PURPOSE

I a m delighted to welcome our many readers to the Spring/Su mmer edition of Collection Magazine… … and to thank those clients who have used Sanderson Young, for their loyalty and support over the last 15 years since I set the company up.

2014

is proving to be a very rewarding year, with my company experiencing some of its strongest sales and market activity since we were formed. There were clear signs last year that the confidence in the housing market was recovering and this year that confidence has continued, with net sales in April 2014 30 per cent ahead of the same time last year, which was already 25 per cent up on the previous year. I was very pleased to attend a Bank of England meeting recently, where the Governor, Mark Carney, made it quite clear of his intentions to support a stable monetary and fiscal policy. His projection was that interest rates will slowly and gradually increase, but perhaps only to a level of around 2 per cent in 3 years’ time and this should give great peace of mind to people considering moving home, since they can afford to do so with interest rates and borrowings fixed at a sensible level. Recent property indices have identified that house prices are once again rising and whilst the North of England is unlikely to ever follow the amazing rates of increases seen “WITH HOUSE PRICES RISING AND in London, we will gradually see our properties rise in value over DEMAND EVER INCREASING FOR the next 12 months and in certain HOMES THROUGHOUT THE REGION, IT hotspots within the region that rise could be significant. It is fair to IS VITAL THAT PEOPLE CONSIDERING A reflect that in Gosforth, Jesmond, SALE OR THE LETTING OF A PROPERTY Corbridge and Bamburgh, values RECRUIT THE RIGHT TEAM AND HERE have definitely increased by perhaps as much as 10 per cent AT SANDERSON YOUNG WE HAVE GOT within the mid-price levels due to THE EXPERTISE AND KNOWLEDGE TO excess demand and low supply. Sanderson Young of our relationship with our builder clients. We very much look forward to working on some landmark sites within the region over the next 12 months. The growth of Sanderson Young over the last 15 years has been interesting and I am very pleased that we continue to act for so many of our clients with repeat and referred business. I am extremely proud of my team and the experience, knowledge and skills of so many excellent estate agents within our offices. Both of our regional offices in Gosforth have witnessed unprecedented growth over the last 12 months and I am glad to say that we have also recruited 3 new members of staff within those branches to further invest in the quality of the service we are providing and to support the excellent level of business that is being carried out. In 2014 we are investing well over £100,000 in the ongoing development of our website, new media, social media and portal support. Well over 60 per cent of our viewings are generated through the internet. The manner in which we communicate with so many of our clients is highly efficient and very comprehensive. Our clients believe in high quality, strong visual representation and I am delighted that so many of our homes are selling so quickly due to the proven marketing methods that we use. Our new website, to be launched in the summer of this year, will see even larger photographs and an automated adaptation which will expand and shrink the visual impact of the website to the device being used, so that those using iphones or Android phones will have as strong an image as those viewing property on their desktop or laptop. High definition, professional photography, state of the art videos and aerial images provide our clients with the best interpretation of the beautiful homes we sell and let. Other investments in 2014 will include fresh new window displays for all of the branches, with illuminated light pockets increasing the impact of the offices from the roadside. New homes sites being launched in the summer will lead to the recruitment of new staff and an increasing new homes division which, over the next 12 months, should return our business levels similar to those of the early 2000s. Queues used to form outside our marketing suites for the urgent and awaited release of the first phase of a development. Please let us know if you are interested in a new home and we will ensure you are on our mailing list for any early releases. Our coffee shop at Café No. 95 will also witness an investment this year. We hope to introduce two new booths and sit an extra 16 people, reducing the coffee counter and increasing the eating area which is popular with so many of our local clients. I know Rod, our Manager, is very excited about the changes which will hopefully take place in the summer. With house prices rising and demand ever increasing for homes throughout the region, it is vital that people considering a sale or the letting of a property recruit the right team and here at Sanderson Young we have got the expertise and knowledge to advise and guide you, so as to maximise your selling price or your rental income in the shortest possible time. We look forward to building on the foundations of our success and to a healthy and prosperous housing market with a team of experts who will guide you every step of the way. I very much hope that you enjoy reading this superb magazine and appreciate some of the magnificent houses, including our cover story of The Pavilion at Coldingham Bay, just north of Berwick, which represents one of the finest beach houses I have ever seen. It is quite simply stunning. Enjoy the read! Very best wishes DUNCAN G YOUNG Dip.Est.Man.FNAEA Managing Director SANDERSON YOUNG duncan.young@sandersonyoung.co.uk

An Exceptional Performance Each time I am asked to reflect on the previous six months, I can not believe how quickly the time has passed. However, I have never seen as much change in recent years as I have so far in 2014. The property market has skyrocketed in confidence, and I am delighted to report that the company is 30% up on business from this time last year. Every department in the company has a part to play in this success and we are continuing to grow in strength as a truly expert team showing constant professionalism and a focus on exceptional service levels. I do truly believe that it is because of this we achieve premium figures for our vendors and landlords. We are also seeing that the top end of the marketplace is certainly performing as never before, which is astounding and thrilling in equal measure. The Rare! brand of Sanderson Young has reported sales 45% ahead of 2007 figures; a

phenomenal result. This has been caused by the much needed movement from the middle market upwards, where changes at this level were starting to show twelve months ago. The only factor potentially forcing somewhat of an unfortunate halt to this steady movement is a definite shortage of stock in “hot spot” areas throughout the region. As a result, we are seeing that some properties could often have been sold ten times over at premium figures, however in some cases we are achieving sales where vendors have proceedable offers on their homes but unfortunately nothing to move to. These breaks in the marketplace are concerning and we need to make sure that this demand continues to be met. If you are considering a potential move, we would therefore be delighted to assist you further, starting with a no obligation valuation and informal chat about the market.

new homes sales is unrivalled in the region and we are currently advising a number of developers on the launch of their sites. We are very proud to be working alongside David Wilson Homes in the promotion of La Sagesse which will be brought to the market next year. This exciting instruction to handle one of the most prestigious sites in the region is a result of a long term working commitment to the developer and we are delighted to further cement our position as premium selling agents in the region. In addition to our ongoing work in the development field, we are also able to provide professional consultancy advice to our clients who are reviewing their property portfolios. Whether advice is required for personal reasons such as for probate or matrimonial matters, or for corporate advice on a company’s assets, we offer a discreet, bespoke service.

Development Activity Activity in the housing market continues to step up and average house prices have maintained their upward climb in the last few months, underpinned by low interest rates and the Government’s pledge to assist the house building industry. The measures announced in the Budget of extending the Help to Buy equity scheme to 2020 are a further boost to the new build market and the need for housing is back on the agenda. At Sanderson Young we have seen the results of this activity very clearly and we are providing advice to our clients around maximising their assets. We not only act for developers and public sector bodies, but also individual landowners with specific property requirements. We are seeing increased activity and confidence in clients seeking development appraisal advice which, in turn, has led to successful land sales for such developments. Our experience in handling

he former Rockliffe Hall chef has only just opened his own restaurant and, already, talk in the region has turned to when the House of Tides will win a Michelin star. But it’s not something Kenny is fixating on. “Do I want a star? Of course I want a star,” he says. “I want a star for Newcastle, I want a star for the restaurant, I want a star for the staff. Am I going to kill myself or the business for a star? No. “We want us to survive as a business and the main priority is to get our product right first, to get our concept developed. If it works and we’re consistent and we’re cooking the best food in Newcastle, then accolades will come. That’s the way to look at it.” It’s no wonder expectations are high, however, when you consider Kenny’s gastronomic triumphs so far. The 37-year-old was awarded his first Michelin star in the Scilly Isles at St Martin’s on the Isle before gaining another star at Seaham Hall’s the White Room. His last post before setting “DO I WANT A STAR? up on his own on Newcastle’s Quayside was at Rockliffe Hall OF COURSE I WANT in Hurworth, Darlington. But, A STAR,” HE SAYS. Kenny is perhaps best known “I WANT A STAR FOR for his television work, having appeared on Saturday Kitchen NEWCASTLE, and The Great British Menu. I WANT A STAR FOR Clearly, he has fond memories of The Great British Menu, THE RESTAURANT, which he was drafted into at I WANT A STAR FOR the last minute after another THE STAFF. chef dropped out, as one of the AM I GOING TO KILL dishes he cooked on the show, the Craster Fish Pie, features MYSELF OR THE prominently on the menu of his new venture. Other dishes when we visit include Lindisfarne Oyster served up with cucumber, lime and ginger; Goosnargh chicken with asparagus, peas and hazelnuts; and a dark chocolate pave with English pear, red wine and pistachio. The concept behind the menu is very much about using fresh, seasonal, local ingredients. “You go to a lot of restaurants and wonder about how fresh the produce is,” he says. “Are there things in the fridge that have been there over the weekend? Did the meat come in on Tuesday and it’s been in the fridge for two days? >>

“WHEN YOU OPEN UP, PEOPLE WILL CRITIQUE YOU FROM THE START AND IT’S ALWAYS HARD TO GET EVERYTHING RIGHT FROM DAY ONE,” 14 | Collection

