So, with this May June edition of One Coast Magazine we are hoping that we can pass onto you some of our positive energy. We start off right on the front cover with Andres Pira, only a few years ago Andres was penniless and sleeping on the beach in Phuket. Now a successful billionaire and entrepreneur, we learn a little about his secrets and especially his new book. Mo Seetubtim from The Happiness Planner takes over the Mindfulness section now and in this first issue for her article Mo gives us 6 mindset shifts to help you feel positive when life gets hard. Dan Remon is also no stranger to our magazine but now we can proudly say that Dan is going to be writing our Wellness section. Dan starts this issue with Travel Moves. In our About Her interview we catch the lovely May Cavin, May’s story is one of hard work, determination, love and passion. From pushing her own street cart around Pattaya to now owning a successful international franchise business. Of course, the magazine is packed with our usual delectable lifestyle articles and to whet your appetite we have watches from Bovet and Carolina Herrera’s new fragrance “Being Bad”. For the rest you are going to have to take a peek inside, as I don’t want to spoil your fun. Have a Great Positive Day with One Coast Magazine.

give birth to a marvelous collaboration between Schiaparelli & Swarovski

chiaparelli and Swarovski continue their collaboration telling this season a story of mother-of-pearl and colorful multi-facetted crystal beads. Everything started with a Lesage embroidery swatch from Fall 1940 Schiaparelli Haute Couture collection 2018 featuring mother-ofpearl flowers. The embroidery came on a black dress that Elsa Schiaparelli owned and later donated to London’s V&A. Today, Schiaparelli design director Bertrand Guyon designs a wedding dress sprinkled with irises – one of Elsa Schiaparelli’s favorite flowers. Each bloom is embroidered once again by Lesage following the same original technique yet embellished with silver plate, Swarovski multi-facetted crystals and silver metal thread. The long ivory silk crepe cape-gown is scattered with 54,795 Swarovski crystal-hearted mother-of-pearls. Further to Schiaparelli history of innovative materials, Bertrand Guyon collaborated with an independent female textile designer to create checked knitwear made of nylon yarn intertwined with Swarovski multi-facetted crystal beads. The exclusive savoir-faire merges 3D embroidery with almost invisible knitwear. Transparent, light and soft, it gives traditional knitting an unexpected volume and contemporary texture. Illuminated by a tartan of black jet and grege beads of over 2.4 million facets, the ruffled dress, made of this hybrid material, seems to defy gravity. www.schiaparelli.com

Travel-inspired SS18 couture collection by Ralph & Russo...
Ralph & Russo Spring/Summer 2018 couture is truly a continued celebration of the many facets of all women and the collection pays homage to the Eastern exploration of Creative Director, Tamara Ralph. Resonant of traditional Asian decoration and punctuated by imperial red silk crêpe, acid green gazar and canary yellow silk satin; the collection is a spectrum of exoticism, with transparent illusion tulle suits, crystal embroidered jacquard and draped kimono-style silhouettes edged in layers of decorative tassels. Moulded white crêpe jasmine petals and powder blue organza chrysanthemums enhance delicately hand painted florals and songbirds, whilst tiers of devoré ostrich feathers and chiffon ruffles reflect the features of sacred eastern architecture. Metallic crystal chainmail and silk lamé both return in an underlying theme of reflection, not only of the creative mind and exploration, but of the importance of travel for today’s modern woman.

arolina Herrera proudly introduced GOOD GIRL, the ultra feminine fragrance that embraces the modern women of today. GOOD GIRL revels in her unapologetic duality – her femininity and sensuality, her timeless elegance and casual irreverence, her hopeless romance and fearless independence. The House of Herrera has created a fragrance that captures and celebrates her glorious, high-spirited duality. With GOOD GIRL, Carolina Herrera makes its boldest, most provocative statement to date. For more than 30 years, the House of Herrera has created fashion and fragrances defined by the effortless elegance and sophistication that epitomizes New York style. Always relevant, Carolina Herrera’s new fragrance reflects the multidimensional attitudes of the modern woman, further expressed through the campaign hashtag, “IT’S SO GOOD TO BE BAD.” who wears GOOD GIRL.

For over four years, Carolina Herrera de Baez, Creative Director of the House of Herrera Fragrances, brought her extensive knowledge of the brand and fragrance development into the creation of GOOD GIRL. Every part of the fragrance is a reflection of the Herrera woman, best told through de Baez herself. The luminous bottle, a midnight blue ultra-high stiletto and gold-heel, includes a complex internal pressure system. Both fragrance and bottle express the sensual, confident, feminine and powerful nature of the woman who wears GOOD GIRL. 18

A BOLD CAMPAIGN WITH BRILLIANT COLLABORATORS To create GOOD GIRL, Carolina Herrera de Baez turned to master perfumer Louise Turner. Known for her adventurous, innovative approach, Turner was the perfect perfumer to capture in scent the excitement and exhilarating complexity of today’s sophisticated woman. For the print campaign, internationally renowned photographer Mario Testino brings GOOD GIRL to life through a series of images that capture the essence of the fragrance. Together with his collaborator and muse, super model Karlie Kloss, Testino weaves a spell that exposes a woman’s sensuality and mystery and at the same time speaks to her bold intelligence and playfulness - the delight GOOD GIRL takes in being absolutely, unapologetically herself.

Amplifying the campaign and telling the final piece of the GOOD GIRL story so powerfully – and delightfully - is a short film that boldly expresses the GOOD GIRL experience. The film, to the soundtrack of Chris Isaak’s “Baby Did a Bad Thing” opens to the skyline of New York City at dusk as Karlie Kloss dresses for a special night. In a long, black sequined, side-slit Carolina Herrera dress and the high stiletto, she struts down the streets of New York, a woman with a mission, on her way to a very important date. With the energy of a movie superhero, she impacts everyone and everything she passes: cars collide, newspaper stands bursts, and men are mesmerized by her presence. Alluring, provocative, amusing and memorable, the film delivers the GOOD GIRL message #GOODTOBEBAD. SHE
RVLES,
REINVENTING
THE RVLES
Charismatic and powerfully beautiful just like her favourite ring, Bella Hadid defines herself through her natural unconventionality. Determined yet shy, Bella faces her life under the spotlight with great determination and a touch of charming ingenuity: a model, an athlete and famous since birth, she willingly embraces change, accepting her life as herself with all her contradictions in the name of authenticity. Strong, fierce and independent like a modern-day Amazon, Bella runs through her adventurous life as if she were on the catwalk - with feline instinctive force and innate energy. She has the ability to capture the camera lens with a single look, yet behind that serious and slightly sullen look, there is a passionate love for life and the natural brightness of a Californian girl. An incurable optimist, she knows how to make good things happen. Reinventing the rules in everything she does, Bella believes in an individualism which is synonymous with following one’s own path. She doesn’t care about being rebellious, she wants to live her own way. Wearing B. zero1 for Bulgari, Bella believes like the Roman jeweller that jewellery can inspire women to make their own rules: “B.zero1 represents my powerful side, the one that proclaims difference in the face of conformity.” In her world of sharing, a piece of art, a dress, a jewel, or an object are the most exciting ways to express her true colours:“I think design says a lot about how we live, who we are and what we find beautiful. The world today is fluid: a painting becomes a bag, a dish inspires a dress, an architectural masterpiece is crafted into a ring… To me design is one of the arts that best catches this flowing energy.” For Bella design always has its own story and the innate power to be captured in the most personal way.

