WHICH IS ONE OF MANY UNIQUE MARKETING TOOLS USED BY SANDERSON YOUNG THROUGHOUT THE REGION.

of this magazine are extensively circulated, with over 20,000 individually placed in prime households from County Durham to the Scottish Borders. I very much hope that you will enjoy this magnificent reflection on the housing market and the fascinating editorial pages. The last six months have been extremely exciting within the property business, with the most dramatic being the election results in May, giving a conclusive answer to the speculation which slowed enquiry levels; the second quarter of 2015 was particularly busy with renewed confidence and trust in the new government. The housing market likes certainty and whether it is general elections, stock market crashes or European worries over Greece and other countries, it is a relief to see the current economy in a more stable condition. The world of estate agency in the North East is experiencing a period of transition and there is no doubt that some of the more established estate agents are being challenged by newcomers to the market and changes in direction from those who have foresight. Sanderson Young has always prided itself on being fiercely innovative, seriously independent and extremely proactive with their professional marketing of houses. We welcome challenges and thrive upon a competitive market. In 2015 we have renewed servers within the company, are replacing our software with even more progressive systems and are investing in expanding our workforce to meet the demands of new clients and business opportunities. The housing market appears to be very different to normal conditions with very high demand in core areas under £500,000 leading to price rises and best and final offers. Yet at the top of the market there is a more comprehensive choice of property and less buyers, making some houses look extremely good value for money, especially in Ponteland and Darras Hall which are once again increasing in popularity. The ongoing development of the former La Sagesse School in Jesmond is proving to be extremely popular and I am delighted that David Wilson Homes are achieving record levels of interest for this extremely exciting scheme. There are still apartments yet to be released and we would urge prospective buyers to be quick to avoid disappointment. The unique features of Sanderson Young continue to be our team of very experienced staff.

In every office we have decades of knowledge and understanding, to guide not just the buyer of your home, but also the efficient exchanging of contracts and completion which cannot be taken for granted in such volatile times. The company fall-through rate between those sales agreed and those exchanging is at a record low of 13 per cent, whereas the RICS reports a national average closer to 30 per cent, proving the outstanding service of my team. Our valuers are available seven days a week, as are our Newcastle offices, a service matched by few other agents. Our internet site has leading edge technology and our fees in north Northumberland are extremely competitive. I have never quite understood why clients would consider an agent who is paid the whole of their fee on a listing/instruction, since there is no incentive to sell their property beyond this stage and the staffing, professionalism and experience will often reflect that. An agent should always be paid what they are worth and all of our valuers and managers are very open to tiered fees, whereby we will only be paid in line with the client’s expectation of what they hope to achieve, either by price or timescale. As we become more progressive with social media we will see greater numbers of viewings taking place through Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin, as we communicate more effectively with all areas of the modern day spectrum in which we negotiate. Like the economy, the housing market is slowly crawling back to the levels of interest shown in pre-2007 and now provides an excellent opportunity for those wanting to invest at the higher price levels, where there are some extremely good properties at realistic prices which in years to come will be considered ‘bargains’. Here at Sanderson Young we will continue with our innovation and we will develop our marketing skills to ensure that our clients experience the maximum penetration of the market place to affect their sale in the shortest possible period of time. In our rare! division we continue to place a number of sales ‘off the market’, without the glare of publicity. Nearly 30 per cent of our turnover is achieved in this way and if you are considering a discreet sale or purchase, please let us know so that we can tailor a bespoke service for you. In November 2015 Sanderson Young will be one of the first sponsors working with St Oswald’s Hospice and the launch of the extremely exciting Great North Snow Dogs Project, which will be one of the largest fundraising events within the North East of England in 2016. If your company wants to be involved in such a prestigious event then please do not hesitate to let me know. I very much hope the Autumn and Winter of 2015 and 2016 will provide peace, health and prosperity for our many current, past and future clients. If I can help you at all with any property transactions please do not hesitate to contact me.

NEWS&UPDATES

COLLECTION

Is an estate agent worth their commission? In some cases, no. A shocking answer from an industry professional maybe, but startlingly true. There is a huge misconception that all it takes to sell a property is to list it on the Internet and wait for the calls to come in. That if you live in a popular area your house will sell. That you can save thousands using an online agent. I could go on. It is very easy to assume that this is where the line is drawn, and many people are taking this perspective when thinking of selling. We feel very differently. When we start the journey of selling your home, we are taking on a huge commitment. We understand it is the most important asset you will ever own and therefore should be handled with the appropriate care and responsibility. When an offer is accepted or a sold board goes up, it does not mean your house is sold. The reality, as we know, is very different. According

to RICS, a THIRD of house sales fall through. This staggering statistic demonstrates that agreeing a sale is merely the first stage. It is the nurturing of that sale, by an experienced professional, that gets it to completion. Many people are unaware that this process can often take up to three months and it is during these complex negotiations that an agent earns their fee. If your agent is charging upfront fees to do a job that they cannot guarantee will complete this is wrong. We are here to take you through a process, providing our support and expertise at every stage and are paid when we have provided that service. We believe in our standards and are extremely proud of our reputation. If you are considering a move, we would be delighted to hear from you and discuss our service further.

New Build Gains Ground Activity in the housebuilding sector has continued to increase over the last six months in the wake of the election and improvements in economic trends. Low interest rates and the ongoing success of the Help to Buy scheme, coupled with improved confidence in business and job security, has boosted the new homes market. Demand remains high for good locations and quality schemes, with purchasers and developers ready to commit to the region more than ever. We are very excited to be involved with a number of new homes schemes which feature in this edition of the magazine, whilst also working on several projects coming to the market later in the year. Property types range from executive detached houses at La Sagesse, superb apartments in Ponteland village and fabulous coastal retreats located close to the beach in Beadnell. Our ability to work with

developers to analyse buyer profiles and trends enables us to assist our clients in meeting demand and ensuring sales success. As well as the owner-occupier market improving, we have also seen the return of the property investor, both on a large and small scale. Property is once again seen as a sound investment for those looking for good capital growth, particularly as the current returns seem to outstrip the banks. The appeal of a new build property for investment is high at present – allowing the buyer to be sure of costs, as well as benefit from construction warranties. Our impartial advice has helped many investors to secure the right property which reflects their required risk and return. Whether you are new to property or a long time investor seeking new opportunities, we would welcome the opportunity to advise you.

