COLLECTION

A VERY WARM WELCOME TO WHAT I HOPE WILL BE A LOVELY SPRING AND SUMMER IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND.

COLLECTION MAGAZINE IS ALWAYS WARMLY RECEIVED, ESPECIALLY OVER THE SUMMER PERIOD WHEN SO MANY FABULOUS HOMES ARE TRADITIONALLY SOLD. the first three months of 2016 remind me of the activity we used to experience in 2006, prior to the recession that came around in 2007. We have seen an extremely strong start to the year, with some excellent buyers and a number of sales proceeding very quickly. The market demand in popular areas of the region, for properties priced under £500,000, is exceeding supply and this is pushing prices up. As the values rise, demand falls away but we are still able to see some good sales up to, and in excess of, £1 million for quality homes. I am particularly encouraged by the high levels of enquiries we are receiving from out of the region, with a record number of buyers coming up to the North East, for what I suspect is a much better quality of life. The London impact, with people selling two bedroom flats at over £1 million, is creating a significant opportunity for investing in the north of England, where buyers have such easy access to the beaches and the hills within an hour’s drive. In this period of digital change, the need for a ‘personal estate agent’ is increasingly important. The increase of internet estate agencies and firms with low cost fee structures entices prospective sellers to use what are perceived to be cheaper options. The reality is an old phrase, which always comes to mind, “you get what you pay for”. We have seen an increasing number of sales fall apart and last minute changes take place when the client has not been advised correctly and when inexperienced and shoddy estate agency principles have led to poor performance. In Sanderson Young we ensure that the maturity of our team and the vast experience of our years in estate agency protect our clients and prevent this I AM PARTICULARLY ENCOURAGED BY THE happening. We are particularly proud of the HIGH LEVELS OF ENQUIRIES WE ARE RECEIVING excellent reputation we have built up in the FROM OUT OF THE REGION, WITH A RECORD north of England for repeat and referred NUMBER OF BUYERS COMING UP TO THE business, due to the integrity of our team and the support to those clients and buyers NORTH EAST, FOR WHAT I SUSPECT IS A MUCH that we introduce. The company mission statement is to

exceed the expectations of our clients. We know that many of the buyers and sellers using our company do so because they expect high standards, strong trustworthiness and a proven performance of success. Our ongoing investment in new media and digital technology is proving a huge success. We are introducing many more buyers than we have ever done so before, via our website and other media connections. Our lettings team continues to have great success and we have seen some superb mansions and family homes being let for 6-12 months, with excellent corporate client contracts. The new homes section of the business is also thriving. I am delighted to see such huge investments by local companies in tremendous sites being so successful. In particular the La Sagesse site in Jesmond, the soon to be launched Urban Splash development in North Shields at Smiths Dock and the ongoing success of energy efficient sites in Hexham, as well as leading locations at Mill Rise in Ponteland outperforming every expectation. Sanderson Young has a proven team of specialists who can seek out land and help our developer clients build what the public want, in excellent locations and at the right price level. The need for a personal estate agent continues to be 100% the aim and priority of our company. We look to provide one-to-one advice and guidance, ensuring that we can exceed the expectations of our clients in everything that we do. If you are thinking of buying, selling or letting a property, or developing a site for new homes, please do not hesitate to contact myself and my team. We will be delighted to help you.

JOIN OUR TEAM The North East’s residential housing market has seen an upsurge in activity since the start of the year and as the foremost property agents and consultants in the region, Sanderson Young are receiving an ever increasing number of enquiries from home buyers, sellers, investors and developers. As a consequence of this rapid growth in interest, we are now actively seeking excellent sales negotiators who can make a valuable contribution to our ongoing success. Our offices in Gosforth, Ponteland and Alnwick handle all types of property, from luxury modern apartments to period family homes, and in each location the successful candidates will be expected to work hard to promote the very best in residential accommodation. Such high profile positions require talented individuals, who must be highly motivated, enthusiastic and presentable, with first class communication skills and a passion for customer

service, but the right person will find the rewards considerable for being part of the Sanderson Young team. Most of the positions we have available are full time and whilst no specific experience in real estate is required (any relevant training will be provided) some measure of achievement in sales would be a distinct advantage. So if you think you have something to offer the best known name in North East property, please contact me by email, attaching your CV: janet.hopkinson@sandersonyoung.co.uk

THE NEW NAMES IN NEW BUILD The changes to stamp duty on sales of buy-to-let and second homes, which became effective on April 1st 2016, are designed to bring the market for owner-occupied properties more into focus but what does this mean for the North East? Of course, any changes in the tax regime are bound to have an impact in the short term but we expect the investment market in our region to remain attractive for those seeking long term returns. In recent months, we’ve seen a strengthening of interest from private investors, fund managers and property developers, especially those based in other parts of the UK, looking to put their money, and their faith, in sites across the North East. Urban Splash, for example, has an impressive reputation for regenerating some of the most run down inner-city areas. Their innovative use of branding and marketing, combined with groundbreaking designs, transform derelict buildings into the hottest properties in town and their new Smith’s Dock development in North Shields promises to be just as popular.

Another new name in the North East is the award winning Linden Homes whose Mill Rise, St George and Trilogy developments in Ponteland, Morpeth and Saltwell respectively are attracting lots of attention. Again it’s the combination of excellent design and quality build that’s driving interest in these sites and, in a marked change from previous years, we’re seeing more and more properties bought off-plan. Buying early is the best way to avoid missing out on some of the most attractive new homes on the market so the growth of such sales is a very promising indicator.

HINTS OF SPRING ARE IN THE AIR - FROM THE LEAVES THAT ARE SPROUTING IN MY GARDEN, TO THE LIGHTER EVENINGS - THE BOUNCE IN MY STEP IS BACK AND GETTING ‘SUMMER READY’ IS ON IN FULL THROTTLE!

Weeks predicted wild brights, metallics, graphic stripes, bold patterns and a retro edge for Spring Summer 2016. The runways were all about expressing one’s quirkiness even if that meant pairing a feminine pleated skirt with a pair of trainers. Prim lace tea dresses and pageboy blouses on the catwalk suddenly made it acceptable to raid your granny’s attic. Genderless fashion became the new norm and individualism was celebrated. Being a little kooky was okay too. However, buyers are no longer dictated to by the Fashion Weeks alone. I recently met Sally Heale who is a buyer at Liberty, London and she stressed the influence social media and fashion bloggers wield on style predictions and ranges. Staying abreast requires a daily plunge into the pool and not just the occasional dip. In order to deliver consistently the buyers have to be feeling the fashion pulse and seeking inspiration everywhere. Having just returned from LFW I am feeling feverishly inspired to seek out the new trends and rid myself of anything in my wardrobe that does not make me feel front row worthy. Fortunately, that no longer interprets as a high-gloss, overtly sexy and high maintenance look. However, as I do away with the old in my quest to make room for the new, trips to the high street become mandatory. It is a happy chance that Fenwick in Newcastle are making every effort to ensure the latest trends and style predictions are within easy access of the Northern shopper. Having seen a major overhaul and boost in its efforts throughout all departments, the Ladies Wear team has also made a foray to prove its fashionability. This is reflected in the inclusion of diffusion labels by fashion moguls like Victoria Beckham, MSGM and Alexander McQueen. The Vintage Chanel and Louis Vuitton handbag and accessory range are very attractive additions to the shop floor. >>

