It’s a beautiful day outside, bright blue sky and one of those wonderfully cooling breezes that are just enough to keep the heat away. We are a stone’s throw from going to print with our One Coast Magazine, March April 2017 edition. It’s a calming warm feeling too after the last few weeks as our magazine takes shape and soon will be a striking hard copy, especially with our new cover in so many people s hands. All our team have been working hard as with each issue and although it is work and a business, it all lays close to our hearts. Maya Angelou said, “pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.”. Well we hope that reflects on our magazine and that you all can’t take your eyes off One Coast. We’ve certainly crammed in some fascinating articles this edition. The cover is the first that will impress and it is just an incredibly stunning photo from the Lebanese designer Blanka Matragi. Inside we have a stimulating article about taking an adventure ride around Thailand and an interesting look at the amazing Dubai Opera house that can change its interior design to match events plus the health benefits of Yoga Fly. Plus plus plus could go on for ages but now its time for you all to read further and we hope you have as much enjoyment reading as we did putting this magazine together.

Shady Zeineldine’s collection is a tribute to the old splendor of Beirut… Beirut has always been the bedrock of fashion in the Middle East. And no one can dispute this legacy as its influence on the mood of global fashion continues to reign indelibly in spectacular forms. This time, the one who has been making his country proud for quite some time by designing enticing couture dresses that celebs like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Hillary Duff, Cindy Crawford and many more can’t take their eyes off is a Lebanese couturier Shady Zeineldine, currently based in Kuwait. “Designing haute couture for me is nothing but creating spirals of incredible art. And like all forms of art, it has a story and an aura that draws one’s attention,” he says. He finds the experience of living in Beirut quite riveting. It has always been the capital of fashion in the Middle East even through war and political turmoil. It will always be a city of culture, fashion and art. “You can't find that liveliness anywhere else. I don’t know where you can experience that even when circumstances are dismal,” he says. It’s no surprise that Zeineldine’s latest collection titled “A Beryth” is inspired by the old Beirut. “I wanted to dedicate the collection to the glory of old Beirut encapsulated in sheer style,” he says. “I find inspiration out of everything around me, from nature to people.” Contact information Ashrafieh Lebanon +961 3 075 557 +961 70 851 771 +961 01 326 771 info@shadyzeineldine.com www.shadyzeineldine.com O N E CO A S T

LA PRAIRIE LAUNCHES LINE INTERCEPTIONPOWER DUO

body&mindhot stuff THREE TYPES OF WRINKLES, ONE LINELESS FUTURE Discover La Prairie’s latest innovation towards a lineless future. It’s a total intervention to fight all types of wrinkles in just fourteen days and fourteen nights. It’s a 24-hour beauty experience as an alternative to professional procedures. This newest creation by La Prairie targets wrinkles at their inception and helps to smooth them where they have already appeared. In just two weeks, a marked difference. When it comes to fighting wrinkles, each day counts without a doubt. And each night. The scientists working for them have identified three types of wrinkles to fight for one lineless future. La Prairie’s Line Interception Power Duo combines the actions of all targeted professional procedures against wrinkles. All wrinkles from expression lines to UV induced wrinkles and aging& gravity related creases & folds 2 FORMULAS TO DRAW THE LINE DURING THE DAY Expression lines are formed as life is lived: crow’s feet, worry lines, eyebrow furrows and smile lines come with expressing emotions. Day after day, skin is exposed to these multiple stimuli sending repeated messages to facial muscles to contract, creating wrinkles.Where common injectables work at refraining muscles from contracting by inhibiting the signaling pathway at one specific stage, La Prairie’s Line Interception Power Duo acts at three different stages. Three specialized peptides work on different levels to inhibit the signaling pathway, thus helping to prevent the formation of lines. Skin’s exposure to UVA and UVB harmful rays and also infrared radiation can cause sun-induced fine lines, resulting in premature aging over time. Line Interception Power Duo-Day cream features a SPF 30, UVA and IRA protection, working to prevent these environmentally determined fine lines. Never has a day cream acted so early on the appearance of wrinkles. AT NIGHT Aging and gravity due to skin degradation and weakening can create creases and folds. Line Interception PowerDuo-Night formula helps the skin to regenerate for a younger-looking face. At night, the skin is in a regenerative mode, skin renewal is accelerated and repair processes take place. As skin ages, these natural processes slow down and are less efficient. Line Interception Power Duo Night formula helps to compensate for this decline and to regenerate the skin at major levels, counteracting the impact of daily aggressions. Formulated with anti-wrinkle peptides, Line Interception Power Duo-Night cream helps stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid and strengthen the extracellular matrix. Additionally, Line Interception Power Duo-Night cream has been formulated to support proteasome activity. By targeting the elimination of damaged proteins in the skin, it helps optimize skin renewal. Skin seems renewed, as if it has recovered new strength. Never has a night cream restored so deeply. Line Interception Power Duo formulas also feature La Prairie’s exclusive Cellular Complex, targeting essential cells and components of the extracellular matrix for a rejuvenated skin appearance. Pioneer in cellular science, La Prairie introduced this complex that is at the heart of every formula since the beginning.

A DUO OF DESIGN A duo of breakthrough formulas working in tandem for one perfect solution. Day and Night. These are two different textures, two different sensations, for a pleasurable application day after day, night after night. Two weeks is all it takes for fine lines, vertical and deep wrinkles to fade leaving the skin incredibly smooth, de-lined and relaxed. Two separate chambers are at the core of one sleek object. A dual-barrel in one pump bottle carrying a shiny silver side for the day and a matte black side for the night.Designed with archetypal Swiss minimalism, Line Interception Power Duo was conceived for a precise application process. Its anti-leakage locking mechanism guarantees worry-free travel and an optimized distribution system.

14 DAYS. 14 NIGHTS Line Interception Power Duo is the natural companionof the Anti-Aging Rapid Response Booster. Together, they constitute the perfect duo to effectively fight wrinkles. Anti-Aging Rapid Response Booster prepares the skin for the extracellular matrix renewal by improving skin quality. Line Interception Power Duo completes renewal at night and protects from wrinkle-inducing stressors during the day. When combining the two products, the benefits are amplified, day after day and night after night.

Opening with star tenor Placido Domingo on the 31 August 2016 the iconic dhow-shaped building of Dubai Opera is a masterpiece of contemporary design, and a stylish tribute to Dubai’s maritime history. Dubai Opera is designed to resemble a dhow, a traditional sailing vessel, in which the 'bow' of the structure will house the opera's main stage, orchestra and seating, while the elongated 'hull' will have the waiting areas, taxi drop-off areas, and parking. The building’s attractive design, by famous Danish architect Janus Rostock, has the extraordinary ability to transform into three modes; from a theatre into a concert hall, and into a ‘flat floor’ mode becoming a banquet or event hall. This amazing feat of engineering with its seamless flexibility enables Dubai Opera to allow a wide diversity of performances and events including theatre, opera, ballet, orchestras, concerts, fashion shows, live entertainment, conferences, galleries and cultural art exhibitions. In Theatre mode, the space is suitable for large-scale drama productions, musicals, ballets, lectures, and conferences, seating up to 2,000 people, depending on seating arrangements. When transformed into a concert hall, a series of towers and reflectors on stage and overhead are designed to create an acoustic shell around the orchestra, enabling a flawless acoustic setting for the impeccable sound quality. Dubai Opera also boasts exclusive fine dining to chic lounges and family friendly restaurants, including a stunning rooftop restaurant and sky garden with views of The Dubai Fountain and the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa. With its unique 2000-seat multi-format theatre, Dubai Opera is a ultimate international destination for performing arts and world-class entertainment productions. Dubai Opera passionately embraces its role as the vibrant cultural heart of Dubai, and is committed to produce and host the finest, authentic, creative and engaging performing arts experiences from Dubai and the world. Dubai Opera is now a must see on any itinerary to Dubai.