Caring FOR A

COMMUNITY

JEREMY MIDDLETON

IS WELL KNOWN FOR MAKING A BIG IMPACT IN THE NORTH EAST, IN THE WORLDS OF BUSINESS, POLITICS AND PHILANTHROPY.

SO, IT WAS

only natural that when it came to his charity work abroad, he wanted to make as much of an impression as possible. “I was looking for something that would make a sustainable difference rather than just making a one-off donation,” he explains, “where my family and I could get a bit more involved instead of simply writing a cheque. “By chance I was contacted by World Vision who were doing research into how they could encourage people to donate more. “I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT WOULD We worked up a different concept, MAKE A SUSTAINABLE DIFFERENCE RATHER which was to add to the idea of sponsoring a child by looking at THAN JUST MAKING A ONE-OFF DONATION,” HE doing it on a much larger scale by EXPLAINS, “WHERE MY FAMILY AND I COULD sponsoring a community.” GET A BIT MORE INVOLVED INSTEAD OF SIMPLY Jeremy runs investment company WRITING A CHEQUE. Middleton Enterprises as well as serving on the board of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership. He has spoken out on the issue of elected mayors, urging the region not to lose an opportunity because of local politics and may even decide to run himself if the position does arise. He has been sponsoring a community in Sangailu, Eastern Kenya for two years. “It’s an utterly impoverished community where water supply was in extreme shortage and they had to travel very long distances to get water. Sanitation is terrible, health outcomes are dreadful, mortality rates are very high and education levels are very low. It’s a subsistence living and they’re in a position where they can’t break out of extreme poverty in this fragile environment. “It’s also a place with a fair degree of risk. It’s just over the border from Somalia and the Foreign Office is currently advising against all travel there.”

Jeremy’s sponsorship has paid for a team of local people who are focused on providing a supply of fresh, clean water, improving sanitation and medical conditions as well as introducing a programme of economic development. “Economic growth is all about what works for the local community,” he says. “In this instance, we’ve introduced a better strain of goat, believe it or not. These goats give more milk. We’ve been able to quantify that this improves the educational performance of the children. “It’s a classic economic programme that wasn’t happening and it wasn’t happening because none of the world agencies were going there. No one would invest there because it’s fragile so there’s a risk you might not succeed.” Jeremy and his daughter Lucy visited Sangailu to see exactly how far their money was stretching. “We feel we’re really getting something out of this as a family. We discussed whether we would support the project as a family, we agreed to back it, we kept in touch with how it’s progressing, we agreed the targets, we see the results, we’ve been out there and we’ll be going again.” The entrepreneur describes his visit as one of the most extraordinary experiences he has had. “You have to spend hours and hours in the back of a truck just to get there because there are no decent roads. When you do, your arrival is a big deal. Everyone comes out and sings and there are lots of speeches. “The things you see are extraordinary. You see children who walk ten miles to school and ten miles back because they desperately want education. We went to a school where children with disabilities are not integrated. Before, it was considered shameful to have a child with a disability and they were kept in the hut. So, to see them have an opportunity for education, social interaction and hope for the future is a remarkable thing. “We have many problems in the “YOU HAVE TO SPEND HOURS AND HOURS IN THE UK. But when you see the scale and BACK OF A TRUCK JUST TO GET THERE BECAUSE nature of the problems in this part THERE ARE NO DECENT ROADS. WHEN YOU DO, of the world, it’s a big shock to the YOUR ARRIVAL IS A BIG DEAL. EVERYONE COMES system. But, there are so many happy OUT AND SINGS AND THERE ARE LOTS people, who are incredibly positive OF SPEECHES. and have a real can-do attitude.”

www.sandersonyoung.co.uk

“IT WORKS FOR US BECAUSE WE FEEL THAT OUR MONEY GOES A LONG WAY. THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOTHING SO YOU CAN SEE WHAT THEY’RE GETTING AND WHERE THE MONEY IS GOING…

Each community project is carried out in a completely bespoke way, working with residents to come up with a programme which they believe in, buy into and support.” While it may seem daunting to transform an entire community, Jeremy says: “It works for us because we feel that our money goes a long way. These are people who have nothing so you can see what they’re getting and where the money is going, as opposed to giving it to a large charity, which is fine, but you don’t know exactly what your money has gone on.” Jeremy believes that there could be individuals who are currently supporting one or several children through World Vision who could be keen to sponsor a community. Equally, the scheme could work for businesses, community groups or organisations to give them a focus for their charity work. “You don’t have to be Bill Gates to feel like Bill Gates,” he says. “To be in a position to say ‘I made that happen’ is incredible.”

