Editor’s Note In a world driven by fashion and design, all of us are straining to achieve a luxury lifestyle that affords us the time and scope to explore what we have never seen before; and it is easy to get caught up and forget to appreciate the finer details. While we seek to own a small piece of luxury, those who create and are a part of the design process - be it a hotel, a painting, a sport, an experience...are forgotten. One Coast is here to help you remember…and for those thoughts to place a smile on your face. A smile means so much to so many and Thailand is, after all, the Land of Smiles. Not just for the Thai people, but the architecture, the incredible array of delicious food, the detail in the design, the artwork that adorns the walls and the throngs of people who walk the streets enjoying each and every one of these creations – these are the smiles, a culmination of smiles… that make Thailand what it is. Stop. Appreciate. Enjoy. Smile.

CULOTTES
Every so often a past trend finds its way back to the runway to right the wrongs of a bygone era. Culottes are one such trend. From soft and and feminine to tailored there’s a pair to suit every female - tall or petite. The right structure provides a great alternative to the beloved midi skirt.
Pared with a silk blouse and sky high pointed pump adds an air of sophistication to rival the mundane office attire. Equally head turning, pare will a statement crop or slip tank and clutch for an evening out.

One can be forgiven for assuming this tone is best suited to winter, however, it truly is trans-seasonal. Paring beautifully with white, nude, black and grey, this is one palette that will see you through the year. Not convinced, add a little Marsala to your wardrobe via a handbag, hat, lipstick or nail polish and you too will fall in love with this year's "IT" colour.

DIET

There’s no question about it, getting the six pack abs is going to be predominately a factor of eating right. If you aren’t watching the food you put in your mouth with each and every meal, success will elude you. If you were to gather a group of people in a room who have already achieve the six pack abs and ask them their number one tip for results, 90% of them would state diet. It really is that important.
•
For lunch, sweet or regular potato, brown rice and quinoa are all excellent options.
•
For your evening meal, try to get some veg – but avoid root veg and any starchy carbs.
•
Drink lots of water.
•
Avoid refined and processed foods wherever possible.
•
•
Try to eat six times a day – around every three hours.
•
With every meal, use a portion of protein as your base. Think eggs, fish, chicken, and other lean meats.
Every 10 days give yourself one cheat meal. It can be anything you want. This might seem strict, but if you’re trying to reveal your abs in just four weeks such gastronomic sacrifices are necessary.
•
•
Between meals snack on nuts, seeds, avocado, olives, or small bags of snap peas.
Consume a post-workout shakes as soon as possible after your session. Aim for around 40-50g carbs and 20-30g protein. There are many available on the market.
•
For breakfast and your second meal, make sure you get some starchy carbs – oatmeal, rye, or sprouted bread – and a piece of fruit.
Getting the 6 pack you always wanted is no longer just for those who spend their life in the gym. More and more, the every-day male has become body conscious and fitness-wise, starting to eat healthier and be more proactive about achieving and maintaining their physique. We look at some key ways and exercises to obtain that 6 pack you have always wanted – a little willpower goes a long way… as do some quick exercises…
EXERCISE Abs will not magically appear without exercise. Knowing which
to do is key – and a combination of cardio along with ab-specific exercises will get you well on your way to having a washboard stomach. Gone are the days of the simple sit-up! Complete three circuits of the six exercises below four times a week (for four weeks. On two of your non-workout days, complete 45 minutes of uphill treadmill walking (not running). Rest one day per week. Overhead bench squats With a suitably weighted bar held above your head, position yourself in front of a bench. Keeping the bar in line with the midline of the body sit back onto the bench, keeping your chest high and head up. The bar will want to move forward – as you sit back onto the bench try to move it further back. Stand and repeat. Sets 3-4 Reps 20-30 Rest 30 seconds Prone knee to opposite elbow In a push-up position, rotate your right knee underneath your body to try and touch the opposite elbow. Keep your hips down and foot off the floor throughout. Repeat with your other leg. That’s one rep Sets 3-4 Reps 10-15 Rest 30 seconds Prone knee to outside same elbow In a push-up position, lift your right knee up towards your right elbow – trying to land it on the top of the elbow. Keep your hips down and foot off the floor throughout. Repeat with your other leg. That’s one rep. Sets 3-4 Reps 10-15 Rest 30 seconds
Push-ups Do as many standard push-ups as you can. If you’re seriously flagging, drop your knees to squeeze out some box push-ups for a set of 15. Sets 3-4 Reps 15 Rest 30 seconds Swiss ball hamstring curls Lie on your back with a Swiss ball positioned underneath the heels of your straight legs. Keep your hips up off the floor, stabilise with your glutes and curl your heels to your bum. Return and repeat. Sets 3-4 Reps 10-15 Rest 30 seconds Split lunge/Overhead press Hold a dumbbell on each shoulder and set up a lunge position. Move your back knee to the floor in a forward lunge and as you reach the end of the movement press both dumbbells above your head. Sets 3-4 Reps 10-15 seconds Rest 30 seconds Uphill treadmill walking Once you’ve completed three circuits of the previous six exercises, get on the treadmill until your total session time hits 45 minutes. Set an incline for as hard a setting as you can manage and start walking. Do not run.

Already considered one of the pearls of Asia, there’s another title Thailand can proudly claim – the continents golf capital. With a rich heritage dating back nearly 100 years, the first recognised 18-hole course was approved for construction at Hua Hin by King Rama V in 1923. Today there are more than 290 golf courses nationwide, with designers including - Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer, and the architects Schmidt-Curley. Over two-thirds of all golf tourists who travel to and in Asia visit Thailand, some 750,000 each year - bringing in 10.5 billion baht to the Kingdom in 2013. After an eight year absence, this February the first PGA European Tour men’s event was played at the prestigious Black Mountain golf course, in Hua Hin. With competitive green fees cheaper than their Western counterparts, luxurious club houses and Thailand’s famed female caddy service, it’s no surprise that foreign investment is on the increase. Combine that with the Kingdom’s year round golfing climate and the rich, diverse destinations – beach resorts in the South, to the mountainous regions in the North, or the bustling cities of Bangkok and Pattaya. It is now almost impossible to be more than 90 minutes away from a championship course. If there’s one thing for sure, it’s that the grass is most certainly greener for golf in Thailand. With this in mind, One Coast Magazine donned its finest plaid and checked out some of the country’s best courses.

