, with a contra-rotating gearbox cancelling out any torque reaction from the engine. 56

The multilink rear end nulls out drive shaft reactions and provides a variable level of anti squat. The sensual carbon Hossack front end not only offers fantastic road feel, but delivers low unsprung weight and proportional antidive, with both front and rear ends controlled by Ohlins TTX electronic shocks. The front end, in conjunction with the Brembo GPX R4 calipers, delivers exceptional braking capability far beyond what the best conventional forks can provide. Fantastic styling by renowned designer Tim Cameron gives the bike an aggressive but visually pleasing stance that looks fast just standing still! From the “Predator” front fairing to the dual plane rear end, this striking visual design also manages to blend-in the classic 60’s F1 look with its exposed carbon intake stacks, all eight of them! The bike’s software features sport/touring/city/ wet/custom modes with 10 level traction control, configurable damping, anti -wheelie and ABS. Gear shifting the 5 speed gearbox is by foot or by handlebar button up/down one gear, or given the bike’s huge torque, you can shift two gears at a time! Power, styling, software, innovation are all harmonized in the Aurora Hellfire OZ26. Be prepared to redefine your limits! The World of motorcycling has a new King. But is the power too much? On the street, full-throttle can only be tried if the road is straight, the transmission is in at least third gear, and the ground is dry.

Livingculture words by Mairead Doohan
Saying I Do in the Desert Breathtaking scenery; glamourous, first-rate, luxury surroundings and year-round sunshine…with all this on offer, it’s easy to see why so many people are choosing the UAE to tie the knot. However, with such an abundance of options it’s hard to know where to start looking! As a couple, your wedding is the first step towards your future together – it is an incredibly emotional and significant day and should always be remembered for the enjoyment you’ve had and not the stress of planning it! As such, choosing the right venue is vital in ensuring your day is as memorable and worry-free as possible. After all wedding dresses are made to measure…why not venues? What to look for when considering venues…. The UAE has a wealth of choices for you – from desert decadence to seaside splendor you are sure to find something that compliments your style. With wedding parties ranging from small intimate groups to crowds of over a thousand, venues are experienced in catering for a variety of tastes. The right venue will set the tone for your day and provide a solid foundation for your theme and décor style. If you crave a touch of glamour and opulence look no further than the Burj Al Arab or the St. Regis in Saadiyat for truly luxurious settings. For a uniquely Arabian experience try the Anantara’s Qasr Al Sarab; this picturesque desert resort will surely allow your guests to be charmed by the true character of the UAE. Alternatively, take advantage of the charismatic white sand coastline and try Zaya Nurai Island for laid back sophistication on a private palm-fringed retreat that all guests will be sure to enjoy. The main thing to remember is that the venue should reflect your character as a couple; this will instantly make you feel more comfortable and you will be more likely to appreciate your big day.

After the ‘I do’s’ retreat to the Regal Ballroom which provides an unparalleled venue as the city’s largest banquet facility and is sure to impress. For an outdoor celebration they offer an expansive, ocean-view terrace for an unforgettable cocktail party or private wedding ceremony. • Maximum capacity: Definitely a resort for the larger parties the Regal Ballroom caters for up to 1700 guests while the terrace can seat up to 500.

Every couple can be assured that they will be provided with the finest services, from customized dining options to bespoke spa treatments to ensure that your dream becomes a reality.’
Top Tips when visiting a venue: When visiting venues don’t be afraid to ask questions; the more the better! Not only do you need to know as much about the venue before you commit but the way the events manager answers your questions will tell you a lot about how they will be on the run-up to your event. A stress-free wedding mostly comes down to a good events manager… so arrive prepared and ready to question! Any good planner will welcome this and should reciprocate in kind. Make sure that they have asked what you want and are not merely trying to push a one-size-fits-all package. Professionals in this area will want to ensure that their venue is capable of meeting your expectations not try to change your vision to fit the venue. With that said, be aware that when asking a million questions the answer might not be what you want. Don’t be put off! Better an honest planner than a meeting full of false promises that will cause more hassle for you later when they can’t be followed through. Have a list of 3 wedding must-haves that your venue must be able to achieve – ask these things up front so you won’t be disappointed later. However, sometimes it is important to be flexible and bow to superior knowledge; remember your wedding planner will have had a great deal of experience planning events in this venue – they will know what can go wrong and, hopefully, the best way to avoid problems. 76