of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobites in 1745 brought to an end the long struggle between England and Scotland and border counties such as Northumberland, which had been a battlefield for a thousand years, suddenly found themselves far from any fighting. The end of the Anglo-Scottish Wars marked the beginning of a long period of prosperity for The Borders and nowhere is this more apparent than in Northumberland’s domestic architecture. Houses in rural areas no longer had to be fortified ‘bastles’ and Northumbrians could begin constructing the comfortable country houses that had long been a feature of southern England. Though this is a modern home, built in 2006-2008, the exterior exhibits a strong Georgian influence and you can easily imagine Jane Austen’s coach travelling along the graceful gravel drive that sweeps between the property’s six acres of manicured lawns and majestic trees. The drive ends in a full size carriage circle in front of the brick and stone façade that boasts all the motifs you’d expect to see in a masterpiece by 18th Century architect John Dobson. There’s a portico with Doric columns and a beautiful arched window topped by a triangular Greek pediment. The main house is flanked by two wings, to the left is a single storey stone conservatory whilst to the right is a two storey annex with a triple garage below and a guest suite above. refuses to be called a fashion designer because, in his own words, he does not follow fashion trends. Instead he seeks the inspiration for his male and female collections from historical figures and the practical clothing of the past. “For me the finished garment comes first and I choose my manufacturers very carefully to ensure that the fabrics, cut and tailoring all combine to produce the best garments possible,” Nigel tells me when I meet him at his Newcastle based Garden House design studio. Of course many fashion designers strive to achieve this but there’s an additional element to Nigel’s philosophy which makes his collections enduringly unique in the ephemeral world of fashion. “My aim is to create timeless styles that have the quality to last, get better with age and are still relevant in years to come. What I want is clothing that people can wear for a lifetime then pass down to their children,” Nigel adds. In an industry where style is supposed to change every six months, Nigel’s statement about permanence is a breath of fresh air and a simple glance at his latest collections is proof that he has more than succeeded in his ambitions. For the uninitiated, Nigel Cabourn is the genius behind the Authentic, Mainline and Lybro brands and the prime inspiration for this year’s Autumn-Winter clothing is Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Vivian Fuch’s 1955 Trans-Antarctic expedition. To achieve the authenticity that is the essential elemental of his work, Nigel has taken the book Crossing the Antarctic, written by expedition member George Lowe, and the experiences of modern polar explorer/historian Dr Huw Lewis-Jones as his design influences. Earlier this year Dr Huw visited Nigel’s studio in the company of Martin Hartley, one of the world’s best adventure photographers, “MY AIM IS TO CREATE TIMELESS and he brought with him a STYLES THAT HAVE THE QUALITY TO selection of the original clothing worn by the Fuch’s team. << Battle of Britain’s 75th anniversary, the military theme is particularly noticeable in Nigel’s more formal menswear. The DB Jacket has been finished in RAF Blue and styled after the tunics worn by ‘The Few’ whilst the Farm Pants, inspired by the workwear popular between the wars, recalls the lives of those who served on the Home Front. All these garments can be worn with Nigel’s range of parkas, waistcoats, work shirts and sweaters which are available in either army green, navy blue or RAF blue. Besides polar expeditions, many of Nigel’s 2015 garments have been inspired by the military uniforms and workwear produced by the original firm of Lybro. This Liverpool based company was a famous name in British clothing from the 1920s until its demise in the 1970s. True to his commitment to preserving Britain’s rich textile history, Nigel has acquired the rights to this brand and you can expect to see more clothing released under the Lybro name in the spring of 2016. Speaking of famous names in UK Clothing, Nigel is also collaborating with the Fred Perry Company to produce a range of casual wear inspired by the sports clothing of the immediate pre and post war periods. Nigel’s 1952 Pique shirts are modern interpretations of the classic garment designed by 1930s tennis star Fred Perry (the last Briton to win Wimbledon before Andy Murray) whilst the peerless Goal Keepers Roll Neck wouldn’t look out of place in the 1953 ‘Stanley Matthews’ Cup Final! In addition to the above, Nigel’s Mainline menswear is

FOR BEERS EVERYONE KNOWS THAT RED WINE GOES WITH MEAT AND WHITE WITH FISH BUT WHAT ABOUT SERVING A TRADITIONAL CASK ALE WITH ROAST BEEF? NEIL GORDON SAMPLES SOME SPECIAL BEERS FROM THE REGION’S BEST KNOWN

MICRO-BREWERIES

SANDHILL, NEWCASTLE

THE HOP & CLEAVER

AND DISCOVERS THERE’S A LOT MORE TO BEER AND FOOD PAIRINGS THAN A PIE AND A PINT…

If you thought the only beer to serve with barbecued food was pseudo-Australian lager think again. In the Southern States of the USA barbecuing is almost a religion and the cognoscenti of chargrills from California to the Carolinas insist on drinking beer from their local micro-brewery with their burgers and buffalo wings. Now The Hop & Cleaver on Newcastle’s Quayside has brought the classic American tailgate party to Tyneside and in addition to their own seasonal beers brewed on the premises, such as the award winning Teesside Porter, they have an extensive selection of bottled craft beers to accompany their succulent spare ribs and perfect pulled pork: • ANCHOR – this light and hoppy Californian lager is a fantastic companion for lighter BBQ dishes such as chargrilled chicken. • BROOKLYN – this traditional brown ale has the power to punch through stronger BBQ flavours such as heavily seasoned marinated ribs. • SCHERELENKERLA – this German lager boasts a subtle smoky aftertaste that’s the perfect partner for pork grilled over wood chips such as hickory or mesquite. • CAMDEN – lemon and bergamot are used to flavour Earl Grey tea but here they give this easy drinking lager a distinctive citrus edge that cuts through the juiciest cheeseburger.

WYLAM BREWERY

HEDDON-ON-THE-WALL, NORTHUMBERLAND The Tyne Valley’s oldest and best known micro-brewery may be on the point of moving to larger premises in Newcastle but I’m certain they’ll continue producing their range of handcrafted beers with as much care and attention to detail as the Stevensons put into their locomotives. Speaking of the Father of the Railways, I always found that Wylam’s Rocket Ale, named after George and Robert’s most famous engine, went extremely well with the rich sauces of French food. Whenever I dined at Bouchon (the excellent Hexham Bistro that serves both) I always ordered a pint or two of Rocket rather than a bottle of wine. Though this old favourite has now been joined by lots of new beers in the Wylam range, including the award winning Jakehead IPA (recently voted hottest beer of 2015), the ability to go well with food is a recurring theme with Wylam beers:

Of course I barely scratched the surface of the fabulous food friendly cask and bottled beers produced by the North East’s microbreweries. All of the establishments have many more beers in their cellars than I can list here and you can explore their complete portfolios (and find your nearest stockist) on their websites:

MASHAM, NORTH YORKSHIRE

BLACK SHEEP BREWERY

www.blacksheepbrewery.com www.wylambrewery.co.uk www.hopandcleaver.com

• COLLINGWOOD 4.1% ABV - named after Nelson’s second in command at Trafalgar, Collingwood is the new flagship beer from Wylam Brewery and its sweet tangerine and fresh pinewood flavours demand to be paired with fresh fish and seafood. My personal indulgence is a pint of Collingwood with a dozen Lindisfarne oysters. • GOLD TANKARD 4.0% ABV – this perennial Wylam favourite may be light and fruity but it’s robust enough to take on strong tasting dishes. Try it with your favourite curry instead of lager and see how the fresh, clean flavours from the Williamette hops cut through the different spices. • HAXAN BLACK WIT 6.2% ABV – this is not the most alcoholic beer produced by Wylam (that honour goes to the 7.5% ABV Flannel Hammer) but I find Haxan’s dark blackcurrant flavours are a better partner for winter stews and game dishes.

