30 BrillianT Networking Conversation Starters It’s a tad easier than it sounds. Fact is, no one’s going to turn you away if you walk up, smile, and say, “I’m so-and-so. Nice to meet you.” In fact, others will probably be relieved that someone else started the conversation! But, the process is definitely a lot easier when you have a few go-to icebreakers in your back pocket. So, we’ve put together a handy list to refer to before your next event—some of our own lines, a few favorites from our career expert friends, and icebreakers our Twitter and Facebook followers have used, too!

Conversation Starters 1-5
The Classics When in doubt, just try the basics: asking what someone does, inquiring why he or she is at the event, or even just reaching out your hand and saying hi. 1. “What’s your favorite conversation starter at a networking event?” 2. “So, what do you do?” It gets them talking first and you can think about how to approach the conversation or how you could possibly work together. 3. “So, what brought you here today?” 4. “Hi there! I’m Michelle. What are you passionate about?” 5. “What’s your story?” It always sparks a fascinating and non-generic conversation
Conversation Starters 6-10
Location, Location, Location No matter what, you’ve got at least a couple things in common with every person in the room: the event you’re attending, the place it’s being held at, and the food and drink you’re consuming. Use that to your advantage by striking up conversation about what’s going on around you. 1. If I’m at an event with food, I’ll often use that as a conversation starter, à la “I can’t stop eating these meatballs. Have you tried them?” 2. “How did you hear about this event?” 3. “It’s so hot (or cold) in here.” Hey, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but the person will either agree or disagree, and pretty soon you’re talking about weather patterns, your best umbrella, and then your career goals. 4. “I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed by the deluge of info that’s being firehosed at us today. Is there one nugget of brilliance that’s really resonating with you?” 5. “What a beautiful venue. Have you been here before?”

Conversation Starters 11-15
The Newsworthy Another thing you have in common with, well, everyone? What happened in your city or the world today. While you don’t want to start up any hot political debates, some light-hearted headline sharing is a great way to break the ice. 1. “What do you think about [insert topic germane to the event or person here]?” I’m biased: News is a great engagement tool. 2. “Wow, I just can’t believe all the crazy news headlines today. What a week!” 3. “Any chance you read the news today? I missed it, and I’m dying to know what’s happening with [insert news topic here].” 4. “So, was it a pain for you to get here?” The mode of transportation and location in the city are always on peoples’ minds. There’s bound to be a story about it. - Jessica Gordon for The Muse 5. “Did you catch the game last night?” It’s a classic, but it’s a classic for a reason.

Conversation Starters 16-20
Great for Introverts If you’re an introvert, walking into a room full of unknown people can feel extra intimidating. One of our favorite approaches is to look toward the outskirts of the room and find someone who looks a little lonely. Maybe that woman sitting by herself at the table doesn’t know anyone and is just hoping that someone will come talk to her. Be that person, and try one of these lines. 1. “Man, these networking events can be so crazy. Mind if I join you over here where it’s a little quieter?” 2. “As we’re both here at the (buffet, bar, waiting room), I feel I should introduce myself. I’m [name] from [company].” 3. I like to compliment people on their clothes and accessories. I find this approach to be more friendly and less about professionally connecting, especially if you’re at a networking event. I believe both men and women can compliment each other on their choice of attire and use it as a conversation starter! 4. “Excuse me. Do you know how much a polar bear weighs? Enough to break the ice! Hi, I’m Andi. Nice to meet you.” 5. “Man, I hate networking.” If you sense a fellow party-goer has similar misanthropic tendencies, walk up and start a conversation about your mutual distaste.
Conversation Starters 21-25
The Funny We don’t recommend using anything like the joke, “How much does a polar bear weigh?” (Answer: Enough to break the ice.) But when you’re meeting new people, a little humor is a great way to ease the awkwardness and kick-start a fun conversation. 1. I always start by saying, “I can’t believe how under-dressed I am for this event.” A little self-deprecating humor is always good, and I’m always poorly dressed. 2. Something jokey—like “I just came for these carrot sticks.” Then, ask a question, like “How’d you hear about this event?” 3. “So, on a scale of 1 to undrinkable, how terrible is the Chardonnay?” 4. “Did you see the Japanese ‘Attack of the Raptor’ office prank video?” Timely mixes of humor and intrigue can be great. 5. “I’ll be honest, the only person I know here is the bartender, and I just met him two minutes ago. Mind if I introduce myself?” inTouch

