Floral couture dresses make waves once again…

Both geometry and flowers have been constant sources of inspiration for Tony Ward, so it only seemed a natural evolution for him to explore an interesting mixture of the two concepts, and create a collection based on the unique and complex patterns of flowers. After all, geometry is all around us, particularly in nature. For the Fall Winter 2017/18 couture collection, geometric floral patterns are re-invented and delicately handcrafted. Organic volumes are recreated with ethereal silks. The garments take shape in vibrant colors, such as burgundy and jade, soft shades like silver and rose and timeless black and white. Fascinated by the precision of the flowers’ shapes,Tony Ward meticulously examined their intricate outlines and re-imagined these elaborate forms in his creations. It’s no wonder nature has so much to offer.

Nothing more than

Stunning

Flamboyant and sophisticated, Georges Hobeika’s FW 2017/18 couture collection draws its vibrant energy from Andalusia’s ornamental traditions and its inspiration from the great architectural styles that have developed throughout the ages on the Iberian peninsula. It’s an ode to the palaces designed by artistic geniuses, forever filled with gold and harmonies. In sparkling reminiscence of Hispano-Moorish’s arts, this collection’s myriad of embroideries evokes the polychrome mosaics and geometric tesserae which embellished the majestic castles and fortified enclosures of Granada, Cordoba, or Seville. Gleaming pendants, generous pleats, sumptuous fabrics and bold superimpositions are composed across sets of free lines, colored explosions and forests of evocative patterns. Inspired by both the botanical world and living nature, curves and counter-curves magnify the sensuality of voluptuous dresses, which are sometimes embellished with enchanting capes and graceful boleros worthy of the Flamenco‘s homeland. Also recognizing the unique palatial temperance of religious monuments that represent the earliest Islamic architecture crafted as masterpieces of Mudéjar art, aerial lace and embroidery evoke the Moucharabieh’s arcades which allowed the illumination of interior alcazaba facades. The heat of the waning Granada summer is glorified by bursts of solar color and shimmering cooler shades, while sparkling crystals sometimes seem to summon the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees. Exquisitely crafted bags and bright jewels exalt Georges Hobeika’s stylistic exploration with their floral and arabesque decorations worthy of the majestic Alhambra. Accessories: Georges Hobeika

Your scent now comes in an Eccentric

fragrance bottle…

Black and white… dark and light… good girl, bad girl! It’s a unique combination. Not so long ago, Carolina Herrera New York introduced GOOD GIRL, a sensual, evocative fragrance born of the beautiful contradictions and the ever-present duality of modern women and modern life. Good Girl celebrates her spontaneity, complexity and power with a potent fragrance that embodies her paradoxical nature and yet is, in itself, delightfully simple and addictive. GOOD GIRL exemplifies the effortless elegance and wit of the House of Herrera. Developed for the House of Herrera by the world-renowned perfumer Louise Turner, GOOD GIRL is both freshly light and moodily dark. This innovative fragrance that captures a woman’s wondrous complexity juxtaposes surprising and exceptional ingredients. The sweet, alluring qualities of jasmine give GOOD GIRL its brightness and femininity. The darker side of GOOD GIRL is created with richly fragrant cocoa and intoxicating Tonka. Almond and coffee bring GOOD GIRL its immediate vibrancy.Tuberose, extracted in a new way that creates a rich delicacy, is what Louise Turner calls the fragrance’s “wild card,” bringing “fluidity and femininity”. Rarely do fragrance bottles make the potent emotional statement that the GOOD GIRL bottle does. A glass flacon of a very high-heeled shoe, it speaks as eloquently of the power of modern femininity and a woman’s dual nature as the fragrance itself. Made of sleek, smoky midnight blue glass, the GOOD GIRL stiletto bottle stands on the tallest, thinnest gold heel.

GOOD GIRL’s ground-breaking bottle, the first fragrance bottle in the form of a high heel, is ingenious in its technology as well as in design. The spray is diffused by means of a sophisticated release near the top of the bottle, which has a complex internal pressure system that was developed over four years with more than six hundred internal tests to create a mechanical function that was compatible with the unique, slender bottle. An unexpected, highly innovative fragrance in a bottle as memorable and emotionally engaging as the fragrance itself, GOOD GIRL captures the spirit and imagination of a modern powerful woman. The new fragrance is available in 30 ml, 50 ml and 80 ml around the world. It’s available in Spain, Portugal, Middle East, Russia and EMAD countries and Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Peru and Panama countries. www.carolinaherrera.com

Day Trip on the Hip Horizons Sports Cruiser Yacht

Some Memories will never fade

O N E CO A S T

ur holidays on Koh Samui have always been something special, there’s something about this small tropical island that makes it part of your soul. It gets into your blood and I can remember often sitting at home and dreaming of our next trip which could never come around soon enough. This last trip was as always stunning, dream beaches and heavenly Thai food and one day was just incredible and in itself made this holiday memorable. Our Day trip with the Hip Horizons Sports Cruiser Yacht. We choose the journey option of Koh Samui Sunset Pier - Angthong Marine Park - Koh Phangan – Samui. We started at Sunset pier in Ban Rak which was a great and easy location within 15 to 20mins of Chaweng, Ban Rak, Plai Laem, Choengmon, Bophut, Maenam. The manager greeted us at the pier and proudly showed us the Fairline Targa 52 explaining that this was the “classic car” of sports cruisers with its beautiful lines and being very reliable (also because she is in regular use). The upkeep of this yacht was obviously to par with that of the proud owner of an Aston Martin Vanquish. Meticulously cleaned, maintained and pampered by a very professional crew. The decking was in immaculate teak with a crisp white and navy blue colour scheme throughout which was matched perfectly by the crew’s uniforms. We took our shoes off at the pier and stepped on-board, there were various spots to choose from, sun worshippers made themselves happy at the stern while the bow was cooler allowing seating in the shade or even air con for those wanting escape from the heat or take a nap in the lower deck, here there was the lounge and 2 cabins. There’s a 3rd lounge but that was used for storage of all the snorkelling gear, food and trip stock etc., for the boating aficionados you could also keep the captain company standing at the helm and check out the nautical map. First our route was set for the Angthong National Marine Park and the Captain started the engines and with a powerful growl that had certainly quite a few ponies behind it we set off on our way. With an average cruising speed of 24knots we neared the Marine Park in hardly anytime. The famous park has 68+ islands some of which are some amazing shapes and names including the Sphinx and a wailing Monkey. Most of the islands are uninhabited apart from the parks rangers and offer crystal clear water and coral reefs galore. Just gently cruising along you could already see the stunning colours of the reefs below and its residents. There are snorkelling opportunities galore and on the house equipment: snorkels, masks, flippers (all adult sizes available) but always under the watchful eye of the crew. We loved the floatables with two buoys and noodles galore while we chilled floating around. One was just perfect as a prop whilst using our go-pro, and the tender was always available to hug the coast or access shallow waters or a remote beach. We found one that looked like it had never seen mankind and we enjoyed cocktails and a delicious picnic set up by the crew. Here it seemed that the world had stopped turning and walking along the beach you could imagine leaving the first man made foot prints in the white sand.

But the day was not over but only beginning, then it was off to the island of Koh Phangan. First port of call was a sophisticated yet relaxed Lunch at Sand in my Shoes (named after Dido’s song title from 2003) at Thong Nai Pan Noi. Then we nipped over to the next bay Thong Nai Pan Yai for a crisp cheeky cold draft Beer at Flip Flop Pharmacy. We sailed from one dream to another and even on route the crew made us feel like family. Flexible with our demands, trusting enough to give us “breathing space” or kind enough to let us get involved and letting us to stop at the deserted beach that just caught our attention. Unlimited complimentary beverages were available including water, espresso and coffee varieties, soft drinks, beer and my favourite a perfectly brewed English cup of tea. The ambiance and vibe are just mesmerising and my partner connected himself with the staffs consent via blue-tooth to the Fusion music system. We played our favourite playlist on the 45min journey from the marine park to Koh Phangan, small details like this made our day so personal and special. Being a social media fanatic I was taking some great shots and uploading them straight away using the available 4G Mobile Wi-Fi on-board. Around the park itself there’s no mobile coverage at all and this was an experience I had to share and would certainly be something I came back to Samui to do again.

Cruising back to Koh Samui Southbound, the sun is stolen for a few minutes by the lush virgin mountain terrains then reappears in all its romantic sunset time glory as we pass Haad Rin, famous for the full moon party. We all marvel at the beauty the islands offer, our hearts pumping with love and awe. Speaking with the Captain and paying a surcharge for the extra gasoline we got permission to go “full throttle” so exhilarating and very fast, the Captain put the craft through its paces with extreme port then starboard turns like doing doughnuts in an F1 car. With screams of excitement and arms up in the air we were like teenagers on a rollercoaster. Just before sunset the light hits that magical hour, everything and everyone is photogenic, the sea glimmers in the fading sunlight and is the perfect temperature for a last dip, for us all was well in the world, all worries were gone and it was only difficult to take that silly grin off our faces. Returning to Sunset Pier we were partly sad the day was over but with hugs of gratitude to a wonderful professional crew, we’d had a full day of laughter, rich visuals, colours, love, nature and life. These were memories to cherish and remember, thank you Hip horizons for a very special day. How The Modern World is Making You Lose Your

Spidey Sense By Rodney King

Last week while running a training event at Google and AirBnB with Aaron Le Boutillier and I made a prediction. In the coming decade, what we are going to most struggle with in the Western world, the thing that will be most evident (if it isn’t already) is our lack of general awareness in everyday life. I don’t mean focus that leads to concentration. It is clear that giving a person something of value to do (even if it is some silly game with no real point), that people can, if needed focus intently on the task at hand. Focus can be defined as the act of concentrating your interest or activity on something. In this respect, to concentrate on one thing, you must, by default, ignore many other things. And this is where I think the real issue lies. It seems to me, when people don’t have something they must focus on, or are told to focus on, they are completely distracted by default. Have you tried walking through a mall in Bangkok lately? It’s like running an obstacle race. People are there, but they are not very aware of their surroundings. In fact, it does seem that no one else exists but themselves. Conscientiousness of ones’ behaviour and how it may impact others in social environments seems to have been lost (nowhere is this more evident than in emerging economies who are racing to be like everyone else in the West). Everyone seems to be on their own mission, lost in their own world. There is a likely a multitude of reasons for this.

