The trend is perfect for tropical life as it plays with dewy skin and fluid colour. Forget about perfect placement or bold statements, embrace your lighter side with nudes, champagnes, honeys and neutrals.

Lancome’s French Ballerine collection takes inspiration from the feminity and grace of a ballet dancer. A colour palette of tulle and roses, from the Mocha Queen lipgloss right through to the satin ribbon adorned Rose Ballerine Blush.

It’s equally complimentary with Giorgio Armani’s Effetto Nude collection, capturing the elegance of 1930s Hollywood glamour. Radiance is added to the skin with Fluid Sheer Radiant Pigment and enhanced with a halo-effect from the Effetto Nude palette.

P

ilates is touted as one of the best exercise forms with the least impact on your joints and the most benefit to your body shape, stretch and core.

Most people are unaware of the differences between Yoga and Pilates with most people believing they are one in the same. Yoga is principally a life philosophy which encompasses spiritual values as well as a series of poses called ‘Asana’ which are done in order to benefit the workings of the body and building a mind-body connection. Pilates on the other hand is not a life philosophy, it is simply a series of exercises designed to improve the strength of our core muscles around the abdominals, hips and lower back. Stronger muscles, stress relief and improved circulation are some of the benefits of practising Yoga whereas Pilates tries to strengthen the core stability muscles of our body to improve the way we function in our daily lives. There are a multitude of famous celebrities who swear by Pilates in order to maintain their physique and their day

to day lives - including some very famous footballers! There are two basic forms of Pilates - mat-based Pilates and equipment-based Pilates. Mat-based Pilates, which is the most popular form of Pilates, is a series of exercises performed on the floor using gravity and our own body weight to provide resistance. Equipment-based Pilates, uses specially designed equipment and accessories to provide muscle resistance, using bands and traction machines. Once you learn the basics of Pilates, you can easily practise it at home on the floor with a soft rubber Pilates mat. This will cushion you against the hard surface and stop any joint pain. Turn on the tv, listen to some music – it’s that easy – no machinery, no equipment, just you and the mat! There are lots of Pilates dvd’s you can watch and follow to ensure you get a balanced work-out and target the right muscles and you are completing the exercises correctly and safely so you gain the most benefit.

Increase inner strength, balance and flexibility and craft your body beautiful with pilates.

Just some of the benefits of pilates: • Better posture • Improved flexibility • Toned buttocks and thighs • Toned arms and shoulder area • A flatter stomach and a trimmer stomach • Greater strength and muscle tone • Improved performance

Here’s a simple pilates exercise you can try at home to get you on your way to a leaner, stronger you!

Leg Floats

This exercise can be conducted in sets of 6-10 while alternating legs between repetitions: Lie on your back with your legs bent and feet face-down on the floor so that you are in the preparatory position. While breathing in, lift you knee towards you, while keeping the shin bone parallel to the floor.Your thigh and leg should form a 90 degree angle. While breathing out, extend the leg away from you as far as you can, while keeping your pelvis and chest parallel to the floor. While breathing in, bend your leg back towards you, so that you return to position #2. While breathing out, return the foot to the floor (return to position #1). Repeat steps #2 to #5 on the other leg.

People tend to stretch from their more flexible areas and rely on their better-developed muscles for strength, thus reinforcing postural habits. But being slightly askew can be a good thing. And here’s 5 reasons why you should cherish your imbalances...

Asymmetry wakes you up. Every time we take a

two-sided pose, our hips, shoulders and hamstrings make sure that we have two different experiences. There’s more to notice, less of a tendency to fall into habit patterns and space out. On really dramatic differences – kicking up with the second leg in full arm balance, for instance – it’s less a different pose than a whole new, if somewhat unwelcome, continent to explore. Nonetheless, asymmetry keeps it new.

Asymmetries introduce you to your own body.

Yogis know which hip is stiff, which shoulder is tight, which hamstring resists in forward bends. Long before the stiff hip starts to wake us up in the middle of the night with a dull ache or a sharp pain, we’re at work on the solution. As we resolve imbalances on one level, another level appears, a lot like peeling an onion.