<< “The beauty of the tasting menu is at the end of every night our fridges are empty, so we start afresh every day. That’s why we don’t open for lunch, because the guys crack on all day getting ready for dinner. “We speak to our suppliers all the time – Hobsons for fish, Freemans for meat, Ken Holland for his veg and we ask them what’s growing well and what’s changing. As soon as things start to come into season, we start developing new menus. When new things appear for spring, we want to be the first ones to have them on the menu.” It’s a way of working that certainly seems to be going down well with his first diners. Posts on the likes of Tripadvisor are mostly full of praise, with comments including “we have experienced eating in some great restaurants and this is up there with the best”, “the food here is Michelin standard”, and “the food could not be faulted in any way” Another sums up “Was it worth it? Oooh yeah!” But, a minority of reviews have been scathing, something Kenny does take to heart. “When you open up, people will critique you from the start and it’s always hard to get everything right from day one,” he says. “Tasting is not everyone’s cup of tea but we just want people to come with an open mind. We do what we do, it’s our niche and it allows us to cook fresh every day. If that’s not a selling point, I don’t know what is. “Everyone is a food blogger, everyone is an expert, everyone has an opinion and that’s fine. That’s the age we live in. Some people think we’re fantastic, some people say we’re awful. Do I think we’re awful? No, I think we’re right up there. “The review that hurt the most was the Secret Diner, which compared our staff to a Jamie Oliver project. If we don’t give our staff a chance, where’s the dining scene going to go in the North East?”

The answer to that question is far if Kenny has anything to do with it. Despite any competition it would bring, he says he would love Newcastle to have a cluster of three or four Michelin-starred restaurants. And he has very clear ideas about the direction the House of Tides is heading in, with its own brand of relaxed fine dining. “Food needs to be fun,” he says. “You’ve got to be careful you don’t take it too seriously. I didn’t want to open a fine dining restaurant that was pretentious, where you couldn’t talk, where someone was at your shoulder pouring your wine every five seconds. I hate that, you want to be laid back otherwise it gets intrusive. “We also add theatre to our dishes, like the dry ice for the oyster dish. That’s gone down brilliantly and everyone is loving it. That’s the starting point. Now we think about what is the next theatre. We’re not trying to be the Fat Duck but we try to give that wow factor so people come away saying ‘you’ve got to try this place’.” That’s not to say even Kenny eats every meal there. “Would I eat my food every night? No, there are nights when I want to go to the Bridge Tavern for a steak or I want to go to The Broad Chare for some pigs ears or to Café 21 and have some calves liver with some lovely mashed potatoes. But, if I want to go out for a really good meal, that’s where we come in.” The ‘we’ is Kenny and his wife Abbie, who says she has accepted “I’m not going to see him very much at the moment”. But when we visit, Abbie is pitching in at the restaurant, arranging the flowers for the tables. “It’s hard but I’ve got a really supportive wife,” says Kenny. “We’re celebrating 10 years of marriage next month and 16 years of being together. She’s been with me since I was a commis chef with no money, when I moved to London where she was on more money than me and grafted a ridiculous amount of hours to support me. She’s followed me where I went with my career and sacrificed her own. “She’s been so supportive so it’s going to be a hard few years but she knows, financially, it’s about creating a better life for ourselves and our kids. So, I try to turn my phone off on Sunday and Monday. I can have Sunday for the kids, take them swimming, take them to the park, make biscuits with them. And, on Monday, I get to do things with my wife, take her shopping. I’m back to work on Tuesday. When I’m here, I’m here all week. I arrive at 11am and I’m here till 1am or 2am when we lock up. But, it’s worth it, because we’re living the dream.”

ood architecture has to succeed in two very different, and seemingly conflicting, areas. On the one hand a building must harmonise with its surroundings, on the other it must stand out and add to the visual impact of the landscape. Of course, this is not an easy combination to achieve but The Pavilion, a magnificent contemporary styled beach house on the wonderfully scenic Berwickshire coast, is an excellent example of what I’m talking about. This unique, four bedroom family home overlooks the pristine sands of Coldingham Bay and has been built into the hillside below St Abb’s Haven, a delightful 19th Century country house that once belonged to a remarkable Scotswoman named Jane Hay. Miss Hay was born in 1864 but instead of being tutored by a governess, like most well-to-do Victorian girls, she was sent away to school. She’d hoped to be a doctor but when illness prevented her from going to university she channelled her boundless energy into helping the destitute. Amongst her many acts of philanthropy, she founded a club for Working Girls in Edinburgh and travelled to Turkey to help Armenian refugees.

Sadly, on her return to England, her health began to deteriorate once more and she was advised by her doctors to live by the sea. She moved to St Abb’s, a picturesque Scottish fishing village twelve miles north of Berwick-upon Tweed and here she built, what was then, a modern house called St Abb’s Haven. In the hundred years since Miss Jane passed on, her lovely home became a hotel, before being converted into luxury holiday lets. Unfortunately the Edwardian summerhouse in the garden suffered from years of neglect but in 2010 the gardens were sold to a local developer. The derelict summerhouse was demolished and The Pavilion built in its place. It would have been easy for the developer and his architect to build a traditional Berwickshire cottage but The Pavilion has been designed to make an innovative architectural statement whilst enhancing its surroundings and providing its new owners with an outstanding family home. The signature gull-wing roof dips and soars skyward like the sea birds which nest in their thousands on the cliffs of St Abb’ s Head whilst the Welsh slate and cedar wood motifs echo the natural beauty of the countryside. successful blend of natural and manmade architecture, the steel and glass of the state-of-the-art Shucho glazing system allows uninterrupted views of the breathtaking seascape. Inside, the accommodation is arranged over two storeys and to maximise the advantages offered by the sloping terrain, the entrance lobby, kitchen and reception areas are on the upper storey whilst the four double-bedroom suites are on the lower. The living and dining area overlooks the beach and has doors that open onto the glazed balcony, which extends along the full length of the building. Similarly, each bedroom faces the sea and has access to the sun terrace which is finished in slate and stone. The bedrooms also boast built-in wardrobes and an en-suite shower or bathroom finished with stylish fixtures and fittings from luxury bathware designers Villeroy & Boch. As you might expect with such a groundbreaking home, the interior is equipped with CAT-V cabling, smart sockets and ‘intelligent’ wiring so lighting, heating and appliances can be controlled remotely from a laptop or mobile phone. << the newly landscaped grounds, which extend up and down the hillside, there is a beach hut which can be used for picnics or storing beach equipment. With its astonishing architecture, rural setting and enviable location, just an hour from Edinburgh or 90 minutes from Newcastle, this is the perfect home for anyone seeking the outdoor life and a distinctive family home. Coldingham Bay is renowned for having some of the best surfing in South East Scotland and for those who prefer less energetic pastimes there are tranquil walks along the cliffs followed by cosy evenings in the local pub. In fact, nearby Coldingham village boasts two pubs, a small supermarket and several cafes. Anyone who takes a stroll around this astonishing property can’t help thinking that Jane Hay would approve of The Pavilion. As well as being a philanthropist, she was an innovator who, for example, trained local fishermen, and women, in the use of the rocket fired lifelines. She was also a radical who refused to conform to the norms of Victorian society but above all she loved the gorgeous coastline around St Abb’s Head and the house she built here. I’m sure she’d be delighted that her philosophy of combining the latest architectural thinking with the timeless scenery of Coldingham Bay has been continued in The Pavilion. othing makes a fashion statement like a hat. So, it’s no wonder Los Angeles milliner to the stars Louise Green describes wearing one as like having a baby or a puppy, saying “everyone stops to coo and talk about it.” It’s a sentiment North East’s milliners would no doubt agree with. Unveiling new collections and subtle twists on favourite styles, the region’s hat makers will be in demand as the wedding invites start to flood in and tickets are bought for the likes of the Northumberland Plate Festival or Royal Ascot. Darlington-based Joel Alexander’s love affair with millinery began when he restyled a hat for his mum. Now, working from his own

