Robert Wun’s avant-garde

philosophy Today, avant-garde fashion is gaining ground like never before thanks to several maverick designers. They are designing incredibly high-powered dresses that shed light on a whole new way to dress. Most importantly, these designers who think out of the box know that their eccentric creations must be wearable too. It’s no surprise that the craze for it is skyrocketing because people love these bizarre outfits. So bringing us closer to the grandeur of this extreme yet exciting fashion in luxury is a Hong Kong-born London-based designer Robert Wun. He is a master at incorporating extremes from two different spheres of life mainly nature and artificial world as he says they give an all-out feel to his work.

Rocking daywear collection for today's

modern women

For quite some time, Alber Elbaz was onto doing something unexpected that would stun the fashion fraternity. Yes, he announced his departure from Lanvin after serving the oldest French couture house with his boundless creativity for 14 years. But before his leaving, he wanted to leave an indelible mark on the fashion industry and he did it with his SS16 collection for Lanvin just like he had hoped for inspired by Lanvin’s photo exhibition titled “Manifesto”. He looked back at thousands of toiles from his past work at Lanvin in order to put together this great work of art. While going through the massive treasure box, he realized that toiles show the handiwork and the human touch on the body, the truth of the métier - the intuition, the emotion and the dream. “That’s how the idea of doing a collection solely inspired by it came to me. I wanted to rediscover the beauty and the importance of the design process more than just perfectly finished clothes on the runway,” Elbaz says. He wanted to make the collection fit for everybody as part of modern daywear for today’s women. “I simply wanted body dresses rather than anything else. I just aspired to focus on elevating the notion of extreme femininity. It’s all about celebrating the ultra femininity in all forms and shapes in explosion of colors and satin bow decorations.”

Let your lips, eyes and face sparkle...

W

hen two big players come together to create a new product, the end result is always fulfilling. So is the case with a widely popular fashion house and a beauty brand Estée Lauder and Courrèges after their joint venture gave birth to a “poptimistic” limited edition makeup collection. It's simply based on the formula of zero-gravity shades that draw on a shared point of view on color, beauty and the resolution to never stop moving forward. changing the world through invention has always been the driving force at Courrèges and we feel that they have found a like-minded partner in Estée Lauder. Both brands share a vision of tomorrow’s modern woman today. It’s a 13-piece limited edition line that marries the floating-on-air feeling of an embellished Courrèges mini dress, and the punched-up precision of Estée Lauder’s progressive product design, seen through the Courrèges lens. The formulations were designed to be surprising in their lightness, in their sensorial delivery, their translucency, reflectivity, and in their pop-y palette. They are an invitation to have fun with color, texture and special effects while defying the confines of nostalgia by creating a look that is wholly of today. Courrèges has always been admired for pushing the boundaries of fashion and beauty. Their collaboration recognizes Courrèges' philosophy of pop luxury – bringing a sense of surprise, fun and optimism to the world of beauty.

Making a Splash in the Desert words by Stuart Langrish Considering the harsh environment of a country mostly covered in desert, it might seem strange that it’s also home to some of the top-rated waterparks in the world. Though water is sparse in some parts, in others its aquatic entertainment attracts millions of visitors each year. Keen to enjoy the year-round sunshine, the parks have something for everyone, from record-breaking thrill rides for adrenaline junkies to poolside loungers and lazy rivers for those who like to take things a little easier. Swapping sand dunes for speedos, One Coast Magazine courageously dived into the best waterparks the UAE has to offer.

Yas Waterworld, Abu Dhabi Offering some much-needed respite from the blazing Middle East sun, the newest and only Emirati-themed waterpark in the world, Yas Waterworld is inspired by the UAE’s rich heritage of pearl diving through its unique story of ‘The Legend of the Lost Pearl’. Sitting atop Jebel Dana, the towering core of the park’s altitude-defying summit and measuring eight metres in diameter, the park’s gigantic pearl is Yas Island’s newest landmark. As the UAE’s first mega waterpark, it is home to more rides, slides and attractions than any other waterpark in the Middle East, 45 in all – five of which can be found nowhere else in the world. With rides and experiences on offer to thrill both the young and the young at heart, the waterpark plays host to Dawwama – the world’s first six-person hydro-magnetic tornado waterslide, at 238 metres of adrenaline-fueled fun, and a second, Falcon’s Falaj, that’s over 300m long. The Bandit Bomber, a 550–metre suspended rollercoaster, is the

first with on-board water and laser effects. Riders can shoot jets of water at targets, drop water bombs and trigger special effects, while people below can spray them with water as they pass. Slither’s Slides features a maze of slides and tunnels with spectacular special effects where single or double-tube riders can select six different themes on six slides for 30 distinct experiences. Bubble’s Barrel is the world's largest surfable sheet wave, which features a 3-metre high wave and 1,250 pumps pushing 7,000 litres per second. The smaller Rush Rider is designed for those new to flowboarding and surfing. Younger children are not forgotten at Marah Fortress, where smaller slides and special children’s play areas mean they can still enjoy all the fun of a waterpark away from the fast-paced action of the adults. While for those seeking a slower pace, the lazy Al Raha River is a safe way to enjoy the park from ground level. www.yaswaterworld.com

