‘Hotel Rwanda’ Hero Paul Rusesabagina Arrives In US: White House

Pentagon deals playing cards to help Ukraine

The Pentagon has issued similar decks in the past to help forces familiarise themselves with elements of warfare over a hard-fought game of spades, hearts or poker

US President Joe Biden had earlier welcomed Paul Rusesabagina’s release.

Washington: Outspoken Rwandan government critic Paul Rusesabagina, whose efforts to save people during the 1994 genocide inspired the Hollywood film “Hotel Rwanda,” has arrived in the United States after being freed from prison, the White House said Wednesday.

“I’m pleased to welcome Paul Rusesabagina back to the United States. We’re glad to have him back on US soil & reunited with his family & friends who’ve long waited for this day to come,” US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan tweeted. Rusesabagina was released on March 25 after more than 900 days behind bars, after the Kigali government commuted his 25-year sentence on terrorism charges.

US may prevent Pakistan’s threshold alliance with China

Islamabad: (IANS) One of the biggest opponents of China may be the biggest wall between a full-fledged Pakistan-China alliance, says a report by the Washington-based US Institute of Peace (USIP).

The report titled, “The Future of the China-Pakistan Military Relationship”, digs into the current status of relationship between Pakistan and China, terming it at a “threshold alliance”, arguing that Washington may prevent Pakistan from extending its bilateral cooperation and relationship with Beijing, being one of the biggest opponent.

US-Israeli tensions out in open

With billions of dollars in weapons, the West has sought to give Ukraine the upper hand in its war with Russia. But the dizzying array of arms headed to the battlefield could make it hard for troops to tell friends from foes.

So the US army has come up with a new training tool seemingly designed for the conflict: a set of playing cards with pictures of 52 different Natomade tanks, armoured personnel carriers, trucks, artillery pieces and

other weapons systems, plus two jokers. The idea, said Major Andrew Harshbarger, a spokesman for the army’s Training and Doctrine Command, is to enable soldiers to quickly “identify enemy equipment and distinguish the equipment from friendly forces.”

The Pentagon has issued similar decks in the past to help forces familiarise themselves with elements of warfare over a hard-fought game of spades, hearts or poker. Each card has a picture of a weapons system, along with its name, the country where it is manufactured, its export destinations and its main armament.

Disney’s Florida surprise: an end run around DeSantis

in February giving Governor Ron DeSantis effective control over a board that oversees municipal services and development in a special district that encompasses Walt Disney World resort. But before the takeover by DeSantis’s appointees, Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) pushed through changes to the special tax district agreement that limit the board’s action for decades, according to the Orlando Sentinel, which quoted lawyers for the board who spoke at a meeting on Wednesday.

Netanyahu says Israel is ‘a sovereign country’ that would make its own decisions

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel responded defiantly on Wednesday to sharp criticism from President Biden over his government’s contentious judicial overhaul plan, declaring that Israel was “a sovereign country” that would make its own decisions.

As weeks of quiet diplomatic pressure burst into a rare open dispute between the allies, Netanyahu’s opponents in Israel accused him of endangering the longstanding and critical relationship with the US that could harm the country’s ability to face daunting security challenges, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

US, Japan reach deal on vital minerals for EV batteries

A Florida board created to oversee Walt Disney World’s special taxation district is considering legal action after saying its power over the entertainment company’s resort has been eviscerated, a spokesperson for the district confirmed on Wednesday.

Florida lawmakers passed a bill

“It completely circumvents the authority of this board to govern,” board member Brian Aungst Jr. was quoted as saying. A spokesperson for the board said the supervisors characterized the prior board’s actions as an “eleventh hour” act that effectively ties their hands and limits their ability to do their jobs. Disney said its action was proper.

Japan and the United States have reached an agreement on trade in critical minerals for electric vehicle batteries, part of an effort to diversify supply chains and reduce reliance on China for strategically important resources. The deal struck Tuesday is expected to help electric vehicles using metals processed in Japan qualify for tax incentives under President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. “This announcement is proof of President Biden’s commitment to building resilient and secure supply chains,” US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said.

“I’m Devastated When I See...”: US Engineer Who Invented Mobile Phone

HiIndia Newsdesk

Del Mar, US: The problem with mobile phones is that people look at them too much. At least, that’s according to the man who invented them 50 years ago.

