The last six months have seen a tremendous amount of change in the housing market and I am delighted to report that we have experienced some very encouraging signs between March and May of this year, with increasing buyers registering and sales being achieved. Sanderson Young, like other estate agents, have in recent times reviewed their operational procedures and recognise the increased levels of business being transacted through online business. Whilst we are keen to ensure that we become extremely efficient and streamlined on new business and social media, we would still like to retain the quality of having a very well located headquarters and local office. The recent consolidation of both of our operations in Gosforth into the one branch, at 95 High Street, has proven to be highly successful and I am delighted to report that we have significantly increased our sales in the first five months of the year in comparison to 2018. Sanderson Young is a member of the Mayfair Office Group, a group of independent estate agents, based in London, and this enables us to reach out to over 470 offices throughout four different continents in the world. The network of our branches has a tremendous impact in America, as well as in South Africa, Europe and in Hong Kong where we receive a large number of enquiries through our website. Our Sanderson Young website has always strived to be very easy to use and effective with its large photographs, Google Earth locations and street views, as well as excellent floorplans, and all of these are now enabling our clients to gain the information they want at a much quicker speed. Buyers now expect to use 360 degree camera photography and drone images that we provide giving an overview of the whole house along with its estate and grounds as well as the magnificent high level mast shots that we provide of a house, enhancing the look of your home to its optimum. Photographs will continue to be a vital part of the way we run our website and the way we support our social media, which is increasingly leading to a greater number of viewings, offers and sales. The high street is also vital to us and I am pleased that Sanderson Young is the only family owned, private estate agency who has their headquarters on Gosforth High Street and we are very proud of our prominent corner frontage, with an excellent arrangement of offices at ground, first, and second floor levels, including a board room and good meeting rooms for our clients to discuss their business in private. I believe the worries of the high street continue to be a threat and we have seen other service industries, such as travel agents and banks, close some of their branches, which will lead undoubtably to vacant units becoming available amid this increasingly mobile world of transactions. It is important that we continue to support those industries and businesses on our high streets, if we wish those high streets to continue to survive and thrive. I am a great believer in supporting your local marketplace and have great pleasure buying from the butcher, the seamstress, as well as the travel agent and using the local hairdresser, who all contribute significantly to our day to day lives. The strength of Sanderson Young locally, expands not just on Gosforth High Street and in Jesmond, where we have a significant number of properties, but also to the Northumberland coast where our newly opened Alnwick office has had outstanding success. Instruction levels in the first four months of 2019 are up 200%, sales are up by 70%, and I am delighted that we have so many new and exciting schemes coming to the market from our

Alnwick branch which will, by the end of June, provide the largest estate agency window display within the whole of the Alnwick area. Our traditional base in Ponteland provides our third branch and I have always enjoyed the Coates Institute building, in the centre of the village, which has a tremendous architectural quality to it. The branch there is well supported by local experts who cover the Tyne Valley, as well as Darras Hall and surrounding villages, and creates a very good support to our clients. Sanderson Young’s new homes business has continued to go from strength to strength, and we have seen some fabulous new sites being launched in recent times, as well as the selling out of other sites in North Northumberland, especially in Beadnell, Rennington and Lesbury, where our outstanding partners are creating beautiful homes that buyers want and often at a timescale earlier than when the builder can finish the completion of these beautiful houses. We hope to announce the instruction of our company on one of the largest new build, residential schemes in the heart of Newcastle and we will undoubtably see significant interest on this site, which will provide stunning family homes in one of the most popular suburbs. Hadrian’s Tower, in Newcastle, which is being developed by the innovative High Street Group, will undoubtably change the skyline of Newcastle City Centre and as it approaches its peak on the 27th floor, the public are constantly amazed at the height of this new inspirational building. The Smith’s Dock development in North Shields has completed its first phase, with 80 new apartments and 34 houses, the houses being virtually sold out and the apartments down to the last remaining 15, which will also sell out in the very near future. We are expecting to announce more details about the onset of Phases 2, 3 & 4, which I predict will take place in the next 3 years, and this is an extremely exciting scheme for us. We currently represent 10 new homes sites in the region’s smaller schemes, rather than the larger developments noted above. These schemes include: fabulous, luxury stone built, houses near Mitford, a beautiful conversion of a highly impressive, three storey, stone building on Newgate Street in Morpeth, and a very impressive and delightful site of 5 new houses in the heart of Heddon on the Wall. Hemingway Court in Ponteland offers 25 superb 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in the heart of the village. The conversion of a former care home in Wylam into luxury apartments is nearing its completion and these schemes just represent a small taste of what we have available within the marketplace at the moment. Whether you are looking to buy, sell or let a property in the near future, my team is here to help and assist you and we welcome the opportunity of working with our clients, past, present and future, to ensure that we exceed their expectations and provide a local quality estate agency with the strength, knowledge and experience, as well as an international reach to buyers from all over the world which undoubtably assists in making our opportunity to sell your home much greater. If I can be of any personal assistance to clients, please do not hesitate to contact me: duncan.young@sandersonyoung.co.uk With my very best wishes for a warm, sunny and healthy summer in 2019. STATE OF THE

MARKET

WE ASK SANDERSON YOUNG’S

JANET HOPKINSON & AMY BRICE

TO COMMENT ON KEY TRENDS IN THE CURRENT NORTH EAST PROPERTY MARKET…

WHO’D BE AN ESTATE AGENT? Some people think our job is easy, that property sells itself. That a buyer appears from nowhere, loves a property and agrees to buy it, and the sale then speeds effortlessly to a satisfactory conclusion without assistance. Let me tell you it doesn’t work like that, not most of the time anyway. A ‘proper’ estate agent’s job is not to sell houses, it is to move people. Moving anything is often complicated and fraught with unforeseen consequences. Think about moving six-year-old twins singlehandedly from home to school every morning, or moving 250,000 tons of crude oil halfway around the world, or moving a herd of sheep from one hillside to another. It all takes planning, patience, knowhow, experience and resolve. It means expecting the unexpected, problem solving and diplomacy. I don’t know about you, but if I wanted to move a herd of sheep I would hire a shepherd. And, in a way, that’s what estate agents are. We arrange for something with lots of moving parts - each with a mind of its own - to end up where it should be on the date it is supposed to be there. Estate agents shepherd people, contracts, surveys, mortgages, removals, withdrawals, gazundering, false starts, disappointments, the unforeseen and triumphs from one place to another. Sometimes it’s a smooth process. But all too often it isn’t. You may not think it’s worth paying for a shepherd but believe me, when it has been pouring with rain all day, the quad bike has broken down, a fox snatched a lamb and a large group of unreasonable ewes made a break for freedom you will think a shepherd is worth every penny.