Amata Spring BANGKOK
BANGKOK
Amata Spring This elite members-only course is situated hallway between the capital and Pattaya and is famous for its signature 17th hole, the short par-3 floating island green which requires a rowing boat to visit. Built around two lakes it is exceptionally well presented and features rolling fairways, sizeable bunkers, and fast, undulating greens. It hosts the two richest golf events in the country each year, the Royal Trophy, and the Honda LPGA Thailand. Alpine Designed by one of the world’s most famous architects Ron M. Garl, Alpine golf course is considered the toughest course in Bangkok. Though once flatlands, this course has characteristics more akin to its Northern cousins with its abundance of vegetation, stately trees, and rolling hills. The large parkland lay-out is a course not for the faint-hearted with jungle lined fairways and water-protected holes. Alpine has previously hosted the world-class tournament Johnnie Walker Classic in 2000, where Tiger Woods famously eagled the colossal 555 yard par-5 7th on his way to winning, and 2004.

Thai Country Club Remodelled in 1996 and home to the most luxurious clubhouse in all of Asia, it hosted the Asian Honda Classic the following year with Tiger Woods setting a course record of 64. Exquisitely maintained to United States Golf Association standards, it features a great variety between holes, with numerous water hazards and elegantly designed sand bunkers. Thai Country Club was recently recognised by Forbes Travel Guide as one of ‘Asia’s 10 Most Elite Golf Courses’.
Alpine BANGKOK
Ayodha Links Formed in 2007 by some of Thailand’s wealthiest people, this golf club is one of the most exclusive in all of Asia. Membership is by invitation only so if you find yourself playing here you’ll be in the presence of the country’s most well to do crowd. Considered a real test, the course measures a fearsome 7,639 yards from its championship tees and features lightning fast greens and a variety of deep bunkers.
HUA HIN
Black Mountain The only course in Thailand named in Golf Digest’s Top 100 outside the US, Black Mountain might be the best in Asia. Opened in 2007 against the backdrop of the large black rocks set into the mountains, the layout features interconnected waterways, and undulating fairways and greens in a breathtaking natural landscape. Designed with both professionals and amateurs in mind, each hole requires careful shot placement, a measured risk and reward system, and has stunning panoramic views of the course from its clubhouse. Thai Country Club BANGKOK
Banyan Designed in 2008 by Thailand’s leading golf course architect, Pirapon Namatra, on the site of a former pineapple plantation, Banyan is considered one of the best layouts in the country. With spectacular views of the Burmese mountains on one side and ocean views the other, this is a course to be truly savoured. The signature 15th par-3 features panoramic views of the Gulf of Thailand and Singtoh Island in the distance.
PATTAYA
Siam Country Club The first privately-owned course in Thailand, Siam CC was built more than 35 years ago and redesigned by Schmidt-Curley in 2007. Hosting the annual LPGA Honda Classic since 2010, the course is impeccably maintained all year round. A daunting 7,016 yards in total, it features an abundance of fruit trees, creeks, stunning bunkers, and over 100 sand traps. Considered the premier course in the region - notable holes include the 9th, with a large golden Buddha watching carefully over the green.

Laguna PHUKET and red rock landscape is a credit to its designers, Jon Morrow, and Al Tikkanen. The highest on the island with views to match, golfers here must brave a full range of natural hazards to make it home safely. The short par-3 17th takes you from a breathtakingly precipitous ledge, down over 40 meters through the jungle to a lush green valley carved out of the bright red rock below. Laguna Re-designed and renamed in 2014, the former Banyan Tree Golf Club facelift has been impressive. The once flat fairways now roll and dip, strategic hazards have been added and more mature trees enhance the woodlands setting. Set amongst the tropical surroundings of Bang Tao Bay with pleasant breezes from the Andaman Sea, the course offers good variety and is within easy reach of some of Phuket’s luxury resorts. 46

Blue Canyon Country Club As the one and only three time host of the Johnnie Walker Classic, this venue features two award-winning championship courses (‘Canyon’ and ‘Lakes’) within its grounds. Designed in 1988 by Japan’s famed golf architect, Yoshikazu Kato on the site of another tin mine, it’s flanked by rubber plantations and features many characteristics as a nod to its past.
CHIANG MAI & CHIANG RAI
Santiburi Chiang Rai Country Club Located in the Golden Triangle, this was Chiang Rai’s first golf course, designed in 1992 by Robert Trent-Jones Jr. Exploiting the natural terrain of the northern region, this highly regarded resort features rolling hills guarded by countless sand bunkers, sloping lies, trees, and huge water hazards. course is impeccably well maintained and definitely worth a visit. Chiang Mai Highlands Opened in 2005, plaudits soon followed this Schmidt-Curley creation, and it’s now firmly in the international golf course fraternity. Designed to capture the natural beauty of the surrounding hills, its elevated position, cool climate, and fresh air inspire tranquillity as memorable as its holes. Do not be fooled though, this course demands focus and skilled shots, as the undulating fairways are unforgiving, with tight bunker complexes, and consistently fast, sloped greens. The 18th hole, a 558 yard par-5, is considered one of the greatest closing holes in Thailand and bound to ensure an exciting finish.
KOH SAMUI
KOH SAMUI
Santiburi Samui Country Club The only championship course on the island, it stretches along the hills of the northern coastline offering spectacular views of Mae Nam beach below, the Gulf of Thailand, and Koh Phangan. Set amongst the lush, natural beauty of coconut forests, waterfalls, and meandering creeks, Santiburi offers a picturesque backdrop to one of the most unique courses in Thailand. Steep mountain slopes, fast greens, and rocky outcrops, create a challenging environment for all golfers. EVOLVED BY DESIGN WITH AN EXPANSION OF THE ALREADY SUCCESSFUL KAMALAYA RETREAT ON KOH SAMUI, KEEPING WITH THE ENVIRONMENT AND MERGING PEACEFULLY INTO THE SURROUNDS IS STILL THE AWARD WINNING RESORT’S TOP PRIORITY. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
It is not often you find a residence that seamlessly merges with the environment in which it resides, the architecture pointedly created so that it is hard to know where manmade begins and mother earth ends, but Kamalaya in Koh Samui is one of those very magical places. The owners of Kamalaya, Karina and John Stewart had a vision when they first stumbled up this stunning piece of land on the south coast of Samui, and they enlisted architect and designer Robert Powell to see it come to fruition. Many moons on, some 13 years later and it is time to see in the next phase…a natural progression of Kamalaya and all it currently offers.
One Coast Magazine