Martin Cooper, an American engineer dubbed the “Father of the cell phone,” says the neat little device we all have in our pockets has almost boundless potential and could one day even help conquer disease.

But right now, we can be a little obsessed.

“I am devastated when I see somebody crossing the street and looking at their cell phone. They are out of their minds,” the 94-year-old told AFP from his office in Del Mar, California.

“But after a few people get run over by cars, they’ll figure it out,” he joked.

Cooper wears an Apple Watch and uses a topend iPhone, flicking intuitively between his email, photos, YouTube and the controls for his hearing aid.

He gets his hands on the latest model every time

it is updated, and gives it a thorough road test. But, he confesses, with several million apps available, it can all feel a bit much.

“I will never, ever understand how to use the cell phone the way my grandchildren and great grandchildren do,” he says.

As for the problem of people gawping at their phones too much -- even as they cross the road -- he’s not worried. New technology often throws up challenges. “When television first came out, people were just hypnotized.

“But we somehow... managed to understand that there is a quality associated with looking at a television.” Right now, we’re at the mindless staring phase with our phones, he says, but that won’t last.

“Each generation is going to be smarter... They will learn how to use the cell phone more effectively.

“Humans sooner or later figure it out.”

‘Putin may attend nuclear power plant inauguration in Turkey’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin may travel to Turkey on April 27 to attend the inauguration ceremony of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant.

Erdogan told news channel ATV-A Haber in an interview that Putin may either travel to Mersin in person or attend the ceremony via teleconference, Xinhua news agency reported. The project, located in the southeastern Turkish province of Mersin, is Turkey’s first nuclear plant. It is expected to produce 35 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually and will meet about 10 per cent of domestic electricity needs.

Kyiv: 4,300 Ukraine children deported

Ankara, March 30 (IANS) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin may travel to Turkey on April 27 to attend the inauguration ceremony of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant.

Russian tank attack stopped

It is the world’s first nuclear power plant project implemented through a build-own-operate model. Under a contract, Russia’s Rosatom firm has agreed to provide the power plant’s design, construction, maintenance, operation and decommissioning.

Sri Lanka to reduce fuel prices as economic conditions improve

More than 4,300 Ukrainian children, many of them orphaned, have been forcibly deported to Russia or Russian-occupied Ukraine, a top Ukrainian official said on Tuesday, adding to reports that have prompted an arrest warrant for President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. Since Moscow’s invasion in February 2022, the Russian authorities have announced with fanfare the transfer of thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia to be adopted and become citizens, The New York Times reported in October. On state-run TV, officials offer teddy bears to new arrivals, who are portrayed as abandoned children being rescued from war.

Levi’s faces backlash over AI models

A Russian tank formation created for the Ukraine war has suffered heavy losses owing to a lack of discipline and low morale, with one regiment losing a “large proportion of its tanks”, according to British intelligence. The 10th tank regiment is part of the 3rd army corps, the first major new Russian formation formed to support the invasion.

In recent weeks, Moscow has switched its focus to Avdiivka in the Donetsk region, hoping to encircle the Ukrainian troops defending it after having so far failed to capture nearby Bakhmut. However, its 10th tank regiment has lost significant numbers of tanks in the city while making only marginal gains.Russia is believed to have lost at least 1,900 tanks since Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in February last year, according to western analysts.

Colombo: (IANS) Sri Lanka’s Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said on Wednesday that fuel prices will be reduced in the country from Friday midnight.

The price of 92 Octane petrol will be reduced by 60 LKR ($0.18) to 340 LKR per liter, and that of 95 Octane petrol will fall by 135 LKR to 375 LKR per liter, reports Xinhua news agency.

The price of diesel will be reduced by 80 LKR to 325 LKR per liter and that of super diesel will be reduced by 4 LKR to 465 LKR.

Meanwhile, the price of kerosine will be reduced by 10 LKR to 295 LKR.

Wijesekera said last week that the Sri Lankan government would reduce fuel prices as a result of falling international oil prices and the crisis-ridden country now having the ability to get competitive prices from suppliers due to the International Monetary Fund loan approval.

The Minister also said the Sri Lankan rupee is appreciating against the US dollar.

