Sports Day at Sandals South Coast has been known for its friendly rivalry and this year’s event was no different. The respective houses released videos warning the other teams to get ready, and there was a thrilling takeover of the staff restaurant with the colours of red, yellow, green and blue, days leading up to the final events. The team at South Coast knew this year’s staging would be one for the books. Though the competition was a stiff one, the Green Lanterns managed to dethrone the Blue Jays to become the 2024 champions.
Roughly three years ago, a nervous Deidre-Ann Osbourne sat before a distinguished panel of professionals who were charged with selecting the first-ever recipients of the Gordon “Butch” Stewart (GBS) Tourism, Hospitality and Service Scholarship for team members of Sandals Resorts and its sister companies.
Osbourne, the engineering coordinator at the resort company’s corporate office, had already started her first year of university, unsure about how she would finance her education.
She needed this scholarship.
As she introduced herself to the panel for the first time, neither she nor they knew that the young woman sitting before them would go on to become both a valedictory nominee for her graduating class and a nominee for the Jamaica Employers Federation Prize, an award given to a final year student who has excelled in a field related to human resources, labour, or entrepreneurship.
The GBS scholarship was the lifeline Osbourne needed to tackle university without having to worry about funding.
“I wanted to show them that anything is possible when you set your mind to it and take advantage of every opportunity.”
She recently completed her studies for a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management at the University of the West Indies, Western Jamaica Campus, finishing with an impressive 3.95 GPA and earning First-Class Honours and becoming this year’s recipient of the Most Outstanding Performance in Human Resource Management Award when she graduated in November.
“Being nominated by my faculty for valedictorian was unexpected but deeply satisfying. Receiving recognition for outstanding academic performance was definitely a memorable achievement,” she shared, her tone filled with gratitude and pride as she recalled the arduous journey of balancing work and school.
Her work and university schedules were often tight, leaving no time to linger at the end of the workday. She would dash from the office, hop in a taxi, and intently make her way to evening classes, which were thankfully just a few minutes away. Occasionally, she had afternoon classes that conflicted with her work schedule, but she praised the unwavering support of her head of department for allowing her the time to attend.
“Balancing work and school was challenging yet rewarding. Having practical experience on the job made it easier to connect with the theoretical aspects of my studies. The knowledge I gained from this degree has allowed me to bridge industry standards with academic principles, empowering me to make more informed decisions and perform my duties with greater efficiency,” she said.
In her own words, it has been a childhood dream to earn a tertiary-level education. But because of financial difficulties, she waited 15 years after graduating from high school to see that dream realized. Today, she isn’t just the first team member to earn a bachelor’s degree through the Gordon “Butch” Stewart Tourism, Hospitality & Service Scholarship; she’s also opened the door for a new milestone within her very proud family.
“As a first-generation university graduate, I fulfilled my personal dream of earning a degree and became a role model for my son, niece, and nephew. I wanted to show them that anything is possible when you set your mind to it and take advantage of every opportunity. The journey may not always be smooth, but the goal remains the same,” a beaming Osbourne shared.
Having completed her university studies, Osbourne says she has become more wellrounded and has a stronger foundation for professional development. With her newly earned qualification, she is now better positioned to seize new opportunities and contribute more meaningfully to the company's growth when those opportunities arise.
Osbourne’s journey has captured the attention of Sandals Resorts’ Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, who hopes her story will inspire other team members.
“I want my team to grow, evolve, and reach their full potential. The Sandals Corporate University empowers team members to uncover and develop their unique gifts and
passions. It’s a golden ticket to becoming exactly who they aspire to be. All they need to do is seize the opportunity, just as Deidre-Ann did. That’s the message we share with our team members,” said Stewart.
Sandals Resorts International was honoured with a special award at the prestigious Golden Tourism Day Awards held in Jamaica recently. The all-inclusive luxury resort brand was recognized for its exceptional contributions to Jamaican tourism. Hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, this remarkable event also celebrated Jamaicans who have dedicated over 50 years to shaping and enriching our nation’s tourism legacy.