The new Spring/Summer 2018 campaign of Ermanno Scervino, shot by Mikael Jansson is powerful enough to stir your senses. The intense and dynamic images focus on a sole, true protagonist: Ermanno Scervino’s creations. The Swedish photographer, who for years worked with the most prestigious magazines and fashion brands, has pictured the female models Mckenna Hellam, He Cong, Myrthe Bolt and the male model Barry Lomeka in Forte dei Marmi, a location chosen to emphasize the strong bond between the Maison and the Tuscan territory. The four protagonists move into the flowered garden of Villa Lazzi, where the dialogue between clothes, nature and light creates an almost dreamlike atmosphere. “I really like this campaign for its strong images and because it perfectly expresses my modern and international stylistic idea. For this season I did not want a single, high impacting testimonial, because I think that in this collection the clothes themselves are the best vehicle for my message. However, I strongly wanted behind the camera Mikael Jansson, whose work I know and appreciate, “said Ermanno Scervino.

6 MINDSET SHIFTS TO HELP YOU FEEL POSITIVE WHEN LIFE GETS HARD
“To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.”
Lao Tzu
Growing up, I’ve always loved living in big cities. From Bangkok to Melbourne, Sydney, London, NYC, and now Los Angeles, I get excited about the buzzing streets, busy commutes, an array of shops and cafes more than anything. It’s the positive, vibrant, fast-moving energy that I thrive of. As of now I am sitting on the 8th floor of a famous co-working space whose beautiful view overlooks the Hollywood Hill. Being a nomad has taught me many things - and one of those things is that you are your own home. Home is not where your parents are. Home is not where your closest friends are. Home is not a postcode, or a house, or a land. When the world is your home, you carry home within you. With that in mind, I have learned to take good care of my body, but more importantly, of my mind.

body&mindmindful lifestyle Life is full of ups and downs. Even though we try to stay positive and happy, sometimes we just can’t help but feel a little down. Things don’t always go as planned. Disappointments, rejections, hurt, worries, illnesses, jealousy, annoyance - all of these things can occur to make us feel very uncomfortable in our own mind. We know it’s not good to feel this way but sometimes it’s just really hard to unplug and calm down the chaotic mind. We internalize our thought about a certain thing that annoys us or hurts us because it gives us comfort. However, by internalizing that thought in our head, thinking about it over and over, we reinforce the negative feeling we have and fill ourselves up with negative energy. Here are the 6 tips of what you can do to calm down the chaotic mind and get yourself out of the habit of internalizing negative thought patterns. 1. When you find yourself over-thinking about something, take your mind off it with “meditation”. It’s hard to switch from a negative thought to a positive thought right away. So instead of trying to do that, use “meditation” to help you transition. Because when you meditate you need to have a clear mind - you should not think about anything but just focus on your breathing. Meditation sets your mind and your brain to default - to a blank state. Doing this for 10 minutes your head will be clear and you will feel relaxed - ready to start thinking about something that gives you joy again. 2. When you face a struggle in life, instead of feeling you’re unfortunate or life is not fair, see it as an opportunity to learn and to grow your mental strength. Because without a struggle, you wouldn’t get to grow your mental strength. It’s a blessing in disguise. When you start thinking life is unfair, you’d then have a tendency to circle that thought in your head - telling yourself so over and over which is only going to make you feel worse. Instead of wasting time feeling sad and sorry for yourself, accept the situation and see this as a challenge for yourself. Forget about the future. Just focus on your next step. Then your next step. Inch by inch. Eventually you claw your way out. “When the worst happens, you can’t worry about the rest of your life. You can’t even be worrying about the rest of the month. But you can usually handle one day at a time. And whenever 24 hours is too tough, bite off five minutes at a time. Tackle one problem at a time. Take a step. You get a little confidence… take another step, and another. Eventually you find that the worst is over.” - Andrew Matthew, author of Happiness in Hard Times

3. When you feel stressed because you feel overwhelmed with work and things you have to do, make a clear to-do list and tick them off one by one. Writing things down helps you organize and give a structure to your thoughts – and that helps you feel more at ease. Create task lists based on priority. Categorize them into groups. Assign them working timeslots and deadlines, so that you don’t over-multitask and feel overwhelmed. Once you’ve got it all organized, then you just have to follow through. Focus on one task at a time. Complete it one by one. By doing it this way, you’ll feel less stressed and get more things done. 4. When you feel grumpy and negative because the people around you are negative, start treating yourself as a priority and step away from those people. Nothing is worse than being affected emotionally by other people’s negative energy. Sometimes you can’t help but bump into a moody person at the grocery store or a grumpy face at the gym. Try to understand that they are fighting their own battles. If you have to associate with them in any way, then try to be detached about it as much as possible and do not take it personally. Let them vent if you must, but if being negative and grumpy is their nature – it’s their natural thought and emotional pattern - then you cannot do anything but avoid being affected by it. If they’re family, try helping them in a subtle way if you can. If they’re friends, spend less time with the negative ones and hang out more with the positive ones.Your time, energy, and feelings are precious. So don’t let anyone think they have the right to destroy your good mood, positivity, and happy vibes with their negativity.
38
O N E CO A S T
5. When you feel tired from work, try to focus on the simple joy in life. Sometimes it’s hard to relax when you’re tired from work. Knowing your body is the best way to lift yourself up after a hard day. What is the one little thing you can do at the end of a hectic day that will help you unwind? A glass of wine? A bath? A comedy show? A beautiful dinner? A run? Make it a habit to add these things to your daily life so that stress doesn’t build up and you don’t experience burnout. Learn to find joys from simple things in life – the little things you should be grateful for – your kids, your home, your family, your friends, your work, etc. When you make gratitude a habit, no matter what happens, your heart still feels nourished and full. 6. When you’re sick, don’t see yourself as unfortunate. Instead, feel thankful for being alive. Being sick is never fun. We feel weak, emotional, irrational, and sometimes we wish we could just hide under the ground like a carrot stick. But you should feel happy that at least
you’re sick - you’re not dead or suffering from a more chronic or more serious illness. There are many more people who have worse conditions than you.You are very lucky that you are recovering and that you will be well soon. Take this opportunity to think about who you feel thankful for in life, the things you’d like to do before you die, and make plans to achieve those things so you won’t have any regret when your time actually comes. Switching our thoughts from negative and positive is not easy. Just like any other habits, it requires practice – lots of it. In the beginning, it will feel like we’re forcing ourselves. But as we keep doing it, being mindful of our own thoughts and realizing that we have the power to change how we feel because we can change what we focus on, it gets easier each time. Through these powerful practices, we are creating a new pathway in our brain and strengthen it through repetition. We are building powerful habits that will help us become the master of our own mind, so that no matter what happens in life, we know that we’ll be okay.