Aquaventure, Dubai Voted the best waterpark in the Middle East, and the fifth best in the world according to TripAdvisor, awe inspiring water rides, a record breaking zipline circuit and non-stop water play are the signature elements of Aquaventure Waterpark. Encompassing 17 beachfront hectares along the apex of The Palm’s crescent, and two enormous towers packed with rides, it has been designed specifically to add a new level of extreme excitement to every visit, and is an ideal family attraction, offering rides and slides to accommodate every age and adventure level. Defined by its striking twin towers, the Mesopotamian-styled Tower of Neptune reaches 30 metres into the sky and is visible from the fronds of The Palm as well as from Dubai’s mainland. It contains seven heart-pumping rides including The Leap of Faith, one of the tallest, fastest free fall slides in the entire Middle East. Only for the brave, its 27.5m near-vertical drops riders nine stories straight down into a transparent tunnel and through a shark-infested lagoon. The daring Tower of Poseidon is Aquaventure’s newest attraction, and filled with record breaking rides, including Aquaconda, the world’s largest waterslide, Slitherine, the world’s first dual waterslide within a waterslide, the UAE’s only dual racing loops and Atlantean Flyers, the longest zipline in the Middle East. Poseidon’s Revenge offers the most extreme thrills with two trapdoors, a terrifying 20 metre drop and the first duel racing loops in the world. Rising from the Arabian Gulf, the waterpark contains 18 million litres of fresh water used to power eleven thrilling waterslides and 2.3km of River Rides with tidal waves and pools, water rapids and white water chargers. Using the latest technology, the waterpark uses over 750,000 litres per minute to create water surges and waves with swells reaching almost 1 metre high. Guests are propelled through the lushly landscaped waterscape on a river loop called The Rapids, never having to leave their inner tubes as innovative water escalators carry participants up slide towers and down through rapids. www.atlantisthepalm.com/marine-water-park/aquaventure-waterpark

Wild Wadi, Dubai Situated between Burj Al Arab and the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Dubai’s original waterpark,Wild Wadi has been thrilling visitors since 1999. Not content with the typical thrills of regular slides and pools, the creators built a 12-acre water wonderland that boasts a staggering array of top of the range rides, pools and facilities. Amazingly, many of the rides and slides are interconnected by pools and water roller coasters which catapult riders to where they want to go next – so you can forget all about stairs and long queues! The jewel in the crown of Wild Wadi has long since been the Jumeirah Sceirah – an exhilarating 395ft-long tandem slide that sees riders hit speeds of 80km/h and experience weightlessness when dropped through a trap door 100 feet into the valley below. There are also a number of raft-based slides at the park, with the heart-thumping Tantrum Alley, which sees four-person rafts hurtle down steep waterslides, appearing to come perilously close to the open edges, before cascading into the water pool below. The new rides are the first in the world to push thrill seekers to the limit through the incorporation of three funnels. Experience the eight Master Blasters unique gravity-defying water rollercoaster rides that rocket guests up to 15 metres above ground level including the ominous looking Tunnel of Doom that takes you twisting and turning through underground tunnels before emerging into the sunlight. Those who prefer to relax will like Juha’s Journey, a 360-meter long lazy river that treats guests to a more leisurely pace and a respite from the action-packed rides above. With over 100 water activities including 5 slides, a pair of racing slides, and water guns, Juha’s Dhow and Lagoon has been especially designed with little ones in mind. Families will have hours of fun with Juha and his magic carpet-surfing friend Sinbad who feature on the Dhow, though beware of the large dumping bucket that will soak the guests below it every 2 minutes! www.jumeirah.com/en/hotels-resorts/dubai/wild-wadi

Wadi Adventure, Al Ain If you’ve ever imagined surfing in the desert head for Wadi Adventure, where, like most things in the UAE, imagination has become a reality. For what it lacks in rides it makes up for in extreme watersports action, as the Middle East’s first man-made white-water rafting, kayaking and surfing facility built in the foothills of the majestic Jebel Hafeet, near Al Ain. Known for its extensive natural cave system and hot water springs, Jebel Hafeet has long been a tourist attraction for the region. Wadi Adventure has now added another reason to visit this spectacular part of the UAE. Having opened in 2012, Surfing Magazine recently voted Wadi Adventure’s surf pool on to its ‘50 Favourite Surfing Sites’ list. The magazine ranks the pool - the only man-made attraction on the list - as the 41st best surfing beach in the world, even though it has artificially created waves. The park’s 3.3 metre man-made surf wave is the world’s largest and its 1.7 kilometre kayaking channel network is the world’s longest. Bringing together water and adrenaline-filled adventure, Wadi Adventure makes a great day out for water sports enthusiasts and families. Lessons are provided by certified trainers for all levels of competency; guests can bring their own equipment, rent or buy gear from the resort’s shop. www.wadiadventure.ae

How you Show Up,

Matters More Than What You Think!

W

e understand ourselves, especially in the west, as living beings mainly from the neck up and not as a body(mind) that thinks. Even our language hints to this separation of mind, from body. Two common sentences we often hear in general discussion, show how language is used to create separation between mind and body. For example, "athletes are prepared both physically and mentally,” and, “There’s nothing wrong with your body-it's all in your mind”. Both these sentences suggest that mind and body are separate, and should be treated as such.

The mind body split, is nothing new, although we mostly take for granted that intelligence is a function of thinking, nothing more, nothing less. The mind-body split began back in the 17th century when the famous French philosopher René Descartes declared that any body (i.e., anything made of matter) is extended in space; but, he said, the mind has no extension in space. Matter or body, then, is “extended stuff” while mind is “thinking stuff” or “feeling stuff.” The mind, in other words, is what thinks and feels. This distinction is important and makes a lot of sense. However, Descartes didn’t just make a distinction between mind and body, he said they were also separate existing in different domains of reality. He split them apart. And that’s where the problems set in. Descartes’ mind body split made a big impact in western philosophy, modern science and society in general. For example, science tends to focus almost exclusively on gaining knowledge about the physical world, the world of matter (bodies extended in space). It completely ignored the nonphysical domain of mind and consciousness. In fact, science went even further, and claimed that the only reality that existed was physical stuff matter. Mind was assumed to be some kind of by product arising out of complex interactions between brain cells.