The Reasons for Our General Distractions People now spend so much time in the virtual world of the internet, that real in the flesh experiences have become lost in-between virtual reality. I mean, just look at how people can’t even enjoy a walk down the street in the fresh spring air, without being completely connected to their phones. The push towards individualism too at all costs, breeds a competitive state of being, that tends to exclude other people, especially

strangers. As one high level security expert told me at dinner last week, “If there ever is a crisis in Singapore, don’t expect Singaporean’s to stop and help you, they will all be trying to save themselves.” If that’s true, it’s very sad, but I don’t believe it is unique to Singapore. Inject any other Western countries name into that space, and I believe the outcome would be similar. As a security expert myself, it concerns me too, that people’s lack of general awareness seems to be disappearing. Unlike focus that is a concentrated effort on an interest or activity, which requires a concentration on one thing, to the exclusion of others — a general sense of awareness is an open attention to everything in the outside world, including oneself. Something a person absolutely needs to remain safe. One can quite easily see how the ability to be generally aware by its very nature is increasingly becoming difficult, as it does seem that everything (especially those pesky marketers) are always vying for a piece of our attentional real estate. Instead of tuning in, we seem to be tuning out, even in simply walking down the street.

People Are Scrambling to Be Mindful, But It May Not Be Why You Think I am not surprised then by the global rise of mindfulness in the West. Most put it down to people wanting to find a more productive way to manage their stress, but I think, as people feel more and more disconnected

body&mindmindful lifestyle from themselves, and by default the world, mindfulness has offered a way for people to become more in-tune with their awareness of the world and themselves in it. I think people miss that deep connection. In other words, the paradox of how the Western world is going, we have become disembodied in a world that requires an embodied nature to be truly happy. No matter if you want to be truly happy, or keep yourself safe in unpredictable environments, it requires an open attention to the world you find yourself in. Therefore, I believe mindfulness is an important tool to cultivate no matter if your walking down the dangerous streets of Lahore, Pakistan, or craving the need to feel more connected to the planet you live in. Mindfulness allows you to expand your attentional field. As I noted to one participant of my mindfulness-in-action workshop at Google, by being more mindful you are more in-tune with your intuition. From a safety stand point, intuition, by which I mean, your ability to trust your evolutionary embodied system to pick up subtle clues in the environment which is simply not possible if you are distracted — awakens. Most people think of intuition as some kind of mystical energy system reserved for those irrationals among us. But at least as I define it, intuition is the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning. In my experience the only way to achieve this is by being more mindful.

What Is Mindfulness? Thereare many operational definitions of mindfulness. John Kabat-Zinn describes mindfulness as “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment”. This paying attention to experience moment to moment, as Dane (2011) points out, centres on both internal and external events in our perceptual field. In other words, it encompasses all the factors of experience of which a person is conscious at a given time (Brown et al., 2007). On the other hand, Langer (2002) defines mindfulness as “a flexible state of mind in which we are actively engaged in the present, noticing new things and sensitive to context,” compared to a state of mindlessness where we “act according to the sense our behaviour made in the past, rather than the present … we are stuck in a single, rigid perspective and we are oblivious to alternative

ways of knowing”. In other words, to be mindless is to ruminate on the past, or be focused on the future. When this happens one is considered to no longer be mindful (Brown and Ryan, 2003). If I return for a moment to what I noted earlier in this article, people these days are in a general sense distracted all the time. This constant distraction, not only removes a person from immediate experience, but in addition, makes them less generally aware of both environment, and other people. In other words, they no longer have much ‘experience’ with the present moment. The paradox is this, that to have a general sense of awareness, requires a person to be open to experiences as they arise. If one can then do that, and not judge those experiences both internally and externally, you are then able to be more intuitive to context. Which, in my mind, both for the average person, or security specialists at large, allows them to be more aware of situational variables in their immediate surroundings, which increases their Spidey sense to potential danger!

Being Aware Needs To Be Trained in our Modern World Being more generally aware then, is a skill that now must be retrained in the modern world. I am not saying it will defeat all the bad guy attempts out there, but I do believe being more mindful, especially in environments that may require attention to context due to potential danger, is crucial in this day and age. If you are a security specialist, and you are not training people in this crucial skill, people’s general lack of awareness these days puts them at a much greater risk than ever before. But beyond that, being more mindfully aware, makes life more manageable. Being more connected to the present moment as it arises, without judging every moment, makes modern life seem easier to handle. I believe increasingly this will be a skill that can no longer be taken for granted. It should be taught, not only in security courses around the world, but simply to allow people to live a more fulfilling life. EmbodiedMBA 5 day programs are run at Tree Roots Retreat and can be tailored to meet your needs. Please email aaron@treerootsretreat.com for more details on all our mindfulness in action programs. We are very excited to again be working with Phuket to host the Foremost IRONMAN 70.3 Thailand 2017, a race that has already earned a reputation as being one of the toughest and most beautiful courses on the IRONMAN 70.3 calendar,” said Mr. Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, President of Sunrise Events Inc. and rights holder for IRONMAN in South East Asia. “Phuket is well known for being a leading sports tourism destination and hosting this world-class event, the Foremost IRONMAN 70.3 Thailand, underscores the island’s sports tourism credentials. We are looking forward to a very successful event and also to welcoming Thai and international participants from around the world,” said Mr. Sanit Srivihok,Vice Governor of Phuket Province.

body&mindwellness Former regional champions and in-form international Pros will compete for a US$15,000 (approx. 500,000THB) prize purse while the thirty age-group qualifying slots available for the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in South Africa will draw many of Asia’s top age-groupers. Preparing oneself for triathlon calls for continuous training and good choice of food to ensure optimized diets for the body’s needs while also building strength for the competition. Foremost has, therefore, prepared our chocolate flavoured milk to give away to participating triathletes of Foremost IRONKIDS Thailand and Foremost IRONMAN 70.3 Thailand 2017 to help energizing them throughout the race because a key to athletic excellence is to keep one’s body fit and active.”

“Entries are already strong and the international Pros are confirming their attendance. While competing in an IRONMAN 70.3 is no easy feat, we are seeing more Thai age-groupers registering this year and we’re very excited to help grow the sport in Thailand,” added Mr. Uytengsu.

The Foremost IRONMAN 70.3 Thailand starts with a one-loop 1.9km swim in the pristine waters off Bang Tao Beach, followed by a 90km bike traversing the island’s northern hills and coastline, and finishes with an energy-sapping 21km two-loop run through the Cherng Talay area. Well known for its beauty, the course is also challenging and will push Individual and Team Relay participants to their limits.

Thank you Pearly for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with us, can you tell us a little about where you were born and your family? I was born in Bangkok, Thailand. I moved to Tasmania, Australia when I was young and then to Switzerland for University and back to Bangkok to help run my family business. Looking at your portfolio I’m surprised you have anytime at all, you are Vice President of the Miracle Group in Thailand and Asia Director of the One Young World. The Miracle Group has the Transit Hotel at Suvarnabhumi Airport plus eleven lounges at both International airports. What has been your company vision with setting up this large enterprise? Well we have been in the business for over 25 years now. Dad has been in the airport industry since he was younger so it has been an ongoing industry for us. Hospitality has been in my blood, I have been running around hotels since I can remember. You can’t be in the hospitality industry if you don’t love it. So I wouldn’t say I only love it but I am obsessed with the industry and through the years (I have been working in the family business for over 10 years now) we just continue to grow. When I say we, it is not just my family but our hard working team. The team comprises of incredible people who have been working tirelessly alongside my father, my older brother and myself and the new team who has just joined us. You’ve just taken over the Singapore airline lounge at Suvarnabhumi Airport, where would you say your success lies in your expansion? We are lucky enough to have been trusted by the Airport authority of Thailand to expand throughout both airports and this is to create amazing services across both airports and to represent Thailand well. One Young World is a name I actually know, as my nephew was chosen to represent the UK two years ago at your Bangkok summit, they are a UK-based charity that gathers together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change. How did you get around to being involved in such a worthy cause? In 2013, I read an article about One Young World in the Vanity Fair magazine (and was lucky enough to be featured in the magazine in 2015) and represented Thailand at the summit in Jo’Burg in 2013, then again in Dublin and won the bid for Bangkok in 2015. I was inspired. Your passion for hard work and life also goes to sustainability and saving our planet, where do you see yourself making a difference here? I cant change everything but I believe I can change something. Do you have any projects that you would like to tell us about? Guess we will have to wait and see. Miracle Group is growing bigger and bigger quite rapidly in the last couple of years. Even with your busy schedule you take the time to stay fit, what do you have for a fitness routine? I am currently doing PIlates and Badminton. I am always busy but I will make sure to find the time to do either one. If there was something you could change in this world what would it be? More more more KINDNESS. Where is your favourite place in Thailand to relax? Koh Samui, Hua Hin or Chiangmai (I need to find time though!) or my favourite place on earth, home with my doggies. Tonight, you’re going to your favourite restaurant, where do you go and what do you choose? Dragon Restaurant at MIracle Grand Convention Hotel, Australia Abalone in Oyster sauce. O N E CO A S T

Tell us about yourself I was born and raised in France. I completed my law school with a Master of Laws attended at the City University of Hong Kong, at a time where China has just adhered to the WTO. I didn’t know this travel would forever change my life. The firm I was articling with in Paris with had difficulties at that time to find candidates to develop their Chinese offices and sent me straight back on a way ticket with 2 boxes to Beijing. I then moved to Shanghai where I worked for 9 years in the M&A field assisting MNCs to invest into large industrial projects.