Building on the neighbouring land at the top of the property, 2015 is set to see an entirely new and complimentary counterpart to Kamalaya with such incredible integration, you will not be able to tell the new from the old, almost as if Kamalaya grew organically on its own‌..sprawling across and down the lush tropical landscape of Samui without ever really interrupting it. With muted colours, careful architecture and design, Kamalaya allows the natural elements and formations of rocks and trees to remain whilst the complex is built around them. The hillside is forested with tropical trees and rises in a series of natural terraces to the hilltop plateau with spectacular 360 views of the sea, beach, outlying islands, and jungle hills and the new additions will take full advantage of their individual setting; the views, the rocks, the trees, and their relationship to other buildings. The mood and the feeling of this new design is to be quiet and peaceful, spacious and expansive, natural and very comfortable, not extravagant nor over-designed. Instead of the luxury of expensive materials and opulence there is the greater richness of space, light and unique views over a very special seascape. Existing rocks and trees become the defining elements for designs that incorporated them into the form and even the structure of the buildings.
52

The original design team of 13 years ago has been brought back together so that the seamless integration of the new and old is peaceful and harmonious with the land. A new 25 meter lap pool, a brand new fitness center with far greater capacity and state of the art equipment, new treatment rooms for the Wellness Sanctuary as well as 16 brand new Superior Suites will become part of Kamalaya, all still following the principle of respecting nature. Every effort has been made so peace and tranquillity remain for all guests, all fauna and all those close by with innovative soundproofing techniques and structures to retain the serenity. Design need not be loud, nor intrusive…sometimes design can simply be quiet. www.kamalaya.com

Streets packed full of people, smiles a mile wide, joy filling the air and water touching every surface of Thailand….Songkran is a time to celebrate, enjoy and drench passers-by with as much water as possible. Songkran or the Thai New Year, is actually the occasion of the passing of the sun from Taurus into Aries, although widely known as the Water Festival, it is a solar event and it marks the beginning of a new astrological year, and this is very important in Thailand and is celebrated with much gusto – one can only describe it as a day of wet and wild mayhem! From the 13-15th April the whole of Thailand joins together to mark this auspicious anniversary where life is celebrated via passers-by throwing water onto each other - be it via a hose, a bucket or even a water pistol! It has become a day to party (the actual Songkran day always falls of the 13th April) for foreigners and locals alike and an additional reason for many to visit Thailand to enjoy this amazing time of year.
ONE OF THAILAND’S MOST WELL KNOWN AND LOVED FESTIVALS, PEOPLE TRAVEL THE WORLD TO ENJOY THIS VIBRANT AND LIVELY WATER FILLED DAY. AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY.
The water festival has been celebrated for centuries in Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, even in Yunnan. Some 1,200 years ago, people in India began a custom that has lasted until the present day. Around March every year, people would chase one another through the streets and parks of their hometowns, playfully throwing water dyed red or orange. Many scholars believe this tradition to be the precursor to Thailand’s Songkran festival, as well as similar festivals in Burma, Laos and Cambodia and southern China, where water sprinkling - now more often water throwing - remains widely popular. In these countries, the water festival marks the beginning of the New Year based on the lunar calendar. Thailand and its Indo-Chinese neighbours share many similar traditions, Buddhist beliefs and folklore, although the details of these customs often vary.
A N R K G N O S 54

livingculture Songkran stories feature heavily in Thai folklore. One in particular tells the tale of the seven daughters of King Kabinlabhom, who were required to rotate as the Songkran Lady. Items of their clothing and jewellery were used in rites as the basis for making predictions of the well-being of the Thai nation in the year ahead. Prior to the 20th century, the Thai custom was more graceful. People would gently sprinkle small amounts of water from silver containers on parents, grandparents and other loved ones as a mark of respect. Originally, the festival lasted three days, with the first day set aside for cleaning the household, the second for religious merit making, and the third for New Year celebrations. However, the traditional order of activities seems to have disappeared almost entirely, leaving only water sprinkling - or water throwing, notable for roving pickup trucks loaded with people and water attempting to douse everyone in sight. In today’s changing society, featuring urbanisation and mass tourism, the majority of people consider Songkran merely another holiday and an opportunity for fun. In modern Thailand, Songkran has also become a festival during which extended families gather together, with special marks of respect shown to elderly relatives, including family members, friends, neighbours, and monks. During this time, people celebrating Songkran as a Buddhist festival may also go to a Wat (Buddhist monastery) to pray and give food to the monks. They may also cleanse Buddha images from household shrines as well as Buddha images at monasteries by gently pouring water mixed with a Thai fragrance over them. The family sprinkling scented water from silver bowls on a Buddha image is a ritual practiced by all Thais in on the third day of Songkran, known as Wan Payawan. This is the first official day of the New Year and on this day people cleanse where the family is dressed in traditional Thai costume and wearing leis of jasmine flower buds with the water is scented with the petals of this flower. It is believed that doing this will bring good luck and prosperity for the New Year.
Related to the water pouring is the ritual of the tying of strings, although less commonly seen these days. This involves the tying of strings around the wrists of others and expressing good wishes for the New Year. When a person ties strings to another’s wrist, it is a very important event. He or she approaches with a gentle smile and holds out the string by the two ends and then begins to tie. The person receiving the string has his or her arm outstretched with the underside of the wrist facing upward. While tying the strings, the person recites short prayers of blessing spoken directly for the individual. This is one of the most charming events of Songkran and it’s one that you should show great appreciation for should someone approach you to apply the strings to your wrist. As part of the water sprinkling, water splashing and string tying rites, you may also encounter a person with a small silver bowl filled with a white powder or pasty substance. This is one of the oldest Songkran traditions. The white paste is a sign of protection and promises to ward off evil. The person with the paste is often older and he or she applies the paste to various parts of the face, neck and torso of others. One is expected to leave this paste on until it washes off of its own accord, and while there is a tendency to shy away from this paste because it looks like it might ruin the clothes, it is water soluble and will not harm materials. With the most obvious celebration of Songkran being the throwing of water - get yourself ready for people at the side of roads with a garden hose poised to drench you from head to toe! The throwing of water on anyone that moves, people lining the streets with water pistols and buckets – is one of the most spectacular times to visit Thailand and see in the Thai New Year whilst getting some relief from the stifling summer heat! FASHIONABLY LATE
Be the coolest cat in the graveyard with the Cocoon from German coffin makers Uono. Isn’t it about time that high design was incorporated into the afterlife? Some might think it morbid, but the realm of coffin design has been in grave danger of churning out a-pall-ing generic deathbeds, without taking into consideration shifting trends or fickle folk. However, if you’re the type that has to have the best of the best and wouldn’t be seen dead in anything else, then Köln based German coffin creators Uono have crafted a series of trendy tombs to ensure your musty bones remain dead fashionable for all of eternity. The revolutionary ‘Cocoon’ - designed by Andreas Spiegel alongside various funeral masters and private research laboratories - not only has design to die for, but also boasts a high degree of user-friendliness. The beautifully crafted lozenge-shaped casket is made from a lightweight (20kg), yet sturdy soy-based resin and is lined with a naturally strong compound fashioned from the fibres of the jute plant. Quite cleverly, the coffin has been designed to naturally decompose within 10-15 years and for those who prefer to burn out rather than rot away, the cocoon can also be used for cremation as the upper heating value of the natural materials is similar to that of wood.
Attention to detail in the Cocoon is paramount and not that you’d notice, but you'll rest comfortably in the knowledge that your lifeless shell will be cosy within the plush white cotton or silk liner. Discreet, detachable handles on the clever cadaver container fit nicely into the aesthetic shape of the coffin that can also be used to tie rope around for lowering into graves. Furthermore, the cocoon features a CO2 neutral, waterbased varnish so you need not worry about the environmental effects of your carcass casing as you slowly decompose. To add a personal touch to your stylish sepulchre, the coffins are finished by hand and are available in 14 colours ranging from “red and dead” to “deathly white” and “cold blue lips”. You can even use their Haute Couture program to design the coffin in a custom colour of your choice if it helps to rest your soul. Fortunately, forward thinking fashionistas can pre-order the coffin so your loved ones won't have to lay you to rest in something less aesthetically pleasing. Heaven forbid they put you in beech – or worse black ash. Believe it or not, Uono give discount for bulk orders so if it’s your fancy for fashionable funerals, then you and your whole family can go out in style at a nice price. The costly corpse capsule will set you (or your dearly departed) back US$3,500 which goes to show that as the best things in life may be free, it would seem that the best things in death are actually quite expensive. www.uono.com

