Another jaw dropping collection by Burberry! The

latest collection by Burberry called “A Patchwork” is a series of individually designed and named bags. Besides, the womenswear collection features a mix of patterns and textures influenced by British artists, musicians and history. As part of the collection the latest additions to Burberry’s accessories collection, The Patchwork and The Buckle Boot are so glam and instantly strike a chord with the fashionistas.

The Patchwork: There is a collection of bags inspired by the belt buckle from the brand’s iconic trench coat. Each oneof-a-kind bag is individually designed and named. With a variety of colors, textures, fabrics and embellishments, each bag features a polished buckle and can be worn as a shoulder or crossbody, or carried as a clutch. The Buckle Boot: Inspired by the distinctive patchwork details present throughout the collection and by the classic Wellington boot, the structured ankle boot comes in snakeskin and rubberized leather with a raised heel and accentuated tread.

Women love to wear regal clothes while attending special occasions. They feel sophisticated but more importantly empowered. This is what the Singapore-born Paris-based designer Andrew GN captured in his AW16-17 collection with some dresses even though they looked more like military uniforms, most seemed quite vivid and textured in colors like Russian red, Burgundy, navy blue, bottle-green, powder-pink and white. With silhouettes like feather hem blouses and silk dresses that reflected a youthful spirit, the collection struck a chord with today’s women. He did a smart job by complementing the collection with evening dresses that were designed with fabrics like tulle,Victorian lace and brocade.

Practice Makes Perfect One Coast has been bending over backwards to find the best Yoga studios in all your favourite destinations 22

T

he number of people practicing yoga has risen by 50% in the last 4 years; it is one of the 5 fastest growing leisure activities and the International Sport and Leisure survey now puts it 4th in list of most popular fitness pursuits – a big leap from its original interpretation as ‘alternative stretching’. But all of this is hardly surprising when you consider the multitude of benefits that the practice boasts. Improved flexibility is one of the most obvious – this doesn’t just mean that you look better as you struggle to touch your toes but it also means that you are less likely to suffer knee and lower back pain caused by tight hamstrings and hips. Alongside flexibility, instead of at the expense of it, regular practice tones and strengthens muscles through body weight poses meaning that you don’t only feel better but look it too! In fact, the physical benefits alone are numerous; better bone health, posture, spine protection, increased blood flow…the list goes on. However these gains alone do not explain yoga’s popularity – many fitness regimes boast similar physical improvements. So what makes yoga so unique? The secret lies within your head. Proven improvements in mental and emotional health ensure that yoga becomes, not just a pastime, but a way of life. Studies show that regular practice dramatically increases serotonin levels and can improve depression. Continued focus and calm, especially in Vinyasa style yoga, have been shown to directly improve coordination, reaction time and concentration in other aspects of your life. Restorative practices like Savasana and Asana allow downtime for your nervous system improving quality of sleep and releasing stress. So now that you’ve been convinced to give it a go the only question is, in such a crowded market, where should you practice? Because, despite a vast array of options some of the best yoga studios remain well-kept secrets.Whether you’re after a thoughtful, gentle practice, a yoga community to join, or a drop-in exercise fix, One Coast have sought out the very best studios for your needs.

Vikasa Yoga Retreat, Koh Samui Vikasa yoga style was created by founder and pioneer Konstantin Miachin in order to raise human consciousness and promote holistic health and growth. The focus at Vikasa is as much on the spiritual journey as the physical. Kosta is a firm believer in the power and inevitability of change; he sees yoga as an unfolding process and as such the concept behind the Vikasa style is constant evolution. Vikasa offers a fully established and welcoming yoga community for those who live locally or who are merely visiting. The array of classes is comprehensive; each day begins with a ‘Complete’ class consisting of a mix of meditation and vikasa yoga, incorporating new breathing techniques and poses. Following this there are usually 4-5 different style classes throughout the morning and evening including; flow, vinyasa, power, hatha, pranayama, ashtanga, yin and, most fun, acroyoga! For those wanting to branch out Vikasa also offers more specific tutorage of meditation, singing bowls, candle gazing and Pilates. And if the classes themselves don’t hook you then the location is sure to! Classes are held in a large open air pavilion, perched cliff-side overlooking the bay of Chaweng. The pavilion is kept optimally cool with sea breezes and numerous fans and is equipped with every convenience a budding yogi enthusiast could need. Vikasa is unique in that, as well as offering daily classes and yoga retreats; it is also an internationally recognised and renowned school for yoga teacher training. The school encourages all levels of experience to try their hand believing that all you need to do to be successful is show up with an open mind and do your best. For post-yoga sustenance try the Life café offering a great selection of wholesome yet indulgent dishes. The beetroot cashew mince raw spring rolls are unresistable for an instant taste hit or spoil yourself with the guilt free banana ice cream made without milk, cream or sugar but somehow still delicious! www.vikasayoga.com 24

Bodytree Studio, Abu Dhabi While there are plenty of yoga classes available at gyms and fitness studios in the capital, establishments like Bodytree are few and far between. Offering a comprehensive wellness studio focused on holistic health, Bodytree promotes techniques to maximise client’s potential for strength, flexibility and injury prevention. Bodytree strives to be at the forefront of the wellness scene in the UAE – constantly improving and adapting its offerings to suit the needs of a varied clientele. From weekly workshops and popup classes to flow in the dark yoga and hypnobirthing, there is no question that Bodytree offers something unique in the yoga world. Their core focus however will always remain a combination of yoga, pilates and dance classes. Founded by the owners of Soma pilates and Yogatree studios, the combination of these practices is essential in the individuality of Bodytree and its ability to provide a holistic approach to exercise, focusing on mind and body education. Catering to all ages, Bodytree allows the whole family to achieve wellness goals, whether it be through children’s ballet tutorials, pre and post-natal offerings or intense barre sessions! For me the standout feature of Bodytree lies with the instructors – clearly the philosophy of the studios does not stop with the founders. Evidently highly trained, motivated and knowledgeable; the studio instructors ensure that the well-being of every participant is of highest priority. Relatively small classes mean that instruction can be personalised and students feel comfortable to reach out of their comfort zone without fear of failure or judgement. Such expertise and attention is hard to find in the rapidly growing and sometimes profit orientated business of wellness but it is certainly a welcome discovery. As with all good wellness establishments, Bodytree offers a fantastic selection of nutritious treats at Nectar juice bar. Utilising seasonal, organic and locally grown produce, Nectar carefully crafts a delicious range of powerpacked smoothies and juices. Try the ‘Nut and Bolt’ which combines organic pumpkin and flax seeds, homemade peanut butter, honey, vanilla and banana for an undeniable post exercise lift.

Yoga Elements, Bangkok Starting in 2001, Yoga Elements has quickly became well known and loved throughout Bangkok for their personal approach to teaching and high standards of instruction. Founder Adrian Cox is a dedicated practitioner and gifted teacher who blends yoga, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and trance to create holistic experiences of body-mind. Co-director ShiangYing Cox is a specialist in mind-body education, based on the teaching of BodyMind Centering and Hanna Somatics. She works with people using yoga, meditation and insights drawn from neurophysiology and psychology. Both Adrian and ShiangYing run Yoga Elements workshops and trainings throughout the world and have certified numerous teachers throughout Asia, Europe, and the US. Yoga Elements consists of focus on yoga, breath and meditation. This well established studio seeks to assist individuals and groups to develop awareness; discover their potential and cultivate a healthy body-mind connection. Offering a uniquely Thai teaching approach, Yoga Elements provides deep and transformative learning experiences such as carefully chosen workshops such as ‘Hatha Alignment’ or ‘Yogic secrets of using your body effectively’ to ensure meaningful self-discovery. Unusually the studio rejects rigid yoga dogma and absolute rules and instead looks for what is possible for each individual.Their methodology and attitude is woven through each and every class, workshop, or training. The bright and airy studio overlooks the busy Sukhumvit road, thankfully though good quality soundproofing ensures that your practice can remain undisturbed.

www.yogaelements.com

Kata Yoga, Phuket Kata Yoga studio offers 90 minute classes in Hot yoga or Hatha Yoga Asanas in a well-equipped studio, 40m from Kata beach. The Hatha style aims to achieve the balance of energies through the union of the sun and the moon; ‘Ha’ meaning sun; ‘Tha’ meaning moon and yoga meaning union. Despite some controversy, hot yoga has long been a wellregarded style of yoga; followers insist that the heat allows for a deeper flexibility and more intense cardiovascular workout. Detoxification is also a key attraction of this style as the heavy sweating is thought to flush out toxins from within the body. Throughout the classes gentle static poses are performed for purposes of purifying and strengthening the mind, body, and spirit. The instructors encourage you to embrace the 40’c heat as they gently adjust your positions. Despite the initial embarrassment participants quickly forget that they are sweating profusely and become engaged in the positions. Kata Yoga’s state of the art studio has been created with innovative technology combining radiant heat panels and a dehumidifying system specially designed to allow participants to benefit from the heat without being overcome by the sensation. The panels are specifically designed to heat objects (people) and not the air you breathe; which many people find uncomfortable. Contemporary, purpose designed sticky yoga mats and towels are provided for your comfort so that nothing can distract you from the intention of your practice. One thing they do warn you is…be prepared to sweat!

Jiggers Co.,Ltd. Simon Brown originally from Twickenham in the UK first started his bar consultancy business in London, this was 2001 when Professional bar supplies became a major part of his life. He placed experienced bar consultants at various 5 star hotels and resorts primarily in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia. Professional bar equipment was essential for the Consultants to carry out their training as virtually all these locations lacked a local bar supplies company. Having seen this large void, Simon set up a bar supplies company in Dubai in 2006.This was the perfect time to set up such a business in this hugely growing market and the geographical location made it easy to trade elsewhere in the Middle East, Africa and Near East. The business grew for several years becoming a well-known and established supplier in Dubai and indeed the Gulf region, providing all the major barware for most for the leading new hotels, bars and restaurants. Simon met Angkarn his wife in 2010 proposing to her at The Peninsula Bangkok just a few days after they met. "I still can’t remember if she actually said yes!” He said, "both of us have three daughters through previous relationships, this brought us even closer together as we shared so many similar experiences!" Angkarn moved to Dubai shortly after their marriage and helped Simon immensely with the hard work of visiting so many hotels, restaurants and bars sampling so many great and awful cocktails and thus selling them the tools to make them. In 2014, Simon and Angkarn decided they had completed what was possible in this location and decided to create a similar company in the Far East. Bangkok was an ideal location to create such a vehicle as the market was just entering the Cocktail Culture phase and no-one held stock or offered a complete range of bar operating supplies. “Jiggers Co Ltd” was born in early 2015, based in Bangkok they hold stock of a wide range of professional bar operating equipment, that’s used in many of the leading hotels and resorts throughout the world, much of which is either manufactured in various Asian based factories or indeed custom made locally in Thailand. Jiggers also brand barware for some of the world’s leading spirit and beer brands. The company grew quickly within the local Thai market place where they amassed some premium customers both in Bangkok and indeed most of the leading resorts in Phuket, Samui, Chiang Mai and internationally, both regionally in Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma and also in the Indian Ocean after they gained notoriety in providing outstanding equipment to numerous existing resorts. Jiggers are about to provide a superb high end range of equipment to a new exciting resort opening late this year in the Indian ocean. In the past few months Jiggers have re-entered the Gulf market, providing equipment to some exclusive hotels in Doha and the Omani upcoming resort of Salalah. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai are proving to be a growing market for Jiggers where they previously only had associations and are about to ship some of their Thai manufactured products for the opening to a very high profile Downtown Dubai hotel.