Asymmetries allow you insight into how your mind constructs categories. Do you label the sides

as “easy” and “hard,” or worse, “good” and “bad”? Is there a moral judgement implied on that problematic shoulder? Try “sticky” and “smooth,” in part, because there are times when “sticky” is good.

The smooth side teaches joy, but the sticky side teaches attention to detail. When you’re on

the sticky side, you aren’t tempted to glide on through to your deepest place. That means you have time to stop and feel the effect of every action, and what you learn will stick with you – an example of good stickiness at work.

Finally, having a tighter or more difficult side provides boundless opportunity to practice friendliness and open-hearted curiosity towards ourselves. And since we always seem to find

ourselves the most difficult people to be friendly to, all opportunities are welcome. www.myfiveminuteyoga.com

Samujana’s stunning seaview residences located in Choeng Mon on the northeastern tip of Koh Samui have garnered themselves a reputation for quality, and it is easy to understand why. With sweeping uninterrupted views of the crystal blue waters of Samui, each Samujana residence is unique unto itself without compromising the feeling of limitless space and pure indulgence. Gary Fell, an award winning designer of Gfab Architects has carefully designed Samujana to produce exceptional living spaces both indoor and out, using modern clean lines blending contemporary luxury and Thai architecture without losing sight of the environment in which these 6 star residences are located. One Coast Magazine

55

Gary has been conscientious and largely preserved the incredible site, by building Samujana villas around the existing natural topography of the site. As a result of his award-winning design, several villas have mature trees and rock formations incorporated either into the living areas, the gardens or the pools. This gives the villas individuality rarely found in developments of this size and in this location. The residences, all with their own unique touches and slightly varied layouts are designed with space and comfort in mind, allowing enough space from each bedroom or area that you may not even bump into those who are staying with you.

ingapore. BMW Asia has unveiled the thirdgeneration BMW X5, an all-round Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) that is equipped to meet the most exacting and varied demands. The new BMW X5 will make its local debut in three variants; a V8-powered BMW X5 xDrive50i with up to 450hp, the 306hp petrol six-cylinder engine BMW X5 xDrive35i and a six-cylinder in-line diesel-powered BMW X5 xDrive30d with up to 258hp. As BMW’s first SAV, the BMW X5 literally started the premium SAV segment and has since become a global best-seller of its class with more than 1.3 million units sold worldwide since the launch of the first gen X5. “Thanks to Efficient Dynamics technology, the new BMW X5 has definitely surpassed its predecessor in terms of raised performance and reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This is

achieved through measures including intelligent lightweight construction techniques and aerodynamic optimisation. Compared to its predecessor, the power output of the new BMW X5 xDrive50i has increased by 10 percent and is 16 percent more fuel efficient than before,” said Mr Sethipong Anutarasoti, Corporate Affairs Director of BMW Group Asia. “Further, the range of Connected Drive features is more extensive than ever, including several innovative driver assistance systems such as: Collision Warning System with braking function and Attention Assistant, which are unique among the BMW X5’s rivals.” The new BMW X5 also impresses with outstanding practicality, headlined a 40: 20: 40 split / folding rear seat backrest and load capacity rising from 650 to a maximum 1,870 litres.

“The new BMW X5 has definitely surpassed its predecessor in terms of raised performance, reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.”

Ride comfort in the new BMW X5 is also further enhanced with the introduction of a range of advanced suspension systems. The Comfort Adaptive Suspension package comprises Dynamic Damper Control and automatic self-leveling air suspension at the rear. The electronic control logic adapts the damping characteristics to changing road conditions and driving situations. Two different damping modes can be selected using the Driving Experience Control switch.

