&stimulus

Writing this editorial just after the March budget, I was delighted to see the

Chancellor rise up to the challenge of the country’s much needed housing supply.

I

n recent years it has been clear that the shortage of housing would lead to further problems in the future. Some proposed sites are particularly contentious because they are currently Green Belt, but we have to remember that over a period of the last 150 years many parts of the suburbs of Newcastle, and the outlying towns, have been developed, and it is a natural progression because of the expanding population and improved health leading to longer life expectancy. It is imperative that new housing stock creates good quality living environments; the focus is on our builders and our architects to inspire further generations to live in modern, efficient, economic and environmentally friendly properties. I have seen greater emphasis in recent years placed on the running costs of houses, and I know there is a huge challenge ahead for builders and service providers to create “smart and intelligent housing”, which would be cheaper to run, more efficient in its recycling, and, where possible, enhanced by renewable and cheaper energy supplies. The results of my own company in 2012 saw the first increase in turnover for 7 years created by stronger demand in the mid-price levels within the suburbs of Newcastle and in the popular outlying villages, where demand is strong. The early signs in 2013 are that this demand is expanding and pushing up to the £1 million values and just over. I was delighted to note

that in the first two months of 2013 we sold three times as many houses from our rare! office than we did in the same period in 2012, and I am very pleased that that confidence is returning. In 2013 we are very excited about the imminent launch of a number of New Homes sites; in particular The Limes at Swansfield Park in Alnwick. This scheme, run by Cussins Homes, will offer 73 beautiful homes on an elevated site overlooking this historic market town and already demand is very high with prospective purchasers waiting for these properties to be released (for further information call 01665 600170). National Builders, including Bellway and Barratt, also have some fabulous new schemes coming to the market place and we very much look forward to working with our national partners to provide a good, steady, choice of beautiful family homes. Some of the investment portfolios that we have for sale are also becoming more attractive since some of the suburbs have a real shortage of supply, and rents of flats and smaller terraced houses are nearly double what a current mortgage would be. I predict that 2013 will see a rise in demand with increasing numbers of transactions taking place in both the sales and lettings market. The government are keen to stimulate the housing market as quickly as possible, since everyone is aware of the strong housing market adding to the overall success of the economy.

We still have a number of prospective clients who want to move house but cannot buy. For those individuals we have an ever expanding range of properties to let. Gail McLean, our Lettings Manager, has been extremely busy over the last 12 months and she continues to impress clients with the speed of property lets and the quality of tenants, with Sanderson Young acting for some tremendous ‘Blue Chip’ clients more likely to look after a house in the same manner they would if it was their own. Gail would be delighted to advise and guide you through the lettings maze and is available on 0191 2233510 Our company continues to innovate through our technology, with our mobile website fitting all of the mobile devices available in the market place, as well as the iphone app and advanced technology within our main website, which is growing an ever expanding mailing list of first class buyers and tenants. We continue to innovate through our technology, impress through our marketing and photography skills, which gain great success for our clients. We very much look forward to the Spring and Summer season of 2013 and to a time when we expect to move many of our clients and see greater success with the speed of sale and the value of the properties sold. If I can assist you in any way with your property move this year please do not hesitate to let me know. Duncan Young Managing Director SANDERSON YOUNG duncan.young@sandersonyoung.co.uk 0191 2233500

aqualityservice Public perception is vital in our market, and I am always conscious of how today’s clients perceive estate agents. We are being instructed to handle the sale of a client’s most important possession – their property, and yet there are differing views on what is most important. Do you believe that by paying the lowest fee possible you will get the best return? It is imperative that, as with any business providing a service, an estate agent should only be rewarded with a sales fee once the job is done, and as a client you feel that you have achieved the best possible price for your property. At Sanderson Young we have an unrivalled reputation for achieving premium prices for property throughout the region, and offer exceptional service levels that we are extremely proud of, from initial marketing tools and photography through to a designated sales

progression service. Brand recognition and reputation is also essential, and at Sanderson Young we have a public perception of superiority and expertise in our marketplace. Our clients come to us as a first port of call, as they are already aware of the quality properties we market both for sale and to let. A clients’ home is their pride and joy, and we are here to showcase it in its best light, with enthusiasm and style in order to give an exceptional first impression. Reviewing the marketplace in 2012, Sanderson Young achieved a 15% increase in transactions on 2011. We believe that this has been achieved by our excellent sales force linked with our expert marketing techniques and continual investment in new media. renewedoptimism We have seen in recent months a renewed optimism in the market for new homes and land for development. The improvement in sentiment about current and future house prices has resulted in more activity from the house builders who have responded to increased demand and positive signs from the mortgage market. It is anticipated that the Bank of England’s Funding for Lending scheme will further boost the market and signals from the Bank of England are that base rates may be kept on hold for a prolonged period. We are working with several developers on schemes across the region and are encouraged by the number of new homes in the pipeline for the forthcoming year, with a focus on the delivery of quality family housing. Forthcoming schemes are to be launched in Low Fell,

Ponteland, Alnwick and The Ouseburn Valley, which is extremely exciting and we expect to see good sales rates. We have significant experience of working with house builders on the launch of new homes schemes and our experience in both the new and second hand sector ensures that we deliver an unrivalled service for our clients. The signs are positive and we believe that house building is essential to stimulate regional economic growth. Understanding the motivation of the buyer will be key to our continued success in the new homes market and we welcome the opportunity of working with both small developers and the larger house builder to promote new homes. FOOD

Liz Hands talks to the North East’s Michelin man about instant stardom and impending fatherhood he phone is ringing off the hook with husbands desperately trying to book a last-minute table for Valentine’s Day. They’re out of luck as there’s a waiting list as long as your arm. Wannabe kitchen staff are calling in a bid to secure a job. And suppliers are arriving to persuade the newly Michelin-starred Raby Hunt to use their produce. Amidst all this, James Close is trying to prepare for one of the busiest nights of the year. But life is certainly not going to get any quieter for the self-taught 33-year-old golfer-turned-chef as he is expecting his first child with partner Charlotte Walton in May. They have, however, a somewhat unconventional plan to make sure James can juggle the pressures of creating Michelin-starred food with the pressures of fatherhood. He will live away from his other half during the week, returning home on days off. “I’ll be at the Raby Hunt during the week and we’ve got a house around five miles away so I’ll be back home when I’m off,” he explains. “It’s not something I’m being selfish about. It’s for all our futures because

we’re right in the middle of it now. If I don’t do it this way, I won’t be giving 100 per cent and that would be when consistency would fall.” Consistency is a recurring theme, mentioned both by James and his restaurant manager Craig Malcolm. The key, they say, is making sure the plate of food that goes out on a Wednesday lunchtime is equally as good as that which leaves the pass on a Saturday night. And, when you consider that the Raby Hunt, in Summerhouse, near Darlington, is the North East’s only Michelin-starred restaurant, you can understand the importance of living up to higherthan-ever expectations.

“We’re a little family-run unit,” says Craig. “We went from having two or three tables full some lunchtimes when it would just be me and James and I’d wash the pots as well, to being full all the time.”

The Michelin stars were leaked online this year, with Michelin accidently posting the 2013 list on its own website too early, before hurriedly taking it down again. Left “feeling rather down” after the restaurant’s cellars were flooded during torrential rain, Craig says the star “has given us a whole renewed energy to push on”. Immediately, the clamour for a table at the Raby Hunt, owned by James’ parents Russell and Helene, began. “We’re a little family-run unit,” says Craig. “We went from having two or three tables full some lunchtimes when it would just be me and James and I’d wash the pots as well, to being full all the time.” Once one of the region’s best-kept secrets, now foodies far and wide have heard of the Raby Hunt. “It was instant,” says Craig. “People in the industry want to go to other Michelin-starred restaurants so, for the first two or three weeks, we were full of chefs who wanted to see what we do.” The main attraction is, of course, James’ remarkable food. And winning a Michelin star has given the chef freedom to be even more creative. “It’s allowed James to push the boundaries,” says Craig. “With the squab pigeon, for example, James took the legs and cooked them in a water bath before they were crisped up. Now you put it down and you can see people thinking ‘bloody hell, there’s a claw on the table’ but, when they eat it, it’s absolutely delicious and they can see why it’s there.” In the Michelin Guide, James’ slow-cooked pork belly with poached and roasted lobster, venison loin with caramelised cauliflower and beetroot, and rice

pudding, raspberry jam and cinnamon ice cream receive high praise. Just as remarkable as the works-of-art which come out of James’ kitchen is the story behind them. A professional golfer, James’ parents bought what was then an inn serving pub grub when he began looking for a new career. Having grown up in his mum’s B&B, The Grange, in Hamsterley Forest, James was no stranger to the industry but it was a steep learning curve to take charge of his own kitchen. “It was a big leap for my parents to make,” he says. “But they’ve been proved right. I think they just wanted me to get a job to be honest because I really didn’t know what I was going to do at one point.” Since then, James has embarked on a food odyssey, eating in the world’s best restaurants, including Noma in Denmark and El Celler in Girona, seeking inspiration, honing his techniques and developing a distinctive style of his own. Now, the Raby Hunt has found itself under the microscope since scooping a star, but James says he simply concentrates on producing good food. “I don’t feel pressure unless the food hasn’t been prepared right,” he says. “I don’t exist outside the kitchen.” But, whether James feels pressure to retain the Raby’s Michelin star, or even to add another one, he certainly places high demands on himself. “I spend every minute thinking about food,” he says. “I wake up at 2am thinking about new dishes and techniques.” And, soon, a few miles down the road, James’ other half will have her own reason for being awake in the early hours. While the Raby Hunt is now the region’s only Michelin-starred restaurant, after Durham’s Seaham Hall was stripped of its star three years ago, other North East eateries have caught the attention of the Michelin Guide’s judges. Even though the Michelin Guide is best known for its star system, these restaurants make up only five per cent of the selection. There are also those awarded Bib Gourmand status, which indicates a restaurant offering good food at moderate prices. The 2013 Michelin Guide includes 137 Bib Gourmands, three of which are in the North East. Just down the road from the Raby Hunt, in Hurworth-on-Tees, the Bay Horse has achieved a Bib Gourmand since 2010. Head chef Marcus Bennett serves up such delights as stuffed saddle of rabbit wrapped in parma ham. Main courses start at around £13. Elsewhere in the region, Newcastle’s The Broad Chare and David Kennedy’s River Café in North Shields also hold Bib Gourmands. Part of the renowned 21hospitality Group, The Broad Chare prides itself on being a “proper pub” serving “proper food” The menu includes smoked haddock, curried mussels and leeks for £16. Opened in 2011, David Kennedy’s River Café uses “French techniques with honest English ingredients.” Delights include roasted North Sea Coley with bashed roots and peppercorn sauce for £11. To gain the coveted Bib Gourmand, restaurants must serve “good cuisine at a reasonable price”. Michelin editor Rebecca Burr said: “In difficult financial times, establishments awarded a Bib Gourmand have been a real hit with our readers, proving that providing good value for money doesn’t have to mean compromising standards.”