I have to confess that Black Sheep has been my beer of choice ever since Paul Theakston left his family’s historic brewery in Masham to set up his own concern in the same town (hence the name ‘black sheep’). For those who have never tried Paul’s market leading beers, I can confirm that most work extremely well with traditional pub grub and my preferred pairing is a pint of Black Sheep Bitter with a really good Cumberland sausage and mash. Alternatively, why not try one of Black Sheep’s other exemplary beers with these foods: • GOLDEN SHEEP 3.9% ABV - this light cask ale is brewed with First Gold hops and the result is a sophisticated beer with subtle, citrus flavours that form a fantastic partnership with seafood especially white fish, such as sea bass, and shellfish such as mussels. • BLACK SHEEP SPECIAL ALE 4.4% ABV – this is a slightly stronger cask ale than the bitter mentioned above and its full bodied flavours, provided by lots of malt and Golding Hops, go well with red meat dishes and cheeses, particularly Wensleydale and Stilton. • RIGGWELTER 5.7% ABV - this muscular bottled beer is the obvious partner for strongly seasoned game dishes and pungent cheeses, however the truly daring might like to pair Riggwelter’s dark chocolate and espresso flavours with rich deserts and puddings.

MANY PARENTS WILL CONSIDER LENDING OR GIVING MONEY TO THEIR CHILD TO USE AS A DEPOSIT TO

PURCHASE A PROPERTY.

consideration is given to the terms on which the money is provided, the excitement of purchasing their child’s first home taking priority. This area is, however, fraught with difficulties. All parties must think through the consequences and take appropriate advice before any money is provided. Typically there are three ways for parents to help their child: an outright gift, an interest free loan or as an investment. The first and last have tax consequences. If money is provided as an outright gift, should the parent not survive 7 years, the gift may be subject to inheritance tax. If money is provided as an investment, then depending on the circumstances, the parent may have to pay Capital Gains Tax if the value of their capital investment increases. In all circumstances it is vital to reach an agreement and establish a formal legal document to prevent confusion and distress in the future, especially if circumstances change. People naturally don’t like to think the worse will happen, so don’t plan for it. All eventualities should be considered at the outset, so everybody is clear what will happen should the worst occur in the future. Consideration should be given to the following questions: What happens if any party dies? What if the child marries? What if the child and their spouse/partner separate or divorce? What if the parent needs the money back? If the worst should happen and the child died before the parent, the parent could find the money is inherited by someone they don’t feel should receive the money. If the child didn’t have a Will, under the Intestacy Rules the money may find its way back to the parent. If the gift had been part of the parent’s Inheritance Tax planning then the return of any such gift could undo this. Parents also need to consider whether they TYPICALLY THERE ARE THREE WAYS would have sufficient funds to live on after FOR PARENTS TO HELP THEIR CHILD: AN the gift is made, including whether they OUTRIGHT GIFT, AN INTEREST FREE LOAN would have funds to obtain care at their OR AS AN INVESTMENT. THE FIRST AND LAST preferred care home should they need HAVE TAX CONSEQUENCES. it in the future. Parents should therefore

OFTEN LITTLE

consider whether a gift is the most appropriate way to provide the funds, or whether they should retain some entitlement to the money by providing it to their children as a loan or as an investment in the property. Most parents will consider what should happen if their child separates from their partner, accepting there is a big difference between giving or lending money to their child if they are married or starting up a home with a partner. In these circumstances the risk of “losing” some or all of the money increases considerably. In the absence of a formal legal agreement, parents could find that an informal agreement about the money is superseded or overruled, either with or without the child’s consent. How the child and their partner choose to hold the property purchased could have an immediate effect on such an agreement. In these circumstances it is critical to obtain legal advice, so as to ensure all eventualities are considered. Protecting the money provided in these circumstances will also provide protection should the child or their partner become bankrupt. The same consideration needs to be given by partners purchasing property with disproportionate amounts of money. The consequences of failing to reach an agreement and properly documenting that decision now could result in a dispute arising in the future, which is often time consuming and costly for all parties. The parties also risk the possibility that a Court may decide who is entitled to the money in a way that differs from that which the parties intended. to cook with Neptune’s bounty, there are no less than four first class fish retailers on or near the waterfront. At Clifford’s Fort there’s Taylor’s Seafood, which offers the largest range of fresh fish for sale in the North East, and Lindisfarne Seafoods which, as the name suggests, specialises in oysters farmed in the Lindisfarne Nature Reserve. A few streets away, on Union Quay, there’s Wm Wright which is a delightful grocers, deli, sweetshop and café that’s been run by the same family since The War and does the best bacon sandwiches. Last but not least, another family business on Union Quay is Seaview Fisheries, which has been selling the freshest fish straight off the trawler since 1987. For those of us who can’t or won’t cook, North Shields boasts an array of superlative restaurants, all of which make the most of the trawlers’ daily catch. The former Dolphin pub in Low Lights has become The Staith House and chef Jon Calton, who hails from neighbouring South Shields, has brought the skills he learned working with Michelin starred chefs to Tyneside. Besides fresh fish, John’s imaginative menus offer the very best beef, lamb, goat (!) and vegetables sourced from Northumberland farms and his style applies modern techniques to tried and trusted favourites. Just try Jon’s grilled North Sea mackerel or sirloin of Ryal Farm beef to understand what I mean. When the sun goes down, Graeme’s dinner menus range from the wonderfully flavoursome Wild Sea Trout to the utterly sinful Dark Chocolate Sorbet. Third in my trio of new North Shields eateries of note is The River Café on The Tyne which has survived the financial crisis of two years ago and continues to serve top quality dishes. Now owned by Paul Scott and Michelle Dickie, who learned their restaurateur’s art working with the North East’s culinary superstar Terry Laybourne, The River Café goes from strength to strength and has won two AA WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN, GRAEME’S DINNER Rosettes as well as the prestigious MENUS RANGE FROM THE WONDERFULLY Michelin Bib Gourmand Award FLAVOURSOME WILD SEA TROUT TO THE three years in a row. CUBA

THE LAST COLD WAR COMMUNIST STATE IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE TO MAKE PEACE WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA…

Cuban Revolutionaries, with US help, ended 400 years of Spanish colonial rule but the price of independence was high. For the next 60 years a succession of brutal dictators looked the other way as American Big Business re-colonised Cuban industry and American mobsters turned Havana, Cuba’s historic capital, into a new Sodom. By 1959 many Cubans had had enough of the imported corruption and crime that blighted their island paradise and a failed baseball player named Fidel Castro led the revolution that drove all Americans, both good and bad, out of Cuba.