Simon Brown (Director)

Previous knowledge and established relationships within the UAE market has given Jiggers a huge advantage to trade again in this fast growing region and they are looking forward to future exciting projects there and indeed some near Jiggers home base here in Thailand.

Ettore Bugatti’s eye-catching capsule collection…

The Ettore Bugatti luxury clothing line is hotting things up with a special capsule collection dedicated to the Bugatti Chiron, the brand's latest super sports car. This exclusive capsule range composed of twelve pieces and accompanying eyewear was just unveiled alongside the new 1,500 hp-high-performance car during the 86th Geneva International Motor Show. Through its printed motifs, workmanship and finishing touches, it evokes the unmistakable styling lines of the Chiron, named after Louis Chiron, a legendary racing driver who won virtually all the major Grand Prix for the brand in the 1920s and 1930s. The crowning glory of this collection is the driver's jacket made from sturdy calf leather with stitching on the back that depicts the seats of the Bugatti Chiron. Extremely soft to the touch, this jacket features the iconic blue duotone, the brand's color scheme of choice, and is Bugatti through and through from the use of clever artisanal techniques, such as hand polishing, to the choice of truly exquisite materials. The four colored T-shirts, designed to give a look that combines comfort and style, flaunt their links to the motoring world through the Bugatti Chiron print on the chest. The eye wear and cap round off the Bugatti gentleman's look, suggesting a lover of fine things who admires how the company strives for perfection in the tiniest of details, whether on cars or clothes.

Relish the sound of Winter Symphony… Blugirl interprets winter magic through a symphony of styles and emotions that live on lightness and a renovated sense of contemporary. It combines and overlays tactile fabrics to delicate transparencies, cocoon volumes to linear geometries and flashes of primary colors to trompel’oeil patterns with a décontracté allure. A Nordic flair transpires in total white looks featuring games of layering that enliven the monochromatic progression. Tulle dresses with bright silver embroideries and felted lace are presented with oversize bouclé coats or lapin and Mongolian furs, wrapping around airy silhouettes. Weaving stitches and laced details, inlay works and Norwegian jacquards create three-dimensional effects in dresses and cowl-neck handmade pullovers, lightened by soft yarns. Elegance transforms into atmosphere while femininity becomes an effortless and free concept that experiments bold combinations, offering a modern interpretation of classic codes. Figurative prints portraying Alaskan landscapes are worn as a painting framed with grey accents. From nature to the city: Regimental style combines equestrian and bon chic patterns in all over prints, laid on white or blue backgrounds, to uniform decorations, coats and capes with golden buttons and Navy embroideries. Two-tone roses blooming from black on romantic cady featuring fluid and ethereal tailoring are inlayed or thread embroidered on feminine cardigans. Noir passe-partout in cocktail dresses with see-through construction, lace inserts, rhinestones hems and fringes are revealed, like precious jewels, under scenic throws and embroidered furs. Hints of white appear on ruffled blouses, Victorian collars and fur pompoms stud romantic silhouettes like delicate cameos.

Need Focus, But No Time 4 Tools to become super focused anywhere, anytime! The modern world is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. I believe more and more, it will become imperative that we all learn how to successfully Hack our Embodied-Interface — for sustained performance as we push the frontiers of human and technological excellence. In other words, to keep pace, how well we are able to manage our inner game, will be the measure of success or defeat in the future. Nowhere is this more evident than the shortening of attention spans in the modern digital age. Researchers in Canada found that the average human attention span has fallen to date, from 12 seconds in 2000, down to about eight-seconds. This gradual decline in attention coincides with the mobile revolution. If you have a website for example, and you don’t capture a prospects attention in three-seconds, they are on to the next thing. Attention in other words, is becoming a scarce commodity. As we continue to progress, and as more and more vies for our attention, it is likely that attention spans will become even shorter. If attention spans are becoming shorter, then it begs the question, how are we able to spend an hour watching Game of Thrones, or run around focused on finding Pokemon’s? It seems to me, that the only time we are able to attend to something these days, outside of our obvious choice too — is also how much that activity sparks our sympathetic nervous system. In other words, we are constantly looking for a shot of inner caffeine. This is not surprising of course, as we are hardwired to seek out novelty, and that’s a sure fire way to fire up our adrenaline. But all this addiction to quick, short term highs, comes at a price. Just look around and you will see that everything annoys us, from the frustration of standing in a line at the store, to sitting in traffic. The unintended consequence of novelty, is the ever increasing need for speed and convenience. We are in fact, on an all-day adrenaline high. When we finally get home in the evening, most of us feel like we have been running a marathon, and all we want to do is collapse in front of our television set. At least this is how I was feeling, and I knew I had to do something about it. So I implemented four strategies into my life, that I could do throughout the day, without it taking away from me actively engaging in the modern world — because like most of us, I am a sucker for technology too, and living fast and furious is fun.

body&mindmindful lifestyle

Focus on The Steps of a Task Just like everyone else these days I get easily distracted. Coming back to what I was supposed to be doing can be difficult at times. Research now shows it takes 25-minutes to get back into the swing of things after you’ve been interrupted. Before I start any task now that’s important, I take two things for granted. Firstly, I am guaranteed to be interrupted by someone, its Murphy's Law. Secondly, that I will make the time to write down the steps that are relevant to the task I am about to tackle, and prime myself to come back to my list of steps, should a distraction occur. It only takes a couple of minutes to write down the steps for an important task. They don’t have to be in depth, just single words, or one-liners. As I proceed in the task, I tick them off one by one. If suddenly someone interrupts me, I know when I come back to the task at hand where I left off, and what the next step on the task should be. Posture Up Throughout the day I do what I call a quick body check-in. How am I standing right now? I especially take note of this after a stressful encounter with a co-worker. Do my muscles feel stiff, is there tightness in my chest? I immediately choose an opposite posture, making my body stand lose, and shake it off. If things aren’t going right with a project - am I standing dejected, slumped over? I then straighten up, pull my shoulders back, and pick my head up. You see, what I have learned is how you show up really matters. It matters to how you think. Changing your body posture, changes your biology, which in turn changes how you think about yourself. Taking note of how your posture is at any given moment, gives you a clue to how your mind is doing. Don’t like the body posture you’re in, or realise it is detrimental to the situation you find yourself in? Forget changing your thinking, change your body posture to one that is the most optimal for the situation you find yourself in — and the thinking mind will take care of itself.

If suddenly you find yourself engaging with SEFT, giving it a story, a narrative — then gently remind yourself to come back to breathing “Hey Rodney breath now”. Repeat, repeat, repeat, until you are at your destination. Do that every time you find yourself in a mundane moment, in the car, in a line at the store etc., and before you know it, you have accomplished a lot of mindful training throughout the day. Consciously Choose to Breath More Yes, yes, I know, we are all breathing all of the time, otherwise we would be dead. But then there’s breathing unconsciously, and consciously. Being conscious of your breath throughout the day, gives you clues to how well you manage your energy, as well as your emotions. Whenever I am stressed out, my breathing becomes shallow, and fast paced. Breathing like that unattended, makes me more stressed out, and saps my energy. By intentionally focusing on my breath in those moments, by making each in and out breath the same length — I am able to get a handle on both my energy and my emotions. We know from research that our breathing is affected when we are stressed out. Our fight and flight response kicks in (there’s that sympathetic nervous system again), and gets us ready for a fight. But as we all know, most of these ‘fights’ in life are not life and death. Staying in that ‘fight’ response for too long, or over and over again, is detrimental to your health. By consciously focusing on your inhale, and allowing the exhale to take its course — you invoke the calming effects of your parasympathetic nervous system (the opposite to your fight/flee/freeze system). Get Your GAME On The great thing about the tools I just described above is that, no one but you knows you are using them. They can be applied anywhere, anytime. Seen that I love acronyms here is another handy one to help you remember to actively apply these four tools in your life;

Mindfulness-in-Action Who has time for meditation? I don’t. So I take it upon myself to practice moments of mindfulness throughout the day — times like walking from one office to another, or driving to a meeting. These are all moments we take for granted, but they are great moments simply to be mindful, slow down, and focus on your breath.

Mindfulness isn’t a complicated thing to achieve (it does take practice though). Simply, you want to be aware of the present moment, allow whatever is inside, such as sensations, emotions, feelings and thoughts to arise (SEFT is a handy acronym for this), while watching them with curiosity. They are neither right nor wrong — they just are.

• •

Ground yourself in writing down relevant steps for a task to achieve a specific outcome. Change the Attitude of your body posture, to change how you feel about yourself in certain situations. Be Mindful in action in the small mundane things in life — and with enough practice, you will be able to be mindful in the big stressful things life throws at you. Take time to Exhale. Remember to breathe when in a tight spot.

Now go get your GAME on!