Liz Hands takes a look at The Biscuit Factory’s new spring exhibition, and gets a sneak preview of what’s on show this summer

“It’s so difficult to sum up the exhibition because there are so many stunning pieces,” says Rachel.

O

ne sure fire way to tell if spring has truly sprung – along with spotting daffodils and gambolling lambs of course – is when the annual spring exhibition at The Biscuit Factory is hung. Always an exciting part of the North East’s art calendar, the spring show features the work of some of the busiest and most popular artists from the region, and further afield. Packed with nooks and crannies, The Biscuit Factory is devoting its biggest space, The Cube, to renowned printmaker Trevor Price. “He’s very well known as a printmaker,” says gallery manager Rachel Brown. “But we’ve also got some original paintings that you perhaps wouldn’t expect to see from him. They’re very surreal, quite Picasso or Matisse-esque.” Providing the supporting acts to Price’s headline

performance is a cast of 60, including self-taught sculptor Edward Waites. In his early 20s, Waites’ work has already been snapped up by royal families around the world and is on sale at luxury department store Fortnum and Mason. “It’s so difficult to sum up the exhibition because there are so many stunning pieces,” says Rachel. “We’ve got work by Richard Twose, a painter and teacher based in Bath who produces haunting scenes in pastel with splashes of bright colours. “After a couple of years’ absence, Noel Benstead is back. He’s been inspired by trips to Morocco, so there are punchy blues and warm tones you’d associate with the souks. “Anja Percival is based locally and produces incredibly atmospheric etchings and aquatints, glowing interiors. The way she uses light is phenomenal.” It’s an eclectic collection which has been two years in

the planning. And, when spring gives way to summer, it will be all change again as curators at the gallery work to keep things fresh. The focus will turn partly to family-orientated work and activities for the school summer holidays. There will be pieces from renowned children’s writer and illustrator Catherine Rayner, whose books include bedtime favourites Solomon Crocodile and Norris, The Bear who Shared. “And, our headliner for summer will be Alexey Terenin whose work is just sublime,” adds Rachel. In May, the gallery is brought to life with music and visuals by live bands and artists as part of The Late Shows, when more than 50 cultural venues in Newcastle and Gateshead stay open late to offer a huge variety of events. The fact that any of these works are on show in The Biscuit Factory, which dates back to 1860 and was indeed once a biscuit factory, is down to the vision >>

>> of Ramy Zack and his wife Marilyn. Determined to plug the shortage of places for artists to work and exhibit, Zack transformed the space he had owned since 1984 into Britain’s biggest commercial art gallery, investing close to £1m. Now The Biscuit Factory is the jewel in the creative crown that is Newcastle’s Ouseburn area. Open for more than a decade, the gallery continues to expand and invest, creating even more artists’ studios at nearby Biscuit Tin, working in partnership with the local church to provide an alternative space called the Holy Biscuit, launching charity The Biscuit Factory Foundation, and starting construction on yet another venue for events and conferences. ““There’s more going on at the Ouseburn than there’s ever been,” says Rachel. “In times of public cuts and austerity measures, people become even more creative. There have been pop up exhibitions and

18 | collection

shops. When The Biscuit Factory opened, there weren’t many avenues for people to showcase their work and there are still not enough, but there’s been a real shift from people relying on someone else to provide a platform to being empowered to provide one for themselves.” And, despite the continuing credit crunch, Rachel says enthusiasts are continuing to invest in art. “Some people view art as something other people have. But everyone has art in their home, whether it’s from Ikea or it’s a family snapshot on the wall. The thing is, there’s no need to go to Ikea and spend a couple of hundred pounds to have something 20,000 other people have in the country. You can come and spend the same price, support a local artist, and get a beautiful one off piece.” The Biscuit Factory has art on sale at just about every price point. “If you’ve got £50, there’s a huge range of

jewellery by emerging designers,” says Rachel. “So, you get real quality pieces you won’t find elsewhere on the market. For £100, you’d be able to get an original Trevor Price print. “Then, we’ve got the other end of the spectrum. We had a giant bronze conker by Mark Hall that was literally the size of an armchair that was priced at £22,000. “Fundamentally though,” she adds, “we are an affordable art gallery, so that’s anything up to around £4,000. People are more aware of what they’re spending these days, I think, but they’re prepared to spend if they are getting something that is authentic and credible. “I’m not here to tell people what to buy. The most important factor, whatever the price point, is that, to want to hang or place a piece in your home, you need to fall in love with it.”

ART Collection

There’s so much creativity packed into the Ouseburn, it’s a wonder it doesn’t burst. Once an area of light industry, this area of Newcastle has become a magnet for artists and creative types. Along with The Biscuit Factory, there are a host of other venues and studios where artists, sculptors and designers hone, show off, and sell the fruits of their labour. Mushroom Works, on St Lawrence Road, houses

everyone from furniture makers to jewellers and print makers to painters. Regular open studios and exhibitions give the chance to see crafts people at work. Nearby Northern Print is the centre for contemporary printmaking in the North East, with a gallery for viewing and buying work. 36 Lime Street is the biggest artists’ studio co-operative in the region and represents an eclectic mix of artists, designers, performers and musicians.

Opened in 2011, the Toffee Factory is home to a raft of design and media companies. For homewares, Raskl, on Ford Street, sells quirky pieces made by designer-engineers while Refunk Your Junk transforms old furniture into unique and covetable items. And, one of the best things about the Ouseburn is, when you’ve had your fill of all that shopping and culture, you can stop for a pint or a bite to eat at Ouseburn institutions The Ship Inn or The Cluny.

DAFT AS A BRUSH

Recovery JOURNEY TO

Daft as a Brush is a new charity offering a vital transportation and care service to cancer patients who cannot travel unaided to our region’s hospitals but Neil Gordon wants to know why the charity’s founder, noted North East businessman Brian Burnie, chose such a curious name…

“I

wanted something cheerful and memorable, and when I was a child in Heaton there was a man who was always smiling. My mum said he was ‘as daft as a brush’, meaning he was happy and slightly eccentric,” Brian explains when I meet him at his Newcastle office. However, behind this charming story is a serious point. “The right frame of mind can play a key part in treatment,” he adds. “The journey to or from hospital can be very traumatic but if we can make those trips as easy and stress-free as possible, hopefully patients will be more responsive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.” Daft as a Brush began in 2010 when Brian spent a considerable amount of his own money converting seven Nissan people carriers into ambulances. “People call me a millionaire but I’m not really,” he says. “My kids had grown up, I’d just sold my businesses and family home, and I wanted to put the proceeds to good use. I’ve met some truly amazing people, such as

20 | collection

Daisy Clark who started Charlie Bear and raised over £1million for Newcastle General’s Cancer Ward and William Leech who gave away around £70million. I was certainly inspired by these great people but it was a lady called Joan Pringle who suggested the North East needed a specialist cancer care transport service.” Brian has contributed to many good causes but he was not born into wealth. With no qualifications, he started out as an errand boy for Laws Stores. Later, he joined construction company Laing as a student/apprentice and worked his way up to management. In 1978 he and his business partner started their own engineering and surveying firm and in the late 1980s Brian set up PES Associates Charitable Trust. PES has supported events like the world’s biggest children’s party, held on the Town Moor in 1989, and the Children’s Heart Unit at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. “We funded Leslie Hamilton’s surgeon’s post and through that I met the hospital trust’s chairman Sir Leonard Fenwick,” he says. “I mentioned Joan’s idea of a cancer care and transport service and that I wanted to apply the successful practices I’d learned in business. To cut a long story short, I wanted to put the patient at the centre of any transport operation.” The trustees welcomed Brian’s plan and since the first trials in 2011, the ambulances have taken thousands of patients to hospitals all over the region. Each vehicle can carry two patients, who have been referred to the charity by their hospital, as well as a volunteer driver and ‘companion’. The fully trained companions act as a friend and helper during the journey and they all have a ‘cancer connection’, either through surviving the disease or nursing friends and family through treatment. “Our volunteers amaze me,” says Brian. “I say they walk

on water but that’s an understatement. One lady patient said she didn’t want her treatment to end as she would miss the ‘extended family’, whilst a gentleman said that without their support he would not have continued with treatment.” These moving stories are repeated many times and thanks to the hard work of Brian’s volunteers and fundraisers, the future looks bright. In May the ambulances, now numbering 13, will move to a new home by the City of Newcastle Golf Club and Brian is working hard to raise more money and recruit more volunteers. “Our target is to transport 50,000 patients a year and naturally we welcome any help,” he says. It hardly needs to be said that Brian has created an extremely worthwhile cause that deserves our support and if you are still confused by the name let me leave you with this thought: brushes aren’t so daft, they pick things up along the way! successfulsuccession planning

How do you plan for the unexpected departure of a partner, shareholder or director of a business?

To find out, Neil Gordon spoke to Jonathan Waters and Alison Hall, commercial and private capital specialists with leading Newcastle solicitors Hay & Kilner.

W

hen you start a business partnership, company or other commercial enterprise the last thing on your mind is the death of one of the partners, directors or shareholders. Yet, sadly, such tragedies can have a serious impact on any business’ ability to provide an income for those left behind unless the correct legal mechanisms have been put in place. “We call it Succession Planning and it is very important for every business,” says Alison Hall, private capital partner with Newcastle solicitors Hay & Kilner. “Whether it’s a small operation with just two or three partners or a large limited company with dozens of shareholders, appropriate Succession Planning can address the serious problems that may arise if a key person leaves the business.” “And it needn’t be through death,” adds Jonathan Waters, one of Hay & Kilner’s commercial partners and Alison’s colleague. “Divorce, long term illness and other unfortunate circumstances can force one owner of a business to withdraw. In which case, their share of the business’ assets, such as buildings, vehicles and stock, may need to be disposed of appropriately.” So what should Succession Planning cover and when should you start Planning? Jonathan advises “Succession planning needs to be considered as soon as possible, ideally at the start-up stage. However, it is never too late to make sure business affairs are in order. Every business will have a “Business Plan but it also needs a Succession Plan” “You should start by asking two important questions,”

says Alison. “Are any of the business’ assets owned personally? For example does one partner, or director, own a building and lease it back to the business for it to use as offices or similar.” Jonathan continues: “Ask what agreements already exist for the division of jointly owned assets on the dissolution of the business. Again this could be tangible assets such as buildings, vehicles and equipment or intellectual property such as patents, copyrights and good will.” “Once you have identified who owns what, and agreed a suitable value for each of the assets owned or used by the business, each party should include their wishes for the transfer of this portion of their estate in their wills,” says Alison. “A will is the essential bedrock for any good succession plan.” “Absolutely,” agrees Jonathan. “Business owners also need to consider solutions that will help their business cope with any loss. For example: shareholder life cover or ‘loss of key man’ insurance. The payouts from these policies can be used to buy back the deceased person’s shares. ‘Cross-option agreements’ are also needed to provide a mechanism for the sale of the shares following a death.” “A succession plan also needs to consider tax implications,” says Alison. “There are reliefs from inheritance tax on certain business assets but again you need professional planning to take full advantage. As with the business plan, you should also review your succession plan regularly.” “One of the most common changes is divorce. Another

