Sophisticated, relaxed or casual. From Autumn/ Winter to Spring/Summer the grey palette has been touted as the new black. Being neutral in nature it pairs beautifully with almost every shade. From yellow to pink, marsala to black this colour is sure to become a true wardrobe staple. Unlike black, teaming a darker shade grey skirt or pant with a lighter shade top is incredibly striking. Worn with a fire red lip and red pumps (if you dare) transcends your look to yet another level of elegance.

Recently named the Middle East’s leading tourist attraction at the World Travel Awards Gala, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is the world’s largest indoor theme park and a must-visit for Ferrari aficionados and families from around the world. The park features more than 20 Ferrari inspired rides and attractions for visitors of all ages, in addition to a wide variety of Italian delicacies and unique shopping experiences. Located in the centre of Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island next to Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Waterworld and Yas Mall – its unique groundhugging form echoes that of a huge red sand dune emblazoned with the iconic “Prancing Horse” logo from Italian war hero Count Francesco Baracca, a famous Italian aviator of the 1900’s whose legendary emblem was inherited by Enzo Ferrari. From the moment you step through the gates into the thrilling adventure that is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, you’re totally immersed in a larger-than-life experience that brings together everything its namesake marque stands for – speed, passion, innovation, winning spirit and a chance to have the ride of your life!

That winning spirit is evident all around. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi’s spectacular giant red dome houses a swirling miasma of high-octane energy – one where you can ride the world’s fastest rollercoaster ‘Formula Rossa’ shooting off from 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 240km/h, and feel the thrill of sitting in an F1 driver’s seat as you race around the Yas Marina Circuit on one of the world’s most sophisticated racing simulators ‘Scuderia Challenge’. Other thrills include the exhilarating duelling coaster ‘Fiorano GT Challenge’ where two competing Ferrari F430 Spiders launch away from the starting line on the twisting parallel tracks, based on real GT racecourses from around the world, in a high octane race to the finish. The exclusive ‘Driving Experience’ gives you the chance to live your dreams and drive the exceptional Ferrari California around Yas Island. You can enjoy a one-on-one experience with an expert Ferrari co-pilot, or ride with a couple of friends or family.

Ferrari World’s 200,000m2 red roof is one of Yas Island’s most distinctive landmarks, emblazoning the Abu Dhabi landscape with the stamp of champions and signalling a taste of the unique adventures within. The Ferrari logo on the roof measures an incredible 65 meters in length and covers an area of 3,000m2; the biggest Ferrari logo ever created. The visually distinctive form and shape crowns the Yas Marina Circuit and due to its location, the sleek shape and beauty of the building can be experienced by anyone driving past or flying over the Island. The building is a true architectural expression of the values of the Ferrari brand itself.

“Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is one of the f irst eyecatching structures people see when they fly into Abu Dhabi – it grabs people’s imagination and creates an inspiring talking point amongst travellers even before t hey touch down in t he UAE ,” continues Varg as. To house this state of the art leisure attraction, world renowned architectural firm Benoy created a building to reflect the sinuous form of a Ferrari, directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT body.

F1 enthusiasts will also be able to live out their fantasies of a Ferrari thrilling drive with Fernando Alonso, as they skid through tight corners at the Fiorano track and spin through wet surfaces around the streets of Maranello on the multisensory adventure ‘Driving with Champions’. ‘Karting Academy’, offers the ultimate racing experience. Whether a beginner or a serious sprinter, visitors can test their racing skills aboard the region’s first electric powered go-karts and challenge family and friends around a track inspired by Yas Marina Circuit at speeds at up to 80km/h. For children dipping their toes in the fast-lane of thrills there’s a fantastical 4-D adventure through deep green jungles, icy caves and ravines, the bottom of the ocean and the mouth of a fiery volcano on ‘Speed of Magic’ – one of the Park’s most popular rides. And if that whets their appetite for racing then head on over to the ‘Junior GP’ where the younger members of the family can get their first taste behind the wheel of a race car just their size. At the ‘Junior Training Camp’, an interactive soft play area they can become a custom ‘constructor’, climb up the grandstand, pilot remote controlled cars, paddle their own miniature Ferrari and play with an F1™ car made entirely of soft, child-friendly foam. “There isn’t anywhere else where one can experience the world of Ferrari in the same way as you do at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi,” explains Jesse Vargas, General Manager of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. “The authenticity of the tales – from the materials used, to the historical references embedded in every ride and attraction – lets visitors really immerse themselves in the stories behind the legend and truly become a part of the captivating world of Ferrari. That’s what brings people from around the world to the Park, and keeps them coming back for more!”

Recently announced plans include seven new rides over three years. ‘Flying Aces’ is planned to become the world’s steepest steel roller coaster, with a starting hill inclined at 51 degrees, along with the world’s tallest loop stretching 52 metres. The ride is inspired by Italy’s “ace of aces” Count Francesco Baracca. “There are very few theme parks that have undertaken such a significant expansion as Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The Flying Aces design and storyline are deeply rooted in the rich history of Ferrari,” ~Jesse Vargas. Ferrari World’s fuel-injected future attractions will offer a multi-sensory adrenaline adventure of high-speed motoring to the vistas, sounds, aromas and tastes of Ferrari’s Italian homeland.

ALL ABOARD?

THAI GOVERNMENT SETS SAIL FOR SUPERYACHT CHARTER MARKET PHUKET, Thailand – With Thailand's marine industry on the up and up, a recent public hearing was held to discuss how to develop Phuket as the maritime hub in Asean. A huge turnout from the Island's marine industry and local bigwigs put their heads together and reached consensus on the need for a special charter license for superyachts. On the back of a meeting between Mr. Gulu Lalvani, Chairman of Royal Phuket Marina, and Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, in January earlier this year, the Royal Thai Government has put marine tourism on the national agenda and Phuket is set to become the testing ground. “I met with Khun Kobkarn in January after we had hosted the Phuket International Boat Show at Royal Phuket Marina and we discussed many ways in which to develop Thailand's marine industry. Among a series of ideas I proposed was to introduce a special charter licence for superyachts,” said Mr. Lalvani. “There are many owners who would bring their superyachts to Phuket if they could charter them while here, and I know many people who charter superyachts around the world for in excess of 100,000 USD per week. Introducing a license for those who wish to charter in Thailand will significantly increase revenue for Phuket and Thailand. In a few years it is likely to be in the hundreds of million US dollars,” added Mr. Lalvani.