<< Head of Womenswear, Catherine Newton’s, new range covers some of the key fashion trends for Spring Summer 2016. Namely: Luxe sports - in the shape of bomber jackets and oversized sweatshirts by McQueen and Sportsmax. Vibrant vintage retro - ranges by “Pleats Please” by Issey Miyake and “Victoria” by Victoria Beckham inject vibrancy with their high octane colours and a bold mix of prints and patterns. An inclusion of jumpsuits like the ‘floral satin cloque jumpsuit’ by MSGM help channel this trend further. The latest addition of the label “Self Portrait” with its pageboy collared dresses and use of crochet, lace and ruffles complete the look. Feminine grace - this is a trend perfect for summer weddings and garden parties. The aqua blue, belted and cinched at the waist flared dress by Maxmara Studio or the Self Portrait lace prom dress available in mint green, blush pink and yellow are delightfully pretty options. Metallics - this is a polished, body-conscious look that is going to carry through to the Autumn Winter too. The silver metallic skirt by DKNY paired with the Kenzo sweatshirt is a just the right amount of edgy styling. Also available are the maxi metallic twill skirt and midi metallic shirt dress by Joseph. Fenwick’s new collection reflects Catherine Newton and her team have been keeping their ears to the ground and translating the looks on the runway to suit their client base in the real world. The Spring Summer photoshoot is fresh, on trend and identifiable. It has stepped away from the wrapped-up winter style to the bright and springiness of summer! I, for one, cannot wait to pair the Self Portrait lace prom dress with a bomber jacket and trainers because the one trend that outshines them all this season is celebrating your own special uniqueness.

BUILDING WORKS: THE PITFALLS FOR MANY

of us our house isn’t only our home but our largest single asset. In order to improve, repair or maintain our properties we engage professionals such as surveyors, engineers and architects to assist us and contractors to undertake the works. The majority of the time the works will proceed with only a few minor snags here and there, but what if something more serious goes wrong? Disputes during and after building works can come about in a number of ways, but the most common are where the property owner believes:

IF YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A DISPUTE WITH A BUILDER OR YOU THINK A DISAGREEMENT MAY ARISE, PLEASE CONTACT JAN RZEDZIAN, SPECIALIST CONSTRUCTION SOLICITOR AT HAY & KILNER. CALL: 0191 232 8345 EMAIL: JAN.RZEDZIAN@ HAY-KILNER.CO.UK 16 | Collection

• the work was not of sufficient quality; • the work was not completed; or • the work took too long to complete.

Whether you are aware of it or not, paying for these services and works creates a contract between you and the contractor, surveyor, engineer or architect. Sometimes the contract or appointment is created by way of a formal written standard form document. More often than not, however, the contract is entirely verbal or based around a simple quotation or estimate. As a matter of common sense your first recourse should be a reasonable effort to resolve the dispute on an amicable basis by discussing the issue with the person or business in question. In the majority of cases this will result in a conclusion that is satisfactory to both sides. In rarer instances the parties may not be able to come to an agreement in which case it may be necessary to explore your legal rights under the contract. If your contract was a standard form contract then you may have express rights and remedies under that contract. Even if your contract was entirely verbal you will still have a number of implied rights and remedies set out by legislation. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 came into force on 1 October 2015 and any contract

you enter into as a consumer will be regulated by that Act. For contracts formed before that date you will still have a number of rights but they will be scattered across a number of older Acts in place at the time. As a supply of a service, whether with or without goods, the work undertaken by a construction professional or contractor must adhere to the following:

• The professional or contractor must perform the service with reasonable care and skill; • Information which is said or written is binding where you rely upon it; • Where the price is not agreed beforehand, the service must be provided for a reasonable sum; and • The service must be carried out in a reasonable time.

If the service provided doesn’t satisfy the above criteria you’re entitled to rectification of the element of the service which is inadequate or performance of the whole service again at no extra cost to you, within a reasonable time and without causing significant inconvenience. Or, where that is not possible, you’re eligible to a price reduction. You may also be entitled to challenge hidden fees and charges as the Consumer Rights Act 2015 ensures that key terms of a contract, including price, may be assessed for fairness unless they are both prominent and transparent. Terms may be considered to be unfair if they are contrary to the requirements of good faith or they cause a significant imbalance between your rights and the rights of the contractor or professional. Contractors and professionals must also comply with the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 when they sell goods or services away from their business premises such as in your home or your place of work. If your contract was formed ‘off premises’, then you may have additional rights to explore.

Let’s begin our tour with the magnificent dining-kitchen, designed by Herrington Gate. The original space at the rear of the property has been extended to provide lots of natural light and a view of the garden whilst the food preparation areas have been fitted with an impressive array of walnut cabinets, marble worktops and state of the art appliances by Mercury and Sub-zero. Whether dining with friends or with the family, this glorious kitchen will turn any meal into an occasion but for those extra special dinner parties this sumptuous home also boasts a separate dining room. Once again this beautifully proportioned room retains several original features, the ceiling cornicing and fireplace, but the plantation shutters, wood floor and coal-effect fire are the height of modernity. >>

Large windows overlooking the garden make this room feel light and airy whilst the contrasting warm shades and white tones of the colour scheme pick out the period details perfectly. Also on the ground floor is a fourth reception room, which could serve equally well as a playroom for the children or a second sitting room for the grown-ups, and a cosy study. has always been at the forefront of industry but today’s Stephensons and Armstrongs are more likely to be building world class software and mobile phone apps than railway engines or steamships, and if you don’t believe me take a look at Hoults Yard in Newcastle. Located just off Walker Rd, the site was once home to the famous Maling pottery but over the years these ten acres of Victorian buildings have been transformed into a crucible of creative space by the Hoult family. “My father, grandfather and great-grandfather’s background was in haulage and logistics but I spent several years in London studying journalism and running my own IT company before moving back to the North East,” says Charlie who is the fourth generation of Hoult to run Hoults Yard. “From starting the first motorised delivery service to London to transforming Hoults Yard into a vibrant business centre, my family have always been innovators and I wanted to continue that tradition by being a different type of commercial landlord. For me, real estate is much more than bricks and mortar, its showmanship,” he says. This may sound like an odd statement from someone who built his own branding agency into a global business with 400 employees and an annual turnover of £50 million but even a cursory glance at the Hoults Yard programme reveals a radical departure from the commercial property norm. Whether it’s the pop-up restaurants providing food for tenants, the regular live music performances, the football fan zones during the last World Cup or the graffiti art adorning the gable ends of different

In keeping with his strategy, Hoults Yard now offers a huge variety of workshop and office space. Tenants also have access to communal meeting rooms and the new reception area, the £5 million Maling Exchange, creates a professional ‘shopfront’ for all the businesses on the site. Moreover, Charlie’s commitment to providing his tenants with every opportunity to make a success of their own ventures goes beyond offering hi-tech data storage and versatile work areas. Besides his unique business park, Charlie Hoult is one of the driving forces behind Dynamo, a partnership of North East businessmen and university academics dedicated to growing the IT and creative sectors in our region. Dynamo has been instrumental in championing local success for Eutechnyx and Ubisoft as well as the creation of a new UTC school. He’s also a serial ‘dragon’ who invests in a variety of start-up companies. “I and some like-minded individuals want to support people in their late thirties and forties who’ve built up years of experience working for large companies but who want to set up on their own. To this end, Mike O’Brien and I have invested in Opencast Software whilst Joel Marks, John Baty and myself have backed Cheviot Insured. Hoults Yard can offer companies like this ready-to-use space so they don’t need to worry about irritating details like installing phones,” he says. As a fifty something myself, this is a wonderfully refreshing statement. All too often the abilities of more mature people are overlooked in the drive to attract youth but at Hoults Yard all that matters is that you have a good idea and the drive to make it work.