IN 1898

Coming at the height of the Cold War, the defection of America’s nearest and most important Caribbean ally to Communism was a severe blow to US prestige, and Soviet Russia’s attempt to site nuclear weapons in Cuba precipitated the infamous 1963 Missile Crisis, but the resulting isolation from the West has helped save Cuba from the worst excesses of Globalisation. The streets of Havana are, for the moment, mercifully free of Starbucks and McDonalds but perhaps the best known examples of the Cuban time-warp are the incongruous 1950s American cars that ply Havana’s waterfront as taxis.

After Castro seized power, the US imposed a strict ban on all trade with Cuba so owners of pre-revolution ‘Yank Tanks’ couldn’t replace their ageing vehicles with later models. Soviet Russia failed to produce enough Ladas to meet Cuban demand so the redoubtable Chevrolets, Fords and Dodges were kept on Cuba’s roads long after their American cousins went to the scrapheap. Besides preserving classic cars, the lack of American (or Russian) investment has helped keep Vieja Habana (Old Havana) unspoilt and any trip to Cuba should begin with an exploration of this fascinating jumble of streets and squares.

…PERHAPS THE BEST KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE CUBAN TIME-WARP ARE THE INCONGRUOUS 1950S AMERICAN CARS THAT PLY HAVANA’S WATERFRONT AS TAXIS.

Founded in 1514, Havana is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas and this UNESCO World Heritage site boasts over 900 historic sites. These range from the neo-classical Museum of the Revolution (once the old Presidential Palace) and the baroque Cathedral to the three 16th Century fortresses that guard the harbour. The Calle Obispo, which is the main street through Old Havana, is also the centre of the city’s cultural life and there are a growing number of art galleries, shops, Salsa bars, cafes and restaurants to explore. To experience Havana in its 1950s heyday take one of the aforementioned classic car taxis along Malecón Boulevard. This elegant esplanade was built by the Americans in 1901 and runs for five miles along the northern edge of the harbour to link the old US Embassy in the Vedado business district with the famous residential area of the Miramar. Once home to Cuba’s elite, many of Miramar’s original buildings now lie derelict but Havana’s new capitalists are slowly turning the ruined villas and HAVANA IS ALSO THE CENTRE OF THE CITY’S CULTURAL LIFE AND THERE ARE A GROWING abandoned warehouses into chic offices, hotels NUMBER OF ART GALLERIES, SHOPS, SALSA and restaurants. BARS, CAFES AND RESTAURANTS TO EXPLORE. The Miramar also boasts several relics of Cuba’s Communist past such as the monstrous Soviet Embassy (built in 1988) and the cavernous 5,500 seater Karl Marx Theatre which has hosted acts as diverse as Liberace and The Manic Street Preachers. Since the opening of the Miramar Trade Centre in the 1990s this area has become the engine driving Havana’s belated modernisation but for the time being you can still watch the city’s

fishermen cast their lines from the seawall. The ongoing transformation of the Miramar is symbolic of the new Cuba and the speed of Havana’s gentrification can only increase. Though US citizens continue to face severe restrictions when visiting Cuba, the recent restoration of diplomatic relations with the USA means it won’t be long before the Almighty Dollar changes this unique corner of the Caribbean forever. Happily there’s still time to visit the island that time forgot and whether your passion is for classic cars, colonial architecture or authentic Caribbean night life you’ll find there’s much more to Cuba than cigars.

