I would like to welcome all our regular readers to the spring/ summer bi-annual magazine for Sanderson Young.

MY FORECAST FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR IS A CONTINUED POSITIVE DEMAND FOR HOMES AND A FAIR BALANCE BETWEEN THE SUPPLY OF STOCK.

Having increased our distribution significantly, to over 30,000 copies throughout the region, we were delighted to see the impact of our last magazine and the increased sales and new listings we achieved following its publication.

The lifeblood of estate agency continues to be the ability to offer a comprehensive range of house styles, types and price levels throughout the North East of England. Sanderson Young have had a busy six months and enjoyed a very proactive market, where demand for housing has been constant and, in many cases, in excess of the supply. This has led to modest house price increases for certain price levels. My company has always been heavily involved with the sale and development of new homes throughout the region and I am delighted that, in 2018, we will see over £81.5 million worth of new homes being RELEASED FOR SALE through Sanderson Young. There are many new and exciting sites to be brought to the market, with a completely diverse mix of house styles and designs. The traditional locations of Gosforth and Jesmond continue to be heavily sought after, but we are also achieving record price levels now in Bamburgh and on the north east coast of Northumberland, where we have proven that effective marketing does bring significant rewards for our clients. One of our flagship new homes schemes is undoubtedly the Smith’s Dock development at North Shields where we are working with Places for People and Urban Splash to create a magnificent new village of fabulous contemporary homes. This will increase in number over the next 10 years to create a stunning environment for residents to live, work and play. The regeneration of this amazing docklands area has proven to be extremely popular and recent sales have far outstripped the supply that we currently have available. More dwellings are to be brought to the market soon to meet the demand and we are delighted to be leading the market place with such efficient, stylish and modern homes. April 2018 saw the launch of the latest version of our website which carries the title of this article and represents the ethos of our clients with “where your story begins”. The new site has many fabulous changes creating an even more significant impact to the way that we display our homes for sale and to let. The use of large professional photographs and strong social media support enables us to ensure that our homes, whether they be for sale or to let, reach out to the maximum number of possible tenants or buyers at any stage. Our website is a significant contributor to the leads that we receive within the company and I am delighted that it reaches not only such a large audience within the region, but also over 20% of our enquiries are from London and nearly 10% from the United Arab Emirates. The new site makes property searches even easier and the software is fully responsive to all mobile and desktop devices, creating maximum impact for the user experience. With full scale image galleries, floor plans and videos, we lead the field in the region for mid and higher value homes. The website’s launch has been extremely successful and

our feedback has been extremely positive, proving that clients like the way we market our houses to achieve the best price. With the majority of our distribution of the magazine taking place in May 2018, we very much look forward to a warmer and sunny late Spring and early Summer. Traditionally, this time of year also creates a super opportunity for our clients to increase the saleability and attractiveness of many of their homes by focusing on their gardens and terraces. The availability of outdoor patios, al fresco dining, external lighting and sound systems, as well as fabulous outdoor seating areas, creates a premium value to many of our homes. Gardens, regardless of their size, are a very important factor and the ability to enjoy year-round outdoor areas is very much a bonus to any property. Regardless of whether your outdoor space is a small Juliette balcony or first floor terrace, or whether it is an acre of beautifully manicured gardens and grounds, it is natural for people to want to enjoy their outdoor areas whenever the weather allows us to. Modern day architects are increasingly focusing upon making the main living and entertaining spaces within everyone’s home look straight on to the outdoor garden areas and to open up the vision through floor to ceiling bi-folding glazed doors, which enables much more light and therefore harmony to come into peoples’ everyday living space. My forecast for the remainder of the year is a continued positive demand for homes and a fair balance between the supply of stock. We expect to see property prices stabilise and the higher price levels will show signs of catching up with the more popular lower levels, with increasing demand from people looking for larger properties which have been so competitively priced over recent years and now, in many cases, create ‘bargains’. The top end of the market has previously not been as popular as the lower price levels and we are now delighted to be reporting very much more interest in the housing stock over £750,000 and up to £2 million where very good value can be gained. If you are considering a move in the next six months, please do not hesitate to contact our team, or myself, who will be delighted to assist you with any sale or rental which may be required. I hope that everybody enjoys a fabulous summer throughout 2018 and that we experience some record levels of sunshine and warmth throughout this popular season. Please do not hesitate to contact me personally if I can assist you in any way. Duncan Young Managing Director Sanderson Young duncan.young@sandersonyoung.co.uk

NEWS & UPDATES

STATE OF THE

MARKET

WE ASK SANDERSON YOUNG’S

JANET HOPKINSON & NICOLA OSBORNE

TO COMMENT ON KEY TRENDS IN THE CURRENT NORTH EAST PROPERTY MARKET…

COMMUNICATION IS KEY In today’s fast paced, tech-driven world, it is more important than ever that information is delivered to our clients at the touch of a button. Whether that be photography of a property the minute it is launched to the market, a confirmation of an arranged viewing, or news that an offer has been accepted, news must travel fast. In such a competitive market, we strive to provide our clients with ongoing communication of the highest level, and I have been delighted recently to hear feedback from customers that our service level is considerably higher than our competitors, with our staff going above and beyond to secure a deal and keep those imperative lines of communication open.

JANET HOPKINSON Operations Director

It is too easy with the advancement of technology to allow machines to work for us, to send those messages automatically and to use all the tools, websites and apps to make our job easier. However, there is still no replacement in the service industry for personal communication with the property expert you have put your trust in. These conversations are imperative to building relationships and gleaning what clients require from us to make the process as quick and painless as possible. Moving house is an unbelievably stressful time and having to chase up lines of communication makes this even more frustrating. I am extremely proud of the reputation we continue to uphold and whilst we continue to drive the market with the use of social media, digital marketing and advancements in technology, the foundation of our business will always be to provide the highest quality of service to our clients.

POSITIVE NEWS FOR MILLENNIALS? There has been much written about the lot of the Millennial in recent years, with some of the news being less than positive when it comes to buying property. Whilst there is no doubt that the difficulty in raising deposit monies has led to ‘Generation Rent’, we are seeing much more positive signs for the younger buyer. The continuation of low interest rates and the positive steps the government have taken with the introduction of Help to Buy, and the changes to stamp duty, has meant that the outlook for the younger buyer is much more positive. Changes to taxation around the buy to let market has also meant that these buyers, once priced out, have a better opportunity to secure good quality reasonably priced homes. We are excited to be working on schemes that will provide well located, modern space for the young professional. Situated in the heart of Ponteland, Hemingway Court by Ascent Homes will offer an excellent range of apartments with prices from £135,000. At Smiths Dock in North Shields, the launch of Smokehouse has given us the opportunity to be able to offer smaller house types and apartments with prices from £125,000. Affordable pricing and sound financial advice is enabling many buyers to secure their future in their own home.

