One can be forgiven for believing that stripes made their entrance in Spring 2013, however, lovers of fashion history will be quick to point out that they have been a part of our DNA for at least 150 years. Our love affair in its current form is with sincerest thanks to Mademoiselle Coco Chanel and her interpretation of the much loved Nautical and Breton. 2014 trends have refined the bold, thick set stripes seen last season to finer lines. Conveniently located in the heart of Pattaya, the Hilton is part of Thailand’s largest high-end beachfront, lifestyle, shopping and entertainment centers. Featuring impeccable design with an aesthetic that creates a sense of calm and space, the Hilton Pattaya boasts an outdoor infinity edge swimming pool set amidst landscaped gardens with sundecks and relaxation areas providing unobstructed panoramic ocean views, it is here vacationers are in heaven…..read a book as you sink into a poolside lounger and relax with a refreshing cocktail from Shore. Voted ‘Best Hotel Thailand’ by the International Hotel Awards 2013-2014, Hilton Hotels & Resorts collaborated with several design companies to create the beautiful Hilton Pattaya property. The companies were chosen because of their reputation globally and within Thailand, as brands who could set the stage for design and innovation. MAAR (Lead Architects) and S.O.D.A (façade) joined forces to create an ultra-modern and contemporary hotel that challenges traditional notions of hotel design while complementing the ambience of its beachside location. Department of Architecture Co Ltd, a Thai-based firm, was responsible for the hotel’s striking lobby, bars and restaurants while Bangkok-based August Design, created the innovatively-designed conference rooms, ballroom, guest rooms and Executive Lounge. The design of Hilton Pattaya is inspired by the sea and beaches surrounding the hotel. We wanted guests to experience the tranquility of the beach in the features of the hotel, such as the spectacular 635sqm Seaboard Ballroom that includes shimmering crystal chandeliers, designed to re-enact the gentle movement of beach breezes and the sea.

“In designing the lobby areas of the hotel, we wanted the replicate the feeling a person gets while standing in shallow water and looking up at the sky towards the light, with the sand and pebbles beneath their feet,” said Amata Luphaiboon, Principal, Department of Architecture Co Ltd. “Choosing a colour scheme we opted for soft, pale colours to reflect the neutral tones of sand, wood and pebbles. The aim was to replicate within the lobby the feeling of walking along the beach.” Hilton Hotels & Resorts is a stylish, forward thinking global leader in hospitality, and we wanted to showcase these brand qualities in Hilton Pattaya. Every surface, texture, color and shape within the property draws inspiration from the sea and beaches surrounding the hotel. Dine in the contemporary Pattaya restaurant, Edge. Edge offers indoor and outdoor terrace dining, stunning views of Pattaya Bay and an abundance of natural light. Sample delicious cuisine in Flare, where a magnificent wall of exquisite wines provides a distinguished setting and combines traditional tastes of rural Thai kitchens with fine ingredients from around the world. Savor tapas style snacks and Caribbean cocktails at Drift or unwind with unique rooftop views at trendy champagne bar and restaurant, Horizon. The spacious and contemporary one-bedroom suites offer floor-toceiling windows and the latest in-room technology. For the perfect end to your day, enjoy a relaxing floral bath on the unique outdoor living zone on the extended private balcony in selected rooms and suites. Whatever you do, enjoy this hotel not only for its incredible amenities but for its forward thinking design and wonderous aesthetic beauty. www3.hilton.com

THE NEW-GENERATION MINI HAS ARRIVED. DESIGNED TO BE BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER, THE NEW MINI CONTINUES TO BE THE LEADING ORIGINAL PREMIUM SMALL CAR. The evolution of the new MINI’s design signals the more mature character of this new model, reflecting significant optimisation in aspects such as space, safety, materials and finish quality as well as driving dynamics and ride comfort. “The new MINI offers significant advancements in all areas relating to driving fun, quality and individual flair. The enhancement of product substance embodied in the new MINI comes directly from the BMW Group’s outstanding development expertise and takes on a more extensive form than ever before in the history of the brand,” said Mr Sethipong Anutarasoti, Corporate Affairs Director of BMW Group Asia. “Newly developed power units featuring MINI Twin Power Turbo Technology are also available. The new MINI Cooper now has a 3-cylinder petrol engine with a peak output of 136 hp, while the MINI Cooper S comes with a 4-cylinder petrol engine with 192 hp,” added Mr Anutarasoti.