buildings the pervasive atmosphere at Hoults Yard is one of creativity and innovation. “Nowadays all people need is a smart phone and they can work anywhere in the world so business parks have to cater for these changes in the way people work and that’s what we’re trying to do at Hoults Yard,” says Charlie and he explains that he bases much of his highly successful business philosophy on a book called The Rise of the Creative Class (And How it’s Transforming Work, Leisure, Community, and Everyday Life) by Richard Florida. This influential book, which is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of our cities, describes how derelict 19th Century buildings often follow the same pattern of use after their original purpose has become redundant. At first abandoned mills and factories are occupied by the squatters, musicians and artists at the bottom of the creative pyramid; this revitalises not just the buildings but the areas surrounding them and such regeneration eventually results in the squats being converted into trendy flats or offices for the higher income members of the creative class. Inspired by this template, Charlie has set about turning Hoults Yard into a ‘creative village’ where artists, musicians and craft people can rub shoulders with software engineers, IT specialists and app designers. “I saw how this symbiosis worked in places like London’s Shoreditch and Copenhagen’s Christiania and I felt sure its success could be replicated in Newcastle. Many people said I was mad but I knew I was building on the solid foundations laid by my father. During the 80s and 90s we had Tyne Tees Television as a neighbour so a number of ancillary companies

GOT TO BE

SORRY, TERRIBLE I KNOW, BUT AS WE GO TO PRINT WITH A UK IN / OUT VOTE LOOMING, INDEPENDENT MORTGAGE ADVISERS ARE ALSO DEALING WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SNAPPILY TITLED “EU MORTGAGE CREDIT DIRECTIVE” OR MCD.

this will bring a number of changes, one of which will mean that use of the word “Independent” will no longer be possible to describe our services. So what’s changed with regards to our advice for a standard mortgage? Nothing whatsoever, but as we have elected to refer any second charge mortgage enquiries to a specialist company we will not advise in this area directly and are therefore no longer considered “independent”. I am a great believer in specialisms, this is why we have made the decision to continue to concentrate on first charge mortgage advice “in house”, but engage with experts in other areas such as second charge mortgages in a similar way to how we have operated in conjunction with pension and investment experts for a number of years. Overall, I am not too concerned by the loss of the word independent as long as the media get the message across to the public that they should move away from just asking “are you independent”; many other things are more relevant. Primarily those seeking mortgage advice should be asking:-

These are key areas which will influence the quality of advice / service received and where an expert adviser will concentrate their efforts. There are many areas where we can assist, including:-

1 – what experience do you have? 2 – do you work with lenders across the market? 3 – do you provide detailed advice or just offer the cheapest product regardless of availability? 4 – do you offer an end to end service and deal with the paperwork to make the whole mortgage process that much easier?

Around 70% of business was people who had either experienced our service and wanted to work with us again or had received a recommendation; I think this is a ringing endorsement of the quality advice and service proposition which my team can offer and something we are all very proud of here at Sanderson Young Private Finance.

IN SHORT

RUNNING YOUR

OWN BUSINESS

IS HARD WORK BUT IT CAN OFFER THE FLEXIBLE HOURS & MUCH NEEDED EXTRA INCOME THAT ALL FAMILIES NEED. WITH WORKING FOR YOURSELF BECOMING INCREASINGLY POPULAR, WE ASKED FOUR BUSY MUMS HOW THEY MANAGE TO RUN A HOME AND THEIR OWN BUSINESSES…

LAURA RUTHERFORD SWEETIE HOME & ARBONNE

26 | Collection

I used to work in film and television, where the hours were very long, but after the birth of my eldest daughter I needed something better suited to family life. I therefore started sweetiehome.co.uk, which is an online retail business selling quality mother and baby products, because I wanted to share my personal experiences of what worked best during and after pregnancy. A lot of my suppliers are other small businesses run by ‘mum-preneurs’, and the personal endorsement formula has proved very popular, but I found myself spending a lot of time behind my laptop so I started looking for something more sociable I could run alongside Sweetie Home. Eventually I found a Swiss company, Arbonne, offering botanically based skincare, nutrition and cosmetic products which complement the natural and organic items I sell through Sweetie Home very nicely. Arbonne uses the networking marketing model, where independent consultants sell products at small social events, and I like to bring the personal recommendation element that’s worked so well with Sweetie Home to my Arbonne customers. I try all the products personally and give demonstrations then I let people take away a free selection of items to try for themselves. This is so much better than going to a big store as you can be certain that the product is right for you before you buy. There’s no doubt that running two businesses is hard work but there are lots of rewards, and not just financial. Sweetie Home is very creative because I get to choose everything I sell whilst Arbonne allows me to be part of a larger social network. Besides sales, I earn commission by building up a team and I get a tremendous feeling of satisfaction knowing I’m helping other women start their own business. The Sweetie Home website has recently been relaunched but the web address is still www.sweetiehome.co.uk and if you would like to know more about Arbonne contact Laura via her other website www.laurarutherford.arbonne.com

My first foray into art was a portrait of my daughter and, whilst I still accept commissions for portraits, printmaking is something everyone can do on the kitchen table… KATE MILLER

KATE MILLER ARTIST & PRINTMAKER

My background is in art history, and I worked as a picture researcher before my children were born, but once I’d started a family I took a few years off. When it was time to go back to work, I managed to get a job with a photographer but I also wanted to do something for myself. My first foray into art was a portrait of my daughter and, whilst I still accept commissions for portraits, printmaking is something everyone can do on the kitchen table, I know because that’s how I started! At its most basic level printmaking is a very simple process, no different from the potato prints we all made at school. You need very few materials, and I had no formal training, but the possibilities are endless. I started producing purely decorative prints of local scenes, which are always very popular with people in the North East, and then I progressed to other products such as cards and coasters. A lot of my output is sold online through my personal website and Etsy but I also sell through small arts fairs, local galleries and gift shops. For me the hardest part of my business is approaching retailers and asking them to stock my work but perseverance does pay off. For example, it took me six months but the National Trust have recently agreed to stock my prints of Hadrian’s Wall and Lindisfarne. Building any arts business does take time but I’ve had tremendous help and support from Northern Print. They’re very friendly, and have fantastic facilities, so I’d recommend other mums thinking of taking up printmaking to visit their studios in Ouseburn. Other than that, I’d advise anyone with an interest in starting an arts and crafts business to just go for it. Juggling work and family is never easy but the thrill I get each time I peel back the paper from the block makes it all worthwhile! To buy Kate’s prints and cards, or to commission a portrait, please contact her through her website www.bykatemiller.com or www.etsy.com and there’s more information about Northern Print at www.northernprint.org.uk