In attendance was our Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, who accepted the award, and SRI team members, including Dalton Smith - Sandals Resorts' longest serving team member. Congratulations Team Sandals and Beaches Resorts as it continues to champion the spirit of Jamaica on the world stage.
Multinational luxury hotel brand, Sandals Resorts recently held its second caribbeanwide town hall meeting for 2024, where Executive Chairman Adam Stewart addressed thousands of team members live from Montego Bay. The event, which connected employees across nine countries, showcased a suite of transformative projects focused on enhancing both the team member experience and the company’s offerings.
A standout announcement was the launch of the Sandals PALM Pass, a groundbreaking team member discount programme offering savings across a wide range of merchants, including supermarkets, restaurants, gyms, and travel services.
“This is our way of easing the burden of rising global costs,” an impassioned Stewart shared. “I’ve seen our head office working tirelessly, reaching out to business leaders across the Caribbean to make this happen.” He credited the success of the initiative to the Employee Experience Division, spearheaded by Corporate Manager Jamie Green, and emphasised that it’s only the beginning of Sandals’ efforts to enrich the lives of its team.
The PALM Pass is part of a larger wave of enhancements, including improved gratuity offerings and expanded discounted rates for team members and their families. These initiatives were informed by a group-
wide survey earlier this year, where team members were invited to share how Sandals could elevate the employee experience.
“Because you spoke, we listened,” Stewart affirmed, addressing thousands of engaged employees both in person and online. Their reactions, marked by smiles, nods, and applause, spoke volumes about the impact of these developments.
Building on feedback from the survey, Sandals established eight pillars of employee welfare, which focus on communication, social engagement, collaboration, health and wellness, recognition, and innovation.
Green likened these pillars to a chef’s recipe for crafting the perfect dish. One standout initiative, Project Sparkle, has already transformed a dozen staff restaurants across the group, with six more renovations on the horizon. “From mental health initiatives to improved dining facilities, we’re ensuring these pillars touch every level of the organisation,” Green said. “So whether you are a supervisor, a team member, or at any level of the organisation, you will feel the impact of the eight pillars of employee experience.”
Stewart also shone a spotlight on the transformative power of the Sandals Corporate University (SCU), the fully funded training ground empowering employees to grow within the company. Success stories, like those of Delino Moss and Tamon Allen, who advanced from entry-level roles to senior management, exemplify the opportunities available through SCU.
“These stories are just a snapshot of the magic happening in this company and that
has been happening for years,” Stewart said, underscoring that team members remain Sandals’ greatest asset. “We are a people business. The real horsepower that makes us who we are is our 18,500 team members.”
Looking ahead, Sandals also announced plans for new resorts in The Bahamas, Jamaica, and other destinations, promising more than 5,000 new hires and 300 managerial positions. Stewart encouraged team members to enroll in the SCU, reiterating that Sandals is dedicated to promoting from within.
“When we grow, you grow,” he stated. “I’m offering to 100 percent of our team members in this company, that if you have the right attitude and aptitude, I’ll pay for it. I’ll take you, with our team, to levels you may not be able to reach on your own. Why? Because it’s good for you, and if it’s good for you, it’s great for this company—and if it’s great for this company, we’re going to the moon. And that is the plan. We believe in education.”
The meeting had moments of laughter, camaraderie, and surprise giveaways. Stewart awarded complimentary stays to the newly unveiled Sandals St Vincent, underscoring the company’s commitment to fostering a spirit of gratitude and unity.
The meeting left employees inspired and energised, ready to embrace a future defined by growth, opportunity, and the enduring bond that makes Sandals a family.
Marilyn Nelson’s journey with Sandals Royal Plantation is a testament to dedication, hard work, and a genuine love for hospitality. A proud native of Clarendon, Jamaica, Marilyn moved to St. Ann at the age of 17, a pivotal moment that would shape the course of her career. Since the opening of Sandals Royal Plantation 23 years ago, she has been a steadfast and beloved member of the team, embodying the high standards of service that the resort is known for.
Starting out as a casual worker at another resort, Marilyn initially worked as a super nanny. When that resort closed, she gained a job as a casual labourer during the construction of the pier at Sandals Royal Plantation. She recalls attending a job fair at the hotel, which led to her becoming one of the first team members at the resort. "I am happy to know that I am still standing, giving of my best," she says, reflecting on her long tenure at the resort. For Marilyn, being a part of Sandals Royal Plantation since day-one has been a source of great pride.
