COLLECTION

Welcome to the Autumn/Winter issue of the Sanderson Young biannual magazine. I am delighted to reflect on the last six months and look forward to the future with renewed optimism and pride in my expert team of colleagues, who have helped achieve so much for so many of our clients this year.

T

he housing market has finally turned and is very clearly recovering. The recovery will be gradual and is varied throughout the region, between types of housing, location and value ranges. One answer does not fit all questions within the housing market and we have learned very clearly this year the need to give individual expert advice to our clients, tailored to their own personal situation. All of our key performance indicators tell us that this year’s trading period has increased between 10 and 22 per cent within the business areas. We are listing more houses and we are achieving greater viewings. The viewings are converting more quickly to sales and less of these sales are falling through. Our exchange units and values are increasing. I am particularly proud of the way in which the firm has seen related business needs increase, with specialised advice on mortgages securing the right product for your particular situation and ensuring that you approach the right building society or bank to maximise the chance of you being accepted and gaining the best possible deal for your circumstances. This magazine represents one of the many tools we as a company use to promote our properties and to ensure our clients receive the maximise exposure within the marketplace. 22,000 are printed and circulated to the region’s best hotels and restaurants and individually through 20,500 doors throughout the region. I am often flattered by the number of estate agents who copy the styling of Sanderson Young, the brand look and its design, but make no mistake, branding is not just superficial. The company has worked extremely hard over many years to earn their reputation and even throughout the recession we kept our image high, retained our promotion and worked extremely hard for our clients to achieve

success. The people within my business have worked in estate agency for many years and it is the strength of their knowledge, the quality of their negotiation and the vision of their foresight that keeps sales together and enables our clients to move, whether the house be purchased or rented. I thank my colleagues for their tremendous hard work and look forward to seeing their dedication and motivation bring further success to many clients over the next few years. The value of people’s homes continues to be the most contentious of all questions being asked at this current time and I still believe that there is at least 5 to 10 per cent variance between potential values that can be achieved for everyone’s home and this is a considerable variance and a large sum of money to gamble when choosing your estate agent. Valuations should be based on factual sales and not asking prices. Agents should be aware of the number of buyers they have at your price level, the motivation of those buyers and their inclination to move within the timescale you require. We have now seen clear value increases in certain hotspots within the region, especially within the £200,000 to £400,000 price levels, where demand for Edwardian terraces, 1930s semis and good value homes has exceeded supply and led to price rises. Other areas of the market are equally improving and our rare! brand has seen clear signs of increased demand for houses over £1 Million in value and where there have been some tremendous good value sales in recent times. Market confidence is improving and potential buyers hanging back in rented accommodation are urged to reconsider quickly and not to miss out on the quality homes that are available at this current time. Our new homes partners have also seen tremendous success in 2013, with Cussins Homes showcasing The Limes in Alnwick, where Jabin Cussins and his team

have created a significant impact on this market town and where locals understand the quality of the site, where completions will start in late December 2013. We are working with many other regional builders to achieve their success and create added value to their brands. We very much welcome the regeneration of the Ouseburn Valley and the exciting plans for The Malings, which will be announced soon. Our Lettings Department continues to grow, mainly due to the quality of service available from the luxury and mid-price levels, where increasing numbers of landlords and tenants are recognising the skill of Sanderson Young to be able to place the right quality people in their homes. There is no doubt that even as market confidence improves the letting and renting of homes within the region will continue to be a key part of our business. My forecast for the next 6 to 12 months sees a further increase in the volume of purchasers and the early signs of shortages in stock, which may materialise due to the increased demand. I do not expect rapid price increases, but we will see inflation in the popular residential areas of the region and with interest rates continuing to remain low and with fabulous mortgage products available, there could not be a better time to invest in the housing market. My experienced and dedicated team of experts are at hand to help you with all of your enquiries and if I can assist in any way please do not hesitate to contact me on the email below. I wish all the region’s businesses prosperity, success and renewed confidence over the months to come. With my very best wishes. Janet Hopkinson - Operations Director

Reflecting on another year of positive recovery, we are so encouraged by the levels of new buyers coming to the marketplace, and the fantastic sales we have seen across all price points and all offices, indicating that the market is showing tentative improvement. Improved lending has facilitated moves for a great deal of buyers, however those who have good prospects but have yet managed to break free from a property in negative or very little equity will also benefit coming into 2014. For the first time, the Government will aid the second homes market with incentives intended to lower the cost of 95% mortgages, similar to the current Help to Buy scheme, which since its launch in January, has resulted in excellent success. Due to the improved confidence and activity in both the sales and lettings markets, I am delighted to announce that Sanderson Young have been on a

renewedoptimism Government schemes and positive comments from the new governor of The Bank of England continue to assist with growth in the new homes market. At Sanderson Young we have seen the results of this generate good enquiry levels for new homes and this has resulted in continued positive signs from the house builders and a renewed appetite for development land. Recent launches of new developments have been helped by the Help to Buy scheme which has aided buyers who had previously struggled to get on to the property ladder. In addition, our financial services team are becoming increasingly experienced in dealing with this scheme. Forward guidance from the Bank of England had an immediate effect on the markets which resulted in downward pressure on mortgage rates. Whilst good

recruitment drive over the past six months and have thoroughly strengthened our already expert team in order to continue to provide our clients with exceptional service and premium prices. Each of our departments has been strengthened in order to build our collective team of some of the most experienced agents in the region. As well as the second homes market, our expert staff continue to support new build developers throughout the region, showing that the strength of our brand and wealth of experience is a great asset to not only individual sellers but major house builders. As our company thrives in this improving market, we would be delighted to help all potential clients with a move in the New Year, and look forward to helping future buyers and tenants find their dream home. tel 0191 2233500 or janet.hopkinson@sandersonyoung.co.uk

Max Busser has long had a fascination with all things mechanical. He is, after all, founder of the independent Swiss watchmakers MB&F, creators of some of the world’s most outlandish, complex and collectible timepieces. 16 | collection

ut when he opened an art gallery in Geneva last year to celebrate similar mechanical arts it wasn’t for nothing that it came with a punning name: the M.A.D. Gallery Mechanical Art Devices, yes, but also a reflection perhaps of wider opinion. “Mechanical devices are not considered art simply because the art world is snobbish,” says Busser. “Even very knowledgable art collectors I know have looked at what we have brought together, then looked at me puzzled and have said ‘but that’s not art’. “If the art world doesn’t consider it art, it’s hard for the consumer to. But the fact is that too much value in contemporary art is in the idea over the craftsmanship now. In what we present, craft is all important. And in the human talent behind it, in the hundreds of hours of work that has gone into it, there is a clear measure of value.” Indeed, the art on display in the M.A.D. Gallery blurs the distinction between functionality and aesthetics, purpose and surface, craft and meaning in ways that many are finding more provocative than even Busser expected. Many pieces have sold - among them, the “Jules Verne meets Dune” hand-made lights by ex sci-fi designer Frank Buchwald; the ‘Transformer’ sculptures of Chinese artist Xia Heng, which move mechanically; the clapping and tapping machines of British art collective Laiking Land, through to the wind-up

children’s cars created by Nika Zupanc, the motorised lights of Jake (son of Sir James) Dyson and the machine photography of Denis Hayoun. All, alongside MB&F’s own watches. “I used to assemble and dismantle stuff when I was a kid but I’m not the kind of guy who tinkers with cars at the weekend,” says Busser of his own watch designs. “I think taking things apart was just one way not to go nuts. I ended up training as an engineer - extremely revered work in my family - but it was all equations. In fact, I only rediscovered any interest in it when I found watchmaking. I honestly think that saved my life.” It certainly made a career: first with Jaeger Le Coultre and then as MD of Harry Winston Watches - >>