NICOLA OSBORNE Corporate Client Director

Contact us for further details on these schemes and our Private Finance team to assist with viability.

FIRST GENERATION

THE ORIGINAL HOUSE ON THIS SITE WAS BUILT CIRCA 1978, HOWEVER THE MAGNIFICENT PROPERTY WE SEE TODAY IS LARGELY THE RESULT OF EXTENSIVE REMODELLING AND IMPROVEMENT

THIS ISSUE’S FEATURED PROPERTY IS ONE OF THE FIRST OF THE NEW GENERATION OF LUXURY FAMILY HOMES TO BE BUILT WITHIN THE PRESTIGIOUS DARRAS HALL ESTATE… Darras Hall, the enduringly popular residential estate situated 7 miles west of Newcastle, was created in 1910 to allow ordinary people the chance to build their own house away from the grime of the city. This “can-do” philosophy still characterises the homes here and there’s no finer example than 79 Darras Road. The original house on this site was built circa 1978, however the magnificent property we see today is largely the result of extensive remodelling and improvement by the current owners, who purchased the property in 1994. The entrance to this sumptuous home is marked by two imposing stone pillars and the driveway beyond the electronic gates passes through beautifully manicured lawns, and over an ornamental bridge, to the house itself. There’s substantial parking at the front

of the property and to the right of the perfectly proportioned, red brick façade there’s an ancillary building incorporating a 2 car garage, WC and laundry. Separately within the home’s extensive grounds of 1.6 acres are a chalet/workshop and two garden sheds. Now, if you thought the outside was impressive wait till you see inside. From the pillared, neo-classical porch, double doors lead into the imperious hallway which features a glorious gullwing staircase. To one side of this superb stairway is the principal drawing room which boasts a beautiful Louis XV style fireplace, luxurious deep pile carpet and windows overlooking the well maintained front garden. More double doors lead from this room to the equally elegant dining room which has been fitted with a range of handmade display cases. Another unusual, yet highly practical, feature of the dining room is a conservatory which extends into the rear garden. Not only does this feature provide 180º views of the garden’s mature trees, flower beds and shrubs, it allows the rest of the room to be flooded with natural light. >> Collection

<< The third reception room on the ground floor is currently used as a family sitting room and its centrepiece is another fabulous French fireplace, which was actually purchased from a chateau in France. Like the rest of the rooms on the ground floor, this room enjoys delightful vistas over the gardens. There’s also a door leading to the family kitchen/breakfasting area, which is another example of the intelligent design that has created a first-class family home at 79 Darras Road. The kitchen here has been equipped with its own conservatory and this turns what was once a purely functional area into the ‘hub of the house’. The additional glazing makes the whole space feel warm, light and airy and, as you would expect in a home of this calibre, the kitchen has been fitted with handmade, hand painted cabinets as well as Corian worktops and integral appliances. There’s also a walk-in pantry, separate WC and plenty of useful storage space as well as access to the utility rooms and garage. We now move upstairs to the galleried landing, which boasts a moulded plaster ceiling of outstanding craftsmanship. Originally, there were four large double bedrooms on the first floor but the current master bedroom suite has been created by combining the two bedrooms that once occupied the space at the rear of the property. However, the two-room design could easily be reinstated if required. The master bedroom has two ensuite dressing rooms, whilst the double bedroom at the front of the property has its own ensuite shower room. A further double bedroom at the front of the house is currently used as a study. The luxurious family bathroom, which is also located on this floor, features a Jacuzzi bath and a large, separate twin shower. To complement these facilities, there is also a separate shower room, which can function as a steam shower. A spiral staircase leads to the second floor of the property which currently consists of a large single room that’s used as a gymnasium but it would be quite easy to convert this space into one large double bedroom, or two smaller bedrooms, if desired. Similarly, should the new householders require more space

outside, the present owners, several years ago, purchased additional land adjoining the property and this garden could easily accommodate a tennis court, swimming pool or other recreational facilities. In conclusion, the delightful gardens, striking façade and well-designed interiors all combine to create a fabulous family home that also possesses its own unique air of elegance. Interest in 79 Darras Road is bound to be intense so, if you’re looking for a stately modern mansion, in a much sought-after location, which also has easy access to Newcastle city centre, you should book a viewing without delay.

“Great details are the essence of great design” Designing and Procuring Interiors for Properties Abroad Developing or renovating a property in a far-flung location has its own unique problems for clients, not least the concerns involved in guaranteeing that the ideas envisioned are brought into reality. An experienced architectural designer satisfies that brief, sitting at the client’s side, protecting their interests, managing costs, managing quality and, importantly, creating the liaison between other professionals and contractors to help to ensure a seamless delivery of the project. Experience demonstrates it is not prudent to leave the entire delivery of a project, including costs and procurement, to the creators of the external architectural envelope without additional detailed professional help. Developers & Commercial Design Many years of studying lifestyle trends and interiors, and the experience built up in attending all the continental trade shows to identify the latest finishes and design directions, can also be a benefit to the developer. When coupled with years of procurement experience, amalgamating the two can lead to construction efficiencies when planning the build for a property. Delivering cost effective ‘designer interiors’ always improves realisable value for a given property. Additionally, the same approach minimises timescales for the disposal of that property in a competitive market place, by giving the project a marketing edge.

Benefits you can expect by using HG Design Solutions; •

25 years experience designing luxury homes.

Commercial clients can also benefit from the advice of an architectural designer particularly in the area of procuring the latest in design ideas from a palette of standard products. An example would be designing a themed hotel room in a ‘New England’ style. Leaning on vast experience and product knowledge can often provide a surprisingly cost effective solution to satisfy a client’s needs.