With its stunning cruising grounds and the best marina facilities in the region, Thailand is the destination of choice for superyachts coming to the region. Often referred to as the Monaco of Asia, Royal Phuket Marina is a 5-Gold Anchor, 100-berth marina centrally located on Phuket's East Coast. A destination in its own right, the marina is complemented by a collection of award-winning luxurious waterfront villas and condominiums, and a plethora of dining and shopping options along the marina boardwalk. THE WEALTH OF HEALTH NUTRITION

FORMER BRITISH SPECIAL FORCES COMMANDO, HIGHPROFILE BODYGUARD AND SEASONED PERSONAL TRAINER CALLUM McGREGOR TAKES ON THE MISSION OF NUTRITION.

As a professional trainer for over twelve years, it has become ever more obvious that nutrition and diet is the biggest struggle for most people in achieving their physical goals.

Anyone can hit the gym and have hardcore sessions three or more times a week, but for many it is not so easy to be as strict with their diet. Unfortunately, diet and training are equally as important to achieving your goals. Finding the diet best suited to your body type, metabolism and health conditions can be difficult and at times feel virtually impossible when we are media-bombarded by so many different diet fads.

Fat Loss Diet Genetics, schmanetics! Yes, it may be true that your genes

contribute to your body’s performance, but you can boost your metabolism by simply eating the right foods. Here’s the scoop on which foods you should include in your daily diet to get your fat-burning gears in motion. Consuming 5 or 6 small meals spread out over the day will speed up your fat burning. By drip feeding the body constant food you can trick it into thinking you have plenty of food supply so you burn more and store less energy as fat. Eating larger, less frequent meals activates a survival mechanism that releases high levels of insulin which causes the storage of fat. Eating more frequent, smaller meals will keep your insulin levels more stable. Make sure these meals are low in simple carbs like sugary foods, white flour and white rice. These foods are high on the glycemic index and up your insulin levels the most. Foods to avoid are white bread, bagels, white pasta, pizza, doughnuts, biscuits, pastries and cakes.

Comprise your smaller meals of complex carbs like brown or wholegrain bread, brown pasta, brown rice, muesli and wholegrain cereals. These complex carbs are digested much slower and release energy gradually over a longer period, thus avoiding insulin spikes. Complex, high fibre foods give you that “full” feeling and also help flush your digestive system through. Try and replace carbs with higher amounts of quality protein such as eggs, fish, lean meats like chicken, whey, soy or casein protein. Other foods that contain fat metabolizing ingredients are coffee, green tea, grapefruit, hot peppers and oatmeal. 36

ONE COAST

The key is to break down the basic rules of these diets and cut away all the trendy labels, focussing on the core nutritional elements combined with activities to optimise your entire system and target your specific needs. As I tell many of my clients, if you are overweight and want to lose excess body fat through diet, it really is as simple as “doing more and eating less”. Most people tend to overlook this basic principle. If you consume too much energy through food that your body doesn’t use or need, then your body is forced to store that excess energy as fat. With most aspects of training and diet the one golden rule that many people fail fto ully grasp due to an overabundance of commercial trickery...is that there are no shortcuts. To get results you must put in the effort. This goes for eating too. If you are not willing to put in the effort, time, and energy and make those sacrifices then it’s very difficult for you to achieve the health and fitness goals you want. In this article I will break down the diet structures for four specific physical needs: Fat Loss, Lean Muscle Building, Lowering Cholesterol and lastly but by no means least, The Detox.

Lean Muscle Diet Building muscle is important in achieving any fitness goal because

muscle is metabolically active, as opposed to body fat which is used primarily for energy storage. The muscle mass you carry causes your body to burn extra calories throughout the day even while you’re at rest. Your body’s muscle mass is maintained by your diet. If you are looking to build muscle, there are a couple of things you need to keep in mind: you need to consume an excess of calories to maximise development. There is no single “best diet” for everyone and you need to work out your own calorific requirements regarding training and body type/size. Protein should not be the sole nutrient in your diet, it’s easy to get tied up with consuming huge amounts of protein to build muscle but the body must get all the nutrients from fat and carbohydrates, so don’t neglect your other food groups when wanting to build muscle. Fats are very important in any muscle building diet. Fats serve many metabolic functions, including the formation of some hormones. Good Sources of Carbohydrate to Include in Muscle Building Diets are Oats, Sweet Potatoes, Squash, Yams, Beans & Legumes, Whole Grain Rice, Whole Grain Bread and Whole Grain Pasta.

Good Sources of Protein to Include in Your Muscle Building Diet are Lean Red Meat, Egg Whites, Whey Protein, Cottage Cheese, Fish, Chicken, Turkey, Lean Pork, Nuts and Seeds. The Best Dietary Sources of Fats for Muscle Building Diets are Walnuts, Almonds, Salmon, Flax Seeds and Medium Chain Triglycerides, such as Coconut Products.

HealthWELLNESS

The Detox Diet Detox is a trendy term that gets thrown around a lot. While a

seven day juice cleanse can be safe and enjoyable for some, it’s not always a realistic option. But there are many practical ways to support your body’s natural detoxification processes. The reason we should even pay detox any mind is simple: our lifestyles can put our highly evolved systems to the test. The body is normally quite capable of detoxing on its own but rising stress levels, lack of exercise, poor diet and lifestyle choices - not to mention the ever-increasing levels of toxins in our environment - can push it to capacity. While it’s impossible to avoid toxins completely, it’s important to support your body in getting rid of them. Detoxing can be something you do a little of every day. To that end, here are four simple detox solutions that even the busiest person can manage. CUT THE SUGAR! You don’t need me to tell you that sugar is not the best thing to put in your mouth. Not only is sugar linked with a range of health problems, including obesity and diabetes, but the inflammation it causes can damage cell membranes, allowing toxins to sneak in and interfere with normal cell functioning. The more stressed you are, the more likely you are to rely on sugary foods, snacks, and drinks to give you the boost you need. That’s a short-term fix with long-term negative effects. Cutting out as much sugar as you can will prevent weight gain, inflammation, premature aging, and even balance your energy. EAT MORE BITTER FOODS! Eating your greens is always detox-friendly. But even better are bitter greens, which must taste bitter in order to get the benefits. That’s because when you taste bitter foods, like arugula, watercress and dandelion greens, they stimulate the liver to more effectively cleanse the body. This is because your taste buds signal the green goodies and your gastrointestinal system gets the message to release hormones and digestive enzymes that increase bile flow, metabolize fats, and keep elimination moving smoothly. This helps your body carry the toxins out faster. DRY BRUSH YOUR SKIN! Even the busiest person takes showers, right? One of the simplest and most enjoyable detox solutions is dry-skin brushing, which is exactly what it sounds like. It takes all of a few seconds in the morning and supports your largest organ, your skin. This works because Brushing removes dead cells that collect environmental toxins, while also keeping pores unclogged, so that the body can eliminate toxins through the skin. It also renews your skin cells and improves the way your skin looks and feels. You can find these dry body brushes in health stores and online and plus this invigorating ritual stimulates the nervous system, too, making it a great way to wake up! CLEAN THE LIVER! Think of your liver as your own personal filtering system. The liver has many important functions that keeps a person healthy. It removes harmful material from the bloodstream and helps digest food. The liver works as our bodies’ fat-burning organ, converting nutrients from our food into essential blood components, storing vitamins and minerals and producing proteins and enzymes to balance hormones. Our livers also help the immune system fight infections, remove bacteria from the blood and make bile, which is essential for digestion. Although the immune system protects our body from many dangers, it is the liver that protects the immune system from overload. These are the main reasons for keeping your liver clean and a few of the most effective foods are garlic, grapefruit, beetroot, leafy greens, green tea, avocados, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, lemons, turmeric and walnuts.