<< which, via 17 hour days, an ulcer and “some of the worst years of my life”, he turned from a virtually bankrupt US$8m company into an US$80m one, creating a watch manufacture and launching the acclaimed Opus series along the way. But it is his watch company, MB&F, and its cultish creations - like the seemingly jet-engined, futuristic HM4 or the pioneering balance wheel-less, revivalist Legacy Machine No.1 - that Busser has really turned heads. “I had what Steve Jobs called ‘reality distortion complex’, when you’re so lost in the dream of what you’re doing, you don’t for a second think it might not happen,” he says. “After all, watches and other things

we buy don’t have to be practical, and if they’re not practical they can be artistic - and if they are artistic, why bother chasing ideas of practicality, as so much watch design does? “Our watches are celebrated as small pieces of kinetic art that also happen to tell the time. And the more I looked into it the more I found an under-valued parallel world of art works that just happen to, for example, project light, or run on wheels. In part the gallery is about supporting these independent artist-makers, backing the underdogs. But it’s also to raise awareness of the artistry and craft in machinery.” Might the recession’s refocusing on hand-crafts and new considerations of the real value of things be

encouraging more of us to react similarly to the intricacy and expertise with which some products are made? Might influential books the likes of Matthew Crawford’s ‘The Case for Working With Your Hands: Or Why Office Work is Bad For Us and Fixing Things Feels Good’ be a sign of growing interest in the beauty of engineering and pleasures of making? Unfortunately, Busser is pessimistic. While the internet may have provided more niche skills and unknown makers with a new platform, in the digital age the mechanical is more than ever under-rated, he says. “Just 20 years ago people who bought mechanical watches, for example, tended to have a real connoisseur understanding of and love for how they worked,” says Busser. “Now, like so many supposedly crafted products, they are bought primarily as status items. As a society we don’t know how to use our hands anymore. We set white collar careers above blue collar jobs, and with that have lost many of the craft skills. And yet real, deeply human genius lies in all those craft and manufacturing skills.”

A PLACE IN THE Hay & Kilner has a team of expert solicitors who provide advice to rural clients seeking to buy property. This may be the purchase of a home, business premises, a farm or a development site.

O

ur rural team, in particular, have been very busy advising clients who own or are looking to buy or develop property in the countryside. Over the summer we saw an increase in the sale of residential properties and, talking to local developers, there has been renewed interest in the conversion and renovation of rural property. Whilst some properties are purchased as a main residence, there are a significant number which are being bought as investment opportunities. These properties are typically being purchased for use as residential lets or holiday homes. It is important to remember that if you are going to purchase a property to use as a holiday home, or perhaps to renovate and operate a bed and breakfast business there are some key factors you need to consider. Does the property you wish to purchase already have the benefit of utilities? If it is not connected to the National Grid then there could be a significant cost involved in installing the electricity supply. Similarly, does it have the benefit of water, sewerage and gas? Do you need planning permission? If planning permission is in place, does this need amending to accommodate your requirements? Are there are any restrictions in the title deeds which

prevent you from using the property in the way in which you would like? Is the access to the property sufficient for your purposes? For example is the access shared and if so what are the maintenance obligations? Assuming the development can go ahead, how would you like to run the business? Is it as a sole trader, a partnership or should a limited company be formed? What are the tax implications of the way in which you run the business? There could be advantages for income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax in running the business as either a partnership or a company. This will vary depending on individual circumstances. If you are in business with other people, what happens if one of you dies? Also who owns the property – is it owned personally or through the business? Again, there are tax implications which vary upon how the property is owned and these need to be considered before the purchase is complete. The information set out above is an example of where our rural experts may be advising a farmer who wants to diversify the use of a building on his farm or to a client who lives in the town and is considering purchasing a holiday let or perhaps embarking on a change of career. If you are interested in developing buildings you already own, diversifying redundant buildings on your

he words tailor, outfitter or menswear hardly do justice to this superb shop on Jesmond’s Clayton Road because whilst Palmer is all these things it is also much, much more. “When we acquired the site, I had a very clear vision of what I wanted and that was to offer the best men’s clothing in the sort of environment found in London’s Jermyn Street or Savile Row,” says owner Clive Dawson.” Clive is the perfect person to make such a vision a reality. He’s worked in the clothing industry for more than forty years and besides Palmer he runs an agency that supplied Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Joseph, L K Bennett and Liberty with their own-label menswear. Whilst he still maintains his agency office in London, for the last 12 years he has also used his experience and expertise to dress the discerning gentlemen of Tyneside. Firstly through his bespoke tailoring service in Jesmond Road and now at Palmer in Clayton Road. Three years ago Clive began to look for larger premises to launch an expanded version of Palmer that could offer everything from suits and socks

“IT WAS STUCK IN A 50S TIME-WARP,” HE SAYS. “FORTUNATELY THE PLANNING PEOPLE WERE TREMENDOUS AND ASSISTED US TO CREATE A MODERN, STYLISH STORE THAT RETAINS THE PERIOD FACADE AND MANY OTHER ORIGINAL FEATURES.” to raincoats and underwear. His expert eye soon discovered a prime corner site in Jesmond’s historic Brandling Village but this former dress shop needed a lot of work. “It was stuck in a 50s time-warp,” he says. “Fortunately the planning people were tremendous and assisted

us to create a modern, stylish store that retains the period facade and many other original features.” Despite the credit crunch, Clive and his wife were confident enough to invest a substantial amount buying the freehold, which included two residential flats, and converting the shop into a celebration of sartorial elegance. Their faith has been justified and Palmer has proved extremely popular with everyone who appreciates fine clothes - but if you thought exquisite suits and shirts were only for the wealthy or over 50s think again. Palmer carries lines by such famous brands as Bladon, Alan Paine, and John Smedley who remain at the forefront of fashion by updating their classic clothes for each new generation. Similarly Palmer’s

footwear is from noted Northampton manufacturers such as Crocket and Jones, Loake and Trickers as well as the American Sebago who make the world’s best boating shoes. The Palmer difference is product and service. For example Clive also stocks lesser known labels, often from manufacturers who produce lines for better known brands, but at realistic price points. Besides a wealth of classic casual wear, Palmer still specialises in bespoke English suits, which for centuries have been defined by the quality of cut and cloth as well as the right colour and design to suit the man and the occasion. As Clive puts it: a man should wear his suit, not the other way around, and Palmer’s own-label suits exemplify this. Clive has reinvented the familiar jacket-trouser combination by blending Italian style with traditional English tailoring and he can achieve this not only by his experienced and discerning eye but also due to a unique collaboration. “I work with an amazing man called Osvaldo Trucchi from Florence,” he explains. “Tuscany has scores of small specialist manufacturers and Osvaldo knows them all!”

Palmer’s suits can be tailored to fit most tastes and budgets and perhaps the best example is the standard business suit which offers a fitted jacket and two pairs of trousers for just £395 or two jackets and four pairs of trousers for £750. Palmer can also offer made-tomeasure evening and morning wear as well as a range of suits for the younger gentleman. “My ambition is to create a shop where fathers and sons can explore the art and etiquette of all aspects of menswear together, just as I did with my father,” says Clive. This is a truly noble ambition. In our world of mass produced clothing every Englishman’s wardrobe should have the casual and formal items that allow him to make the right impression whatever the occasion. One of Clive's customers explains the Palmer ethos: “Fashion is fleeting but style is eternal,” he says and style is exactly what Palmer is all about. Palmer Menswear, 22 Clayton Rd, Jesmond, is open 9.30am-5pm Mon-Sat and is also online at their new website www.palmermenswear.com