Footprints in the Sand MontAzure Revives Matin Palleros and Twinpalms Magic With Twinpalms Residences MontAzure
Martin Palleros is an architect who was seduced by landscape design early in his career, so perhaps it is fitting that his enduring meisterwerk and calling card is a Phuket luxury resort named for two trees.
MontAzure, not to mention the man tasked with the big picture, creating the overarching masterplan for the entire MontAzure project. Palleros is also designing a sales gallery on part of the absolute beachfront portion of land, scheduled to open in December 2015. It will feature a Twinpalmscreated restaurant right on the pristine pine-fringed beach in North Kamala.
Twinpalms, almost a decade on from its launch, continues to win accolades as the avatar of tropical modern minimalist chic, a temple of effortless cool and timeless style and a playground for A-listers and assorted movers and shakers from Beyonce and Jay Z to Christian Audigier, Tyra Banks and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Positioned at the luxury end of the tourism and second home investment market, MontAzure is the brainchild of three of the most prestigious property and hotel investment groups in Asia.
Buenos Aires-born Palleros, of Tierra Design, conjured an ‘aesthetic masterpiece’, according to Nat Geo Traveller (UK) magazine, and a ‘Garden of Eden’ which seamlessly segues from lush bursts of tropical foliage and serried rows of the eponymous palms to soaring, sacred spaces, interludes of cloistered cool and perfectly judged proportions and pleasing perspectives. The Twinpalms magic also rubbed off on Catch and Bimi Beach Clubs and Palm Seafood Restaurant, also at Surin, hospitality & entertainment concepts that set new benchmarks on the island and became magnets for the right kind of patrons. Perhaps, then, it is also fitting, even fated, that Palleros, now at the height of his powers, finds himself once more designing a project that will bear the two intertwined grey palms of the Twinpalms brand, as well as the elegant hexagonal mark of MontAzure, the exclusive mixed-use community in Kamala district which as phase one has launched a branded residential beachfront condominium project on one of the last direct beachfront sites on the West Coast of the island. For Palleros, as is the designer of Twinpalms Residences
Arch Capital (Hong Kong) and Philean Capital (Singapore), part of Pontiac Land Group, have teamed up with local partner Narai Group (Thailand) to launch what will be Asia's most exceptional residential resort development. "We are genuinely excited to enter into this agreement," said MontAzure Managing Director Roland Bleszynski. "The Twinpalms brand is synonymous with a refined resort experience, and this combined with consistently exceptional standards of hospitality has created strong recognition and above all an extremely loyal following worldwide. "When we entered into discussions we quickly realised that we shared the same values and that through our collaboration we could create a very compelling proposition for buyers as an investment or lifestyle play, as well as an opportunity to be a part of a larger community vision." Palleros is the hero of the hour, the man with the master plan, an architect who could see the forest for the trees, and has the talent and ability to weave nature and the environment into his designs as integral parts of their fabric. A child of the earth, Tierra Design’s principal now flits between his growing practices in Bangkok and Perth, Australia as demand mounts for his holistic, wide-angle approach.
Livingindesign
Some designers see landscape as an inconvenient obstacle to be removed as they make their architect's statement or erect another monument to hubris. Palleros thinks that he shall never see a poem lovely as a tree: his is a world of sensibility and synthesis; juxtapositions of the organic and inorganic, the natural and the man-made, where subtle contrasts between colour, texture and form are reborn as delightful journeys for the eye; design as narrative, vista as vignette. In Palleros' world, design is not a fait accompli to be handed off after completion, already tumbling towards entropy. Rather than seek cheap 'wows' in the here and now, he considers what a
project has the potential to become and designs his creations to age gracefully and even improve over time. Materials are chosen based on their potential for patina, the grace-notes materials accrue with age, like character, such as verdigris on copper, or moss on a roof tile. Palleros uses plants like chess pieces, strategically located to soften view planes, create dramatic shadowplay or spread their tendrils into intricate creeping organic screens and lattices. Despite his love for nature, you won’t find many soft curves or fluffy bits in a Palleros design. O N E CO A S T
89
A lover of the linear, Palleros is ahead of the curve and knows a straight line is the shortest distance between two points. Palleros designs do not meander or waste your time; here is a man who finds himself at vanishing point, painting with perspectives like an architectural Picasso.. Twinpalms Residences MontAzure will comprise of 75 luxury condominiums, with 100 metres of absolute beach frontage, located between Millionaire's Mile and the Amanpuri Headland. It will be operated and managed by Twinpalms when it is completed towards the end of 2017. The project presents the first phase of MontAzure's 454 rai site masterplan, valued at THB15 billion, which will feature a number of integrated components, including a branded five-star hotel, four beach clubs for public and private use, 13 exclusive private hillside estate villas and a 200 rai nature reserve. Kamala, neighbouring the famed ‘Millionaire’s Mile’, ranging from oceanfront to mountainside, babbling brook to murmuring surf, ragged stands of casuarina pines casting dappled shadows on the golden sands of Phuket’s last large stretch of undeveloped beachfront to steep green slopes swaddled in almost impenetrable thickets of lush primary forest. MontAzure promises to be the crowning achievement in a career that includes collaborations with starchitect Kerry Hill on Amanresorts at Margaret River, WA and Curtis Island, Queensland, and landmarks in luxury like Phuket's renowned Twinpalms and Baan Yamu resorts, Chiang Mai's Chedi, a landscape refresh for Bangkok's legendary Sukothai Hotel, design and landscape for Bangkok's trend-setting boutique hotel Ad Lib, a flagship Andaz Resort in Bali, and some of the most sumptuous private homes in Asia and Australia. With both a Bachelor of Architecture specialized in urban planning from the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires and a Master of Landscape Architecture honours degree from Florida International University, Palleros embraces a critical and reflective approach to design that references place and culture with modern sensibilities while providing a memorable experience and creating an environment that will endure.
90
O N E CO A S T
At MontAzure, that means wrapping three distinct environments, or zones, into a series of memorable experiences and epiphanies, all part of a cohesive and spectacular whole. The project has been divided into beachfront, the plains and the hills, each zone presenting its own challenges, with distinctive flora, fauna and topographical features requiring distinct architectural vocabularies. “Originally we were hired as landscape architects by MontAzure but the scope has grown to encompass overall master-planning, and also now the design of the condominiums in the beach zone,” Palleros said. “We realised there were a lot of problems with the first masterplan, which did not adequately protect or take into account the green stuff with watercourses, steep hills, beautiful features. The client realised the issues we pointed out were important, and so they appointed us to take over the master-planning and take a holistic approach to the whole site.” Palleros describes the ascent from the beach zone thus: “After leaving the beachfront we come to the plains zone, which is a 'linear park' concept. So there is a sense of arrival that flows along the main entry to the project and also a pedestrian and cycling track that meanders from stretches of boardwalk along the main watercourses that wind their way down from the mountains and out to sea. And as the name suggests, there are also stretches of grassland, with various reveals and vistas catching the eye as you progress along with path, which is about a kilometre and a half in total.” In the more rarified atmosphere of the hillside zone, exceptionally exclusive three to five bedroom villas await, with architecture by the doyen of Thai designers, Lek Bunnag, and interiors by the late Balinese interior design legend Jaya Ibrahim.
It is Palleros, however, who provides the glue that will hold this vast and diverse project together. “Clients are beginning to understand the importance of a holistic approach,” he said. “It's not just a matter of hiring an architect and then having someone put some trees in the leftover spaces" When you study architecture, you focus on the building, you are trained to look at it like a sculpture, whereas with landscape architecture, you look at every vista, every view plane, each wall and tree and every single bit of space as part of the whole. “So when it comes to positioning of the buildings, the context, choice of materials, we have a huge advantage over a traditional architect's approach. That is why we gravitate to resort projects, where the relationship between landscape and architecture is so important “The MontAzure site is a challenge and a joy to work on, as the variety of topography is so unique. It goes from beautiful mature casuarina pines on the beachfront to real primary forest on the upper slopes of the hills, which is not something you expect to find in Phuket – trees growing in their original state, undisturbed and magnificent.” “In these high hills, above 80m, there is no construction. Just forest, a green reserve with hiking and mountain bike trails, perhaps a treetop walk. It's going to be very special.” Palleros takes special delight in revealing the specs and materials of his condominium design for The Residences at MontAzure, which will later be complemented by beach clubs, a retirement community, food and beverage outlets and other retail space. “We have really put a lot into getting the use of materials perfect for the environment,” he said.“For example, the treated pine we will use on the wooden trim and decking turns a beautiful silver colour as it ages, which will complement the colour of the pine needles in the casuarinas." “The slabs of raw concrete which make up the main structural walls will be softened by the shadow play of the shade trees and also by creepers that will spread across the concrete over time, softening the appearance and making it feel more organic. It's a very natural colour palette that complements the environment. We are determined to create something that is quite unique and different for Phuket.”