JANET HOPKINSON Operations Director

Why are we estate agents? We do it because we enjoy being shepherds. Some may think that selling houses is not much of a job but moving people on to the next stage of their lives as seamlessly and stress-free as possible, is a job we enjoy and think is well worth doing.

OFFERING OUR CLIENTS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS I am delighted to introduce to this edition of Collection the range of professional services we offer our clients, operating as a full scale property consultancy with unrivalled experience in the residential market. We have forged exceptional links within the property and wider business community, not only in the North East, but also through our international network of agency offices centred in Mayfair; we also have cultivated strong connections in the investment market in Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham. The North East recently featured in several broadsheets as a “hot spot” for property investment and we are proud advocates of this to our national and global investors. We offer our clients the best of both worlds; an intimate knowledge of the North East market from the view of an independent family firm, whilst having the dominance and influence to rival any national operator. We believe in creating a great customer experience from start to finish; whether carrying out a single professional RICS valuation on behalf of a family estate, an acquisition or sale of a property portfolio, or assisting a national, award winning housebuilder with the sale of a regeneration project spanning almost a decade. Our team is fully committed to every project and has the dedication and experience to provide advice at any stage.

AMY BRICE MRICS

Our New Homes division is experiencing one of the best periods we’ve seen, particularly post-recession, despite the tumultuous Brexit negotiations. It is very much “business as usual” for our developer clients, and we admire their commitment to getting a wide variety of projects out of the ground over the past year. We are proud to be working on some of the region’s most high profile developments, with many significant announcements coming later in the year. Having hit the ground running in 2019, I would be delighted to discuss potential projects confidentially with any clients requiring assistance.

THIS ISSUE’S FEATURED PROPERTY IS

A MAGNIFICENT FIVE BEDROOM, DETACHED, FAMILY HOME,

LOCATED IN THE HEART OF NEWCASTLE’S HIGHLY DESIRABLE SUBURB OF JESMOND, WHICH COMBINES THE VERY BEST OF HAND CRAFTED TRADITION WITH ULTRA MODERN DESIGN…

TRANSFORMING THIS 90 YEAR OLD HOUSE INTO A STATE-OFTHE-ART FAMILY HOME IDEALLY SUITED TO 21ST CENTURY LIFESTYLES.

14

Collection

When it was built, circa 1928, the house at 25 Lindisfarne Road represented the epitome of genteel living in the Jazz Age. The suburban location, close to the centre of Newcastle, meant all the amenities of the city were easily accessible, yet the double bay façade, overlooking the extensive gardens, gave the householders the feel of living in the country. Indeed, the original home here boasted all the features you would expect to find in a comfortable country house. These included an elegant entrance hall, with a central staircase and feature windows that allow light to flood into all the interior rooms - and it’s a testament to the current vendors’ vision that they’ve managed to retain many of these period features whilst transforming this 90 year old house into a state-of-the-art family home ideally suited to 21st Century lifestyles. During the current owner’s tenure, the property has evolved

and expanded to embrace all that is best in today’s domestic architecture and a perfect example of this evolution is the conversion of the top floor, which was completed in 2016. Normally, loft conversions make no attempt to solve the problem of the roof’s pitch severely restricting the new rooms’ usable space, but here the installation of an ambitious glass wall along almost the entire length of the roof line has created a penthouse suite with two full sized rooms overlooking the beautifully manicured lawns and mature trees of the garden. In addition to the sliding glass doors opening onto a glazed balcony, one of the new third storey’s rooms boasts an en-suite shower room and walk-in dressing room, whilst the other could serve as a sitting room with fabulous views over Jesmond and Jesmond Dene or the fifth bedroom. Either way, these two rooms could provide an impressive guest wing or a studio flat that would be the envy of every teenager. Moreover, this imaginative use of space is not just restricted to this extraordinary home’s top floor. In fact, every room in the house has been modified and adapted to incorporate groundbreaking design philosophies and the result is a truly outstanding family home. A good illustration of how modern innovation can improve the house’s original features is the gorgeous herringbone, parquet

floors in the principal reception rooms. Only the very best homes of the 1920s could afford such luxury and whilst many of these hardwood floors were ruined by fitting wall-to-wall carpets in the 1960s, the teak blocks at 25 Lindisfarne Road have not only been retained and restored, the addition of full-height, double width French doors and windows, as well as a roof lantern in the kitchen ceiling, allows the beauty of the wood, and the skill of the craftsmen who created these floors, to be fully appreciated. As you would expect in a home of this quality, the standards of fixtures, fittings and décor are exceptional throughout. The >>

Lindisfarne Road is a quiet, secluded tree lined avenue that leads to the tranquil beauty spot of Jesmond Dene, yet Jesmond’s vibrant and eclectic mix of shops, schools, restaurants, bars and leisure/sports facilities are also within a few minutes’ walk. Hobbs’ baby blue Hallie Dress (£189) is a luxuriously simple style, complete with frill hem. Pair with bright accessories to mix it up a bit or wear alone for a classic dress debut. Sunny yellow is also big news this season, and Jeanne Dress (£189) combines the colour with the print trend. A relaxed style, both polka dots and floral detail are included, enabling you to wear a classic pattern clash with ease. It’s as simple as that. Staying with the sunny hues, Hush showcase their Piped Printed Shirt (£59) in camel. The camel and palm tree print are a summery delight, while the shirt itself has a piped pyjama-style finish. Wear alongside denim for off-duty weekend casual. Back to the floral, and daisy print will always be a classic, as shown by Hush’s Veria Frill Skirt (£75). Pair this relaxed number with a simple white tee plus your favourite jewellery and await a print compliment or two. Jessica Russell Flint is a deluxe independent label with print at the forefront of their design ethos. Also, on the skirt wish list is their Snakeskin Wrap Midi Skirt and Snakeskin Print Mini Skirt (£99 each). On the subject of safari, another way to add print to proceedings is by picking up a headband or silk head scarf. Simple accessories ensure colour clashing or print debuts can be seamless. Top trend picks include the chic Monet Dress in Blue Leopard Daisy (£315)- a tiered piece combining leopard print and floral tones with a baby blue background. THIS YEAR MARKS THE

125TH ANNIVERSARY

OF LEGENDARY NORTH EAST BORN LIFESTYLE BRAND BARBOUR REPORTS HELEN WILSON-BEEVERS

22

Collection

Remaining at the helm of the brand for five generations, the Barbour family has continually focused on product innovation, authenticity and heritage. Spanning the global market, Barbour is currently sold in over 40 countries worldwide. Designer collaborations with big names such as Emma Bridgewater,

Margaret Howell and Engineered Garments, ensure the brand maintains its current stylish incarnation, while remaining true to classic Barbour quality. Chairman Dame Margaret Barbour explains: “I am so proud to be celebrating the company’s 125th anniversary in 2019. It gives me enormous pride to see how the brand has grown from its small beginnings selling oilskins to the mariners in South Shields to the global lifestyle company we are today.” Dame Margaret continues that reaching this important milestone is “testament to all of our loyal customers who have supported us over the years and to our employees, past and present who have contributed to our success.”