Personal Mastery through the Art of Movement Famous for its golden beaches and incredible seafood restaurants, Mae Rum Peung beach in Rayong also has another rather newer attraction for those looking for wellness, mindfulness and nutrition for the soul,Tree Roots Retreat. The founder, a native from the Island of Jersey, firmly believes a place is made by the people who envisioned it and by the people who visit it, positive energy and positive souls are the pre requisites for entry into this retreat. Positive Energy and Positive Souls are the pre requisites for entry into this Retreat. Designed as a sanctuary where one can immerse heart and soul into the study of mindfulness and mastery of oneself through movement,Tree Roots will show you how to start living in the now, ever present of your surroundings. Mindfulness in action can be taught through many forms of exercise and here they explore a variety of them such as yoga, fly movement, boxing and the flow of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Starting the day with a yoga fly session with Coach Lynnie in their well-equipped open air movement centre overlooking the tropical greenery of the retreat is certainly a quick lesson in where your body needs to improve on flexibility and core strength. As she takes you through some intense stretching in the warm up, you will soon be flying in the hammock setting the tone for a powerful class. Performing positions in a flowing fashion you will push your body to its limits, flipping into inverted postures on the silk hammocks you will experience weightlessness and enjoy the final cool down called the “cocoon” guaranteed to be so relaxing you will doze off. You don’t’ always need calm and candles to meditate After a short break one can then move swiftly onto the movement class where you will be reminded of the two most important parts of the next hour, to smile and keep breathing. Regardless of the intensity of the work out, the exhale will always centre and calm you, and over time will quiet the thoughts and settle the body. The entire hour requires flexibility and endurance as you move diagonally across the gym in a variety of hops, rolls and crawls, all designed to teach you how to move like you used too in your youth and soon you will be using your breath to overcome physical challenges. When does the mindfulness in action and meditation start a client asks, “when in the last 40 minutes have you thought about work” the coach replies. Only a smile is returned. You don’t always need calm and candles to meditate. The intensity of this class prepares you for the next part of the Tree Roots Retreat experience, Crazy Monkey Defense.

Martial Arts without Philosophy is just Violence “Martial arts without philosophy is just violence” is a perfect mantra to repeat as you rub down your tired muscles in preparation for the crazy monkey mindfulness in action class. Even though boxing gloves are worn, there is never a feeling that you will be hurt, the system teaches sustainable movement that people can continue to practice as they age, with sessions evolving more on your own personality and needs than a set system. Crazy monkey offers people a self-preservation aspect whilst learning about mindfulness with a solid curriculum designed to improve both mental and physical ability with a no-nonsense and practical approach to today’s threat of violence. Spirit House Graveyard If after three hours of yoga, movement and CM boxing you still have energy to burn then Tree Roots has an afternoon package designed to give you an early and solid night’s sleep. The energy trail was developed by the resident GM who combines his passion for fitness with nature trails. He will lead the way up the steep 6km trail past the famous “spirit house graveyard” to the top of the mountain where the best views in Rayong and a swing await you. The entire 3-hour experience is made even more enjoyable by the amazing views, fauna and flora. The water melon station 3/4 of the way up is also a very welcoming sight! Tree Roots will open a new path to exploring your Inner Warrior. The end of the day will leave you with a strong spiritual feeling, the breathing exercise, the cardio, the overall focus on mindfulness in action are all designed to inspire positive change. At Tree Roots the focus is unlike the traditional retreat to be found in Thailand. The personal touches evident everywhere and the concept of serenity and personal mastery through cardio intense activities is a refreshing approach to taking on the challenges of life and we hope Tree Roots will open a new path to exploring your inner warrior. Elsie Evans One Coast Magazine would like to welcome Elsie Evans to this issues ‘About Her’ Elsie originally from Scotland who even after 3 decades in Thailand has certainly not lost her Scottish appeal is one of Bangkok’s famous and wellknown artists. Elsie is revered for not only being an amazing artist but having the professional ability to be able to pass on and fine tone these skills in others. Self-effacing, modest with that touch of Scottish humour, Elsie is always open to new ideas and inspiration. Elsie is a free spirit who has found her own path to artistic enlightenment. Along the way Elsie has mastered a number of techniques and styles that one day she might call her own. That journey of discovery as she says has probably been the hardest and at the same time the most rewarding too. After the long term success of her art school (Attic Studios) in the heart of Sukhumvit Bangkok Elsie is now expanding with a new Retreat Studio in Rayong.

Elsie welcome to One Coast can you first tell us a little about and when you moved from Scotland to Thailand? Yes, I moved here with my husband and one small baby in 1987, proceeded to have three more, all boys. Been here really ever since, had a short stint in Jakarta but came back in 2006 and opened Attic Studios. OK we’ve heard a little about your Attic Studios but could you explain to our readers what it really is? Attic Studios is a place where anyone can go and enjoy making art. It’s not about creating a masterpiece but more that anyone of any nationality or ability can participate and enjoy the process of being creative. Currently I have students from 4 to 75 years of age. Attic Studios is in Sukhumvit Soi 31, has 3 floors and two complete studios. You can drop in or take a membership. There are classes for adults on Tuesday to Friday and all day Sunday, kids are on Saturday. In which style of art do you teach? I do specialize in oil painting but I teach any type of art. I try not to stereo type people to some style of art. Personally I do not like being told what to do and so I encourage people to discover their passion, this often means trying out a few materials and styles until you find what you want to do. Usually everyone is doing something different, and I expect a student to tell me if they are not enjoying themselves. It’s all about having fun while learning. ...and of course enjoying the peace of mind art can bring. Do you only teach in Bangkok? No I take students often abroad to Bali Indonesia and Burma for example. Over the years I have gained so much from visiting new locations and I taught quite a few times down at the beach or in the countryside. This was where I started getting inspiration to open a new studio in Rayong. Students can now choose to paint in a city studio or come choose the beach and countryside. So explain a little about this new studio, you say it is in Rayong? Exactly it is a few hundred meters off the beach in Hat Mae Rum Phueng Beach which is Rayong County and Rayong City only being 15km away. I have purpose built an Art Studio with bungalows onsite so that people wishing to paint or draw beautiful Thai rural countryside or a typical beach scene just have to get here. I take care of everything else. And I get to live there too! I regularly have students from abroad who paint with us for months at a time. Now they have another option. City life can be stressful at times!! I know. Where else have you taken students? I have taken students on plein air painting trips to various places. Probably my favourite is Inlay Lake in Myanmar but I regularly take students out for day trips too around Bangkok. There is also so much wonderful scenery within 3 kilometres of the studio in Rayong. The diversity is incredible. You can see paddy fields, jungles, beach, hills all within a 5-minute trip. 50

With the eyes of the world watching Yas Marina Circuit for the Abu Dhabi GP, how do you handle the pressure? “No doubt the expectations we place on ourselves, in addition to those of our shareholders and stakeholders, is considerable. But it's very important we never be complacent and we always look to improve and innovate. So it’s a very productive type of pressure, the positive kind. Also, we work as a very strong, unified team both within Yas Marina Circuit and across all Abu Dhabi Stakeholders, this always helps in pressured environments”. How important is the FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX to Yas Marina Circuit, and to the city of Abu Dhabi? Why is having the last race of the season important? “Being the biggest event of the year, the buzz and the excitement is always electric. It’s important that we present Abu Dhabi successfully on the world stage and that’s what we try to do better and better, year after year. It’s an honour for us to deliver an event on this scale and be responsible for that delivery at Yas Marina Circuit.” “The Grand Prix not only showcases Abu Dhabi to the world but also presents as a ‘call to action’ for visitors and potential visitors who know we’re on the map but whom need a reason to travel. It’s really important that these visitors have a fantastic weekend and this is what matters the most, more important that whether we are the last race of the season or not. What’s key is that we have a thrilling weekend both on and off track and that all our fans leave with every intention to return.” Now in its 8th year as F1 Grand Prix hosts at Yas Marina Circuit, what new additions can fans expect? “Every year we look to improve and build on the previous year’s success. Obviously what happens on track is key for us. We like to position ourselves as a very modern Grand Prix, so we like to push on the digital and technology side. Our hugely popular YasHUB smartphone app continues to enhance and improve the customer experience on the ground, giving our visitors immediate and real-time access to what’s happening across the race weekend. This year we will also introduce ‘AskYAS’ within the YasHUB app, which provides a real-time chat support function for customers looking for information.” “Also with your F1® ticket this year, you will get free access to Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld, making the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix a great Yas Island Experience." What are the biggest lessons learned since Abu Dhabi’s first GP? “The emphasis on detail is really important to ensure that the weekend happens absolutely as planned. It also places us in the best position to manage the unexpected. The other thing I’ve learnt is the importance of customer focus, understanding why we’re doing this. It has to be a brilliant customer experience. We have a customer satisfaction survey across our race weekend, as well as a post-event survey, and it’s really important that we get the customer feedback so that we continue to grow and better develop our customer experience.” 52

Pole Position For the 8th consecutive year, Yas Marina Circuit will host the 2016 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Taking place on the 25th – 27th November, it is the Middle East’s biggest international sporting event and the final stop on the tour for another exciting F1 season. As one of the UAE’s jewels in the crown for a region famed for its eye-popping architectural wonders, Yas Marina Circuit is believed to be the most expensive F1 track ever built, with a purported cost in 2009 in excess of $1 billion. Last time around, a sell-out crowd of more than 60,000 fans showed up for the world’s only twilight race, and this year the venue could potentially decide the prestigious F1 driver’s championship title once again. One Coast Magazine sat down with Al Tareq Al Ameri, CEO at the iconic venue as he prepares for his third term in charge and third Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, to discuss preparations, expectations and the challenges ahead. O N E CO A S T

53

With it looking to be another sell-out event this year, how many spectators do you expect to see over the course of the weekend? “Over the Grand Prix weekend we’ll see 60,000 people from more than 170 countries soaking up the history, technology, glamour, bravery and skills associated with Formula 1®. Ever since we hosted the first day-night Grand Prix in 2009, we have seen incredible scenes unfold at Yas Marina Circuit – and I’m sure this year will be no different. We predict that we will once again sell out especially with the After-Race Concerts line-up we have this year, its set to be a fun-filled, action packed weekend!” The race for the Driver’s Championship looks like it might go down to the wire as it did in 2014. Having this extra dimension must add to the excitement on race day? “It’s not essential but it really helps when the drivers and teams come to the event battling for the championship, there’s an extra excitement and also the media attention increases which is good for Abu Dhabi. We can’t always guarantee these things but regardless, the drivers are highly competitive people and will also put on a spectacular show, none of them like to lose a race. This year as you say the Championship is very much open although tilting slightly in favour of Nico Rosberg. If he does end up being champion, we’ll hope it’s an Abu Dhabi crowning”. How much time does it take for Yas Marina Circuit to put together an event like this? Can you give us an idea about the preparations? “Preparation for the event is a 12-month process for us, as soon as we finish one Grand Prix we're into a delivery programme for the following year. It's important after every Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that we wrap up with a really good understanding of what worked well and where we can innovate. Customers tastes and expectations change over time and we need to always present a relevant and up to date, thrilling mass audience experience.” What should first time Abu Dhabi GP spectators definitely look to experience at Yas Marina Circuit this year? “It’s all about the weekend. For the motorsport fans, you have the on-track action with GP2 and GP3 as well as the Formula 1® racing itself. But it’s also much more than that. It’s about a weekend of fantastic entertainment off-track as well as on-track. We continue to put an emphasis on our after-race concerts. This year we have The Chemical Brothers playing on the Friday, Lionel Richie on Saturday and Rihanna on Sunday. Then there’s the live entertainment we put on in the Oasis areas. The food and beverage offerings, the Yasalam festival across Abu Dhabi and all of the activity that happens on Yas Island including free access to Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld.” What makes Yas Marina Circuit such a perfect venue for hosting an F1 Grand Prix & with such a highly regarded reputation already in the F1 circuit, what makes it so different from all the other Grand Prix venues of the world? “Our setting is unique with the Marina and the be-jewelled Viceroy hotel. Also our twilight setting with the race starting in daylight and finishing at night is unique to Abu Dhabi. It’s important that we present ourselves successfully on the world stage and that’s what we try to do with this Grand Prix.Yas Marina Circuit is a purposebuilt, world-class facility which showcases world-class action on and off the track. Throughout the weekend we will host on-track action with GP2 and GP3 as well as the Formula 1® racing itself. Off the track you will also find world-class acts performing at the du Arena, great food, entertainment and activities in the Oasis areas topped off by everyone being able to enjoy the stunning Middle Eastern blue skies and sunny weather!” 54