www.bmwgroup.com

The Dynamic Adaptive Suspension Package provides significantly sportier cornering dynamics. Dynamic Performance Control and the Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation optimise directional stability and reduce body roll. The BMW X5 xDrive50i comes as standard with the Professional Adaptive Suspension package, which combines the components of the Comfort and Dynamic Adaptive Suspension packages into an integrated system offering highest levels of driving enjoyment in all situations. The BMW X5 xDrive35i and X5 xDrive30d, meanwhile, come standard with the Comfort Adaptive Suspension package. Adaptive M suspension is available with the optional M Sport package, which includes Sporttuned suspension settings with a specifically-tuned Dynamic Damper Control system, as well as an automatic self-levelling air suspension at the rear.

aised on Long Island, in a suburb of New York City, Scott Weinmann was boating before he could ride a bicycle. In fact, he learned to ride a bicycle at the boat yard. Scott’s father was an avid boater, and wanted something that the whole family could enjoy together on weekends and from here, Scott’s love of the ocean and the vessels that sail across it was born.

The perfect venue for a wedding ceremony or reception, with breathtaking views of Koh Samui.

Photogr aph cour tesy of Egor-Galina Petukhov-Kovalenko

As the years went by and Scott raced sailboats in the Long Island Sound, followed by stints chartering sailboats in the Caribbean - from St. Thomas to the British Virgin Islands when he was 22, to St. Lucia and the Grenadines. Sailing everything from 40’ sloops to large catamarans. The love of the ocean never leaves you, but bills must be paid and so Scott worked hard within high-tech industries specifically working with software without ever forgetting the love of the sea and his place within it. In the spring of 1993, Scott picked up fly-fishing after seeing “A River Runs Through It”. It just looked like something regal – zen like in its simplicity. Shortly after learning the craft, Scott was a regular at the local trout stream, eventually traveling to the Florida Keys to fly-fish for Tarpon and thus the sailor was now a devout fisherman

68

One Coast Magazine

A visit to Koh Samui in 2010 changed the course of Scott’s life, where he would travel from New York City to Koh Samui, 3 times a year, for over 3 years and started to develop a plan to completely change his path, leaving enterprise software in his wake, and making a new life in Thailand and the cogs began to turn looking to create a new business, a new venture and a new path to follow…..

It was in March of 2013 on the shores of Samui that it finally hit him...there wasn’t a single “world class” fishing boat on Koh Samui. There were a handful of beautiful yachts - Minor Affair, Hip Horizons, and such, but you can’t fish from them. If you wanted to REALLY go fishing, you were stuck with the local fishing boats, which lack a lot of the creature comforts. The new business plan was hatched - bring a worldclass fishing boat to Koh Samui and cater to the 5-star resorts and their guests that appreciate the difference. The plan looked good. Now it was time to find a boat. The decision was made to stretch the budget and acquire the Intrepid 350. Re-christened “Siamese Dream”, she was trailered from Phuket to Don Sak where she was launched, then brought to Koh Samui. Today, Siamese Dream lives in Bangrak, and has become a staple in Ang Thong Marine Park, where 80% of here excursions take her. She cruises comfortable at 27-30 knots and has a top speed of 40 knots. Propelled by twin Mercury Verado 275 hp engines, she is one of the fastest boats on Samui and boasts an air conditioned cabin, a full bathroom with shower, microwave oven and refrigerator. Siamese Dream carries 160 litres of fresh water on board, along with a fuel capacity of 1,200 litres. Equipped with Furuno radar, chart plotter and fish finder, Garmin GPS, Simrad Autopilot and multiple Horizon VHF radios, she is outfitted like a yacht should be.

With a hull fabricated from Kevlar, Siamese Dream may just be the strongest and safest boat on Koh Samui. Fishing gear comes from Phuket - Penn International Rods and Reels, and Shimano TLD 2-speed reels for the big stuff. Known as Koh Samui’s finest & fastest luxury fishing boat, Siamese Dream is available for Deep Sea Fishing, Snorkeling, Ang Thong Marine Park Expeditions, Night Fishing & Scuba diving Koh Tao or you can set out for the waters around Koh Samui and Koh Phangan for Giant Trevally, Queenfish, King Mackeral, Barracuda, Cobia, Snappers, Pompano and Groupers.