ne individual who pioneered the phenomenon of celebrities and royalties going nuts over his stunning shoe designs is none other than the invincible shoe couturier Jimmy Choo. Let’s say there is hardly any famous personality on the planet not having an incredible collection of Jimmy Choo shoes in their wardrobes. It’s the footwear guru that understands the feelings of women when it comes to shoe taste. Based on this philosophy, it’s no surprise that its popularity has never ever waned since its launch in 1996 and continues to create timeless pieces in varying shapes which are hard to resist. Likewise, it's other accessories like bags are no less tantalizing. For example: It's AW15 collection is inspired by the ballet, an art of theatrical excellence. And it really is as Sandra Choi, creative director of Jimmy Choo puts it this way, "There is a perception that ballet
is delicate and light - it is true there is beauty in the performance, but there is also an enormous sense of discipline involved. This led me to draw parallels with the theme of bondage. The dancers use delicate satin ribbons tied at the ankle like a harness, drawing the core in, focusing the mind, restraining the body. A knot gives the dancer strength to perform, but it’s also an art form. I was fascinated by how perfectly the two concepts of ballet and bondage intertwined.” www.jimmychoo.com

Futuristic shoes
by Peter Popps…
C
reativity is an intuitive calling that one cannot forcibly cling to at his or her own pace. It needs to be improvised time after time to stay on top. Otherwise, it gets maligned by rust if it’s not made the most of. The same philosophy applies to the art of shoemaking. At the end of the day, it’s all about creating shoes that draw people’s attention at once. And the type of shoes designed by the Dutch hero Peter Popps, one of the world’s most innovative designers alive today is proof that he knows what certain women pine for when it comes to shoes. So he makes it easy for them by offering a mindboggling collection of shoe shockers to choose from. In an exclusive interview with One Coast magazine, we caught up with him to explore more of his extraordinary world. Making shoes has been his passion from the start and because of it he has been successful in giving a whole new spin to how shoes might look like in the near future which is a commendable feat. “I’ve been in the shoe business all my life but it has always been a challenge to develop something new from the moment I started designing,” he says. Nothing could ever be more satisfying than someone being fully capable to work his or her way in life. This has been Popps strategy when he admits, “Despite attending two different academies, I feel proud when I rather see myself as a self-made designer who learned a lot while practicing.”
More so, we fashionistas are lucky to be treated to his absolutely awe-inspiring vision in the world of shoe design. Before he went ahead with the idea of launching his own footwear brand in 2003, he worked for several top brands like Bronx, Dr. Martens designing the so-called commercial shoes which had an edgy feel to some degree but not as much as he liked. Nonetheless, it’s been long time coming because he wanted to do something of his own bound by no limitations. As he explains, “The designs I developed lately such as Cube, Swing, Cone, Ring, Sphere, etc. are all based on the idea of what could we possibly perceive ourselves to be wearing in the future.”
It’s no surprise that looking at his designs, people will think of them as something which isn’t commercial based on what they know or what’s easily accessible in shops. Asked what his brand stands for, he replied, “I very much believe in this quote by Diana Vreeland in which she said: Give ‘em what they never knew they wanted’. That’s something different where innovation actually lies.” Brushing aside that his shoes are comfortable which they surely aren’t, he thinks artworks aren’t designed to be comfortable, but as they are all made on the principle of an Italian shoe, he can assure you they fit perfect! “My designs can’t be worn on a day-to-day basis. I don’t want them to be. It’s never my intention,” he argues. “I think of my work more as an art in its purest form with a wink to what should be available in the future.” Without doubt, no ordinary woman would dare fantasize about walking in his gothic shoes. They are simply for the woman who understands and knows when, where and how to wear them, delving into their inner desires. The technique he uses to create his futuristic footwear stems from nowhere but his imagination first and foremost which involves working with pencil and paper, computer programs, 3D and the old fashioned handmade way. “The shoes are totally made of leather to keep them comfortable. The sole-construction material isn’t interesting though...that I use out of pure love,” he says. Working on curves which are explicitly patterned isn’t easy. It’s quite an intricate process. According to him, the biggest difficulty that he comes across is when he has to build the overall structure itself which takes months. Alongside the nitty-gritty of design, it’s also important to keep the color combination jazzy. “It does express the feeling that goes with the design,” he says.
Inspirations from the days gone by Popps idiosyncratic ideas are influenced by avant garde, 60s Space-Age Chic, comics and Sci-Fi movies. The current inspirations find their origin in his fascination for creative freedom and architectural sensibility combined with novelties, innovations and revolutions in many ways, especially the developments that come out of rebellion and liberty. Inspired by the same, celebs like Lady Gaga and Janet Jackson both have enjoyed wearing his shoes. While Gaga wore the Cube shoes (one of his astonishing designs) in the official Artpop Film, Janet Jackson highly recommended them as a powerful style statement. “I adore the feminine power that comes from any woman who is in charge of her vulnerability in a different way as most people commonly believe and someone who's confident in beautiful heels when she uses the street as her daily catwalk,” he says. Great discoveries are often possible to pull off by overcoming the conventional mindset. To a question as to where he sees his vision fit in the mainstream fashion, he said, “Everything is always possible to transform, but all designs are opposed to mainstream cultural values as they are forced on us today. I just loathe the notion of mainstream.”