New engines: MINI Twin Power Turbo Technology For the first time both 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder engines are introduced, all featuring MINI Twin Power Turbo Technology. The petrol engines include turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable camshaft control on the intake and exhaust side (double VANOS). In the engines of the MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper models there is also fully variable valve control in the form of VALVETRONIC, as patented by the BMW Group. For highly spirited power delivery, the new MINI Cooper S is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with a peak output of 192 hp which goes on stream between 4,700 and 6,000 rpm, delivering its maximum torque of 280 Nm from 1,250 to 4,750 rpm. Optimised suspension: Less weight, more go-kart feeling. The refinement of suspension technology in the new MINI keeps to the well-established design principle of the singlejoint spring strut axle at front along with a multilink rear axle that is unique within the competitive environment, as well as featuring extensive optimisation of all components in terms of material selection and geometry. All improvements are aimed at intensifying the experience of the agile MINI handling properties, commonly known as the go-kart feeling. The set-up of the wheel suspension, body mounting, vehicle suspension, damping, steering and brakes takes account of the increased level of engine power and the typical MINI concept consisting of front-wheel drive, transversely mounted engine at the front, low centre of gravity, short overhangs, wide track and a rigid, weight-optimised body structure.

Exterior: Bigger proportions, better agility and comfort. Cornering agility and ride comfort benefit from larger dimensions as do the amount of space available to occupants and the luggage compartment volume. The extended adjustment range of the front seats, a seat surface lengthened by 23mm and a perceptible increase in shoulder room provide more foot space and freedom of movement as well as optimised entry comfort for rear passengers. Luggage compartment volume has been increased by 51 litres to 211 litres. Other innovations include the Driving Assistant option. This comprises a camera-based cruise control and distance control function which automatically maintains a distance from the vehicle ahead, and the collision and pedestrian warning system with initial brake function. In addition to this, an automatic brake manoeuvre is triggered in the case of an imminent collision with a pedestrian or if there is a risk of a rear-end collision in urban traffic. A rear view camera and parking assistant are also optionally available for the new MINI. The video images supplied by the rear view camera underneath the tailgate handle are shown on the on-board computer in the central instrument as an aid when manoeuvring and reverse parking. www.mini.com.sg

Franky Zapata is the inventor of the Flyboard and owner of ZAPATA RACING products factory based in France. Franky built his reputation on a solid Jet Ski racing career that saw him and the factory achieve The RUN F1 WORLD CHAMPION title. Franky’s passion, knowledge, experience and devotion contributed greatly to be an innovator. He pushed his invention to the limits not only technically but also on the challenging sport aspect and this year has released the new and exciting Hoverboard by ZR. The Hoverboard is essentially a surf board attached to a PWC (Personal Watercraft) which gives the Hoverboard propulsion through air. The whole propulsion is routed through the primary nozzle that attached to rear of the board and routed through an 18 metre hose that follows behind the rider giving freedom to surf amongst the waves. Depending on the Jet-Ski power, the Hoverboard can reach highs of up to 5 meters and speeds of 40km/h!! The Hoverboard can be practiced by two people with one PWC driver and one board rider. However, it can also be practiced alone thanks to the Electronic Management Kit (EMK), connected to the PWC engine, allowing the user to maintain power through a handheld throttle control. The EMK is an optional extra and not included with the standard Hoverboard by ZR Kit. www.zapta-racing.com

The Sky’s the limit for young Canadian-born shoe designer Jerome C. Rousseau. Since the launch of his eponymous label in 2008, his designs have skyrocketed to A-list wardrobes and shoeracks across the globe from Hollywood’s hottest stars to every major runway, red carpet and high-fashion magazine you can think of. His bold designs and daring concepts, coupled with unparalleled artistry in each hand-crafted piece, gave him a roaring start and by 2010 he was awarded the prestigious “Who Is On Next” accessories prize by Vogue Italia. Since then it’s been a steady vertical slope of success and recognition for the label, adored by the likes of Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Scarlett Johansson, Kristen Stewart, Katie Holmes, Jessica Alba...etc...etc...really, the list goes on and on... One Coast were lucky to score an exclusive interview with Jerome himself and pick his brains about the realms of shoe design and what the future holds for the label.