At the time of writing, direct air travel from the USA to Cuba was restricted to a weekly charter flight from New York (JFK), however Jet2 offers regular direct flights from Newcastle to New York (Newark) from £292 (one way pp) and Air Canada offers connecting scheduled flights to Havana via Toronto costing between £140 and £360 (one way pp). legislation has caused the entire industry to turn on its head and we have had many hurdles to overcome”. The first major impact to the market came with the Government’s amendments to the Deregulation Bill in February, affecting retaliatory evictions and tenancy deposits. It is not as easy as just finding a tenant and moving in. There are so many tests and guarantees needed, as well as legal hurdles.” The lettings sector has faced a lot of stick, and often this is justified, says Gail. “It is so important to stay at the top of your game. The lettings market is a minefield and these changes have certainly proven that the strong, knowledgeable, reliable agents have ridden the storm and it has left exposed those with less experience or professionalism”. Gail and her team do not simply source tenants, they provide a full service which has been built up through many years of experience, repeat business and a passion for the market. “I love what I do and I believe that to offer the best service we have to keep on top of this ever changing market”, enthuses Gail. “It shocks me when “IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO STAY AT THE TOP landlords are not made aware OF YOUR GAME. “WE HAVE HAD VERY GOOD LEVELS OF ENQUIRIES THIS YEAR FOR EXECUTIVE, HIGH END PROPERTIES, PARTICULARLY IN JESMOND AND GOSFORTH. MANY OF THESE CORPORATE CLIENTS COME DIRECTLY TO US, RATHER THAN USING RELOCATION AGENTS… service we offer to our clients”. With change has certainly come a new market, and an exciting one at that. The return of the property investor, both large and small, has seen uplift in the stock levels coming to the market. “I have appraised several rental portfolios for clients in recent months, many of which will be coming to the market later in the year or early in 2016”, says Gail. “This will expand our rental offering and is focused largely on the city centre professional tenant, as well as core areas of Gosforth and Jesmond”. The luxury market has also seen a resurgence. “We have had very good levels of enquiries this year for executive, high end properties, particularly in Jesmond and Gosforth. Many of these corporate clients come directly to us, rather than using relocation agents, and therefore we have built up unrivalled links throughout the region”, adds Gail. “We also work very well with our Rare! sales office in order to offer properties on a low key basis for rent”. It is clear the Residential Lettings department, overseen by Gail, has certainly ridden the storm of 2015, and look forward to continued growth and expansion for years to come. DISCUSSES THE TRENDS EMERGING IN THE SECTOR THROUGHOUT THE REGION. homes market is seeing exciting times. Rooted with support from Government, we are seeing a great backing for developments throughout the region from developers large and small, and a confidence is certainly growing for investment in the North East’s housing supply. The past six months have seen further surges post election, and we are delighted to be supporting a range of developers with their proposals for some very exciting schemes. With an improvement in confidence and greater economic stability, we are seeing more independent, niche developers re-entering the market, which is extremely exciting, as we do need to see a greater variation in the standard housing model that has dominated the market in previous years. From eco housing to architecturally ground-breaking designs, there is certainly a buzz around how the North East can rival many major city at the forefront of development and regeneration, which is much needed. We have seen fantastic changes to many areas of inner city Newcastle, with the development of Science City, Central Station and Shieldfield, and we are now finding that developers have been inspired by this contemporary cultural vision for our region. Sanderson Young are delighted to have been appointed on the sale of a revolutionary coastal scheme, which will be launched next year, by a developer who THE PAST SIX MONTHS HAVE SEEN FURTHER has never before offered SURGES POST ELECTION, AND WE ARE a housing product in DELIGHTED TO BE SUPPORTING A RANGE OF the region. and revive a community, which is an extremely thrilling prospect to be part of. Pioneering design has also caused the market to evolve and we have been stunned by the architectural advancements in this sector. Energy efficiency has been a focus for many developers and has created fantastic products, such as the Trisvelhus by Esh offering, which Sanderson Young have been supporting in the region and will help bring to market an extremely unique scheme in 2016. This is a concept that combines the best of Swedish design and luxury finishing with cutting edge building techniques and heating technology. The large-scale house builder has certainly also stepped up to provide very good quality housing, and we have been encouraged by the improvements to this market. The development of La Sagesse in Jesmond, where Sanderson Young have acted as the supporting sales agent for David Wilson Homes, has been a cuttingedge development which will undoubtedly change the luxury market offering and reinforce premium values in the region. Whilst there is always a place for such large-scale schemes, we are delighted to be working with more niche developments from independent house builders, new to the market. Entering a somewhat unknown market can be challenging, which is why we aid many developers from day one and offer a full service support, from initial land and development appraisals by chartered surveyors, marketing and support from our in-house media department to full sales support and mortgage services. Our staff members have all been fully trained to work on new developments and we have forged fantastic links in the community to forge a reputation as the leading new homes agent in the region. We would be delighted to discuss any potential opportunities and should you require a land appraisal or have a development prospect you wish to discuss in confidence, please contact Janet Hopkinson, New Homes Director on 0191 2233500 or janet.hopkinson@sandersonyoung.co.uk

NEIL GORDON HAS SOME IMPORTANT NEWS OF HOW NORTH EAST BUSINESSES CAN BE PART OF A FANTASTIC

PUBLIC ART EVENT

THAT’S DESIGNED TO ATTRACT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF VISITORS TO OUR REGION OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD. 2012, to mark the 30th anniversary of the classic film The Snowman, adapted from Raymond Briggs iconic picture book, Channel 4 (in association with independent production company Lupus Films) screened a sequel, The Snowman™ and The Snowdog which captured all the magical charm of the original. Now St Oswald’s Hospice is planning to use the lovable Snowdog character in an extraordinary public art event that will also raise thousands of pounds for its vital work. The event, which will be held over ten weeks during the autumn of 2016, will see local, regional and nationally acclaimed artists decorate up to fifty blank sculptures of the Snowdog which will then be displayed in prominent sites around Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. The plan is to make these unique artworks accessible by public transport and people will be able to locate each one with the help of an online map and mobile app. To bring the Snowdogs to the region, St Oswald’s are working closely with Penguin Ventures (a Penguin Random House company), Channel 4 and creative producers Wild in Art who have organised similar events worldwide. Previous Wild in Art exhibitions have brought significant benefits to the local economy by providing invaluable media exposure for the businesses and cities involved, coupled with increasing footfall and dwell time in areas where the sculptures are located. Naturally St Oswald’s are hoping these exceptional benefits will encourage the North East business community to support the Snowdog project. The principal way companies can become involved with this incredibly exciting event is to sponsor one of the painted sculptures. In return, the company’s name will be displayed prominently on their respective sponsor Snowdog’s plinth and in other associated media promoting the event. Sponsors will also be invited to the glittering launch party, which will be held in early November this year, where they’ll later be matched with the artists chosen to decorate the sculptures, and the equally prestigious charity auction, to be held at the close of the event, where each Snowdog will be sold to the highest bidder.

ON CHRISTMAS EVE

• 50% OF VISITORS TO NORWICH’S GOGOGORILLAS VISITED SPECIFIC TRAIL VENUES BECAUSE OF THE EVENT • 71% OF VISITORS TO NORWICH STAYED LONGER IN THE CITY BECAUSE OF GOGOGORILLAS! • BRISTOL’S WOW! GORILLAS ATTRACTED OVER £4.5 MILLION OF POSITIVE PRINT AND BROADCAST MEDIA COVERAGE • BRISTOL’S WOW! GORILLAS ENGAGED 1.7M PEOPLE VIA SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITY

www.sandersonyoung.co.uk

Companies can also sponsor schools to take part in a little Snowdog trail, where local school children can decorate scaled down sculptures, which will be displayed in their own mini trail across the region giving a further boost to visitor numbers to these destinations. Together, the two trails will offer ten terrific weeks of high quality public art and Sanderson Young, a long-time supporter of St Oswald’s Hospice, has been one of the first North East businesses to sign up for a Snowdog. Managing Director Duncan Young said: “St Oswald’s has produced some highly innovative fundraising events over the past few years but I think the two Snowdog Trails may be the best yet. The sculptures will be a superb way to raise awareness of the essential work being done by the hospice, whilst also promoting both the work of local artists and encouraging people to visit different parts of our region. I’m enormously proud to contribute to this scheme by sponsoring a Snowdog and I would urge other businesses to get on board before all the sculptures are booked up!”