Liz Hands meets renowned wedding dress designer Leigh Hetherington

W

hen Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement, wedding dress designer Leigh Hetherington sketched a gown she believes would have been perfect for the Duchess of Cambridge. “I got a very nice letter back thanking me,” says Leigh, “but I’m sure she already had someone in mind by then. My design was lace, with long sleeves, but more fitted than the dress she wore, with a little ruching along the waist.” It would have been quite a feat to get the commission for the royal wedding dress. But, when you see the Leigh Hetherington designs in her Old Eldon Square shop, you can see many Kate would be sure to love. In fact, Leigh’s taste seems to closely mirror that of Kate. “I like classic, timeless, not fashion pieces,” she says, “clean lines and internal corsetry. I’ve always been into subtle detailing and I source fabrics and lace from all over the world.” The Northumbria University fashion graduate says she was as excited, if not more so, than the rest of the world to see what Kate’s final bridal gown choice was – a £250,000 lace overlay Alexander McQueen number designed by Sarah Burton. “Everyone was talking about Pippa’s dress. But, for me, it was all about Kate’s,” says Leigh, 38. “I was so excited to see the dress. I thought it was absolutely stunning. The cut of it was extremely clever.” Leigh noticed a royal wedding effect straight away at her own shop. But, she says: “No one comes in and asks for a copy of a dress anymore, which I believe they did with Princess Diana’s dress. Copies were run off within hours then. “Now, people want something a bit different, so they might take elements of Kate’s dress and put their own stamp on it. No one wants to be walking down the

aisle and for people to be whispering ‘that’s the same dress as so-and-so’s’. They want it to be unique to them. “I believe a bride should stay true to herself and wear a dress that reflects her personality and tastes.” For Leigh, unique means taking inspiration from bygone eras, and adding a modern twist. “My inspiration comes from fashion through the ages. I love all the old movies. Or, I might just find a piece of fabric, drape it onto a mannequin and watch it evolve into something. “I’m doing a lot of appliqué work at the moment, with cut-out pieces of lace and hand-beading for a 3D effect. Even if you take inspiration from the past, you have to put a modern take on it.” Along with the Duchess of Cambridge, of course, Leigh’s dream clients include public figures from past and present. “I like classical music, so I’d love to design for someone like Katherine Jenkins. She’s got a

beautiful figure as well, very curvy, so my designs would suit her. “I’d also like to go back in time and design for Ava Gardner, Vivienne Leigh and Grace Kelly. Grace Kelly’s is one of my favourite wedding dresses of all time. Princess Margaret’s was stunning as well, very simple and classic. And, I loved Jennifer Lopez’s in the Wedding Planner, with its clean lines.” For her marriage to photographer Adam Lawrenson, 38, Leigh certainly wasn’t going to opt for a highly decorative ‘meringue’ style gown as she wanted to stay true to her own design ethos. So, if you can design any dress you desire, what do you choose for your own wedding day? Breaking with the traditional convention which dictates the bride must wear white, Leigh chose a delicate pink silk fabric to create her own gown. “I made it specifically for myself,” she says. “The dress was fitted to the knee with a puffball skirt, the >>

<< bodice was hand pleated and the internal corsetry made me feel fantastic throughout the day. The dress was a complete one off and I have not made this design again, I wanted it to be special to me. That’s the beauty about being your own designer.” But there are plenty more attractions to designing other people’s dresses too, not least getting to create unique pieces which take centre stage during a couple’s big day. “Every wedding is different, so every wedding dress is different,” says Leigh. “Strapless was incredibly popular, but I’m designing dresses with a lot more sleeves and straps now. “I design for winter weddings where the brides want jackets or sleeves. One bride got married in a deep red silk dress and jacket at the Ice Hotel in Norway. She looked stunning, and underneath she had biker boots on that no one else could see. Another bride kept her Converse on. It’s funny knowing about those quirky touches.

“People might want some fur in winter, so it’s nice to be able to use different materials. I like designing in colour too. I created a dress in green and silver for a Scottish wedding, which was perfect for the setting,” adds Leigh, who lives in Forest Hall with Adam, and their West Highland Terrier Hamish. To complement the beautiful wedding dresses, Leigh hand makes vintage inspired and delicate ethereal headpieces from crystals, pearls, lace and old pieces of jewellery. Leigh also creates brooch bouquets as an unusual alternative to a flower bouquet. "I enjoy collecting brooches and jewellery from past eras and putting them together with crystals and pearls to create one off bouquets. I often incorporate family pieces that have been given to the bride or that may belong to a grandparent who is unable to attend the wedding." During the months it takes to design, make and fit a bespoke dress, friendships are formed and, as Leigh

says, “it gets quite emotional” when it comes to the time to send a bride off with her gown for her big day. But Leigh hopes her designs will become true heirloom pieces passed down from generation to generation. “One bride came back and asked me to cut up her wedding dress to make a Christening robe, which was upsetting at first, but beautiful that the dress was being re-used in such a way. Perhaps in the future, I’ll have daughters coming back to ask me to fit their mother’s gown for their own wedding.”

Liz Hands looks at some of the most unusual beauty treatments available around the region

Cryotherapy Usually used in medicine to treat a variety of ailments, cryotherapy, which comes from the Greek word cryo, meaning cold, is now being put into practice by Jesmond’s Serenity in the City as part of its signature Miracle Age Defying Facial. Thankfully, for someone who is always cold, most of the facial consists of a relaxing, yet intensive, pressure point massage designed to drain toxins, with delicious smelling Anne Sémonin essential and mineral oil products, imported from Paris. The skin is exfoliated, cleansed, polished and nourished during the treatment which includes the application of moisturising gauze across the face. The facial is completed with Express Radiance Ice Cubes, which contain hyaluronic acid, renowned for its skin plumping qualities. It’s a facial with a difference because of its unique massage techniques, products, and ice, and it leaves the complexion visibly tighter, and glowing.

Caviar facial

Moroccan Hammam

While fish eggs may not be the first ingredient you’d think of putting on your face, the Jesmond Beauty Clinic’s caviar facials promise brighter, younger, healthier skin. The facials use products by A-lister favourite La Prairie whose cult range uses caviar extracted from the roe of Baerii sturgeon grown on aqua-farms in France. You wouldn’t want to eat it though – the line uses proteinrich extracts from the substance surrounding the egg of the fish, not the roe itself. The treatment starts with a relaxing back massage before a threeminute fruit enzyme peel, which tingles a little as dull skin is removed. Caviar beads are then pressed onto your face through gauze, leaving skin looking fresh, and smoothing out fine lines.

Vampire facial Hitting the headlines recently as the procedure of choice for celebrities hoping to turn back the clock, the vampire facial, as it has come to be known, is available at Revamp in Jesmond. More of an invasive procedure than a straight-forward beauty treatment, it involves 20mls of your own blood being taken before this is placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate the plasma and platelets from the rest of the blood. The plasma and platelets, or PRP, are then injected with a fine needle back into the patient wherever they need some extra help – whether this is to reduce obvious lines or wrinkles or at the site of scarring. The platelets trick the skin into repairing itself. It’s a treatment that won’t be for everyone, but Revamp director James Wilde says: “It’s my personal favourite treatment. I used to have fillers in my nose-to-mouth lines, but since having PRP, I haven’t needed to. And, the joy of it is there’s no risk of any reaction or rejection because there are no toxins, just your own plasma.”

Tibetan sound massage

Not available anywhere else in the UK, the Tibetan Sound Massage at Rockliffe Hall has its roots in an ancient practice dating back nearly 4,000 years. Stemming from Tibetan medicine known as Ku Nye, the 90-minute treatment uses resonating Tibetan bowls, which are placed on the body during the massage. Rockliffe Hall’s spa director Liz Holmes said: “This brand new Tibetan Sound Massage is one of the most unusual yet beneficial treatments to become available in a UK spa. We’re really pleased that we’re the first spa to offer the treatment, which can help such a wide range of ailments from insomnia to muscle pains. The treatment combines beautiful oils, massage and sound techniques to provide the ultimate in relaxation and rejuvenation.”