SIAMESE DREAM YACHT CHARTERS With 5-star service, all cocktails and wine included, and catering from the islands finest restaurants and resorts, the experience aboard Siamese Dream is incomparable to taking a speedboat out for the day. It’s in another category entirely…the category of dreams. Siamese Dreams.

nflatable ring? Check. River? Check. Bars and Booze? Check…..you must be in Vang Vieng, Loas!

Floating peacefully down the river in an inflated inner tube seemed like the perfect idea to a farmer in the late 90’s but little did he know what had just started. Pretty soon, every guesthouse and tour operator in town was renting out tubes as a way to enjoy the Laos sunshine and take in Vang Vieng’s natural beauty. Over 170,000 backpackers now stop off in Vang Vieng each year to float down the river and participate in a crazy floating party, stopping off at bars and parties dotted along the banks in this forever changed backpacker’s paradise. Now complete with dance floors, zip-lines, rope swings, giant slides, mud volleyball courts in what you could call the ultimate outdoor water park. Put a ring on it and get tubing…..

ARE YOU BEING SERVED? THE BOYS AT SAMUI'S MOST COVETED RESTAURANT SHARE THEIR PASSION...AND BOIL SOME BEEF. words by Jade Moore photos by Johnny McGeorge facebook.com/the.imaginician

One Coast Magazine

89

COOK IT UP Put all the ingredients for the brine into a very large saucepan, pour in 2.5 litres (4½ pints) of water and gradually bring to the boil, stirring to help the sugar and salt dissolve. Once it comes to the boil, let it bubble away for two minutes. Take off the heat and leave to cool completely.

Beefcake Martin Selby doesn’t follow the herd when it comes to grazing. Known for his knack of turning simple home-cooked favourites into top-end tucker, The Larder’s Cook also loves cow puns and would be highly a-moo-sed if we added an udder one right at the end.

SALT BEEF

Otherwise known as Bully Beef or more commonly Corned Beef, this salt-cured cow meat recipe dates back to any historical time when preserving meat was a priority. To this day the technique remains a staple and with a few expert tweaks makes a delicious addition to The Larder’s already sterling menu.

Pierce the meat all over with a skewer. Put it in a large, sterilised plastic box or bucket (something non-reactive) and cover the meat with the brine; it must be totally immersed. The best thing I’ve found for weighing it down is two massive bottles of vodka. Put them in on top of the meat and it will stay below the level of the brine. Leave in a very cool place (a cellar or a room that is always freezing cold – most houses have one). Leave it for seven days. Take the beef out of the brine and rinse it. Roll and tie the meat and put it in a pan with the vegetables, bouquet garni and garlic, adding enough cold water to cover. Bring the water to simmering point, then leave to poach gently – I mean gently – for two and a half to three hours. Cook until the meat is completely tender (check with a skewer). Serve in slices with pickles, horseradish cream, English mustard or piccalilli. You can serve it hot (reheat it in the broth in which it has cooked) or cold. It will keep for a week in the refrigerator; wrap it well so it stays moist.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE BRINE

• 275g (9¾oz) soft light-brown sugar • 350g (12oz) coarse sea salt • 2 tsp black peppercorns • ½ tbsp juniper berries • 4 cloves • 4 bay leaves • 4 sprigs of thyme INGREDIENTS FOR THE BEEF

• 2.5kg (5lb 8oz) piece of beef rump • 1 large carrot, roughly chopped • 1 onion, roughly chopped • 1 celery stick, roughly chopped • 1 leek, cut into large chunks • 1 bouquet garni • ½ head of garlic

Metrolicious The Larder Koh Samui would feel at home in any major city in the world

YOU'VE BEEN SERVED PASSIONISTA

Damian Ahern's hybrid cocktail menu is as sharp as the knife in the picture and twice as shiny. The Passionista is no exception, blending sweet, sour, bitter and boozy in perfect proportions for the freshest drink you’ll have until you order the next one.