If you are interested in sponsoring a St Oswald’s Hospice Snowdog, please contact Jane Hogan on 0191 285 0063 extension 207 or email JaneHogan@stoswaldsuk.org. You can find out more at www.greatnorthsnowdogs.co.uk

BUT NONE ARE RESTING ON THEIR LAURELS. NEWCASTLE’S ROYAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL, THE HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, WESTFIELD AND DAME ALLAN’S SCHOOLS ARE ALL INVESTING HEAVILY IN NEW FACILITIES WHILST IN THE TYNE VALLEY MOWDEN HALL SCHOOL HAS A NEW HEADMASTER AT THE HELM…

WESTFIELD INDEPENDENT DAY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

Westfield was founded in 1960 by a group of visionary parents who saw the need for a new type of school offering girls a broader education than the traditional curriculum. Now based on a six acre site in Gosforth, Westfield’s record of innovation and excellence continues to this day and the school’s ambition to provide girls aged 3 to 18 with the very best facilities is particularly apparent in the latest refurbishment programme. The initial phase, which was completed over the summer, included the full refurbishment of the main building and the relocation of the Senior House administration offices and classrooms inside. Work is ongoing to replace the Senior House roof whilst the new Sixth Form Centre is scheduled for completion by this year’s October half term. When finished, this superb building will provide a series of versatile spaces where the students can learn, grow and express themselves. This work builds on the £150,000 investment in the school’s IT infrastructure, completed earlier this year, which has greatly enhanced all the students’ learning experience. On the sporting front, the school now boasts five all-weather tennis courts and last but not least, the girls eat in the brand new Camellia Dining Room. Though Westfield is one of the newer schools in Newcastle, the staff and governors’ commitment to investing in the future of North East girls remains second to none and prospective parents planning to attend the 17th October Open Day are bound to be impressed.

EDUCATION

DAME ALLAN’S SCHOOLS

Dame Allan’s is a ‘Diamond School’, meaning it is a group of four schools with a mixed Junior school for Nursery to Year 6, separate Boys’ and Girls’ Schools for Years 7-11 and a co-educational Sixth Form. Dame Allan’s Schools’ unique approach to education began in 1705 when the widow of a tobacco merchant left money to educate 40 boys and, unusually for the time, 20 girls. Fast forward 310 years and a generous £250,000 grant from the prestigious Reece Foundation will ensure the Schools continue the fine tradition of academic innovation begun by Dame Eleanor Allan. The goals of the Reece Foundation, which was established in 2007 by notable North East engineer and philanthropist Dr Alan Reece, are to support the region’s economy by promoting engineering, technology and manufacturing. Accordingly, the recent donation has allowed Dame Allan’s to embark upon their ambitious £500,000 project to create an ultra-modern Design & Technology Centre which will give all pupils access to the latest equipment, such as 3D printers, and will allow them to benefit from specialist teaching. Perhaps most importantly of all, the new centre will also be open to local link primary schools in Dame Allan’s master class programme so children from a wide variety of backgrounds will be able to make use of this important facility.

NEWCASTLE HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

In September last year Central High and Church High, two independent girls’ day schools based in Jesmond, merged to form Newcastle High School for Girls. Over the last twelve months, the new school has continued Central and Church’s century old tradition of providing girls aged 3-18 with a first class all round education and plans to transform the former Church High site on Tankerville Terrace into a state-of-the art, senior school campus were granted planning permission earlier this year. The multi-million pound project will not only retain and refurbish Church High’s historic, red brick buildings it will also construct a new, three-storey, contemporary styled structure that will house an assembly hall and performance space, a purpose-built dining room, a fitness suite, dance and drama studios, music rooms, science laboratories and general classrooms. This extraordinary building, which will be built in the grounds, will also include a rooftop terrace for outdoor learning. When work finishes in September 2016, the nursery and junior schools will remain at the recently refurbished Chapman House site in Jesmond but all 700 senior and Sixth Form pupils will move to the new campus on Tankerville Terrace. Parents can therefore be confident that this ambitious project will not only allow the whole school to expand and meet the needs of its 21st century curriculum, it will also ensure that Newcastle High School for Girls continues to promote and lead in the education of girls for many years to come.

EDUCATION

NEWCASTLE ROYAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Founded in 1545, the North East’s oldest, independent day school moved to Jesmond in 1906 and over the years the site has acquired a fine selection of buildings ranging from historic Edwardian classrooms to a state-of-the-art Science & Technology Centre, a full size theatre with professional sound and lighting systems and a recording studio. The school can therefore offer its 1,200 girls and boys the very best facilities and the latest development programme will ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the most modern educational environment. This first phase of this three year, multi-million pound building project added a modern reception space to the front of the main building, extended the Junior School, enlarged the kitchens and created a new classics department. The second phase of the work has focused on sport and added a spectacular new sports facility which opened its doors to students and staff in time for the new

MOWDEN HALL SCHOOL

academic year. This grand new building adds a new six-lane, 25 metre swimming pool, a second sports hall, a fitness centre, weights room, aerobics studio, offices and changing rooms to the school’s already impressive sporting facilities. This exciting new addition couldn’t be more timely; there has been a distinct feeling that sport is “in the air” at the RGS with the Scottish team using the school as their official training base for the first round of the Rugby World Cup. The final phase will see the demolition of the old, outdated swimming pool on the corner of Eskdale Terrace and Lambton Road and the opening of yet another new building. As well as extending the aforementioned Science & Technology Centre, this new structure will boast a library, lecture theatre, seminar rooms, IT hub and care centre to ensure that the RGS can meet all its pupils’ academic, sporting and pastoral needs for decades to come.

