Biden understands first-hand impact layoffs can have on family: White House

The remarks came amid massive job cuts in major tech companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook that have rendered many Indian-American IT professionals jobless

US President Joe Biden understands first-hand the crushing impact losing a job can have on a family, the White House has said, amid the massive layoffs by major tech companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook that have rendered thousands of IndianAmerican IT professionals jobless.

On January 20, Google axed 12,000 jobs across the globe, its CEO Sundar Pichai announced, becoming the latest tech giant after Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon to retrench staff en mass amid the global economic downturn. Last week, Microsoft announced 10,000

job cuts, or nearly 5 per cent of its workforce.

Amazon was also cutting 18,000 jobs, and Facebook parent Meta was trimming 11,000 positions.

The bloodbath in the tech sector that began last year is continuing into 2023.

Joe Biden: US to send 31 tanks to Ukraine

President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that he would send M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine to help it defend against Russian invaders, a decision meant to unlock a wave of heavier aid by western allies in preparation for an expected escalation of fighting in the spring.

Speaking at the White House after a morning of telephone calls to European allies, Biden said that the US would send 31 Abrams tanks, the equivalent of a Ukrainian battalion, and that Germany would follow through by contributing its own Leopard 2 tanks and freeing other allies to send their own, the equivalent of two more battalions.

Her lawyer said on Wednesday the shooting was “entirely preventable”. Police have not announced any charges. The 6 January shooting - which authorities have described as “intentional” - rocked the Virginia city of Newport News, and raised questions about what legal consequences may follow and for whom.

Jean-Pierre assured that President Biden would do everything to make sure the US economy works for everyone.

Millions of Americans remain under a winter storm watch as a powerful winter storm pushes north east, leaving heavy snow, flash floods and severe thunderstorms in its wake.

The National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings on Wednesday, as the storm moved across north-west Florida and southern Georgia. It comes a day after a tornado ripped through Texas, causing severe destruction along its route. There have been no reported deaths. Dayton, Ohio, broke a 108-year-old record for snowfall after recording 5in (12cm) of snow Wednesday, according to the NWS.

Donald Trump to be allowed back onto Facebook and Instagram

In a statement, Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said the public “should be able to hear what their politicians are saying”.

The then-US president was indefinitely suspended from Facebook and Instagram after the Capitol riot in 2021.

Donald Trump will be allowed back on to Facebook and Instagram, after Meta announced it would be ending its twoyear suspension of his accounts. The suspension will end “in the coming weeks”, the social media giant said.

A Chinese engineer has been jailed for eight years for spying in the US, in a case linked to Chinese efforts to steal aviation trade secrets.

Ji Chaoqun, 31, had identified scientists and engineers for possible recruitment, according to the US Department of Justice.

UAE hints at huge investment in Pakistan amid economic turmoil

Pope Francis condemned “unjust” laws that criminalise homosexuality in an interview with The Associated Press that was published on Wednesday, adding that the Roman Catholic Church should do more to put an end to such legislation and that bishops should welcome LGBTQ people into the church, especially in those countries where such laws exist.

“Being homosexual isn’t a crime,” Francis said in the interview, adding that God loved all his children just as they are. He also called on bishops who support laws that punish or discriminate against the LGBTQ community, which exist in more than five dozen countries worldwide, to undergo a “process of conversion” and instead apply “tenderness”, he said, “as God has for each one of us”.

Zelensky urges speedy delivery of Western tanks

The royal dignitary arrived in Pakistan on a private visit and held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who received the UAE President at the Chandna Airport along with other government functionaries, Geo News reported. “Be prepared, the UAE will make a huge investment in Pakistan,” the sources quoted the UAE president as saying during a cordial meeting with the premier at the airport.

Shehbaz recalled his recent visit to the gulf country and emphasised that both countries would work on the understanding reached between the two leaders in various fields, during his visit to the UAE.

The UAE President said that the brotherly relations between the two countries went back many decades and his father, who had immense love for Pakistan and its people, laid the foundation of their bilateral ties.

The President also assured the Prime Minister that the UAE would always stand by Pakistan, Geo News reported.

G20: Singapore to support India

Ukraine’s president has thanked Western leaders for sending tanks to support the fight against Russia, but said they needed to be delivered quickly.

In his nightly address, Volodymyr Zelensky also urged the West to send long-range missiles and fighter jets. His comments came after the US and Germany announced they would send Abrams and Leopard tanks to Ukraine. Russia condemned the announcement

as a “blatant provocation” and said any supplied tanks would be destroyed. The tanks would “burn like all the rest,” said Dmitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman. “They are just very expensive.”Mr Zelensky said he told Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that “progress must be made in other aspects of our defence co-operation” - with Ukraine seeking supplies of longrange missiles and artillery.

Pakistan seeks US help to soften IMF terms

Singapore will strongly support India’s G20 priorities in today’s uncertain global landscape against the backdrop of the strained multilateral system, Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong has said.

India assumed the Presidency of the G20 for one year from December 1, 2022, to 30 November 2023. The theme of India’s presidency is “One Earth, One Family, One Future” which shows its commitment to ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family).

Islamabad: (IANS) Pakistan has turned to US authorities asking them to use their diplomatic influence for convincing the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to soften loan conditions as

the country is passing through a critical phase both economically and politically. This request was made by Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in his meeting with the visiting Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Department of the Treasury for Asia, Robert Kaproth, Geo News reported. The loan programme is stalled since months and the Shehbaz Sharif government is finding it hard to implement the lender’s conditions amid a tense political environment in the country with elections due in months.

London: British Home Secretary Suella Braverman is said to be on a collision course with the country’s education department over plans to cut the period of stay allowed for overseas students under a post-study visa route, according to a UK media report on Wednesday. The new Graduate Visa route, which allows foreign graduates - including Indians - the chance to stay on to job hunt and gain work experience for up to two years without the requirement of a specific job offer, is expected to be cut under Braverman’s proposed review.

According to ‘The Times’, the Indianorigin home secretary has drawn up a plan to “reform” the Graduate Visa route requiring students to obtain a work visa by getting a skilled job or leave the UK after six months. The newspaper refers to leaked advice to say that the UK Department for Education (DfE) is attempting to block the changes as they fear it would harm the UK’s attractiveness to international students. A government source who backs Braverman’s plan said the Graduate Visa was being increasingly used by students on short courses at “less respectable universities”.

Mike Pompeo On What Indian Leadership Told Him On Moving Away From China

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has claimed that India, which has charted an independent course on foreign policy, was forced to change its strategic posture and join the four-nation Quad grouping due to China’s aggressive actions.

India and China are locked in a lingering border standoff in eastern Ladakh for over 31 months. The bilateral relationship came under severe strain following the deadly clash in Galwan Valley in Eastern Ladakh in June 2020. India has

an

initiative of the government to celebrate 75 years of independence. Modi tweeted, “I wish that we move forward unitedly to fulfill the dreams of the country’s great freedom fighters. Happy Republic Day to all fellow Indians!”

In his latest book ‘Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love’ that hit the stores on Tuesday, Mike Pompeo called India the “wild card” in Quad

maintained that the bilateral relationship cannot be normal unless there is peace in the border area. In his latest book ‘Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love’ that hit the stores on Tuesday, Mr Pompeo called India the “wild card” in Quad because it was a nation founded on socialist ideology and spent the Cold War aligning with neither the US nor the erstwhile USSR.

“The country (India) has always charted its own course without a true alliance system, and that is still mostly the case. But China’s actions have caused India to change its strategic posture in the last few years,” Mr Pompeo wrote in his latest book.

Search giant Google has commemorated India’s 74th Republic Day with an artwork that uses intricately hand-cut paper and features iconic landmarks such as Rashtrapati Bhavan, India Gate, North Block and South Block, a contingent and motorcycle-borne ‘Daredevils’. The doodle depicts the letters ‘g’, ‘o’, ‘g’, ‘l’ and ‘e’ in lowercase black fonts while a circle over the dome of the President’s House symbolically represents the other ‘o’ in ‘Google’.