4C LEGACY
Adding to the Alfa Romeo brand’s legendary racing history and the exciting experience of open-air motoring, the all-new 2015 4C Spider debuts in true seductive Italian style; with state-of-the-art Formula 1 inspired carbon fiber monocoque chassis for an incredible powerto-weight ratio; holding the all-aluminum 1750 cc turbocharged engine with direct-injection and variable-valve timing for supercarlevel performance. Like the award-winning 4C Coupe, the all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider model’s designation is a return to “the great Alfa Romeos” and continues this tradition to represent the very core of Alfa Romeo’s DNA and heritage. The 4C Spider draws from a bloodline that includes some of the most purpose-built performance models illustrating lightness and efficiency with undeniable Alfa Romeo style: the aluminum-bodied 8C 2900 B Touring (1938); the 1900 C52 “Flying Saucer” (1952), which could exceed 140 mph (230 kph); and most notably the legendary 33 Stradale (1967) with its mid-engine and magnesium alloy and steel tube chassis “clothed” by groundbreaking styling, which is functional and distinctly Italian. And now it is the 4C Spider’s turn to deliver the driving thrill, performance and unforgettable emotion that only an Alfa Romeo Spider provokes.

SEDUCTIVE ITALIAN STYLE
Inspired by the 33 Stradale, the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider transcends this legendary racecar’s mid-engine body forms and follows its purposeful and lightweight performance tradition with sheet-molded compound (SMC) composite panels forming its seductive Italian design. Covering the “beating heart” of this Italian supercar is a deck-lid with three functional heat extractors and an aerodynamically tuned spoiler. And it’s from the 4C Spider’s “beating heart” where every other design element starts: two muscular forms straddle the rear hood and elevate the body above the cockpit’s beltline for visual strength and foundation for the carbon fiber “halo.” The rear fascia blends into the muscular rear wings, incorporating large functional air intakes, while dual exhausts highlight the 4C Spider’s supercar stance. Leading from the 4C Spider’s windshield and down the hood are two muscular hood forms, which naturally conclude at the signature Alfa Romeo shield-shaped grille and emblem. Together with the two side air intakes designed in the front fascia, the 4C Spider forms the famous “Trilobo,” a significant facet of Alfa Romeo’s distinctive design.
HAND-CRAFTED EXCELLENCE
The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider combines the racing and performance know-how of Alfa Romeo engineering with the craftsmanship and manufacturing expertise of Maserati. Integration of the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile and the Maserati Modena workshop bring together a brand with a century of history that continues to be one of the most famous and popular ambassadors of Italian products around the world. www.alfaromeo.com

With a perception shift in environmental conservation over recent decades, it is no wonder that finding eco-friendly solutions to daily life has been at the forefront of the retail industry. Less pollution, greater efficiency, a smaller footprint on the earth – these are the things we as a global society are now gearing our lives towards. A relative newcomer, developments in the electric motorcycle industry are growing exponentially and it seems this is merely the beginning of what industry experts expect to be the most rapidly growing segment of the motorcycle industry. For environmentally conscious individuals, the most important benefit of choosing electric-power is the positive impact on the environment. Unlike gas-guzzling vehicles, electric bicycles

don’t burn fossil fuels and release no harmful carbon emissions. Although power plants indirectly produce CO2 to charge the battery, its impact is miniscule compared to automobiles. Not only does lowering CO2 emissions reduce pollution and improve air quality, but it might also limit the effects of global warming. Zero Motorcycles are the next step in motorcycle evolution. By combining the best of a traditional motorcycle with today’s most advanced technology, Zero produces high performance electric motorcycles that are lightweight, efficient, fast off the line and fun to ride. Each motorcycle is optimized from the ground up to leverage the revolutionary Z-Force™ electric powertrain and uses a specially designed rigid, aircraft-grade aluminum frame to minimize weight. With nearly the same weight and volume as competitive brushless motors used in similar applications, the revolutionary Z-Force motor produces up to 130% more power and 150% more torque. Even more impressive, the compact brushless motor requires no liquid or forced-air cooling. By placing the heat-producing elements towards the outside, where the heat radiates away via aluminum cooling fins, the motor is completely sealed and requires no routine maintenance.
When combined with a Z-Force power pack, the motor delivers incredible horsepower and breathtaking acceleration. Providing a unique ride quality, the motor produces 100% torque from a standstill for instantaneous throttle response and incredible off-the-line performance. While sophisticated, the Z-Force motor is designed to make the ownership experience simple and exhilarating. All extra parts, maintenance concerns and weight have been eliminated to help riders focus on the best part of owning a motorcycle – the ride. WHY GO ELECTRIC? More than 50 studies and analyses conclude: • fewer emissions from plug-in vehicles • Plug-ins would provide carbon emissions reductions in 49 U.S. states, including some coal heavy dependent • For a car – about a 70% reduction in emissions For a motorcycle – over 90% reduction in emissions • As electrical grid gets cleaner - plug-ins get cleaner • Plug-in cars move emissions away from population centres • Output from a few thousand power plants is easier to control than 200 million vehicle tailpipes One Coast Magazine