Travel Moves! I’m going to switch the tables around here. Usually articles on health and travel cover the same mundane boring topics. Stretch, walk, eat healthy and get plenty of sleep. I get it and agree.Yes, they are all helpful tips, but how many people do you see who actually do it. We are going to discuss a few ways for you to think outside the box, maximize your energy, perhaps even optimize your brains’ operating system and make travel WORK for you, rather than the other way around. They say that sitting is the new smoking. Meaning, being inactive, or living a sedentary life leads to higher risk of health conditions later in life. Most people complain about travel, lots of waiting around, sitting, not much to do, especially when travelling for work, rather than leisure. So, we are going to put some fun back into travel. Twerk When You’re at Work. And even when you’re not. Squeeze your Glutes. The Gluteus Maximus muscle, aka ‘Glutes’ are the largest and strongest muscle in the body and essential to our functional capacity. They are the reason why and how we can move, walk, jump, run, stand up, take the stairs, change direction and get out of bed. The activation and health of our Glutes allow us to perform not just activities of daily living, they are directly related to longevity and our extended quality of life. They are one of the first to deteriorate when sit for too long and are in active in life. And they are the most important to maintain as we age. Another general tip, which is easy to do, true is to simply walk. While seated in the plane for hours, simply get up more often every 30 minutes and do walk the isles. Keep the blood flowing to your extremities and while you’re up, walk on your tip toes and add some simple rotations while you are on your feet. The next and keep moving. Just as we encourage everyone to sit less, even at work, get up from your chair and move, go for a walk every 30 minutes. Not only does this invigorate you, it increases blood flow and neural activity to tell your body to operate, function and activate all its senses. Now that activity to the next level. Squat. Yep, full body, easy to do anywhere and requires no equipment. How perfect is that! To perform squats, you need to engage large muscle groups, your core and upper back. They require ‘effort’ through a full range of motion and therefore easily increase your heart rate and boost your metabolism. Now if you’re not quite ready to openly do your asquats in public, then here are a couple of sneaky ways to be discreet. If you want to be less obvious, simply go for a walk-through duty free, book shops, anywhere and go through the books and magazines on the lower shelves. Or simply go through your bag while it’s on the floor and rummage around. Definitely while you’re on the plane doing your aisle walks, find some space, usually around the exit doors near the kitchen or at the back of plane, and squat away. Its invigorating, keeps you fresh, improves circulation and reduces your risk of DVT. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs. Inactivity, especially when flying can increase your risk. This is another reason to do your squats and also follow the exercises you find in front of your chair or inside the flight magazine. End point. Move more, squeeze your Glutes and do your squats.
body&mindwellness Train Your Brain Use your time productively. It is our most precious resource. When you travel, I use me ‘downtime’ without the internet to grow, develop and optimize my life. One way you can do this other than reading books or watching movies is to prepare your playlist before you travel – but not just any playlist.
Feed Your Belly Before You Fly It’s a simple decision. Skip the plane food. You can be more organized if you want to prioritize your health and request a healthier meal option when you book your seats. Or even better, eat a more ideal meal before you get to the airport. Very few of us actually eat when we are full and satisfied so this is a great tip. I simply challenge you and put forth the question for you to answer yourself. Let’s be honest. How many times do you unwrap your flight meal and go wow that tastes amazing!? Yep, like never. If your goal is to live longer, with an incredible level of health and fitness, energy and success, you might already be practicing some powerful lifestyle methods like eating less frequently. Commonly referred to as Intermittent Fasting, or IF, reducing your meal frequency and eating those meals within a time from of 4 or 8 hours has incredible benefits. I personally don’t like to put a label on it or put in its own little box. Just reduce your frequency of eating and keep your meals within a short window. Easy. Highly researched and proven to facilitate cellular recovery, repair your DNA, slow down the aging process, reduce your risk of health conditions and cardiovascular disease, reduce body fat and body weight, reduce hypertension, reduce inflammation, increase your metabolism, maintain health, weight, manage and reduce insulin levels. To name just a few. Pretty powerful. I suggest you look into it. And your first step, is to simple skip your plane meal. End point. Be more aware. Eat for a purpose, not just because it’s there.
Instead of downloading music, you can download a series of neural beats.‘Binaural Beats’ is a term given to a measured change in brain activity when presented with audio stimulus. They are a type of audio technology designed to put your brain into the same state as meditation. These types of audio waves have also been used to help reduce stress, induce deeper levels of sleep, promote relaxation and give you similar benefits as other relaxation and breathing exercises. But there’s more! In addition, some Binaural Beats enhance creativity, concentration and focus, improve learning ability and help develop overall cognitive and neural performance. There are a growing amount of research efforts reporting changes in consciousness associated with binaural-beats.“The subjective effect of listening to binaural beats may be relaxing or stimulating, depending on the frequency of the binaural-beat stimulation” (Owens & Atwater, 1995). There are plenty of free sites where you can download Binaural Beats and other neural activating audios. Just prioritize 5 minutes to do a quick search, download and you’re good to go. In summary, your mission when you travel next is to walk to the shop furthest away from your gate. Search for the best pair of stereo headphones or scour the shelves for books and magazines. Scan each shelf multiple times while doing your squats, squeeze your Glutes at the top while paying at the checkout and repeat on the return to the gate ready to fly. Happy travels.

May’s Story with Love & Passion
May’s Story is a story of hard work and compassion from a young Thai entrepreneur. May, born Maypreeya Damphonthan in 1981 is the youngest daughter to a Thai farmer family with 7 children in Baan Som Sanuk, a north-eastern Thai farmer village bordering the Mekong River. After having sold clothes in one of Bangkok’s wholesale markets at the age of 19, she saw an opportunity to enter hospitality and started working her way up the career ladder, the hard way from the bottom. Ten years later and wiser she was tired of the global corporate standards, which often neglected personality, and hence wanted to start something of her own at the same quality, yet filled with Love and Passion. In 2014 May took to the streets, literally, with her street stall and started serving urban refined street food in a clean street ambiance at a food market in Pattaya, Thailand. The stall was doing so well, with cues for over an hour at times, which soon allowed her to build a proper restaurant with a thatch roof. Her success kept going and her name started to make its way through the industry. That’s when she was approached to open restaurants for other investors and started first work on a franchise brand – MAYs Urban Thai Dine was created that same year. Of course, One Coast had to find out more.