A peacock and floral patterns add a layer of charm to the art in monochrome.

In another move, the state government released the schedule for transfers and promotions of the employees. The process will begin on January 27. Online applications for the same will be accepted from January 28 to January 30.

Government school teachers had on Sunday staged a protest at Pragathi Bhavan demanding the scrapping of or amendment to the GO, saying injustice was being done to them.

Meanwhile, BJP state President Bandi Sanjay Kumar has demanded that the GO be scrapped immediately. He said the BRS government has kept the problem pending for two years.

Sanjay alleged hundreds of teachers were suffering due to the lacunae in the GO. He said as transfers of spouses were stopped in 13 districts, this was causing severe hardships to teachers. He claimed that 34 teachers committed suicide due to the GO.

So far solar panels have been installed in over 100 government schools and work orders have been issued for another 453 schools

Hyderabad: Over 500 government schools in the State will have access to solar power by March. Last year, the State government had announced that it would install rooftop solar systems in 1,521 government schools at a cost of Rs 32 crore in 12 districts.

According to officials at the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO), so far solar panels have been installed in over 100

Last September, TSREDCO had invited tenders for installation of solar panels and finalized 11 vendors. The selected vendors are installing 2 KW to 5 KW rooftop solar systems in the schools. The schools with over 200 enrollments have been selected for the installation of the solar panels. Out of the 1,521 government schools selected, 916 come under the Southern Power Distribution Company Limited and 605 are under the Northern Power Distribution Company Limited.

Officials said installation of solar panels would not only help in bringing down the annual power bills of the schools to a large extent but also help them in earning money through the excess power generated and transferred to the grid.

Madras HC reserves orders on petition against lawyers wearing gown before NCLT

Chennai: (IANS) The Madras High Court on Monday reserved its judgment on a petition filed by an advocate against an order of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) that lawyers should wear gowns while appearing before its bench.

A division bench comprising of Justices R. Mahadevan and Mohammed Shaffiq reserved the orders on a petition filed by advocate R. Rajesh, arguing that a division bench of Justice K. Ravichandra Babu (since retired) and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam passed an interim stay on the notification issued by the NCLT registrar.

The petitioner said that the NCLT registrar was again demanding the advocates to wear the gown before the benches of the NCLT without complying with the interim stay.

“The notification and subsequent orders passed by the NCLT Registrar is illegal, arbitrary and devoid of merits,” he argued.

He also said that the grounds of the interim stay by the Madras High Court was that the notification is against the rules of the Bar Council Of India, which state that advocates should wear a gown while they are appearing before High Courts and Supreme Court.

Advocate S.R. Raghunathan, who represented the Bar Council of India, supported the petitioner’s argument and stated that the NCLT registrar could not issue such a statement as it was against the Bar Council of India rules.

The BCI’s counsel said that they had sent a notice to the NCLT registrar against the new order issued despite an interim stay order by the Madras High Court division bench. Counsel said that the registrar had withdrawn the order after receiving the notice.

Confirming the identities of two men, Dass said that the Indian High Commission in Wellington was in touch with the victims’ families in India.

United North Piha Surf Lifesaving Club president Robert Ferguson told Herald that a lifeguard in the tower spotted two people in the water near the river mouth around 200 metres from Lion Rock.

Wellington: (IANS) Two Indian men lost their lives while trying to swim in one of the most dangerous spots at Piha Beach, located west of Auckland in New Zealand, media reports said.

Saurin Nayankumar Patel, 28 and Anshul Shah, 31, who had arrived from Ahmedabad last year on a work visa, did not know how to swim and drowned last week, The NZ Herald reported. Patel was an electrical engineer, while Shah worked as a cashier at a gas station and arrived here in November 2022. They were roommates.

“It is a massive tragedy for the Indian community, the loss of these two men, and our thoughts go out to their families,” Indian High Commission

“By the time the lifeguards had got to the position where the swimmers had gone in and put their tubes and fins on and swam out, they were gone,” Ferguson said. He added that the spot where the two chose to swim was one of the most dangerous on the beach.

“Where they went in I wouldn’t have gone in,” Ferguson told The NZ Herald. hE said it was an enormous response with off-duty lifeguards, rescue boats, police, paramedics and locals with expert health skills.

Resuscitation efforts started immediately after the pair was found, but it was too late. Givealittle page has been created to raise funds to send their bodies back to India.

‘Sikh’ struck on head in hate-motivated assault in Canada

Toronto: (IANS) A man, apparently a Sikh, was allegedly struck on the head, causing his turban to fall on the ground, by an unidentified man, who also made “derogatory comments” at a subway station in Canada, police said.

Police officers responded to an assault call at the Bloor-Yonge Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway station following the incident last week.

Upon reaching the scene, police found that a man had been struck on the head causing his “religious head covering” --

which they later identified as turban -- to fall on the ground.

The suspect allegedly passed derogatory comments at the victim before he left the TTC station, the Toronto Police said in

a statement. The victim, whose age or religious affiliation were not released by the police, sustained minor injuries on his head.

However, a report in Omni News, a multicultural and multilingual broadcaster in Canada, confirmed the identity of the victim as Sikh in its report. The suspect was last seen wearing a blue hat and a black jacket and was carrying a black bag.“After consultation with the specialised Hate Crime Unit, the investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence,” the

Toronto police said in its statement.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said police are investigating the hate-motivated assault of a man at the subway station. “Our transit system - and city at large - must be safe places for all and free of hatred, without exception,” Tory tweeted after the incident.“Hate has no place in our city. We must all call out and stand together against discrimination and violence,” he said.

Condemning the incident, the Toronto Transit Commission said that they will continue to assist Toronto Police in the course of their investigation.

An Indian Princess in America: Padmaja Kumari Parmar of Udaipur

Padmaja Kumari Parmar is also the founder of The Friends of Mewar foundation, which works towards preserving cultural heritage, providing healthcare, and promoting women’s empowerment and education. She spends her time running the charity and bringing jobs and medicine to the rural women of Udaipur.

It will be an understatement to say that Padmaja Kumari Parmar comes from an illustrious background. After all, belonging to a former royal family that have been custodians of the scenic city of Udaipur in Rajasthan for nearly 1400 years is in itself a delightful segment from history. Growing up in the palaces in Udaipur, Padmaja Kumari was acutely aware of her legacy and the responsibility that her family felt towards the people of Mewar. As an adult, she traveled to the US and made Boston her home, where she lives with her husband Prince Kush Singh Parmar of Santrampur and her two kids.

She talks to Hi India from her cozy Boston home about growing up as a princess and how she balances her charity work in rural India and her fast-paced life in America

Let us begin with your illustrious background. Tell us about your family history back in India. Take us back a few generations and help us understand more about the royal title and what it means?

Boston based Padmaja Kumari Parmar comes from the former royal family of Mewar in Rajasthan, India. Her father Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar is the 76th Custodian of the House of Mewar

My family has been the custodians of Mewar, now the area more popularly known as Udaipur in Rajasthan, India for nearly 1400 years. Acknowledged as the world’s longest serving dynasty, it all started when Maharishi Harit Rashi, a guru or teacher, and devotee of Shree Eklingnath Ji entrusted the responsibility of the right to worship and administer the land of Mewar as a religious blessing to his student, my ancestor Bappa Rawal in 734 AD. We are believed to have descended from the Sun, Suryavanshis, tracing the lineage from Lord Rama from the Sanskrit epic Ramayana through his elder son Lav. This is when the kingdom of Mewar came into being. However, as time went on, and specifically in 1947, India stood as an independent, democratic nation, free from British rule, and titles of the royals were abolished as their states were merged into the Union of India. Out of sheer necessity, and due to our commitment to our community the concept of custodianship was born. A custodianship is a sort of unwritten contract, a pledge that my family makes with every generation to protect the heritage that we have been given responsibility for. It is not a written constitution, yet it survives because we are fully aware of our obligation to uphold this legacy. This notion makes Udaipur for me not just my hometown, but a region where history, culture, and tradition are deeply intertwined with my value ethos of self-respect, selfreliance, service to the community, and respect for humanity.

