N

eutrals have long been a staple in my wardrobe particularly a nude pump as they provide the illusion of elongating the legs. Whilst some say it’s a palette that is tricky to master it’s one that provides a minimalistic, clean yet extremely luxurious and sophisticated look that actually lends itself so perfectly to almost every colour scheme. Tr y exper imenting with your favourite shade of nude by selecting key pieces such as that perfect trench, nude handbag or those lust worthy Christian Louboutin heels. Whilst soft in nature the neutral palette makes a bold statement and alongside black and grey should be a staple in any women’s wardrobe.

Off the

Shoulder 4

The dÊcolletage, said to be one of the most beautiful, sensual and feminine parts of a woman’s body. Unlike other skin baring trends such as midriff top, the off the shoulder trend is one that can be embraced by all women. The seductiveness of this style translates from casual boho to red carpet glamour. For a sophisticated yet sexy feel try paring a loose off the shoulder top with a fitted leather pencil skirt or skinny pant and your favourite pumps. Or if a relaxed, casual, beachy look is more you, work an off the shoulder piece into your wardrobe via a maxi dress worn with oversized floppy hat.

AQVA DIVINA BVLGARI Playing homage to The Birth Of Venus this perfume offers up notes from the salty ocean combined with heady bergamot and touches of spice. Ginger, magnolia, amber, beeswax and salts merge to create a spicy, sensual and bright per fume for the woman who takes no prisoners.

Armani Suits International

Midnight at the Oasis Aah, the great outdoors. Mother Nature in all its glory. Being gently awoken by a dawn chorus and a perfect sunrise. Just a zipper away from the stars. Disconnecting from the trappings of modernity. The simple life.

As we turn the corner from another red-hot summer and think about where to pitch our tents in the coming months, One Coast Magazine decided to check out some of the top camping spots across the UAE. With a variety of landscapes to choose from around the Emirates, we are blessed with a welcome dilemma and sites to suit all city escapees - from adventurers to ‘glampers’, to laid back camp fire dwellers.

words by Stuart Langrish

Ras al-Khaimah Bedouin Oasis

Ras al-Khaimah or ‘Top of the Tent’ is one of the major emirates of United Arab Emirates and is situated in the northern part of the country (hence the name), and surrounds the Omani exclave, Musandam, featured next. If glamping is more your thing and having the benefits of an authentic desert experience with a few luxuries thrown in, minus the headache of unpacking tents and peeing in the dark, then consider a stay at the Bedouin Oasis Camp. This traditional retreat is surrounded by dunes on all sides, including one of the tallest in Ras al-Khaimah desert and counts Banyan Tree Al Wadi as an esteemed neighbour. Transporting you back 100 years, this Arabian sanctuary has carefully reproduced a Bedouin style oasis with a few modern amenities thrown in, like flushable toilets. Using no electricity, at night the camp is gently illuminated with antique lanterns, so you can relax by the fire after an Arabian bbq enjoying shisha under the stars, on a cushioned throne wondering how long you can stay in the desert until somebody notices. Contact www.arabianincentive.com for more information; while those of you are driving, can follow down Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Ras al-Khaimah and follow the signage near Banyan Tree Al Wadi.

Fossil Rock (Jebel Maleihah, Lahbab Sands)

One of the UAE’s best-known off-road spots for beginners and just 30 minutes from the bright lights of Dubai, the Lahbab Sands are tinged orange-red due to iron oxide and named for the fossil shells you might find in the area. Perfect for those testing the sand with their tents for the first time or families travelling with children insured by the comfort of an easy escape. Heading out from Al Awir, let down your tyres and head past the walled summer palace, following the pylon lines to Fossil Rock. If you’re feeling confident, tackle the 300ft sand dune Big Red and then set up camp nearby to discuss your conquest by campfire. If the weather suits, skip the tent and roll out your sleeping bag for a night under the stars.

Empty Quarter (Rub Al Khali, Liwa)

Driving out of Abu Dhabi, head southwards for approximately three hours and eventually you will reach a natural wonder that is the Liwa Oasis, located on the edge of the infamous Rub Al Khali or the ‘Empty Quarter’. Offering a glimpse into the celebrated heritage of the UAE and the historical home of ruling families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it is inhabited mostly by Bedouin tribes and provides a great place for explorers looking to step back in time and experience their diverse culture and colourful environment. However, if tickling more than just your traditional fancy is required, a visit to Liwa doesn’t have to be about culture and date farms. The colossal sand dunes provide adventurous spirits with the perfect spot for desert safaris, extreme sports and dune bashing, with 300m high banks that should only be attempted by experts or the extremely foolhardy jacked on red bull. As the area is relatively quiet, it can be a good spot for picnics and for some breath-taking 4×4 drives. A word of warning however, when camping stay close to the edge of the Liwa Oasis, because while the desert offers a welcome retreat to set up base, getting lost in the Empty Quarter is not something we’d recommend.

Khor Najd (Musandam Peninsula)

The Musandam peninsula or the ‘Norway of Arabia’ due to its similarity with the sheer sided fjords and dramatic mountains of Scandinavia. Offering the finest view of the fjords in the entire UAE region, Khor Najd is considered to be the best place to camp in the area. Therefore, setting up tents and having a blazing BBQ grill going is one of the must-do-things here and another insta-brag worthy like magnet. Seeing as Khor Najd is the most visited region of the Musandam, many cruise rides to the fjords are offered in and around the region with a selection of different tour packages to choose from. Some of the cruise operators offer an overnight trip with camping facilities at a remote beach near the fjords, while others offer half-day cruise trips, with options for camping as well. Check out www.dolphinkhasabtours.com and their Outdoor Camping package if a day cruising the islands in a traditional Omani dhow boat spotting dolphins, and camping on a comfortably attired private beach seem like a good idea to you.

CAUTION!

CROSSFIT AS THE CROSSFIT CULT CONTINUES TO DOMINATE THE FITNESS INDUSTRY, THE RISK OF INJURY INCREASES THROUGH INEXPERIENCED TRAINERS AND LACK OF TECHNICAL KNOWELDGE. IN FACT THE MOST DANGEROUS ASPECT OF CROSSFIT IS CHASING BIG NUMBERS AND ADVANCED MOVEMENTS WITHOUT ANY RESPECT FOR THE PROCESS OR THE MECHANICS TO ACHIEVE THEM. PROPER FORM IS PARAMOUNT AND STEADY PROGRESSION WITH RESPECT TO FORM IS IMPERATIVE TO AVOIDING INJURY. words by Callum McGregor

As a Personal Trainer I get asked on numerous occasions for my opinion on Crossfit. So in this article I will be sharing with you my highly educated and totally none-biased opinion and the raw facts backed up by years of research and professional input. My goal is to educate people about fitness and health and to warn against potentially harmful or unhealthy diet and exercise practices, and that’s what I’m going to do in this article. I’ll start with a few personal anecdotes. When I first stumbled upon Crossfit, I was working on a Nuclear navy base in Scotland where, we, as Royal Marine Commandos where tasked with nuclear asset protection. I worked out daily with some of my team members there. Crossfit was just starting up and some military guys were loving it. The first workout I did was a series of pullups, pushups, and dips, and I couldn’t move my arms the next day. No big deal, I’d been sore before.