According to Wijesekera, President Ranil Wickremesinghe had advised him to reduce fuel prices following the IMF bailout package and the stabilization of the economy.

Levi’s provoked a backlash after unveiling AI models it claimed would help boost diversity and sustainability. The fashion brand said it was partnering with Lalaland, a digital studio that uses artificial intelligence to create realistic computer-generated images of various body types wearing its clothing, including its famous denim jeans. Visitors to the company’s website could only see clothing on a single model at the moment, the company said, but AI would offer them the chance to see the clothes of models who most resemble them.

India registers 3,016 fresh Covid-19 cases, highest in six months

India saw a single-day rise of 3,016 fresh coronavirus cases, the highest in nearly six months, while the active cases increased to 13,509, according to the Union health ministry data updated on Thursday. A total of 3,375 cases were recorded on October 2 last year.

The country’s Covid-19 death toll has increased to 5,30,862 with 14 latest fatalities -- three reported by Maharashtra, two from Delhi and one reported by Himachal Pradesh in a span of 24 hours and eight reconciled by Kerala as per PTI.

According to the ministry data updated at 8 am, the daily positivity

was recorded at 2.73 per cent, while the weekly positivity was pegged at 1.71 per cent. The infection tally stands at 4.47 crore (4,47,12,692). The active cases now comprise 0.03 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.78 per cent,

according to the health ministry website. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,68,321, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent. The ministry, citing the rising counts, has asked Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu to monitor new and emerging clusters of Covid-19 cases and take pre-emptive action in any areas of concern to control the spread of infection.

Indian Teen Tanvi Marupally Missing Since January Found

Ajay Banga, the US pick to head the World Bank, appears almost certain to become the anti-poverty lender’s next president after nominations closed Wednesday with no country publicly proposing an alternative candidate. The former Mastercard Inc. chief executive was tapped by President Joe Biden last month after current president David Malpass announced plans to step down almost a year early. Mr Malpass, nominated by former President Donald Trump in 2019, won the top spot unopposed. The institution’s top job has always gone to a US candidate. While no countries besides the US have announced candidates, World Bank rules allow member nations to make nominations during the window that closed on Wednesday afternoon without making them public.

US Court’s Ruling On H-1B Visa To Benefit Thousands Of Indian Techies

Washington: In a big relief for foreign workers in the US tech sector, a judge has ruled that spouses of H-1B visa holders can work in the United States. In the process, US District Judge Tanya Chutkan dismissed a lawsuit filed by Save Jobs USA which had approached the court to dismiss the Obama-era regulation that gave employment authorization cards to spouses of certain categories of H-1B visa holders. Tech companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft had opposed the lawsuit. The US has so far issued nearly 1,00,000 work authorisations to spouses of H-1B workers, a significantly large number of whom are Indians. In her order, Judge Chutkan said the primary contention of Save Jobs USA is that Congress has never granted the Department of Homeland Security authority to allow foreign nationals, like H-4 visa-holders, to work during their stay in the United States.

In good news coming from Tampa, Florida, Tanvi Marupally, an Indian teen who was missing from her Arkansas home has been found safe. and Exploited Children. Officials with the Tampa Police Department said that the agency received a tip from the Conway Police Department. After receiving the tip, officers in Tampa headed to the John F. Germany library where they found Marupally. According to official reports Tanvi was found healthy and uninjured.

Tanvi is not a Runaway Child – Community member tells Hi India

Ever since Arkansas teenager Tanvi Marupally went missing there were stories doing the rounds about how Tanvi had run away earlier too. Community member and family friend Jenny Wallace who was leading a campaign to find Tanvi cleared the air while talking to Hi India last week. She said about Tanvi’s disappearance when she was 11-years-old, “There is a lot of misinformation going around. It is frustrating because she is definitely not some bad child who constantly runs away. She was in a field across from their house three years ago because she was upset she might have to move to India. She was gone for only 12 hours or so.”