O N E CO A S T

What will race day be like for you? “Race weekend is always busy, as you can imagine, but this is where all of our 12 months of hard work and planning is put into action. All of us at Yas Marina Circuit have a massive feeling of pride and honour when we see the stand fill up with spectators and the cars on the track – it makes it all worthwhile. It is a truly collective effort and it is something we should all be very proud of. Of course, despite the pressure it’s important for all of us to enjoy the moment as well.” What other racing events and experiences can we expect at Yas Marina Circuit this season and how important is it for Yas Marina Circuit to appeal to the wider community? “This year we have the Circuit’s most comprehensive calendar of local motorsport, fitness, corporate entertainment, and driving and passenger experiences since 2009, with more than 377 activities scheduled over the next 12 months and we are constantly trying to improve this.”

“New for 2016, we have partnered with Automobile & Touring Club UAE (ATCUAE) to become the official home of the brand new Formula 4 UAE Championship, due to debut at the on 28th October. In addition to the F4 UAE we also have the return of the TRD 86 Cup,Yas Super Street Challenge, Gulf 12 hours, Rotax MAX Challenge and wide variety of motorsport experiences including our brand new Jaguar F-TYPE passenger and driving experiences.” “This year Yas Marina Circuit will also become the home of eSports in the UAE as we have partnered with the Middle East region’s leading eSports organisation Power League Gaming (PLG) to host a number of high-profile gaming events including Call of Duty World League (CWL), and Electronic Arts (EA) FIFA at the Yas Events Centre. All this enhances what we offer here at Yas Marina Circuit – we truly are the meeting place of champions.” “Finally we will continue to host our weekly StartYAS,TrainYAS and GoYas programmes, sponsored by Daman’s ActiveLife, which sees more than 5,000 people each week walk, run or cycle around the world famous Formula 1® track in a traffic-free, safe and friendly environment.” www.yasmarinacircuit.com

Vana Belle is actively promoting local talent on the island by supporting its Concierge team to take the necessary steps to progress within the Thailand chapter of Les Clef d’Or. Under the watchful eye of Khun Prasert, one of his team already has the local ‘pin’, with a second on the way very soon. The next step is the Golden Keys. Harley-Davidson® Milwaukee-Eight™ The Living Legend, Bigger, Faster, and Prouder than ever before. This issue of One Coast sees us back at the biker bar and for a change we are talking about an engine and not a complete bike. Wouldn’t normally be a feasible interesting article except this V-twin 1745cc and a whopping 1870cc are the all new Milwaukee-Eight 107 and Milwaukee-Eight 114 engines from Harley-Davidson and have only just been released. The history of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle began in Milwaukee in 1903 when Bill Harley and Arthur Walter Davidson developed a one-cylinder motorcycle. Motorized Bicycles, as they were first called have been around for more than a 100 years with hundreds of manufacturers over this time. But there is only one that has stood the test of time and to this day is not only a flourishing motorcycle manufacturer with a following all over the world but is more of a legend than a motorcycle. Harley has over the last 100 years regularly upgraded and brought out new model engines, each better and more powerful than before. But here lays one of Harleys secrets to success. After a small series of bikes Harley-Davidson created the F-Head in 1911, this was a beautiful an awe inspiring V-Twin engine with more power than anything else on the market. A V-twin engine is simply a two-cylinder engine in a V formation. Harley moved through the years working on the aesthetics of this beautiful V-Twin and have stayed hard and fast on their appealing and powerful engine. It evolved around 1929 into the Flathead, 1936 into the Knucklehead, 1948 into the Panhead to Shovelhead to Evolution, and Twin Cam 88 in 1999 and Twin Cam 96 in 2007. Each and every motor a combination of at that time innovative engineering and of course following the same loved V-Twin engine style that was making Harley-Davidson a legend. Nine years after the last Twin Cam 96 was introduced Harley has, on August 23rd 2016, brought out the Milwaukee-Eight. The iconic look, distinctive sound and massive torque make them instantly recognizable, but the Milwaukee-Eight 107 and Milwaukee-Eight 114 engines take the Harley-Davidson V-Twin to a place it’s never been. They’re the most powerful, coolest-running motors they’ve ever built. Smoother, stronger and more durable. With crisper throttle response and truer, cleaner sound. Four valves per cylinder, single chain-driven cam, dual spark plugs, counterbalanced and rubber-mounted.

Faster and more aggressive than a Ferrari the VW Roadster has the looks and power to match The two-seat convertible is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 twinturbocharged TSI engine that produces 503horsepower and a mighty 413pound-feet of torque between 4,000 and 6,000rpm; from just 2,000revs, 369 lb-ft of that torque is available. The power of the TSI engine is transferred to the 20-inch wheels and tires via a combination of a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. The lightweight, 1421kg sports car sprints from 0 to 60mph in an estimated 3.5 seconds and goes onto a top track speed of 192mph.

The Fuelled Animal The roadster body was aerodynamically optimized, with the most prominent visual feature being the large rear wing giving the appearance of a wing hovering behind the roadster. This creates plenty of downforce that aids traction, along with the all-wheeldrive system. Ahead of the wing, the C-pillars which are a defining design element of the Design Vision GTI, extending into the roof, form a roll over bar.The wide, aggressive aero at the front of the car creates a front end not only mean looking, but capable of generating some serious grip. The airstream also piles into the wheel-arches to cool down the brakes.

Topless and powered by a twin-turbo VR6, fantasy or reality? It looks aggressive thanks to the body kit and lightweight thanks to the extensive use of carbon fibre and super high tech lightweight materials the power-to-weight ratio is 2.5kilograms per horsepower and according to the people at Volkswagen the body surfaces have been optimized for an extremely low centre of gravity.

VW GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo is virtually the coolest Golf ever The great thing about the GTI Roadster is that it is available to everyone and at a price that we can all afford, sadly it exists only in the world of the Sony PS3, and the hugely addictive Gran Turismo 6 racing simulator. If you want to add the car to your virtual collection, the VW roadster can be purchased from the Vision GT section in the GT6 garage.

www.gran-turismo.com/us/vgt/volkswagen_rs

"When Sony asked us if we would develop a Vision GTI vehicle exclusively for the game to mark the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo we didn't hesitate for a moment," explained Klaus Bischoff, head of design at Volkswagen. Without the constraints of an actual production car,VW designers could let loose and create a Golf GTI that's unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Mark Sterner - HM Yas Viceroy

n a country famed for its architectural wonders, it can be hard to stand out in the UAE. But with effortless style, the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi takes the chequered flag as a modern icon for the capital and features a unique concept, blending state-of-the-art design with luxury and elegance. As the only hotel to straddle a racetrack, the Yas Marina Formula 1 Circuit, it also takes another first; having been built half on land and half over water, pushing the boundaries on the possibilities of innovation. Located on Yas Island, the burgeoning entertainment capital of Abu Dhabi, the grand structure stands out even more at sunset, as its magnificent gridded canopy comes to life with the hypnotic glow of blue and red LED lights. As a geographical landmark, it beckons visitors from surrounding motorways and is a striking first impression for guests flying into Abu Dhabi International airport from above. Once inside, its 499 impeccable rooms and suite interiors, 11 innovative dining and lounge venues, and the luxurious ESPA at Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi embody a contemporary fusion of grace and momentum, created with sensuous curves and racing lines.

We sat down with Mark Sterner, HM at Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi to discuss the iconic hotels preparations for the upcoming FORMULA 1™ ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX on the 25th – 27th November.

Already one of the most recognisable hotels in the world, how challenging is it being under the spotlight for one the biggest international sporting events? We are very fortunate to work with an iconic property and with that comes great expectations. The FORMULA 1™ ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX albeit being one of the most exciting events on the international race calendar is a challenging one to host. We know the race weekend inside out – and have hosted it for seven years since 2009. With the eighth race, as with all of them, it involves every single effort from every team member and we cannot perform without this tremendous focus. How important is hosting the final race of the season for Yas Viceroy? In our opinion it is the most important race of the season - we love it! In the past few years we have been so lucky to host the deciding race a few times in terms of who win the championship and really what more could a hotel ask for? International exposure, F1™ teams, F1™ supporters and a star struck weekend with international socialites and celebrities! What sort of viewing figures are you expecting? How many guests do you see over the race weekend? Generally we have in excess of 8,000 people per day we usually experience in and around the hotel.Yas Viceroy is the place to be, and be seen! How are bookings looking this year? The hotel is under high demand and always fills over the race weekend. At this stage – if you are quick, you can still book a room or a table at one of our many race track facing restaurants. O N E CO A S T