studio in Houghton-le-side, Joel’s creations have featured in Vogue and adorned the heads of guests at the Royal wedding. He describes his fourth collection as his most accomplished to date. “Being a milliner isn’t like being a fashion designer,” he says. “I don’t draw, I just do. I might see a feather or a picture or be out for the day and see something which inspires me. “It’s not like fashion where you make a dress and then the skirt and top might just be variations of that. Each piece is quite dramatically different. Each collection usually consists of around 20 pieces and they’re all quite bold because the way I was brought up was if you’re getting dressed up, then you really get dressed up.” Along with his own creations, Joel also keeps a stock of other designers and he offers his own bespoke service. “Someone might come in and say I like this from this hat and this from that hat and I can add elements of each to make something unique. “Customers can choose off-the-shelf or we can play around with the design, choosing different colours, trims or feathers. I had one lady who came in and she wanted green and gold. The finished result was stunning. It can be daunting but I go through it all with them and it’s great to give them that freedom.” Joel offers occasion wear upstairs so you can pick up a full outfit while Sue Anderson at Thoroughly Modern Millinery, in Jesmond, urges customers to come to her with their outfit, so they can make sure they find the perfect hat. “We’re not precious about millinery,” she says. “We don’t ask our customers to wear white gloves when trying on our hats. After all, they won’t be wearing white gloves on the day. “What will be right depends on the shape of your face, your hairstyle and the type of event you’re attending. There are lots of variables. Is it on a beach, in church or in a country house? We find out as much as possible so we can give the right advice. We’ve designed for titled people and our ladies are often named best dressed on race days.” For Norma Miles, whose Berwick-based millinery studio is called Mad Hattie, it’s also important to go for a fitting wearing the foundation garments, shoes and hairstyle a woman intends to wear for their event, “so we can assess the effect of different styles and brim shapes.” Norma, who is also part of a musical duo called Mad Hattie and the Eclectic Guitarist, says her dream client would be the Duchess of Cambridge, who she describes as “always elegant without being over formal”. Joel also credits Kate Middleton with putting millinery on the map for a younger generation. “She is a young girl and people love to follow her style,” he says. “Lady Gaga has also raised the profile of millinery, for entirely different reasons. Millinery has never been so topical.” Hats, or rather fascinators, also hit the headlines when Ascot famously banned the wearing of them in the Royal Enclosure. The rules now state: “Fascinators are no longer permitted; neither are headpieces which do not have a base covering a sufficient area of the head (4inches or 10cm).” But Joel believes the rule is fair. “I can understand why they did it,”

he says, “because it keeps a standard. People were wearing smaller pieces from the high street that were little more than hair clips. Now, it’s okay to wear fascinators as long as the base is 10cm or more, which ensures they will be quite substantial.” Rebecca Buckle, who runs online-based Hatsnstuff, simply states whether her hats are Ascot Royal Enclosure-friendly. “It’s not really a ban on fascinators,” she explains, “just a ban on smaller headpieces. The issue is what is and what isn’t a fascinator. I always say it’s anything that doesn’t have a crown or a brim. We’re using the term hatinator more and more to refer to a cross between a hat and a fascinator.” Hatsnstuff is based in Darlington, but it is an online-only service. Usually, Rebecca stocks around 75 styles along with her bridal collection. “We leave some styles on for a long time because our customers like to re-order them in different colours. JOEL’S TIPS:

WE WANT OUR CUSTOMERS TO FEEL CONFIDENT AND COMFORTABLE IN WHAT THEY’RE WEARING RATHER THAN IT LOOKING AS IF THEY ARE BEING WORN BY THE HAT.”

<< happening on the high street because we pride ourselves on our hats being very wearable, so they’re not hugely outlandish, but there are some which are more elaborate than others. We want our customers to feel confident and comfortable in what they’re wearing rather than it looking as if they are being worn by the hat.” Pill box hats have been hugely popular for Hatsnstuff, with a new trend being the bridal pill box. “We started doing pill boxes for brides after a wedding show because everything seemed to be aimed at younger brides who wanted full veils, but that’s not for everyone,” says Rebecca. “We had one customer who sent us a photo of herself wearing a silver and white pillbox, which looked stunning, and another wore a coral dress with a coral pill box.” Hats from her studio are shipped across the world with most of Rebecca’s business being wedding based, but she also supplies to women who are off to the races at Newcastle, York, Doncaster and Musselburgh. “We offer a colour swatch service so we’ll send them a snippet of the materials we could use,” she says. “So, if they tell us their dress is mint green, we send them all the greens that could match. But, if it’s last minute, they might just send us a photo of their outfit, or I’ll go online if they tell me where they got their dress from. “They’ll ask for advice on which colour would look best, but it’s ultimately their decision. You see some advice being given about if you’ve got an oval face you need to wear this, or a square face then wear that. But that’s a bit old fashioned. When we do our shows, we get thousands of people come to try and they all look stunning. Choosing a hat is all down to personal taste, rather than rules or regulations – unless, of course, you’re in the Royal box at Ascot.”

ith some designer handbags costing an eyewatering amount, it’s no wonder we’re loath to throw them away, even when they have rips and stains. But a North East company has the answer. Based in Burnopfield, the Handbag Clinic is sent bags from all across the globe, which need a little, or a lot, of TLC. “We mainly get designer brands because if you’ve paid a lot for your bag, you want to take care of it. So we get a lot of Mulberry, Chanel, Hermes, Gucci, Christian Dior, Celine and Chloe. But we also get vintage bags, those which hold a lot of sentimental value.” Each month, the workshop receives around 120 bags for cleaning, repair, restoration or colour change. The Handbag Clinic has revamped bags for the likes of the Daily Mail and Celebrity Big Brother’s Liz Jones, So You Think You Can Dance’s Arlene Phillips and is busy repairing a 100-year-old doctor’s bag for the Duchess of Northumberland. Charlotte advises potential customers to call for a chat and send a photo of their bag so any damage can be assessed. - Always take your outfit so colours can be matched. - Avoid wearing the same colour throughout. If your outfit is plain, accessorise with colours and/or pattern, and vice versa. - Never wear a hat on the back of your head; tilt it, pull it low over the brow or wear it straight. - Never wear a hat with a brim wider than your shoulders, and never wear a hat narrower than your hair style. - Never buy or hire a hat you’re not completely happy with, choose a hat that makes you feel comfortable. - The label, or seam, always sits at the back of the head in line with your spine. - To add height, go for a high crown and/or an upturned brim, try to avoid a downturned brim or a veil. - Try on as many different styles, sizes and colours as possible to find your ideal hat. - Take your time.

RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN FOR YOUR MONEY

This year’s world famous Great North Run is going to be like no race ever run before. Brendan Foster,

the event’s mastermind, tells Brian Nicholls why.

i

t’s now a global spectacle annually – thousands of flamboyant and sometimes even oddly attired runners pouring across the famous Tyne Bridge as the RAF’s Red Arrows display team roar overhead, trailing red, white and blue slipstreams in tribute. This is the Great North Run, the world’s biggest half marathon, cheered on by 255,000 spectators en route (with millions more tuned in on TV). Brendan Foster, creator of the event held since 1981, calls this annual tsunami-like wave of enthusiasm, “the biggest running family anywhere.” And this year’s extra special. On September 7 it will be the world’s first mass participation run in which a millionth runner has crossed its finishing lines. This will pip even New York’s marathon, celebrating its millionth finisher a couple of months later, in November. While GNR organisers have a rough idea where that presently unknown runner will come in their field, they won’t tell till the day. They do say, though, it won’t be one of the event’s elite runners who take part. It could be a regular entrant. Or someone in the throng for the first time. And it could be a man or a woman, young or old. The energy, enthusiasm and vision of Hebburn born Brendan, former Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist and BBC Sport commentator, prevail throughout. In 1964, at 16, he was enthralled watching the Ethiopian Abebe Bikila win the Tokyo Olympics marathon. He resolved to be a runner too. He became a chemistry

teacher meanwhile, but by 1973 had smashed the world record for the two miles at Crystal Palace. In the following year he won 5,000m gold at the European Championships in Rome, broke the 3,000m world record on his home track, Gateshead, and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He went on, in 1976, to capture the UK’s only track and field medal at Montreal Olympics – a 10,000m bronze – and won the 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games in 1978. While preparing for his last Olympics at Moscow in 1980, he entered New Zealand’s famous Round the Bays race and found himself one of 10,000 runners. The biggest mass entry he’d seen previously was 1,300 competitors in Britain’s National Cross Country Championships. A seed of inspiration was planted. He determined, on retirement, to see North East England enjoy something comparable to Round the Bays. “We decided to make the Great North Run a half marathon,” he recalls. “No-one had done it before, and we were all learning with no idea if anyone would even turn up.” Brendan thought with luck maybe 5,000 entrants would go on that first run in 1981. In fact more than double that, 12,000, fixed a number to their chest and set off. Mike McLeod, a local favourite, was first home. He retained his title the following year then went on to win the 10,000m silver medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Today the charity fundraiser is the fastest growing event of its kind in the world, and after 33 years of persuading our nation to prove to itself that running makes you fit, Brendan looks forward particularly to identifying the one millionth runner to complete the 13.1 mile event at South Shields. He may get “a bit emotional”, he admits, when the computer marks that runner in. In 2001 the half-millionth finisher was a young woman. Thrilled with her prize of a Greek holiday for two, she asked the part-time steward who’d escorted her to the award rostrum: “Do you fancy coming?” Did he not? It turned out she was single and he’d already recognised her from an earlier chance meeting. After their holiday together they married and now, says Brendan, they have three children,

proving how running can be romantic as well as demanding. Brendan, now in his mid 60s, tells us at Collection that he’s already planning in several ways through his company Nova International to get another 1m people to take up running by 2020. Why? “It’s the most egalitarian sport in the world, and when you’re a runner you want other people to run. It’s good for you and should be encouraged. I still run three to four times a week now... slowly!” He moved on from teaching to join the international sportswear firm Nike, and rose to vicepresident of Nike Europe. Then “NEWCASTLE ISN’T in 1988 he and three friends set up Nova International, which THE CENTRE OF THE to raise around £50m GLOBE FOR EVERYONE. reckons a year for charities through BUT WE’RE AT THE sponsorship secured at the GNR and its sister events. In 2010 the VERY CENTRE OF firm was entered into England MASS-PARTICIPATION Athletics’ Hall of Fame. Brendan himself is a CBE. RUNNING AND THIS Tyneside itself, the run is RACE IS THE WINNER.” For more than a spectacle. With almost three quarters of the entrants coming from outside the North East, it brings £15.7m into the local economy and raises hotel occupancy to 99% the night before the run. “I’m really proud we’re about to be the world’s first run with a millionth finisher,” Brendan tells us. “Newcastle isn’t the centre of the globe for everyone. But we’re at the very centre of massparticipation running and this race is the winner.”