46

O N E CO A S T

body&mindmindful lifestyle More and more people are realizing that the mind body split was artificial to begin with. It never really existed (except in the ideas of philosophers and scientists). Others, such as artists, dancers, and master martial artists have always known that mind and body are like two sides of a coininseparable. They always work together, enhancing each other. And when they work against each other, the result is poor performance, poor health, and dare I say it, depression. That’s why when we talk about performing at our best, be that in our organizations, or simply on a personal level, it is important to recognize the intimate connection between mind and body. Yes, they are obviously distinct and different: mind is that part of us that thinks and feels and chooses. It does not exist in space. It is non-physical. Matter or body, on the other hand, is our “bulk,” the part of us that is physical and takes up space. However, even though mind and body are distinct, they are never separate. Think of the two sides of a coin: heads and tails are distinct and different, but you can’t separate them. That’s how it is with mind and body. They are different but always go together. Knowing and honoring this will allow a person to understand and experience how what goes on in their mind affects how their body performs, but equally what and how you they use their body affects their mind.

With this in mind, now try a different exercise: Stand up, pull your shoulders back, stand strong, gently clench both your fists. How do you feel? You feel different right? You feel more confident, more in control, more centered. Bottom line: Body attitude has a definite and clear effect on how the mind will respond in the moment. Maybe at this point you are thinking this sounds interesting, even important, but you need more convincing?

Let’s look at some research!

For example, scientists have discovered that some really very simple gestures, such as how you shape your mouth, can affect your mental attitude. You can practice a simple exercise easily at home to demonstrate this. Put your face into a smile by turning the edges of your mouth upward. Immediately and automatically, this has an effect on the brain chemicals that make you feel good. This is based on scientific evidence that a particular body posture in this case, the way the mouth is shaped—has an effect on the chemicals produced in the brain, which then affect how the mind responds. This is a simple, but very effective, way to show how body attitude and your state of mind are intimately related. Take another example of body posture: if you are sitting slumped or even standing slumped more than likely that will send a message to the brain that you’re feeling it's dejected and maybe even depressed. Again, this emphasizes how body posture and mind affect each other. In other words, how you hold your body, not only changes your physiology, it also changes how you think and feel about yourself. How you show up in the world then, matters more than you ‘think’.

A study by Brian, Petty and Wagner published in the European Journal of Social Psychology examined the ways posture influences our selfconfidence. When job applicants were sitting up straight, they filled out a mock application that asked them to list their strengths and weaknesses that would be pertinent to the job. Then they were asked to rate themselves. A second group of applicants were asked to sit slumped over and complete the same application. The applicants who were slumped over had lower self-confidence as expressed by their answers than those who were sitting up straight. In another study, researchers Shubert and Koole, discovered that a person’s self-esteem was heightened by the simple act of making a fist.As the body adopted a protective stance, the mind felt better able to focus on the problem at hand. So there you have it, the research backs it up. Change they way you engage with your body, and you change the way you think and feel about yourself. Mind and body after all are not separate but one.

PR is a ‘people person’ business that requires an outgoing personality, self-confidence and an understanding of human psychology. Using Facebook is part of my job description and importantly, since I’m the Group Director of PR and Marketing Communications of Fico Group, I use it for the main purpose of creating brand awareness, increasing my database(mostly locals), developing awareness of the company and its affiliated brands. Khun Vachini, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us at One Coast Magazine and let our readers peek into your busy life. Would you tell us a little about your life and family? As a young girl, I was a girl lacking self-confidence, insecure and introvert. I believe that I’ve transformed from a “shy ugly duckling” to a “social swan” who now carries herself with utmost style, poise and grace. The fact that I studied and lived in the USA for over 10 years apparently helped change me from the girl I was to the woman I am today, but the biggest part my transformation essentially came from within, born to a loving, caring, confident, independent, positive, and intellectual woman with strong self-respect. Having a strong self-respect helps me fulfill my potential, develop healthy relationships, and make everyone around me see me as a person worthy of respect.

Life is so short, I have to make the best of everyday let alone living for the future.

What do you do for hobbies or in your free time? My passion for water sports such as slalom water skiing, wakeboarding and surfing stems from my love of being in the sun and water. It’s about having a sense of freedom and feeling more alive. But more than that, I believe that in general one should always look after one’s self: spiritually, mentally and physically to achieve a healthy body, mind and spirit. I also like Muay Thai and kickboxing, and spending time in the gym. I also like to spend my free time traveling in and outside of Thailand with people that I love or alone. Traveling has broadened my mind and vision. If there was one thing in your life you could go back and change, what would it be? If I had a choice, I would not change one single thing. Realistically speaking, we all can’t change our past or the inevitable, but we are in charge of our attitude, thus it’s how I create my own future and destiny. A positive attitude to me is the most important value in life. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we can embrace each day. Talking to your friends and they say you have an energizing enigma and are great at multitasking! Where does your power and enthusiasm come from? My power and enthusiasm come from having a belief and passion in my job, family, and all that life encompasses. Once I do so, I’ll never be tired again. Nutting it out will lighten burdens and make obstacles easier to overcome. I will have energy to succeed. It will also make me happier. Being a successful Thai woman in Thailand – how much does confidence play a role? I believe in confidence, but not being overconfident. When I feel confident I am able to carry myself well and able to take on any challenge that comes my way. Being proud of myself and that I can do anything. I never compare myself to others or look down upon others or think I am better – just think I am good enough and being the best that I can possibly be.

focusabout him

Roland Bleszynski One Coast meets MontAzure Kamala, Phuket’s MD Roland Bleszynski to find out about his interesting life. Mr. Roland Bleszynski has been working and living in Thailand for over 15 years, and has since called Phuket island “his home”. He was born into an early mixed-race marriage between a Chinese New Zealand mother, and a British Polish father, who immigrated to Canada in the 1960’s after meeting in Hong Kong. A keen interest in art, engineering, architecture and real estate development led Roland to complete his university studies with a Doctorate in Engineering before leaving Toronto to put his passion into practice.