Bottega

Veneta’s Glittering SS17 Collection Bottega Veneta’s Art of Collaboration ongoing project returns for the Spring/Summer 2017 advertising campaign through the eye of American photographer Todd Hido. The campaign was shot in New York City at the Modulightor Building, designed by the legendary architect Paul Rudolph. Also known as the Building of Light, this iconic structure features interwoven horizontal and vertical spaces with a combination of large and small windows along the façade to create a distinct and surprising sense of airiness, depth and dimension in a relatively small space. The choice of the modulightor building is in keeping with creative director Tomas Maier’s profound passion as well as the house’s commitment to modernist art and architecture. The Spring/Summer 2017 collection marks Bottega Veneta’s 50th anniversary as well as the 15th year of Tomas Maier as creative director of the brand. For the occasion, a special collection of bags comprised of new styles combined with items from the archive, was presented along with the iconic intrecciato clutch worn by Lauren Hutton in the 1980’s movie American Gigolo. The actress once again carried the bag while on the runway during the Bottega Veneta’s special fashion show at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. Lauren Hutton’s legendary effortlessness and timelessness are captured in this campaign where she poses with Joan Smalls, Vittoria Ceretti, Hannes Gobeyn and Morten Nielsen, to represent the idea of iconic beauty. The long and fluid silhouettes comfortably envelop the models’ bodies with the simplicity of the superfine fabrics in light tones, while the multicolored and vibrant palette of leather garments are juxtaposed against the modernist building.Todd Hido has a special affinity for capturing homes in suburban America and enriching them with a sense of character through the way he perceives and captures light. His shots are often suggestive, deeply saturated and appear to have a glow which the photographer creates exclusively through natural lighting. In his more recent work he introduced the human body to the interiors of the homes he shoots creating a narrative of tension and intimacy. His singular and sophisticated aesthetic blends with the essence of Bottega Veneta.

27

“I am a great admirer of Todd’s work, his images speak quietly yet extremely suggestively in a subtle way and his use of light and color creates moods that are unique. We have a similar approach and sensibility, I like his sense of delicacy and intuition,” says Tomas Maier. The Art of Collaboration was introduced by Tomas Maier after he joined Bottega Veneta as creative director in 2001. The ongoing project invites worldrenowned visual artists to collaborate on the campaign for each season. Todd Hido has joined this list of celebrated photographers, which includes Viviane Sassen, Nobuyoshi Araki, Nan Goldin, PhilipLorca diCorcia, Pieter Hugo, Peter Lindbergh and Juergen Teller, who have contributed to the creation of Bottega Veneta’s advertising portfolio. www.bottegaveneta.com

Success Is Upside Down Getting Comfortable with Paradox and Contradiction

36 36

OONNEE CO COAASSTT

body&mindmindful lifestyle

“What should I do about the wild and the tame? The wild heart that wants to be free, and the tame heart that wants to come home. I want to be held. I don't want you to come too close. I want you to scoop me up and bring me home at nights. I don't want to tell you where I am. I want to keep a place among the rocks where no one can find me. I want to be with you.” Jeanette Winterson We struggle to be consistent. We want others to be consistent. We want the world to be consistent. But, as we know deep down — the world, us, everyone else — are systems of contradiction and paradox. We feel the tension between what we want, taking action, and then asking, “Do we really want this?”

But there’s another way. Fear is the doorway to courage. As the saying goes, courage isn't the absence of fear, but rather it is acting despite it. Fear may seem opposed to courage, but one could argue without fear, no one would ever be courage’s. It is fear itself that musters one’s resolve to do what must be done, if one allows it. Because of this I have learned to change my relationship with fear. Rather than seeing it as contradictory and residing myself to its fate, I now see it for what it truly is, a precursor to succeeding despite of overwhelming odds to the contrary. “One is fruitful only at the cost of being rich in contradictions.” Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols

The constant paradoxes and contradictions we face each and every day in ourselves, in others and in the world, makes many of us tune out. We use entertainment, drugs, alcohol and fantasy — all in hopes to steer our minds away from the uneasy fact — that the ideal of perfection is not only fleeting, it is, to a large degree unattainable. You see, I think we have success all wrong. Success is not the absence of contradiction or paradox, but rather the embracing of them. It is only when we recognise the tension of contradiction, saying one thing and doing another, as two ends of a scale that can lead us to find our point of balance — or the paradox of self-contradictory statements or propositions that ultimately, when investigated, lead to the truth. “I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.”

In the same light, the paradox for me as a martial artist, is that as my living is dependent on my fists, one would think that this then means I am inherently violent. I am sure that most people who know nothing of him, on hearing what I do for a living think so too. But the paradox of my martial art journey is that, by going into the violence — both against other people on the mat, but equally my own inner violence towards myself — has allowed me to transcend the violence itself. By knowing how to fight, I no longer want to fight, with myself, or anyone else for that matter. As Oscar Wilde noted, “ Well, the way of paradoxes is the way of truth. To test reality, we must see it on the tight rope. When the verities become acrobats, we can judge them.”

Plato, The Republic For example, as a martial artist I have felt on more than one occasion fear. This fear has often come in the form of fear of engaging with a potential overwhelming opponent. This in itself, is a contradiction. I am well versed in my craft, and shouldn’t feel such intense fear. Left unchecked though, I could quit easily tip the scale to unbalance, and allow the fear to rule my actions.

“I have never agreed with my other self wholly. The truth of the matter seems to lie between us.” Kahlil Gibran

WHAT IS ALL THE HYPE ABOUT?

HYPE LUXURY BOAT CLUB One Coast Magazine would like to welcome the Hype Luxury Boat Club Team in Phuket for this edition. The Hype Luxury Boat Club seems to have seamlessly integrated some of the most loved recreational themes that Phuket is already famous for. The nightlife scene has already crept onto a few beaches and there is an amazing selection of tropical beach clubs offering a variety of scenes. But for the first time we have a beach club set on a beautiful stylish catamaran, of course One Coast needed to find out more.

focusabout them

The owners of Hype Luxury Boat Club from the left to the right. Yohan Cardinal / Thuy Diep / Gwenael Tessier / Florian Collin

Florian Collin, thank you very much for letting One Coast join your team today and to find out a little more about the Hype luxury boat club, and would you first give our readers a short introduction? We are 5 partners in Hype, K. Lamphun Tangnoi from Kamala Tailand Thuy Diep,Yohan Cardinal, Gwenael Tessier and Myself. We are all from the same hometown, Rennes and have been from friends for around 17 years. Have you been involved in the Beach Club scene before? Not at all, all of us, come from the fashion & construction industry. But, of course we were customers in many beach clubs in Europe, and our inspiration comes from all these experiences we had in the past. Who had the original idea of starting the beach club on a catamaran? Yohan have this idea; he would like to rent a catamaran to celebrate his birthday and he found a boat party in Ibiza (so we decided to go there). This experience was so much fun that we adopted the idea but decided to adapt our concept to make it more luxury, with beach club vibes, facilities and services. After that we all quit our jobs, to arrive in Phuket November 2014 to create Hype. How long have you been offering this service? From the 28th of February 2015, so it’s almost 2 years now. We will celebrate our anniversary on this day from 9pm till late. Has this beautiful stylish catamaran been built purposely for the luxury beach club No, this catamaran is second hand but we completely rebuilt and adapted our ideas to this boat. Also, we are in the process to design a new catamaran completely custom made for our concept, it will be bigger, more comfortable, more useful, more fun, more luxury…… With this new boat, we are starting the Hype Franchise, so if one of your readers is interesting in our concept, they just need to contact us……

Can you tell us a little about the services you offer? We offer luxury excursions, We operate from Tuesday to Sunday all year long. The excursion starts at 1pm to 7pm, the beginning of the day is with a lounge atmosphere and quiet music so our guest can relax, enjoy the delicious buffet and look at the wonderful panorama around them. Our boat is fitted out to be comfortable and to have much space to move around (Dancefloor, Bar, Spacious Trampoline). Included in your tickets are a welcome cocktail, a delicious food buffet, fresh fruit, all the soft drink, juice and water you can drink, towel and snorkelling equipment. The quality of the services during the day is important for us so our staff are trained to take special care of you, giving you that exclusive feeling all day long. How many people could you comfortably fit on the catamaran? We can comfortably fit 85 people, and we now have a second floor dedicated to couples and the independent travellers. You offer an amazing selection of finger foods and drinks; do you have a chef on board and a mixologist? We work with a catering company who deliver every day 1hour before the start of the day all our fresh items. This food is cooked in their kitchen every morning. About the drink list, our staff do a regular training session twice a year to keep their cocktail skills to a high level. If today, you had a private charter just for you alone where would be that special place to visit? We discovered a small island between Prom Thep and Racha Island name Bon Island, it’s very beautiful and quiet. Why have you chosen Phuket for this business? We chose Phuket at first because of the wonderful landscape. We’ve been here many times on vacation and fell in love with the beach and nature, the second reason is because out here our activity can operate 12 months a year. And the last reason is because we love the Thai culture and the lifestyle here.

