Publisher’s Note I don’t know why, I’m really feeling alive and feeling great today. Maybe it’s because I had 10 hrs of peaceful sleep now our magazine has been completed? This last week has been hectic to say the least, some days just didn’t have enough hours, but even though chaotic, every single day was exhilarating.

Someone once said that every day is a gift, and that is why it is called The Present. We can use The Present any way we want. The choice is entirely ours. We can choose to bury it under the past. Or we can choose to open it to find out what it holds for us.We can choose to ignore it. Or we can choose to place it on the mantelpiece of our lives. We can choose to smother it with our negative emotions, fears and prejudices. Or we can choose to use it as a stepping stone to reach higher goals. One Coast Magazine is that huge part of my life and although at times can feel overwhelming it’s something that brings me much happiness and contentment. Our team work as one and strive to bring you the brightest newest articles, which we all hope you enjoy. This edition is bumper packed with excitement and we join Tatiana Ten with her Art Therapy, we go backstage with Cara Ditta-in host from the Entertainment Channel and star in The Apartment Season 5 and we look at the Royal Enfield Himalaya’s, built like a gun motorcycle for the mountains. We’ve even an incredible camper that wouldn’t go amiss in the zombie apocalypse. For those already interested in the front cover we showcase Ermanno Scervino’s new collection, and for those seeking to improve their lives, business and soul we meet Rodney King at Tree Roots Retreat and go through his EmbodiedMBA mindfulness in action course. I think we have a little something for everyone and with that I’d like to wish you all a great day, enjoy your reading and take time for yourselves to do what makes your soul happy.

Celebrating Contemporary
female beauty Shedding light on a portrait of women, the Ralph & Russo Autumn Winter 17-18 collection takes inspiration from the identity and natural beauty captured by the grand masters Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton & Norman Parkinson. Enthused by light and animation, this season’s palette is iridescent; a flash of ice mints and pearlescent lavenders, aqua blue double satins and crystal mesh in rose-gold hues. Embroidery is crystallized like a photograph in time, whilst motion is captured in the movement of devoured white feathers, fluid draping, floor sweeping trains, ribbons of metallic chainmail and wide leg trouser suits.
12
Capturing contemporary female beauty through the lens of Creative Director, Tamara Ralph, the collection is an immense testament to the values that both photography and couture share without ever mentioning it; the unique ability to emulate an individual’s personality and soul. O N E CO A S T

Elsa Schiaparelli had a circle of women revolving around her. Inspiring and inspired, they were muses and often partners of great artists. Sometimes artists themselves, they helped shape the destiny of their lovers or protégés as much as they forged their own fate. Endlessly drawing on their inner strength, these women led enthralling, modern lives. Rebelling against the scourge of conservatism and pushing social boundaries, this feminine society was all about self-expression. Challenging set ideas allows a breath of fresh air - like oxygen to renew your inner soul. A thrust of lightness crystallizes a style in motion. Calling on sensuality where the threads of merging intensity and freshness are woven. A new femininity gives life to a strong yet delicate personality.
This season’s silhouettes seem to defy gravity.Their exquisite refinement exhales pure and subtle sophistication. The body is draped with infinite grace. Dresses that are seemingly deconstructed look like abstract compositions. Jackets with natural shoulder lines hint at Picasso while silk chiffon set in colours blocks evokes Rothko. Trompe l’oeil belts, collars and bracelets pepper a graceful work with tension. Gowns are made of layered silk gauze embroidered with glass tubes, puzzles of cobweb-like lace, airy organza and tulle ruché.Velvet dévoré and pleated lamé tartan add nerve to an ethereal equation. Prismatic light is rendered through transparency and the infinite reflections of Swarovski crystal, vinyl and iridescent embroideries. Opalescent soft hues contrast with splashes of black, white and shocking pink and jewellery shaped in padlocks, pierced hearts and suns. www.schiaparelli.com/en

body&mindhot stuff It sometimes takes time to become timeless. A watchmaking and stylistic revolution at its launch in 1977, the Bulgari Bulgari watch has since become a reference model. A sign of recognition among elegant ladies of Italian high society in the late 1970s, it has since returned to the forefront on their daughters’ wrists – to the point of becoming a style factor and a rallying point for a new generation of young women who revel in hunting it out within their parents’ collections and displaying it proudly on social networks. Bulgari is offering them an even more special treat this year, with a dedicated feminine version of the Bulgari Bulgari watch, enabling them to enliven every outfit with a splash of colour. The new Bulgari Bulgari naturally adopts the purest watchmaking principles by enabling simple and accurate reading of the hours, minutes and seconds. High fashion meets contemporary design Its singularity lies as much in its style imbued with a timeless architecture recalling the columns of Ancient Rome, as in its extremely current, lively appeal, making it both a fashion accessory and a contemporary design piece. It now comes in three sizes – 26, 33 and 37 mm in diameter – fitted with alligator leather straps in vivid colours inspired by the precious stones for which Bulgari is renowned. Each strap is easily interchangeable thanks to the system available on the straps of this new collection, so as to match every style and meet every expectation. Simple yet sophisticated, the cases are available in steel, pink gold/steel and pink gold versions. Several dial colour variations, and a version with gemset bezel, round off the many possibilities of adorning the wearer’s day. The result is an exquisitely playful and joyful way of approaching feminine watchmaking, as only Bulgari knows how, endowed with a fresh appeal that is both charmingly elegant and unmistakably Italian. TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS BVlgari BVlgari LadY Case, dial and strap 26, 33 and 37mm cases in steel, steel/18kt pink gold and 18kt pink gold according to the version; crown engraved with the double brand logo and set with a pink stone cabochon; water-resistant to 30m; dials in white mother-of-pearl with diamond-hour-markers or sunburst satin-brushed brown lacquered depending on the version. British Lion at Samujana Fresh off the frenzy of the New Zealand Lions tour, British and Irish Lions centre Jonathan Joseph (JJ) visited Thailand for a much needed and well-deserved holiday retreat at Samujana, a luxury villa residence in Koh Samui. One Coast Magazine caught up with him to ask him about his stay, his thoughts on Thailand and what a celebrity Rugby player needs to do to relax.

You’ve recently finished a Lions tour. What was the highlight of this tour? It was an honour to be presented with the jersey for the first time, but I also think getting to know the team. Meeting new people, getting to know some of the players from other clubs and countries better. Everyone told me before I went that on the Lions Tour I’d build friendships for life and it’s very true. We’re so glad you chose Thailand as a place to get your relaxation, what is your favourite aspect of the Kingdom? It’s been an absolutely amazing trip. I don’t always relax on holiday, but it’s been easy to here. The views and hospitality have been incredible. We hear you stayed at the super swanky Samujana Villas? How was it? Awesome. Beautiful. Special. I was overwhelmed when I arrived. The villa was beautiful and I’ve never seen a view like it. Genuinely had the best time and was so well looked after. Everyone was really friendly and gave us great local advice to ensure you made the most of our time here. Phuket or Samui, which was your favourite? That’s tough. Possibly Samui as it really did take my breath away. But that said, our time in Phuket was really good too! We loved seeing you at the Barnhem Home for kids. What inspires you to help kids? This was probably the best memory I’ll have from this trip. Everyone at Barnhem was so welcoming and the children were something else. So, loving, happy we were there and loved getting involved in rugby and the games we played with them. The team there are amazing - I feel really lucky to have been invited there. Do you see Rugby being as popular as football here in Thailand? Rugby has a lot less exposure here so probably not for a while. But there are local teams so there’s the appetite.
Who inspires you? Kids who are overcoming adversity. It makes you take a step back when you are reminded of how little some have but the enjoyment and love they still give out. Also, my parents. They’ve always supported and encouraged me to do my best. What is your guilty pleasure? A good film or a box set. We also saw that you visited the new Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. How was it? Really fun. They’re huge!! I really enjoyed it, and luckily got a new Samsung phone just before I left which has an awesome camera. I’m not the best photographer but it helped me get some amazing pictures of the elephants. Really beautiful. What advice would you give to people who are planning on visiting Thailand and want to ride elephants? I’d recommend they make sure they visit the right places and just respect and appreciate the animals. How many hours per day do you train? It depends. Pre season will ramp up and we can train from 3-6 hours. Training ranges from gym to sprinting to teamwork. Are there other sports you love? I enjoy basketball and there have been more and more games coming over to the UK. I don’t get to go very often but I do like to watch it when I can. I also love tennis. I played a lot when I was younger and got to a good level before focusing on rugby.
Rugby is such a physical sport, how important is it to be able to unwind, relax and allow the body to recover at the end of a hard season? It’s as important to rest your mind as much as your body. It was obviously a long season with the Lions Tour at the end too, so getting away, switching the phone off and just chilling out has been the perfect end to the season. Will you visit us again? Definitely. It’s been an amazing holiday and I’ve seen so much, been so well looked after. Thailand is very special.