I did a couple more WODs (Crossfit speak: Workout of the Day) that were these types of circuits and they were fine. But one of my civilian friends later invited me to the gym where she taught Crossfit and I jumped in on a WOD. First of all, I got there as people were attempting to do muscle-ups. No one was succeeding. The training they’d had in Crossfit really hadn’t prepared them to do this movement, so it was just a matter of attempting it over and over again. These were people who had been doing Crossfit for years at this point, and I’ve never gotten as many looks as when I jumped up on a pair of rings and pumped a couple out.

What was my secret? How could I do this without having done Crossfit ever before? Well, I had trained as an athlete, lifted, and done many bodyweight exercises over my years as a member of the British Special Forces. Crossfit doesn’t translate into body control.

Beauty WELLNESS

So that workout was going to have deadlifts, which I had never done; to this day, I still don’t do them (but that’s another post altogether on risk: reward ratios). Having never done deadlifts, I got less than five minutes of instruction before weight was piled on. Afterward, I got five minutes of instruction on the “kipping pull-up” and instruction on kettle bell swing before I was given a 35 lb bell. Then the timer started. I was constantly yelled at to go faster, to take shortcuts, and to do movements from which previous injuries precluded me. It was a whirlwind, and all I remember was stopping at one point and watching some of the bad form that people were using around me and that’s when I started to worry. A few months later, a coach at my local gym tried to convince me to try CF again and I did a workout with him. He was pretty knowledgeable of form, but the workout we did involved thrusters, burpees, and kettle bell swings as fast as you could possibly go. I should have known better that the thruster combination of cleans and push press shouldn’t be done for speed/time, but I did it anyway. I was dead afterwards and incredibly sore the next day, with some aches and pains that didn’t go away for quite a while. After doing some research, I have never done (and will never do) Crossfit again, and here’s why: First of all, let me say that I have been an athlete for years. Let’s just disregard my strongman training and my competitive power lifting, and jump right to my Royal marine Commando training and selection. Never once, in the six years I served as a British commando training with some of the UK’s fittest people, did my strength coaches give me a workout sheet that told me to do Olympic or Power lifts for time. Never once did they give me a workout that told me to do sets of 15, 20, or 30 Olympic or Power lifts. Never once did they tell me to do as many as I possibly could. Never once in the six years as a commando, two years as a Scottish strongman competitor or during my power lifting training have these things occurred. Why? Because Olympic and power lifts are not meant to be done in sets of 30 or for time. They are extremely technique-oriented and are meant to be explosive and powerful over very short periods of time with plenty of rest. Subjecting your muscles to those movements continuously for time or for reps sets you up for injury.

The point here is that subjecting your muscles to extremely high stress repetitively is not good. Crossfit seems to think that the more pain you are in, whether on that day or the days following the workout, the better. The more you disregard the pain and keep pushing through it, the “tougher” you are. But this is not true, and more importantly, it’s not healthy. Not only are the exercises themselves risky, but performing them under a fatigued state, such as during an intense circuit, increases the risk of injury even further. Moreso, the technique involved in performing such technical lifts must be taught and learned over time, closely observed and practised with caution. Not with five minutes of instruction and then performed without strict observation. So my professional advice and opinion for you on taking up Crossfit is: try it, if it works for you. But be actutely aware of the mechanics and the dangers. If you are properly instructed then ask questions and take it slowly. The vast majority of exercises used in Crossfit are heavily based around Olympic lifts and should be carried out with correct, strong form and disciplined control. This cannot be done when you are carrying out dozens and dozens of reps, with high exhaustion kicking in, like in Crossfit, your form will suffer considerably. When considering a new form of exercise to do in order to get into shape just keep it simple. Go back to basics like running, rowing, cycling, HIIT training for cardio and resistance training to improve muscle size, shape, tone and strength. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that you have to follow the latest fitness fads or the newest fancy machine! Most “new” fitness crazes are simply marketing techniques, money making schemes to give people hope of a quick fix and fast results. Keep it simple and old school and above all else: PUT IN THE EFFORT, DON’T CUT CORNERS & GIVE 100 % ALWAYS! You will see results.

Samornpun Somnam, affectionately known as “Tarn”, is Keemala’s Executive Director. Youthful and vibrant, Tarn is the younger of two siblings of a traditional Phuket family that has established themselves as a prominent entrepreneur in Phuket’s hospitality industry. Having studied at Thailand’s prestigious Mahidol University International College and Les Roches International School of Hotel Management in Bluche, Switzerland, Tarn holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in Hospitality Management with concentration in Marketing. Realizing early on that she wanted to join her family business, Tarn chose Marketing as her specialization because she felt that it reflected her passions for traveling and building relationships with people. Aware and grateful of the foundation that her family has built for her generation, Tarn cherishes family values and believes strongly that “gratitude leads to success in life”. A firm believer in sincerity being a valuable tool in building relationships, Tarn’s innate empathy towards her workforce is ever-present and she radiates an inner beauty that makes her truly unique. It’s no surprise then that she is highly revered by all of her staff, integrating seamlessly with her entire team,as a family, from the ground up. It is this closeness and compassion for all that sets Tarn apart from other hospitality directors and it is a rare quality that will ensure success and positive growth in all her endeavours. On creating the Keemala concept, Tarn envisions a resort where guests can “rebel against their hectic lifestyle and slow down to enjoy nature and local culture.” By showcasing Phuket’s tropical woodland splendor alongside preserving Thailand’s longstanding traditions and cultures through Keemala’s way of life, she hopes to contribute to making Phuket a sustainable destination. Humble and utterly unpretentious, Tarn is balanced, firmly grounded, with a strong connection to nature and an appreciation for simple beauty. Despite her background in the upper echelons of Phuket society, she understands that luxury does not equate to expense. In fact quite the opposite. When asked which of the new Keemala villas she would prefer to stay in, she chose not the largest or most exclusive Tree Pool or Birds Nest villas, rather the standard Clay Pool villa. Her reason being that the standard rom offers everything she needs plus more - the forest dwelling brings her closer to nature, to the place where she is most comfortable - and at peace. And with that in mind, she believes that to build a successful concept, “bringing back a culture of simplicity is the key to brilliance.”

