TO DREAM IS TO WIN: SANDALS RESORTS SPONSORS THE 2022 JAMAICA BOBSLEIGH TEAM
Sandals Resorts International is proud to announce its sponsorship of the 2022 Jamaica Bobsleigh Team, as six fierce competitors gear up to compete this month on the world’s most coveted stage for sports. Among the highlights is a four-man team comeback 24 years in the making, with Sandals, too, sponsoring 1998’s qualifying team. “Sandals has always been a champion for our national athletes as we continue our legacy to support young competitors who aspire to represent our beloved home country locally and on the world stage,” said Sandals Resorts Executive Chairman Adam Stewart. “We beam with pride seeing our beautiful flag waving high, showing the world that Jamaica is not only a nation of dreamers, but doers – and that truly anything is possible when heart and hard work come together. The story of Jamaican bobsleighing is simply incredible and we are along for the long ride, cheering on this extraordinary team as they compete in this winter’s events and then pass down the torch for generations to come.”

the Caribbean through the work of the Sandals Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sandals Resorts. Sandals’ support of the 2022 Jamaica Bobsleigh Team will cover the substantial logistics and travel costs required to send qualifying athletes to Beijing, as well as the additional bobsleigh events leading up to the 2023 world championship event. The team consists of pilot Shanwayne Stephens, push athletes Matthew Wepke and Rolando Reid, and brakemen Ashley Watson and Nimroy Turgott. Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian is also representing Team Jamaica this year in a new women’s monobob event.
The team is led by team manager Nelson Christian “Chris” Stokes, who has been an active member of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Team since its inception in 1988, and was part of the Olympic team who inspired the ever-popular 1993 film Cool Runnings. For Stokes, who also serves as President and Chairman of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation, Sandals’ sponsorship is a fullcircle moment, having started out as a Sandals Resorts team member at Sandals Montego Bay in the mid 80s. “Our return to the world stage is an incredible win in itself and now Sandals Resorts has carried us over the finish line, allowing our team to put their focus on what they do best: bringing the Caribbean heat,” said Stokes. “We are also laying the groundwork for the future, as opportunities such as this one come with the responsibility of helping to ‘pilot’ a new generation of bobsleighers, and Sandals is the perfect partner for this on and off the track.” Upon their return to Jamaica, Stokes and the athletes will join forces with the Sandals Foundation to plan a number of long-term initiatives geared towards grooming the next generation of athletes. These will include visits to local schools to host motivational speaking engagements, organizing athletic training clinics, nutrition workshops with resort chefs, and more. Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts guests can also look forward to special meet and greets with Bobsleigh team members. “There is a beautiful alignment between what Jamaican bobsledding has done and what Sandals has done in Jamaica for 40 years, and we will remain closely aligned as we work

Independence Poem BY JOANNE ADAMS FOOD AND BEVERAGE DEPARTMENT (BAR)
Dear Grenada, I trust this letter reaches you in time. I know that you haven’t been doing too well. I keep hearing about the state of the economy, And how Covid is causing a catastrophe. I heard that you are concerned about your school-aged children. That they may be missing out on their formativ years. And you are worried that they might get lost, I also heard that in the past year you have lost many. Some to covid and others to suicide. And many you questioned, Was it really their time? I know you blame yourself Constantly wondering what could you have done differently? Worrying yourself intensely. I know it cannot be easy. So I write to ask you, How are you doing? No really how are you doing? Don’t give me the textbook version response, Or the one that you think will make you look strong Tell me honestly, How are you doing, my love? I can tell that you are hurting Before you answer, I just want to remind you That you . Concepcion. La Grenade. Grenada 133 square miles, 21 miles long, 12 miles wide. Home to approximately 100, 000 proud Grenadians Small… a mere reality, Strong …a fact beyond certainty. You. You Grenada, are resilient. You have been through revolts and revolutions. That have scared you for life But never once did you allow them to break you. So without a doubt This too, shall pass, And I, will be right here beside you. So, believe me when I say I love you, I am willing to sacrifice for you Tell me, my love, How can I be of service, to you? How can I help you? You see you gaining independence was never about, You over coming adversities on your own