Dividends are tangible evidence of a company’s selfbelief. Regardless of whether a company’s share price goes up or down, the impact of dividend yield is always positive”. “In the 1980s and 1990s shares were delivering such high price returns that dividends made a relatively low contribution to the total return. Partner of The Morpeth Practice, commented on the dilemma for savers posed through deposits. “The bank or building society is the right place for the money that we need in the short term or for an emergency fund, but deposits will not meet the longer-term needs for maintaining the spending power of our capital. UK interest rates remain at their lowest level in history and market expectations are that they are unlikely to increase in the near future. History also shows how the long-term trend between inflation and interest rates has changed in recent years, but the challenge for savers and investors remains the same – how to maintain the spending power of capital and standard of living”. Nearer Far BY

With some of the world’s most stunning scenery, picture-postcard villages and top notch restaurants serving up delectable local produce, it’s no wonder we’re staying closer to home for our holidays. Liz Hands takes a look at the trend for the gastronomic “nearaway”.

TRAVEL The Staith House

i A NEW REPORT PREDICTING THE BIGGEST TRAVEL TRENDS FOR 2014 SUGGESTED HOLIDAYMAKERS WOULD BE OPTING FOR A “NEARAWAY,”

t’s often said we’re a nation of homebodies. And, if recent research is anything to go by, we’re also a nation of foodies. Now, it seems we’re combining the two by taking the Staycation to a whole new level and exploring what’s on our doorstep while sampling some of the gastronomic delights on offer close to home. A new report predicting the biggest travel trends for 2014 suggested holidaymakers would be opting for a “nearaway,” choosing a break not just within Britain, but within a 50-mile radius of their own home. Meanwhile, a VisitEngland survey showed the importance we place on good food while on holiday. Last year, as a nation, we made 13 million visits to a food festival or farmers’ market and 26.2 million of us said we wanted to go to a food festival on our next trip. The research also revealed nearly eight in 10 of us wanted to dine at restaurants serving local dishes, so new openings and old favourite venues in the region should find a very receptive audience. Alison McKeith, who runs Coastal Retreats with her sister Fiona, has a collection of carefully selected properties on her books, including the breathtaking North Star House in Bamburgh. Impeccably decorated, it has views of Bamburgh Castle, a games room and a quirky children’s room with bunk beds designed to look like rowing boats. “We’ve noticed a lot of people are asking whether there’s a good restaurant nearby, particularly couples who are coming for a romantic break,” she says. “Northumberland has really upped its game in terms of eating places. Often we’ll be telling guests if they want to go to a certain restaurant on their first night, they’ll have to book. “A huge proportion of our guests come from Newcastle, so there’s definitely something in that idea of a 50-mile radius. That’s not to say we don’t get people coming from further afield but I think people are having more holidays so, for their>> North Star House

<< second or third break, they might decide to stay closer to home.” Another property nearby, also suitable for large groups, is Cheviot View which is a short walk from Beadnell Bay’s pristine sands. Margaret Matheson, managing director of Grace Darling Holidays, markets Cheviot View. “Northumberland is often praised for its natural beauty, fascinating historical links and charming country appeal,” she says. “But, a detail sometimes overlooked is the fact the North East also has a very proud reputation for its fabulous food. “Home to seaside ports and fishing towns aplenty, the freshest possible produce from nature’s larder makes this part of England a delight for foodies. Surrounded by the River Tweed and a long North Sea coastline, fresh seafood and shellfish is available in abundance and there are many restaurants making the most of this.” Slightly further south sit Lemmington Cottages, two holiday homes within the Lemmington Estates, owned by home builder Jabin Cussins and his wife Sophie. “One is very traditional and one is all cedar and glass,” says Jabin. “We get people from all over the country but there are lots who grew up in the North East who have now moved down south but they like to come back for their holidays. Alnwick has a renowned food festival, the farmers’ markets and good restaurants. Then, there’s The Ship Inn in Newton which is always popular and the Old Boat House in Amble.” Amble’s Old Boat House restaurant is a fairly new addition to the North East food scene. Once the port’s lifeboat house, it now serves up fish fresh off the boats of local fishermen. “The food scene in the North East has come on so much in the last 10 to 15 years,” says chef Richard Simm. “Food has become a massive part of the holiday experience. People want to eat the scenery so to The Jolly Fisherman

speak. If they’re next to the sea, they want to eat fresh fish. Amble is changing, but not too much. People like the fact it’s not a tourist trap, that it’s a working port where they can see the fishing boats bringing in their catch. There might be a box of crabs or fish by the door that’s just arrived. We’re not plush and we’re not flash, but we are real. “I’m always amazed at the amount of people who make the trip just for the restaurant. We get people from York and Edinburgh who discovered us while they were on holiday here. Now, they might come for a night in a B&B, go to Alnmouth beach during the day and then come to us for dinner and make a night of it, basing their holiday around us.” The Northumberland coast has developed into something of a foodie hub. There are festivals and markets devoted to local, seasonal produce taking place most weekends. And, along with the Old Boat House and The Ship Inn, there are a host of good restaurants to choose from. Meticulously refurbished, The Jolly Fisherman in Craster serves up the area’s famous Craster kippers, artisan bread and fresh crab while Bamburgh’s The Mizen Head prides itself on getting the best local ingredients from “boat to plate and farm to fork” within a matter of hours. The menu features whole lobster from Seahouses. Elsewhere in the region, North Shields Fish Quay is another seafood lover’s delight. “THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF INSPIRATION THAT HAS COME FROM THE BRILLIANT FOOD PUBS IN LONDON. IT’S KNOWLEDGEABLE BUT NOT IN YOUR FACE.”

The Dolphin Pub, The Staith House specialises in food which John describes as “not fanciful but not ordinary either,” adding: “There is quite a bit of inspiration that has come from the brilliant food pubs in London. It’s knowledgeable but not in your face.” Nearby sits David Kennedy’s River Café, where the chef uses what he describes as “French techniques with honest English ingredients”. Dishes on the menu include pan roast scallops with house cured bacon and artichoke puree. Another Fish Quay favourite is Irvin’s brasserie, which opened in an ex-trawlermen’s building in 2010. Further down the coast, Bistro Romano in Cleadon Village remains one of the region’s best kept secrets. Opened in 1999 by Romano and Paolo Minchella, it has built up a loyal local following. There’s an extensive pasta menu and a changing blackboard of seafood specials. And, of course, the food scene in Newcastle has changed pretty much beyond recognition in recent years. Double Michelin-starred Kenny Atkinson has opened his first venue, the House of Tides, on the Quayside after leaving Rockliffe Hall in Hurworth. His tasting menu features baby leeks from Ken Holland at Vallum Farm, Lindisfarne oysters and Craster fish pie. His opening follows hot on the heels of that of Dave Coulson, another Masterchef: The Professionals finalist, whose Peace & Loaf restaurant in Jesmond has quickly developed a reputation as one of the region’s finest eateries. His British menu changes with the

seasons but for spring, you can expect the likes of lamb loin or skate wing followed by homemade sorbet finished with Prosecco and popping candy. “Over the years, I’ve watched the North East food scene go from strength to strength,” says Dave. “And there is nowhere I’d rather have opened my restaurant than in this region. When I was in Masterchef: The Professionals, there were many chefs from down south who were unaware of how much the North East has grown in terms of gastronomy. I felt it my northern duty to put them straight! “I’m pleased to say we’ve moved forward positively in this region, with many chef’s like me using foraging skills as well their artisan flair to create some of the most desirable, tasty and unique dishes possible. When you’ve got excellent restaurants on your doorstep, like we have, there really is no need to travel far and wide to eat exceptionally well.”