Angelic collection from
Rami Al Ali Under the appreciation of the influential fashion elite in the French Capital, the world-renowned Syrian designer Rami Al Ali Capital presented his AW 2017/18 couture collection in the sublime setting of the Hotel Ritz Paris. With a vision of elegance and creativity, Al Ali looked to the historic beauty of the Angel artwork by Abbott Handerson Thayer to provide a fusion of innocence, technique and grandeur. Inspired by the serenity of the Angel painting, and majestic wings representing both strength and fragility, the collection held sway with its array of artistic composition of visual elements. Al Ali looked to the wings of an angel as the symbol, conveying the embodiment of feminine virtue and aesthetic splendor. Devoting a stunning configuration of colors and exhibiting material complexities in both silhouettes and ornate details, the collection touched upon the beautiful, intricate qualities of the modern woman; illuminating both power and delicacy as symbolized by an angel. Luxurious fabrics are gathered in complex undulating forms on an array of structured and softer lines with tulle, organza, piquÊ and gazar; imitating the feather-like layers of wings whilst handcrafted embellishments adorn the pieces, implementing understated feminine charm and powerful composure. Shades of geranium and claret red dominate the darker shades of the colour palette, whilst mauve morn, blush and silver pink comprise the lighter hues, offering a striking contrast, and embodying the delicacy, grace and force of the wings of an angel. Continuing to maintain the signature Al Ali feminine sensuality, he made sure architecturally designed structures are combined with flowing silhouettes, reflecting modern sensibilities and echoing a paragon of virtue and forte. Integrating a variety of complex design features to each garment or styling each piece with tasteful shoe designs from Christian Louboutin whatever it is, he marvelously created a sense of elegance and tranquility throughout the collection. All in all, Rami Al Ali’s unveiling innovative edit demonstrated how his combination of creativity, unique craftsmanship and historic creation can be conveyed through the art of couture.

Merging of two cultures in a spectacular form Paris once again experienced a glamorous show of couture extravaganza at the prestigious hotel Salomon de Rothschild as Guo Pei presented her FW17-18 Couture Collection here for the fourth time. It was primarily a symbolic homage to Haute Couture which was reckoned to be the theme of this season. “For long, I’ve been using my designs and my work to express my feelings, my dreams, and speak from the bottom of my heart. However, this season, I decided to just focus on the clothing itself,” says Guo Pei. The grand era of Haute Couture is not that far away from us yet it’s getting increasingly strange to us day after day. Guo Pei created these 43 looks in the most sincere reverence to the remaining innocence of that age. Industrialization and fast fashion drifted us away from the most beautiful crafts and that elegant gorgeous era. The designs, stripped off exaggeration, with less affectation, combine the most delicate process and the most classic lines for the purest beauty of the craft to honor the peak age of Haute Couture. Guo Pei used the most fashionable fabrics, privileged a classic line with delicate fabrics to enhance the feminine silhouette. Metallic textural luster and varying colors bring visual enrichment. This season, complex constructions and layering bring an illusional aspect yet emphasizing the freshness of the silhouettes. Embroidery and beading combined with sophisticated craftsmanship is Guo Pei’s signature.Three-dimensional embroideries combined with delicate ornaments enhance the rhythmical image of the collection and also a vivid feminine charm. For this collection, Guo Pei has been working hand in hand with Caroline Scheufele, Co-President and Artistic Director of Chopard, in order to present their ideal vision of Couture and High Jewelry. Since their first meeting in Paris in 2015, they struck a chord and an immediate friendship was born. Their common artistic taste as well as the pursuit of beauty and ultimate design and craftsmanship led them to imagine perfect four-hand collaboration.

In this synchronized design process, they successfully completed a blend of Chinese and Western cultures and aesthetics as well as the perfect fusion between fashion and jewelry. Guided by prolific creativity, a tireless quest for perfection and an aspiration towards the sublime, Caroline Scheufele has given rise to a vast and opulent collection of High Jewelry themed around a dreamy vision of Asia.“Through a joint runway show with Guo Pei, an innovative and promising form of feminine solidarity is expressed: women are never as strong as when they combine their talents,” says Caroline Scheufele. This fabulous collection proves that she does what her heart says. “I don’t follow trends or try to compete with anyone. Everything I do stems from following my passion in its entirety,” says Guo Pei. www.guo-pei.fr

MINDFULNESS IN ACTION EmbodiedMBA One Coast Magazine were fortunate enough to spend a few days with Mr Rodney King at the tranquil and beautiful Tree Roots Retreat in Rayong recently and thoroughly discuss his Embodied MBA program that is conducted in collaboration with Tree Roots Retreat where they offer a 5-day EmbodiedMBA intensive package. This option is great for Corporate Team Building and Executive Teams and One Coast Magazine was onsite to find out more. EmbodiedMBA integrates the science of mindfulness, with inner game management tools, delivered through an action learning experience — designed to help you, your staff, team and organization to achieve more focus, presence and resilience. Success Is an Inside Job The world is changing at an unprecedented pace. Not only are organisations, but team leaders are struggling to keep up with these changes. While management may ‘think’ about strategies and tactics that will drive organisational success, action is still required to succeed. Action by its very nature requires team members to go from merely thinking, to becoming embodied agents that actively engage in the organisational landscape they find themselves in. As organisations and the world increases its pace of change, more and more demands are being placed on each person. These increases in demands, create an inner unbalance, instability, and turbulence, that tends to overpower a person’s ability to act effectively in achieving both organisational as well as personal goals. Said another way, even though team members may have the necessary skills to achieve what they have been asked, the constant increase in demands placed upon them from inside and outside of organisational life, creates an increase in demands on their inner world. What emerges is a loss of equanimity, that stops even the most competent among team members from fully realising their full potential. Working with team members that feel this inner defeat (even though we as leaders, and management know they have everything they need to achieve success), can be unsettling, even defeating. Organisations often respond with more training, but this training almost never targets the real problem of unsuccessful performance — a person’s inner game.

The truth is, almost all training, and almost all learning presented both in organisations and higher educational institutions focus exclusively on brain smarts. Consider for example the lauded MBA degree. A graduate level degree achieved at a university or college that provides theoretical and practical training to help graduates gain a better understanding of general business management functions.Yet still, none of this learning encompasses inner management training. The truth is our biggest obstacle to success is how we tend to the inside. This is not just what is happening in our heads, but in our body, and spirit as well. It is our embodied inner opponent, not necessarily our lack of head knowledge that poses the greatest risk to our defeat. Yet, ironically, no one is ever given a class in how to achieve inner excellence — arguably the most important skill set to develop, to achieve success in business and life. The Embodied Mind Body-Accelerator program, is a new kind of ‘MBA’. It is a ‘graduate’ level inner training program that focuses first and foremost on embodied game development. It is designed to enable team members, management and leaders to learn key insights in managing their inner landscape — thus enabling them to find inner balance to fully engage within the frantic organisational world they now find themselves in. The EmbodiedMBA is built upon sound research, empirically tested and designed for real world application. The EmbodiedMBA is a process that can be taught as a stand-alone workshop either to individuals or teams in organisations. EmbodiedMBA easily integrates into any coaching or performance framework and methodology. This means the EmbodiedMBA can integrate into any organisational performance structure already in place for team mem-
bers. In addition, while the EmbodiedMBA is first delivered through a somatic (i.e., embodied) based process, many of the principles taught, can easily be transferred and or expanded further into other coaching methodologies. In fact, what makes the EmbodiedMBA so powerful is that the tools and strategies taught are meant to be both practiced, and applied within a persons’ life and work environment. Not only is EmbodiedMBA delivered from a practical base, it is designed to be applied in practice in life and career. All the Benefits of Meditation and More - NO Cushion Required! According to the Cranfield University School of Management and The Institute for Employment Studies (IES), for sustainable health and performance across an organisation, mindfulness training needs to target change readiness through mindful working at the team level. This process can be started by delivering mindfulness training to entire workplace teams (including the team leader) and by including a range of team level mental fitness techniques. A team-based design and delivery format creates the platform from which teams develop the capabilities required to embrace increased volatility, transparency, and complexity within organisational settings. The embodied fitness techniques that are taught in the EmbodiedMBA experience are designed to not only boost individual, but equally team level performance. However, we go beyond teaching the science of mindfulness, showing participants how to engage their entire ’embodied intelligence’ to achieve peak performance at work (and life). O N E CO A S T
41
An Example Teaching EmbodiedMBA to Leaders When teaching the EmbodiedMBA experience to leaders — they all agree that fast accurate decision making is crucial in their professional lives. In martial arts, fast accurate decisions are important to success in engaging a moving, unpredictable target. We found that if we simply teach leaders ‘intellectually’ how to make fast decisions, they will be less likely to try those new skills out in the crucible of work — where wrong decisions could have catastrophic consequences. Teaching inner management tools through martial arts drills, not only simulates ‘real life’ experiences, it allows leaders to build inner confidence in the embodied tools being developed. Crucially the experiential experience of the EmbodiedMBA, allows leaders to test the results of the experience, as well as pause, reflect and restart — before applying those skills with confidence in their professional lives. The EmbodiedMBA Philosophy Ever since René Descartes in the seventeenth century separated the mind from what the body does (dualism) — we have in the West been largely dominated by the idea that our mind is distinct and functions independently from our body.We have as Aposhyan in Natural Intelligence notes, for centuries reduced the experience of our body to a mechanical one. In other words, if it doesn’t appear in the thinking mind, then it does not exist in reality. The EmbodiedMBA experience throws this conventional way of thinking on its head. We encouraged participants to go beyond reason and rationality, and to connect with their entire self in a way that brings their natural intelligence to life. The underlying premise behind the EmbodiedMBA experience is that who we are on the inside (not just in our head, but all of us) determines success in life and work. EmbodiedMBA is an embodied process that recognises that our behaviour arises as an embodied agent actively engaged in the world. Thus, the kind of felt relationship one has to one’s body, is a precondition for behaviours that result in success, be that in work, or in life. The reality is, but often never taught, that success at work (and life) is directly related to a person’s awareness of, and ability to manage, what is happening within their own bodies (crucially in high stress encounters).