Bastien Trelcat This issue of One Coast Magazine welcomes for the About Him section Bastien Trelcat, Managing Partner of Harvey Law Group and the expert in 2nd citizenship and permanent residency. 44

focusabout him What do you do? I am acting now as the Managing Partner of Harvey Law Group, a “VIP” law firm as we like to call it serving mostly High Net Worth Individuals in their investment and appetite for more mobility. I am running the operations in all SouthEast Asia from Myanmar to Cambodia, Thailand to Vietnam and recently the Philippines. You travel around so much, how do you feel about being a world citizen? It is a great feeling to fulfil probably one of my life accomplishments and my quest to be able to visit every possible country in the world or to come back to cities where you have friends and navigate through, in a familiar way. But it’s also very pleasant not to be limited by visa restrictions. I hate applying for visas and being in a position where my freedom is in the hands of somebody else. Why did you choose to settle in Bangkok Thailand? A client of mine requested my help to complete an acquisition in Thailand and ramifications in China. I got to work from Bangkok for 6 months and realized that after 9 years in China, Thailand was probably the next destination. Food wise, ethic wise, I found a lot of common aspects with my French culture. What’s your favourite past time? Travelling. Going where I haven’t been yet with a book from a local artist. And my cats, Sunset & Showpow. They are both adopted from PAWS Bangkok. Name few of your favourite cities in the world Hong Kong has kept a special place. You just can’t forget the first time you see Victoria Harbour coming off Tsim Sha Tsui station. I love Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Phnom Penh for their mix of colonial heritage and modernism. Grenada in the Caribbean is a nice place to chill and taste local flavour (there is a reason why it is called the Spice Islands) at the end of a Caribbean tour. What’s in a day of an international lawyer It usually starts early to reach our offices in Montreal and Miami before they close. Canada and US are still premium destinations where our clients want to invest and relocate. Then comes what I call the “email trimming” period, where I just look for the most urgent ones to answer. Arriving in BKK office. Coffee. Discussing with the staff. Coffee. Checking LinkedIn. Coffee. Phone call to my partner in Hong Kong to review the midyear figures results in Manila Office. Lunch with the team. Phone call to Yangon to prepare the trip next week. Answering emails, contract review, invoicing. Leaving office to the airport to Cambodia and calling our Caribbean offices in Dominica and Grenada to follow-up on investment applications and coming road show from local real estate developers in Asia. As an international lawyer specializing in investment immigration, could you tell us about the freedom in global mobility? In my life project of discovering the world, I’ve never seen borders but possibilities. I have these pro-trade, pro-immigration and pro-European values deeply rooted into my soul. I have always seen the world as a small place where places are just a few flying hours away. As to my family complaining that I have decided to live far away, I always answer that I can be back the next morning if need be. Travelling with-

out the hassle of formalities has been promoted as a luxury only possible to those “happy few”. It is no longer the case. Many countries in the world have adopted an economic citizenship by Investment as low as 100,000 USD. Whether you need to attend a business meeting or the birth of your grand-daughter in Europe, today you can just plan that trip overnight with your credit card by obtaining a second citizenship. If you want to give your kids an international exposure to a city like Toronto, London or Sydney without depending on school’s quotas or reviews of your study permit application, simply invest in a government approved program in Canada, UK or Australia that will come with the status of permanent resident for you and your kids. What do you envision for Southeast Asia within your industry? Southeast Asia is only at the very beginning of enjoying the benefits of the investment immigration possibilities but Asean citizens are reacting fast: Vietnamese have become the 2nd largest recipients of US green cards through the EB5 program (ie. investment of 500,000 USD). Other countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia and Philippines are behind in terms of numbers of citizens but are busy coping with a fast growing economy but the numbers show significant growth every year. What do you have to say to the “sceptics” claiming these programs welcome criminals and money laundering? I would say come and see for yourself. HLG is a law firm obeying to many different law societies on ethics and handling clients’ funds. All professionals of this industry are well known and do not hide sealing deals and accepting large amount of cash behind closed doors. Before accepting a client, the firm does its own due diligence on this person. If I deem that the applicant is eligible and clean, the government to which I have sent the file will also carry out 2 or 3 independent background checks including INTERPOL, FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Funds transiting through our escrow accounts and National Banks are audited at every transfer. Last but not the least: anyone with a bad reputation in this industry can not last long. We all know each other. What advice would you recommend people interested in citizenship-by-investment to check? First, I always tell my clients that this is a trust business: a client puts his dream or a project of life into your hands to make it happen. And to build trust it takes time so don’t rush, make your own due diligence on this investment, in this particular country. Keep asking questions until all of them are answered. Secondly hire a service provider who has an office in your country of residence and who offers all programs not just some of them. Lastly, don’t believe in guaranteed returns. Most of those programs come at risk. For instance, the regulations on US EB5 program (green card) clearly say that the investment must come at risk which makes any guarantee from a project owner illegal leading to the cancellation of your green card. What’s your next travelling d estination? I have just come from Vanuatu, a 2-and-a-half-hour flight from Australia East Cost as the firm was recently appointed as global representative of the Vanuatu citizenship by investment program. My next destination will be Roseau in the Commonwealth of Dominica. As you know, Dominica was badly hit by hurricanes recently and this beautiful island needs more than ever more investment and contributions to rebuild its magnificence. O N E CO A S T

Struck by Lightning

Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work. Mark Twain Lightning LS-218 Motorcycle If you’d asked me a little while ago about electric motorcycles or electric vehicles in general I would have thought of some whirring golf cart or the electric bike my son used to ride around the yard. But if you thought about it sensibly in 2017 an electrical motor can produce as much or more power as a conventional engine but has hardly any moving parts and can be far more economical. Well there are already a swarm of electric bikes full of innovative technology on the market but today we take a closer look at the Lightning LS-218. Lightning Motorcycle have designed and produced a Sport bike sure to change the minds of anyone doubting electric motorcycle performance. 50

lifestylecoast ride

The LS-218 is the fastest production motorcycle in the world. Lightning’s company internal company challenge is “As good as, is not good enough”. Their goal was not to build electric bikes that are as good as ICE (internal combustion Engine) bikes; but build bikes that can achieve things that are not possible with ICE bikes. What was most exciting to the team at Lightning was the knowledge that they were just at the beginning of what’s possible for electric motorcycles. Lightning consists of a small group of passionate engineers pushing the envelope of what’s possible. They currently have a motor that will make close to 300hp that weighs less than 44lbs. They are currently designing an electric race only bike utilizing some of new technologies that will make well over 270 rear wheel hp and weigh less than 380lbs. Very few people would have believed in 2006 when they built their first prototype that in 6 years it would win first over all (Beating all the legacy motorcycle company teams including Honda and Ducati) at Pike’s Peak and set a production motorcycle record run of 218mph at Bonneville. Although believers in the social benefits of alternative energy, Lightning didn’t want to sell electric bikes solely because of green initiatives and legal mandates. Most motorcycles are purchased because they create excitement and ignite passion with motorcyclists. Customers purchase Lightning motorcycles because they are better bikes. They have massive power available instantly, don’t heat up in traffic, don’t vibrate, are easier to ride, and go like hell. In addition to being very high performance motorcycles, they are also the most efficient motorcycles. The Lightning LS-218 with 200 hp and 168 ft·lbs of torque is currently the fastest, most exciting production motorcycle in the world. And it is also the most maintenance free. The advanced technology that makes up the LS-218 does not require oil changes, tune-ups, spark plugs, or filters…or gasoline. There is no need for a transmission, so there is no clutch or gear shifting; only the pure joy of riding without limitations. Not only is this motorcycle the fastest production motorcycle in the world, it is also the most maintenance free, and most economical to run. After their 218mph run at Bonneville Lightning Company measured the energy required to recharge their bikes and determined that they were achieving the equivalent of over 50mpg while averaging over 200mph. The Lightning LS-218 is equally suited to track days or weekend rides on your favourite back roads. Lightning Motorcycles has partnered with Race Tech for track ready suspension development, and every Lightning Super Bike is factory equipped with track mapping data acquisition. The Lightning Electric Super Bike has a usable freeway speed range of over 100 miles and a combined city and highway EPA range of over 150 miles and a top speed potential of over 218 mph. And for those of you concerned with recharging the batteries they will only need 30 mins on a DC fast charger or 120 minutes on level 2 charger and the 380V 12 kwh battery pack has range of 100-120 miles per charge while the 380V 15 kwh battery pack can do a range of 120-150 miles per charge and the top level 380V 20 kwh battery pack can take you to 160-180 miles. With a weight of only 495 lbs, an IPM liquid cooled 150kw+ 10,500 rpm electric motor and a seat height of 32 inches, Brembo dual and radial mounted brakes with Öhlins suspension Lightning have produced a bike that is going to be very hard to strike.