KING OF THE HEEL Was fashion or shoe-design in particular always the path you intended to follow? I fell in love with shoes as a teenager, and it became apparent rather quickly that shoes were going to become what my life is about. There’s a fine line between fashion and design. I’m definitely more of a designer than a fashion person. I have a much greater passion for design than I have for fashion. They are both inseparable in my profession, however, shoes remain my biggest crush. It’s the only thing I ever studied and I’ve spent my entire life focusing on this. Beyond creativity and the technicalities of production, how much mechanical thought is required in shoe design? Compare the process to a structural architect. Footwear design is the most technical category within the fashion realm. A woman wears a dress or carries a handbag, but a shoe literally carries a woman. As a designer it’s important for me to strike the perfect balance between creativity, craftsmanship, balance and comfort. The secret to a great shoe construction is to carefully develop each component together to fit like a perfect puzzle. It starts with a perfectly fitted last, then build the heel, insole, outsole, upper etc. Everything needs to measure up to the millimetre. It’s a beautiful challenge to marry the technical aspects to the creativity. My collection is built in Italy where there is a long tradition of craftsmanship for each of these components. You’ve done your time alongside many big names in fashion, who has been the most influential in terms of personal growth and also entrepreneurship? The most I have learnt has been from working with technicians in Italy, as opposed to womenswear designers. I have collaborated over the years with some of the most skilled technicians who have taught me about my design work, how to communicate my ideas to factories and how to develop relationships with various important resources. I am not sure I would have been able to launch a solid and successful business the way I did without their mentoring for ten years prior.

What single experience has been the highlight of your career so far? This is a tough question! I have always been inspired by music for my work. In the six years since I launched my label I have had the chance to meet some of my favourite artists through my work, such as Elli Medeiros and Jody Watley. These have perhaps been some of the most beautiful and precious moments for me. In terms of the growth of my label, I did a shoe collaboration for the release of the film “Tron: Legacy and it was a real milestone for my brand. Another one would be getting a full page in Vogue Italia, shot by Ellen Von Unwerth. Oh and also getting Charlize Theron to wear my shoes!

Can you drop any hot gossip on future developments of the label? We have a fantastic film collaboration coming up but I can’t reveal many details at this stage. We also have great celebrities lined up to wear the label for the upcoming award season, but again I’ve got to keep this top secret until it happens. Are the rumours true that you were once a pop star? The rumours are true indeed. I was once a member of a London electropop group called Riviera F. These were influential years in my life, perhaps also the most fun I’ve had ever. We recorded a few songs with Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran: that would be a highlight of just about anyone’s life! I’m still a massive fan of Riviera F’s music, and obviously I’m still a Durannie. You must have achieved more dreams than most in such a short time. What’s currently at the top of your bucket list? I’d love to steer my label towards more growth, expanding on the international market and also launching new production categories such as handbags, sunglasses etc. I love most of the accessories categories and I’d love to develop my signature aesthetic into new products. Oh and I’d love to meet Cyndi Lauper. www.jeromecrousseau.com

HOUSE OF THE RISING A s h le y S ut t o n's l at e s t c r e at i o n brings the underground allure of the Shanghai speakeasy to Bangkok with the remarkable Maggie Choo’s words by Mairead Doohan-Langrish

Finding unique, sophisticated and worthwhile nightlife in the increasingly trendy Bangkok can be difficult. Although bars dripping with promise and potential are materializing constantly, sadly the reality can often be underwhelming. Thankfully, Maggie Choo’s stands out like a beacon amongst these lack-luster ‘it’ bars. Located under the Novotel Fenix on Silom Road you could be forgiven for missing the unremarkable front door... but then don’t all the best places deserve an unveiling? One Coast Magazine