O N E CO A S T
What We Teach in The EmbodiedMBA Experience. 1.THE WABI SABI OF PEAK PERFORMANCE In life, we want everything to be perfect. In fact, most people don’t try to achieve anything because they are waiting for perfect to happen. Probably the biggest lesson Rodney King creator of EmbodiedMBA ever learned was that, while you are waiting for things to be just right, life happens. The sooner you come to grips with imperfection, the sooner you can achieve personal and professional success. In this section of training, we will take participants through a series of drills that will highlight the paradox of imperfection, that is needed for perfect peak performance to happen. 2. ZEN MIND, WARRIOR BODY Thinking isn’t inherently bad, but what a person focuses on can be. Reflecting on past mistakes, or planning are crucial for long term achievement. But when it comes to performance, in the moment, when it matters most, past and future can get a person into trouble. When a person’s thoughts are moving into the past or the future, they can easily get caught up in a mental vortex, and spin out of control. Most importantly they lose contact with the present moment, the only moment they can fully respond with clarity. In this section of training we teach specific thinking drills that will enable participants to harness the power and clarity of present moment thinking. 3. HOW YOU SHOW UP IN THE WORLD MATTERS (MORE THAN YOU THINK) How you hold your body, not only changes your physiology, it also changes how you think and feel about yourself. How you show up in the world then, matters more than you ‘think’. Scientists have discovered that some very simple gestures, such as how you shape your mouth, can affect your mental attitude. Bottom line, the fact is while our minds and bodies are different, they always go together. In this section of training we introduce participants to Attitude Embodied, and why it is essential for peak performance in any endeavour. 4. MINDFULNESS-IN-ACTION This is the backbone of the EmbodiedMBA experience. In this section, we introduce participants to mindfulness-in-action. Mindfulness is a state of being where you can be present without judging the out-
come of your experience. It involves not becoming attached to negative thinking and emotions, and the stories that have always held a person back from achieving success in their career and life. The outcome is the ability to be fully present, which then leads to what we call embodying a fluid mind. This is an embodied state that will allow a person to take on the martial arts of everyday life more skilfully and win! 5. BREATHING LIFE INTO PERFORMANCE Breathing shouldn’t only be something a person does simply to stay alive, but rather, and equally important something they need in order to act. More and more, the medical community is realising that sympathetic dominance (fear/aggression response) underlies many modern-day maladies, including anxiety and hypertension. While all the variables of the root cause of sympathetic dominance are not completely understood, one root causes is, in fact, suboptimal breathing. This section of training looks at how participants can speak to their nervous system so that they can better manage those moments of intense stress. 6. ROLLING WITH LIFE’S PUNCHES True success in life is one’s ability to bounce back from setbacks. But it is also about putting in the work. In this final section of training we focus on showing participants how to build resilience, surviving the hustle and why we believe they need more challenge play in their life to truly be successful.

Wellness for the Soul
Visual Medicine
A
rt Therapy Sessions by Tatiana for those who need to speak and express themselves by using a profoundly simple technique, where the images are not painted but being born by scooping acrylic paint onto moistened watercolour paper. Tatiana’s passion for Art Therapy has started a few years ago while she was working at Serenity Rehab Center in Koh Samui, where she used the creative process of making Art as an expressive therapy which helped to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Later, Tatiana explored the other aspects of Art Therapy using this simple but radical technique. The beauty of it is anyone can try. The paintings are created without a brush by scooping acrylic paint onto a watercolour paper that has been wet, allowing the images to essentially flow and paint themselves. In a sense, Visual Medicine images are born, rather than painted. It’s like a moving meditation in paint, where a creative paradigm shift takes place; from trying to be creative to naturally being creative in the moment. The paintings that arise are not only aesthetically surprising, they are also templates of communicative complexity that reflect and express the underlying forms and patterns existing in all nature. In turn, these images give a visual access to the vastness of possibility within your own emotional and spiritual nature.
body&mindwellness
Dialoguing with Paint During these sessions, Tatiana could see that creating Art without any judgement could help people to use the Art not only as means of self-expression but also as ways to self-healing and self-discovery where they could explore the facets of their personalities they never knew existed. Now Tatiana is certain that Art Therapy can be beneficially used for a purpose of active mediation and that people can unblock and enrich their lives and their own creativity through Art therapy and the best part about it is that no painting experience is needed. Another addition Tatiana decided to make after her recent Yoga Teacher Training completion is to add some yoga sequences to the Art Therapy session which would only complement this amazing creative spiritual experience. Art Therapy Sessions or Visual Medicine™ is a radically easy painting and writing process originated and developed by Suzette Clough (Founder of Visual Medicine™). This technique opens a deep conversation with yourself through working with paint in a radical and unpremeditated way. It offers the surprise and joy of simply playing with paint, harnessing the power of spontaneous creativity and the unconscious.Yet it also opens a gateway into a dialogue with the paintings themselves through writing and self-enquiry and through conversation, which can be extra-ordinarily supportive, profound and revelatory.Tatiana will guide you into your creative mind so you can re-imagine, problem solve and transform. You will learn to create Art without judgement. Use Art as a means for self-healing and self-discovery. Explore facets of your personality you never knew existed. Use Art for active mediation. Art Therapy can be used to improve and enlighten physical, mental and emotional well-being. No previous painting experience needed. Tatiana’s Art Therapy Sessions are often explained as being magical, bringing forgotten but important information back into consciousness. Session times are between 60-90 minutes depending on a group size of 2-8 people.

BACKSTAGE with
CARA DITTA-IN For our About Her feature in One Coast Magazine we are fortunate to catch up with the very busy Cara Ditta-in, most will know her from the Entertainment Channel and The Apartment Season 5, of course we had to find out more.
Can you please tell us a little about yourself and your family? I was born in Bangkok, Thailand in a small family of 4. Mom, dad, older sister and me. My dad is a Thai Ambassador for The Ministry of Foreign Affairs so our family travels regularly. My mom is a housewife and she cooks three meals a day! That’s probably one of the reasons why I love cooking! When I was 20 I started working in the Film Industry and started traveling abroad. I recently moved back to Bangkok and started hosting the television show called IN Channel as an Entertainment Host and I guess everything started to take off from there. Tell us more about your work in the Entertainment Industry? I’ve been hosting the Entertainment Channel for a while, and after thinking I needed something more stable I applied for a job at Ce La Vi Bangkok. I’ve now been with Ce La Vi Bangkok – Club Manager for almost 2 years now . It’s been such an exciting road! I’ve recently finished filmed The Apartment Season 5 which was film in Jahor Bahru and aired in all Asia Pacific. It was such an intense reality show but I’ve gained so much from it as well as new friends.

It does seem you work 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, do you have any free time or hobbies? Oh em gee! Yes!!! I feel like the world is on top on me and I’m paddling most of the time! Haha! As a Club Manager, and juggling castings and other day time jobs, I feel like I never get enough sleep so when I do have time to sleep, I get 10 hours in easily! Which doesn’t really help. Working night shifts is not easy as well as dealing with problems. My lovely boss told me to not fret and every time that I feel stress, just look around and see everyone smiling and having fun and knowing I’m a part of that. On my day off I spend my time with my other half by the pool and spending time with my lovely cat and every now and then hang out with my other extended friends/family at Opus! That’s relaxing enough for me! Do you spend most of your time in Thailand? I live in Thailand, it’s such a lovely country and I’ve been around the world but there’s no place like home. You seem to be successful in everything you do, where does your drive & enthusiasm come from? I’ve always been a go getter, and I never really compare myself to others. My mom would never praise me, never say it’s good enough, but always tell me I could do better, it can be better. She always taught me do everything on my own and accomplish everything alone no matter what it is, and that drive is what’s called “success”. I’ve always been pushed to win and challenge myself to always do better and get better. Every month, I challenge myself to do one thing that I couldn’t yet do so at least in a year I get to learn 12 new things! LOL Where are you heading now and what do you hope to achieve? I am always striving for something new, and to challenge myself for something else in life. I don’t like to sit around and wait for things to happen but to make them happen. There’s no such thing as failure if you try. Right now, I am just planning for the next opportunity and to go for it! I believe women are blessed in so many ways and we can do anything if we put our minds into it, so now I will make things happen.