ANGKOR WAT TEMPLE CAMBODIA

WHITEHAVEN BEACH AUSTRALIA

RAILAY BEACH THAILAND

MT. NGAURUHOE NEW ZEALAND

AUSTRALIA – thanks to the shared language and culture, the Land Down Under has been first choice for backpacking Brits for quite some time but, not wishing to serve behind a Sydney bar, I’ve been looking at things like helping a wildlife sanctuary save endangered marsupials. All I’ll need, besides a willingness to get my hands dirty, is a working holiday visa [cost: from £349] and when I’ve completed my tour of duty there are plenty of places to enjoy a well-earned rest. I’ve always had a hankering to visit the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands offer everything from snorkelling off the pristine white sands of Whitehaven Beach to helicopter tours of the largest living structure on earth. IF, LIKE ME, YOU’RE OF AN AGE WHERE THE CHILDREN HAVE FLOWN THE NEST, THE HOUSE IS ALMOST PAID FOR AND YOU’RE AS NEAR TO THE TOP OF THE CAREER LADDER THAT YOU’RE EVER GOING TO GET, YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING WHAT THERE IS LEFT TO ACCOMPLISH IN LIFE. HOWEVER, IF THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE STILL BURNS BRIGHT WITHIN YOU, THERE’S MUCH MORE TO MIDDLE AGE THAN COMFY SLIPPERS AND RACHEL RILEY ON COUNTDOWN. AUSTRALIA NEWreassuring ZEALAND What is greatly to we fifty-somethings is that the skills we’ve all learned over a lifetime of THAILAND & are FIJIin great demand around the world and you don’t have to be a fully work and raising a family qualified doctor ECUADOR or irrigation engineer to be able to make a real difference. So long as you are reasonably fit, there’sNEPAL a range of charitable projects across the globe that are looking for volunteers of a more mature age and here are a few of the worthwhile ventures I’ve been considering: CAMBODIA

NEW ZEALAND – as with Australia, the Anglo-phone culture can lessen the shock of travelling to the opposite side of the globe and there’s much more to the Land of the Long White Cloud than rugby and sheep. Among the numerous conservation projects that are advertising for unskilled volunteers is the South Island’s Punakaiki Coast Reforestation Scheme that’s creating ‘new heritage’ land for future generations to enjoy. To this end, volunteers plant trees, collect seeds and work to eradicate foreign animal and plant species that are threatening New Zealand’s unique ecosystems. New Zealand’s highly developed tourist industry also offers plenty of places to relax after your placement has ended and these range from tours of the locations used in the blockbusting Hobbit films to long distance treks along the worldfamous Milford Track. >>

NOTTURNO ALLE FIJI

THAILAND & FIJI – with most flights to the Antipodes requiring a stop-over, I’m planning to combine one working holiday in Australia or New Zealand with another in either South East Asia or the Pacific. For the outward journey, a volunteer programme based in Krabi, Thailand (which is about an hour from Bangkok) is advertising for English teachers and no prior teaching experience or TEFL qualifications are required. For the return home, there’s a similar teaching project based in Fiji that also needs volunteers and after finishing my tour of duty I’m planning to spend several weeks exploring the remote but beautiful Mamanuca Islands. Of course, planet earth is a lot bigger than the Englishspeaking world so here are some projects that also welcome enquiries from older more adventurous ‘gappies’: WEST AFRICA - small farms in French-speaking Togo need people to help take care of animals and undertake other agricultural tasks whilst staying with a local family. Alternatively, in Senegal, there are opportunities to support the micro-finance revolution by helping street children start their own businesses. ECUADOR – if you want to follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin, and travel to the remote Galapagos Islands, volunteers are needed to help remove alien species that are endangering these unique marine environments. NEPAL – apart from being the home of Mt Everest and the British Army’s famous Gurkhas, Nepal can offer some

VOLCANO COTOPAXI ECUADOR

truly rewarding adult volunteer projects. These include organising educational activities for children and doing renovation work for communities damaged by other forms of tourism.

CAMBODIA – besides healing the deep wounds inflicted by Pol Pot’s brutal communist dictatorship, joining a care project working with disadvantaged children provides volunteers with the opportunity to learn a range of practical skills such as traditional Khmer cooking and pot making. NORTH EAST TEENAGERS

DISASTER HIT ISLANDERS ON SATURDAY 17TH MARCH,

FIVE ENTERPRISING NORTH EAST TEENAGERS

SET OFF TO THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS (BVI)

TO HELP WITH RELIEF EFFORTS

FOLLOWING THE UNPRECEDENTED DEVASTATION OF HURRICANE IRMA IN SEPTEMBER OF LAST YEAR. The Hurricane may have blown into and out of the attention of the world’s media, but it has remained at the forefront of the minds of friends Beccy Horgan Davison (18), Eliza McKendry (19), Henry Belfiori (19), Steph Treanor (18) and Henry Horgan Davison (16). The group volunteered their time and talents during the Easter holidays to support the community efforts alongside Unite BVI in the British Virgin Islands. Beccy Horgan Davison, leader of the Mission BVI volunteer project, said: “The scale of damage caused by Hurricane Irma last year greatly affected me on a personal level after holidaying there, where I spent a lot of time exploring the islands and communities and making friends with the locals. “After the hurricane struck, I gathered help from my friends, some of whom had also visited the British Virgin Islands and some of whom had been affected by natural disasters before, and we put a plan in place to do everything we could to help. We began fundraising activities immediately and working multiple jobs to save money in order to pay for our travel.”

As well as offering their time, the team have been actively fundraising to make a financial contribution to the region. To date, they have raised over £7,500 through their JustGiving page, which has been raised by private donations and by a raffle of prizes donated by local businesses, which was held in the Chillingham Arms in Heaton. Based on Virgin Gorda, Beccy and the Mission BVI team supported a major scale community clean up, re-building houses and shelters, working with local schools to re-establish the art and culture department, as well as teaching swimming to the islanders (80% of which do not know how to swim). In the lead-up to the trip, Mission BVI has worked with the support of numerous businesses in the North East to source much-needed school supplies and stationery for the trip. Beccy’s brother, Henry Horgan Davison, continued: “We’ve been overwhelmed with the support we’ve received so far from businesses in the North East but we’re still appealing for more to come forward with anything they can offer, as every little bit helps. We were desperate to help, and it’s great to see that so many North East businesses were too. It’s a real statement about our region that so many people have come together to offer anything they can.” According to a BBC news report on the Sixth of March, on many of the British Virgin Islands up to 80% of buildings have been destroyed, and many UK citizens are still living in shelters some six months after the disaster. Two large cruise lines have also stated that they won’t be returning to the Islands this year – despite the desperate need for tourism to sustain the local economy. Now that they have returned from the Islands, the team will continue to fundraise and hope to reach a target of £10,000. They plan to hold a presentation about their experiences providing aid, detailing their relief work, the conditions on the island and stories from the people out there. To find out more about the team’s efforts, please visit their Instagram page @missionbvi or you can donate by visiting the Just Giving website and searching for MissionBVI (all one word, lower case).