Liz Hands talks to artist Tim Jago Morris over a full veggie breakfast at The Scrumpy Willow and Singing Kettle café

“SOME WORK I’VE MADE HAS BEEN COMPLETELY CRAZY,”

h

anging somewhere in the home of Alan Shearer is one of Tim Jago Morris’ paintings, specially commissioned as a gift for the former Newcastle and England player. “I was given some pictures of him on holiday that he’d sent to his friend,” says artist and glass blower Tim. “It was him on the beach with a beer in his hand, and he was joking ‘I wish I’d stuck in at school’. I painted that picture and then I did another one of that and a collage of all his favourite things. “I did a composition of horses galloping and a beautiful morning over the golf course. I loved that one but he went for the one on the beach. He loves it and that makes me happy. The greatest thing about making my work is having people enjoy it.” Another commission which stands out for Tim is that for a family who gave him the use of their pool house to paint in. “I did portraits of the whole family but the son-in-law wasn’t there so I painted him as a lion. I adored it because it was so funny. They wanted a unique piece of my artwork. That’s a very personal thing that happens because they acted as the input for my inspiration. I’m given the ingredients, I put it all together in my pot and out comes the finished piece. “I’d really recommend if anyone loves the arts, they should commission an artist because they’ll never get their own artwork in the same way by just going into a gallery and seeing

what’s already there. They’ll never get that same sense of ownership and delight which can last for generations.” Born in California in 1983, Tim came to the North East as a child when his father brought the family to South Shields, where he was working for a company which made circuit boards for mobile phones in the late 80s and early 90s. Tim spent part of his childhood in Northumberland before going to school in the Midlands and then art college in London. Moving back to the North East, Tim did a degree and a masters at Sunderland University and is in the process of setting up his studio in Darlington, having moved base from The Brickworks in Newcastle. Many of his artworks, however, will still hang in the Scrumpy Willow and The Singing Kettle café on Newcastle’s Clayton Street. Hanging above one table is a piece which sum’s up Tim’s style. “It’s called Nozah, which means beautiful journey,” he says. “That was painted in one day. The drawings for it were done in Casablanca but the painting was made here. It’s a combination of drawings, there are really four in one there.” Another painting hanging upstairs is of an African woman Tim asked to sketch while he was on the Metro. “That was a drawing I did travelling from Roker to central station, which turned into a painting. It was a dull day without much colour in the sky so I painted it in the colours of the Nigerian flag as that’s where she said she was from. I love colour so my inspiration is whatever can give me that satisfaction of using colour.” His love of colour is also evident in Tim’s glasswork. Bowls from his Heritage collection are pleasingly weighty creations made by melting together different shards of coloured glass. “I’ve had a whole year of making these, so that collection is finished now. There won’t be any more of these, so they will likely appreciate in value. I sign and date them and maybe one day they’ll be featured on the Antiques Roadshow as a family heirloom that someone loves and cherishes. “When making glass, there’s more of a science to it. With a painting, you can make mistakes and paint over it. But with a glass sculpture

or a bowl, you have to know the science behind how glass forms and what it likes, so there’s more of a technical expertise which, as I’ve got older, I’ve enjoyed.” Smaller bowls start from £25 while the large ones are around £140. Tim’s paintings, meanwhile start from around £45 for a 20cm square piece going up to around £550. “Some work I’ve made has been completely crazy,” he says. “I used to have a studio on Nun Street, above a shop which would sell the artwork for me. I was using any material I could. One day, I found a bit of wood that looked like a pig so I painted it pink and put wings on it. But the women in the shop thought it looked like a dragon, so it became a dragon piglet and that sold for a tenner. I made a 40cm square picture of lions dancing like those on the ace of a playing card and that sold for £20 and my work has gradually appreciated in value.” Work which stands out for Tim tends to be milestone pieces where he has moved onto a new technique for the first time or those pieces with a story about their purchase. “I did a painting of a piano player called Smooth Arrival,” he says. “It was bought by a young man who was getting married and he wanted to have something nice in his house, so he has the picture by his stairs. I know he’ll keep it and enjoy it for many years. “Another I did was of my fiancée having a cup of coffee. A man and a woman came into this café and she enjoyed that picture. She kept nudging him and asking him to buy it for her. All year went past and, at Christmas, he bought it for £150. One fond piece was a triangular block of plaster I did of a girl sleeping on her hand and that was bought by someone who gave it to her sister and it’s now in Lebanon. “There’s also one painting of a couple I did and they were embraced under a blossom. It was really big – 7ft tall and narrow. I decided not to sell it because it was too big for anyone to buy at a reasonable price. I gave it to a charity shop where a friend was working. It probably sold for a tenner so someone got a bargain. But, I like that. I like creating stories around my paintings.” Tim’s work is available from his website until he sets up his new studio. For now though, he’s getting ready for another milestone in his life. “I’m due to become a father in May,” he says, “so we’ll have to get ready to move all the glasswork at home.”

This will bring about some important changes in the mortgage industry which will affect everyone looking to take out a new mortgage or review existing arrangements.

t

he Banks and those that advise on mortgages will be asked to make more checks on both new and existing borrowers, to ensure that the financial commitment is affordable now and in the future. It is anticipated that the new rules will have a number of consequences:ADVICE – virtually all mortgages will be sold on an advised basis, this means that the largest financial commitment many of us will ever undertake will have built in protection to ensure that the mortgage product is correct for individual circumstances.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ON THE NEW REGULATIONS, OR WOULD SIMPLY LIKE A REVIEW OF YOUR CURRENT OR LIKELY MORTGAGE ARRANGEMENTS, PLEASE CALL US ON 0191 2843723 OR EMAIL PAUL.HARDINGHAM@ SANDERSONYOUNG.CO.UK

AFFORDABILITY – lenders will require more detail than in the past, 3 to 6 months bank statements will be scrutinised to establish that the new mortgage is affordable. STRESS TESTING – whilst interest rates remain at a historical low, lenders will assess the likely impact of future increases and how an individual borrower could cope with higher payments. INCOME PROOF – areas such as self-certification of income have been removed from the market. This could affect the self-employed and company shareholders who will be required to provide a greater level of paperwork than in the past. INTEREST ONLY – whilst still available, a realistic plan to repay the mortgage balance will be needed. As you would expect Banks, Building Societies and Mortgage Advisers have spent considerable time discussing the forthcoming changes and likely impact. Overall, I feel that the main effect will be

that more preparation is needed; waiting until you have found your dream house before considering mortgage options just won’t work. Forward planning is vital in the following areas:BANK STATEMENTS – these should show you in the best light as a potential borrower, areas such as unauthorised overdrafts, payday loans and even online gambling and other discretionary spending may be penalised. CREDIT FILES – these will become even more crucial, improving a credit score can usually be achieved with a few simple steps and precautions. SHOPPING AROUND – a major lender recently told me that an initial mortgage interview in their branches is likely to take 2 hours, as general opening hours are 9-5 weekdays and 9-midday on a Saturday, this is likely to have a significant impact and cause delays. In short, to shop around the various lenders could require a couple of day’s holiday! We have always believed that our customers deserve the best help and support when choosing a mortgage. When you are making what is probably the biggest financial commitment in your life, the skills and expertise of a financial adviser are important in reducing the risk of making the wrong decision. That’s why we have put quality advice and service at the heart of our business; we will endeavour to meet with you at a time and place convenient to you, out of office hours at your home or place of work if required.

Innovation Financial Management Limited trading as Sanderson Young Private Finance is an appointed representative of Personal Touch Financial Services Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate most buy to let mortgages YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE. Neil Gordon talks to Gail McLean, Sanderson Young’s

Regional Lettings Manager, about the current state of the residential rental market…

GAIL URGENTLY REQUIRES MORE QUALITY HOUSES AND APARTMENTS TO MEET GROWING DEMAND SO IF YOU HAVE A PROPERTY TO LET CALL HER DIRECT ON 0191 2233510 OR EMAIL: GAIL.MCLEAN@ SANDERSONYOUNG.CO.UK

“i

t’s undeniable that lettings and sales are linked,” says Gail. “When house sales are sluggish many homeowners opt to lease until the sales market recovers. Conversely, when sales are growing, and homeowners can sell easily, this can lead to a shortage of properties to rent. It seems as if we are at this point in the cycle at the moment.” Government statistics certainly back Gail’s analysis. A report issued by the Bank of England in January this year stated mortgage approvals had risen by 20% during 2013 so how is Gail and Sanderson Young coping with the changing landscape of the lettings market? “We’ve always seen demand for quality lets outstrip supply in the North East and with house sales buoyant we are experiencing an increased shortage of properties to let, especially at the higher end of the market,” says Gail. “Whilst this is not good news for tenants, it’s excellent news for landlords as robust demand is driving up rents. For example, in the last few weeks we’ve seen properties on Newcastle’s Quayside, which normally rent for around £795pcm, go for £895pcm.” Again, official statistics bear out Gail’s forecasts. Figures released

to the industry in March this year predict that rents will rise by between 1.5% and 3.7% throughout 2014. Of course, these figures represent national averages and the market in London is very different to that of Northumberland. “I’m glad you mentioned the north of our region, as we are really focusing our efforts on Alnwick and the north of the county this year,” says Gail. “For example we’ve just extended our Fully Managed Lettings Service to cover all of Northumberland. This means landlords can enjoy worry-free lets as we collect and guarantee their rents, take care of legal issues and organise the day-to-day running of the properties such as carrying out minor repairs and dealing with tenants’ complaints.” With Gail and her team offering to solve the inevitable problems that come with letting to private tenants, it seems that landlords with Sanderson Young can now let with confidence across the North East. So if homeowners are considering letting, can Gail point to any particular hot spots in the region, or property types, that are particularly popular? “We’re actually experiencing strong demand everywhere and it’s always the large, detached family homes that attract the greatest

I’m delighted to say that it was through our MD Duncan Young’s personal contacts that we secured this exciting commission and we confidently expect more clients of this calibre to follow!”