Dear Grenada BY LENOX CHARLES WATERSPORTS
Dear Grenada, I was first introduced to you by my mother. Born into a world of magical beauty, I felt like I was in a Disney movie. The year 1985 it was dated, a Grenadian born I was initiated. I was transformed into a young boy, with nourishment from your soil. Everything was such a mystery, your spices which had strengthened me. Why so many invaders came, and for themselves, you, they tried to claim. Questions played within my mind, I needed to see your border line. As I grew into a young man, I decided to explore this land. The further in I went was another intoxicating moment. My exploration was in vain, for only a greater lust I gained- that’s when I knew I was deeply in love with you. I remember the day Boaster came, and to me they tarnished your name. They said you were an antique world, everything here was dull. They said if I wanted to see the light, I had to go where things were bright. This was a total disorder. I had to restore your honour. Oh I left your shore, for a foreign land I did not know. O Grenada there was nothing there, nothing worth to compare for even the moon, had a gloom. I started losing my nerves, I needed you my love. Everywhere I roamed, my thoughts were about home. My spirit was not free, I needed you desperately. A land they claimed untamed had never brought me pain. I knew disaster was near, I started breathing toxic air. Home I had to trod, these Boasters were frauds.

I’m back in your arms once again, I thank thee! There is nowhere else I’ll rather be. I have renewed my vows; all I have is unconditional love. On your birthday I’ll do whatever you wish. I’m definitely cooking your national dish. I’ll have on your colours which have given you so much flair, Grenada number one I proudly declare. Till death do us part, this little land has stolen my heart.

I would lay up all night on your sandy beach underneath the gazing sky just to thank the seven stars for leading you to me! You are a gem with such a pure heart, beautiful mountains and clear blue sky’s whose images are embedded onto the glassy lakes. Waters so steep that fall over a rocky natural balcony into a plunge pool deep; depth that can perfectly describe your love. All the spices that you possess are used to add flavor and sensual qualities that heightens the senses like a first kiss. Oh Grenada, you are surely a divine princess of life and with you I feel the moments of real paradise. As you age gracefully with time, I do hope you’ll continue to be mine. Sumn Satin with the Sales Fairy Asheika McNab is not your regular Junior Sales Executive, in fact she calls herself the ‘Resort Fairy’ as she not only does her best to grant the wishes of guests at the Beaches Negril resort, but is also very keen on delivering their wishes at top standard; whether it may be a Candlelight dinner, sweet treats from the kitchen or simply something they may not even know would enhance their stay in a terrific way. Outside of work, this resort fairy is still granting wishes for those in and around her community, with her business ‘Sumn Satin’. Sharing that her passion and love for natural hair was what inspired her to get this ship sailing; Asheika has been very busy making this fairly new business known to those around her. Initially starting out with just satin hair bonnets and scrunches, she plans on expanding her line to include; pillow bonnets and stashed scrunches that are able to hold things such as keys, money etc., for persons who may not want to walk around with additional loads. When asked what she loves to make the most, Asheika shared that it’s definitely her bonnets, and is sure to point out that she pays close attention to her finishing; so a customer may never be able to tell where she started and where she stopped. XXL
It is not easy balancing a job that requires a lot of late nights and a business with a growing customer base, but with the help of her mother and sister she has been able to get the job done every time. It is also her wish to one day hand over this business to both of them once it has taken off. Asheika encourages persons who have the desire to have a business of their own to take the risk and that it’s better to do it scared than to never do it at all. When the resort fairy is on her day off, it is safe to say she is granting wishes off resort.