Finding a traditional Moroccan Hammam in the heart of rural Northumberland is something of a surprise. But Fullerton Place Spa owners Octavia and Jono Hedley-Dent decided to include a Hammam experience, having spent New Year in Morocco while they were developing their Belsay hideaway. The centuries-old ritual takes place in the spa’s specially-built Hammam room. During the signature indulgence treatment, the body is first cleansed with warm water and Savon Noir olive and eucalyptus soap, before being exfoliated with Moroccan kessa gloves. Mineral-rich lava clay sourced from Moroccan mountains is applied and the experience is finished with a deeply relaxing massage with Argan oil, although you can choose to add on a Moroccan rose facial. Fullerton Place is part of the Hedley-Dent’s estate, which has been in the family since 1950. It is located opposite their luxury accommodation at Shortflatt Tower.

hile Christmas can be particularly emotional for those who have lost someone special, the hospice’s Light Up A Life programme provides a way to remember happier times. For a donation to Gosforth-based St Oswald’s, which provides specialist care to both adults and children, supporters can dedicate a light on a special Christmas tree to the memory of a loved one. St Oswald’s sends out a Christmas card, inscribed with your loved one’s name, as well as a memory star, which you can personalise with your own message. Those who have donated are also invited to one of two special remembrance services, in Newcastle or Berwick, where there will be music from local choirs along with a ceremony to officially switch on the tree lights. Memory stars can be added to a display around the Christmas tree. Katy Taberham, fundraiser at St Oswald’s, explains: “Light Up a Life is a way of remembering loved ones even if you’ve had no dealings at all with the hospice. It’s for anyone who wants to remember someone they’ve lost. “They pay a donation and, in return, they get a card with the name of their loved one. For some, that’s as far as they want to go, but they can also come along to one of our services. “There’s a huge Christmas tree, with a star light on it for every person. obviously be very emotional. There are lots of tears, but they’re often happy tears when someone is thinking about the good times they shared with the person they lost. There’s also a supportive atmosphere of collectiveness. Everyone there has lost someone.” Services this year will be held at Berwick Baptist Church on December 16th and Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena on December 18th. Another way to remember a lost loved one is the St Oswald’s Tribute Tree, supported by Sanderson Young. It’s a way to mark the achievements of fundraisers, who help to raise over the £6.5m needed by the hospice every year so it can continue to provide care to those with life-limiting illnesses. A St Oswald’s Tribute Fund gives friends, family and colleagues a way to raise money in their loved one’s name. And, those who have started a fund can, if they wish, add a copper leaf to an artwork especially made by local artist Andy McDermott. The leaf is engraved with the name of the fund and hung on the tree. When the donor has achieved their target, they are presented with the leaf as a memento. St Oswald’s is also again hosting its eagerly

anticipated Christmas market, in the grounds of the hospice, where little ones will have the chance to meet Santa. With a Santa’s toy shop theme, the event will also feature pony rides, birds of prey, handmade crafts and gifts, mulled wine, and locally produced food and drink. Another key fixture in the North East social calendar is the St Oswald’s show-stopping Red Carpet Ball, which takes place at the beginning of March. This year, St Oswald’s is returning to the golden age of motion pictures, with the glitz and glamour of bygone eras. Viv Williamson, head of corporate and major gifts, said: “The grandeur, drama and escapism of Hollywood is coming to the Hilton hotel in March and is guaranteed to exceed our guests ‘great expectations’.”

SMITH MARSTON

THE LEGAL SITUATION WHEN PURCHASING A HOUSE IS THAT THE ONUS IS ON THE PURCHASERS TO SATISFY THEMSELVES REGARDING THE

CONDITION&SUITABILITY

OF THE PROPERTY.

Although a pre-purchase survey may seem to be yet another cost at this time, it is usually money well spent.

H

opefully, the results of the survey will not stop the purchase of the house but it must always be preferable to be fully aware of any shortcomings of the property before taking the decision to proceed with the purchase. Sometimes, defects which become apparent during a survey will provide some scope for re-negotiation of the purchase price. At Smith Marston LLP, we are able to provide a full independent surveying service.

WHY CHOOSE SMITH MARSTON? We think that there are various reasons why you should choose Smith Marston to carry out a survey regarding the most expensive purchase you will probably make in your life: All surveys are only carried out by experienced Chartered Building Surveyors - we do not have unqualified staff undertaking the survey with the

completed report then 'signed-off' by a qualified surveyor. We provide a thorough and comprehensive report complete with photographs of the most important matters. Clearly, we will report significant concerns about the house to you. However, the experience of our Surveyors is such that all have the confidence to reassure you where there may be matters which appear to be alarming but which are, in fact, not of a serious nature. We realise that you are having the survey because you want to buy the house and the purpose of the survey is not to put you off buying the house of your dreams even though you do need to be alerted to significant matters of concern. We can provide a verbal report the same day if time is of the essence. Following your receipt of the report, we are more than willing to discuss any matters of concern or aspects which require any clarification

And, after all, this is not a situation to cut corners and it is certainly not always the best option to go for the cheapest option when arranging a survey. It is very easy for a Surveyor to provide a damning report which would spoil the sale - and remove any liability for the surveyor at the same time. We do not do this - we provide honest, reliable reports to provide you, as the potential purchaser, with the appropriate information to make an informed decision about the purchase and possibly to renegotiate the purchase price. Because we insist upon the highest quality of surveying and reporting, we are not always the cheapest but, when buying a home for hundreds of thousands of pounds, we would suggest that it may well be false economy to simply opt for the cheapest survey option. REGIONAL LETTINGS

Reflecting on an extremely prosperous 2013, Sanderson Young’s regional lettings department have been encouraged by the ever growing demand for rental properties, but offer some words of advice for those looking to take a first dip into this fast paced market.

“WE HAVE A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE AND DEDICATION IN THIS DEPARTMENT, AND HAVE THE EXPERT UNDERSTANDING NEEDED TO ADVISE OUR LANDLORDS IN THE BEST MANNER…

68 | collection

G

ail McLean, Regional Lettings manager, set up the residential lettings division almost eleven years ago now, and has carved a reputation as being one of the most knowledgeable in the business; passing on her experience to her highly skilled and motivated team. “We have a wealth of experience and dedication in this department, and have the expert understanding needed to advise our landlords in the best manner. This level of expertise is often needed in a fierce market where there are often many legal barriers for landlords and loopholes for tenants to take advantage of.” Gail has heard many stories from landlords of bad experiences they have encountered through private rental agreements and tenant find services, and Sanderson Young’s fully managed service has been designed and developed with this in mind. Their unrivalled rent protection policy is watertight and is

AW13_Layout 1 27/09/2013 08:51 Page 69

REGIONAL LETTINGS the main focus within their fully managed service. gail comments “We are the only agent in the North east to be offering this type of protection for our clients, and although this is very rarely called upon, it is vital peace of mind for our landlords. everything is a risk in life, and we are here to eliminate risk in this scenario”. What would gail’s words of wisdom be when considering renting your property? “There are so many issues which a private landlord may have no experience in dealing with, or had never even thought of prior to renting their property. my top five causes for concern would be:• NON-PAYING TENANTS rent arrears are extremely difficult to chase up and often in order to recoup your full rental this needs to be settled in court, with the landlord having to pay their own legal fees. This is all covered within our managed service. • GENERAL PROPERTY MAINTENANCE This includes a 24 hour call out service which as a private landlord is often impossible, particularly if you are on holiday or are out of the area. our experienced team have a wealth of excellent contractors and are here to deal with all property maintenance, as well as an emergency call out service. • EVICTION Should a tenant fail to vacate your property, it is not as simple as commanding an immediate vacation. under the protection from eviction act 1977, the law dictates

“WE ARE THE ONLY AGENT IN THE NORTH EAST TO BE OFFERING THIS TYPE OF PROTECTION FOR OUR CLIENTS, AND ALTHOUGH THIS IS VERY RARELY CALLED UPON, IT IS VITAL PEACE OF MIND FOR OUR LANDLORDS… that protection is given to all tenants and it can be a lengthy process before a Landlord can gain possession. again, our managed service covers and deals with these cases should they arise. • SUBLETTING PROPERTY many tenants can sublet bedrooms in the property without the knowledge of the landlord, or even the property in its entirety. With our regular checks of the property and full background checks, you can rest safely in the knowledge that this is all in order. • REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND CHECKS This eliminates any inconvenience to the landlord and our lettings department report any issues immediately, alleviating ongoing problems. as well as the fully managed service providing clients with peace of mind, the regional connections gail and the team have built are second to none. in fact, gail reports that around 85% of their business comes from the corporate end of the market. “Sanderson young

deals with quality lets from large corporates and blue chip companies, where very often the tenant is the organisation and the rental agreements are for over two years. This growth in the North east economy is fantastic to see, and a sign that a much needed injection in the region is ongoing”. With an improving rental market, where gail is achieving average rentals in line with the London market, it may well be the right time for you to consider a move into the rental market. “many of our landlords have been investing in property in recent years due to the returns available, which can well exceed interest invested in the banks. We have seen a growth of 10 – 15% on rental values even in the last 12 months, as demand continues to outstrip supply.” if you are considering renting your property but are cautious of the potential risks involved, gail would be delighted to meet with you and offer no obligation advice, as well as explain in further detail the services offered by the regional Lettings division. 2013 has been an exciting year for the new homes market