EXPLORE TRENDING GARDEN FEATURES FROM OUTDOOR AUDIO, LIGHTING AND FIREPLACES, TO KITCHENS AND LUXE LANDSCAPING AS REPORTED BY HELEN WILSON-BEEVERS.

Approaching the optimum season for getting outside and grabbing some rays, garden design companies are now guiding us in the direction of going one step further. Ideal for enjoying the spring and summer season, there’s an emerging versatile product selection which is specifically suited to outdoor living. Think brickwork garden islands, fitted with outdoor kitchen areas and top-of-the-range barbecue systems. Add in outdoor sound sets, professional lighting and a beautifully manicured lawn, tapping into a deluxe yet stylish summer vibe. With significant practical security purposes, garden lighting

can also create a magical haven to escape to during spring, summertime and beyond. Sip prosecco and put your feet up, sharing an alfresco supper or aperitif under the stars. String lights from a canopy or hang between branches if you prefer a bohemian feel. Throw in decadent outdoor rugs, inspired by exotic adventures. For upmarket extravagance, lighting can be expertly attached into fixtures, fittings and even sculptures. Design a sumptuous sanctuary, softly lit by a plush glow. Should you be seeking a timeless lighting look; lanterns, ornate lamp posts and other options are there for the taking too.

THERE IS A GROWING TREND FOR MAKING THE MOST OF OUTDOOR LIVING, ESPECIALLY WHEN CONSIDERING A PATIO REDEVELOPMENT AS PART OF AN OVERALL GARDEN DESIGN. Whether starting a landscaping project from scratch or including additional garden features, outdoor speakers offer an innovative way to modernise a property. Hidden within garden design elements or created as part of a standalone statement, you can really let your imagination run wild. Something to contemplate with summer on its way, bringing a fresh twist to garden proceedings, a sound system incorporates a fun element for socialising and winding down alike. Impress your guests and throw a stylish evening soiree. Upgrade a tired BBQ with a new luxurious model or perhaps even install a full outdoor kitchen. Think balmy evenings and cosy blankets by the fire, adding in a throw or two draped over garden furniture. A nice touch found in cosmopolitan city bars, faux fur blankets can maximise the amount of time spent outside, particularly here in the North East where temperature is of the essence. Ivor Scott is the founder of North East stoneware firepit company, Lithic Fire. Based in North Northumberland, Ivor has over 30 years’ experience of working with stone. Here he explains the recent insurgence in outdoor living: “Lithic Fire has seen a real increase in enquiries for natural stone firepits since the start of 2018. There is a growing trend for making the most of outdoor living, especially when considering a patio redevelopment as part of an overall garden design. There is a definite influence from firepit designs seen in the USA. >> Collection

<< A specific area is often defined for an outdoor living area, perhaps including permanent seating in brick or stone, with a large stone firepit as a centrepiece. Other features can include outdoor kitchen areas, usually under cover, with BBQ, sink, water supply, worktops and perhaps a firepit within that.” With local stockists a valuable resource for North East traders and businesses alike, nationwide companies can also ship goods elsewhere. For example, Fire Magic in Kent sell to those all around the country, focussing on outdoor kitchen design as well as selling high spec barbecues, grills, fridges and other accessories to be used in the garden. Very popular at present are their fire urns, providing warmth and contemporary chic for your outside living space. Ornate and elaborate, this is a summer showstopper to delight and inspire. Garden kitchen creations span across integral barbecues built into stonework, complete with doors and storage solutions too. Countertop grills come in a variety of high end models, meaning there’s no need to scrimp on outdoor experiences. Similarly,

A NEW WAY OF

THINKING

IT HAS BEEN A VERY

TESTING TIME

FOR RESIDENTIAL LANDLORDS OVER THE PAST TWELVE MONTHS, WITH RISING PRESSURES ON THE MARKET DUE TO INCREASED TAXATION, LEGISLATION AND REDUCED TENANT FEES, LEAVING MANY CURRENT AND PROSPECTIVE INVESTORS CONSIDERING WHETHER PROPERTY IS A VIABLE SOURCE OF INCOME FROM THEIR PENSION POTS AND SAVINGS.

GAIL MCLEAN,

REGIONAL LETTINGS MANAGER OF SANDERSON YOUNG,

“MANY OF MY CLIENTS HAVE BEEN WITH ME SINCE WE LAUNCHED THOSE DEVELOPMENTS OFF PLAN, WHERE WE ACTED AS SALES AGENT AND INTRODUCED INVESTORS TO THESE OPPORTUNITIES.

has identified an opportunity for those looking to futureproof their investment and reap maximum rewards – the new homes market. “Looking back to the prime market of 2003 – 2007, where the city’s regeneration of the Quayside and city centre was the heart of the market’s activity, this presented a sound opportunity for the residential landlord. Despite some dips in capital values, which we are now finally starting to see reverse, for those who planned long term investments in these developments the rewards have been great. Long term tenancies, corporate rents, nil void time and minimum refurbishment costs have resulted in premium rents and fantastic yields for our clients” says Gail, listing the many positives of investing in a new development scheme. Largely the flagship developments within Newcastle city centre, these professional apartment schemes still retain a contemporary feel some 15 years on and Gail still maintains strong relationships with those initial investors. “Many of my clients have been with me since we launched those developments off plan, where we acted as sales agent and introduced investors to these opportunities. I had the apartments advertised and rented from the day of completion and many have never seen a week of void time since this date with a waiting list of prospective tenants. I have forged fantastic relationships because of this and as such our clients trust our advice on where their next big investment should be.” New development, having been almost non-existent in the market over the ten years post-recession, is experiencing a renaissance. The principal theme – regeneration. “Some of the most derelict and neglected areas of our region have been transformed by