Intrigue does not stop there however – upon entering you find yourself in a cozy, 1930’s influenced Cantonese restaurant. The intricate wooden umbrellas covering the ceiling are striking, the glossy bottle-green tiles ease you nostalgically back in time and the hint of spice coming from the kitchen is alluring. Impressive, but nothing yet is striking enough to justify Maggie Choo’s revered status in Bangkok’s metropolitan night-life. That is until you are led through an unassuming curtain hung along the back wall…
advised, as it’s all too easy to become engulfed by the velvety jazz notes whilst getting lost within the depths of your honeycomb infused bourbon.
Previously an underground bank vault, the bar, which can only be described now as a ‘hidden lair’, oozes understated, exotic charm and elegance. Plush leather sofas draped in velvet are artfully arranged beside antique wooden chests; art-deco tiling is juxtaposed with intimidating Queen Victoria stone busts. The walls are adorned with authentically vintage Shanghai art; intricately decorated mirrors and original brickwork, reminiscent of the speak-easy prohibition bars of the 1920’s and 30’s.
Maggie Choo’s is not Sutton’s first foray into the Bangkok nightlife scene. The Australian designer has begun to rewrite Bangkok’s night-life with a number of edgy, quirky and fanciful concepts, all of which are proving to be exceedingly successful. From the dark and punkish ‘Iron Fairies’; think bruised leather, smoky blues and moodily refined clientele, to the whimsical and almost childlike extravagance of the ‘Bookshop Bar’ – quite literally a window into Ashley’s daydreams; Sutton has a rare knack for creating eccentric designs that still manage to work as a functioning social house.
However, as impressive as the design features are, you might be tempted to overlook them…as the captivating cheongsam clad women dangling lazily from the ceiling swings tend to be quite eye-catching... There is a grown-up elegance at Maggie’s that is not as forthright in some of Ashley’s other creations, put simply the place radiates mystique and opulence. Within such a place, one can literally melt in to an era; embodying a colonial entrepreneur, a dissident opium indulger or a million other characters and eccentrics played out in 1930s Shanghai. Perhaps a warning should be
In other bars, the extravagance of the décor could be heavy handed, the distinctness - intimidating and the enforced ‘concept’ too try-hard, but somehow Ashley Sutton, the visionary behind it all, manages to bypass these pitfalls and Maggie’s only inspires a feeling of alternate reality – a place to truly lose yourself.
Maggie Choo’s follows in a similar vein – So arrive ready to be entertained, amazed and scandalized by Bangkok’s sexiest hotspot … www.facebook.com/maggiechoos Basement Novotel Fenix Silom 320, Silom Road 02 635 6055

Air Panas of Banjar - Bali
The sacred hot springs ‘Air Panas’ of Banjar are set in the midst of the Balinese jungle in a beautifully landscaped tropical garden, close to Lovina Beach and are testament of the unfaltering beauty of indonesia’s most beloved island. The sulphuric water is of volcanic origin and has an agreeable warm temperature of 37 degrees Celcius, ideal for people suffering from rheumatic diseases. The pools The hot spring water gushes from the mouths of eight stone carved naga (mythical, dragon-like creatures) into the oblong shaped upper pool. From the upper pool the water overflows from the mouths of five more nagas into the largest of the three pools, which is square shaped and situated at a lower level. Adjacent to these pools is the third and smallest one from which the water poors down via three 4 meter high spouts, giving you a strong, reviving massage. There is a small temple at the site where the water wells up from the ground, encased by a low, stone structure.

In the south of Krabi province in Klong Thom district (around 70km from town and near the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve), are nature’s own hot-tub jacuzzis, known as น ้ ำ ตกร ้ อน (nam tok rawn) in Thai. The water here comes from thermal springs, originating deep underground in volcanic chambers. Located in the jungle, this site features naturally hollowed-out ‘bathtubs’ in the smooth stone, filled to the brim with fresh running spring water at a pleasant 35-42C. After a soak, take a refreshing dip in the cool river below. The mineral salts contained in the hot spring water are said to ease a number of ailments, including rheumatism, sciatica and skin complaints. Day time or early evening is the best time to truly appreciate the breath-taking views of Samui's stunning coastline, but as dusk settles and the evening sky creeps in, a sparkling of firework displays can be enjoyed throughout the evening from Dr Frogs expansive indoor or outdoor dining terraces, as the many bars dotted along the shore set them off in celebration. Having opened its doors ten years ago, the restaurant has received many accolades for its relaxed approach to dining combined with its detailed approach to food. The menu lends itself to an array of traditional Italian food ranging from fresh home-made pastas, to ‘award-winning’ classic thin-crust pizza and an amazing selection of seafood - to more western fare of prime Australian beef and acclaimed New Zealand lamb, lobster, king prawns and even of course, frogs legs! Chef Massimo Mariani leads the culinary charge at Dr Frogs and having worked in Milan, Monte Carlo and Sardinia he brings with him an understanding of fine-dining and flavour combinations that alight the palate. Chef Massimo's menu travels the gamut of Italian favourites such as his mouth-watering mussels in garlic and white wine, button mushroom and cracked black pepper down to antipasti that clearly shows blending of his Italian roots with his new found home of Thailand with his Tortini di Granchi - crab cakes accompanied by a spicy mango salsa.