THE KEE TO SUCCESS More often than not, the true success of a family business relies on a woman’s touch. Tenderness, diplomacy and charm go a long way. Executive Director of Phuket’s Kee Hotel and upcoming Keemala Resort Samornpun Somnam may be young, yet she is wise beyond her years, with a grace and inner beauty that will undoubtedly elevate her father’s vision to great new heights. words & photo by Johnny McGeorge

Bend impossible everyday and it will break This month One Coast Magazine gets its butt off the comfy sofa puts on its trail shoes and has a closer look at one of the worlds toughest and most beautiful but gruelling Ultra Marathons. The Coastal Challenge or The Rainforest Run in Costa Rica is certainly an “Ultra” Marathon of the elite class. If you’re looking to compete with some of the worlds best trail runners and run through some of the worlds most stunning terrain then this could be for you. Desolate secluded beaches, dark thick jungle rainforest, cloud covered mountains and picturesque highlands are all part of the 230 km Adventure Run or the 150 km Expedition. Around 50 competitors from all over the world will put to the test their mental and physical toughness and compete at the next challenge in February 2016 along Costa Rica’s tropical Pacific coastline and zigzag into the Talamancas, a coastal mountain range in the Southwest corner of the country. The Coastal Challenge is a 6-stage event covering a total distance of 230Km in the expedition category with a course elevation of over 10 km. ‘The danger of an advenTure is worTh a Thousand days of ease and comforT’ The Coastal Challenge has been ranked as one of the most demanding multi stage races in the world and the race organizers have certainly put together an amazing course balancing the tropical climate with distance and severity of terrain. Each day you will be tested again and again with the harsh heat and jungle humidity. If you love trail running TCC will put you mentally and physically to the ultimate test. Trails set through dense humid jungle and rainforest, highlands and coastal ranges with magnificent primeval beaches, reefs and river valleys passing waterfalls and estuaries that defy description. But don’t let the natural beauty here lead you into a false sense of security. Here the ancient jungle is king and conquering the heat is only the first obstacle. Here you will find both spectacular and dangerous creatures along the way. Poisonous insects and invertebrates make their home here and will be just as curious about you. Runners speak of “Jungle Motivation” as the sun starts to set and a strange urgency sets in to move as fast as possible out of the forest where things can see you but you can’t see them. After 6 days runners will end up in Corcovado National Park one of the world’s premier rainforests near the border of Panama in a tranquil fishing village that until only recently was only assessable by boat. Runners on the TCC find a certain comradeship and friendship between each other. Coming from all walks of life and all over the world competitors range from young to old and one such participant Jay Norman from the USA just enjoyed his 71st birthday on the 2015 TCC with now 5 TCC’s to boot. Choose from two categories Expedition – 230 KM Adventure 150 Km In a team of 3-6 or solo

If you have guts, determination and the balls to run one of the worlds hardest Ultra Marathons then the TCC might be just for you, but register soon most of the places are booked early. “now bid me run and i shall sTrive wiTh Things impossible” http://thecoastalchallenge.com

The graphene chassis (a combination of carbon fiber and Kevlar), saves weight while actually increasing structural rigidity. This with an all-new sheet metal that is noticeably sleeker and more aerodynamic, gives the car explosive-power aesthetics. Esteemed British engineer Lee Noble has played an integral role in fine tuning the chassis and handling, ensuring it drives just as good as it looks. To Maximise high-speed stability, the Hussarya features a number of aero elements including an active rear spoiler. This helps provide down force at high speeds and under braking can deploy to serve as an air brake. 54

ONE COAST

According to the latest spec sheet, the Hussarya is powered by an 8.2-liter V-8 producing more than 800 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. The 650-horsepower predecessor was capable of tearing from zero to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 211 mph. The upgraded production model promises much more. Production of the Hussarya commences later this year, with testing of prototypes, like this one unveiled at the recent Poznań Auto Show in Poland, nearing the final stages. Charging with 800 Horses, the Polish Cavalry looks set to destroy anything in its path. www.arrinera.com

LifestyleRIDE But in 2014 after much old machinery had been replaced a new bigger better and all new Road Glide was launched. Here the serious change came in the fairing, although it was still 100% a Road Glide with its Shark look it now had a triple split stream venting system and it’s slightly newly designed shape procured through extensive wind tunnel testing. Inside the fairing HD had completely upgraded the entertainment system The Boom! Box 4.3 infotainment system features two amplified 25-watt speakers and a “Jukebox” media compartment with a USB connector. Riders control the system via twin joysticks on a new, swept-back handlebar. Powering this 360kg beast is Harley Davidsons famous V twin 1688 cc powerhouse and with adjustable air suspension and 6 gears the Road Glide is always going to be at the front of the pack. Its style will always be something to discuss over a few cold drinks but one thing is written in stone “ The Road Glide is a riders bike and there’s nothing this bike loves more than effortlessly devouring thousands of KMS of open road. Haters might be hating but you’re sure doing it in style. The new 2015 Road Glide can be seen at your Authorized Harley Davidson Dealer.

HATERS GONNA HATE

words by Crispin Paton-Smith

In this issue, One Coast takes you to the dark far corner of your local biker bar and lends an ear to the bearded bourbon drinking crew in ripped and patched leathers. It was here we hoped to gather some information about the Harley Davidson Road Glide. A model Loved by a few, hated my many but feared seemingly by all. The Road glide has a certain enigma and tight bound following and many a long night will be spent arguing about the ads and cons of riding such an imposing motorcycle. The Harley Davidson Road glide has been in production since 1979 when it was originally named the “Tour Glide” It made a heavy impact on the biking fraternity because of its huge touring size and especially the large Shark nose fairing which was a fixed mount onto the frame not the handlebars meaning it would not move with the bars. This bike quickly developed in the years adding music systems and modern biking electronics such as cruise control and ABS brakes. Harley Davidson stopped production of thew Road Glide in 2012 and rumour control was totally out of hand with what was or could happen now.

DARK FLAME:

ASTON MARTIN VULCAN words by Crispin Paton-Smith

24 CARS, 24 HOUR RACES AND 24 BOND FILMS SEEM LIKE THE PERFECT COINCIDENCE. HOWEVER, THE ASTON MARTIN VULCAN TRACK-ONLY SUPERCAR IS STAYING ON THE DARK SIDE IN ULTRA LIMITED NUMBERS AND A UNIQUE OWNERSHIP PROGRAM. Even James Bond isn’t good enough for Aston Martin’s masterpiece. There are only 24 examples worldwide of this all-carbon fiber super car built out of years of extensive motorsport experience. This car is powered by the most potent statement yet of Aston Martin’s naturally aspirated, 7.0-liter V12 petrol engine. With its 800-plus BHP powerhouse developed in conjunction with Aston Martin Racing, this front mid-engine, and rear-wheel drive sports car draws extensively on the brand’s rich GT motorsport participation. This pure motorsport supercar sees its power-toweight ratio exceed those of the GTE cars that compete in the FIA’s annual World Endurance Championship. The new Vulcan will of course comply with all relevant FIA race safety requirements.

The car was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England this year and with a top speed of over 200 mph and a 0 -60 in less than three seconds it’s a serious testimony from the company. It should though be noted that this is a real track only racing vehicle and even with it’s sexy exterior you won’t be finding an air condition or a CD player inside. For those of us that don’t find the $2.3 million price tag a hurdle then you’d better hurry as this car will be even more exclusive than the limited-edition One-77 Aston Martin model.

Before delivery of their cars, owners will be offered the chance to take part in an extensive and detailed program of intensive driver racetrack training. “The cars will blend our traditional Aston Martin values of Power, Beauty and Soul with an unrivalled ownership experience; a unique combination that will guarantee their place in the brand’s rich and charismatic history.”