Conversation Starters 21-25
The Totally Random (But Hey, They Just Might Work) If all else fails, try one of these. 1. Any chance you know a great sushi place around here? I’m not familiar with the area, and I’m headed to dinner after this.” 2. “Hey, aren’t you friends with [fill in random namåe]?” It doesn’t matter if you really think the person is someone you know, just walk up and ask if he or she is friends with someone you know. He or she will tell you “no,” and conversation will commence. 3. If you see a group of people that seem engaged in quality conversation, just approach them and say, “Well, you guys are certainly having more fun than the last group I was talking to.” 4. “If there is one question you do not want me to ask you, because you are sick and tired of answering it, what question would that be?” 5. “I’m working on an article about the best and worst conversation starters ever. Any particularly good or terrible ones you’ve heard tonight?”

OWEN BROWN’s Deepest Dive Yet Diver attains Master’s Degree through Sandals Corporate University Scholarship Opportunity does knock more than once in a lifetime. At least, it did for Sandals Montego Bay’s scuba instructor Owen Brown. The certified dive instructor recently completed his Master of Science in Accounting on a fully-funded scholarship from the Sandals Corporate University (SCU). That scholarship granted in 2015, is one of over 755 tertiary grants that the SCU has given team members since its inception in 2012.
He recalls waking up early to meet the demands of his job and heading to school immediately after work to attend classes. There was less time to spend with family and friends as he got deeper into his studies.
But that scholarship wasn’t the first one to knock at Brown’s door at Sandals. In fact, it was through Sandals that he made his first entry into tertiary studies. “I did my Associate Degree through a Sandals scholarship. That was way back in 2004, long before there was Sandals Corporate University. They just posted these things on the notice board and anyone who wanted to get higher education could just apply,” said Brown who has been with Sandals Montego Bay for the last 20 years.
inTouch
Challenging journey “I really advise young people to try and complete their education early. When I started my Masters, I was 49 years old. By then I was a supervisor in the Watersports department and I have a wife and child. Balancing my degree, work and family life was very challenging,” Brown expressed.
“Also the programme I was in stipulated that I would be asked to leave if I failed too many courses. My Sandals scholarship also stipulated that I would have to pay for the courses failed,” Brown explained. Another thing that encouraged Brown to stay beneath the surface and complete his dive was his daughter who enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine programme at UWI the same year he started his Masters.

“I wouldn’t have been able to fulfill my dream and hers if I had not got a scholarship from Sandals, so I had to finish my degree,” Brown confessed.
According to Sandals Montego Bay’s General Manager Carl Beviere, Brown is a shining example of the hope the company has for all team members.
But perhaps the most difficult part of the three-year dive to complete his Master’s Degree was the disruption of his sleeping pattern which many university scholars can relate to.
“Through our Sandals Corporate University, we are not only interested in developing hospitality workers, but we want people to achieve their full potential whatever it is,” Mr. Beviere stated.
“The doctor said my inability to sleep was because I was thinking hard about completing my studies. My doctor said, ‘Owen just press on, you will be proud you did when it’s all over’,” Brown reminisced.
As for Brown, he is waiting for opportunity to make that third knock at his door so he can venture into the field of Accounting.
In 2018, three grueling years later, at the age of 52, Brown finally resurfaced with a Master’s Degree in Accounting from the University of The West Indies.

“I love Watersports but with my Accounting qualifications, I would like to get some experience in that area. The thing is it has to be at Sandals, this company has given so much to me, I wouldn’t mind growing with them some more,” he said with a smile.

