T
he success of the revived Orient-Express train service in Europe, the Venice SimplonOrient-Express, operating between London,
Europe, has shown that for many people train travel has a special romance, tinged with nostalgia from a by-gone age. The atmosphere harks back one hundred years to a Colonial age of rattan chairs on the veranda, linen suits, tea dances…. and the Eastern & Oriental Express is no exception……… The routes and destinations visited on South-East Asia’s E&O aptly named The Chronicles of South-East Asia, are devised to give passengers maximum enjoyment and convenience, with the cuisine and service on board of the highest standards allowing guests to sit back, unwind and take in the intricate interiors and lush exteriors that play through the windows on a journey of excitement and adventure.
46
One Coast Magazine
The same team, who had worked on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, created the interiors of the Eastern & Oriental Express. In the dining cars, windows were extended to give panoramic views and in the sleeping carriages, they were moved to accommodate the new compartment layouts giving space and comfort
For the curved ceilings of the carriage interiors, laminates of very thin plywood were pressureformed and the carriage walls well insulated to help whilst carriage exteriors are painted in ‘British racing green’ with a beige stripe, white roof, brass lettering and crest – reminiscent of years past.
One Coast Magazine
47
The inspiration for the interiors has come from the East with the interior walls of the carriages decorated with veneers of wooden marquetry encouraging a warm hue that is both inviting and rich in texture. Restaurant cars are adorned with Chinese and Thai lacquer, a further one boasting Malaysian motifs, as well as a bar car with Thai wall carvings and engraved mirrors all encapsulating the very essence of the countries through which the train glides….
The open-deck of the observation car at the rear of the train has an Oriental theme dotted with soft furnishings, imports from Paris and other materials sourced from within the region, relaying an authentic tryst in time. From 3 nights to 6, and with choices of journey from the Classic Route from Singapore to Bangkok, to Epic Thailand, Fables of the Hills to Tales of Laos where the train allows you to discover the hidden beauty of Thailand and Laos, travelling from and returning to Bangkok, passengers can also select from three types of sleeping compartment - Presidential, State and Pullman - all with en suite WC and shower facilities…and of course a 24 hour uniformed steward for all your travelling needs. The Eastern & Oriental Express is the ultimate centrepiece of a visit to South East Asia and is the most exotic train journey in the world. The style and splendour of the E&O, with its elegant compartments, delicious cuisine and superb service, combined with the adventure of a journey through the heart of Asia, provides a unique travel experience. t the March 2014 Geneva Salon, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveiled Ghost Series II to the world. Ghost Series II delivers the latest industry-leading technology from Rolls-Royce clad in a subtle re-design. It exudes the timeless yet cool, modern luxury that the car’s customers – the Captains of Industry, entrepreneurs and successful business men and women who are the wealth and job creators in our economies – demand. The launch of Ghost Series II consolidates Ghost’s position as the most popular car in the €200,000+ class, and as a cornerstone of Rolls-Royce’s continuing success. On unveiling Ghost Series II to a packed hall in Geneva’s Palexpo, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Torsten Müller-Ötvös said, “The Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II is the ultimate entrepreneur’s business tool. Following the worldwide success of its predecessor, I am confident that this re-designed and updated Rolls-Royce will continue to attract increasing numbers of new customers to the marque, in particular business entrepreneurs seeking an oasis of calm in a frenetic business world.”
Ghost Series II – design evolved Protecting the popularity of Ghost’s iconic design whilst delivering the latest Rolls-Royce technology to its exacting customers, the subtle re-design of Ghost Series II begins from the front. Re-sculpted LED headlights encircled by daytime running lights lend Ghost Series II a more dynamic visual signature and blend perfectly with revised surface treatments to the front of the car. A tapered ‘wake channel’ on the bonnet, emanating from the Spirit of Ecstasy, evokes the sight of a jet’s vapour trail or wake of a fast luxury yacht and hints at the car’s dynamism. Subtle re-sculpting of Ghost’s bumpers creates a stronger stance and a sense of extra width and height, whilst the contemporary aesthetic is further enhanced with the addition of chrome inserts to the front air intakes, which now feed more air cooling to the front brakes. In addition, the famous waft line has been re-designed on Ghost Series II to lean further forwards emphasising the car’s effortless dynamism.