Live to Ride in Thailand

Let’s make a clear bold statement here, Thailand is undoubtedly one of the greatest motorcycling destinations on this planet. Nowhere else in this world are you going to get such road surface quality, amazing stunning scenery to ride on and the Thai quality of hospitality and service. The memories and experiences from even a few days of riding will be something that should be at the top of your bucket list. Thailand offers a vast array of scenery and routes and in this edition of One Coast we are going to burn some rubber and head North. Waterfalls, glimmering temples, national parks and raging rivers abound in the far north, northeast and upper central areas of Thailand make riding a dream. From Bangkok heading North the scenery is typically low land and agricultural green backdrop, smiling farmers, canals, and lush fruit plantations on all sides. Further North the beautiful mountains start to rise out of the ground and the scenery is magnificent, Northern Thailand is cooler than the rest of the blistering country and preferred riding months are in the in the dry seasons from March to June, which is hot and November to February which are the cool. In the mountains at night the temperatures can go below freezing in the cold season, but don’t worry the normal areas still have around 25 degrees Celsius. Giving concrete directions is the wrong thing to do, what is needed for the soul is a good bike to ride, some money to spend and companionship to enjoy it with. You’ll find roads and breath-taking scenery around the North and generally very well surfaced roads, for those of you enjoying a carousel ride try riding from Chiang Mai through Pai to Mae Hon Son only 236 km but with 1,864 curves. Certainly worth a stop is at the hot springs and pool - about half way from Chiang Mai to Pai, there’s an actual hot tub you can jump into with a Hollywood view over the mountains that will take you breath away. Just keep a good grip on your camera. 54

O N E CO A S T

lifestylecoast ride With spectacular mountains, vibrant hill tribes and a relaxed atmosphere, Thailand's unofficial "second city" of Chiang Mai is everything Bangkok isn't. You can still lose yourself in Chiang Mai's majestic mountains, still find a peaceful picnic spot next to a natural stream or stop off and have an amazing break with some of its friendly people. It’s an amazing blend of ancient cultures and natural wonders that create a character unique to a region once known as the Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields, or "Lanna" in Thai. The whole area just beckons to be explored and there is nothing better than just jumping on a bike and heading off with no real direction in mind. It doesn’t matter where you go there will always be small gas stations and many small Thai road side restaurants to stop. Only requirement here is a smile and you will feel the warmth of the Thai people. Understanding Thai is not a prerequisite and an open friendly heart and some gestures will get you what you want. There are many bike rentals and shops that will rent you a bike and often offer guided tours. These often offer back up services and will guide you through known routes giving those of you that don’t want to get completely lost some peace of mind. Here I only like to give a few tips, pick a bike that you are comfortable to ride. Generally, any bike with more than a few 100cc would be adequate but it’s completely up to you whether your dream is to cruise around on a Harley or a chopper feeling like Peter Fonda or Jack Nicholson. Make sure the bike has at least third party insurance (understand that with this you are liable for damages to the bike) and is taxed and road worthy. Ensure you have insurance that covers you for any injury on your riding journey (read the small print) and wear a quality helmet and I do advise a full face. You’re going to adore the country and fall in love with its beautiful people. Embrace the feeling and relax with some of the nicest folk in the world. Enjoy yourself but keep the alcohol and the bike separate. There is nothing like an ice-cold beer after a day cruising around the mountains but leave this luxury till the end of the day. Get out there ride your hearts out and enjoy one of the best countries in the world.

Class pickup that knows no Compromise

OONNEE CO COAASSTT

lifestylecoast drive Let’s be serious, pickup trucks are not only cool and versatile but for getting around SE Asia the most practical vehicle to have. This has obviously been noticed by Mercedes-Benz who until now have only produced high class luxury cars and limousines. In 2017 they are taking an all-new direction with their all-new X-Class range, which is going to put everything else into the shade. Now still, in its concept stage, the X-Class was showcased in two variants – Explorer and Adventurer, giving us a real taste of an aggressive pick up with that famous Mercedes Benz flair. But why build a pickup truck at all? It may seem a bit far off for a manufacturer of extravagant cars, but Mercedes has plenty of knowledge with commercial vehicles and off roaders, such as the military-bred G-Class, Unimog, Sprinter and Metris vans. The designs hint that the X-Class will be more of a luxury vehicle than a workhorse. The differentiating factor for the X-Class, as compared to other pickups, would be the first-class treatment it receives in the form of interiors that take inspiration from the C-Class and V-Class models. Mercedes promises high end technologies that will allow owners to track their vehicles’ locations and import navigation destinations direct from your phone, among other features. The X-Class will also feature “modern driver assistance systems based on cameras’ radar, and ultrasound sensors,” The top-of-the-line model will have a powerful V6 diesel together with 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which will be combined with an electronic traction control system, a transfer case with reduction gear, and two differential locks. Under extreme off-road conditions, the rear differential and the inter-axle differential can be locked, making it easier to go through difficult obstacles and inclines. The X-Class will have a payload capacity of more than 1.1 tonnes and a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes. Which is easily enough power for tow a boat? The specially constructed suspension with wide axles, a five-link rear axle with coil springs, and a specifically calibrated spring/ damper set-up will ensure a high ride comfort – on the road and off the road. Safety, comfort, agility, and aggressive design – in other words, everything that characterises vehicles bearing the Mercedes star.” www.mercedes-benz.com

he developer of Phuket's most expansive upscale resort and residential community MontAzure, has launched the latest exciting addition to its beachfront development in Kamala bay – an upscale beach club branded by world famous Café del Mar. The region’s hippest new beachside venue occupies a 2.5 Rai (4000 sqm) site with 40 metres of beach frontage. A slick, contemporary tropical design has been created by award-winning K Studio whose other signature projects include several celebrated retail, residential and leisure developments in Greece, including the ultra-stylish, heritage-inspired Scorpios Beach Club in Mykonos. “As the island’s longest established entertainment specialists, it’s a great honour for us to work with two major names on such a high-profile project for Phuket,” said Santeri Nurmi, Managing Director of Café del Mar, Phuket. “The stunning waterfront strip at MontAzure is second-tonone and the perfect location for a lifestyle driven international beach club. Café del Mar will also provide the ideal venue for unrivalled events and world class performances.” “The arrival of such an iconic brand on the Island demonstrates Phuket’s ongoing appeal as a premium destination” commented advisor to the venture, Ms. Supaluck Umpujh, chairwoman of The Mall Group, whose portfolio of projects include Siam Paragon, Emporium, EmQuartier, the recently opened BLUPORT Hua Hin Resort Mall and the upcoming BLUPEARL, the first world class luxury retail and entertainment center in Phuket, scheduled to open in 2018. “We have been looking at Phuket for many years, but in the past the infrastructure was lacking. Things are improving now, an extension of the airport is taking place, the formation of the Asean Economic Community [AEC]; it all can help Phuket become a playground of Southeast Asia,” Ms. Supaluck added.

The Café del Mar brand has built an inimitable reputation around the globe for its laid back coastal venues and original chill-out tunes. The label was born in Ibiza in 1980 at a bar next to San Antonio beach, and grew from the simple notion that people enjoy a relaxed evening by the sea while listening to great music and sipping on top quality drinks. Since 1994, Café del Mar has been releasing its own compilations of chill out, lounge, ambient, chill house and Balearic beats – music that reflects the spirit and atmosphere of Ibiza. With more than 70 CD releases to date and millions of copies sold, Café del Mar is one of the largest music publishers of its genre in the world. A line-up of world class musicians have worked with the label including Moby, Underworld, Chicane and the legendary DJ Sanchez and José Padilla. “Introducing such an illustrious global name as Café del Mar to the beachfront zone at MontAzure underlines our commitment to the very best international standards as we continue to build Southeast Asia’s most impressive oceanfront resort and residential community,” said MontAzure Executive Director Setthaphol Boottho. “With partners such as Café del Mar, Twinpalms, Proud Real Estate and InterContinental Hotel Group, we are quickly positioning the North Kamala beachfront as Phuket’s high-end hospitality hotspot.”

Tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Rama IX

Royal Development Projects 66

“We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people.”