In an ever changing world, one thing remains the same - the desire for beauty. Chasing beauty has taken us to dark and gruesome places, harming animals in the most cruel and reprehensible ways to get what we want. Unreal Fur have taken the lead in making a change. A beautiful change. With one ethos and one only animals are not ours to wear. The Jet Ski
Jet Skiing is an adrenaline fuelled activity and you thrill seekers out there will just love this high-powered water-sport. Jet-skiing can be a great way to kill some hours and although quite expensive to buy one of these beauties, you can hire them out fairly cheaply at a lot of resorts and beachside purveyors, so now is your chance to experience some high speed thrills! One of the great things about jest-skiing is that it can be done by pretty much anyone without much training at all which is great because you can just hire one, get your life jacket on and start-up the engine. If you like traveling fast and you’re not afraid to get wet then definitely have a go at this one.
The Sea Bob
Described as a luxury ‘sea toy’ built to cruise over water at speeds of up 20 km per hour, or underwater at 14 km per hour. Everybody can do it, it’s that easy ……and you will not believe how much fun you will have!. Grab a hold of the handles, pop on your scuba mask and start your engine…..off you go. Great for those who want a bit more control than a jet-ski, less speed and more exploration closer to and in the water.

The Kite Surf
Kite Surfing is another relatively new sport in which you use a surf board and a kite and basically sail yourself using the power of the wind. Think of it as Windsurfing but without the huge flailing sail in front of you. The kites that are used are not your garden variety stunt kite either and are similar in size to those used in paragliding so they can take a large amount of wind within them. This is another sport that you will probably need a few lessons on, because you need to understand how to use the kite to pull you in your favoured direction whilst staying on the board. Takes some skill and practice but certainly fun.
The Scuba
If you like the idea of water-sports but you’re not really much of a petrol-head then this is a great option for you. Scuba diving is one of the most awe-inspiring things you can do under water, there’s nothing else like it, I mean really were not supposed to be able to go under-water were just not built for that purpose; but going under and visiting a shipwreck or diving with sharks is just incredible. Can you imagine how wonderful and vibrant the colors are down in the deep blue? It really is like going to another planet. Be warned though, you will need some training because it can be a dangerous sport if you do not know the correct procedures, but don’t worry there are plenty of courses available from many reputable and qualified centers.
The Jet Pack
One of the hottest new water sports to hit the scene in recent years, the Jet Pack is one of the closest feelings you will get to flying over water! The sensation of flying through the air is hard to surpass – but these can be tricky to get the hang of, getting your balance and motorskills in line is not easy. You will get a quick lesson in how to use it and get up in the air, or other vendors have their own controls, helping guide you and will have you fly up, up and away with ease! One Coast Magazine

TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN KOH SAMUI’S LONG-STANDING FAVOURITE BARRACUDA RESTAURANT RAISES THE STAKES WITH A BRAND NEW VENUE AT THE WHARF, BOPHUT
words & photos by Johnny McGeorge

Since 2010, one little shophouse tucked away in a quiet corner on the northern shore of Koh Samui has been harbouring a restaurant at the top of its game. An eatery with only 18 seats, over the years, the original Barracuda had become synonymous as one of, if not ‘the best’ restaurant on the island - consistently delivering to perfection its carefully crafted menu whilst enjoying wellearned prolonged periods at the number one spot on Trip Advisor. For 31 year old German owner Ferdinand Dienst, the success of his little gem was a winning concoction of passion and dedication, a brilliant business model, a dash of German efficiency, the notion of casual exclusivity and impeccable taste. All of this plus Ferdinand’s effortlessly affable charm had rooted Barracuda very firmly among Samui’s top choices. With such a small space, Barracuda operated on a dinner only, two-sittings per evening - by reservation only model. This meant that demand was high and only the quick got fed By offering an equally small menu, the restaurant became the perfect example of a ‘less is more’ concept. Four years on, however, Ferdinand set his sights on expanding the Barracuda brand to a larger space, yet making sure every crucial aspect of his original concept remain uncompromised. And so in December 2014, Barracuda reopened its brand new doors at The Wharf, Bophut.

One Coast Magazine
Moving from the tiny Maenam venue to The Wharf was a bold move, but proving that a winning concept and attention to detail can go a very long way. Increasing from 18 seats to 40 in a beautiful open-planned space decked with soft tan leather, unfinished concrete, and raw wood textures creating an ambiance to die for, Ferdinand’s personal input in designing the earthy interiors is a testament to not only a visionary restaurateur, but also a brilliant businessman who understands that it is the little details that essentially become the big things that matter. Coupled with Barracuda’s subtly updated menu, offering classics such as Norwegian Salmon on roasted eggplant or the unmistakable sesame-crusted yellow fin tuna on roasted pineapple with asparagus and wasabi - or filet mignon with black truffle purée for the meat-eaters, Ferdinand’s keen eye and innovation in the kitchen has taken the concept to its logical conclusion and placed the all new Barracuda at the very top of Samui’s food chain. www.barracuda-restaurant.com

ONE COAST Table Tales Tucked away in the quiet corner of Cr ystal Bay, arguably Koh Samui’s most beautiful beach is ROCK SALT, a brand new eatery that fuses grass roots sustainability with accessible artisan grub. Chef and owner DAVID LLOYD brings us the first of his Table Tales.
BRING IT BACK HOME At ROCK SALT, we believe in keeping things local, by sourcing all of our ingredients from small family businesses who take pride in their produce. 80% of our meat is sourced from an organic farm in Thailand, by a French farmer who raises just a few hundred livestock at a time. We don’t just order 20kg of tenderloin. The farmer will not allow it. We order as much of the animal as we can. This makes the menu more interesting, using the brisket for our Salt beef, the Flank for our steak sandwich, the Ribeye for our ‘steak and chips’, the bones for our stocks, the fillet for our carpaccio, the cheek for our Massaman and the tail to braise and serve with our Orchietta Pasta. We make absolutely everything in house.
The vegetables are as varied and fresh as any kitchen in France or England with Celeriac and Beetroot , Squash and Kale, Heritage tomatoes and even stone fruit. Except they are produced by the Kings Project here in Thailand. A charity set up by the king to conver t the Poppy farmers land from producing heroin to prize vegetables whilst protecting the livelihood of the farmers. This is the kind of energy we are putting in behind the scenes and whether people know that or not is not our concern, its that we know we are producing food thoughtfully and taking our position as consumers and producers with responsibility. The proof of that is on the plate.
Our organic free range eggs are hatched on the purest land in the country by hens on a 100% organic diet. You can tell from the finished dishes that the ingredients used are as good as you get. We then cook everything with precision techniques so as to never risk spoiling that product which we searched so hard to find and ensure was raised in the best conditions. One Coast Magazine