“May”
May, thank you for taking the time to visit us at One Coast Magazine. Your story is really one of success through pure hard work and determination, a story that should give incentives to our young generation. Would you tell us a little about your life as a young girl in Baan Som Sanuk? I grew up in a large family where parents went to work early to earn money. As I remember from my childhood when we woke up there were no parents around and we had to collect the eggs ourselves, boil them and prepare ourselves for school. After school we had to help the family and cook for dinner and then clean the dishes. Most often my family was very tired from the hard work at the rice fields, so we often gave our parents or older siblings a ‘Thai massage’, simply by stepping on them. Overall, I would describe my childhood very difficult as we didn’t have any money. Although we had land, we had to collect or hunt our own food as children. There were no such things as toys and we were constantly working. I believe this allowed me to enter the life of business much stronger than most others would. When did you first move to Bangkok and what did you do? After high school I moved to Bangkok at the age of 18, working at a small clothes shop to pay for my younger brother’s high school and college tuition, which my parents could not afford themselves. I myself and my 5 older siblings were not able to go to college or university and thus it was very important that our youngest brother was able to study. 2014 you took to the streets with your own street stall, tell us about how this started? We have to backtrack this a little bit as it was a chain of failed events. In 2012 my husband and I took a new job as a Corporate Director Couple to build a new hotel brand with hotels throughout China, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. We were hired under a couple package and were hoping to spend more time together, which turned out a complete mistake as we were constantly in different countries. Eventually, after only 8 months, we left this job and arrived back in Thailand without work. We had a vision to build a restaurant, which we should have paid for with our savings but our previous employer at the time decided not to pay us for our two last months’ work and all of a sudden, our plans were crushed. So there we stood without work and with only THB 40’000 in our pockets, after months spent at the court without success, draining our pockets even more. We had the choice to either go back to corporate life, which we really didn’t like, or we earn money in any other way. At that time, we lived at my husband’s family condo in Pattaya and ate daily at a night market across the street as it was the only thing we could afford. We eventually decided we could create a beautiful food stall and differentiate ourselves by serving ‘hotel quality’. We bought a stall, 4 nice wood tables and stools, proper ceramic plates and designed a beautiful wood menu with the last money we had. This little difference, together with our food, and maybe the fact that a white guy, my husband, was serving people at a street market, made all the difference and filled our restaurant every single day with long cues at peak times. This is how it all started.
With so many food stalls in Pattaya how did yours make such a difference and what was it exactly you sold? My husband and I often ate in the streets, and still do. Although we like the food in the streets, we never appreciate the rusty and dirty tables, half broken chairs and greasy laminated menus. The beauty of Thailand is the fact that most people follow the same routine and thus you quickly stand out if you do something different. By placing nice wood tables and comfortable stools, a clean wood menu, placing a candle light on the table and serve a complimentary “amuse bouche”, normally only known to fine dining establishments, I stood out greatly from the mass. My first stall was called MAYs 4 Regions Seafood, which served a variety of seafood dishes inspired by the four main regions of Thailand. But I also had fresh oysters every day and Phuket Lobster from time to time, which surely was an eye catcher as well. All of a sudden people spent THB 1200 for a lobster at a street stall… Tell us please how you transitioned from one street stall to having your own franchise? Everything actually started with the fact that I did not take raining season into consideration when I opened my street stall… I now stood out from the crowd and people loved my food, but what was the point when my guests have to eat in the rain. I remember one time when it was raining so heavily that our guests were sitting knee deep in water. Unfortunately, the market I was cooking at, was one of the worst flooded areas in all of Jomtien. Eventually guests started joking about the fact that it would really be quite nice if we had a somewhat drier place to serve our food. At that time, I had run the street stall already for a couple of months and saved quite a bit of money. So I decided to find an affordable location for a ‘dry’ restaurant. It wasn’t easy but eventually I came across a bit of concrete floor, literally just concrete floor, of around 150sqm. I could not afford anything else but a bit of concrete floor at a vegetable market next to the Colosseum in Pattaya. As my husband and my brothers are very handy, we decided to build our restaurant ourselves. And so we did within only 2 weeks we built a metal structure with a thatch roof, separate kitchen and even our own toilet. At first I was concerned people won’t come and eat at this rather dark location, where rats ran around at night, but to 44
O N E CO A S T
my surprise I ran two years very well. After the end of our lease in October 2016, we had to move once again and found a location right next to my husband’s office. Once again, we built the restaurant ourselves, but this time put more attention to design details. We received great feedback and were approached by a friend to rebrand their coffee shop in Bali to a MAYs Urban Thai Dine. So we did and opened in July 2017 with success. This is when MAYs became a franchise. What was the most important part of setting up your own franchise? I suppose the most important part of setting up the restaurant franchise is the legal parts to assure you are protected on all ends. But I suppose the more important question within your question is ‘what is key to setting up a franchise’. I believe differentiation is still key. Today’s diners have very high expectations and dine with all scents. Therefore, a simple and solid concept, adaptable to different geographic locations and taste senses is key in my opinion. Combine this with delightful service and you are a winner. What makes MAYs Urban Thai Dine so special? First and foremost, it is our food combined with a comfortable ambience. All our restaurants are rustic in design with concrete floors and industrial walls, which is softened with lots of greenery on shelves and hanging baskets. But the most important part is our menu. All ingredients are fresh, and we don’t use any canned or chemically supplemented products. In addition, all our dishes are presented beautifully with flowers. We are particularly famous for our homemade curry pastes and thus our curry dishes are a best seller. It takes over 2 hours for each paste and we cook it weekly, which makes our curry dishes by far the best in every town we are present [smiling]. Again, we believe in the basics of great food, friendly service and a nicely designed restaurant ambiance. Where do you have restaurants now? Today we have restaurants operating in Pattaya – Thailand, Bali – Indonesia and Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam. You don’t seem to be one to rest so what are your future plans? I will rest peacefully underground when my time has come. Hopefully not so soon. Until then I will continue to work hard to delight our guests.
We are now opening our flagship restaurant with 180 seats in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 (our second branch in HCMC), which opens in May 2018, followed by another branch opening in Hanoi later this year. We are also working on bringing MAYs to Switzerland, where we will have a pop-up kitchen this summer, and hope to enter the market this way. Next year we are also expecting to open our first branch in Hainan – China and Mexico City – Mexico. We have strategically chosen these locations as we believe they provide us with a stepping stone into Europe, China and North America. Once we have those markets together with South East Asia, I believe I can take a break… If there is one thing you could say to our younger generation about business what would it be? First, I would seek out the ones with the right attitude to talk to. Unfortunately, it seems so difficult these days to find qualified young people. This is an opportunity once again for all the ones who have a positive and forward-thinking attitude. There are two things I would give the younger generation on their way to doing business. Firstly, don’t let yourself down by others telling you what you cannot do. What others think does not matter to your purpose. If you believe it strong enough and have the willpower to see it through, you can eventually achieve it.You will fall often, and you will fall hard. Get up, heal and go again. I believe I am proof enough of that. Secondly, be true to yourself. Keep a positive spirit and treat others with respect. You will realize what others call Karma or the gravitational force is nothing more than ‘if I treat you nice, you will treat me nice as well’. This will go a long way in business. Thank you for taking the time with us and readers can contact MAYs Urban Thai Dine on info@mays.restaurant or retrieve further information on the company website at https://mays.restaurant.

This edition of One Coast Magazine is very fortunate to meet up with Serial Entrepreneur and Real Estate Tycoon Andres Pira. Andres is originally from Sweden and left for Thailand at the tender age of 20. Lusting to live in a tropical country, a $2,000 inheritance from his grandfather bought him a one-way ticket to Thailand. After arriving in Bangkok and travelling to Phuket, it wasn’t long before there was only $100 left in Andres’s wallet. He was evicted out of his little apartment and sleeping hungry on the beach. Far from home and embarrassed to ask his immediate family for help, in desperation and hunger he phoned a friend. The friend answered, “I won’t give you any money, but I’ll give you a book that might help you.” Frustrated and upset from the response, Andres eventually read the book ‘The Secret’ while sitting on the beach. From that moment on, his life has completely changed with ‘The Law of Attraction’.

Andres, Thailand is not a sweet country if you have no financial means, you must have been close to giving up being both hungry and sleeping on the beach. What was it in the book that gave you the motivation to carry on? With no contacts, jobs, or knowledge of Thai language, I did realize quick after I got to Phuket that life wasn’t going to be a paradise I had hoped for.The book taught me visualization and the power of mind manifestation. Looking back, this was one of my worst and best moments of my life. What did you first do after reading the book what started you on your road to success? I tried to visualize someone giving me something to eat. The next day, I bumped into an old colleague which offered me a free lunch, I was like, ‘wow, this works.’ So, I became determined to get a job within the next week, then I got landed a job as a marketing executive handing out brochures for a real estate developer. Within 1 year, I was promoted to a sales agent, then sales manager, and finally sales director. By year 3, I excelled in real estate sales and had harvested several property investors who believed in my vision and ambitions. This led to my first investor funded Phuket property development company, Blue Horizon Thailand. Why did you choose Thailand in the first place? Honestly, the ticketing agent recommended it out to me, saying it was a destination I could afford with the money I had. How long have you had Blue Horizon? Blue Horizon Development has been established for over 15 years. We now currently employ a team of 249 employees and growing. In June 2017, Blue Horizon Developments was named ‘Top Thai Property Developer’ and Best New Hotel Construction & Design’ by Asia Pacific Property Awards 2017-2018. In July 2017, Blue Horizon Developments collected 3 awards, ‘Best Developer’, ‘Best Mixed-Use Development’, and ‘Best Mid-range Condo Development Phuket’ for their B850 million Grand Himalai Project at the inaugural awards ceremony by Thailand Property and Dot Property Group. Blue Horizon’s group of portfolio includes award-winning The Beachfront, award-winning Skylight Villas, Signature Villas, and Himalai Oceanfront Condominium. We’re nominated again in 2018 as well! Who’s the most inspiring mentor in your life? My mother. She was a strong woman of 4 amazing children, the only person who had always believed and encouraged me to be the best I could be and always keep chasing my dreams. Her words gave me strength. She recently lost her battle to cancer and will always be in my heart. In terms of mindset and helping me become a law of attraction master I would say, Authors like William walker Atkinson, Charles Haanel, Joe Vitale and Napoleon Hill. Once you were on the road to success you have still mostly stayed and expanded your businesses in Thailand, what is it with this country that even after first almost desperation and homelessness then slowly building yourself up to now that still keeps you here. Surely you must have considered expanding to other countries? With year-long sunny weather, amazing Thai dishes, and the culture, this is exactly the life I had dreamt of. Right now Thailand is a touristic hub and the real estate market is booming. I’d like to focus on developments in Thailand for few more years before expanding to overseas destination. Hey, you never know what good opportunities are around the corner. People meeting you and those I’ve met that work for you explain they feel inspired from you but where would you say your motivation and enthusiasm for life come from? The energy of being around great, forward-thinking people is what keeps me going. I surround myself with people who are constantly evolving, creating, and executing. It’s these awesome progresses that keep me challenging and motivating myself. I make sure to hire people that are smarter then me.