Coldwell Banker in Phuket Taking Luxury Property to a whole new level

focusabout him
In this issue of About Him, One Coast catches up with Mr Norbert Witthinrich. Norbert, a long-term Expat in Phuket has just opened a Real Estate Agency for the famous and well respected Coldwell Banker Global Luxury, of course we had to find out more.
You have been on the island for a long time. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what landed you in Phuket? I have been in Phuket since 1997 so you are right, I am a true vintage islander but I haven’t forgotten about my roots. I was born in Flensburg, North of Germany. I enjoyed water sports and sunny weather as a kid but it is only much later that I decided the cold weather wasn’t for me. I started my career in IT and found out that connecting with others was more important to me than monitoring or fixing system performances so I looked at other opportunities, which led me to run my very first property business. Like many it was a holiday to Thailand that got me hooked and to start a whole new life in this part of the world. What has kept you busy over the years? A short venture related to chartering followed by a different activity managing my first real estate agency, family, friends and the perks of living the island life while enjoying the opportunity to travel occasionally. In a nutshell‌life! O N E CO A S T
51
You made the news recently by launching Coldwell Banker Global Luxury in Phuket. What is the story behind this new operation? I wanted to sign a contract with an established international Real Estate brand for a long time. I first became aware of Coldwell Banker during one of many trips to the U.S. to visit my daughter who is attending High School in Florida. After that I kept noticing branches in many prime locations so I decided one day to push the doors of several agencies to ask a few questions. Every time, the teams were enthusiastic about working with the brand. By chance or fate, when I arrived back in Thailand, I spotted an ad at the US embassy mentioning that Coldwell Banker was looking to open a branch in Phuket…the rest is history. After some negotiations, Coldwell Banker opened in Phuket in May 2017. How is Coldwell Banker different from other real estate agents on the island? Coldwell Banker is no ordinary real estate agency for a reason. Many reasons in fact. For a start, the brand is very well established with a strong history anchored in more than a century of innovation. Second its 3000 offices in 50 countries and 88,000 affiliated agents deliver a whooping turnover of USD 134 Million per day illustrating what reach and brand power can achieve. This is important for our clients as our strong network and Multiple Listing System enable us to get their properties in front of affluent buyers globally. Through its 360 degrees borderless marketing approach including print media, social media, mobile, public relations and a dedicated digital suite, Coldwell Banker is setting the standard of how the world’s finest estates are bought and sold today. As an example, it’s social media presence with the likes of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube… generated an astounding 79 million engagements with brand content last year. In addition, we bring to the market outstanding insider knowledge of the island with 20 years of experience as a local realtor (previously Sea-Property) along with a strong desire to exceed expectations and create exceptional experiences for all our clients. We pride ourselves in knowing each property inside out and on establishing lasting relationships and many friendships too along the way. In summary, we believe that with a solid base, global connections, luxury leadership, marketing excellence, knowledge and bespoke customer service, the extraordinary is possible. What was your biggest success/deal during your career? My biggest success is to be here sitting in front of you and smiling after twenty years in the business. I have signed many exciting deals over the years but I view true success as the sum of all the small and big things that we are able to achieve as a team each day. 52
O N E CO A S T
What did you learn from your 20 years of experience as a realtor in Phuket? I learned that to survive in a dynamic and volatile environment, it is important to build a positive team, solve for customers, be ready to reinvent yourself and love what you do. How do you see the Phuket real estate market evolving in the future? I am confident for 2017-2018. The government is investing in infrastructure, several new projects and hotels are in the pipeline, new malls will be ready to open soon etc. The buyer demographics have changed and there are challenges but there are also clear opportunities in the market. We are seeing a lot of interest at all levels even if the lower priced housing options continue to top sales in terms of volume. We are expecting an additional boost from joining the Coldwell Banker Global Luxury program through unique access to a large database of wealthy clients seeking the type of lifestyle and infrastructure that Phuket offers. What top tips would you give first time buyers? 1. Get to know the Island 2. Define your requirements 3. Talk to a reputable and knowledgeable agent 4. View a selection of properties 5. Found your dream house? Hire a trusted lawyer to conduct due diligence and review the contract.
How do you start and end your day? I am a very early bird. I love to wake up at 5am and get a coffee on my terrace before I go through my emails followed by some light exercise, breakfast with family, a trip to bring the kids to school and the office. I enjoy spending evenings surrounded with family and friends for a sunset drink or around a tasty dinner. Are you a family man or a businessman? Both, often mixing the two as my beautiful wife works with me and our kids give us a helping hand when needed. As a true Phuketian what are your favourite spots on the island? Catch Beach Club for a good night out, Twinpalms for a Sunday brunch, Cuts for a steak, Artisans for its delicious salads, Suay for Thai-fusion in Phuket town‌ Tell us something that few people know about you. A friend and I built a 20m steel boat in a Thai Shipyard. Thank you, Norbert, for taking the time for this interview and we wish you much success with the new agency in Phuket. he pride of British manufacturing companies, Royal Enfield has established a reputation that dates to the mid 1800’s. Like many early manufacturers of personal transportation, founder George Townsend focused on producing parts for existing bicycle designs, and by 1893 was producing and selling complete bicycles under the Enfield name. It wasn’t long before Townsend turned the name Enfield and its slogan “built like a gun” into household words across Great Britain. Royal Enfield motorcycles are still produced in India and exporting worldwide, including to the United Kingdom and to the United States.
Recently Royal Enfield introduced the “Himalayan”- the most definitive motorcycle for your Himalayan adventure powered by a ground-up new engine the LS 410. Extremely versatile - designed to be your only motorcycle. Purpose-built for adventure and touring in the Himalayas. Bringing together 60 years of Himalayan riding experiences in a completely ground-up design, and powered by a new LS 410 engine, the Royal Enfield Himalayan paves the way for a purer, non-extreme and more accessible form of adventure touring in India. In fact, it’s extremely capable off-road capabilities make it adept for riding though potholed urban jungles as it does for treacherous mountain trails. O N E CO A S T

Built on a rugged duplex split cradle frame designed and developed by Harris Performance, the Himalayan is stable and agile in equal parts.A strong mono shock rear suspension with linkage allows for longer travel and delivers a smoother ride experience regardless of terrain. The Himalayan’s 220 mm ground clearance ensures it gobbles up obstacles comfortably be it in the Himalayas, rocky river beds or at stream crossings. An optimal wheel size combination allows for better control while riding over rocks and ruts. The Himalayan is powered by a completely new and evolved overhead camshaft engine platform that forms the base for its new long stroke LS 410 engine. The all new engine delivers high torque and usable power at lower RPMs. This makes for smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, making it easy to climb hills, or to manoeuvre through traffic. Modern design and materials of the engine translate to increased efficiency and low maintenance, and the engine can go 10,000 KMS between oil changes. Functionally - the Himalayans non-intimidating spartan design, a flat torque curve, accessible seat height and long suspension travel alongside the ease of ownership, make the Himalayan an extremely versatile motorcycle that is adept for long rides while equally being the definitive choice to navigate our urban jungles. Touring utility is built inherently into the Himalayan. A 15-litre fuel tank provides a long range of approximately 450 KMS. Luggage mounting points, for hard panniers, soft luggage and jerry cans are integral to the motorcycles design. A simple instrument cluster keeps track of speed, direction, ambient temperature, travel time, service intervals and multiple trip distances. Most importantly, an ergonomically sync between foot pegs, handlebar & seat height provides a comfortable upright riding posture that is necessary for long rides. An accessible 800mm seat height with lower mass-balance ensure ease of planting feet on ground for complete control. Royal Enfield Himalayan comes fitted with dual-purpose tyres that lend a confident grip and performance across a range of conditions. In addition to complete braking control, the 300mm front and 240mm rear disc brakes help to reduce braking effort. The Himalayan is more than the sum of its parts; not only does it deliver on its intent of being a purpose-built motorcycle for the Himalayas, it is also extremely versatile and designed to be your only motorcycle. Available in two colour options—Granite and Snow, the Himalayan will be on display in select Royal Enfield stores. To know more about #Himalayan visit: royalenfield.com/Himalayan