What drew your attention to Phuket in the first place? I grew up in a country that had very long cold winters, but beautiful summers – yearly temperatures ranged from -30°C to +30°C. While studying in Canada, I always had an interest in building design, sustainable practices and technologies at a time when the world was just beginning to become aware and worry about climate change and global warming. I became interested in not just studying building designs, materials and sustainable technologies, but also in finding rare gems of places in the world that will more easily support a long-term sustainable lifestyle. Sustainability not just in an environmental context as it seems to have been reduced to today, but also sustainable from social, economic, infrastructure, cultural and community perspectives. I started to research locations where the positive influences from climate, location, geography and culture would converge. I also looked at other factors ranging from infrastructure, transportation connectivity, energy generation and agriculture, social, political, economic, culture, social values, natural beauty, and accessibility to medical care, education, and opportunity. And Thailand, and notably Phuket, kept floating to the top of the list meeting these significant criteria exquisitely. Besides, Thai culture is so rich, open and inviting. As a developer arriving in Phuket in the early 2000’s, it was an easy decision to make to stay. How did your association with MontAzure happen to arise? I’ve been developing real estate and consulting to developers and investors in Phuket since I arrived via my consulting company Abode Developments Co Ltd. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on many high-end projects in Phuket over the years, and I’ve experienced Phuket mature into the world-class destination it is today. When the chance to work on the great Mont Azure project came my way, I latched on to it to play my part in the development of Phuket. What do you love the most about your job? I love my work and what I do. It’s hard, stressful work, but with it comes a deep sense of satisfaction at the end of each project. I played with Lego as a child, and essentially I continue to do so, but on a life-size scale.

My attraction to being a real estate developer comes from a passion to create projects that enhance one’s life and happiness, access and awareness to beauty. To create architecture and environment that’s beautiful and unique yet also functional and practical – homes that not just serve as shelter to lay your head, but also to act as investment vehicles for greater prosperity. Can you imagine yourself living in another place away from Phuket? I cannot imagine being as happy living anywhere else other than Phuket. How pivotal is the community progress in the entire planning of the resort? As I’ve always lived in Kamala, the MontAzure project has a special interest and responsibility to ensure that the vision of the project further enhances Phuket and the community it supports. In my role as Managing Director, all aspects of the project are guided towards achieving this overall vision of MontAzure. This community must be inclusive for both Thais and foreigners, both tourists and locals – expatriates and Thais. An integrated community must support all stages of life from young children to the retired, as well as foster healthy lifestyles for individuals, couples, families to groups and associations. The design of the community must be respectful and support not only the natural environment where it’s located, but also address the social, political, religious and cultural environments. It’s important to recognize that the main attraction of Phuket to the World is that it is not a city. It is a beautiful tropical island in the clear blue Andaman Sea with a strong connection to nature. People desire to visit here to reconnect with nature while escaping the urban centers usually with a less than forgiving climate. Developers in Phuket should address this desire in their project’s planning and designs. In Phuket, beach clubs tend to evolve into “community centers” where neighbors, locals, guests and tourists congregate. We have five beach clubs and lounges in our plans – all different to host to different tastes in social environment. MontAzure will also offer different residential options at varying price points to serve the larger community’s needs. Hospitality and wellness will also be featured.

What would you say to convince people who might be interested in buying properties here? Location has always been one of the main drivers of real estate value. MontAzure is ideally situated in the middle of Phuket’s sought after west coast. MontAzure’s mountainsides wrap around our valley and beachfront to form an amphitheatre. One mountain shoulder forms the Millionaire’s Mile peninsula, while another mountain shoulder extends north to form the Surin & AmanPuri peninsula. Savvy buyers will recognize that MontAzure’s ideal location enjoys high capital appreciation on top of annual rental yields. There is very little beachfront remaining in Phuket that has not already been developed, mostly as hotels as well. We have very unique offerings to buyers. The Twinpalms Residences MontAzure offers freehold resort residential condos, branded and operated by Phuket’s arguably most successful boutique resort, with financing available for both Thais and foreign buyers. The Estates at MontAzure enjoys a premium location on our mountainside and boasts some of the largest plots available that enhances both privacy and exclusivity. These are customized estates designed to match our buyer’s lifestyle and wishes. The phases we are currently selling have been wellthought out and designed to ensure a unique high quality product from both lifestyle perspective and investment angles – both annual yields and capital appreciation. We ensured freehold ownership for our future neighbors that also allow financing options for both Thais and foreigners. Branded residential tends to yield higher re-sale values, with professional management looking after your assets as well as maximizing rental returns. What leisure activities do you take part in when you are not working? When I’m not working, I’m enjoying married life and learning to be a father to my two lovely children. Phuket is an amazing place to live, work, raise a family, and enjoy life the way it should be. To enjoy the ocean and the beautiful scenery, we have been fortunate to have good friends that invite us on their yachts to experience the amazing waters around Phuket. I’m a big believer in Phuket, its future, and all it has to offer. I’ve always promoted Phuket as an unofficial ambassador to all I meet and will continue to do so.

Sometimes, we can find them in what we eat, in the water we use for drinking and bathing. So what should a client be thinking about when balancing the wellness part of their life? You want the gym in your home to reflect your individuality and to make a bold statement. Fitting it out the way you enjoy working out and creating an ambiance that motivates the user to push them to perform better. “While working with our clients, we make sure they feel motivated and assured that what they envision is possible. We work together with the client and their designer to find equipment that works well in the room and matches the colors that have been chosen says CJ.