INGREDIENTS • 1oz cachaca • 1oz fresh passionfruit (with seeds) • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice • 1/2 oz simple syrup Shake and pour over crushed ice and garnish with fresh mint. Serve with a smile, drink with a wince.

No fuss. No fancy terms. No pretension. Located in Chaweng, at the very top end of Chaweng Beach Road (opposite the Anantara Lawana Hotel), The Larder takes things back to basics, serving up rustic casual dining and cocktails with a twist. Chef Martin Selby and Drink Guru Damian Ahern offer up modern British and International cuisine with a mix of comfort food and classics that have been revived, remixed and reinvigorated by merging modern cooking methods and techniques. Their fresh take on foodie-favourites sit alongside cocktails that have been deconstructed into new liquid magic such as the infamous Inside Out Bloody Mary made with ice-cubes full of secret herbs and spices and garnished with vodka-infused cherry tomatoes or the Peanut Butter Martini with Larder infused peanut butter cup vodka, milk and chocolate all served in unique and quirky ways, injecting some humour in your tipple of choice.

The food menu is a diners dream with house favourites like the Scotch Egg with asparagus for dipping into the soft gooey yolk and house-made pickle or the Pulled Pork Pleasure - rosemary-scented slow cooked pork with quince paste, adobo sauce and house-made slaw served in a fresh bun are a huge hit. With a carefully crafted menu, the food is faultless and the names are cheeky – a great combination that is hard to find in Samui and it’s great to see someone having fun with what they love to do without compromising on quality. Tongue in cheek they are, but all jokes aside everything is served with a passion and love for ingredients from start to finish……and we like to finish with the Espresso martini, served warm with a massive scoop of salted caramel ice cream...mmmmmm... www.thelardersamui.com hungry@thelardersamui.com +66 (0) 77-601-259 One Coast Magazine

This exciting fine dining experience uses Basque technique fused with Thai ingredients to create something entirely new. Be intrigued by the Bonsai tree-bearing juicy cherry tomatoes and edible bark, and then sample the exquisitely-crafted truffle egg in the heart of the Aziamendi kitchen. Signature dishes also include The Garden, Pigeon with Hazelnuts and Foie Gras Ash. The restaurant designed by A-cero is inspired by the nature surrounding it. Undulating timber waves on the ceiling symbolize the beauty of the Andaman Sea. The tropical landscape is represented through the natural tree like forms of the tables and the lush foliage is reflected in the green velvet of the chairs. t’s 9pm in the restaurant of the Banyan Tree Koh Samui. Lights are dim and the faint sound of diners is subtle enough to set the ambience in keeping with the plush interiors of one of Asia’s finest boutique luxury resorts...

As an impeccably turned out Maître d’ floats silently from table to table, a beautifully controlled, muted guitar carries a rhythmic melody across the room, swiftly followed by a silky smooth vocal rendition of a classic Motown soul song. Everyone, including the Maitre d’, is impressed. The slick precision fingers behind the guitar belong to Alex Rigley and the liquid gold vocal chords are those of Pete McDowell, two handsome and effortlessly charming London lads who, along with their residency at Banyan Tree, are causing a stir at Samui’s top venues with their unique brand of high-end musicality under the monicker of The Night Sessions. One Coast meets up with the duo to get the low-down on the rhythm and the blues behind the soul.

OC: Tell us a little bit about yourselves P: I’m 30 years old, started performing and writing music at the age of 15. I continued to study music through college and then university until 23 years old, during which time I was working on and off with Alex and doing various other projects. Mainly writing music and performing in bands and collaborating with with other musicians. A: I’m a couple of years older than Pete and started working full time when I left school at 16. We met at music college when I was 18 and I gave academic music a couple of shots but was never really suited to the classroom aspect as I’m more of an instinctive musician. So I always kept music as my hobby and passion while I worked for an honest living. For years Pete and I would jam together, share inspiration and create music. We had a successful stint in a band together in Coventry until 2008 then we went our separate ways...The following year I moved to Germany with my girlfriend and Pete moved out to Thailand to teach English. OC: How did The Night Sessions come about? P: After I’d been teaching in Thailand a few years I realised how much I’d missed making music and after chatting with Alex again for the first time in two years I convinced him to come out. In 2011 we reunited in Phuket where we started looking at performing full time. We realised there was a niche for high-end live acts in five star hospitality, and knew we had something different to offer. It was here that the Night Sessions was founded - and after six months of planning, rehearsing and general hard work, we got our first break in Koh Samui.