Genovation eXtreme The Chevrolet Corvette is the world’s Fastest Street-Legal Electric Car.

Many presume the Tesla Model S is the fastest electric car in the world. The new model P90D can, after all, hit 60 mph in less than 2.8 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph which is certainly nothing to be shy about. But surprisingly, it doesn’t hold the record as the fastest electric car in the world. That record belongs to an electric Corvette called the Genovation eXtreme Electric with an incredible 205.6mph.

52

O N E CO A S T

lifestylecoast drive

Officially called the Genovation GXE, the prototype has all the earmarks of a normal Corvette on the outside. Inside the Genovation Extreme Electric car (GXE) you won’t find its usual 6.2-liter V8 engine. Rather, it’s equipped with a dual-stack twin motor system that produces a whiplash-inducing 600-hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. The GXE might not make the same great Corvette sounds we are used to and love, but on the other hand, never having to pay for gas again might be worth it and its 130-mile range on a single charge is pretty awesome. The motors are positioned fore and aft to create a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. Handling is very much a part of Genovation’s vision of electric performance, though right now the group is focused more on outright speed. Power is generated from a 44 kwh battery that, under normal driving conditions, can power the GXE for 150 miles before needing a recharge. Clipping 190 mph in a standing mile obviously isn’t normal driving, but it’s a feat no other electric company has matched in a street-legal car. It’s not cheap. Genovation says that the GXE will now cost $750,000. That’s about 10 times the price of a new C7 Grand Sport Corvette. The company is going for exclusivity with only a limited quantity of 75 vehicles and they promise that each vehicle will be unique because they will involve the customers in the individual design and finishing process. If you want one though, you need to have a lot of trust in the start-up since they require a deposit of $250,000 and they don’t expect to ship the vehicle until Q4 of 2019 after a 2-year design period and 1 year build time. https://genovationcars.com

Consider a 2nd Passport

or Permanent Residency, the gateway to Global Business Mobility Harvey Law Group is Asia’s pioneer in investment immigration services for entrepreneurs and high net worth individuals. The expression ‘Investment Immigration’ or ‘Global Business Mobility’ was created by Harvey Law Group Founder Mr. Jean-François Harvey. It refers to the absolute freedom to extract oneself from any painful or long administrative process when it comes to travel or to relocate overseas.Whether it is to attend an unexpected meeting in Paris, Beijing or New York or to relocate your family to Canada or Australia (the 2 new education powerhouses), global business mobility can be planned with obtaining a 2nd passport or 2nd residency.

fashioncover Business Mobility is also related to business expansion as the way one’s business grows and how it is seen as a gauge of an enterprise’s success. For many Asian entrepreneurs, the idea of expanding one’s business overseas is not only daunting but a challenge that may not be worthwhile when considering the cost and effort involved in applying for the necessary documents to set up a business abroad. Many individuals overlook some of the basic necessities to make the business a success through expansion. One particular way such an expansion can be made easier is for business owners to apply for citizenship in another country, particularly one with a passport that has wider access and coverage to global markets. For example, the Thai government has a relatively relaxed stance with regard to overseas investment. Therefore, the notion of having a second passport with which to facilitate corporate transactions and expansion will certainly appeal to local businessmen who are keen to break into foreign markets. Those interested in achieving citizenship elsewhere, can use the services of Harvey Law Group (HLG) to assist and guide them forward to enable them to make those visions a reality. HLG, an immigration law firm was founded in 1992 by Jean-Francois Harvey, and over the last 25 years, the law firm and its services have become well known as one of the top choices for many businesses, individuals, and – in the role of a legislative consultant – governments across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. Today, HLG has 15 offices worldwide and recently won the ALB Award for Immigration Law Firm of the Year 2017 in Hong Kong for the second time already since its creation in 2014. “We are the only reference in South East Asia in Investment Immigration” Due in part to the wave of immigration which occurred in the aftermath of Hong Kong’s 1997 turnover to Mainland China, HLG has had extensive dealings throughout Asia. HLG opened the doors to South East Asia with Vietnam in 2008,Thailand since 2013 and more recently Myanmar, the Philippines and Cambodia.

Despite investment immigration being a ‘hot’ topic and dominating the life of individuals and businesses, HLG Managing Partner Attorney for South East Asia Bastien Trelcat explains “we are the only reference in South East Asia when it comes to investment immigration laws. In the context of global business mobility, what we do is work with high net-worth individuals who are seeking to add another dimension to their business life.” HLG’s options for global business mobility include assistance for individuals who are seeking a second passport with which to start new ventures or to expand existing businesses into foreign territory. Bastien explains “Many businessmen want a second passport; it makes life a lot easier when you’re setting up shop. Our business is based on the concept of Citizenship-by-Investment: you are granted citizenship and a passport in exchange for making a donation in the country’s infrastructure fund or invest in specific real estate in the host country.” Whilst HLG is predominately an immigration law firm, the firm’s portfolio also includes company formation in different international jurisdictions; guidance for commercial leases, joint venture agreements, and contracts for strategic alliances; cross-border trade issues; property ownership structure and other concerns regarding real estate; and provisions for mergers and acquisitions. The firm prides itself in assisting its clients achieve its goals whether it be through investment immigration or ensuring its business clients continue to focus on the service they provide, whilst knowing that HLG have the commercial aspect of their business under control.

“Seamless and Painless” But going back to HLG’s primary metier, applying for foreign citizenship tends to be a long, drawn-out process that entails numerous documents, considerable expenses, and a great deal of uncertainty. Moreover, the various steps involved in the process can be bewildering if one does not have the proper guidance. HLG prides itself on assisting its clientele every step of the way. Over the years, it has steadily integrated itself into the culture and legal practices of the nations it operates in. HLG is duly licensed by most Citizenship-by-Investment Programs to promote and submit applications on behalf of investors. This allows for the seamless, even painless, approach to conducting and building businesses on foreign shores. “We also assist our clients with regard to their dependents.Their children’s education overseas is another type of investment, as well as investments involving real estate for both personal and professional use,” adds Trelcat. To date, HLG has enabled its clients to avail of different Citizenship-by-Investment and entrepreneurial support programmes in several jurisdictions, notably in Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Cyprus, France, Singapore, St. Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia,Thailand, Cambodia, UK, USA, New Zealand, Canada, and many more. Likewise, particularly for the interest of Thai and Filipino investors, the firm also facilitates applications for the E2 Visa and EB-5 Investment Programme for the United States;Tier I visas for the United Kingdom; Investor Stream and Significant Investor visas for Australia and New Zealand; as well as the Start-up Visa Program and Quebec Immigrant Investor Program for Canada. “We see ourselves as something as a corporate solutions provider,” Trelcat says about the way HLG assists its clients throughout the journey. “We want to educate our clients how to spread and mitigate risks with regard to applying for investor immigrant status, as well as structuring their business and personal lives when they move.” Another hallmark of the firm is their emphasis on integrity in all their dealings, ensuring that every process is done properly. Two sets of due diligence are involved with each transaction that passes through the ranks, ensuring that the client has no pending issues in his or her home country and that the client is a potential asset to the nation he or she will be moving to. Being a law firm, HLG uses an escrow account to ensure client’s money is safe at all times.

More than just opening doors to a world of possibilities, HLG strives to be a force for progress in global business. Its work has enabled the transfer of viable talents and investments from one nation to another, encouraging the growth of both industry and the international economy for years to come. What Citizenship and Permanent Residency Programs are available? USA offers permanent residency through an investment in a “business at risk” and creating 10 jobs currently set at USD500,000. Thailand is an E2 country and Thai and Filipino Citizens can enjoy a 2 years’ renewable visa to the US as long as they keep the business they created on US soil. Australia grants permanent residency with an investment starting at 1.5 mil. AUD and Canada at USD 250,000 (approx.). UK is a much expensive destination: GBP 2 mil. In Europe, on the high end of the CIPs spectrum, Malta (167 countries visa free), Cyprus (158) and Bulgaria (154), are three countries offering a citizenship by investment option to HNWIs, literally unlocking the concept of acquiring a European passport, and hence the right to reside, live, work and study in an EU member country, with Cyprus being the most popular option among Thai nationals as it consists in a 2 mil. EUR real estate investment. Bulgaria is 1 mil EUR into Government bonds (approx.) while Malta comes with a 1.3 mil EUR investment (including a EUR650,000 donation to the Government). The Portugal “Golden Visa” is very popular for applicants investing EUR 500,000 into real estate since a 5 years’ visa is granted (minimum stay required) and this visa can further lead to permanent residency and even citizenship if the applicant shows basic Portuguese language skills among certain other conditions. Eastern Caribbean countries offer more affordable CIP options: St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada and St. Lucia. Despite the fixed investment price for each CIP, for HNWIs nowadays, passports are truly “collectibles” with priceless value while some Caribbean options only start at USD100,000 attracting several thousand new applicants every year. The Republic of Vanuatu (Federation of islands in the Pacific Ocean) is the latest addition on the CIP market with a single applicant donation starting at 220,000 USD and USD 280,000 for a family of up to 4 persons. Applications can be submitted through any Vanuatu Information Center.