ST. LUCIA Just recently, Sandals Halcyon Beach Resort celebrated 25 years, and last year, Sandals Resorts International celebrated 25 years of operations in Saint Lucia. What does it feel like to work for a company that has been here in Saint Lucia for 25 years? SHEROL FELICIEN: SANDALS GRANDE SAINT LUCIAN, ROOM ATTENDANT HOUSEKEEPING “Let me give you an example of how much I love my job. One day I got home early from work. I fell asleep on the chair. All of a sudden I jump from sleep and I started getting ready for work. My mother saw me and she is asking me what happen. I realized I was getting ready to go back to work. I just love working for Sandals.”
NATHANIEL GEORGE SANDALS GRANDE SAINT LUCIAN, ROOM ATTENDANT – HOUSEKEEPING “After working for a company that has been here for 25 years I feel part of something extraordinary. Being here for the inception of the Grande from 2003, most of my professional life has been here at Sandals. I started out as a Bellman and through the years I have made a lot of progress both in my personal life and in my professional life. I feel confident in having a company that is here for the staff and you can grow with it.”

“It makes me feel privileged and wonderful. It has made me some one that I never thought I could have been. Sandals is truly a definition of love is all you need, both with guests and with the team members. I just came back from the Bahamas on a task force programme for 6 months and the exposure has really brought out a lot of attributes that I did not even think I had within me. That experience taught me so much. I can travel and get to know different people, and gain knowledge. Sandals cares about the team members.”

“Both of us are new here. For me Johnnel, I think it is very exciting for me to be working here at Sandals Grande. Already, I got the opportunity to take part in the Festival of the Arts, and I won the category of Top Female Vocalist.” “As for me, I think it is very exciting working for a company that has been around for 25 years. There are a lot of opportunities and a lot of new things to learn. And I am so happy because I won the Top Dance Duo competition in the Festival of the Arts so I am looking forward to the big competition where we compete against the other team members in the company. Prince Oakley Beaches Negril
Prince Oakley is the legendary team member for 2018 at Beaches Negril. This came as no surprise to most people as they figured the animations team member would’ve left Prestige Awards with a prize since he has been a major hit among the guest population. Why is the small figured dancer such a superstar? We grew curious. We wanted to find out a few things about him, not the ordinary questions like where he sees himself in five years, we wanted to hear the cool stuff, the laidback stuff. We thought that one way to discover why Prince is so charming is to turn the Spotlight on him…and we did!
1. What is one of the things you would put on your “bucket” list? Knowing that I live with my dad, owning my own home would definitely have to be on my bucket list.
2. What is the first thing you notice about the opposite sex? This might sound weird but I have a serious toe fetish. I like to see girls with clean, pretty toes and even fingernails.
6. Mountain hideaway or beach house?
4. Where would you go if you were invisible?
Let me see... I would go to Florida because that’s where my son’s mom is. I don’t have a visa.
5. What is your favorite movie line?
“I am Iron man” (Tony Stark said this just before he snapped his fingers in Avengers: End Game)
7. If you knew the world was ending in 2019, what would you do differently?
I would repent. I grew up in a Christian family. They are always telling me to give my life to God so if I knew the world was ending, I would just repent... you know, do the right thing.

SandalS OCHO RIOS I ISLAND ROUTES DESK I am built from every mistake I have ever made. I am a real person. I struggle and I sparkle. I’m not scared to admit that at times I feel worthless, lost not enough. I will not edit the sad, be angry for the messed up parts of my story or the holy magnitude of my triumph s to make anyone comfortable. I am aware that I am less than some people prefer me to be, but before I was fire I was water. I gave and gave and gave till I became a sea of desert, alone, but still I’m me. With every fibre, every fallen tear, I am still me. So don’t judge my story by the chapter you walked on. I’ve made bad decisions and wrong choices, but I am me. I’ve said right things because I am me. I’ve loved and trusted the wrong people, still I am me. I wouldn’t change a thing if given the chance. Why? Because I am me. In order to love who you are, you can’t hate the experiences that shape you. I own my story, my journey. Rocky, hell yes. Impossible, never. God’s got me.