Since the founding, through India’s 75 years of Independence, and beyond there has been a long line of my ancestors who provided for the people of Udaipur and protected the tangible and intangible heritage for the next generation no matter what challenges stood in their way. This was the driving force that prompted my grandfather, Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar to establish the public charitable trust the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF) in 1969 on the principle of custodianship with the vision ‘to serve and assist every individual to realize a special status in the hierarchy of God’s creation, and to serve as a temple of inspiration to future generations. In 1984, my father Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar became the 76th Custodian of the House of Mewar and conceptualized Eternal Mewar to provide the vision for the 21st century. It expresses, embodies, and encompasses the core values, principles, and the legacy of the House of Mewar that has emerged as a unique heritage brand exemplifying hospitality, cultural preservation, philanthropy, education, sports, and spirituality for global audiences. Did you ever have to explain the title to people in America, now that you live here? What has been the reaction like? Is there interest and intrigue in knowing more?

Absolutely! And many times. It’s an unfamiliar concept in many ways, so it has been an interesting journey to find my voice in explaining its relevance. As we know,

Daughter of the famous Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar, Padmaja Kumari Parmar talks to the Hi India about her charity that helps rural women in Udaipur and what it means to be a modern-day princess

India is a democracy, and in today’s time Royalty might not be expected, but if something is part of your DNA, you can’t really change that. Udaipur and the House of Mewar are part of me. I view my role as a moral responsibility; I must carry myself in a manner that the people of Udaipur can be proud of. I come from a school of thought where responsibility is a privilege, not a burden.

Tell us about your move to the US. When did it happen. How has it been like? What cities you lived/ studied in. Take us through your early years in the US

My first experience in the US was as an undergrad at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. I had the opportunity to live and work in New York for a couple of years for The Four Seasons as a special services representative. I was still very involved with family philanthropy and business back in Udaipur. I thought that I was done with my America stint and I would return home for good, but my now husband came along and disrupted that path, for which of course I am most grateful. We got married in 2011, moved to Boston, and we have been living in Boston ever since. The contrast between my two homes in India and in the U.S. has brought new perspectives and a greater appreciation of both places. I continue to navigate the differences between the East and the West to the best of my ability. It’s an enjoyable journey, though not without its challenges. At forty-two, being a mother of two has made me feel the most bulletproof in comparison to any other experience I’ve had thus far.

Tell us everything about Friends of Mewar. Why did you think of setting it up? What initiatives you all undertake. How does it all work?

There are so many driving forces that inspired me to start Friends of Mewar!

How to showcase everything that the great little region of Mewar has, what it can tell the world, and how many ways it can inspire people – with tales of incredible leaders, is one of the many driving forces that inspired me to start Friends of Mewar after moving to the United States. Friends of Mewar’s core objectives are preserving cultural heritage, enabling access to preventive healthcare, and promoting women’s empowerment and education. At Friends of Mewar, we believe that the most effective way to improve the quality of life in the underserved sections of society is to provide educational opportunities, and preventive healthcare, and make strides toward strengthening and preserving the rich culture that has always been a proud part of our Mewar heritage.

Not Familiar With BBC Documentary, Very Familiar With Shared Values: US

The White House spokesman stressed the fact that the partnership that the US shares with India is exceptionally deep and that both nations share the values that are common to American democracy and to Indian democracy.

Washington: “I’m not familiar with the documentary you’re referring to, however, I am very familiar with the shared values that enact the United States and India as two thriving and vibrant democracies,” US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Monday, responding to a media query on a BBC documentary on Prime

Calling India’s democracy a vibrant one, he said “we look to everything that ties us together, and we look to reinforce all of those elements that tie us together,” as he underlined the diplomatic ties that US and India share with each other. He also stressed the fact that the partnership that the US shares with India is exceptionally deep and that both nations share the values that are common to American democracy and to Indian democracy.

Minister Narendra Modi which has sparked controversy since its release. Addressing a press briefing on Monday (local time), Price said that there are numerous elements that bolster the US’ global strategic partnership with India which include political, economic and exceptionally deep people-to-people ties.

“I’m not aware of this documentary that you point to, but I will say broadly, is that there are a number of elements that undergird the global strategic partnership that we have with our Indian partners.

There are close political ties, there are economic ties, and there are exceptionally deep people-to-people ties between the United States and India. But one of those additional elements are the values that we share the values that are common to American democracy and to Indian democracy,” he added.

Last week, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi and distanced himself from the BBC documentary series, saying he “doesn’t agree with

the characterisation” of his Indian counterpart.

Mr Sunak made these remarks on the controversial documentary that was raised in the British Parliament by Pakistan-origin MP Imran Hussain. “The UK government’s position on this has been clear and longstanding and hasn’t changed, of course, we don’t tolerate persecution where it appears anywhere but I am not sure I agree at all with the characterisation that the honourable gentleman has put forward to,” Mr Sunak said while responding to Hussain’s question on the BBC report.

UK’s national broadcaster BBC aired a two-part series attacking PM Narendra Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister during the Gujarat riots of 2002. The documentary sparked outrage and was removed from select platforms. The Ministry of External Affairs responded to the BBC story by claiming that it was entirely biased.

While addressing a weekly presser in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “We think this is a propaganda piece. This has no objectivity. This is biased. Do note that this hasn’t been screened in India. We don’t want to answer more on this so that this doesn’t get much dignity.”

He even raised questions on “the purpose of the exercise and the agenda behind it.”

“The documentary is a reflection of the agency and individuals that are peddling this narrative again. It makes us wonder about the purpose of the exercise and the agenda behind it; frankly, we do not

wish to dignify these efforts,” he added. Referring to apparent remarks made by former UK Secretary Jack Straw in the documentary series, Mr Bagchi said “He (Jack Straw) seems to be referring to some internal UK report. How do I have access to that? It’s a 20-year-old report. Why would we jump on it now? Just because Jack Straw says it how do they lend it that much legitimacy.”

“I heard words like inquiry and investigations. There is a reason why we use the colonial mindset. We don’t use words loosely. What inquiry they were diplomats there...investigation, are they ruling the country?” Mr Bagchi asked.

Prominent Indian-origin UK citizens condemned the series. Prominent UK citizen Lord Rami Ranger said the “BBC caused a great deal of hurt to over a billion Indians.”

Furthermore, the US Department spokesperson also said that the US has always called for regional stability in South Asia and that its relationships with India and Pakistan stand on their own.

He further stated that the pace and scope of dialogue between India and Pakistan is clearly a matter for the two countries. ‘We’ve long called for regional stability in South Asia. Our relationships with India & Pakistan stand on their own and we don’t see them as zero-sum. But pace, scope & character of any dialogue between India & Pakistan is a matter for the two countries,” Price said during the briefing.

US Media Sees Massive Job Cuts Amid Falling Newsroom Employment

2021 study by the Pew Research Center, with local media hit especially hard.

“Journalism has been under pressure for a long time, and a number of companies seem to think this is an opportune time to reduce their labour costs - hurting both journalists and journalism,” the Writers Guild of America, East said in a statement to AFP.

The union comprises journalists from NBC and MSNBC. The two outlets, which declined an AFP request for comment, bid farewell to some 75 employees, according to US media.

A similar announcement is dreaded at the Washington Post, where CEO Fred Ryan warned last month that “a number of positions” will be cut in the following weeks, adding that the layoffs would affect “a single digit percentage of our employee base” of some 2,500 people.

Hires for other positions can continue, the paper said.

The Washington Post Magazine, the paper’s Sunday supplement which won two Pulitzer prizes, was shut down in December as part of what executive editor Sally Buzbee described in a memo as the paper’s “global and digital transformation.”