I left my job in IT to start a family but as my son got older I wanted to go back to work. Having been out of IT for several years that door was closed to me, and I didn’t have a lot of money to start my own business, but a friend introduced me to the ‘social selling’ jewellery company Stella & Dot. As one of Stella & Dot’s independent stylists, I work for myself by holding ‘trunk shows’ in people’s homes and other places. Everything is very informal and what attracted me was the incredibly low start-up cost. For £169 I got a ‘business-in-a-box’ and I didn’t need to buy lots of stock, just a few samples for people to examine, then customers choose what they want from catalogues or online. This also means that my business is very portable so I take it everywhere, even on holiday! There are four collections every year, so there’s always something new, and commission rates vary from 25%-35% depending on how much I sell. There are also incentives, starting with free jewellery for both the stylists and those who host a trunk show, and excellent opportunities to grow the business by building a team. I started three years ago and my team now has 28 stylists, who all work for themselves, but who I support with regular monthly meetings. We also have lots of help from head office with online training sessions. There is a down side, if I don’t work I don’t earn, but the flexibility is exactly what I need. There are no targets, I work as much or as little as I want, but with each of my trunk shows turning over between £800 and £1,000 I now earn enough money to be independent without being tied to the 9-5. Katie would be delighted to talk to anyone interested in joining Stella & Dot contact her on 07748 307146 or take a look at her website www.stelladot.co.uk/ katiejoynson

Juggling a busy catering business in beautiful rural Northumberland with my life as a farmer’s wife and mother of teenage boys, is a surprisingly good fit. Not having to be at a desk from 9 to 5 allows me the flexibility to manage my time around family, farm and my food enterprise Having grown up in this area, where I still live on the family farm, I am passionate and proud about supporting it. There are a wonderful range of local ingredients to use in my menus, from the freshest oysters to specialist cheeses. And, of course, our own beef and lamb feature in my dishes. I always wanted to be a caterer. The only formal training I’ve had was a Cordon Bleu cookery course, so I was careful to grow the business slowly, relying on word of mouth. Now I am busier than ever. I still find personal recommendations are the best form of advertising for a business like mine, but we are about to launch a new website. Naturally, having the right help is vital and though I don’t employ staff full time I do have a group of highly skilled people I can call on for events. For large weddings and occasions, I join forces with fellow caterer and close friend Fiona Burn so we provide a luxurious, memorable occasion, no matter how many guests. There is no typical day, I might be menu planning, meeting clients or making 500 canapes. After 25 years I can certainly say that combining a family with running a business is sometimes very hard work, but it is extremely rewarding. Susan Comber Catering specialises in weddings, corporate events, sporting lunches and special occasions. For more information contact Susan on 01668 213242 or go to www.susancombercatering.co.uk

OPPORTUNITIES TO ENJOY LIFE IN LATER YEARS ARE GROWING AS STANDARDS AND PROVISIONS OF CARE AND ATTRACTIVE OPTIONS OF ACCOMMODATION MAKE THEIR IMPACT. BRIAN NICHOLLS EXPLAINS

a bowling green, croquet lawn and live glimpses galore of the thrilling sport of kings… such attractions paint a remarkable contrast indeed to those sad occasional stories we read and hear about some care homes that bring shame and anger. So yes, there certainly are very good care homes and other assisted accommodation that do provide happy living in later years. Excellent facilities are found at Gosforth and Jesmond in Newcastle, for example. Ian Watson, chairman of Hadrian Healthcare Group, says tighter regulation from statutory bodies has played a part in improving care standards. But he adds: “I believe competition to attract an increasingly discerning client profile has played an even more important role. Elderly clients and their families rightly have increased expectations of what they require from their care provider.” Hadrian’s Manor House at Brunton Park, Gosforth, has provided for elderly clients since 1995. Its ground floor Park suite gives many their own private front door and patio garden. It has a dining bistro and café, village shop, library, garden lounge and internet corner. Also to hand: a hairdressing and beauty salon, a residents’ bar, a cinema and wellness/physiotherapy suite. All residents have private suites with fitted furniture, a fridge and bathroom. The gardens

include water features and a pergola, and residents can also play bowls and croquet. Besides trained care staff, qualified catering staff provide homemade cuisine - wine with meals an option. A ‘life-style co-ordinator’ leads many activity options, indoors and out. Amenities nearby include a post office, shops, a health centre, St Aidan’s Church, a community centre and local travel links, so residents can remain part of general community life. Gosforth High Street and Newcastle Racecourse are a few minutes’ ride away. The Park and Brandling suites, giving private accommodation within ‘small living groups’, are designed for elderly clients with dementia. Trained staff, available 24 hours daily, meet these residents’ needs. Their accommodation is similarly homely and in a domestic environment. Opened in January, Melton House at Melton Park, Gosforth, gives views directly across the greenery of Newcastle Racecourse and Northumberland Golf Course. Owned and operated by the Prestwick Care Group - part of Malhotra Group plc – it’s only three miles north of Newcastle’s city centre. This three-floor 67 bed care home with single en suite bedrooms meets residential, general nursing, dementia and dementia nursing needs, accentuating individual privacy and dignity. >>

Each bedroom is en-suite, with specialist bed, bespoke fitted furniture, emergency call system and convenient lighting. There are specialist bathing facilities, in-house physiotherapy, laundry service and a hairdressing salon. The large Premier bedrooms look across the racecourse to the grandstand packed on race days. Residents and their families and friends avail of open areas on each floor, also the landscaped garden with wheelchair access and seating areas. An enclosed rooftop garden looks over the racecourse and the golf course. There are activity and games rooms, and quiet rooms for reading and relaxation. The home’s activity programmes contribute to an overall holistic approach to care. The interior design of Melton House was inspired by work with Stirling University, which specialises in studies of social care and dementia. Bunty Malhotra, director of care and chief executive officer of Malhotra Group, says: “We at Prestwick Care are extremely proud to deliver Melton House, our 11th home in the area and first in a platinum range. Four more homes are planned over the next two years. Beautiful surroundings here make Melton House most attractive.” Elsewhere in Gosforth, McCarthy & Stone, leading developers of privately owned retirement property, are now releasing for sale one and two bedroom retirement apartments at “THE CONTINUING RISE IN OUR AGEING Kenton Lodge. wardrobes and a level access shower. Friends and neighbours can be entertained in the Homeowners’ Lounge. Freshly cooked lunches will be available daily in the table service restaurant, while landscaped gardens will offer sunny summer relaxation. Besides new build, Kenton Lodge incorporates the original 107-year-old building with its grand staircase, ornate fireplaces and decorative ceilings - all restored. Service charge includes an hour’s domestic help weekly, and services also on offer include house cleaning and grocery shopping. Flexible care packages come at extra charge, and can be tailored to individual needs. An estate manager ensures smooth running there, and over 24 hours, 365 days a year there’s staffing and on site security. Permit parking is subject to availability. Almost half the apartments have already been snapped up. In another well connected area of Newcastle, a new Helen McArdle Care Home opens this autumn at Burdon Terrace, Jesmond. It’s a 63 bed home with penthouse rooms. And it’s convenient for Clayton Road shops. Transport links to the city centre and the coast are excellent too. Facilities will include a restaurant, cinema, café, beauty salon, bowling green and sensory garden. Rachel Todd, marketing manager for McArdle Care Homes, says: “The bedrooms are variously styled and designed to suit every need or preference, including the penthouse rooms. As with all Helen McArdle Care Homes a friendly, small group living philosophy will prevail, giving home from home atmosphere, and 24 hour care.” Ian Watson at Hadrian believes: “The continuing rise in our ageing population creates a need for increased provision of quality accommodation and care in a whole mixed economy of elderly care provision. That means sheltered accommodation, assisted living, care homes and domiciliary care. Emphasis throughout will be on quality.”