This is Oath of Succession to the Throne taken by His Majesty King Bhumibol, Rama IX during his coronation on the 5th of May 1950.This declaration, spoken by His Majesty at his coronation ceremony was his first public pledge to promote the welfare of all his subjects. Throughout his 65-year reign he has fulfilled this promise to the letter. More than 3,000 development projects have been initiated by the King and implemented throughout the country, most of them aimed at improving the living conditions of his subjects, especially those in the remote rural areas. No one in the history of the Kingdom of Thailand has done so much to improve the well-being of its people as His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, also known as Rama IX. Greatly concerned with the people's well-being, His Majesty the King, in the early days of his reign, paid constant visits to every region of the country, particularly to remote and underdeveloped rural areas. It should be noted that His Majesty stayed often in the remote provinces more that he did in Bangkok. During the visits, His Majesty closely interviewed the people and officials himself while observing the topographical conditions of the area to obtain first-hand data himself being so concerned with the people's well-being, these would be his guidelines for his royal initiatives in the implementation of the Royal Development Projects. At the beginning of his reign, His Majesty the King's compassion towards his subjects was mostly shown through the launching of medical and social welfare projects because the country's medical sector at that time was insufficient and the public health services were not widely available like at present. They placed emphasis on relief of the people's immediate trouble. In 1950, the Cholera epidemic, which remained spread throughout the country, killed many the infected patients. Accordingly, on April 6, 1950, His Majesty the King consulted with Luang Payung Vejasart, then Director-General of the Department of Public Health, as quoted in an excerpt of his royal statement as follows; “Mr. Director-General, these days, can Cholera be cured yet? Do we lack any medicines? If needed, I will provide you with them. I would like to see the country's medical affairs progress.” During the Cholera epidemic, saline was desperately needed but the cost of imported saline was too high while the quality of domestic saline was such that patients who received it allegedly went into shock. His Majesty the King then initiated the conduct of study and research as well as advocated the production of a saline refining machine. As a result, the quality of the domestically-produced saline had been upgraded to the same level of international standard. Later in 1953, His Majesty graciously donated 500,000 Baht from his private funds to construct the “Mahidol Memorial Building” in Saovapha Compound for scientific and medical purposes. In fact, it was aimed particularly to produce B.C.G. vaccine to fight against tuberculosis, which was at that time extensively inflicting the life of the Thai people.

67

His Majesty's development work which followed was the Royal Medical Team set up from His Majesty's private funds. The team has been providing mobile medical treatment on the Thai Red Cross Vejapaha barge for the people residing along the banks of the rivers until now. Since then, His Majesty's benevolence displayed through these activities has become the extension of the country's social welfare philosophy, which instills profoundly in the hearts of the Thai people living in every corner of the country the concepts of mutual popular assistance in the face of hardship. The first Royal Development Project began in 1951 when His Majesty the King authorized the Department of Fisheries to acquire the Tilapia mosambica fish from Penang through FAO. The fish were initially raised in the pond at the Ambara Villa. Then on November 7th 1953, His Majesty distributed the Tilapia mosambica fingerlings to village and district leaders throughout the country for propagation and further distribution among the rural people to provide them with an alternative source of protein. The first Royal Development Project which directly emphasized rural development emerged in 1952 when His Majesty the King donated several bulldozers to the Naresuan Border Patrol Police Unit for constructing a road leading to Huai Mongkol Village in Hin Lek Fai Subdistrict (presently Thap Tai Subdistrict), Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. This was to enable the villagers to easily commute and transport their farm produce for sale in the markets outside the village. Then in 1953, His Majesty granted an initiative to construct Khao Tao Reservoir in Hua Hin District of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The reservoir was the first Royal Development Project concerning irrigation with the intention of helping to relieve drought which has had an adverse effect on the people's livelihood. The King has thus become not only the most travelled monarch in Thai history but also the best informed about the whole spectrum of rural problems in Thailand. The Royal Projects: They are the private projects of Their Majesties the King and Queen, such as the crop substitution project in the North, which aimed at stopping opium cultivation, deforestation and the slash and burn cultivation method traditionally used by the hilltribes. His Majesty has given them advice and assistance on the planting of cool climate fruits and flowers for a better income. The Projects Under Royal Patronage: These are projects operated by the private sector using its own financial, technical and human resources and based on His Majesty's advice and guidelines. They include the Thai Encyclopedia for Youth Project, the Dictionary Project and the Din Daeng Cooperative Village Development Project. To facilitate the implementation of the Royal Development Projects, His Majesty initiated the establishment of six Royal Development Study Centres, in various regions of the country to serve as the place for conducting study, research and experimentation in search of development guidelines and methods suitable to the different conditions of each area and the occupations of the local people. The results of such study, research and experimentation will be disseminated to the local people. The Centres are also intended to serve as "living natural museums" where interested people can come to observe and gain knowledge from the real thing. The Six Centres are in Chiang Mai in the North, Chachoengsao, Phetchaburi and Chanthaburi in the Central Plain, Sakon Nakhon in the Northeast and Narathiwat in the South. His Majesty has diligently upheld the traditional Thai precepts of virtuous kingship by assisting his subjects to alleviate their distress and increase their happiness. Indeed, he is today recognized not only by the Thai people, but also by knowledgeable foreign people, as the only monarch in the world who is dedicated both mentally and physically to development work for the sake of the nation. Hubba-to were nominated in February 2017 for “Building of the Year” in various categories in the World Architecture Festival Awards, billed as the largest architectural assembly in the world, highlighting how Thailand’s landscape is becoming more artsy, cutting edge and certainly distinctive in modern times. Hubba-to is Southeast Asia’s newest co-working and creative space located in the new Habbito Mall in a residential area of Ornnuch, Bangkok.

75

At 989 square meters (10,645 sq.ft.) it is also the largest co-working environment in Southeast Asia. Habbito is a huge shopping centre, the first of its kind for developer Sansiri who together with Hubba Thailand set out to create not just shared spaces for working but also well-equipped artisan studios for creative people. The design of the entire Hubba-to project was entrusted to Bangkok’s own Architectural & Interior Design Studio Supermachine. Supermachine’s team lead by architect Yupadee Suvisith, with Pitupong Chaowakul, created a cohesive environment by using a few ingenuous and simple ideas, mainly with colour and utility pipes. Instead of hiding the pipes, the designers highlighted them with a bright turquoise colour. They then allowed the pipes’ shape and ever-present connecting and joining function to become the one unifying décor theme.

The space is open for 24 hours a day, and the goal of the developer and partners is to create a true creative hub, and to boost the development of Thailand’s design and creative fields.

Eat & live healthy

Privacy and security are becoming more and more of a concern now with such high-speed data access and internet and valuable data being stored on smartphones. Ghostery is one of the largest privacy tools available for iOS. By adding Ghostery to your iPhone or iPad, you can block tracking from companies you don’t trust. Ghostery will show you which companies are tracking you, and you can decide which companies you want to block or allow. Ghostery for iOS also includes bookmarking cookie/cache clearing, and search via DuckDuckGo.

Alarmy calls itself "the world's most annoying alarm." When users set an alarm, they also set a location that they need to take a picture of, otherwise, the alarm just won't shut off. A popular idea is to set your bathroom sink as your target location, forcing you to get out of bed and over to the sink so you can get a start on the day. Other options include the ability to use your music as your alarm tone and a "shake mode" in iOS for turning the alarm off with several shakes.

Fooducate helps you shop and eat healthy by allowing you to quickly pull up nutritional information about food products from barcodes, as well as by helping you make sense of nutritional labels. The app displays a letter grade from A to D, along with a quick summary of nutrition information in plain language, as well as smart healthy alternative suggestions. If you are cooking your own meals or eating out, you can also manually enter a meal's nutritional information. In addition, the app also doubles as an intake, calorie and exercise tracker.

In closing, the black and white simplicity stand opposite to the sensuality of animalier softened with light pink and pearls brooches. Special note for accessories, bags and shoes finishing emerges from this colorful opposites theory with funny variations and unique makings. Red-pink and red-blue combos feature on elastic stripes and reinvent themselves on patent leather, brining to life playful bow-sneakers, loafers with fringes and sexier sandals on 5cm heels. The same tones inspire bi-colored bags in different sizes including a removable sack and gross grain bow on handles. Elastic bands appear also on sneakers in yellow and pink, moreover matched with cork for the new derby and with animalier for 5cm and 10cm heel sandals. Colors come back on shoppers and handbags, both bi-colored thanks to the glazed leather, well-shown in shoulder straps. White, black and gold for sandals with elegant binds of elastic bands and straps, in multiple versions, from flat to 10cm heels, definitely going well with shining foldable purses. Valentin Yudashkin

Russian fashion czar admired by all By Nagmani In recent years, the influence of Russian designers on the international fashion scene has been absolutely stupefying to say the least. Without a doubt, they’ve left an indelible impression on the psyche of fashion fraternity. And it’s for good reason by all accounts. With their tempting dresses they are constantly creating for the affluent clients worldwide, they are certainly making waves. As a result, they seem to be catching people’s eye in the four fashion capitals of the globe from New York to London, Paris and Milan every season. In this A-list, there is no denying that the first name that comes to the fore is the very famous Valentin Yudashkin for whom fashion is a way of life that allows him to engage vigorously with cinema and theatre at the other end in order to create various scenic images as well as outstanding outfits for the actresses and singers. “There is a lot I love to be good at in my life. It’s always about pushing the boundaries one way or another” , he says. It’s no wonder that Yudashkin savors the buzz of fashion so much so that he sees it as some sort of permanent work for him, which, in his view, basically implies a constant search of new forms, originality in decision-making and creation of new collections. “This is what attracts me to it a lot”, he says.