In his meetings with potential clients, CJ often shows them pictures of previous projects that have been successful. Savvy owners quickly find new vision and will in turn inspire their designer to work on a concept. Although treadmills, elliptical cross trainers, bikes and multigyms seem to always be the standard choice, many let their imagination run loose and include some of the latest fitness innovations that help to keep the “normal” dynamics at bay. As CJ puts it, “Famous fitness brands like Life Fitness and Octane Fitness have developed smarter versions of Low or No Impact Training machines that move people in a different way. The Octane Zero Runner and Lateral X are both great examples — unique machines that capture the attention

of fitness enthusiasts for cardio training. The Life Fitness GX Bike is not only sexy, but considered the smoothest spinning bike on the market. As a result, this bike sells equally well in the home as it does in the commercial market because of its appeal. Other unique and very beneficial exercise machines come in the form of vibration training with Power Plate. Engineered to activate the body's natural reflexive response to vibration, Power Plate's vibrating platform moves 25 to 50 times per second to engage muscles in a consistent, and controlled manner. As a result, Power Plate is able to accelerate training with high performance results, enabling anyone seeking greater fitness levels to achieve their maximum physical potential faster and more efficiently.

“The accessories have really added new life into functional training workouts and the general public has embraced these new ways of getting fit.”

Bangkok buzzing with fever of divine nourishment!

Cooking delicious foods is a fun task but which requires a great deal of creativity. After all, our day starts with it. We are nurtured by what we eat. So CHI, known as a famous supperclub where people gather and enjoy amazing food along with spectacular entertainment at the table, has gone one step further with its whole new concept of cuisine which it recently unveiled in partnership with Royal Thai cuisine legend, Blue Elephant. Mana, meaning “divine nourishment, is the result of a one year collaboration between the CHI team, culinary school and international restaurant group Blue Elephant (driven by Kim Steppe, son of Master Chef Nooror Somany), and Tony Bish, a New York City-trained chef and teacher at Blue Elephant Phuket.

lifestyledine

Mana : Insane food for an entirely new supperclub experience Mana’s interpretation of “divine nourishment” brings on the table a menu that blends exotic, spiritual and technical influences. Five-spiced duck broth reduction and baby bok choi, pink seabream pan-fried with orange candy and charred fennel, yellow saffron curry paneer with truffled potatoes and popcorn, deconstructed cheesecake and toasted coconut passion fruit tart – with interludes of molecular popping fruits to cleanse the palate between courses.

by a wealth of cocktails created by n the CHI team, in the spirit of CHI, bound in golden crocodile-skin menus.

Mana’s slant on savory alcohol sidekicks include Oscietra caviar, seared foie gras and brioche, or duck beaks for the adventurous, complemented

Set price for the Mana dining menu is 1,800 Baht per person.

Courses consist of Amuse Bouche, Starter, Soup, Entremets, Main and Dessert, with course selections interchangeable between three elemental themes: Fire (meat), Water (seafood) and Earth (vegetable), giving a total of 18 menu combinations. Interestingly, menus will change every three months, fulfilling Chef Tony Bish’s desire to continue to learn, anticipate change and implement new ideas in the spirit of Blue Elephant and CHI.

Beirut

Breathing new life into

words by Mairead Doohan

After more than 30 years of civil war, invasion and occupation Beirut is persuasively reclaiming it’s title; ‘Paris of the Middle East’. It has not been an easy journey for the Lebanese and the rebuild is on-going, but through this tumultuous period the spirit of Beirut has matured and developed. The sense of style, stronger now than ever, has a depth and gravity missing in other Middle Eastern countries. The history of the country itself is uncovered slowly; from the complex ruins concealed below the city’s high-rises to the long-established ottoman balconies hidden in plain sight along meandering back roads. Beyond that, the populace’s commitment to a better future saturates everything; their verve and energy infectious. Still boasting an extraordinarily varied itinerary for visitors, this city brings measure to the phrase ‘something for everyone’. One Coast Magazine spent a long weekend investigating whether the city could truly offer that elusive combination of culture and luxury.

SLEEP

Le Gray

Three-0-Nine Hotel

Stepping into Le Gray’s foyer is reminiscent of entering a design concept art gallery. Individually chosen pieces by Gordon Campbell Gray himself are carefully arranged to compliment the tone and atmosphere of each area. The overall effect, while discrete, is utterly compelling. From sophisticated gadgets to luxurious comfort, no detail has been overlooked in creating a five-star hotel which is so much more than just somewhere to sleep. Visitors and residents alike can indulge in 4 distinct meeting areas starting with the chic informal Gordon’s Café; before moving up to the understated, smoky opulence of the cigar bar; followed by standout cuisine and decadent wine choices in Indigo on the Roof restaurant and finishing with a blast of Beirut’s finest vistas at Bar ThreeSixty. Le Gray’s autonomous status in a city with many five-star resorts is founded on its strong emphasis on using local produce and design. Quality is impeccable: architect Kevin Dash ensures that the flow of light in each room accentuates the clutter free, yet welcoming, design within. Le Gray is the embodiment of all that Beirut is and can be: culturally aware, artistically significant and assiduous in its strive for excellence.

When looking for design centred accommodation, roof-top bars and prime city location, it’s easy to see a significant amount of your budget disappear – especially in Beirut. However there are some clandestine nuggets waiting to be found.Three-0-Nine Hotel is a perfect example, situated in the centre of Hamra, once known as Beirut’s own ChampsÉlysées. Just a few steps from the historic and striking American University, this boutique hotel combines a uniquely designed interior with superb service and modern charm. Rooms show originality in their décor; they’re spacious, clean and most importantly the beds are comfy. Not to be missed, the roof-top bar, though small, has extraordinary views stretching from the corniche to the mountains while taking in all of downtown in between. There is even a karaoke bar available to entertain, should your inner songbird emerge.