ALNWICK LETTINGS

Revival Regional lettings within Sanderson Young have been incredibly successful throughout the North East region over many years of trading, and with the surge of home sales continuing to gain momentum, now is the time to take stock. Properties in areas which are perhaps not selling as quickly as anticipated can benefit from our support and lead to another area of income in the form of a monthly rent. Central Newcastle and the surrounding suburbs continue to provide many agents with their bread & butter stock, which will never wain, providing homes of all styles and suiting all budgets. Sanderson Young Regional Lettings still hold on to the core of these areas as well as rural locations across the Tyne Valley, Northumberland & North Northumberland. The Alnwick region in particular has seen a great start to the year with home sales picking up pace and lettings now starting to gain momentum. New landlords are making initial enquiries to rent their own weekend boltholes around the coastal towns of Northumberland as well as locations in and around the Alnwick area. These tend to be on longer term tenancies which is great news for the crossover business that Sanderson Young are very successful at if perhaps a property is not moving as quickly as anticipated.

IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING TO SELL YOUR CURRENT HOME, YOU’RE A FIRST TIME LANDLORD OR JUST

At our Alnwick branch we can provide a fully comprehensive lettings service which is supported by Bethany Powell and of course the full back up of our qualified Regional Lettings office. the changes in the sector, New Homes Director Janet Hopkinson reflects on as well as exciting new horizons for the new bui ld market.

ashion, interiors, motoring, technology - trends are ever changing. This is very much the same with property and no more so than with the new build market. A new development not only has to attract one buyer as with a standard house sale, but sometimes hundreds. In an ever changing market, where we have transcended into a time of positivity, how have house builders focused on trends to increase their sales margins as well as appealing to their target purchasers? “WE HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY LUCKY TO “Heritage, tradition, and WORK WITH SOME OF THE REGION’S FINEST history” are definitely the buzz HOUSEBUILDERS, PRODUCING EXCLUSIVE words surrounding many DEVELOPMENTS WHICH HAVE BEEN DESIGNED new schemes at present. Homebuilders are starting to WITH THEIR SURROUNDINGS IN MIND. place an increased focus on the individual settings and surroundings of each site, which results in the creation of not just a housing scheme, but a community which, in its foundations, will stand the test of time due to its sympathetic design and build. Janet Hopkinson, Sanderson Young’s New Homes Director, is extremely encouraged by these changes in the new build environment. “We have been extremely lucky to work with some of the region’s finest housebuilders, producing exclusive developments which have been designed with their surroundings in mind. HALL GREEN MEADOWS I have been excited by the focus of developers on the

ethos and vision behind these schemes, and the time taken to consider the lifestyle element behind it.” “We are no longer seeing a mass produced build program, where often from one development to another you are able to see exactly the same blueprint design” notes Janet. “This standardised model, initiating in the 1960’s and 70’s, was in danger of returning when budgets were tight in a more difficult marketplace. For many developers, the main aim was to maximise profit in the shortest possible timescale due to falling house prices.” This market has now evidently picked up and the confidence in this sector is clear to see by the share price indices of major homebuilders. “We really do have some fantastic local and national scale developers in our offering, targeting different marketplaces and devising sites regionwide, from the major players Bellway and

Barratt, through to family companies including Cussins” comments Janet. “These developers are all creating one off schemes which place a huge importance on the locality, the history of the site and their target market.” La Sagesse, a stunning conversion by Barratt’s exclusive brand David Wilson Homes, in the grounds of the former convent school in Jesmond, fully embraces the site’s heritage. The scheme will offer 48 exquisite homes set within nine acres of impressive grounds, including conversion apartments, cottages and impressive executive houses; the perfect design mix to sympathetically improve local quality housing. Bellway’s Peel House has been a resounding success, occupying the site of the former corporate headquarters in the desirable village of Ponteland. Now fully finished, the range of new build and original conversion apartments blend seamlessly together in this private development set in a leafy gated community. Hall Green Meadows in West Boldon, a residential development created by construction giant Metnor, is in the heart of this conservation area and the heritage style of the build shines through. The site of The Limes, overlooking the picturesque market town of Alnwick, has been beautifully designed by Cussins Homes to showcase traditional Northumbrian architecture. Careful consideration has also been taken to ensure each individual plot fulfils its maximum potential, with many offering stunning elevated views of the famous Castle. One common theme running through these new developments is the use of premium, quality materials including stone and slate, solid oak and granite, along with state-of-the-art energy efficient build techniques. “A new build home of these standards really does offer the best of both worlds,” explains Janet. “ You reap the benefits of current standard heating and insulation, resulting in lower energy costs, whilst losing none of the style or character of a traditional property.” PEEL HOUSE This exciting period of growth in the sector is

also seeing the team at Sanderson Young further impart their knowledge on many upcoming developments due to launch in the near future, and Janet continues to build strong relationships with local developers. “The ability to start from scratch and have full input on the design through to completion of a project is always exciting, and we love to share our experience and expertise with house builders at every stage.” Janet and her team work with developers from initial pricing strategy, through to branding and marketing the scheme and offering important advice on how best to attract their particular target market. “Working with developers from the initial research and design stage enables us to really pass on our market knowledge. Our in-house media department also design and produce full marketing materials and we advise on showhomes for launches.” As a true advocate of new build homes, Janet really is best placed to head up this market leading division. She purchased her most recent property through Sanderson Young from new five years ago, after two self-build projects of her own. These fourteen individual properties, in a semi-rural location on the outskirts of Gosforth, have now become much more than that; a community feel is evident from the moment you drive through the stone pillared entrance. Bonfire parties, Christmas and New Year gatherings, Jubilee celebrations – not to mention birthday festivities – this tight knit bunch socialise, support and look out for each other. “As we all moved into our homes together, we instantly bonded over unpacking boxes and decorating living rooms, sharing cups of tea whilst comparing our kitchen choices”, says Janet. “It was a definite ice breaker and created a feel good factor, where we could all share in our excitement over our new homes.” “Every time we launch a development, I love to see the excitement shine through on our clients’ faces whilst filling in their reservation forms.” It is this passion and enthusiasm, not to mention in depth knowledge on the sector, which makes Sanderson Young New Homes Division such a roaring success and a true leader in its field. “I do believe that from the moment we take on a development, no matter whether we are on board from the first instance or are brought in at a later stage, we are dedicated to creating a community which will thrive for years to come.” A completely different environment is created as soon as a site sees its first occupants, which Janet sums up rather well: “It is not simply houses which are built; it is homes, communities and lifestyles.”

COST: £0.00 SAVING: AROUND £43 PER YEAR

Turning down the setting on your washing machine from 40°C to 30°C, using an indoor clothes line instead of a tumble dryer, using a bowl to wash up instead of a running tap and filling the kettle with only the water you need, can all cut over £40 from the average annual electricity bill.

SHOWERS

WINDOWS & RADIATORS

COST: £0.00 SAVING: AROUND £40

Believe it or not, just opening and closing your curtains can make a difference to your energy bills. Open your curtains and blinds during the day to let the sun heat the room naturally, then close them at night to stop heat escaping through the glass. Also, move furniture and curtains away from radiators to allow the hot air to circulate around the room more efficiently.

COST: £0.00 SAVING: UP TO £160 PER YEAR

By fitting water efficient shower heads, a family of four can cut £65 from gas or electricity bills and a further £95 from water bills if their house is fitted with a water meter. Many water companies are giving away these shower heads for free and they are usually very simple to fit. Just unscrew the old head and screw in the new one.

DOUBLE GLAZING

COST: VARIABLE DEPENDING ON STYLE SAVING: UP TO £120 PER YEAR

A typical three/four bedroom, detached house could save between £80 and £120 per year by replacing single glazed windows with double glazed units and even more if the new windows are fitted with energy efficient glass that reflect heat back into the room. For those put off by UPVC, or aluminium frames most companies now offer timber units suitable for period properties.

If your home was built after 1920, the chances are that its external walls will be made of two layers of brick with a gap between them. Whilst air can be a good insulator, modern specialist materials are much better at preventing heat loss through walls and the annual savings mean the cost of installing cavity wall insulation could be recovered in around four years.

APPLIANCES

COST: £0.00 SAVING: AROUND £45-£80 PER YEAR

The little red light on your TV, DVD player, phone chargers and other electrical appliances should be a warning that you are wasting money. When set to stand-by, electrical equipment still uses around 2% of its full power and over the year that is a lot of wasted watts so switch electrical items fully off and unplug chargers when not in use. The gadget minded can even invest in plug-in ‘smart sockets’ that turn off all appliances from a single remote control.