Valentin Yudashkin

Even though Yudashkin is understood to have been a keen follower of the Russian school of thought in fashion since 1986 (the year when he graduated with distinctive degrees in history of traditional costumes and make-up and decorative cosmetics from Moscow Industrial Secondary School), Paris really had a big impact on his fashion sense. “The work that I did in Paris influenced me a lot. In addition, the French Haute couture school changed my way of thinking as a designer, which is evidently visible and differs from, for example, the Italian and the American fashion schools. The French fashion school is solely based on the permanent search of the new ideas on the basis of classical art”, he says. When it comes to designing magnificent haute couture Yudashkin is revered for the world over, he doesn’t shy away from giving in to a little bit of luck for his ever glowing couture collections. “It’s quite a delicate process to excel at. So you need to make a wish to have it on your side. However, the game stays the same; it all depends upon your vivid ingenuity you think you can generate within yourself to make a difference”, he says. Be it designing prêt-a-porter or haute couture collection, he believes it’s always necessary to find a relevant theme which is genuine and interesting. “This is a sought-after way to strike a chord with your clients anywhere in the world”, Yudashkin says.

85

Creating finest visuals of a woman’s figure in mind is an integral part of Yudashkin’s thought process. “For me, it’s absolutely necessary. We have been in fashion for many years and, surely, we understand people for whom we create our clothes. If a client is private and we make a product by individual order, then there will be more questions to answer than it is for a usual haute couture collection, because individual dresses are created directly for the clients. These dresses aren’t for the catwalk fun at all”, he says. Each dress is developed using a big arsenal of natural fabrics (silk, chiffon, taffeta, organza, velvet, lace and others) that Yudashkin imports from far afield places like France, Italy and Switzerland where they are produced. “Once the fabrics reach our studio, we start working on combining them with the art of handmade formula and in so doing create our collections”, he says. His obsession with muses While designing his collections,Yudashkin loves to hold on to muses from across the board. “From season to season, our focus changes and is therefore centered on those muses or women from the cinemas, ballets, who may be an actress, a historical figure, or a brilliant heroine from the literary works”, he says. “Our search never ends. I made collections dedicated to Ann Karenina, Queen Elizabeth (Russian tsarina), Catherine the Great (another Russian tsarina), and cinema divas of the Russian, Italian and Hollywood films.” And the list of celebs donning his marvelous creations is also impressive with the likes of Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Nicole Scherzinger and many more. “Of course, our clothes are worn by a lot of Russian celebrities, singers, and actresses: Alla Pugacheva, Polina Gagarina, Yulia Savicheva, Zara, Natalya Ionova, Kristina Orbakaite, Aleksandra Savelyeva, Aglaya Shilovskaya and a lot of others,” he says. Yudashkin adores the trend of celebrity endorsement which he thinks is one of the many important elements of fashion business where the brands need to have a strong linkage. “Any work needs to be in demand. In addition, there is always a place for the critics. As for me an endorsement – it’s simply a purchase. If a dress is bought by a private client or by a museum, it means that this outfit was made perfectly”, he says. “I feel rewarded.” His global success story is proof that the fashion landscape of Russia is pretty much driven by vibrant energies and will ultimately go on inspiring many inside the country to take the plunge towards the most happening and artistic field they can hope for.

86

Russian women’s penchant for style In the old days, a Russian woman didn’t enjoy so many possibilities when it came to forming her own style. “However, during the last 30 years our women have represented themselves as free and unrestrained in their choice of what they want to wear, what brands they select and be able to buy anything they want in any part of the world,” Yudashkin says. Not only that, he also believes in the last 5 years everything has drastically changed in the fashion world because there are new media, new information technologies, and new opportunities available to do the purchasing. So now women from the Middle East, Russia or from Europe do not differ in this respect. “They all have the same privilege today to create their own style and look. Russian women have their own style, their own color preferences in the same way as the French, Italian and Asian women do,” he says. While many new things are in the pipeline on behalf of Yudashkin to take his brand to soaring heights, one of them he is currently working on is the re-branding of it. “We will be glad to represent to the public our new concept in 2017,” he says. www.yudashkin.com

Daou jewelry

ready to entice jewelry lovers once again By Nagmani

There are too many jewelry brands that have always been in the limelight for being associated with high-profile people including celebrities and royal families from all over the world thanks to their marvelously uplifting designs. But none like the very popular brand “Daou” since 1930s, which is designed today by the third-generation Lebanese-born London-based jewelry designer Dalia Daou whose revival of it in 2014 went on to catch everyone’s attention. Ever since, she hasn’t looked back and her creations continue to create sensation among jewelry enthusiasts. Interestingly, the root of it all takes us back to Beirut in search of more exciting discoveries.

Dalia Daou 88 88

OONNEE CO COAASSTT

beautycool stuff In an exclusive interview with One Coast, we caught up with her to find out what drove her to start designing jewelry, what it means to her and much more.

Dalia worked in the luxury PR industry in New York at first and then stepped into the world of finance after returning to London before she chose jewelry design once and for all.

Dalia was born in a family that had a very flourishing jewelry business but with an interrupted history. So for her to become jewelry designer expert was no coincidence at all. She was determined to do it in order to preserve her family’s legacy that she knew was absolutely enriching. More so, she couldn’t let it go without a fight.

“After I left finance, it was certain I would return to art and it just seemed like a responsibility I should and could rise to for the sake of re-launching Daou Jewelry. It had all the challenges of a new business as well as a certain excitement and distinctiveness to recreating the brand for today”, Dalia explained.

“It all started with my grandfather, whom I never had the pleasure to know. Then, my father took it to another majestic level in Beirut in the 1960s and 1970s with clients like Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Queen Elizabeth II and others who fell in love with what we had to offer at that time. So I’ve grown up being familiar with the nuts and bolts of fine jewelry and I’ve always related jewelry with an extra sense of specialness”, she said.

While she is very proud of keeping her family’s legacy alive and admits that it’s exciting to tell the story once again, there is no denying that it’s also a huge responsibility for her. “I’ve to keep the highest standards and plan accordingly for the business development,” she said. “I just want to reach the same prestige of Daou it enjoyed at its heights in the 1960s and 1970s and even go beyond.”

In retrospect, Dalia’s sheer passion for art and sculpture led her to study it in depth at Wimbledon College of Art and l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This creative adventure prepared her for the role of a jewelry designer. “I’ve always studied art, even while attaining a Physics degree from the University of Bristol, so before I revived Daou Jewelry I first developed my artistic skills through specific jewelry courses that I did in Hatton Garden (London’s jewelry quarter) and at Central Saint Martins. I also studied gemology at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in London”, she said.

It’s no surprise that the Lebanese heritage indirectly influences her designs. “There aren’t any direct references of my background. But it’s true that Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s stood out as a place of glamour and elegance, exuberance and innovation, a certain pride and of course family”, she said.

Scintillating Daou designs Daou designs were always known for their innovative flair, use of color and forms and being ahead of their time. And for Dalia’s collections and bespoke pieces, these design markers are still central to the brand’s identity. “Modern pieces are always created with the essence of finesse and of course how they will be worn. I do seek out heritage designs sometimes and combine them with my own scientific and personal inspirations”, she said. For Dalia, designs are the result of a combination of so many inspirations coming together. For example, her Sunset Sunrise collection has the literal colors of beautiful dawn and dusk, but created in baguette cut stones as though painted in a modern impressionist style, and uses her knowledge of gemology in the stone selection. “The newest Phoenix collection tells the Daou story of revival, resilience, rarity and new femininity so inspired by a story, myth and birds of paradise,” she said. “It also features a return to imaginative use of colored gemstones and signature Daou play of light with handselected fine opals.”