And Vice Media CEO Nancy Dubuc announced to her staff Friday that the company is up for sale.

‘Steep, secular decline’

Vox Media, owner of the Vox and the landmark New York Magazine, has announced it was letting go 7% of its staff

From CNN to the Washington Post, US media are facing tough times, as a series of outlets have announced layoffs this winter amid fears of an economic downturn.

Vox Media, owner of the Vox and The Verge websites as well as the landmark New York Magazine and its online platforms, announced Friday it was letting go seven percent of its staff.

The news follows layoffs at CNN, NBC, MSNBC, Buzzfeed, and other outlets.

In a memo to staff on Friday, Vox Media CEO Jim Bankoff announced “the difficult decision to eliminate roughly seven percent of our staff roles across departments due to the challenging economic environment impacting our business and industry.”

The memo, which was confirmed to AFP by Vox Media, said the affected employees were going to be notified of being let go within the next 15 minutes. That would mean some 130 out of the group’s 1,900 staff.

Meghan McCarron, an award-winning journalist who spent more than nine years at Eater, a food website owned by Vox Media, tweeted Friday she was among those laid off -- while 37 weeks pregnant.

“My partner and I are so excited to become parents,” McCarron posted.

“I can’t really process the amount of uncertainty we’re now facing,” she added.

A Vox spokesperson told AFP they could not comment on specific cases, but that employees were offered “competitive severance packages,” including extra severance pay for those with “a nearterm upcoming parental leave planned.”

Journalists who were laid off from other organizations in recent weeks have also taken to Twitter to express anger, dismay, or gratitude to their colleagues, while beginning to look for a new job.

“I’ll be figuring out my next move. I’m a data reporter but I also write and produce,” tweeted Emily Siegel, who was let go after five years as an investigative

reporter at NBC. “I’d love to keep doing this work. My (direct messages) are open.”

‘Under pressure for a long time’ While the media layoffs were not as dramatic as those rocking tech giants such as Microsoft and Google, which announced Friday it was cutting 12,000 more jobs, they were a consequence of falling advertising revenue amid a gloomy economic climate, said Chris Roush, dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.

“For a lot of them, they grew and expanded on the expectation that they were going to be able to grow their audience, or either readers or viewers to a certain level,” Roush told AFP.” And that just hasn’t happened and is unlikely to happen given what’s happening in the economy.”

Newsroom employment has seen a steady decline in the United States, falling from 114,000 to 85,000 journalists between 2008 and 2020, according to a

In recent months, CNN has laid off an estimated several hundred workers out of a total of some 4,000 people, according to US media. CNN would not confirm those figures to AFP.

The cuts took place as the company underwent a restructuring following a merger between Warner Media, which includes CNN and HBO Max, and Discovery. The merger resulted in the creation of the Warner Bros. Discovery mega conglomerate.

Following the merger, CNN’s new parent company abruptly pulled the plug on the network’s $100 million streaming service CNN+.

Naveen Sarma, a senior media analyst with S&P Global Rating, noted a “steep, secular decline” of traditional broadcast and cable television in the United States, leading to a dramatic drop in subscriptions to paid TV.

“That’s a constant ongoing struggle for all these companies to come in,” said Mr Sarma. Roush of Quinnipiac University says the changes were especially painful for smaller media.

“CNN, Washington Post, those are not going away, but a smaller company, they have bigger issues, because they’re just smaller and not as well established as a media brand,” he said.

Celebrated Architect BV Doshi Dies:

“Pole Star In World Of Architecture”

Ahmedabad: Well-known architect and Padma Bhushan recipient Balkrishna Doshi, who worked with legends like Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, died at 95 at his home here on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those who paid rich tributes to Doshi. “We are deeply saddened to inform you about the passing away of Balkrishna Doshi (August 26, 1927-January 24, 2023), loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather,” his family said in a statement.

Condolences poured in from various quarters over the demise of Doshi, widely regarded as the foremost architect of modern India. “Dr BV Doshi Ji was a brilliant architect and a remarkable institution builder. The coming generations will get glimpses of his greatness by admiring his rich work across India. His passing

away is saddening. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” tweeted PM Modi.

Born in 1927 in Pune, Doshi worked with architecture legends like Le Corbusier. He also worked with Louis Kahn as an associate to build the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and many other acclaimed projects. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel called Doshi the Pole Star in the world of architecture. “Condolences on the passing away of Pritzker Prize winner ‘Padma Bhushan’ Balakrishna Doshiji, a world-renowned architect who is like the pole star in the world of architecture. May God rest his soul and give strength to his family, countless fans and disciples to bear this shock,” he said in a tweet in Gujarati.

I don’t choose movies on basis of medium

For Rajkummar Rao, the first month of 2023 has been a mix of something old and something new. While he has shot for his maiden music video Achha sila diya, the actor is gearing up to return to the all-familiar world of Stree 2. Mounting the sequel to a successful film like Stree (2018) is not easy. Rao is aware of the fact, as he says, “We are in the writing process, and will take the film on floors soon. The team is being careful with the writing, considering it is a huge responsibility.”

Rao’s run at the movies in 2022 mirrored that of Bollywood, which

[They could’ve made] a courtesy call.”

witnessed only a handful of big-screen hits. The actor’s two theatrical offerings — Badhaai Do, and HIT: The First Case — failed to set the cash registers ringing, whereas his OTT offering Monica O My Darling received a thunderous response. As the divide between the big-screen euphoria and the intimate experience of the digital platforms grows wider, Rao emphasises that the story matters, not the medium. “I don’t choose movies on the basis of medium. Nor do [I determine] which film I should do for the big screen, and which for OTT. We should stop categorising films like that. For me, the fun lies in the process of making a movie. I am sure if we made Newton [2017] today, so many people would say it is an OTT film. But it did so well at the theatres.”

“I’m only doing stories that I believe in. I am pushing myself as an actor. As long as the economics of your film is right, there is nothing to worry about. All we know is to make a film with utmost sincerity and within the right budget. If it’s a good story, it will find its place.”

Did Sidharth Malhotra, Kiara Advani consult Kjo’s pandit for their wedding date?

There is going to be a band, baaja and all the tamasha when it comes to Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra’s wedding in February. Karan Johar not only predicted and teased the audience with gossip about the couple’s impending nuptials on his Koffee couch, but has also passed on his pandit’s contact details to get the duo’s horoscopes matched, informs an insider. While Malhotra and Advani, who met at the wrap-up party of Lust Stories and began dating on the set of Shershaah, remain tight-lipped about their wedding, their lovey-dovey interactions don’t go unnoticed. A source informs, “Sidharth and Kiara have become more open about their relationship in recent times. At the special screening of Mission Majnu this week, Kiara dropped in to meet Sid, stayed back to watch the movie, post which she left with him.

Female at the forefront

From Begum Jaan (2017) to Shabaash Mithu (2022), filmmaker Srijit Mukherji has a knack for bringing stories that have spirited women at their centre. Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke is no exception. The upcoming series celebrates the courage of cops by telling the story of IPS officer Kavya Iyer, essayed by Regina Cassandra. When approaching womenled stories, Mukherji says the idea is to treat them on par with men, right at the outset. He explains, “I have always avoided underlining the fact that a woman is doing all this. Underlining it is a great disservice because then, you are assuming that she is not supposed to do so. I have treated it the same way as I would have if a man was doing it. The only addition is that she is [depicted] as a single mother. So, she has an additional responsibility.”

The ZEE5 series is inspired by true events, and sheds light on the complexities police officers face in fulfilling their duties. Finding the right balance between facts and fiction is key to such a project. “The first thing that we worked on is determining how much to fictionalise. Also, since it is inspired by events from across the country, we wanted to make it a pan-India show in terms of locations, and missions. We shot it in Shillong, Kerala and Jaipur.”