Louisiana Man Receives 100-Year Sentence For Causing Death Of Indian Origin Girl

Indian sentenced in US for distribution of child sexual abuse material

SHREVEPORT, LA- Joseph Lee

Smith of Shreveport, Louisiana being sentenced to 100 years of hard labor for the murder of 5-year-old Mya Snehal Patel is deeply saddening. The loss of a young life is always tragic, and it is even more so when it is due to a senseless act of violence. The fact that the incident occurred as a result of an altercation in a hotel parking lot only adds to the

tragedy. Mya Patel was playing in a hotel room on Monkhouse Drive when a bullet entered her room and hit her in the head. Patel was rushed to a nearby hospital where she fought for three days and was pronounced dead on March 23, 2021.

The sentence handed down by District Judge John D. Mosely is a clear reflection of the severity of Smith’s crime, and it sends a message that the justice system takes such incidents very seriously.

The requirement for Smith to serve the sentences without the possibility of parole, probation, or reduced sentences is also a just outcome, given that he is a repeat offender. Mya Patel’s death is a devastating loss for her family and friends, and they will likely carry the pain of her passing with them for the rest of their lives. I hope that the knowledge that justice has been served in her case brings them some comfort during this difficult time.

The explosion has shaken the tight-knit community, and the loss of life and destruction of the historic factory has left many residents in shock.

The R. M. Palmer Co. is a family-owned business that has been in operation for more than 100 years. The company is well known for its chocolate and candy products, which are sold nationwide. The factory was a staple in the community, and its loss has been felt by many.

The rescue and recovery effort continues as authorities search for the six missing people. The community has come together to support the families of those affected by the tragedy, and local

businesses have opened their doors to provide food and shelter to those in need. The explosion at the R. M. Palmer Co. chocolate factory is a tragedy that

has touched the lives of many. Our thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives, and we hope for the safe recovery of the missing.

Ro Khanna Will Not Be Running For Senate

It was widely believed that Indian American House of Representative member Ro Khanna would be running for US Senate next year. However, the congressman who represents Silicon Valley announced that he will not be running for the Senate. Instead, Khanna will be endorsing Democratic Rep Barbara Lee and will co-chair her campaign.

In an interview to CNN, Khanna said, “I have concluded that despite a lot of enthusiasm from Bernie [Sanders] folks, the best place, the most exciting place, action place, fit place for me to serve as a progressive is in the House of Representatives, and I’m honored to be co-chairing Barbara Lee’s campaign for the Senate and endorsing her today.” Khanna also said that there are currently no African American women in the Senate, and Lee would fill that void.

Fernandes also communicated with Crow about arranging for the latter to travel to engage in sexual activity with minor children.

During a separate communication with an unidentified person, Fernandes talked about sexual abuse of minor children and his ability to obtain children for sex.

Crow pled guilty to one count of enticement of a minor and one count of production of child pornography in case number 22-cr-14035.

He was sentenced on December 12, 2022, to 30 years in prison.

New Student Loan Initiative Offers Financial Relief Through Volunteer Service

CONNECTICUT- This is a great initiative aimed at providing relief to teachers, nurses, and other professionals in Connecticut who are struggling with student loan debt. By offering monetary relief in exchange for volunteer work, the state can help these individuals reduce their debt and contribute to their communities at the same time. It’s important to note that there are some eligibility requirements for the program, such as having lived in Connecticut for five years, making less than $100,000 or $125,000 for single and married applicants respectively, and having attended a public college or university in Connecticut. The program is expected to cost around $10 million, and the state’s appropriations committee will be holding a public hearing to get feedback from the community. This will give individuals the opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposed program and provide input on how it can be improved. Overall, this proposed pilot program has the potential to make a positive impact on the lives of many individuals in Connecticut.

The Board of Police Commissioners in New Haven unanimously approved the appointment of Colon, 37, who was previously a lieutenant in the internal affairs office, The New Haven Independent reported. Mumbai-born Colon moved with her family to Queens when she was 11, and studied criminal justice at the University of New Haven.