It’s been an interesting journey with several of the ups and downs that most property developers will have experienced. I started out in property at the age of 24 with an engineering degree and no money but I managed to persuade someone with some money that I could redesign his property splitting it into two flats. After this initial success, we did some further conversions together before the recession of the early 90’s set in in the UK. During this period, it was difficult to get finance from the banks and I focussed more on construction rather than development. Eventually, I had accumulated enough to do my own developments without other investors and I then focussed mainly in Notting Hill in London where I did many refurbishments and conversions of Victorian buildings. I still have a number of properties in Notting Hill which I manage and let out. In 2007, I came to Phuket and bought some fantastic oceanfront land in Kata and Kata Rocks was born. Which have been the most ‘memorable’ projects in your portfolio? Kata Rocks in Phuket has without doubt been the biggest and most challenging development to date. The brief was to create these oversized Sky Villas, all with private pools, and all with full sea views. What we now have is a truly iconic development and resort with these amazing futuristic buildings that look like they have been inspired by superyachts with their wrap around glass and louvers. We genuinely offer the space of a villa combined with the 5-star service of a quality boutique hotel. How does London currently look as an investors market? What areas would be worth targeting given the current economic climate? The prime areas of London have always shown great resilience to any downturn and they have seen some very good rises over the last few years. The same cannot be said for the rest of the UK which has generally lagged behind London. London is one of the world’s truly international cities with a strong financial services market and it consequently attracts plenty of foreign purchasers as well as UK purchasers. It will always be a good long term investment especially if you buy in the prime areas which are essentially around Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens (Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Kensington, Notting Hill etc). I still have several properties in Notting Hill which is to the north west of Kensington Gardens and they have done very well over the last few years. Often after a rise in prices in London, purchasers are attracted to the ‘up-and-coming’ areas but personally I like to stick to the traditionally prime ones as they are always more recession proof. With Kata Rocks, why Phuket specifically and how did you find such an incredible site? I first came to Phuket to sail in the King’s Cup Regatta in 2006 and I was not really thinking of doing any business here. While I was here on that trip, a friend got involved in a project on Natai Beach and so I looked at that and got interested in what was happening on the island in terms of property development. I met some people who I asked to look for land for me and I was shown lots of rubbish but on one of my trips back to Phuket in the middle of 2007, I was shown the Kata Rocks site. It was one of those sites which as a developer you know straight away that you need to buy it … oceanfront, west facing for the sunset, perfect slope, great rocks placed like ornaments in front of it and looking straight at the little island Koh Phu … it didn’t take a genius to see that one! 58

ONE COAST

With “luxury” a standard issue platitude in Thailand, what was your inspiration for Kata Rocks and what unique features set it apart from other Phuket luxury property? The inspiration is the unique site and its amazing rock features joining it to the Andaman Sea. Luxury is certainly an overused word in real estate in Thailand. I think Kata Rocks stands out for many reasons … prime oceanfront site, all Sky Villas have their own private pools, all with great sea views, 460 sqm penthouses, great resort facilities, 5 -star hotel-style ser vice etc. But, you don’t have to take my word for it … Kata Rocks has won more International Property Awards than any other development in the world including the title of “Best Apartment in the World” which we won in London beating entries from 110 countries. This year, we have gone on to win 10 new resort awards as well including “Best Small Hotel in Asia” and “Best Boutique Spa in Asia”. Asia obviously plays to a different set of rules than developing in UK. How was the culture shock? Most aspects of development are actually the same whether you are developing in the UK or Thailand … you still have to find a great site, good architects, good contractor etc … and make it happen. In Thailand compared to the UK, the biggest problem is communication and you need to surround yourself with good Thai people that you can trust. I have been very fortunate to still have the core team that I started with 7 years ago and this has very much contributed to the success of the project. I have found that often it is the westerners who do not perform here and not the Thais. What wisdom (grey hairs) have you gained from Kata Rocks that you could impart as advice to potential or fledgeling developers? I’ve gained a few grey hairs during this project! To be a developer anywhere, you need to know quite a lot about a multitude of things if you are going to succeed - legal, accounting, sales, marketing, construction, design etc. In the UK, it is easy to find experts in all these areas but it is not that easy to find the right people here. You also need great attention to detail … walking the site and checking everything. Would you consider further projects elsewhere in Thailand? I have built up some great teams here including an in-house design team, project and construction management teams and the resort management team. I am therefore interested in doing more projects here if the right sites come along at the right price. I am also looking at other possibilities in Europe. Is Kata Rocks your magnum opus or is it the benchmark for things to come? What’s left on your bucket list? Kata Rocks has been a very unique project and it is the signature development and resort for my company Infinite Luxury. With Infinite Luxury, we intend to build more projects of a similar nature around the globe … essentially offering the space of a luxury villa with the service of a 5-star hotel.

MT. BROMO 80

ONE COAST

IJEN SULFUR MINE Ijen volcano complex is made up of several strato-volcanoes, the highest being Gunung Merapi, the ominously titled ‘mountain of fire’. From the summit you look down on the shockingly turquoise acidic crater lake. One-kilometre-wide and the largest in the world of its kind, its concentration is enough to dissolve clothing. While the view from the top is utterly memorable and alone a legitimate reason to visit Mt. Ijen, for me the real motivation was to appreciate the sulfur mine itself and the storied electric-blue flames visible only at night. After Mt. Bromo we drove on for another five hours to Catimor homestay, notable for its much needed natural spring hot tub. We were informed of our new alarm choices, each dependant on the groups wishes to see the blue sulfur gases or just sunrise. We voted to forgo the extra four hours sleep and turned in. Five hours later we rose at midnight, and began our two-hour trek in pitch black to the crater rim, followed by a treacherous hour climb down to the mine itself. As an enthusiastic walker I was surprised how many times during the trek I considered stopping and turning back.

Maybe it is the fact you do it on a few hours sleep and an empty stomach; possibly it’s the endless winding rock steps scattered with crumbling shards, rife for slips; or it could be the sickening feel of breathing though a heavy gas mask to protect yourself from the even more nauseating sulfur fumes. After over an hour spent silently congratulating myself on not giving up I realised how wholly insignificant my achievement was. Coming upon the first miner making his ascent from the crater, laden with 75kg baskets of freshly cut sulphur is an overwhelmingly sight. It pained me to grasp that something I had decided to do for ‘an experience’ and an absurd sense of accomplishment, was in actual fact a back-breakingly arduous profession that so many in the area were forced to do for pittance. The miners negotiate the crater 2 - 3 times a day, each time carrying their bodyweight in sulfur. They navigate the slippery crevices whilst balancing an impossible load on bamboo stick baskets across one shoulder, stopping only to receive cigarettes from well-meaning tour guides. Harry, our own guide and ex-miner forced to stop because of a shattered scapula, explained to us how most of the miners didn’t wear the uncomfortable gas masks as they made it difficult to climb. This results in daily exposure to noxious fumes causing a high risk of respiratory diseases, not to mention the irritation to eyes and skin that continuous exposure to sulfur gases can cause. The payment for such work is around $15 a day – an appallingly trivial amount in any currency for such a perilous job. Tourism in such an area feels strange – inappropriate and tasteless, but Harry advised that, despite some resentment, most miners welcome it. Money obtained from tourists taking photos or the purchase of small sulfur carvings is often twice as much as that received from the mining itself. There is also hope that a heightened awareness of Ijen sulfur mine might encourage their own government to improve safety standards and conditions for the miners. For this reason it is key that guests visiting Ijen are not miserly with their donations, do not view this through the cynical eyes of a tourist as a scam or money grabbing façade – it is what you see; an endless struggle of hard work and grit that is their life. So if you can – give. ONE COAST

SQUIRE’S LOFT BRING AUSTRALIA’S FINEST CUTS TO THE CARNIVOROUS CONNOISSUERS OF KOH SAMUI Squires Loft steakhouses were established in 1995 in Melbourne Victoria Australia. Their concept is simple: to serve only high quality cuts of pasture and grain fed beef sourced from the lush pastures of Gippsland in Victoria Australia. A unique selling point and perhaps the secret to their success is that all beef is aged for 28 days and the speicifc cuts of meat are exclusive to the Squires Loft brand. From the ultimate tender cut 200gram or 300gram Eye Fillet or the mouth watering taste sensation 400gram Rib Eye, Squires Loft have every cut of beef available to satisfy the hungriest of mouths.