EAT Al Falamanki Designed to recreate traditional Lebanese villages, this restaurant is popular amongst backgammon playing locals and curious tourists alike. If you can manage to tear your attention away from the museumrich collection of 1930s-1970s artefacts displayed at Al Falamanki the food will not disappoint. A generous selection of classic and atypical Lebanese dishes, all focusing on flavour and presentation. We were told, ‘in Lebanon you eat first with your eyes’ and in Falamanki they hold strong to this proverb in dazzling accuracy. A piquant display of authentic Lebanese cuisine served in an alluringly genuine location. www.alfalamanki.com Hanna Mitri’s Creamery When it comes to looking for original and authentic dining experiences, venturing off the beaten track is often the most rewarding way to go. Never more so is this apparent than when visiting Hanna Mitri’s creamery in Achrafieh. This overlooked, often forgotten street, yields a true example of an outstanding family run business. Spanning three generations and over 50 years of operation this exceptional confectionary churns out unrivalled ice cream and sorbet. Flavours are seasonal and distinctive using imaginative combinations and ingredients. Stand-out choices include; blood orange sorbet, rich, nutty almond brittle, and an impeccably perfumed rose water offering. Miss it at your peril.

EXCURSIONS Lebanon Tours and Travel Tours can too often be conducted with uncompromising, military precision and school-like lecturing. Visions of matching caps, umbrella’s held aloft and screeching guides come to mind when faced with the prospect of an organised visit.Thankfully for us, with Hussain’s tours, this could not be further from the truth. More akin to visiting the city with a knowledgeable uncle; Hussain is welcoming rather than claustrophobic; exceptionally well-informed but not pushy and genuinely devoted to ensuring each guest receives the best tour to suit them. When we decided to change our tour at the last minute he was understanding and immediately set about offering previously un-thought-of alternatives, non-withstanding the additional effort that it may cause him. Of the many notable places to visit a few stand out: Byblos – More so than many popular ruins sites, Byblos is an entire city saturated with history. An unexpected surprise, it is easy to see why this gentle cluster of stone washed cottages, overlooking the Mediterranean sea isone of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the world. The wonder of Byblos lies in that it is a true microcosm of the civilisations that have populated Lebanon over the millennia. The ruins are multilayered stretching back to 7000BC and incorporating such a wide variety of artefacts that it truly transforms commonly held views of Lebanon and its status in the ancient world. Phoenician Kings’ sarcophagi sit aside a Roman amphitheatre, while Chalcolithic jar burial remains are intermixed with Bronze Egyptian figurines. And to top it all off, all of this is watched over by a strikingly picturesque coastal village, sprinkled with stone-hewn taverns and white washed churches. Jeita Grotto Venture 20km out from the city to Jeita Grotto; a compound of crystallized caves in the Valley of Nahr al-Kalb. The caves, which provide an escape route for the underground river are made up of two limestone caves, upper galleries and a lower cave. Seeping water in the limestone has created immense, cathedral-like vaults in a multitude of colours and shapes. Forlorn stalactites and stalagmites fashion majestic curtains of rock framing this underground spectacle. 9000m long and containing one of the biggest stalactites in the world, the grotto is a familiar but significant tourist attraction.

pend any amount of time in the UAE and you will begin to notice the Emirati’s close connection with a particular bird of prey that is featured everywhere, from bank notes to government signs. Representing their passion and love for the Arab Bedouins, the falcon is the national emblem of the country and considered an integral part of traditional Gulf culture. Primarily a means to supplement an otherwise meagre diet, falconry was an integral part of desert life centuries ago. Such a harsh, unforgiving place required developing every available tool for harvesting its scarce resources. The ultimate hunting weapon in such an austere environment: falcons. Hunting expeditions also provided the ideal setting for tribal sheikhs to tour their area and connect with the people. The late Sheikh Zayed, founding father of the UAE, often spoke of the satisfaction he derived from being part of a hunting party.

Fast-forward to today, and even as the UAE has prospered, the old ways persist, and behind almost every camel stable and desert retreat is an aviary of saker falcons keeping the unique cultural tradition alive. Now considered the sport of Sheikhs, the most exclusive birds of prey can sell for nearly one million baht each, with wealthier owners known to house around one hundred. As rapid urbanization and over-hunting has adversely affected the natural habitat of the falcons, restrictions now make it illegal in Abu Dhabi itself, so falconers travel to hunt with their birds in other Arab countries including Morocco and Sudan. Domesticated falcons are given their own UAE passport, enabling them to travel on the same plane as their owners, with some airlines even permitting the same cabin. Having opened on 3rd October, 1999, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) was the first public institution in the United Arab Emirates to provide comprehensive veterinary health care services exclusively for falcons. Yearly around 11,200 falcons are received there for examinations and treatment. Since its inception, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital has emerged as one of the most reputed falcon hospitals in the Gulf region and as the largest falcon hospital in the world and leading centre for falcon medicine world-wide. Over the years, the ADFH has established a loyal and a wide patient-base not just in the UAE, but also in the adjacent countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.

Hospital director Dr. Margit Muller said, “Falconry is not regarded as a sport in the UAE, as it is in the United States and Europe. In the Middle East falconry has a different background. Even 70 years ago in the UAE most of the population were Bedouin living in the desert. Falcons were integrated into the Bedouin family like a child and even today, falcons have exactly the same position in the family. They're not regarded as a sports tool - they are like a son or daughter. In 2007, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital embarked on a new journey: and opened its doors to the tourism industry for the first time. Visitors are given the chance to learn all about the falcons and their history in the UAE, as well as experience the majestic royal birds of prey up close and personal in the operating room undergoing check-ups, and in flight in one of several large molting cages. The braver tourist can even feel the weight of one perched on their arm during feeding. The ADFH has become one of the main tourism attractions in Abu Dhabi and is recognised internationally for its unique and unforgettable tour program that has won several awards from Europe and the US. words by Brett Turner

just out Star Wars – The Force Awakens USA / Lucasfilm 2015 Has there ever been a film with more riding on it’s success? Arguably the hideous Episode 1, The Phantom Menace, but that was a guaranteed hit (in spite of it’s awfulness it is still the 21st most successful film of all time, having raked in over $1billion). So with this in mind and Disney paying George Lucas $4billion for Lucasfilm, perhaps it’s understandable that director JJ Abrams and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan play it safe with a story that at times becomes a combined virtual remake of the three originals.