BOILERS

COST: £0.00 SAVING: BETWEEN £75-£150 PER YEAR

COMPARE SUPPLIER TARIFFS

COST: £0.00 SAVING: UP TO £450

You could be paying far too much for your energy so use a price comparison website to find the right tariff for your gas and electricity suppliers. The best sites will also arrange all the paperwork and technical details for you but check the small print for any charges and penalties. Turning down your boiler’s thermostat by just 1°C can cut a minimum of £75 per year for the average household and you won’t feel the difference if you simply wear a slightly thicker jumper! Similarly, check your hot water heater isn’t wasting energy. The optimum temperature for your hot water cylinder’s thermostat should be no more than 60°C.

With fuel bills increasing every year we examine some simple things ordinary people living in a typical three bedroom family home can do to cut their energy use and save money…

LIGHT BULBS

COST: £100 SAVING: £45 PER YEAR

ELIMINATE DRAUGHTS

COST: £100-£200 SAVING: £20-£30 PER YEAR

Fitting adhesive draught excluders to doors, letter boxes and windows, combined with filling gaps in skirting and floor boards with a silicone sealant, will not only make your house feel warm and cosy it can cut up to £30 per year from your heating bills. Draught excluding products suitable for most homes are available from all good DIY stores.

Turning off lights in unoccupied rooms costs nothing and will save money but you can go further by replacing old bulbs, including halogens, with the latest low energy light bulbs, LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) and CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps). Not only are these bulbs more energy efficient they should last a lot longer.

DURHAM DALES CENTRE CASTLE GARDENS, STANHOPE, COUNTY DURHAM, DL13 2FJ 01388 527650 WWW.DURHAMDALESCENTRE.CO.UK

Sitting at the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Durham Dales Centre offers a stunning shopping experience. Already home to a tea room and gift and craft shops, the centre is set for an exciting spring and summer season. New shops will be opening, including Fondant and Apron Strings, which provides bespoke wedding cakes, decorating supplies and classes, and Stylized for antiques, interiors and vintage. Work is also under way to improve the walled Dales Garden with a special celebration due to take place to mark the re-opening. “It’s a place to enjoy rural shopping at its best,” says a spokeswoman for the centre. “There’s a varied and unique range of shops selling original, local products and you can complete your trip with a visit to the tearoom to sample irresistible home baking.”

Lying on the edge of the Tyne Valley, Bradley Gardens was snapped from the open market by the directors of Bridgewater Interiors Darren Crichton-Jones and Mark Robinson who fell in love with it pretty much as soon as they stepped within its Victorian brick walls. Once the fruit and vegetable garden for the Bradley Hall estate, the gardens are remaining open while being transformed into an upmarket rural shopping hub where the striking Victorian glasshouse takes centre stage. The café is being given a beautiful Bridgewater-style makeover with classic Lloyd Loom furniture, while there will be a satellite home store showcasing the company’s furniture, lighting and home accessories. There will also be a kitchenware shop as well as clothing and a florist specialising in country-style blooms. Set to be finished in April, Bradley Gardens is due to become a year-round destination which will host special events, including concerts, supper clubs, seasonal courses and food festivals. “The gardens seem to have their own micro climate,” says Mark. “Even if it’s cold outside the walls, when you come in, because it’s south facing, it’s enclosed and there’s a gentle slope, it seems to keep the warmth in. It’s a beautiful spot to enjoy a chilled glass of wine or a coffee in the sunshine.”

íonra was the brainchild of Maurice Duffy, an Irishman himself and the CEO and founder of Blackswan – a global transformation consultancy based in the North East. He had a vision to create better business opportunities and connections between Ireland and the North East of England with leading local business people. The result was Líonra. Líonra sets the stage and brings together the players for business networking events and social interaction. Líonra strives for professional networking, providing opportunities for people and businesses with links to the North East of England and Ireland to engage and connect. It’s a simple formula; people join the network and start networking! Events run for members to meet, eat and talk about business experiences and opportunities. They can learn about the difficulties faced by businesses in the region and find out how they are being solved. Crucially, they can discover a world of professional wisdom from people who will take the time to share their experiences. On Saturday 15th March, Líonra held the Not to be Missed Shamrock Ball at The Hilton, Gateshead and donated all proceeds from the Shamrock Ball to their two main charities; Percy Hedley and the PSPA. Viscount Crichton was among those who attended to watch performances by the Baghdaddies, and Celtic Spirit who flew over from Ireland. Líonra’s main sponsors, Lloyd BMW, hosted a cracking Líonra Shamrock Ball Pre-Launch Party

at their Barrack Road showroom on the 18th of February. Over 100 Sponsors and partners in kind were present, including; Bang & Olufsen, Vattenfall, Courage Creative, The Crab & Lobster and Lagan Construction. A prize donated by Aer Lingus Regional for two flights on their new Cork route was presented, and food by Epicurus was enjoyed by all. View more pictures of the event at: https://www. facebook.com/LloydNewcastleBMW At the end of 2013, Líonra created the first ever ‘New Mindsets for New Times’ workshop, which took place in As You Like It, Newcastle. This was a huge success with a great turnout and amazing speakers with a wealth of experience on transformation and innovation. “The Líonra network is proving a refreshing oasis in attracting entrepreneurs, business leaders and research-active academics. The seminar ‘New Mindsets for New Times’ mirrored its members’ passion for innovation, business growth and academic underpinning. An exceptional evening and network.” -Derek Watson, Sunderland University “Líonra’s ‘New Mindsets for New Times’ event was enjoyable and productive. The blend of thought provoking content, challenging leaders and managers current mindsets with the opportunity to enjoy British Irish business networking and craic is a winning formula. Maurice described this formula as ‘edutainment’ – I agree, it’s great.” - John Crummie, Institute of Directors Líonra is now currently 2,000 members strong and is looking forward to a successful 2014 with plenty of new members to join the not-for-profit organisation. Battery power meets petrol power to make horsepower in the new

hen I was a child one of my favourite games was Top Trumps. The winning cards would always be based on horsepower, top speeds or 0-60 mph times. Fastforward 30 years and now the emphasis has changed to economy and lowest CO2 emissions. Another one of my fond memories was my uncle filling up his Jaguar XJ’s two petrol tanks! With the price of petrol showing no signs of coming down, more and more people are downsizing and buying more economical cars with many people predicting Super Cars would be a thing of the past. In recent years Hollywood stars made the Toyota Prius the must-have car and instead of being the laughing stock of society, the car went on to become quite cool. >>

Every manufacturer is jumping on the Hybrid or Electric bandwagon. From the all-electric Nissan Leaf to the BMW i3, these cars are fast becoming a sales success. With ever stricter European Legislation coming into force most car manufacturers have had to introduce cars that are not only economical but that are also kinder to the environment. Porsche have even introduced Diesel engines in their range, something which would have been unthinkable 30 years ago. Porsche have made some supercars like the 959 and the Carrera GT, both cars were technological tour du forces of their time. Fastforward a couple of decades and here is their latest masterpiece; the amazing 918. This Hybrid Supercar can’t be described as cheap with a starting price tag of £650k. A bespoke paint job will cost a cool £50k and the fitted luggage is another £15k! They are building 918 cars and I am sure the vast majority will go to China and the Middle East. The car is fitted with a 4.6lt V8 plus 3 electric motors that power the front and rear axles. The engine produces 608bhp and the electric motors add another 279bhp, with all of this power combined it’s really hard to explain just how fast this car really is! The battery packs and Hybrid technology add 314kg to the cars Ker weight. Without

the electric motor the 918 was five seconds slower round the Nürburgring. In Weissal Specification the 918 laps the Nürburgring in less than five minutes, which is no mean feat. Porsche’s engineers have done an amazing job, as you drive along and both petrol power is used the electric motors kick in and it’s totally seamless. For anyone interested in Weissal pack, it costs an extra £60k but for that, Porsche strip out 41kg of weight. Adding more carbon fiber, taking away soundproofing and adding Magnesium Alloy wheels does this. The car hits 60mph in 2.5 seconds and its top speed is 214mph. When driving at normal speeds the car still manages to return 25-30 mpg. Although the headline-grabbing figure of 94 mpg is actually only possible when the car is in Hybrid mode. In this mode the car will get to 62mph in 6.1 seconds and it will travel for 18 miles in electric power alone. The driver is faced with five drive modes - they are Edrive, Hybrid, Sport, Race and Hot Laps. As you may imagine in Edrive the driver is using the battery power alone. Hybrid allows the driver to use both power sources more efficiently. Using Sport mode the engine works constantly with the electric motors and they provide what can only be described as a boost function. The Race mode takes things a step further, with the battery level fluctuating it allows all the electric energy to be channeled to performance. Hot lap allows you to use all of the