Joyce Fawcett began working at the company in 1974 and still remembers the exceptionally warm and welcoming reception she received on her first day. Joyce reminisces about a particularly special jacket story. She explains that a loyal customer brought their jacket to Barbour’s repair department, but being so old and worn, it was beyond help. After Joyce’s manager intervened, a new one was sent out, free of charge. This tale is testament to the family-feel Barbour projects, and why both staff and customers are so passionately loyal. Rory Allen joined Barbour in 2014 as a Part-Time Sales Assistant and became Supervisor at the Factory Shop in 2018. He adds, “Growing up in Jarrow, I have been surrounded by Barbour for as

long as I can remember. I really do think the brand is synonymous with the area. The family-owned nature of the business reflects even now, with the company employing many staff members from the same family. This is something that really stands out for me.” Established in 1894 when Scotsman John Barbour opened the first Barbour store in South Shields marketplace, he began selling oilskins and other garments to shield mariners from the North Sea. Before long, word spread and farmers, labourers and those earning a living by being outdoors looked to Barbour. By 1908, Barbour was a nationwide name and John’s son Malcolm set up the first mail order catalogue. Orders began coming in from as far as Chile, Hong Kong and New Zealand and within the catalogues were jackets, clothing, footwear and accessories. Continuing through the generations, Malcom’s son Duncan was a keen motorcyclist and in 1936, he introduced the first Barbour International motorcycle suit. In 1964, Steve McQueen wore a Barbour International suit as a member of the US team at the 1964 International Six Days Trial (ISDT) in East Germany. The growth of countrywear followed, as Duncan’s son John joined the business the same year. >> Collection

JOYCE FAWCETT BEGAN WORKING AT THE COMPANY IN 1974

<< Responsible for designing Barbour’s iconic unlined Durham Jacket, John sadly died in 1968 and at which point his wife Margaret took over. Becoming a Dame in 2001, Margaret can be credited with the creation of the Bedale, Beaufort and Border wax jackets, after intuitively picking up how popular this style was on the continent. In 1988, Dame Margaret founded the Barbour Trust which is now known as the Barbour Foundation. Supporting charitable causes and community projects primarily in the North East, Dame Margaret is particularly passionate about women’s groups. To date, over £20.3 million has been donated to worthwhile causes. 1998 saw the development of Barbour’s exclusive Classic Tartan by Dame Margaret and daughter Helen, soon followed by the Dress Tartan in 2002. Created alongside tartan specialists Kinloch Anderson, they were based on the Ayrshire District tartan from where the Barbour family had originated in the 13th century. Bringing us up to the present day, Barbour will celebrate their 125th anniversary this year with an Icons Re-Engineered collection to be available from the end of July. Plus, a brand film directed by Antony Crook and produced by the Ridley Scott Creative Group to tell this incredible story. As part of the 125 celebrations, Sir Ridley Scott, who also originates from South Shields, has collaborated with Barbour on the ultimate Director’s jacket for both men and women.

“TESTAMENT TO ALL OF OUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE SUPPORTED US OVER THE YEARS AND TO OUR EMPLOYEES, PAST AND PRESENT WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO OUR SUCCESS.”

Area Visual Merchandiser Colin Brown, whose Barbour journey began in 2011, shares, “what makes me proud of being a part of Barbour’s 125-year history, is the fact I have seen the company grow over the last years and I have essentially played a part in its development. I’m so proud of this brand, I love how we never shy away from our impressive family heritage.” Danielle Kay, Receptionist within the UK Sales Office Department, has been at Barbour since 2014. Within her role, Danielle manages orders for the Royal household staff. She started working in the Factory Shop initially, and when asked what Barbour means to her during downtime too Danielle says, “As a family we love spending our summers camping in the Lakes, so our Barbour wellies and coats always come in handy with our great British weather.” She’s also extremely proud of Barbour winning the Drapers Award in 2016, 2017 and 2018, for Barbour international. As Dame Barbour concludes, “My daughter Helen and I look forward to celebrating with our customers and employees during 2019 and to making this a very special year.”

BEST OF ALL YOU DON’T NEED THE WEALTH OF A MAHARAJAH TO ENJOY THESE RARE GEMS ...

DELHI/NEW DELHI

THE IMPERIAL HOTEL ROOMS FROM £250

In 1931, the government of British India moved from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to a purpose built capital that had been constructed next to the old city of Delhi, the former capital of the Mogul Emperors. Most of the new buildings that made up ‘New Delhi’ were designed by the eminent British architect Sir Edward Lutyens but it was an Indian entrepreneur, S.B.S. Ranjit Singh, who built the luxurious Imperial Hotel to cater for visiting dignitaries. The Imperial is still offering the discerning visitor a truly regal experience and it’s an irony of history that British rule came to an end in this superlative hotel - because it was here that Pandit Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Lord Mountbatten met to discuss their plans for independence. As well as its own place in Indian history, The Imperial is also at the heart of Rajasthan’s so-called ‘Golden Triangle’ of historic cities which, besides Delhi, consists of Agra (home of the Taj Mahal) and Jaipur.

MUMBAI/BOMBAY

THE TAJ MAHAL PALACE HOTEL ROOMS FROM £240

After the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, India’s western port of Bombay, now Mumbai, became the principal point of entry for Britons travelling to the Indian subcontinent and, since 1903, the most notable VIPs have stayed in the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Though the original Taj Mahal lies 800 miles to the north, its namesake is every bit as beautiful as Agra’s iconic tomb and there is a long history of luxurious innovation at the Bombay Taj. The hotel was the first in India to boast electricity, American fans, German elevators, Turkish baths and English butlers. Later the Taj became home to the city’s first licensed bar as well as India’s first all-day restaurant and discotheque. Nowadays the Taj is the perfect base to explore the vast, cosmopolitan metropolis of modern Mumbai, the highlight of which has to be a tour of the world famous ‘Bollywood’ film studios.

THE ELGIN FAIRLAWN HOTEL ROOMS FROM £61

Prior to moving the capital of British India to Delhi the principal seat of the Raj was the Bengali port of Calcutta (now Kolkata) and one of the oldest buildings to date from that time is now a hotel. The Fairlawn was built in 1783, as a private bungalow, by an Englishman named William Ford, and it became a hotel in 1936. In 2018 The Fairlawn was purchased by the Elgin group of luxury hotels and it has a special significance for British actress Felicity Kendal. The star of BBC TV’s classic sitcom, The Good Life, spent several summer holidays here with her theatrical family and her sister Jennifer met her husband, Indian film star Shashi Kapoor, at The Fairlawn. Other famous guests include film producers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, whose 1965 film Shakespeare Wallah was inspired by Jennifer Kendal’s marriage and the life of the sisters’ actor-manager father Geoffrey.