Sepak Takraw The Trendiest Thai Sport you’ve probably all seen but know nothing about
Having lived in Thailand for 25 years and calling Thailand my home I thought I knew most of the ins and outs of the culture and especially the sports. I’d seen this game being played often enough but never took much notice, that was until one day they were playing in front of my house on some open ground. Just a few young guys with a basic torn net but at least half of them were in good shape and I was astounded at the amazing high kicks being used to get the small wicker ball back over the net.The net was high and impressive techniques were used as players can’t use their hands only feet, knees, chest, and head to generate power to get the ball over the net. I then started to enquire more about this super cool sport. Traditionally the Sepak Takraw Ball is made of rattan but now more often made of synthetic rubber. Sepak Takraw is a South East Asian sport and played not only in Thailand but Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, and Malaysia. Most of these countries claim it as their own but most agree that it originated from China, evolving from a Sepak Takraw is a sport like volleyball with the net but where only the feet can touch the ball. Sort of an Asian combination of football and volleyball together. 70
O N E CO A S T
livingculture Where Sepak Takraw started remains a matter of intense debate in Southeast Asia, as several countries proudly claim it as their own. There is, however, some agreement that the game was introduced to Southeast Asia through commercial contact with China, where an ancient form of the game originated. It is believed that many variations of the game evolved from an ancient Chinese military exercise, where soldiers would try to keep a feathered shuttlecock in the air by kicking it back and forth. As the sport evolved, the animal hide and chicken feathers were eventually replaced by balls made of woven strips of rattan. The first versions of Sepak Takraw were not so much of a match, but rather displays of skill designed to exercise the body, improve dexterity and loosen the limbs after long periods of sitting, standing or working. The now modern version of Sepak Takraw is fiercely competitive and began taking shape in Thailand in 1829, the Siam Sports Association drafted the first rules for the game. The Rules of the Sepak Takraw The game consists of two teams of three players, lining up in a triangle formation with a net roughly the size of a badminton net between them. One of the three players on each team is in the back and called the “Tekong.” The other two line up in front and are called the “Left Inside” and “Right Inside” players. A coin toss determines who will serve first. One of the “Inside” players serves the ball to the Tekong, who kicks it over the net to the other team to start game play. A point is scored when a fault is made by the other team. A fault can be anything from the player touching the ball with his hand, to the ball going out of bounds, to playing the ball more than three times in succession before putting it over the net. The game consists of 2 sets, scoring up to 21 points. If the game gets to 20-20, the referee can up the score of a set to 25 points, with the winner having to win by two. If by chance each team wins a set, a tiebreaking round will be played to determine the winner. This is a great sport for exercise and one that looks much easier from the side line than it really is. Next time you see a group of Thai’s playing ask if you can try, it will make their day to see a foreigner floundering around trying to get to this small ball.

ituated close to the beach in the relatively quiet province of Rayong, in South East Thailand, sits a property reflecting an amalgamation of design, furniture and purpose. Elsie Evans Art Retreat is the brainchild of a Scottish expat whose paintings, drawings and illustrations have delighted and enthralled Bangkok art lovers for more than 20 years. Elsie first moved to Thailand in 1987 and apart from a twoyear period in Jakarta, Bangkok has been home. The decision to open a business and relocate to Rayong was born of the evolution of her art career and a desire to leave the relentless pace of Bangkok. Over her years in Bangkok Elsie became known for painting its soul. The modernization and generic development of the city diminished its culture and character. “I used to spend hours getting to the places I wanted to paint in Bangkok. Now everything is on my doorstep”, says Elsie.” “Less traveling time means more time to paint”

Elsie moved into her art retreat and new home in January of this year, though the buildings were completed several months earlier, allowing her to wrap up her teaching commitments in Bangkok. The project sits on over 2 rai of land and through determination and an almost relentless stubbornness, the retreat has become a successful amalgamation of modern design filled with 30 years’ worth of objects, large and small, reflecting her tastes and passions. “The architect I used was one of my son’s friends whom I used to teach when he was 8. I had a good idea of how I wanted the house to look but I lacked the experience to complete the technical drawings needed for construction. Although aiming for an open plan and communal feel, I wanted to make every room unique. Sort of a large airy sala with cozy corners.” O N E CO A S T

Driving up to the property one is faced with an imposing concrete structure hiding the comfort and spaciousness found within. The stark contrast to the other properties found along the quiet country road, almost make it seem almost eccentric. A tardis. After breaching the gates, first impressions are softened by the abundance of lush green vegetation visible through pathways into landscaped gardens and lining walls. The commitment to a healthy and produce laden garden is reinforced by the plant nursery, outdoor workshop and the multitude of potted plants. The many pots found on hard landscaping are pieces of art in themselves, often huge terra-cotta pots or vases representing the styles of other cultures. This continues through the main entrance, between main house and studio, opening up to the large central terrace framing a large pool and the views beyond. Surrounded by the L-shaped living spaces, with studio to your back, you immediately come across an antique Indian dresser converted to an outside bar counter hinting at the treasures to be unearthed inside. The ground floor has more glass doors and windows than solid walls, giving it a wonderful light and airy feel. With 5-meter-high ceilings, walls and pillars of finished concrete and large windows keeping living areas bright, the many large focal furniture pieces found in the living room and dining area are not lost or seem small and inconsequential, their warm natural tones and sturdiness affords unexpected areas of cosiness and clearly separate zones. The living room is softened by the large hanging on the wall from Africa, sourced whilst looking for kilims, the teak divider which has found pride of place in all of Elsie’s accommodations helps to hide the staircase and creates a warm backdrop to the feature lights, hand woven tent bags and carpets many of which are over one hundred years old.
Having previously rented in Thailand and being an enthusiastic cook Elsie wanted the kitchen in the property to be a feature. Unlike most houses in Thailand where food preparation areas are hidden away, small, unsightly and often the sole territory of maids, the kitchen is invariably the communal area for Elsie’s family and friends. Whilst the island and pantry allow for plenty of storage the subtle tones of surfaces and practical features became a blank canvas for the introduction of texture, colour and patterns through wall and flooring tiles and ornaments. The adjacent dining area is a relatively subtle affair. The large custom made mango wood dining table sits pride of place with a couple of subtle additions most notably a large natural wooden spirit house in the corner. Having travelled throughout Asia, Elsie has experienced a kaleidoscope of Asian cultures and influences affording her the opportunity to acquire several of her favourite pieces of furniture of different ages, styles and
colours. This is especially apparent in the large separate 4 bedroom en-suite guest accommodations each with their own theme. The Bali themed twin bedroom has two custom made beds from Indonesia with hand carved headboards, two antique puppets and accompanying mirror from Bali. The “princess room has a locally sourced antique four-poster bed from China and bright yellow and purple accented throws inspired by the Zhou and Han Dynasty. The triple aspect master bedroom on the top floor of the main building is dominated by a huge rattan bed which compliments the rattan furniture outside on the balcony. When the sliding doors are open the bedroom seamlessly transitions onto the huge balcony wrapping round the north side of the house, making the most of the views landscapes and ever present sea breeze. Also on the top floor, and opening onto the balcony are 2 spacious dual aspect twin bedrooms.

The studio and mezzanine library are dynamic workspaces, fitted furniture specifically designed to accommodate the surplus of art materials, sturdy metal staircase, abundance of easels attest to its functionality. The north facing double floor windows and triple aspect sliding doors allow for perfect lighting when creating masterpieces often inspired by the antique spice cupboard, landscapes, quirky still life ornaments or through perusing the books in the leather couch seating in the mezzanine library. Although proud of her new home and art retreat Elsie reflects, “...the furniture and design allow for the most rewarding aspects of the venture to be possible...creating a relaxed and unassuming environment to give people a chance to recharge their batteries make new friends and try some painting. www.elsieevansartretreat.com elsieevansartretreat@gmail.com Tel +66833011314 O N E CO A S T

Gadgets Cutting-Edge Technology
One Coast Magazine has sourced some of the latest gizmos and gadgets that make life simpler (or just cooler) so you can focus on the important stuff. Cutting-Edge Technology you won’t find at the corner store. Electronic Tattoos Tattoos are getting the tech treatment as well, the concept behind electronic tattoos is to create an electronic device, usually involving sensors, that is thinner than a sheet of paper and as flexible as a Band-Aid that can stick to the skin. The secret is flexible electronics. The core benefit is that they become part of the body in a non-invasive, painless and relatively inexpensive way. The patch could be used instead of bulky electrodes to monitor brain, blood pressure, heart and muscle tissue activity.
Wearable Pet Cameras Wearable Pet Cameras gives you a little insight into the life of your dog. It’s a device that attaches to your dog’s collar and records video only when there is movement. You can then view the video from any device like a tablet or smartphone. If you’re not anywhere near WiFi, the video will still record but instead upload it to the cloud when you’re back on WiFi.