Tulum Treehouse

A private jungle retreat opens This September, in the dense mangrove vegetation of Tulum, a secret retreat is ready to welcome discerning adventurers and respite-seekers worldwide. Nestled amongst a swaying sea of lush emerald palms, the Tulum Treehouse is a private home located a stone’s throw from the heart of Tulum - yet it is a fortuitous jungle setting near the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve that sets this experience apart. Here, a five-bedroom house has been created by local craftspeople in collaboration with an international design team, collectively putting sustainability above all. Large common areas, several spacious wrap-around terraces, multiple spaces for indoor-outdoor living, and five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms make up this exclusive, full-service jungle escape. O N E CO A S T

61

The Idea Located on Tulum’s most lively stretch on the main beach road yet set in the secluded jungle, the white concrete house enveloped by verdant foliage is bringing a new offering of tranquility to the enigmatic scene. “We were sparked by the desire to develop new hospitality models which embody the lifestyle of today’s nomads. Those seeking genuine and innovative experiences centered around the respect and appreciation of local traditions, food, music, and rituals. Simply said, the true connectors to the people and culture of any given destination,” says Juan Pablo Heredia, partner of the Tulum Treehouse. An exercise in collective creativity, the the team behind the project assembled regional artisans, architects, builders, and international creatives to bring the private home to life.“After years in the region, learning about the local craftspeople talent, it was our idea to pair them with international design knowledge and aesthetics to create a one-of-a-kind reinterpretation of jungle living,” says Heredia of the core inspiration for the project.

The Makers The Tulum-based, full-service architecture studio CoLab Design Office has taken the natural beauty of the Yucatan as primary inspiration, conscious not only to preserve and protect the bio-dynamically rich environment, but to also create a stay deeply connected to the natural world. This means an abundance of locally sourced natural materials like Tzalam wood and handcrafted finishes render rooms built around views of nature, gentle breezes, light and shadows, to create new compositions and relationships. Bringing a global aesthetic to the project, interior designer and stylist Annabell Kutucu has collaborated with Co-Lab, imparting her singular sensibilities for organic earthiness. Upcycled furniture from Jorge and Rita, a local family of carpenters, handwoven baskets by Rosalinda, individually crafted Oaxacan ceramics by La Chicharra, and textiles by Mexican label Caravana sit in harmony against a polished concrete canvas. Light and air flow through tranquil rooms appointed with Oaxacan rugs and bespoke furnishings by Meridian artisans or sourced from Mexico City’s weekend antique market. Amenities are a labor of love by Lolita Lolita, a Tulum-based all-natural line specializing in organic skin care, body oils, hair care, and other aromatic products such as candles and love potions. Looking to the region’s health rituals and fertile biodiversity and inspired by recipes handed down from grandmother to mother to daughter, Lolita Lolita relies on indigenous natural ingredients like aloe vera, chile, peppermint, rosemary, and honey to create unique tonics devoted to robust health of body, mind, and spirit.

New perspectives Catering to new ways friends and family are traveling together, one where the intimacy of a private home meets the full-service levels of a high-end hotel, the Tulum Treehouse is the culmination of a new breed of compelling hospitality experiences. Through a flexible design concept, the house can be rented with only the three bedrooms, or as a five-bedroom accommodation, additionally encompassing the two-bedroom ground-level garden floor. Large common areas abound, indoor and outdoors seamlessly merge throughout, relaxing hammocks and outdoor showers invite guests to connect to the treetops, and full kitchens offer self-catering or private chef hire options. Most spectacularly, a impressive 12-person rooftop dining table looks out onto views of endless jungle. At the heart of the Tulum Treehouse is a core ethos of community, to live in symbiotically with the surrounding environment, and to educate guests on this fine balance. With this mindset, the Treehouse relies on a full solar setup with a back-up generator, as well as a two-pronged water treatment and irrigation system to help preserve the fragile ecosystem that is the Tulum jungle and mangrove area.Taken as a whole, this haven is a place to change the pace of life, to reset, to create space, nurture silence, and reconnect. Sea Cucumbers and Sustainable Tourism

Koh Samui is, without doubt, an inspirational place, so much so that it was while kayaking off the island’s stunning coast in 2012 that long-time resident Finn Hyttel became focused on global sustainability and this was when GoGreen Portals Group came into being. The company provides a platform to support startup businesses that are 100% committed to global sustainability through the creation of sustainable tourism destinations, landbased aquaculture innovation, conservation, investment, marketing and education in Southeast Asia. Finn, who is a Danish native, then established the GoGreen Credits Impact Fund (GCIF) which is dedicated to making positive environmental change through impact investment. The fund will assist commercial portfolio companies based in Southeast Asia get off the ground in the areas of sustainable tourism, sustainable aquaculture, aquaculture feed, sea and ocean sustainability, sustainable aquaponics, green tech, green entrepreneurs, sustainable land and property developments. Clean seas and healthy coral reefs that support abundant marine life are the foundations for sustainable tourism destinations and livelihoods for the enjoyment of all. Putting sustainable food in the hotels, resorts, restaurants and supermarkets – and on the plates of the poor in the local communities throughout Southeast Asia makes social, economic and environmental sense. The GoGreen Credits Marine Life & Coral Reef Conservation Foundation are under incorporation by GoGreen Portals Group. With its vision; Seas and Coral Reefs – Fit for Life, the foundation will establish projects that support, protect and help restore healthy marine ecosystems, creating sustainable tourism destinations and inspiring positive change and action for the survival of the seas and oceans, marine life and communities who depend on them. Finn Hyttel, GoGreen Portals Group Founder & CEO & Managing Partner and Publisher Finn Hyttel grew up with a love of the sea and sailboats in his native Denmark. However, he did not end up working at sea and instead spent over 30 years running his tech and property development companies. He has many years of international business development experience working with governments and multinational corporations, and has been based on Thailand’s second largest island, Koh Samui, for twelfth years, where he still resides. 64

“Individuals, businesses and organizations need to change their ideas about how environmental good is only achieved at the expense of commercial interests. It is simply not true and is an outmoded and dangerous philosophy. Impact funding is about embracing people, profits and the planet, creating social, economic and environmental change for the better. Without sustainable tourism, Thailand will lose its most precious assets, livelihoods will suffer and business potential in some parts of the country will wane,” Finn explains. Sea Cucumber Super Hatchery Fast-forward five years to 2017, and Koh Samui is set to become a hub for sustainable seafood thanks to the GoGreen Portals Group (GGP), GCIF, Finn and the GGP team and a team of aquaculture world experts.A portfolio company of the GCIF is AquaBlue Group which is headed by Carl-Peter Pesch, CEO and Dr. Georgina Robinson, Research and Development Director. AquaBlue is bringing innovation and impact business to the island and Surat Thani with a land-based sea cucumber super hatchery which will produce sustainable sea cucumbers for commercial value while protecting Thailand’s seas and oceans through a conservation drive that will seek to protect sea cucumbers, some species of which are officially classed as endangered by IUCN. Dr. Georgina Robinson illustrates the importance of protecting the sea cucumber, “Sea cucumbers are critical to the effective functioning of marine ecosystems. They are large-scale bioturbators that increase oxygen penetration to marine sediments via their feeding and burying movements and this is critical to maintaining healthy and diverse ecosystems. A critical link in the ecological chain has been lost due to their over-exploitation. However, by introducing sea cucumber farming and aiding the restoration of wild stocks, these ecological changes can be reversed.” The sustainable land-based super hatchery is being set up using former shrimp ponds on the mainland of Surat Thani province, and the intention is for these farms to be rolled out to other parts of Thailand and Southeast Asia. An Asian Superfood Sea cucumbers may not look particularly appetizing but they are considered a gourmet food in some parts of Southeast Asia, and AquaBlue will focus on providing dried sea cucumbers to the mainland Chinese market. A nutritious Asian superfood, sea cucumbers are low in fat and cholesterol while being high in

livingculture protein and rich in vitamins and minerals. Not only that, but these so-called ‘Ginseng of the Sea,’ are reputed for their healing properties in Traditional Chinese Medicine and are used as an anti-inflammatory. Research into their anti-aging and anti-cancer potential is ongoing while as a culinary delicacy, the sea cucumber is an energy booster that is a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc.

Thailand’s Coral Reefs at Risk While Phuket may be the jewel in the Andaman, Samui is, without doubt, a priceless gem in the Gulf of Thailand. However, some of Thailand’s beautiful beaches are at risk of losing their natural appeal. “Globally, we are experiencing an unprecedented coral bleaching incident and Thailand is no exception. Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation recently published a survey that reported incidents of coral bleaching on 80% of reefs in some areas. This has led to some marine parks and islands being closed in the country. Businesses who rely on tourism inThailand need to embrace the fact that it is in their interest to look after these marine landscapes,” explains Finn. Of course, it is in the interests of all of locals, expats and visitors to Thailand to look at how their actions could be harming these natural wonders of the world and consider what they can do individually and collectively to create a positive impact.

Sustainable Tourism As Finn passionately points out, protecting places like Samui is really about promoting sustainable tourism, and with 1 out of 11 jobs linked to tourism worldwide, local issues are a global concern. Finn states, “We’ve met tourists who’ve come to Thai-land, fallen in love with Samui and felt moved enough to join us and do ‘something,’ such as Elizabeth Howe who is a Detective Constable in England and is now a GCIF Ambassador. We’ve also found that in the US, there is a growing understanding of not just the value of protecting tourist destinations and instilling sustainable business practices but also in the rewards of impact investing. It’s a big world but in our little corner of Samui what we are trying to achieve is resonating across the world.”