“Succession Planning can address the serious problems that may arise if a key person leaves the business.” is when a relative, such as a son or daughter, is brought into the business. The plan should therefore take into account how assets are to be distributed between children who have joined the business and those who have not.” “In short, we are trying to create a framework of legal agreements that allows the business to continue to trade following a death and also protect the family of the deceased” says Alison. Hopefully the value of Succession Planning is clear but what if you have neglected this crucial area? “Ideally you should address this at the beginning of any business relationship but it’s not essential provided you act now,” says Alison. “If you haven’t considered Succession Planning, or if you need to update your existing arrangements, come and talk to us as Jonathan and I can offer all the help and advice you need.” To discuss Succession Planning for your business, large or small, contact Jonathan Waters or Alison Hall at Hay & Kilner on 0191 232 8345 or email jonathan.waters@hay-kilner.co.uk or alison.hall@hay-kilner.co.uk. Neil Gordon examines the joys of taking a ‘staycation’ in Northumberland…

T

aking a holiday or short break in the UK avoids all the stress of travelling abroad but for those of us living in the North East, the biggest advantage of holidaying at home is that the best of Britain is on our doorstep. Admittedly Northumberland’s scenic coast may not be as sunny as Spain’s Costa del Sol but we have miles of empty, golden beach to explore with no need to get up at dawn to reserve your tiny patch of sand. Similarly, the breathtaking Cheviot Hills have significantly fewer crowds, and far less rainfall, than the Lake District’s Scafell Pike or Helvellyn. All over Northumberland you can ride, walk, fish, cycle, surf, sail and play golf in spectacular surroundings and for a fraction of the cost in other regions. Our towns boast fascinating museums, and superb shops so why bother with Windsor when you can visit Alnwick’s magnificent castle and gardens? And why travel hundreds of miles to a congested

Cornish village when Wooler, Rothbury and Bamburgh are just as picturesque? Of course many residents of Tyneside already know this and some are lucky enough to have bought their own holiday homes. But you don’t have to buy a house in Seahouses or Kielder to explore Northumberland when agencies such as Northumbria Coast & Country Cottages have around 400 superb holiday properties to let. Founded in 1981, NCCC was the first agency to specialise in Northumbrian holiday lets. Thirty years

THINKING OF BUYING HOLIDAY PROPERTY TO LET? Buying a holiday cottage can make sound financial sense. Apart from lowering costs of your own family holidays, the money generated can fund things like university fees and retirement. To help make the most of holiday lets, NCCC offer a bespoke management service that handles bookings, national marketing, Health & Safety compliance, weekly cleaning and other issues. They can also offer free advice on buying property for the holiday rental market and to whet your appetite here are their top tips on what to look for: • LOCATION: The most popular properties have sea views and are within walking distance of the beach or a cosy pub.

Many NCCC cottages welcome pets and most are equipped with Wi-Fi, plasma TVs and other comforts. on, they still have many of their original cottages on their books and their properties are often rented by three generations of the same family, who return year after year! Based in the picturesque seaside village of Alnmouth, NCCC’s team, who all live locally, pride themselves on a detailed knowledge of every property on their books. They offer a range 2-6 bedroom cottages in locations from Hadrian’s Wall to the Scottish Borders, including Lindisfarne (Holy Island), the Northumberland National Park and the Heritage Coast. Besides an exceptional choice of locations, NCCC have properties available all year round and to suit all budgets. Prices for an early season spring break start at an unbelievably low £6 per person per night for a beautiful cottage near Bamburgh. Even in peak season, a six bedroom house in the heart of Alnmouth costs less than £20 per person per night (based on 10 people sharing).

Many NCCC cottages welcome pets and most are equipped with Wi-Fi, plasma TVs and other comforts. Alternatively, to really get away from the 21st Century, choose one of their more remote properties boasting wind generated power and for the ultimate carefree, car-free holiday why not choose Alnmouth itself? Travel by train, bring your bike and thanks to Alnmouth’s mainline station you can easily cycle to any of the 60 holiday properties in the village. Equally, with such a varied choice of holiday homes in wonderful locations, Northumberland is the perfect place for families and friends to meet. Why not rent two or three neighbouring properties for a truly memorable birthday, wedding anniversary or other celebration? Besides NCCC there are number of other companies offering holiday lets in the region (see over) but whichever one you choose you can forget about language difficulties and lost luggage. Even if you do forget something, with a Northumberland staycation you can always pop home to get it!

• SUITABILITY: Some properties may need to be upgraded to comply with current Health & Safety laws but NCCC can advise on any modifications that may be necessary. • BEDROOMS: There is no firm rule however most properties sleep 2-6 people in 1-3 bedrooms. • BATHROOMS: With people’s expectations higher than ever, offering the same number of bathrooms as bedrooms is highly recommended. • CONDITION: Properties must be well maintained and equipped with quality furnishings, fixtures and fittings. • GADGETS: Most holidaymakers also expect internet and satellite TV but the market for gadget-free properties is growing! • PETS: Welcoming pets will broaden your appeal especially if there’s a beach or open countryside nearby. • SEASONS: Even in winter the market is active with half terms, Christmas and New Year now as popular as Easter and high summer.

As part of his look at Northumbrian staycations,

Neil Gordon visits North Star House, one of the best holiday properties on the coast and available to rent from Gosforth based agency Coastal Retreats…

B

amburgh is a truly legendary holiday destination. In the stories of King Arthur, Bamburgh’s rocky crag was the site of Sir Lancelot’s castle Joyous Garde. In history it was the capital of the early kings of Northumbria and the village is still dominated by a mighty fortress built by the Normans. Beyond this magnificent example of medieval military architecture, which is open to the public, there are miles of sandy beach and just across the bay is the tidal island of Lindisfarne. This ‘Holy Island’ was the cradle of Christianity in the North and you can still see the ruined abbey where monks laboured over the beautifully illuminated manuscript the Lindisfarne Gospels. You can also visit Lindisfarne’s Tudor castle, which was remodelled by celebrated architect Edward Lutyens and famed gardener Gertrude Jekyll to create a holiday home for the first editor of Country Life.

With such a wealth of attractions, it is hardly surprising that Bamburgh and Lindisfarne became popular holiday destinations for magazine editors (and we lesser mortals!). Even more importantly, the spirit of Lutyens and Jekyll lives on in an extraordinary holiday property called North Star House. Located just a few minutes’ walk from Bamburgh village and the beach, this fabulous holiday home has been created from a traditional Northumbrian farmstead but it boasts every modern luxury. The property, the renovation of which was finished in 2013, has been designed for two or three families to share and can therefore sleep up to twelve people in five sumptuous bedrooms including the ‘Bunk Room’ which has two sets of ship-style bunks children will love. For parents, the exquisite master bedroom features a king size bed, en suite bathroom, a balcony overlooking the garden and superb views of Bamburgh Castle. There are also two more double bedrooms and a twin room. Besides these highly versatile sleeping arrangements there are four shower/bathrooms, living room with wood-burning stove, sitting room with home media facilities and a games room - so there is always something to keep children occupied whatever the weather. Best of all, North Star House has an enormous dining kitchen that’s perfect for long, lazy brunches and leisurely family suppers. Throughout the property, large picture windows make the most of the breathtaking views and outside there’s a sun terrace and plenty of parking. The large, enclosed garden has lots of lawn for small children to run around in perfect safety and whilst we are on the

subject of younger kids, cots, high chairs, stair gates and baby monitors can be provided on request. The interiors have been finished to an extremely high standard and feature the very best in contemporary styling, which is typical of the properties chosen by Fiona and Alison McKeith for their Coastal Retreats agency. Fiona and Alison, who are sisters, trained in interior design and marketing and they also have their own young families. This background helps them advise their owners on creating the perfect holiday home for people wanting a superior, family-friendly retreat on the spectacular Northumbrian coast. Besides North Star House, Coastal Retreats offer similar superb properties all along the coast whilst their corresponding company, Country Retreats, has a range of equally distinctive holiday homes in locations all over Northumberland, Hadrian’s Wall Country, North Yorkshire and County Durham. Fiona and Alison take great pride in offering properties that are a little bit different from traditional holiday homes and whilst some rates may be higher than others, unforgettable holidays in exceptional properties like North Star House are definitely worth it.

MORE INFORMATION Coastal Retreats and Country Retreats are based at 9 Causey St, Gosforth and visitors are welcome between 9am and 3.30pm weekdays. Michelle Taylor about love, lingerie

and 50 Shades of Grey

W

hen she was a little girl, Michelle Taylor desperately wanted the starring role of Tallulah in the school play. But, it wasn’t to be. Instead, she was given the part of one of Bugsy Malone’s down and outs. Clearly, she never quite came to terms with the rejection, as, now that she is a successful entrepreneur, the 37-year-old has named her lingerie label Tallulah Love.

FASHION Collection

“I really wanted to be Tallulah but I didn’t get chosen,” says Michelle. “And I used to call all of my friends Tallulahs if they were being flirty. The Love comes from the law of attraction. It sounds corny but there’s a book called The Secret which really stuck with me. It talks about giving out positivity and how that attracts positivity and I truly believe that what you give out comes back.” It’s a philosophy that certainly seems to have worked for Michelle as she threw her heart and soul into launching Tallulah Love in 2010, admitting to “not being the best at balancing my work life and home life,” working from 5.30am until midnight. But, the sacrifices have paid off as Tallulah Love’s success has been nothing short of stratospheric. Her designs are now stocked across the world in places as far afield as Japan and Dubai. And her brand of vintage-meets-contemporary style has won celebrity fans including Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland and fellow North Easterners DJ Lauren Laverne and presenter Jayne Middlemiss. Manufactured in the UK and Portugal, her lingerie had a starring role in reality show TOWIE when it was stocked at Jessica Wright’s boutique With Love Jessica and her designs have appeared in style bible Vogue. “It just went wild,” says Michelle. “I think maybe it’s because I went to Paris to launch. But we were looking at British, French and Italian core markets. It might sound silly but I really wasn’t ready for people on the other side of the world to get what I was doing.” But get it they did and Michelle believes her success is down in no small part to appealing to women rather than trying to design to impress their husbands and boyfriends. “When I got the images back from our first photo shoot, people were telling me they weren’t sexy

enough,” she says. “But I didn’t want them to be sexy. I wanted them to be classy. They’re not designed to titillate men. I design for women and I think that shines through.” Inspired by British traditional crafts with a touch of old-style Parisian flair, Michelle had a visualisation of her lingerie that would be both timeless and up-tothe-minute. Her original mood board for Tallulah Love features vintage chocolate box packaging and the famous Vargas pin-up girls. “It’s about quality, luxury and detail,” she says. “I source silks from Britain and my lace tends to come from France.” And while Michelle’s designs are something out of the ordinary, so too, she says is the type of woman who wears Tallulah. “I would say she’s really confident with a quirky personality looking for something different,” she says. “It’s a luxury brand, so we’re looking at someone with quite a disposable income. They want to be fashionable but they don’t want to look like everybody else.” The type of woman then that sounds just like Michelle,

who has beaten the odds to develop a flourishing business through the recession. With knickers costing around £40 from her ranges and bras at £80, her opulent label has built up a loyal following. It’s a far cry from Northumbria University graduate Michelle’s first job with Courtaulds lingerie, making tummy control pants for Marks and Spencer. “But I do have some designs now that are cut high on the waist to keep everything in,” she says, “ so something must have stuck with me.” From there, Michelle went on to design for the likes of Topshop, Miss Selfridge and Ann Summers before landing a job with Playboy Intimates where she swiftly rose to the dizzy heights of design director. “They’d never done lingerie before and it could have been very tarty, very tacky,” she says. “But, I was lucky enough to get in at the start. I looked at the heritage of the brand and the old-fashioned bunny girls and we went down that route.” But, much as she loved her job, Michelle always wanted to start her own label and, finally, she took the plunge, applying for a design competition and >>