Thai-born designer sets her sights on the Middle East By Nagmani
I
talian artisanship in fashion is something to marvel at, thus revered the world over. Obviously because it’s quite meticulous in its core if you ask yourself! To date, no other country has come close enough to making it their area of expertise in a full-fledged form. This historic charm is what ultimately drove the Thai-born Milan-based fashion designer Kittima Kwangnok to take a shot at fashion. Kwangnok’s tempting designs have put her in the league of tomorrow’s rising stars who want to redefine fashion with their own aesthetics. She found herself smitten by the undisputed elegance of Italian fashion at the age of 14 when she saw a Valentino dress the first time. “The red color of the dress just won over my senses, and this is what made me get into Italian fashion,” she said.
Now completely bowled over by it, she wanted to take a course and be fully skilled at the craft. So she went on to join NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti) in Italy to study fashion design. Then for her Master’s degree in fashion management, she enrolled at Domus Academy. “It was quite an amazing experience getting to know the actual elements of fashion at these two famous design schools in the world,” she said. The pleasant combination of colors, prints and fabrics she pours into her collections is what really makes the brand so trendy. “Colors do play an important role in a collection. It does change a person’s mood when they see it for the first time,” she said. When it comes to fabrics, she mostly uses silk, jacquard, cotton, faux fur, and organza. And this is exactly what she has used in her FW17 collection, which is inspired by the famous Italian Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio’s Young Knight in a Landscape work of art. “His oeuvre and the use of colors have been finely captured into the graphics and textures of the garments in the collection. The silhouettes prints and styles have been inspired from the knight’s armor combined together with the feel of Victorian era,” she said. “These are the two very different styles that have been brought together to create beautiful fabrics with a precise touch of Italian craftsmanship.”
fashioninterview
While the brand is influenced by Italian culture punctuated with touches of her Thai aesthetics, she loves to play and experiment a lot with fabrics and create new textures. “I’m hopeful my collections will strike a chord with women in the Middle East. Their fashion is exclusive, of rich quality and above all outstanding.” Influencers in her life She looks up to Giambattista Valli and Diane Von Furstenberg for flames of inspiration. “They’re geniuses for me. They’re so good with details and they know exactly what their women are looking for. Both of them understand women so well and know how to value them,” she said. “Thanks to them, I also realized that I wanted to support women and make them feel confident.” Kwangnok suggests every woman has a different mood everyday so there isn’t a particular one her creations are designed for. “Her style also changes with what mood she is in but still maintains the charisma of looking unique and different. She is modern, positive and open-minded,” Kwangnok said. “I would really like Olivia Palermo, Gigi Hadid and Michelle Obama to wear my creation one day. Milan: Her permanent abode now Milan for Kwangnok is the educated city in terms of culture, design and Italian lifestyle. “It’s not too small and not too big city and some parts of it are historical and some very modern which at the same time is very exclusive,” she said. Her designs speak volumes about her desire to make it big where she is today. “I’ve grown a lot with time and understood the importance especially the need to study the market, the clients, and the most important part of it all being the depth of research,” she said. All in all, she wants her brand to be seen in the context of the so-called high-low fashion with a style statement that immediately draws one’s attention.

In the coming months, Kwangnok’s main focus would primarily be on growing her business in the Middle East by developing collections that could make her clients satisfied and appreciated when they wear Kittima. www.kittima.it O N E CO A S T

Haute Joaillerie brand Avakian taking over the world By Nagmani

n the showbiz world, there is no room for celebrities to compromise their gorgeous looks at all especially when they are about to step out on the red carpet. It’s a highly significant moment for them. This is where the essence of wearing eye-catching jewelry becomes even more crucial. One such beautiful jewelry brand often being given preference to and worn by the A-list stars for high-profile events such as these for some time now is the renowned Geneva-based jewelry “House of Avakian” thanks to its daring and unique designs. In an exclusive interview with One Coast, we caught up with its founder Edmond Avakian to find out what led him to start designing jewelry in the first place, what it means to him and what more surprises are in store as its prominence shines through. Edmond Avakian’s father used to run a small jewelry atelier in Beirut, Lebanon. But with a degree in Engineering and Finance from the University of California, Berkeley, he was destined to go into the construction business and continue working in it. Yet, there was one more thing that was constantly on his mind i.e. the continuation of the family business. The idea of the family business shutting its doors, as his father prepared to go into retirement, went against all his principles.

“That’s how I made up my mind to give myself at least 6 months to see if it was a business I could really find passion in and how far I could grow it,” he said. “I’m proud that I’ve never looked back since then and we’ve been able to come this far.” He put his heart and soul into giving a new lease of life to the family business in 1976 as part of making it an international household name. However, it was something difficult to achieve from Beirut at the time due to the ongoing civil war. Keeping this sole factor in mind, he relocated it to Geneva, Switzerland in 1984 to make this dream come true. After all, the country has always been known as the birthplace of some of the world’s greatest fine jewelry and watch brands. This journey also led him to study the course of jewelry design at the Gemological Institute of America so that he could fulfill the desires of women who are constantly looking for extraordinary jewelry collections for everyday wear. For the most part, Avakian jewels are full of magical splendor because they are designed with a lot of focus put on their versatility and movement. “We use bold combinations of colors in our pieces. The color factor expresses our emotions and our background. Having grown up in the Mediterranean, I was always surrounded by colors in my environment and this very much expresses how I see the world,” he said. His other important priority is to ensure that jewelry should be easy to wear during the day as well as evening. “That has been our philosophy right from the start. We strongly believe that jewelry should be worn and not simply kept in a safe,” he said. The overwhelming response to the brand in the international market also stems from its sheer attention to detail and the exclusivity factor in the pieces it creates. “There is always something new for our clients in one form or another and we like to keep it this way to never let their interest in our creations diminish,” Avakian said. It’s no wonder that its Riviera Collection has always been a favorite because it’s very easy to wear on any occasion and people love the fact that the beads on the earrings are interchangeable giving them an excellent option to either dress the earrings up or down with different beads they like. “Another favorite are our latest Caché rings. The inside of the rings are fully paved with precious stones, a fact only known to the wearer. That brings forth our attention to detail where we will go to great lengths to give the wearer something extra-special,” he said. The brand always uses top-quality material in its pleasant creations. “We generally work with 18 carat gold for most of our pieces and a large variety of precious stones and diamonds that are sourced from some of the most important mines in the world. For us, it’s important that all the stones we work with are ethically sourced,” Avakian said. 96

Inspiration and heritage Inspiration is an intuitive force that does wonders if one is able to find it. And Avakian’s inspiration mainly comes from his travels across the globe. He spends most of his time traveling abroad and each trip gives him countless ideas which he then expresses through his classy designs. Likewise his Lebanese heritage plays an important part in all of this. “Lebanon has such a beautiful and colorful landscape from the mountains to the sea to its historic sites. The Byblos collection pays homage to my Lebanese roots, combining the name of this beautiful city with the amazing combination of colors that surround it,” he said. Its latest jewelry collection titled “The Gatsby Collection” which was launched at this year’s Cannes Film Festival is another superb collection that pays homage to Old Hollywood glamour. “We also wanted to weave a feel of an Art Deco collection into it so as to emphasize the brand’s love for color and movement,” he said. Jewelry is their ultimate beauty thing There is no denying that women think of their jewelry as some sort of supreme energy that rejuvenates their personality the Angelic way. Typically they seek to buy a niche and exclusive product which not everyone will necessarily be wearing during a Gala dinner for example. “She is someone who has generally purchased creations from several more commercial brands throughout her life, but there comes a time when she wants a more unique product offered with a personalized approach,” he said. “And this is what we’re here for.” People who wear Avakian jewelry are mostly sophisticated individuals with a global vision of the world and they are often on the move seeking to indulge in the extraordinary experiences of life in beautiful settings. “The Middle Eastern women’s love of jewelry is well known all over the world. It’s very much embedded in their lifestyle” he said. He also added that in the Middle Eastern culture the phenomenon of wearing jewelry is a sacred conduit passed down from generation to generation, and this never-ending divine connection is what motivates the youth population of today in the region to sustain a relationship with the jewelers who catered to their parents’ generation. “It’s a fascinating culture. The appetite for jewelry has generally remained strong throughout different generations,” he said. “I’m sure it will continue for years to come.” Middle eastern and Western women’s taste in jewelry slightly different It’s widely recognized that there are certain differences between Middle Eastern and Western women in terms of their taste in jewelry. According to Avakian’s sixth sense, this is where it always seems to be a challenge to make a product which easily appeals to everyone. “Whilst the Middle Eastern women are usually after bold and colorful pieces, and European women tend to prefer slightly more monochrome pieces, there is one thing where they don’t differ; both share very sophisticated tastes and have been purchasing fine jewelry for a very long time. So they know what they want,” Avakian said. Since Queen Rania of Jordan is his muse, it makes it easier for him to find the perfect balance while designing pieces for both. “Her gracious and elegant stature personifies everything that I look for in a woman,” he said. Even though the celebrity endorsement is at the core of the brand strategy as it gives itself an enormous amount of exposure through today’s social media platforms and creates a steady following of the brand in new markets where the brand isn’t yet known, the celebrities are no less excited about trying Avakian jewelry on big occasions if possible.
The list of celebrities who have already adorned his exquisitely designed pieces is impressive, with the likes of Catherine Deneuve, Rosario Dawson, Kelly Preston, Olivia Palermo, Dita Von Teese, Mary J Blige, Sara Sampaio and Michelle Rodriguez to name a few. And it makes perfect sense for Avakian to showcase his products at big events such as the Cannes Film Festival. “It gives us a unique opportunity to present our latest designs on a global stage through important red carpet placements. All the global press and personalities we work with are present on the occasion, which makes it an ideal occasion,” he said. Watchmaking: Another commendable milestone of the brand This is where the brand is making waves with the launch of its “Lady Concept” collection which is a remarkable array of bejeweled watches in striking colors that have simply become favorites for many women VIPs around the world. “We finally considered delving into it because over the years we have had numerous clients of ours asking us to come up with dazzling timepieces that could absolutely be on par with our jewelry collections,” he said. It’s a beautiful collection of timepieces with a classic yet modern style to it, which women can wear during the day as well as evening. “This fits in perfectly with our philosophy behind the majority of our jewelry creations. With this new launch, we’ve been able to tap into a whole new luxury market that our clients are part of. And we definitely plan on developing the collection further and will eventually launch some high jewelry versions of it. This is something our clients have been waiting for with a great deal of excitement.” With plans to make a foray into more markets, the brand is determined to do so in absolute style. “We have two new exciting openings at the end of this year and next year. The first includes the brand’s first opening in the Middle East, with a boutique at the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel in Riyadh followed by the second opening of our first boutique in Poland at the entrance of the iconic Raffles Europejski Hotel in the capital, Warsaw,” he said. As the business is on the verge of massive expansion, Edmond Avakian is extremely pleased to have his son and daughter (Haig Avakian and Corinne Avakian) join him in his mission to take the brand to all corners of the globe. “I wake up every morning with a lot of excitement to create new designs and share new ideas with my family, my staff and my clients. The most rewarding moment is to see these pieces go from a simple sketch to their final realization. It’s an emotion that can only be felt, but never described,” he said.