Lower Cholesterol Diet. Want to give your cholesterol an extra nudge in the right direction? While your genes determine how much cholesterol your body produces naturally, diet also plays a role. These easy diet tips will help lower your cholesterol for better heart health.

Foods that claim to be “low-fat” may contribute significantly to fat intake if you eat more than one serving. The label phrase “low-fat” means the product contains 3 grams or less per serving. Be sure to check the serving size on the nutrition facts label and account for the extra fat (and calories) consumed if you eat more than one serving. Increasing soluble fibre intake by 5 to 10 grams each day may result in a 5% drop in LDL cholesterol. Start the day with a cup of oatmeal, put a ½ cup of beans on your salad at lunch, eat broccoli with dinner and snack on an orange or a pear and you’ll easily meet the target range. Eggs are no longer on the cholesterol blacklist. The daily recommended limit is 300 milligrams of cholesterol and one egg contains about 213. So if you’re going to eat an egg in the morning, simply limit how much cholesterol you get that day from other sources. Substitute some veggies for meat at dinner, or skip the half-and-half in your coffee. Choose hot or cold breakfast cereals, such as oatmeal and oat bran containing about 2 grams of soluble fibre and 4 to 6 grams of total fibre per 1-cup serving. Add a banana or other fruit for a further boost. This will help keep LDL cholesterol low. Dietary cholesterol can elevate your blood cholesterol levels, but saturated fat has an even worse effect. However, the two are often found in the same foods, including meat, butter and full-fat dairy. So by limiting your intake of foods rich in saturated fat, you’ll also help reduce your intake of cholesterol.

This issue, One Coast is honoured to share the story of a much loved and respected Thai singer. A Christian faith, calming aura and ever youthful beauty, Saranya Songsermsawad has wowed fans to become one of Thailand’s most successful Thai female ballad artists. When and why did you start singing? I have liked singing since I was a little girl. I can still remember how wonderful it was when my mom sang for me, so I tried to sing along with her, and every time I sang, someone who heard my voice told me I was good. After a while, I wondered what being “good” at singing really meant. I just know that I like to sing to make others happy. I officially became a singer when I met Khun Rewat Buddhinan (Exexecutive producer of GMM Grammy) and signed a contract with GMM after that. As a seasoned performer, what’s your motivation? This is the 26th year of my career since I became a singer. I feel like I can express all of my feelings and show people who I am through songs I sing, albums I make, music videos I film or concerts I perform. I also want to show my fans how much I love them through everything I do. What’s been your most memorable performance? My most memorable concert was not my biggest concert but rather a small one – “Saranya Songs – Yak Yud Ve La” concert. That year was my 20th year celebration, so I launched a new album that remixed my greatest hits. Another memorable concert was a donation concert for Kritt Panana, a guitarist suffering terminal cancer. My fans and I had a memorable time together as it was a warm concert filled with love. Is your family musical? I did not grow up in a family of professional musicians, but we shared a love for music. My brother is very good at playing the classical guitar. He can play it so well that many people thought he was a professional guitarist. I remember he made a music book called “Emily” that had notes, chords, and guitar tutorials. I believe I gained inspiration to play guitar from him, because not so long after that I started my own tiny folk song band with friends at school. Tell us about your teachers / mentors The songs at school were mostly classical Thai music. I learned them from Kru Usa, my first singing teacher, who is still teaching today. When I attended university, I had voice training classes with Professor Bruce Gaston. The last two teachers who prepared me to be a singer were Kru Pong, a member of Kum-Pa-Nee band, and Kru Nim, who composed numerous hits to this very day. Do you teach singing? I currently do not teach singing due to my tight schedule but was asked by many people to do so. I am one of the committee leaders of a church called Agape Baptist Church, Bangkok, with the responsibility of caring for the worship team. Apart from concerts and private events, I mostly spend time practicing worship songs at church and coaching our youth to sing. How do you handle mistakes during the performance? I have recorded almost 400 songs throughout my career. I usually remember their lyrics, but there were times when I suddenly forgot them while performing on stage. I just let the audience sing along and ended with a smile. I believe sincerity and faith can overcome all obstacles and mistakes.

photo by Siwa Anontachai words by Crispin Paton-Smith

Do you get nervous before a performance? Usually I am confident while singing on stage, since I gained experience from being the school’s lead singer. Being an artist and singing in major concerts, however, is different. The excitement will always be there, motivating me to deliver fresh feelings to the audience even if it’s my thousandth time singing a particular song. What advice would you give for nervous beginners? From my experience, telling yourself that the audiences are friends who are always willing to sing and have fun helps calm the nervousness. Always smile and move forward, making the best out of every moment. How often and for how long do you practice? I thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to practice and sing worship music every week. I often record my voice, listening to the mistakes and adjusting accordingly. I also practice by benchmarking with the piano’s notes to stabilize and exercise my vocal cords. Singing in the shower also helps! How do you balance your music with other obligations? My family has 4 members which include my parents, my niece and I. I have to look after my family, but at the same time, I still have to work. My niece, who I looked after since she was 3 years old, has a good job now so we both help each other and take care of our elders at home. I spend a half day on Saturday and whole day on Sunday at church, so the rest of week I will stay home with my parents. I deeply appreciate what God plans for me every day. Tell us about your collaboration with Bird Thongchai. The concert took place at IMPACT Arena in February. We spent a full year practicing singing and dancing for it. We had an incredible time on stage, especially when we heard the audiences sing along. It made me realize how much our fans missed us and how these songs were still in their hearts. Which song is special for you and gives you goose bumps? The first album, “Plaek Trong Tee Hua Jai (The Heart is Strange)” was my debut from a person that loved singing who then became a professional artist. The album contains my favorite song “Yak Yud Ve La (Want to Stop Time)”, which brings me joy and even tears every time I sing it. Another album is Sweet Love Songs vol.1, featuring the song “Ruk Tur…Kue Khum Tob (Loving You is the Answer).” I personally worked with this cover song, characterized by beautiful lyrics and imagery that promises an exquisite experience for all listeners. “Have a Nice Day” is also a special album, bringing international classics of the 70’s to cover under the touch of pop jazz. The album contains music that freshens the experience of the audience. “Have a Nice Day” features my cover of “Endless Love” – please check it out on YouTube! What are your plans for the future? The future is uncertain, but I believe the greatest way to prepare for it is to make the best out of every moment.