<< putting together an extensive business plan to source funding loans. A bundle of bubbly energy with a distinctive Teesside lilt, Michelle immediately puts you at ease when you meet her, playing mum to pour the tea, and it’s easy to see how she convinced potential funders that, with her at the helm, Tallulah Love would go from strength to strength. Romantic, dreamy and detailed, her collections are

jewel-like creations with Chantilly lace, ribbon trims, pin-tuck detailing and sumptuous silks. There’s everything from the pastel femininity of the Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly range to the more overtly sexy Dinner at the Ritz. You can just imagine gangsters’ molls in the Bugsy Malone Prohibition Era wearing Michelle’s designs. Boutiques across the North East have rushed to stock Tallulah Love, including Cherry B in Corbridge,

Through the Looking Glass in Newcastle’s Hood Street, Jules B in Jesmond and the Little Shop of Erotic Delights in Mill Crescent, Newcastle. Michelle has also won a clutch of design, export and entrepreneurial awards. But now that Tallulah Love is well established, she isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Already well on her way to global domination, with her designs stocked in 14 countries across the world, she is employing Tallulah ambassadors to take her designs into the likes of Belgium, Spain, France, the USA and Russia. Michelle is also in the middle of moving premises, from Gateshead to a hub close to Stockton’s Arc. She often holds talks at schools and colleges to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and she is busy working on her sexiest collection to date. Called Tallulah Darkside, Michelle says: “It’s a bit edgier, more mysterious. The market is changing since 50 Shades of Grey. It’s still pretty but with a darker side.” But Michelle has learned her lesson after becoming ill last year with what her doctor believes was stressrelated labyrinthitis and she makes time to spend with her fiancé at the weekend. “Although,” she adds. “We went to York for a romantic break recently and I just can’t switch off. I was taking photos for inspiration and talking to people about collaborations. But Michelle’s other half, commodities manager Ian Ward, 39, keeps her grounded. “He’s so chilled and relaxed. He’s my backbone. We got engaged on Christmas Day. He said he just wanted me to know that he wants to be with me, so that side of my life is sorted, and he’ll be there while I go off and do what I need to do for Tallulah.” It sounds like Michelle’s home life is as romantic as her lingerie.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED YOUR

RIGHTS TO LIGHT? Right to Light is a subject which many Surveyors, Architects and Developers have only

a very basic knowledge and it is something that is often overlooked. Similarly, the general public also have little or no knowledge of these legal rights, and hence often oversights by professionals go un-noticed, to the detriment of a neighbour who loses a lot of natural light to their property. If you are a residential or business building owner, you will normally have a legal right to light if you have had uninterrupted light through windows for over 20 years. If there is a new development which would affect any such windows and leave rooms inadequately lit you could be entitled to compensation or potentially an injunction to stop the offending building works. Unfortunately, we come across examples of this day in

day out, and generally it is not through intentional actions of a developer, it is mainly due to a lack of knowledge. It is far better far all concerned if such matters are addressed early on. Early in March 2013, we had a call from a couple whose kitchen had been cast into darkness as a result of a substantial house extension constructed by their neighbour. The neighbour who had almost finished construction of their large extension, had employed professionals to prepare a design, obtain planning permission etc, and in their mind had done everything correctly. Unfortunately, their design was so overbearing, it caused a very significant legal injury to the right to light enjoyed by their neighbours. This injury was so

significant that potentially, the remedy might be an injunction to have the new building demolished. As you can imagine, this is an awful situation for two neighbours to find themselves in, and one that is likely to cost both parties significant amounts of stress and money to overcome. At Smith Marston LLP, we have the expert knowledge and specialist computer software to undertake all types of light assessments and to advise upon all such matters. Please call Philip Smith or Adrian Marston to discuss any light related concerns. Tel 01434 607802 or find out more on our website www.righttolightsurveyors.co.uk

At 34 Rachel Turnbull has her dream job, lifting drivers' spirits. She tells Brian Nicholls how it's come about.

ON'T be taken in by any music geek who suggests Tyneside no longer has a tunnel of love. Mark Knopfler's legendary Tunnel of Love may have vanished when the old Spanish City funfair at Whitley Bay was flattened. But a mere few miles away there are actually two major tunnels awash with affection now. They make up the new Tyne vehicle crossing that takes the A19 underwater between Howdon and Jarrow. Rachel Turnbull, chief executive of TT2 Ltd which runs the crossing, says: "We've been inundated with letters, emails and phone calls from customers of all walks, saying thank you for the difference the second tunnel makes to their lives. "Customers driving through the toll plazas, too,

shout over that they love the new tunnels. One gentleman emailed that he believed the lack of congestion, thanks to the second tunnel, would now save him almost seven days a year he'd once have been spent in traffic. He pledged to donate this extra time to a charity he worked for." When the tunnel team ran a Valentine competition recently to learn how the tunnels figure in peoples’ lives they had a "wonderful" response and some heart-warming stories. The winning couple stood out. Rachel explains: "Without the tunnels, they felt, the journey between his home at North Shields and her home at Darlington would have been a significant barrier to romance. Instead, the tunnels proved to be their 'shuttle run for love' and they're getting married this summer." The public's warmth is understandable. Before a second tunnel was built - and before the first one, completed in 1967 and out of date, was modernised - 38,000 vehicles daily went through

the one-alone burrow designed for only 24,000. Delays of 50 minutes were often commonplace. Since last November, when both tunnels started providing a fully functioning dual carriageway link for the first time, up to 50,000 have been going through some days. The only delay now may arise if the driver in front of you has to scratch around his pockets or her purse for toll change. Rachel too is enamoured. Her first day there as chief executive gave her a great feeling, she admits. "It’s fantastic to be at the helm of a company making a real difference to people's lives," she says. It has been a great career advance. "Not only do you not get a lot of female chief executives in the construction industry in terms of projects, but to find myself a young female chief executive also was an out of this world opportunity." At 34 she's one of the youngest chief executives of a strategic undertaking in the UK, in fact. A BA honours graduate of Northumbria University (business and finance) and first-time pass chartered accountant, she's delighted that although born in

"We visited Gary's family regularly on Tyneside, and I kind of fell in love with the place, and the idea of bringing up a family in the North East, by the coast." Nottingham and raised in Doncaster, she can enjoy such stimulating responsibility in the North East. She says this having worked extensively also in Brighouse, Doncaster, Leeds, Huddersfield, Chesterfield, Nottingham, and London. She did all this working on the Royal Mail's financial development programme, then as financial manager for ABB Control Valves, financial controller for Height UK the print equipment manufacturer, and as financial manager for Mowlem the builder now part of Carillion. She and husband Gary, from Whitley Bay, had their first daughter Lily Grace while they lived in Leeds. Rachel recalls: "We visited Gary's family regularly on Tyneside, and I kind of fell in love with the place,

and the idea of bringing up a family in the North East, by the coast." In April 2007 Rachel got her feet under a Tyneside desk, maternity covering as financial services manager for Home Group, the Newcastle based national provider of homes and supported housing services. Then from December 2007 she got into TT2 and climbed the executive ladder, first as financial controller than as chief financial officer, company secretary and managing director designate, mentored by the previous principal Trevor Jackson, who's now working on a tunnel in Miami port. Last July Rachel became chief executive of the business, leading 56 staff. By then the Turnbulls' second daughter Ava Mae, now three, had come along, and the couple had made a life change; Gary would work from home and also look after the children, while Rachel was smoothing the way daily for commuters, truckers, leisure seekers and all the other tunnel users. Gary set up Boobosh, a marketing consultancy in screenprinting and design of children's clothing. Boobosh was their nickname for Lily Grace before she was born. Now Rachel, a partner also in Boobosh, finds time to handle the administration there too - "contracts, VAT, accounts, all the bits that most people don't like to do," she laughs. The family home, furnished in contemporary style, stands off Front Street in Tynemouth. "It's a very functional town house in terms of rooms and layout, and we have the integrated garage for Gary's business. Tynemouth is a fantastic place to live in. We're spoiled really," she says. Not least because she can also drive to the awardwinning tunnels in as few as 10 minutes. Easy commuting can often be a Tyne and Wear perk, as even many folk driving under the river to work can now affirm.

alk past the buffalo and kudu heads that greet you as you enter Bywell Hall and you come to an imposing portrait of Wentworth Peter Ismay Beaumont, 4th Viscount Allendale, or Wenty as he is known to his friends. Opposite that is an image of Lord Allendale’s late father Wentworth Hubert Charles Beaumont, portrayed as a young boy by none other than Philip de László, the renowned society artist who also painted the Queen, when she was Princess Elizabeth, and the Queen Mother. They’re just some of the little-seen treasures that will be on show when Bywell Hall’s state rooms open to the public for the first time this spring. It’s going to be quite a year for Lord Allendale and

home before it opens to the public this spring Allendale Estates as he and his team prepare to throw open the James Paine-built Palladian hall and its grounds. Not only are the state rooms sure to attract art lovers, and those who are just curious to see what lies inside the Grade II-listed home, but Allendale Estates, of which Bywell Hall is part, will be hosting the Northumberland County Show for the first time ever in May. Lord and Lady Allendale are also preparing for a celebration of a much more personal nature when their eldest daughter, the Hon Lucy Harriet Beaumont marries her fiancé the Hon Michael Julian Marsham, the youngest son of the 8th Earl of Romney, in April, at Bywell Hall. It’s the only time the Beaumonts are aware of a wedding taking place at the 18th century hall and just goes to show that this is no stuffy country house, but very much a family home. While Lord and Lady Allendale live “150 yards up the road,” Bywell Hall is still used for entertaining and their eldest son and heir, Wenty Jnr, or the Hon Wentworth Ambrose Ismay Beaumont, bases himself between the hall and Bywell Castle when he is in Northumberland. Wenty Jnr not only helps to run Allendale Estates, but works as an art dealer in London. And it is because Wenty Jnr is clearly the art expert of the family that he will be giving a press tour and the

first public tour of Bywell Hall, showing visitors around the ground floor, including the dining room, drawing room and library, a role he says he is very excited by. While his father says the tours could be “a bit of an acquired taste,” adding: “It’s obviously not fairground stuff, but there’s a lot to see – the family portraits, landscapes, tapestries and furniture,” Wenty Jnr adds: “Rumblings are we are going to get a lot of interest. People are enthused by it and we’ve had a lot of volunteers coming forward to help.” The Beaumonts take their responsibilities as estate owners seriously while still exuding an air of warmth. And this is never more evident than in the portrait of his father which Wenty Jnr persuaded his friend Hugo Wilson, one of Britain’s brightest young artistic talents, to take on. With a nod to traditional portraiture, the image also shows a sense of humour as Lord Allendale poses in elaborate carpet slippers. It’s also clear in Wenty Jnr’s attitude to the art tour. “I’m looking forward to showing people around,” he says.