stylish, contemporary residential schemes and we have been delighted to be involved in the future investment of these locations” says Gail. “The ground-breaking regeneration project by UrbanSplash and Places for People of Smiths Dock in North Shields represents one of the finest investments currently available for landlords. I have been advising clients interested in its uber-stylish Smokehouse; a glass fronted, industrial designed residential complex fronting onto the river with fantastic views and award-winning interiors. This is an opportunity to invest in a scheme attracting tenants prior to a sale completion”. Hadrian’s Tower, set back from Rutherford Street in the heart of Newcastle, is set to become the most sought after residential address in the city. The prestigious development from The High Street Group provides 26 storeys of prime luxurious living and will encompass 162 predominantly one and two-bedroomed apartments, as well as a café, laundrette, open-plan meeting space and an exclusive 26th floor sky lounge. The development creates an exceptional opportunity with 5% interest on all exchange monies throughout the 18-month build programme. Hadrian’s Tower provides an assured and guaranteed 7% net yield for five years, with completion scheduled for early 2020. What is Gail’s advice when considering the future of the lettings market? “An investment in property has to be just that – an investment, a business decision, a financially sound choice. Landlords cannot consider that just because a house is in a nice area, is decorated beautifully, or is somewhere they would wish to live themselves it will represent a sound investment. We are the property experts and can guide you through the options available, costs to consider, future financial implications and how to make some money. After all, that has to be the aim for any investor in this competitive market”. Collection

We are proud of the extensive number of houses we let on a weekly basis, yet due to exceptionally high demand, stock levels constantly run low. Sanderson Young manage over 100 properties on a daily basis and some of those lets are shown below and on the following pages. We require at least 4-5 new landlords per week to satisfy the demand for increasing numbers of tenants, who often are of a very high quality and from blue chip companies, coming to Sanderson Young first due to our reputation for quality homes kept to a high standard. If you are a landlord looking for an experienced property manager with extensive connections throughout the business sectors, please give me a call. We would be delighted to help rent your property within a very short period of time, at the best price possible. I am particularly proud that over 50% of my landlords have seen significant rent increases due to the economics of the current market. Are you letting your portfolio at the right price ?? THE NEW HOMES EXPERTS

THE NEW HOMES DIVISION OF SANDERSON YOUNG ARE EXTREMELY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THEY WILL LAUNCH A STAGGERING

WORTH OF NEW BUILD PROPERTY TO THE MARKET IN 2018 ACROSS

17 DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS. This level of industry has not been seen since peak market days pre-recession and Janet Hopkinson, New Homes Director of Sanderson Young, is delighted to welcome this investment to the region. “We have been at the forefront of new homes development and sales since Sanderson Young’s inception in 1999, and have acted alongside some of the country’s most exciting developers on flagship schemes throughout the North-East Region. A downturn in the sector over the past decade is now turning on its head, and we are thrilled by the level of commitment and investment in the provision of exciting new homes”. Janet is also excited by the variety offered by the schemes due to launch in the coming months, with different trends emerging and areas transformed by these projects. “We are certainly seeing a commitment from developers to not only provide much needed new homes, but to also adjust landscapes with stimulating architecture and improve whole areas through regeneration projects. At Smith’s Dock in North Shields, UrbanSplash and Places for People have brought about a sense of place making and even have the stamp of approval from one of the most respected minds in modern housing, George Clarke”. We have also seen an investment in the luxury market, with executive family homes providing a much-needed step up to assist movement in the middle market price point. “Brunton Square from County Life Homes in North Gosforth has been a resounding success, with values from £750,000 to almost £1 Million, and almost 50% of these sales were facilitated by assisted move schemes and part exchange offers, enabling purchasers to

move into their new properties much quicker and easier than they anticipated”, comments Janet. Contemporary versus traditional housebuilding will also be tested this summer, as Lindisfarne Homes, famous for the outstanding Beadnell Point development which sold out after unprecedented levels of demand last year, release two sites on the same weekend. “This is a fantastic opportunity to hit the market at exactly the same time with two very different projects”, says Janet. “The bespoke designs of executive housing in the stunning villages of Warkworth and Lesbury will offer buyers a fantastic choice between modern styling and traditional form. This is a trailblazing idea and we are very excited to be on board with sales, working with a developer who creates a high-quality product”. Sanderson Young have fostered a full-scale development team of chartered surveyors and experienced sales agents, enabling them to cement their position as market leaders in this field; providing land appraisals and cutting deals at the early stages of a development, through to providing advice on price and housing mix on site, as well as sales and marketing strategy, branding and advertising. “We love to be involved in a project from day one, advising our clients from the ground up, where we can really make a positive impact and provide unprecedented market knowledge backed up by real sales data from our significant experience in the sector. Our clients find this invaluable to assessing the viability of a project and yield the best results from the land they have acquired” comments Janet. “2018 is set be a very exciting year and we can’t wait to get moving with sales on the outstanding portfolio of new homes bringing much-needed life to the regional marketplace”.

Currently, Newcastle is one of only six designated centres for offshore renewable engineering in the UK whilst both of the city’s two universities have recently been rated among the country’s top locations for computer sciences. These two factors alone mean the IT sector on Tyneside is worth a staggering £1.25 billion to our local economy and this upward trend is set to continue with rates of growth projected to reach 28% by 2019. This rapid expansion is expected to create upwards of 14,000 new jobs and, as these employees will require a staggering 512,000 Sqm of new office space in which to work, Newcastle City Council has created the Accelerated Development Zone to help. The ADZ offers three prime locations ideally suited to the

THIS MOMENTOUS BUILDING… WILL PROVIDE 165 ONE, TWO AND THREE BED APARTMENTS OF EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY.

city’s growing number of hi-tech industries and Hadrian’s Tower overlooks the westernmost of these areas, which has been named Science Central Park. Situated between Newcastle United’s iconic St James’s Park football ground and the city’s historic China Town, Science Central Park has already attracted more than £350m of funding. This cash is transforming the former S&N brewery into a world beating centre for science and innovation and Newcastle University has already relocated its expanded business school into the site. This, together with the opening of the £58 million Urban Sciences Building, is certain to help Newcastle’s student population reach the predicted 60,000 over the next ten years. Besides ground breaking research into sustainable economic growth, Newcastle University is also ranked among the world’s top 100 universities for life sciences and medicine. Therefore, the planned addition of a Learning & Teaching Centre, together with the National Centre for Ageing Science & Innovation and the National Institute for Smart Data Innovation, will not only create the third ‘National Centre for Scientific Excellence’ at Science Central Park, it will cement Newcastle’s unrivalled reputation for being the UK’s best university city. Of course, all these new scientists, lecturers and students will need somewhere to live and the steady growth in demand for new homes has led to some very impressive numbers for those looking to invest in residential accommodation. For example: property values in the city have increased by 24.78% over the last five years and a 2017 study demonstrated that, with returns of