Ingredients: • • • • • • • •
10 Eggs Milk Vanilla Sugar Dragon Fruit Passion Fruit Jack Fruit Lime leaves
FRUIT
Clean, cut and chop all fruits and place in bowls ready for use. Except the dragon fruit. Slice the top off 2 centimeters from the widest circumference of the middle of the fruit and scoop out almost all of the fruit except for a couple of centimeters from the base. Slice the very end of the base off so it can stand up on the plate unaided. Put the scooped out fruit into a bowl ready to make the granita.
Lime leaf Sugar sy rup: Used for Granita, Ice Cream, Caramel Cage.
Boil 500 g sugar and 200g water until it becomes a clear syrup. Add fresh lime leaves at the end for aroma. Add 100g of this this syrup to the jackfruit before churning into ice cream Add 150g to the passionfruit pulp to create the puree. Add 150g to the chopped dragon fruit before freezing to make the Dragon fruit granita. Reduce the rest of the lime leaf syrup until it turns golden (use a good heavy bottomed saucepan and preferably an induction stove at a low level temperature). Then using a semi sphere mould or a ladle wrapped in greaseproof paper on a silipat mat, drizzle hot caramel with the tip of a spoon, backwards and forwards over the mould until a flying saucer is created. Let it cool and remove from the mould. Coating the mould in greaseproof paper should make this easier.
Eggs:
Separate the Egg yolks and whites. Whisk a silky meringue with the whites and 3 tablespoons of the sugar.
Trained in London’s May fair and Soho serving time at several michelin starred restaurant kitchens, DAVID LLOYD also spent a lot of time working in some of the capitals best cocktail bars. Later on he started Guerrilla Gourmet to par tner up with B ar Gurus Sweet & Chilli, catering par ties for the likes of t he J ag gers , Damien Hirst , M ark Ronson and Kate Moss among others. David then ran catering for the A&R at Universal Records and cooking whatever he could dream up on a daily basis for all the recording artists at several London recording studios, personally taking care of ever yone from Ceelo Green, Adele and the Arctic Monkeys to Tom Jones, Neil Young and Paul Mcar tney. As an accomplished musician, David fit right in and even ended up featuring on a track on a Kaiser Chiefs album which still pays out royalties every year. Now 2 years into life in Koh Samui, David started out with a bang on the island and pushed Rock Pool restaurant at the 5* Karma resort to its peak in 2013 before opening Neo for KC Beach Club. As owner of Rock Salt at Crystal bay, he has created his ultimate kitchen, designing ever y element from the layout of the sprawling kitchen, to the old vintage look chairs in the interior restaurant.
Make a sabayon by whisking the yolks and 2 spoons of sugar. Heat the Milk with the Vanilla to a simmer and poach quenelles (spoonfuls) of the meringue in the milk for about 7 minutes flipping until cooked through. Remove the poached meringues and store in the fridge on greaseproof paper. Pour the hot vanilla milk from the meringue bath over the egg yolk sabayon and continue whisking. Pour into a thermomix and cook on level 5 at 80 degrees C for 7 minutes. Or traditionally prepare a creme anglais in a saucepan on a low heat , stirring until the mixture coats a spoon. Separate the prepared custard into 2 batches and add passion fruit puree to one half and chill in the fridge. Add jackfruit to the other half of the custard, freeze and churn in a pacojet or blend and churn in a traditional ice cream machine.
Pl ating:
Scrape the dragon fruit granita and place in the first layer at the bottom of the shell of the dragon fruit. Then add the poached meringue. Pour in the passionfruit custard, top the floating meringue with a small quenelle of the jackfruit ice cream. Top with the caramel cage and serve immediately. Instruct your guest to tap the cage with the back of their spoon to break into the desser t and shatter the caramel creating crunchy shards of sweetness.

Khun Top Pipat, previously known for his foray into the movie world is now leading the charge in the Eco industry, with his latest venture ECO SHOP proving you can help change the world, one product at a time. You’ve gone from movie star to eco-ambassador what was the inspiration behind the Eco Store? It started when I graduated from Product Design and I had a dream to open a store that sells unique products to the market. When I had almost graduated, I was asked by someone to feature in a film. I thought that I had a chance to do something fun, so I figured why not and gave it a try! While I was working as an actor, my dream of product design was still lingering and so I decided to complete an MBA and I was working on my thesis, during this time I had the chance to watch the film An Inconvenient Truth. I couldn’t believe what they were saying about the environment in the movie, could it be true? So I did some research and discovered unfortunately the movie was right. I looked closer at consumer trends towards eco-friendly furniture as a designer of NSTDA under the Ministry of Science and Technology. I saw an untapped niche market as Thailand had no eco-focus brands in spite of having hundreds of eco-friendly products constantly emerging in the market. And so in 2009, the ECOSHOP concept was born. Your endless product range constantly evolving – what are your 3 must have items are from the Eco Store? It’s hard to pick only 3 but if I had to…I’d choose the Eco Friendly Book. Made by Brand O it has received many awards. 1st prize BEST ECO AWARD: ECO + INNOVATION 2013 Department of International Trade Promotion, Ministry of Commerce. Design Excellence Award (Denmark) for 2013 from the Ministry of Commerce and Good Design Award 2013 (Gmark) from the Japan Institution of Design Promotion.
Secondly I would choose The Rear Reflector (Reflector for bicycles) from Brand O which again won the Design Excellence Award (Denmark) for 2013 from the Ministry of Commerce. And lastly our Hemp Bag – made from 100% organic fibers, natural, soft and durable. As a thriving business, you need to keep your range fresh and new – where do you source most of your products from? Most of the products we sell are from Thai designers manufacturers. In 2012 I started a group called ECO DESIGN THAI THAI; a network of creatives sharing knowledge and helping each other with marketing and public relations. As a result, the ECOSHOP has a strong focus on locally crafted products. With a rising awareness in environmental conservation, what do you think are the best and most simple ways people can start giving back, as you have?. It’s the little things that count, so awareness is key. It’s like recycling, or switching off the lights. Most people think they can’t make a difference alone, but if every individual realised that their small efforts made collectively, will have a great impact. Any new and exciting things for you and the ECO STORE in 2015 that One Coast readers should watch out for? We are growing a community of people who care about the environment. Making a difference is not changing ourselves, more a matter of adjusting perception and actions for the betterment of our own personal environments. We are very excited about quite a few things we have planned for 2015…We are seeing a lot of cutting edge eco-design and manufacturing innovation emerging so it should be a productive year. We will run the ECO MARKET family later in the year, which is a collection of activities that produce eco-friendly goods and are great for the community. The whole family can join this event! The real highlight of this early year is our ECOLIFE Application. A mobile phone app that helps people adjust their behaviour to be more environmentally aware through a journey/challenge from the app. It will allow people to turn to walk, spin or drive up to 80 km / h. The app calculates a distance equal to the carbon reduction and an incentive to accumulate ‘ecopoints’ to redeem benefits via our shop which will be launching in March 2015 and available from our Kid Kid site.