Attending high-profile jewelry exhibitions, she believes, is very essential to the promotion of her label on a global scale. “The beauty of jewelry is flawlessly evident when seen and worn so it’s always a pleasure to show the Daou collections at important exhibitions and meet new collectors and see their reactions to what you have put on display. I hope I will be able to show at more international shows in the future”, Dalia said. Asked what differences she sees in terms of today’s women style of wearing jewelry, Dalia said, “Today jewelry is worn in a more individualistic and more adaptable way, just as wardrobes have become mix and match, worn with jeans or cocktail dresses, layered or statement pieces whether at work or during celebration time.” In the past cocktail rings were mainly for cocktail hours and brooches went with certain dresses, you couldn’t go without your earrings and matching sets of jewelry were absolutely customary. “But my observation so far is that Daou jewelry wearers and collectors have always been more enthusiastic and non-traditional with each Daou piece being original in style and never terribly matchymatchy”, she said. The comfort factor is another worthy aspect of her jewelry design that she can’t overlook. Therefore, it’s of supreme importance that she considers how her creations will flatter the wearer.

90

O N E CO A S T

“It should have the right sparkle and weight, that it won’t hinder a woman’s work and play in any way. I’ve definitely learnt this over a lifetime of familiarity with fine jewelry pieces. However innovative, modern and exciting the designs, this should be seen in the context of an important priority. What’s the point if you can’t happily wear beautiful jewelry”, she said. And when it comes to what types of women her jewelry is for, she doesn’t like to be prescriptive about it at all. “Rather, it’s for whoever values thoughtful design, contemporary exciting design that remains ever elegant and wearable. Jewelry that is made beautifully and to be enjoyed and treasured”, Dalia pointed out. “This is what women crave.” This April, she plans to make a trip to the Middle East region where women’s love for extravagant jewelry is quite promising. “It will be wonderful to return to the market here with Daou jewelry again because it’s very important both commercially and emotionally”, Dalia said. With so many prestigious awards under her wing now like New Designer of the Year at the UK Jewelry Awards and a place on British Fashion Council’s Rock Vault, she has certainly been able to position the Daou Jewelry brand strongly for all to see. “My next step would be to take new initiatives to reach private jewelry collectors as well as recognized and respected stockists the world over”, she said. To sum it up in her own words, nothing can be more pleasing than this: “Jewelry means history, love, thoughtfulness, and innovative creativity. It means these things both for the longevity and sentiment of treasured pieces which become family heirlooms.” www.daoujewellery.com

Committed to constantly reimagine how guests encounter its rich local heritage, the award-winning all-pool-villa beach resort introduces new villa categories, a holistic spa, unique restaurants and innovative personalized guest services. Nestled in a “managed jungle”, Trisara’s 39 hotel villas and 20 larger residences overlooking an exclusive beach have offered an unmatched guest experience since opening in 2004. Thick tropical vegetation surrounds each villa to provide guests with utmost privacy. “Trisara’s relaunch draws on our latest product design and service innovations to bring guests ever closer to our natural and cultural heritage”, said Mr. Narong Pattamasaevi, Chairman of Montara Hospitality Group, owner and operator of Trisara. Each new guest touchpoint introduced by Trisara’s relaunch reflects his vision. The new Ocean View Pool Junior Suites are perched on Trisara’s highest vantage point and feature a reflection pool that seems to float atop the resort’s manicured jungle. Beautiful lime-washed teak wood and Thai silk create an ambiance that is unmistakably Thai, elegant and timeless. On the same level, the larger Signature Ocean View Pool Suites offer an oversized king bed, ensuite bathroom, a living and dining area with convertible sofa bed, as well as an expansive deck with a 9 meter infinity pool. All suites overlook Trisara’s private beach and the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. 92

Each villa is assigned to a dedicated resort host who connects with guests prior to arrival and creates tailor-made experiences throughout their stay. Outside the resort, guests can discover local secrets & personalities during a personalized, hosted experience by their resort host. The new guest experiences create memorable encounters with the destination’s local heritage for guests to share with loved ones. Trisara’s DDEN, the world’s first resort production studio with professional photographers and videographers helps guests tell their own stories through novel digital formats, including photo, video and virtual reality.

Trisara’s new multi-bedroom residences bring together families & friends through wishgranting moments created by dedicated Thai service staff who prepare meals from the fully equipped kitchens and create memorable celebrations using the villas’ expansive teak decks and manicured gardens. The newly renovated and renamed Jara Spa takes guests on a journey of balanced wellbeing. Its holistic 5 pillar philosophy is inspired by the century old Ficus tree that envelopes the spa, and the believe that by nourishing the roots, engaging with the earth, providing strength to the core and taking care of the inner self, outward beauty will ultimately blossom. Tailormade “Discoveries” allow guests to achieve total wellbeing by addressing some or all of the 5 pillars. For example, the “Jara Local Discovery” includes a Thai massage lesson, Samunpai scrub & wrap with local Thai herbs, a Thai

thermal massage, Thai stretching and a walking meditation historically practiced by Buddhist monks. PRU is a new dining experience that seeks to elevate the farm-to-table-movement. It is a tribute to the unique terroir of the Andaman region. Grown on its own farm “Pru Jumpa”, foraged locally or sourced through a community of local farmers, fishermen and purveyors, each ingredient tells a unique story as it is transformed into original and inventive cuisine by Chef de Cuisine Jim Ophorst,Thailand’s contestant in the San Pellegrino Young Chef 2016 competition. Seafood at Trisara has also been relaunched to give guests an authentic taste of the destination’s culinary culture. The new menu is inspired by traditional local “mama” recipes passed through the generations, offered in a relaxed, ocean front setting.

“With our new facilities and guest experiences we have reimagined the nurturing of our heritage, both in terms of the natural environment and local values,” added Mr. Narong. “Trisara has always been recognized as a luxury destination. BANGKOK SHOPPING AFTER DARK Saying Bangkok might be one of the world’s best cities for shopping Is quite a statement but not far from the truth. But shopping in the Big Smoke can be rather confusing and it’s possible to leave the city feeling a bit disappointed. In this issue One Coast with the help of Shannon Reaves has a closer look at Bangkok’s choice selection of night markets. Shopping at the night markets has an energy and vibe that you really must experience for yourself. Being much cooler at night is really an advantage and you will be pleasantly surprised at the bargains available which surpass those cheap clothes, knock-off brands and souvenirs you find on the road in popular tourist areas. The range of night markets in Bangkok is quite large and each one has their own various specialties and unique feature.Visiting some of these are a must on any visitor’s trip. Here some of our favorites.

Chatuchak Market Bangkok Is the biggest market in Thailand and is also known as J.J (JatuJak) market. Some say that JJ Market is one of the biggest and best Weekend Markets in the world. The market is mostly busier on weekends and it sells nearly all types of items. Some of these include: household items, clothing, jewellery, handcrafts, decorations, books, arts, pets, foods, ceramics, etc. It is divided into 27 sections with each section selling specific type of products. Chatuchak Market Bangkok is also surrounded by several hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, museums, parks and other attractions. www.facebook.com/ChatuchakmarketBangkok

Talad Rot Fai or Train Market Ratchada and Train Market Srinikarin Train markets are somewhat hip with the newest one in Ratchada being probably even more contemporary or trendy. However, they are just the ultimate Bangkok Market vibe in our opinion. The Srinakarin Train Market is harder to get to but once you are there you are in for the ultimate vintage shopping, music, and food experience. The Ratchada Train Market is right off the MRT and is one of the newest Markets in Bangkok. It has tons of unique Bars made from School Buses- Train Containers- VW Buses- and even a place to get a good haircut to be looking good! Right in the middle of all this Nightlife are many shopping vendors, food stalls, and all your basic Market items. If you visit Bangkok and do not make it to either of the Train Markets, then you are missing out of the true Bangkok experience.