To mark its climb to the foot of the Matterhorn, Hublot has created two numbered Big Bang Zermatt models. In a tungsten or satin finished red gold case, with a ceramic bezel, a grey satin finished sun dial displays a counter at 9 o'clock engraved with the emblematic silhouette of the Matterhorn. Held on a brown calfskin strap with beige stitching, the Big Bang Zermatt is available in a limited edition of 150. The base opens to reveal a mechanical chronograph automatic winding HUB4100 movement. A piece of 3 cm rope takes pride of place above the movement between two sapphire panes, as if sealed for eternity. The Zermatt region is home to many tales and legends. One legend says that the original rope was found at an altitude of 4,320 metres on the North-East crest of the Matterhorn. It is said that ropes have a soul—due to the inside of the rope that is made up of many nylon threads meshed together—and there is no doubt that the soul of the Matterhorn shines at the heart of the Big Bang.

From Changing Lives to
Inspiring Others Inspirasia Foundation One 12th October 2002, Mark Weingard’s life was greatly affected and changed when his fiancé, Annika Linden, died in the Bali Bombings that killed 202 people. It would have been easy for him to turn around and hate the people who did this and keep the tragedy inside. Instead of allowing the terrorists to triumph Mark gave back to help the children affected by the attack. It was the day after the attacks that he decided to take the darkness and transform it into a positive bright light bringing good to a negative situation. From that day onwards a journey of giving and supporting vulnerable people started through the Annika Linden Foundation. Initially created to help those immediately affected by the bombings, today the foundation is known as the Inspirasia Foundation which aims to change more lives and inspire others to do so too. Since that tragic day, the Inspirasia Foundation has developed and grown into a leading foundation working with a number of different organizations in 4 different countries; Thailand, Indonesia, India and Malta working with womens health issues, alleviating poverty, educational scholarships and physical rehabilitation services. It has since expanded to inspire others, creating change and introducing new possibilities by supporting local organisations both financially and non-financially to help them change lives and build capacity to be able to have more impact and long-term sustainable growth. By working hand in hand with local organisations, monitoring and evaluating projects the Foundation is able to make sure that the money spent goes further and there is more impact with every dollar invested. The philosophy of the Foundation is to have a “more than money approach” which is done by working hand in hand with the organisations for the greatest impact and social change. This approach to strategic philanthropy led to the building and creation of the Annika Linden Centre. A decade after supporting the first organisations and people in Bali, the Annika Linden Centre was opened on the 13th October 2012 as a centre for excellence for non-profit organisations and to keep the legacy of honouring Annika’s life. Located in Bali, the centre is an incubator for impact and aims to connect and support non-profit organisations and philanthropists in Bali in being better at doing their social work through providing facilities for training, meetings and financial management support, as well as an integrated therapy centre and a prosthetic workshop. Since 2003, Inspirasia has directed more than US$12 million to outstanding local nonprofit organisations focused on core health, disability, education, and disaster relief. Inspirasia grants have reached thousands of individuals among some of Indonesia's poorest families, and tens of thousands more in India and Thailand. This money has been mainly generated from Mark Weingard’s businesses including Iniala Beach House,Thailand which is a strong supporter of Inspirasia Foundation, giving 10% of room revenues and 5% of other revenues to the Foundation. Philanthropy is the pulse of Iniala and has been 108builtOinto N E COtheir AST business model.
Ecohelping hands
From making and providing prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs in the Annika Linden Centre, to providing free health care for reproductive and sexual health in a local traditional Balinese market for the low-income women working there, to helping drug users get off the streets of Mumbai and get rehabilitated, to educating children who would not have had the means or funds to attend school for a better future, to supporting Burmese migrants and educating their children, Inspirasia Foundation is involved in a number of projects and the amount of lives that have been changed over the years has been incredible. As has been done in the past 12 years, Inspirasia Foundation plans to continue doing all this and reach out to more people and organisations to have effective social impact that will also inspire others to give well creating a ripple effect throughout. Inspirasia Foundation wishes to inspire business owners and executives globally to give to charity, to give more, and to give smart. By creating awareness and inspiration others can take it into their hands to be the change they want to see. Find out more at www.inspirasia.org and www.annikalindencentre.org or email: info@inspirasia.org In Thailand Inspirasia Foundation supports three organisations. Home & Life Foundation in Khok Kloi is a self-reliant home for the children of some of the survivor families and those who lost their families in the 2004 Tsunami. The orphanage houses 25 children providing them with a home, meals and teaches them entrepreneurial skills, life lessons and allows them to participate in normal family activities to help build a solid and stable foundation. Today the home also has a cafÊ and bakery which the older children run as an entrepreneurial project. Since being funded in 2000, The Foundation for Education and Development (FED), has been addressing the long term needs of marginalized Burmese migrant workers and their families in Thailand. The organisation helps Burmese migrant workers in Southern Thailand by providing education to their children, promoting job opportunities and fostering a safe and lawful environment, building bridges between Thai and Burmese communities, bringing justice and social security, educating on Human Rights, Economic, Social and Culture Rights and empowering the women to improve their situation. Goodwill Foundation in Bangkok works with improving the quality of life of young Thai women via skills training and career services.
Inspirasia Foundation is a non-political and non-religious foundation which is supported by different businesses around the world.

Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand
The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) was founded in 2001 and since then we have built up an organization, which provides fulltime care for almost 1200 wild animals, and has rescued over 5,000 wild animals since its inception over 14 years ago. We manage two wildlife rescue centres, one in Thailand and one in Laos with 115 staff members and 60 volunteers. Along with the direct care of wildlife we also run various other projects and wildlife protection campaigns.
WFFT Mission/ Vision of WFFT To rescue, rehabilitate and release wild animals that are victims of humanwildlife conflict, the illegal pet trade, the illegal wildlife trade, and the tourist industry. Wild animals that are unable to return back to the wild will be provided with permanent refuge at WFFT. We will continue to inform and educate the public.
WFFT Objectives Rescue wild animals from places where they are maltreated and/or neglected, and help them to spend the rest of their lives in a sanctuary as close to the natural environment as possible with the best possible care. In particular, provide a sanctuary for those animals that no one else is prepared to care for e.g. the sick and disabled. We aim to rescue those animals that have suffered at the hands of humans, rehabilitating and releasing those where possible, and caring for those who are unable to be returned to the wild.We aim to provide the best standard of living and a life as close to wild as possible for these animals. Educate people, particularly children, to stop cruelty to animals. In particular campaign against the illegal trade in wild animals for the pet industry and discourage the use of animals for entertainment, for example in performing animal shows. Prevent hunting and promote conservation of all natural resources, fauna and flora alike. Educate local people, tourists and the international community to appreciate, understand and protect wild animals and 110

their rainforest habitat. Cooperate with and assist the Royal Forestry Department and other organizations concerned with the rescue and conservation of wild animals. Gather knowledge to start up a release program for those animals that qualify for re-introduction into the wild. Set up and join activities with other charitable organizations and authorities for the public benefit.
Elephant Refuge The WFFT Elephant Refuge currently houses 16 elephants ranging in age from 1 year old to 65 years old. All the elephants in our care have come from abusive pasts. Thailand is home to both populations of wild and domesticated populations of the Asian elephant. The domestic population is sadly made up of animals that have been caught from the wild or bred in captivity. These animals have been trained/broken to live and work in the tourist or logging industry. Today, Thailand’s wild population elephant population is struggling for survival. The wild elephant population of Thailand is estimated at 2000 individuals that live in open grasslands and dense rainforests spread over the country. Historically, domestic elephants have been used predominantly in the logging industry, ironically and unwillingly helping to destroy the very habitat they rely on to survive. After the ban on logging in 1989, most of the logging elephants ended up being used within the tourist industry or have been used to make a living by begging on the streets of big cities. Walking day and night on these dirty and traffic-congested streets is detrimental to the elephant’s health, and unnatural. Street begging elephants often end up being involved in road traffic accidents, with fatalities commonly occurring for both the elephant and the mahout. Unfortunately, in Thailand, there are currently no laws to prevent this abuse and mistreatment. Therefore there is an urgent need to help these animals.
Ecohabitat Domesticated Elephants in Thailand Asian elephants have a long history of domestication. They were probably used as work animals as long ago as 2000 BC. They were used in war against Alexander the Great in 326 BC and they accompanied Hannibal and his army across the Alps in 218 BC. Even during World War Two and the Vietnam War they were used to transport supplies. In Thailand, as in many countries in Asia, the Asian elephant has been domesticated and used by humans for many years to work in the logging industry. Following the ban on commercial logging in Thailand in 1989 these working elephants were no longer needed. Suddenly hundreds of elephants and their owners were left with a very uncertain future, their owners were forced to seek alternative methods to use their elephants to make a living, and this has led to the problem of ‘begging’ elephants on city streets.
During the day the elephants are tied up out of sight, frequently on rubbish dumps and in disused car parks, often with inadequate shade, water or food. City elephants are frequently malnourished and do not consume anywhere near the amount of food that they should eat every day. The elephants are not bathed regularly, as elephants should be, and this often leads to skin diseases.
Elephant camps Other unfortunate elephants have ended up working at elephant camps, some with no cover against the burning sun. At some places they are cruelly exploited in the name of ‘entertainment’, forced to perform degrading and unnatural tricks purely to entertain tourists. Kept on chains 24 hours a day, these animals lose their dignity and freedom and merely exist as moneymaking commodities.
Begging elephants Begging elephants are a common sight in some of the major towns and cities in Thailand such as Bangkok, although this practice is illegal. These elephants are paraded around and used as begging tools: their owners will ask for money to help buy food for the elephants. Simply walking an elephant through the streets, and selling fruit and vegetables for people to feed it can make money. Elephants are made to roam the streets at night for many hours, often being deprived of food and water to prevent excretion. They are often drugged to make them easier to handle, and beaten with spike hammers to make them perform tricks. The dirt and hectic city environment is far from ideal for these elephants, which are by nature forest dwellers. The noise and traffic causes them considerable stress, not to mention the dangers posed by the traffic. Every year many elephants are killed or injured in traffic accidents. The polluted air is extremely damaging to the elephants’ health and they frequently sustain injuries by stepping on broken glass and other debris.
City Elephants Domesticated elephants are still seen on the streets of Bangkok and other large cities in Thailand. The city is a harsh environment for such a large forest animal. They are under constant threat of road accidents, pollution and a scorching heat that can be fatal to a large mammal such as the elephant. The city dwelling is however a financially lucrative practice, bringing in more money than work at a tourist camp or elephants conservation facility. Instead of pounding up and down busy city streets, the elephants at WFFT now spend their days standing on the natural ground of earth and grass instead of concrete or tarmac, breathing good fresh air instead of traffic fumes, eating as much as they like with the company of other elephants and having the care of our experienced mahouts and veterinary staff. In the late afternoons, all the elephants are walked out into the beautiful forest surrounding the centre where they spend the night foraging and eating natural foods as they would in the wild.
Mahouts in Thailand Elephant training is among the oldest jobs in the world. In the past and still today, a single mahout is assigned to each animal, forging a close bond that often lasts for life. In the past the job of a mahout was a hereditary profession often extending over several generations and bringing a certain social status with it. At present however, this is not common. The job of mahout is to earn a living from the elephants, which results in its exploitation. The real value
of a mahout lies in the understanding and knowing of the animal. A good mahout is often a man who has been close to elephants since his childhood and who is able to see when an elephant is in a good or bad mood. He must be able to communicate with his elephant e.g. by nudging its ears. Observing a mahout directing his elephant may sometimes look like maltreatment as the mahout uses a tool to pick on the elephant’s head, neck and ears. This stems from when an elephant is originally domesticated, whereby it undergoes a week long of torture to break its spirit. This involves chaining the elephant up so that it cannot move, and subjecting it to continuous physical and mental discomfort. In sight of, but out of reach of food and water, the elephant is starved and beaten day and night from mahouts on shift so that it cannot sleep. You may notice various scars on the elephants and holes in the ears from aggressive use of the bull hook during the domestication process. Mahouts carry the hook as a reminder to the elephant who is boss. Although no damage is usually done during day-to-day use of the hook, it causes enough discomfort to the elephant to remind them of their domestication, enabling the mahout to reinforce his control. Young elephants are torn away from their mothers at an age much earlier than they would normally become independent, thus adding another dimension to the psychological cruelty involved. Rescuing the elephants from the harsh city environment is already a big step to improving their welfare and general well-being, and demonstrates that the mahouts do care about their animals. Changing Thai culture and mentality towards animal welfare is a much longer process. If mahouts think that westerners come to Thailand to ride elephants for their own enjoyment and “experience”, then this will support the motivation to domesticate elephants for the tourist industry. If mahouts come to learn that westerners visit Thailand to help prevent wildlife from suffering and do not support the exploitation of animals for amusement, then gradually a change in mentality could possibly be achieved.
Mortality during capture of wild elephants Capture of wild elephants for domestic use has become a threat to wild populations where numbers have been seriously reduced. Because of the long years of infancy, when an elephant is not capable of work, it has been the custom to take wild elephants and train them rather than breed from domesticated animals. India has banned capture in order to converse its wild herds, but in Myanmar hundreds are caught each year for the timber industry. Unfortunately, crude capture methods have led to a high level of deaths and efforts are being made, not only to improve safety, but also captive breeding rather than taking from the wild. www.wfft.org O N E CO A S T