HIT GIRL
AN INCREDIBLE VOICE, A PERSONALITY TO MATCH AND A FUTURE THAT SHINES BRIGHT, JADE MOORE CATCHES UP WITH ZOË BADWI, SINGER, SONGWRITER AND ALL ROUND CREATIVE SPARK. You started your singing career at a fairly young age, tell us a bit about your journey from youngster to one of the new emerging female pop stars. Well my Mum says I sang before I spoke. I knew I always wanted to be a singer I just wasn’t sure how to make my dreams come true. I did all the school musicals and would sing all the time. Then after school I became friends with a DJ/Producer called Mark John - he was looking for a singer to sing one of his songs and asked me. That was my first time in a studio and I was hooked! I then auditioned and joined an Australian girl band called “Sirens”. We had a few hits and a great time travelling around performing. When that band came to an end I joined back up with Dj Mark John and a band he was in called “Blackdogs”. I loved being in the band. At one of our gigs a record company owner came up to me and said I like what you do, no pressure but I’ll send you a song for you to write on and we can take it from there. I wrote my first song called “Release me” and it went to number 1 on the Aria club charts for 2 months and was signed in 28 countries. And that’s how it all began So far in your solo career you have had a number of successful hits, what are your favourites you love to belt out at a gig? Oh that’s a good question - I do love to sing “Release Me” the bass and beat gets the crowd up on their feet and hands in the air. I also love singing “Freefallin” because it such a feel good song. Plus I love Rihannas songs so I always try and put a cover of hers in there somewhere
You write a lot of your own songs, where do you get your inspiration from? Life! And my friends lives. Sometimes I don’t even know the song I’m writing is about me until a couple of weeks or months later and then I see. It’s great therapy songwriting and singing with emotion. It gets a lot of worries out. Sometimes my friends ask me if a particular song is about them and most times I will tell them...but they can usually tell. I also get inspiration from movies and conversations. In my opinion a well written song is a good conversation. You collaborate with various other artists, namely DJs- what’s the best thing about working with others on creating new sounds? 2 heads are better than one they say and I agree (so long as the chemistry is right). It’s great to feed off other people’s energy and I guess getting a nod for an idea I’m having, really helps push me further. Plus, when co-writing, it is exciting to share the journey. If you could have dinner with 4 famous people, living and dead, who would they be and why? Ricky Gervais is number 1!! Because I think he is hilarious. He has such a dry sense of humour and from what I see loves life. Rihanna - I want to find out all her gossip and look in her wardrobe. Whitney Houston - I would ask her so many questions. Michael Jackson - He is the king! I would pick his brain and find out where he got his inspiration from. What does 2015 hold for Zoë Badwi? I have just released a collaboration with Norden called “Bloom” which is doing well. I am also currently in the studio writing and recording. I have lots of new and different sounds I am working on plus more touring all over the world!

EXTREME TOURISM 5 Holidays you might never come back from words by Jeremy Briggs
CONSIDER YOURSELF AN ADRENALIN JUNKIE?
Do your holidays normally involve at least of one the following; rock climbing, base jumping, spelunking, heliboarding in the Rockies, climbing Mount Everest or Skydiving over Victoria falls? Do you think you’re extreme because your bucket list includes swimming with sharks and storm catching? Well think again. If you thought death was the only adventure you had left then you have a few more items to tick off first – we’ve put together the five most hardcore holidays out there that would send even the most fearless adventurers running back to mummy for a bedtime story and hot water bottle…
5. VISIT THE CANNIBAL TRIBES OF NEW GUINEA Off the North Coast of Australia and to the East of Indonesia lies Papua New Guinea, the second largest island in the world with a staggering cultural diversity. The country has listed 848 languages to its name and is famous for its unexplored jungles and myriad tribes adhering to their ancient traditions. For the Korowai tribe in particular, one of their long-standing traditions is to sometimes dabble in a gentle spot of headhunting and occasionally eat human flesh. Members of the Korowai tribe refer to outsiders as laleo - meaning ghost-demons - and if this doesn’t set off warning signals then carry on regardless. Somewhat isolated from ‘civilisation’, tribes can be reached by several days hard trekking through dense rainforest followed by a lengthy canoe journey down the ever snaking Ndeiram Kabur River. The river itself can be treacherous, as Michael Rockefeller, a fourth generation member of the Rockefeller banking family discovered in 1961... 100
One Coast Magazine
Although the details are vague, Rockefeller’s grisly demise is largely accounted to being eaten by mysterious ‘natives’ during a failed expedition on the river. While many tribes still practice cannibalism, the phenomena is not merely an act of primitive savagery as one may think, rather a deeply spiritual ritual based on the belief of reincarnating souls within their own tribe or the element of revenge in enemies. So we suggest being very polite when you arrive. Good Luck! Do: Grain feed yourself and workout before the trip – danger is unlikely to be forthcoming if you don’t look deliciously appetising. Don’t: Worry about the leeches – these are also considered a delicacy and the natives will be grateful for the garnish.

4. THE PIRATE CRUISE
Somalia has long been famous for its hazardous waterways and proliferation of pirates, making it a most unpopular destination with those in the cruise business. That is, at least, for most cruise companies! Recently a company named Somali Cruises - whose tagline is ‘Most cruises offer a mini bar – we offer a mounted Mini-Gun’ offered packages to sail you through Somalian waters atop an audacious luxury liner toting heavy artillery, hunting down any unsuspecting pirates en route. A ‘Pirate Safari’ costs just $800 per day and includes free use of an AK-47. Unfortunately (or perhaps not) the Somali Cruises tour company turned out to be a hoax and the promising testimonials of “I bagged three pirates and my 12yr old son sank two rowboats with the minigun.” floated back into the depths of make believe. Check it anyway here: www.somalicruises.com Thrill seekers need not despair though. Richard Phillips, the inspiration for the Tom Hanks movie ”Captain Phillips” - who was genuinely held hostage by Somalian pirates in their heyday of 2009 said “The Horn of Africa is slowing down because the cop is on the beat there, but Indonesia is a target-rich environment, with lots of vessels. And there’s definitely cooperation from onshore that helps these pirates who are out there.”
The waters around Indonesia and Malaysia have by the far the highest incident of pirate hijackings in the World - and taking any form of luxury vessel through these waters unarmed is floating with danger. Anyone wanting to face a modern day Black Pearl should patrol the Malaysian shipping lanes slowly, ideally with a cargo ship. But if that’s a bit out of your budget, a yacht should do it. To maximise your trip, make sure to keep your arsenal (should you feel one necessary) hidden and leave as many lights on at night as possible whilst blasting out music towards the shore to ensure you don’t go unnoticed by any lurking cutlass wielding rapscallions. Do: Be sure to allow the pirates to attack first so you can claim self defence later in court. Don’t: Hang around in a kayak somewhere off the coast of Malaysia expecting to see the Jolly Roger – these boys are looking to bag bigger catches than a couple of iPhones and a maxed out credit card.