it will be New Zealand’s’ turn to host The Lions so for the first time in more than a decade, the best of British and Irish rugby will take on the mighty All Blacks. As in other sports, passions will run high but few events can match the extraordinarily friendly atmosphere of a Lions’ Tour. Fans of all ages mingle on the terraces and domestic rivalries are forgotten as Welsh, Scots, English and Irish fans are welded together in the white-hot heat of the world’s best rugby. Moreover, rugby in New Zealand is less of a sport and more of a religion and the Kiwis are always happy to welcome fellow believers. Everywhere Lions fans go they’ll find the welcome warm and the beer ice cold but whether you’re planning to make the trip or follow the games on TV you’ll need our definitive guide to watching The Lions in the Land of the Long White Cloud…

IT WILL BE NEW ZEALAND’S’ TURN TO HOST THE LIONS SO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MORE THAN A DECADE, THE BEST OF BRITISH AND IRISH RUGBY WILL TAKE ON THE MIGHTY ALL BLACKS.

WHANGAREI Captain Cook was the first European to set eyes on the beautiful natural harbour which forms the heart of New Zealand’s northernmost city. He named this inlet Bream Bay, after the large quantities of fish caught by his crew, and other natural attractions in the area include walking trails in the volcanic Parihaka Scenic Reserve and the 26m waterfall in nearby Tikipunga. The city centre boasts a museum, excellent shopping in both the Cameron Street Mall or Strand Arcade and more than 90 terrific restaurants. Try The Fat Camel, Tonic or the Parua Bay Tavern.

CHRISTCHURCH New Zealand’s oldest city is recovering remarkably quickly from the devastating earthquake of 2011 and though some important buildings have had to be demolished there’s still plenty to see and do. The city’s International Antarctic Centre has a museum dedicated to the history of polar exploration and like most places in New Zealand’s South Island life is lived outdoors. Amongst the plethora of sports available are skiing, bungie-jumping, whale watching and golf. Those who prefer less energetic activities will find plenty of tempting shops, pubs and restaurants such as Fiddlesticks, The Curator’s House and The Tramway.

AUCKLAND With a population of more than a million, Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island is the largest city and port in Oceania outside Australia. Popularly known as the City of Sails, there’s plenty of opportunity to enjoy swimming, surfing and a wide variety of other watersports, or for more cerebral activities head for any one of the city’s art galleries and museums. Fans of military history shouldn’t miss the War Memorial Museum, the Maritime Museum or the National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy. For wining and dining try SidArt, Clooney’s or The French Café.

DUNEDIN The Scottish settlers who built Dunedin named their new home after the Gaelic word for Edinburgh and the city does feel like a little piece of Scotland with added penguins! Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only Scottish Baronial building, dominates the skyline and though the historic railway station is more reminiscent of Paris than Waverley, Dunedin’s street plan closely mirrors Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns. Lovers of food and drink shouldn’t miss a tour of Speights, brewers of the South Island’s favourite beer, and Cadbury’s World should need no introduction. If you’re still hungry and thirsty after such treats try Café Al Fresco, Kelly’s or Bon Appetit.

ROTORUA The nickname of Sulphur City is a clue to Rotorua’s main attractions of volcanic hot springs, geysers and mud pools but if geology isn’t your passion you can swim, water-ski, fish and cycle in or around the 17 lakes that border the city. Rotorua is also a centre for Maori culture and the living museum of Whakarewarewa shows how New Zealand’s indigenous peoples have used the area’s geo-thermal energy to their advantage. One such use was, and still is, to cook a traditional Maori banquet called a hangi and you can experience such a feast for yourself at the Matariki Hangi & Cultural Show. For more traditional dining try Sabroso, Stratosfare or Atticus Finch.

HAMILTON This university city boasts a zoo, the Waikato Museum, an observatory, the Arts Post gallery and the Sky City casino. The wider Waikato area was always the heartland of the North Island’s Maori and just 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre is the royal capital of Ngaruawahia, home of the Maori King Tuheitia Paki and the Turangawaewae Marae cultural centre. More sybaritic attractions include river tours of Hamilton’s world famous wine growing areas and trips to the Hobbiton movie set used in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. For a night out try the Victoria Street Bistro, Gothenburg or Palate.

WELLINGTON

TRAVEL

New Zealand’s capital has plenty to occupy Rugby fans between matches. The Wellington and Te Papa National Museums chronicle the history of the two islands from earliest times to the recent capture of a giant squid! There’s more movie magic at Weta Cave, home of LOTR/ Hobbit director Peter Jackson’s special effects company, and two incredible WWI exhibitions honouring the ANZAC’s contribution to the Allied victory. For more peaceful pursuits take a stroll along the city’s waterfront or to the Mount Victoria lookout to photograph the sun rising over the Pacific. Apart from a Lion’s victory could there be any better souvenir of a trip to the Land of the Long White Cloud?

GETTING THERE At the time of writing, details of tour packages with The Pride, the Lions’ official supporters club, were only being released to priority members but do not despair. Alastair Ruffman of Newcastle travel company Norseman specialises in organising spectator tours to major sporting events. THE BARN, THE FARMHOUSE, ELEMORE LANE HETTON LE HILL

PRICE GUIDE: 拢150,000 PER PLOT

A very large agricultural barn and range of disused stables with a separate entrance from the rear of The Farmhouse; the surrounding land extends to circa one acre. The current agricultural barns and disused stable block enjoy a fabulous setting on the edge of this farm steading development. They have their own private access from the northern elevation of the steading, leading into the stable yard.

The Planning Department are very keen to have the current agricultural barn removed and to demolish the stable block, which will create a signi每cant area of land for redevelopment. Initial planning discussions have indicated at least two, but hopefully three, dwellings to be situated within these grounds. The dwellings will complement the farm steading and have fabulous views over the surrounding countryside. They are likely to provide around 2,500 sq ft to 2,750 sq ft of accommodation each, which will equate to a four/每ve bedroom property. rare! Office: 0191 223 3500 66 | Collection

T GS LET IN REGIONAL LETTINGS MANAGER

GAIL MCLEAN

BRINGS US THE LATEST LETTINGS NEWS IN THE NORTH EAST… landlords had to deal with a whirlwind of changes to the law relating to rental properties. These covered everything from smoke detectors to eviction notices/ changes to section 21 notices [see the Autumn 2015 edition of The Collection… Ed] but on the 1st of February this year the final phase of these changes, the new ‘Right to Rent’ legislation, came into force. Right to Rent requires landlords to check that all their tenants have a legal right of residency in the UK and we’ve been working closely with our reference agencies to help our landlords comply with this new law. Thankfully everything seems to be running smoothly and whilst we don’t anticipate any major problems if anyone has any questions they should get in touch with our lettings office. With all the proposed legal changes now in place, and warm weather just around the corner, we’ve seen a strong upturn in the North East rental market and we at Sanderson Young Lettings have had a very successful Q1 despite facing the perennial problem of demand outstripping supply! However a lack of suitable rental properties in all sectors of the market is good news for landlords, investors and housebuilders as the shortage is keeping rents high and interest in new developments strong. Two ongoing developments that are bound to be especially popular