Her colleagues and managers over the years have praised Marilyn for her easy-going nature and exceptional work ethic. Known for her radiant smile and unwavering hospitality, she says, "The guests really love me, especially my smile. They all say they love my smile." Marilyn’s ability to make every guest feel special has made
her a cherished figure at the resort, with many returning year after year to enjoy her warmth and charm.
As the property has evolved over the years, Marilyn has watched with pride as the resort has undergone significant changes and improvements. She is especially pleased with the refurbishing of the rooms and the overall modernization of the facilities. Marilyn is also excited to see more young people joining the team, as Sandals continues to grow and evolve. "Sandals has developed tremendously over the years. We have better staff facilities, more training opportunities, better wages, and we are seeing a great way forward," she says with enthusiasm.
In her eyes, Sandals' commitment to staff development is one of the company’s greatest achievements. She highlights the Hospitality Training Programme, which provides young people with on-the-job training, a stipend, and marketable skills that can help them thrive in the hospitality industry, even if they don’t end up with a permanent position at the resort. Marilyn is also full of praise for Sandals' recent initiatives, including salary increases, gratuity enhancements, long service recognition, and the training opportunities provided by the Sandals Corporate University.
Over the years, Marilyn has had the pleasure of working alongside exceptional leaders, including past General Managers Peter Frazer and Arnold Nugent, as well as the current General Manager Omar Robinson. Marilyn appreciates the support and guidance she has received from these leaders, which has played a crucial role in her personal and professional growth.
When she’s not at work, Marilyn enjoys unwinding by watching African movies, which provide her with a sense of relaxation and joy. Her favourite dish is curried chicken, a comfort food she enjoys in her downtime.
Marilyn also extends her heartfelt gratitude to Sandals' Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, for his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of hotel workers and the Jamaican hospitality industry. "Thank you, sir, for what you have been doing for the hotel workers and the Jamaican hospitality industry. You are doing a great job, and the workers really appreciate it," she says with sincere appreciation.
Marilyn Nelson is a true Sandals Royal Plantation stalwart. Her legacy of service, warmth, and dedication continues to inspire those around her, and her 23 years of commitment to excellence remain a shining example of what it means to be a part of the Sandals family.

by Rochelle Forbes, PR Manager, Sandals Royal Caribbean
I came forth like many, from humble beginnings
I was no special flower.
I was planted by the roadside, for me there was no posh, illustrious flower bed.
There was only a higher power that dwelt within me, it chose me and watched over me, like the sun, the moon, the stars above my head.
I was no special flower, my life was no bed of roses.
There were stones and pebbles, envious mates and a whirlwind of dust from the street.
But amidst the turbulence of time there have been memories, simple memories of childhood oh so sweet.
I was no special flower, no one watered me daily or built me a barricade to protect me from oppressive horns.
But through hardship I learned to drink from the fountain of life and stand my ground against the thorns.
I was no special flower, wasn’t given all the necessary minerals to help me flourish.
Like a sophisticated grasp of other men’s thoughts and endless lessons in eloquence of every degree.
But lacking that, I learned to think independently and analyze life for myself, and all my lessons in common sense and experience have made my leaves a brighter green.
I was no special flower, wasn’t put in a pot and kept inside away from the tide.
At an early age, I was thrown out in the deep, I had to grow feet and learn to walk or at least to creep.
I was no special flower, wasn’t ornamented, didn’t put out any buds didn’t grow very fast.
But beneath the ground my roots were stretching, extending.
Thank goodness, for I’d need strong roots in order to last.
I was no special flower, wasn’t put on show for my beauty or duty, wasn’t given any special power.
But through the years, I moved quietly towards the sunlight towards the sound of a higher calling, putting out my branches, my limbs, my leaves.
Offering shade, while wading in the breeze.
Yes, they were right, I was never a special flower nor an ordinary one either.
I was a misunderstood evergreen, an extraordinary tree that today stands like a tower.