There is much interest about your new book ‘From Homeless to Billionaire- The 18 Secrets of Great Wealth and Becoming a Money Magnet’. Tell us a little about your book and when you decided to start writing it? I was always too shy to share my story. When I met Dr. Joe Vitale, a key contributor to ‘The Secret’, I told him about how his story triggered changes in my life so drastically. Dr. Joe then encouraged me to publicly speak about my experience for the first time ever in front of a 1,000 person audience. This was when I reached a point of realization that, my journey may be able to positively impact other people’s mind set in some way. That became my ultimate goal in writing this book. The debut of ‘From Homeless to Billionaire- The 18 Secrets of Great Wealth and Becoming a Money Magnet’ in 2019 will give you practical insights on tackling success and failures, how to give freely to activate positive vibrations, why passion and joy are key successes to life and work, learn to be a calculated risk taker, and how to convert problems into opportunities. I’ve spent years studying the habits, techniques, and mind set of the wealthiest people on earth and applied that to my life. If I can do it, you can too. Your enthusiasm for Real Estate in Phuket with especially Blue Horizon Thailand has won some prestigious awards recently. Tell us a little about your developments and what makes them stand out over your competition? I’ll start with The Signature Villas that are located in the South of Phuket, they’re well designed pool villas starting at $250,000 ranging 2-3 bedrooms. Skylight Villas is built on a beautiful mountainous view north of Phuket starting at $300,000 USD. The Beachfront Phuket is 202 condominium unit and ocean-front development and the property will be managed by our management partner Best Western Plus, this project will be up and ready to run by end of 2018. One of my proudest accomplishments are The Himalai & The Grand Himalai oceanfront condominium projects which the showroom is located in Kamala, Phuket. These projects are award-winning,‘Best Developer’, ‘Best Mixed-Use Development’,‘Best Architectural Concept’, and ‘Best Mid-range Condo Development Phuket’. My clients and I are very happy with them and have shown to be excellent investment projects.
Now with a net worth of over 1.8 Billion for your group of companies, you have expanded into a gym, law office, a gas station, several coffee shops, and more. Is there still something you have on your list? I also own www.propertyinphuket.com, which is the no. 1 real estate agency in Phuket currently. I have yet to reveal our newest project Heavena, which is currently in its first month of pre-sales. Heavena will be Phuket’s largest ever resort in a great location, modern design, with over 750 units. We’ve sold over 10% already just in our pre-sales in the first 30 days I’m pretty excited about this one! I’ve heard about Success Events on motivational speaking and mind set. What’s the sneak peek for Success Events December 2-3, 2018? This year’s Success Events will be epic! So far we have legendary motivational speaker Jack Canfield, Thai celebrities Lukkade Metinee Kingpayome, Natalie Glebova Former Miss Universe, and many more amazing line ups to share their stories. You can follow a more comprehensive schedule on www.successevents.com What do you do in your free time, you mentioned before you were keen on extreme sports, what type of adventures are you keen to explore these days? I enjoy mountain climbing, skydiving, bungee-jumping, ski-ing, body building, and football. I’ve climbed the Himalaya Mountains, which became an inspiration to name one of my development project, ‘Grand Himalai’. I’ve driven a Tuktuk across all of india and I have been on expeditions discovering caves and the biggest caves systems in the world spending days in complete darkness half a km under the earth’s surface. I genuinely believe ‘The adrenaline and stress of an adventure is better than a thousand peaceful days’. Do you have a special Phuket tip for our readers? I enjoy spending time on Phuket’s numerous sandy white beaches. It’s super nice to be on a boat exploring and diving in the Andaman Sea. When the sun sets, you can always enjoy Phuket’s renowned food scene from local street food to award-winning restaurants with amazing views. Kawasaki
Z900RS The Legend Lives Throwback to the ‘70s In 1973, I was the tender age of 10 when Kawasaki introduced the Z1 900, a bold in-line four powered bike that would inspire an entire new generation of motorcycles. A few years later and one of my older brother’s friends turned up on his new Z1 900 and I was immediately intrigued with this shiny powerful bike. I must have bugged the guy long enough before he put me on the back and roared off on an exhilaratingly fast ride around the Kentish roads. We rode fast, very fast, faster than I had ever been on anything before but surprisingly I wasn’t scared, I was on top of the world screaming for more. That day I remember so well as the start to my complete unadulterated addiction to motorcycles. It was this bike that started it all. RETURN OF THE KING So, this year as Kawasaki pulled the wraps off its new Z900RS, a retro-styled motorcycle based on the Z900 platform that recalls the classic Kawasaki Z1, I was immediately in love. Combining timeless retro styling, high quality components and muscle power of the original Z1 with today’s cutting-edge technology and performance, the powerful yet friendly-to-ride Z900RS represents
56
O N E CO A S T
a modern throwback of the icon that started it all especially for me. Like the Z900, the Z900RS is powered by a 948cc Inline-Four. The engine is tuned for low- to midrange performance, and to produce a specific sound. While the Z900 was designed to deliver a specific intake howl, the focus on the Z900RS is designed to deliver a strong, deep rumble from its megaphone exhaust when idling or moving at low speeds. The engine covers were retro designed to bring back the Z1’s 70’s feel, while the cylinders engine fins look air-cooled but hide the water cooling technology. The engine has a six-speed gearbox with a shorter first gear and longer sixth gear than the Z900. An assist & slipper clutch provides a lighter clutch lever pull while relieving back-torque pressure during excessive engine braking. The Z900RS also comes standard with a two-level traction control system. Retro Styled High Tec Details such as the teardrop gas tank, round headlight, tail cowl and dual instrument clusters are flashbacks to the Z1, yet they each maintain a modern touch. Between the old style analog speedometer and tachometer sits a multifunction LCD screen. The chromed circular headlamp with convex lamp cover give that classic appearance, but the light itself is an LED with six chambers: four for low beam and two for high beam. Like the Z1, the tail has a “duck bill” style cowl atop an oval taillight, only this light is also an LED. Unlike traditional LED lights which are a assortment of illuminated dots, the Z900RS’ taillight is surface-emitting, which means it forms one solid surface like a classic non-LED light.
lifestylecoast ride
The wheels also hide a piece of this modern-retro styling. At a quick glance, it looks like the Z900RS has wire spoke wheels. Look closer and you’ll see it actually has cast wheels with spokes that look like wires. The Z1-inspired fuel tank shape was a crucial part of the Z900RS’ strategy. To get it to fit, Kawasaki had to tweak the Z900’s trellis frame, moving the upper rails closer together. Once the tank was positioned, Kawasaki began working on the seat design and tail length for a balanced ratio closely resembling that of the Z1. Kawasaki also modified the riding position to be more upright and relaxed than the sportier Z900. The suspension system is comprised of a 41mm inverted fork offering 10-way compression and 12-way rebound adjustability and step less preload adjustability. At the rear, Kawasaki decided to keep the Z900’s horizontal back-link shock offering stepless rebound damping and preload adjustments instead of switching to the more retro-looking (but lower performance) twin shock design of the Z1. The front wheel is equipped with dual discs with four-piston radial mount monoblock callipers while a single-piston calliper is paired to the single rear disc brake. A Nissin ABS system comes standard. It has been a long time that Kawasaki have built a bike that really appealed to me, but with this powerful engine and modern day technology all wrapped up in the 70’s retro look I’ve found something that is definably on my bikes to buy list. www.kawasaki.com