LAST YEAR

are Jesmond’s La Sagesse site, where the former girl’s school in Towers Avenue is being converted into 48 luxury properties by David Wilson Homes, and Ponteland’s Mill Rise where Linden Homes are offering 18 luxury 2 bedroom apartments overlooking the river. Sales of properties here are being handled by our rare! and Ponteland offices and as these sites are attracting lots of attention, interested parties should contact me without delay. As for the future of lettings, it’s encouraging that demand for high end rentals is still being driven by corporate lets, as large companies seek to house employees who may be new to the area in suitable accommodation. Our Quiet & Confidential service, which sources properties that may not be advertised on the open market, has recently let several large family homes in Jesmond and Gosforth for rents in excess of £4,000pcm and the rental periods for many of these homes have increased from 6 to 12 months. Whilst a strong rental sector in urban locations is to be expected, we’re also experiencing an imbalance of supply and demand in rural areas. As I write this, I have clients waiting to rent all types of residential property in Alnwick and North Northumberland so can I ask anyone in these areas who are thinking of renting their home, over the short or long term period, to please get in touch!

OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

JANET HOPKINSON EXPLAINS WHY PROPERTY AGENTS AND CONSULTANTS SANDERSON YOUNG HAS BECOME THE FIRST CHOICE FOR DEVELOPERS PROMOTING NEW RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY IN THE NORTH EAST… known that a house or apartment will be the most expensive single item most of us will ever buy but in an increasingly diverse housing market how does a developer engage successfully with potential purchasers? The obvious answer is to use, or create, a trusted brand because all customers associate a well-known name with a first class reputation. Indeed good branding is, at least in part, responsible for the continuing success of Sanderson Young. Over the last seventeen years, our commitment to the highest levels of service has helped us become one of the most respected names in North East property so it’s hardly surprising that more and more developers are choosing us to promote their latest projects. Even more gratifyingly, it’s not just local housebuilders who are working with Sanderson Young and we’re delighted to have been chosen to represent such prominent projects as Urban Splash’s Smith’s Dock in North Shields, Lindisfarne Homes’ Beadnell Point on the Northumberland Coast, Linden Homes’ Mill Rise development in Ponteland, and in Hexham the Trivselhus Swedish style housing by Esh at Hexham Gate. Besides our trusted name, Sanderson Young has been chosen to represent these projects because they each need a different area of our expertise to reach their target market. Smith’s Dock is an historic site that will be regenerated by Urban Splash’s unique approach to finding new uses for important industrial buildings. Beadnell Point is a rare opportunity to buy a purpose built second home in the heart of Northumberland’s heritage coastline and Mill Rise is an exclusive collection of apartments, in a unique village setting, which we’re selling and marketing on behalf of Linden Homes. Hexham Gate offers the latest in energy effiency and provides an alternative to the Tyne Valley housing style. Approaching two decades of experience also means we can offer developers a bespoke service designed to suit each

IT’S WELL

development’s individual requirements. For example, we can offer first time developers, or companies that may be new to the area, a complete package that sees Sanderson Young manage every aspect of promotion and sales. This can include our own in-house media department designing literature and creating advertising campaigns as well as providing highly qualified and well-motivated sales personnel. Similarly we can work with the staff of more established property developers who may need our particular proficiency in certain areas of the regional market. But whether we provide a full package, a partnership, or something in between, everyone at Sanderson Young prides themselves on their commitment to quality and this dedication continues to attract high profile clients. For example, our latest venture will see Sanderson Young working with the Esh Group to promote their new energy efficient homes being built in the Tyne Valley. The Hexham Gate development, recently featured in the Sunday Times, is one of the best examples of how groundbreaking green technologies are addressing the concerns of today’s home owners. Whilst the construction of the homes here is being undertaken by Esh Group, the timber framed buildings have been designed and fabricated by Swedish company Trivselhus. As you might expect from one of the leading housebuilders in Scandinavia, Trivselhus incorporate a range of energy saving features into every design and these innovations provide householders with both an effective shield against extreme climatic conditions and reduced fuel costs. The Hexham Gate site is particularly symbolic for Sanderson Young because working with companies at the cutting edge of construction has always been our hallmark. Whether it’s been regenerating the Tyneside waterfront, transforming redundant buildings in the suburbs or bringing the best rural conversions to the market, Sanderson Young has always been the name trusted by house buyers and property developers alike.

Home isn’t just where you live, it’s how you live This historic Tyneside shipyard is being restored to its former glory and brought back to life as a brand new riverside neighbourhood. Centred around three dock basins, which will form the heart of a lively community, you’ll find contemporary family homes, thoughtfully designed public spaces and plenty of places to eat, drink and play. What’s more, the long term transformation of Smith’s Dock will open up new connections along the river between Fish Quay and Royal Quays and from the town centre down to the waterfront. There isn’t long to wait, work will start this year on our first 34 new homes known as ‘The Plateau’, that sees hoUSe; our two and three storey contemporary family homes find a new home at Smith’s Dock, North Shields.

LOW-ENERGY HOMES LAUNCHED AT HEXHAM GATE

TRIVSELHUS BY ESH

DEVELOPERS HAVE RELEASED FOR SALE THEIR FIRST NORTH EAST COLLECTION OF BESPOKE LOW-ENERGY HOMES IN THE HISTORIC MARKET TOWN OF HEXHAM.

detached properties at Hexham Gate are now available to purchase, priced from £425,000, with a range of breakthrough design and technology features to drastically reduce the energy burden on homeowners. Hexham Gate, located on Corbridge Road, will offer a selection of four bedroom detached homes with the fabric-first approach to low-energy housing delivered by Trivselhus by Esh. Colin Willetts, sales and marketing director at Trivselhus by Esh comments: “Hexham Gate is set to be the region’s most exciting development of low-energy homes. Each property balances generous interior space and contemporary open plan living with a strong focus on reducing the overall energy footprint of the home. “Trivselhus by Esh properties are ‘A’ rated on the energy performance scale and help reduce everyday energy consumption through a range of design and technology features which offer alternative methods of energy use and distribution within the home. This new approach to home design is heavily influenced by the Swedish approach to homebuilding - putting energy efficiency at the heart of every home. “In addition to creating a more open-plan and generous living space, we focus on cutting-edge sustainable features at the design, manufacture and build stage for longer-term protection against rising energy costs. This keeps energy costs low and gives homeowners the flexibility to manage household bills with greater confidence and security.” Trivselhus by Esh was formed as a joint venture partnership between Trivselhus, Sweden’s leading housebuilder and

manufacturer of sustainable homes, with one of the largest construction firms in the North, Esh Group. Together, the two businesses share a unique vision to bring lowenergy Swedish housing design to UK shores at a series of multiple plot developments throughout the North. Each property at Hexham Gate features a modern, open plan ground floor living space and a fabric-first approach to building manufacture. The fabric-first process supports precision building design to create an airtight structure to retain heat within the building. Windows, doors and service channels are also manufactured in a controlled factory setting to ensure quality control of the energy-saving design features are embedded into the building at the pre-construction phase. Each of the Trivselhus by Esh properties include solar panels on the roof and mechanical ventilation to circulate warm air into different parts of the house through a concealed duct system. The properties also benefit from an air source heat pump to transfer warm external air into the building in the form of hot water. Colin continues: “We have five house types available for sale at Hexham Gate and interest has been strong with reservations already made by buyers looking for a more contemporary home of the future. “We already have two Trivselhus by Esh developments at Brampton and Wetheral, near Carlisle, which have proven very popular with buyers searching for an added value take on a traditional new build home. We’re excited to now be bringing this exclusive style of property to the Tyne Valley and look forward to unveiling our first showhome at Hexham Gate in the summer of 2016.”