W

ith the Government’s Help to Buy scheme giving a much needed boost to this sector. Janet Hopkinson, New Homes Director, has been extremely heartened by the good business to come from this initiative. “Independent developers through to major housebuilders have all reported on the success of this scheme, and at Sanderson Young we have definitely experienced this first hand”. The scheme, where only a 5% deposit is required to purchase a new home, is expected to provide £3.5 billion of additional investment into the new homes marketplace over the next three years. “A rise in share prices of at least 20% for many corporate builders in 2013, including Barratt, Bellway, Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey definitely substantiates this scheme has spirited the marketplace” comments Janet. Albeit a more positive market, the steps buyers take to search for a new home have definitely changed, and the developments in online marketing of property, as well as the need for many sites to be launched off plan, has been the main driving factor of Sanderson Young’s New Homes Division’s success. Janet says “The means and methods of marketing property, particularly new developments, have changed drastically in the past five years, and it is still surprising to see the ongoing advancements in digital media. This has made it increasingly difficult for developers, particularly independent and small scale builders, to hit their target audience”. Janet’s sales team at Sanderson Young are now extremely experienced in selling a wide range of new schemes, particularly off-plan, which is testament to

116 | collection

“A CONNECTION WITH SANDERSON YOUNG HAS ENABLED BUYERS TO PUT FAITH AND TRUST IN THESE EXCELLENT DEVELOPMENTS, WHICH IS ENCOURAGING TO SEE.” the knowledgeable and motivated staff. “Each of our four sales offices has now sold a range of developments, from initial off-plan reservations through to the completion of a development with site visits and available show homes. We have firmly cemented ourselves as the market leading, new homes specialist agent in the region.” It is the initial off-plan sales which prove to be the most important for a development to take off and gain momentum, as well as breed confidence in the scheme itself as a whole. These are also often the most challenging sales, particularly if site visits are not possible. “This April, we saw the launch of the first phase of The Limes, a fantastic new scheme by Cussin’s in Alnwick. This development offers a mix of affordable housing, three and four bedroom terraced homes and four and five bedroom detached properties, with thirty units released in the first phase. We have been delighted with the response, and now only six houses remain. All of these reservations have been taken without the need for a show home or site visit”. Why is off plan selling becoming easier? “I would have to say that off plan selling is by no means easy, however due to the knowledge and experience of our sales teams, as well as an enthusiasm and

commitment to the scheme; we can really sell the developer’s vision, ethos and quality of finish. Supporting the sales team is a wealth of literature on the developments, created by our in-house media department, along with high quality visuals and site plans.” Increased brand awareness in Sanderson Young, which is synonymous with uniqueness and luxury, goes a long way to further impress potential buyers and drive interest forward, which is especially important when such buyers may not be familiar with the builder in question. Janet says “A connection with Sanderson Young has enabled buyers to put faith and trust in these excellent developments, which is encouraging to see.” Sanderson Young offer full land appraisals, design and development of schemes through to the sale of individual units through our regional offices, which provide small and large scale builders with a full marketing support. Janet is also excited about some business in the pipeline for 2014, where the company has been aiding large scale house builders on several schemes to be launched in the near future. awkwell Beck is the tranquil setting for an exclusive development of two luxury stone properties of distinction and the latest luxury development to be completed by Stone Homes. It is rare that the opportunity arises to become part of the community of Hawkwell, but to be able to do so whilst residing in a luxury family home, built by some of the finest local craftsman, makes such an opportunity genuinely exceptional. Well House and Stamford House are two substantial new builds, traditionally crafted in a Georgian vernacular to enhance the country location in which they are set.

NEW HOMES

Hawkwell is a peaceful Northumbrian hamlet offering excellent commuting possibilities into Newcastle City Centre as well as to the village of Ponteland and the Tyne Valley. It is also surrounded by some of Northumberland’s most picturesque countryside and offers an excellent opportunity for a more tranquil way of life. The charming village of Stamfordham is only a short walk, with its village green, excellent First school, two churches and two Public houses providing for a sustainable family lifestyle. Mowden Hall, a leading co-educational preparatory school for children aged three to thirteen is conveniently placed. Both of these Georgian residences are large five bedroomed properties with floor areas extending to approximately 4500 sq ft of luxury living space finished to a very high standard. The build principle is not simply to create a mock or Georgian style but to craft a real period home using traditional build practices and materials. Hawkwell Beck combines a timeless elegance, luxurious build and finish qualities with modern

conveniences expected of homes of this status. Using local tumbled natural stone laid in a random style with hand cut and hand tooled jambs, lintels and cills, each house shows the full character of traditional materials and building methods to the outside world, whilst the interior is sound proofed, insulated and lined throughout to provide warm, comfortable, luxurious living. With handmade kitchen with Aga, natural stone tiling, Villeroy & Boch bathrooms and under floor heating the specification of these properties is extremely high. Both homes have been constructed with the needs of the modern executive family in mind. Both homes also include a loft of over 700 sq ft which is designed to be easily converted to living space in the unlikely event of more living space being required. The detailing to the external stonework is exceptional, each L-shaped quoin that forms the many corners of the building is hand tooled with roping to the edges to match the equally ornate jambs that extravagantly surround each and every window opening. The roof is finished in antique Welsh slate with rolled lead to the ridges and hips, with lost soffits providing the base for the cast style guttering with each bracket chopped into each rafter. The wall plate is pulled out by an inch to create a real feature and the huge feature chimney is created in genuine rubbed Ashlar stone. There are many touches and finishes externally that combine spectacularly to produce a building that would not look out of place sat next door to a 19th century Georgian mansion house. No imitations, there are no copies or mock pieces, each home is entirely real, the genuine article and the last word in fine stonemasonry. Externally both properties feature a double stone garage with gardens currently being designed by local Chelsea Flower Show award winning designer Alan Kent Kapper attached to paddocks of approximately one acre. The use of modern materials and construction techniques allied to passionate design has imbued each home with great character, but above all will provide any family with elegant and gracious living for generations to come. It is rare that the opportunity arises to become part of

the enchanting rural community of Hawkwell. To be able to do so whilst residing in a luxury family home, built by some of the finest local craftsman, makes such an opportunity exceptional and definitely not one to be missed.

NEW HOMES

There are exciting times ahead for The Limes this winter, with the first families set to move into their new homes on this prestigious development.

S

oon-to-be residents of The Limes, who have reserved off plan, have been quickly won over by the site’s breathtaking views, second-to-none build quality and superb location just a stone’s throw away from Alnwick’s bustling centre. Just a handful of first-phase properties remain available, but those which can still be reserved are some of the most impressive units in the scheme. The Limes has attracted people of all age groups, from young professionals and busy families to retired couples wishing to enjoy all that Alnwick has to offer. There are people from the local area and also those moving to Alnwick from further afield, many of whom will be commuting to work in Newcastle either by rail from nearby Alnmouth Station or on the A1. Those who have already reserved are now busy choosing the bespoke finishes for their new homes, including the kitchens, bathrooms and tiling of their choice. They have cited the lifestyle on offer at the development, with its semi-parkland setting, the convenient location and beautiful position looking across Alnwick and beyond as reasons why they were quick to choose to make The Limes their new home. Bill King, who has reserved one of the few split-level homes available with his wife and daughter, said: "We chose The Limes because I run a business and I want to use the ground floor as my office to work from home. The design looked lovely and we were impressed with the size of the property at a reasonable price. In other places we've looked, the rooms tended to be quite small but at The Limes one of the main attractions is the big rooms and also the 10-year warranty was important as we know we don't have to worry about spending any more money once we move in." And Chris Waite, who is buying with his wife Heather, said: “We both work in Alnwick and The Limes was the