Well, the new PAL-V liberty flying car is now in production and has just been debuted at the Geneva Motor 58 Show O N E with CO A S Torders being taken and the Dutch company promising deliveries this year.
lifestylecoast drive
So, if you want one of the coolest ways to beat the Bangkok traffic and have close to half a million dollars handy (Thai Prices not yet confirmed) then this car come plane come gyro could be for you. Put simply, it’s a car and gyroplane able to morph from ‘car’ to ‘plane’. The Liberty, which has been in development for more than 15 years and made its first flight in April 2012, features a unique Rotax engine-based dual-propulsion drivetrain. In drive mode, the propeller tucks into the rear of the vehicle and the rotors fold and store on top. PAL-V explains the Liberty can reach 100 mph on the ground and can be switched between driving mode and flying mode in a matter of 5 to 10 minutes. The Pal-V Liberty uses a powered pusher propeller for forward motion and an unpowered top rotor for lift. There’s no worry about wings because the Liberty is an autogyro. This means that the rotor doesn’t get power. Instead the propulsion from the propeller at the rear causes the blades on top to spin and create lift. Like a plane, it still requires a runway for take-off and landing. Once in-flight mode, pilots must take off from an airstrip or airfield — not the road — in accordance with regulations. The Liberty has a take-off roll of 180m and a maximum operating altitude of 3,500m. Pal-V estimates the Liberty can fly 399 km at its take off max weight and allowing for half an hour of reserve fuel upon landing. With a single person inside, the range grows to 499 km. Its max velocity is 180 kph but cruising speed is between 140 to 161 kph. The Liberty doesn’t quite solve the dream of being locked stuck in traffic and then able to lift off like a helicopter, but it does give pilots a single solution for getting around. They can drive to the airport, fly to their destination, and then switch the vehicle back into a car mode to the final destination. The emphasis here is of course “pilots” as using a Liberty in the air will require a flying license and a driving license would still be needed for the road. www.pal-v.com 59 O N E CO A S T

of Paradise The Royal Sands Koh Rong Cambodia Having visited many of the beautiful islands in the Gulf of Thailand and being awed at the tranquillity of especially Koh Kut I was more than interested when I received my invitation to The Royal Sands Resort on Koh Rong. Koh Rong, also known as Monkey Island, is the second largest island of Cambodia. Located about 25 KM from Sihanoukville and being only 15 km long from North to South, the island is mainly covered by jungle but boosts 43 km of unspoilt beaches with incredible white sands, coral reefs and diverse aquatic fauna.

livingculture Incredible Unspoilt Beaches Reports of the Royal Sands Resort and the remarkable beach directly in front seemed to be spectacularly written and this promise of paradise seemed far too good to be true, so it wasn’t without some excitement and trepidation that I started on my journey. The Royal Sands service for me started at Don Muang airport in Bangkok, whisked through the VIP Immigration channel it was a short but comfortable Minibus ride to the far side of the airport where no less than our stunning Cessna Citation private jet was waiting. Our host for the trip Mr. Luzi Matzig one of the main partners in Royal Sands Koh Rong was also our pilot and with a comfortable hour and 10 mins we were approaching Sihanoukville airport in Cambodia. Here again the right staff in the right place and
visa formalities were quickly passed. A short car ride and we arrived at the pier with the Royal sands luxury boat waiting. The boat ride was comfortable, and we coasted along over tranquil blue waters eagerly taking in the approaching island sights. Now with The Royal Sands resort in view it was becoming very apparent that the marketing was true. First from afar all you would see is a long white beach, and as we neared it was just incredibly beautiful, about 7.5Km long and stunning white sand with crystal clear water lapping at its edge. The beach and sand were immaculate, and I found out later that the Resort had specially imported a sand cleaning machine from Australia and early morning and late afternoon they would clean the whole beach keeping what was already an amazing beach absolutely to perfection.

Koh Rong until The Royal Sands opened its doors in December last year was only a well-kept back packers secret. The main small village is Koh Toch, which is basically the only place the public ferry stops off, has a colourful array of backpacker guesthouses, bars and cafes that until now gave the island its reputation. The Royal Sands has drastically changed that attitude, opening up a stunningly unknown Cambodian island with a 5 Star resort. This is the culmination of a vision from Luzi and his partners to build a complete and exclusive 5-star village, with designs incorporating high-quality and sustainable materials including teak, bamboo and limestone, with open-air venues for enjoying unspoilt views of the Gulf of Thailand and their legendary sunsets. We settled into our beautiful beachfront villa, there are 67 in total. The villas reflect Royal Sands commitment to providing an ambience of luxurious relaxation and calming inspiration. The bedrooms are spacious and positioned so as to allow guests to enjoy the best views from their beds. The bathrooms are equally spacious, featuring indoor and outdoor rain showers. Tropical, uncluttered décor provides a contemporary and relaxing feel. Each villa is freestanding and offers high-quality amenities. They are fitted with Super King-size beds. Sofas are located inside, with day-beds on the outdoor ‘sala’, offering guests a variety of options on which to relax. All villas offer outdoor ‘salas’, while others feature beachfront views and their own personal pools, but all built to give you that touch of privacy from your neighbouring guests.

Sand so pristine it squeaked underfoot Only metres away from our villa the beach was already calling and I took the opportunity to have a slow relaxing walk over the white sand with the clear water lapping close by. The sand was so amazingly clean and pristine it was as if I was the first person to set foot on it, each step producing a foot print and a light crunching sound almost the same as when you’d walk in fresh snow. I’ve honestly never had such incredibly virgin sand under foot. The resort has a full range of activities on and off site to ensure that there is something for everyone. We first took the invitation to the helicopter island tour and spent an exhilarating half an hour flying over the whole island and beautiful coastline. From the air you get a completely different perspective of the lush jungle covered mountains and the amazing beaches and coastline. The following day we chose to take trip into the Mangrove swamps and have a few hours gently kayaking through the quiet waters watching the local wildlife until we came out onto the estuary and had a break for lunch before heading back. Late that same day just before the amazing sunset we relaxed at the Spa with a professional massage, I chose the Thai style being my old time favourite and wasn’t disappointed. The Spa buildings are classic Bali style just oozing luxurious calmness and tranquillity.