ENERGY EFFICIENCY BECOMING AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION FOR MANY HOME BUYERS AND HOUSEHOLDERS, NEIL GORDON TAKES A LOOK AT HOW EVERYONE CAN CUT THEIR DOMESTIC FUEL BILLS…

BETWEEN 2004

and 2014, the annual dual-fuel bill for the average UK household rose by a whopping 140% (88% when adjusted for inflation) and this figure was considerably higher for larger properties. Though domestic energy bills have come down in recent months, this respite can only be temporary and as fossil fuels become more scarce prices are certain to continue their inexorable rise. Yet, whatever the future holds, more expensive oil, gas and electricity has already had an impact on the housing market and nowadays both house-hunters and mortgage lenders are taking domestic running costs into account when comparing properties. This means that home owners who’ve fitted energy saving features are finding their properties sell more quickly and for higher prices. THIS MEANS THAT HOME OWNERS WHO’VE House builders too are incorporating FITTED ENERGY SAVING FEATURES ARE moneysaving heating and hot water FINDING THEIR PROPERTIES SELL MORE systems into their new homes, and I’ll take QUICKLY AND FOR HIGHER PRICES. a look at one such development called

Hexham Gate in a moment, but first let’s look at what owners of older properties can do to make their homes more energy efficient: Take Control - around 53% of money spent on gas and electricity goes on domestic heating, so turning your thermostat down by just 1ºC can cut about 10% from fuel bills. Also, fitting thermostats that use smart technology allows heating to be turned off in parts of the home not in use. Change Your Bulbs – compared to traditional varieties, low energy lightbulbs such as fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) use around 20% less energy and last 8-15 times longer. Insulate – replacing or topping up loft insulation, draft proofing doors and windows, insulating cavity walls and fitting a proper jacket around hot water tanks will pay for themselves in just a few years. More advanced options, such as installing external wall insulation, thermal walls and double glazing, will take much longer to produce a return but they can make an instant improvement to a property’s aesthetics and comfort. HEXHAM GATE: If you are looking to buy a new-build property, it makes sense to purchase a design that offers the latest in energy efficient living and the Tyne Valley’s Hexham Gate is just such a development. With its fascinating history, glorious countryside and close proximity to Newcastle, Hexham has always been a popular place to live and these new timber framed homes, constructed by ESH Group using a design from one of Sweden’s leading housebuilders Trivselhus, are full of energy saving features. High levels of insulation, airtight doors, triple-glazed windows, and low energy light bulbs are fitted as standard along with:

01 02 03 room but far-infrared (FIR) heater panels heat the walls, floors and ceilings. FIR heaters can be retro-fitted in any property with very little disruption and as they use electricity, rather than hot water, they require a much lower energy input and operating period to maintain required temperatures. FIR heaters are also very effective at counteracting damp and mould. The heaters can resemble wall hanging prints and mirrors adding aesthetic design to your home. Install Heat Pumps and Solar Panels – though this equipment is harder to fit into older properties many homes can benefit from this energy-saving equipment that provides heat and hot water all year round. Air and ground source heat pumps work by extracting the energy that exists in the surrounding soil or atmosphere whilst modern solar panels use photovoltaic (PV) cells to generate electricity even on cloudy days. Whilst the cost of installation is significant there are (at the time of writing) government incentives for certain types of green technologies available.

Mechanical Ventilation With Heat Recovery MVHR systems use concealed ducts to extract warm air from kitchens and bathrooms and pass it through a heat exchanger to recover energy normally lost to the atmosphere. This energy warms fresh air drawn in from outside and uses it to heat living areas and bedrooms. Air Source Heat Pumps The ASHP system extracts energy from the outside air and uses it to heat water for the ‘wet’ underfloor heating and ULOW room radiators. This, combined with a large capacity tank, provides plenty of heat and hot water. Log Burning Stove Fitted as an optional extra, the wood fired stove can be used as a supplementary heat source when the underfloor heating and radiators are switched off. Energy Efficient Appliances All appliances at Hexham Gate have a top ‘A’ rating. Further energy savings are possible if these appliances are used during daylight hours when the solar panels are generating electricity (see below). Photovoltaic Cells (PV) Contrary to popular belief, PV cells do not need direct sunlight to work so even on dull days modern solar panels provide enough power to run lighting and household appliances.

IF YOU MISSED OUR PREVIOUS FEATURE ON THE FORTHCOMING GREAT NORTH SNOWDOGS PUBLIC ART EVENT IN AID OF ST OSWALD’S HOSPICE, YOU NEED TO READ THIS NOW… during the Autumn and Winter of 2016 the streets, parks and open spaces of the North East will become home to a unique series of individually designed Snowdog sculptures inspired by the lovable character from the award winning animated film The Snowman™ and The Snowdog. Each dog will be ‘sponsored’ by a business then painted by an artist (both well-known and undiscovered artists will be invited to take part), before becoming part of a free, mass public art trail that will showcase our region at its best. Participants will be able to follow the trail using the specially produced map, website (www.greatnorthsnowdogs.co.uk) and app from which businesses will be able to promote their services and link to the wider #GreatNorthSnowdogs campaign. Each dog will also feature a plaque that includes the sponsor’s logo as well as a digital code which, once downloaded, will enable local people and visitors to unlock more rewards and further information. Great North Snowdogs has been organised by creative producers Wild in Art in partnership with St Oswald’s Hospice and similar trails in other parts of the UK have seen huge increases in footfall and spend, which is why some of our region’s most influential and well-known TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SPONSORSHIP businesses have already signed up to take part. Corporate Social Responsibility targets because the event is raising awareness and funds for St Oswald’s Hospice Children’s Service. This area of the Hospice’s essential work provides short breaks and respite for children with incurable conditions as well as supporting mums, dads, siblings and other close relations who’ve been affected. St Oswald’s has been working closely with a number of high profile organisations to bring the Great North Snowdogs to the North East. As the trail is designed to lead participants from popular tourist destinations to lesser known areas of the region, having Tyne & Wear Metro as the official presenting partner has been a huge boost. With each of the sculptures finding a temporary home at sites based around its famous map, the Metro will play a key role in helping people discover the trail as Customer Services Director, Paul Walker, says: “The Metro will be the perfect way to follow the Snowdogs trail and we’re looking forward to helping as many people as possible discover the sculptures and explore our region during the event.” At the end of the 10 week trail, the Snowdog sculptures will be auctioned to raise more funds and Jane Hogan, Great North Snowdogs project lead, said: “This is a great marketing opportunity for businesses to get involved in a fantastic regional event which will achieve a great return on their investment. Opportunities to activate sponsorship and participation can be numerous and our team here at the Hospice can help you unlock your sponsorship. “From business, to schools, community groups to artists and designers, this event is set to bring the whole region together to celebrate our cultural identity, all while raising vital funds to support your local children’s hospice. You’d be mad to miss it.”