JJ Green & Gypsy Market Another great one on our list is the the newer Market JJ Green ( Which also houses Siam Gypsy Market ) directly next to it, down the sidewalk adjacent to to Chatuchak Park. JJ Green is the Night Market aspect and has lots of music, good food, and great shopping. The Gypsy Market is fantastic for unique and retro gifts to. So, if you visit Chatuchak Market on Saturday, then you must make it over to JJ Green and Gypsy Market for the ultimate Bangkok Market Experience. Pratunam Market Pratunam Market in Bangkok consists of retail stores and outdoor stalls selling products for tourist use. In central Bangkok, this market is famous for providing top quality textiles, fashionable dresses, embroidered costumes (think feathers, beads and sequins) at amazing prices. Tourists can also purchase handcrafted goods, watches and many other items. The Pratunam Market Bangkok covers the complete area behind Indra Regent hotels and Amari Watergate. Pratunam market is mostly open 24 hours a day, but you will find some retail outlets shut down at 9 PM. While visiting Pratunam Market in Bangkok, along with shopping, visitors can explore the local life style and try out some of the fantastic street food available. Near the Pratanum market, you will find local people working on their sewing machines, carting trolleys passing through narrow lanes and labourers doing their work. Pratunam Market Bangkok is well known as a wholesale market. Vendors hold huge stocks of products and are focused on bulk sales at low prices. If you are prepared to buy 3 or more then you can get at wholesale price. As items are already available at cheap prices, you do not need to bargain too much. However, buyers must keep some important things in mind. • Items once purchases are cannot be returned • You might be able to try on but it will be Thai style

Saphan Phut and Flower Market Saphan Phut Night Market is one of the Markets visitors should check out on their visit to Bangkok. It usually is not going to be the one on the tourist trap ventures or one of the first Markets you will see on your trip. It is off the beaten path and gives you the local experience in small doses. It is not trendy in any way but has its own unique, low key vibe. It is directly off the Memorial Bridge and is cool to walk hand in hand across the bridge and check out the beautiful river scene. There are many good deals here to buy items that you might not find anywhere else. One of the other main reasons it makes the Top pick in my opinion is you can check out the 24-hour Flower Market or Pak Klong Talad that is within walking distance to the Market. It is awesome to see the amount of Flowers that are shipped in and the work being done. A truly great experience for your visit to Bangkok. www.nightmarketbangkok.com/night-market-bangkok/ saphan-phut-night-market/

Ramkhamhaeng Night Market Ramkhamhaeng Night Market is a favorite night market for women because here they can buy everything they need could need in clothing. Here you can find cheap clothes, cosmetics, jewellery, cosmetics, shoes, hair products, etc. There are also numerous barber shops and beauty salons within the market. The Ramkhamhaeng Night market gets busier during late evenings. The local people at this market are some of the friendliest around and it is not out of the norm to hear some unique live music being played by the locals. It’s a little farther out but is well worth the effort getting there.

Building materials and all engineering systems have been chosen to reduce operation and maintenance costs, and minimize negative effects on the surrounding ecosystem. Investors will have peace of mind that every effort has been taken to reduce their overall carbon footprint. With systems in place to harvest rainfall and reuse water, domestic appliances all have eco ratings of 5 out of 5, fitted sanitary ware items minimize water consumption, and high efficiency smart air conditioning units are placed in a well ventilated and shaded area. Design Paul Raff Studio won the 2012 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's 'Excellence Innovations in Architecture' award for designing Bluepoint's Louver Façade System. The design was generated from a simple idea to maximize sea views while maintaining privacy.Their vertical plates are oriented by the movement of the sun,so that it does not heat up the house and the angle they are fixed on the windows allows nothing to be seen. This then led to further ecological benefits including reducing cooling costs by shading. bluEpoint availablE Show unit opEn now Bluepoint’s hard construction is 90% completed and with the first show unit completed their target is for the first owners to move in by November 2017. The People Eye Care Foundation (PECF) O

ne Coast Magazine recently met up with Angela Stafford, International Development Co-ordinator of the People Eye Care Foundation in Thailand. Angela has 17 years of involvement with the PECF and recently was voted in and offered the role of the International Development Coordinator which she accepted and commenced on 1st September. The PECF has been doing a wonderful job in Thailand helping poor people with impaired vision and blindness, especially if caused by cataracts. The PECF is a completely voluntary welfare organisation offering free cataract removal surgeries, treatment of diabetic retinopathy and training in the methods of natural eye vision improvement at remote community hospitals throughout Thailand. The participating hospitals are unable to offer such treatments themselves and the patients receiving help do not have the means to travel to larger tertiary level health care facilities where treatments are available.Without help from the PECF team patients in these communities face many hardships caused by impaired vision and blindness which may include the inability to work and maintain a living leading to isolation, loneliness, a sense of hopelessness and depression. Each cataract removal surgery costs on average 7,000 baht (200 USD) – this includes a replacement intraocular lens (5,000 baht), sterilised surgical equipment, pre-and post-operative medication and transportation by bus for the team. A PECF team of ophthalmologists, nurses and non-medical volunteers provide monthly eye missions throughout Thailand operating on between 100 to 150 eyes over a three-day period. Since being established 27 years ago, the PECF has restored the vision in over 35,000 eyes.

The PECF has recently launched two novel fundraising initiatives: The 'Eat Pad Thai to help pad-Thai-eyes กินผัดไทยช่วยคนให้มองเห็น' project .. for embassies, chambers of commerce, community groups, businesses, schools and individuals PECF is asking community groups, embassies, associations, businesses and individuals to organise Pad Thai lunches or parties where they charge a highticket price for a dish of Pad Thai - a relatively cheap meal to prepare and donate the difference generated by the event to the People Eye Care Foundation. The British Women’s Group in Bangkok held a Pad Thai lunch at the British Club last September which raised 31,000 baht – enough to fund 5 replacement intraocular lenses for patients at the PECF eye mission at Sawankhalok Hospital in Sukhothai Province. The British Ambassador, H.E. Brian Davidson, has since offered the British Embassy Residence as a very special venue for a fundraising Pad Thai party later this year. … for Thai Restaurants Thai restaurants (in Thailand and overseas) can also support this project by adding a surcharge (for example; 1, 5 or 20 baht in Thailand, 1 GBP, 1 USD, 1 Euro overseas) to their Pad Thai dish with a remark on the menu that the surcharge will be donated to the PECF to help cover the cost of restoring eyesight to those blinded by cataracts. By eating Pad Thai their customers will be helping to ‘pad-a-Thai-eye’ after an operation. The Cabbages and Condoms UK restaurants in Bicester and Cheltenham have already signed up to the project and restaurants in Bangkok and the USA are being approached with the idea.

The PECF Photo-Logo 1 Million Baht Challenge ... Businesses can support the PECF's second fundraising project by donating for a promotional photograph starring the charity's mascot, Nicholas Bear. He will happily pose with their staff, use their products, dress in their uniform and visit their premises for the photo shoot.A similar project raised over 5,000 GBP in the UK for Treetops Hospice Care. The more creative and eye-catching the photograph, the better, as it will be posted and shared on social media to the PECF's supporters and the international community who will be asked to vote for their favourite PhotoLogo when the 1 Million Baht target has been reached. St Stephen’s International School has already invited Nicholas Bear to visit and theirYear 2 and Sixth Form students are busy studying eyes, cataracts and the PECF’s work as part of their social development course work during this academic year. Other notable supporters include the British Community in Thailand Foundation for the Needy who donated 250,000 baht from proceeds raised by their annual Ploenchit Fair and the Thai Canadian Chamber of Commerce who have pledged their support for a third year.

Luke Evans Visits

SAVE THE CHILDREN’S EDUCATION PROJECTS IN INDIA SUPPORTED BY THE CHARITY’S GLOBAL PARTNER BULGARI

S

ave the Children and Bulgari Ambassador Luke Evans travelled to India, which has the largest population of people living in poverty in the world, to visit two of the charity’s vital education programmes supporting vulnerable and marginalised children. Whilst in India, Luke – whose Hollywood blockbusters include The Hobbit, The Girl on the Train and the highly anticipated Beauty and the Beast – met children and families who have been supported by Save the Children’s education programmes. Luke visited a Save the Children education programme in Pune which has been developed in partnership with Bulgari – one of the charity’s global partners. As a Bulgari Ambassador, Luke was keen to see first-hand the impact their funding has had. Thanks to Bulgari, Save the Children has been able to reach almost 155,000 children across 245 schools – ensuring they receive a quality education and have the best start in life. Almost 18 million children in India do not receive an education – the highest number of any country in the world. Most children drop out of school because they need to earn money for their family so they are forced into child labour or because they have to stay at home to care for their younger siblings. Often even those who are fortunate enough to be enrolled in school cannot read or write properly by the age of 10 as the quality of schooling is poor. Without an education, many children will be trapped in poverty for the rest of their lives, unable to fulfil their potential and with little chance of a successful future. Luke also visited one of the most vulnerable slum communities in Mumbai which surrounds the Deonar land-fill site - the biggest dumping ground in Asia where the mountains of rubbish reach twenty meters deep. Many parents of the children living in these slums work on the garbage dump, sorting and selling rubbish and very few children have the opportunity to go to school. To support these vulnerable children, Save the Children has established a Mobile Learning Centre – a bus which has been transformed into a classroom. This bus is taken into these communities to give children the opportunity to access an education and to ensure that any child who has fallen behind in their education is given the chance to get back up to speed so they can return to school at the appropriate level for their age.