Aditya Roy Kapur, Anil Kapoor launch the ‘The Night Manager’

The trailer launch of the upcoming web series ‘The Night Manager’ featuring Aditya Roy Kapur, Anil Kapoor, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ravi Behl and others took place at Alibag on Friday.

Anil Kapoor plays Shailendra Rungta an arms dealer with Aditya playing his ‘Night Manager’ Shaan Sengupta. The series is the Indian adaptation of the hit international show of the same name.

Speaking about the Indian version director Sandeep Modi said, “The vision was to maintain the purity of the story. We put in a lot of effort and I’m hoping the audience will relate to it as an Indian story.”

Opening up about his role with grey shades Anil Kapoor said, “A character should make me nervous that I haven’t done this before and I’ll fall flat on my face. If I get that feeling as my first instinct, that anxiety draws me to a role. I go with my instinct. Aditya is honest, sincere and hardworking. I’m confident he is going to surprise all of you.”

Kay Kay Menon plays counterfeiting kingpin in ‘Farzi’

Actor Kay Kay Menon never fails to enthrall the audience with his versatile acting. Raj and DK’s web series ‘Farzi’ is no exception.

In the show, Menon will be seen portraying the role of a counterfeiting kingpin, who has kept Michael aka Vijay Serthupathi on his toes as he sets out to catch him and eradicate the counterfeiting network.

“I have been fortunate to get such varied roles to play in the digital space. My character in Farzi is outlandish and has his own swag. Very interesting for an actor to push the act to the edge and yet keep consistency throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed it as it’s something that you, as a performer, are not quite sure of and you look at your directors’ reaction eagerly after every take to see if you have hit the note each time.

I walk in knowing nothing: Vishal

There are some matters that Vishal Dadlani won’t talk about, like the Pathaan track, Besharam rang, which emerged to be among the best performing songs of 2022, but was mired in controversy with fans stating that it resembled a bunch of old numbers. Then, there are matters on which he pours his heart out, like his work on the recently concluded Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge musical, Come Fall in Love, an international production that offered Dadlani, along with his long-time collaborator Sheykhar Ravjiani, a once-in-alifetime opportunity.

Considering the fact that musical adaptations of Bollywood films are a rarity, we are eager to know what transpired behind the scenes as the cult classic found a theatrical adaptation in San Deigo. Stating that the project “changed our sensibilities”, Dadlani says, “Dilwale is the fabric for modern pop culture. We worked with Nell Benjamin, who is a multi-Tony Award-winning [composer], and we learnt a lot about approaching music [from a place of] joy. [We were told to] let the lyrics speak to us, and by the end of each page, we [usually] had the song [conceived]. We got 60 standing ovations, and our crowd comprised both American viewers, and individuals who had flown from Mumbai to see it,” he relives the experience, as though it occurred yesterday.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot Is Executing Her Plan To Improve Public Safety

CHICAGO, IL – At the first mayoral debate tonight, opponents are tossing around borrowed policy proposals, empty promises, and slick one-liners, especially when it comes to tackling public safety — but Mayor Lori Lightfoot is actually doing the work to reduce crime and make Chicago safer for all residents.

For Mayor Lightfoot, nothing is more important than safety in our neighborhoods, and that’s why she is “invest[ing] more money in public safety than the mayors before her” to address the “root causes of crime” and make Chicago the “safest big city in the country.”

While her opponents are all talk, Mayor Lightfoot is hard at work implementing aggressive short-term and long-term strategies to make every neighborhood safer — and her plan is working. Her ongoing Safer Chicago Plan includes:

• Increasing the Chicago Police Department’s budget by $64 million in 2023 to a total of nearly $2 billion;

• Removing more than 12,700 illegal guns from Chicago streets in 2022 — more than any other police department in the country;

• Hiring more than 950 new officers in 2022, even amid a nationwide police staffing shortage;

• Creating the Mayor’s Office of Violence Reduction to drive a proactive approach to preventing violence and support impacted communities;

• Investing $25 million to launch the first “citywide strategic plan” to address gender-based violence and human trafficking; and more.

• Increasing funding for street outreach and community approaches to violence reduction by 1400%; and

• Launching the Community Safety Coordination Center to coordinate every city agency — not just the police — to address the root causes of violence.

Burglars Break Into Texas Hindu Temple, Steal Donation Box: Report

BRAZZOS VALLEY, TX Jan 20 (IANS)

The Indian community was left in a state of shock after burglars broke into a Hindu temple in the US state of Texas and stole its donation box, the media reported.

The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office said they are investigating the burglary at Shri Omkarnath Temple located in Brazos Valley, Texas, which took place on January 11.

“There was a break-in. They (burglars) broke in through the side window and what was immediately…missing was our donation box and a safe in which we kept our valuables,” Srinivasa Sunkari, a board member of the Shri Omkarnath Temple, told KBTX news channel.

According to the report, a video captured by security cameras inside the temple showed a person walking straight to the donation box. He then used the temple’s cart to wheel the box out the door.

“There was a sense of invasion, that sense of loss of privacy when something like this happened to us,” Sunkari, told the

news channel.

He said the priest and his family, who live in an apartment right behind the temple, are safe, adding that the community members were notified

about the incident at a gathering. “We will rebound, we will take extra precautions to make sure our priest is safe and this family is safe and our place of worship is safe. And we hope

that something like this doesn’t happen to anybody in the future,” a shocked Sunkari said. Condemning the incident, the HinduPact, an advocacy collective in the US, has asked the FBI for a thorough probe into the incident.

“Yet another Hindu Mandir violated. @FBI please investigate this,” the HinduPact tweeted on Friday.

The incident comes close on the heels of two Hindu temples in Australia that were defaced with anti-India graffiti by alleged Khalistan supporters on January 12 and 17. Condemning the incidents in strongest terms, India said it has taken up the matter with the Australian government and expects investigation and speedy action against the perpetrators.

In August last year, the Tulsi Mandir in Queens, New York, was desecrated and a Mahatma Gandhi statue outside the temple premises was broken into pieces. The Hindu American Foundation in a statement demanded increased security after a series of attacks and robberies at Hindu temples across the country.

MTA Announces ‘Open Stroller’ Pilot Program For 1K Buses

Indian Sentenced In US For $3.5mn Drug Smuggling Conspiracy

A 34 year-old Manish Kumar has been sentenced to 87 months in prison for operating a pharmacy that sold unapproved prescription drugs and controlled substances, including opioids, and shipped them from Asia into the US.

New York, Jan 21 (IANS) A 34 year-old Indian has been sentenced to 87 months in prison for operating a pharmacy that sold unapproved prescription drugs and controlled substances, including opioids, and shipped them from Asia into the US.

NEW YORK, NY— Fewer frazzled parents will deal with the hassle of closing up strollers when they board MTA buses, officials said Tuesday. An open strollers pilot program will expand to 1,000 city buses, or roughly one-sixth the entire fleet, in the coming weeks, said Frank Annicaro, NYC Transit’s senior vice president of buses.

“Overwhelmingly positive” feedback from riders and bus drivers on the pilot’s first phase prompted officials’ to decide to expand, Annicaro said.

“We have no reported incidents related to open strollers on our pilot buses,” he said.

Passengers have long had to fold strollers before they could board the city’s often-cramped buses.

The federal court in Boston ordered Manish Kumar ro pay a fine of $100,000 and sentenced him to more than seven years in prison and three months of supervised release, a statement by US attorney office, Massachusetts, said.

Kumar was a partner in Mihu Business Solutions Pvt, Ltd — a Mumbai-based drug company which he operated through multiple entities, including “All Herb Distributors”, “365 Life Group”, and “Health Life 365 Co”.

From at least 2015 until 2019, he used these entities to ship millions of illegal and unapproved prescription pills into the US to individuals who did not have prescriptions, the statement said.

He trafficked prescription drugs, including generic erectile dysfunction drugs, and Schedule II controlled substances, such as hydrocodone,

oxycodone and tapentadol, and Schedule IV controlled substances, such as tramadol.