batteries’ power for an ultimate boost over a couple of laps. The power this car has is simply staggering it’s the closest any driver will get to a F1 car. Despite its huge power this car is not intimidating at all. The electric power steering is excellent and it gives the driver excellent feedback. The car always feels beautifully balanced and Porsche’s engineers put this down to the rear wheel steering. At lower speeds the rear wheels turn the opposite direction to the front wheel, at high speeds turning the wheels in both axels the same direction. Most Hybrids suffer from a traditional feel brake pedal as most cars

k

struggle to blend traditional braking with the regenerative kind. Although it still has its flaws the braking is defiantly the best of the Hybrid cars. The car’s interior is still unmistakably a Porsche but the normal array of buttons has been replaced with a simple touch screen interface. The curved TFT screen and touchpad stereo/navigation console is intuitive and I am sure this design will filter its way down the range. As you sit in the car the exhaust pipes exit over the engine bay and behind the drivers head; you get to hear every pop, growl and roar from the engine. Taking the roof panels off and storing them in the front boot takes this symphony of sound to another level and it has to be heard to be believed. The car’s trump card is the headline grabbing economy figure but that aside this car is just a deeply impressive beast. Not only does it sound amazing but also it’s so easy to drive. You can literally drive in the city on electric power alone and you will not be emitting any exhaust gases at all. For supercars to survive, all manufacturers need to learn from this engineering marvel and if you have the cash get yourself to your Porsche garage. The moment you start and drive this car you need to have one in your life! pectacular new welcomes, and a scintillating new district – that’s the doubly compelling sunny-side-of-the-street future Newcastle is delivering for its city folk and visitors alike as the region’s capital banishes doldrums of recession. A once languishing area, bustling already with builders and their 60 foot cranes is being transformed into a new Stephenson Quarter. Folk are already following their noses to enjoy what’s going on. The sensitive redevelopment at a major historical site follows 10 years of negotiation over 10 acres where, from 1823 engineer Robert Stephenson, at 19, began building locomotives that would steam off to connect communities at home and abroad. By July next year the adapted workshops will be joined in the new Quarter by a four star Crowne Plaza hotel, conference centre and exhibition venue, also Rocket House bringing the city 35,000sq

ft of premium office space. And 150 apartments of one to three bedrooms to buy or rent will follow. Already by then the Quarter’s fronting neighbour, the Grade I Listed Central Station, will be showing off its £20m facelift marking its 150th anniversary and celebrating John Dobson, its famous Newcastle architect. A newly glazed portico entrance leading out to cafes and greenery will be “pedestrian friendly and fantastic, giving an instant impression of Newcastle as a cosmopolitan part of modern Europe,” says Sean Bullick, head of NE1, the business-led initiative helping to smarten the central area generally. Inside the station will be a new travel centre, twice the shopping, better lighting and signage, and improved facilities. NE1 is working with the City Council, East Coast and Network Rail on this. And Sean says Stephenson Quarter alongside will enhance the city’s appeal as an area of interest and a place to work.

DAVID CLOUSTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF SILVERLINK, SEES IT ALL AS “ONE OF NEWCASTLE’S LARGEST REGENERATIONS FOR MANY YEARS.” www.sandersonyoung.co.uk

The Bigg Market

NE1 has already enlivened the city centre generally – brightening streets, introducing open air cinema, a city centre “beach” and powerboat racing, developing a Quayside marina, and injecting life into Newcastle’s early evenings. Now its attention is turning to key areas neighbouring the other side of the station. Extensive tree planting and improved walkways will beautify the Bigg Market and The Gate leisure areas. And Percy Street will be made a prettier entry point for visiting shoppers, besides giving better access to the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Newcastle University. Public enthusiasm already towards Stephenson Quarter is delighting Silverlink, the developer driving its £200m transformation – given the responses to its experimental Boiler Shop Steamer social gatherings running in the former engine shed, now a social hub.

Silverlink director Michelle Percy says: “About 3,000 party minded people turn up on the first Friday and Saturday monthly to enjoy street food up to 16 vendors prepare – pulled pork, langoustine and such - with local beer, bands, dancers and theatricals accompanying. “They’re creating cultural heart within historic Listed buildings. Friday night draws office professionals. Saturday afternoons, families. Evenings, couples. It’s familiarising people with this new district - boding well for the future.” Silverlink will own the new hotel through Stephenson Hotel Ltd, with Michelle managing director. Intercontinental Group will run it day to day. Michelle says: “We’re planning regular events to absorb the Quarter into the city and show hotel guests lots is happening on the doorstep.” There were pleas for the long vacated railway buildings to be made a museum. But rail museums already exist at North Tyneside, Shildon, Darlington and York – hence the social hub purpose instead for an area once largely isolated by the main LondonEdinburgh railway lines. And, says Michelle, 21st Century innovation will appropriately succeed Stephenson’s 19th Century genius. Pods in the boiler shop provide workplaces for web and creative designers and IT specialists. Surviving small offices of the Grade II* Listed workplace (including Stephenson’s own office), can accommodate more of the same. “That’s surely an interesting new story around the heart of the Industrial Revolution,” Michelle suggests. It took four years from 2004 to consult with various bodies and secure planning approvals. Then came recession and bankers’ reticence. Silverlink triumphed by partnering instead Newcastle City Council, Royal Bank of Scotland, Aviva Investors, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, and Miller Construction. By 2019 Stephenson Quarter should be completed and complementing an existing nearby casino, a notable Indian restaurant and popular pub, also a recently completed Central Square office colony whose occupants include the giant business consultancy PwC. It will neighbour a new police headquarters, blend with other historic houses put to modern use, and should spur trade for little shops recently sprung up under railway arches there. David Clouston, managing director of Silverlink, sees it all as “one of Newcastle’s largest regenerations for many years.” And with NE1 recently backed by businesses and the city council to improve the city centre over another five years, it should be an attractive central Newcastle and Stephenson Quarter indeed that welcomes thousands of visitors to enjoy World Cup rugby union at St James’s Park next year.

CHARITY

Collection THE CHARITY

ALL Heart The confirmed line-up for one of the Children’s Heart Unit Fund’s (CHUF’s) best known fundraising events reads like a who’s who of the sporting and showbiz circuit. Taking place this year on May 19, the Have a Heart Trophy at Close House was launched by entrepreneur Graham Wylie after his daughter Kiera was saved by medics at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. This year, celebrities confirmed for the fourth Have a Heart event include Ant and Dec, Alan Shearer, golfer Lee Westwood, presenter Clare Balding, former England cricketer Sir Geoff Boycott, Football Focus presenter Dan Walker, James and Oliver Phelps, who are better known as the Weasley twins from Harry Potter, and TV host Jeremy Kyle. The event gives competitors the chance to win $1m or a Maserati if they manage to get a hole-in-one on the tricky Halfway house tee on the Lee Westwood Colt course.

CHILDREN’S HEART UNIT FUND

To enter a team of three, with each team playing with a celebrity, costs £1,200. Those not wishing to play golf, but who still want to get involved in the fundraising event, can attend the evening gala dinner at £5,000 for a table of 10, where they will be able to mingle with the celebrities. It’s just one of the events which CHUF’s new head of fundraising Chris Gray will be hoping brings much-needed money to allow the pioneering work at the Children’s Heart Unit to continue. “I am a local girl and the North East has taken the charity to their hearts,” she says. “I have close friends who have been touched by the unit and I know I can add valuable commitment to their long term goals. I will be concentrating on taking the fundraising to a new level.” Meanwhile, CHUF’s chair of fundraising Ivan Hollingsworth, says: “Despite a higher awareness than ever before, CHUF continues to require funding on a constant basis.”

HAPPY Birthday Designed as a home from home for cancer patients and their families, this summer marks an important milestone for Maggie’s Newcastle. Opened by former prime minister’s wife Sarah Brown, the Newcastle centre, at the Freeman Hospital, celebrates its first birthday in May. The centre is part of a national support network, created through the vision, and in memory of, Maggie Keswick Jencks, who died in 1995 after a breast cancer battle. She had been determined that people should not “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying”. A year later, the first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh and the Newcastle branch was the 16th to throw open its doors in 2013. Now, Maggie’s Newcastle is celebrating its first year of providing emotional and social support to cancer patients with a party and a special fundraising event.

MAGGIE’S NEWCASTLE

A 4km family fun walk is taking place on April 26th at Northumberlandia, the reclining Lady of the North sculpture, near Cramlington. “It’s a fitting choice of location,” says Kelly Knighting-Wykes, the centre fundraising manager at Newcastle, “as it was designed by Maggie’s husband Charles Jencks. “The event will have a real family feel and you can register as a family or an individual. There’s no minimum sponsorship, but we’re encouraging people to do it as a sponsored walk. “It will be the first one of what we hope will become a popular annual event.” It’s just part of the fundraising programme at Maggie’s which, this year, also includes a challenge to travel between Maggie’s centres around the UK and a Skydive for Maggie’s. Registering for the Northumberlandia walk costs £6 for an individual or £20 for a family.