While his father says the tours could be “a bit of an acquired taste,” adding: “It’s obviously not fairground stuff, but there’s a lot to see

“There’s the Regency furniture, the family portraits by De László and Gainsborough. And the paintings by the old masters, Turner, Bonington and George Frederic Watts should enthuse people. There are a huge amount of objects that have been accumulated over the years.” Among Wenty Jnr’s personal favourites are “the Bonington landscape which is fantastic. The tapestries are beautiful and in extremely good condition and the Lady Margaret Beaumont is an iconic image. “We’ve got a lot of work to do between now and the end of March, but our view is we want to put on a good show and make people feel welcome, that they come away thinking ‘that was worth it,’ rather than ‘that was a waste of £6’.” While Wenty Jnr acknowledges that “there can be trepidation about opening up houses like this,” he adds: “We’re very excited. There have always been things going on there. It was used during both world wars, for political rallies, and we had a big community party for the Queen’s Jubilee.” It’s that kind of forward-thinking that has led to what really is the ultimate farm diversification scheme on the 20,000 acres owned by Allendale Estates. Where once the land would solely have been used for farming, with pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle roaming Bywell Home Farm, today the estates are home to a stupendous array of business pursuits. “It’s changed a lot over the past 20 years or so,” says Lord Allendale. “We’ve now got commercial units where we once had farms. Farming has moved on. You need bigger buildings with wider doors and we had a whole lot of old stone buildings that aren’t fit for farming any more. “We didn’t want to just pull them down so we created office hubs. We’re virtually full now. It brings heaps of people into the area and they spend in the local shops and pubs. “Fishing has also been a great success. We’ve had some really good seasons in a row. And there are the horse trials, which are really my wife’s thing, with the dates

Castle Canter changed to mid-June to accommodate the county show. Then there’s the shooting, which I’ve been involved in for a good time, and which I enjoy doing, which is always a help.” But while Allendale Estates has hosted events for up to 6,000 in the past, the Northumberland County Show, which regularly attracts more than 25,000 visitors, will be the largest undertaking by far. “We heard a rumour the show wanted to move so it could expand,” says Lord Allendale. “I think that had been pretty public knowledge for some years and it occurred to us we had the perfect site for it. It raises the profile of the Estate and it’s good to help a good show out – and it is a damn good show. “When we see it all set up and all the visitors here, it will be an amazing feeling.” It’s a direction Lord Allendale hopes the Estate will further head in. “We’ll do more of these limited types of events, just the good ones,” he said. “We’re not actively looking to find them but if a good one comes our way, we’d look to do it.” The Northumberland County Show is on Bank Holiday Monday 27th May 2013

Northumberland County Show isn’t the only event on the move this summer. Previously called the Hexham Horse Trials, the Belsay Horse Trials, renamed because of their new home, will be taking place in parkland surrounding 14th century Belsay Castle. Retaining the same weekend in the British Eventing calendar, the equestrian event, which features dressage, show-jumping and cross country, will be held on June 1 and 2. The course has been created by renowned designer Ronald Alexander and organisers are confident the trials will attract large numbers of competitors and spectators. Organiser Edward Pybus said: “The beautiful parkland surrounding the 14th century castle at Belsay is absolutely perfect for a horse trials event and we are very grateful to the trustees of the Belsay Charitable Trust, which maintains the parkland, for allowing us to use this historic venue.” His co-organiser Laura de Wesselow, who represents the current generation of the Middleton family that have lived at Belsay for more than 800 years, added: “Belsay has a wonderful equestrian heritage. My family bred and trained racehorses here in the 18th and 19th centuries and even won the St Leger at Doncaster in 1859 with a horse called Gamester, so it is very exciting that we are now bringing eventing to Belsay.” Belsay Horse Trials take place on 1st & 2nd June 2013 at Belsay Castle, Northumberland

Just do it. Indoor climbing is growing in popularity as a sport –

ith talk of an Olympic debut, climbing is set to become the new rock and roll. And, with world-class facilities already in place in the North East, prospects of a rock climbing superstar emerging from the region look encouraging, to say the least. Climbing has quietly and surefootedly built a momentum over recent years – you could say “because it’s there” – and now it rivals swimming, cycling and fishing in the sports participation stakes. It’s an activity that combines strength, agility, problem-solving, nerve and fitness – plus it is readily

accessible for the proverbial “eight to eighties” age group. Rock climbing’s current “golden boy”, 20-year-old Adam Ondra, started his first climbing moves when he was four and with younger participants reaching their peak at an ever-earlier age, the sport now follows the route that gymnastics has traditionally trod. But that doesn’t exclude the rest of us, as Mark Goodings, operations manager at the Newcastle Climbing Centre, explains. “We have just under 8,000 members and last night we had 120 people here, all doing various movements,” he

and the foundation of a fitness strategy, writes Alastair Gilmour

“You can come in here, start climbing and work out a few problems,” says Dominic. “It’s not about how high you can go, it’s about moves and working out a problem, like sudoku with a physical aspect to it.

“It’s about looking after each other, about trust and reward. It’s also a great stepping-stone to climbing outside – you can be visiting environments you’ve never been to before.” says. “The atmosphere was terrific. We’ve got everyone from seven-year-olds to people in their eighties and everything in between.” The Newcastle Climbing Centre is a hugely impressive indoor facility based at the grade II-listed St Marks Church in Byker, Newcastle – a breathtaking combination of lofty, sweeping vaulted arches blending with 100-foot high colour-coded climbing walls complete with overhangs, chimneys, holds, clips, ceilings and buttresses. A new centre in Sunderland is also attracting a lot of interest. At St Marks, climbing walls and ecclesiastical architecture work in utter harmony and the sight of an

Newcastle Climbing Centre ^

enormous stained glass window at one end seems somehow appropriate. While one adventurous soul works his way round a stalactite hanging dizzyingly high above terra firma (the scariest thing is that he looks so confident), a teenager who crosses the room doesn’t simply walk from one end to the other, he traverses it with hand- and foot-holds simply to test his coordination. It’s probably just as quick, too. Exhausting moves are attempted in complete safety, with every participant roped to a teammate, putting complete trust in them and the equipment. “Climbing is not a traditional sport like cycling, it’s a lifestyle activity with everyone reaping the benefits,” says Mark Goodings. “The British Mountaineering Council put the 2011/2012 figures at 8.2 million, which puts climbing bigger than most participation sports. It’s perceived as an extreme sport, but we do all different disciplines and we’re linked to the education curriculum through the National Indoor Climbing Association. “It’s about looking after each other, about trust and reward. It’s also a great stepping-stone to climbing outside – you can be visiting environments you’ve never been to before.”

But surely you must have to have nerves of steel, powerful muscles and extra-long limbs to be any good at climbing? Not according to Dominic Bowser, a trainer at Sound Mind And Body gym in Benton, Newcastle. Dominic works with a wide range of clients, from 90-year-olds seeking a better quality of life to professional athletes training for competition, through film and television personalities and industry executives.“A lot of climbing is like chess,” he says. “Businessmen come here to escape, to totally focus on something else.” He then grasps a large peg and drives it into a hole well above head height and with the other hand he stretches up and does the same – only higher – hoisting his body upwards, repeating the manoeuvre until he’s 30 feet from the (padded) floor. It’s almost ballet-like, a synchronised strategy using natural agility, mental prowess and simple physics to perform the task. “You can come in here, start climbing and work out a few problems,” says Dominic. “It’s not about how high you can go, it’s about moves and working out a problem – like sudoku with a physical aspect to it. It’s as much for your mind as your body but you use your legs as well as your arms, so as an exercise programme it will also build your upper body strength. “People will come in and plan a route, it’s about a challenge and getting the balance right. And here at the gym we take the holistic approach, going into everything like nutrition, work-outs, massage and psychology.” Fittingly for a sport that is attracting new enthusiasts by the week, climbing is not alpha-male dominated – whole families take part – and Mark Goodings estimates there’s a 60-40 male-to-female split. “It’s not all about an adrenaline aspect, it’s teamwork and having fun,” he says. “We’ve got absolute beginners coming regularly to experienced climbers who are training to go off to Everest. We have lectures from the likes of Alan Hinkes, the first Briton to have climbed all 14 of the world’s mountains over 8,000 metres high, and we arrange special screenings of climbing films at the Tyneside Cinema. “All our staff have the right qualifications and it’s not limited to indoors, either. Northumberland has some of the best outdoor climbs in the country, people come from all over to the Cheviots around Belford, for instance. It’s totally up to you, you can be as adventurous as you like.” Climbing is looking up. Just don’t look down.

MINCOFFS

END

OF A RELATIONSHIP… DO I HAVE TO SELL THE HOUSE?

I

t is said that divorce is one of the three most stressful experiences you could ever undergo. The other two are bereavement and moving home – so divorce may be doubly traumatic if it results in you having to leave your home. In England and Wales there are no rules setting out precisely how assets will be divided on divorce. The circumstances of every divorce are different and the law in this area is flexible. The aim is to divide the assets fairly; however fairness does not necessarily mean an equal division. On divorce, there is a wide discretion to redistribute all the assets of the parties and the former matrimonial home will often be a large part of the overall ‘pot’ of assets to be dealt with. The first consideration must always be given to the needs of any dependent children. Although the couple may decide to go their separate ways, they are still jointly responsible for the welfare of their children and this will often play a decisive part in the redistribution of the assets. In practical terms this may mean the financial settlement will include the transfer of the home, or enough money to fund a suitable home, to whoever will be caring for the children on a day-to-day basis. It shouldn’t be assumed a house in joint names will automatically be divided in equal shares, nor should it be assumed that a house in the sole name of one party will be retained by them in its entirety; there are a whole host of factors to be considered.

38 | collection

A myth of divorce is that the innocent party will retain all or most of the assets where the other has committed adultery or behaved in an unacceptable way. This is not correct. Whilst this may be a ground for the divorce itself, the Court will not take into account such conduct in dividing the assets. Another myth is in relation to property occupied by an unmarried couple and a common misconception of a ‘common law’ relationship that gives rise to rights

and entitlements. Cohabitants with a property claim face a minefield of difficulties following a relationship breakdown and who retains the house is determined by a completely different set of factors to those relating to a marriage. Whether you have to sell your house on the breakdown of your relationship is not an uncomplicated question and it is important that you obtain expert advice to make sure you achieve the best financial settlement for you and your family.