JOHNNY McGEORGE & JEREMY BRIGGS Who said the best things in life were free? Some foolish pauper or bankrupt billionaire no doubt. It’s true, a tropical sunset may be free and yes, the inestimable vision of the aurora Borealis in the Northern skies is priceless. But neither add any credibility to your eight-figure salaries if you’re hanging out at the Hamptons. When keeping up with the Joneses, nobody gives a crap how pretty snowflakes are if there’s diamond encrusted “anything you can think of” to stick on the black Amex and swindle a tax return from. And god forbid you want to discuss the beauty of nature’s fractallated essence when your annoying neighbour has just shelled out on a set of platinum golf clubs. Materialism is ever-present in today’s fickle society. It rears its head in every inch of our commercialised world. Unless you live in a tree in a faraway corner of nowhere, it will infect you no less than your superficial counterparts. But what the hell…you only live once and who wants to be the richest man in the graveyard? If you had a million thousand billion dollars to fritter away, sure you’d want as much gold as you could eat, washed down with freshly squeezed diamond juice served in a unicorn ivory grail. Just like the rest of us, admit it. So let us ponder on what a bottomless bank account could do for us. With unlimited funds you can have what everyone else already has, only yours will shine, sparkle and dazzle with abominable over-expense, leaving everybody – Joneses included – drooling with envy. We are proud to present some of the most bizarrely exorbitant and senselessly pricey things available in the market - for those who truly have everything but shame. Enjoy.

POL AND HA S NEVE R B E E N S Y N O N YM O U S WITH SUPERCARS BUT TIMES ARE CHANGING AND THE AWE-INSPIRING ARRINERA HUSSARYA IS A SURE SIGN THAT THE FUTURE IS HERE AND THE FUTURE IS NOW. Leading the change is Warsaw-based boutique automaker Arrinera with Poland’s first ever production Supercar the Hussarya coupé. Named after the formidable Polish cavalry, the stealthy powerhouse Hussarya is a thoroughly reworked version of the concept supercar that Arrinera exhibited in 2011. The graphene chassis (a combination of carbon fiber and Kevlar), saves weight while actually increasing structural rigidity. This with an all-new sheet metal that is noticeably sleeker and more aerodynamic, gives the car explosive-power aesthetics. Esteemed British engineer Lee Noble has played an integral role in fine tuning the chassis and handling, ensuring it drives just as good as it looks. To Maximise high-speed stability, the Hussarya features a number of aero elements including an active rear spoiler. This helps provide down force at high speeds and under braking can deploy to serve as an air brake. 50

ONE COAST

According to the latest spec sheet, the Hussarya is powered by an 8.2-liter V-8 producing more than 800 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. The 650-horsepower predecessor was capable of tearing from zero to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 211 mph. The upgraded production model promises much more. Production of the Hussarya commences later this year, with testing of prototypes, like this one unveiled at the recent Poznań Auto Show in Poland, nearing the final stages. Charging with 800 Horses, the Polish Cavalry looks set to destroy anything in its path. www.arrinera.com

The dictionary defines a custom motorcycle as a motorcycle with stylistic and/or structural changes to the 'standard' massproduced machine offered by major manufacturers. Mr. Mooyong from “Zeus Custom” in Bangkok has been making a rather special name for himself in the custom world by taking a somewhat rare and unique motorcycle in itself the “Iron One Thai Stallion” and creating with love and passion a small and affordable custom motorcycle that even hard core Harley Riders would have no concerns about being seen on.

The final piece is always finished though with further custom details decided on by Mooyong and the new owner making every bike not only a work of art but also each and everyone an original. HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS Meet Jongsuwat Angsuvar nsi r i. Managing Di rector at Adler Subhashok Galler y B a ng kok a nd the youngest son of rea l estate t yco o n a nd a r t co l l e cto r Su b h a s h o k , we s at down to discus s g rowing up abroad, his cros scultural exper iences and all things ar t. words by Stuart Langrish

Tell us a little about yourself and your background? I recently moved back to Thailand from England, where I studied for 12 years. I started off at a boarding school in a small town called Bedford where I spent my school years, before I moved to London for university. During the first 4 years in London, I went to an art university and majored in Film and Television; I then went on to do a master’s degree in Marketing and Advertising at London School of Business and Finance. What were the advantages of studying abroad for you? Having studied abroad and at a boarding school at a very young age it taught me to be self-reliant: you just have to look after yourself and clean up after your own mess, metaphorically and literally speaking. I’ve never worked in England long enough to be able to compare its business world to the one in Thailand, but I can certainly notice the difference in mentality. How has it affected your philosophy towards business? Thai business culture seems to spend more time in meetings than getting out there to get the job done. You don’t get to do your work until after office hours because you spend all day sitting in meeting rooms. The importance of deadlines also seems to be less valid here with most people, which can be frustrating at times. My philosophy towards business has always been that as long as you get the job done on time and get it done right, you don’t have to follow the nine-to-five hours. In that regards, I don’t think the Thai business culture has affected my own philosophy. How did you get involved in Subhashok Art Centre? Subhashok the Arts Centre is a family business, so I have always been involved from day one. However, I didn’t get fully involved until last year when we signed a venture with a French gallery from Paris and opened a new department that focuses on the international market.

What is it like working with your father? Working with your father in general, I think, always carries some sort of pressure for any son as you have big shoes to fill. My father, Khun Subhashok, in particular, has achieved quite a lot and quite early in his career, so there are even higher expectations on myself to strive harder. Having said that, I enjoy working along his side. My father would not spoon-feed me with help, but he would guide me through my own learning and let me make mistakes, which I’m grateful for. What is your typical day like? My typical day starts at nine o’clock where I spend time answering emails. My office door is always open, so I often get staff coming in to discuss work or asking questions. As I know that sometimes they need my decision or approval before they can continue their work, I tend to put my work aside and give priority to the staff’s work issues first. After 5 o’clock in the afternoon everything calms down: meetings done; artists met; collectors taken care of; staff’s work issues resolved; and that’s when I get to do my own work. From time to time, this would be the period where I go into my father’s office to discuss my own work and ask questions. If there were a gallery opening that night, I would leave my office around 7pm to have dinner before heading off to the gallery. How did the merger with the Parisian gallery Adler come about?

Galerie Adler Paris see potential in Thai artists. Their aim is to create a market for Thai artists and essentially bring them on to the internationally level. Both Galerie Adler Paris and Subhashok the Arts Centre share that same goal, although we are more from the educational approach while they are from the commercial approach. In any case, both of us believe in our Thai artists and so we decided to open the new brand “Adler Subhashok Gallery” to focus on the international market for Thai artists.