120 | collection

“e Limes really is a one-off development, not only because of its unique location and stunning views but also because of the style, quality and variety of homes on offer… best way for us to get on the property ladder. The houses are well designed and the location is ideal.” The classical style of homes at The Limes has also proved a big draw, with houses built in a combination of heritage brick, stone and slate, combining a traditional look with all the modern conveniences of a new build. With their head office on Alnwick’s main street, The Limes is an important scheme for builders Cussins. Keen to support the town’s unique events calendar they signed up as main sponsors for both the Alnwick Food Festival which saw the return of celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli and also the town’s annual charity Beer Festival. They are just two of the events The Limes’ new residents will be able to enjoy, as Alnwick has a busy programme of festivals and fairs throughout the year, including regular markets where you can buy the freshest, local food, straight from farmers and producers. Add to that, the wealth of good schools within walking distance, the cultural offering of Alnwick’s Playhouse, the café culture of the vibrant town centre, and the leisure opportunities afforded by surrounding coast and countryside, and it’s not hard to see why The Limes is proving so popular. Janet Hopkinson, operations and new homes director

at Sanderson Young, said: “The Limes really is a one-off development, not only because of its unique location and stunning views but also because of the style, quality and variety of homes on offer. Sales at The Limes have been a phenomenal success, highlighted by the fact that all of our purchasers bought their chosen properties ‘off plan’, something we have not seen to such an extent in new home sales for a good few years.” Prices for homes at The Limes start at £90,000 for a two-bedroom property, rising to around £300,000 for a five-bedroom detached family home. GENTLEMEN…

WALKTHISWAY Karen Wilson shows you how to create a cosy gentleman's lounge where

being snowed in this winter would be a pleasure

I

f you have a North facing room which doesn't get much light, work with the space rather than against it and create a cosy retreat where you'll want to batten down the hatches during those long dark autumn and winter nights. Be inspired by Highland country hotels to create that classic gentlemen's club cum hunting lodge look. Opt for a crackling real fire, mismatched leather club chairs and rustic furniture while introducing pattern and texture with checked throws, mohair blankets, touchy feeley cushions and shaggy rugs. If the typical deer's head feels a bit too ubiquitous, go for an antler mirror or chandelier instead. And don't be afraid of using darker colours, as a palette of browns, reds, greens and greys will create the perfect snug cocoon for curling up with a mulled wine or brandy. Claire Hornby, creative and display manager at Barker and Stonehouse, says: “To achieve the look of a traditional ‘country club’ in your home, start with lots of comfortable seating – think big leather sofas, an abundance of armchairs and soft furnishings with a patriotic twist. Then make it more inviting with unique accessories, such as those from the Timothy Oulton collection at Barker and Stonehouse. Inspired by Oulton’s love of antiques and flea market treasures the range has a wonderfully authentic feel which works perfectly with this look.

“Sports and hunting also go hand in hand with country clubs so vintage-style sports portraits and quirky products are the perfect decoration.” Here's how to get the look...

Every development creates its own individual character by incorporating local architectural styles or by creating innovative, high quality, flagship buildings. Internally, we make sure every aspect of an apartment is built around the homeowner’s needs, from the layout of the rooms to the design of bathrooms and kitchen worktops. A development will offer either Later Living or Assisted Living apartments and each style has been designed to suit a different level of independence. Our Later Living developments offer a lifestyle stripped of annoying and time-consuming chores so homeowners can enjoy their independence in an environment that offers companionship, privacy and security. There are facilities such as the homeowners’ lounge in which to socialise and a guest suite where

friends and relatives can stay (also available in Assisted Living developments). For homeowners who need a greater level of support our Assisted Living apartments are built with wheelchair access and many design features to help with day-to-day tasks including electric kitchen windows, level floor showers and easy-grip lever taps. There’s also a range of support packages offering domestic assistance such as a 24hr laundry service, linen changing, cleaning, ironing and personal care packages which can be tailored to suit each homeowner’s requirements. All our developments feature comprehensive security including a 24-hour emergency call system and a dedicated House Manager or Estates Manager to help take care of things and make all our residents feel at home. Our fully trained sales consultants can also advise clients through every step of the purchase process, from helping to sell their current property to arranging their move, as well as liaising with solicitors and estate agents. Assisted Living is available at Henderson Court Ponteland & Malpas Court Northallerton whilst Later Living is available at Bygate Court Monkseaton and Marden Court Whitley Bay. MANOR HOUSE LIVING FROM HADRIAN HEALTHCARE

Jazz Bar - Wetherby

As owner and Chairman of Hadrian Healthcare Group, I am passionate about pursuing excellence in everything we do. We can be proud to boast of being the region’s premier provider of accommodation and care for the discerning elderly client. A capital investment of over £50m in the past 5 years has ensured our facilities are at the cutting edge in quality standards. Our clients enjoy luxury private suites and accommodation typically includes small café bistros, restaurants, libraries, bars, ballrooms and cinemas. Furthermore, we believe in positioning our homes in very central locations, surrounded by all local amenities so our clients still remain very much a

part of community life.Furthermore, we recognise that to achieve high standards of personal-centred client care which we seek to deliver, then our workforce must be committed, highly motivated and well trained. That is why we oversee a huge annual investment in staff training and development. We have a high level of staff retention (98% this half year) and this is, I believe, testament to the success of our training and development programme. We are currently providing care to over 600 clients in 10 locations and employing nearly 700 staff. We intend to continue the gradual expansion of our business during 2014 – ensuring that as a Group

we remain large enough to make a difference but small enough to care about each individual we care for or employ. onsite gym. There are also domestic, laundry, catering and care services for residents to use as necessary to help them enjoy the finer things in life. When planning a development such as Eslington Mews, we take great care in choosing the right location because the success of a site means balancing residents’ desire to relax in peaceful surroundings with their need for good transport links to the nearest town or city. Similarly we place great value on good design and make sure each apartment is equipped with such necessities as storage or loft space. Cupboards are vital because many owners have

downsized from large family homes and do not want to dispose of their treasured possessions. Family is also very important and our two bedroom properties provide the extra space for friends, children or grandchildren to stay and when it comes to entertaining, what could be better than Sunday lunch in our onsite Orangery restaurant? We also offer a free moving, packing and DIY service to help residents settle in, as often their families live too far away to help with this process. Select Living are opening a new Sales & Marketing Office on Dryden Road in Low Fell to sell the remaining properties at Eslington Mews. Call 0191 461 4290 or visit, the office is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.00am to 1pm and on Saturdays from 11am to 3pm. In 2011, Helen McArdle launched Select Living to meet this growing demand for properties that reflect the changing nature of over 55s’ lifestyles. Select Living communities offer one or two bedroom apartments in low density developments and a good example is Eslington Mews in Low Fell. Thorp Design take us on a unique journey through their world of interior design

Living in someone else’s home - Philippe Starck’s, for example - is complete anathema to me,” says Philippa Thorp. “We want you to live in your home, not ours. In fact, I consider a project a success when we come to its end and the client thinks they have done it all themselves.” Thorp has been interior designing for nearly 30 years and her London-based company, Thorp Design, has won an understated reputation for outfitting the home - and, more often, homes - of the well-off; even, that is, if she insists that interior design is a better value option than most people imagine. Understated because, if other designers have built a reputation on providing a strong signature look, Thorp has taken the unusual route of making each project unique to the person paying for it. Those clients - who take Thorp from London to the Bahamas, Thailand to Devon, from city apartments to holiday homes and even the occasional bar or gym cannot be in any rush. Each project typically takes between two and three years to complete, from the purchase of the property (or even just the site) to the last sweep of the plasterer. “In fact, clients often take me along to see a property before they buy,” says Thorp - indeed, many also stick with her practice from home-move to home-move, 12 times in the case of one peripatetic client. “I can always see the potential in a place immediately - that if they shifted certain walls and put in certain windows they would have a much better space, changes that most clients don’t think about. It’s 3D thinking, but it’s very intuitive. Going with the gut can be genuinely

useful. It’s the reason why dyslexic people make good decorators - because they can think in terms of texture, shape and space.” Certainly there are certain rules of Thorp’s thumb that characterise each place: a layering of contrasting textures (“tightly-woven silk does something different to bouncy chenille,” she notes); the use of colour accents, if not outright bold colour, about which she says we are all too timid; and, above all, atmospheric lighting. “Lighting is simply the most important topic in interior design,” she adds. “The balance of light in a room - between up-lighting, down-lighting and natural light - is what makes it.” And, refreshingly, not for Thorp the painfully contemporary or minimalistic: "The more modern the scheme, the more it tends towards the bland," she reckons. "The idea [with any project] is to find the space between letting the personality of the homeowner come through and the good ideas, which you can’t just impose.”>>