REGIONAL LETTINGS

Blossoming A bright and prosperous future has almost certainly been carved

MARKET

in the regional lettings division, with reporting figures suggesting that 2013 may well be another year where records are to be broken.

G

ail McLean, regional lettings manager at Sanderson Young, is extremely encouraged by the prospects for the rental market, and having built on previous success she is seeing vast improvements for this year. “2013 has been the best start to the year we have ever had since launching the regional lettings department eleven years ago. The profile of our tenants and the properties they choose to rent has also changed dramatically, moving from city centre apartments to family homes within the residential suburbs of Newcastle. With that has come a change in the rental figures achieved, with our average sitting at over £1000 pcm.” Even as a seasoned professional with vast experience in the North East marketplace, Gail is staggered by the premium figures being achieved, largely down to the lack of properties available to meet the needs of potential tenants. “We, as a company, are generating average rentals well in excess of the national average, which sits around £750 - £850 pcm, and we are actually in line with the London market, which is exceptional. We have built up an unrivalled reputation with large corporates and blue chip companies and the majority of our tenants are from this end of the market – be it relocations or secondments to the region.”

66 | collection

This investment into the region from many large scale employers has obviously resulted in the strengthening of this end of the market, and family homes are highly sought after. “My clients include Nissan, Procter and Gamble and large pharmaceuticals, which have excellent budgets often up to £2500 pcm. In fact 85% of our prospective tenants are from outside the area.” The luxury end of the market is also growing in strength, says Gail. “At Sanderson Young, we are known for our confidentiality and exceptional service, and we specialise in low key marketing of quality properties. Our bespoke service is there to provide our high end clients with the privacy they require, and we have seen several properties recently to have achieved £2500 pcm up to £4000 pcm.” So, what are Gail’s recommendations on standout properties available at present? “We currently have a stunning, five bedroom property at High Callerton on the market at £5250 pcm, with fabulous kitchen and bathrooms, and luxury extras including a cinema room. Or if you are looking for an eco-home, we have the ideal property in the development of Camborne Park, Gateshead, where at £995 pcm you also enjoy the benefits of solar panels, air source heat pumps and contemporary design.”

The rental market is also seen as a way to “bridge the gap” between purchases and many clients are also turning to renting their property out long term if selling proves more difficult. “There have been four occasions so far this year, where the sales team have passed clients to us who are finding the sales market more challenging. Rental is definitely an option, and can be a sensible decision if you find yourself in that position. I would certainly recommend a rental appraisal as many clients can be pleasantly surprised by the rental yields achievable.” If you feel you would benefit from a market appraisal, or for some honest advice about the rental market, Gail is here to answer any queries. “Our clients feel comfortable dealing with us due to the knowledge and experience we have. My advice is truly in our clients best interests and there is, of course, no obligation. I would be delighted to discuss any opportunity and help our potential future landlords prosper in the buoyant marketplace we are experiencing.” For information about rental properties, and the services Sanderson Young can offer both landlords & tenants, contact Gail McLean, tel 0191 223 3510 or email gail.mclean@sandersonyoung.co.uk

Janet Hopkinson looks at the new developments springing up around the region and the many incentives to buy

2012

was certainly a more positive year for the new homes sector of the housing market, substantiated by the level of national housebuilders producing encouraging levels of transactions which has seen an increase in profits being recorded . There is no doubt that the Government led New Buy initiative has helped to introduce buyers to this sector, where only a 5% deposit is required to purchase a new home. Indeed, as this editorial is written we have been delighted with the new initiative from the Budget, where the Chancellor has announced the “Help to Buy” scheme which is on offer to all, not just first-time buyers. The Government will lend you up to 20% of the value of your property through an equity loan, which can be repaid at any time or on the sale of your home. So you will only need to secure up to 75% mortgage from a bank or building society. This new initiative is available from 1st April 2013 and will run for 3 years and provide £3.5billion of additional investment into the new homes marketplace. The benefits of buying a new property allow

The benefits of buying a new property allow purchasers to budget exactly for their coming foray into home ownership.

purchasers to budget exactly for their coming foray into home ownership. The one real advantage is that the only major expense is actually the purchase of any items of furnishings required, taking into account that nowadays new houses in most instances, come with all kitchen appliances included, well appointed bathrooms, and most importantly running costs kept to a minimum. Energy efficiency has played a major role in new homes construction and this, coupled with a ten year building warranty, gives people a much needed peace of mind, knowing that there will be no major worries with regard to replacement of central heating boilers, re-wiring etc. For purchasers in a strong position to proceed, good incentives are also being offered and for those with a property to sell, help with part exchange or estate agency fees now prove the norm. 2013 sees a number of new developments appearing in the region and a selection of these can be seen on the forthcoming pages. Sanderson Young is delighted to have been appointed as sole selling agents on a prestigious development of 73 units situated in Alnwick on behalf of Cussins. Over the last 6 years we have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with this local family run business, who now have their own headquarters within Alnwick town. Janet Hopkinson, Operations & New Homes Director for Sanderson Young comments: “The Limes development will provide an excellent selection of properties to suit a variety of buyers. From affordable living to 4 and 5 bedroom homes, the development

…we believe there will be some excellent choices to be offered to those wishing to purchase a new build property. “

sits on an elevated position having fantastic views over the town, Alnwick Castle, Hulne Park and the Aln Valley. The traditional exterior styling of the properties, making use of heritage brick and sandstone, is something that is sure to appeal to prospective purchasers. We very much look forward to launching the site on the 20th April 2013 from our Alnwick office. On the south side of the river, in Low Fell, instructions have been received to work with Adamson Developments on their conversion apartment scheme - “Lyndholme” Beacon Lough Road, which will comprise some 14 x 2-bedroom modern apartments. Constructed over 3 floors, with the benefit of lift access, this development has already attracted interest and buyers are eagerly awaiting the launch of this scheme in late spring. I am very excited about the prospect of several more new homes’ schemes unfolding as the year progresses as we have been working hard during 2012 with all our appraisal and marketing recommendations and we believe there will be some excellent choices to be offered to those wishing to purchase a new build property. “

NEW HOMES

Liz Hands explores the unique way of life on offer from renowned North East house builders Cussins at their prestigious new Alnwick development.

T

his spring marks the first release of new homes at exclusive new development The Limes. Esteemed house builders Cussins are constructing 73 high-specification two to five bedroom homes on a truly outstanding site, overlooking Alnwick’s historic town centre and its glorious medieval castle. With breathtaking views yet just a few minutes’ walk to the town’s bustling Market Place, The Limes is already generating a lot of interest from families who want the chance to experience a quality of life that is second-tonone. Those who want to be among the first to choose a home are advised to register their interest before the launch to avoid disappointment. One of the key draws of The Limes is its stunning location in Alnwick, once named as the best place to live in Britain by Country Life magazine, while still being an easy road or rail journey away from Newcastle. Families and professionals who choose to make The Limes their home will be able to enjoy

116 | collection

buying farm-fresh local produce from the regular markets and indulging in a spot of retail therapy on vibrant Bondgate Within, which took the title of Britain’s Best Shopping Street in the 2011 Google Street View Awards. Residents of The Limes will be able to make the short walk from their homes into the centre of Alnwick where there’s a thriving culinary scene, with everything from fine dining to gastro pubs. Schools, held in high esteem by parents and Ofsted alike, are within walking distance and tea times can be spent with a picnic at the beach as the spectacular Northumberland coastline is just a 10-minute drive away. And, as well as the launch of The Limes being one of the key happenings this spring, Alnwick has a packed annual events calendar. Every year, in early August, the town is filled with the sights and sounds of the International Music Festival, featuring eight days of dancing, music and colourful costumes. Later in the month is the Provincial Booksellers Fair where you can choose from hundreds of collectable and rare titles. Alnwick also plays host to food and beer festivals in September and there is a series of outdoor concerts in the grounds of Alnwick Castle, which have attracted a host of A-list stars including Jessie J and Jools Holland. Renowned music festivals take place in nearby Rothbury and 12th century Brinkburn Priory too and, every August Bank Holiday, there is one of the biggest events of the agricultural calendar in Wooler – the Glendale Show with monster trucks, farm animals, horse riding competitions and fairground rides. Add to all that the fact you’re within a stone’s throw of cultural and educational attractions like the Duke and

Duchess of Northumberland’s Alnwick Castle, aka Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, and The Alnwick Garden, which both offer a year’s free entry when you buy your day tickets, and you’ll probably want to spend your summer holidays staycationing at home. Established since 1926, Cussins is well known for the outstanding quality of its builds and The Limes will be no exception. With construction already under way, each home will be finished in heritage brick and sandstone, combining the charm usually associated with older properties with the convenience and energy efficiency of modern building techniques. There are 11 different designs and each home will have its own garden and garage or parking space. Cussins took over the plans from the Duke of Northumberland’s office in 2012 and is now working hard to make sure every house is perfectly suited, not only to Alnwick’s architectural elegance, but to the families who choose to make The Limes their new home.

Prices for homes at The Limes are expected to start at £90,000 for a two-bedroom property, rising to around £300,000 for a five-bedroom detached family home. For more information or to register your interest, contact sole selling agent Sanderson Young’s Alnwick office on 01665 600 170 or visit www.cussins.com.

Liz Hands gets a glimpse inside the world’s most expensive terraced home

I

t’s not very often an interior designer is told that money is no object when they ask what sort of budget a client has in mind. But that’s exactly the brief Jesmond-headquartered Dakota International was given when its designers took on a project for a Russian billionaire. The team was asked to completely revamp what has since been billed as the world’s most expensive terraced house. Situated on the edge of Regent’s Park in central London, no. 1 Cornwall Terrace originally went on the market for £100m and, even in these straightened times, has just sold at a whopping £80m. On a tight timescale, Dakota’s managing director Peter Hodgson and associate Adam Thirkell were seconded to the Grade I-listed mansion for around seven months. And, with 11 reception rooms, seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a private gym, nanny’s

120 | collection

and servants’ quarters, two kitchens, a wine cave and swimming pool, all set across five floors, they certainly had their work cut out. Dakota immediately set about commissioning key pieces with the longest lead times, including the spectacular fibre-optic light fitting which cascades down five storeys through the stairwell. Made by Sharon Marston, the huge piece cost some £100,000 – more than many starter homes.

“We do a lot of high end residential projects so we’re used to having a decent budget but it’s fair to say this was a bit of an unusual one.

Stunning bespoke joinery was created by high-end firms Kaizen and Decorus. Luxury furniture makers Gosling created the curved wooden armchairs which sit as focal points in the dining room and look more like works of art than places to rest. Contemporary Murano glass makers Baroncelli created many of the spectacular chandeliers, and Rubert Bevin, who specialises in antique glass mirrors and bespoke furniture, was also among those to supply luxury products to provide a final feel that manages to be both cool and enticing at the same time.