FocusABOUT HIM

What do you see in the future for Subhashok? Will it focus on Thai Contemporary or expand on Adler’s International collection?

Our focus will always be about contemporary Thai art, but we are trying to push our artists to produce an international standard of quality work. In order to do so, from time to time we will need to invite international artists to exhibit in Thailand so that local artists can see where they stand in context to the international art world. What are the main challenges you face? We know it is not easy – the challenge is to bring in harmony the understanding of Thai artists with the international gallery system while at the same time not over-stretch them and lose the personal bonds between artists and the gallery. The other big challenge is to get support from Thai collectors. Many serious collectors either buy art works from senior artists or big international names only, but neglect to support young emerging artists who have potential. Without the support from local collectors, it is very tough for both artists and galleries to stand by ourselves long enough to fight for our goal. Do you have a favourite Thai artist? I have many artists that are my favourites and it would be unfair to mention one without the other. If I have to name one that I am currently working closely with, it would be Preyawit Nilachulaka. We worked together back in October 2014 for a group show, “Dramathais”, which was very successful, and now we are planning a solo show with him in the near future.

Preyawit has a good sense of humour – very satirical and sarcastic and at the same time very universal. Although his subjects are mostly about the Thai society, his works could be applied to any part of the world. Which art galleries are you inspired by? 21_21 Design Sight gallery in Tokyo is one of my favourites. This museum is co-owned by Issey Miyake who has a forward vision about the contemporary art world. The space and the architectural design are very similar to our gallery in Bangkok, so I hope to learn from them and eventually surpass them in the future! What do you do for fun away from work? My favourite phrase is “When in doubt, go work out”, and that’s exactly what I do. Sometimes when work get tough and I feel like being dragged down, I like to go to the gym and sweat it off. Otherwise, I enjoy browsing through books so I often go to book stores and spend hours in there, forgetting about the outside world. Traveling is also an important part of my life and it is what I look forward to all the time. What are some of your favourite places in Bangkok? If I have to choose a favourite spot in Bangkok, I would say the Sukhumvit area. We have unique, small cafes almost around every corner including a board games cafe, and wide varieties of restaurants from gourmet Italian to home-cooked Thai food. Of course there is also Subhashok the Arts Centre and Adler Subhashok Gallery in the neighbourhood where art comes in all forms and you might discover new kind of arts that you never knew you’d like!

BALANCED ON THE BRINK OF TRANQUILITY Oman’s Alila Jabal Akhdar brings bedrock luxury to the perfect precipice words by Stuart Langrish 66

SUMMIT SPECTACULAR If peace and quiet rank next highest to expansive views and stargazing smorgasbords in your list of luxury travel destination must-haves, then Alila Jabal Akhdar is sure to please. Located in Jabal Akhdar, which means “The Green Mountain” in Arabic, it is unquestionably one of Oman’s most spectacular regions in a country boasting a wealth of natural treasures. Perched on a cliff edge 2,000 metres above sea level, the resort overlooks a jaw-dropping gorge and is surrounded by instagrammable panoramas of the Al Hajar Mountains. The sheer magnitude of the views on offer cannot be understated, and it will take considerable willpower to look anywhere else during your stay at this remote boutique paradise. Having opened in May 2014 as Singapore-based Alila’s first Middle Eastern property, the LEED certified resort is a carefully weighted combination of Omani tradition mixed with contemporary living; blending seamlessly with its rugged surroundings. The hotel consists of 78 suites located within the main building or arranged in twelve flat-roofed clusters typical of the region, and two carefully spaced out villas with private pools, providing guests with a guaranteed escape from the distractions of modernity. Through these uninterrupted hypnotic vistas and a sun-drenched infinity pool; the silence that envelops Alila Jabal Akhdar is complete in its ability to inspire a serenity within even the heaviest of workaholics.

Approximately 2 ½ hours drive from Muscat International Airport, and just an hour from the twinkling lights of Nizwa in the valley below, a police checkpoint ensures only the bravest 4x4’s make the drive. A pick-up service is available for those that wish to concentrate on the majestic views at each turn and not the sheer drops along the serpentine stretch to the summit.

THE ART OF DESIGN

With sustainability at the forefront, the brainchild behind Alila Jabal Akhdar’s design was UK-based architecture firm Atkins. Using LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) principles, inspiration was taken to carefully reflect the region’s vernacular influence. The local stones sourced on-site during excavation wrap each building to create an almost camouflage effect within the dramatic scenery, and provide a warmth and depths of colour that complement the understated styling. The design does not cut corners – they have used traditional Omani Fort construction techniques to impress upon the viewer that this is a building made out of the landscape and not in spite of it. The resort grounds also feature ‘aflaj’ water systems, in a nod to Oman’s traditional system of irrigation channels and flora includes fig and olive trees, as well as pomegranate and apricot trees, familiar to this region.

Private Oasis

Within the stone-clad exteriors conceals a unique combination of minimalistic style and cultural warmth designed by Thai outfit P49 Deesign. Decorative pieces are not mass-made copies but authentic items bought at local markets. Pieces include copper ornaments and handmade pottery from Bahla, a town famous for such wares– thus making each room strikingly individual and memorable. Earthy tones of wood and stone are accented with rugs and hand-woven baskets in bold yet warm hues, while the leaves of the juniper tree, hand-painted on a wall in every suite by a local artist, bring an element of nature indoors. Bathrooms are generous in size and bathed in light, with views over the picturesque wilderness outside. A majestic ovoid bath carved from a block of pale marble takes centre stage by the window and guarantees the soak of a lifetime. Imposing by design, signature features on each suite include the fort-like doors crafted from solid wood. In the lobby area the iconic damask rose pattern is displayed, representing the flowers that were so vital to the region’s economy of rosewater and ‘attar’, rose oil. These touches showcase a building rich in culture and respectful of the Al Hajar mountains cultural identity. An imposing fire place is centrally located to draw the most discerning eye away from the captivating view beyond, and is positively welcome during the colder months after one of the many hiking trails available. www.alilahotels.com/jabalakhdar ONE COAST

At the heart of it all, the welcoming living room, restaurant and bar evoke slowed simplicity. Low-slung sofas, rope hammocks and abundant wickerwork harmoniously unite under a thatched ceiling. The entirety exudes a sense of ease and lightness. An emphasis on the essential and the celebration of traditional craftsmanship and local Greek culture are the guiding principles behind both the design and hospitality. Mixing minimalism with rich textures and handcrafted details, nothing is overbearing but just right.