3. WAR ZONE TOURS
If you enjoy high-risk team activities and consider the steady rhythm of artillery fire music to your ears, then this is the holiday for you! Various companies will happily ship you out to active war zones for a taste of some real-time, wartime action. All with a high chance of discovering how shrapnel really feels - in the flesh. Before even being considered for active duty, US Marines undergo a 12 week boot camp which is generally accepted as one of the most gruelling mental and physical challenges most soldiers would ever endure. Luckily plenty of tour operators will, for a variable premium, take you straight from your armchair directly into the middle of a killing field. U.N. Envoy optional.
One company in the Ukraine will take you out for as little as $75 but if you want guaranteed ‘action’ it’ll cost you something nearer $550. You receive no training but you do get a flak jacket and a hard hat, so there’s really nothing to worry about – is there? Do: Your homework - skirmishes are fast-paced and rather dangerous in War Zones and unless you intentionally booked a one-way ticket, you’ll need a pretty solid exit strategy. Don’t: Wear your flak jacket if you’re confident you can dodge bullets.
British Naval officer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (in)famously set off one chilly morn in 1912 with the intention of being the first man to reach the South Pole. Although he did complete the journey, he arrived a month too late, with Norwegian pioneer Roald Amundsen having beat him to it. However, Scott’s disappointment of losing to Amundsen was short lived as the Brit and his entire expedition unfortunately perished on the way back. As no consolation to Scott’s tragic humiliation, the Norwegians, however, made it home in one piece!
2. THE SCOTT EXPEDITION
With a climate considered ‘challenging’ to the average tourist, Antarctica is certainly up there among the most hostile places on Earth. Temperatures in this desolate ice desert routinely shoot below -60 degrees Celsius (-100 F) as 100kmh winds whip across the tundra. Exposure to these conditions can freeze your blood in little more than an hour, and as such this sparse, almost alien landscape has claimed thousands of lives, a list you too can proudly be a part of.
If you can find a fearless guide with little or no respect for life and all that’s good about it, you too can attempt to recreate Scott’s expedition and extreme test of endurance to earn some pretty solid bragging rights among your workmates. If this isn’t cutting it for you then why not up the stakes, two British adventurers Ben Saunders and Tarka L’Herpiniere recently completed the 105 day 1,800 km expedition without the aid of dogs, taking on the whole journey unsupported whilst travelling only on foot and dragging 400 pound sledges behind them… Sir Ranulph Fiennes tried and failed to do this more than once and lost several digits to frostbite in the process. Don’t let this put you off though – most people have 20 fingers and toes in all so we can generally spare a few. Do: Bring provisions – Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Mike Stroud said they burned through 10,000 calories per day during their expedition and despite the plethora of high energy foods, their bodies were still in starvation mode. Don’t: Book a return flight.

The descent itself is over 1200 feet which equates to a drop about as deep as the Empire State Building is tall. “Getting to [Marum] was kind of like a reverse climbing of Everest,” Kourounis said. “The volcano fought back at us, and we had to deal with terrible weather, tremendous heat from the lava, descending and ascending 400 meters of near vertical, loose rock face and acid rain so strong that it could have come from a car battery.” Other craziness involved lava burning holes through his protective clothing as he stood on the edge of the lake while his camera melted. Without protective clothing in those conditions the average human could expect to survive for mere seconds. Apparently it was “a bit scary. If something were to have gone wrong. It would’ve happened quickly, and catastrophically.”
1. VOLCANO DIVING
Cossman counters that the fear was “eclipsed by a surplus of adrenaline when dangling above the nearly unimaginable, sight of a glowing fiery pit likened only to the surface of the sun at close range.”
Noel Coward once sang that only ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’ but if you really want to feel the heat you can’t beat a perilous It’s been 60 years since the volcano here actually erupted but if you can sucdescent into the crater of an active volcano. cessfully navigate your way to the lava lakes edge then be ready to face a formidable foe that could happily turn mortal men into mere puffs of smoke. The Marum crater on the small and beautiful island of Vanuatu is home to a constantly bubbling lava lake, one of the most inaccessible live volcanoes Do: Throw the Ring of Power in in the world. Extreme explorer George Kourounis and his companion Sam Cossman dived down to the lava lake itself and stood on the edge of what Don’t: Bother packing shades Kourounis called a “dramatic and violent… Window To Hell.” One Coast Magazine

Based on the twelve animal signs on the lunar calendar, the Chinese Zodiac brings us our star signs in beast form... With Thailand steeped in Chinese tradition, each issue we will look at the Chinese Zodiac and find out what advantages and disadvantages there are to being a Snake, a Dragon or even the unloved Rat! This issue we take a good look at The Goat (otherwise known as Sheep in Chinese Astrology) as 2015 is their year. THE GOAT A proud and bossy animal, people born in the Year of Goat are elegant and highly accomplished in the arts. They seem to be, at first glance, better off than those born in the other years of the zodiac. Often shy, pessimistic, and puzzled about life you will find many Goats are deeply religious. Sometimes clumsy in speech, they are always passionate about what they do and what they believe in leading them to never having to worry about having the best in life for their abilities make money for them, and they are able to enjoy the creature comforts that they like.
THE YEAR OF THE GOAT Goat people are wise, gentle, and compassionate except for the knack of always getting off on the wrong foot with people, the Goat can be charming company. The good Samaritans of the Chinese zodiac, their mild mannered and gentle side means others are drawn to them and they often fall for any sob story due to their sincerity and understanding of others' faults, and are always quick to forgive. Good fortune smiles upon the goats. They benefit from wills and inheritances (whoo hoo!) Even in the roughest of times, the Goat will always find a way to acquire the basic of needs and without force or violence as is their tender nature although their passive endurance can drive you mad. Goats never come right out and discuss what's bothering them – you must pry it out of them bit by bit. When all else fails, yell at them, and bang things around! They should be impressed by your demanding screams and might unfold all their secret woes; then, you can clear the air. Romance is a part of the Goat's being. Moonlight and roses, soft music and candlelight will get them every time. They tend to view the world through rose-colored glasses although it is said that ugly things depressed Goats, so not so rose coloured all the time. Appreciation of their talents make Goats glow, and with a little encouragement, they can go far in life.