INTERIORS Collection

“The aesthetic we were presented with was very neutral, light and airy, with lots of creams and whites,” says Adam. “There is a danger that sort of palette can be cold and bland so we set about enhancing it while still reflecting the client’s taste. “We introduced warm lighting and a selection of fabrics so, while a cushion may have to be white, it doesn’t have to be boring. We used a lot of different textures and detailing. We also used lots of very sculptural pieces like the tiles in the bathroom, which were square metre-sized and cost thousands of pounds each.” Peter, Adam and the team at Dakota were responsible for all the decorative finishes, the furniture, fabrics, light fittings, rugs and artwork, right down to the tiniest details. “We obviously knew what sort of money we were dealing with,” says Adam. “We do a lot of high end residential projects so we’re used to having a decent budget but it’s fair to say this was a bit of an unusual one. You don’t usually get people saying ‘don’t worry about the budget’. “But it wasn’t just about going out there and choosing whatever we wanted, applying our taste and expertise.

A large part of the job was time management, stacking up the sequence of work and prioritising those items with long lead ins. “The client wanted a complete turnkey solution so we did everything from commissioning those bespoke pieces to purchasing off the shelf, going into Harrods to buy picture frames. We even chose the toilet roll holders and we went as far as stocking the fridge because the client literally wanted to be able to walk in with nothing at all to do.” Originally conceived as a family home, the client decided part way through that the house was to be put on the market. And the home, which has a colourful history, has just been snapped up by 47-year-old British property mogul Marcus Cooper, who will have to pay £12m in stamp duty for his new purchase. Designed and built in the 1820s by architect Decimus Burton, who also built Buckingham Palace, 1 Cornwall Terrace was the official London residence of the New Zealand High Commissioner from 1955 until the 1970s. In 1975, it was infamously broken into by hippies who turned it into a squat. But the property looks set to enjoy glory days once

“The client was very happy with the finished result,” says Adam. And, it seems, 1 Cornwall Terrace, has certainly won over its new owner.

more. The exterior boasts a neo-classical Stucco elevation with Corinthian pilasters and a two-storey bay embellished with sculpted columns of the Greek goddess Artemis. There’s also a 40-metre long landscaped garden and sweeping double staircase which gives the grounds the appearance of a grand ballroom. So Dakota’s designers had a challenging brief to make sure what’s on the inside was as exquisite as the outside but the finished result means the interior is just as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as the exterior. “The client was very happy with the finished result,” says Adam. And, it seems, 1 Cornwall Terrace, has certainly won over its new owner.

SARAH BOWEN LIGHTING

On the high street for nearly eight years, Sarah Bowen Lighting was launched after its founders noticed a gap in the market place. "We felt there was nowhere here where you could get a higher end product," explains Sarah. "When we were speaking to the nice European brands, they were stocking in Manchester and then Edinburgh and missing the North East out so we wanted to bring these products to the market here." Sarah also offers bespoke items for those who want a light fitting made to a certain size to fit over their dining table or who want a lampshade in just the right hue to match the rest of their decor. She has noticed a recent move away from modern spotlights and chrome towards those wanting chandeliers in painted gold tones that are, perhaps, more in keeping with the age and style of period properties.

ONE thing that houses and cars have in common is the need to minimise their impact upon the environment and to maximise their efficiency to reduce soaring fuel costs.

126 | collection

I

n the case of houses there is a shift towards alternative energy sources for the less expensive generation of energy, such as solar, and the most effective use of insulation to prevent that energy seeping back into the atmosphere in the form of heat loss. Similarly, with the ÂŁ7 gallon for petrol and diesel now upon us, motor manufacturers reckon there has never been a more opportune time to consider fossil fuel avoiders. Various alternative energy sources, including hydrogen, ethanol, liquid petroleum gas and bio-fuels from plants have been trialled in recent years but the preferred option is now electricity. Car companies are so convinced of its potential that they are investing billions in the development of its generation and now believe that full electric vehicles will be accepted as a viable proposition among mainstream motorists.

They are not the hybrid vehicles that have been around for a while, such as the Toyota Prius, which use a combination of a petrol or diesel engine plus batteries. These are cars that use only batteries that need charging and have a plethora of regenerative devices within the vehicle to maintain and top-up the charge in a myriad of clever ways. This will be the year that sees the introduction of more vehicles of this type than any other, including the BMW i3 city car and the latest incarnation of the LEAF, which is now produced at Nissan’s Sunderland plant. The makers of these cars believe that they are now so sophisticated that they should no longer be considered quirky and are a genuinely practical proposition for daily use. This is borne out by the fact that the average journey for most motorists is apparently just 26 miles. The Nissan LEAF has an official range between charges of 125 miles in comparison to 140 miles for the BMW,

The Nissan LEAF has an official range between charges of 125 miles in comparison to 140 miles for the BMW, although in reality this translates into a real-world range of between 75 and 100 miles in each case.

although in reality this translates into a real-world range of between 75 and 100 miles in each case. The five-seat Nissan hatchback uses an automatic CVT transmission and accelerates to 60mph in 11.9 seconds, with a 90mph top speed. Nissan says it is encouraged by the 50,000 sales of the first-generation Japanese-made LEAF since its introduction in 2011 plus a significant increase in the number of European public charging points from 12,000 to 20,000 in a year. The 2013 LEAF incorporates more than 100 improvements over its predecessor, which some

users complained was too expensive, took too long to charge, had an inadequate driving range and could be a financial liability because of the cost of replacement batteries, which may also lose their efficiency over time. In its latest guise the price drops by £2,000 to about £23,500 with the £5,000 Government grant, the range is extended by 15 miles and the onboard charger’s capacity rises from the typical household output of 10 amps to the commercial 32 amps for a more powerful boost. There is a new five-year warranty to cover the lithium-ion batteries, which will be replaced if they lose more capacity than expected. The latest LEAF is packed with electronic driver aids, such as the ability to programme the sat-nav from home or office on a PC or tablet and there is a network of onboard cameras to generate a 360degree overhead image on the dashboard screen for easier parking. Its improved environmental credentials extend to its manufacture too, with the introduction of bio-fabric seat coverings derived from sugar cane in preference to those previously made from 40 per cent recycled plastic bottles. BMW is investing heavily in its electric car projects too, with the first mainstream model being the i3 city car that is due here later this year. Described as a compact coupe, it is bigger than a standard Mini and offers more cargo space despite the bulk of its batteries. Made primarily of F1-style carbon fibre, the three-door four-seat newcomer uses running gear similar to that of the low-production BMW 1 Series ActiveE. It incorporates an electric motor sending the equivalent of almost 170bhp of power and 185lb ft of torque, or pulling power to the rear wheels. This comes courtesy of lithium-ion batteries >>

<< located beneath the flat floor, which drive an electric motor built as low as possible into the axle mechanism at the rear. It means that the centre of gravity is low, which helps the ride and handling to make the most of the inherent sportiness of the car, which can accelerate from standstill to 60mph in 7.2 seconds. There are no gears as such, simply a single-speed transmission, which enables the car to surge from 50mph to 70mph in just six seconds for safe overtaking. This makes it as quick as a Mini Cooper S, although maximising the performance reduces the driving range, which is why the top speed is electronically limited to just over 90mph. The car is equipped with a navigation system featuring BMW i ConnectedDrive services, which in addition to the usual sat-nav guidance system incorporates a dynamic range display. This produces an arc on the map to indicate the places that the car can reach, taking into account the current driving style, road types and prevailing traffic conditions. It takes six hours to fully recharge from a conventional 240-volt socket and about one hour to achieve 80 per cent charge from a special high-speed charger. The i3 will also be able to take advantage of inductive charging, in which it is parked over a charger embedded into the ground, which charges the batteries wirelessly by using magnetic fields.

Although BMW’s research suggests that the car’s range and recharging facilities will meet the demands of most users, there will also be a model on offer with a range extender, known as REx. This adds a 600cc two-cylinder modified motorcycle engine, which extends the range to about 190 miles but swallows up cargo space in the process. The new i3 will herald the beginning of the arrival of a full range of electric Beemers, with prices to be announced in due course.

It’s one of the most quoted lines from Shakespeare’s work and you only have to dine at one of these venues

to understand why music is irrevocably tied up with food and love. Liz Hands takes a look at eateries that serve up an auditory feast along with treats for the taste buds.

WITH a rich history, The Cherry Tree has built on its musical heritage to provide entertainment for diners. Originally the Jesmond Telephone Exchange, the building was then used by the Scouts as rehearsal rooms for their gang shows. Extended and refurbished, The Cherry Tree now offers the perfect setting for live music with a stage that can be viewed from the ground floor and a mezzanine level which creates a dramatic theatre-style feel. “We inherited a grand piano which had been used by the Boy Scouts for their rehearsals,” explains owner Peter Wardle. “It was made in the 19th century by one of the oldest piano makers in the world, John Brinsmead & Sons of London, and this was the origin of live music at The Cherry Tree.” Starting with a piano soloist on Saturday and Sundays, bands were then brought in on Monday nights. Musicians now come from far and wide to play at the venue, where head chef Tony Riches serves up timeless, modern classics. “The music is broadly from the middle of the road jazz genre,” says Peter. “We avoid the far out highly

THE weekend starts earlier at Fratelli’s with live music on the last Thursday of every month. A lively, family-friendly Italian eaterie, Fratelli owner Fabrizio Saba said the event had started in a bid to say thank you to loyal clients. “Being open seven days a week for so many years,” he said, “we really wanted to give our customers something a little different. That’s the reason we do it. “It does pull people in when we have live music and some people like to get up and have a bit of a dance too. It’s nothing too wild though. We have English and Italian singers, Michael Bublé and Rat Pack type music. We want to provide the right background music to complement the food.” And, with two-for-one cocktails offered on Thursdays too, Fabrizio hopes diners will enjoy an aperitif before sampling delicious Italian fayre. JESMOND DENE HOUSE

ONCE a month, on a Friday evening, Jesmond Dene House’s Great Hall is transformed into Newcastle’s answer to Ronnie Scotts. At £40, which includes music and a three-course meal, the supper dates are always fully booked. Resident musicians The Paul James Band provide the big draw along with guest performers who add their own twist on the event. “The setting of the Great Hall with beautiful wooden panels and tea lights everywhere helps create a great atmosphere,” says vocalist Laura Adams. “By performing a range of styles from different eras and artistes, we aim to keep the Jazz Suppers appealing to as wide an audience as possible; people who like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and also people who enjoy more modern crooners such as Michael Bublé and Jamie Cullum.” Jesmond Dene House marketing manager Nicky Sherman adds: “We first started Jazz Suppers in 2007. We wanted to create a bistro-type, jazzy atmosphere with great food and great live music. “As the suppers have progressed, the philosophy behind why we set them up hasn’t really changed. We have found people like to have their own table and be able to choose from a menu selection on the

night. Sometimes people come casually dressed and sometimes they dress up – but the option for both is there. “Some people might choose to come as a group of friends and some as a couple to celebrate a birthday. We have had, on a number of occasions, larger corporate tables also joining and using the supper as a way of entertaining clients.” JESMOND DENE HOUSE Jesmond Dene Road, NE2 2EY T: 0191 212 3000 E: info@jesmonddenehouse.co.uk www.jesmonddenehouse.co.uk