Dining experiences in Bangkok can often be too formal and follow the rigid rules of “classic” Western dining. Yet Thai people are used to eating at temple fairs, grazing at open markets and along busy streets, sharing everything in a relaxed, boisterous way. Opposite Mess Hall’s aim is to harness some of that energy and diversity. By focusing on local quality ingredients, the food at Opposite Mess Hall is simple, dynamic and unpretentious. A blend of flavors not fixed to a specific cuisine and with unexpected culinary twists. Expect vibrant culinary creativity paired with cutting-edge art and cultural performances. OMH’s drinks menu is carefully curated to complement the food. Using the same philosophy of keeping things simple but first-rate, the cocktail list is small and select, focusing on local and seasonal ingredients. www.oppositebangkok.com

All of those job titles, you must have a nightmare making business cards. How would you describe your career? It’s been a hindrance at times to be honest. When people casually ask me what I do i’m sometimes reluctant to engage the conversation because they end up regretting asking and I end up with a sore throat. I guess i’m a writer first and foremost, a literature graduate so that’s my academic background. Everything else is self-taught, but i’m probably most visible as a photographer. I’ve deveoped computer game concepts, written books, built brands and ran my own agency. I just love creating things at every level, from ideation to organisation to execution, plus I love nurturing good ideas into reality, projects and people i believe offer spiritual value. In a perfect world i’d work exclusively on passion projects and life would be solved. As for business cards, I don’t actually use them, I have a few that say “Imaginician” but nobody has any idea what that means, and I made up the word anyway. But in my mind that kind of sums it all up. So what’s your favourite creative discipline? I think I like and dislike everything equally, at different times. Being an all-rounder and a workaholic means I have the luxury of blending disciplines concurrently and it helps keep things fresh. If i get bored of writing copy, i’ll do some layouts or design a logo. If I lose patience with layouts i’ll go and snap some photos. I do love writing puns and wordplay, I love taking a beautiful photo and I do very much like aesthetics but if I had to pick one thing that gives me the most satisfaction (right now) I guess it would be graphic design because I take great comfort in geometry and when I create a design that falls perfectly on the eye, I can honestly say that it soothes my soul. Tell us more about your photography projects. I’ve been working as a professional photographer for ten years and in that time i’ve explored many different fields from years of luxury travel journalism, interiors and architecture, reportage and urban decay but I guess my biggest personal development was in portraiture. Over the years i’ve shot some inspirational figures such as Sting, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, Kenya Hara and Neville Brody, but gained most recognition from an art project called Girls. And Money. in Malaysia from 2010-2012. It was an edgy, raw and sensual female empowerment project that grew to be quite a cool brand. I launched a book in Brooklyn NYC, had many exhibitions and features in U.S, Europe and Asia and even extended the brand to named club nights in Malaysia and Singapore, alongside fashion and ar tist collaborations all over the world. It became something of a cultural icon, but like most projects, I outgrew it and moved on to taking photos of sunsets and fruitbo wls instead. Much more interesting.
So you’ve been in Southeast Asia for a while and now Koh Samui. How’s island life compared to the big smoke? Island life is both chilled and hectic at the same time. Sometimes it’s hectic because it’s so chilled. But I love Samui. People think coming from a big city background working on large commercial projects and having access to thriving arts and culture to a relatively small and quiet island must have its limitations or lack the opportunity to achieve great things - but that’s not true. I came to Samui after being in Mexico City consulting for a corporate ad agency heading a Pepsi consumer engagement campaign and I hated it - all it took was an email from a close friend telling me he was setting up his own restaurant on Samui and needed a logo. Finally a project I truly believed in. I booked my flight the next day. That restaurant was The Larder in Chaweng and I had the utmost pleasure designing the entire brand identity campaign, logos and such, writing witty menu names, shooting the food and interiors and with Chef Martin and Mixologist Damian’s passion and savvy, the concept came together perfectly and the restaurant was an instant hit. I wasn’t afforded that sense of reward working high in the adver tising food chain in any big city. Likewise for Beach Republic in Lamai, the coolest beach club on Samui - and my longest running client, to the point where i consider it home and family. Personal connections to your working life are imperative - in fact I think that one secret to my professional success is that there is no differentiation between life and work. Clients are friends and my work/life balance is a perfect synergy of passion, friendship and professionalism. Most creative professionals struggle to find the balance between being precious about their ‘ar t’ and being good with business. I think business is simply an artform more artists should practice. Any exciting developments in the pipeline? Absolutely. In fact the ultimate project has materialised, or more, been carefully crafted to plan, as i’m about to endeavour into fatherhood. Very exciting times indeed - to become a parent, a teacher, an ‘adult’, and pass on all the knowledge, wisdom and experience that life has given me thus far. For me I think it is the most profound milestone in anyone’s life - and as i’ve already achieved 99% of my bucket list - I feel blessed and grateful to be given this oppor tunity. Any parting wisdom to pass on? Do what you love, love what you do. Confucius said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” And slow down. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” ~Ferris Bueller Nuff said. facebook.com/the.imaginician