Not only supplying beef, the boys of Squires Loft cater across the board with a sprinkling of seafood, lamb, pork spare ribs, Wagyu sausages, Wagyu burger and despite being a dedicated meating place, they even cater for the odd vegetarian. Another point of differentiation which set Squires Loft apart from the competition is the introduction of specially designed grills imported all the way from Australia. These meat heating specific grills ensure their steaks are cooked to perfection. And the proof of the quality is in the growth the brand has seen. Since 1995 Squires Loft has grown to have 15 stores Australia wide with new stores opening in the next 12 months. Koh Samui is the first store to venture outside of Australia located in the quaint little village known as Fisherman’s Village Bophut.

Sea Shepherd S

ea Shepherd Conservation Society is a non-profit marine conservation organization whose mission is to end the slaughter of wildlife and destruction of habitats in the world’s oceans. Sea Shepherd’s work is dedicated to protecting its clients — the many, diverse species of wildlife that live within the ocean’s eco-systems — from the tiny plankton to the great whales. Through innovative, non-violent, direct-action tactics, Sea Shepherd investigates, documents, and takes action when necessary in order to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas.

Sea Shepherd has grown to the point where it is no longer just an organization, it is now a movement of passionate individuals around the world who care about conserving, protecting and defending our oceans. Sea Shepherd does what others can’t, or won’t. Sea Shepherd USA leads or participates in campaigns and efforts to defend ocean wildlife all around the world, from cooperating in efforts to oppose illegal shark finning and wildlife trafficking in the Galapagos Islands, to documentation and research in the oiltainted waters of the Gulf of Mexico, to protecting endangered turtles from poaching in Costa Rica, and to standing watch on the shores of Taiji, Japan and intervening in the Faroe Islands in defense of dolphins and whales. Each year since 2010, Sea Shepherd has had a team of Cove Guardian volunteers in Taiji documenting the brutal capture and slaughter of dolphins and small whales, as part our Operation Infinite Patience campaign. Sea Shepherd is the only group on the ground daily throughout the six-month hunting season, typically spanning from Sept. 1 until March, documenting and live streaming every capture and slaughter for the world to see. Entire pods of cetaceans are driven into Taiji’s killing cove, and there the inextricable link between the global trade in captive dolphins and the slaughter of cetaceans can be seen, as the “prettiest” members of the pods are taken for captivity and their family members are brutally killed. As there are many dolphinariums and aquariums in Malaysia and throughout the world, it is important for people to know that the easiest and most effective way anyone can oppose the slaughter in Taiji is to stop supporting aquariums and marine parks that hold dolphins and whales captive. The captive trade generates the real money behind Taiji’s hunt, the incentive that fuels the killing. A single dolphin can sometimes be sold for $350,000 USD. $HOW M€ TH£ MONE¥

words by Jeremy Briggs

As children we all dream about what we’re going to do when, if ever, we grow up. Some kids want to be fireman, some want to be astronauts and others can think of nothing better than being a Formula One driver, holding aloft the soccer Champions League Trophy or throwing the winning pass in the Super Bowl.

For most of us lesser mortals when, if ever, we grow up, we will end up in some humdrum routine line of work that pays the bills and bores us silly. Every so often we stare at the clock on the wall, waiting to go home, make dinner for our 2.4 children family, watch some toxic TV, go to bed, wake up and do it all again.

If and when it’s not the media out to get you, it’s the other team, and almost all team sports can be life threatening to even the most hardy of souls. Take Cricket, a game that can take up to five days and still result in a draw, meandering through drink breaks and cucumber sandwiches, regularly claims a few tragic deaths every year.

While the minutes, hours, days and years of our lives vanish, some of us think back to those joyful days of youth wishing we’d done a few more keep ups in the back yard or practiced our serve a little harder and then maybe, just maybe we could have been something special – you were pretty good after all – weren’t you?

There must be an easier way I hear you say? Surely some star athletes can waltz through on natural talent alone without fear of being taken out by a team of Cauliflower eared Rugby players and simultaneously earning more money than God? Look no further – we’ve done the research for you.

The general population tends to lack the dedication required to be the next Pelé, Roger Federer or Mohammed Ali. The fact of the matter is that pros work long, hard, boring hours to get where they are. And they work even harder to compete in a professional field with the fickle eye of the media watching their every move, eternally fishing for the slightest sign of weakness. Paul Gascoigne, Lance Armstrong and Andre Agassi, you know what we’re talking about.

It turns out sometimes it’s possible to get an easy…ish ride. Kieron Dyer spent 17 years playing football in the Premier League for his hometown Ipswich followed by Newcastle United, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers before snapping his legs, hanging up his boots and doing a spot of part-time coaching. In the soccer world that’s a fairly good career and Dyer averaged over 4 million pounds sterling per year throughout this period – which isn’t to be scoffed at! More interesting is how much football Dyer has actually played – from 2007 he was plagued by injury and made only 48 professional appearances, most of which not for the full 90 minutes, so being semi-retired at age 36, having earned over 60 million pounds and playing around 5 games of football a year for the last 8 years is pretty impressive! Don’t forget Dyer isn’t even that good, imagine what Michael Owen earned and gambled away whilst barely playing for Manchester United.

92

ONE COAST

EcoHABITAT Injury and laziness are different beasts though, and soccer players will run an average of about 7 miles during a ninety minute period which is more than most of us achieve every month. These guys do it every week, and sometimes twice a week. And they run fast! And they train most days.

At least that’s how it works for Floyd Mayweather Jr., if all 48 of his fights had gone the distance he would have actually competed professionally for a grand total of 37 hours and 36 minutes, including the minute interval between rounds where you get a drink and a bit of a massage. That’s $10 million an hour! In fact it’s better than that – out of 48 fights 26 were KO’s and Mayweather can claim around 28 hours of action with a $400 mil payoff. Not bad.

Minimum wage in the USA: $7.25 p/h Floyd Mayweather hourly rate: $14,285,714.30 It seems that pro soccer, and pretty much every team sport is not for those whose idea of recreation is a cup of tea and a biscuit. It is also worth noting that Kieron Dyer, who probably loves footie more than life itself, would have preferred playing to sitting on the bench rubbing his gloved hands as a very highly paid spectator.