Just Out Steve Jobs USA / Universal 2015 Usually a reputable director is a good sign of the standard of a film (although rarely a guarantee), but in this case it’s the writer. Danny Boyle is a great film maker but few write dialogue like Aaron Sorkin (West Wing, The Social Network, A Few Good Men). Steve Jobs is a perfect combination of his writing, great direction and some excellent performances.

We begin with Rey (Daisy Ridley), a scavenger on desert planet Jakku, reminiscent of Tattooine from previous installments apart from the beautifully rendered wreckage of huge imperial starships scattered around the landscape. Mysteriously abandoned by her family as a child, she ekes out a sad existence, dreaming of escape to the stars (already sounding familiar?).

The surviving characters from the original trilogy (less Billie-Dee Williams’ Lando, which is a shame) all join the adventure at various points with the screen idol presence of Harrison Ford as Han Solo guiding the new characters on their way. It all adds up to a very enjoyable film, played with the sense of fun that propelled the originals to such success.

She is joined by Finn (John Boyega), a deserting stormtrooper on the run. They embark on an adventure that brings them in to conflict with the evil First Order, a neo-Nazi offshoot of the old Imperial Empire. Their main leader is Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), a Darth Vader fanboy right down to his own self-styled metal mask. These three characters are pivotal to the story that unfolds and it’s to the producer’s credit that all three are excellent, along with hot-shot pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) who we see too little of - apparently his role will be expanded in future episodes.

Unlike, of course, the aforementioned prequel trilogy, a humorless, dour set of films that for many sucked the life out of the Star Wars universe. It’s perhaps because of this that it’s fair to say The Force Awakens is effectively a soft reboot, not to the extent of that other JJ Abrams franchise resurrection Star Trek, but the culminating battle and plot points that decide the final act of the film are startlingly close to the end of Return of The Jedi.

Indeed Rey’s character is beautifully drawn and superbly acted by Ridley, a role that the entire film arguably rests on – imagine where we’d be with a repeat of the Jake Lloyd kiddie-fiasco of Episode 1. Indeed making the main character a strong female one is a stroke of genius. No doubt for years to come Rey will provide young girls with dreams of adventure re-enacted in back gardens and playgrounds that have been a long time coming in overwhelmingly male-dominated action adventure films (embarrassingly some have still struggled to move with the times, with many toy manufacturers bizarrely leaving out her character from action figure sets and even leading to the hashtag movement #WheresRey).

The film is divided in to three product launches – the first Apple Mac in 1984, the cube-shaped NeXT Computer in 1988 and the gorgeously designed iMac in 1998. What takes place is thematically similar to Sorkin’s other recent film The Social Network – indeed it was also originally set to be directed by the same director David Fincher. Both are about young geniuses that see a technological opening in the market and completely believe in their vision. Another similar theme is the less charismatic partner who is left to one side when gold is struck, in this case Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak (Seth Rogen). Just as importantly, both of those films deal with men that initiate seismic changes in technology and the way society communicates while being total failures at communicating with the women in their lives. Ironically, apart from a discarded partner and the denial of his child, there is another woman at the centre of Job’s life; marketing chief Joanna Hoffman (Kate Winslet), serving as both his conscience and confidante while her boss bullies his way through a series of back-stage bust-ups. Interestingly, we don’t actually see the main presentations, just the rock star build-ups, all stamping feet and Mexican waves. Of course it’s ironic that Steve Jobs insisted on making computers that were totally inaccessible (and therefore serviceable), yet this amazing screenplay of Sorkin’s is

But it’s all done with such love, care and attention and obvious reverence for the originals, along with the need to get things back on track and return Disney’s colossal investment, that perhaps this lack of originality can be forgiven in this first new installment. Now that Abrams job is done and we have a set of extremely likeable heroes to follow once more, what will make or break this series now is how fresh and original the next chapter is, the as-yet untitled Episode 8 in 2017, and even before that the first Star Wars spin-off movie Rogue One due in December this year. What is for certain though is that finally, after a 32 year wait, Star Wars is back and fun again.

mostly played out amongst the tangled wires he hopes to make impenetrable. Meanwhile it is Winslet’s character that steals the screen and is also the most likeable, her frostiness concealing warmth and human emotions missing amongst others. Surrounded by men arguing how important it is to get a computer to say ‘hello’ on stage, she reminds them that while HAL in 2001 had the clipped tones of an English butler, he also tried to kill his entire crew. Just like the three products that chart the films evolution, the film goes through stages of it’s own, shot initially with grainy 16mm stock, through the gloss of 80’s 35mm film, and finally eye-bleedingly sharp digital, the look of the film moving with the times it’s depicting. At the centre of all this of course is Jobs, and here Michael Fassbender plays a great double act, making him not only believable but actually empathetic, bringing to life a man less able to relate to people than some of his machines. Is this an accurate depiction of the real man and events? Maybe that’s not the point. The credits mention Walter Isaacson’s extremely well researched book, while many of Steve Job’s associates insist this is not the man they knew. Either way, this flawed genius is the creation of a great writer, and makes for a compelling film.

BOXSETHEAVEN Never be clueless again about the shows everyone's talking about. Resident TV show addict Brett Turner weeds out the best from the rest of the box sets out there available to watch and download, mixing bang up to date stuff with old ones you may have missed.