Though it’s located in the heart of the Tyne Valley , Mowden Hall nursery, day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3-13 is just twenty minutes from central Newcastle and whilst its values are highly traditional there’s nothing old fashioned about Mowden Hall. New headmaster Neal Bailey, who took charge in September 2014, is determined to continue the school’s success in striking the balance between the boarding ethos and appealing to day children whilst also focusing on excellent teaching. The school is rightly proud of its recent 100% success rate in placing pupils in their first choice school and the launch of an appeal for a new Astroturf pitch reflects his ambition to grow (if that is the right word!) Mowden’s impressive sporting reputation. Neal is also committed to expanding both the Pre-prep (3-8) and Prep schools (8-13) by continuing Mowden’s aim to give every child the opportunity to achieve his or her potential within a broad range of academic, cultural and sporting pursuits. He’s also confident that the school’s high expectations for its pupils, excellent pastoral care and traditional family values all help Mowden children grow up healthy and happy. The change of headmaster can be a difficult time for a school, especially when that school has enjoyed a prolonged period of success, but Neal has taught in France as well as England so parents can rest assured that he has the skills and experience to maintain Mowden’s magnificent record of achievement.

the company that makes cars in a country renowned for robotic-style precision in all matters relies upon the skills of humans to perfect the ultimate in engineering excellence, as epitomised by the R8 sports model. It will no doubt come as a surprise to many to learn that the R8 is almost exclusively hand-built by craftsmen and women whose skills and instinctive eye for detail have been honed over generations. In an age of motoring mass production it takes 70 hours to make just one bespoke Audi R8, with more than 5,000 individual parts JUST fitted by hand, resulting in production of just 20 cars a day. Indeed, such is the vast array of options on offer that Audi is confident the chances of two cars being identical in every detail is virtually nil. By the time a customer reaches the point of placing an order for their bespoke new sportster, they will have spent many hours poring over the options for everything from steering wheels and tyres to seats and sound systems. palette personally mixed to your own specification if required. Additionally, there is eye-catching carbon for the mirrors, engine bay and the distinctive vertical side blades that house the massive air intakes to cool the mid-placed engine. Like the vehicle itself, the Audi R8 computer-controlled car configurator is among the slickest in the business. Change an option and the on-screen image is reconfigured as quickly as the car’s DSG transmission system shifts a gear. Choose the standard V10 engine and you get a power output of 540bhp, with 540Nm of torque, which translates in to a 0-60mph acceleration time of three and a half seconds, with a top speed just agonisingly short of two hundred, at 198mph. additional 20Nm of pulling power to achieve acceleration to 60mph in a mere 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 205mph.Such is the sophistication of the engine that it automatically shuts half of itself down when maximum power is not needed and it can quite happily amble along in traffic with just five cylinders working instead of ten. This maximises fuel economy and cuts exhaust emissions, although another piece of car trickery is to offer a choice of exhaust notes ranging from refined, through rasping to raucous, all achieved at the flick of a switch. In addition to the variable exhaust sound, there is a clever virtual cockpit that is fully customisable to combine functions normally associated with the central MMI screen, such as a satellite navigation system and map, with conventional instrumentation in one high resolution display directly ahead of the driver. Audi’s Connect system can transform the car into a mobile wi-fi hot spot with 4G internet to access the likes of Google Earth and Street View so occupants can recognise their surroundings and be guided to their destination. Mixing and matching the multitude of materials on offer can create a range of distinctly different interior ambiences, ranging from

nightclub to gentlemen’s club, depending upon the choice of red, beige, grey, brown or black for the Nappa leather with contrasting stitching and luxurious diamond quilting. It is even possible to dispense with leather altogether and replicate the body colour – no matter how bold – on the back of the figurehugging sculpted bucket seats. Aspiring F1 drivers are likely to opt for the impressive-looking flatbottomed three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel with its four operating satellites. There are side hand-grip areas in perforated leather with aluminium shift paddles behind, plus four satellite buttons to control the drive select function, engine start & stop, performance mode and the manual exhaust flap control. Whilst the aural attraction of the programmable exhaust is undeniable, so is the sound of the optional 550-watts B&O advanced hi-fi system with its 16-channel amplifier and 13 highperformance speakers. Music to anyone’s ears, the pleasure of building your own Audi R8 reaps financial rewards too, with such a level of individualisation increasing the sheer desirability of the product, which generates rock-solid residual values, making it a sound long-term investment.

There are 17 Maggie’s Centres located in NHS hospitals across the UK (a further five centres are currently in development and there’s also an online centre) and each is staffed by highly qualified professionals who are skilled in offering the practical help and emotional support that cancer patients and their families need. Whether it’s advice about treatment and benefits or just somewhere to have a chat and a cup of tea, Maggie’s Centres have been an essential part of cancer care since 1996. The Maggie’s Centre for the North East & Cumbria is opposite Newcastle Freeman Hospital’s Northern Centre of Cancer, and opened in 2013. The facilities include a sitting room with a kitchen, a library with access to computers and private rooms offering somewhere to hold one to one sessions or simply sit quietly. There’s also a larger space for support groups and workshops such as yoga, Tai Chi and nutrition. Outside there are landscaped gardens, two roof gardens and a selection of exercise equipment. To continue offering these services free of charge, Maggie’s relies on support from the general public. On average it costs £500,000 to keep each centre open but fortunately there are dozens of ways people can help. Here are just a few of the North East fundraising events being organised by Maggie’s this autumn so make sure you put at least one of these dates in your diary…

Friday 30th Oct, Maggie’s Centre, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle Girl’s Night In – join the staff and volunteers for plenty of pampering and cocktails in the Centre. Tickets: £5 and include a welcome drink! Wednesday 11th Nov, Cobalt Business Park, North Tyneside Fire Walk - The legendary mind over matter challenge was a huge success in 2014 and now it’s back, bigger better and hotter than ever! The Grafters Club, which is based at the Newcastle RVI’s Great North Children’s Hospital and administered by the Newcastle Healthcare Charity (reg. 502473), was founded to help children and their families cope with the physical, psychological and emotional scars caused by burn injuries. Whether their accident was recent or some time ago, the club provides ongoing support that helps young patients return to their normal daily lives and the name was chosen by the children themselves because of its association with skin grafts and hard work. It hardly needs to be said that recovering from a burn injury requires a great deal of hard work and the Grafters Club aims to minimise the negative effects of these injuries through a range of activities that help the children rebuild both their body-image and their selfconfidence. Besides opportunities to try new things and learn new skills the club organises fun events, such as the annual Christmas party, and details of all these activities, along with news of fundraising events, family days out and competitions, are featured in the twice yearly newsletter Telegraft. Besides regular meetings, the club’s main annual events are the residential Burn Camp and the family day trip. At the Burn Camp children enjoy more ambitious activities (such as archery, zip wire and wall climbing) which are also designed to boost their self-

esteem whilst they have fun. Similarly, the day trips offer the whole family a chance to enjoy a great day out together and this year club members had a fantastic trip to the Lightwater Valley theme park. The Grafters Club is totally reliant on the generosity of the general public and businesses in the North East and Cumbria to continue with its incredibly important work and any help is always gratefully received.