Time taken for the average American to achieve $400,000,000 assuming they doesn’t spend any of it eating, paying rent or buying Ferraris: 55,172,413 hours which equates to around 6,300 years. That’s some pretty hard time and you’d have to be immortal and work 24/7. Kids…get the gloves on!

Whilst planning your new life as a sportsman, if injuries are not your major concern then why not fully embrace a real contact sport? Boxing for example…

So Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather may have grossed the highest net worth, but in the eyes of some and going by hourly rate alone, he might not be considered the best paid sports person out there. There is a man who earns more per hour, a lot more and doesn’t have to dodge a punch. And the winner is…drum roll...Usain Bolt. If you look at the aptly named Bolt’s running career, he has competitively run a grand total of 3600 metres. Two and a quarter miles. And his guy genuinely wanted to play professional soccer! In his entire career, he has run as far as a midfielder in the first 30 minutes of a nil-nil draw! In his entire career, and he’s worth 30 million bucks! To cut a long story short, Usain Bolt is probably not only the best paid sportsman, but the best paid man in the World with a staggering salary equivalent to $300,000,000 an hour. That’s assuming every 100 metres takes him around 10 seconds, which equates to 6 minutes paid work in his entire life.

Going by the moniker ‘Money’ Mayweather, it seems pretty obvious who is really cashing in on their bashing in skills. So far the pimped out punching machine has amassed a total net worth of around $400 million – with this sort of dough lying about he could pay the annual wages of every player on Paris Saint Germain’s books, the World’s highest paid sports team, and still have enough left over to buy a few Ferraris, a drawful of diamond encrusted watches, a hangar of private jets and, just in case, a few more Ferraris.

It transpires that in the four hours wasted on the tedious build up to the Mayweather-Pacquiao brawl, Bolt could have earned triple what ‘Money’ Mayweather has got stashed under his bed. This means, to you and me, that in the time it takes us to watch the latest Game of Thrones episode Usain Bolt could earn more money than we would have, even if we arrived at the office sometime around the invention of fire! Kids…take off the gloves and go for a run!

So basically his lifestyle would remain the same – and that lifestyle involves some pretty heaving training leading up to any given fight, 48 so far without loss. This goes to show if you’re good enough it doesn’t even have to be full contact, it can be half contact. Just dodging and weaving on the back foot for twelve rounds till the judges point out the obvious – you won – cos you hit the guy who kept missing you.

Welcome to Wonderland

The idea of creating this fantasy party with surreal decoration, mind boggling food and unexpected twists and turns throughout the evening first inspired me in 2005 when I was hired to supply the bar and catering team for Lizzy Jaggers 21st birthday at Hampton court in London. Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall had planned this as a surprise party. We had to sign a non-disclosure agreement before we could have any involvement. When we arrived we weren't sure what to expect but were totally blown away. I've never seen anything quite like it. No expense was spared by the set designer who had transformed the period mansion into a fantasy wonderland fit for a movie set. There were huge wooden corridors being built, lined with black and white tiles which decreased in size to create the feeling of a massive corridor which was actually diminishing in size until guests had to crawl out of a little door at the end. This was being fitted into an existing corridor which filled with magnificent works of art, as was every room and corridor in the house. A maze made of real roses was built inside a hall for guests to get lost in as little actors played the part of shisha smoking caterpillars, white rabbits and Cheshire cats in trees. The huge dinner table was filled with a towering stack of wonky vintage cups, saucers and teapots, with vintage clocks and old books fashioned into furniture and hung from trees. The menu consisted of all kinds of fairytale food from mock turtle soup, red rose cakes, playing card canapÊs and even four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. Every detail was stunning and meticulously crafted. The atmosphere was giddy with a childlike playfulness and as guests arrived the whole thing sprung into life. Pete Townsend and Val Kilmer were getting very drunk. John Lennon’s youngest son was playing an antique grand piano with Jerry Hall singing theatrically as Ronnie Wood, Bob Geldof and Mick Jagger jostled over champagne in dainty teacups.

Inspired, I began acquiring vintage tea sets from thrift stores and antique fares and started my own 'Mad Hatter' wedding parties in the antiquated Victorian halls and Manors around the Home Counties of south east England. Since launching my event catering business 'Toast' on Samui, I have been waiting to get out the China and dust off the teapots. I met Jacqui and Jess from Samui Weddings & Events who were giddy with excitement at the idea of creating the tea party again. They pulled out all kinds of fantastic props to add to the mix with some great vintage items from Khun Jew from Ok Flower Samui. We found the perfect spot under a leaning monkey puzzle tree in the garden of my restaurant Rock Salt at the Yacht Club in Crystal Bay: And like that...the Mad Hatters Tea Party was born again! My culinary concoctions include multi flavored layered drinks, edible gardens, smoking tomato tea and 'magic' mushroom-woodland salad, scented with pine infused dry ice-fog. With several options for guests to choose from to feast upon; such as proper tea party fare i.e. dainty sandwiches, sausage rolls, French fancies and macaroons to more substantial feasts like Beef Wellington with all the trimmings, Lobster platters and my rather unconventional oyster platters plus many more. Jess and Jacqui have designed an incredible set, made many of the props by hand and created special unexpected surreal moments and activities to occur throughout the event as it unfolds. Without wanting to spoil any surprises. You can book your party to be held either at Rock Salt, a perfect venue with lots of nooks and crannies to explore, or you can book the party to be held at your villa or any other venue of your choice. SAINT OR SInNER? SINCE MANKIND’S SHORT TIME ON PLANET EARTH, THE MEASURE OF THE HUMAN CONDITION HAS BEEN GOVERNED BY THE LINES OF THE ETHICALLY NAY AND THE MORALLY GREY. RIGHT OR WRONG, HUMANITY HAS BEEN LOCKED IN THE ETERNAL BATTLE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. THESE SUPREME FORCES WAGE A WAR AROUND US EVERY DAY AND WE FEEL THEIR PRESENCE INSIDE US ALL FROM THE MOMENT WE RISE UNTIL WE FALL ASLEEP. AND SOMETIMES EVEN INTO OUR DREAMS. AND SINCE RECORDED HISTORY IS OFTEN TWISTED TO FIT THE BUSINESS INTERESTS OF THE INTERESTED BUSINESSES, IT’S HARD TO KNOW WHO REALLY WON EACH BATTLE. SOMETIMES WHAT WE ARE LED TO BELIEVE IS NOT EXACTLY WHAT IT SEEMS. HERE ARE FIVE EXAMPLES OF WHEN THE LINES GET A LITTLE BLURRY. words by Jeremy Briggs & Johnny McGeorge

GOD

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name etc. etc. It seems a silly question to ask whether Almighty God is a saint or a sinner. Surely he is purer than the driven snow and more saintly than all who have been canonized? So you’d think, yet there seem to be some discrepancies regarding his CV... The first questionable characteristic of His Holiness must surely be the whopping death toll he is accountable for. Let’s try and stick to the facts at our disposal here and give The Heavenly Father a fair trial. As a basis of comparison, God’s infernal nemesis Satan himself only managed to kill a paltry 10 people in The Bible. Not very diabolical but yes, The Devil only kills 10 people in the Bible... God, however, in pursuit of all things good and lovely and let’s not forget bright and beautiful, kills over 2 million humans and counting, let alone the other creatures great and small. Actually the creatures he generally left to their own devices, except for all but two animals from around 8 million recorded species that perished outside the comfort of Noah’s Ark in the mighty flood. One particular bible passage describes the Israelites questioning God’s ‘trigger happy’ vengeance, resulting in another 14,000 dead for doubting his omnipotent goodness. When he wasn’t busy with mass murder, God was playing wicked tricks on his most devout followers. In the book of Genesis, God commands Abraham, one of his star players, to kill his only son Isaac as a test of faith. A bit harsh. Nonetheless, Abraham takes Isaac to the altar and just as he is about to stab his baby boy, God pops out and tells Abraham he was only joking. Close call! Abraham left with no choice, grits his teeth and takes it on the chin, although I doubt he saw the funny side.