75

When do hotel preparations start for the GP? What’s the organisational time like for your team and how does it work across Yas Marina? Yearlong preparations from setting strategies, selling rooms, hospitality suites and public spaces including our dining and nightlife events. The build up is extremely busy. Every single detail within every department is a priority, it is all about preparation! During the race weekend, it is all hands on deck. The entire hotel team is busy, but we ‘remember to live’ and enjoy the vibe of the event, and have fun with it. Being framed by views of the race track,Yas Marina turns to a hangout for the sophisticated set during the FORMULA 1™ ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX where everyone enjoys the cool vibes - including after race parties, drop in celebrities and entertainment. What dining options are available for guests and visitors? Which venues have viewing angles of the track? Our trackside dining includes Origins, Kazu and Atayeb. Origins offer you a selection of global cuisine in an international buffet style right on the trackside. You will enjoy the true taste of Japan at Kazu restaurant, indulging yourself in sushi masterpieces, delicious teppanyaki, robanyaki and tempura. Our award winning chefs at Atayeb restaurant will pamper you with delicious mezzes and your favourite Arabic cuisines. Also, you can add a dash of spice to your race weekend at our award-winning Angar, offering traditional Indian flavours with a modern twist. Two Michelin star and legendary Chef Antonio Mellino is returning to Yas Viceroy to showcase his authentic taste of Italy in ‘Quattro Passi’ which takes over the kitchen at Amici from the 24th to 27th November this year. 76

O N E CO A S T

With the Yas Viceroy being uniquely set across the F1 track, what different viewing angles are available? You cannot get any closer to the circuit than our terraces and rooms! We are the only hotel in the world atop a F1™ track boasting amazing views from the high speed stretches to tight corners where you can almost see the drivers expressions! What will race day be like for you? For me it is always an early start and late finish throughout the weekend. On the actual race day it would be an early back of house walk through to see my colleagues and feel the buzz of the operation, after that a morning briefing with all department heads discussing last 24 hours operations and the coming 24 hours of operation. From that point onwards I am front of house, hosting, welcoming and checking on our guests until the very late hours of night. With a venue as unique as Yas Viceroy, what do you find most memorable about the F1’s presence? The event is truly amazing – the sound, the thrill, the vibe, the crowd... it is all here and you cannot find the atmosphere that is generated anywhere else in the world regardless. We are truly a one-of-a-kind property, epic in every way. With F1 drivers and their teams staying at the hotel, how does Yas Viceroy cater for its special guests? All guests are treated individually and get a personalized catering; we do not differentiate between any guests, we offer everyone the Viceroy Experience. www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/en/abudhabi

The Turquoise Allure words by Krystyna Kruz

Turquoise is often considered to be an exotic colour and one many of us are drawn to. Interestingly when planning interior design and home dĂŠcor the palette of turquoise mixes well with so many colours. Be it cool white from one end of the spectrum, to the warmth of chocolate brown at the other, turquoise really can be one of the easiest colours to play with. It is perhaps the unique balance of turquoise that makes it standout in the colour spectrum, which is possibly why it works so well with many interior canvasses, from perhaps a vintage or cottage-styled look, to the other end of the scale in a sleek contemporary home.

Villa Turquoise

Villa Turquoise

As a colour it has certainly played a role in cultures that have strongly associated its appeal with one that brings peace, exudes harmony and creates a feel of lasting happiness. Native American Indians would adorn themselves in the mottled gems of turquoise believing that the stone had fallen from the sky and the colour had the power to ward off evil and offer balance and wellness. The Greeks used deep teal and cobalt blue with white, on doors, beds, and interiors, believing that the colour had the ability to ward off evil spirits and create a sense of calm. Interestingly today modern society now sees turquoise as a colour that brings vibrancy to an interior, whilst providing a feeling of pleasure and serenity. Villa Mia 84

O N E CO A S T

Villa Pavana

The obvious allure of turquoise lays in that romantic image of white sandy beaches and blue turquoise waters evoking a feel of that unforgettable holiday. Often dubbed as a summer shade, turquoise is perfect for every season when used right. From aquamarine to teal, there are plenty of shades that broadly fall under its wing. While you can argue endlessly about the technicalities of which green-blue combination is called what, there is no dispute about the captivating aura of turquoise.

Villa Pavana

Key though is, to first take a look at the background that is in place. Designing a room and executing a colour scheme is like painting on an empty canvas. The more pristine and neutral the background, the more stark will be the effect of the colour used. Light aqua can offer equally compelling contrast as dark turquoise when used right, as long as the other colours in the room come to its aid.

Decorating your home by painting a wall or adding turquoise accents is often an attempt to recreate this idyllic image and the feeling of happiness it once evoked. Yet, it can take a bit of skill and planning combined with confidence to pull this vibrant look off.Turquoise, aquamarine, teal and the many other variants work well with pretty much any style and scheme.

If having an interior that looks cohesive and well put together is the direction for that space, then the colour used on the walls, in this case, a shade of turquoise, can also be included elsewhere in the room, in the form of accessories such as an ottoman, or rug. The beauty of this interior can be enhanced to a deeper level by these accent colours not being identical.

Using a bright and bold colour with elegance is all about creating that right equilibrium. Repeating turquoise in several places can achieve a sense of balance and is often a stunning way to introduce the colour to your home. This is especially true when using it as an accent colour. Accent fabrics, pillows, vases and artwork can all help add the vibrancy of turquoise without too much of an effort.

The warm, vibrant yet serene shades of turquoise can offer interiors the freshness of nature and the relaxation of an exotic getaway far from home. In essence, turquoise is a strong colour that brings to the table an interesting balance that can be the glue that binds that interior together. Be it soft accents or bold large statements, turquoise used in any space offers a role in a truly winning interior combination.

The tone of turquoise that is used does not always need to be bright. This is a popular misconception that in order for a colour to create the necessary impact it has be from the brighter end of the scale in order for it to pop in a space creating lasting visual impact. Softer tones of turquoise and teal with aqua marine can offer just as much magic to any space creating a stunning interior.

Serpenti

watches steal the limelight again…

It seems like the ever growing obsession with Bvlgari serpenti watches will never cease in the near future as the celebrated fashion house keeps reinventing it with new aesthetics. Whatever the reason, it’s more than welcome on behalf of highprofile women who always look for newness in anything. SerpentiIncantati gives a new lease of life to this animal symbol. After coiling around of the wrist, the snake is now reinvented by wrapping itself for the very first time around the case of a round watch: the reptile literally twines itself around the watch dial, admirably framing an entirely skeletonworked manufacture tourbillon caliber. This airily graceful movement is a work of art: the mainplate and bridges are crafted in pink or white gold, the flanks are straight-grained, the rims and sinks are all chamfered and systematically polished. The steel parts are complemented by the kind of surface finishes cherished by Haute Horlogerie: circular graining and snailing set the finishing touches to this precious craftsmanship contributing to a spectacular result. Available in two versions, the new Serpenti Incantati Skeleton Tourbillon entirely renews the theme through a modern design. The splendid Serpenti Incantati – or enchanting snake – is magnificently tamed in a whole new way, through a bewitching interpretation celebrating the union of Haute Horlogerie and High Quality Watchmaking Each part of the snake’s head and body has been entirely rethought and redesigned through extremely contemporary, soft and stylized lines. Although Bvlgari domesticates its serpent, the latter continues to appear as if in perpetual motion. Boundless expressive territory: The new expressive territory opened up by Serpenti Incantati is literally boundless. Just it does in a version equipped with a horological complication; the entrancing serpent appears with equal ease in the form of a dainty jewelry watch, smoothly gracing four variations in which it steadfastly embraces the precious case. SerpentiIncantati comes in a rubellite-set version with a pink gold case and satin strap or a matching jewelry bracelet; or in a diamond-set white gold variation with a satin strap or matching jewelry bracelet – all in a 30mm size. This precious and refined watch testifies to the high degree of technical mastery cultivated by the master artisans in Bvlgari’s High Jewelry ateliers. The finesse and the quality of the gemsetting, as well as the ways in which the stones are assembled and adjusted, are truly remarkable. One also notes the amazingly flexible feel of the gemset bracelets that are extremely pleasant to wear, since Bvlgari focuses on achieving a distinctive sensuality for its jewelry that makes each piece supremely comfortable as well as radiant. The snake’s tail flows over the wrist and coils around it with supple grace, testifying to the flexibility and sense of movement characterizing Bvlgari jewelry creations. Serpenti Spiga: Boldly rock ‘n’ roll; The snake in perpetual motion lends itself to all manner of bold moves. Before being a watchmaking success, the Serpenti watch by Bvlgari is first and foremost a style statement. It’s an attitude. This watch is a true classic. The animal symbol revisited by Bvlgari is smoothly and surely reinvented in a black or white high-tech ceramic version. Serpenti Spiga: the fresh and youthful charm of this snake, featuring a touch of precious metal evoking the jeweler’s DNA, is bound to turn heads wherever it appears. The diamond-set pink gold bezel, along with the bracelet lug and the serpent’s tail, also in pink gold, create a subtle contrast with the highly contemporary overall ceramic look. Serpenti Spiga embodies a technical challenge, since making a flexible and articulated Tubogas type bracelet in ceramic represents a new form of prowess from the Rome-based Maison, known for its excellence in working with materials and presenting ever renewed innovations. But Spiga is also a bold move in style terms, once again overturning the style codes of precious watchmaking to infuse them with a modern, fresh and sensual touch. This new watch immediately exudes a sense of voluptuous glamour. It makes no secret of its seductive appeal, starting with the soft feel of ceramic on the skin. Voluptuous charm is a theme dear to the heart of Bvlgari designers and a natural part of the Italian temperament. The snake is the lucky-charm animal among Bvlgari creations. It now appears in an incredible seductive, modern and powerful guise. It pops up where one least expects it, while remaining entirely in harmony with the spirit of Rome. Aesthetically daring while renouncing none of its inherent elegance, Serpenti Spiga flaunt its rock ‘n’ roll extravagance and diverts aesthetic codes, the better to modernize and transcend them.

A woman often will play with her jewels, for their supple feel and even the sound they can make. Every time a woman tries on the magnificent creation that was chosen just for her, she falls in love with it again. Shining with this conversation piece on, she radiates with the coloured richness of pure Italian glamour. As veritable masterpieces of art, Bvlgari jewels and high-end watches live forever, often passed between generations. Formed of the rarest gemstones on earth and by the finest artisans in jewel history, an entire Bvlgari piece is often initially inspired by the singular nature of a rare stone. Bold and beautiful, such Bvlgari designs reflect the audacity of the Roman spirit. Glamorous, sensual, and vivacious, Bvlgari’s High Jewelry is exquisitely unconventional, asserting the strong character of the Italian Maison. For 2016, Bvlgari High Jewelry savours its very Italian personality – the blues of the Mediterranean, the pinks of Roman sunset, the golds of an ancient age – as it captures the colours, light, and expressivity of its homeland into three facets of inspiration: daring ITALIAN EXTRAVAGANZA, romantic MEDITERRANEAN EDEN, and mythical ROMAN HERITAGE.