TO ESCAPE THE HEAT OF THE INDIAN SUMMER, THOSE WHO COULD AFFORD TO, RETREATED TO THE HIMALAYAN HILL STATION OF SIMLA…

Before the British government established direct rule in 1858, much of India was governed by the merchant adventurers of the East India Company and the country was divided into three presidencies centred on Bombay, Calcutta and Madras (now Chennai). Like Calcutta, modern Chennai boasts a survivor from those early days in the form of the Taj Connemara Hotel which was built in 1854 and was originally known as The Imperial. The hotel was renamed the Connemara in 1890, to honour the Irish born governor of Madras, Robert Bourke 1st Baron Connemara, and it soon acquired a reputation for being the best hotel in the entire world. The Connemara was leased to the Taj Group in 1974 and its recent refurbishment has propelled this exquisite hotel back to the front rank of India’s historic luxury hotels.

SIMLA/SHIMLA

WOODVILLE PALACE HOTEL ROOMS FROM £44

To escape the heat of the Indian summer, those who could afford to, retreated to the Himalayan hill station of Simla (now Shimla) which lies 220 miles north of Delhi. In 1864, Shimla replaced Rawalpindi as the Raj’s official summer capital and in 1903, a railway was built to make the growing city more accessible to the government’s ever expanding army of officials. Today, travelling the Kalka-Shimla Railway’s 103 tunnels, 800 bridges and 900 curves is regarded as one of the great railway journeys of the world but this can be a long and uncomfortable trip, so when you reach the terminus, treat yourself to a stay at the Woodville Palace Hotel. Once the summer residence of the Raja Rana of Jubbal, this unique heritage hotel is still owned and managed by the Raja’s descendants and each room is decorated with the family’s personal possessions.

AS IT MARKS IN BUSINESS

FAMILY RUN ELECTRICAL FIRM, IS MARKING A MAJOR MILESTONE THIS YEAR AS IT CELEBRATES 60 YEARS IN BUSINESS. Based in Gosforth, Ridley Brothers works in both the commercial and domestic electrical service sectors across Newcastle and the surrounding areas. Founded in 1959 by brothers Thomas and Fred Ridley, the electrical company is now headed up by Fred’s sons David and Andrew Ridley who stepped into the shoes of their father Fred and uncle Thomas to take on existing business whilst developing new areas of work. Working with both businesses and domestic customers, Ridley Brothers offers a wide range of services from general power installations, fire alarm systems and CCTV to lighting installations and general maintenance. Director Andrew Ridley attributes the business’ success on having an unwavering commitment to old-fashioned service whilst embracing new technology. Throughout the years, the team has focussed on adapting to the ever-changing needs of customers, whilst retaining customer care values synonymous with what you would expect from a family firm – friendly, reliability, honesty and going the extra mile. Andrew said: “With 60 years of experience, the company has vast knowledge of the electrical service sector and our ability to adapt and innovate with our customers and the advent of new technologies has ensured that we have remained a successful company in the region. “We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service skills and our reputation has ensured that we regularly welcome repeat custom and new contracts through word of mouth referrals.” Taking on the firm in 2007, Andrew and David recognised a need for introducing new growth areas for the business which has seen the company take on large scale commercial fit-out contracts across the UK. Throughout the years, the company has worked with a number of the region’s independent schools such as Royal Grammar School, Newcastle and Newcastle High School For Girls alongside commercial clients including Lloyds BMW, Cowell’s Garden Centre and Esh Plaza, from ongoing projects to general maintenance. Alongside its commercial work, Ridley Brothers also offers services

to the domestic market which has seen the firm attract customers in Gosforth, Jesmond, Newcastle city centre and beyond. David Ridley, Andrew’s brother and director of Ridley Brothers of Gosforth, said: “Our domestic side of the business has been going for 60 years now and we’ve worked with customers on everything from reactive jobs on fixing faults to full re-wiring and installing new fixtures. “Our dedication to customer service means that we can provide our customers with a friendly experience right in their home. We care about the work we do and always follow up our jobs with a conversation to ensure that the customer is happy with the project.” Moving into 2019, Ridley Brothers intend to continue to build on its many years of success with plans to grow its new properties maintenance division, working for landlords and developers to ensure the electrics are maintained across their property portfolio. With a five-year plan in place, staff growth is also on the agenda as well as implementing new processes to move into a paper free working environment. Andrew added: “We’ve already been working on some exciting new contracts this year which have exposed us to more commercial customers whilst our residential side remains consistently steady. “We’re well known in residential areas such as Gosforth, Jesmond and the city centre but it’s our aim now to continue to spread the word of Ridley Brothers in Newcastle’s surrounding areas as well as growing our firm in the business market. “We’re now looking to expand our current workforce by employing experienced electricians which will enable us to take on even more contracts as we grow into our seventh decade in business. It’s an exciting time for the firm and I’m looking forward to the next ten years.”

THIS AUGUST, THE NORTH EAST WILL HOST THE

WORLD TRANSPLANT GAMES

TO HIGHLIGHT THE BENEFITS OF TRANSPLANT SURGERY IN THE FIGHT AGAINST LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS…

GATESHEAD’S ICONIC INTERNATIONAL STADIUM WILL BE THE LOCATION FOR THE TRACK AND FIELD EVENTS BUT THIS IS NOT THE ONLY FIRST CLASS SPORTING ARENA BEING UTILISED BY THE WTG.