“I come from a Sikh family. I speak Punjabi. I’m very proud of my heritage,” Colon was quoted as saying in The New Haven Independent. “More important is the mission and the values of the department. To me, it’s all about being fair and impartial. My background, my morals, my family values and traditions a I feel like I bring a lot to the table. The state Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) is implementing legislation signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy in 2021, which allows for electronic proof of vehicle registration. As of Friday, the MVC started providing PDF files with proof of registration that can be printed out or displayed as an electronic image on a phone, computer or tablet. While the MVC will still mail a paper copy of the vehicle registration card, it’s no longer the only option for drivers to provide proof of registration. The electronic document is a valid registration by law and can be displayed or given to law enforcement, courts or any other entity that requires a New Jersey vehicle registration. The new law also enables lessees of vehicles to directly renew their registrations in New Jersey. The MVC will begin sending registration renewal applications directly to lessees, rather than to the lessor or owner, which will greatly assist more than 820,000 drivers of leased vehicles in New Jersey. This change will make the renewal of registrations much smoother and more timely for drivers.

New Delhi,: (IANS) As an Indian growing up in America, Darshana Patel who recently announced her bid to run for the California State Assembly District 76, was called a “pagan, greasy Indian”, and was asked to “go back home”.

The 48-year-old research scientist, who is the board president of California’s Poway Unified School District, said that microaggressions were common, and the term ABCD -- American-Born Confused Desi -haunted her as a child.

“The term ABCD haunted me as a child... As a young girl in second grade, I was called a pagan, greasy Indian (because my mother put oil in my hair), asked what tribe I was from, and often teased when I wore more traditional attire to school,” Patel, who hails from Vadodara, said in an interview to IANS.

In an America, where one in five incidents involve language scapegoating of Asians, according to a recent AAPI study, Patel said post 9/11, a group of men in a pick up truck followed her, shouting “go back home and n-word” and “you are not

California state Assembly candidate Darshana Patel

As an Indian growing up in America, Darshana Patel who recently announced her bid to run for the California State Assembly District 76, was called a “pagan, greasy Indian”, and was asked to “go back home”.

With fellow Indian-Americans Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramakrishnan throwing their hats in the ring for the 2024 presidential elections, Patel told IANS that she feels proud that they are taking the risk to represent the diverse Indian-American community via the primary electoral process.

The term ABCD haunted me as a child... As a young girl in second grade, I was called a pagan, greasy Indian (because my mother put oil in my hair), asked what tribe I was from, and often teased when I wore more traditional attire to school,” Patel

welcome here”.

“While conditions have improved in some ways for Indian immigrants (there are grocery stores, temples, and community organisations now), they have got worse in other ways as Indian-American are integrating more into the American fabric,” Patel, who is part of the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs, said.

Running for the state Assembly in 2024, Patel told IANS that she wants to dispel ignorant and harmful stereotypes of Indian-Americans, and promote more cross-cultural and inter-sectional experiences and education, like ethnic studies in public schools.

California’s Assembly District 76, which includes the cities of Escondido and San Marcos, portions of San Diego, and numerous unincorporated communities in San Diego County, has an active and diverse Indian community that makes up about two per cent of the voters and many more green card and visa holders.

“As the daughter of Indian immigrants who struggled to realise the American Dream, I understand that representation matters... Our main challenge is using our collective voice to affect policy that will help our community tackle pressing issues such as affordability, education and youth mental health, immigration reform, public safety, and high-quality comprehensive healthcare,” she said. The San Diego resident’s campaign has earned early endorsements from Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna.

The election will be an open-seat contest, as incumbent Assembly member Brian Maienschein will be terming out.

Along with Patel, lawyer Joseph Rocha, also a Democrat, has announced his candidacy for the same seat.

“Their candidacy will bring a wealth of diverse opinions to the political arena and challenge stereotypes. I feel proud that Indian-Amerians are stepping up to all levels of public office and further inspiring political engagement and civic responsibility.”

Indian-Americans account for over one per cent of the country’s population and have one of the highest per capita incomes among ethnic groups.

While the community is concentrated in major areas like New York, New Jersey, California, and Texas, their votes might turn out to be decisive in case of close races in the states of Florida, Atlanta, and Pennsylvania. So, is the US ready for an IndianAmerican as its next president?

“I wish I could answer Yes with lots of confidence since we have successfully elected Indian-American local officials, judges, Governors, and several Indian-American Congressional representatives, and our current Vice President Kamala Harris is an Indian-American,” Patel said, adding that the US is yet to elect a female President.

“Though, and I think that there are persisting, misguided fears of divided loyalty from Indian and even all Asian Americans, perhaps this election cycle will break these barriers,” she said.