UAE’s first luxury ‘Native’ bags and shoes By Nagmani Dubai is indisputably a paradise of luxe sophistication that’s just waiting to blow away the visitors and leave an indelible mark on them. With its enviable modern infrastructure and perfect planning, the city has succeeded in positioning itself as one of the world’s most happening places to see today. And if we talk about where fashion fits in all of this, then its influence has certainly been greater and is quite worthy of praise, but with an indigenous twist of its own. This is where India-born Rachna Malkani, founder and creative director of Native Dubai (a high-end local accessories brand making luxury handbags and shoes) is turning heads with her beautiful designs and emerges as a pioneer who along with her husband gave the UAE its first genuine leather manufacturing facility “Leather Crafts” in 2007. In an exclusive interview with One Coast, we sat down with her to discuss what triggered her overall interest in designing luxury fashion products particularly handbags and shoes, what she takes in from this and much more. Before Malkani became part of this glamour industry, she enjoyed a successful career as a financial consultant in the corporate world. This switchover took place as her husband’s rapidly expanding trading business created space for a whole new venture “Corporate Gifts & Promotional Items Division” which needed someone like her. She happily took up this challenge thanks to her business acumen. Running this division so successfully for a decade now, she was looking forward to take a shot at another exciting project with her man.And it was something long overdue that no one ever had considered before i.e. formation of UAE’s first leather manufacturing plant. 96

It proved to be a big blessing for local entrepreneurs because they now had this astounding facility close to home where they could produce their branded versions of top quality leather goods. “Since we were over the moon for having created a world class manufacturing genuine leather luxury goods facility for the first time here in the UAE, we wanted to celebrate its success with a home-grown luxury leather brand,” she says. “That’s how the idea of Native Dubai was born. Our goal with it is to assert Dubai’s stake as a leader when it comes to designing its own luxury fashion stuff in the international market.” Realizing that it’s their brand and vision, Malkani had to take the lead role. So it came instinctively to her that the expression of designs is something that should come from her entirely in order to express who Native truly is and what it feels. “I believe this is one way to express our purpose of life by continuing to dig in the core of Native,” she says. She has never taken any fashion or designing courses formally. Her knowledge and know how all came from experience and hands-on learning approach. Behind any marvelous creation lies a great deal of creative work which is going to make it a winner. Native designs are no different. When asked what she finds most demanding part of her job, she explains, “You know it’s the whole process from the point of conceptualizing the idea, trying to put it into technical aspect, getting resources together to bring it to life the way I imagine and see it, all of it is challenging because we are dealing with leather and not necessarily what we conceive can be put into practice keeping in mind the nature, look, fall of the leather itself.”

These are precious handbags made of luxe leather skin like camel, cow, French bull plus exotics like python, ostrich and crocodile (Porosus). Native bags are rich in color. It’s something very important for Malkani. “When I do my colors, I mostly visualize nature and human mind. I believe these two are the most amazing creations of the universe and they never stop amazing us with their depth and variations. While mixing colors, I always have the thought of them complementing each other and neither of them getting overshadowed by the other, Malkani says.

98

O N E CO A S T

We are working towards bringing in more kinds of creative leather work in future too, she says.

Malkani makes sure each of them has a personality and holds its ground, just like how our society should be and how we as people should empower each other and not try to put down any mindset. And that’s how she works with colors as well. These incredible bags fit a woman who isn’t afraid to be what she wants to be in life. She isn’t constrained by the conditioning of the society and always speaks her mind. “She is strong and independent while keeping the strengths of her feminine side of love and compassion within her. She sets her own path and walks it relentlessly. She doesn't follow. More or less, she sets the trends unequivocally,” Malkani points out. In everybody’s life there are role models or muses they often look up to for impetus. And Malkani too has someone like Queen Rania for a great human being that she is, the late Princess Diana who was elegance and compassion personified, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence. “Even from our very own Bollywood, I have two actresses as a perfect exampleDeepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut—the women I admire the way they have fought their own battles and conquered the work field as well, and they aren’t shy to speak about it, to me that’s true strength and beauty,” she says. Native is one of the rare brands worldwide that boasts of having this amazing multiple skin combinations. “We have loyal media influencers and celebrities who are in love with our bags like Lebanese singer Madeleine Matar to Moroccan singer Jamila El Badaoui, Moroccan actress Mayssa Maghrebi, Dubai TV presenter and social influencer Rahaf Al Tawil, MBC TV presenter and social influencer Lojain Omran, famous Belgian socialite Kristina Bazan, renowned Kuwaiti bloggers Dalal Al Doub and Ascia AKF,” she says. “They all love Native bags because they are genuine and colorful.” Celebrity endorsement is another important part of Native strategy with regard to making itself more popular. “It definitely matters because they are the women who have achieved and have become the leaders, influencers and the trend setters in their fields, so it’s important to develop that relationship with the buyers through them,” Malkani says.

Rachna Malkani, founder and creative director of Native Dubai

With its growing popularity, Native wants to make a difference socially as it considers using real life heroes (who have so much to say) in its future campaigns. “ This is something we are currently working on in order to show our respect for their journeys and accomplishments too,” she says. “ While working on the business aspect we also love to stay connected to our Native beliefs.” Telling stories with every collection is Malkani’s way of spreading happiness in society. “So far we have and would love to continue to do so. I feel it’s one of the best ways of expressing and sharing oneself and our experiences and learning of life and if it can be expressed through designs, then why not,” she says. Her latest collection titled “Beauty beyond the Obvious” is one such collection inspired by her own journey with autism. “It’s my way of expressing the emotions it evoked in me as a mother of child dealing with this problem. It’s a collection that speaks about Unlabeling, pure from the heart, the joy of being who you truly are within, being comfortable in your own skin regardless of what the conditioning of the world wants to make you believe,” she says. “This collection looks at these kids with sheer amazement especially their inner strength and beauty the only tool that helps them fight their own battles with themselves and the outer world.” The collection comes with three models with each one of them carrying a story in the form of embroidered design and crystal work done on it to truly enhance their beauty. It’s only a tip of the iceberg as more Native wonders are to be unveiled in the coming months. “We will soon be launching Native Elements which is primarily a collection of basic day-to-day carry bags and small leather goods. Having said that, the recent soft opening of the House of Native has already given us a platform to showcase a much bigger range and quality of Native bags and shoes,” she says. “It’s also an opportunity to encourage lots of upcoming fashion designers to be able to showcase their talent by having their collections displayed in the House of Native as we do have a dedicated floor catering to fashion in the boutique.” So it’s time you stirred your senses with the brilliant craftsmanship of Native Dubai! I bet you will definitely get hooked to it.

Innovative shoe designs have sprung up time after time but it has never been so exciting thanks to the newfound squad of daring shoe designers willing to eliminate the conventional archetype. After all, footwear is a second-to-none obsession when it comes to giving out an all-out style punch to one’s personality. Designing provocative and otherworldly type of shoes is Kushino’s way of making things happen and let his strong curiosity toward anything in shape come alive. Moreover, it’s his incredible passion for embracing challenges which is what ultimately drives him to do what he does best. “I made up my mind for it because I got bored with the trends lacking originality when it came to footwear design,” he says. He often banks upon his intuition while creating breathtakingly beautiful shoes in compliance with the latest scientific technology, which he considers only when the technological aspect is more important. 102

"Be it artistic or technological, my motto is to showcase the essence of the craftsmen’s work in it”, he says.

Since each shoe design is a one-of-a-kind creation, it’s important for him to devote enough time to research on materials that just happen to enhance its charm. As for color combination, Kushino is no stranger to it and makes sure it’s perfectly laid out. “The better the color combination, the better its finishing quality would be,” he says. Cambodia

A country rediscovered words by Stuart Langrish

livingin explore

Set in a tranquil corner of Indochina, bordering Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, Cambodia is a small country with a big history. Though now a modest player on the world stage, here was once the setting for one of Asia’s most magnificent early civilizations, the mighty Khmer empire of Angkor. Ruling between the ninth and 15th century, these magnificent temples continue to provide a touchstone of national identity – and are unsurpassed in their beauty and numbers. After hell and back, tourism numbers are up 10% each year, the economy slowly recovering. The Khmer temples of the past are offering signs of a heavenly future. Announced by the European Council on Tourism and Trade (EECT) as the “World’s Best Tourism Destination” and the “Favourite Cultural Destination” distinction for 2016, now is the time. A visit to Cambodia offers a refreshing throwback to an older and simpler era (from the outside at least) mixed with city remnants of its French colonial past. A gecko compared to the Asian dragons of the region, the country remains a largely rural society, and appears to have changed little in generations. Away from the temples, much is refreshingly untouched by tourism and, in many places, largely unexplored with swathes of picture postcard scenery; imposing border mountains, the largest lake in Southeast Asia, the Tonlé Sap, providing its heartbeat, and the mighty Mekong River bringing life and vitality to the land. Despite having the eighth wonder of the world in its backyard, Cambodia’s real treasure is its people. A Khmer welcome is genuine in its warmth and hospitality – something which is all the more astonishing given the country’s tragic recent past. For many, Cambodia remains synonymous with the bloody excesses of the murderous Maoist-driven Khmer Rouge regime from 1976-1979, whose delusional leader Pol Pot succeeded in killing or causing the deaths of nearly two million fellow citizens – around twenty percent of the population. Unsurprisingly, emotional scars from this period run deep and through every layer of Cambodian society – the people who'll often guide you to them have themselves been damaged by the genocide; some remember it through the eyes of children and orphans, others as indentured slaves. One Coast Magazine set about exploring a country slowly rediscovering itself, and the creative foundations it’s building for the future.