Kumar’s operation directly marketed drugs to customers in the US through advertising and calls to prospective customers from call centers in India.

Man Arrested For Allegedly Trying Sell Tiger Cub On Social Media

PHOENIX, AZ – A man who police say was in illegal possession of a tiger cub and tried to sell the animal has been arrested.

Phoenix Police say 25-year-old Carlos Eduardo Castro Alcaraz was arrested on Jan. 23. An investigation began after officers received a tip that Alcaraz was trying to sell a baby tiger on social medias for $25,000. Detectives reportedly posed as buyers, and negotiated a price of $20,000.

The tiger was recovered as officers served a search warrant at a home near 27th Avenue and Baseline Road. “When they were doing that search warrant, you could hear the tiger in the background moaning. You could hear that something wasn’t right,” said Sgt. Brian Bower with the Phoenix Police Department. “The tiger, specifically, was in a very small cage. Kind of a cage that you would find as a dog kennel. Approximately 2/3 feet.” Inside the home, officers also found several other animals, including baby snapping turtles and a baby American alligator in a small aquarium.

CBP Reminds Travelers Certain Agricultural Items Are Prohibited In The U.S.

SAN DIEGO, CA – U.S. Customs and Border Protection is reminding the traveling public to be mindful that certain agricultural items such as raw eggs and poultry from Mexico are prohibited from entry into the United States, and failure to declare these items may result in monetary penalties.

“There has been a large increase in the volume of prohibited food items, such as raw eggs and raw poultry meat, brought by travelers from Mexico. We would like to remind the traveling public that federal agricultural regulations remain in effect,” said Jennifer De La O, CBP Director of Field Operations in San Diego.

The ongoing outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu) is being blamed for increases in prices of eggs and poultry according to USDA’s Economic Research Service.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. This is the deadliest bird flu outbreak in history, and while the current bird flu outbreak is believed to initially have been spread by wild birds, previous outbreaks of this and other avian diseases like Newcastle disease have been linked to human movement of birds and avian products. Even a soiled bird cage or used egg carton could potentially spread these diseases. The USDA has issued guidance to zoos and bird keepers on how best to keep their birds healthy and reduce the risk from bird flu and other infectious diseases. TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey officials are warning residents about a new phishing scam impersonating the U.S. Postal Service that asks recipients to provide personal information by claiming a package can’t be delivered to their home.

Officials with the New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell issued an alert Tuesday about the “SMiShing” texts. According to officials, “smishing” is a form of phishing that uses text messages containing email addresses, phone numbers or links to websites. This specific scam, according to officials, capitalized on the holiday season by urging the recipient to click on a link in order to address an issue with a package delivery. When clicked, the link directs the recipient to a website imitating the U.S. Postal Service and asks them to provide personal information including their name, address, email address and phone number. The three students from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh had gone to the US only 10 days ago following their admission to Chicago’s Governors State University. They had taken an accommodation on rent in Chicago and were staying together. On Sunday evening, the trio went out to buy a router for Internet connection. While they were on their way to a shopping mall, two armed robbers waylaid them. The burglars ordered the students to hand over their mobile phones. They even shared the PIN to unlock the phones. The burglars also looted money from the students. While leaving the scene, the armed men opened fire. Devasnh and Sai Charan sustained bullet wounds while Laxman narrowly escaped.

The victims alerted police, who rushed there and shifted the injured to hospital. Devansh succumbed while undergoing treatment. Sai Charan was admitted to the University Medical Centre. He was said to be out of danger.

India Has Lost Presence In 26 Of 65 Patrol Points In Eastern Ladakh: Report

“Presently there are 65 PPs (Patrolling Points) starting from Karakoram pass to Chumur which are to be patrolled regularly by the ISFs (Indian Security Forces). Out of 65 PPs, our presence is lost in 26 PPs (i.e. PP no. 5-17, 24-32, 37, due to restrictive or no patrolling by the ISFs,” PD Nitya, the Superintendent of Police of Leh, Ladakh’s main city, wrote according to the research paper accessed by NDTV.

The report was filed at last week’s annual conference of the country’s top police officers in Delhi, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Morning shows of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan were cancelled at some theatres in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city on the day of the film’s release on Wednesday following protests by right-wing organisations.

The film has been opposed by some segments who claim its song called “Besharam Rang” hurts the sentiments of Hindus.

On Wednesday, activists of the Hindu Jagran Manch showed saffron flags at Sapna-Sangeeta cinema hall here in protest against the movie and recited Hanuman Chalisa, eyewitnesses said, adding that some of them also had sticks. Some of the protesters entered the theatre and asked the audience to move out.

The protesters said they would not allow the movie to be screened in the cinema hall.

Besides, Bajrang Dal activists also staged a protest against Pathaan at Kastur cinema hall in the city and shouted slogans against Shah Rukh Khan.

Outlook, Teams Services Down In India, Microsoft Probes Outage

Microsoft Corp said on Wednesday it was investigating an outage, which left thousands of users in India unable to access the website’s multiple services including Teams and Outlook. Downdetector.com, which tracks outages through a range of sources including user reports, showed there were more than 3,700 incidents of people reporting issues with Microsoft Teams in India.

The report was filed at last week’s annual conference of the country’s top police officers in Delhi, attended by PM Modi and Amit Shah.

New Delhi: India has lost access to 26 of 65 patrolling points in Eastern Ladakh, a report by a senior police officer in the union territory has said, in a worrying new disclosure amid the country’s standoff with China at various flashpoints along their tottery 3,500-km frontier.

After JNU, BBC Modi Documentary

to be shown at Jamia University today at 6 pm

Amid the high voltage drama over the BBC Modi Documentary screening controversy at JNU, the documentary is all set to be screened in the Jamia University. The screening will be conducted today at 6 pm.

The power connection to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus was abruptly cut down minutes before the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Modi, said several students taking to Twitter Tuesday night. The students also claimed that the stones were hurled at them on the campus, and a complaint to the police has been made in this regard.

As per reports, the internet connection to the offices of student union leaders was also disrupted. The JNU students protested outside a police station in Vasant Kunj after they marched there, claiming stones were pelted during the screening of a banned BBC documentary on PM Modi. “We filed a complaint, and police assured us they’ll be immediately looking into the incident. We gave the name & details of all the persons involved.

“Later on, China forces us to accept the fact that as such areas have not seen the presence of ISFs or civilians since long, the Chinese were present in these areas. This leads to a shift in the border under control of ISFs towards Indian side and a “buffer zone” is created in all such pockets which ultimately leads to loss of control over these areas by India. This tactic of PLA (China’s People’s Liberation Army) to grab land inchby-inch is known as ‘Salami slicing’,” it said.

“PLA has taken advantage of the buffer areas in the deescalation talks by placing their best of cameras on the highest peaks and monitoring the movement of our forces... they object our movement even in the buffer zone, claiming it to be ‘their’ area of operation and then further ask us to move back to create more ‘buffer’ areas,” the officer wrote.

22 acquitted in Godhra riots case

A court at Halol town in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district has acquitted 22 people, accused of killing 17 members of a minority community including two children, for want of evidence in a case stemming from the 2002 post-Godhra communal riots in the state.

According to the prosecution, the victims were killed on February 28, 2002 and their bodies burnt with an intention to destroy evidence. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Harsh Trivedi on Tuesday acquitted all the 22 accused, eight of whom died during the pendency of the case, defence lawyer Gopalsinh Solanki said.

“The court acquitted all the accused in the case of rioting and murder of 17 members of a minority community, including two children, in Delol village of the district for want of evidence, Solanki said. Communal riots had broken out in different parts of the state a day after a bogie of the Sabarmati Express was torched by a mob near Godhra town in Panchmahal district on February 27, 2002, killing 59 passengers, most of them ‘karsevaks’ returning from Ayodhya.