Classic Box Set Eastbound and Down USA / HBO 4 seasons, 2009 – 2013 Comedy is probably the most polarizing genre out there. Some people like their humor to be warm and fuzzy, based on dysfunctional families or other situations that remind them of their own lives. Others prefer their comedy un-PC, foul-mouthed and over the top. Eastbound and Down definitely falls in to the latter. Furthermore, unlike its lead character, it’s a class act. Danny McBride plays Kenny Powers, a baseball pitcher with far too much talent for his ego. He’s managed to destroy his career with fast women, fast cars and all the steroids he can cram in his mouth, and as we join him he’s at the very bottom - having moved in to his brothers house faced with getting a ‘real’ job. What transpires is one continuous montage of chaos, Kenny offending just about everyone he meets. And doing exactly the wrong thing at every opportunity.

This is built on a surreal cast of supporting characters. Mexican penis-hacking dwarves, evil bleach-haired BMW salesmen and an STD-riddled stripper to name a few. Friends this is not. Best of all is his unquestioningly loyal, tag-along ‘friend’ Stevie (Steve Little), a man of spectacularly low IQ and the permanent grinning openmouthed expression of an eager to please dog.

Mexico hiding from the humiliation of being conned in to thinking he was set for a comeback, his new passion for cockfighting sustaining him and his new local friends. The third and fourth have him improbably as a father (not his perfect role in life, at one point he leaves his baby son in a hole in the beach covered with a towel while he goes bodyboarding).

But the main event is Kenny Powers and he is an incredible creation. Mulletted, convinced of his gorgeousness and all-round brilliance, he is all machismo and self-belief. The entire universe revolves around him, and should think itself lucky to do so. In reality, the only thing he really has going for him is his ability to throw a baseball extremely fast, which has lead to the cosseted bubble he once lived in and desperately wants to return – so long as he’s asked nicely, of course.

This apparently puerile subject matter is propelled like Kenny’s Lamborghini by the standard HBOcommissioned excellence. It is edited and produced to the highest cinematic standards; indeed the editing (vital for good comedy) is razor-sharp. For example the opening title card is roughly 4 seconds long, but always brilliantly realized and almost always has you in hysterics.

The first series sees Kenny being forced to teach PE in his old home town, with utter disregard for the ages of his students as he openly spouts truisms about sex and drugs. The second has him down-and-out in We are introduced to congressman Francis “Frank” Underwood (Kevin Spacey), a power-hungry Democratic politician from South Carolina. He has his eye on becoming Chief of Staff and beyond. With him is his equally scheming wife Claire (Robin Wright), initially running a clean water NGO but before long we find that her ruthless instincts and lust for power are just as strong as her husbands.

NEW Box Set House of Cards USA / Netflix S1 2013, S2 2014, S3 2015, S4 Out Now Political TV shows tend to fall in to two camps – the ideological (West Wing) and most commonly, satire (Veep, In The Loop). House of Cards explores far darker territory, following one man and his wife’s Machiavellian schemes to climb the greasy pole to power in the US, all the way ultimately to the Presidency itself.

They move in circles of rival politicians (Frank sees everybody as a rival), lobbyists, lawyers and the superrich, all obsessed with their own vested interests. Even those that have the public’s wellbeing in mind are ultimately tied to their positions of power, and the Underwood’s know this. Playing on people’s greed and instincts for self-preservation, they play those around them off against one another in an increasingly tangled web. Some become loyal servants, like Franks henchman Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly) and personal bodyguard Edward Meechum (Nathan Darrow), while opponents that don’t get out of the way meet with fatal accidents or are buried in scandal, all the while with reporters and investigators one step behind. With its fourth season having just been aired (Netflix produce the show and release all of the episodes at once, a binge-watcher’s dream) there is of course the

There is drug use, there is nudity, the profanity is constant, a man has his eye knocked out by a baseball, the list goes on. For some it will just all be too much. I couldn’t get enough.

danger that a television show about American politics is in danger of being upstaged by reality. Coming out slap-bang in the middle of a surreal Republican nomination race, there was the danger that season four would appear out of touch and suddenly from another era. While it doesn’t veer in to the absurdities of current US politics, it still twists and turns with some genuine upsets and great cameos. Spacey is as ever an excellent anti-hero, thoroughly watchable in a role that for some must be starting to define him in spite of an outstanding acting career. Robin Wright has never been better, stunning yet cold as ice, playing her own game as she and her husband dance around each other’s ambitions. Season 4 is certainly getting back in to darker territory and it has returned to it’s murkier roots after seeming to become more policy / politics focused in S3. There are still moments and story threads that reflect reality – a militarized terrorist group is obviously an imitation of ISIS for example – but the show has returned to it’s strengths of drama, intrigue and just plain old evil-doing for the sake of power and money. The chilling final scene is the perfect final note in a triumphant return.

shop it : Spaco

Koh Samui is the third largest island of Thailand after Koh Phuket and Koh Chang. (Koh means island.) In the past, it had the most coconuts, and had been supplying the fruits and oil extracted from them for over a hundred years. Coconuts were very important as economic crop plants, hence the island's symbol. Transportation of coconuts and coconut oil to consumers nationwide was by two freighters: PhanuRangsi and Harin ships. They sailed from Songkhla to board passengers and goods, and carried them to Bangkok. There the goods were in turn distributed all over the country. Coconuts brought prosperity to gardeners, allowing them to send their children to Bangkok for education. Some of whom later went on to work for civil services. SamuiRenong would like to introduce Spaco, products from pure coconut oil, manufactured with selected quality coconuts of Koh Samui and loved byThais and foreigners alike living on the island. Our manufacturing processes are organic and without heat. Mobile Phone +66(0)89 744 8335