It may come as a surprise to some that Newcastle is one of the word’s leading centres of excellence for organ transplants. The techniques pioneered at the city’s Freeman Hospital include the first baby to receive a transplanted heart and the first successful single and double lung transplants. As a result of these and many other ground-breaking transplant operations, the Freeman was chosen as the location of Britain’s Institute of Transplantation and this world class facility opened its doors in 2011. Apart from leading the world in organ transplants, Newcastle and Gateshead are probably best known as centres of sporting excellence. Never mind the fact that the legendary ‘Magpies’ and ‘Black Cats’ have failed to win silverware on the football field in recent years, Newcastle is the home of the Eagles, Britain’s most successful basketball team, and the annual Great North Run has helped spread the fun-running phenomenon around the globe. With so much important medical and sporting history being made in our region, the North East has always been the natural choice to host the World Transplant Games and this year the dream has become a reality. The first dedicated events for transplant patients took place in Portsmouth in 1978 and from these humble beginnings the World Transplant Games has become a truly global sporting occasion. Like the Olympics and Paralympics, different cities around the world host either summer or winter versions of the WTG, which alternate each year, and it’s the summer games that will be held at venues across the North East from the 17th to the 24th of August 2019. Gateshead’s iconic International Stadium will be the location for the track and field events but this is not the only first class sporting arena being utilised by the WTG. The golf tournaments will be staged at the magnificent Close House Golf Resort in the Tyne Valley and swimming will be staged at the Sunderland Aquatic Centre. Newcastle’s Northumberland Club will host the

racket sports and athletes will also have access to Northumbria University’s £30 million Sports Central complex. The full programme will include 10km, 20km and 30km cycle races as well as archery, badminton and squash. There will also be a number of events that don’t feature on the usual Olympic programme such as ten-pin bowling, darts and petanque. These ‘minority’ sports and the mainstream events are expected to attract over 3,000 athletes from more than 60 countries, which means staging the WTG is a massive undertaking. Leading the partnership responsible for bringing the WTG to the North East is the NewcastleGateshead Initiative who have been working closely with the World Transplant Games Federation, the event’s governing body, and chief sponsors Westfield Health to deliver the best games yet. Graham Wylie CBE, Chair of the World Transplant Games 2019 Local Organising Committee, said: “We will be staging an exciting, international sporting event at world class venues and showcasing the best that the region has to offer. The NewcastleGateshead Games will shine a spotlight on transplant surgery, organ donation and the need for everyone to share their wishes with family. There are around 6,080 people on the transplant waiting list currently in the UK. Organ failure can affect us all regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity and the issue of organ donation can impact all our lives. That’s a compelling reason for businesses and communities to get behind the Games and pledge their support in whatever way they can.” This brings us very neatly to how you too can get involved. With less than four months to go, the Games still needs volunteers to help with accommodation and hospitality; sports events and venues; marketing and PR; transport and logistics and the parallel cultural programme. There’s also a full range of sponsorship packages for businesses ranging from entering a company team in the Gift of Life Run (18th August) to sponsoring an individual country or sport.

Be sure to sign up for the special fundraising afternoon tea party at the NewcastleGateshead Hilton Hotel 1pm-5.30pm Friday 19th July. Tickets are £35 and available from janet.worldtransplantgames@gmail.com For more information on the Games, organ donation and to find out how you can get involved in volunteering and fundraising go to: worldtransplantgames.org

NEIL GORDON TALKS TO NIGEL HARTLEY…

A DIRECTOR OF THE

WORLD WHEEL COMPANY

ABOUT NEWCASTLE’S REVOLUTIONARY NEW VISITOR ATTRACTION…

By the time you read this, Newcastle City Council should have made a final decision regarding the ‘Whey Aye’ wheel and ‘Giants on the Quayside’ development planned for the old Spiller’s site on Newcastle’s eastern quayside. When built, this extraordinary visitor attraction will combine Europe’s largest observation wheel (which is 5 metres taller than the London Eye) with a range of cuttingedge leisure and sports facilities. The developers, Newcastle based World Wheel Company, promise that their £100 million investment will bring more than 800 new jobs and around 700,000 new visitors to a hitherto neglected brownfield site, and as far as cold hard cash is concerned, these figures translate into £108 million in new salaried income over 20 years and £100 million in inward tourism spend. However, will the reality match the World Wheel Company’s confident predictions? To answer this question, I spoke to Nigel Hartley, director of the World Wheel Company, and my first question is will interest in the development be sustainable over the long term?

34

…THEIR £100 MILLION INVESTMENT WILL BRING MORE THAN 800 NEW JOBS AND AROUND 700,000 NEW VISITORS…

“THE KEY TO THE ENTIRE DEVELOPMENT IS NOT MERELY BUILDING SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE WILL LOVE BUT SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH…

“The key to the entire development is not merely building something that people will love but something that people will fall in love with and I think the best example of what I mean is the Angel of the North. There was considerable opposition to that project when it was launched but now the Angel is as much a part of the North East landscape as the Tyne Bridge and Hadrian’s Wall. We hope that the Whey Aye and the rest of the Giant’s on the Quayside development will enjoy a similar career,” Nigel replies. There is no denying that he makes an excellent point about the Angel of the North, and it certainly has become an internationally recognised symbol of our region. So, as the 140m Whey Aye will be seven times taller Anthony Gormley’s most famous work, can we expect it to have seven times the global impact? “That would be the ideal result and I’m delighted to say that our initial press releases about the wheel were picked up by news agencies from Iran to Australia and Iceland to China. All this helps put Newcastle and the wider Tyneside area on the global map, which is vitally important for maximising the North East’s potential for tourists and international students. That said, we haven’t forgotten that the long-term success of the project depends on local people using the bars, restaurants, leisure facilities and sports clubs,” says Nigel. >>

WE’RE ALSO INSTALLING SOME GROUNDBREAKING SPORTS AND LEISURE FACILITIES THAT WILL CREATE A YEAR-ROUND, ALL WEATHER DESTINATION.” Collection

35

<< I heartily concur that tourism should only ever be one element of any plan to regenerate a former industrial site and, once again, Nigel is offering some revolutionary ideas about how to attract Tyneside residents to the development. “We don’t want to fill the site with yet more chain bars and restaurants. Instead we’re approaching North East based food and drink businesses and offering them the chance to open an additional site that will complement, rather than replace, their existing locations. We will also keep entry fees to the Whey Aye reasonable and retain control of lets so we’ll be able to ensure that there’s always a range of dining options available, from fast food to high end dining. We’re also installing some ground-breaking sports and leisure facilities that will create a year-round, all weather destination.” The list of planned attractions looks extremely impressive and include such technological innovations as a 700 sqm screen, a virtual reality golf course and an e-gaming suite. “E-gaming is huge amongst the under 30s and our facilities will allow gamers to play in a social, rather than solitary, setting. Similarly, our VR golf course will allow people to play as part of a night out whilst enjoying food and drink brought directly to their table,” Nigel adds. As a parent of two keen gamers, I’m delighted that the World Wheel Company is planning something that will persuade them to come out of their bedrooms and into the real world! But, joking apart, the Giants on the Quayside will bring benefits to both old and young people in many more ways than a good night out. As Nigel explains: “We don’t want Giants on the Quayside to be part of the zerohours contract, ‘gig economy’. Instead, we want a broad spectrum of proper jobs, including a number of apprenticeships, so we’re talking to local colleges about how they can tailor their courses to our needs. We’ve also been working with Newcastle architects Ryders to ensure that the entire development connects the history of the surrounding area. For example, the exterior facades

36

Collection

WE WANT A BROAD SPECTRUM OF PROPER JOBS, INCLUDING A NUMBER OF APPRENTICESHIPS

feature lots of Cor-Ten weathering steel, which is designed to acquire a rust coloured patina, and this will echo the great days of shipbuilding on Tyneside. This theme extends inside to things like ‘The Mesh’ which is another giant screen on which we can project images that reflect the area’s social history. Accordingly, we’re inviting local residents to send photos of family members who lived and worked on Tyneside in the past.” The Mesh is certainly a fitting tribute to the men and women who put the North East at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and I for one believe that the Whey Aye and Giants on the Quayside will reaffirm our region’s reputation for innovation. Let’s hope Newcastle’s planners think the same.