How to make gravy from red meat
P
lanning an exciting holiday meal, maybe an English style Roast Lamb or a Christmas Turkey? There’s a famous saying “ It’s all in the Gravy’ and this couldn’t be more true as a good gravy or sauce can not only be the perfect complement to your meal but just as easily ruin your hours of work in the kitchen. One Coast Magazine takes a close look at the simplicity but importance of getting the gravy right.
The easiest method is to make the gravy in the roasting tin. To do this, remove the nearly finished roast (beef or lamb) and set it aside to rest. With more fatty meats, it is often advisable to skim off some of the fat before beginning. Add a couple of tablespoons of flour to a small glass of water and mix thoroughly so there are no lumps and then blend into the pan stirring vigorously with high heat. Remove from the stove and pour the stock in – little by little, stirring all the time, making sure that all the tasty meat residue is scraped off the bottom of the pan into the sauce. Once it has thickened, then pour into a pre-heated gravy boat.
The Great British Gravy One thing is certainly true – gravy has been a main part to the Great British cuisine for centuries. What else would you pour over your Roast Lamb on a Sunday? What else would bangers and mash swim in? What else could go with the Yorkshire pudding? A Real British gravy is the combination of meat juices left in the pan thickened with a roux (flour and a fat, usually butter) and lengthened with stock. Every home would have their own interpretation, from clear light gravies to the more old-school thick dark gravy.