Commenting on his visit to India, Luke said: “It’s wrong that there are children growing up today who will never read a book, never write a letter or do basic maths. I visited one of the most deprived slum communities in Mumbai, where many children don’t get the chance to go to school. It was heart-breaking to see the terrible conditions that these children live in – the extreme levels of poverty in India have been totally shocking to me.” Among the children Luke met was Raja*, who is 14 years old. When Raja moved to Mumbai three years ago aged 11, he was forced to work in a local garment factory to supplement his family income. He had to work very long hours so was unable to attend school. Save the Children intervened and persuaded Raja’s parents to send him to school and thanks to the Mobile Learning Centre, he was able to catch up on his education. Raja now attends school regularly and dreams of becoming a scientist. Luke continued: “Seeing the impact that Save the Children’s programmes are having on the lives of these children is incredible. To see the smiles on their faces when they read and write and know that they’ll have a better life as a result is amazing. I’m so proud to be an Ambassador for Save the Children and Bulgari – their partnership is making such a big difference to these children’s lives. My visit to India will stay with me forever.” Bulgari and Save the Children have been in partnership since 2009. Together they have raised over $50million globally through the sale of the special Bulgari Save the Children jewellery range including a ring, pendant and new bracelet. The money raised has enabled the delivery of over 100 education programmes in 33 countries, reaching over 1million children.

About SITCA Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts was founded in 1999 by Thai master chef Roongfa Sringam and Martin Amada, an American media producer and food entrepreneur. The two met while working in the island’s hospitality industry. SITCA’s hands-on cooking classes for visitors to the island were an instant hit. Soon after, with the ever growing popularity of Thai food growing worldwide, there came a demand for hands-on intensive training for cooks and chefs who wanted to delve more deeply into the cuisine. To accommodate this, SITCA developed a unique curriculum designed for foreign culinary professionals and keen amateurs.

5. Move above surface of pan, so trail of egg flows onto it and sets in threads. Quickly repeat, moving in another direction directly over threads. Repeat until there are 4 crisscrossing layers of egg. Transfer nest to absorbent kitchen paper. Repeat with remaining egg to make more nests. 6. Place nests with flat side facing downwards. Place 2 strips of chili to form a cross on each nest. Top with coriander leaves, then add about 1 tsp. or 2 tsp. of pork mixture. Fold nests over filling, turn over and arrange on serving plate. 7. just out ARRIVAL Amy Adams, Forest Whitaker, Jeremy Renner

If you need a deeply thoughtful, and a new take on an old genre then Denis Villeneuve is your man. The director gave us drug-war thriller Sicario, and before that he turned the kidnap drama on its head with Prisoners. Now we get his take on alien invasion but makes the whole movie seem like something new even though it has been done countless times previously. The plot is straightforward enough - planet earth is thrown into chaos when 12 mysterious space crafts appear around the world. Their inhabitants want to talk, so it’s up to linguistics professor Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) to try to decipher their language before panic turns into inter-species war. They have something to say, and the race to figure out what it is gives the film its momentum. Without a single planetary leader to be taken to on our divided world, the

just out JOHN WICK: CHAPTER TWO KEANU REEVES

Keanu Reeves has played many characters since having large success with The Matrix trilogy a decade ago and it’s probably fair to say he didn’t expect John Wick to be the one to stick around. When the hitman first showed up in the self-titled 2014 film, it seemed to be just another entry in the recent cycle of unoriginal action movies. On the surface, John Wick seemed the same old same old about an assassin called out of a peaceful retirement when he loses something near and dear to him. But from the off it was head and shoulders above the competition, with a slick, seriously stylish swagger. It did well enough to warrant a second go-round. The title Chapter 2 indicates that it’s part of a larger work the normal route is to follow the path of the first movie. For a while, that’s where this seems to be going, only this dog is different.

aliens have suspended themselves over a dozen points around its surface. But why 12 exactly? And why those specific locations? While the Chinese and Russians look to provoke a war, the Americans put a linguist on the case. Arrival is a beautifully polished story whose emotional heft lifts it above a lot of sub standard films in this genre.. And like all the best sci-fi, it has something to say about today’s world; particularly about the importance of communication. Arrival kept me thinking for hours after watching, the performances are supurb and I can see it cleaning up at this year's Oscars.

Against his will, bound by a blood debt to gangster Santino, Wick winds up in Italy and the game dramatically changes. After a fun montage where Wick suits up and tools up, the film begins to move away from any thoughts of a retread. Also any thoughts of skimping on the action is not an issue here. The director Chad Stahelski, crafts a succession of stunning slaughter scenes as the plot kicks in and Wick finds himself dealing with some of the world’s best assassins. And when the brutality threatens to overwhelm, the movie leaves you with with traces of sly humour. You’ll smile at Laurence Fishburne’s knowing cameo, making this a Matrix reunion. Overall a solid, funny action packed sequel and I'm already looking forward to Chapter 3.

just out ROgUE ONE: A star wars story FELICITY JONES, BEN MANDELSOhN, FORREST WHITTAKER

It takes a pair to release a Star Wars prequel at this point. As George Lucas learned, hitting fans’ nostalgia circuits will only get you so far: you also have to deliver an experience that feels fresh.

and earnest: for the first time in the franchise, it feels like anyone is expendable. At points the gloom threatens to take over a bit and you can find yourself pining for a bit of Han Solo and the gang.

Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One walks this tightrope with ease. There are plenty of callbacks to please Star Wars fans , but also a slew of new characters, first-rate visuals and a truly incredible third act. The pitch is simple enough: a World War II Men-On-A-Mission movie, rejigged for the Star Wars universe. Instead of a pack of army grunts, the heroes that comprise this suicide squad are a bunch of assorted underdogs from throughout the galaxy. Future Star Wars ‘stories’, such as the forthcoming Han Solo spin-off, will doubtless be lighter than the main Episodes where as Rogue One ramps up the stress-levels.

The most crowd pleasing stuff, however, comes courtesy of the villains. Mendelsohn is gloriously hissable as white-caped Orson Krennic. But the after movie chatter will be all about the return of two characters: Darth Vader and another iconic original-trilogy baddie, resurrected via CGI. The Dark Lord of the Sith’s appearance is the more impactful, though, undoubtedly contributing a couple of entries to future Best Vader Moments lists.

There is a comedy robot, lumbering tinhead K-2S0, but his wisecracks are subdued, fuelled by sarcasm. Rogue One is dark

just out GOLD MATTHEW Mcconaughey, EDGAR RAMIREZ

Actors with something to prove usually have two ways to do it: getting paid peanuts to work on a European Indie movie, or changing up how often they hit the fridge. The comeback from the rom com era of Matthew Mcconaughey consolidated by his getting skinny for Dallas Buyers’ Club; now the actor here gains 45 pounds and shaves his head. While it’s initially shocking to see one of the most handsome men breathing looking like a sweaty uncle - it is for the most part a totally futile effort. Which is a shame, as Gold sounds so strong on paper. This is a Mcconaughey's vehicle through-and-through. The director Stephen Gaghan who has given us thrillers like Traffic and Syriana feels like merely a gun-for-hire. This means that instead of going behind the murkiness of the International Precious Metal Trade – we instead get a gawp at the wonder of Mcconaughey's acting.

Although like The Force Awakens it can seem like it is trying to reference the previous movies a bit too much and is better when it stands alone from this. The third act is a action packed triumph and just simply wets your appetite for Episode VIII in December.

The story is interesting enough. Struggling miner Kenny Wells (Matthew Mcconaughey) finally makes a fortune with a gold find in Indonesia he mines with the help of Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramirez). But can he keep it? As his good-old-boy-done-right makes his way up the rungs of the gold world, Mcconaughey's gut and the daddy issues that sustain it keep getting in the way of more interesting material. Sometimes I find it trying to be a Wolf of Wall Street too much - that said, we don't really get a play-by-play look at how the whole thing works. Instead, we get the Mcconaughey show, and every scene is about his performance and little else to be fair. Overall I see this movie as a missed opportunity and it could easily have been better.