FOLLOWING THE INCREDIBLE SUCCESS OF THE GREAT NORTH SNOWDOGS ART TRAIL OF 2016, THIS YEAR ST OSWALD’S HOSPICE ARE BACK WITH THEIR BRILLIANT…

REPORTS HELEN WILSON-BEEVERS. 50 individually decorated statues from the much-loved popular storybook Elmer the Elephant will be positioned at key points across Tyne and Wear, and marking the 11-week event, some of the region’s biggest names have signed up to sponsor one. Many of these businesses were previously involved with the Great North Snowdogs trail, a campaign which attracted more than 676,000 people, boosted the region’s economy by over £16.5 million and, raised an enormous £376,000 for the hospice’s children and young adult’s services. Once again teaming up with event partners Wild in Art and Andersen Press, the hospice will reveal their bright and interactive trail spanning across the streets, parks and public spaces of Tyne and Wear. Running from 21st August until 1st November, the

RUNNING FROM 21ST AUGUST UNTIL 1ST NOVEMBER, THE EVENT IS EXPECTED TO ATTRACT THOUSANDS OF VISITORS TO THE REGION…

event is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the region, contribute financially to our local economy, and raise vital funds for St Oswald’s Children’s Hospice. As St Oswald’s Hospice explains, “Elmer’s Great North Parade is a fantastic, inspiring and unique initiative, for a truly amazing cause. It’s something that we are extremely proud to be organising, and we hope the people of the north east and beyond really get behind it and enjoy it. To date, all 115 little Elmers have been adopted by local schools. Large sculptures will be sponsored during the trail and painted by artists, while smaller ones are all set for school and youth group decoration. Louise Hunter, Director of Corporate Affairs at Northumbrian Water Group explains their involvement as a sponsor; “After having such a fantastic experience with the Snowdogs trail, for Northumbrian Water it was a no-brainer to get involved again. We’ve sponsored a full-sized Elmer statue and are really excited about Elmer’s Great North Parade.” Louise continues, “There are many advantages for getting on board as a sponsor. We became immersed in a fantastic hub of media activity encouraging families to get out and about in our beautiful region, and from a brand perspective, the word is spread far and wide. Also, we were truly heartened by how enthused our Northumbrian Water employees were by the scheme. Our team

showed such a fondness for the Snowdogs, and after our sponsorship was promoted internally, the trail became an event for our employees’ own families to be in involved with too. This is something we’ve since heard of as being the case for other companies as well.” She concludes, “Finally, and most importantly, Elmer’s Great North Parade is a huge opportunity to back a fantastic and much-valued North East charity. Like many companies around the region, we have employees and their families who have been helped by St Oswald’s, so we are passionate about lending our support to this inspirational fund-raising extravaganza. Whether you’ve supported the hospice in the past or not, based on employee engagement, brand goodwill and a fabulous chance to boost this crucial cause, I’d really recommend becoming a sponsor if you haven’t already”. With many of these bright and colourful statues to be displayed near Metro stations, Tyne and Wear Metro, who are presenting partners for Elmer’s Great North Parade, hope the trail will offer a valuable incentive to explore the region. Huw Lewis, Customer Services Director of Nexus (who own Tyne and Wear Metro), explains that they’ve signed up as sponsors for the second time “following some amazing feedback” in which “people said they loved the fact the Metro made it easy to enjoy the trail and explore old and new places with their families across the communities we serve”. Huw also highlights, “As well as supporting a fantastic good cause for the whole region, we helped inspire thousands of new journeys, which is why we had no hesitation in joining Elmer’s Great North Parade.

After the trail ends, all sculptures will be displayed together for one final time at Newcastle Racecourse. This farewell weekend is set to take place on 9th-10th November and tickets are on sale soon. The small sculptures shall then be returned to their schools or groups to keep forever, while larger Elmers will be sold on at auction. Held at Sage Gateshead on Tuesday 12th November, everyone is welcome to bid and all profits support the work of St Oswald’s Children’s Hospice. And if you can’twait until the trail starts, St Oswald’s Hospice are also organising a family fun day. Hosted by Metro Radio’s Steve & Karen at Saltwell Park in Gateshead on Saturday 6th July from 10am-4pm, enjoy a parade around the park, family entertainment, rides and much more. Plus, be in with a chance of winning a large Elmer sculpture, by buying a raffle ticket at the bargain price of £1.

HAS REPORTED A STRONG FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR, BOOSTED BY BUOYANT DEMAND FROM THE PRIVATE RENTAL SECTOR. Gail McLean, Regional Lettings Manager, is championing her expanding team as it bucks the trend in a market which has been subject to unprecedented change in legislation and criticism from government and national press. “We always place a huge importance on the legal requirements and vast responsibilities of being a lettings operator. For us, it’s not just about securing a fast let but being an informed and knowledgeable agent, who landlords can trust. This is testament to the fact that we still have many landlords on our books from the inception of the lettings division over 17 years ago”. The very recent Tenant Fee Ban, which is dated 1st June 2019, has been met somewhat with panic and even despair by agents throughout the country, however Gail and her experienced team have been successfully planning and implementing change over the past 18 months so it is met with a positive mindset and an understanding that this is what the Government believe will assist the national housing crisis. “We are actually finding that demand is increasing due to the ability for tenants to move more freely and this has created an increase in potential rental yield for many of our landlords, particularly in the city centre”, comments Gail. “For instance, some of the most popular developments we offer are currently sitting between 6-7% yield, with capital value also improving due to the fantastic regeneration we are seeing on our city’s skyline”. Another improving factor in the market is the speed at which this skilled team are able to convert initial interest in the properties they are offering for let. “Our average time between listing and move ins has dropped over the past six months from five weeks to a matter of days, which is just amazing and is assisted by the unique marketing tools we use in order to really showcase our properties. We focus on enticing tenants to view very quickly so they don’t miss out on an opportunity”, comments Gail. “Also, the average number of viewings prior to an offer has drastically reduced from between 15 and 20 to just three per property, showing the hard work and dedication we are putting in to not only presenting these homes in the best light but, more

…THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION WE ARE PUTTING IN TO NOT ONLY PRESENTING THESE HOMES IN THE BEST LIGHT BUT, MORE IMPORTANTLY, SOURCING THE RIGHT TENANTS FOR OUR LANDLORDS.”

importantly, sourcing the right tenants for our landlords.” Another differentiating factor when it comes to the regional lettings division is certainly the pull from a national, and often international, market. “At the moment, around 80% of our customer base is outside of the North East. This is a positive reflection on the North East business sector and the region’s appeal as somewhere to bring up families and build communities.” As well as a buoyant property market, now is a good time to let out property because the demand is so high and rental prices have risen. “We have met with many first-time landlords looking to enter the market, due to bank interest rates remaining low and pension funds less fruitful”, comments Gail. “Property investment is certainly a sound option and we work extremely well with our experienced sales teams regionwide, as well as our new homes and professional consultancy divisions, in order to attract national and global investors to our stock and retain them as loyal landlords”. Gail has noted prices between 10 and 20 percent up on this time last year, which is staggering given the apparent ‘doom and gloom’ over the impending legislation and ongoing uncertainty over Brexit. More and more private landlords now also heavily rely on a bespoke, fully managed service which is headed personally by Gail and provides significant peace of mind. “Our service is highly personalised and tailored to a landlord’s specific needs. The market and the myriad of legal changes across all topics from energy efficiency, tax reliefs and wear and tear allowance to stamp duty and tenant fee changes, can be highly confusing. We’re here to help guide and support landlords through this and ensure their property is let appropriately in every aspect.”

We are proud of the extensive number of houses we let on a weekly basis, yet due to exceptionally high demand, stock levels constantly run low. Sanderson Young manage over 100 properties on a daily basis and some of those lets are shown below and on the following pages. We require at least 4-5 new landlords per week to satisfy the demand for increasing numbers of tenants, who often are of a very high quality and from blue chip companies, coming to Sanderson Young first due to our reputation for quality homes kept to a high standard. If you are a landlord looking for an experienced property manager with extensive connections throughout the business sectors, please give me a call. We would be delighted to help rent your property within a very short period of time, at the best price possible. I am particularly proud that over 50% of my landlords have seen significant rent increases due to the economics of the current market. Are you letting your portfolio at the right price? Please give me a ring to discuss.

THIS APPARENT CONTRADICTION IN TERMS SIMPLY MEANS THAT THERE IS VIRTUALLY

TO THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT MANSIONS, SUPERYACHTS AND HYPERCARS CAN COMMAND IF THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH, AND PREFERABLY EXCLUSIVE.

…THE LATEST

BUGATTI, WHICH WAS IMMEDIATELY SNAPPED UP FOR £14.4 MILLION, MAKING IT THE MOST EXPENSIVE CAR EVER MADE.

The case is aptly illustrated by the introduction of the latest Bugatti, which was immediately snapped up for £14.4 million, making it the most expensive car ever made. Crazy? Not necessarily. Called the Bugatti Voiture Noire, it could become the ultimate collector’s car and worth many times its initial purchase price. Ralph Lauren is reported to have refused an offer of £75 million for his pre-war Bugatti that was considered to be the Voiture Noire of its day. The 21st-century version heralds the arrival of the true hypercar that renders mere supercars also-rans at a time when a remarkable number of people appear to have an astonishing amount of money. >>

<< Sir Phillip Green’s mega yacht Lionheart costing £115 million is eclipsed by that of Roman Abramovich costing three times as much, which in turn is dwarfed by that of the Emir of Dubai, and so it goes on. The most expensive six-bedroom mansion in the North East’s stockbroker belt of Darras Hall costs about £5 million, yet a flat in London’s Knightsbridge recently sold for £140 million, albeit in the form of a luxurious penthouse with fabulous views. Personal fortunes of billions rather than mere millions mean that so-called supercars costing only hundreds of thousands of pounds and incapable of topping 200mph are simply no longer suited to the aspirations of the hyper-rich. Loosely based on the Bugatti Chiron, the Voiture Noire boasts an eight-litre 16-cylinder engine with four turbochargers to generate an almost unimaginable 1500bhp of power. At a time when environmentally-friendly Swedish car company Volvo is hoping to set a trend by electronically limiting the top speed of all of its new vehicles to 112mph, the Italian Bugatti’s limiter is set at 236mph. However, this can easily be overridden to boost the top speed to

260mph, simply by pressing a dashboard switch of consent by the driver. This, then is what constitutes a hypercar and differentiates it from the sort of 155mph supercars that are increasingly to be seen parked outside Sainsbury’s at weekends. Fellow Italian Ferrari has just introduced one too, in the sleek guise of the F8 Triturbo, which rockets from standstill to 60mph in a neck-jerking 2.9 seconds and ultimately on to a top speed in excess of 210mph. If that is not up to hypercar standards, there is the new Ferrari P80/C, which is the closest you are likely to find to a 2019 Formula One racing car. However, it is not just the Italians who are cashing in on demand for mega-expensive motoring machines, as illustrated by the latest British Aston Martin. The company has just released its new Valkyrie model, with every one of the limited-run of 150 cars immediately snapped up for

between £2 million and £3 million, depending upon the buyer’s preferred specification. Powered by a 6.5-litre V12 engine plus an electric motor, Aston boss Andy Palmer says: “This is the most luxurious and quickest car in its class and can lap Silverstone circuit quicker than a Formula One racing car.” Among the extra-cost options for the Valkyrie is an ostentatiously-named Gold Pack, comprising 24-carat gold leaf exterior livery for the sides and bonnet, gold-plated wing badges, gold anodised interior jewellery and even a gold anodised oil filler cap.

THE 1963

FERRARI 250 GTO

WAS ONE OF JUST 36 BUILT AND TURNED OUT TO BE THE RICH OWNER’S BEST INVESTMENT WITH A PRICE TAG AT AUCTION LAST YEAR OF £53 MILLION.