Congress’s AK Antony’s Son Quits Party, Cites Post On BBC Series On PM Modi

New Delhi: Congress veteran AK Antony’s son Anil K Antony has quit the party alleging “intolerant calls to retract a tweet” in which he had denounced a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and called it a “dangerous precedent”.

Anil Antony, who was part of the Congress’s social media cell in Kerala, shared his resignation letter on Twitter today and cited “abuses by ones supporting a trek to promote love” in a caustic reference to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra.

He alleged that he had received threat calls and hate messages “through the night”. “A lot of things that happened in the last 24 hours, especially from certain corners of Congress, have hurt me a lot,”

Anil Antony had called the BBC a state-sponsored channel while slamming the documentary on PM Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots.

he told news agency ANI. Anil Antony’s “redacted resignation letter” slammed the party leadership,

saying: “By now, I have been made well aware that you, your colleagues, and the coterie around the leadership are only keen to work with a bunch of sycophants and chamchas, who would unquestionably be at your beck and call. This has become the lone criterion of merit.” Yesterday, Anil Antony called the BBC a state-sponsored channel with a “long history of prejudices against India”, while slamming a two-part series focusing on PM Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The documentary, which investigates allegations linked to the 2002 Gujarat riots, has been slammed by the Ministry of External Affairs as a “propaganda piece designed to push a discredited narrative”. The documentary reflects a “colonial mindset”, the government said.

Indian American killed in Gas Station Robbery

“Grave Concern”: Minister On Supreme Court Making Public “Secret” Reports

Amid a tussle with the government, it was an unprecedented move by the Supreme Court to make public documents by intelligence agencies - RAW and the IB - on the government’s objections.

Amid a tussle with the government, it was an unprecedented move by the Supreme Court to make public documents by intelligence agencies - the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) - on the government’s objections.

Mr Rijiju said today that he would “react at an appropriate time” but made his views clear.

A 66-year-old Indian American employee Siboram Patro was killed in a deadly armed robbery. The Philadelphia Police Department has issued a $20,00 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Three masked robbers invaded the Exxon gas station on the 7100 block of Torresdale Avenue in Philadelphia around 4 am Tuesday according to surveillance video. The footage released by the police also shows a suspect wearing a red hooded sweatshirt pointing a handgun at the store clerk. During this time, a second person can be seen kicking open a door leading behind the counter. Both these along with a third are then seen rushing to a back room of the store and putting items into a backpack before fleeing the store.

Shubman Gill Equals Babar Azam’s World Record

New Delhi: In a spiraling conflict over judicial appointments, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju today objected strongly to the Supreme Court making public the government’s objections to candidates recommended for judges.

Last week, the Supreme Court collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, published on the Supreme Court website the government’s objections to the elevation of three candidates for judge and its own counter.

Rahul Gandhi on ‘Pappu’ tag

“Putting out secret and sensitive reports of RAW or IB in public domain is a matter of grave concern, to which I will react at an appropriate time. Today is not the appropriate time,” the Law Minister told reporters.

“If the concerned officer who is working for the nation in disguise or secret mode in a very secretive location, he will think twice if tomorrow his report is put out in the public domain, and it will have implications. That is why I will not make any comment,” Mr Rijiju said.

US ready to assist Pakistan address its electricity woes

Continuing his blazing hot form, Shubman Gill brought up his 4th ODI century, in the 3rd match of the series against New Zealand on Tuesday. Having scored 208 and 40-not out in the first two matches of the series, Gill is already the top-scoring batter in the 3-match assignment by a distance. As Gill touched the 112-run mark in the match at Indore, he matched Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s record of scoring the ‘most number of runs in a 3-match ODI series’.

Until being equalled by the young India opener, Babar had solely held the record of scoring the most number of runs (360) in a 3-match ODI series. Gill needed 113 runs to surpass the Pakistan stalwart’s record but he was dismissed for 112.

Thousands of crores of rupees have been pumped in by the BJP and the RSS systematically to distort my image but the truth always comes out, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said Tuesday on him being derisively referred to as ‘Pappu’ on social media.

The Congress will teach the BJP that truth works in this country and not money, power and arrogance, Gandhi said as his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ continues in its final leg. “Thousands of crores have been spent to distort my image. This was done systematically by the BJP and its leaders. Thousands of crores can’t hide the truth and you have witnessed it. The truth always comes out,” the 52-year-old said when asked if the Congress was spending crores of rupees to counter his ‘Pappu’ image. He alleged the RSS and the BJP leaders think that anything can be achieved with money and power.

The US is ready to assist Pakistan in resolving its electricity woes, a top official in the Biden administration has said, hours after the South Asian country faced a nationwide power breakdown due to a “frequency variation” in the national grid.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the system of frequency of the national grid went down at 7:34 am local time on Monday, resulting in the breakdown on Monday, leaving millions of people without electricity, the second such outage in nearly four months.

“Of course, (we) have seen what has transpired in Pakistan. Our thoughts are with all those who’ve been affected by the outages. The US, of course, as you mentioned, has assisted our Pakistani partners across any number of challenges,” State Department Spokesperson Ned Price told reporters at his daily news conference on Monday.

“We’re prepared to do so in this case, if there is something that we’re able to provide. But I’m not aware of any particular request yet,” he said. Pakistan is grappling with one of the country’s worst economic crises in recent years amid dwindling foreign exchange reserves.

VHP withdraws protest against Pathaan

The Gujarat unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday withdrew its protest against Shah Rukh Khanstarrer “Pathaan”, a day before its release, expressing satisfaction over the removal of “objectionable” contents from the film.

There was no official confirmation of the death count, but San Mateo County Sheriff tweeted that it was dealing with an incident. “Suspect is in custody. There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time,” the sheriff’s office tweeted

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has revised the “obscene song” and “lewd words” in the film and hence the right-wing groups will no longer protest against its release, the Gujarat VHP’s secretary Ashok Raval said in a statement.

Centre Blocks Tweets Sharing BBC Documentary Critical Of PM Modi: Sources

Gujarat riots and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, people with direct knowledge of the matter have said.

Many tweets and YouTube videos of the documentary titled “India: The Modi Question” no longer appear on the microblogging and video-sharing websites.

The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry told the two social media giants to block the first episode of the documentary by BBC, people familiar with the matter said, a day after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak distanced himself from the documentary series, saying he “doesn’t agree with the characterisation” of his Indian counterpart in the UK’s parliament by Pakistan-origin MP Imran Hussain.

A group of 302 former judges, exbureaucrats and veterans on Saturday slammed a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “motivated charge sheet against our leader, a fellow Indian and a patriot” and a reflection of its “dyed-in-the-wool negativity and unrelenting prejudice”. nThey claimed it is the archetype of past British imperialism in India setting itself up as both judge and jury to resurrect Hindu-Muslim tensions that were overwhelmingly the creation of the British Raj policy of divide and rule. The two-part BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question” claims it investigated certain aspects relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots when Modi was the chief minister of the state.

Big challenge in

Renshaw

Sydney, Jan 25 (IANS) Australian batter Matt Renshaw has picked ace India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as the key Indian bowler and the toughest to face in the upcoming four-Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting from February 9 in Nagpur.

With Australia’s batting line-up packed with left-handers like David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and Alex Carey apart from Renshaw himself, Ashwin will be crucial for India as he became the first bowler to take 200 wickets against left-hand batters in 2021.

“Ashwin is difficult to face. He is a smart bowler with a lot of variations and he uses them very well, but you do get used to him once you’ve faced him for a while,” Renshaw was quoted as saying by AAP.

He added that the Australian batters will have to be wary of the delivery which doesn’t spin from Ashwin and can trap the batters lbw.

“I think the big challenge from Ashwin and any off-spinner in spinning conditions to a left-hander is the lbw threat.

As Rohit pulled to deep square leg off Blair Tickner to get to his 30th ODI century and second against New Zealand, the broadcasters flashed the statistic that it was the Indian skipper’s first ton since January 19, 2020. While the statistic was correct, Rohit felt in the post-match press conference that it did not convey the correct picture, pointing out he hardly played any ODIs during that period due to various reasons.