ABOUT VOLUNTARY SERVICE OVERSEAS Their vision is simple: a world without poverty. Their approach is unique: sending skilled volunteers from sectors such as health, education and business to work with partners who have requested their help. VSO enables a two-way exchange that benefits the volunteer and the community they serve far beyond the life of the placement. VSO volunteers do whatever needs to be done to break down the barriers that trap people in poverty. They help give children a future through education, improve the standards of care in hospitals and train poor people in the skills they need to earn a living.

BE THE DIFFERENCE VOLUNTEER ABROAD VSO is the world’s leading international development organisation that uses volunteers to fight poverty and reduce inequality. Each year through they improve healthcare for around two million people, help around two million children get a better education and improve HIV and AIDS prevention, care and support for over three million people. All of this is accomplished by volunteers: national volunteers, who work within their own communities; youth volunteers, who come together across cultures to work on community projects, and international volunteers, who work in their area of professional expertise. VSO volunteer Ayla Ozkan is a midwife and midwife educator with mentorship qualifications. Until recently she worked at a major London hospital. She is now working on a project to improve the health of women and newborns in North-eastern Cambodia; developing a midwife training curriculum, guiding workshops and helping the midwives feel more confident in their skills and empowered in their work. She is supported by the Soroptomist Club of Central Birmingham through their community Volunteer Linking programme. “My placement is with the Partnering to Save Lives Programme, working with midwives and midwife trainers across around fifty health centres in the most deprived and parts of rural Cambodia. The midwifery training out here is very poor: most midwives will qualify without knowing what to do in the event of any sort of emergency and many without ever even seeing a birth. While the maternal death rate has improved in the last few years, the outcomes still aren't great and, for infants, it is much worse. The biggest killers out here are infection and oxygen deprivation before or during birth, so I'm putting an emphasis onto recognising early signs of foetal distress, newborn resuscitation and basic but fundamental infection control issues like hand-washing and hygiene when handling babies. There are few statistics about health outcomes in these regions, so I'm also collecting data to help this and future projects to be better informed about exactly what is needed at these centres and by the midwives. Being able to spend time in the health centres, learning exactly what each of them needs in terms of developing their practical skills and knowledge is crucial and allows for an open forum to discuss the midwives' questions or problem-solve often basic medical scenarios. Last week I taught a midwife how to use a stethoscope as, despite having one at the centre, she confessed to not knowing how to use it. Some of the remote health centres are as far as forty miles from the nearest hospital, with poor road conditions and no access to transportation in an emergency. Many of the dirt roads will flood and become totally impassable in the rainy season, so it is crucial to get these life-saving skills to the midwives, who can then give their mothers and babies the best possible chance of survival.”

VSO AT A GLANCE: • • • •

40,000+ people have volunteered with VSO 27 countries currently have VSO programmes 660 local partners work with them worldwide 174,000 people trained by volunteers last year

VSO’s volunteer linking programme enables community groups to donate to VSO in exchange for a unique link between the organisation and a VSO volunteer for the duration of their placement. To find out more about community volunteer linking with VSO get in touch: fundraising@vso.org.uk

ONE COAST MAGAZINE SAT DOWN WITH JAMES RUCKLEY, A FOUNDER OF MUDSTACLE WEBSITE – HOME OF THE UK OBSTACLE COURSE RACES AND MUD RUNNING, AND ALSO ELITE TEAM RUNNER FOR UK OBSTACLE COURSE R ACE MAGAZINE TO DISCUSS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING SPORTS IN THE WORLD.

A quick Google of ‘Obstacle Course Racing’ will gain results of Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, Tough Guy and send terror into the minds of many. So what is OCR and why is it so scary? Obstacle course racing is built as a sport based on trail and mud running where competitors must complete a series of challenges (obstacles) along the way. These obstacles differ from event to event, but the more common are walls, water crossings and weighted carries. Some of the extreme obstacles in races include crawling through barbed wire mud pits, electrical shocks, getting chased by zombies, and having to jump through fire! Races vary in length from a few miles to marathon distance, with courses designed to test competitors endurance, strength, speed and, dexterity. It is currently one of the fastest growing sports in the world, with over 4 million participants taking part last year in the US alone. 88

EcoHABITAT

Though the Steeplechase has been an Olympic event since 1900, the birth of OCR started back in 1987 when Billy Wilson turned his farm in Perton, Staffordshire into a daring winter assault course. He called it Tough Guy, and the world of running would never be the same again. Tough Guy still stands today with several thousand making the annual trip to test one of the hardest events in the sport, where thousands will drop out with hypothermia and many more will crawl across the finish line clinging to consciousness. The course, a 15 km run finished off with the dreaded ‘Killing fields’ where miles of obstacles are broken up with freezing water sections to test every participant’s mental grit. Make no mistake, this is tough and will test everything you think you have. Legendary English racer James Appleton one said of it “The simplest way of putting it is that if Hell ever froze over, Tough Guy would give it serious competition for the final punishment of the Damned. There is no pre-determined distance, the course changes each year, and everything you go through seems never-ending.”

Tough Guy is the oldest and by far one of the hardest, but the likes of Tough Mudder are paving the way for more modern events. Tell anyone you’re an obstacle racer and it’s likely they’ll reply ‘Oh like those Tough Mudder things?’. Arriving in only 2010, Tough Mudder has already become the world’s most popular event with the likes of Spartan closing in. Both events are marketed differently with Tough Mudder being a personal challenge for all, with no timing and no prizes this isn’t a race, simply a Mudder family of competitors completing the course together. Spartan are much more competitive with every race being timed and the top 10 racers in each event qualifying for the Spartan World Championships held in America. Keep an eye on Spartan, they’ve just hosted their first event out in Dubai, many more to come I’m sure! Whilst these are the leaders the United Kingdom and other countries have a host of less known events offering equally brilliant races. One of the best known is the Rat Race Dirty Weekend, a gruelling 20 mile race with over 200+ obstacles culminating in a music festival. Abu Dhabi hosted its first ever Desert Warrior challenge this spring at Yas Marina, while Wadi Adventure has now seen nine races held at its base in Al Ain. The future of obstacle racing is bright, with thousands of annual events world-wide, so keep your eyes peeled because the sport is exploding. www.mudstacle.com / www.obstacleracemagazine.com

IS THE END REALLY NIGH? WILL THE HUMAN RACE STAND THE TEST OF TIME? AND WHAT, IF ANYTHING, CAN THE FIGURES TELL US?