THE BUZZ Resort General Manager Matthew Cornall said, “On behalf of our Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart who recognized over 300 Caribbean-wide healthcare workers for their efforts during this pandemic, I am very pleased to add even more accolades to these local Antiguans. Over the last two years, we know that our nurses and physicians locally are deserving of a standing ovation. Today, we’re talking about how we can encourage and applaud our medical team for their stellar work that has not gone unnoticed. We here at Sandals are truly grateful for the level of commitment and professionalism our medical team has delivered amidst stress, anxiety, loneliness, and burnout.” “It is definitely commendable what the medical team has done as together we all put in a lot of work. We had to figure out how to manage the ever changing health protocols alongside our own Sandals Platinum Protocols of Cleanliness. It was a learning experience and a journey on how to manage a crisis and how to be agile and deliver immediate responses at a moment’s notice, but we were able to pivot and execute successfully,” Environment Health and Safety Manager Aliyah Ramdin added. Resident Nurse Angelina Boyd said, “It felt really nice to dress up and be appreciated for the work we do daily. We sacrifice our own health and time to ensure we provide quality care and education to our guest and team members. In addition to dealing with the regular health issues, we had to adapt, learn quickly and transition into new roles with the onset of the pandemic but we have managed it well.” “As the time went by, we adapted and we got comfortable dealing with certain situations. Teamwork was very important and played a major role. We did have some rough patches but we were able to be resilient.” Administrative Assistant Chante Alexander said. The medical team in attendance at the dinner expressed gratitude to the appreciation in such a meaningful way. “To all Sandals leadership, managers and team members who took the time out to shower us with their appreciation, we say thank you.” Nurse Boyd said.

John prides himself in sharing his vast knowledge base with his team as he endeavours in helping to grow the brand and envisions his return to the Sandals and Beaches family as the perfect fit. When asked about the balance with work and family, a blushing John highlighted the positive impact that his daughter and spouse have on him. “The times that I get to be around them are priceless. They rejuvenate my being and enable me to be empowered each day to give of my best.”

HM SPOTLIGHT
In sharing his career goals, John has no plans of being anywhere else in the industry as he foresees himself becoming the best version of himself within the Sandals and Beaches brand. Having returned to the ‘family’ post the pandemic lockdown, John shares that his first mission is to learn to understand and value this brand in his mission of guiding a team of enthusiastic and passionate team members. While being philosophical, John believes that this time around, him stepping back from being a general manager at another resort to being Hotel Manager at Beaches Ocho Rios is the best projection for him to grow. Having to learn, unlearn and relearn the mission and purpose of Sandals and Beaches resorts, John highlights that the pandemic has taught all within the industry that being consistent is the best way forward. Growing and succeeding within the pandemic is a challenge that John and his team are resolute to make happen daily. His mantra is to be on the ground with your team and relating to guests’ concerns as the hospitality industry cannot operate successfully from the confines of a desk or office.
GETTING THE KNOW JOHN
IN FIVE… 1. OUTSIDE OF SANDALS AND BEACHES, WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? Having fun on the beach, playing video games and most importantly spending time with my family. 2. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT TO DATE? Being able to sit as a general manager at an all-inclusive resort knowing that I had to grow up and excel as a teenager without a mother. 3. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST PAST-TIME ACTIVITY? Playing and enjoying video games and enjoying a day at the beach fades to a distant second to having Madison Elizabeth (his daughter) call and remind me that she loves me. . 4. WHAT IS ONE THING ABOUT YOU THAT TEAM MEMBERS MAY BE SURPRISED TO KNOW?
February 2022
Apart from me blushing each time Madison tells me that she loves me… while attending high school in
38
Jamaica, I was bullied multiple times during the first two years. 5. WHAT HIGH SCHOOL DID YOU ATTEND? (Jokingly) I attended a College… The Cornwall College… LOL – Learn Or Leave (English version of his school motto)…

NEW PARENT
Kamara Springer
Sandals Barbados and Sandals Royal Barbados
For Kamara Springer, her pregnancy with her second child Arya Winter Springer-Delice was healthy and easy going. Therefore the Sandals Barbados dining room team member was excited to welcome her baby girl on August 14 last year. However, the initial joy was soon replace with some worry as little Arya needed to go for some tests. “That’s motherhood – filled with laughter one minute and challenges the next – but it’s all worth it. The test results were good and Arya is a healthy, happy baby. Her name means ‘honorable’ and it is truly an honour to be her mummy. She is a very calm, playful and loving child.” Kamara says the feelings associated with being a mom are indescribable; however she is always amazed by the fact that she was able to bring life into the world – twice. With big brother Kairo, who is 3 years old, Kamara has been enjoying her time with her family.
February 2022
Looking towards the future, Kamara says she wants her children to know that they can achieve
40
anything they put their minds to; that they can accomplish any dream. “I want to provide them with the best, to let them know that they are loved and protected. I will be here to guide and motivate then as they navigate the highs and lows of this world. I will be their rock, protector and main cheerleader.”