Profits for the Planet and the People One way of embracing harsh environmental possibilities is to promote sustainable tourism and responsible business practices through impact investments. This type of funding is fast gaining traction as old-world views that doing good comes at a price fade away or that non-profit initiatives are enough. Finn highlights how positive environmental change that will benefit us all can be achieved, “Green business or investing in sustainability projects does not have to be at the expense of profits. On the contrary, it is through supporting entrepreneurs in getting sustainability ideas off the ground that we can reap the rewards both financially and environmentally. AquaBlue will benefit Samui and Surat Thani and other parts of Thailand by stimulating business, providing local income, education and helping fund marine ecosystem conservation projects in Thailand.” AquaBlue was also a part of the GoGreen Incubation Center, which is an entrepreneur and SME center within the GoGreen Portals Group, that aims to help start-ups in lots of different ways, whether they are part of the GCIF fund or not. Green Ambassadors It seems Finn and the AquaBlue team are not alone in their vision of modern green business thinking. A raft of GCIF Ambassadors from Thailand, the Philippines, Europe, Australia, the US, the Middle East and South Africa are setting sail to spread the eco message far and wide. Our Thailand-based and international ambassadors are raising the profile of the GCIF by sharing our vision far and wide to attract global attention and support.

One resort that ‘flies the flag’ for sustainable tourism and supports the GoGreen Portals’ vision and mission is the famed Eco-resort, Tongsai Bay, located on the island of Koh Samui. Owners Gob and his wife Goya Hoontrakul have transformed this resort on close to 29 acres of land into an award-winning example of how hospitality can be sustainable and holistically environmentally healthy. Gob and Goya are proud of the fact that Tongsai is now greener than when it first opened. This dramatic transformation can be seen if you compare Google Earth images from 1987 to 2017. Goya has contributed by planting more trees to provide natural shade and make the ground cooler, and the resort offers a safe haven for many animals and more than 60 species of birds. The couple supports the move by Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to close some of the marine parks and islands and comment, “I say it’s good for nature. Give it 4 to 6 months rest. They [The Department of National Parks,Wildlife and Plant Conservation] should do this consistently and should have done it a long time ago.” Gob and Goya define sustainable tourism as, “Tourism that respects nature. Often it starts with everyday life. If you respect nature and if you value nature any efforts will come naturally.” Indeed, heading to the beach to watch a sunrise or a sunset over Samui is enough to inspire anyone to take stock and realize just how valuable the planet’s riches are and to become an ambassador of positive, impactful change.

Koh Samui based ambassadors include Carlo Trapp, General Manager of the Boat Lagoon Resort and Terry Bouris, General Manager of Island Info Koh Samui. In other parts of Thailand, GCIF have the support of Khun Benjawan Wichaidid, Managing Director, Andaman Co. Ltd & Boat Lagoon Marina in Phuket, Kristian Olsen, General Manager of Ten Thai Estate Network Krapi and Crispin JG Paton-Smith, publisher and editor of One Coast Magazine. Mohammad Karaan, Professor & Executive Chairman,Terra San Group in Cape Town, South Africa is also a GCIF ambassador. Other international ambassadors include; Mark Jamplis, Owner

UAE’s marvelous jewelry brand By Nagmani

IN

the world of fine jewelry, the UAE is also not far behind and showing its mettle. Most importantly, it seems to be drawing in thousands of jewelry enthusiasts from all over the world. This isn’t without reason if you really look at the magnificent designs being created by the Dubai -based Gafla-The Arabian Jeweler, founded by three Emiratis Abdulla BelJafla (creative director), Hamad Bin Shaiban (managing director) and Bushra Bint Darwish (designer) six years ago. Even though it’s quite a recent phenomenon, it was something long-awaited. They embarked on this journey because they wanted to create objects that one day will be heirlooms passed from one generation to the next. It all fell in place for them thanks to the transformative power of drawing that later changed into reality they had visualized for themselves. 66

Starting with Bushra first, she had taken many courses throughout the years. Basically, she started off studying diamonds and gemstones. But it was in 2015 that she enrolled in a 3-month course of jewelry design at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in London. “It’s a technical and delicate task that involves a lot of precise and accurate measurements with the help of which these elegant pieces of jewelry are totally made possible,” she said. The growing popularity of Gafla jewelry is very much tied with the fulfillment of a promise that, it says, is at the core of its foundation right from the start. “The focus of our brand is to take the clients on a journey throughout the past. When we conduct private viewings, we tell our clients the story of each of our pieces, the historic inspiration behind them and how we transformed that inspirational factor into a unique design for women to wear blissfully,” she said. “The name “Gafla” literally means caravan in Arabic, which undoubtedly has greater influence on our brand ethos.”

The team’s overall inspiration, Hamad explains, mainly comes from the unforgettable journeys of nomadic traders who traveled from the Gulf to different cities and countries sourcing food, textile jewelry and many other materials that this region heavily depended on. “Growing up in Al Ain culture and heritage has always been an important aspect of our daily life. Both my grandmothers had and still have immense clout on my knowledge about the history of jewelry, food, traditional garments and a lot of other things. These elements can be described as the essence of our designs,” he said. Coming back to women’s love for jewelry, Abdulla explained, “They’re looking for simple yet statement pieces they can express their style with. And we hope our designs match their expectations.” Developed in their backyard, Bushra believes that their jewelry is designed to fit anyone and everyone around the world. “We’ve clients from Europe, Asia, and Africa and of course the Middle East,” she said. Middle Eastem women’s appetite for jewelry This is something Bushra wants to bring before the entire world.Women in the Middle East have a spectacular taste for jewelry. In this region, the importance of gold is shown throughout their history; the heavier the piece is,

the more valuable it would be. “In the Middle East, we women love to see gold particularly yellow gold. Looking through my mother’s jewelry that she bought in the ‘80s and the ‘90s, I noticed that most of the beautiful items were yellow gold with diamonds and emeralds. Compared to that period, today’s Middle Eastern women prefer modern pieces that are practical with different mixes of gold and collections that have something to convey,” she said. And Abdulla also contends that there are no differences between Arab women and their Western counterparts in terms of what types of jewelry they grab for themselves. “I believe every lady chooses the type of jewelry that gives a new lease of life to her style and personality,” he said. Sourcing materials from different places For this purpose, they use only the finest diamonds, gemstones and gold. “Since Abdulla and I are certified gemologists, we handpick all the stones by ourselves to make sure only the best quality comes our way. We source our materials from all over the world. We get our diamonds from Belgium, India and other countries. Not only that, our gemstones come from different continents too,” Bushra said. Awesome collections Their “Bahar” collection is the most popular creation to date. Bahar translates to ‘sea’ in English so this collection uses organic gemstones such as pearls and corals. Pearls are a big part of the history in the Gulf. “Our ancestors used to dive for pearls as a source of employment and during off—seasons they would travel to countries like Sri Lanka to find pearls. We created fresh water pearl tassels in rose gold and yellow gold then expanded the fine jewelry collection by introducing a white gold line with red corals,” Bushra said. These pieces became so popular in the market that they had to create a high jewelry line, which was exhibited during Dubai Design Week 2016, using handpicked akoya and south sea pearls; each piece was inspired by an element from the sea. The trio’s stunning artistry has once again been proven by their “Merwad” collection. Merwad in Arabic means the perfume wand which Arab women often use when it comes to applying mesmerizing scents. The shape of the rare gold bottle is inspired by the sensual movement of smoke that gets released from burning Oud wood, as well as the gentle ripples created by the drops of essential oils stored inside. “With it, we’ve reinforced our Emirati custom in the form of a masterpiece,” Abdulla said.

With the same degree of passion and innovation, they are about to launch another exciting collection very soon. Titled “Baraag” Collection which is inspired by the traditional Arabic gold sheds light on how the pieces available in the market today are very poorly designed. “We took the idea and modernized the entire thing by recreating the shapes and structures giving it a more symmetric and contemporary look,” Hamad said. As the brand moves closer to becoming a global sensation in the years ahead, it’s very important for Hamad to take part in high-profile exhibitions to build a stronger client base, create awareness and to offer the Gafla experience to their existing and potential clients. “We’re focused on the expansion and growth of Gafla, working on our new office as well as adding beautiful new designs to our line,” Abdulla said.“To capture such moments of beauty, I always look up to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid as a father, leader and beyond all a very creative artist whose words are a constant inspirations to us.” www.gaflajewellery.com

Preciously

Paris

A new breed of high-end clutches to suit your everyday rock ‘n’ roll style! By Nagmani

fashioninterview The world of luxe sophistication tends to exist on a non-stop flow of creative ideas. After all, this is what makes life absolute fun, exciting and rewarding. And the one luxury accessories item where it’s most applied is a handbag item—something that a woman can’t live without, thus experiencing a magical turnaround in its design aesthetic. So, the designer responsible for making plush clutch bags embroidered with the logos of various countries’ currencies and other vibrant and cheeky art forms is a Paris-based luxury clutch designer Carole Tessier whose eponymous label Preciously Paris seems to have taken everybody by surprise. Tessier’s first stint happened to be working as an interior designer because she had always been passionate about digging into the artisanal practices in France, leading her to study design and decoration at Académie Charpentier in Paris. Now looking to put her interior design skills into practice, she joined Rémi Tessier’s (one of the world’s most influential interior designers today and now her husband) design agency. “I teamed up with Jean François Lesage to embroider Rémi Tessier’s furniture collection. This incredible art of embroidery and handmade knowledge fascinated me most. I just fell in love with it,” she says. Since she wanted to wear it herself, she decided to experiment with her vintage jeans first; adorning them with crystals, radiant threads and semi-precious stones.

it. Rather she was looking for something grand to get involved with. That’s how the idea of designing clutches dawned on her as she puts it this way, “You reveal yourself through your handbags/clutches.You may be considered a serious, classic, funny, luxurious, or original woman. This is the ultimate fashion accessory for a woman.” All her creations are handmade, which she believes, is a rare thing to find out in today’s world. Therefore, things that make Tessier’s designed clutches unique enough to stand out are primarily her use of traditional embroidery techniques with a funny and arty spirit. “This lively mix makes Preciously Paris very special,” she says. However, designing such exquisite bags needs a lot of ingenuity, which comes easy to her. Tessier’s inspiration for all this big stuff essentially comes from her travels and the contemporary art exhibitions she keeps visiting. “I designed clutches with different countries’ bank notes carved into them in order to relive that moment when I first traveled to those amazing places,” she says. Her clutches are symbolic of luxury fabrics that go into the making of them. “I use Japanese denim, satin and silk velvet. I also collaborate with Toyen Sellers to develop handmade fabrics exclusively for my product line,” she says. “When it comes to collecting rock crystals, I look nowhere but the famous Goossens company in Paris.”