6.92% per year, Newcastle is one of the top ten locations in the UK for rental yields. Hadrian Tower is perfectly placed to make the most of this incredibly dynamic market because, when completed, this momentous building, from Newcastle-based developer, The High Street Group, will provide 165 one, two and three bed apartments of exceptional quality. Each of these sublime living spaces will showcase the very best in contemporary residential accommodation and the entire building has been designed to offer a ‘future-proof’ investment that will meet the evolving demands of both owners and renters. With easy access to Science Central Park and the city centre’s wide variety of cultural and leisure attractions, it’s envisaged that Hadrian’s Tower will have a strong appeal to students from overseas who are increasingly looking to Newcastle to continue their studies. These premium renters, who already make up 29% of Newcastle’s student population, expect to benefit from on-site amenities that match their affluent upbringing, so the accommodation, public spaces and services at Hadrian’s Tower will match or exceed the new Design Space Standards. To meet these stringent guidelines, which are intended to ensure that all residents will have ample space to enjoy their time in the city, Hadrian’s Tower will offer a 24/7 concierge service, ‘touchdown’ meeting spaces, integrated Wi-Fi and high-speed broadband, whole-house ventilation and sprinkler safety systems but the crowning glory is the 25th floor Sky Lounge. This ultra-chic café-bar, which will boast unrivalled views over one of the world’s most recognisable skylines, will help make Hadrian’s Tower the most sought after residential address on Tyneside. Even more importantly, with guaranteed returns of 5% during construction, and 7% for five years after completion, demand is bound to be exceptionally high so, if you’re interested in investing in Newcastle’s exceptional future, please contact me without delay. You can contact Duncan Young at Sanderson Young’s rare! SEA NEIL GORDON MEETS PHIL KITE WHO IS LEADING A TEAM OF FOUR COURAGEOUS NORTH EAST ROWERS IN THEIR BID TO

CONQUER THE ATLANTIC… The 3,000 miles of ocean between the Old World and New is one of the toughest environments on earth, so it’s the perfect setting for one of the hardest events in the maritime sports calendar: the Talisker Atlantic Challenge. Competitors in this punishing race have to propel a tiny cockleshell craft from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean by the power of oars alone and, to put the enormity of this task into perspective, ten times as many people have Climbed Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic. With 50 ft waves, skin blistering sunshine and muscle numbing cold just three of the perils facing the intrepid crews, it takes a very special person to undertake such a gruelling voyage but North East businessman Phil Kite, captain of Tyne Team Innovation, has found three hardy souls willing to join him in the 2018 event. “Though I freely admit I’m well into my second mid-life crisis, my fellow competitors are on a much more even keel” laughs 57 year old Phil who, until last year, was CEO of North East engineering giants Reece Group. Incredibly Phil has only been rowing for three years but others in the crew do have more experience. Though Durham born Guy Clack has spent his working life in IT, away from his desk, he’s been rowing for 25 years and can usually be found in a boat going up and down the River Tyne’s famous Newburn Straight. Similarly, 37 year old mechanical engineer Dave Higgins has been a keen rower since school and until recently was coaching both the junior and ladies’ squads at the Tyne Amateur Rowing Club. This brings us very neatly to Claire Hughes, the only lady member of the squad. Having driven a rickshaw across India, it’s clear that this professional project manager loves a challenge with a difference and the thought of being stuck in a tiny boat with three sweaty blokes for more than two months doesn’t bother her at all.

“AS OUR NAME OF TEAM TYNE INNOVATION SUGGESTS, WE WANT TO HIGHLIGHT ALL THAT’S BEST ABOUT THE NORTH EAST, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO INVENTION AND ENGINEERING.

124

Collection

“When I hit 30 I discovered a new lease of life and, far from settling down, I discovered rowing and sea kayaking. Now I’m really keen to see just how far I can push myself, both in body and mind, and the Talisker Challenge will certainly do that!” she says. Naturally, undertaking any long-distance endurance race is a journey of self-discovery for those taking part but Phil is also keen to point out that Team Tyne’s entry will benefit our region as a whole. “As our name of Team Tyne Innovation suggests, we want to highlight all that’s best about the North East, especially when it comes to invention and engineering. We’re also planning to raise a lot of money for charities Daft As a Brush, St Oswald’s Hospice and the Stroke Association,” he adds. One look at the four page list of kit that each boat must carry reveals the huge amount of effort required just to put their boat in the water. As a result, Team Tyne are actively seeking help from innovators, sponsors, volunteers and anyone else who’d like to be part of this extraordinary race. “Our current supporters include Lilley & Gillie, who make marine navigation instruments right here in North Shields, Sunderland based Big Solar, who are leaders in PV technology and AkzoNobel who make marine paints in Gateshead but the benefits of sponsorship aren’t restricted to suppliers and manufacturers of marine related equipment. We also have fantastic support from lawyers Womble Bond Dickinson, accountants UNW and the universities across the region. Moreover, individuals can also get involved through our 250 club, and by donating,” says Phil. There’s no doubt that this is a fantastic opportunity for North East businesses to showcase their products in a high profile global event with an international audience so, to find out more about the sponsorship packages available as well as how ordinary people can get involved, take a look at their website:

WE’RE ALL DEDICATED TO BRINGING MORE PEOPLE INTO THE GAME AND, AMONGST OTHER THINGS, WE WANT TO MAKE CRICKET MORE ATTRACTIVE TO YOUNGSTERS, BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS.