Bibi van der Velden’s jewelry Fanciful and daring 100
O N E CO A S T
By Nagmani
body&mindcool stuff Designing unique pieces of jewelry with mesmeric allure which women of grand taste often look for is no easy feat to achieve at all. It requires an absolute degree of finesse as with any other creative work. Then, there is no one quite like the New York-born Amsterdam-based fine jewelry designer and sculptor Bibi van der Velden who has carved out a niche of her own when it comes to giving shape to absolutely fanciful pieces of jewelry. Van der Velden discovered at a young age that the process of making sculptures and jewelry is more or less similar. She learnt early on that a jewel doesn’t need a body to come to life because it’s a little sculpture in itself. “I came to learn all of this from my mother who was a sculptor herself and I was always fascinated by her art and the way she worked. I spent every spare moment I had in her atelier, helping her in every possible way and learning how to sculpt,” she said. Then, the next logical step that she took toward becoming a jewelry designer was to attend The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where Van der Velden studied the basics of art, followed by her move to the Florence Academy of Arts. “That’s how I became a sculptor and found my way to designing jewelry at a later stage when I learnt my goldsmith skills at the Dutch Schoonhoven Institute in Netherlands,” she said. The focus of Van der Velden while working on her creations is to always make people smile. Not only that, she says it needs to have an exquisite fun detail that strongly makes them a conversation piece—something unexpected! “You can see this in a ring embedded in my ring pieces. Those are bigger rings with a small ring inside it.Another signature trait of mine is that I always use sustainable and unique materials like the gorgeous design of 40,000- year-old mammoth tusk or real scarab wings. This is what makes my jewelry pieces stand out,” she said. “I hope my brand inspires people and my designs accompany them in life by marking their milestones.” Van der Velden loves to use unconventional materials in her collection as they are truly a big inspiration to her. She tries to get her materials from all over the world and each should have a story behind it. “I started to make jewelry by incorporating antique objects and objets trouvés that I was collecting, in my pieces. I just love the idea of reusing material and so follow it meticulously in order to give them a second life in my jewelry. There is always a recurring recycle element in my work,” she said. She defines herself as someone who loves to travel and almost everything from different cultures seems to influence her and her overall designs.“I sketch in my sketchbook whilst I travel and so global influences can be seen in my jewelry and materials used. Most of my pieces come to life because I create them around a specific material that has influenced me during my travels,” Van der Velden said. Since nature is a big source of inspiration for her and it’s something that never ceases to fascinate her,Van der Velden wants her namesake label to be known as a sustainable jewelry brand of the highest quality well thought through details and unique fun pieces. Buying jewelry and wearing it is very much an individual’s choice, keeping in mind what occasion they choose to wear it on. So it shouldn’t be dictated by the third parties. And Bibi’s take on women or men who purchase her designed jewels is that they’re looking for something special; they are individuals who understand themselves and want something unique and beautiful to emphasize and show their own style. O N E CO A S T
101
But she wanted to reiterate one thing clearly: “I design for all kinds of women who appreciate my style and designs and choice of natural materials. My pieces have been bought by all types of women with all types of backgrounds and lifestyles. I could never pinpoint a perfect woman as I consider all my customers perfect.” Smitten by Middle Eastern women’s style Bibi finds herself being intrigued by the culture and history of the Middle East and she feels that women are using jewelry as well as fashion to express their diversity and dynamism in a great way. “Women in the Middle East have a huge knowledge of the materials used in jewelry which makes it inspiring to work with them,” she said. Moreover, having spent some time in the region, her personal experience implies that the Arab women are a little bit more glamorous. “The Western women mostly keep it shy and simple. The Arab women dare to wear some extravagant pieces and have a high regard for it,” she said. “I find it quite interesting.” Asked whether she would like to have her own showroom in the Middle East, she said, “Yes, I would love to have my pieces more available in the Middle East. A showroom or a nice collaboration with a concept store or department store that shares my values and beliefs on jewelry is definitely on my shortlist to achieve in 2017.” Participating in high-profile joaillerie exhibitions is highly significant for all jewelry designers as it gives them a wide-open platform to showcase their best work.“Since my jewelry is for a certain type of person, I think high-profile exhibitions are events where that kind of person likes to be. They appreciate the story, the craftsmanship and the materials and understand what I’m trying to express with my pieces,” Van der Velden explained. Most famous collections Her Mammoth and Scarab collections have remained popular from the very beginning. And she thinks it’s so because of the stories behind the materials. “The mammoth pieces are made of 40,000-year-old mammoth tusks, found in the Siberian Permafrost. And the scarab wings are leftovers from bugs that are eaten as a delicacy in Asia. The colors of the wings are incredible and all natural, which makes them super special,” she said. Her most recent collection “the Galaxy Collection” is also making waves. For this collection, Bibi has used Tahitian pearls, hand-picked opals and blue sapphires to express the galaxy around us in different pieces of jewelry. “I’ve this fascination with Tahitian pearls and their luster and coloring and hand-pick every pearl myself. The same goes for the opals. I love the fact that they’ve this galaxy vibe and coloring going on,” she said.

Celebs’ infatuation with Van der Velden Not long ago, she collaborated with Kanye West who was a big fan of her Mammoth collection. Sienna Miller, Garance Doré and Rihanna are also big fans of her pieces.“I think that there isn’t one particular dream celeb. I simply see it as a compliment when people want to wear my pieces,” she said. Although celebrity endorsement matters to some extent and is great for exposure according to Velden, she never gives her jewelry away to celebrities in the hope that they will wear it. There is one more praiseworthy project “Auverture” which Bibi launched along with her husband to make the experience of purchasing jewelry online quite a memorable one. Though she has worked with a lot of great online retailers, she couldn’t find an online retailer where she could freely express the stories behind her pieces. “This was something I really missed in selling pieces online. After all, behind every scintillating piece there is an intriguing tale. We wanted to create a platform where we could share the stories behind the jewelry designers and their jewelry. When somebody buys a piece, they could experience a lot of different emotions with it,” she said. “This way, we try to give the consumers the same experience they would have when buying a piece in a store, and try to exceed this experience with super interesting content.” In the upcoming years, there are lots of new projects to be unveiled by Velden. “I never sit still, so there will be a lot of inspirational collaborations. Ang Khang Royal Project Agricultural Station
Doi Ang Khang is a famous mountain in Fang District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. It is part of the Daen Lao Range that straddles both sides of the Burmese-Thai border. It is the site of a very special agricultural station. During the 1960’s, this area was branded part of the Golden Triangle. This mountainous region of Northern Thailand was considered one of the most dangerous places in the world, with an estimated 200 tonnes of Opium poppies (the main ingredient in heroin) grown across the lush terrain each year. It was in this process of growing these cash crops, farmers used a ‘slash-and-burn’ farming technique that, despite providing new crops nutrient-rich ash to grow in, contributed to the deforestation of hundreds of hectares of land and soil erosion. This first royal research station set up in 1969 under the patronage of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Rama IX was designated for conducting experiments on possible temperate plants to be grown in Thailand. The experiment was aimed at promoting the cultivation of cash crops to replace hill tribes’ opium plantations. It was when His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Rama IX was visiting the King’s Palace in Chiang Mai that this problem was noticed. While out on a walk he came across an opium-growing hill tribe village called Doi Pui, just an hour outside the city. Alongside the opium crops, farmers grew cool weather peaches which couldn’t grow in the warmer lowlands and earned them far more income than the opium poppies. It was the discovery of these peach trees in the Doi Pui village that brought about the start of this Royal Project. At present, the station has a further 12 species of temperate fruits such as raspberries, plums, kiwis, and strawberries, and more than 60 species of vegetables such as carrots, Brussels sprouts, and peas, and more than 50 species of temperate flowers such as carnations and roses. Inside the station, there are beautiful landscaped flower gardens, a restaurant and plantations. Facilities include guesthouses (inside the station), food and beverage, parking space, toilets, etc. There is a small entrance fee for vehicles which includes driver and an admission fee per person.