The stock It would be unusual to use beef or lamb stock in chicken gravy. But it's not unusual to add chicken stock to a beef or lamb gravy. Veal is another popular option, famed for its richness. As with any gravy, the quality of the stock accounts for much of the flavor, so try to use a good homemade stock. Variations It's common to add red wine to the gravy along with the stock, and a dash of port wine adds a wonderful richness. Redcurrant jelly is a traditional sweetener and flavor enhancer add one or two teaspoons to lamb gravy. Other popular additions are tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce and of course some fresh herbs.
LifestyleTable Tales
The Stock The stock that you pour in the pan accounts for a lot of the flavor, so the quality of the stock will have a big impact on the quality and flavor of the gravy. If the bird has any extras – giblets, hearts, neck and gizzards (but not the liver as it can be bitter) – then brown in some butter, add diced onion, celery and carrot. Pour water over the meat and vegetables, simmer and strain. Of course, fresh or frozen homemade stock made from leftover carcasses is a fine addition to any gravy.
How to make gravy from poultry The easiest, and simplest way to make gravy is to do it in the same pan as the bird has just been roasted in. Whether chicken or turkey, simply thicken the meat juices with a bit of flour, mix the flour first in a touch of water to avoid lumps, and then lengthen with the stock. Taste can be improved adding a touch of wine. Once the gravy has thickened, then pour into a pre-heated gravy boat, straining if required.
Variations It's common to flavor poultry stock with a squeeze of lemon. But a touch of mustard or flavored vinegar, or even a spoonful of crème fraîche to lighten the gravy are all fantastic options. A popular way to enhance gravy is to harness the vegetable base trick, where the roast is cooked on a bed of carrots, onion and celery to add extra flavor to the juices in the pan. Most people automatically reach for a bottle of white wine when making poultry gravy. But red wine might be used for darker game birds such as grouse or goose, along with a little redcurrant jelly, perhaps.
TIPS : Lumpy gravy can be a seriously embarrassing mistake on the table so make your life easy, while adding the flour to thicken the sauce put the flour in a small cup with a little bit of warm water and mix well getting all the lumps out before you add it to your sauce. Second the main ingredient that will make or break your gravy is the stock that you add, if your adding something with no flavor then you can’t expect the gravy to magically be delicious. Use a pre made or home made stock that’s oozing with taste to give your gravy some real smack.

star films Recommended Old and New Movies
words by Brett Turner
just out Amy UK / Film 4, 2015 Most people’s knowledge and opinions of Amy Winehouse will be based on the media circus that hounded her to an early grave. This film does a great job of rectifying that, dispelling the myth of the waster junkie always in and out of trouble, and instead giving us a riveting portrait of a vulnerable, media-shy, fragile genius that died far too soon. Luckily for us, Amy’s friends often videoed her early years on the road with camera phones and camcorders and we are immediately part of a very close-knit circle. Showing her amazing, effortless talent at an early age, she is a spotty and often painfully shy girl but the genius inside is obvious to see breaking through. Indeed, her rise is incredibly quick, and record executives are happy to explain why. Her lyrics, all written by herself and based on personal experience, drip with authenticity and heartbreak from the start, combined with a stellar voice that seems to come from nowhere. Paradoxically, from
the start she openly speaks of her fear of fame and when it comes, a torrent of flashing cameras thrust at her by a pack of utterly uncaring paparazzi, she is bewildered and left questioning her own existence. The film is pitched as ‘Amy in her own words’ and the makers (previously behind the equally transfixing and masterfully made Senna) put her lyrics up on the screen for us all the follow. They are a direct insight to the mind of a girl that desperately wants to be loved. Tragically, those that do seem either frustratingly unable to save her from herself, or display stunning self-regard and self-interest. We hear voice messages where she offers unconditional love to people who clearly don’t deserve it, particularly her resentful and deeply unappealing husband Blake Fielder-Civil who apparently introduces her to hard drugs and keeps her on them to supply his own addiction. Her father is not portrayed in a great light either, putting work and his own advancement in front of her own best interests, no matter how well meaning he may be. Indeed she is openly in need of a
the Duke Brothers, brilliantly performed by Ralph Bellamy & Don Ameche, and it’s fair to say they are two utter gits and misers to boot (a drinks waiter is tipped $5 as a Christmas Bonus – “Maybe I’ll go to the movies… by myself.”).
Video Vault Trading Places USA / Paramount 1983 Where to begin with the utterly foul-mouthed, completely un-PC Trading Places? Well, it’s one of the funniest films of all time for starters, full of zingers and one-liners and with a cast that clearly loved every minute of filming. Dan Aykroyd plays Winthorpe, a privileged young snob with his own Stepford Wife-To-Be and butler. He’s driven to his fancy office every day to work for super-rich bosses 116
O N E CO A S T
Winthorpe’s cosy existence is brought crashing down around him when he accidentally crosses paths with Billy Ray Valentine, played by Eddie Murphy in possibly his best ever performance. Billy Ray is a homeless street hustler, shuffling around the streets of Philadelphia on a board with wheels pretending to be a Vietnam War veteran with no legs. Apprehended by the police who happen to be real Vietnam vets and aren’t impressed by his ruse, he is taken in by the hideously racist Duke’s in order to perform an experiment to see if they can make a success of him while forcing Winthorpe in to a life of crime. The supporting cast and brilliant writing are what turn a pretty standard fish out of water morality tale in to a cracking comedy. Denholm Elliot is perfectly cast as the butler in the middle of it all, getting sozzled as Billy Ray invites just about everyone he knows round to his new mansion for a party and explaining to him what a Jacuzzi is (“you ain’t Jacuzzi-ing nobody!”). Jamie Lee Curtis is a prostitute with street smarts that knows a good potential deal when she sees one and helps Winthorpe get back
strong male figure in her life and those two in particular fail time after time. It is telling that by the end of her story it is her bodyguard that seems to have the genuine concern for her combined with the strength of character that Amy respects. Juxtaposed with all this is her music, which is world class. Her emotions are there on the screen as she has her heart broken (and on one occasion exacts brutal revenge, sleeping with an ex’s friend) yet channels all of it through spellbinding performances. Her recording of ‘Back to Black’ as we are taken in and out of the sound booth with her as she does the whole song in one take, is one of many great high points. Obviously the most pertinent song, Rehab, which became her signature tune for all the wrong reasons, resonates throughout. Dead from alcohol poisoning at 27, her idol the legendary jazz singer Tony Bennett , who performs her last recording with her, speaks sadly of a huge loss of someone he regards as a woman that should have been one of the all-time greats. “Life teaches you how to live it – if you live long enough.”
on his feet. My personal favorite is the no-nonsense Clarence Beeks (Paul Gleason), who is so nasty and calculating that like Darth Vader he even has his own theme tune, throwing hapless commuters to the floor that get is his way (“excuse me!”, he growls, and in another hilarious off-the-cuff incident a woman listening over his shoulder to his conversation on a public phone is told in no uncertain terms to get lost). Director John Landis was in the golden era of his career at the time, churning out classics like The Blues Brothers and An American Werewolf in London, and this is possibly his best film. The down to earth adult humour in Trading Places is spot on, even now over 30 years later. Unlike most modern comedies which seem to throw in as many gags as possible regardless of how funny they are and the main characters are two dimensional caricatures to deliver them, there isn’t a single dud note in Trading Places, each scene another foul mouthed joke fest (you have been warned) and the actors deliver their lines with glee. It’s aged extremely well which is rare as a lot of comedies become trapped in their era. Indeed Trading Places is to be treasured - in these safe times when people seem to be so easily offended it certainly would not have been made anything like as well today. An all time classic and highly recommended.