“I was wearing them during Art Basel Miami Beach. Ask me not what happened afterward! People liked my jeans so much so that I started getting personal orders to customize their denim collections,” she says. Although this business model had the potential to grow, Tessier’s heart and soul wasn’t allowing her to get into

Pepsi colors are Tessier’s favorites and she enjoys matching them with high heel shoes to complement her overall look on any given day. “If need be, you can contrast your style with a vintage denim jeans,” she says. “I’m usually fond of sexy, cool and feminine style.” Every collection of hers is aimed at telling some sort of fascinating story that women out there could relate to forever. “I always imagine for which kind of event and in which party I would like to wear my next collection,” Tessier says.

Her precious creations serve to uplift the lifestyle of jet-set women who love handmade products as well as appreciate the quality craft. “They are someone who comes across as having an excellent taste of art. But I don’t have any muses as such. I simply love sexy and chic women, and they are the ones who inspire me,” she says. It’s not unsurprising that celebs like Beyoncé, Natalia Vodianova, Lauren Santo Domingo, founder of Moda Operandi and famous women bloggers have been spotted carrying Tessier’s clutches. “They enjoy the fun spirit mixed with luxury materials and above all the very Parisian handmade style,” she says. “I feel blessed that they like my designs. I’d love that Amal Clooney soon fall in love with my clutches.” Tessier’s next collection which will be on handmade fabrics is called “It’s Freezing”.The title does imply to a degree that it’s surely bound to turn heads. As for adding in new things or features to her brand,Tessier definitely has one in mind at the moment. “I will also devote my time to developing belt collections to match the clutches and I’m hopeful it will certainly complement each other in a nice way. I can’t wait for it to happen,” she says.

In 2016, Jane Devonshire won the hearts of millions of viewers with her enthusiasm for cooking and life. A mother of four and self-trained in her home kitchen, Jane Devonshire has remained true to her cooking roots despite her fame and recent cooking adventure with acclaimed UK chefs.

Jane

Devonshire The Winner of MasterChef UK 2016

lifestyledine Fans hail her recipes for being everyday-friendly, simple and delicious. In other words, very ‘Jane-esque’. Moreover, she is passionate about cooking gluten-free dishes that are tasty and healthy. This is precisely the vibe that she concocted for the three-course dinner menu that One Coast Magazine was invited to. As part of her quest to bridge her own style with Thai flavours, Jane Devonshire has designed three dining menus especially for Samujana’s guests. Jane kindly took the time out of the kitchen to chat to us about her visit to Koh Samui. What is your favourite Thai dish that you’ve tried while visiting Thailand? “I really love the spicy salads and the freshness; it’s something different to what we have at home. I am becoming addicted to those to be honest”. If you need to cook this dish back home in the UK, what would be some of your cooking tips? i.e. Adapting ingredients and tastes, where to shop for ingredients, key cooking techniques? “I would shop mostly online, especially for the specialty ingredients. I live in Hampshire; if you live in London, there are Asian supermarkets at hand, but in my village, there are not! The one ingredient I struggle to find in the UK is green papaya, so I need to find an alternative. I shred peeled broccoli stalks instead, and use different vegetables such as Kohlrabi.” Can you share with us a bit about your visit to Thailand? Some memorable experiences? Sights, tastes, and stays? “We’ve not ventured far yet, but walking into this villa here at Samujana and seeing the view, we honestly thought we were in the hotel reception we had no idea that this was our villa, a complete surreal moment.” We heard you designed 3 special menus for Samujana during your stay there. Can you tell us a bit about the menus and their inspirations? “I tried to keep the menu items simple so the team here can find the ingredients with ease. The flavours are quintessentially local, but with a European twist.”

How has life been treating you after Master Chef and what have you been up to recently? “It’s amazing, perception is that I am going to open a restaurant and I do not want to do that. I have worked with many top chefs, collaborated on pop ups and gone into some amazing kitchens. I do much corporate work, cookery schools, and create and publish recipes in magazines. I have enjoyed regular slots for BBC South today and been on ‘Loose Women’ (a chat show in the UK), done loads of radio. To be honest, I have taken part in an eclectic mix of different things; it’s fun, next week I am judging a cheese tasting and soon the Good Housekeeping taste awards. And, of course, I publish my book next year.” We’re a fan of gluten-free diet, and your gluten-free cookbook is due out soon. How would you recommend keeping a healthy and simple gluten-free diet on a daily basis? “You stick to meat and two veg, the way our mums cook is in the main part gluten free. Thailand is easy with access to fresh veg and rice noodles, but at home keep it sensible, no reason in day-to-day diet to have gluten, my son is celiac and it is a medical necessity and I did not want him to eat separately. Also, gluten free baking can be delicious, I have just done a gluten-free scone for breast cancer care, and they were so light and fluffy.” What is your own personal comfort food and why? “Shepherd’s pie, because my mum makes the best one! Served with loads of fresh veg from my dad’s garden, cabbage and baby carrots.” You work with charities dedicated to cancer patients and survivors, as you yourself have battled this disease and survived! Do you have any words of inspiration and encouragement to share? “You have to fight; everyone chooses to do it in their own way. You do need to have a positive mental attitude when you have cancer. We all see the inspirational people running a marathon after seven chemotherapy treatments, but most people are not like that. Best thing to do is to not judge anyone, just sit and listen. It brought me to the floor, so ask for help, counselling, treatment, and get your family to fight to get you that help.” You are very honest about your life as a mom and now as a celebrity chef. How do you keep a good work-life balance? Are you enjoying life in the limelight? “I do love it. I have two children who also love the cameras and the other two don’t, so I must respect what they want. Children have a wonderful way of bringing you back down to earth so I don’t think I will be getting too big for my boots. With the many events

and engagements, I juggle my jobs; our youngest is only 15 so hubby takes care. I have turned down jobs because of family commitments. They family come first.” What has been the MOST amazing experience or memory since your winning Master Chef? “There are so many, meeting all these food heroes, working with some celebrity chefs, here, look being able to come here and be taken around the food markets and seeing things – FROGS! I immerse myself in food, it is a privilege.” What are your upcoming plans? “The launch of the book is really exciting and I am really busy before Christmas with food festivals, presenting work, festive menus. Gluten free, good housekeeping awards, cheese tasting awards, really busy.”

Special needs School Samui Proudly Opens New School Building

Samui Learning Centre for Children with Special Needs was founded in 2009, Samui Learning Centre for Special Needs in association with The Autistic Thai Foundations Suratthani Province Branch. After a couple of years of hard work and many worthy donations from the Samui Rotary Club (ROCKS), local businesses and individuals including the land 1 Rai which was kindly donated by Khun Ngen Watchara the Special Needs School Samui has proudly opened its new school building. The new building now means the school can comfortably support 20 to 50 children. Now the school has around 15 children which are around 70% Thai and 30% foreigners. The School now with its new building and beautiful landscaped gardens for the children to play takes 4 special needs children to one teacher so the groups stay small and intimate. This helps with getting the correct treatment and development for every child and with this success of the child’s development means many are at some stage able to integrate back into a normal school and society. 80

ecohelping hands The Centre’s Origin. Samui Learning Centre for Special needs was founded in 2009 by its current chairman, Mrs. Dalin Ruangaisoon who was born and raised on Koh Samui. Dalin has a family of three children, two of whom have been diagnosed with slow learning disorders and Autism. Her children were not accepted at conventional educational schools. However, she nevertheless tried her best to ensure that they received the care and support necessary for their development and to prevent further regression. In the beginning, having to travel to Saranrom Hospital (Surat Thani) and as far as Bangkok, not an easy task with disabled children. It was at this point Dalin became inspired to establish a learning centre for children with special needs like her own on Samui. Early in 2009 Dalin met local teachers Mrs. Emma Rose and Khun Pirat of the Samui Centre of Learning in Ban Lamai who introduced her to Mr. Choosak Chantayanon, the Chairman of the Autistic Thai Foundation of Thailand. On 4th June 2009 they met up with the head of the Koh Samui Municipality in the presence of parents who have children with special needs, along with doctors from Koh Samui Hospital with the objective of creating a plan to assist disabled children on Koh Samui. As a result, Dalin was supported to start a class at The Samui Learning Centre in Lamai. The centre was greatly supported from various local sources to cover space rental, teacher’s salary, educational supplies, food, water and electricity costs. In addition, came some financial support from The Autistic Thai Foundation Thailand. She was then finally able to establish The Samui Learning Centre for Special Needs. This entity served the community in Lamai until a series of problems occurred. Firstly Mrs. Emma Rose, a mainstay within the program, had suddenly to return to the UK, this was followed by damage to the school due to repeated floods and a general decrease