Phnom Penh With a population reaching two million, the Cambodian capital is a bustling, cosmopolitan crossroads of Asia’s past and present, built on the banks of the mighty Mekong, Bassac and Tonlé Sap rivers. Unfurling its petals from something of a Wild East frontier town to an emerging destination, in the last few years it’s undergone an exciting style renaissance. Once known as the "Pearl of Asia”, its former lustre has returned and helped drown out its reputation as just a sobering war history stop on the Angkor trail. This is a city now buzzing with hip boutiques, cosmopolitan eateries, vibrant markets and a flourishing arts scene, all framed by the indelible mark of its colonial cobwebs. History lingers, a reminder to its time under French rule in the 19th and 20th centuries – of wide avenues, leafy spaces, a map awash with ‘Boulevards’ and ‘Rues’. Teeming with life, it’s hard to imagine that the capital was virtually depopulated during the Khmer Rouge’s regime. Chronicling the darkest side in Cambodia’s past is S-21, the former school turned secret prison and now known as Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Here, along with Choeung Ek, 10 miles south of the city and one of the many ‘Killing Fields’ where the Khmer Rouge butchered their own people, offer a sobering reminder of man’s inhumanity. Though not your standard bucket list, a visit to both is as significant as it is to Auschwitz or any Nazi landmark in Europe.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal As Phnom Penh evolves, and new skyscrapers begin jostling the skyline, a dignified stalwart remains a classic example to Indochina's colonial heyday below. Raffles Hotel Le Royal is one of Cambodia’s most characterful properties, (challenged only by sister property Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor in Siem Reap), and a national icon since 1929. A stately world of unassuming grace and discreet luxury, it has hosted luminaries such as Barack Obama, Charlie Chaplin, Angelina Jolie, and Somerset Maugham. The last bastion for foreign journalists covering the Cambodian civil war during the 1970s, it survived the Khmer Rouge by being draped in Red Cross flags and declared a neutral zone. A sympathetic restoration in 1997 saw the hotel return to prominence, with rebranding as a Raffles cementing its status as a South-East Asian treasure. The original wing of this landmark hotel, together with a more recent addition, house a total of 175 guest rooms, apartments and suites, all distinguished by their blend of Khmer, Art Deco and French colonial architecture, exuding grandeur at every step. Khmer specialities and fine wines are on offer at Restaurant Le Royal while the Elephant Bar is a city institution, offering an unmatched old-world ambiance and over 40 carefully crafted cocktails. The signature ‘Femme Fatale’ (Champagne, Crème de Fraise, Cognac), is named after one of their most famous guests, former American First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in 1967. www.raffles.com/phnom-penh

Angkor Wat, Siem Reap Join Lara Croft and set your compass north for Siem Reap, the nearest town to the Angkor temple ruins, which sprawl across the UNESCO-protected Angkor archaeological park. Hewed out of the jungle 1,000 years ago, it is a pinnacle to the Khmer empire of Angkor’s genius. Rediscovered in 1860 by the French archaeologist Henri Mouhot, most of the temples have now been freed from the encroaching jungle, but one has been left as they found it: Ta Prohm, as seen in the film Tomb Raider. When this vast, ornate temple was abandoned, the jungle took it back; giving visitors the chance of discovering untouched ruins for the first time. The heart of the Khmer kingdom was Angkor Thom, a two-mile-square compound which has survived in rather better shape. In the 12th-century it was probably the world's most populous city, with around a million inhabitants. At the centre of Angkor Thom is the Bayon: a sandstone pyramid built in single-minded celebration of the face of the god Avalokiteśvara. The builders' devotion is demonstrated in the countless smiling visages grinning from every surface of the tower. The most famous temple of Angkor and Cambodia's national symbol, Angkor Wat is the epitome of Khmer Architecture. Its distinctive five towers represent Mount Meru's five peaks, the enclosed wall represents the mountains at the edge of the world, and the surrounding moat symbolizes the ocean. Recently, archaeologists have found multiple, previously undocumented medieval cities not far from the ancient temple centre in ground-breaking discoveries that promise to upend key assumptions about south-east Asia’s history.

Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor Where the romance of Angkor Wat has begun since the first wave of travellers nearly 85 years ago. A visit to the ancient temple ruins has long been synonymous with a stay at Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor. As the oldest building in Siem Reap, the hotel originally welcomed its first guests in 1932, before reopening after an extensive refurbishment programme in 1997 and has now become a destination unto itself for visitors. Nowadays, the 119-room-and-suite hotel exudes a distinguished air of gentility with period antiques and an old-fashioned cage lift offering a fully functional reminder of more grandiose, colonial days. The hotel is distinguished by a combination of 1920's Art Deco, French Colonial architecture with Khmer objets d'art. A careful blend of traditional Cambodian grandeur infused with the best of modern comforts. Set across from the Royal Palace in the Old French Quarter, the hotel is cocooned within 15 acres of beautifully landscaped French gardens. Inspired by the ancient royal bathing pools of Angkor, the massive emerald green pool is the largest in the country, and offers a peaceful oasis away from the hustle outside. No stay at Raffles is complete without experiencing the Elephant Bar's famous cocktail,Airavata (rum, coconut passion, lime juice, crème de banana and pineapple & coconut juice). For a welcome alternative, try The Gin Sling, made with Raffles own exclusive gin, Raffles 1915, by Sipsmith, the pioneers of London’s craft gin distilling revival. www.raffles.com/siem-reap

Spark Circus is returning to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in January 2017 for a spectacular tour of the resorts and schools with their immersive dance, fire and aerial acrobatics show! These incredible shows are designed to astonish and dazzle audiences while shining a light on the difficulties faced by refugees in Burma and Thailand. All of the money raised from the shows in January will go towards funding the one-month long Spark Circus tour of the Burmese refugee camps, orphanages and migrant schools in the north of Thailand, where they will be providing shows, interactive play and circus programs to the children in the surrounding areas of Mae Sot. Spark Circus has now been touring the refugee camps for 11 years. What started out as a gathering of compassionate fire performers, has developed into a contemporary circus company; focusing more on comedy, hip hop, juggling, aerial and acrobatics. But don’t worry, they have certainly not lost their Spark; the fire will be in full force for their Koh Samui & Koh Phagnan tour! This year’s tour starts off with a sparkly BANG at W resort, after which there will be an intimate (but definitely still as jaw-dropping!) show at Dr. Frogs restaurant. The team will then be heading to Koh Phagnan for a spectacular collaboration with Haad Rin Resort and Jungle Gym Eco Lodge. Last but by no means least, they will finish in their usual spot, at The Sanctuary, Haad Tien, where it all began back in 2005. ***More locations coming soon, keep up to date via their website sparkcircus.org*** This year, Spark Circus has a new director at its helm; the impressively multi-skilled Charlene Whitehead, we caught up with her to discuss her involvement and the future of Spark Circus; “It's my third tour now and I just can't get enough. To pull up to those schools and camps and be greeted by hundreds of smiles and screams of excitement, is just beyond magical.

As we have been working in the Mae Sot region for 11 years, we would like to take it to the next level. The children are starting to pick up the circus skills that we have been teaching them so we are now providing them with longer, more intensive training. And this year we have a surprise for them! We are so excited to see the look on the children's faces when they see the two incredible Burmese performers on the team this year! Not only will they act as performers and teachers, but they will also help us translate and communicate with the children. This is a dream come true for us. It is so inspiring for the children to see people from their own country performing the skills that they are learning, and making a living from it! A big thank you to Samui Circus school for introducing us to them and letting us take them for a month. We hope in the future to create a community space in Mae Sot for physical activity and circus skills training for the long term. Hopefully in a few years they will be touring Koh Samui with their own show.” Social Circus is a phenomenon exploding all over the world as a tool to guide and support young people who are struggling in one way or another. “As I have learned from my own experiences, circus is a wonderful way of overcoming trauma. Circus teaches us to be bold, to take risks and to express ourselves in any colourful way we choose. Many of these children are very shy and quiet and not encouraged to express themselves. Circus activities provide them with the tools to get into their bodies, play and to communicate with the world in a different way.”

Burma has been in a state of civil war for over 60 years. Hundreds of thousands Burmese, Karen and other tribal ethnicities are living in Thailand in camps along the border. Although the situation on the outside seems to be getting better, there is still fighting in the border regions in the north. Families are still escaping to the Thailand and children are still going hungry and unschooled. Spark Circus not only provides circus shows, play and toys for the children, they also provide funds for things such as clean water, playgrounds, toilets, blankets, whatever need is expressed Spark makes all attempts to meet it. “It's our way of saying we see you and we are here for you.As regular visitors of Thailand this is our way of giving back to the community that we so readily take from. My journey in Thailand has just as much been a journey into Burma. We are very happy to be a part of bringing awareness to tourists and visitors in Thailand of the situation of the Burmese in this country.” Charlene Whitehead, Spark’s co-director with Andrea Russell. Spark Circus is so grateful for the ongoing support from the Samui community! The generous and thoughtful businesses, resorts, schools, and individuals here have been such a huge part of making the work we do with the kids possible.Thank you for your valuable contributions to the project! Slow Cooking that Soup to Perfection

In this hustle and bustle busy world that we live in we are always after quicker and faster methods of life. This includes everything and even our cuisine and food traits although some of these hastier methods are now showing to be anything but healthy. Here immediately the microwave come to mind and anyone still using it should research the health complications that can arise. But how about we step back a minute, open up that old cupboard or box in the garage and drag out that ancient cast iron or clay pot form. They came in many designs and were usually sturdy pieces of kitchen equipment that would still be a valuable asset today. Both these produce absolutely wonderful dishes, full of natural aroma and taste without adding the modern day taste additives. For centuries, chefs and home cooks have taken advantage of the natural heat retention and redistribution properties of cast iron and clay, which is so versatile it can be used on most heat sources. All we need with these is time and to plan the evening meal. Delectable dishes are produced with these pots with slow cooking and I would always make it a breakfast time task to prepare the evening meal.

lifestyletable tales Here is my family’s old tried and proven soup recipe. Visit the local market or even supermarket and look out for the freshest and heathiest greens, often I’d go for organic if available. Pick out some potatoes and again look for something healthy, sweet potatoes often offer a much higher nutritional benefit as plain white and go just fantastic in a soup. Now all you need is some meat, it’s not imperative if you’re a vegetarian but I’m a meat eater and love some with soup. Again pick up a small piece of organic pork, chicken or beef if possible. Choose a cut that has some fat and not just a lean piece of meat. The fat here will only add flavour to your soup.Wash everything and cut it into bite size pieces, add some cold water to your pot and throw in your chosen ingredients. Some meats especially beef will benefit from a quick browning in a pan before adding to the soup, this will also enhance the meat flavour. There are no strict rules here and the only rule is choosing fresh healthy ingredients and let them slow cook the whole day. Spices are similar, we normally only use some good quality sea salt and mix of colourful ground pepper and some delicious herbs and spices that were also available at the market. Some simple guidelines

• • • •

More delicate vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, peas, and summer squash should be added towards the end of the cooking time. To avoid rice and pasta from becoming sticky, cook them on the stovetop and add in at the end of the cooking time just long enough to be heated through. At the end of cooking, if there seems to be too much liquid, remove the lid and turn the pot up the heat, allowing some of the water to cook out. If you’d like to thicken or enrich the sauce, stir in cream, sour cream, shredded cheese, or a mixture of corn starch and cold water.