Despite supposedly inventing ever ything, including Saints and Sinners, God has a reputation for extreme actions. Some theologists have likened his Old Testament behavior to that of a petty, jealous teenager. Tantrums and fits of rage resulting in swarms, pestilence, fire, brimstone, wanton destruction and mass murder on a scale that puts Hitler and Stalin to shame. Fear him? YES! but he loves you, honest…

Verdict: erm…Saint?

Come on, its God. He might be watching. And He’s always up for a good smiting. While His mean streak and petty pursuits can be seen as excessive, He has made it very clear that we are in no position whatsoever to argue. So God gets away scot free once again. Besides, He’s chilled out a lot since the Old Testament.

loch ness monster When you think of the majestic Lochs of the Scottish Highlands, the first one to spring to mind is inevitably Loch Ness. And yes, a loch is just a Lake in a silly accent. Loch Ness is so large that it holds more water than all of the lakes and rivers in England and Wales put together and most of this vast inland body of water is an incredible 750 feet deep. But does anyone care about such impressive geographical stats? No, of course we don’t, we want to hear about what dark hideous creatures dwell in its depths! Namely the infamous, eponymous Loch Ness Monster. Likened to a prehistoric plesiosaur, the long-necked legend is estimated to be around 30 feet long with humped back and four flippers. A long-surviving object of interest, Nessie has been sighted off and on since the 7th Century, with increased regularity over the last 80 years or so. But what has this ambiguous amphibian done to deserve such unsolicited attention? This so called monster is in fact incredibly shy, having flummoxed even the most thorough of her hunters. The elusive beast remains at large and is well known among enthusiasts to rest in ‘Nessies Lair’ - the deepest part of the Loch at 812 feet deep. What harm can she really do down there? Nessie actually translates to ‘pure’ in ancient Celtic and this mythological marvel pumps in about £25 million a year into the local economy, tantalises tourists and keeps stuffed toy makers firmly in business. All this whilst hardly coming up for air. Generating an endless revenue stream yet shunning all media attention thus far, The Loch Ness Monster remains the best known Scot according to a 2006 survey - ahead of other Scots you haven’t heard of such as Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the bell) and Thomas Edison, inventor of light. And true to her cultural stereotypes, Nessie is the perfect example of Scottish invention: A world famous tourist attraction that cost…£0. That, to put it in perspective, is a lot less than Disneyland.

Verdict: Saint

Albeit most likely a fictional one.

PRINcess diana Princess Diana, Queen of Hearts, loved by many. Literally. Diana, Princess of Wales started off as unassuming socialite Lady Diana Spencer, until she piqued the interest of Charles Windsor, The Prince of Wales, humorless humdrum heir to the British throne. After a brief introduction to the Royal rabble, the demure Diana was swiftly married to become a fairytale Princess and future Queen Consort. It was hard to say no, but she could have… Wanting for nothing, this wholesome filly devoted a small amount of her time to charity and generally made people feel good with her charming ladylike grace, expensive hairdo and slew of sumptuous outfits. The People’s Princess touched the hearts of many, and other parts of quite a few, as the abounding rumours flew. It wasn’t long until Prince William was born, of what Diana later called ‘a loveless marriage’. William was, and still is, the ver y spit of his father Prince Charles and as King in the making, Wills maintains the Windsor stiff upper lip facade. Diana’s second born was Prince Harr y...What to say? Harr y distinctly lacked the looks of the Princes Charles and William and bore an increasingly striking resemblance to one of Diana’s close gentleman friends, rough and ready rouge-headed military man Captain James Hewitt. It was no surprise that later Diana revealed a long-standing affair with Hewitt but the claims of fatherhood to Harry were persistently denied as Hewitt maintains he always pulled out with military precision, followed by the assertion that their affair did not sync with Harry’s conception. However much the story cost, the media bought it.

It’s hard to really say what Princess Diana achieved in her time, other than some pretty impressive bed post notches. It’s also hard to understand how Mother Teresa, a woman who devoted her entire life to the needy, passed away on the same day without much fuss. But then she did die of natural causes and was not the speculative victim of an incredibly complex Royal murder conspiracy…theory.

Verdict: Saint

Giving to charity is easy when you have vast resources of money and time. Cheating on your husband is never looked upon lightly and should be considered a sin, unless of course you’ve been imprisoned, tormented, brutalized, threatened, isolated and intensely scrutinised for 15 years by your husband, his deplorable father and no-nonsense mother who just happens to be the reigning Queen of England.

george washington George Washington is the founding father everyone remembers, and not just for his wooden teeth. The first president of the USA lent his face to the $1 bill and his name to the Nation’s Capital. Widely revered as the greatest president to never be on TV, the esteemed Washington can do no wrong. At least not any more! Whilst heroically winning the war against the British, (who incidentally he fought for originally) it is said that Washington lost more battles than any other victorious general. However, his can-do attitude found him a Founding Father of the Land of the Free and thus immediately pronounced President of the United States of America, commanding a salary equal to 2% of the US economy. To make his mark in one of the most revered political positions in the world, George set his mind to cleaning up New York. And in the 1770’s, it wasn’t gentrification of the ghetto George had in mind, rather genocide of the indigenous tribes that had supported the British. Namely the Mohawks, Cayuga, Onondagas and Seneca tribes. Not one for half-baked plans, Washington’s orders to General John Sullivan on May 31, 1779 sounded exactly like this: “The immediate objectives are the total destruction and devastation of their settlements and the capture of as many prisoners of every age and sex as possible. It will be essential to ruin their crops in the ground and prevent their planting more.”

General Sullivan took no mercy destroying at least 40 villages, including burning their crops and homes. This destruction lead to over 5,000 Iroquois displaced and many starved or froze to death during the winter months. Subsequent campaigns persisted well into the 19th Century with around 18 million Native Americans killed in a quiet little holocaust that made the United States the awesome place it is today. Yee-haw indeed. After his share of the violence, good old George Washington returned home to make Moonshine and sell it before promptly dying, at which point the great man did what any other great man would do - and freed all 132 of his personal household slaves.

Verdict: Sinner

Of the most brutal and relentless order.

*Unless of course you’re reading government sanctioned history books then George Washington is an untouchable founding father, national hero, original patriot and one of them Good Ole’ Boys.