ONE OF THE WORST THINGS ABOUT MANY CARS IS THAT THEY CAN LOSE A SHED-LOAD OF MONEY IN DEPRECIATION, ALTHOUGH THAT DOES NOT ALWAYS HAVE TO BE THE CASE.

KING OF THE SUPERCARS TENDS TO BE FERRARI, A 60-YEAR-OLD ONE OF WHICH HAS JUST FETCHED A RECORD £24.7 MILLION.

LIKE HOUSES,

they can offer the best of both worlds in terms of enjoyment whilst you have them, and prove a shrewd investment when you decide to part company. In the case of property the trick is to buy a desirable house in the right location, whereas with cars it is all about the brand. It used to be a matter of buying a rare vintage or classic, but that is no longer necessary because punters can now predict the future, based upon past experience. King of the supercars tends to be Ferrari, a 60-year-old one of which has just fetched a record £24.7 million. That is enough to buy at least four of the most expensive houses in Gosforth or Darras Hall, or an impressive front-line penthouse in the tax haven of Monte Carlo with nice views of the Med. Such a figure makes the current Ferrari 488 GTB Coupe seem a snip at £182,800. However, if you bought one just a year ago and enjoyed driving it over 5000 miles or so, it would now be worth £215,000, which is an increase of more than 15 per cent. If you had invested your money in the highest-earning building society account, you would be lucky to have netted a couple of per cent, and now interest rates are predicted to plunge even >>

ENTER THE BRAND NEW FERRARI 488 SPIDER, WHICH IS ABOUT TO BECOME THE MOST HIGH PERFORMANCE SPIDER EVER BUILT BEARING THE BADGE OF THE FAMOUS PRANCING HORSE.

<< further, with the base rate possibly heading towards zero. However, whilst Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz or Porsche Coupés are among the best investments on the market, there is something even better – a convertible. These tend to be even more desirable as they often achieve a more attractive profile, and drivers are prepared to pay a premium for that invigorating wind-in-the-hair feeling. Enter the brand new Ferrari 488 Spider, which is about to become the most high performance Spider ever built bearing the badge of the famous Prancing Horse. Italians love statistics relating to curvaceous creations of desire, and in the case of the new 488 Spider they are hugely impressive.Powered by the same 3902cc turbocharged engine as the Coupé, the power plant achieves the instantly recognisable iconic Ferrari gurgle that only a Maranello-tuned V8 can muster, being even more aurally impressive in a roofless machine. The sound is automatically muted through residential areas, but returns with a vengeance in the countryside, which puritanical critics will no doubt argue is a dubious use of technology. Mounted immediately behind the seats for perfect weight

balance, the engine pumps out 660bhp at 8000rpm, with 760Nm of pulling power. This translates into scorching acceleration to 60mph in a mere three seconds, with a respectable top speed of 203mph. It uses the sort of turbocharging technology that Ferrari used to frown upon but has now taken to its pulsating heart as it enables this Spider to shave a full second off the benchmark 0-60mph acceleration time of its larger-engine predecessor. It continues to pull devilishly hard without pausing for a breather through 125mph in just over eight and a half seconds, which would be a quick 0-60mph time for most motors. A single second may not seem a deal-breaker in the early stages of flight, but it is in the world of macho supercars where it now takes just three of them to reach 60mph, virtually keeping up with Sebastian Vettel. Again, a reduction in CO2 emissions from 275g/km to a new low of 260g/km may not seem too significant, but it certainly is as a proportion of engine power. As with the disappearance of the normally-aspirated engine, there is now no manual gearbox either, with just a double-clutch sevenspeed automatic on offer.

Naturally it comes with the fun of driver-operated paddle-shifts on the steering column to play with, resulting in average economy of just under 25mpg. On the road the new 488 Spider is a quantum leap not just for Ferrari but for supercars in general, which indeed it needs to be, with the likes of mainstream rivals such as the Audi R8 V10 snapping at its heels. This lightweight aluminium and magnesium Spider newcomer overcomes the usual problems by being just as tractable in town as the country, with an untemperamental engine and a roof that automatically comes down and stores away in just 14 seconds at speeds of up to about 30mph. Unlike compromised rag tops, the folding hard top arrangement is actually lighter, has a proper rear window, and is virtually hermetically sealed. The only downside is that the glorious engine is no longer on show, but the twin flying buttresses behind the driver and passenger are such a work of art that they more than make up for that. One final advantage of the technological evolution of the brand is the relentless addition of the latest cutting-edge communication systems, which in the case of the Ferrari 488 means an Apple-based system that offers voice and touch functions covering everything from calls, maps, music and messaging. The premium for the Spider over that of the GTB coupe may be in the region of ÂŁ20,000 but whilst their individual values will each have soared in years to come, that differential is likely to increase ten-fold in the case of the ÂŁ204,400 Spider.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE PRINCE’S TRUST- A NEW CENTRE FOR DISADVANTAGED YOUNG PEOPLE IN NEWCASTLE

As the name suggests The Children’s Foundation was set up to provide children and young people across the North East with the very best health care and well-being services. Since its launch in 1990, this important local charity has helped thousands of vulnerable youngsters, and in 2015 alone more than 30,000 young lives were changed for the better, but it relies on the generosity of ordinary people to fund this vital work. The charity holds several large fundraising events throughout the year, including an annual Family Fun Day, and after the rip-roaring success of last year’s event, The Children’s Foundation is planning another. The date for your diary is the 26th of June 2016, the venue is again Kirkley Hall and families from across the region are invited to get involved in activities such as traditional lawn games, inflatable bowling, treasure hunt and much more. With a craft fair, mini food festival and face painting also taking place there really is something for everyone. Seven Stories will be making an appearance with their ‘Into the woods’ storytelling and Daslne will once again offer their relaxed space for children with Autism. Entry to the Family Fun Day costs just £3 (under 2’s free) and includes admission to Kirkley Hall’s Zoological Gardens, zip wire and climbing wall. Money raised from the day will go towards

combating the distress, disabilities and disadvantages faced by many children and young people in the North East and North Cumbria. Jonathan Clegg, Community Fundraiser at The Children’s Foundation said, “It was fantastic to see over 3,000 people having such a great time last year and we’re looking to make this year’s event even better! Not only do people get to enjoy all the activities we have on offer but they are also making a difference to the lives of children’s and young people right here in our region.”

We have much to be proud of in the North East but there are two statistics that should leave us all shamefaced. In our region there are around 50,000 young people not in education, training or employment and we also have the highest level of youth unemployment in the UK. However, the northern arm of The Prince’s Trust has identified a unique opportunity to change the lives of young people by creating a groundbreaking new centre and charity headquarters in Newcastle. The new centre will allow The Prince’s Trust to develop a youth employment and enterprise hub whilst consolidating their activities and strengthening relationships with the youth charity’s partners. To help make this exciting project a reality, there’s a sensational calendar of fundraising events planned for 2016. What better way could there be to mark The Prince’s Trust’s 40 years of service? Your support will go to help people like ice skater Shannon Davison who was hospitalised after a cruel attack that threatened to destroy her career. Following a year of mental and physical abuse, Shannon began using prescription drugs and alcohol but The Prince’s Trust Get Started with Dance programme helped her turn her life around. With help from The Trust, Shannon secured a skating job in Spain and was also the runner up in this year’s Prince’s Trust and Samsung Celebrate Success Awards!