The Valkyrie is to be followed in 2021 by yet another new British Aston Martin hypercar. It comes in the sleek shape of a costly creation currently code-named RB 003, with a twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine and £1 million price tag. Again, there will be a limited production run in order to guarantee exclusivity, this time just 500 cars at a cool £1 million, each of which will be spoken-for long before its arrival. Just a couple of years ago we thought prices had reached their zenith when the world’s most prestigious car company introduced a model costing £10 million. The Rolls-Royce Sweptail took craftsmen four years to build by hand and was sold overnight. However, all of these mega-expensive motors are overshadowed by the world’s costliest car, which was built in the swinging sixties before the word hypercar had been thought of. The 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO was one of just 36 built and turned out to be the rich owner’s best investment with a price tag at auction last year of £53 million. Yet with a top speed of a mere 174mph it would only just scrape in as a supercar by today’s standards, and certainly not a hypercar. Collection

SEASONAL INTERIOR TRENDS FOR

INCLUDE STATEMENT PIECES, BRIGHT COLOURS AND BESPOKE TOUCHES. HELEN WILSON-BEEVERS SPOKE TO

JEN BERNARD,

FOUNDER AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF AWARD-WINNING LUXURY INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO, BERNARD INTERIORS. As explained by Jen, “We visit the international interior design shows throughout the year, every year, to meet new suppliers from around the world and to keep an eye on trends.” “One of the most influential design shows is Maison & Objet which is held in Paris in January and September. Maison is always exciting, fun, a real feast for anyone involved in design.” When asked how to add trends into our own space, Jen’s top tip is to “Have a look around your home first. Maybe things just need to be rearranged to change the accent. Surround yourself with things you love and you can’t go wrong. If you like your current interior scheme, it’s simple to give it a refresh by including a nod to new trends. Maybe a change of cushions to provide new colour, pattern or texture, or you could add a rug or plants.”

“HAVE A LOOK AROUND YOUR HOME FIRST. MAYBE THINGS JUST NEED TO BE REARRANGED TO CHANGE THE ACCENT…

Bernard Interiors have an approach which focuses on achieving their client’s vision whilst using impeccable attention to detail. Plus, inspiration is gathered from the history of a property, location surroundings and current design trends. To get a feel for current trends and the inspiration behind their own design style, Jen shares a recent project Bernard Interiors have worked on. Within this venture, the client’s love of fashion and travel were blended in with the practicalities of busy family life, ensuring a bespoke and much-loved home. A listed building located in Glasgow’s sought-after Park District, the property has beautiful views across Kelvingrove Park and the city. Combined with a 9,700 square foot floor area spread across five storeys, this structure was set to be a grand and exciting renovation from the start. As the majestic Victorian town house’s original period features were expertly restored, the property’s personality came to life. Having been derelict for over five years, its most recent use was as office space. Working alongside a developer for three years, planning permission was granted to convert the beautiful building back to residential use. The layout was then carefully reconfigured and renovation requiring specialist craftsmen began. Bespoke joinery was used throughout, for example for the fitting of new

Additionally, large statement features include: antiqued mirror panels from floor to ceiling in the hall, and a show-stopping 12 metre chandelier in the stairwell. This magnificent chandelier was commissioned from a light designer in London, and boasts thousands of smoked Swarovski crystals, all individually applied on site by hand, using scaffolding. Shades of mustard, coral and baby-blue are featured within the open plan living space, whilst Slim Aarons photography exudes glamour in the snug. Bespoke banana leaf vinyl wallpaper in the laundry room, ensures every inch of this project is chic, stylish and functional. Finally, the piece de resistance is the dressing room of the master suite. Showcasing a crystal chandelier, large coral velvet stool, leopard print chair and shagreen leather upholstered wardrobes, with chic bone handles. In the bathroom, shades of peach and gold complement a bespoke mirrored cabinet complete with crystal handles. An award-winning project, the results are luxurious, striking and decadent. There was a significant investment undertaken for excellent quality and highly skilled craftsmanship, and this shines through. Jen notes, “Although several current trends can be seen in this residence the underlying design is timeless. The high quality of the

new features and fittings matches the restored historic features. There’s a harmonious mix of styles which makes for a comfortable and characterful space where our client can relax and entertain.” An extremely stylish project combining trends, functionality and personal taste, as well as classic chic, key themes within this Bernard Interiors renovation can be used to illustrate upcoming design inspiration. JOIN US AS WE SPREAD THE WORD OF TWO VITAL CAUSES WITH A HEARTFELT CONNECTION TO OUR REGION, AS REPORTED BY HELEN WILSON-BEEVERS. OLIVER YOUNG FUNDRAISES FOR ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY

DAFT AS A BRUSH CANCER PATIENT CARE

Oliver Young is on a mission to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, after sadly seeing first-hand the huge impact of this horrific disease. Oliver’s granddad was diagnosed in 2015, and the family have since watched his health decline to the point that he now lives in a care home. Requiring support for undertaking simple daily tasks, Oliver’s grandad has, in turn, inspired the entire family to rally awareness and vital funds. Taking part in his first Great North Run on 8th September, Oliver is aiming to complete the run in under two hours and has a fundraising target of £500. The 39th year that this iconic North East event has taken place, Oliver sees no better opportunity to raise both awareness and funds for a crucial charity. The Alzheimer’s Society works at spreading awareness of this disease far and wide, as well as changing perceptions and raising much-needed money. Funds also go towards research into Alzheimer’s which aims to understand the underlying cause of the condition while improving diagnosis and care of patients. Plus, they are always fighting to find a cure and prevent dementia. The most common cause of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease tends to develop after the age of 65, but in some cases, early-onset can occur. According to the

Alzheimer’s Society, in the UK there are currently over 40, 000 people under 65 with some form of dementia, and there are about twice as many women as men over the age of 65 with Alzheimer’s. There are more than 520,000 in the UK with Alzheimer’s disease, indicating just how widespread the condition is.

Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care offers free transport for cancer patients undergoing outpatient treatment within the region. Transporting almost 40,000 patients each year, the charity has a team of over 350 dedicated volunteers and 30 tailored ambulances. Based in Gosforth, Daft as a Brush transports children to the Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI, and adults across to the Freeman Hospital. A valued regional resource which makes a huge difference both to families and individuals alike, Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care was established in the 1980s, with the brush logo now a well-known visual throughout the North East. Relying on amazing volunteers, Daft as a Brush are always looking for additional team members to help. If you’d like to lend your time and support, do check out the website. Daft as a Brush founder Brian Burnie is going one step further (quite literally) spreading the word nationwide, by walking the entire coastal path of Great Britain and Ireland over two years. This adventure will span across Northumberland, Scotland, Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside, North Wales and from Dublin to Belfast.

Living in a converted double decker bus named Bluebell alongside his wife Cheryl while they continue their amazing journey, to date Brian has walked over 3,200 miles. Daily walks of up to 20 miles a day are particularly gruelling for Brian, as he’s also dealing with Parkinson’s Disease. A testament to his determination and passion for the cause, he’s completely focused on continuing the epic charity walk, highlighting this vital need for cancer patient transport. Overall, Brian’s vision is to create one million free cancer patient journeys on his 7,000 mile walk. The dream starting to become a reality, he’s preparing to tackle 2,000 miles in Ireland before returning to the North East for another 2,000 miles in late 2020.

Most of us will know a family touched by the disease, and its prognosis is a heart-breaking decline. If you’d like to donate, head over to justgiving.com/fundraising/oliver-young2 where Oliver will also update supporters.