Sugar Remember your childhood, awash with delicious cotton candy, marshmallows, ice cream, chocolate bars and soda pops? All drenched in our most trusted and reliable friend; good old sugar. Oh how sweet and innocent you are, never failing to satiate our simple cravings. Even our parents love you dearly. You never cease to please, making mundane meals worth eating as your saccharine sympathy comforts us for dessert. But behind the candy coating, little did we know just how sinister and damaging your crystalline composition actually is. In fact sugar production has changed the course of human history in many ways, influencing the formation of colonies, the perpetuation of slavery, the transition to indentured labour, the migration of peoples, wars between sugar-trade – controlling nations in the 19th centur y, and the ethnic composition and political structure of the new world. If anyone cared to read the history of the sugar trade of the West Indies over 200 years since 1650, you’d be forgiven in thinking that sugar was a euphemism for the most potent and prolific narcotic known to man. And yet ironically, you wouldn’t be far off. Legendary poet Ogden Nash once said that ‘Candy is Dandy, but liquor is quicker’. This may be true, but alcohol, cocaine and heroin are mere addiction footnotes compared to the mighty sugar. Recent studies conclude traditional sugar, a white crystal refined from a plant *ahem*, is as much as eight times more addictive than cocaine - and lab rats have been shown to give up intraveinous cocaine supplies in favour of sweet, sugary treats. Fact.

Just a spoonful of sugar won’t do any harm, will it? Just try quitting and see how much your life improves. If you can that is. Currently, around five spoons a day total sugar intake is considered healthy. That’s combined sugar from everything you consume, not just five teaspoons per day…Now consider that a single can of coke contains around nine teaspoons. A Starbucks caramel frappe contains as much sugar as a liter of coke. So your morning coffee already exceeds 5 times more than your recommended daily intake. Add to that any other soft drinks, fruit juice, cereal, biscuits, fast food, processed foods and pretty much everything in the supermarket that wasn’t covered in soil the day before. We’re talking surreptitious global addiction here. In fact, sugar is so sinister that it is the ONLY ingredient not disclosed on nutritional value charts of ANY commercial foodstuff. Despite its compulsively compelling ubiquity, sugar ain’t good for you. In fact sugar is directly responsible for a dictionary of diseases covering obesity, diabetes, brain problems of all kinds (including ADHD type behavior), heart disease, cancer and basically sickly sweetened death. Not great. And nigh on impossible to give up. In fact it’s probably easier to go cold turkey from a full blown heroin addiction than it is to stop eating sugar, even if just a spoonful does help the medicine go down.

Verdict: Sinner

The bit ter truth is that sugar is by far the most damaging component of the human diet, labelled by Paul van der Velpen, head of Amsterdam’s health services as “The most dangerous Drug Of The Times”. But like any drug addict rationalising their next filthy hit, surely just one more chocolate brownie or little slice of blueberry cheesecake won’t hurt. Will it?

This is Acoustic When I heard of this acoustic album I had visions of yet another mind numbing production of covers. Mediocre singers performing a once-excellent song slightly less well as the original artist. Hotels have been milking this nonsense for years, showing they have zero musical creativity – it’s a bit of a cop-out really. To my surprise this compilation is made by the original artists and some of the tracks are in their original form because they were acoustic in the first place. Like Lumineers ‘Hoy Hey’ which is the soundtrack to YouTube’s mix adverts, unsurprisingly they had to pick something excellent because this advert is very annoying. Others like Jessie J’s brilliant ‘Price Tag’ have a different twist which is certainly what I’m looking for in an acoustic album. Saying that, Passeneger’s ‘Let Her Go’ is also quite brilliant - I can and I have listened to it over and over. Overall it’s a great album and perfect for entertaining.

Kisstory 2015 Kiss Radio has always been edgy. As a pirate radio station it was pioneering underground music with its urban style. As a regular listener in the pirate years, I can clearly remember the day they turned legal. At the time they had an estimated 500,000 listeners with an incredible array of DJ’s on their books – it was a consortium of ten of them that actually owed the station. Tours and club nights synonymous with the brand are excellent and this album has all of these flavours. Split into 3 CDs of UK Garage, RnB & Hip Hop and Old Skool Party House, they are covering all bases. While the tracks are strong, I can’t help feeling that 3 albums were a tad unnecessary for a retrospective album. Less quantity and more quality may be in order.

The Chemical Brothers Born in the Echoes “We’re just really into making funny sounds and putting them into some kind of order that makes sense. Not every song has to be the meaning of life” That certainly rings true with this album. Big beats, trip hop, festival bangers. This is a huge album and there’s plenty of funny sounds and huge beats. I can’t say I’m taken with all of it. But I can see the attraction. The noughties saw the Chems start to disappear into mediocrity but with their 2010 album and again this - 5 years later - they sound as fresh as ever. ‘Just Bang’ has the Drums and Bassline that would shake any room - a crossover tribal techno track, but the stand out tune for me has to be ‘Go’ ft Q-Tip. Utterly accessible it will be rinsed the world over this summer and beyond. This album has legs and the Chemicals Brothers have definitely returned home.

Ministry of Sound Ibiza Sessions 2015 Another MOS compilation…..they are putting so many out there. Ibiza is a favorite, so naturally Ministry are going to have an annual album to celebrate their residency on the white isle. This year MOS have a residency at Ocean Beach Club, an RnB weekly event, though this album is more about the music we know them best for, a large cross-section of all things house. The first CD belts straight into some sublime house followed by an EDM section (of which I am no great fan although this was more than tolerable). Because they covering so many bases musically, the CD moves back down again into deep house – which begs the question would you ever hear a set like this live? Unlikely. The second CD is more stable, crossing mini genres but keeping it all nice and tidy, more deep and underground. This is definitely worth a download if you’re heading on a party holiday to the Med. The tracks will come up whist you’re partying and this is ideal to have back at the ranch to get you in the mood before going out. It might raise the roof, but it’s far from groundbreaking .

Based on the twelve animal signs on the lunar calendar, the Chinese Zodiac brings us our star signs in beast form... With Thailand steeped in Chinese tradition, each issue we will look at the Chinese Zodiac and find out what advantages and disadvantages there are to being a Snake, a Dragon or even the unloved Rat! This issue we take a good look at the character of the Dog. THE DOG Dogs are loyal and honest, amiable and kind, cautious and prudent. Due to bearing a strong sense of loyalty and sincerity, Dogs will do everything for the person who they think is most important. As Dogs are not good at communication, it is difficult for them to convey their minds to others. Thus Dogs tend to leave others the impression of a stubborn personality. Born with a good nature, Dogs do not tend to be criminals or seek dishonest gain. They just need a quiet life and a good family, and thus forget the ugliness and evil on earth. Dogs are always ready to help others, and do not care about their own interests, but if they find themselves betrayed by cunning people they will feel shocked and hurt. AS LOYAL AS... Due to loyalty in personality, Dogs tend to choose a career based on the principle of serving others. Dogs are seen as valuable employees, as they work heart and soul at their tasks. They are easy-going and kind, and always are ready to alleviate the workload of others, which make them very popular in their work circle.