AW13_Layout 1 01/10/2013 11:07 Page 130

<< After a spell working as a PA in the City, it was a chance discussion with a friend - who announced she wanted to be an interior designer - that saw Thorp co-founding a company and initially overseeing the business end. “As soon as she mentioned the job I knew it was what I wanted to do,” says Thorp. “I was always rearranging the furniture at home as a child, I come from an old-fashioned family where mother made the curtains and re-upholstered the furniture, so I knew how to do those things and everything about the job appealed - the art, the finance, the legal aspects, the people, the PR, the culture, the stress...” The resulting partnership didn’t last, but Thorp stayed in the industry, building the business to encompass not just interior design but interior architecture, garden landscaping and even art buying. She has seen some major changes in the industry, not least thanks to the culture's growing fascination with homes and their look. “When I started out there wasn’t that whole DIY culture that we have now, that implies it can teach you how to do it all, while fostering the myth too that you can have something for nothing,” she explains. “To think of what we do as just a question of what colour of felt does on the wall is to trivialise the creation of the whole, which is a mix of ingredients and skills. Of course, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. It’s not just interior designers - everyone thinks they’re a doctor now too. "But the good thing is that a certain tattiness that was

the norm in homes 20 years ago wouldn’t be there now," she adds. "There is an appreciation for our homes that is on the up, as places of refuge, as places that reflect who we are." So she isn't about imposing her idea of style, as her disregard for the idea of living in a Philippe Starck home might suggest? Well, not exactly. There is, Thorp says, still the question of good taste, which, she argues, she has developed a fine eye for over the years. "Some people have innate good taste, of course, but others need guidance," she says. "But certainly there is such a thing as good taste. Nasty is pretty much nasty in everyone’s book." GLASS FROM THE PAST

Older properties have a look and a style that typifies their era and all too often ‘home improvements’ can change this. One year on, Neil Gordon revisits Blackthorn Timber Windows to find out how they blend the old with the new to retain the character of a property whilst replacing the windows and doors.

T

he North East region is blessed with a great number of quality properties built in the late-19th or early 20th Century featuring genuine stained glass designs to top-lights or whole windows. Many home-owners are reluctant to lose these attractive features and consequently have avoided upgrading their windows for energyefficient double-glazing. Now the North-East’s wooden window specialists Blackthorn Timber Windows offer a solution – replace your windows AND keep the original stained glass. Blackthorn Timber MD Duncan Forster explains, “Just over a year ago we teamed up with local stained glass expert Derek Halliday to help us recover and re-use our customers’ cherished antique glass.” “These designs are over 80-years old and reflect the design and style of their time. They are an important and attractive feature of the property, often different in every house along the street. In some cases it was the reason that our customer bought the house!” The process is a meticulous one, as Duncan explains, “First of all we remove the old windows and install the new, double-glazed wooden windows in their place. The original stained glass is transported to the glass workshop still in the original frame for protection. There it is carefully removed, gently cleaned over several days and then everything is inspected. If the old lead is in poor condition we might need to strengthen it, any broken or missing glass is replaced and all the soldered joints are checked. The lead is then blackened again. Finally we make up a new double-glazed unit with the stained glass panel sandwiched between two layers of new plain glass.”

Blackthorn Timber’s joiners then return to the house to install the new double glazing unit featuring the original stained glass. The results are spectacular. “There is no substitute for the sparkle and depth of rich colour that real stained glass offers,” says Duncan, “and it is wonderful to be able to maintain this key element of a house’s character in this way whilst giving our customers much more energy-efficient windows. Heat loss is reduced by about 70% but the beautiful glass remains.” “We can also recreate stained glass units where they have gone missing over the years, working from photographs or other points of reference, or even create truly new pieces.” This attention to detail is characteristic of Blackthorn Timber’s whole approach to replacing windows and doors. They want to improve the comfort within the home without altering the look of the house. Installations Manager Paul Coates takes up this point, “most of our customers want big improvements in

their insulation but very little obvious change in the appearance of the windows.” “It’s a challenge which is solved through detailed and thoughtful surveying together with the close involvement of the customer and this enables us to keep any differences to a minimum” says Paul, “What we really enjoy is speaking with our customers at the end of a job and hearing their positive feedback and that of their neighbours.” The high quality of the windows and doors is matched by the workmanship of their installation teams, all of whom are time-served joiners. “The quality of the windows speaks for itself but it is the work of our installers that puts the icing on the cake,” says Duncan. “There is often a lot of additional joinery work involved in replacing large 100-year-old windows with ornate architraves and original timber shutters to take into account. But when the job is finished and the new windows are viewed from inside or outside, the results are really satisfying.

When Jaguar launched the E Type back in 1961, they didn’t expect the car to be so well received. The car was in production for over 13 years and they managed to sell over 70,000 cars worldwide. It quickly went on to become the must-have car for celebs and business leaders.

I

THE RANGE TOPPING 495BHP V8 NOT ONLY HAS 115BHP MORE BUT ITS PERFORMANCE IS BLISTERING. THE CAR STORMS TO 60MPH IN 4.2 SECONDS AND THE CAR’S TOP SPEED IS LIMITED TO 186MPH.

n 2008 The Daily Telegraph ranked the E Type as the most beautiful in the world, and upon seeing the car Enzo Ferrari said it was the most beautiful car ever made. After over 50 years, Jaguar has introduced a suitable successor to the legendary E Type. After all of the accolades and praise heaped on the E Type, this car has a lot to live up to. The car is available in three engine choices, the base engine produces 340 bhp or 380 bhp and the range topping V8 has 495 bhp on tap. The 380 bhp V8 has the extra performance along with the extra noise to match thanks to the standard Noise Revealing Active Exhaust. The range topping 495bhp V8 not only has 115bhp more but its performance is blistering. The car storms to 60mph in 4.2 seconds and the car’s top speed is limited to 186mph. The sound from the quad exhausts really gets the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. When down changing gears the pops and crackles are addictive. Both V6 engine cars should average 31 mpg and they omit 209g CO2 but I am sure with a heavy right foot most owners will struggle to achieve more than 15mpg. Another bonus for anyone buying the S are the adaptive dynamics the variable dampers give the car tremendous grip on twisty and challenging roads. After driving all three cars I can safely say my pick of the range was the V6 S. It has the performance and the

soundtrack needed to make any drive a real pleasure. The base car is priced from £58,000 and rises to £78,000 for the range-topping model, which is still much cheaper than the comparable 911 convertibles. Despite being the entry-level car it is still quick enough for most potential owners. The engine sounds amazing and you will find yourself blipping the throttle at any chance possible just to hear the exhaust pop and crackle. The car also comes with an 8-speed auto gearbox as standard. For any budding Lewis Hamilton’s out there, there are gearshift paddles to make the car more engaging. It shifts gears fast and positively, it also feels direct and immediate unlike any Jaguar autos before. The car’s steering is a Hydraulic

AW13_Layout 1 27/09/2013 08:52 Page 133

system and it is more natural than the 911’s Electric system. No Jaguar before has had steering as quick or precise before. The F Type features an all aluminium platform, which is linked to the XK but, it has been completely re-engineered for the F Type. Jaguar has gone to great lengths to build this car in a green way. Half of the car’s aluminium is recycled and the car is bonded rather than welded. They have also managed to use 70% less energy when building it. Upon opening the car door you are greeted with the smell of leather and the cabin is a very sumptuous place to be. Sliding into the cockpit you will immediately notice the seats are positioned very far

back placing the occupants for a 50/50 weight distribution; you are also treated to a great view across the long contoured bonnet. The dash looks modern and the piston style gear lever and clever switchgear are the highlights in the cabin. As the car is a two seater the door bins are not huge and there is no space behind the seats for any storage. Another stumbling block for this car is the shallow boot; any keen golfers will struggle to fit their clubs in though. If you are planning to go away in this car you will have to keep your luggage to an absolute minimum. The boot size is the same with the roof up or down and it can also be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 30mph. >>

<< After driving this car for a few days you can’t help but notice how stunning it looks from any angle. The designers have used the iconic E Type for inspiration but the F Type looks modern and fresh and unlike anything else on the road. I was really reluctant to hand the keys back. The car is more expensive than the Porsche Boxster but it feels much more special. Given the car’s price and performance the car has the 911 in its sights and it really tries its best to take on this automotive icon. I think Jaguar have managed to pull off a great successor to the legendary E Type. OUT & ABOUT

The phenomenon of pop-up

dining is quickly becoming an alternative to eating out in traditional restaurants.