DESPERATELY SEEKING
Sa ma n t ha Bangkok’s Go-To-Go-Getter Samantha Gray-Proyruntong crams an hour of her impossibly busy day into 5 precious minutes. Read on and be exhausted...
You’re known as a bit of a socialite who makes things happen in and around Bangkok, give us a quick rundown of who and what Samantha does on a daily basis? I’m not one for following celebrity’s trends but indeed I’m a social media junkie and I’m not ashamed to admit it. As a freelance writer and blogger, what I enjoy is getting out and about in the thick of it, capturing experiences in a unique, nob ulls h*t style. What I find is a mixed reaction, those who are appalled and those enter tained or strangely fascinated. Because as an outspoken woman in Thailand, very often you’re considered uncouth, uneducated or a “party girl” if not modeled on the characters in soapies or TV commercials. What I like to encourage is individuality. I like giving exposure to littlek nown inspiring people and unfamiliar but awesome places I’ve visited. As far as being a socialite; I live on a budget, I rarely watch commercial television or shows, I read and write like a maniac. What would you say your true passion is the one thing that makes you get out of bed every day? My passion is saying “F*ck it”! I have built a bit of a foundation from it and without sounding crude, to me means having confidence to do what you love. Before moving to my mother’s native country (Thailand) I was going through some issues and it took a combination of a reckless lifestyle, failed ventures and “romances” to realize that the life you deeply want is a choice. I’d only wish I had female mentors at that time. So now I feel it’s my responsibility in some way to help other women who wish to grab their dreams by the proverbial balls. Describe the BKK social scene in your eyes To be frank, it’s gotten pretty lame or maybe I’m just getting old and tired of the same old sh*t. The clubbing scenes appear to have drowned in some pseudo dance/techno/trance vomit and overr un with prostitution and pubescent looking adults. Whilst the quality of clubbing has rapidly declined, the restaurant/bar and lounge culture providing fantastic food, choice local bands and musically refined djs are rapidly on the up. Yet there are some late night gems and day festivals, like Glow and Kolour, that are still plugging away successfully.
and eventually realised Thailand, well Bangkok really, is a land rich in oppor tunity, it’s charming in all its smog and grittiness, because here you can become anyone in your away-from-home anonymity. Faced with the reality of poverty and the strength of the local people, you will be challenged and inspired to think and work in a way you may never have dreamed possible at home. How would you describe yourself? Oh god, describe myself ? I’m a f iercely independent, foul mouthed, opinionated, straight talking, funny girl who doesn’t really take much sh*t from anyone. A girl, who loves to drink, talks, laughs loudly and dances crazily, also into books, photography and cult movies. Oh! And I’m obsessed with food! I believe in equality and fairness, particularly kindness and charity to those less for tunate. I am an extremely active and hyper individual, often burning myself out with projects and activities but I can’t help it. If my mind is not racing and my body is not continually moving I become restless. Where to next for Siamantha? Give us the lowdown on what projects you are currently working on and the next big thing you have your teeth into. The ones closest to my hear t which I’m honored to share is the Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs (WP&E) community. The modern and dynamic grows with events and exciting initiatives to motivate aspiring women. Another are plans for VIVIN Maison, the gourmet luxury food grocers. Nicolas Vivin, my amazing life partner and I, continue to share our food passion by providing delicious products to Bangkok’s fine dining by creating exciting collaborative events with our esteemed par tners and sponsors. VIVIN will be appearing on gourmet restaurant tables and premium stores around the city very soon. Last but certainly not least is my baby, my BIG baby of currently 21,000 plus members is Desperately Seeking Bangkok (DSBKK). The “seeking and suggesting” group continues to be a success. Good news is, soon you will be seeing DSBKK (DSeeking) outside of Facebook with a full blown online project, not much more I can say about it but this is the first scoop right here in ONE COAST!
So, you spent some time in Australia – tell us a bit about growing up and the transition between Thailand and Oz I am grateful for being brought up as an “Australian” for so many reasons; a sense of humor to star t, the Australian directness, hospitable nature and closeness in mateship. began in 1975 as Hilltribe Sales at the International Church of Bangkok. These volunteer-run events at International School Bangkok’s former downtown campus operated until 1992. In August of that year the ThaiCraft Association became an independent development organisation, For the first year only, small start-up administration grants were received from Dutch (ICCO) and British (ODA/Oxfam) funding agencies. By retaining a small share of sales revenue, ThaiCraft soon became and has remained a financially self-sufficient organisation. In the beginning, ThaiCraft partnered with 25 artisan groups from villages in Central, North and Northeast Thailand. Some Southern groups later joined us in 1995. Over the years, more than 80 groups have been involved, from remote hilltribe minorities in the North to Muslim fishing communities in the deep South; from city slum dwellers to rice-paddy farmers far off the beaten track. Small but valued grants came at times from the Ford Foundation and the Canada Fund to help strengthen producer capacity in villages and in training opportunities. Today, ThaiCraft’s 70 partner groups come from all regions of Thailand. Their representatives meet our staff and volunteers and, just as importantly, each other at ThaiCraft Fairs and also they share experiences and learning at our periodic workshops and seminars. ThaiCraft Fairs are a Moveable Feast The ThaiCraft Association began holding Sales at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center eight times a year. A small full-time staff supplemented by a host of incredible volunteers from the local and international communities in Bangkok held these Sales until September 1996, when The Landmark Hotel in Sukhumvit Road became the main venue. For one year, in late 2002 Sales were held at the Imperial Tara Hotel in Sukhumvit Soi 26. In 2003, the ThaiCraft Sale became the“ThaiCraft Fair” and moved to the Ambassador Hotel. For six years Fairs grew in numbers of vendors and attendance of customers. ThaiCraft added information about the craft producers to enhance the customers’ shopping experience and to allow greater understanding of how crafts are made and the regions of Thailand where they originate. ThaiCraft Fairs are currently held at the Jasmine City Building at the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Soi 23. This is a location favored by both ThaiCraft and its customers because of the ease of transport to the venue and the open space that allows a comfortable atmosphere in which to examine products, talk to producers and observe craft demonstrations. In order to present products to a wider audience, smaller Fairs are held from time to time at other venues, including the International School Bangkok (ISB) in Nonthaburi, at Bumrungrad Hospital’s annual Living In Bangkok event, at the Siam Society and at the International School of the Eastern Seaboard in Chonburi. ThaiCraft is always seeking other venue possibilities and we are happy to receive suggestions, whether it be at a school, international conference or in a new area. One Coast Magazine