Football, of both the round and oval ball varieties, may dominate the North East’s sporting headlines but we shouldn’t forget that cricket in our region also has a long and noble history. The first recorded North East cricket match was played as far back as 1766 and our two historic county teams have scored some notable successes in recent years. Durham CCC won the First Class County Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2013, whilst Northumberland CCC won the Minor Counties Knockout Cup in 2006 and the Eastern Division Championship in 2007. They were also runners up (on run rate) to Lincolnshire in the 2016 season. Despite the name, the Minor Counties Championship is, in fact, the second highest tier of county cricket in England and though the Northumbrians failed to repeat their success in 2017, new chairman Gordon Halliday has high hopes for the future of Northumberland County Cricket Club. “Our successes in recent years are even more remarkable when you consider that we don’t have the resources available to other sides. Our pool of players is drawn from far fewer local clubs than in other parts of the country and, because most of our players and administrators are amateurs with families and full-time jobs, they can’t devote all their time to cricket. As a result, the county side sometimes struggles to field a competitive XI so we’re enormously proud of what our players have accomplished,” he says. Of course, many sports complain that there’s a lack of resources at the ‘grass roots’ level but Gordon is determined to use his long experience, both on and off the field, to ensure that

Northumberland’s county side can help maximise the potential of every cricketer in the region. Though born in Edinburgh at a time when Scottish cricket was practically non-existent, Gordon learned the game at school and started playing for South Northumberland CC when he moved south of the border in 1975. Whilst working professionally as a town planner, he continued to pursue his passion for cricket and, as a useful righthanded batsman/medium pace bowler, he represented both Scotland and his adopted county of Northumberland. Sadly, in 2005, a hip injury ended Gordon’s playing career but, once his days at the crease were over, he channelled his love of the game into umpiring and a variety of administrative positions. Now he’s also retired from full-time work, he’s become one of a trio of new faces at NCCC and he’s keen to highlight the previous management team’s achievements. “Alan McKenna, [chairman], Stuart Tiffin [team manager] and Jacques du Toit [captain] have done a fantastic job keeping Northumberland at the forefront of Minor Counties Cricket but, as they’ve all decided to move on, we now have a wonderful opportunity to build on their success. Apart from myself in the chair, John Tindale has taken over as team manager whilst Tom Cant will be our new captain. We’re all dedicated to bringing more people into the game and, amongst other things, we want to make cricket more attractive to youngsters, both boys and girls. Ultimately, we hope that playing for Northumberland’s senior side will become the chief aspiration for our county junior players and we also believe building on our strong links with Durham CCC will help both the county and club aspects of North East cricket to prosper,” he says.

AGAIN, IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT ALMOST EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH NCCC IS A VOLUNTEER AND THEY NEED AS MUCH SUPPORT AS POSSIBLE TO HELP THEM PROPEL NORTHUMBERLAND BACK TO THE TOP OF THE MINOR COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP. SO, IF YOU’D LIKE TO JOIN NCCC AS A PLAYER, SPONSOR OR MEMBER, CONTACT GORDON ON 07785 727053 OR VIA THE NCCC WEBSITE: WWW.NORTHUMBERLANDCCC.PLAY-CRICKET.COM

THE DEMONIZATION OF DIESEL VEHICLES IS HAVING THE OPPOSITE EFFECT OF HELPING TO SAVE THE PLANET, AND IS ACTUALLY DRIVING UP OZONE-DEGRADING EMISSIONS.

This is because there is a massive switch away from diesels, which do not emit large quantities of carbon dioxide, in favour of petrol-powered vehicles, which do. Motorists are being persuaded to make the move away from oil-burning engines because they produce nitrogen oxides instead, which are believed to be carcinogenic, or cancer causing. However, whilst this is a scientifically-proven fact, those dangerous emissions are mainly exhausted into the air from older diesels, especially high-mileage buses, lorries and taxis. New diesel vehicles are fitted with highly-efficient filters that

trap the particulates, which together with the lower CO2 emissions, make them cleaner than petrol vehicles in the opinion of many industry experts. Another benefit is that diesel-powered vehicles can typically travel twice as far as their petrol equivalents on every tank, which means that less fuel is actually used. Unfortunately for the diesel engine, the damage has now been done, in the short term at least, with sales expected to be down by about a third this year. The situation has not been helped by the impending >> Collection

TECHRULES >

BRITISH CAR COMPANY TRIDENT SAYS IT IS ON THE CUSP OF UNLEASHING ITS ICENI MODEL, WHICH WILL BE THE WORLD’S FASTEST AND MOST FUELEFFICIENT DIESEL SPORTS CAR. << imposition of higher taxes and several major European cities preparing to ban diesel vehicles completely. This is spectacularly bad timing for motor manufacturers that have invested billions into the latest generation of diesel-powered vehicles to showcase what they consider to be the huge advantages over petrol units, some of which are diesel hybrids. British car company Trident says it is on the cusp of unleashing its Iceni model, which will be the world’s fastest and most fuelefficient diesel sports car.

130

Collection

Capable of running on mineral diesel or biodiesel, the Trident Iceni uses a 6.6-litre V8 turbodiesel engine to generate up to 660bhp of power and an impressive 1050lb/ft of torque to endow it with F1-style acceleration to 60mph in a mere 2.9 seconds. There is a top speed in excess of 190mph yet with average economy of 50mpg and a range of more than 1500 miles it can easily travel from Newcastle to Nice on a single tank. Chinese company Techrules has developed a diesel-turbine electric supercar called the Ren with a power output of a remarkable 1,287bhp and a power-to-weight ratio higher than that of a Bugatti Chiron. This endows the lightweight supercar with acceleration to 60mph in a mere three seconds, and a top speed in excess of 200mph. The 80-litre diesel fuel tank would enable the vehicle to travel from Ponteland to Paris with half a tank to spare. Such diesel-powered supercars may not be a common sight but, like successive diesel-powered Le Mans winners, they illustrate the remarkable combination of power and economy that can be achieved, paradoxically with the benefit of low emissions. Many of the most popular affordable supercars from Porsche, Maserati, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Bentley and a host of others

are oil-burners. They include models such as the £140,000 Bentley Bentayga, not to mention the Range Rover that it upstages, with a 4.0-litre diesel engine generating 435bhp of power and a whopping 900Nm of torque. This prodigious combination endows the gargantuan 4x4 SUV with acceleration to 60mph in just over four and a half seconds, with a top speed of 170mph. Despite weighing a whopping three and a quarter tonnes, the eight cylinder diesel engine averages 36mpg in comparison to just 22mpg for the 6.0-litre 12-cylinder petrol-powered version, with a CO2 rating of 210g/km against 290g/km. Hardly environmentally-friendly in either guise, but much more so in the case of the diesel. There are a host of other equally-impressive sports-orientated diesels, such as the £58,500 Maserati Ghibli that generates 660Nm of pulling power for an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph and acceleration to 60mph in just over six seconds, with economy nudging 50mpg. Audi, which has won Le Mans 11 times, has transferred its successful E-Tron diesel hybrid combination to its hugely popular Q7 SUV range to achieve the best of both worlds. Mating a V6 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine to an advanced battery pack results in acceleration to 60mph in six seconds, with a top speed of 145mph and a CO2 rating of just 48g/km for the £67,560 Q7 E-Tron.