Liz Hands takes a look at some of the tasty pop-ups on offer in the North East. Vallum Kitchen Garden Chef’s Pod

Gareth Kyle at Whickham Hermitage

Cook, food lover and Masterchef roadshow winner Gareth Kyle launched his pop-up restaurant, with a Geordie Garden Supper Club, this summer. “I’d been wanting to run a little pop up restaurant night for a long time and, after a chance visit to the Whickham Hermitage Garden, I knew I’d found the perfect venue,” he said, “a hidden walled garden with a brilliant little café building and right on the doorstep too.” That first night, Gareth served up what he describes as “traditional Geordie dishes with a modern approach,” including sharing boards of game pie, Newcastle eggs, Northumbrian nettle cheese and pickled celery, followed by Craster kippers and smoked mackerel pate with oatcakes and Northumbrian ham hock. Since then, his supper clubs have gone from strength to strength, with the next ones in September sold out. BUT THERE ARE EVENTS PLANNED ON DECEMBER 12TH, 13TH AND 14TH. hello@garethkyle.co.uk, www.garethkyle.co.uk Vallum Farm and artisan community on Hadrian’s Wall is now home to the Vallum Kitchen Garden Chef’s Pod and a growing list of illustrious chefs will be popping up there over the coming months. At the time of writing, the confirmed list boast 14 Michelin stars between them, and include Gleneagles’ Andrew Fairlie, Simon Rogan of L’Enclume in the Lake District, Claude Bosi of the famed Hibiscus in London, and the region’s newest Michelin star, James Close of the Raby Hunt near Darlington. David Kennedy, whose restaurant at Vallum overlooks the garden, is also popping up regularly, as is Terry Laybourne of Café 21 and Simon Walsh of Close House. The pod is a shepherd’s hut made from reclaimed timber by Trunk in Bellingham, Northumberland. Visiting chefs work in front of 12 diners seated at a communal timber table, working with produce picked from the kitchen garden as they need it. Anna Hedworth, aka The Grazer, first started a food blog in 2011 as a way of archiving her recipes. Now she also runs curated food and dining events across the region. “The ‘pop up’ explosion has coincided with the economic recession,” says Anna. “And, on one level, it could be seen as a backlash against ‘blingy’ fine dining extravagance in a time of austerity, but for me, there’s just a basic appeal to good, simple food served without the frills and shared in a social setting. “The setting is as important as the food, whether it’s 20 strangers sharing plates in a candle-lit shipping container in Newcastle’s creative Ouseburn Valley or this summer’s main event, dining amongst the Castles and beaches of the islands off Northumberland’s beautiful coast with the National Trust. Convivial dining is at the heart of it. It is all about the experience as well as something tasty to eat.” Anna will be hosting more supper clubs in the Ouse Street Arts Club shipping containers over autumn and winter, announcing dates on her blog and Twitter, as well as exciting “wintery collaborations” with the National Trust at Lindisfarne Castle. the-grazer.blogspot.co.uk

John Connell and Sally Walker have quite a food pedigree between them. John, originally from New Zealand, was named North East Chef of the Year in 2012 and has worked with everyone from Marco Pierre White to Gordon Ramsay. Sally, meanwhile trained with the acclaimed Roux brothers and had her own award-winning restaurant, Stepping Stones, in Ireland before landing in the North East. So far unable to find the perfect venue for their own restaurant, John and Sally are offering pop-up events around the region, along with private dining. They even allow clients to hire their own home kitchen, or create bespoke dinner parties, like the Roaring Twenties themed birthday bash they just catered for. “We’ve done events at Summerhill Square in Newcastle and Gosforth Cricket Club, where we’ve held tapas nights,” explains Sally. “We’ve also got more events at Gosforth and, hopefully, in Whitley Bay, in the pipeline over autumn and winter. Between John and myself, we’ve got a wide knowledge of food so there’s nothing we haven’t been able to cook, so far anyway.” SALLY WALKER 07554 002 150 OR FOLLOW ON TWITTER @SALLYWALKER8

Lulu Cooks Chinese When Lulu Chai first left her home town of Xi’an, China, at the age of 18, she missed Chinese home cooking. “Whether it was my mum’s pork dumplings or my dad’s homemade spicy sausage, one thing was clear,” says Lulu, “if I wanted to eat it here in the UK, I was going to have to learn to make it myself.” Now living in Newcastle, not only has Lulu learned to make the traditional meals she grew up eating, she is also teaching others to cook and showcasing ‘real’ Chinese food at supper clubs she holds in her own home. Lulu’s next event is a dinner party at her ‘secret home restaurant’ on October 13th. TEL 0191 209 6502, www.lulucookschinese.co.uk

Supper clubs and pop-up restaurants are no longer the preserve of London, Havana and New York - just ask Julie and Charlie Gibbs of Freddie's Bistro in the Gateshead suburb of Low Fell. Every Friday and Saturday night the couple open up their Victorian terraced home so groups of up to eight can enjoy a truly home-cooked meal with dishes like lobster bisque, slow-braised shin of beef and rhubarb & ginger cheesecake. Since the idea was conceived last year word, has spread fast and it's often booked up months in advance. "We fell in love with the idea of a supper club after hearing about it from friends in London," says Julie. "We felt that we could give our love of cooking and meeting new people our own personal twist by creating a fabulous, sociable dining experience with great food in Low Fell." Diners bring their own alcohol and are asked to pay what they feel the food is worth, although there's a suggested guide of £25 for three courses and £28 for four. Since everyone sits together - often two groups of four friends - it's a great chance to meet new people too. Although a full-time HR manager, Charlie has a background in the licensed trade and a passion for cooking while part time teacher Julie adores baking and also serves afternoon tea every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 1pm for around £12 per head. "Lots of people say we should open a proper restaurant but that would take away what makes it unique," adds Julie. As for Freddie, he's not the chef but the couple's gorgeous wire haired fox terrier. ention rowing and most people immediately think of the ‘blues’ of Oxford and Cambridge. But, the North East has an impressive rowing heritage of its own. Tyne Rowing Club, in Newburn, is one of the oldest sports clubs in the country – and now has plans to take its members firmly into the 21st century. Founded in 1852, the club helped to attract some of the most famous sportsmen of the time to the River Tyne, with races involving the great three – Harry Clasper, James Renforth and Robert Chambers attracting thousands of spectators. Now, Tyne Rowing Club is pushing into the future with plans for a new boathouse to replace its current outdated home. With a member legacy of £250,000, the club is hoping to raise more money for the £500,000 building through Sport England and other

fundraising activities. The aim is to be able to create a more fit-for-purpose base along with increasing membership and providing more youth training opportunities for the local community, as currently there is a waiting list. That local, community feel is personified by captain Ken Hardy, whose father and grandfather both rowed at Newburn. Now, his daughters Danielle and Natalie, known in rowing circles as the Hardy Sisters, are taking on the family tradition. “There is this elitist view of rowing,” says chairman Simon Dobson. “I was brought up in Pegswood, but we’ve got folk from the local community, like Ken and his family, who row here and are very successful nationally. We want to be able to offer more for our members, and involve the community more too.” Tyne Rowing Club, Water Row, Newburn, NE15 8NL, tel 0191 267 3827, www.tynerowingclub.org