“As a design statement, the Rolls Royce Ghost II continues to transcend time”

One Coast Magazine
“As a design statement, Rolls Royce Ghost Series II continues to transcend time,” comments Giles Taylor, Director of Design for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “This is ensured by the deft treatment of features such as the new headlights, the new wake channel on the bonnet and surfacing that lend the car a more dynamic, purposeful stance and hint at the cutting edge technology inside. I am very pleased with the overall sense of design harmony.” Inside, Ghost Series II delivers on its outward appearance. The ultimate contemporary combination of luxury, technology and connectivity available to the successful entrepreneur on the move today, Ghost Series II’s onboard technology ensures it is an oasis of calm in a busy, connected world where he or she can do business in peace. Its suite of technologies ensures that both business and leisure time in the car are a super-luxurious effortless experience. On-board Wi-Fi makes Ghost Series II the most connected, luxurious place in which to conduct business on the move, whilst Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT), debuted in Wraith last year, enhances the car’s dynamism – ensuring the car automatically adapts to its surroundings augmenting the drive experience. Updates to navigation systems and the car/ user interface ensures accessing Ghost’s features remains an effortless experience, whilst optional Bespoke Audio – the most exhaustively engineered and finest audio system in automotive history – brings new levels of aural satisfaction to passengers.

Wonderland
(Noun)
1. A land or place full of wonderful things The Wonderland team made up of five ‘Playmates’ have created a vibrant space that promotes the arts and inspires the creative soul in a playful and enchanting atmosphere… and beyond its red walls lie endless possibilities. The vision of the five 5 playmates was simple; to create a flexible "Wonderland" as a backdrop for their own events and for others who dare to use the space for their own adventures. It is an oasis of dreams once lost along with new beginnings and vibrant imagination located in Phuket, Thailand. Nestled in the heart of old Phuket town, Wonderland provides the perfect canvas on which you are free to create. A selection of flexible spaces ideal for launches, press-events, showcases, private dinner parties and any of life's special moments worth celebrating. When you hire their spaces, the Wonderland playmates will take care of everything else - the chefs, the service, flowers, menus and drinks as well as entertainment to ensure a truly memorable experience. Alternatively you can feel free to showcase your own party planning talents by doing it all yourself, the choice is yours.
When not offering their venue for your own devices, Wonderland is predominantly a cocktail bar, playing host to all things liquid and aim to create an ‘experience’ far above anything you have had the pleasure of before. An intriguing and extensive cocktail list, using only the finest of ingredients and tipples, coupled with their talented mixologists, you would be hard pressed to find a more unique place to whet your whistle. With an element of surprise in everything they do, their food menu changes nightly and you seldom find the same dishes on offer – instead – Wonderland work on wit and whimsy, and conjure up new dishes, new drinks and new events to wow you with every visit. For those looking for something more constant, a Thai tasters menu is available daily, but why stop at ordinary when you can delight your taste buds with the Playmates culinary imagination? Hopelessly idealistic and impractically romantic as they may be, Wonderland asks that you let them sweep you up and take you on a journey and help you remember the essence of true joy…which is the connection between one another.

he first Nadimos was founded in 2009 by Mr.Khatter and Mr.Richard Al Ghoul who had been living in Thailand for some time and were craving the authenticity of their native food‌. the solution open a small restaurant in Bangkok where they could enjoy real Lebanese fare with their family and friends.
Walking in to Nadimos, you are not immediately surrounded by the usual adornments of a Lebanese restaurant, instead you are captivated by the open-air beauty looking over a vast pool that feels as if it joins the sea behind it. It is only when your nose captures the enchanting smells of the kitchen do you find yourself taken to Lebanon. The nose never lies.