BOXSETHEAVEN Never be clueless again about the shows everyone's talking about. Resident TV show addict Brett Turner weeds out the best from the rest of the box sets out there available to watch and download, mixing bang up to date stuff with old ones you may have missed.
out now The Man In The High Castle USA / Amazon Studios 2015 Military historians call ‘What If’s’ counterfactuals. Before you dig deeper, I warn you now - it is truly chilling, especially in the turbulent world we live in, to reflect on just how much of what we take for granted is not because of our heroes but by complete fluke. You can go back as far as you like – the Mongols turning around and heading home with Western Europe at their mercy, the Union winning the American civil war (not to mention the amount of times American independence could have been stillborn), and then pick a war in between. There are countless examples where history has turned on a sixpence and the world could have been a much darker place than it is today. Authors of course know this, and particularly with World War 2 being such a close run thing (if you don’t believe me feel free to Google ‘D-Day weather’ and ‘Nazi Rocket Program’) it is easy fodder for great storytelling. The late, brilliant writer Philip K. Dick ‘s story is the basis for this TV
series and its first season is a quality piece of television. Set in an alternate reality where the Nazi’s and Imperial Japan have won the war and carved up America between them, the plot turns on scratchy films showing what we know as history where the Allies win and good triumphs over evil. Resistance fighters attempt to smuggle these films, Nazis and Japanese secret police try to stop them. Anything more would be to give away a plot that gets better and better with each episode – more on that in a moment. To reiterate though, it is excellent. Like many great shows, it could easily have never been made. Ridley Scott, who cemented his reputation with another Philip K. Dick adaptation Blade Runner, had been trying to get the book adapted for years by the BBC. As it happened, X Spotznitz, a fan of the book, was asked by Amazon if there was anything great he wished he’d been able to make. The rest, pardon the pun, is history. What we end up with is a tale that is truly pertinent in a time when humans are, sadly, once again suspicious
But if you can get past any initial reservations about the premise sounding dry or boring, you will be allowing yourself the chance to watch an outstanding television series, with superb actors delivering Aaron Sorkin’s razorsharp lines with glee.
Classic Box Set The West Wing USA / Warner Bros. 1999 – 2006 If I described the basic premise of The West Wing to most people, their eyes would glaze over and they’d probably start talking over me about something else. “It’s a political drama set mostly in the West Wing of the White House –“ “That’s nice so what did you do at the weekend?” would probably be how the conversation would go.
It all revolves around the imaginary presidency of Josiah ‘Jed’ Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen who from the off seems born to perform the role. His staff juggle endless issues and crisis around him, from the mundane such as official visits from presidents of far flung countries that barely speak, to attempted assassination and terrorist attacks. Working 20 hour days they often drop the ball, much to Bartlet’s frustration, going ‘off-message’ and walking in to traps set for them or of their own making. All the while dealing with incredibly high stakes in demanding jobs, they must try to have some kind of personal life as well, again with the potential pitfalls of people in office expected to be whiter than white. It’s these people that are the show’s strength, an ensemble cast that are all extremely varied yet will have you struggling to find a favourite. Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff) is the Communications Director tasked with writing just about everything that the President says in public, ably assisted by Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe). They are suitably idealistic for speechwriters and they have to be, changing the ‘message’ often up to the moment it comes
and judgmental of one another for nationalistic or religious reasons. This is where the series really gets under the skin. We see the SS uniform, then we are sat around the dinner table and everything is normal. We accompany Japanese torturers pursuing what can, in a slightly obtuse way, be called justice. It is deeply unsettling to be reminded just how close we are to being turned in to monsters, as many of our ancestors once were and as, if just a casual perusal of social media or current American electioneering is to be believed, many of us wish to be again. But this is entertainment, and entertaining it certainly is. It is gorgeously shot, the producers no doubt aware of having none other than Scott watching the dailies. In terms of drama though, what I loved was how each episode ratcheted up from the last – Episode 1 is almost benign, luring you in to this world as if it is normal. Like a perfectly wound clock, the tension builds until the final two scenes of the seasons end, when you will be both shouting ‘of course!’ and looking forward to more. Original, thrilling and thought-provoking.
out of the President’s autocue while trying to make him sound inspiring to the people he needs precious votes from. Contrast them with Press Secretary C. J. Cregg (Allison Janney), who performs the unenviable task of facing the press pack daily and attempting to do so while firefighting the frequent cock-ups coming from the building behind her. The list of brilliant supporting actors goes on and on. Trying to keep everyone in some kind of order is Leo McGarry, brilliantly played by John Spencer. You’ll wish you’d had this wise owl as a real-life uncle – he could easily have played the lead role of Bartlet himself. As with almost all American TV series, the first one or two episodes (the dreaded ‘Pilot’ phase of programming when a series is either commissioned or not) are not the strongest as the actors find their feet. But the show is quickly in to it’s stride and never lets up, gaining confidence and swagger to the tune of seven series when everyone decided to call it a day in 2006. The legacy left behind is simply some of the best television ever made. Enjoy.