This is a CO2 rating of less than half that of a one-litre threecylinder petrol-powered Nissan Micra, with the Q7 boasting an official economy figure of 155mpg and the added ability to travel completely emissions-free for 35 miles using battery power alone. Nonetheless, the concept of oil-burning engines is suddenly out of favour, regardless of the realities of their comparative cleanliness, whether as mineral diesel, bio-mass or diesel/electric hybrid. Behind the scenes several recently-perfected diesel supercars are being mothballed, whilst Toyota has become the first motor manufacturer to announce a ban on new diesel sales completely by the end of the year. The demonization of diesels is proving devastating, possibly for all the wrong reasons, and whilst some pundits believe they will make a comeback with a vengeance, it could be some time before their wheel of fortune begins to turn again. REAL TENNIS…

Deep in the heart of Jesmond is a strange redbrick building that looks like a cross between a church and a school but it’s neither of these things. In fact, this imperious example of Victorian Gothic architecture is a real tennis court. This remarkable survivor is home to the Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club but it was originally built, in 1894, for the private use of wealthy industrialist Sir Andrew Noble. The court was opened to the public in 1932, with the formation of the JDRTC, and its future has been assured by the club recently renewing its 250-year lease on the premises. This extraordinary sporting facility, which is one of only 46 real tennis courts left in the world and the only one in the north of England, has also benefitted from a £200,000 refurbishment - but what exactly is real tennis? At this point I should point out that, whilst the more familiar lawn tennis is a direct descendant of real tennis, the two games are quite different but let’s begin at the beginning. Real tennis was first played 800 years ago in the streets of French towns so modern courts, along with much of the game’s terminology, are based on the architecture and language of medieval France. The very name ‘tennis’ is said to be a corruption of the French words ‘tenez-vous’ which were shouted by the server to warn pedestrians that play was about to start. Similarly, the open galleries and sloping roofs, called penthouses, which are the unique features of real tennis courts, recall the shopfronts, churches and other buildings that were part of a typical medieval street. Besides the court, how the game is played also differs greatly from lawn tennis. For example, rather than serve directly at an opponent, a serve in real tennis must hit the roof of the receiver’s penthouse before anything else. This allows a variety of devilish opening shots to be played, each of which are designed to outwit the receiver in a different way. Moreover, hitting the penthouses

or other obstacles absorbs the power of a shot so, to win points, players must be more accurate and make greater use of spin. This element of the game means victory in a real tennis match doesn’t always go to the strongest, or to the swift, but to those with a deftness of touch. It’s this emphasis on strategy and skill, rather than raw power, that makes real tennis so intriguing but, make no mistake, a good, hard-fought match provides plenty of physical exertion. Real tennis can therefore provide an excellent way to take some much-needed exercise, especially as there’s no need to fear being whitewashed by a club’s young guns. I’ve already mentioned how the design of a real tennis court can neutralise the strength that gives younger players such an advantage in other sports but, add to this, a handicap system that penalises experienced players and you have a game where a novice, even one of more mature years, has a good chance of beating a veteran. Indeed, everything about real tennis is designed to produce close, enjoyable matches and because most players took up the game as adults, old hands tend to be more forgiving of errors made by their rookie opponents! Of course, it’s impossible to list all the attractions of real tennis in a short magazine article but if I’ve piqued your interest in what was, reputedly, Henry VIII’s favourite ballgame, you’ll be pleased to know that the club is actively seeking new members of all ages and abilities. To entice you further, Scott Blaber, JDRTC’s full-time professional, is offering an hour’s introductory lesson for free and three further hours’ tuition for a total fee of £60 - and you can even borrow a racquet. After that, annual membership of the club is £200 (u18s are free) and the court costs just £9 per-player-per-match to hire (£8 for matches played before 5pm). Best of all, once Scott has taught you the rudiments of the game, the club will even find your playing partners; just enter the time you want to play into the online booking system and Club Manager Kerry Blaber will do the rest…

Following in the footsteps of their hugely successful Great North Snow Dogs Trail, St Oswald’s Hospice have recently launched information about the follow up campaign. Called Elmer’s Great North Parade, in August 2019 you will be able to track these colourfully adorned elephants throughout the region’s streets. A beautiful set of sculptures inspired by beloved children’s book character Elmer the elephant, these brightly coloured pieces have been created by the hospice in collaboration with Wild in Art and Andersen Press. Written and illustrated by David McKee, Elmer is a book series depicting a vibrantly coloured patchwork elephant. Now a favourite character also found in activity books and themed accessories, Elmer stands out wherever he is found. Published by Andersen Press in 1989, adults will also recognise the elephant from their own childhood. The trail will take place over a ten week period beginning next summer, running from August to October 2019. As part of the campaign, businesses can get involved via sponsorship opportunities, raising funds for St Oswald’s Hospice. Involving both the North East heart and

raising awareness of the hospice’s work, this is an eye-catching way to evoke community spirit. Offering regional artists and up and coming talent the opportunity to get involved, it is an ideal chance to showcase skills. In addition, children will be able to follow the trail and take part in activities as part of the little trail learning programme.

The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation’s charity event calendar is full of new and exciting offerings. From April’s sparkling evening with Doddie Weir in Carlisle, to the Pol Roger & Bath Rugby Special Event, Doin’ It For Doddie in Bath on 5th May, there are plenty of ways to support the foundation. Also coming up in June is the Ross Sutherland’s Sporting Dinner held in Inverness at the Caledonian Thistle FC Stadium. My Name’5 Doddie official merchandise has recently been launched, enabling supporters to pick up the Doddie’5 Tartan Collection created by ScotlandShop. Depicting the tartan tones which the foundation has become known for, the blue and white elements represent Scotland, while the black and yellow are a nod to Melrose RFC and finally, black and white links back to Newcastle Falcons. The collection includes a tam, tie and scarf. By buying merchandise or offering your fundraising support, funds will go directly towards assisting research into Motor Neurone Disease and also offer valuable help to those affected. Raising both awareness and funds, My Name’5 Doddie will continue their vital work throughout this spring and summer. Making their way into the later parts

of 2018, My Name’5 Doddie will be working on investigating upcoming Motor Neurone Disease research and as a result directing funds raised towards the right place. Looking into current data, Sean McGrath has been managing the first part of this year’s plans. Establishing relationships with both MND clinical experts and potential donors alike, watch this space for more My Name’5 Doddie news.