The resulting drink is a deep orange hue and is an incredible heart-starter….watching it be prepared is almost like art, being poured from one vessel to another. Jib Nam Cha will be served every day, anywhere in the resort between 1 and 6pm. www.vanabellekohsamui.com 110

SIMPLE PLEASURES While I relaxed poolside, the kids kicked a ball about on the lower private grassed garden, squealing and having fun as children should and exhausting themselves in Samui’s sun for a great night’s sleep ahead. After a good sleep in and a wonderful nights rest, tomorrow we have decided is family day, where we will all come together – everyone pitching in to cook a late afternoon meal ourselves in the fully-fitted western kitchen before we all wander downstairs to our private cinema where we can curl up and enjoy some homemade popcorn…that is of course, if we can all agree on what movie to watch! Three years, it’s been three whole years since we last shared a family vacation and after building our new business into a success, we all knew it was time to take a break from the stress we were all feeling. Waking up at Samujana everyday has allowed us to indulge in the simple pleasures we had pushed to the side and really relax, unwind and enjoy every second of the sunshine and stunning surrounds. Yesterday we had an incredible Thai lunch with friends in the comfort of our own villa which was cooked by our forever-smiling private chef, where we laughed, ate and drank while we reminisced over old stories and memories. Today, all I wanted to do was to lie by the incredible infinity pool, gazing in to the expansive crystal blue waters of Samui’s ocean in the background while I drifted in and out of holiday-heaven, book in hand, as the cool breeze danced across my skin.
Relax. Unwind. Reconnect.