Stepping through their solid timber doors you can leave the world far behind you. Senses Spa at The Royal Sands Koh Rong offers a range of traditional and contemporary therapies to calm the mind and energise the soul. Features include a semi open-air ‘sala’ for foot and Thai massages, an outdoor yoga ‘sala’ dedicated to the art of breathing & stretching and private rooms for more specialised therapies. I especially loved the glass bottom floors giving you a soothing view of the Koy Carp darting in the water below. Next to the Spa buildings was the fully equipped gym with excellent life fitness machines and weights, but that would have to wait for another visit as sadly, our time was nearly over, I would have loved to have tried that and some of the trekking, fishing or even scuba diving options available. Just a couple of wonderful days at The Royal Sands Koh Rong and you could feel the batteries charging again. There’s no stress here, no 7/11’s and certainly no ATM’s just an incredibly beautifully built resort on an unspoilt tropical island asking to be explored. There’s absolutely nothing not to be loved with the Royal Sands, luxurious accommodation, a 5-star restaurant with all the Asian & Western favourites, attentive but discreet staff, enough facilities and activities available for those eager to try and the most amazing beach that I have ever seen in my life.

shoes creating a stir globally‌ By Nagmani

T
here is no definite time limit as to what one might choose to do creatively in life. The only thing needed to realize this in a precise way is to keep exploring the multi-faceted aspects of one’s existence. As per this roughly conscious phenomenon believe it or not, there are certain tasks already predestined for us to perform wholeheartedly. Proof of this shining enigma is a famous Kuwaiti-born shoe designer Najeeba Hayat who earlier was far away from thinking of such an innovative thing for herself because her area of expertise was political science and she loved this subject a lot too. However, she always kept her other interest (that was mostly in the field of dramatic fashion) alive. In an exclusive interview with One Coast, we caught up with Hayat to find out what drove her to pursue a career in shoe design, what it means to her and much more. Hayat’s intense love of fashion made her obsessively follow high-profile designers like Miuccia Prada, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Tom Ford. This intuitive instinct led her to memorize fashion, think about it and draw the images of shoes all over her notebooks. She chose to design shoes because they held a particular place in her heart. “I felt there was so much heritage lost. Shoes had become so bland, simple, and formulaic as opposed to the adventurous, boundary-pushing, fantasy designs that defined the 1860s-1950s. I wanted more boots, more laces, more colors, more drama, and more excitement. So I started my own brand,” she said. Hayat saw a perfect tool in fashion to communicate her escapist tendencies, her follies as well as her passion. Soon after, she went to Arsutoria School in Milan to learn the nuts and bolts of pattern making. “I was fortunate to go to this school for my trade. You constantly have to learn how shoes are made (and spend 11 hours a day, every day, making them) in order to know how to design them meticulously,” she said. It was high time for Hayat to launch her label since she had full knowledge of designing footwear now. “I launched my label “Liudmila” in 2014. It was quite rewarding to see my shoe creations picked up by some of the most prestigious shops in the world such as Browns London and Isetan Tokyo,” she said. Since then, there was no looking back for Hayat, but she impartially admitted that what she has achieved so far hasn’t been easy by any means. “It’s not a very competitive O N E CO A S T
75
“It’s not a very competitive segment, but it’s a very monopolistic one. Initially, shops are very afraid or unwilling to take a chance on a new designer because they always fear that with shoes specifically, their clients don’t want to gamble. It’s a question of understanding how to make the buyers happy, and that’s the key to take not of if you want to make progress,” she said. Thanks to her gamut of inspiring ideas that come from Victorian illustrations, miniature paintings, observing the lives of schoolgirls and fabulous older women, Hayat has found her way to design amazing footwear. She tends to focus on dramatic, low heels. “I put up my own storybook, Liudmila spin on everyday Victorian shapes. I always have the tight ankle, the delicate points, the curving lines and the sense of atmosphere,” she said. More or less, she likes her brand to be considered exciting, different and intense that women can comfortably wear every day. “My shoes are replete with little precious details making them easily gel well with everything from street wear to Japanese avant-garde fashion,” she said. In order to make the best shoes, one definitely needs plenty of finest materials to begin with. Keeping this prerequisite in mind, she never compromises where she sources all of her leathers and fabrics from. “I source them from Italy. I tend to go for more adventurous materials like salmon and tilapia skins, hand-painted water snakes, custom-colored matte leathers, embroidered velvets, and digital-stamped nappas,” Hayat said. There is one more interesting thing that she adheres to no matter what. “I just love to challenge the idea of luxury by sometimes taking materials people would never believe are luxurious enough and creating beautiful, attractive objects with them,” she said. Women who constantly show a desire to buy her designed shoes are mainly those looking for something different. For them, it’s all about finding that something powerful enough to sprinkle a little magic into their lives while out having fun. They, she explained, want to feel at ease and comfortable but also look exciting and unique. “Every single shoe designer claims to design for a “strong sexy woman” and the market is filled with the same products. I’m more interested in being the dreamer, the escapist, and the fantasist. I feel a little bit of that girl exists in all of us,” Hayat said. “We all want to feel something more from time to time and that’s the only reason one should buy luxury. There’s no need to spend so much time, cost and energy making an object if it doesn’t give a sense of something special to your customers.” Muses in her life The role models and muses she often looks up to for inspiring thoughts include her mother, Hillary Clinton, and Edward Meadham.“Sometimes, I get inspired by influential characters like Sailor Moon, Gigi, Auntie Mame and Little Dorritt from movies of the same name,” Hayat said. It’s no wonder that her shoes have been worn by a few Victoria Secret models, Emily Ratajkowski, Chinese superstar Yang Mi and Bella Hadid. Another wish that Hayat would like to come true is when one of her idols from the nineties like Miuccia Prada (although she knows she would never be ready for it) or Naomi Campbell wears her designed shoes. “In fact, I get more excited seeing normal people integrate my shoes into their wardrobe because it’s the people who buy really understand the story behind it and appreciate the design. I get a lot of girls who would not normally be the luxury buyers buying the shoes for their weddings or as a very special treat. That’s more precious for me. I love seeing my designs loved and cherished because I work very hard to make 76 O N E CO A S T them so special,” she said.
Hayat’s take on Celebrity endorsement Although she buys into the cliché that the concept of celebrity endorsement matters for exposure, Hayat believes it’s ultimately the stores that are pushing your brand before the consumers will make a difference. In her view, when it comes to China, it’s a whole new market obsessed with the culture of celebrity mania. “Chinese celebrities still have this insane power to sell out an entire collection,” she said. Her SS18 collection is a pure representation of unadulterated optimism. It’s a fusion of the color scheme from Fantasia with Hillary Clinton’s hair scrunchies and a carnival atmosphere filled with cotton candy and ferris wheels festooned with lights. “I’ve used tons of crystal wheels, giant puffy scrunchies in holographic silks as well as crazy Dalmatian print snake skins,” she said.
For any brand be it the established one or the new one, Asia is a huge market to tap into. “Right now, I’m looking for expansion in the Asian market because there is so much to learn and gain from this part of the world,” she said. www.liudmilafootwear.com O N E CO A S T