THE TREEHOUSE RESTAURANT THIS magical, twinkly, tree-top venue plays host to saxophonist Andrea de Vere and traditional Northumbrian music by Andrew and Margaret Watchorn during selected dates this summer. “At The Treehouse,” says manager David Scott, “we’re always looking for ways to make the diner’s experience that bit more special, and having live music seems a natural step for us – marrying the unique setting of the restaurant and the locallysourced food, with local musicians that give a unique performance fits perfectly for us.” David believes it is very important to choose music that is “stimulating but not too intrusive” for the diners. “Musicians often send us CDs of their work so we listen carefully and get in contact with those who we think fit the bill. “We hold most of our music nights on a Sunday, so we try to find local musicians who create something different to each other, to keep the atmosphere fresh. We have wonderful traditional Northumbrian smallpipes and fiddle from The Watchorns, smooth jazz from the sound of Andrea De Vere’s saxophone

and relaxing piano music from Dominic Saul, who has also been known to sing for us.” “All of our musicians have been extremely popular with diners. We think there is something really special about somebody delivering real music in person; it creates occasion for the diner, which can’t be matched by the restaurant’s iPod.” THE TREEHOUSE RESTAURANT The Alnwick Garden, NE66 1YU T: 01665 511 350 E: info@alnwickgarden.com www.alnwickgarden.com

SILENT NIGHT FROM combining music with food, to combining songs with film, Krista Puranen Wilson and her band have been providing the soundtrack to silent movies. Playing at the Star and Shadow Cinema at the Ouseburn and Tyneside Cinema, Krista, aka Lady Koo, and her band the Kooky Kitchen have brought what she describes as a mix of “naughty, notorious nostalgia” to movie events. Formed in 2010, Lady Koo and the Kooky Kitchen now consist of vocalist Krista, Jonathan Lee on the ukulele and guitar, Mick Young on guitar and double bassist Sarah Van Jellie. The quartet play an eclectic mix of rag time, tin pan alley, blues, Charleston, jazz and fox trot tunes, all in the spirit of, or from, the 1920s and 30s. “I was singing in a local jazz band,” says Krista, who has been singing since she was 15, “but much as I love jazz, I decided it was time to think about what I really wanted to do. “I’ve always been fascinated by the 1920s and 30s – everything from the fashion to the architecture and the whole ethos, the new way of being as a woman. I’ve always loved people like Josephine Baker and Mae West and I realised ‘this is who I am’. It all fit into place.” Asked to put together an act for the national ukulele festival, Ukelear Meltdown at the Star and Shadow, Lady Koo and the Kooky Kitchen was formed and has since played gigs at The Late Shows, Burlesque performances at As You Like It, silent film nights and at The Cluny. “We’re not really a function band,” explains Krista. “We’ve been asked to do vintage-type events, speakeasy type of happenings. They fit us perfectly because the band gives a kind of cabaret performance. We’re meant to be seen as well as heard.”

THE JOLLY FISHERMAN

VALLUM FARM

A Craster institution, this 166-year-old pub has undergone something of a transformation over the past couple of years. New owner, former Falcons rugby player David Whitehead, has not only extended and refurbished the historic building, but has drafted in the culinary talents of head chef John Blackmore to revamp the menu. All the old favourites are still there – the famous Craster kipper paté and homemade crab soup – but there’s also the addition of a long-needed sophisticated evening menu too.

THE BLACK OLIVE CAFÉ Tucked away in Alnwick’s historic Castle Quarter, The Black Olive Café is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and fresh, locally-sourced food. The menu features traditional favourites with a bit of a twist, like the breakfast pie, with sausage, bacon, egg, mushrooms and black pudding, all topped with pastry. There’s always a good vegetarian selection too. And when the sun does come out, there’s southfacing outdoor seating to make the most of the English summer.

An artisan hub created by farmers Peter and Vicky Moffit, you could easily eat breakfast, lunch and dinner here, and still not have sampled all the scrumptiousness Vallum has to offer. The latest resident is former North East Chef of the Year David Kennedy whose new restaurant is a true field-to-plate concept, using fresh produce from the surrounding countryside. Then there’s the shop, which sells sirloin steak reared on the farm; the new bakery; Ken and Tracy Holland’s North Country Growers which supplies micro and heritage veg to Michelin-starred chefs; Bywell smokery for fish, meat and game; and the award-winning ice cream made from the milk of the Vallum herd. Our tummies are rumbling just thinking about it…

OUT & ABOUT Collection ARCHER’S JERSEY ICE CREAM JESMOND

CHARLOTTE’S BUTCHERY

Who would have thought such yumminess as green apple sorbet and passion fruit ice cream would have been born out of a crisis? John and Susan Archer started Archer’s Jersey Ice Cream with a herd of Jersey Cows, which graze the clover-rich pastures of their Tees Valley farm, after losing their Holstein Friesians to Foot and Mouth. At the new branch in Jesmond, there are 16 flavours on offer at any one time and, you can even have your two favourites made into an ice cream cake for a special occasion.

We may be firmly in the 21st century, but that doesn’t stop new customers from doing a double take when they spot that butcher Charlotte Harbottle is indeed female. Once they’ve got over that little novelty though, they’re soon bowled over by her enthusiasm and the quality of her produce. The 25-year-old, who opened in Gosforth earlier this year, has brought in new cuts of meat including mutton and veal. “I’ve introduced recipe cards with things like ox cheek casserole, which are going down really well,” she says. “And, since the horse meat scandal, people are asking more questions about the traceability of their meat, which can only be a good thing.”

DELI AT NUMBER 4

PEPPERMINT TEAROOM

It was Taylor’s Wet Fish Shop for as long as we can remember. Now, number 4 Beaumont Street, Hexham, is home to a deli run by good friends Jayne Pope and Jill Dickinson. The pair, who both took voluntary redundancy from Hexham Police Station, to follow their culinary dream, stock scrumptious local produce including cheese from Doddington’s dairy and bread from Allendale bakery. Opened in March 2012, the shop is steadily building a reputation for home baking – including Jayne’s delicious lemon drizzle cake and Jill’s homemade icecream for grown-ups which gives a whole new meaning to the cocktail hour; gin and lemon or apricot and amaretto anyone?

GIBSIDE Georgian grand design on a spectacular scale, Gibside is also a food lover’s delight. There are bi-monthly farmers’ markets selling local produce and the Potting Shed café where you can stop off for a homemade cake. The site’s tenant farmer is also getting ready to produce Gibside beef and plans are afoot for more fruit and veg to be grown in situ. Every Friday night, the National Trust joins forces with Wylam brewery to open a beer garden for those who like their real ale accompanied by a stunning backdrop. And, after all that excess, there are 15 miles of footpath on which to walk it off.

A genteel haven of minty green décor, vintage china and afternoon teas, the Peppermint Tearoom is proving to be a hit with customers after being taken over and revamped by friends Carol Flint and Nicky Wilson. The pair pride themselves on using local produce. “We get our meat from Martin’s in Morpeth, our bread from Glentons bakery and our tea from Ringtons,” says Carol. The menu includes traditional cream teas for two and new deserts such as homemade Mars bar cheesecake.

CHARITY

status Liz Hands meets three people preparing to embark on adventures for good causes ST OSWALD’S

It may have caused flight chaos for holidaymakers when it spewed forth a cloud of ash in 2010, but for Vicki Pringle, climbing Iceland’s Mount Eyjafjallajokull offers a way to say thank you to the doctors and nurses who cared for her mum in her final days. Vicki’s mum Nicola, herself a carer, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer eight years ago. At the time, she underwent a hysterectomy and chemotherapy. But, says Vicki: “Within months, the cancer was back. It returned about six times and, each time, she had more chemo and she’d be fine for a while. But, in the end, it spread everywhere.” The family were offered respite care and chose St Oswald’s Hospice, Gosforth. “We thought she’d be out in five or six days,” says Vicki, 27, a dental nurse from Amble. “But she started to rapidly go downhill. “We knew it wasn’t looking good and my mum would never want to upset me, but she told my dad she didn’t think she would see Christmas.” Nicola died on October 11, 2011. She was just 48. One of the ways Vicki coped was to start fundraising for St Oswald’s. She has already done a St Oswald’s Way walk, helped out at the Great North Run and even done a skydive, which she says “passed in a blur”. She is now planning a trek with St Oswald’s, travelling to Iceland for a five-day hike, including climbing the volcano that led to hundreds of flights being grounded. Vicki needs to raise £3,000 for the trip. You can donate to Vicki’s fund at: https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/vickipringle1 or go to http://www.stoswaldsuk.org to sign up for the trek.

STROKE ASSOCIATION

When keen rugby player Keith Newbigin had a stroke at the age of 45, it came as a huge shock to his family. But, having defied the odds to make a good recovery, his three sons are now planning a 200-mile cycle ride to mark the 10th anniversary of his illness. The trio - James, 23, and younger brothers Will, 21, and Pete, 19 - will ride from Barrow-in-Furness to Northumberland in August, to raise money for the Stroke Association. “Dad was the last person anyone would expect to have a stroke,” says James, a community development officer for Harlequins Rugby Club, Twickenham. “He was chairman of Northern Rugby Club and was heavily involved in coaching. And, because he has three boys, when he got home from work, he was always playing football in the garden.” But, in 2003, when James was just 13, the teenager was faced with calling 999 when his dad collapsed at home. “Mum was out and Dad came into my room while I was doing homework and just fell onto the bed so I rang for the ambulance,” says James. “Mum was very good at covering up what was happening so we weren’t aware of the severity of the situation, but he came very close to dying that night. “Dad defied the odds to survive and to walk again. We’ve come through it as a family and it’s made us stronger and closer.” James and his brothers, from Ponteland, are hoping to raise £5,000 through their gruelling bike ride, which starts on August 16. PROJECT TRUST

Seventeen-year-old Eppie Beveridge is getting ready for a gap year with a difference. While her friends prepare to start university, the St Thomas More Academy pupil will be heading to South Africa to work in a children’s home. Eppie, who is currently studying ethics and philosophy, art and history, will be traveling with Project Trust, an educational charity which sends students to Africa, South America and Asia to give them the opportunity to make a difference. “The project combines teaching and social care,” explains Eppie. “I’ll be teaching children simple things like the difference between left and right as well as helping them with speaking and writing English. I’ll also be working with children who have experienced abuse and neglect. “I’m not going to South Africa as a tourist, but I’ll be part of a community working with local people.” Eppie is hoping spending 12 months away from her Whitley Bay home will help her decide what she wants to do in the future. “All my friends are off to university or starting apprenticeships and I wanted a year off,” she says. “So, I thought I may as well do something really worthwhile. Going out there and experiencing a different culture will give me a new outlook on life.” Eppie needs to raise £7,000 to fund her trip.