Brighten up flavours with lemon juice, or vinegar, and maybe a handful of fresh chopped parsley, basil, or garden herbs. There are no hard guidelines here for time and temperature just allow 6-8 hours at a low heat in the oven. Have a peak around half time and if water is low add a touch, and if its cooking a bit well turn the heat down even further. Patience and watching what is going on a couple of times through the cooking will make it very clear what temp and time are really needed. What you will produce is an absolutely delicious and tasty soup that the whole family will love, full of natural flavour and nutrition.

In 2010 the worst oil disaster in U.S. history struck. It was the BP oil spill off the gulf of Mexico. The offshore oil rig was known as Deepwater Horizon. The disaster took the lives of 11 men. This is the story of that disaster.

DEEPWATER HORIZON

This powerful film should come with a warning because of how realistic it is. Having watched it with someone who worked on the oil rigs – they commented of how realistic the movie was and you can tell that the attention to detail has been focused on in a big way.

Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson, John Malkovich

After the build up which does take over an hour until disaster strikes – the intensity and the effects are powerful stuff and you can feel how claustrophobic it must have been. With all the pyrotechnics going off it really does feel like you are on The Deepwater Horizon yourself.

just out SULLY Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart Sully is directed by Clint Eastwood and is about the hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger who safely landed his plane on the icy waters of the Hudson River in 2009, and saved the lives of all 150 passengers and five crew members aboard. The movie is an eye-opener as not only does it focus on the actual incident but also the fall-out and the subsequent investigation of the incident.

124

O N E CO A S T

About three minutes after the US Airways Flight took off from New York's LaGuardia Airport multiple bird strikes by geese caused both jet engines to fail. Sully turned to his co-pilot Jeffrey (the excellent Aaron Eckhart) to consider options. Could they return to LaGuardia or the nearby Teterboro airport in New Jersey without crashing? With 208 seconds to decide, Sully decided to put it in The Hudson River. The Captain picked a spot where choppers, police, fireman and ferryboat rescue units could move in quickly. The movie pins you to your seat with high-tension scenes of flight and rescue. Could this act sustain an entire film though?.....doubtful. That's why the film focusus so hard on the aftermath of the so-called "Miracle on the Hudson."

What was a welcome change with the movie was how much it attacks BP for their part in the disaster and there neglection of basic safety practices. Normally movies tend to sit on the fence on such issues but BP get attacked constantly throughout. The movie has stellar cast who convincingly take you into the horror of the devastation. Mark Wahlberg plays Mike Williams the electronics technician, Kate Hudson plays Felicia Williams his wife feeling the fright of uncertainty, Kurt Russell plays Jimmy "Mr Jimmy" Harrel the oil rig manager and of course there is the evil John Malkovich who plays Donald Vidrine the BP representative. They all do justice to the movie and its sensitive source material. Deepwater Horizon is intense, powerful stuff and the running time just flies by.

In public, Sully is hounded by the media, politicians and fans. Privately, he is haunted by the tragedies that could have occurred if he had failed to find a safe place to land. The pilot is assured he made the right decision. But his actions are questioned by the safety board, who grill Sully and his copilot relentlessly. Tom Hanks really plays the part of Sully well and is at the top of his game here, with a very reserved, understated performance. Having won two Oscars already I am thinking this could be the third. It is acting of the highest order. Overall a brilliant film with an excellent performance from Tom Hanks.

This is one of the best show’s on TV in my opinion. I've watched many a show as well. Next to this Peaky Blinders, is the only current series which compares to the addicitiveness of this series.

KINGDOM SEASON 1 and 2

Kingdom's story line focuses on a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) gym run by retired MMA fighter Alvey Kulina played by Frank Grillo. Alvey has two sons involved in his gym, one young, favoured son with much ring potential named Nate, played by Nick Jonas and the other bad son named Jay played by Jonathan Tucker.

Frank Grillo, Nick Jonas, Johnathan Tucker

Regardless of if you are into MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Kingdom is engaging on many levels. The acting is great, paired with the overall production, a show unlike any other is created.

just out LUKE CAGE SEASON 1 Mike Colter, Rosario Dawson

The premise of Marvel's Luke Cage is quite straightforward which has Mike Colter playing the title role, Luke Cage who is basically trying to stay under the rader in Harlem. Easier said then done when you are an impenetrable man and have bulletproof skin. Viewers who have kept up with Marvel's Netflix series already know Luke Cage as a key character in Marvel's Jessica Jones. If you are new to the character or are well versed with Luke Cage you will learn something new with the telling of this story. There are nods to Luke Cage's Power Man origins throughout the season but this time around he's an ex-cop who finds himself holed up in Harlem trying to stay under the radar. Luke is a hero who refuses to accept he is one and season 1’s story is of a person with incredible abilities learning how he can make the neighborhood a better place.

If you are into MMA, or combat sports in general this show is bang on. Throughout the series you can spot multiple UFC and other MMA stars. The show doesn't dumb it down for your average audience The fact is, that it doesn't need to, as the story line without focus on fighting alone, would deliver a great show. Add in the brutal world of making it in MMA, and you have viewing gold. The show is about relationships, and instead of any sugar coating it is fuelled by high end athletic endeavours, dealing with the ups and downs of the fight world and that life goes on win or lose. Whether you're a fighter or a ballerina check out Kingdom, you will not be disappointed.

The show's best strength is how it captures Harlem. From the music - the incredible hip hop-filled soundtrack is the highlight - to the shooting locations to the characters to the conflicts, all play their part in bringing Harlem to life. Mike Colter is excellent as Luke with a quiet performance that grounds the show. It's thanks to his powerful turn that Luke Cage works as well as it does. Rosario Dawson also puts in a good performance. Overall Luke Cage is another win for Marvel's Netflix shows. Grounding the show is Mike Colter as Luke Cage, who takes a character people might have thought they knew after Jessica Jones and gives him the right amount of depth. Luke Cage wasn't a complete win though and the second half of the season can plod on a bit from time to time but overall a good start to the character.

Heaven On Earth in The South of Thailand

Photos and words by Jessi Cotteril

I was on a long-tail boat cruising in a huge lake with a cool wind caressing my face. In front of me was emerald green water spreading wide ahead with its surface separated by several tall limestone islands, each one competing against the other to shoot out and up towards the sky. The scenery was stunning, yet somehow mysterious. Above dark heavy clouds floated among those tall peaks. It looked as if one of the sharp limestone tips could any time burst a fat black cloud and explode with rain at any moment. Today I was drawn by the idea to go boating on the lake, to overwhelm myself with the surrounding greenery and the far-flung water. When I bought the ticket it was suggested that I go to see "Guilin of Thailand". I knew that Guilin is a very beautiful city in China though I've never been there. I was wondering how Guilin of Thailand would look similar to the renowned Guilin in China. I was told that the shortest boat trip was 2 hours to see Guilin, and we’d stop at a floating restaurant for lunch. The price was 1,800 baht, but this is for the whole boat and I choose to take it all alone and have the 20 seats to myself. After buying the ticket, I walked down to the pier and paid the national park fee, this reservoir is in Khao Sok national park's area of responsibility and all visitors must pay a local or international fee.

lifestylesnapshot After about 45 minutes, the boat stopped in front of four limestone peaks bursting out of the crystal green water. The Tourism Authority of Thailand gave these the name "Guilin of Thailand" because of its similarity to the topography in Guilin city of China. Guilin of China is a very popular tourist destination, and some even say that "Guilin" is a heaven on earth. This duplicated name strategy has certainly increased the number of visiting Thai and foreign tourists to the Ratchaprapa Dam. This karst topography in Guilin of China was formed by a natural phenomenon, however, the lookalike karst formation in Guilin of Thailand is a result of the construction of the Ratchaprapa Dam, or the other name is Cheow Lan dam. The dam was built in 1982, and was completely finished in 1987. To build the dam, the place was flooded until it bacame a massive lake. This flood has separated mountains and hills into hundreds of peaks and islands, and that is what makes it look like the karst landscape in Guilin, China. After snapping a few shots of Thai Guilin, the boat took me to the floating restaurant for lunch. The restaurant was on a concrete base above the water with a thatched roof. On its left and right were interesting raft houses for people who would like to stay overnight. During my lunch, it finally started to rain, but I was lucky to be under the roof. Eating and looking out into the emerald lake, I was daydreaming of the scene when this area originally flooded. Under this water was once a virgin rainforest home to wildlife and distinctive plants. I couldn't imagine what a struggle it would be for those lives to trying to escape from the imminent water. Before the dam was completed, the villagers were told to move out of the area, and as much wildlife was relocated by the Thai forestry department as possible. Surely not an easy job when you think about having to catch wild animals when they don't understand your good intentions. The forest officers could also help some of those that were stuck on trees or small islands that the flood hadn’t yet reached. However, sadly there were still many that couldn't be found or helped in time before the flood. Ratchaprapa Dam is a hydroelectric dam that provides electricity to Suratthani and other provinces nearby. Its bypass benefits are agriculture, fishery, and tourism. Surathani is in the south of Thailand, you can fly for one hour from Bangkok to airport, or drive for about eight hours. From the airport to Ratchaprapa Dam is about one-hour drive. Arriving at the dam you can take a day trip to see the Guilin of Thailand, then stop at some raft house to kayak and swim. You can also stay overnight in a raft house. There are many of them to choose from at different spots in the reservoir. The ticket office at the pier can provide information about trips and the accommodation. A good time to visit Ratchaprapa Dam and Khao Sok National Park is in November to April. The rain had stopped and I finished my lunch. The clouds were still dark and heavy. It was time for me to cruise back and peacefully enjoy the heavenly scenery for the last time on this trip.

With a myriad of dining choices, Emirati food is often mistakenly overlooked. Mezlai, located at the luxurious Emirates Palace hotel, is the first dedicated Emirati cuisine restaurant in the UAE, and immerses you in the tastes and traditions of authentic, local dining. Serving a variety of dishes made to ancient Bedouin recipes, it uses carefully sourced, organic ingredients and native cooking methods. Meaning ‘the old lock of the door’, Mezlai prides itself on its infamous Arab hospitality. All guests are welcomed into the restaurant’s majlis with Abu Maan dates and fragrant spiced coffee giving you a chance to sit and relax in a comfortable nook of cushy Bedouin style sofas and pillows while admiring the Emirati heritage adorning the walls. As the temperature cools, we highly recommend dining on the outdoor terrace, as this intimate environment lends itself perfectly to extravagant views of both the Arabian Gulf and Emirates Palace.