100

One Coast Magazine

A: As a blues guitarist, I just knew that by creating a distinct ‘sound’ along with Pete’s soulful vocals, we could build a brand of music that would stand out from the rest. Not only technically precise but fluid and creative, which is strengthened by the synergy we have on stage. Almost subliminal contact, like a line gets sung and I’ll play a counter melody to it, I’ll finish of Pete’s melodies for him and he’ll finish of my rhythms for me. It’s a rare bond that gives us the ability to craft smooth, palatable music with a really sharp edge that everyone can connect with. Our ethos is to bring style AND substance and know that consistency is key. OC: Any plans on the horizon? BOTH: One of the main reasons we got back together was to start writing new music but we got kinda waylaid by this project which, luckily has really taken off. It would be great to expand on what we’re doing, maybe bring a drummer and a bass player into the mix. But for now just keep on putting in the hours, honing our skills, perfecting the sets and see where the wind takes us. Currently Pete & Alex live on Koh Samui, where they are the house duo at Banyan Tree Samui. You can also catch them every Sunday from 11am - 1pm at Beach Republic in Lamai.

Storm in a Teacup

From healthy eating to socially conscious living, Art Cafe’s June is a force to be reckoned with

T

here’s much more than meets the eye with the lovely Sujitra Kerdsompong AKA June. A household name on Koh Samui, June is somewhat famous as the proprietor of the equally renowned and eponymous ‘Art Cafe’ in Samui Town Centre. A refuge for Samui’s health-conscious hungries, June’s Art Cafe has been operating for 17 years and carries a repution as one of the island’s most well loved organic eateries. However, beyond her predilection for keeping Samui residents and guests in good shape, June also has a burning passion for Social Responsibility and is active in many community projects along with donating to a multitude of local and international charities. Seeking the simple life after a successful career as an art director in Bangkok’s advertising world, June first turned her charitable nature to local causes in Samui such as dog rescue centres, childrens and disability charities which soon extended to regional hospitals, temples and special needs schools from Southern Suratthani to the northern province of Isaan. Her efforts even extended to international causes such as disaster relief for the Haitian earthquake and Japanese Tsunami, among others. Now every month on the full moon (Seva Day) June dedicates her charity day and makes donations ranging anywhere from 5,000 Baht to 20,000 Baht on some months - in her words to “‘share good energy and put a smile on people’s faces. We are one community who must take care of each other.”

Further to her consistent efforts, in recent years June has become increasingly concerned of what the consumer society wastes on a daily basis and started focusing more attention on raising awareness of reducing food waste and more effective waste management, particularly in a tourist driven society like Koh Samui. She was most shocked to see that tens of tonnes of wasted food were being thrown away from hotels and restaurants on Samui every day. “Most people don’t get to see how much wasted food is accumulated in a day or they think that ordering an extra plate of food will be ok as it’s relatively cheap in Thailand compared to other countries around the world - but when you consider that every one in three people throw away food at every meal in every hotel, resort or restaurant on the island every day...this results in mountains of food needlessly thrown away.” And so, as diligent as ever, June is working hard to raise awareness for sensible consumption, to value the food we consume, the amount we order, what it takes to reach our plates and with a small effort, how we can reduce the amount that could otherwise be spared to feed the more needy rather than end up festering in the trash. for delicious healthy meals, check out June’s Art Cafe w: www.juneartcafe.com e: juneartcafe@hotmail.com t: 077-425-587 One Coast Magazine

Kamalaya Impeccable design and careful landscaping bring out the magic and mystique of Samui’s hidden holistic haven. photos by Johnny McGeorge facebook.com/the.imaginician