in financial support. Fortunately, subsequent support arose from “The Rainbow Room” community in Bangkok whereby a fundraising event was held to help the centre’s financial needs. This event included the showing of a film, comparing the love and sharing within a normal family and that of a family with Autistic children. It was a great success, raising 160.000 Baht enabling the school to relocate to their current home in “MAYABURI”, Bangrak, Koh Samui. A location more conveniently located for both the children and the community where they have now proudly opened the new building improving the school facilities for teachers and child alike. Aims and Objectives. Purpose. To establish a positive and supportive environment for families with special needs children. To find an appropriate way to develop each child’s individual potential. To create a learning environment that encourages the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of each child. Focus. The Special Needs School Samui aims to assist special needs children on the island and encourage their personal development from younger schooling to life careers, regardless of their parental finances. To help the children in developing their cognitive abilities and enable them to continue through mainstream education. Ensure that each child can exist happily with others and is not a burden to family and community. The school is open Monday - Friday from 8.30 to 15.00 noon weekends - no school term. Mr. Oriol Montal, General Manager of JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa welcomed the guests of honor and participants in this early Sunday morning. The opening ceremony presided by Mr. Noraphat Plodthong, Phuket Governor alongside with Phuket Vice Governor Snith Sriwihok, Phuket Vice Governor Thawornwat Kongkaew and Khun Uthit Limsakul, Deputy Director of The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket office at Phuket Gateway. Before the race kicked off, Phuket Governor requested the participants to rise to observe 2 minutes of silence in loving memory of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The atmosphere was incredible with local people taking part to run for fitness and conservation of sea turtles together. The mini marathon 10.2K runners made a history once again by running across the iconic Phuket, Sarasin and Thao Thep Kasattri Bridge to Phang Nga province and back, it was the second year that we used this beautiful routing for the annual Mai Khao Marine Turtle Fun Run and Mini Marathon. 82

“Healthy people make for a healthy community,” I am delighted to be part of this amazing event, huge thanks also goes to the foundation owners the Minor group, sponsors, partners and hardworking volunteers, this event would not be possible without them” said, Mr. Oriol Montal, General Manager of JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa. The annual Turtle Fun Run and Mini Marathon – while also aiming to encourage in people a healthy lifestyle – is a collaborative effort by the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation and JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa to raise funds and awareness of the conservation work done by the Phuket Marine Biological Center and its “The Injured Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Program” to rescue, rehabilitate and release (recovered) injured turtles, dolphins, whales and dugongs. Phuket’s endangered sea turtles – which use Mai Khao Beach as a nesting ground – are facing multiple threats, their numbers having severely depleted in recent years. Commercial fishing kills thousands of them every year, while many more die from eating or becoming trapped in plastic debris littering the ocean.

just out BLADERUNNER 2049

Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Jared Leto In 1982 Blade Runner was released. Even though the movie did not do well with either audiences or critics when it first came out, it has since grown and become an important piece of culture and cinema. Now 30 years later we have Blade Runner 2049, the sequel produced by Ridley Scott. Blade Runner 2049 moves at a quite a slow pace (and, at two hours and 44 minutes, is a full 47 minutes longer than the first one).

just out AMERICAN MADE Tom Cruise, Domnhall Gleeson While we all await the release of the recently announced Top Gun sequel, Tom Cruise's latest of slice Hollywood entertainment American Made, allows us all to see what it's like when Maverick becomes a little naughty in his retirement from flying fighter jets. American Made is a seriously fun examination of the true life story of American Airlines pilot Barry Seal, who gave up his life as an everyday pilot to

At the same time, Blade Runner 2049 although slow is a brilliant mystery, a chain of stunning visuals, complemented by a powerful musical backdrop and all alongside some of the most top-notch visual effects work I have ever seen on a movie. 30 years after the events of Blade Runner, two significant things have happened: the more wealthy members of the human race have begun to move themselves off a clearly dying Earth, leaving the rest of the human race behind to muddle through a world that seems on the brink of collapse. The Police have reactivated its blade runner program, commanded by Lieutenant Joshi (Robin Wright). Her top agent is K (Ryan Gosling), who as we meet him is on a routine mission to “retire” a fugitive, but it doesn’t take very long for K to discover a series of clues that lead him to uncover secrets - a mystery that involves an unidentified corpse and a missing child.

Gosling plays the main character well and is aided by a solid supporting cast that includes Dave Bautista and Jared Leto in small roles. Leto doesn’t have a lot of screen time but makes the most of it as the eccentric, visionary Wallace. And then there’s Ford reprising his role from the first film as Deckard. Deckard is older, wiser and a changed man and I wont go into much more than that as I don’t want to ruin the mystery.

not only become a CIA recruited pilot delivering messages, guns and various other treats to South American contacts, but a drug runner for the Pablo Escobar Columbian drug trade, which makes for a wild ride that would be unbelievable were it not in fact based on truth.

At 60 years of age you'd be right thinking it's about time that Cruise take a seat back and enjoy a quiet time in his career but the leading man is having a blast here bringing Seal to life.

The director and his leading man are uninterested in giving a dry history lesson of Seal's exploits, as American Made sees the two Hollywood heavy hitters instead turn their interest towards delivering a over the top examination of these events. Cruise seems to be having the most fun he has had in years with American Made easily becoming one of the year's most fun rides.

Blade Runner 2049 does meet and even exceed expectations in many ways. The team have created perhaps the most gorgeous movie of 2017. Blade Runner 2049 is a real science fiction film and is definitely worth seeing on the biggest screen possible!!

The movie also brings out Cruise's talents for comedy and when mixed with his easy going nature, Seal offers Cruise one of his best and most interesting roles in his career. With Cruise giving a breathtaking taking amount of energy the role, American Made is a pure piece of entertainment and the running time just flies by.

just out Kingsman

The Golden Circle : Taron Edgerton, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry Prior to the release of 2015’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, the spy genre was not in the best place . We seemed to have endured Daniel Craig brooding and Jason Bourne running around for many years Hence the fresh air brought about by Kingsman, which featured Colin Firth in large glasses and Sean Connery suits, all while channeling the campiest of 007 adventures. The result was the wildest spy film in ages, one that’s best described as a camp slaughter fest. It also paved the way for Kingsman: The Golden Circle, a sequel that arrives two years later and into a world where the Cold War is also on the rebound.

just out FLATLINERS

Ellen Page , Diego Luna Ok so this is remake of the 1990's Flatliners which is a sci-fi psychological horror, directed by Joel Schumacher and boasting an all-star cast. In the original, Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, and William Baldwin star as medical students who conduct experiments on themselves in the hope of proving that there is life after death. In the 2017 version, it's Ellen Page, Diego Luna, and a host of unknowns in the lead roles. What is confusing is the trailers led us to believe it was a sequel but it's not it is a pointless remake of the same premise.

Matthew Vaughn’s responded by doubling down on the camp, the violence and the gadgets. Thus here is a bigger and sillier movie. With so much madness stuffed into its 141-minute running time, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a little manic itself. This just means the viewer will be manic itself by the end. Set about one year after the events of the original film, The Golden Circle picks up with Eggsy (Taron Egerton) having settled perfectly into his role at the posh tailor shop in Mayfair. By day he battles cyborg enhanced henchmen, and by night he lets his hair down in his East London baseball cap while living with the returning Swedish Princess Tilde (Hanna Alström). Merlin (Mark Strong) is still there as Eggsy’s Q-like sidekick, and Roxy/Agent Lancelot (Sophie Cookson) watches his back. But then everything goes to hell when most of the Kingsman facilities are wiped out by a new American enemy. Poppy (Julianne Moore) is an international drug dealer and is also not against cannibalism or utilizing her razor-toothed robotic attack dogs on disloyal employees.

The surviving Kingsman are forced to team with their American counterparts, the Statesman. Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, and Pedro Pascal all get to ham it up in cowboy hats. Together, they’ll side with Eggsy and chase Poppy through German concerts, Italian Alps, and even her Cambodian lair .

So, in case you haven't seen the original, Courtney Holmes (Page) enlists her classmates to stop her heart and then bring her back to life monitoring and recording her brain activity. When Courtney's near death experience has positive effects for her, most of the others undergo the same procedure and discover a new lease on life. Unfortunately, each of them has personal demons, brings around particularly ugly side effects.

attempts to become a horror film, but it's very bad at it once it does. Even the supposedly jump scares don’t really make you jump.

But whether you've seen the older version or not, there's no getting away from how this 21st century reboot is nothing new.

Flatliners is a terrible remake that fails to update the original in any way. There is no reason for it to exist. Terrible, terrible, terrible

The characters are all dull and one – dimensional and the trouble is no -one is really rooting for these characters. Worse still, the film isn't scary. This version takes a little more time over the grounded sci-fi angle before it

Basically the filmmakers elect to more or less detonate the world they built in the first film, Even so it grants the movie and its filmmakers freedom to start from scratch, and once Eggsy and Merlin hit the road for Kentucky, The Golden Circle really comes into its own . In this vein, the Statesman are a wonderful inclusion, The Statesmen also give Eggsy the resources to pursue a third act that is positively demented and might even surpass the explosive climax of The Secret Service. As a whole, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a genrebending romp that has many on-point gags and action scenes that work to be anything less than entertaining

Ellen Page normally better than this sort of thing, and although she comes out of it the best the script really doesn't give the cast much to do. Apart from playing a prize douchebag the others get their scream queen set pieces.