“I have played only 12 ODIs in three years. Three years sounds (like) a lot, but in that three years, I have played only 12 or 13 (17) ODIs if am not wrong. I know it was shown on the broadcast, sometimes we need to show the right things also.”

“Last entire year we didn’t play ODI cricket, we were focussing on T20 cricket a lot. Kabhi kabhi thoda woh hum ko dhyan chahiye, broadcaster ko bhi sahi cheez dikhana chahiye (We should pay attention to such things, the broadcaster, too, needs to check these things),” he said.

“And in the last year, we have just played T20 cricket. In T20 cricket at the moment, other than Suryakumar Yadav anyone else is batting better; he has hit two (T20I) centuries, and I don’t think anyone else has scored a century. In Test cricket, I have played just two matches against Sri Lanka. Otherwise, I was injured in between. Please check all that and after that, you can ask me (about my form),” he added.

Rohit was also full of praise for his opening partner Shubman Gill, who was the leading run-getter in the series and slammed his third ODI ton in the last four innings, taking home the Player of the Series award. At Indore, Gill slammed 112 off 78 balls, hitting 13 fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 143.59 and shared an opening partnership of 212 with Rohit.

“Honestly, with the way he (Shubman) was batting in and before this series, I don’t think much needs to be told. He understands his game really well, if you see he paces his innings very well, you have to go big and deep into the game.

Siraj crowned world No. 1 bowler in ODIs

Melbourne: (IANS) Aryna Sabalenka soared into the first Australian Open semifinal of her career with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Croatian Donna Vekic in the quarterfinal here on Wednesday.

Sabalenka, who had never gone beyond the fourth round of the Grand Slam before this year, is yet to drop a set in Melbourne as she extended her unbeaten run to nine matches to start the season. She flipped the script of her career head-to-head against Vekic with the 1 hour, 49-minute victory, beating the Croatian for just the second time in seven career meetings.

Bopanna

India pacer Mohammed Siraj on Wednesday became number one bowler in the ICC rankings for ODI bowlers, a testament to his rapid rise in international cricket.

Siraj went past New Zealand’s Trent Boult and Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood to become the top-ranked ODI bowler for the very first time. Not only has Siraj’s form over the last 12 months been imperious, but his effort in the ODI series at home earlier this month against Sri Lanka and New Zealand has shown just how much the right-armer has improved in recent times. India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey challenged Siraj to work on certain aspects of his game last year and the extra training the energetic quick has put in has paid off.

Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza advanced to the Australian Open mixed doubles semi-finals without having to move a muscle as they got a walkover from Jelena Ostapenko and David Vega Hernandez here on Tuesday.

The Indian team has not yet dropped a set in the mixed team competition. They will take on third seeds Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski in the last-four stage.

They are the only Indians left in the fray at the Australian Open.

For Sania this will be her last grand slam appearance and she will naturally want to go out on a high.

Bopanna and his partner Mathew Ebden, seeded 10th, had made a first-round exit from the men’s doubles event.

Sania and her Kazkah partner Anna Danilina also lost in the women’s doubles second round.

Ramkumar Ramanathan and his Mexican partner Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela, and the pair of Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni had also made first-round exits. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and N Sriram Balaji had reached the second round before bowing out.

Do you like chocolate? Silly question, right, so how about: Why do you like chocolate? Is it the sweet taste? The burst of joy you get from the first bite alone? Or is it perhaps the way it slowly melts on your tongue, how it dissolves and deliciously coats the inside of your mouth before you swallow it all down and reach for the next piece?

As you might be able to tell, I identify as a chocoholic. For me, chocolate is one of humanity’s best inventions for all three of the above reasons. But scientists from the University of Leeds, UK, have focused on the latter for a study published this month in the journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.

Lead researcher Siavash Soltanahmadi from the university’s School of Food Science and Nutrition and his team determined that it’s the mouth-feel of chocolate that triggers our delight. Their research results say: It’s all about lubrication.

That melty, chocolatey deliciousness that fills your entire mouth when you’re enjoying a treat arises from the way the chocolate is lubricated from the way certain ingredients mix with our saliva.

And the most relevant ingredient for that is fat. Not exactly surprising, but still a little disheartening for the health-conscious among us. There is good news though: Soltanahmadi and his fellow researchers claim they have found a way to make chocolate healthier without changing its characteristic gooey goodness. Spoiler alert: It’s all about the location of the fat inside the chocolate.

CHOCOLATE can still be delicious with less fat: Study

described as an artificial tongue.

“It’s a machine that holds a tongue-like surface,” Soltanahmadi said. “We collected data from real human tongues and analyzed them to have an idea of the texture of our tongue. Then we came up with an average, put that into a model and 3D-printed some molds.”

That’s how the researchers ended up with models that look and act “like [a] tongue,” Soltanahmadi said.

The scientists rubbed dark chocolate on the artificial tongue, then rubbed the tongue against another surface doubling as a palate to analyze what would happen with the chocolate and how the components would dissolve. Human nature too fickle for chocolate testing But why not simply use human testers? I would have happily flown to the UK to volunteer as a chocolate taster for this experiment, and I imagine it wouldn’t have been too difficult to find a few others willing to eat chocolate in the name of science.

“One of our aims with this was actually to reduce the number of human panelists [or testers] needed, and the reason for that lies in the nature of humans,” Soltanahmadi explained. “Me and you, we can try the same chocolate and we’d describe it in different ways. We’re trying to reduce that and create more lab-based measurements.”

In short, humans aren’t suitable to produce reliable, comparable data when it comes to testing the mouth feel of chocolate. There goes my dream job.

Less fat, same melty mouth feel…

I walk 30 minutes daily, but I have a very sedentary job Studies show that even if you exercise 30 minutes a day, seven days a week, sitting for eight hours at your desk will undo all that hard work. So try getting up every half an hour and taking a few steps or jogging in place. That will prevent your metabolism from slowing down and undoing all your hard work.

I sleep 6-7 hours a night. Is that enough? Can I make up for the lack of sleep by napping?

Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Less than that does not give your brain and body time to recuperate. Also, it may increase craving for junk food. A short nap of 30 minutes may help. More than that will make you feel groggy. You cannot make up for lost sleep with naps.

I need to lose weight fast. Is it better to do cardio workouts or weight lifting?

Fatty

cocoa

butter makes for good mouth feel But first, let’s take a step back. Chocolate is made up of several components. There are the solid solids, if you will (sugarand cocoa particles), and a solid that turns liquid: Cocoa butter, the aforementioned fat. Cocoa butter is solid at low temperatures, but once it enters our mouth and hits our tongue, it turns into an oily liquid.

All disappointment aside, test runs with the artificial tongue showed that the level of lubrication that makes for chocolate’s pleasant mouth feel can be achieved with a fat content lower than that of most current chocolates.

“We’re not aiming for zero-calorie chocolate,” Soltanahmadi said. “I’m not sure that’s achievable. But we aimed to reduce the cocoa butter, the fatty part. Because in our observation we saw that rather than the amount of the fat, the location

Cardio workouts burn more calories in the same amount of time as weight lifting, especially if you combine it with some high-intensity intervals (increasing the speed of your training with short periods of lower intensity or rest in between). Weights, either free weights or with machines, use fewer calories than cardio, but the effects are more long-lasting. They speed up your metabolism all day.

I was told that people live longer in villages and are less likely to get cancer. Is this true?

This is true and has a lot to do with air pollution. Our cities are highly polluted. Autopsies done on city dwellers show lung lymph nodes clogged with black pollutants. This reduces the function of the immunity-producing cells and macrophages. As a result, not only are respiratory infections (which may even be fatal) more frequent, but the likelihood of cancer is also greater. Regular steam inhalations can help to clear out the lungs, remove pollutants from the trachea and thereby reduce the incidence of respiratory infections. It may make sense to take steam inhalations once or twice a day.