A

s you walk in to Kamalaya, high in the mountains on the south end of the island of Koh Samui, a sense of peace and calm washes over you as you are engulfed in the stunning natural surroundings. Set on twenty three rai, Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa Resort sprawls across and down the lush tropical landscape of Samui without ever really interrupting it. With muted colours, careful architecture and design, Kamalaya allows the natural elements and formations of rocks and trees to remain whilst the complex is built around them. The owners of Kamalaya, Karina and John Stewart had a vision and they enlisted Robert Powell to see it come to fruition. Robert Powell, artist, and architect of Kamalaya ensured that existing rocks and trees became the defining elements for the design of the buildings. Rather than destroying these natural elements to make way for construction, the buildings were designed to incorporate some of these aspects as key architectural features. Care was also taken to preserve the natural environment, from the transplanting of over 150 trees removed for building, to the implementing of an eco-friendly water purification system. “When the owners of Kamalaya first showed me their land I was immediately captured by its drama, just as they had been. Kamalaya is situated on a truly extraordinary coastal landscape, climbing from a pristine reef-protected beach to a 55 meter high hilltop. A palm filled valley leads to a steep hill scattered with gigantic granite boulders, their surfaces rounded by millions of years of exposure and patterned with lichen, moss and ferns. The hillside is also forested with tropical trees and rises in a series of natural terraces to the hilltop plateau with spectacular 360 views of the sea, beach, outlying islands, and jungle hills.” says Robert. The buildings were designed to take full advantage of their individual setting; the views, the rocks, the trees, and their relationship to other buildings. The mood, the feeling, was to be quiet and peaceful, spacious and expansive, natural and very comfortable, not extravagant nor over-designed. Instead of the luxury of expensive materials and opulence there is the greater richness of space, light and unique views over a very special seascape. Existing rocks and trees become the defining elements for designs that incorporated them into the form and even the structure of the buildings. For example, the twin trunk tree in

the middle of the Wellness reception area; the rock wall with the hanging roots of the ficus tree that the day-treatment rooms and pool cluster around; the giant boulders that form the walls and the floor of villas at the top of the valley.” Kamalaya’s 59 rooms and villas are nestled amidst ancient, granite boulders, streams and tropical vegetation, with existing rocks and trees

as defining elements for many of the structures with asian textiles and carefully selected art pieces combine with modern amenities to create comfortable, serene and elegant interiors. Stay at Kamalya and not only experience the wonder of nature, but enjoy integral wellness programs that aim to access the inner healing power within each of us, and to support a harmonious integration of heart, body, mind, and spirit.

The kids were eager to dive in to the warm water, snorkel around and see the multi-coloured sea creatures and coral as well as sit on the trampoline netting at the front of the boat with the water rushing underneath them… and when they needed to rest and cool down, the 28inch television kept them entertained… which gave the parents time to relax with a glass or two of wine! The attentive crew served a delicious lunch with ice-cold drinks and a bite of something for everyone – our older guests enjoyed lunch in the comfort of the air-conditioned living area and could escape some of Samui’s sun during the hotter part of the day.

SAIL SAMUJANA A full day charter on Kindred Spirit with family and friends... Setting off early morning aboard the 43ft catamaran Kindred Spirit, the sun had only just risen over the Gulf of Thailand and we were all excited for a day out to visit the nearby islands, with Koh Phangan top of our agenda. Operated by Khun Sa-ard Panyawan, an expert sailor and Olympic windsurfer who has the ocean running through his veins, his smiling staff made sure we were more than comfortable. They kept a keen eye on the excited kids as they explored the boat. With some great music on the surround sound system and refreshing welcome drinks in hand, we set sail.

With something for everyone, our entire family, our friends and their children thoroughly enjoyed this magical experience and we will be left with memories for a lifetime. To truly experience the wonder of Koh Samui and enjoy the crystal blue waters that make the island such a magnificent holiday destination is to set sail…SAIL Samujana. Dare to Discover.