words by Johnny McGeorge & Jeremy Briggs

THE POPULATION OF THE DEAD If we look at our planet on a macro scale as nothing more than a speck of dust floating on a sunbeam in an embarrassingly small Galaxy lost in a potentially infinite universe; are we, the human race merely an insignificant swarm of ego-inflated parasites recklessly destroying a ball of molten rock? Or are we the bees knees of evolution, the best that 600 billion years of ethereal expansion has to offer? Sure, we invented cars and planes to play with - and the God concept to alleviate our fears of the vast unknown. We even invented award ceremonies to celebrate our achievements. So we must be pretty awesome. Yet despite our self-appraisal, we still haven’t figured out a way to keep ourselves warm without depleting all but all of our darling earth’s natural resources. And that’s only in the last 200 years. While some see the rise of humanity as the greatest success story of all time, others fear that we are a ticking time bomb of self destruction, on an unstoppable path of over-consumption leading to imminent extinction. Scientists speculate that if we don’t change our selfish ways, then before a bespectacled geek with lab coat and graph can say ‘I told you so’, we will all be dead and gone, to be remembered as nothing more than a mere drop in the mighty ocean of time. If that. So consider 200,000 years of human perpetuation. How many of us have ever lived - and died? Well, current guesstimates stand at 106 billion. That’s a lot of hunting and gathering, tool fashioning, fire building, wheel developing, warmongering, car building, coffee drinking, hob-nobbing and finger pointing over a relatively short period of time. Or is it? Clocking the earth’s history in “real time”, the profileration of human life has risen, then climbed and since soared out of control over a fleeting five minute period. For more perspective, just enough time to drink your ubergrande $tarbucks fairtrade organic skinny soya zombieccino and post a photo of it on Facetagram for social affirmation. Our population currently stands at a comfortable 7.3 billion, leaving us just enough room to swing a punch. But that number has grown exponentially by 600% since the dawn of the industrial revolution and the invention of modern medicine a mere blink of an eye ago. Mass infestation within one sip of that overpriced coffee you only bought because you like the logo. According to projections from believable experts on the matter, at the current rate of human expansion, we will reach the earth’s hypothetical maximum carrying capacity of 10 billion by as horrifyingly soon as 2050.

92

ONE COAST

Oooh, the future you say. Well no, it’s 35 years from now. In 2050, your kids might have a little more to worry about than what colour Porsche best screams out ‘mid-life crisis’. So, what can we ascertain so far? Well, barring a miracle, pretty soon here on Planet Earth we’re going to face some serious overcrowding issues, most notably a lack of food, water and (un)necessary energy resources. But will we really hit that number? Or will the population of the dead rise exponentially at a similar or faster rate through strategic wars, untended famines, unreported genocides and trendy diseases? However it happens, some form of mass population control is on the cards, and although an out and out cull seems like science fiction, it could just become our reality. World Wars and diseases are not even responsible for a quarter of the 20th Century death toll, so what will it take to get us back on track? That’s a lot of planes flown into skyscrapers before we can even get close to making a dent. Perhaps the ruling corporatocracies will implement a surreptitious sterilisation program, brightly packaged in your favorite brand of legal narcotic fast-food, cigarette, chocobar or sugarwater. It could be in your toothpaste, washing detergent or basic water source (remember the fluoridation we never asked for?) But more than likely it will be an undisclosed active ingredient in the ‘must-have’ vaccines you and everyone you’ll ever know were scared into having by your friendly GP. Healthy paranoia aside, somewhere out there lies the solution to our potentially impending doom, but most of us will be far too preoccupied by the sheer importance of our next status updates to worry whether a Brave New World is being masterminded by the elusive 1%. After all, indifference is bliss. Although the figures suggest a bleak future, some of us can take comfort that come 2050, we will have lived long enough for none of this to really matter at all. That is if we haven’t already died from cancer, famine, obesity & co, anxiety, boredom or a combination of the above. In fact if you avoid these pitfalls and make it 35 years into the future, then pats on the back all round. Anyone less selfish can take solace in knowing that we have done better, and almost undoubtedly had more fun than the dinosaurs ever did. If this doesn’t help then always remember our beautiful planet will very probably be struck by another pesky asteroid anyway, at which point life as we know it, and more importantly all records of this article, will be wiped out in one fell swoop. In conclusion, c’est la vie, carpe diem, que sera sera, etc etc... - And ponder the fact we, the proverbial life of the planetary party, are vastly outnumbered by ghosts.

EcoHABITAT The numbers presented below are highly speculative but are as accurate as modern science allows. It is widely accepted that prior to 2015 there has been somewhere between 106 and 140 billion homo sapiens born into the world. The graphic below uses the conservative figure (106bn) as the basis for a concentric circle graph. The central red dot is scaled to represent people currently living (red) versus the dead (white). The vertical line represents time. The exponential rise in human population is recorded as increasing from a plateau of 1 billion in 1800 to the current population of 7.3 billion in just over 200 years.

ONE COAST Table Tales Tucked away in the quiet corner of Cr ystal Bay, arguably Koh Samui’s most beautiful beach is ROCK SALT, an innovative eatery that fuses grass roots sustainability with accessible artisan grub. Chef and owner DAVID LLOYD serves up his third Table Tales where kitchen and bar collaborate.

THE MIXOLOGISTS KITCHEN

A good cocktail bar has a lot in common with a good kitchen. There needs to be order and cleanliness, attention to detail in the presentation, flavours, colours and textures. The ingredients need to be fresh and utilize the local produce when in season and garnishes should act as a visual aid, which playfully highlight the characteristics of the drink. But most importantly, it must have the ‘wow’ factor. Wow Factor: the ability to extract an uncontrollable “WOW!” from the guest, whether on delivery or at their first taste. Chef-cooks and drinks mixologists, when passionate and talented about their work are of very similar stock. The concoction of drinks or food to a high sensory level, often through a spontaneous, creative process -at high speed for paying guests, is a skill - but when it is done with passion and love - it becomes art. When you have a chef and a mixologist working together under one roof, with the same vision and passion, you can expect some great things. In my restaurant we find it a natural partnership to combine the techniques and themes from the kitchen and the bar together, creating a correlation between the drinks and food menus. Certain drinks on the bar menu at Rock Salt are more suited to be made in the kitchen due to the list of ingredients we use. The Sous- Chef has much involvement in the preparation of the bar stock. The bar fridges and shelves are filled with ‘Mis En Place’ (chef- speak for your prep of ingredients and equipment) directly from the kitchen. Our bloody Mary for example is almost like a Gaspacho soup with booze. Using almost all fresh ingredients, we take one or two of our organic Chiang Mai grown tomatoes, locally grown organic celer y and red peppers, juice them through our centrifugal juicer, which makes sure the juice is free of debris. Then we add our own house-made Singapore chilli crab sauce from the kitchen, which we use for the Soft Shell Crab Burger and also the occasional daily special of Singapore Chilli Crab. The recipe for this sauce is as follows; Season and roast chilies, garlic, ginger and shallots drizzled in olive oil, then blend them with fresh clam juice from vermouth steamed clams, rice-wine vinegar, rice wine, tamari and sesame oil. This is then shaken with premium Russian Vodka, Full of spice and Umami. the glass is garnished with a fresh romaine leaf , lemon, rasher of crispy bacon and Japanese Shichimi seasoning, all of which have come from the kitchen’s ‘mis-en-place’. Check it out.