just out A QUIET PLACE
John Krasinski, Emily Blunt A Quiet Place has a lot of hype about it heading into its release with the early buzz suggesting that Paramount had something special on its hands. However, nothing could've prepared me for how good this film is. Using a simple concept A Quiet Place blends horror with drama, and the result is one of the best films of the year. In a world overrun by unkillable monsters that hunt by sound, doing anything too loudly
just out BLOCKERS John Cena , Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz To be totally honest I wasn’t really expecting much from Blockers – although it is a comedy, the trailer was not amazing, filled with unfunny jokes and the title of the movie is a bit lame also. I point this out because I have been proved wrong.. It is one of the funniest comedies that we've seen in a few years. It's not the most original movie, being a teen sex comedy, but it really delivers.
can quickly turn fatal. However, while most of humanity seems to have been overtaken by the monsters, a man (Krasinski), his wife (Blunt), his son, and their deaf daughter have carved out lives for themselves on a secluded farm. The first thing that needs to be said about A Quiet Place is it is scary. In fact it's scary as hell. John Krasinski seems to have found his calling with slow-build tension switching to fantastic moments of terror. He takes his time paying off seeds planted earlier in the film. What’s clever is that they are no forced twists and turns as this is just a straight-up monster movie. Of course, there are jump scares, but they feel earned and the characters generally don't
The film begins by introducing us to parents Lisa (Mann), Mitchell (Cena), and Hunter (Barinholtz), who are all brought together when their daughters become best friends on their first day of school. Because the parents are all different people, they don't exactly click at first, which makes the daughters grow closer. The story skips to high school, the parents are all living very different lives with their growing kids: Lisa is a single mom terrified about Julie leaving her to go away to college; Mitchell is a sports freak and Hunter is an outcast, being divorced because of an affair he committed. The relationship between the three adults is casual but it gets taken to the next level on prom night.
make stupid decisions that put their lives at risk which pays off for the movie in general. A Quiet Place looks gorgeous as well and delivers a visual atmosphere that's pretty much unmatched. This movie is filled with tension and suspense from the very first minute but it is also far deeper and emotional than the traditional horror movie. Gripping, and nail-bitingly tense, John Krasinski's first foray into horror is an instant classic that every horror fan needs to see.
The parents discover that their daughters have made a sex pact, promising each other that they will all lose their virginity on the same night which of course leads to a bit of freaking out. So they parents decide to cock block their children. Pretty much every scene is funny from here until the films end. The three leads are excellent as the crazy parents and the daughters are just as good. It often feels like teen sex comedies are everywhere, but quality will always shine through, and Blockers is proof. It helps that the movie has totally come out of nowhere, but at the end of the day it is well made and very very funny and I am glad I was wrong about it.
focustop movies & tv
just out THE COMMUTER Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson kicking someone's ass is pretty much an annual event at this point. Whilst this is not the worst Liam Neeson movie it is fair to say this concept has been executed better in the past. Michael MacCauley (Neeson) is your average commuter, who's about to have a very bad day. Approached by a woman (Farmiga), he's given a choice: do "one small thing" for a huge payout, or just walk away none the wiser. What begins as a simple experiment turns into a much more twisted conspiracy, pitting Michael against the clock in the name of saving his family.
just out TOMB RAIDER
Alicia Vikander , Domenic West Most properties will always get a second chance in the entertainment business. What didn't work the first time will always get a fresh start. That cycle is the only way to describe Tomb Raider, which started as a video game for the PlayStation, had many video game sequels, inspired a movie (starring Angelina Jolie) which got a sequel, was rebooted in 2013 as a reintroduction to young Lara Croft, and now sees that series getting a movie version starring Alicia Vikander in the role.
He has little information as to how to complete his task, but if he doesn't, he'll lose everything, and everyone, he loves. The best aspect is the fact that Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra are so familiar with this sort of film that they can practically make it in their sleep.Thankfully, both are on top form as Neeson's lead is charismatic while also being a total badass; and Collet-Serra's camera loves him for it. There are even a couple of action beats in The Commuter that are hair-raising. One of which is a particularly brilliant fight between Neeson and a fellow rider. They're a team that works, and the only thing that could stand in their way is a bad script. Which is where the worst parts of The Commuter come into play. If this script fleshed out its conspiracy just a little more, the film could have
Your interest in this latest chapter may vary depending on how many hours you've logged following Lara Croft on her various adventures. Director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) treats Tomb Raider as Batman Begins for Lara Croft (Vikander), introducing our adventurer as a bike messenger who hasn't yet accepted her destiny as a global expeditioner. Which is a fine approach. The script tells us that Lara's a thrill-seeker and she's compensating for the disappearance of her father, Lord Richard Croft (West) who disappeared when she was little. Soon clues begin to surface that Lord Richard was on to something bigger. His work surrounded the ancient burial of a mythical queen who possessed supernatural powers. Richard tracked Himiko to the middle of the Devil's Sea. Now his daughter, desperate to prove her father might still be alive, follows his trail, finding danger and obstacles along the way.
been a action delight. Even more harmful to The Commuter is the fact that the first two acts are a bit of a slog. We're given too many red herrings, and not enough valid pieces of information to truly get invested in the film. But when that third act really kicks in it gets quite intense. If The Commuter reduced the character count and if the film gave us the information needed to solely focus on the action, and threw in a couple more fights and set-pieces, we could have had something like a Taken level Liam Neeson. Instead, the film falters and wastes the likes of Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, and Sam Neill in roles that are barely on screen. If you can get a reduced price ticket to see The Commuter, it's a fun ride. It's just a shame there's not enough thrills and mystery to bring this one to the end of the line.
Alicia Vikander is very good as Lara Croft, which ends up being a very physical role. Sometimes you are thinking it should be named 100 ways to beat up a movie star. The problem with the movie is for all of its dedication to breathing life into the game, it does not really give a genuine rush that comes with watching an action movie. The film also competently restages sequences from the game, so the set pieces lack invention. Also archaeological puzzles, which are fun to crack when you are controlling Lara Croft in the game, are silly when translated to the screen. When it comes to movies adapted from video games, it always comes down to, "Is it more fun to actually play the game, or is it more fun to sit in a theater and watch the game be played for you?" Tomb Raider is definitely in the “Play it “section.

RockPool
RockPool reflects the soothing calm of its ocean location. Perched on the hillside, the sophisticated restaurant offers a stunning visual Pacific feast to accompany brilliant Chef Lisa’s delightful gastronomic feats. The RockPool kitchen regularly creates new featured dishes to provide guests with an everevolving selection of flavor combinations ensuring regular guests can look forward to something new each time they dine. They also provide a blackboard specials changing with the seasons to take advantage of the freshest local foods throughout the year. Executive Chef Lisa Lang’s well-balanced menu reflects the relaxed resort atmosphere with a casual all-day dining menu consisting of light, fresh cuisine. Crisp salads and tartare, comfort sandwiches, wraps and burgers are featured along with a carefully selected range of regional Thai cuisine. We highly recommend the Lamb Massaman. First Sunday of each month there is a Sunday Brunch, every other Sunday they have introduced the new sharing plates comprising baby chicken, racks of lamb and vegetables. For a heartier selection the grill kitchen flames local seafood and imported meats and a sample from RockPool’s distinguished wine list helps make the decision-making process that much more enjoyable.

Nike Footstickers Take barefoot running to the next level with these amazing Nike Footstickers The debate about the advantages/dangers of barefoot running may be raging on, but some have already made up their minds that barefoot is the natural choice and are forging ahead with the next generation of barefoot footwear. If you can call stickers that you wear on your bare soles “footwear.” Designed by Frieke Severs for Nike EMEA, Footstickers are just what they sound like. They cover the contact points of your feet and serve as a protective second skin. The rest of your foot is left to bend, conform and rebound like it’s completely naked. Here’s how the benefits of the design are described: “There are many advantages of bare feet sporting: better motion control, more feeling in your feet and direct floor contact, etc. In this way you are more grounded and more aware of your feet and movements. It’s also a good way of training for stronger feet. But beware a disadvantage is the risk of injuries, you can easily twist or slip without the conventional show support.