Soon this small place which started as an intimate hangout became a culinary destination attracting locals, residents and tourists and in 2010/2011 Nadimos was awarded Best Lebanese Restaurant in Bangkok, gaining a much earned reputation serving outstanding Lebanese dishes time and time again. In the years to follow, Nadimos opened a second restaurant in Bangkok and then finally set their sights on the shores of Samui and found a home at Prana Resort, directly on the beach in a prime location.
Unlike others, Nadimos offers Lebanese dishes prepared by their Lebanese Chef, with ingredients mostly imported from Lebanon to preserve the original flavour of every single morsel.

focusabout him
Mentor, maestro and master of his craft, multi-disciplined artist and founder of Cera Khanchai Wirattanakul sheds blending design and culture commercial success and staying humble. of ‘design’ through watching artisans in my hometown, creating traditional handicrafts and carving wood. I was inspired by the ability to create and be creative, and always wanted to get involved. I started with basic woodwork and then pursued an apprenticeship in carpentry. From there I took a great interest in the nature of the materials; textures, tones and slowly learned to understand how to control and make full use of the natural properties of each medium.
Of course the foundation of my work will always be rooted in the traditions of Thai culture. Yet through exploration of techniques and blending organic freedom with a natural disbetween contemporary commercialism whilst echoing traditional cultural beauty.
Wow, I wouldn’t call myself a mentor but I do conduct workshops in many universities around Thailand. I like to see kids being creative and help them to understand the freedom of doing your own thing, while at the same time recognising and nurturing up-coming talent. Interacting with students gives me a renewed sense of purpose about my work. I guess it takes me back to when I was younger and more inquisitive.
Interesting question. Actually I don’t have a favourite discipline or material believe it or not. I like the idea of embracing the against the solid base of a hardwood trunk Each requires a different approach - and each equally enjoyable.
My original vision of Cera was a simple shop to make a living. To sell my work and showcase my art, a place to see clients smile and a base from which to hone my craft. After more than 10 years i’m grateful that people continue to appreciate my vision.
The project was launched a few months ago. It’s a modest development comprising a few ‘concept’ houses. embracing traditional ideas with contemporary aesthetics to try and build a community of like-minded people in one place. Hopefully more of the same. Katarina BonĂŠr
talks fondly of family, travel and her passion for fashion.
"
I always use the element of faith, religion, spiritualism or belief and incorporate prints, symbols or hardware to make it complete
"
focusabout her What is your earliest memory of fashion and falling in love with it? My mum had like a walk-in-closet, but it was mostly used as a storage room. However in there was a box where she kept memories from her youth (I think when she was about 19 years) when she was working one year in Paris. There were some of Mary Quant prints and YSL dresses, Chanel and the all the brands that are classic French haute couture. I loved it, and I could spend hours in there alone! Also she had a very beautiful large brown tote with apple green leather lining, and I remember my mum would let me use it but I was not allowed to put anything bulky inside as it could alter the shape of the bag; I found that concept fascinating!
where did it all begin? I honestly don’t have a long background to impress with, I am more of an adventurer and entrepreneur that is in my 3rd carreer now, as various life situations has offered different opporafter which I met my husband. He was an hotelier, so I became es and did Champagne testings with our guests besides being the GM of our Relais & Chateau hotel Krägga Herrgård (www. kragga.se). After we sold it 6 years ago we wanted to move to a tropical climate and upon arriving to Phuket we were so happy to have schools and friends around we decided to stay. But of course I soon discovered there was always a lack of something to wear, swim and otherwise. A friend visiting from Sweden introduced me to Eric, the owner of swimwear factories in China and Vietnam and also the licensor of Sunseeker Australia. Soon after we started working together. We launched in 11 depart-
Where do you draw your inspiration for your collections? I try to identify four different groups and create 3-4 variations in the groups. I always use the element of faith/religion/spiritualism/belief and incorporate prints, symbols or hardware to make it complete. The idea is that all beliefs are about the same thing, loveknot, the dharma wheel, a scarab, yin & yang, the David-star,
Then I have other groups like something worldly with ethnic graphic can be another or retro with some elements of humour. It is always something personal, but it also needs to be commercial of course.