CULINARY SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY With the same focus on the bar as in the kitchen and by using as much fresh and organic fruit, veg and home-made syrups and sauces from the kitchen, we can offer clean tasting and ‘healthy’ cocktails. Backed up with natural flavours rather than artificial mixes from cartons or bottles with dubious ingredients and a worryingly long shelf-lie. This makes for a different experience and hopefully will bolster your immune system whilst generating a healthy buzz! The difference in making our own syrups, bitters, juices, mixers and infusions is simple. It tastes much better, it saves you money, it creates an alternative ethical procurement option away from the big corporations and therefore adds to our creibility. Plus, its great fun and so easy. It’s the same as caring about where our eggs come from and what conditions the livestock was raised in to produce our meat. Some people are in business soley to make money, but Rock Salt’s passion is responsible feeding to make people feel good. As food producers we have a responsibility to the longterm health of our customers and our impact on the earth. We have a significant impact on the industr y with the amount of produce we go through at the restaurant. At Rock Salt we strive to remain thoughtful and responsible from the farm to the plate/glass. So my infatuation with nutrition and ethical food production on a personal level, naturally transfers to the restaurant. I hope that the way we operate educates people and eventually, this way becomes the standard in the food industry. ~David Lloyd

Arriving in Southeast Asia over fifteen years ago, Simon of KohSamuiEvents has since held many residencies in Thailand including a 5 year stint at the Full Moon Party. You can catch Simon Solo in one of his many residencies on Koh Samui, whether busting out banging house at Bar Solo or playing poolside vocal house and soul jams at Beach Republic. www.kohsamuievents.com

HE D K ANDI - TROPICAL HOUSE Tropical House started as a bit of joke but now has a huge following with producers such as Kygo pioneering the sax, pan flutes and‘plucky’ synths oozing with TROPICAL feels. And it’s a really great feeling when they get it right. But get it right you must. The temptation to just start remixing classics around the sound is rife. Here we have a couple of examples how to do and how not to do it. Fade has a timeless vocal which with a bit of echo sounds incredible in tropical house. But unfortunately Carl Hanaghan’s ‘Show Me Love’ edit didn’t work out as well and some tracks should just be left alone. The album meanders inoffensively but with the sound gathering pace you can look forward to the quality rising. Hed Kandi might have jumped the gun a little, but at least they’ve laid the foundation for what may just be the next big thing.

PRODIGY - THE DAY IS MY E NE MY Wow these guys are still really angry. The soundtrack to my youth and the rest of the jilted generation. I remember bus and train journeys listening to their albums, my stomach in knots with apprehension of what the world of rave had in store for me and as a young adult not being let down hearing their tracks belted out to thousands of ravers in aircraft hangers and the like. The Prodigy were everything. 25 years later and they’re still putting out albums. This didn’t disappoint although obviously expectations were lowered, so that probably helped. ‘The Day Is My Enemy’, ‘Nasty’ and ‘Ibiza’ are all banging as you would expect a Prodigy track to be, close your eyes and picture yourself there – better still go catch one of their shows, they’re touring don’t you know?

MUMFORD & SONS - WILDER MIND This is a pretty mediocre offering by Mumford & Sons. Sure it ticks all the right boxes, it’s far from bad but it’s also a long way from good too. I played it in the car on a long journey and it did the trick; nice chilled love songs and some big rock tunes to mix things up a bit. Their dynamic seems to be big stage, the next big Brit rock pop group, though the overtones are largely American – more than one similarity to Bruce Springsteen was made. The American market is the one to break and having similarities to ‘The Boss’ can’t be a bad thing, unless originality is what you’re going for because that is the one this album sadly lacks. Worth a listen or at least a play in the car.

MOS 2 015 - M ARBE LL A SE SSIONS What’s with Marbella all of a sudden? Sure it’s the jewel of the Costa del Sol alongside Puerto Banus, but is a scene of its own developing? It seems so with Ministr y of Sound’s third consecutive compilation. While the Balearics are still submerged in deep house and techno, this refreshing garage revival is welcomed. Never a huge garage admirer, I do enjoy music with feeling which this has in abundance. It’s a perfect holiday feeling soundtrack and it rolls nicely. A sound synonymous with East London may have found a new spiritual home or at least a place in the sun. Some big tracks like Axlex Adairs ‘You Make Me Feel Better ‘and Mike Mago & Dragonette’s ‘Outlines’ bring the party vibes and ‘Ey Yo’ by MK & KANT amongst others provide the filth. With individual tracks and three full length mixes, this is a must buy.

Based on the twelve animal signs on the lunar calendar, the Chinese Zodiac brings us our star signs in beast form... With Thailand steeped in Chinese tradition, each issue we will look at the Chinese Zodiac and find out what advantages and disadvantages there are to being a Snake, a Dragon or even the unloved Rat! This issue we take a good look at the character of the Rooster.

Good Health! People born in a year of the Rooster are typically healthy. They are active and enjoy sports such as hiking and swimming. Roosters don’t get sick very often because due to their active lifestyles, they tend to fight illness well. Even when they do become ill, they feel better quickly. More prone to malaise than physical illness, Roosters can be a little sensitive and prone to stress which can leave them moody at times.

THE ROOSTER People born in a year of the Rooster are very observant.

Highly motivated, Roosters make their careers a priority and are generally hard working, multi-talented and able to adapt to a variety of career types.

Hardworking, resourceful, courageous and talented, Roosters are often very confident about themselves. Always active, amusing and popular among the crowd, Roosters are known to be talkative, outspoken, frank, open, honest, and loyal individuals. They like to be the centre of attention and always appear attractive and beautiful.

Roosters are loyal and make devoted friends. They always keep their promises and are always true to their word. Sensitive individuals may find it hard to get along well with Roosters because these birds love to brag about themselves and their accomplishments, which may make others uncomfortable.

In fact, Roosters are happiest when they are surrounded by others, whether at a party or any other social gathering. They enjoy the spotlight and will exhibit their charm at any occasion. With high regard for their own voice, Roosters expect others to listen to them while they speak - and as such can become agitated if others don’t. Vain and boastful, Roosters like to brag about themselves and their accomplishments. Their continually seeking the unwavering attention of others annoys people around them at times.

Famous Roosters Dirk Bogarde, Michael Caine, Eric Clapton, Joan Collins, Errol Flynn, Goldie Hawn, Katherine Hepburn, Jayne Mansfield, Yoko Ono, Dolly Parton, Michelle Pfeiffer Compatibility Roosters are best suited to the strong personalities of Ox or Snake and worst suited to Rats, Rabbits, Horses, or Pig.