Gift of Happiness Foundation
A non-profit child care organization properly registered in the Kingdom of Thailand.
Dedicated to helping poor children and families in Thailand Gift of Happiness Foundation The idea of starting this charity was born in 1992 by British and Swedish born circus performers, Mr & Mrs Eddie & Charlotte Haworth when they ran circus training workshops for disadvantaged kids in Liverpool, UK. In 2000, Eddie was invited to perform at a charity event held at the British Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. Following that performance and a few more for the slum kids in Bangkok, it was quickly decided to bring more gifts of laughter and educational entertainment to orphans and poor families in Thailand. Now supported by a team of dedicated volunteers, Gift of Happiness Foundation is not tied to supporting just a few children at only one location. Therefore, this unique charity has the freedom to provide joy to thousands of children in urban and remote locations throughout the country.
ecohelping hands
The Foundation regularly gives simple interactive and educational comedy shows to those whose lives quite often contain little joy. They give away tons of essential goods during their aid giving projects, delivered where it’s needed most and at least once every month of the year. Orphans, vulnerable street children, Bangkok slum dwellers, families living on garbage dumps, AIDS centres and facilities housing physically or mentally challenged children. They regularly serve medical centres, crisis centres for abused women, communities of migrant worker families and people displaced by civil war who live in refugee camps. The charity gives children and their family’s basic necessities like clothing, bedding, medical supplies, educational equipment, toys, agricultural tools and tons more useful goods. The children always get to see a top class professional comedy show to leave them with a fantastic memory that no-one can ever steel from them!
Here’s how you can help. If you have any unwanted clothing, bedding, toys, school supplies, household items, etc., we would be pleased to accept them for redistribution to those in need. You can also buy new essentials (via their website http:// www.gohappiness.org) for children who have no one else to provide such important things. The Bangkok Charity Warehouse Accepts all manner of goods except for large furniture. There are several drop-off points in Bangkok where you may leave donations or we may be able to collect when necessary. Want to help this small but very effective charity? Volunteers are always needed and of course, giving just whatever money you can afford will also help us continue doing the important job of providing so much happiness and essential goods to so many needy people in Thailand.

SPIDER-MAN HOMECOMING
Tom Holland, Robert Downey Junior, Michael Keaton So a couple of years ago Marvel and Sony announced that Spiderman would, at last, be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And so we finally get a Spiderman movie done “the Marvel” way. And how utterly fantastic Spider-Man Homecoming turned out to be. This is one of the very best MCU movies yet. Marvel have definitely made the right move by not doing
just out DUNKIRK
Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy From the outset it is pretty clear that this is not a guts and glory war epic. This isn’t traditional warfare we’re used to seeing on the big screen. It’s 400,000 demoralised British soldiers trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk with a German army that’s slowly closing in. Here, we’re presented with three storylines of different time lengths. Firstly, the 400,000
another “origin” story as we have seen this twice before in the last 10 years . After the events of Captain America: Civil War, nothing is the same for Peter Parker. Being swept away by Tony Stark into the world of the Avengers has made his everyday high school life boring .
the MCU universe and both the action and the comedy are handled with real grace, while never forgetting that this is, essentially, a coming-ofage story The actors all do a fantastic job with real chemistry with them all but in the end, Spider-Man: Homecoming gets Spider-Man in a way that we haven’t seen since Sam Raimi-s Spider-Man 2.
Spiderman then runs into a group of bank robbers who have been creating weapons with the technology found from Avengers battles all over the world – but do the Avengers believe him???
Spider-Man: Homecoming is grand summer entertainment, full of heart, laughs, cheers, and action.. This is one of the very best Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, and one of the best films of the year.
Homecoming is definitely the funniest film yet in
soldiers trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk, a narrative that takes place over one week. The second, a single day with a British yacht and its journey from the English channel to rescue the English soilders and the third is an hour with spitfire pilot Tom Hardy.
Although it may sound a little confusing with the time frames etc. we always understand what is going on and the action and intensity of the movie has you on edge throughout. It has great performances from all the actors. Many of which do not have many lines.
Every character we’re presented with has a simple objective: to either survive, or to help others survive.
The movie isn’t interested in visual excess, either. We aren’t given computer-generated armies as far as the eye can see, or thousands of ships cresting on the open sea. Instead it all feels honest and true, so that when the spectacular moments happen, they feel real in ways that many other films of this scope do not.
Dunkirk is not a film that is very interested in exploring the larger, historical impact of the event. Instead the movie wants us to feel it. It wants us to experience every gunshot and every explosion. You have never seen a war movie like this.
Dunkirk is a masterpiece on every level. This is a film for the ages, and it’s not often we get to see a genuine classic but here we are.

just out ATOMIC BLONDE
CHARLIZE THERON, JAMES McCAVOY In a nutshell: Atomic Blonde is about a badass, bisexual British secret agent who fights like John Wick and seduces like James Bond who travels to Germany days before the fall of the Berlin Wall to recover some stolen intelligence. She wears a number of amazing outfits, kills a whole bunch of bad guys, and just looks terrific as she struts through nightclubs to an excellent soundtrack of ’80s synth pop. Atomic Blonde is one of the most purely entertaining action movies coming out this year. The director being Of John Wick fame – you can imagine the type of intense action we get in this
just out THE MUMMY
TOM CRUISE, RUSSELL CROWE, SOFIA BOUTELLA The Mummy is the first film in the Dark Universe series, which will unite their classic monster movies into one world. Nick Morton and Chris Vail are two U.S. Army scouts deployed in Iraq. But they have a little side business going on. As militants to destroy various treasures, they rescue the antiquities… and sell them on the black market. While following a lead, they are attacked by militants and in the process stumble across an ancient Egyptian tomb buried under the desert. As Nick, Chris, and Jenny unwittingly release an evil Egyptian princess from her tomb, the mummy begins
movie. Of course, there’s a reason everyone is punching and kicking each other in Atomic Blonde. Theron is Lorraine Broughton, a secret agent who is sent to Berlin after another spy is murdered, and a top secret list of spies and their codenames is stolen by a rogue KGB operative. Pretty soon, the complicated and convoluted espionage twists give way to Lorraine having to kill pretty much everyone. Like many spy movies, the plot twists and double crosses pile up with each passing scene. The film does reward you for sticking with it and once the action kicks in, it becomes easy to forgive the sometimes confusing plot.
as graffiti being sprayed across the screen and the atmosphere is provided by a soundtrack of recognizable ’80s hits that accompany virtually every scene in the movie. At the center of it all is Charlize Theron and Atomic Blonde is very much the Charlize Theron show. It’s a true movie star performance. It helps that Theron does many of her own stunts. Every single fight in Atomic Blond is an ordeal. There are no easy victories, and the film doesn’t shy away from showing its leading lady getting beaten to hell. This is especially evident in the film’s best scene: a ten-minute long fight through an apartment building where Lorraine battles a team of Russian agents.
The movie is very stylish with many of its set pieces and shots - the colors of a Berlin bar; the despair of a Berlin neighborhood; chase sequences set against the backdrop of protests, titles depicted
Atomic Blonde can be a bit confusing, but it is also sexy and stylish and shot by people who actually value action. It’s cool without being too cool.
the process must perform her ritual on her chosen host.. Unfortunately for Nick, it’s him.
The Mummy was that the trailers spoiled 90% of the film. There were very few, if any, surprises. The film from beginning to almost the last scene is shown in the trailers and commercials. And since the film is less than two hours, that doesn’t leave much that’s new.
I’m not too sure if this Dark Universe setup works at all. It seems every studio is trying to jump on the Marvel bandwagon these days and set up some type of shared universe. On the casting front, Sofia Boutella is great as Ahmanet. Here she does a great job as the female mummy. Boutella makes Ahmane evil, manipulative, and sexy while still being horrific. I also really liked Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll. On the story front, I liked the fact that they briefly tied the opening of this story to current events. ISIS militants destroying antiquities is a major real world problem. And the fact that they are also selling them to help fund their terrorism is also a tremendous concern. So connecting that to the discovery of Ahmanet’s tomb was a clever touch. On the negative side, one issue I had with
The other problem with The Mummy is that most of the film has been done elsewhere and better. When we are living in a world with quality horror tv and film (im thinking The Walking Dead or 28 days later etc) The special effects look very dated and cartoonish and I have got to say the dialogue and acting are absolutely cringe worthy. It always seems like Tom Cruise has been miscast in a cheap Indiana Jones knock off! If you’re bored and want to see a summer popcorn flick which is easy on head and doesn’t require too much thinking then The Mummy might be mildly satisfying. But I honestly felt like this could be more of a renter than a required big screen experience.

Havana Social
Havana Social is a new, early 1950’s pre-revolution secret Cuban bar concept hidden in a back alley in Bangkok’s bustling nightlife district. Soho Hospitality’s turnkey F&B development team opens the doors that got shut at the beginning of the revolution, now 63 years later, to reveal this once chic and now weathered and run down jewel. Why secret, well unless you find the mock retro entrance and dial the secret code on the antique telephone you won’t get access to the secret door at the back, revealing a very suave and sophisticated vintage lounge with oldfashioned couches and vintage furniture all leading to the Cuban influence including the authentic Colombian band and diverse DJ’s.