What is your favourite all time fashion must-have? I’m not different than any other woman, so it must be a purse! From any of the big fashionhouses, funnily enough I have a LV but I never like to use it. Don’t like the logo on it… Maybe I should get the no logo purse from them, because they do make some beautiful ones. And I do love everything that Diane von Furstenberg makes, the DVF brand is the most avant garde and cool I can imagine, and so feminine and wearable at the same time!
Did you ever wear something and then later on look Yes!!! I totally have the “bad wear” days where I must have woken up in the wrong side of the brain… Happens a lot, so I cannot mention just one!
What do you consider your biggest achievement so far along your travels? That has to be having children and raising them! Our two children are now 11 and 9 and have lived here in Thailand longer than in Sweden, so they are really becoming “world citizens” with very different upbringings than my own. They are bright, caring, optimistic, brave and curious; what more can you ask for? I hope I will not ruin them by asking them to be something they ed to our own reality, lack of time or patience, and might give them feedback in the wrong direction, hopefully not too often though… I always worry that I am not a good enough parent.
style. hat’s yours? I am not into trends really. I need it too be comfortable, more than anything. I am more conservative than many of the design I make. I prefer plain, I like earthy, and love blue color tones; any from light blue to turquoise, pewter, indigo, midnight, cobalt or navy…Saying that I also like to add a surprise, like a contrast color or a hat, earrings or shoes that mismatches or adds something fun or unexpected.
What does the future hold for you? I have some great plans for the future but cannot share them just yet… Anyway our brand is growing some recognition from abroad and we are looking to expand our export, so I travel quite a lot to put this together. Of course there is plenty of competition out there, so not easy to get attention, but so far so good! In terms of our brand we are looking to expand more versatility in coverups, so we are adding more matching printed and solid coverups to match back to each group. And also adding items like hope to have some time to enjoy tropical living and take care of my family and health, after all it is the only thing that really matters. www.katalinacollection.com One Coast Magazine

Soi Dogs aim is to set an example for the Asian region on how to humanely reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats through spaying and neutering, and to better the lives and living conditions of the stray dogs and feral cats of Asia. Desexing (Sterilization) has been proven to be the most effective way to help the animals and in January 2014, Soi Dog reached an incredible milestone of over 60,203 dogs and cats sterilized! The shelter and rehoming center, located in Phuket, houses over 300 dogs and cats at any one time that have been abandoned or abused and subjected to sometimes terrible cruelty. The shelter itself is a large open-air complex with countless individual ‘pens’ that are now home to these incredible characters. Custom built with plenty of space to roam and enjoy, as well as each containing wooden structures and toys and are encouraged to play and socialize - the dogs are truly taken care of during their stay be it temporary or for life.

Not forgetting the sponsors, supporters and adoptees including international ambassadors like TV and Movie star Ricky Gervais, singers and actresses GemmaAshley, Dena and Ariel Kaplan, actress Joanna Lumley, actress Penelope Wilton and, actor Peter Egan amongst others – who, without their help Soi Dog would not be able to feed and help many of the sick and injured. The most recent push from Soi Dog is to stop the inhumane, cruel and unnecessary meat-trade around Asia and with active campaigning in late 2011 more arrests of smugglers have occurred than during anytime in the past. With over 1000 dogs saved in 2011, the Royal Thai Police and Royal Thai Navy aided by Soi Dog’s undercover investigators have made over further 40 arrests. Soi Dog along with other animal welfare groups have presented draft legislation to the Thai Parliament for strong animal welfare laws to be enacted. We can only hope that things soon change.
If you would like to join Soi Dog and support their tireless work… you can easily become a sponsor of a dog or cat, or be a local or international volunteer or even better you can give a dog or cat a forever home!
